Facebook killer takes his own life as police close in

ERIE, Pa. – The man who randomly gunned down a Cleveland retiree and posted video of the crime on Facebook killed himself Tuesday during a police chase in Pennsylvania that began when a McDonald’s drive-thru attendant recognized him.

It marked a violent end to the nearly 48-hour multistate manhunt for Steve Stephens, whose case brought another round of criticism down on Facebook over how responsibly it polices objectionable material posted by users.

Acting on a tip from the McDonald’s, state troopers spotted Stephens leaving the restaurant in Erie and went after him, bumping his car to try to get it to stop, authorities said. He shot himself in the head after the car spun and came to a stop, police said.

“This started with one tragedy and ended with another person taking their own life,” Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said.

“We would have liked to have brought Steve in peacefully and really talked to him about why this happened.”

Stephens, a 37-year-old job counselor who worked with young people, was wanted on murder charges in the killing of Robert Godwin Sr., 74, a former foundry worker and father of 10 who was picking up aluminum cans on Sunday when he was shot.

The chilling video was on Facebook for three hours before it was taken down. It was just the latest instance of crime footage being shared on social media.

Police would not speculate on what triggered the killing, but in the video and other footage he posted, Stephens talked about having trouble with his girlfriend and losing everything he had to gambling. He said he “just snapped.”

One of Godwin’s daughters, Debbie Godwin, said she wished Stephens had been captured.

“I’m not happy he’s dead at all, not at all. If you did it, you have to face your crime,” she said.

The break in the case came when police received a tip that Stephens was at the McDonald’s in Erie, in far western Pennsylvania about 100 miles east of Cleveland, where he ordered a 20-piece Chicken McNuggets and fries.

The McDonald’s employees tried to “buy some time for the cops” by telling Stephens his fries were delayed, but he said he had no time to wait and drove off, DuCharme said.

Police picked up the trail in a chase that lasted 2 miles before Stephens took his own life, authorities said.

Gail Wheeler, of Erie, said she was stopped at a light at the McDonald’s when Stephens came “whipping out” of the parking lot, nearly hitting her. She said state troopers weren’t far behind.

Wheeler said she followed the chase and saw a trooper clip Stephens’ rear bumper. His car did a half-turn and came to rest against the curb, and she heard a gunshot, she said. She then saw officers approach the car.

The officer closest to the car “just shook his head,” she said. “They had their guns out, but when he shook his head, they lowered their guns.”

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, faced a frequently raucous crowd of more than 500 people at a question-and-answer forum Tuesday at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles.

Hosted by five League of Women Voters groups, Hultgren fielded questions for 90 minutes that covered topics ranging from forcing President Donald Trump to release his tax returns to requiring insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions and abstinence-only sex education.

“I am committed to voting no,” Hultgren said about the prospect of a health care bill being presented that would allow insurance companies to deny coverage because of pre-existing conditions. “I have been very upfront about this. ... The current system we’ve got is not working like we thought it could.”

Hultgren represents the 14th Congressional District, which includes eastern DeKalb County, including the city of Sycamore.

He had been pressed by some in the public to answer questions from constituents in the wake of Trump’s election. Congressman Adam Kinzinger, who represents the 16th District and the rest of DeKalb County, has faced similar demands but has not yet made such an appearance.

When Hultgren said health care reform could be done through a marketplace with options, it was met with boos and people holding up red cards – a symbol of disagreement.

Asked whether he would support a single-payer system such as Medicare for all, Hultgren responded: “I think Medicare is great. I don’t think it’s the only answer out there.”

Booing commenced again.

But the crowd did cheer when Hultgren said the most effective form of constituent advocacy was protest, and when he said he doesn’t want to support another government shutdown.

“We want our kids to be healthy and safe,” Hultgren said. “I think it’s a shame to believe your kids are going to make bad decisions.”

Hultgren said he agreed there should be a law in place requiring presidential candidates to disclose their tax returns, and he defended a procedural vote against requiring Trump to do so because the election was over.

“In America, we have ex-post facto – we cannot go backward,”

Hultgren said.

When asked whether he would take steps to impeach Trump if an investigation showed collusion between Trump and Russia to influence the election, Hultgren said, “What I’m going to do is my job.”

“I absolutely don’t trust Russia.

They are not our friend,” Hultgren said. “I’m going to do everything I can to protect you. My allegiance is to you.”

Hultgren attended the forum after weeks of protests from constituents demanding a public town hall at his Campton Hills district office.

Among the constituents who attended was Linda Ottum of Huntley,

who said she was happy to see that Hultgren finally agreed to a meeting with his constituents.

“I’m frightened for what’s happening in our country right now,” Ottum said. “I wish the people that we’re sending to Congress would work with one another across the aisle and try compromising instead of being in their own little factions. Nothing is getting done when they’re working that way.”

