Giraffe’s baby bump boosts tiny zoo’s upkeep

The Associated Press April the giraffe has brought a bundle to a tiny zoo in rural upstate New York, thanks to a YouTube video livestream of her pregnancy and birth of a calf that has riveted viewers around the world.

Owners of the for-profit Animal Adventure Park won’t say exactly how much they’ve pulled in from all April-related ventures, but internet marketing experts conservatively estimate the haul in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The money will be used for zoo upkeep, wildlife conservation in Africa and a favorite cause of the zoo’s founders – local children with unexpected medical expenses, the park owners said.

“The monies are going to allow the park to continue to grow and improve,” said Jordan Patch, who started the 20-acre zoo with his wife four years ago in Harpursville, about 130 miles northwest of New York City. “But also the money will help support our conservation efforts in Africa, so we’re actually providing tangible results for wild giraffes.”

The ventures include the Toys R Us-sponsored YouTube stream, monetized text messages, a clothing line and the sale of T-shirts, caps and fuzzy toys.

All Patch would say for sure, moneywise, is that a GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $150,000 for the care of April; her mate, Oliver, and their male calf, as well as upgrades to their exhibit space. And Patch expects 150,000 park visitors – twice as many as last year – to pay $11 to $13 to see the giraffe family along with the park’s 200 other animals, including alligators, monkeys and zebras.

Neither Patch nor Toys R Us, which features a giraffe as its corporate mascot, would talk about how many dollars were attached to April’s video stream. After coming online Feb. 23, it has become the second most-watched livestream in YouTube history with more than 232 million views and 7.6 billion minutes of live watch time.

Digital media analysts said the money alone might be beside the point.

“Every marketer dreams of getting something that will go viral,” said Allen Adamson of Brand Simple Consulting, which helps companies define and market their brand.

DeKALB – Police are seeking information about a motor vehicle theft in DeKalb.

On April 14, the DeKalb Police Department investigated the theft in the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive and currently are looking into a suspect.

Slow Smoke BBQ restaurant in Sycamore sees positive signs with opening

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – After years of selling its signature smoked brisket, pork and turkey out of a food trailer, Slow Smoke BBQ opened a restaurant Wednesday, to the delight of returning customers.

To mark the occasion, the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony that many local business owners attended.

Slow Smoke owner Dan Dietz said the whole process was humbling.

“A lot of customers from last year that were coming to our food trailer were really excited coming through the door,” Dietz said. “It’s been really, really positive, and I feel very blessed to be here.”

By the end of the first day, Dietz said he had sold nearly all of his inventory.

“I think our planning was really good based on our experience from last year being in the trailer,” Dietz said. “Things have gone excellent so far.”

The restaurant is the remodeled home of a former Subway at 265 W. Peace Road.

Dietz said it was rewarding to serve all of the contractors, electricians and plumbers responsible for remodeling the space.

“When they were here, the front dining room hadn’t been done, and it hadn’t been painted,” he said. “But I was awful glad to see them, because they worked really hard.”

Keeping things local is important for Slow Smoke, which buys its meats through Inboden’s Meats in DeKalb and its buns from the bakery at the local HyVee. Rose Treml, executive director of the chamber, called the restaurant’s arrival exciting.

“When you have a business that has been doing so well as a food truck that they feel they want to take the next step and open a storefront, it is obviously really good for the community,” Treml said. “We hope they can maintain the food truck and continue to participate in the same community events they did last year.”

Slow Smoke’s food trailer has been involved with Cruise Night and Ribfest, among other events. Dietz said the trailer already is scheduled for weddings, graduation parties, reunions and some public events.

“When we can get unique dining options for people in Sycamore, it just brings more people to the area,” Treml said. “Slow Smoke has been a member

of the chamber, and whenever we hear about something like this, we try to reach out to the business owner to see if there’s anything we can do to help.”

Polka Dot Bakery, which operates in the same building, showed its support with a complimentary batch of custom cookies for the first 50 customers through Slow Smoke’s doors.

Some of the cookies read “Slow Smoke BBQ” and “Thank You,” while others featured the silhouette of a pig.

“We wanted to make the cookies extra special for them,” owner Paige Halstead said. “We just figured with our new neighbors being here, we wanted to be friendly and maybe open up the opportunity to do things together in the future.”

Halstead also said that in the first three days Slow Smoke has been open, she already has ordered food three times.

“They have great food, and we’re super excited to have them here,” she said.

Slow Smoke BBQ is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, or whenever it sells out.

DeKALB – One of the things Christian Lash enjoys most about working with Transitions, a social group for transgender, gender-nonconforming and gender-questioning students at Northern Illinois University, is that they “get to see people as they are.”

“There are some people in that group who, for various reasons, are not out in their daily lives,” Lash said.

“This group gives them a chance to have a space where they can be themselves, and that’s really cool to see.”

Lash, a library specialist at NIU’s Founders Memorial Library, has been a co-coordinator of Transitions for three semesters. Lash said members of the group are able to hang out, play games and have fun in a welcoming environment.

Lash’s leadership in Transitions was only one of the reasons they were chosen to receive the Eychaner Award during the 23rd annual Pride Awards dinner Friday. Each year, the ceremony honors students, faculty, staff and partners who have contributed to an atmosphere of inclusiveness for the LGBTQ community at NIU. Originally from Jacksonville, Lash moved to DeKalb in 2004 to earn an undergraduate degree in childhood development from NIU. Lash began working at the library in 2012 and is completing an online program through the University of Illinois to attain a master’s degree in library and information science.

Lash also represented the 3rd Ward on the DeKalb City Council from 2011 to 2015.

The namesakes for the Eychaner Award are Howard and Milly Eychaner, who founded the DeKalb chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) and were known to hand out business cards that read, “Howard and Millie Eychaner: Proud of our gay and non-gay children.”

Since the inaugural award in 1995, the Eychaner Award has been given in two categories each year, with one going to a student and the other going to a faculty or staff member or alumni.

Molly Holmes, director of NIU’s Gender and Sexuality Resource Center, said Lash was nominated for the award because of their various commitment to educating people about and advocating for the LGBTQ community.

