Real estate agents share dos, don’ts for buyers, sellers

DeKALB – Want an idea of just how much of a seller’s market it is this spring? It took longtime local real estate agent Bernie Stefani all of three days to sell a house down the street from his.

Was it priced to move? Did it fill a void in the market? Was it because spring is a hot time for house sales? Has the market recovered that much?

Stefani says yes, to all of the above.

“The move-up market, those houses between $125,000 and $175,000, is what we’ve been missing these past several years,” he said. “It’s a great time right now, if you’re a seller. It’s a seller’s market.”

According to the the trade association Illinois Realtors, home sales in the state climbed 9.6 percent in March compared with a year ago, with average home prices going up 10.7 percent.

Homes are moving faster, too, at an average of 67 days, compared with 77 days a year ago.

If you’re a buyer, there’s good news for you, too: Agents are bracing for dozens of listings to go live in the coming weeks, Stefani said.

Pro tips

Looking to buy? Your first appointment is with a lender, to get pre-approved for a loan. If you don’t have a bank in mind, a real estate agent can refer you.

Don’t just start looking at houses hoping to write an offer on the spot.

That mentality contributed to the market’s collapse in 2008.

“We want to know not what you think you can afford but what the lender knows you can afford,” said Stefani, who’s worked in real estate more than 20 years, the bulk of them with his current agency, Elm Street Realtors in Sycamore.

Lenders have many types of loans at their disposal, depending on your circumstances. There are advantages to be gained with proper planning. For instance, if you can put 20 percent down on a loan, you’ll avoid having to pay private mortgage insurance.

Once you know what you can afford, an agent has the most up-to-date, comprehensive information on listings.

Agents have access to disclosures that agents of sellers must sign off on, which can often clue the buyer into a house’s flaws. There might be a reason a slam-dunk property has sat on the market for nearly a year. Or maybe it’s because the seller priced it over the market, and has refused to budge.

Finding the house is only part of the process. Once an offer is accepted, costs remain – some mandatory, some optional. You’re going to have closing costs.

You’ve also got five days from the time you sign the contract to have the house inspected, which Stefani recommends.

riod, and there’s a major issue, you have no recourse.”

Inspections typically cost between $300 and $400, and take two to four hours, and Stefani recommends you bring an attorney along. If there’s a flaw, the attorney can write a letter saying it needs to be fixed, and if it isn’t, you can walk away from your contract without penalty.

If you’re selling

There’s a magic formula that, once cracked, will get a seller the maximum price for a house.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not location, location, location. It’s location, condition and price. Combining the first two factors will result in a price, which the seller can go with. If they’re “dream-

ing,” as Elm Street Realtors owner Nancy Edwards puts it, they can price it over the market.

If you go that route, set an alarm for two weeks out.

“The first two weeks are the most crucial to a seller. Once those two weeks are gone, especially in this market, your house is not new anymore,” Edwards said.

Agents go over a net equity sheet, made up of about eight factors, such as what is owed on the home, taxes and tax proration, to determine what you should expect to get from a sale.

Once you pick your price, there’s more work to be done. Agents advise on staging and generally making your home alluring. That means no dishes sitting out.

“Do you want to have the best $125,000 house? Of course you do,” Edwards said. “If you want the best, you have to prepare it to be the best.”

Agents solicit feedback from buyers who see houses, then relay that information to the seller.

Two-vehicle crash in DeKalb injures one

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A two-vehicle crash at the corner of state Route 23 and Perry Road resulted in a minor injury and a car rolling multiple times, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said that about 2 p.m., a 2009 Ford Escape driven by Joe Daebelliehn, 20, of Ottawa, was traveling south on Route 23 when it crashed into a 2006 Lexus driven by Bailey Kiley, 20, of Huntley, who was traveling west on Perry Street.

The impact caused Daebelliehn’s SUV to spin, then roll into a ditch along the southwest corner of the intersection.

A witness said she thought Kiley’s Lexus failed to make a complete stop at the sign on Perry Road and pulled in front of the SUV. Daebelliehn reported no injuries, and Kiley was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life threatening. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts.

Kiley was cited for not having a valid driver’s license and failure to yield at a stop intersection.

One of the greatest dangers for a buyer or seller is assuming they understand things that they don’t.

What’s escrow? Ask now, not later.

“It’s dangerous to not ask questions,” Edwards said.

The only thing agents can’t give is legal advice. Having survived the Great Recession, without reducing staff, the Elm Street brokers have learned a lot, too. They took classes from lenders in foreclosures and short sales, processes much more complicated and drawn-out

than garden-variety sales.

After about six years of recovering from the market collapse, the market is starting to see a return to the 3 percent property value increases that are historically typical.

“A lot of people don’t understand the market is coming back,” Stefani said.

“It’s back. Right now.”

One key piece of advice: Avoid inadvertently instigating an argument between agents. When you pick an agent, stick with that agent. Don’t call another one on a listing, or work with another at an open house. See something you like?

Call your agent.

“Things could get contentious,” Stefani said. “When you’re online, when you see a sign in front of any owner, call me. Do not call that listing agent. I’m old school – unless I’m on my deathbed, I’ll answer my phone.”