Ottum said that when she was young, Democrats and Republicans worked together.

“And now it’s so polarized that the people are not being served because of this type of action,” Ottum said.

Romeoville man charged with assaulting officer

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A 26-year-old Romeoville man involved in a domestic dispute is facing battery charges after attacking a Sycamore police officer Tuesday at a gas station, police say.

Lt. Jim Burgh of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called at 2:43 p.m. to a domestic dispute between Robert Mills and his sister in the Kishwaukee Hospital parking lot.

Mills was at the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, according to the sheriff’s office.

Sycamore Deputy Chief Jim Winters said Mills fled the lot, and police found him at the Phillips 66 gas station at 2001 DeKalb Ave., where he punched an officer several times. He was arrested across the intersection at 3200 Bethany Road.

Winters said the officer was treated for minor injuries.

D-428 board rejects extra $834K in proposed budget expenditures

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A group of added expenditures to the DeKalb District 428 fiscal 2018 budget totaling $834,075 was rejected by the school board during its Tuesday meeting.

This extra proposed spending in facility operations and full-time positions had been recommended by the Finance Facilities Advisory Committee, a group that assists the school district in financial decisions, during their meeting last week.

The budget initially was projected to increase by eight teacher FTE, or the unit used to indicate a full-time position, but new projections recommend a total teacher FTE increase of 15.25 and one assistant FTE. With a projected cost of $67,500 for one teacher FTE and $27,000 for one assistant FTE, the proposed increases would have added more than $500,000 to the budget.

The committee also recommended an extra $317,700 for high-priority facility operations and to hold off on HVAC projects for Lincoln Elementary School and Huntley Middle School for further consideration by the fall or winter of 2017.

made a motion to recommend the FTE increases, but it was not seconded. No motion was made on the facility operations increase.

With the proposed changes, the fiscal 2018 budget would have had a nearly $3 million deficit with the conservative 89 percent General State Aid proration. At 95 percent, the budget deficit would be about $1.7 million. At 100 percent, the deficit would shrink to about $666,000.

“What happens at the state level and what they will provide makes things very different in terms of what our budget is going to look like,” Financial Accounting Manager Cindy Carpenter said.

However, the district unanimously adopted a resolution authorizing the transfer of $4.25 million out of the transportation fund to be distributed to both the education fund and operations and maintenance funds, which are in the most need of additional funding according to the resolution.

The full amount will be transferred to the education fund, and $2.75 million will then be moved from the education fund to the operations and maintenance fund.

Although the resolution was open to public comment during a hearing before the vote, no one spoke on the funds transfer.

Joe was the eldest son of Robert F. and Lois E. (Hart) Hickey born on November 10, 1945, in DeKalb, IL. He graduated from Shabbona High School in 1963 and was salutatorian of his class.

Joe received a bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University. Joe then taught four years of junior high school math and coached junior high school basketball in the Wenona School District. He left education to work as a computer programmer for DeKalb

Born: December 24, 1936; in Fairfax, MO Died: April 17, 2017; in DeKalb, IL Mary Frances Kuryliw, 80, of DeKalb, IL formerly of Harvard, IL passed away on Monday, April 17, 2017, in DeKalb.

She was born on December 24, 1936, in Fairfax, MO, to Herbert and Margaret (Brim) Stoner. Mary lived in Harvard from 1941 to 2003; she attended the Harvard Schools and graduated from Harvard High School. Mary worked for a local dentist for 11 years and later worked as a secretary for the Harvard School District from 1978 until her retirement in 2002.

From the age of 5, she was raised in the First United Methodist Church in Harvard and continued to raise her own family there. She loved serving the Lord through UMW, teaching Sunday School and being a loved youth group leader where she became “Ma” to everyone.

She enjoyed doing crafts, sewing, scrapbooking and quilting; however, her main passion in life was her family. She celebrated her life by sharing stories of how much she loved God and her family. Her smile and laughter will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.

On June 23, 1956, Mary married Walter Kuryliw in Fairfax, MO. He preceded her in death on March 13, 1973.

Survivors include their children, Cynthia (Michael) Poelking, Chester (Renee) Kuryliw, Herbert (Wendy) Kuryliw; eight grandchildren, Matthew (Megan) Poelking, Kevin (Caitlin) Poelking, Michelle (Jackson) Govatos, Andrew (Jacky) Kuryliw, Jennifer and Amy Kuryliw, Justin (Justine) Kuryliw and Jared (Maeva Demers) Kuryliw.

She was preceded in death by her parents,

spouse, and three siblings, Gary (Barbara), Betty Ann (William) and Donald Gene.

He was born October 9, 1943, in Chicago, the son of Marco and Mary (Schalo) Rossi.

He was a graduate of Downers Grove High School Class of 1962, then attended and graduated from Northern Illinois University.

