POLL When you hit a brick wall in life YESTERDAY’S RESULTS It was 8 a.m. Friday when we sat down to breakfast at a hotel in New Glarus, Wisconsin, where we met Kay’s Sycamore High School classmate, John Oltman, and his wife, Chris.

As we sat down, Kay fell over sideways, and as I grabbed her to put her back into the chair I sensed something was seriously wrong. She was mumbling. Chris, a retired nurse, immediately said “stroke” and I went to the front desk to call 911. Five minutes later, a police officer arrived to offer first aid, and the New Glarus Rescue Squad arrived in about 10 minutes.

Chris suggested instead of the local hospital we take her directly to the University of Wisconsin hospital, which has a specialty team for dealing with strokes. This was a wise move, as the golden hour is critical in treating a person early on.

When the ambulance arrived at the hospital, the stroke team was already on notice and rushed her into the emergency room for a CT scan. Minutes later, they told me the bad news. There was a blood clot in the brain, and a clot-busting drug would be tried.

Another scan showed that surgery using a thin wire inserted in the groin going up into the brain was advisable, a fairly new technique but one that’s been proven effective, so I signed the necessary papers as she was rushed into surgery.

The clot broke into two pieces when they were drawing it out, and one went into the area where speech and comprehension are affected. Something called “aphasia,” they told me. They managed to remove the second one, as well, but the damage was considerable.

DeKALB COUNTY LIFE Barry Schrader Her right side had been paralyzed, and she lost the ability to swallow, but as I write this three days later, she has regained the use of her right side and can swallow again. Her speech and comprehension, however, are impaired for now.

By the time you read this, she will probably already be transferred to an acute stroke rehab hospital closer to home, and the long road back to recovery will begin for both of us.

It is too early to know the outcome, but I learned some lessons to be better prepared when away from home: • Always have a list of medicines in your billfold or purse and know your spouse’s special dietary needs or allergies.

• Carry your insurance cards, names of your doctor(s) and pharmacy, and important family and close friends’ phone numbers and emails.

• Even a signed medical directive should be taken on trips. With smartphones, storing this information should be easy, but many of us don’t take the time to enter that vital data.

In my next column, I hope to share more about strokes and our situation.

TODAY’S TALKER UC Berkeley flip-flops on Coulter visit, proposes May date

BERKELEY, Calif. – University of California, Berkeley officials said Thursday they have a “grave concern” of violence on campus if Ann Coulter follows through on her vow to speak next week at the university.

Chancellor Nicholas B. Dirks instead proposed an alternate May 2 date for the conservative author, reversing a decision from a day earlier when officials canceled the event.

Coulter took to Twitter to reject the offer, saying

she will appear next Thursday as originally planned.

“I’m speaking at Berkeley on April 27th, as I was invited to do and have a contract to do,” tweeted Coulter, who was invited to speak by campus Republicans. In a separate tweet she said she’s not free May 2.

Coulter’s rejection potentially sets the stage for another political brawl at Berkeley, where violent protesters forced the cancellation of a speech by former Breitbart News editor Milo Yiannopoulos in February.

Rejuvenated youngster still facing kidney problems; fundraiser planned

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A year ago Wednesday, 18-year-old Ricky De La Cruz of DeKalb was undergoing a life-saving heart transplant.

Today, the DeKalb High School student can run, be more engaged in sports, ride roller coasters and finish a day of school without having to take naps between classes.

In recognition of her son’s progress, Dori De La Cruz invited family members and supporters, who all donned red T-shirts, to her DeKalb home Wednesday to release red balloons honoring all transplant recipients.

“I just wanted to thank the DeKalb community for all of their support and prayers,” Dori De La Cruz said.

Some of the attendees were families of children who also had heart transplants about the same time as Ricky.

Larry and Lisa Belcher of Braidwood brought their 10-year-old son, Braedan, who had a heart transplant a couple of months after Ricky because of a congenital heart defect. After the surgery, Braedan was recovering on the same floor as Ricky at the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

Since then, Braedan’s mother said her son has become much more active.

“Before, he would get very winded and tired and didn’t take an interest in anything that was athletic or could cause exertion,” Lisa Belcher said.

“Now he looks forward to doing these things with his friends.”

Also in attendance was Charlie Crum, a DHS assistant football coach who does one-on-one assistance with Ricky during school.

He helps him with day-to-day activities, behavioral problems or any other needs.

These services are offered to certain students with medical conditions.

Crum said he has worked as an assistant for students for three years, but Ricky currently is the only one he works with one-on-one.

“When I first started working with him, he got tired a lot and would nap twice a day during school, once after the first couple of periods and once after lunch,” Crum said. “All the teachers knew about his condition, so they were OK with him doing it. But since

However, Ricky still faces other medical challenges.

He has experienced kidney problems since birth and is in stage three renal failure, having been hospitalized by the condition numerous times since November. De La Cruz said her son eventually will need a kidney transplant, but he is not yet on the transplant list.

In order to raise funds for this surgery, the De La Cruz family is holding a fundraiser, Move for Ricky, at 6 p.m.

“But the good news is his heart is very strong,” Dori De La Cruz said.

“People have said that Ricky has changed their lives, and seeing him gives people hope.”

When asked how his life has

changed a year after his surgery, Ricky excitedly said that he has a girlfriend, referring to Becca Butler, 18, whom Ricky asked to prom after the

release of the balloons.

Butler also was Ricky’s prom date last year at a special prom ceremony at the Lurie hospital.

DeKalb Park District has new commissioner

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Patricia Perkins, a native of DeKalb and a Northern Illinois University retiree, said she first learned how to swim in Hopkins Park and continues to use the various parks within the community.

This love of the community was one of the reason’s she applied for the open seat on the DeKalb Park District board.

After a roughly monthlong search, the appointment of Perkins as the board’s fifth commissioner was ap-

proved without opposition during Thursday’s meeting.

After the vote, Perkins was sworn in as a board member.

“I think the park disPatricia trict enhances the qualPerkins ity of life for the city’s citizens,” she said. “This affords me an opportunity to contribute back to my hometown that I love dearly.”

Perkins replaces Bryant Irving, who stepped down from the board in

January because of health problems.

She said she is unclear whether she will also fill Bryant’s duties as board treasurer.

Having been retired for four years, Perkins said she feels as if she has time to commit to this role.

“Working at NIU, I understand organizations and organizational skills,” Perkins said. “In my last job with the university, I did campus planning and project management, so I think that maybe gives me some insight into the board.”

Perkins’ appointment required

three of the four board members’ approval. President Phil Young and Commissioners Dag Grada and Keith Nyquist all voted for her appointment.

Dean Holliday was not present.

The search process for a new commissioner began in March, where commissioners had hoped to appoint a new member by the time of the April 4 consolidated election.

Applicants to the unpaid position were recommended to have lived in DeKalb for at least a year, be willing to the serve the public and preferably have experience in an elected position.

Sycamore History Museum plans expansion on Engh Farm

SYCAMORE – Plans to expand the programs and exhibits offered at the Sycamore History Museum could include partnering with other historical organizations and constructing a new building on site.