CHRISTA JO EVEN Born: May 27, 1942 Died: January 9, 2017

Christa Jo Even, 74, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Monday, January 9, 2017, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Born May 27, 1942, the daughter of Christopher and Charlotte Altier, Christa married Robert Even on December 30, 1967. Christa was a Media Director for the DeKalb school system, and later owned her own business selling antique jewelry and collectibles.

Christa and Robert traveled extensively and had friends around the world.

She is survived by her stepchildren, Timothy Even, Kerry (Candace) Even and Nancy (Peter) Ffitch; and grandchildren, Brendan and Taylor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert.

JACQUELYNN HARDER Jacquelynn (Jaci) Harder, age 80, passed away peacefully on April 8.

Jaci taught at DeKalb H.S. for 26 years and introduced computer technology into the curriculum. She was active at Westminster Presbyterian Church and a local adviser to the tri-Sigma Sorority at NIU. Jaci and her husband, Jim, retired to Leesburg, FL where she continued to volunteer in community and humanitarian efforts.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, James (Jim); son, John (Sue); granddaughters, Elle & Kaleigh.

Local PAC spends $4K on elections

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – After spending more than $4,000 to support campaigns of local city and school board candidates, the Barb City Action Committee is expected to remain intact through the next election cycle, according to an active member.

Had the political action committee disbanded, the remaining funds, more than $16,000 at the end of March, would have gone to The Salvation Army.

PAC member Cohen Barnes, president of SundogIT, a computer support service, said it’s important to see the committee continue.

“This really helped encourage some to run for office who may not have otherwise,” Barnes said. “To see so many members of the business community and multigenerational families making sure we have good people running for office was just fantastic.”

Most of the committee’s expenditures in the first quarter of 2017 went toward the campaign of Mayor-elect Jerry Smith.

In the week leading up to the election, the PAC spent more than $3,000 on radio advertising and signs for the campaign of Smith, who received nearly half the total vote against his three opponents, according to unofficial results.

“I would like to invite the other candidates who may not have decided what they want to do with their funds to contribute, but I would have to talk with the foundation,” Smith said. “It would be cool if we could designate funds to support civic efforts in the DeKalb area in perpetuity.”

Barb City Action Committee spokeswoman Christie Krupp had said the negative perception of receiving funding from a PAC might have discouraged some candidates from accepting money.

Krupp could not be reached for a comment Friday.

Barnes said the PAC’s funds show the community’s support of local candidates.

“If I had run for office, I would have taken pride in the financial support, knowing an overwhelming majority of the committee members are good people,” Barnes said. “I’m proud for our community to get people to form together to make an impact on local elections.”

SANDWICH – The Civil War ended in spring 1865, but the 10th Illinois Infantry Re-enactment Group has brought the war between the North and South back to life in Sandwich for the weekend.

The 10th Illinois Infantry Reenactment Group has set up a living history encampment at James Knights Park, 1001 N. Latham St. On Friday, more than 300 Sandwich students visited the encampment, which demonstrates how soldiers spent their time when not in battle.

The encampment is free and open to the public, with demonstrations given from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The encampment is sponsored by the 10th Illinois Regiment, the Sandwich Historical Society and the Sandwich Park District.

April 20 to 22, 1861, were the mustering dates of training for the 112 men who volunteered with the Sandwich Union Guard, which later became part of the 10th Illinois

Infantry.

“I think that it’s important to show the public what that period in history was like,” said Gerry Bliss, a re-enactor from Elk Grove Village. “There are parallels to what we’re facing today, including fighting for rights and social issues. By portraying men from the company that came from this town, we can bring the Civil War to life.”

SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man free on parole after serving 18 years in prison for murder was in DeKalb County court Friday facing charges of aggravated attempted robbery.

A DeKalb County judge set bond at $50,000 for Ricky Harmon, 40, of the 800 block of Crane Drive. He’s still in jail, and must post $5,000 to be released.

Ricky The victim told police that Harmon had Harmon come to his apartment Wednesday afternoon in the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive to buy marijuana, court documents show. He said Harmon implied he had a gun, at which point the victim fled to the roof and Harmon left the apartment.

Harmon told police that he left the apartment after an argument, and had pulled a hammer, covered in a hair net, out of a bag to escape.

DeKalb Deputy Police Chief John Petragallo said there were no injuries, and no weapon was found, including when police found Harmon on Thursday walking in the 800 block of Crane Drive.

If convicted of aggravated attempted robbery, Harmon could face three to seven years in prison.

Harmon was arrested Feb. 28, 1997, in Cook County, on charges of murder, attempted murder, aggravated vehicular hijacking with a weapon, and a previous count of possession of a controlled substance. He was found guilty on the first three counts and sentenced to 30 years in Hill Correctional Center. He was paroled Oct. 28, 2015, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.

His next court hearing is 9 a.m. May 19.

Blagojevich’s request for lighter sentence denied

CHICAGO – An appeals court in Chicago took just three days to reject a request from imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich for another sentencing hearing, agreeing his 14-year prison term for corruption was a stiff punishment but was well within the sentencing judge’s discretion.

