NEW YORK – Fox News Channel’s parent company fired Bill O’Reilly on Wednesday following an investigation into harassment allegations, bringing a stunning end to cable news’ most popular program and one that came to define the bravado of his network over 20 years.

O’Reilly lost his job on the same day he was photographed in Rome shaking the hand of Pope Francis.

The downfall of Fox’s most popular – and most lucrative – personality began with an April 2 report in The New York Times that five women had been paid a total of $13 million to keep quiet about disturbing encounBill O’Reilly ters with O’Reilly, who continued to deny any wrongdoing in a statement hours after he was fired. Dozens of his show’s advertisers fled within days, even though O’Reilly’s viewership increased.

O’Reilly’s exit came nine months after his former boss, Fox News CEO Roger Ailes, was ousted following allegations of sexual harassment.

Following the Times story, 21st Century Fox said it had asked the same law firm that investigated Ailes to look into O’Reilly’s behavior. 21st Century Fox leaders Rupert Murdoch and his sons Lachlan and James said in a memo to Fox staff that their decision to ax O’Reilly came following an “extensive review” into the charges.

“I understand how difficult this has been for many of you,” Rupert Murdoch said in a memo to Fox staff.

O’Reilly, denied a chance to say goodbye to his Fox viewers, did so via a statement.

“It is tremendously disheartening that we part ways due to completely unfounded claims,” he said. “But that is the unfortunate reality that many of us in the public eye must live with today. I will always look back on my time at Fox with great pride in the unprecedented success we achieved and with my deepest gratitude to all my dedicated viewers.”

O’Reilly’s dismissal doesn’t signal any change of direction for the network: Fox said conservative pundit Tucker Carlson would

move into O’Reilly’s time slot – the second time in three months he’s replaced an exiting prime-time personality. Carlson, a veteran who has hosted shows on CNN, MSNBC and PBS, had taken over for Megyn Kelly in January when she announced she was moving to NBC News. “The Five,” a talk show with five rotating hosts that regularly airs at 4 p.m., will move into the 8 p.m. time slot.

Eric Bolling will host a new show that airs at 4 p.m. starting next month, the company said.

O’Reilly, 67, had ruled the “no spin zone” on television with a quick smile and an even quicker temper. He pushed a populist, conservative-leaning point of view born from growing up on Long Island, and was quick to shout down those who disagreed with him.

Fans loved his willingness to talk back to power or point out hypocrisy among liberal politicians or media members.

O’Reilly and President Donald Trump are both “crowd-pleasing showmen who know how to signal to loyalists in their audience that they are not taking themselves quite as seriously as their detractors are,” said news consultant Andrew Tyndall. “Half of the fun that they have with their audiences comes from watching the outrage that they manage to provoke.”

“What Rush Limbaugh was to talk radio, Bill O’Reilly has been to conservative television,” said Mark Feldstein, communication professor at the University of Maryland.

“You can’t underestimate the influence and the profits that he brought into Fox News for all these years and that’s why they hesitated so long in doing the right thing.”

His show generated $178 million in advertising revenue in 2015, according to Kantar Media. Before the advertising boycott, there was the prospect of even more: his audience was larger in the first three months of 2017 than it has ever been. With a profit center gone, 21st Century Fox stock fell almost 1 percent Wednesday in heavy trading.

O’Reilly’s pugnacious personality wasn’t just an onscreen affectation, with one of the settlements going to a woman who complained about being shouted at in the newsroom. O’Reilly was alleged to have slowed the careers of women who spurned his advances.

One former Fox personality, Juliet Huddy, said she pulled away and fell to the ground when he tried to kiss her, and he didn’t help her up, the Times reported.

Jonamac Orchard planning for beer sales, new buildings

MALTA – Here’s something new to sip on: Jonamac Orchard is looking to add apple ale and local craft beers to its offerings.

In an amendment to their special-use permit to allow beer sales, the owners of the orchard at 19412 Shabbona Road in Malta are requesting to use their Cider House as a venue to host public and private events outside the fall season, and in the longer term, to build new structures on-site.

The proposed structures include an education center for school tours, a stage for bands, improved admissions buildings, a concession building, a picnic shelter, restrooms, an observation deck and a wraparound porch on the main store.

Before the DeKalb County Board can vote on the amendment, a public hearing on the request will take place May 4. The orchard’s agriculture-themed entertainment is allowed through a special-use permit because the district is zoned for agricultural use.

The orchard was started in 1974 and has expanded over the years to its 105-acre operation. It includes more than 10,000 apple trees featuring more than two dozen varieties of apples, according to the Jonamac Orchard website.

Entertainment features include a petting zoo, corn maze and barnyard play area. The orchard also features a country store and bakery.

Owner Kevin McArtor said the Cider House, which opened in September, was the orchard’s biggest recent project. The plan is to wait a few years to add the new structures. The owners did, however, include those plans in their proposal at the request of the DeKalb County Planning, Zoning and Building Department.

“These are all ideas we have talked about in the past to make things more convenient,” McArtor said.

McArtor said the orchard has been selling wine and hard cider for the past three seasons, but the goal is to have the licensing in place to sell locally brewed beers and its own apple ale, which is considered a beer, in the upcoming fall season. Hard liquor is not included

“We have no intentions of being a bar or tavern,” he said.

If the plans are approved, people will be able to request use of the Cider House tasting facility for events outside of the orchard’s normal August to November season.

McArtor said the number of events would be limited each year to be mindful of local traffic and other possible effects on neighbors.

An example of an event would be the 5K Hard Cider Run that the orchard is planning for June, McArtor said.

He said they are not looking to open the agriculture entertainment features outside the fall season.

Schools waiting on special ed, other funding

The state of Illinois owes school districts in DeKalb County more than $10 million in transportation and special education funding. Aside from a few thousand dollars for driver’s education, local schools haven’t seen a dime in categorical funding for fiscal 2017.

Districts such as DeKalb School District 428 can withstand the delay.