The Sycamore City Council unanimously approved an ordinance Monday to renew the museum’s lease on the Engh Farm property for 30 years, which would allow for long-term plans of adding another building on the city’s property.

The museum first moved to the Engh Farm in 2009, when a five-year lease was established. A five-year lease extension was approved in 2014, along with a waiver of the annual rent. The lease is set to expire in 2019.

The new lease extends from May 1 until April 30, 2047, and includes the option to renew for another 30 years until 2077.

groups,” he said. “In order to do that, they would need more space, so there’s consideration about possibly constructing a new building on that property.”

The museum would own and maintain the new building, while the city would continue to provide general site maintenance such as lawn mowing and snow removal, he said.

Gregory said the building most likely would be built toward the back of the property, where a barn and silo currently stand. “[The barn] is probably marginally functional for farming operations but definitely not something that can be utilized for other operations,” he said.

“It can’t be retrofitted, and it’s in poor condition. So that building would be removed.”

The size and details of a potential new building are to be determined, but it would be used to expand the museum’s overall exhibit, program, collection and research spaces, according to the ordinance.

L. Robert “Bob” Wilson, 82 of Rock Falls died Wednesday April 19, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born on January 12, 1935, in Dixon the son of Pearl Irene Wilson. He married Ann (Schneider) Smith on September 10, 1983, in Las Vegas, NV. Bob had worked for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad and later for Union Pacific Railroad, retiring after 38 years of service. He had served as a past volunteer fireman for the city of Elburn, IL. Bob enjoyed summer months along the Rock River with family, friends and neighbors where he had fished and boated. He had served his country as a proud US Marine.

Survivors include his wife, Ann; six daughters, Kim Wilson, Peggy Palmer, Barbara (Roger) Seldal, Julie Clark, all of DeKalb, IL, Lisa Wilson of Austin, TX and Ellen Wilson of Round Rock, TX; stepchildren, Todd (Nancy) Smith of Genoa, IL, and Sharon Smith of Belvidere, IL; six grandchildren, Josh (Sarah), Jacob, and Leslie Seldal, Jeremy Wilson, Rob and Troy Clark all of DeKalb; two step-grandchildren, Steven Smith of Hampshire, IL and Daniel Smith of Elgin, IL; three great-grandchildren, Jordan Wilson, Mia and Bree Seldal.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the McDonald Funeral Home, 505 1st Avenue in Sterling.

The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Reverend Michael Hodge, pastor of Grace Free Lutheran Church in DeKalb officiating. Burial with military honors will conclude at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Dixon.

NIU hosting town hall to address Rep. Kinzinger

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Constituents of Illinois’ 16th Congressional District will have a chance to voice their concerns to U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, during a town hall meeting Friday at Northern Illinois University’s Cole Hall.

Although the congressman was invited to attend, it is unclear whether he will be present.

“Even if he doesn’t show, we’ll still have the meeting regardless,” said Sarah Moses of DeKalb, who helped organize the event. “This is still a great opportunity for people to get together to share their concerns on the district and get the message out.”

Moses said about 100 people have RSVP’d for the town hall.

About 150 people attended a similar town hall meeting held during the last congressional recess. Kinzinger did not attend.

“If people knew he was confirmed to attend, there would be a massive turnout,” Moses said.

She added that not long after the town hall was organized, another public event to be hosted by the League of Women Voters was scheduled for Saturday at Rockford College, in a similar format to that of the recent forum for Republican U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren.

DeKALB – A 40-year-old DeKalb man was arrested Thursday after attempting a robbery during a drug deal Wednesday afternoon, according to a news release from the DeKalb Police Department.

Officers responded at 2 p.m. Wednesday to a report that Ricky Harmon, of the 800 block of Crane Drive, was in an apartment in the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive, armed with a handgun.

The release states that the victim invited Harmon in, at which point he implied he had a gun and demanded money.

The victim and roommates fled and, as they did, Harmon left the scene without the victims’ property. No injuries were reported.

On Thursday, police found Harmon walking in the 800 block of Crane Drive, and further evidence led to him being charged with attempted aggravated robbery. He’s in DeKalb County Jail awaiting a bond hearing.

If convicted, he could face three to seven years in prison.

DeKALB – Verizon and U.S. Cellular cellphone customers can again get through to the DeKalb County 911 center.

An outage with the providers’ service Wednesday prevented those carriers’ customers from reaching the center, and centers in other counties.

Access was restored for Verizon and U.S. Celluar customers about 7:30 and 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release sent by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Regional agencies and the DeKalb County Emergency Telephone System Board are investigating the issue to prevent future incidents, according to a release from the DeKalb Police Department.

Charter Communications phone customers also were having problems calling 911, DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said, but his office’s release said all communications issues have been fixed.

Scott said DeKalb County’s Frontier Communications system and equipment had nothing to do with the connectivity problem.

Verizon spokesman Steve Van Dinter said a problem with the fiber-optic cables that carry data caused connectivity problems for a small number of Verizon customers in DeKalb County.

The Frontier emergency system experienced a prolonged outage in September and still was experiencing corrupted software in December.

Family-run bakery opens in Hinckley

HINCKLEY – Equipped with her mother’s coffee cake recipe and help in the kitchen from her family, Jacqueline Harrington fulfilled her lifelong dream of opening a bakery.

She opened The Harrington Family Bakery, 146 E. Lincoln Ave. in Hinckley, in mid-March after moving to the village about a year ago.

“There wasn’t a place in Hinckley where you could just go get a cup of coffee and a pastry,” Harrington said.

“You could get coffee at places, but if you wanted a cupcake, a cookie or anything, you couldn’t get it unless it was prepackaged.”

Harrington said her affinity for baking was inspired by her late mother, who baked every day.

“There was always something cooking or baking,” she said. “In our backyard, we had peach trees, apple trees and a garden, so there was always something with food going on in our house.”

Harrington said the support of her family has been instrumental in opening and running the bakery, which is how the bakery got its name.

“I own the bakery, and then my family actually comes and volunteers,” she said. “They call it playing bakery.”

The bakery offers a variety of goods, such as coffee cake made with fresh fruit, doughnuts, cookies, personal pies called “MyPies,” turnovers and biscotti.

The coffee cake is a tweak on her mother’s recipe and has proved to be a favorite among customers, she said.

The cookies also have been selling well, including Harrington’s own recipe for the “big chip” giant chocolate chip cookie.

CHICAGO – Former U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock asked a federal judge Thursday to throw out his corruption case, arguing that the charges are grounded on ambiguous House spending rules and that his prosecution undermines longstanding protections for members of Congress.

The 2016 indictment accuses the once-rising GOP star of illegally seeking reimbursement in government funds for lavish spending, including $5,000 on a chandelier for his Washington office, which he was redecorating in the style of the “Downton Abbey” TV series.

Schock’s new filing points to a host of House rules that it says are imprecise, including ones barring reimbursement for the purchase of “furniture.” The rules don’t define the word and, it says, it’s “entirely unclear whether [a chandelier] would be considered furniture.”