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ unanimous Friday ruling also dismissed arguments that Judge James Zagel should have shortened the prison term in August because of Blagojevich’s good behavior mentoring fellow inmates and even putting together a band, The Jailhouse Rockers.

The defeat dashes one of the 60-year-old’s last hopes of winning his freedom anytime soon. It’s rare for rulings to be posted so quickly – an indication the judges considered this an easy decision. “We’re incredibly disappointed and sad,” Blagojevich attorney Leonard Goodman said Friday. He said he’ll have to talk to Blagojevich before deciding any next steps.

WASHINGTON – The leader of a bipartisan good-government group, Zach Wamp, headed to the White House last week to ask whether President Donald Trump’s “drain the swamp” slogan would ever be more than a throwaway campaign slogan.

One of the president’s closest aides, Steve Bannon, assured him it’s a priority.

Bannon said he “agrees with the concept that Washington is rigged,” said Wamp, a former Republican congressman. “He said he just needs to figure out what to do about it.”

Yet within 48 hours of the visit, the White House announced the end of an Obama administration practice aimed at greater transparency in government: It would no longer release the names of visitors to the executive mansion.

It was another step away from the goal of “drainage,” curbing the outsized influence of Washington powerbrokers. Then, a filing this week showed that the president raised a record $107 million for his inauguration, much of it from companies and people who do business with the government.

Trump also has brought scores of special-interest players into government. And he has yet to push any proposals to tighten campaign finance or lobbying disclosure rules.

Trump’s boldest anti-swamp move – a January executive order limiting the lobbying of outgoing officials – has already been undermined by a waiver he granted to at least one departing employee. The administration says it will never share information about when or why it makes those decisions, another change from the Obama era.

“What they do on ‘drain the swamp’ is very much to-be-determined,” Wamp said. “I think – at least I hope – my stop there last week was a reminder that these things matter.”

Bannon did not respond to requests for comment, and the White House says it considers Trump’s early bureaucracy-slimming moves to be part of its drain-the-swamp work.

At a rally last month in Louisville, Kentucky, Trump re-upped his vow: “We are going to drain the swamp of government corruption in Washington, D.C., and we are going to keep our promises, all of the promises that we made.”

Indeed, “drain the swamp” is scrawled on one of chief strategist Bannon’s white boards documenting those campaign pledges. Rep. Ken Buck, a Colorado Republican who wrote a book about the corrupting influence that fundraising has on Congress (titled, conveniently, “Drain the Swamp”), said Trump has “surrounded himself with people who want to find solutions.”

Man in sexual assault case held on bond

SYCAMORE – A 38-year-old man extradited from Utah on a charge of aggravated criminal sexual assault of a 38-year-old woman in May in Sycamore is in DeKalb County Jail on $750,000 bond.

Ivan Faunce is also charged with two counts of criminal sexual assault against the woman he met through an online dating app, records show.

The most serious offense, aggravated criminal sexual assault, is punish-

able by six to 30 years in prison.

Faunce remained in the DeKalb County Jail on Friday afternoon.

Faunce told police Ivan Faunce that he had invited the woman to his home in the 1800 block of Mulberry Lane in Sycamore, but denied attacking her, according to court documents.

He still listed his Sycamore address in court records, in which he also stated he had no assets or liabilities.

He said in court that he’d been working in Salt Lake City as a mechanic and had been selling hay.

Faunce was arrested March 29 and booked into Salt Lake City jail after a brief standoff with U.S. Marshals, during which he barricaded himself in an RV, in which a gun was later found, according to a news release from the Sycamore Police Department.

Police said Faunce and the victim met through an online dating app, then met in person later in a local business, after which she said a vio-

lent sexual assault occurred. The incident took place May 27, according to court documents.

Faunce, who appeared Friday via closed-circuit TV, sat with his feet up on a bench as he waited for his name to be called. He became incensed with Judge Phil Montgomery when he asked for clarification on whether the victim was a minor.

“Why would you ask if it’s a minor?” he asked angrily.

His public defender is expected to file a motion to reduce bond. He will next appear in court at 9 a.m. May 19.

Thumbs-down to another 911 system outage Thumbs-down: To another 911 system outage.

Although not all lines were affected, cellular phone customers using Verizon and U.S. Cellular, and some using Charter Communications, were unable to reach DeKalb County’s 911 dispatch center for much of the day Wednesday. In some cases, calls would connect to the 911 center but no one could be heard on the line, and police from DeKalb later returned the call. A Verizon spokesperson characterized it as a “small number” of customers affected and said the outage was a result of a problem with fiber-optic cables that carry data.

This was the second outage in less than a year – a problem with corrupted software in the emergency system here caused an outage in September.

We remain concerned about the reliability of this crucial utility. The public expects and depends on this system to work; it is literally a matter of life and death.