Jerry worked as a mental health specialist at the Elgin Mental Health Center from 1970 until he retired in 2002. He also was a bartender for Terry’s, which later became Hink’s Bar & Grill in Sycamore.

He is survived by special friends, Leon and Melissa Jordan of Sycamore.

KIRKLAND – A familiar face will lead Hiawatha School District 426 next school year while a permanent superintendent is sought.

Board members announced Monday that they intend to hire Bill Mattingly, 64, who served as interim superintendent the first semester of the 2015-16 school year. He said he’ll sign a contract in the coming days, once a question about it gets answered.

Wayne Reisen handled the superintendent duties the second semester in 2016, and the board hired Theodore “Chip” Hickman leading up to the current school year. His Theodore last day was March 10 “Chip” because of what board Hickman President Ryan Block called “differences in beliefs, culture and direction.”

“His mentality was kind of the bigger districts,” Block said. “The culture he got into was different Ryan from what he thought Block it would be.

“We’re not Batavia. Hiawatha does not have that big-city mentality.”

Leading up to his hire on July 1, Hickman said the size of the district, which serves about 580 students, was a draw.

Principals handled the superintendent duties the week after Hickman’s departure, and the board approved Reisen for the role at its March 20 meeting.

Reisen was Sycamore School District 427’s superintendent for seven

years until he retired in 2012. Mattingly has 23 total years’ experience as a superintendent. His most recent fullfledged stint was fives years in Oregon, before he retired in 2010.

Because Reisen and Mattingly are retired, they can’t work more than 100 total days in a school year. Block said Mattingly’s 100 days will be spread out throughout the school year, and he’ll be paid for each day he works.

Most likely, Mattingly will work most of those 100 days in the first semester, when most of the heavy lifting is done.

“Usually, second semester is a lot of monitoring and testing, between PARCC and SAT,” Block said.

Block said no committees have been formed to find a new superintendent, but he said having Mattingly’s guidance the entire year will be invaluable. The goal is to have a permanent replacement entering the 2018-19 school year.

Block is on his way out as board president, having been elected Kirkland village president April 4. Tim Hall ran to keep his seat on the board, one of three that were open going into the election. Newcomer Ralph Ziegler won a seat, too, and with Block’s departure May 1, two seats will be open.

He said a few residents expressed interest in the seats, so he’s confident they’ll get filled within the 60 days that boards are given to fill seats.

Block said that when he joined the board two years ago, many things were in disarray. He said he’s confident now that the new board will make the right hire after he’s gone.

“The board is very, very strong, and they’re going to do great things going forward,” Block said.

He said he hopes so.

“Education plays a big role in the community,” he said. “The school is the heart and soul of our town.”

CHICAGO – Attorneys for former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich urged an appellate panel Tuesday to grant him a third sentencing hearing, arguing their client’s behavior in prison justifies sharply reducing his 14-year term for corruption.

Some Illinois school districts offer free ACT exams

CHICAGO – Thousands of high school juniors in public schools across Illinois will also get to take the ACT college entrance exam courtesy of their districts in addition to the free SAT. According to ACT Inc., New Trier Township High School, Lyons Township High School District 204, Adlai Stevenson and Warren Township are among about 30 public school districts and private schools giving the ACT to their students.

ACT Inc.’s contract ended with Illinois public high schools after 15 years, the Chicago Tribune reported. The College Board’s SAT won a multimillion-dollar contract from Illinois to give its exam to more than 140,000 juniors starting this spring.

But educators said the history and connection to the ACT didn’t go away as

students in many district had taken precursor tests in earlier grades to pave the way for the ACT as juniors.

“So we’ve started them on the path to the ACT, but the state decided to go with the SAT in the middle of all this and we didn’t feel it would be fair for our students to not have a test they were familiar with,” said Scott Eggerding, director of curriculum and instruction at District 204.

Adlai Stevenson spokesman Jim Conrey said the district also wanted to honor its commitment to students who had received ACT-focused training.

CHICAGO – Town hall meetings to discuss opioid abuse are scheduled in the Chicago area.

The West Side Heroin Task Force had a town hall meeting Tuesday to examine what officials have said is an opioid crisis.

Presentations were given by the Illinois Department of Public Health and Chicago Department of Public Health. Others discussed drug abuse and child custody, overdose prevention and information

about overdose-reversal medication.

The 2017 HERO-HELPS Southwest Coalition Community Summit will be Friday at the Edward Hospital Athletic and Event Center in Romeoville.

There will be a panel discussion about the Illinois Prescription Opioid Overdose Prevention Grant and prevention methods underway by Will, DuPage, Lake and Cook counties.

Jury awards $350K in teen’s fatal Chicago police shooting

CHICAGO – Jurors have awarded $350,000 in damages in a lawsuit brought by the mother of a black teen fatally shot

The Chicago Tribune reported that the jury found the July 2013 shooting of 17-year-old Christian Green unjustified.