Lawmakers ponder proposal to legalize marijuana

CHICAGO – The head of Colorado’s Department of Revenue has spoken to Illinois legislators considering a proposal to legalize marijuana in the state.

The department’s executive director, Barbara Brohl, told lawmakers during a hearing Wednesday that she believes the legal market for marijuana is eating into the black market, funding drug abuse treatment and prevention, and providing a safer product, The Chicago Tribune reported.

Proposed legislation in Illinois would allow possession of up to an ounce of pot by people who are at least 21 years old.

Smoking in public would be prohibited, and driving under the influence would remain illegal.

SKOKIE – Police said two students accused of planning to carry out a shooting at their suburban Chicago middle school have been taken into custody.

Eastern Illinois to continue hosting track championships

BLOOMINGTON – The running, vaulting, jumping and throwing will continue at Eastern Illinois University through 2022.

The Illinois High School Association board of directors approved a recommendation this week to extend the Eastern Illinois hosting contract for the IHSA Track & Field State Final at O’Brien Stadium.

The five-year extension is for both boys and girls meets.

Eastern Illinois athletic director Tom Michael said the IHSA track championship has been “a vital part of the community” for decades. He said it’s a great way to introduce the Charleston-based school to thousands of visitors.

“The wide-ranging Indictment against Mr. Schock repeatedly trespasses on land the Constitution reserves for Congress,” they wrote, adding that the rules are “so ambiguous as to invite” arbitrary enforcement by the country’s U.S. attorneys.

Schock first garnered national attention after appearing on the cover of Men’s Health showing off his six-pack abs.

He also successfully marketed himself during six years in Congress as an unwavering fiscal conservative.

If convicted of wire fraud, Schock could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.

Aldermen want police to discuss anti-texting tools

CHICAGO – Two Chicago aldermen want the city’s police to look into using technology that would detect if motorists involved in injury accidents were texting while driving.

Chicago City Council Finance Committee Chairman Edward Burke and Transportation Committee Chairman Anthony Beale introduced the resolution Wednesday.

The so-called “textalyzer” is a device that can access a cellphone’s operating system to check whether it was being used to text or email. It has raised concerns of civil libertarians.

The aldermen want Chicago police to appear before the council “to address the use of emerging technology” in enforcing the city’s existing traffic laws and investigation of vehicle crashes.

Burke said he thinks drivers text “because they think there is little chance of ever getting caught.” He said the behavior threatens other motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

GM quits Venezuela after government seizes factory

VALENCIA, Venezuela – General Motors announced Thursday that it was shuttering its operations in Venezuela after authorities seized its factory in the country, a move that could draw the Trump administration into the escalating chaos engulfing the South American nation amid days of deadly protests.

The plant in the industrial city of Valencia was confiscated Wednesday as anti-government protesters clashed with security forces and pro-government groups in a country battered by economic troubles, including food shortages and triple-digit inflation. Three people were killed and hundreds arrested in the deadliest day of protests since the unrest began three weeks ago.

The seizure arose from an almost 20-year-old lawsuit brought by a former GM dealership in western Venezuela. The dealership had been seeking damages from GM of 476 million bolivars – about $665 million at the official exchange rate, or $115 million on the black market where many Venezuelans are forced to turn to sell their increasingly worthless currency. GM said it was notified this week that a low-level court ordered the seizure of its plant, bank accounts and other assets in the country.

Hundreds of workers desperate for information about their jobs gathered at the plant Thursday to meet with government and military officials, as well as representatives of the dealership that brought the lawsuit. The neglected factory hasn’t produced a car since 2015 but GM still has 79 dealers that employ 3,900 people in Venezuela, where for decades it was the market leader.

General Motors’ announcement came as Venezuela’s opposition moved to keep up pressure on President Nicolas Maduro, taking to the

streets again Thursday a day after the biggest anti-government demonstrations in years.

It’s not the first time the Venezuelan government has seized a foreign corporation’s facilities. Last July, the government said it would take over a factory belonging to Kimberly-Clark Corp. after the American personal care giant said it was halting manufacturing because materials weren’t available in Venezuela.

But the move against GM, the U.S.’s biggest automaker, was a much more powerful statement, and could lead to a further erosion of relations between the two countries.

“This is a test case for Trump,” said Raul Gallegos, a Bogota-based analyst at Control Risks consultancy. “His response to a rogue nation taking over the assets of a brand name U.S. company will be indicative of the road it wants to take with Venezuela.”

The State Department said Thursday it was reviewing details of the GM case but called on authorities to act swiftly and transparently to resolve the dispute.

“A fair, predictable and transparent judicial system is critical to implementing the essential economic reforms critical to restoring growth and addressing the needs of the Venezuelan people,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.

Later Thursday, Maduro said he had called for an investigation into cellphone operator Movistar for allegedly being part of the “coup-minded march” organized by adversaries of his government. He said the subsidiary of Spain’s Telefonica “sent millions of messages to users every two hours” in support of Wednesday’s protests.

Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets again Thursday to demand elections and denounce what they consider an increasingly dictatorial government. They were met by a curtain of tear gas and rubber bullets as they tried to march to downtown Caracas.

Trump right about privacy On one issue, at least, President Donald Trump has united the country: More than 70 percent of the public – across political parties – oppose a bill he signed that rolls back rules protecting online privacy. Unfortunately, it’s an issue on which Trump and the Republican Congress happen to be mostly right.

The rules in question, which hadn’t yet come into effect, would have required broadband providers to ask customers’ permission before collecting personal data for use in selling ads. That sounds sensible. In reality, it most likely would have raised prices for consumers without doing much to protect privacy.

To begin with, it’s an error to think that broadband carriers have a uniquely intrusive view of their customers’ habits. Web companies such as Facebook often collect much more information about their users, yet the privacy rules didn’t apply to them. Also, the growing use of encryption – such as the HTTPS protocol – means that much of the information flowing through a broadband company’s pipes remains private. Anyway, individually identifiable customer information is broadly protected by law. Broadband carriers aren’t selling personalized browsing histories; they’re selling anonymous packs of data.

It’s pretty boring, really.

A different worry is that some carriers have a dominant market share, and their customers have no alternative if they disagree with a privacy policy. That’s a reasonable concern.

But if broadband suppliers can no longer profit from customer data – a growing revenue stream in recent years – they’ll be much more likely to raise prices for standard services. In effect, the rules in question regarded privacy as more important than cheaper service. Many consumers may agree, but the choice should be theirs.

When asked if they’re concerned about online privacy, consumers almost invariably say yes. But the vast popularity of services that collect their data and use it to sell ads – Google, Facebook and so on – suggests otherwise. Evidently users don’t always understand the trade-offs they’re making. The services are free, the privacy policies are confusing, and the data collection unfolds so smoothly that few people notice it.

The odd result is that the public happily supports this arrangement, while approving of regulation that would probably kill it.

The way to resolve this dilemma is to put a price on personal information, so that customers can choose more deliberately. AT&T tried this approach starting in 2013, allowing customers to opt out of certain kinds of data collection for $30 a month. For its trouble, the company was ridiculed by activists, condemned by politicians and eventually gave up.