Thumbs-up: To a long-term commitment to local history. The Sycamore City Council this week approved a plan to keep the Sycamore History Museum on the Engh Farm property off North Main Street for another 30 years, clearing the way for the museum to add programs and perhaps another building in the future. Sycamore is a community with a long and rich history, and if it can be preserved and promoted – without straining the city’s budget – then it should be.

Thumbs-down: To slow payments putting the pinch on local schools. The state of Illinois owes school districts in DeKalb County more than $10 million in transportation and special education funding, local officials said. Aside from a few thousand dollars for driver’s education, local schools said they haven’t received any money for this year in categorical payments. It’s yet another symptom of the state’s shaky finances making things more difficult at the local level.

Thumbs-up: To rejecting deficit spending.

DeKalb School District 428 Board members this week decided to hold off on more than $800,000 in expenses that could have pushed next year’s budget into a deficit. The proposed spending, for improving buildings and hiring more full-time teachers, was recommended by the district’s finance committee. However, the message clearly has been sent from the public that they are fed up with high property taxes and the district is the largest single recipient of local property tax.

Board members owe it to the public to hold the line on spending if it is possible.

More bad manufacturing news for state Failing to decide how to fix our sorry state is deciding to fail.

The state of Illinois – the city of Aurora and its environs, specifically – got some bad news recently when Caterpillar announced it was closing a machine production facility there and eliminating about 800 jobs.

As bad news goes, it could have been worse.

The company will add about 500 jobs in Decatur and move 150 more jobs to North Little Rock, Arkansas.

Those who will be left jobless will receive severance pay equaling 40 hours of pay for every year at Cat. Further, Cat employees who lose their jobs at Aurora will be able to apply for other jobs within the worldwide company.

Finally, Aurora will still be the home of Caterpillar facilities that include 1,200 employees.

Nonetheless, Cat’s announcement is indisputably unwelcome. Coming on the heels of the company’s recent announcement that it’s moving its world headquarters to Chicago instead of expanding its corporate home in downtown Peoria, the trend here

is unmistakable.

For all of Cat’s deep ties to Illinois, the tide is turning. It’s looking to other states to invest and expand.

Illinois’ business climate is inhospitable, and it’s likely to remain unwelcoming to capital investment for some time. So manufacturers who are here are going elsewhere. Those who might have come under better circumstances are doing the same.

That’s why other states are gaining manufacturing jobs while Illinois is losing them.

Since 2012, Illinois has lost 10,000 manufacturing jobs, well-paying positions with generous benefits that provide good livings to middle-class families.

During the same time period, Michigan has gained 77,000 manufacturing jobs, Indiana 56,000, Ohio 40,000, Kentucky 35,700, Wisconsin, 16,300, Missouri 2,800 and Iowa 2,800.

All the states that ring Illinois are up, a couple quite substantially, while the Land of Lincoln continues to endure an erosion of its economic base that is reflected by untold economic

stress on people who need and want good jobs and a failing, flailing state government that can find hundreds of ways to spend money but lacks the revenue to support it.

Caterpillar is different from John Deere, which is different from Kraft. But Illinois’ downward direction is clear. Even in areas where it’s made gains, its growth has been slower than other states.

So why does Illinois continue to embrace failure?

Why has the Legislature gone nearly two years without passing a budget and overseeing changes that would help boost the economy?

Although it’s effectively bankrupt, the state is not legally eligible to file for bankruptcy.

Instead, it’s sinking further into financial oblivion – budget deficits, underfunded public pensions, unpaid bills.

Somehow, people hope, it will all work out in the end. But how long will that take?

Too many people and employers aren’t sticking around to find out.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Spending Saturday with Earth Day dopes Expect more craziness this weekend. Earth Day is Saturday. This year’s theme: Government must “do more” about climate change because “consequences of inaction are too high to risk.”

They make it sound so simple: 1. Man causes global warming.

2. Warming is obviously harmful.

3. Government can stop it.

Each claim is dubious or wrong.

Last weekend at a movie, I was surprised to be assaulted again by former Vice President Al Gore. In a preview, a puffy-looking Gore suddenly appeared, attacking President Donald Trump and mocking critics of his previous movie, “An Inconvenient Truth,” the deceitful documentary that spreads fear in classrooms today. Yes, teachers play it in class.

Now Gore claims “the most criticized” part of the film was his assertion that the 9/11 memorial site would flood. Then, during Hurricane Sandy, it did!

But Gore creatively misremembers his own movie.

He had claimed the World Trade Center would flood because of a permanent 20-foot sea-level rise.

Actual scientists called that nonsense. It would take hundreds of years for such a thing to possibly happen.

But since the area flooded, briefly, Gore spins that as confirmation of his exaggerations.

VIEWS John Stossel This preview was the first I learned that theaters will soon show a sequel to Gore’s film.

Google tells us that “An Inconvenient Sequel” got a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival.

Trendy Hollywood is so dumb.

At least critics who’ve watched it gave it poor reviews.

Let’s go back to points 1, 2 and 3: 1. Man’s greenhouse gases contribute to warming, but scientists don’t agree on how much. Of 117 climate models from the 1990s, 114 overpredicted warming.