Rovner also asked Blagojevich attorney Michael Nash whether Zagel was obliged to factor in laudable behavior by Blagojevich. Nash said his objection was that “Zagel dismissed it out of hand.”

The current appeal, filed in December, said Zagel should have put greater weight on 100 letters from fellow inmates who described how Blagojevich taught history and served as a life coach to prisoners. He even formed a prison band called The Jailhouse Rockers.

A bullet struck Green in the left side of his back, piercing his lung and heart. Court records show Green’s gun was found in a vacant lot about 75 feet from his body.

Henderson said the money won’t bring Green back, but is symbol that he mattered.

Lawsuit: Prosecutors faked evidence to convict man

CHICAGO – A lawsuit alleges two former prosecutors conspired with a Chicago police sergeant and others to fabricate evidence that led to a wrongful murder conviction.

The lawsuit filed Monday seeks $60 million in damages for Armando Serrano.

He and co-defendant Jose Montanez were released last summer, after more than two decades in prison, when prosecutors dropped charges.

The lawsuit alleges that former Detective Reynaldo Guevara and then-assistant state’s attorneys Matthew Coghlan and John Dillon collaborated to pressure a key witness into pinning the 1993 murder of Rodrigo Vargas on Serrano.

Trump signs an order targeting visa program

KENOSHA, Wis. – Turning back to the economic populism that helped drive his election campaign, President Donald Trump signed an order Tuesday he said should help American workers whose jobs are threatened by skilled immigrants.

At the headquarters of hand and power tool manufacturer Snap-on Inc., Trump signed an order that asks the government to propose new rules and changes that will stop what he called abuses in a visa program used by U.S. technology companies. Dubbed “Buy American and Hire American,” the directive follows a series of recent Trump reversals on economic policies.

“We are going to defend our workers, protect our jobs and finally put America first,” Trump declared, standing in front of an American flag fashioned out of wrenches.

Much like some previous orders, however, Trump’s executive action Tuesday essentially looks for detailed reports rather than making decisive changes. In this case, the reports are about granting visas for highly skilled foreign workers and ensuring that government purchasing programs buy American made goods as required by law.

Trump chose to sign the directive at Snapon Inc., based in Wisconsin, a state he narrowly carried in November on the strength of support from white, working-class voters. Trump currently has only a 41 percent approval rating in the state.

He campaigned last year on promises to overhaul U.S. trade and regulatory policy, but his executive orders on those issues reflect the administration bowing somewhat to the limits of presidential power. Also, he has recently reversed several populist prom-

ises, including standing up to China, which he contended was manipulating its currency and stealing American jobs, and eliminating the Export-Import Bank, which he billed as wasteful subsidy.

But Trump returned to Tuesday to the economic tough talk of his campaign, saying: “We’re going to make some very big changes or we are going to get rid of NAFTA for once and for all,” referring to the Clinton-era U.S. trade pact with Canada and Mexico.

In his new directive, the president is targeting the H-1B visa program, which the White House says undercuts U.S. workers by bringing in large numbers of cheaper, foreign workers and driving down wages. The tech industry has argued that the H-1B program is needed because it encourages students to stay in the U.S. after getting degrees in high-tech specialties – and because companies can’t always find enough American workers with the skills they need.

The new order would direct U.S. agencies to propose rules to prevent immigration fraud and abuse in the program. They also would be asked to offer changes so that H-1B visas are awarded to the most-skilled or highest-paid applicants.

The number of requests for H-1B visas declined this year by about 15 percent, or roughly 37,000 applications, but the total was still nearly 200,000, far more than the 85,000 limit.

Tuesday’s order also seeks to strengthen requirements that American-made products be used in certain federal construction projects, as well as in various grant-funded transportation projects.

The commerce secretary is to review how to close loopholes in existing rules and provide recommendations to the president within 220 days. The order also asks agencies to assess the use of waivers.

Respect beliefs of those who are against abortion We don’t need to spend public funds paying for abortions in Illinois.

Legal abortion long has been the law of the land since the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision of 1973. It is likely to remain the law.

However, there is a substantial group of people who object to abortion on moral grounds.

They sincerely believe that abortion is equivalent to killing children. They consider it odious.

Out of respect to those people, public funding of abortion procedures in Illinois has been limited to abortions that are deemed “medically necessary” to protect the health of the mother, and that funding is provided as a result of a court order.

According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, about 600 women die each year from pregnancy and childbirth-related reasons, a figure that would be higher were abortion not possible.

Saving a life is a good use for public funds.

But we don’t need government to go beyond that.

A group of Democratic state representatives disagrees. They have proposed House Bill 4103, which would delete language that stipulates public health benefits programs, including for state employees, cannot be used for abortion or other pregnancy termination services.