This includes developing a class called “Just as I am: the Church and LGBTQ+ Integration” with Westminster Presbyterian Church in DeKalb as part of an internship for the LGBT studies certificate program at NIU. Lash also recently spoke at a panel about faith and LGBTQ identities, presented research to undergraduate students about biblical interpretations of homosexuality and is the secretary for NIU’s presidential commission for sexual orientation and gender identity.

Lash’s goals are to raise awareness that LGBTQ identities are not at odds with Christianity and to give churches leaders who want to be affirming, inclusive and accepting the tools to do so.

“There’s a sense from a lot of people that those two communities don’t mix, and that sense is absolutely not true,” Lash said. “There is a plethora of affirming churches out there; it’s just that the Westboro Baptist types are louder.”

The class is a five-week Sunday school program for adults that ex-

plores scriptures commonly referenced against homosexuality and tries to put them into historic and linguistic context, Lash said.

Lash said they also put across the message that those who disagree can maintain their beliefs without being hateful or excluding others.

“I will end it by saying, ‘If this doesn’t convince you, that’s OK,’ and then we talk about the absolute radical love and inclusion Jesus showed to people who were on the margins,” Lash said. “Whether he agreed with what they were doing or not, he showed them absolutely nothing but love.”

Born: March 25, 1916 Died: December 26, 2016 Vera F. Worden, 100, of Sycamore died Monday, December 26, 2016, at Kishwaukee Hospital.

She was born on March 25, 1916, in rural Sycamore to C. Albert and Hazel Anna

Nelson.

Vera grew up on farms in the Sycamore and Genoa area.

She graduated from the Sycamore High School in 1934.

After her mother’s death in 1936, she helped raise her siblings. Vera married the love of her life, Russell “Babe” Worden on June 10, 1939 in Clinton, IA. They lived in Sycamore since 1939.

She worked as a homemaker and then worked in food service at the Southeast School in Sycamore, retiring after 20 years of service.

Vera and her husband spent their winters in Pharr, TX for 15 years.

Vera was a lifelong member of the Sycamore United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and belonged to the United Methodist Woman.

She was a leader of the Rachel Circle and the craft group.

She is survived by her son, William Worden.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2012 and her six siblings.

A Memorial Visitation will be on Saturday, April 29th from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the Sycamore United Methodist Church, 160 Johnson Ave., Sycamore.

Memorial Service to begin at 11:00 AM, with the Rev. Daniel Swinson and the Rev. Harlene Harden officiating.

A luncheon will follow the service at the church.

City Council to hear feedback on plans for downtown revitalization

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Data gathered from months of discussions between city staff and Northern Illinois University student leaders on how the downtown area can be improved will be presented during Monday’s City Council meeting.

Meetings with student leaders started taking place on a monthly basis in September. During the February meeting, a group of 70 students was taken downtown to see what restaurants and attractions the area has to offer.

Student feedback on subjects such as communication, street lighting, downtown transportation, weekend activities and sense of community was compiled into a report. Also included were results to a survey given to all student

attendees of the downtown tour.

The survey found that 90 percent of students preferred receiving communication regarding community events through their student email, 97 percent indicated that food-related community events would be of interest to them, and 90 percent indicated they learned something about DeKalb during their tour.

Access to bike-sharing stations and bus services as well as better lighting between the university and the downtown area also were brought up as changes needed to increase the likelihood of downtown visits, according to the report. The information will be presented during the City Council’s Committee of the Whole meeting at 5 p.m. at the DeKalb Municipal Building on 200 S. Fourth St. The regular meeting will begin at 6 p.m.

SYCAMORE – From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, the sisters of Sigma Lambda Sigma service sorority planted flowers, weeded gardens and befriended earthworms.

The sorority sisters were not only celebrating Earth Day. They were helping senior citizens at Somerset Farm, a condominium community for seniors age 55 and older in Sycamore.

The sorority was one of the NIU volunteer organizations that participated in NIU Cares Day. Somerset Farm resident Suzanne Lehto said that without the volunteers’ help, many of the flower beds would not be maintained. She said she was thankful that volunteers weeded and prepared the two memorial garden flower beds that residents have planted in memory of those they have loved and lost.

“Many of the residents are unable to tend to their gardens by themselves, and it’s really helpful to have the students’ help,” Lehto said. “The volunteers are terrific.

They’re cheerful, smart and strong-

ing, cleaning, sorting and assisting with events and various other tasks around the county.

Volunteers helped at more than 50 sites around DeKalb County, including churches, private residences, TAILS Humane Society, Family Services Agency, Voluntary Action Center, The Salvation Army, Glidden Homestead and Historical Center and the DeKalb County Forest Preserve.

Mary Piotrowski, vice president of Sigma Lambda Sigma, said helping DeKalb County organizations and residents allows her sorority to give back to the community. Last year, the sorority helped the Ellwood House, completing more than four months’ worth of yardwork in one day.

“Our sorority was founded on service, and our three pillars are service, leadership and sisterhood,” Piotrowski said. “Participating in NIU Cares Day is a tradition. We do it every year. It’s nice to volunteer together and show the community what we stand for. We see support from the community all around our campus, and it is rewarding to give back and help, even if it is just for one morning, one day.”

SPRINGFIELD – Amid a national push by unions and worker advocates for a $15 minimum wage, Illinois Democrats hope to pass an ambitious hike during the spring legislative session, despite a warning from Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner that he opposes an increase of any kind.

The proposal would lift the state’s minimum wage from its current $8.25 to $15 over the next five years, a more accelerated leap than previous adjustments in Illinois. It also would constitute a larger jump than increases toward $15 approved last year in New York and California, where the rates had been $9 and $10, respectively.

But as with previous efforts in Illinois, the measure likely is will be tied up in the state’s electoral politics.

Sponsors of the legislation acknowledge Rauner’s opposition but have signaled they want to force him to act on the measure ahead of next year’s gubernatorial election, in which he already faces half a dozen Democratic challengers.

“We will get a really good opportunity to see where the governor stands,” said Rep. Will Guzzardi, a Chicago Democrat sponsoring the wage bill in the House.

Wheaton College student dies after track, field incident

WHEATON – A Wheaton College freshman died Saturday after accidentally being struck by a hammer during a track and field meet, according to a college news release.