2. Warming is harmful. Maybe.

But so far it’s been good: Over the past century, climates warmed, but climate-related deaths dropped. Since 1933, they fell by 98 percent. Life expectancy doubled.

Much of that is thanks to prosperity created by free markets. But some is because of warming. Cold kills more people than heat.

Carbon dioxide also is good for crop growth. Even The New York Times admits, “Plants have been growing at a rate far faster than at any other time in the last 54,000 years.”

But what if Gore is right? Maybe our greenhouse gases eventually will

cause Greenland’s ice caps to melt and flood our cities. Shouldn’t government act now? No. 3. Nothing we do today will stop global warming. The Obama regulations that Trump recently repealed, horrifying the Earth Day crowd, had a goal that amounted to a mere 1 percent reduction in global carbon dioxide. And that was just the goal.

Of course, some think any cut is better than nothing. But cuts are costly. They kill jobs, opportunity.

All to accomplish ... nothing the earth will notice.

If warming does become a problem, we’re better off if our economy is very strong when the science tells us clearly that action will make a difference.

We should be especially wary of expensive government projects, given how often alarmists were wrong in the past.

As Cato’s Pat Michaels says, “I’ve lived through eight environmental apocalypses ... overpopulation ... resource depletion ... Silent Spring ... global cooling ... acid rain ... the ozone hole ... global warming ... the next one is going to be ocean acidification.”

In the 1970s, environmentalist Paul Ehrlich won fame with his book “The Population Bomb.” Ehrlich predicted: “I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000.”

Oops.

Ehrlich now admits: “When you predict the future, you get things wrong.” But he says there’s a grain of truth in his prediction, because: “If you look closely at England, what can I tell you? They’re having all kinds of problems.”

Give me a break.

Saturday’s Earth Day nonsense will include a “March for Science.”

The media will hype it, claiming Trump’s proposed budget will poison the earth.

It won’t.

The alarmists claim they’re marching for “science,” but they’re really marching for a left-wing religion.

Instead of celebrating Earth Day on Saturday, I’ll celebrate Human Achievement Hour.

The think tank behind it, the Competitive Enterprise Institute, said Human Achievement Hour pays tribute to “our basic human right to use energy to improve everyone’s quality of life.”

I am appalled that former DeKalb Health Director Jane Lux, along with former DeKalb County Board member Michael Haines, spoke at voter forums and used scare tactics to try to persuade voters to approve the tax. One such tactic was to imply to attendees that food inspections would disappear if the tax was not approved. Sorry, not true.

The irony here is that Mr. Haines voted to expand the Cortland landfill against the wishes of the community when he sat on the County Board. This is the same facility that caused a number of Cortland schoolchildren to get sick in 2015. Mr. Haines should not be speaking on anything related to health.

It also should be noted that the county did not make the audio recordings available on its website, so I was forced to use the Freedom of Information Act to obtain them. On the recordings,

County Board committee members could be heard scheming, with the intent to delay the referendum from the November 2016 election to the April 2017 election so that fewer voters would be likely to participate.

The money spent by the group promoting the tax was outlandish. Many dollars were wasted on signs, pamphlets and other campaign literature that will end up in Mr. Haines’ expanded Cortland landfill. I cannot wait to see the final campaign numbers. The money spent could have been used for these programs the health department wanted to retain, but instead they wasted it.

If the county wants to add these programs the referendum would have paid for, it needs to cut its staff and overhead, and redirect the money appropriately and respect the public, not mock them.

To the Editor: “Our View: Respect beliefs of those against abortion” (April 19, page 11) focuses on the viewpoints of those who oppose abortion but almost completely ignores the views of those who need this care.

I talk to women in our state every day who have decided to end their pregnancy and are now struggling to afford it. A woman’s right to make her own decisions about abortion is essentially meaningless if she can’t afford the care she needs – which is why insurance, including for low-income people, should cover abortion.

Voters agree: A poll from Hart Research Associates found that 86 percent of voters nationwide agree that “however we feel about abortion, politicians should not be allowed to deny a woman’s health coverage because she

is poor.”

We should respect that a woman is the best person to make personal decisions about her health, her pregnancy, and her future.

County Board must take ‘no’ for an answer on taxes

The voters said enough, no more taxes! By a double-digit margin, DeKalb County voters soundly defeated a plan for a permanent property tax to fund optional “non-mandated” services from the DeKalb County Health Department.

Junior leads hungry relay team

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Last season, Tristan Bujarski was the only underclassman on the DeKalb boys track and field team’s state-bound 400-meter relay.

Now a junior, Bujarski returns as the Barbs’ top sprinter.

Bujarski ran the third leg on the Barbs’ relay team, which included Tony Tate, Aljuwan Smith and Zuerek Day, that finished in 14th place at the Class 3A State Championships last year. While Day also returns, DeKalb coach Tim Holt has kept Bujarski on the third leg and said the junior has responded well to the newfound responsibility of being the top sprinter.

“He’s handling it really well,” Holt said. “He’s just so good on the curve, so why move him, you know? With that relay, we just have to build a lead – Keonte (McKinnie) has done a nice job leading off – and then (Tyrese) Dyson has got to hold them off.”