Even after the school board approved the transfer of about $4.2 million from the transportation fund to the education and operations and maintenance funds Tuesday night, the district has about $600,000 in reserves.

Even though District 428 is owed three quarterly payments from the state totaling more than $5 million, Business Manager Andrea Gorla said she isn’t concerned.

Not yet.

“As long as that money comes in by August, we’re good,” she said.

The state’s last payment is due June 20, and the first three were due Sept. 30, Dec. 30 and March 30.

The DeKalb district projects an ending transportation fund balance of $197,000 – a projection that includes the four fiscal 2017 payments.

“I know for some districts, this delay is causing them hardships,” Gorla said. “Fortunately, we’re not in that mode.”

Again, not yet.

Those in that mode include Sycamore School District 427, which has tapped reserves over the past two years “to compensate for the lack of state payments,” Chief Financial Officer Nicole Stuckert said.

The district is owed nearly $2.2 million in categorical payments – about $1.4 million for special education and $800,000 for transportation. The fund’s reserve balance is down to $3,400.

In Kirkland, Hiawatha School District 426 is owed $537,000 by the state, although it has gotten about $3,400 in funding for driver’s education and free lunch and breakfast vouchers – also lumped into categorical funding.

“I’m hoping we get anything at this point,” Superintendent Chad Willis said. “It’s impacting our long-term decisions.”

been meeting to analyze its operations, scraping to find ways to get more efficient. More lean.

Gorla said her district first got its fiscal 2016 funds this past December.

She also said she recently got word from the state that the first quarterly fiscal 2017 payment would arrive in the first two weeks of this month.

The district has received nothing yet.

Theoretically, the state must make the payments. Unlike general state aid, which up until this school year was prorated by the state five consecutive years, categorical payments are vouchered. They have to be paid, right?

“Yes and no,” Gorla said. “They have authority to say they’re not going to pay it, even with the huge lag of payment, when it hits the next fiscal year.”

“Unfortunately, with the state of Illinois, just because they’re mandated to pay this, I’m not confident they will pay it,” Willis said.

Communal garden space scheduled to open next month in Sycamore

SYCAMORE – DeKalb County Community Gardens plans to bring a communal gardening space to Sycamore by mid-May, said Dan Kenney, executive director of the nonprofit.

The Sycamore City Council unanimously passed a memorandum of understanding Monday that allows DeKalb County Community Gardens to use 1.79 acres of city property for the garden without a fee.

It also establishes a flat rate of

$2.97 per 100 cubic feet that the organization will pay for water use. The agreement will have to be renewed on a yearly basis.

The garden is set to go in the former wastewater treatment plant site near Brothers Park in Sycamore’s Electric Park neighborhood. City Manager Brian Gregory said the land has not been used since the plant closed in the early 1990s.

“The site was abandoned, and in the last few years, the remnants have been removed by our public works department,” Gregory said.

As part of the agreement, the city will help spread black dirt over the growing area and install an aboveground water tank, and DeKalb County Community Gardens will be in charge of maintaining the site.

“It would take minimal staff time and involvement, and I think it could have a pretty big impact here in our community,” Gregory said.

DeKalb County Community Gardens operates nearly 40 garden sites countywide, including more than 200 5-by-10-feet raised garden beds and more than 15 acres of food-producing

land, according to its website.

Kenney said the organization still is considering different models for operating the garden, such as renting out individual plots, having everyone share one space or a combination of both.

The garden only would be available to Sycamore residents, Kenney said.

LOCAL BRIEF D-428 superintendent candidate interviews underway

DeKALB – The first round of interviews for six DeKalb School District 428 superintendent candidates began Wednesday.

Board President Victoria Newport said about 50 people applied for the opening through the Illinois Association of School Boards website.

She said it’s been one of the higher turnouts IASB has received.

The board met last week with IASB, which selected six candidates – two of whom dropped out and were replaced – to be interviewed by teams of district staff, community members and parents.

Candidates were given nine questions by each of the six interview teams and also had to complete a writing prompt.

The selected candidate will replace Doug Moeller, who was put on paid administrative leave in September after accusations of sexual harassment. Moeller is set to resign April 30.

DeKalb County Community Garden’s mission is to “strengthen access to fresh, local and sustainably grown organic food for people in need,” according to its website.

Volunteers could bring surplus vegetables from the shared gardening space to local food pantries, or they could form a gardening club and work together to grow vegetables in a plot to bring to the food pantries, Kenney said.

Depending on weather, the goal is to have the garden up and running by the middle of May, he said.

Verizon spokesman Steve Van Dinter said a problem with the fiber-optic cables that carry data caused connectivity problems for a small number of Verizon customers in DeKalb County, and the company is working with its third-party fiber vendor to fix the issue.

U.S. Cellular also is working to resolve its network problem with a third-party vendor, according to a company statement.

The Frontier emergency system experienced a prolonged outage in September and still was experiencing corrupted software by December.

Officials recommend using a landline if residents are affected by the outage and need to contact the center.

DeKALB – It is unknown when 911 connectivity problems in DeKalb County will be resolved, Sheriff Roger Scott said Wednesday afternoon.

Verizon and U.S. Cellular cellphone customers are unable to reach the county’s 911 center, according to a news release sent by the DeKalb Police Department just after 9 a.m. Wednesday. Police said they were aware of the problem about 8:30 a.m.

Charter Communications phone customers also were having problems calling 911, Scott said.

Outages with those services have caused the problem, although all other landline users and subscribers to other cellphone service providers can get through to the center.

Scott said DeKalb County’s Frontier Communications system and equipment have nothing to do with the connectivity problem, which has affected multiple counties.

“There’s nothing within our power to resolve the issue,” Scott said.

He said the service providers are working to fix the outages and will notify DeKalb County 911 officials when the net-

SYCAMORE – A 20-year-old Northern Illinois University student accused of stalking and causing emotional distress to two women was released from jail Wednesday on his own recognizance.

Jake Swick, of the 900 block of Greenbrier Road, was arrested on a warrant at 5:40 p.m.