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has said he would veto the bill, and we agree with that stance.

A change in the rules could lead to the state paying to terminate many pregnancies.

Changes to state law prohibiting public funding for abortion took effect in 1980.

In the yearlong period that ended June 30, 1978, public funds paid for more than 12,700 abortions in Illinois, at a cost of $1.8 million.

Abortion opponents argue those numbers could be higher today.

Even if they were half that, it’s still more than 6,000 abortions that the state could help finance.

We often hear that the state should not endorse or support religion because not everyone shares the same beliefs on the subject.

Abortion is a similar issue.

Courts have found it constitutionally protected, but public sentiment on the topic varies greatly.

We should respect the beliefs of those who oppose abortion by not requiring they contribute to funding the procedure with their tax dollars.

Community journalism worth big prize He didn’t mince words, and those words have landed the editor at a small Iowa newspaper the prestigious Pulitzer Prize, putting him in the company of winners from the Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post and The New York Times.

Art Cullen, the winning editorial writer from the Storm Lake Times, caught the notice of many media and their followers this week for being the little guy who made the big time. His prize was tied to opinion pieces he wrote for the 3,000-circulation newspaper that helped unveil the corporate donors behind a lawsuit over nitrate pollution in local rivers. The topic is a familiar one in farming country, and taking on big ag as Cullen did is not for the faint of heart.

Aside from prompting journalists who work at small newspapers to stand up taller, Cullen’s award stresses the crucial importance of local journalism.

His editorial writing was based on impressive expertise that came from lots of solid reporting.

It is the public that suffers if reporters aren’t poring over data, attending meetings, and combing through court documents. Not knowing what’s going on in your community because no one is paying attention or bothering to dig below the surface hurts society in general on a number of levels,

including economic.

Years ago when Blue Earth County was filling its landfill at an alarming rate because its low fees attracted haulers from elsewhere, this newspaper covered the issue and the practice stopped. When the county fell behind on updating its property assessments and expensive houses weren’t on the tax roll, this newspaper wrote about it and the problem received attention.

When the project to improve Highway 14 from North Mankato to Nicollet was passed over repeatedly because government officials argued it wasn’t a high priority, this newspaper challenged those assumptions and proved the stretch was one of the most dangerous highways in the state. The report drew notice and legislators approved the Corridors of Commerce program; the $40 million project from North Mankato to Nicollet received corridor program funding.

Community newspapers the size of Storm Lake’s or Mankato’s don’t have a corps of investigative reporters who can spend a year on one topic. But they know their communities and the serious publications, no matter what their size, aren’t afraid to shed light on the good, the bad and the ugly.

America is indeed worth fighting for BP has not been pleased.

Indeed, BP, who is one of my readers, has been downright disappointed with what she’s seen in this space since last year’s election.

She wrote me about it a few days ago. Her email said, in part: “I had hoped for your articles to be the beacon of light to show the way a democracy should work. Instead I am finding hopelessness and unrelenting anger at the outcome and all that has come since. “... We need intellectuals with a balanced mind to help us go forward. No matter how much we disagree with the direction, we need to be guided the humane way, not the angered way. Anger begets anger begets irrational and hateful behaviors. We have enough of that.

“Would you consider helping guide us to be more humane instead of just angry? Journalists have the most amazing influence and I have always felt that way about your words. Please use your words to move us forward. We already know how to be angry.”

I think BP makes an important point. Here’s how I replied: “I’ve struggled with the issues

you raise since November. Frankly, I would love to be a ‘beacon of light.’

But the fact of the matter is, I don’t feel particularly hopeful and I am angry. Everything that has happened since January 20th has only reinforced my pessimism.

“I worry for the future of this country in a way I never have before. With the possible exception of the 1850s – the decade preceding the Civil War – we have simply never been this divided. Frankly, I don’t know if reconciliation is possible.

I’m beginning to wonder if it’s even desirable. “... I think honesty is something every writer – and in particular a writer of personal essays – owes a reader. I could conceivably write the kind of columns you’re asking for, but it would be a lie. And I’ve always believed that at some subliminal level, a reader always knows when he’s being lied to.”

BP wants light. But just now, all I have is resistance.

And if by reading our exchange, you’re struck by my cynicism about reconciliation, you should know that, for whatever it’s worth, I’m struck by it, too.

I am, after all, the same guy who once wrote columns denouncing politicians who blithely floated the idea of secession.

But that feels like a hundred years ago, before we became this Frankenstein’s monster of ill-fitting parts.

America is a story of victory over long odds, a movie where the hero smashes through in the final reel.

Our national mythology holds that the worst only happens in other countries. We are spared because we are us.

So it’s understandable that some of us are sanguine, even now, that we will eventually figure out how to knit those parts back into a functioning and cohesive whole.