Early in the season, that 400 relay team has consisted of McKinnie leading off, followed by Day, Bujarski and Dyson. At a three-team meet Tuesday at Sycamore, the group easily took first with a time of 43.89. Individually, Bujarski won the 100 with a time of 11.65 Tuesday – edging teammate Dyson (12.12) – while running directly into a strong wind. “(The wind) destroys your time really bad,” said Bujarski, who also took first in the 100 at the Ottawa ABC Invitational on April 15 with a time of 11.43. “The last meet I was at, I was fortunate enough to win the 100,

“He’s competitive,” Holt said.

“He’s aged and matured a little bit. A sophomore last year – and he ran as a freshman – so yeah, a little smarter, mature. You can see he’s getting more defined. He just has natural speed, that’s a plus.”

Bujarski said his goals are to get under 11 seconds in the 100 and be in the mid-22s in the 200. However, while he wants to qualify for the state tournament in those events, he said it’s more important to him that the 400 relay team makes it to Charleston.

NIU coach Rod Carey said that being a year into the Huskies’ system has made Sanders’ understanding better and because of that, he’s playing faster. He’s already showed his playmaker abilities this spring, causing havoc in the backfield on multiple occasions.

For Sanders, his time in the junior college ranks – which including stints at Highlands and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College – allowed him to prepare as life as a Division I player.

“Juco guys don’t want to be in juco,” Sanders said. “If you got a chance to go straight to D-I, you need to do that. If you don’t have the offers or got bad

grades, juco is always an option, too. I don’t feel like I was physically ready to go Division I and juco gave me another step and I was ready.”

Diersen described Sanders’ first year with the Huskies as if he were a freshman, learning about the school and the program. One defensive lineman who got plenty of experience as a true freshman last year was Ben LeRoy, a 6-foot-2, 280-pounder who won a state title with Wilmette Loyola his senior year in 2015 before playing eight games with the Huskies in 2016.

“He’s got a great work ethic,” Diersen said. “Ben is a sponge when it comes to learning and he’s going to outwork – it may not be pretty, but he’s going to outwork the kid across from him. ... Playing as a true freshman, it shouldn’t happen, but he was just working too hard and outworking

people that he had to play.”

Carey said he liked the way LeRoy caught on quickly, along with his physicality and motor. He finished with six tackles for the Huskies last year. For LeRoy, the fact that he saw the field so much as a true freshman was no surprise and said he felt he was ready by the second padded practice of fall camp.

“I prepared to play as a true freshman because one day Coach Diersen came to visit my high school and he said, ‘If you’re ready to play, you’re ready to play. There’s no reason to bank on a redshirt. If you can go now, you can go now,’ ” LeRoy said. “It was a different speed to the game. The first couple of practices are a lot faster than in high school. We didn’t run much tempo in high school, so right from the get-go, it was bang, bang, get your hand in the ground. Get ready to go.”

Injuries change Huskie Bowl to shortened practice

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – For the second time in four years, the Northern Illinois football team will have to greatly modify its final outing of the spring season.

The team will not participate in the traditional Huskie Bowl spring game and instead will have a shortened spring practice that involves special teams work, 7-on-7 and offensive line versus defensive line drills and periods of 11-on-11 scrimmages that will not have tackling.

“It was just some health reasons, we’ve done it in

the past, too, so we’re going to come out and get some work and still compete,” NIU coach Rod Carey said.

“I think (the players were disappointed), but they understand.”

Several of the Huskies’ key players are recovering from injuries, including senior running back Jordan Huff and senior cornerback Shawun Lurry.

NIU will still have the pomp and circumstance of the day, including the Communiversity Block Party – with food, music and activities for children – starting at noon.

The practice will begin at 2 p.m. and fans are allowed onto the field afterward for autographs.

The same injury bug hit the Huskies during the 2014 season and the intersquad scrimmage was called off in favor of a practice.

During the 2014 season, the Huskies ended up winning the Mid-American Conference Championship.

“A couple of players are kind of hurt and the outof-staters, we got family coming from a long way to see the game, but you got to modify it,” said senior defensive end Joe Sanders, who is from Georgia. “It’s kind of good, kind of bad feeling. Bittersweet. We do want to win in the upcoming season, so I understand what the coaches are doing to keep us healthy.”

DeKALB – Northern Illinois senior defensive end Joe Sanders had to play catch-up in his first season with the Huskies last year.

After coming to the team as a junior college transfer just before fall camp, Sanders is becoming a playmaker for the Huskies’ defensive line in his first spring at NIU. “I came in late last year, so I had to get the playbook real fast, but now I have a couple months under my belt and I’m having fun and I can just go. I know my plays, I know my technique,” Sanders said. “I’m not going to lie, it was kind of hard transition from juco to D-I ball. I was out shape. I wasn’t in Division I football shape, so the first couple weeks I was bad. The offense was whupping me.”