Tuesday after a fellow student reported that he followed her in his car while she was walk- Jake ing on campus, stopped Swick within 500 feet of her, stuck his head out the window and even circled the block, passing her multiple times, court documents show.

The fellow student reported to the DeKalb Police Department that Swick’s class was not in the area where

she was walking. When police contacted Swick, he refused to talk to authorities in person, claiming he was in class and studying, according to court documents.

A follow-up call to Swick’s teacher revealed he hasn’t been in class since spring break, according to court documents.

Swick, whose recognizance bond was set at $25,000 Wednesday, has five pending violation of order or protection charges, and also is charged with breaking into the fellow student’s apartment March 4, court records show.

They add that the student experienced emotional distress and fear for her safety.

If Swick is convicted of the most serious offense he faces, aggravated stalking, he could face three to five years in prison.

His next court appearance will be at 9 a.m. June 2.

Group: Gov. deceived voters on abortion stance

CHICAGO – Campaigning as a prochoice Republican in 2014, Bruce Rauner said he would sign legislation to ensure abortion remains legal in Illinois and to expand abortion coverage for state workers and Medicaid recipients.

But last week Rauner said he would veto a measure pending in the Legislature that supporters say would do both, citing “sharp divisions of opinion of taxpayer funding of abortion.”

An abortion-rights group on Wednesday accused Rauner of misleading voters to get elected and called on him to uphold his campaign commitment. Personal PAC also released a copy of the candidate questionnaire Rauner completed and noted his wife, Diana Rauner, was among more than 100 people who signed a full-page ad in the Chicago Tribune in October 2014 that described Rauner as pro-choice.

“They actively went out and deceived the voters of Illinois,” Personal PAC President Terry Cosgrove said.

Rauner’s office deferred comment to the governor’s political team, but noted that under existing law Illinois has more expansive Medicaid coverage for abortion than almost every other state.

Prosecutors defend use of Schock staffer as informant

CHICAGO – Federal prosecutors deny investigators overstepped legal lines by recruiting a confidential informant from former U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock’s staff to help build a corruption case against him, accusing the Republican of seeking “to manufacture claims of governmental misconduct” to escape prosecution.

In the same government court filing, prosecutors also raised the prospect that the former Illinois congressman sought to tamper with a witness and urged the person to change grand jury testimony while the investigation was ongoing.

Schock, 35, resigned in March 2015 amid scrutiny over lavish spending, including to redecorate his Washington office in the style of the TV series “Downton Abbey.”

Innocent but insane woman hospitalized for son’s death

ROCKFORD – A Rockford woman found not guilty by reason of insanity in the stabbing death of her 8-year-old son will be hospitalized for life.

Jody Kossow will be confined in the care of the Illinois Department of Human services for 100 years.

She was sentenced Tuesday by Winnebago County Circuit Judge John Lowry.

In rendering his verdict in January, Lowry cited psychiatric reports that found Kossow was criminally insane when she stabbed her son to death in September 2013.

CHICAGO – A Chicago hospital has received a $1 million donation to start a substance abuse program for teens and young adults.

The Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital announced the donation from the Jordan Michael Filler Foundation on Tuesday.

The foundation was formed by Julie and Mark Filler, whose son, Jordan, died of a heroin overdose in 2014 at age 23. It supports programs that help teens and young adults struggling with substance abuse, particularly opioid addictions.

Pence warns N. Korea: ‘The sword stands ready’

YOKOSUKA, Japan – From the wind-swept deck of a massive aircraft carrier, Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday warned North Korea not to test the resolve of the U.S. military, promising it would make an “overwhelming and effective” response to any use of conventional or nuclear weapons.

Pence, dressed in a green military jacket, said aboard the hulking USS Ronald Reagan that President Donald Trump’s administration would continue to “work diligently” with allies like Japan, China and other global powers to apply economic and diplomatic pressure on Pyongyang. But he told the sailors, “as all of you know, readiness is the key.”

“The United States of America will always seek peace but under President Trump, the shield stands guard and the sword stands ready,” Pence told 2,500 sailors wearing blue fatigues and Naval baseball caps on a sunny, windy morning aboard the carrier at the U.S. Yokosuka naval base in Tokyo Bay. “Those who would challenge our resolve or readiness should know, we will defeat any attack and meet any use of conventional or nuclear weapons with an overwhelming and effective American response,” Pence said.

Mattis denounced North Korea’s attempted missile launch as he began a Middle East tour, telling reporters traveling with him to Saudi Arabia, “the leader of North Korea again recklessly tried to provoke something by launching a missile,” he said. Pence’s speech on the aircraft carrier followed meetings Tuesday in Tokyo with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, where he noted that “all options are on the table.”

Abe said that it was a “matter of paramount importance for us to seek diplomatic efforts as well peaceable settlements of the issue.”

“But at the same time,” the prime minister said, “dialogue for the sake of dialogue is valueless and it is necessary for us to exercise pressure North Korea so that it comes forward and engages in this serious dialogue.”

The Trump administration has signaled a forceful U.S. stance on North Korea’s recent actions, dispatching Pence to the Demilitarized Zone dividing North and South Korea on Monday in a show of American resolve. But it remains unclear what might come next.

Behind the heated rhetoric, Trump’s strategy in the region looks somewhat similar to predecessor Barack Obama’s – albeit with the added unpredictability of a new president who has shown he’s willing to use force. Pence said Trump was hopeful China would use its influence in the region to pressure the North to abandon its weapons program. But the vice president expressed impatience with the unwillingness of North Korea to move toward ridding itself of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

Oberweis’ bill imperils public’s right to know

Dissemination of information to residents through publication of public notices protects the public’s right to know.

Through public notices, units of government inform the public about what they are doing or proposing, which, in turn, helps the public effectively engage in the democratic process. The cost for public notices is minimal to each unit of government, usually less than one-tenth of a percent of the budget.