Ethan Roser, 19, a transfer student from Cincinnati, was volunteering at the Wheaton College competition when he was hit about 4:15 p.m. during the hammer throw event, the release stated.

Wheaton College Public Safety and city of Wheaton paramedics responded immediately, and Roser was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he was pronounced dead, according to the release.

Eastern Illinois University tries to boost enrollment

CHARLESTON – Eastern Illinois University has boosted its marketing campaigns, social media outreach and events for admitted students in an attempt to reverse a recent trend of declining enrollment. The university’s figures show that total enrollment has declined from more than 8,500 in the fall of 2015 to fewer than 6,700 this spring. Enrollment numbers usually drop a bit each spring because of December graduations.

Josh Norman, associate vice president for enrollment management, told the Journal Gazette and Times-Courier that the university is facing statewide economic and political issues that have resulted in Illinois being the second biggest exporter of students among the 50 states.

Wheaton military museum to reopen in summer

WHEATON – A Chicago-area military museum is set to reopen this summer after nearly a year of renovations and an $8 million redesign.

The First Division Museum in Wheaton is scheduled to open Aug. 26. It chronicles the Army’s 1st Infantry Division, known as the “Big Red One” for its distinctive shoulder patch. It was established in 1917, making it the oldest division in the armed forces.

The Daily Herald reported that executive director Paul Herbert, a retired colonel, has helped collect artifacts and stories for years.

Among the exhibits is the story of Ross McGinnis, a 19-year-old private first class who won the Medal of Honor posthumously. He gave up his life to save four others from a grenade blast inside a Humvee about a decade ago in Iraq.

Business leaders claim increasing the rate puts Illinois at a competitive disadvantage, driving companies across state lines or forcing them to reduce staff.

Labor unions and other allies of the national “Fight for $15” campaign contend raising the minimum wage boosts the economy by putting more money into pockets of low-wage workers, decreasing reliance on government assistance.

Advocates have said anything less than $15 falls far short of the cost of living for millions of Illinoisans. They point to research including a 2016 report from the University of Illinois that shows at least 34 percent of Illinois workers earn less than $15 an hour, many of them while helping to support a family.

Pike County archaeological artifact travels into space

QUINCY – A stone spear point from Pike County is one of the few archaeological artifacts to travel with an astronaut into space.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reported that from Denver that astronaut Kjell Lindgren approached the Denver Museum of Nature and Science in 2014 before a 141day tour aboard the International Space Station. He offered to take something from the museum with him.

Museum officials selected a 13,000-year-old Clovis point after considering size constraints, rareness and durability.

The object was chosen for its connection to the first people to occupy the prehistoric Americas.

Officials said both the tool and the space station are tangible symbols of human wanderlust and the ability to break through barriers into unknown territory.

Lindgren and the Clovis point returned to Earth in late 2015.

Battles over health care, budget awaiting Trump

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump is heading into one of the most challenging weeks of his presidency, juggling a renewed health care push and a looming budget deadline. It’s all complicated by a potential showdown with Democrats over paying for a border wall.

The symbolic 100-day mark for the administration is Saturday. That’s the same day government could shut down without a budget deal.

Trump has announced a rally in Pennsylvania that day.

Despite Trump’s dismissal that the 100-day marker is “artificial,” the White House is planning a packed week of activities leading up to Saturday. Trump will sign executive orders on energy and rural policies, meet with the president of Argentina and travel to Atlanta for a National Rifle Association event.

Top aides also will fan out around the country to promote the administration.

Aides stressed on Sunday talk shows that funding a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border and a vote on an effort to repeal and replace President Barack Obama’s health care law were priorities. But they also suggested a shutdown could be avoided.

“I don’t think anyone foresees or expects or would want a shutdown,” said budget director Mick Mulvaney on “Fox News Sunday.”

Trump would like to revive a failed effort by House Republicans to replace the Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare.” He also hopes to use a $1 trillion catchall spending bill to salvage victories on his promised border wall, a multibillion-dollar down payment on a Pentagon buildup, and perhaps a crackdown on cities that refuse to cooperate with immigration enforcement by federal au-

White House chief of staff Reince Priebus said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he believes the spending bill will include “something satisfactory” to reflect Trump’s desire to build a wall. The legislation would keep the government running through Sept. 30, the end of the budget year.

“We expect the priorities of the president to be reflected,” Priebus said, citing ongoing talks with the House and the Senate. He added that “it’ll be enough in the negotiation to move forward either with construction or the planning ... to get going on the border wall and border security.”

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California described a border wall as “immoral” and “expensive” when asked if there was any scenario in which Democrats will agree to money for a wall to avoid a shutdown.

“Democrats do not support the wall,” she said, speaking also on NBC. “Republicans on

the border states do not support the wall.”

“The Republicans have the votes in the House and the Senate and the White House to keep government open. The burden to keep it open is on the Republicans,” Pelosi said.

She noted that when Trump promised to build a wall during his campaign, he never indicated he would “pass billions of dollars of cost of the wall onto the taxpayer.”

Trump weighed in on his proposed border wall Sunday on Twitter, saying “Eventually, but at a later date so we can get started early, Mexico will be paying, in some form, for the badly needed border wall.”

Trump has repeatedly asserted that Mexico would pay for the wall, which he says is necessary to stop the flow of immigrants crossing the border illegally as well as drug smugglers.

On Obama’s health law, Priebus said he’d like to have a vote on the GOP repeal-and-replace bill in the House this coming week. But he insisted it didn’t make too much difference to the White House whether the vote came next “Friday or Saturday or Monday.”

“It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” he said.

JERASH CAMP, Jordan – As a boy, Palestinian Abdullah Abu Massoud fled the war over the birth of Israel in 1948 and sought refuge in the nearby Gaza Strip.

As an adult, Abu Massoud was displaced again when Israeli forces captured Gaza, along with the West Bank and east Jerusalem, in 1967. He escaped to Jordan, where he has been living in a refugee camp for 50 years.

Now 77, Abu Massoud is the whitehaired patriarch of a refugee family spanning five generations, including a great-great-granddaughter. The future looks bleak.

“Fifty years have passed without a step forward,” Abu Massoud said. “We don’t belong here.”