Sanders, a 6-foot-4, 259-pounder from Georgia, came to the Huskies from Highland Community College (Kansas) in June – with fall camp beginning in August. He was originally recruited by Kansas – when now-NIU defensive coordinator Kevin Kane was still with the Jayhawks. During his time at Highland, Sanders committed to Central Florida but was released and Kane, after returning to the Huskies, helped bring him to DeKalb.

In his first year with the Huskies, Sanders said he wasn’t in game shape until the game against South Florida in the second week of the season. He played in 11 games during the 2016 season, recording 16 tackles and three for a loss.

“D-linemen in juco are heavily recruited, it’s like gold,” NIU defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Brett Diersen said. “You go from hearing everything you want to hear and I don’t care where you go, reality hits.

CHICAGO — The Boston Celtics got pep talks from a past champion as well as their current superstar. Then, they put a charge in a series that was slipping from their reach.

Al Horford had 18 points and eight rebounds, Isaiah Thomas scored 16 points, and the top-seeded Celtics beat the Bulls, 104-87, Friday night after dropping the first two games of their opening-round series at home.

The Celtics pulled away after a 20-point lead shrunk to one early in the third quarter and put themselves in position to tie the series just as it was getting away from them.

Game 4 is Sunday in Chicago.

They got a recorded message from Kevin Garnett before the game. Thomas, still grieving the death of his sister, had a few things to say, too.

“To me personally, it was everything,” Jae Crowder said. “It was just a little motivation speech. (Garnett) said we looked like a team that wasn’t having fun. We looked like a team that (wasn’t) soaking in the moment. We just needed to play for one another, and play for the moment which is at hand being in the playoffs and have fun with it. He basically said put a little more KG into it.”

Hoiberg vague on Rondo’s possible return

jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – The running joke throughout this season was Fred Hoiberg gave up his medical practice last year.

The second-year coach was much more detailed when it came to injuries in his rookie campaign, enough so that the organization reportedly told him to start keeping injury updates as vague as possible.

That’s why the timetable on Rajon Rondo’s fractured right thumb is “indefinitely.’’

What Hoiberg would detail was that the injury occurred in the third quarter of Game 2, but that Rondo continued to play through it in that Bulls win, thinking it was just jammed or a mild sprain. By Thursday night, however, it wasn’t im-

proving, and an X-ray confirmed the bad news.

“It shows the toughness of Rajon Rondo to continue to fight through and battle and play pretty much the rest of that game,’’ Hoiberg said. “[Thursday] night, you could tell in talking to him that something wasn’t right. Everybody who plays this game jams fingers and thumbs all the time. But he said this one was a little different. So to get the news [Thursday] night was very tough.’’

According to Hoiberg, the cast will come off next week, and then Rondo will again go through another X-ray to see if there’s improvement.

Hoiberg did make it sound that Rondo would miss the entire Celtics series, but beyond that he did his job and was vague.

Early message: While the play of the Bulls bench throughout the early

games of the playoffs might be surprising many, don’t include the likes of Dwyane Wade in that majority.

Wade saw first-hand how prepared that group was in the first practice heading into the start of postseason play.

“That first day in practice to prepare for this series, they kicked our butt,’’ Wade said of the second unit.

“They were out there about an hour before us, preparing, getting ready.

And now you see it. We looked at each other like, ‘We’re going to be good’ because those guys are ready and are pushing us.

“We believe and trust in those guys. And we need that. We need someone to step up off the bench and make an impact.’’

Rookie Paul Zipser called it a huge practice for everybody involved.

“It was just like the intensity, you

just saw how we were going to play the next game, especially in Boston, how you’ve got to show up as a team,’’ Zipser said. “So everybody, literally everybody, it was a big-time practice and it was important for us.’’

Adjustment time: Looking to switch things up for Game 3, Boston coach Brad Stevens went to 31-yearold Gerald Green in the starting lineup, benching Amir Johnson.

Johnson had only scored seven total points through the first two games, and was destroyed on the boards, grabbing six total.

“Shooting, length and athleticism,’’ Stevens said of the reason.

It seemed to work in setting a tone, as Green finished the first quarter a plus-six in the plus/minus category, and the Celtics outscored the Bulls 33-15.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Patrick Kane slumped his locker, his body language betraying the level tone of his voice.

Like everybody else in the aftermath of the Predators’ stunning sweep of the once-mighty Blackhawks, he was trying to figure out how a 50-win season ended so suddenly, so pathetically.

“Maybe we won a couple close games that might have made us feel like we were better than we really were,” Kane said, a startling and honest self-assessment of a flawed team.

“To score three goals in four games, I mean, there’s no way you’re going to win doing that.”

And there’s no way the Hawks are going to continue to win Stanley Cups doing what they’ve been doing. The lesson from this postseason flameout is clear: The Hawks need to stop living in the past, and start looking toward the future.

It’s easy to look at two first-round exits in a row and think the Hawks’ championship window has closed. But Kane is 28, and at the top of his game.

Jonathan Toews turns 29 next week, and another long offseason without the World Cup getting in the way could work wonders. Duncan Keith is still on the best contract in the NHL. Marian Hossa had 26 goals this year at age 38.

The core isn’t what it used to be, but it’s still as good as any in the league.