Legislation that took effect five years ago goes further. The Illinois Legislature unanimously approved a bill requiring newspapers to post all public notices they print on a public, free-access centralized website at no additional cost to government. That website is PublicNoticeIllinois.com.

The system works well. Newspapers disseminate public notices and then certify that governments have complied with public notice laws.

The public is served efficiently, in print and online.

However, some people want to change it.

Senate Bill 2032 would allow units of government to bypass publishing notices in local newspapers and, instead, post public notices on their own websites or on a state-run website.

State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, introduced the bill in February; a Senate committee is reviewing it.

Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti is a strong supporter; a task force she headed issued a report in December 2015 that favors the concept of “modernizing public notices.”

Frankly, we are appalled by their cavalier attitude toward public notices and government transparency.

As a respected, independent third party, newspapers reliably transmit this information in print and online. Newspapers for centuries have played a key role in the legal process of public notices by publishing, certifying and archiving them. It’s a long-proven process.

By contrast, government is unreliable.

The Citizens Advocacy Center reviewed Illinois local governments’ track records for posting notices online in three basic areas – public meeting notices, public meeting agendas and approved minutes from public meetings – as required by law through the Open Meetings Act. Of more than 750 websites surveyed, only 73 percent of governments complied with posting meeting notices, 57 percent complied with posting an agenda, and a mere 48 percent complied with posting approved meeting minutes.

That’s unacceptable.

What can the public expect if local governments bypass newspapers and post public notices online?

The same dismal record of noncompliance and lawbreaking.

That would be a terrible blow to transparency.

We are unconvinced that public notices, if placed only on government-controlled websites, would have anything close to the same readership they have now.

Senate Bill 2032 is a radical departure from the proven public notice system that all other states use.

Government inevitably would become less transparent, especially for people who aren’t online.

And the public’s right to know, rather than being protected, would be diminished.

Politicians such as Oberweis and Sanguinetti ought to know better. They should realize that public notices in Illinois were “modernized” more than five years ago through legislation establishing the centralized website.

The bill should be defeated.

Turkey’s ugly election process Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ugly win in Sunday’s referendum on a new, authoritarian constitution for Turkey creates big problems for the country’s secular democratic forces and for Turkey’s Western allies – but also for Erdogan himself.

His victory was not convincing, as he had hoped, but narrow, contested and tainted by the finding of a European observer mission that the pre-election campaign was not free or fair. The country is not united behind him, but polarized – a political reality that even an empowered ruler will ignore at his peril.

To be sure, the Turkish president sounded defiant in the wake of his victory, dismissing Western critics for their “crusader mentality” and hinting that he would embrace harsh new measures, such as reinstituting the death penalty – something that would surely rupture Turkey’s relations with European Union leaders. As it is, Erdogan’s government has purged about 130,000 people from their jobs and jailed more than 45,000 since a failed military coup last summer.

Turkey, however, has not yet reached the state of Egypt or Russia, where elections are grossly rigged and most opposition has been crushed. Even Kurdish towns that have been assaulted by the military in the name of defeating terrorists turned out to vote against Erdogan, as did the large secular populations of Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.

Preliminary results showed 48.7 percent of the country voted against the constitution despite a one-sided campaign in which opposition voices were suppressed. A controversial decision by election authorities to accept ballots that lacked official stamps may have saved Erdogan from defeat, but at the price of further undermining his legitimacy.

Erdogan would be wise to try to defuse some of the opposition by reaching out to opponents, as Western governments urged him to do.

Until 2015, he pursued a peace settlement with the militant Kurdistan Workers’ Party; some observers think he may return to it. But Erdogan’s history over 14 years in office has reflected an increasing hunger for power. If that trend continues, Turkey will face relentless domestic strife.

All of this poses a dilemma for the U.S. and other NATO nations, which badly need Turkey as an anchor of the alliance on the borders of the Middle East but cannot easily countenance its drift toward dictatorship.

In the near term, Western leaders cannot afford to break with Erdogan, but they must do their best to push him toward ending his domestic repression.

The millions of Turks who still seek to preserve democracy and civil liberties will need allies, too.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

VIEWS Ramesh Ponnuru Atlantic, Trump did not campaign as a consistent skeptic of military intervention abroad. “Instead, Trump entered the Oval Office with a bone-deep belief in vengeance, a tendency toward impulsiveness, and a history of saber-rattling rhetoric.”

Intellectuals, whether they are for or against Trump, want to construct an “ism” into which they can fit his politics: an “ism” that includes opposition to free trade, mass immigration, foreign interventions that aren’t necessitated by attacks on us and entitlement reform. But Trumpism doesn’t exist. The president has tendencies and impulses, some of which conflict with one another, rather than a political philosophy.

That’s also true of most voters, especially when it comes to foreign policy. An adviser to President George W. Bush once remarked to me that a lot of people thought Republicans backed Bush because of the Iraq war, when in reality Republicans backed the Iraq

war because of Bush. In the absence of detailed and deep convictions on a foreign-policy issue, voters will side with the politicians whose side they usually take.

Some primary voters surely backed Trump because they thought he would be less prone to Mideast “meddling” than other Republicans, and some people who don’t always vote for Republicans in presidential elections may have found him an attractive choice for the same reason. His stance on trade drew other voters to him.

But trying to figure out what “Trump’s voters” wanted in any detail is a fool’s errand. Take, for example, this argument that “the people who elected Trump” would love for him to embrace a single-payer health care plan. People backed him for a lot of different reasons. Some primary voters thought it was time to have a successful businessman in the Oval Office.

Some liked Trump’s style.

And millions of regular Republicans who detest the single-payer idea voted for him, mostly because they thought he was likely to govern a lot more to their liking than Hillary Clinton would have – just as they had voted for Mitt Romney over Barack Obama.

He wouldn’t have been elected with-

out them.

Is it also true that he wouldn’t have been elected without working-class white voters who want an anti-interventionist foreign policy, protectionism and the rest of what his intellectual vanguard is selling? Maybe. But many Republican candidates who campaigned on a more conventionally conservative platform ran ahead of him in their states.