The plight of Palestinians uprooted by Israeli-Arab wars is one of the world’s longest-running refugee crises,

and a solution would likely require setting up a state of Palestine that would take in large numbers of them. Such a solution appears distant, even as President Donald Trump says he wants to try to broker an Israeli-Palestinian agreement.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are being displaced again by regional conflicts, including civil war in Syria. The head of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which helps displaced Palestinians, said they are no longer the world’s focus.

“We are dealing here with a community that has essentially reached a crisis of existential nature,” Pierre Kraehenbuehl said.

Abdullah Abu Massoud was born in a Bedouin encampment in what is now Israel. His family fled Israeli forces during the war over Israel’s creation, walking to Egyptian-run Gaza. More than 700,000 Palestinians were uprooted at the time.

In his 20s, Abu Massoud married Bassama, an Egyptian, and settled in Gaza. Bassama, 72, said that after

Israel was offering transportation to Jordan, Bassama said.

In April 1968, the Abu Massouds and other displaced Palestinians from Gaza boarded a truck to Jordan’s border.

From there, they took buses to an area near the town of Jerash where UNRWA was setting up a tent camp. Bassama remembers her feet sticking out of the tiny tent while she slept.

Under U.S. proposals in previous Israeli-Palestinian talks, a Palestinian state created from lands Israel captured in 1967 would welcome families like the Abu Massouds. In addition, an agreed upon number of refugees would be allowed to return to Israel and others could opt to stay in their host countries.

But disagreements remained, and talks failed. Palestinians wanted Israel to accept moral responsibility for the plight of refugees. Israel feared this would lead to a large-scale return to Israel and dilute its Jewish majority.

There have been no serious negotiations since gaps widened with the 2009 election of Benjamin Netanyahu as Is-

rael’s prime minister. Continued Israeli settlement expansion made a partition deal more difficult.

Today, 5.3 million Palestinians and their descendants are registered with UNRWA in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank and Gaza Strip, making them eligible for health and education services. A 29-year-old grandson of Bassama and Abdullah, Alaa Abu Awad, has never set foot in historic Palestine, the land between the Mediterranean and the Jordan River. But he clings to an idealized image of Gaza to help him deal with his statelessness. He has tacked a Palestinian flag to the wall of his shop in Jerash camp.

“It’s the flag of my homeland,” said Abu Awad.

Most Palestinians in Jordan received citizenship as descendants of refugees from the neighboring West Bank, which was under Jordanian control for two decades, until 1967. The offspring of those who arrived from Gaza – more than 150,000 – are still temporary residents.

They can’t own property and are barred from government jobs.

Bill imperils public’s right to know Legislation to allow the dissemination of public notices only on the internet in Illinois is a radical departure from the proven public notice system that all other states use. As a result, the public’s right to know would suffer. The bill should be defeated.

Dissemination of information to citizens through publication of public notices protects the public’s right to know.

Through public notices, units of government inform the public about what they are doing or proposing which, in turn, helps the pubic effectively engage in the democratic process. The cost for public notices is minimal to each unit of government, usually less than a 10th of a percent of the budget.

Legislation that took effect five years ago goes further. The Illinois Legislature unanimously approved a bill requiring newspapers to post all public notices they print on a public, free-access centralized website at no additional cost to government. That website is PublicNoticeIllinois.com.

The system works well. Newspapers disseminate public notices and then certify that governments have complied with public notice laws.

The public is served efficiently, in print and online.

However, some people want to change it.

Senate Bill 2032 would allow units of government to bypass publishing notices in local newspapers and, instead, post public notices on their own websites or on a state-run website.

State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, introduced the bill in February; a Senate committee is reviewing it.

Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti is a strong supporter; a task force she headed issued a report in December 2015 that favors the concept of “modernizing public notices.”

Frankly, we are appalled by their cavalier attitude toward public notices and government transparency.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

As a respected, independent third party, newspapers reliably transmit this information in print and online.

Newspapers for centuries have played a key role in the legal process of public notices by publishing, certifying and archiving them. It’s a long proven process.

By contrast, government is unreliable.

The Citizens Advocacy Center reviewed Illinois local governments’ track record for posting notices online in three basic areas – public meeting notices, public meeting agendas and approved minutes from public meetings – as required by law through the Open Meetings Act. Of more than 750 websites surveyed, only 73 percent of governments complied with posting meeting notices, 57 percent complied with posting an agenda and a mere 48 percent complied with posting approved meeting minutes.

That’s unacceptable.

What can the public expect if local governments bypass newspapers and post public notices online?

The same dismal record of noncompliance and lawbreaking.

That would be a terrible blow to transparency.

We are unconvinced that public notices, if placed only on government-controlled websites, would have anything close to the same readership they have now.

Senate Bill 2032 is a radical departure from the proven public notice system that all other states use.

Government would inevitably become less transparent, especially for people who aren’t online.

And the public’s right to know, rather than being protected, would be diminished.

Politicians like Oberweis and Sanguinetti ought to know better.

They should realize that public notices in Illinois were “modernized” more than five years ago through legislation establishing the centralized website, which is PNI. The bill should be defeated.

The CFPB-mandated features may or may not be desirable to consumers, but they certainly will come with a price as compliance costs are passed on to consumers. Mandating these features will thus undermine the primary benefit – the low cost – that attracts so many low-income Americans to prepaid cards in the first place.

Government bureaucrats are taking away the right of individuals to choose the set of product features that best fits their individual circumstances with a one-size-fits-all regulation.

Not surprisingly, the government is a driving force behind rising banking costs and the reason so many people are turning to prepaid cards. Red tape and regulations that have made banking ever more expensive include the Durbin amendment price controls on debit card swipe fees, which have led to a decline in the availability of free checking accounts and reductions in card benefits.

The extreme scope and high cost of regulations under Dodd-Frank are why more and more Americans are now considered “unbanked.” If members of Congress allow the prepaid card rule to stand, they will deny the poor a useful financial instrument yet again.

To make matters worse, the rule is expansive enough to encompass digital services such as PayPal and Google Wallet, providing an unnecessary barrier to an emerging technology and limiting its potential to revolutionize the payment industry. Who knows how many innovations won’t occur because of this overregulation?