Actually, it was on the right track. Research suggests that people will pay for enhanced privacy protections, provided they trust that they’re getting a good deal. Letting them do so might give broadband companies a new source of revenue while reducing the anxiety of their customers. It could enable more low-income people to get online. Perhaps most important, it would bring some much-needed transparency to the internet economy. And who could be opposed to that?

Prince Harry a role model for mental health

Britain’s Prince Harry did himself a world of good by seeking professional help for psychological problems stemming from the 1997 death of his mother, Princess Diana. He did the world a favor by talking publicly about his struggles – a step that may help people on both sides of the Atlantic come to a better understanding of mental illness and encourage those who need help to seek it.

Harry told his story Sunday in a podcast on the website of The Telegraph, Britain’s leading broadsheet.

In an interview lasting nearly 30 minutes, he spoke of the rage he felt for years after his mother’s tragic death in a crash in a Paris traffic tunnel and his struggle to understand his feelings. “I just didn’t know what was wrong with me,” he said.

The prince was 12 at the time of his mother’s death, which came about a year after Diana’s ugly divorce from Prince Charles. It was followed by years of speculation about whether the fatal crash – which also killed her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, and their driver, Henri Paul – was anything more sinister than an accident.

Harry said he tried to cope by “shutting down all of my emotions for the last 20 years.”

Despite the “total chaos” he sometimes felt and

his fear of imminent breakdowns, he said, “I’ve spent most of my life saying I’m fine.”

When he finally did start talking about his mother, the 32-year-old said, “all of this grief that I have never processed started to come to the forefront.” With the encouragement of his brother, Prince William, he sought professional help about four years ago.

Harry was the first guest on a 10-episode podcast, “Mad World,” that will explore mental illness through the eyes of prominent people.

The interview showed a different side of a royal with a party-boy reputation. If Harry can struggle with mental illness, everyone else can, too. There is no shame in seeking treatment, and relatives should do as William did in encouraging a loved one to seek professional help.

Last year, Harry, William and Williams’ wife, Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, founded Heads Together, a charity dedicated to addressing the stigma of mental illness, and Harry hinted at his troubles.

Then again, Diana spent her life in the trenches, leveraging her celebrity for various causes, and she was candid about her own bulimia, depression and alienation from Charles’ family. Harry may be very much his mother’s son.

The real factor in O’Reilly’s ouster

Bill O’Reilly is finally out at Fox. But let’s not kid ourselves about the reason.

Last summer, 21st Century Fox and the Murdoch family that controls it forced out Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes for sexual harassment. Soon after, the company settled two sexual harassment complaints against O’Reilly and extended his contract.

O’Reilly’s ouster came about only after The New York Times revealed earlier this month that he had reached settlements totaling $13 million with five women who had accused him of sexual harassment or other inappropriate behavior.

Even then, the Times story alone was not enough to bring O’Reilly down. That came only after more than 50 advertisers had abandoned his show on the Fox News Channel.

Mind you, they didn’t abandon the channel, which has covered for O’Reilly all these years. They just stopped buying ad time in his time slot.

The boycott was apparently enough of a hit, financially speaking. This is not a victory for women. This is a story about the power of the bottom line.

We need to look no further than the Oval Office to know that being an admitted sexual predator is not a guaranteed

“I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it.

You can do anything – grab them by the p----. You can do anything.”

A reader’s question, after I included that quote from Trump in a column two weeks ago: “When are you going to stop writing that about our president?”

My response: When he’s no longer our president.

President Donald Trump is the most powerful man in the world, and he got away with it. Think of the example he sets for any boy or man in America tempted to believe it’s OK to take whom you want when you want her.

I heard the news of O’Reilly’s dismissal just minutes after finishing up a day of teaching journalism at Kent State, where

so many young women have shared personal stories about rape or sexual harassment. Their experiences sound so similar to those of my generation of women. So many of us believed back then that it would be different by now.

So many of us were wrong.

As one young rape survivor said to me the day after the election, “My country just told me that what happened to me doesn’t matter.”

If there is a sign of hope after the election of Trump, it’s the mobilization of people who were previously content to leave the activism to somebody else.

This was evident in the growing volume of public calls for O’Reilly’s firing. It is also manifested in the ways women of all ages are sharing their stories.

Erin Zaranec is one of those women.

She is a student at Kent State, which is how I first got to know her as a smart and outgoing young woman with a seemingly endless supply of cheer. What I didn’t know, what most people who thought they knew her didn’t know, was that she is a rape survivor.

It took the election for her to break her silence, in the most public of ways.

Figuring the administration misunderstood what “boujee” meant, Cimino challenged the school’s ultimatum. He explained the term and added that this was just a regular sports tournament with a punny name. Otherwise it had nothing to do with the content of a rap song, in case that was the concern.

But Gerker ceded no ground, reiterating that the fraternity was “appropriating culture,” and added that in the interim he had received “multiple complaints” about the event title.

“I am awaiting a response from some folks on how they want to move forward with their complaints,” he wrote.

Still puzzled, the fraternity asked whether they could see the complaints lodged against them, but they never heard back. With time running short, they canceled the event and posted a Go-

FundMe page instead.

I reached out to the school to ask for clarification.

A spokeswoman sent a statement about how the “sequence of events did not go according to our normal process for working with student organizations.”

She said the administration should not have prohibited the fundraiser and that it usually focuses on “coaching” students about how to proceed when an event “could have a negative impact and unintended consequences on campus.”

But I never got an answer to what was so objectionable about the event title in the first place.

Neither did the students. In a meeting Thursday, another administrator apologized to Cimino for not following protocol and pledged to help promote a future event for the veterans’ group. Still no explanation of the “cultural appropriation” accusations beyond something like “we thought it could be controversial.”

Schools were once charged with educating, challenging and setting an example for their wards. Today’s pupils must settle for controversy-prevention empowerment instead.

DAILY CHRONICLE SYCAMORE – At a recent ceremony at the Sycamore Elks Lodge #1392, Lisa Hepker and Megan McConnaughy, both of Sycamore, were awarded the lodge’s two most prestigious individual awards, the Elk Of The Year Award and the Elks Distinguished Citizenship Award, respectively.

McConnaughay, an 8th-grader, started, “Pumpkins for Punkins,” a fundraising effort in which she and her family grows, and sells, pumpkins and donates the money raised to children in need each year. Last year, she raised $1,500 and donated the money to Goodfellows to assist them to purchase clothes, winter coats and shoes for

children from families in the area with limited resources. The gifts are then wrapped and delivered by volunteers the morning of December 24th each year.

The annual Sue Lyon Book Sale, sponsored by The Federated Church in Sycamore, once again is asking for donations of books. Used books, leftover books from garage sales, children’s books or books you just never got around to reading can be donated in anticipation of the Book Sale coming up on June 15 through 17.