But the 12 weeks since Jan. 20 have seen more scandal, international incidents, incompetence, instability, lies and jaw-dropping embarrassments than the previous

people’s property?

I myself still have radio interference problems with the FPL turbines in Milan Township, which have never been completely resolved.

I am an amateur radio operator, and now I have to look at the possible problems to my north with another wind farm being considered.

It is not very fair for the board members to approve test towers, which could result in another wind farm in this county, as we already have too many here.

I would hope that the board members would consider the many problems that are also shown on YouTube

with people complaining about the very many problems that they are having after the towers are put in place.

It should also be pointed out that during the many hearings we have had, people have brought up their many concerns with wind turbines and see mostly nobody in favor of the idea.

I also would like to remind the board members that wind energy does not work on calm days and that the energy they generate cannot be stored for future use.

I am very thankful that we have a reliable source of electrical power

America is threatened as it has never been before.

And it occurs to me that faith in inevitable salvation is a luxury we can no longer afford.

Whatever comes next, there is nothing predestined about it. If America is to be saved, it won’t be because we are us.

It won’t be because some columnist wrote soothing words. It will be because enough of us decided America was worth fighting for, and did.

That’s what I’ve been trying to say.

You may think it alarmist. If that turns out to be the case, I’ll be happy – indeed, relieved – to concede the point.

Meantime, I am reminded of what Aristotle said: “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” That’s always been America’s saving truth.

Time for us to decide whether it still is.

Weckerly breaks discus record

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – At the Ottawa ABC Invitational on Saturday, Connor Weckerly broke the Sycamore discus record only to have teammate Trey Wideman break it minutes later.

On Tuesday, Weckerly took back the record.

The senior thrower took first place in both the discus, with a school-record mark of 160 feet, 1 inch, and shot put in a three-team meet with DeKalb and Morris on a windy night in Sycamore.

“It’s cool but it’s still competitive – Trey can throw it pretty far, so it’s nice to have competition and know there’s somebody there to keep pushing you,” said Weckerly, whose mark of 158-2 at the Ottawa ABC Invite was bested by Wideman’s 159-6.

Weckerly threw 51-0.5 in the shot put for first place, while Wideman took second place in both the discus (148-2) and shot put (44-1.5) to help the Spartans take first place as a team with 74 points – ahead of both DeKalb (44) and Morris (27).

“I think (school records) are good motivation for the kids,” Sycamore coach Pete Piccony said. “It goes up on the board. We have some that are from the ’60s. The fact that this thing has fallen three times in the past week, it gives motivation to keep hitting something. Middle of the season, I don’t know if they care about scoring points at a Tuesday meet, but setting a school record is more motivation and the fact that these two are pushing each other makes it even more fun to watch.”

On the girls side, Sycamore (58) took first, defeating Morris (46) and DeKalb (23). The Barbs were resting their key contributors.

Sycamore freshman Kylie Feuerbach won the shot put (32-4) and took second in the discus (86-3), while Spartans’ freshman hurdler Mary Wetzel took first in the 300-meter hurdles (58.21 seconds) and second in the 100 hurdles (20.57).

In the boys high jump, DeKalb’s Brian Ross and Sycamore’s Griffin Schroeder each cleared 6-1, with Ross winning the tiebreaker for first place. The Spartans swept the distance events – Jake Carani won the 1,600-meter run (4:49.04) and Lucas McKay took the 3,200 (10:50.49) – and the Barbs dominated the 400-meter relay team, with Keonte McKinnie, Zuerek Day, Tristan Bujarski and Tyrese Dyson winning with a time of 43.89.

Weckerly, who lived in Sycamore through the eighth grade before his family moved to Wisconsin, is new to the Sycamore program this season and is a commit to Ole Miss. He said that he’s been disappointed with his throws during meets compared with what he’s done in practice, but that it feels good to retake the record from Wideman.

“I don’t really want it to go back and forth,” Weckerly said, laughing. “I’d be really happy for him, but I’d be mad at myself for not throwing what I’d like to throw.”

By the numbers: The other local winners in the boys meet were Sycamore’s Joe Petersen (800-meter run), Tremaine Thomas (long jump) and 1,600-meter relay, while DeKalb’s 800-meter relay, Jacob McCann (pole vault) and Nathan Hooper (triple jump). For the girls teams, Sycamore’s Hannah Kirby (1,600), 400-meter relay, Emma Gerwig (pole vault) earned first-place finishes and DeKalb’s Anaiah Rollins (800), Destinisha Eleme (triple jump) and 800 relay all won.

Beyond the stats: Wideman’s name

went up on the team’s records on Monday – the day before Weckerly retook the top spot.