The CFPB has, in particular, made it a habit of pursuing policies that harm the very individuals whose interests it claims to be protecting. It has long targeted for destruction the small-dollar loan industry, without which many low-income Americans would have nowhere to turn to cover an unexpected bill. Now it wants to make it more difficult for these same people to use what little income their hard work earns.

The poor can’t afford any more of the CFPB’s “protections.”

Congress still has the option to roll back the rule using the Congressional Review Act, which has been used to undo several other costly Obama-era regulations. It would truly protect consumers if Congress were to do so again in this case.

Protectionism will sink both the economy and the markets

Reality is setting in. The irrational exuberance following the election is dimming, as financial reporters note.

See the Wall Street Journal: “There are signs that the sugar rush of Donald Trump’s victory and global-growth hopes has faded, raising doubts among some investors about whether stocks can stay high. With the economy near full capacity, even tepid growth could be enough to push up wages and inflation, hurting profits and keeping the Fed on alert to raise rates. Rising rates and weak growth are a terrible combination, so investors should take the warnings seriously and hope that the signs are wrong.”

Moreover, President Trump, as he has his entire career, has overpromised and underdelivered. There is no healthcare reform or tax reform in sight. He’ll struggle to keep the government open if he insists on including money for the border-wall boondoggle.

His agenda is ill-suited to deal with structural, persistent problems that have

suppressed growth (e.g., low productivity, a mismatch between worker skills and job openings). Indeed, if he gets his way, he may well have a negative impact on the economy.

Douglas Irwin writes in Foreign Affairs: “Although Trump’s professed goal is to ‘get a better deal’ on trade, his brand of economic nationalism is just one step away from old-fashioned protectionism.

The president claimed that “protection will lead to great prosperity and strength.”

Yet the opposite is true. An “America first” trade policy would do nothing to create new manufacturing jobs or narrow the trade deficit, the gap between imports and exports.

Instead, it risks triggering a global trade war that would prove damaging to all countries. A slide toward protectionism also would undermine the institutions that the United States has long worked to support, such as the World Trade Organization, which have made meaningful contributions to global peace and prosperity.”

As with North Korea, the danger

here is that his big talk will generate an overreaction, which no one wants: “As the Trump administration plots its next move, it should take care to distinguish between what trade policy can achieve and what it cannot, and between changes to current policy that would be constructive and those that would prove counterproductive. It must also recognize that protectionism at home can lead to protectionism abroad.

“Indeed, perhaps the greatest danger of Trump’s trade policy is that a misstep might do irreparable damage to the open world trading system that the United States had, until now, so assiduously promoted since World War II. That system constrains the policies of the 163 other WTO members, with which the United States trades.

“If the United States backs away from current trade rules, those countries will feel free to discriminate against the United States, and the system will unravel-doing grave damage not only to the global economy but also to the very Americans Trump claims to represent.”

There is also an opportunity cost here. Trade is not the source of our woes

and has not caused us to lose “millions of jobs.” It’s actually part of the solution – as are immigration reform, infrastructure investment, funding science and increased choice of postsecondary education options – to jump-starting growth and increasing wages.

If you care about American workers, you should hope Trump’s protectionist efforts are as inept as his health care initiative. Rather than do counterproductive things (e.g., protectionism, slashing funding for the National Institutes of Health and other research, immigration exclusionism), Trump might ask Gary Cohn, director of the National Economic Council, or Kevin Hassett, Trump’s nominee to chair the Council of Economic Advisers, if free trade, robust legal immigration, infrastructure funding and investment in workers and scientific research would be net positives for the economy. Better yet, ask Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook or General Electric Chief Executive Jeffrey Immelt.

DeKALB – At the beginning of the Northern Illinois football team’s spring season, the question was whether junior Ryan Graham or sophomore Daniel Santacaterina would be the starting quarterback.

Now redshirt freshman Marcus Childers has barged his way into the conversation.

The Huskies wrapped up their spring season with their 15th practice in lieu of the Huskie Bowl on a sunny Saturday afternoon, and the quarterback question is muddled as ever with three of them taking snaps with the first-string offense.

“That’s going to take care of itself,” NIU coach Rod Carey said. “You don’t want to play three guys there, two guys there – you want to play one.

That one guy will rear his head. He hasn’t yet. It’s been a good back and forth between the top three guys.”

NIU quarterbacks coach Craig Harmon said that Childers has had a strong final two weeks of the spring season, and things are starting to click for the 6-foot, 229-pound redshirt freshman from Adairsville, Georgia.

Childers started the spring working with the second-string offense, while Graham and Santacaterina split time with the first string.

In Saturday’s practice, which had a crowd of fans on hand, Childers got the most time with the first string.

“He moves the chains,” Carey said. “When you’re talking about a redshirt freshman who hasn’t played in a game yet, that’s a pretty impressive thing when you’re running with the ones, to keep the chains moving.”

Although Childers hasn’t had any game experience for the Huskies, both Graham and Santacaterina have played – and won – in games for NIU. Graham has played in 17 games in his two seasons because of injuries to quarterbacks Drew Hare and Anthony Maddie, and he said that experience has helped him stay calm during the battle for the starting spot in the 2017 season.

“You just have to stay calm in your mind,” said Graham, who has thrown for 1,371 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions in his two seasons.

“You can’t force anything and think you have to make a play right now.

If you go out there like you have to prove something and you have to make plays all the time, then you’re not going to do well. I’ve learned that. ... Just because I’ve had a little expe-

I have to be constant, be consistent and go through my reads.”

For Santacaterina, he started last season No. 4 on the depth chart and ended up starting the final game of the season as the injury bug hit the quarterbacks for the second consecutive season. He took over midway through the Eastern Michigan game – a 31-24 comeback win in overtime for the Huskies – and started in the 31-21 win at Kent State.

“Lots of ups and down in spring ball; when you have 15 practices, you have to have 15 good practices,” said Santacaterina, who passed for 361 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions and rushed for 107 yards last year. “Sometimes you’re going to have a good practice, sometimes you’re going to struggle a little bit, and what you have to focus on is the positives and fixing the mistakes.

You’re going to make mistakes, and the spring is OK to mess up; you just have to fix the mistakes.”

Carey said that although the quarterback battle still is up in the air, some of the positions that were in question have been figured out –

including Ryan Roberts getting the edge in one of the offensive line spots.