I’m one of those voters who don’t have strong views on what to do about Syria. I’m inclined to oppose the airstrikes along with Coulter et al.

The fact that a lot of Republican voters seem to be indifferent or opposed to the ideas of prominent Trump supporters, just as they were to the ideas of the conservatives those supporters seek to supplant, isn’t an indictment of those ideas. They should just keep in mind that most voters don’t have ideological commitments, which helps explain why politicians will almost always disappoint those who do.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Rights of citizens more important than conviction rate

To the Editor: I wish to express a fervent distaste for words chosen by State’s Attorney Rick Amato on the event of Jack McCullough’s declaration of innocence.

Amato, after the ruling, said, “There’s a lot of speculation, but there are no answers … no justice. Last night might well have been our last chance for justice. …”

First off, how dare he imply that conviction rates are worth more than the rights of citizens? Justice isn’t about feeling good; it’s about finding the truth. Our justice system places a burden of proof upon the state to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the guilt of the accused. Mr. Amato, had he gone to the Northern Illinois University Law Review Symposium on March 31, would have heard the evidence of Mr. McCullough’s innocence. Based on his conduct, however, I’m sure that he would agree with the appeals court that this

ignored evidence was “harmless error.”

When presented with evidence that creates a reasonable doubt as to the guilt of a suspect and then promptly ignoring it, Mr. Amato is no better than the witch hunters of Salem and violates his duty as a prosecutor and extension of the Illinois Supreme Court. Truly, he should be ashamed.

This is what is wrong with our justice system. It is not a lack of criminal convictions; it is the false witch hunt that prosecutors wish would continue for the sake of their careers.

Give to local charities – we care!

To the Editor: At Oaken Acres Wildlife Center, we recently had a situation with a person

who rescued a wild orphan, and we were unable to contact her within a couple of hours. A couple of hours! Oaken Acres prides itself on returning every phone message in a timely manner. No matter that at this time of year we get up overnight, every night, to feed very young orphans that would die without us.

Or that we have other obligations, such as educational programs that we do for the public at many events.

This person felt it was inexcusable for her to have to wait a couple of hours for a call back, so she decided to leave a very rude voicemail for our staff and said multiple times that we at Oaken Acres just don’t care.

Soon, we will be taking care of nearly 700 orphaned or injured wild patients.

While we know that “your” wild patient is very important to you, it may just not be possible for us to drop everything to answer the phone or return a message immediately. We’re not alone in this.

Many charitable organizations cannot afford to have someone who only answers the phone. Shoestring budgets do not mean a lack of care or caring. But staff time needs to be allocated strategically. Most times, we’re pedaling as fast as we can, so please don’t take out your frustration on someone who is there to help you.

On May 4, the DeKalb County Community Foundation again will sponsor a 24-hour online giving day for DeKalb County charities. There are dozens of worthwhile causes that will benefit from your contribution.

Every one of them will be very grateful if you take the time to participate on that day and say “thank you” to all these people who are working for charitable causes that fill community needs. And please, don’t ever tell them that they don’t care.

In 2016, we found out that conservative elites didn’t speak for Republican voters.

Think-tankers may have hungered for entitlement reform and valued free trade, but a large group of Republican voters disagreed, and another large group had no strong views on these issues. When Donald Trump won the primaries and then the November election, many people who considered themselves conservative leaders found out that Republican voters weren’t who they thought they were.

Now it turns out that Trump’s prominent early supporters don’t speak for the Republican masses either.

Many of these luminaries are unhappy about Trump’s airstrike against the Syrian government.

“Those of us who wanted meddling in the Middle East voted for other candidates,” tweeted Ann Coulter.

Republican voters, on the other hand, overwhelmingly approve of Trump’s action. A Washington Post poll found that 86 percent of them support it.

To the extent these high-profile Trump fans are now disillusioned, it’s because they overread what both the president and his voters stand for.

He’s getting it, and he’s running with it and doing a good job of getting them lined up and in the right call.

“He’s a sophomore right now, but he don’t play like it.”

NIU coach Rod Carey said Pugh is fast and physical – “that’s a good place to start with linebackers,” he said – and that he would have no worries starting a sophomore as the middle linebacker.

He said that the Huskies started Boomer Mays as a sophomore in all 14 games and he started as a freshman in the 2013 Orange Bowl.

As far as Pugh is concerned, Carey said he can tell the linebacker is maturing by the way he’s verbally handling himself on the field.

“You hear it in the way they communicate,” Carey said. “You hear it before you see it. When he’s making his call, it isn’t rushed. It’s understood. It’s calm. When you start to hear those things defensively, you understand the game is slowing down.”

Pugh, who played in 10 games last year but didn’t record a tackle, spent last year behind Payton, who led the team with 81 tackles and 8.5 for a loss and added three sacks and an interception. Pugh said that he struggled with the playbook as a freshman, but that he’s feeling more confident about it. He added that being a sophomore at middle linebacker comes with add-

“It’s a lot of responsibility, especially when you got older guys and you’re trying to yell and get things going and they hold you accountable to get them in the right spots,” Pugh

said. “I have to watch more film than anybody and make sure I’m doing my responsibilities.”

Knowles has said this year’s linebacker group is “relentless” running to the ball and has liked what he’s

seen. As far as Pugh, the speed is already there, Knowles said.

“Kyle has got a great burst,” Knowles said. “When he diagnoses a play and triggers, he goes. That’s what you love to see.”

What does it mean?

“It’s a short snippet,” cautioned manager Rick Renteria, who saw rookie Dylan Covey give up three homers and eight runs in five innings in what was the Bronx Bombers’ ninth win in 10 games. For the Sox, it marked their first series loss of what looked like a testy trip that started in Cleveland and Minnesota.

“It’s a long season,” Renteria said.

“But hopefully they just continue to push. There are highs and lows, and hopefully they stay even keel.”

Renteria pushed hard from the first day of spring training to demand a clean brand of ball and let the chips fall where they may.