The church does not accept dictionaries, textbooks, encyclopedias or large quantities of discarded library books, as these do not sell. All donated books should be clean and in good resale condition. Children’s books are welcome and can help young readers purchase their very own books. Books can be delivered to Blackhawk Moving and Storage, 340 South Ave. in Sycamore, to await the sale.

In 1995, Sue Lyon started a used book sale to raise money for the addition to the Sycamore Public Library.

After Sue’s death in 2004, her family continued the effort in her memory.

In recent years, Federated Church has taken over running the sale as a fundraiser for their ongoing ministries.

Hudspeth earns Eagle award

DAILY CHRONICLE Randy Hudspeth of Boy Scout Troop 4 recently was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest award achievable in Boy Scouts. Randy is the son of Mike and Noreen Hudspeth of DeKalb.

Hudspeth began Scouting with Cub Scout Pack 131. There, he participated in many camping trips which allowed him to develop his Scout skills. He earned the Arrow of Light, the highest rank in Cub Scouting, while in Pack 131.

Hudspeth joined Boy Scout Troop 18 in Sycamore. Some of his favorite campouts included Camp Freeland Leslie, canoeing on the Kishwaukee River, Klondike Derbies and archery campouts at the Sycamore Sportsman’s Club. He has worked to help others by participating in tornado cleanup efforts in Washington, Illinois, and Rochelle and he helped with Feed My Starving Children. While in Scouting, Hudspeth held leadership positions of senior patrol leader and assistant junior Scout master.

In addition to Scouting, Hudspeth has been a member of FFA, where he has held leadership positions in the group. He played football for the DeKalb High School and he also has worked.

For his Eagle Project, Hudspeth wanted to help animals in need and help an organization that needed some help. He built a new cat facility for the Tails Humane Society. His project included new enrichment ledges and resting areas for the cats in the Kitty Korner.

Hudspeth is a senior at DeKalb High School. He plans to attend Southern Illinois University where he will major in agriculture.

KC hosts veterinary assistant pinning

Kishwaukee College hosted a pinning ceremony for students who completed the veterinary assistant program. The evening included speakers Melissa Gallagher, coordinator of Short-Term Training Programs for Kishwaukee College; and Coral Ware, program instructor and certified vet tech at Bethany Hospital. Students were pinned in the tradition of health-care professionals. Palm fronds were blessed by the Rev. James Clement on Palm Sunday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Sycamore. The church later gathers the fronds and makes them into crosses. The remaining palms then are burned, and the ashes are used the following year on Ash Wednesday. Kish College Collision Repair selected as Top 20 program DAILY CHRONICLE The Kishwaukee College Collision Repair Technology Program was selected as one of the Top 20 finalists in the Tomorrow’s Tech 2016 School of the Year, sponsored by O’Reilly Auto Parts and WIX Filters.

“There were 60 different schools nominated so to be chosen to be in the Top 20 was an honor and reflects the quality of our program,” Greg Brink, CRT faculty, said in a news release.

“Tomorrow’s Tech shares O’Reilly Auto parts and WIX Filter’s support to recognize automotive schools and highlight the training of these promising auto repairers, collision specialists and heavy-duty service personnel,” Jennifer Clements, editor of Tomorrow’s Tech, a Babcox Media publication for automotive students, said in the news release. “We are continually impressed by the caliber of training these schools are providing.”

The Top 20 Schools were selected among four regions in the U.S.:

Northeast, South, Midwest and West.

A winner is chosen from among nominated schools in each region resulting in four national finalists.

Kishwaukee College was one of five schools selected in the Midwest Region. Three of the five were Illinois programs: Kishwaukee, Joliet Junior College and Southern Illinois University – Carbondale. The SIU-Carbondale was selected the top school in the Midwest region and advanced to the Final competition. The overall winner was Ranken Technical College in St. Louis which represented Region 2 – the South.

The Barbs scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, including an RBI single by Levine, and Warner scored on a wild pitch to stun rival Sycamore, 5-4, on a windy Thursday night at Mary M. Bell Field at Northern Illinois University.

“I wasn’t nervous [during the at-bat in the seventh] – I don’t know why, I usually am,” Levine said. “I had been hitting good and I’m confident in myself.”

Levine had a monster night in her first rivalry game at NIU, going 3 for 3 with a home run, three RBIs and a walk. With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh, she hit an RBI single to right-center field to tie the game at 4, and Warner was rounding third base before DeKalb coach Jeff Davis held her up.

In the next at-bat, with Payton Montgomery up, a pitch by Sycamore starter Faith Reynolds was high and went to the backstop and Warner charged home for the game-winning run.

“As soon as I saw it tip off her glove, I was like, ‘I’m going,’ ” Warner said.

“I’m fast, but I’m not that fast. I trusted myself and I just went.”

The Barbs threatened in the bottom of the sixth, getting runners on second and third with one out while trailing 4-2, but Reynolds forced Torrie Newport to line out and got Jenna Levine to ground out to second.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Barbs got an excellent at-bat from No. 9 hitter JC Longville to start the inning. After fouling off four consecutive full-count pitches, she drew a leadoff walk and eventually reached third on a single by Mackenzie Riggs to set up runners on first and third and no out.

DeKalb’s Erin Karasewski laid down a bunt to Reynolds and Longeville scored before the throw could catch her at the plate. Three batters later, Levine tied it with her RBI single.

“We called a play there with Erin at the plate with runners on first and third and we executed it well,” Davis said. “That’s exactly how it should happen. It adds pressure to their defense and it went in our favor and Rylee came up with another big hit.”

about what’s going on, and losing the team is a blow for the NIB 12.

“I’d hate to see Morris go,” Goff said. “I like Jeff, and I like the competition they bring. Their softball team was No. 1 in the state for a little while earlier this season, their football team is always good. It’s tough to find football games, and that’s what it will probably come down to.”

Like Carrick, Kearfott said he feels that Morris may not be back when the 2018-19 school year begins.

“Obviously, it’s been a rumor for a while, but once Morris got the initial invitation they were very up front with us in letting us know what’s going on with the process,” Kearfott said. “All signs probably point to they’re leaving. We need to look at options and avenues so we can grow and be a 10-team conference. I’ve been in a conference with an odd number, and it’s hard to schedule competitions with an odd number of teams.”

Carrick said there’s no plan in place now. Among the options are adding a team to replace Morris, or even adding three more to get back to 12. One more team can leave the conference to get down to eight teams, or the conference can stay at nine.

There’s also the possibility that the conference could dissolve or merge with another.

Kearfott said that whatever ends up happening, one of the priorities is keep the NIB 12 together – although everything has to be on the table.

“I told the coaches and my administration that we need to be open-minded to all options,” Kearfott said. “Our conference will be meeting in the first week of May, and I’m sure that’s going to be the discussion at our AD meetings. But we need to keep all options on the table, whether that’s adding one team, or three, or one of us leaving.

“There’s also options of schools leaving for other conferences or multiple conferences joining and combining. We need to start exploring options, and I’m at least keeping an open mind and keeping in mind what’s best for our school and out athletic programs, and hope we can keep the conference together and not deal with the scheduling issue that comes with an odd number of teams.”