This is the first spring during Carey’s tenure that the Huskies came into it not having a winning record, finishing the year 5-7 and missing a bowl game for the first time since 2007.

However, Carey spoke glowingly about how the team responded this spring.

“This is by far the best spring I’ve been a part of since I’ve been here as a head coach or offensive coordinator,” said Carey, who took over before the 2013 Orange Bowl. “They were hungry to get on the field, and I think that is a powerful thing, and they practiced like it for 15 straight practices. We had to pull them back, and I think that’s a good thing when you have to pull a team back.”

“Coming down the straight going into the last lap, when I went into the lead, it was kind of surreal because this a fast meet,” Marks said. “I might actually be about to win this. This is crazy.”

Host Kaneland took third, bolstered by its field and long-distance athletes – pole vaulter Danny Walker, shot putter/discus thrower Clayton Hannula and runner Matthew Richtman shined for the Knights.

Walker took first in the pole vault, finishing with a height of 15 feet, 1 inch.

Richtman outpaced the crowd by almost 30 seconds with a time of 9:40 in the 3,200. DeKalb runner Jacob Trapp took second and Emmanuel Yepiz took third.

“I thought we competed pretty hard,” Kaneland coach Andy Drendel said. “Richtman, Walker and Hannula stepped up. And you expect them to. They’ve been doing it all year.”

Sycamore finished 11th with the usual strong performance from Connor Weckerly, who finished second in the discus.

“We get to see how we compete against conference rivals,” Sycamore coach Pete Piccony said. “We’re right where we need to be.”

DeKalb senior Zuerek Day won the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15.39, but faltered in the 300 hurdles, finishing seventh.

“Last year I got second and third in the 110 and 300,” Day said. “I got first in the 110s, but the 300s didn’t go so well.”

For DeKalb coach Tim Holt, the day was another chance for the Barbs to step toward their goals.

“I keep telling them each week it’s like climbing the ladder,” Holt said.

“Each week we need to knock those times down.”

Ninth straight tourney win caps big week for DeKalb

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The week for the DeKalb girls soccer team started with a win at Kaneland – the first against the Knights since 2014.

It ended Saturday with a 1-0 win over Grayslake North for the Barbs’ ninth straight BarbFest title, and in between, they ended Geneseo’s 21-game regular-season unbeaten streak.

“Yeah, not a bad week,” DeKalb forward and BarbFest MVP Hanna Hickey said with a laugh.

“We definitely have a lot of momentum.”

Hickey scored the lone Barb goal against Grayslake North (6-2-2) with 10 minutes left, giving the Barbs another BarbFest title. Mckenna Wallin sent the ball in from far up the left side past the Knights’ defense, and Hickey tracked it down and redirected it in for the goal.

The Barbs (8-4) were peppering the net early in the game but were just missing shots throughout the first half.

They had fewer second-half chances but connected on the one that mattered.

“We had a bunch of through balls, but we could finish there,” Hickey said. “That was a good pass, and I was able to just touch it in.”

DeKalb coach PJ Hamilton said his team has had different players step up all week, and Hickey responded when the team needed it Saturday.

“We’ve come a long way from the start of this season and some hiccups early. We’re continuing to find a way each and every game.”

“We were talking about it at halftime – ‘We’re going to need a special moment, now which player is going to go grab that special moment?’ ” Hamilton said. “We get that cross in, and we find the back of the net by a kid who’s playing some really, really good soccer.”

The Barbs won the three games this week by a combined 4-0, with Hickey scoring two of those goals.

Goalkeeper Megan Hansen recorded three shutouts, and the defense helped pave the way for that, Hamilton said.

“We really try to focus solely on the next game we have,” defender Emma Rourke said. “We don’t think about what happened in the past or what else we have to come.”

After starting 0-3, the Barbs have won eight of

nine, including six straight.

“We’ve come a long way from the start of this season and some hiccups early,” Hamilton said.

“We’re continuing to find a way each and every game.”

By the numbers: Rourke and Christian Ryzhov made the all-tournament team for DeKalb. Renne Corriveau was Hinckley-Big Rock’s representative, and for Indian Creek, Marisa VanWyhe was selected. The Royals and Timberwolves tied Saturday when IC got a goal in the final minute from Morgan Johnson. Corriveau scored early for the Royals. Indian Creek went on to beat Jefferson to take fifth. Yorkville beat Sterling for third.

Beyond the stats: The Knights were assaulting the net in the final minute, but Hansen came up with a diving save on a shot that originally bounced away from her, and she was able to corral it for the save.

They said it: “We’ve put a lot of hard work into this tournament, making harder competition every year,” Hickey said. “It just feels good to have a good game (to win the title). They gave us a really good game, and that makes it feel even better.”

Up next: The Barbs host Rochelle at 5 p.m. Tuesday, then Glenbard South at 6 p.m. Wednesday before a six-day break. The Knights head to Lake Forest Academy.

jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – There were a handful of point guards sitting in the United Center on Sunday, and not one could stop the inevitable from happening to the Bulls.

Rajon Rondo was still in street clothes and a cast, nursing the right thumb fracture suffered in the Game 2 win.

Cameron Payne, who Bulls general manager Gar Forman acquired at the trade deadline from the Thunder and labeled “the point guard of the future,” was inactive.

Heck, even former Bull Derrick Rose was sitting courtside, strolling into the game late as a spectator.

And not one could offer up any aid.

A bad day for the Bulls, as that 2-0 lead they once had in the first-round best-of-seven series with the Celtics is now tied at 2-2, thanks to Boston’s 104-95 win, as well as 33 points from their AllStar point guard Isaiah Thomas.

Now coach Fred Hoiberg really has to do some searching if he plans to pull the upset over the top-seeded team in the Eastern Conference, with Game 5 scheduled for Wednesday in Boston.

Despite giving it some serious thought after the Game 3 loss, Hoiberg decided to stay with Jerian Grant in Rondo’s starting point guard spot. After all, it was Grant who was first labeled “point guard of the future” by the front

office when they acquired him in the Rose trade last summer.

Grant lasted just under five minutes of the first quarter, going 0 for 3 and earning the quick hook.

Then it was Michael Carter-Williams’ turn.