“We’ve had a couple of blips,” he said.

“But overall it has been a very positive

road trip.

“Everybody came into the season not thinking about the restructure or the changes that are going on. Everybody prepared to play the game. I don’t think even at this moment that anyone is thinking about what might happen or what might not happen.”

The trades and rumors of trades that are part of the everyday existence in rebuilding haven’t affected the Sox, at least not yet, Renteria said.

“I don’t think so,’’ he said. “You can’t control those things.”

The Sox went into Wednesday’s game leading the major leagues with a 2.55 ERA. The bullpen, at 1.30, also led the league, and when Tommy Kahnle struck out Chase Headley, Matt Holliday and Jacoby Ellsbury with upper-90s heat in the seventh, the pen had 52 strikeouts over 432/3 innings of work.

CHICAGO – If Cubs players were wearing their World Series rings to Wednesday night’s Bricks and Ivy charity ball, they might have shown fans the inscription.

On each player’s ring, it reads: “We never quit.”

That was the rallying cry last year, and it rang out in the clubhouse after Game 7 of the 2016 World Series.

Apparently, it’s still a thing this year.

Addison Russell hit a walk-off threerun homer in the bottom of the ninth inning off Neftali Feliz to cap a four-run rally and lift the Cubs to a 7-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field.

“Absolutely, we feel very strongly about that,” Russell said of the slogan. “It seems that whenever you kind of count us out, we seem to have a spark. That’s all it takes, just one hit, one walk and we get rolling.”

The Cubs were on the brink of falling below .500 again at 7-8, as they trailed, 4-1, in this game. But the victory moved them to 8-7 and had them feeling good again after scoring back-to-back come-from-behind victories over the Brewers to take two of three in the series.

Over the previous weekend, the Pirates swept the Cubs in three, and it seemed a little queasiness had crept in during an emotional homestand, during which the Cubs raised their championship banner and received those rings.

Predators on verge of series sweep

mlazerus@suntimes.com NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ryan Johansen has been everything you’d want in a top-line center during the first-round series between the Blackhawks and Nashville Predators. He has a goal and four assists in three games, and his line has completely dominated play while leading the Predators to a stunning 3-0 series lead.

That he’s doing it against one of the game’s great No. 1 centers, Jonathan Toews, makes it even sweeter. The mere fact that he’s even going up against Toews in a playoff series is something Johansen has been relishing.

“Yeah, it’s awesome,” he said. “Obviously, you want to be measured by how you play against opponents like we’re playing now. For me, it’s a fun opportunity to play against a guy like Toews, and all the other stars on their team that have had so much success over the last seven seasons and won a few Cups. To be able to be happy with your game against those guys is a pretty satisfying feeling.”

Toews, meanwhile, hasn’t been satisfied in some time. The last time he scored a postseason goal, Patrick Sharp had the primary assist, way back in Game 5 of the 2015 Stanley Cup Final. That’s 12 straight playoff games without a goal for the Hawks captain as he prepares to lead his team into Thursday night’s do-or-die Game 4 at Bridgestone Arena.

“That’s something I’m obviously well aware of, and no better moment than a game like [Thursday],” Toews said after

Wednesday’s practice. “I’ve waited long enough. You’ve got to go out there feeling lucky, like you’re going to work for that bounce. I’m just trying to stay patient and smart and do the right things.

Obviously, no more waiting. [Game 4] is a big game, and a great time to come through and make a big play.”

Somebody has to. The Hawks have scored a measly two goals in 10 periods against the Predators in this series, and while much of the discussion has been on the Predators’ trapping defense, and the outstanding play of the Johansen line, and the adjustment process for the handful of young Hawks getting their first taste of postseason hockey, it still falls on the Hawks’ biggest stars to lead the way.

And that starts at the top, with the man in the middle.

Toews always has been a streaky scorer, but his occasional offensive lulls almost always are offset by his defensive prowess and all the other little things he does so well. That hasn’t been the case in this series. But if he can get the offense going, it not only could get the Hawks on the board but help keep Filip Forsberg, Johansen and Viktor Arvidsson off it.

“We need more out of everybody, whether it’s his line or [Artem Anisimov’s] line,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “We look across the board.

We always find that when we’re in some tough spots, our top guys always find a way to lead the charge, and find a way to overcome all obstacles. And we’re going to need them. But we’re going to need everybody else, too.”

Rondo steps up when playoffs start

That’s Rajon Rondo’s mindset come the playoff stage.

An attitude saved for not only the opposition, but for the media.

“Hard-core dawg,” was how former Bull Taj Gibson once described Rondo earlier this season. “Just hungry.”

need everybody, him included, probably more than anybody. He’s the general out there. The point guard, he’s running everything. He knows that because he’s such a smart player.”

It’s that basketball IQ that has not only been on full display through the first two games of the best-of-seven series, but a key reason the No. 8 seeded Bulls have the top-seeded Celtics down

2-0 and looking helpless.

That’s why Dwyane Wade freely admitted that he “hated” Rondo through all the Miami-Boston wars from back in the day.

“Hated him … hated him as a competitor,” Wade said. “That hate is that respect. When we played against Boston back in the day, he knew all the plays. He messes up your first option.

And then he knows the second option.

We were just good enough to have a third option. He was that good.

“I think for me and Jimmy to have someone who is so locked in, that gives us a different voice. [Coach] Fred [Hoiberg] gives us a voice, [but Rondo] we know we can go to him and ask anything. He’s watching film all the time.

Our job was easy. We just had to play.”

Play they have, and while Butler and Wade have been freed up to do their thing, Rondo fell just a rebound short of a triple-double in Game 2, but his role as agitator and disruptor weren’t the kind of things that fall into a box score.

“Yes, a lot of talking,” Nikola Mirotic said of Rondo with a laugh.

Enough talking that Boston guard Avery Bradley was all but begging his

teammates to change their body language so that Rondo would stop feeding off it.