Morris’ Johnson and the administration of the school told the NIB 12 of their intentions about two weeks ago, Carrick said. Morris administrators have stressed that nothing is final yet, and in fact, the process is still in the early stages and just exploratory at this point.

“It’s definitely still in the infant stages,” Morris principal Kelly Hussey said. “We got the invitation and

The I-8 is looking for a team to replace Seneca, which will join the Sangamon Conference for football and wrestling, and the Tri-County Conference for all other sports.

With Morris potentially leaving the Northern Illinois Big 12, the athletic directors of the three local schools in the conference are already starting to think about what the league may do.

Sycamore, DeKalb and Kaneland would be affected by Morris leaving for the Interstate Eight – which is still in its early stages. Barbs athletic director Nic Kearfott said he’s told his coaches and administration to keep an open mind about what possibilities exist, while Knights athletic director Peter Goff said he’s taking a wait-andsee approach.

“My gut feeling is that Morris is going to take a serious look at the I-8,” Sycamore Athletic Director Chauncey Carrick said. “If they got a formal invitation, I would be surprised if they did not go. But that’s just my thought.”

The NIB 12 is split into two divisions – DeKalb, Sycamore, Kaneland, Morris and Yorkville in the east, and Geneseo, Ottawa, LaSalle-Peru, Sterling and Rochelle in the west. For football, the teams play each team in their division and two crossover games.

The conference originally lived up to its name and had 12 teams, but Streator left for the I-8 before the 2014 season, which is when Dixon left for the Big Northern Conference.

Morris leaving would reduce the number of teams in the conference to nine, making scheduling even more difficult. Teams have had trouble scheduling Week 3 games – Sycamore had to play a team from Gary, Indiana last year and didn’t finalize their 2017 schedule until a few weeks ago. Needing to a fill a late-season slot in the schedule with a nonconference would be even more difficult.

Kearfott was part of a conference with an odd number of teams when he was at Woodstock North. Johnsburg left the Fox Valley Conference for the Big Northern Conference, leaving the Fox Valley with an odd number of teams, something he said made things very difficult. Kearfott said scheduling was troublesome when that happened, and Carrick said avoiding a conference with an odd number of teams is very important.

“In my opinion, the No. 1 priority is finding an even number,” Carrick said. “An odd number makes life miserable. So it’s a matter of one, finding an even number, and two, looking to expand. I don’t think we’re looking to lower the number.”

Erickson’s first NIB 12 start ends with road victory

Apparently, she can finish what she starts, too.

The Knights’ freshman lefty was big Thursday. Erickson went the distance on a three-hitter, striking out eight, and Kaneland scratched across a run in the seventh to edge host Yorkville 2-1 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East.

Erickson, making her first conference start, retired the last 15 batters she faced. She was nearly flawless after allowing two singles to start the game and a first-inning run.

“We’ve been really careful in the situations we’ve put her in just to build her confidence,” Kaneland coach Mike Kuefler said. “She’s thrown real well for us the last several weeks coming in a closing situation. We felt she earned the start. We’re excited about her as a freshman.”

The winds swirled throughout, but

Erickson was hardly fazed. In fact, it might have helped her screwball darting down and away to right-handed batters.

“The wind was helping it a little bit, pushing it out,” Erickson said.

“She’s not a real tall kid,” Kuefler said, “but she can spin it.”

Kaneland (12-5-1 overall, 5-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) tied it 1-1 in the third inning on Morgan Weber’s solo homer to left.

Lauren Callahan reached on an error to lead off the top of the seventh, and with one out Weber and Donny Sommesi both singled with two strikes to load the bases. Lexi Abruzzo brought in the go-ahead run with a groundout.

It was Kaneland’s second one-run win over Yorkville (11-6, 2-3), both wins coming on the Knights’ last atbat.

Mereness’ first hit of the year goes for a home run

MORRIS – Austin Mereness couldn’t have picked a better time for his first hit of the season.

In fact, the first one worked out so well for the Sycamore baseball team that he did it again.

Mereness hit a pair of home runs Thursday and finished with five RBIs to help lead the Spartans to a 10-7 win over Morris in Northern Illinois Big 12 East action.

After Danny Borgstrom gave Morris a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a solo homer, Mereness, hitting eighth in the Sycamore lineup, came up with two runners on and two outs in the top of the second. He got a pitch to his liking and drove it over the fence in right to give the Spartans (11-5, 3-3) a 3-1 lead.

Later, after Morris tied the game at 4, Mereness delivered the big blow in a five-run sixth inning for Sycamore, blasting a two-run homer that was a near carbon copy of the first one and put the Spartans ahead, 9-4.

Sycamore tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh, then held off a Morris rally in the bottom half in which the team scored three times and had the tying run at the plate when the game ended.

“No lead is ever safe in this park,” Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said. “Not with the wind blowing out the way it was today. It was nice to see Austin come up big. Those were his first two hits of the year. He had been battling back from some injuries and had a couple of better at-bats in our last game, so it was good to see him get some good contact today.”

In final hours, Hernandez thought of family

BOSTON – Family, not football, dominated Aaron Hernandez’s final hours as a lifer in prison.

As the hour of his death approached, the former NFL star chatted on the phone with his longtime fiancee, Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez.

Authorities said the pair stayed on the phone until the 8 p.m. lockdown at the maximum-security prison where he

was serving a life sentence for murder.

Alone in his cell, the ex-New England Patriots tight end scribbled three notes. He laid them carefully next to a Bible.

Then he turned his bedsheet into a noose and hanged himself.

Those cryptic details emerged Thursday as authorities ruled Hernandez’s death a suicide and turned his body over to a funeral home so his family could lay him to rest.

Investigators wouldn’t say what Hernandez’s handwritten notes said.

But they said they were satisfied he died at his own hand, and they said his brain would be donated to sports concussion researchers, ending a brief public dispute over its custody.

Authorities said the medical examiner had ruled Hernandez’s cause of death was asphyxia by hanging and investigators had found the notes and Bible in Hernandez’s cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center.

STERLING — Their overall record may not be perfect, but the Sycamore girls soccer team made sure to put in a perfect performance before postseason seeds come out.

Perfection is what the Spartans put forth in a Northern Illinois Big 12 game against Sterling at Roscoe Eades Stadium in a 6-0 win.

Sterling (10-6-1, 3-2 NIB-12) didn’t attempt a single shot, and only once got within 10 yards of the Spartan net. Meanwhile, the Spartans (8-0-3, 3-0) had little trouble at all – from forwards to defenders.

“All parts of the field – there’s no one that should be left out of the fact that this was an 11-person effort on the field,” Sycamore coach David Lichamer said. “We controlled the ball, we controlled the game play, our passing was spot-on, our 50-50s, our touches, everything was just stellar today.”

Spartans sophomore Saydie Holland scored a hat trick in her quickest time yet, finding several gaps on the Golden Warrior defense. She had goals in the sixth, 10th, and 22nd minutes to get off to a 3-0 lead. Jenna Lewey, Taylor Meier, and Jessica Morreale had assists on those goals.

Of Sycamore’s 13 first-half shots, 12 of them were on-target.