It was Carter-Williams who was acquired in training camp, kind of that point guard of the future 2.0. After the former NBA Rookie of the Year picked up two quick fouls, however, Hoiberg was searching. So a quick glimpse way down the bench, and there he was – the seldom-used Isaiah Canaan.

Canaan, signed in the offseason to add some outside shooting, had only appeared in two games since April 1, and

only in mop-up duty.

Not only did Canaan offer up a spark against the Celtics, but he also started the second half for Hoiberg.

To Hoiberg’s credit, he rode Canaan into the third quarter, and the Bulls not only battled back from what was a 20-point deficit in the first half, but took a two-point lead with 4:35 left in the third after a Robin Lopez basket.

Thomas scored 10 points in Boston’s 12-0 run, giving the Celtics a 79-70 lead going into the final stanza.

The Bulls pulled to within five in the fourth, but after five straight points from Thomas, the lead was 10 with 9:01 left. A lead the Celtics wouldn’t relinquish.

The Genoa-Kingston softball team beat Dakota, 10-1, in the third-place game of the Byron tournament Saturday.

The Cogs scored six in the third inning with RBIs from Cassie Bade, Leah Fowler, Leea Perry and Madison Wagner. The Cogs pounded out 13 hits in the game.

They lost a semifinal, 9-1, to Huntley.

G-K scored first in that one, but the Red Raiders scored five in the bottom of the first. Bade and Ashley Peterson had the only hits for the Cogs.

The Cogs won their quarterfinal match, 5-2, against Boylan. Peterson had an RBI double, and Wagner had a two-run double as part of a five-run third. Fowler also had a two-run single.

G-K opened with an 11-2 win against Winnebago. Olivia Simmons had a home run in the win. Bade, Perry and Kayti Beauchamp each had multiple hits.

Sycamore swept by Prairie Ridge: The Spartans lost, 9-6, and, 5-4, to the Wolves.

Joslin Peck had two hits in the early game, with Mia Richards driving home two runs. Hannah Mizgalski had two RBIs but took the loss. She allowed five earned runs in four innings.

In the late game, Ally Versluys took the loss, allowing two earned runs in four innings of relief. Richards had two hits, as did Kayliegh Reifsteck and Amanda Swedberg.

The Spartans (5-12-1) play at Kaneland on Tuesday.

Renteria: Sox can learn from Indians

CHICAGO – Learning by doing is one way to teach a young team how to succeed.

Learning by watching a successful team is another, and White Sox manager Rick Renteria likes to employ both.

Watching how the defending American League champion Indians play – even in a game where they commit three errors leading to two unearned runs – is part of the schooling.

“They still grind out at-bats. They’re not going to quit. Even when they were down, they aren’t going to lie down for anyone,” he said.

“Our challenge is we have to [learn] to do the same.”

The learning curve has to be drawn for the rebuilding Sox, but they earned a good grade Sunday in a 6-2 victory, salvaging the last game of a three-game series.

After failing to score in the first two games – and not scoring since the fifth inning of their last game in New York – shortstop Tim Anderson lit the fire with a leadoff double off Danny Salazar (1-2), whom the Sox bested two weeks ago in Cleveland. It sparked a three-run inning, and emotions on the team.

“There was a lot of energy. It’s easy for a team to feed off that once you get off to a great start.”

It made things easier for Sox starter Derek Holland (2-2), who provided his own lifts in the fifth when the Indians mounted their best threat with runners at second and third and no outs.

Holland struck out Roberto Perez and Michael Martinez before walking Carlos Santana to load the bases.

But he struck out Francisco Lindor to end the inning.

“That was huge,” Renteria said. “It was a big jam. He had some guys coming up that could do some damage. For us, it was big.”

After spending parts of the past three seasons on the disabled list, the veteran lefty has been a steady early performer for his new team. And he has continued the mastery over the Indians he showed in his seven seasons with the Texas Rangers.

Holland improved to 7-1 lifetime against the Indians, with a 2.27 ERA in 11 career starts against them. The only

run off him Sunday was a solo home run

by Lindor leading off the fourth.

“No matter what, that’s an unbelievable team,” he said. “They’ve done some great things for the state of Ohio, I’ve got a lot of friends and family back there who pull for them – except when they’re playing me,” Holland said. “Just because I have a good record against them, every day you’ve got to show up and go after it.

Never give in to them.”

That is Renteria’s mantra as well, whether it’s the defending AL champs or a team that knows how to exploit its own assets.

“I just think in terms of baseball, you watch how other clubs might be performing, advancing runners or backing up plays on defense,” he said. “You point out when other clubs are doing something well that you want to emulate.

“The Indians are a fighting club. We want to be able to elevate and execute our game like that.”

The Sox helped their stagnating offense by taking advantage of Cleveland errors in the first and sixth while their own defense was solid.

“Defense made the plays for me,” Holland said of the Sox turning two double plays.

“They are a very, very good team with very tough pitching,” Jose Abreu said of the Indians. “But we did our job today.”

Reds, soft-tossing Arroyo put crimp in Cubs’ vibe

CINCINNATI – Anthony Rizzo is heating up for the Cubs. The bullpen is looking better. And they left Cincinnati on Sunday with a series win for the fifth time in six series to start the season.

But that was about it. If you were looking for a feel-good vibe in the Cubs’ clubhouse after Sunday’s 7-5 loss to the Reds, you were still looking after the last piece of carry-on luggage rolled out of the room on their way to Pittsburgh.

Especially if you were looking in John Lackey’s corner.

“Yeah, I don’t care about the series right now. I’m [ticked],” said Lackey, the Cubs’ starter who lost for the third consecutive start on a strange day when most things that could go wrong did.

“I felt like I definitely pitched a lot better than the numbers are going to show,” he said. “Two out of the first three runs were a couple balls that kind

of fell in on me. And I really didn’t give up a whole lot of hard contact. What are you going to do?”

Well, there was that second-inning home run that Scott Schebler hit. And the three-run double to the left-center gap in the sixth by Patrick Kivlehan – a bench guy who wasn’t even in the lineup until Zack Cozart was scratched because of a sore wrist.

If anything, this was a day that summed up the nature of the Cubs’ stutter-step start to their championship defense.

Consider the “dominant” pitching performance by Reds starter Bronson Arroyo, who before April 8 hadn’t pitched in a big-league game in three seasons because of multiple arm injuries.