And just as the Pittsburgh Penguins did in recent seasons, turning what looked like a fading one-Cup wonder into the Hawks’ successor as the best

Rizzo’s home run rallies Cubs to win

The Associated Press CINCINNATI – Anthony Rizzo tied it with a two-out, three-run homer in the ninth, and Kris Bryant hit a sacrifice fly in the 11th inning Friday night, rallying the Cubs to a 6-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

The Cubs won for the 19th time in their past 23 games against the Reds and for the 16th time in their past 20 games at Great American Ball Park.

The Cubs stranded a pair of runners in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings before breaking through in the ninth against Michael Lorenzen. Miguel Montero singled, Kyle Schwarber doubled, and Rizzo hit the Cubs’ third homer of the game.

Bryant’s sacrifice fly off Robert Stephenson (0-1) sent the Cubs to their third straight win.

Carl Edwards Jr. (1-0) retired the side in the 10th, and Wade Davis got the three outs for his fourth save in as many chances.

Tim Adleman lasted six innings in his first start this season and doubled home a pair of runs off left-hander Jon Lester, helping the Reds take a 5-2 lead.

Adleman moved into Cincinnati’s injury-depleted rotation and drove in as many runs as he allowed. He gave up solo homers by Jason Heyward and

Javier Baez in six innings.

It was a breakout game offensively for the Reds, who had managed only four hits in their previous two games and one run in 26 innings. Plus, Lester hadn’t allowed more than one run in any of his three starts this season.

Adam Duvall hit the first homer allowed by Lester in the fifth inning.

Lester gave up five runs in 52/3 innings.

TRAINER’S ROOM Cubs: Baez was hit on the back of the

left shoulder by Drew Storen’s pitch in the seventh inning but stayed in the game.

Reds: RHP Rookie Davis threw in the bullpen and “looked really good,” manager Bryan Price said. Davis has been on the DL since April 12 with a bruised right forearm.

LONDON – As get-rich-quick plans go, it wasn’t well thought out.

The man accused of bombing the bus carrying the Borussia Dortmund soccer team allegedly hoped to make millions off an expected slump in the team’s share price by using an obscure financial trade, a “put option.”

These trades are typically used by professional traders at banks or investment firms, suggesting the bomber had some experience with financial markets.

So what are vitamins, exactly? They’re nutrients we need in small quantities to maintain various metabolic functions that, when taken in total, add up to good health.

Vitamins help the body to produce energy, ward off cell damage, facilitate in the absorption and utilization of minerals, and play varying roles in the regulation of cell and tissue growth.

Vitamins must be taken in food because the body either doesn’t produce them in adequate quantities, or doesn’t produce them at all. Vitamin D is a bit of an outlier. It’s an essential nutrient that does not naturally appear in food in adequate quantities, but is produced when our skin is exposed to the ultraviolet B rays in sunlight. It also is available in fortified foods like milk, fish and mushrooms.

Take an honest look at your diet. If you find some nutritional holes, our advice is to adjust and improve your eating habits.

If you do decide to make a multivitamin part of your daily regimen, keep in mind it cannot take the place of a balanced and healthy diet. Not only do fruits, vegetables, whole grains and leafy greens contain vitamins, they also provide fiber, which is important to good health. Whole foods also contain trace nutrients and other useful compounds no pill or supplement can re-create.

Dear Doctor: Do I really need to take a multivitamin? My sisters are convinced you can’t get all the nutrients you need without one, but it seems to me that as long you’re eating right, you’re covered.

Dear Reader: Multivitamins are the most widely used supplements in the United States. It is estimated between one-third and one-half of all Americans take a multivitamin each day. As a result, your question is one that comes up often in our practices. And while we can’t offer specific advice, we can share and explain the information we give to our patients.

The short answer is for most patients, we believe if you’re eating a balanced diet, one that includes whole grains, a variety of vegetables and fruits, adequate lean protein and dairy products, there is no need for a multivitamin. However, when a patient’s diet isn’t ideal, then a multivitamin can offer insurance for the deficient vitamins and/or minerals.

Of course, there are exceptions. Pregnant women and women who are trying to become pregnant need at least 400 micrograms of folate a day, a B vitamin that helps to prevent neural tube defects. For these women, a prenatal vitamin or a daily folic acid supplement is recommended. Nursing women have unique nutritional needs that may call for supplementation. Some elderly adults whose appetites have diminished and who therefore don’t eat a balanced diet may benefit from adding a multivitamin.

Someone on a restricted diet, such as a vegan, typically needs a B12 supplement.

South can see four potential losers: one spade, one heart and two clubs. Certainly, if West has the spade king, East is sure to hold the club ace.

But if East has the trump king, there are 10 tricks via four spades, one heart and five diamonds. Declarer just has to be careful how he tries to draw trumps.

South should take the first trick (so as not to risk a club shift), cross to the board with a diamond and ... what?

Declarer should lead the spade nine, the lowest trump in the dummy that can win the trick if the finesse is working. When the nine holds, declarer runs the spade queen, plays a spade to his jack, cashes the ace of spades and trundles the diamonds for his contract.