“One of our biggest struggles has been starting the game strong,” Holland said. “We all wanted to come out and be strong. We were able to string balls through, and that was really the first time all season we’ve been able to do that.”

Cali Carl added a 37-yard blast that dropped in near the crossbar with 31:01 gone for a 4-0 lead, and Kierah Meier ended the half with a deflection off her hip from 3 yards out for a 5-0 lead at half.

Taylor Meier capped the scoring with an unassisted 13-yard blast.

“We really wanted to have a strong win going into the state seeding,” Holland said. “We’re really happy with the way the score turned out.”

Sycamore is back in action today at the Freeport Invitational, where they’ll play Rockford Auburn at 4 p.m.

Sectional seeds will be revealed Thursday, with teams such as undefeated Dixon (7-0), Kaneland, and Burlington Central all vying for the top spot in the B-side of the Hampshire Sectional.

“We need to continue this level of game play,” Lichamer said. “This was an important game for us in terms of postseason ramifications.”

Despite rough first month, Bears may still get to 7-9 My immediate reaction after the NFL released the Bears 2017 regular season schedule was, “Wow, what exactly did they do to deserve this?”

First, my annual reminder that calculating the difficulty of any schedule in April is folly with the knowledge that in the NFL teams go from worst to first and vice versa as often as some folks change their underwear.

But that said, the murder’s row the schedule-makers have gifted the Bears with this September will tell us very quickly exactly what the likelihood is the Bears can be significantly improved this season.

Opening at home against the Falcons, traveling to Tampa Bay and then coming back home to face the Steelers, all at noon Sunday, and then going to Green Bay on Thursday night, the Bears will almost certainly be a touchdown or more underdog in each of their first four games.

The Bears could be much improved and still go 0-4, effectively ending their season before it really gets going.

VIEWS Hub Arkush The good news is, the only 2016 playoff teams the Bears will see the rest of the way will be a rematch with the Pack at home Nov. 12, and their two games against Detroit, and there is no week a team would rather have its bye than Week 9 – right smack dab in the middle of the season – and the Bears have drawn that straw this year.

The second quarter of the season is no walk in the park but does offer a lot more hope, with Week 5 and Week 7 home games against Minnesota and Carolina, and Week 6 and Week 8 trips to Baltimore and New Orleans.

A 4-4 start is not out of the realm of possibilities, but 1-7 or 2-6 may seem more likely.

Continued from page 22 The Bears are set up for a strong second half facing clubs with a combined 5275-1 record last year, and their rematch with the Packers and two meetings with the Lions will offer the only 2016 opponents with winning records.

They also get a break not traveling after their Oct. 29 game in New Orleans for almost a month, with the home rematch with Green Bay and the first Lions game at home before they go to Philadelphia on Nov. 26.

The next Sunday, the Bears will get a visit from the 49ers exactly 364 days after the last time they came to town, when the Bears played their best game of 2016, a 26-6 win.

The last quarter of the season will send the Bears back on the road quite a bit, as they travel to Cincinnati and Detroit, host the Browns on Christmas Eve and then finish in Minnesota for the second season in a row.

It should surprise no one after a 3-13 campaign that the Bears will work in prime time only three times – the Thursday night in Green Bay, at home on Monday night against the Vikings and a 3:30 Saturday start in that second

Lions game.

With all that as the particulars, we can offer a best guess as to what it all means.

The only teams on the schedule worse than the Bears last year were Cleveland and San Francisco, and both appear unlikely to leapfrog the Bears this year.

I actually expect the Bears to be much improved in 2017, but with the draft still a week off, you’re going to have to give me a few months to build my defense of that claim.

Beyond that, it’s reasonable to assume the Falcons, Steelers and Packers are playoff teams again, and the Bucs and Ravens look ready to make another run.

The Panthers and Eagles look likely to be improved, while the Vikings, Saints, Lions and Bengals don’t feel all that scary.

This will change a number of times over the next four months as the Bears 13 opponents evolve along with them, but for now 7-9 seems possible.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Cut through all the clichés and mind-games, all the talk of pressure and momentum, and Thursday night’s Game 4 came down to one simple fact: The Blackhawks needed a win. To salvage their season. To salvage some hope. To salvage some dignity.

“There’s nothing but desperation now,” Brian Campbell said before the game. “That’s all we have right now, is to be as desperate as possible.”

And they were. Joel Quenneville threw everything he had at the Hawks’ myriad problems. He put Artemi Panarin, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane together to spark some offense. He put Tanner Kero on a line with Artem Anisimov and Marian Hossa to cover Anisimov’s disastrous faceoff performance. He double-shifted Kane early and often in search of a goal. He dressed seven defensemen to mask his aging blue line’s deficiencies.

None if it mattered in a season-ending 4-1 loss. Not against these Nashville Predators, who suddenly looked like the preseason Stanley Cup contenders they were expected to be, while the Hawks suddenly looked like a worn-out team whose championship window is closing far sooner than expected.

Fifty wins in the regular season.

Three goals in the playoffs.

The Predators were everything the Hawks have been during their near-decade of dominance – fast and deep, skilled on offense and structured on defense, mentally tough and rock-solid in goal. The Hawks, meanwhile, were ragged and a step slow, with poor puck management on the ice and questionable roster management on the bench.

There were flashes of the old Hawks, the unflappable Hawks, the dangerous Hawks – particularly after Roman Josi’s goal midway through the second period broke a scoreless tie – but as was the case all series, they couldn’t sustain it.

Always too little, too late.

The first sweep of the Hawks since 1993 was a total team failure In 13 periods of hockey, more than 256 minutes of game play, the Hawks mustered just three goals. After not scoring last postseason, Jonathan Toews had one goal, late in Game 4. Patrick Kane had one goal for the second straight postseason.

Exploiting mismatches key to 2-0 lead

sports@daily-chronicle.com CHICAGO – Boston all-everything point guard Isaiah Thomas isn’t about to have a growth spurt before Friday’s Game 3.

In all likelihood 5-foot-9 – and that’s measuring him on a good day – is still going to remain 5-foot-9.

On the other side, Bulls all-purpose All-Star Jimmy Butler isn’t about to shrink, and center Robin Lopez sounded like a guy who has no plans to lighten up on the rebounding anytime soon.

The mismatches for Boston are the mismatches, and they won’t be magically changing for a team that’s down 2-0 in the best-of-seven first-round playoff series.

It was a flawed seed atop the Eastern Conference when this series began, and those flaws will continue to be exposed.

Dwyane Wade said, however, that what has to be guarded against is the Celtics starting to open up a book on the Bulls’ flaws.

“There’s flaws with them; there’s flaws with us,” Wade said Thursday.

“Each game is different. We don’t know how the ball is going to bounce.

The ball may never bounce to Robin, it may bounce over his head. We understand what we have, and we understand what our capabilities are, but we also understand that we’re playing a tough team.

“We’re playing a very intelligent coach and staff that’s going to make adjustments, and it’s just about making them ourselves.”

In Wade’s opinion, that’s what the early part of this series has been about.