“I looked around and, a few times in the game, guys were putting their heads down, I think getting down on themselves,” Bradley said. “I could even hear Rondo like, ‘Yeah, they gave up. They gave up.’ ” An adjustment the Celtics might want to make quickly, but not one that will save them from the inevitable.

This Bulls team was better suited for the playoffs rather than the regular season all along, and now that they’ve squeaked in someone has to pay for it.

Rondo is no stranger to playing collector in mid-April.

“For the playoffs, me in particular, you get a couple of extra days rest for the body,” Rondo said, explaining why he always seems to raise his game to another level in the postseason. “You get three or four days of prep on a team, lock into their game plan. And I’m playing plus minutes. I don’t know what it is. I try to lock in and do what I can for my team.”

And the bad news for Boston? The “dawg’s” not full yet.

YCAMORE – Fiona Ward loves living in Sycamore. She loves how open and welcoming everyone is, and she has made countless friends.

Ward is not a Sycamore native.

Originally from England, she has only lived in Sycamore for 18 months.

Ward volunteers at the Sycamore History Museum, where she has helped put together the newest exhibit: “Adventures To and From Sycamore.”

The exhibit tells the stories of people from Sycamore, the interesting places they have traveled and how they either came to live in or came to leave Sycamore. The exhibit will have four themes: education, immigration, exploration and military.

The museum, located at 1730 N. Main St. in Sycamore, is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and by

appointment. Admission costs $5 for adults and is free for members and children younger than 10.

Training for docents – tour guides – will be at the exhibit 7 p.m. Thursday, April 20. If community members are interested in becoming docents, call the museum at 815-895-5762.

Michelle Donahoe, the museum’s executive director, said that the subject of this year’s exhibit was chosen because everyone has a “How did you get here?” story. Donahoe moved to Sycamore from Morton Grove 18 years ago.

“For such a small town, we have such interesting history,” Donahoe said. “People that live in Sycamore may think nothing exciting happened here. Doing research, it’s easy to come across stories that are fascinating.”

One story that will be featured in the exploration section of the exhibit is

that of pharmacist Preston Jones, who left Sycamore for Alaska in the 1890s during the Klondike Gold Rush. As part of the exhibit’s interactive, handson display, children can pan for gold outside the museum.

Another story featured is that of Georgia Townsend Yates, a Sycamore native who married sea captain Jack Yates and traveled by clipper ship from Maine to Japan in 1891 with their infant daughter. The Yateses’ steamer trunk and wedding silverware will be on display at the museum.

Jayne Higgins, a member of the museum board, helped research the stories in the exhibit and edit the final storyboard panels. Higgins said that one of her favorite aspects of the exhibit is that it shows the adventurous nature of people from Sycamore.

DAILY CHRONICLE The DeKalb Festival Chorus will celebrates its 45th year with a Spring Concert featuring works by Franz Schubert and Ralph Vaughn Williams. The concert will be at 7 p.m. April 29 at First Lutheran Church, 324 N. Third St. in DeKalb.

The DeKalb Festival Chorus is a community choir whose mission is to provide “an inclusive community of singers building artistic excellence and sharing the joy and transformative power of choral music.” The DFC is comprised of 55 members, representing all ages and ability levels. Repertoire includes both classical and contemporary works and often features collaborations with other local artists.

The chorus was founded more than 45 years ago and has had a variety of directors, from Ellwood Smith to the current director, Paul Marchese, in his second year with the chorus.

Featuring at least two concerts a year, the chorus also

collaborates with local groups, including the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Community School of the Arts Children’s Choir, and the Northern Illinois University choral program. In recent years, the chorus has participated in programs such as Give Local DeKalb and ArtiGras.

The DFC spring concert on April 29 will cover all kinds of musical territory, from the sacred to the poetic. Franz Schubert’s setting of the Mass in G will be contrasted with visions of the apocalypse in Stroope’s “Revelation.”

The words of Shakespeare provide the text to the ethereal “Serenade to Music,” a beautiful ode to music from “The Merchant of Venice.” A string quintet from the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra will accompany these classic works.

The DFC also will partner with the KSO to sing the choral movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony on May 6 at NIU Boutell Memorial Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Penguin Project launches 2017 production Organizing begins on ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ DAILY CHRONICLE Children’s Community Theatre’s Penguin Project will host the organizational meeting for its 2017 production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at 5 p.m.

All roles in Penguin Project shows are filled by children and young adults who are differently abled.

Those artists are teamed with a peer mentor. The artist-mentor pairs work side-by-side throughout the summer, both learning all of the lines, lyrics, dances and more that is required for the role. When show time arrives, both appear on stage, with the artist

stepping into the spotlight, while the mentor is there to assist – prompting lines, assisting with dances, etc.

Along the way amazing friendships are formed and skills are built for both artists and mentors.

Artists must be at least 10 years old at the start of rehearsals (the first week in May) and no older than 22 years old at the time of the show (the last weekend in September).

Mentors must be at least 10 years old.

This will be the eighth production presented by Penguin Project.

Past shows have included “Shrek,” “Annie,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Fiddler on the Roof.”

“Each year we try to find something that will challenge and excite our cast, and we think we have found that in this year’s selection of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” CCT Penguin Project Director Tracey Busby said in a news release.

The show, one of the biggest hits in Broadway history, tells the biblical story of Joseph, who is sold into slavery by his 11 brothers and eventually rises to a position of great power in Egypt.

The show has no dialogue, instead it is entirely sung, and employs many different styles of music including country and western, calypso, and even rock ’n’ roll that The King would have loved.

At the April 23 organizational meeting, the program’s creative team will describe the program, lay out the schedule for the summer, explain expectations and answer any and all questions. Both potential artists and mentors and their parents should attend. Mentors older than 16 may attend without a parent.

Chorus celebrating 45 years of song

New York Times best-selling author Jeff VanderMeer will speak at 7:30 p.m.

Monday at the DeKalb Public Library.

The talk, hosted by Northern Illinois University’s STEM Read and the Friends of the NIU Libraries, is free and open to the public.