They said it: “The school record is going to go down to whoever can break it,” Piccony said. “If Connor breaks it this year, he better set it at a mark that no one can beat because Trey’s a junior, so he can come back and get it next year. Trey’s got more cracks at it

than Connor does.”

Up next: The DeKalb boys at the Rocket Relays at Burlington Central on Thursday and the Sycamore boys are at the Peterson Prep Invitational at Kaneland on Saturday.

“You have to give credit where credit is due. I can cry about injuries all I want, but everybody gets injuries,” Parillo said. “But I thought DeKalb did a great job today.”

The Knights had a chance to score in the first five minutes of the second half, when a shot went off the legs of goalkeeper Meghan Hanson and rolled a few feet in front of her. She was able to beat the closest Kaneland attackers to the ball for the save.

Hamilton said the defensive back four – Lindsy Franzene, Emma Rourke, Haley Brown and Grace Bauling – played very well.

“I thought it was another really

stout performance by them,” Hamilton said. “Another shutout and continuing to get better each and every game. This was 16 players working together to continue to get a result for our team and we’re proud of the effort tonight.”

By the numbers: The two goals were the most the Knights have scored this year.

Beyond the stats: The win was the fourth in a row for the Barbs and the sixth in seven games after an 0-3 start.

They said it: “First off you have to credit DeKalb more than what we did or didn’t do,” Parillo said. “We’re battling some key injuries, but it’s not really excuses – just something you have to deal with, to make sure the other ones will step up a little bit. We’re young, have the team is underclassmen, so it’s a good learning experience for us.”

Up next: The Barbs head to Geneseo on Thursday, while the Knights head to Rochelle.

Big inning dooms Barbs Spartans face hitting clinic

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Considering the 16-run loss on Monday, it was a much more competitive game up until the top of the sixth inning when the Yorkville Foxes scored seven runs and reached the runrule again in a 17-7 win.

At the end of the fifth inning, in spite of having walked six batters and hitting three others, the Barbs (6-10 overall, 0-5 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) trailed, 10-7. Yorkville managed to score at least two runs in four of the first five innings and DeKalb relief pitcher Max Lange seemed to be settling in.

The sixth inning, however, was incredibly productive for the Foxes. Yorkville (15-2, 4-1) began the inning with two popouts that left fielder Charles Roberts tracked down and caught for the first two outs of the inning. DeKalb would not record another out until eight batters later. While Lange walked two batters in the inning, the Barbs defense also committed two errors during the inning, allowing runners to score. The inning was capped by the Foxes on the two-run homer hit by Ty Liaromatis.

production included Zach Haddox, who went 3 for 5 with three RBIs, and Lucas Farren, who made it on base all five at bats, walking each time and added a stolen base.

“We were missing our spots,” coach Dedric Wright said. “We hit a lot of batters. We walked a lot of batters. We just didn’t get it done in the field today.”

Offensively, the Barbs kept pace with Yorkville for most of the game.

They fell behind, 3-0, in the first inning.

In the second inning both teams scored two runs. Headed in the bottom of the fifth, Yorkville led 10-3 but the Barbs came roaring back putting together four runs.

Bryce Wheeler started off the fifth with a double. Matthew Searls followed it up with a bunt down the third baseline for a single and Lange hit a double to get two runs in. Ian Panke grounded out to drive home a run as well. Finally, Roberts hit a single to score Lange.

Roberts finished 3 for 3 for the Barbs with an RBI while Derek Kyler also had a strong hitting performance, going 2 for 4 with an RBI. The Barbs hope to bounce back from Tuesday’s 17-7 loss as they continue their three-game series against Yorkville at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Morris pitcher Andy Peters didn’t need much help, but his team mashed behind him, clubbing Sycamore, 13-1, in the second game of their series.

Peters pitched all five innings, striking out seven batters and not allowing a run until the final inning, when the game was already out of reach.

“We knew we’d be playing behind a good arm today. We have a lot of confidence when Andy (Peters) is on the mound, Morris coach Todd Kein said.

“He’s throwing well for us and we take that confidence into the batter’s box with us.”

An aggressive Morris took advantage of four Sycamore errors as the team batted around in the fourth inning, scoring six runs and turning a five-run lead into an 11-run blowout.

The Spartans (10-5 overall, 2-3 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) offense fizzled, managing only one hit, a single by Jack Mizgalski in the fourth inning.

Morris (10-6, 1-1) would then add two more runs in the top of the fifth in

their last at-bat.

Peters finally showed a crack in the armor in the fifth inning when he walked two batters and hit another.

But the Spartans could only manage one run as Austin Mereness scored on a fielder’s choice by Logan Riley.

“Our plan is always to minimize strikeouts. Clearly we weren’t able to do that today. We had a bunch,” Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said.

“We’ll give their pitcher a ton of credit. He’s good and we knew he was good coming in.”

Morris started the scoring with two runs in the second inning then added three more in the third before their offensive explosion in the fifth.