While Boston has come out looking to jab and get a feel of their opponent, the Bulls are one step ahead.

Then when the Celtics have made the adjustment, the Bulls already have it countered.

Boston coach Brad Stevens is playing checkers, and Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg is playing chess.

“I thought we did a great job in Game 2 of making those adjustments, and that’s win or lose right there,” Wade said.

Cubs look for ‘D-peat’

bmiles@dailyherald.com Of the many T-shirts in fashion these days around the Cubs clubhouse is one that reads “D-peat.”

It reflects manager Joe Maddon’s assertion that if the Cubs play good defense, as they did last year, they have a chance to repeat as world champions.

Defense is an obsession with Maddon. In an age when everybody digs the longball and starting pitching sets the tone, Maddon gets just as excited about a good play in the field.

But there’s more. The Cubs play an aggressive style of defense. Their catchers throw behind runners at first base. Maddon went with a five-man infield to try to choke off the winning run. A wild pitch made it moot.

On bunt plays, Maddon has had Anthony Rizzo trade his first baseman’s glove for a fielder’s glove and move closer to second base, with the second baseman moving to first. Rizzo is not afraid to charge in from that spot.

At other times, Maddon has Javier Baez charging in from his second base

position to field the ball.

What the Cubs have done with all this is turn their defense into a weapon.

But as Maddon pointed out, to pull off plays such as having Baez come charging in with so much going on around him takes a special player.

“He’s fearless,” the manager said.

“A lot of guys would not be that comfortable that close to the hitter. Rizz is the same way. Part of it is the fact that either guy is fearless in regard to getting that close to the hitter. They [the opposition] try to do the slash [bunt].

That’s what you’re going to do. You’re either going to bunt it or try to do that.

“If you get at least the one out, you’re happy with it, and the runner did not advance. There’s going to come the time when they’re going to do that (hit it past the infield) and the ball’s going to go over our guy’s head and going to go into right field. It’s going to work on the other side. I get that.”

Of course, in right field is the strong arm and steady presence of Jason Heyward, against whom base runners try for the extra bag at their own risk.

“Who can make the best adjustments the quickest, the fastest? We were able to do that in Game 2, and now in Game 3, let’s see what they come with, and let’s see if we can counteract it to the point where we can win, because the ball bounces in so many different ways.”

The good news for the Bulls is they don’t consider themselves a typical No. 8 seed.

Not with Wade and his three championships, Rajon Rondo and his one ring, and then a three-time All-Star in Butler, who can arguably be put in the top five of the league’s most dangerous two-way players.

Is it the “Big Three” of Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh who Wade played with down on South Beach?

Absolutely not. But it’s certainly more threatening than Boston’s “Big One.” “Our (regular-season) record was our record, but we didn’t feel the separation was that great that we were a typical 1 vs. 8 team,” Wade said.

That’s a hard lesson the Celtics have been feeling very quickly in this series.

Gabapentin causes much more drowsiness compared to pregabalin, so many of my patients who have difficulty sleeping at night because of postherpetic neuralgia do well with it. However, because people with symptoms that also occur during the day often can’t tolerate the sedating effects of gabapentin, I switch many of these patients to pregabalin; although this drug can cause drowsiness, it is better tolerated. The anti-seizure drug valproic acid also can significantly decrease pain.

Capsaicin, the active component of chili peppers, is known for irritating the sensory nerves, but perhaps remarkably, can lead to pain relief when used in cream form for those with postherpetic neuralgia. Note that you must apply capsaicin multiple times a day, and for many people, the burning, stinging sensation is intolerable. Opiates also can relieve the acute pain, but when used longterm, they can cause tolerance and addiction.

As for the vaccine, although you had shingles more than two years ago, it still could reduce the risk of future episodes. However, no vaccination studies have been done in patients who already have had shingles, so the potential benefit is unclear. In addition, the vaccine won’t reduce your current nerve pain.

In summary, I recommend speaking to your doctor about medications like gabapentin or pregabalin and whether to get the shingles vaccine to perhaps decrease the risk of future episodes.

Dear Doctor: I’m a 78-year-old woman who developed shingles in December 2014.

The rash settled in the nerves on my left side, from under the breast, to the waist and around the middle of my back. Is there anything I can take to ease the pain? Would the vaccine help?

Dear Reader: Shingles is a reactivation of the herpes zoster virus – the virus that causes chickenpox. When people contract chickenpox, usually as children, the virus makes its way along their sensory nerves, ending up at the nerve cells along the spine.

The virus then sits within the cells in a dormant state. It can stay there for the rest of a person’s life and not cause problems, with the body’s immune system keeping the virus in a dormant state.

However, when immunity decreases, the virus can replicate within a nerve cell, following a particular nerve pathway to the skin and creating a rash along that pathway. The most common risk factor for developing shingles is age, with 80- to 89-yearolds having 10 times greater risk compared with those 10 years old and younger.

The nerve pain created by shingles can be severe and can persist even after all the lesions have disappeared. The pain can be burning, sharp or stabbing and can worsen with the lightest touch. When the pain lasts for more than four months, the diagnosis is termed “postherpetic neuralgia,” the pain syndrome you have. There are many medications for postherpetic neuralgia. Tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline, nortriptyline and desipramine work to decrease pain signals from the skin to the central nervous system. The good news is we are now starting prevention trials to try to stop memory loss before it begins! The A4 (Anti-Amyloid Treatment in Asymptomatic Alzheimer’s) study is the first clinical trial designed for people who have the earliest signs of Alzheimer’s disease beginning in the brain, but don’t yet have any symptoms of the disease. The A4 study is enrolling healthy 65- to 85-year-olds across the country who may be at risk for memory loss due to Alzheimer’s disease.

I feel a new sense of hope, but we really need volunteers to join us. Our motto for the A4 study is “Now is the time,” and now really is the time to make a difference in defeating Alzheimer’s disease.

A popular saying goes, “If the facts don’t fit the theory, change the facts.”

At the bridge table, if you do not have a fit with partner, in fact you try to describe your hand as accurately as possible, in terms of high-card strength and distribution.

After North opens one club, East overcalls one spade, South makes a negative double (promising four hearts) and West passes, North imagines that the uncontested auction started one club - one heart. Then, North would have rebid two clubs to show a minimum hand with six clubs.

This is no different. South, with his eye on game, jumps to three notrump.

West leads the spade nine. What happens after that?

South can see seven tricks: two spades, two hearts and three diamonds. So he needs to establish dummy’s club suit, which requires losing the lead twice. This is the rule: When you have two tricks in the suit led and two high cards to dislodge, duck the first trick. Therefore, if East puts up the spade queen at trick one, declarer underplays his six. Then, when South takes the second trick and leads a club, West wins but does not have a spade to lead.

If East remembers this rule, he will play the spade 10 (or eight) at trick one. Then the contract dies.

South has to win with his jack and play a club, but West takes the trick with the king and returns his second spade, setting up East’s suit while he, East, still has the club ace as an entry.

When you hope to establish a suit, try to make the opponents use up their stoppers as quickly as possible.