His velocity ranging most of the day from 75 mph to 82 mph, Arroyo baffled the Cubs for six innings, retiring the first 10 he faced, allowing two runs on a Kris Bryant single followed by a Rizzo

homer in the fourth and striking out seven.

“Obviously, he’s throwing below hitting speed right now,” catcher Miguel Montero said.

Meanwhile the Cubs have trailed in nine consecutive games (losing five of them).

They haven’t had a quality start from the rotation since Jon Lester’s seven scoreless innings in a no-decision a week earlier against the Pirates.

And Bryant hasn’t had a multihit game since his two-homer game the day before that Lester start. The league’s reigning MVP – and player with MLB’s hottest-selling jersey – is hitting .230 with 19 strikeouts (second to Kyle Schwarber on the team).

“Some of it is he’s fouling his pitch off,” said manager Joe Maddon, who said he’s not even sure how often Bryant’s getting his pitch to hit.

“But I’m kind of encouraged because were in decent shape right now, and he

really hasn’t gotten off yet. Rizzo has.

Schwarber has done a great job of getting on base and getting some big hits, but he’s still got a lot left in the tank, too. …

“Some guys really haven’t kicked it in gear yet, and we’re still sitting in decent shape.”

This is the kind of day it was for him: On the ninth pitch of the first at-bat of the game, Billy Hamilton blooped a ball to center that Jon Jay allowed to fall in front of him for a hit after getting a bad jump. Next two pitches: steals of second and third.

One out later, Joey Votto hit a sacrifice fly for the quick lead.

Errors on a questionable scoring decision on a ball past Rizzo and a bad throw by Bryant contributed to two unearned runs during a four-run sixth against Lackey – also costing any chance Lackey had of pitching deeper in the game.

SAN ANTONIO – Kevin Chappell made an 8-foot putt on the final hole to win the Valero Texas Open by one stroke on Sunday.

Chappell had a 4-under-par 68 in the final round to finish at 12 under for the tournament, edging Brooks Koepka at TPC San Antonio to earn his first PGA Tour victory in his 180th career start.

Koepka, a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team last year, was looking for his second PGA Tour win. He had the best round of the day at 7-under 65. Before Chappell came down the 18th hole, Koepka had birdied the hole with a 3-foot putt to tie him.

Second-round co-leader Tony Finau got in a position to tie Koepka when he birdied four of five holes on the back nine. But his par-bogey finish left him to settle for a final-round 69 and a third-place tie with Kevin Tway (69) at 9 under.

As for the merits or risks of taking the drug for more than two weeks, there are no good long-term trials of diphenhydramine, and prolonged use raises the potential for problems. Further, two weeks of using sedating antihistamines can create some degree of tolerance to their sleep-inducing effects, so their effectiveness may wane.

The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine does not recommend the use of antihistamines for chronic insomnia. Among the effects of sedating antihistamines are constipation, retention of urine in the bladder and a drop of blood pressure upon standing.

Further, diphenhydramine’s half-life, the time it takes for the drug to lose half of its activity, is 9 hours in adults, but 13.5 hours in elderly individuals. That means the drug still is having effects long after one awakes.

Sedating antihistamines also can cause grogginess, confusion and memory loss. This is especially concerning in the elderly.

I would re-evaluate whether diphenhydramine is really helping you sleep. You also should consider whether the medication is causing any side effects. Other medications can be used as sleep aids, but the best move for the long term is to improve your sleep hygiene, such as using the bed for sleep and not for watching television.

Dear Doctor: I’m leery of sleep drugs, so I’ve been taking Benadryl to help me sleep.

Now I read it should be taken only for a limited time. What’s the story on this drug?

Dear Reader: Diphenhydramine HCL, or Benadryl, is a sedating antihistamine. The medication has been used since 1946 for allergies, but because it is sleep-inducing, people also have used it to help them sleep.

Unlike the allergy medications Claritin, Zyrtec or Allegra, this medication blocks histamine receptors in the brain. Histamine is necessary to promote wakefulness, motivation and goal-directed behaviors; when the receptors for histamine are blocked, drowsiness occurs. Many companies have marketed diphenhydramine and doxylamine (another sedating antihistamine) for insomnia under different brand names.

Researchers have conducted many studies of diphenhydramine for insomnia, but most have been small. One of the larger studies looked at individuals with an average age of 44 years who had mild insomnia. In this study, people either took diphenhydramine or a placebo. The diphenhydramine group switched to a placebo after two weeks. The participants kept diaries of how long it took them to fall asleep, their total sleep time and the number of times they awoke.

Researchers found no difference between the drug group and the placebo group in the time needed to fall asleep. However, sleep quality improved significantly among those taking the drug. Total sleep time also improved with diphenhydramine, but only by 29 minutes. The authors did not find significant adverse effects and did not find rebound insomnia when the participants stopped diphenhydramine. The authors concluded that, for the short term, the drug

We would like to send a donation to honor the deceased. However, the only organization mentioned in the obituary is one we cannot support.

Last week, we looked at one-level and two-level negative doubles. But what happens when the overcall is at the three- or four-level?

In today’s deal, after South opens one heart and West overcalls four spades, what should North do?

With 13 points, North cannot pass.

At the two- or three-level, North would bid hearts, but to respond with five hearts risks ending in a 5-1 (5-0?) fit. The opening side needs to be more flexible.

North should double, just saying that he has too many points to pass, but no better bid to make. It is not for penalty, suggesting two or three trump tricks, because he cannot have those unless West is crazy. How does the opener react?

With a balanced hand, he passes and hopes that the contract fails.

But if he has a distributional hand, he bids, knowing that partner will put down some useful goodies in the dummy.

Here, South’s two spades are worrying, but he rebids five clubs, which is passed out. (Note that four spades doubled costs only 500.)

West cashes his two top spades, then shifts to a heart.

South must play the trump suit without loss. When you have nine trumps missing only the queen, normally you play for the drop: eight ever, nine nearly never. But here declarer knows that West has eight spades to East’s one. This swings the odds solidly in favor of a second-round club finesse. It is almost three times a better play to lead a club to dummy’s ace, then to run the club jack through East. Bingo -- plus 600.