VanderMeer is the writer and editor of books of speculative fiction and a three-time winner of the World Fantasy Award. His Southern Reach Trilogy (“Annihilation,” “Authority” and “Acceptance”) prompted the New Yorker to call him “the weird Thoreau.”

The film adaptation, starring Natalie Portman, will be released this fall.

King-Cargile says it’s fitting that he’s visiting just after Earth Day because his books often describe the destruction of the Earth and incorporate real elements of nature and ecology. Everything from a flower to a dead mouse to a giant sea star might become an agent of destruction.

STEM Read has chosen “Annihilation” as an official selection and will be exploring the book and concepts of world-building in speculative fiction with high school students, writing experts and ecologists at NIU earlier in the day. In the coming weeks, the program will post lesson plans and activities related to the book at stemread. com.

Registration open for summer art, jazz, theater camps DAILY CHRONICLE Theater, visual arts and instrumental jazz are on the summer camp agenda at Northern Illinois University this summer.

At Summer in the Arts at Northern residential camps for junior high and high school students, campers work and live with NIU faculty, alumni and students, gain a greater appreciation for the life of an artist, and experience their art as never before.

NIU Jazz Camp and Theatre Arts Camp Junior are scheduled for July 9 through 14.

NIU Jazz Camp attracts instrumentalists in grades 8 through 12 who want to take their jazz playing to the next level. Campers rehearse and perform in a big band, combo or Latin jazz combo, preparing for the final day concert. Master classes, concerts, jazz theory, improvisation, jam sessions, sectionals and optional private lessons are all part of the daily curriculum.

The camp is under the direction of Geof Bradfield, noted saxophonist and jazz studies faculty member at NIU. Theatre Arts Camp Junior is designed for theater buffs who have completed grades 6 through 9. Camp-

Theatre Arts Camp Senior is an intensive program for students who have completed grades 9 through

12. Senior campers spend the week in rehearsals, classes and individual coaching sessions, honing skills and preparing for the final day performance. Workshop choices include auditioning, acting, musical theater, stage combat, makeup and lighting and set design. Camp director is Nathan Wyman, professor of theater at William Jewell College near Kansas City.

Campers sleep and eat in newly renovated Gilbert Residence Hall, located near the NIU Music and Art buildings. A variety of evening recreational activities include bowling, basketball, movies, talent shows and more.

Early registrations, postmarked or received before June 1, receive a $60 camp fee discount. Returning campers save an additional $25. Need-based scholarship applications are being accepted through May 1.

Headaches also can be the result of eye strain, allergy, hunger or fasting, fever, fatigue, dental problems, lack of fluids and hangover, to name just a few. The truth is, the subject of headache is vast and extremely complex. And despite many strides forward (remember that dead-mole-on-the-head cure?), science still has more questions than answers.

What signals that a headache may be something to worry about?

• A major change to the pattern of your headaches, such as going from a few a month to one a day.

• The sudden onset of persistent headaches, particularly after age 50.

• A headache that is the most severe you have ever had.

• The onset of a headache after a traumatic event to the head.

• Any headache that alters cognitive function, is accompanied by fever and a stiff neck, or includes symptoms such as slurred speech, blurred vision, weakness, numbness or seizures.

These can be signs of underlying conditions such as head injury, infection, tumor, high blood pressure, fluid buildup in the skull, decrease in blood flow or bleeding in the brain.

This all sounds alarming, so let us assure you again that these conditions are rare.

However, if any of the above happen to you, please be safe and seek immediate care.

Dear Doctors: I’ve always had headaches, from the time I was a teenager. But now I get them more often – about one headache a week. Is this a warning sign of something?

Dear Reader: Headache is among the most common – and ancient – of physical complaints. You would be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn’t suffered from a headache at some point.

Mentions of headache in written texts date back to 1200 B.C., and treatments over the centuries have included leeches; garlic; oil in the ear; tying a dead mole to one’s head (no, we’re not making this up); magnets; electricity; psychotherapy; and that universal refuge, the soothing bath.

Most headaches are periodic bouts of pain centered in the head and/or neck. It’s not the brain tissue itself that’s sending pain signals – it’s the surrounding tissues, blood vessels and nerves that serve the area. Many headaches respond to medication and lifestyle changes. Some, however, such as migraines, may persist despite treatment. Some headaches can be warning signs of larger problems such as blood clot, stroke or tumor. Thankfully, those are rare.

Although there are many different types of headache, most fall into four categories: • Tension headaches are the most common, marked by dull pressure, like a band tightening around your forehead.

• Sinus headaches, which cause a deep, throbbing pain, occur when the cavities around the cheeks, nose and forehead become inflamed.

• Cluster headaches, marked by severe pain in and around one eye, get their name because they often occur in clusters, but they are less common.

• Migraines, which can last for hours or even days, cause debilitating pain, often on one side of the head. They can be accompanied by flashes of light, photosensitivity, a blind spot in the field of vision, tingling

Some of the parents become quite emotional if things don’t go well, and Dad doesn’t need to be doing this. Yet he continues. Have you any ideas on getting Grandpa to keep his opinions to himself? We don’t want to ban him from games and treat him like a 5-year-old who can’t behave, since he still is able to travel to see us for these visits. We try to sit away from others, but it’s not always possible. – Embarrassed In Houston Dear Embarrassed: You already know the answer to your problem, and I do not understand why you haven’t taken action. Was your father always this way, or has he become demented? When an adult acts like a 5-year-old and behaves inappropriately after having been cautioned against it, there is cause for concern.

If he is unable to control his behavior at those games, instead of being allowed to ruin them for everyone within earshot, he should absolutely be banned from attending. If you won’t do it for the sake of the players and other parents, then do it for your father’s safety, because one of these days, an irate parent or relative may punch his lights out.

A single lump sum proposal will be received for All the Work required.The bid documents may be examined and obtained at Barb City Manor, 680 Haish Blvd., DeKalb, IL 60115, and at the office of the Architect, Donald C.