Beyond the stats: Peters had at least one strikeout in every inning, including the final out of the game.

They said it: “There’s still a third game of the series to play Thursday at Morris. We play in a very competitive league and the way you win the league is by winning two of three,” Cavanaugh said. “There’s not many sweeps in our league because everybody is pretty good.”

Up next: Sycamore and Morris play the rubber game of the series at 4 p.m.

MAPLE PARK – As a freshman on the DeKalb girls soccer team, Hanna Hickey was with the Barbs when they scored a win against Kaneland.

It took three years, but Hickey and the Barbs picked up another on Tuesday.

Hickey scored in the ninth minute, freshman Darian Lucas added a goal in the 36th minute and the Barbs won, 2-0, on the road.

“It feels good to have the hard work pay off and finally get the win over them,” Hickey said. “They played us tough and gave us a good game.”

The Barbs (6-4 overall, 2-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) spent most of the first half taking advantage of having the wind at their backs. Maddie Hill played a ball in from the left corner, crossed it in front of the goal and Hickey knocked it in.

“We had a really good warmup,

were really on top of it and came out really strong,” Hickey said. “We were just able to get a good service and finish it. She beat the defender out wide and had a clean service.”

Hickey just missed a second shot in the 18th minute, but the Barbs got an insurance goal with 4:44 left in the first half when Lucas scored when the ball bounced out of the scrum in front of the net after a corner kick.

“It was a couple kids doing some really great things,” DeKalb coach PJ Hamilton said. “They put some pressure on the ball and created some great things for us. Getting one early was crucial, but just as crucial was knowing we needed that second goal.

We understood the foot doesn’t come off the gas pedal, we have to get a second.”

There was a scary moment for Kaneland in the first half when Holly Collingbourne to a shot directly to the face.

“We’re like this,” the three-time AllStar insisted.

Butler was hoping that was the end of the discussion, but it wasn’t.

There’s still lingering questions to answer about how a team was so inconsistent, so dysfunctional during the regular season, and was now moving closer to history by becoming just the sixth No. 8 seed to knock off a No. 1 seed.

Thanks to 22 points, eight rebounds and eight assists from Butler, as well as Rajon Rondo coming a rebound short of a triple-double, the Bulls took a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-ofseven series, beating Boston, 111-97, in the TD Garden.

Not bad for a team that has survived in-fighting, distrust between players and front office, a major trade, and an ever-changing lineup.

“That was back then,” Butler said, wanting to focus on what the Bulls are

You can’t worry about the past, there’s nothing you can do about it. As long as

you focus on today, the right now, we’ll be all right.”

They’re more than all right.

They’ve become a well-oiled machine, and can thank Butler for that transformation.

Yes, reinserting Rajon Rondo and Nikola Mirotic back into the starting lineup last month was key, but it was Butler willing this team to a 9-4 record over their final 13 regular-season games to earn the tie-breaker over Miami and the playoff ticket that saved

the season.

A season that Butler has no intention of letting end in the first round.

Even before the series started on Sunday, Butler was all smiles, privately letting people know that there was no fear of a top-seeded Celtics team devoid of any real star power.

Again on full display in Game 2.

Of course the Celtics came out with more emotion, jumping out to a quick 7-0 run, but emotions only have so much staying power. Matchup problems? Those aren’t going anywhere, and again showed itself in the Bulls’ favor.

Too big on the boards, and too much big-game experience, as the Bulls completely overwhelmed the sinking Celtics, outscoring them, 31-19, over the rest of the first quarter.

Boston coach Brad Stevens did his best to look for some sort of spark, especially with his team down, 54-46, at the half, and came out for the third quarter with a new-look starting lineup. Out was Amir Johnson and in was Tyler Zeller.

The results was a quick 13-6 run, as the Celtics cut the lead to one, but then a reality check over the remainder of the second half.

That meant Butler playing the role of facilitator, Rondo playing the role of agitator, and Dwyane Wade waking up after a three-quarter slumber and finishing Boston off with 11 points in the final stanza.

Northern Illinois softball player Sam Schmidt was named the Mid-American Conference West Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.

In the four games last week, Schmidt went 5 for 13 with two home runs, five RBIs and two stolen bases to help the Huskies (21-16 overall, 9-6 in MAC West) win three of the contests.

Gonzalez nearly goes distance in Bronx

NEW YORK – The rebuilding White Sox have had their moments, like Tuesday night for example, when they don’t look much like a rebuilding team.

Right-hander Miguel Gonzalez turned in the latest crisp start, going 8 1/3 innings of one-run ball in a 4-1 victory over the Yankees. David Robertson entered to record the final two outs against his former team, and after walking in a run, notched his fourth save in as many opportunities.

And Avisail Garcia launched a three-run homer to deep left in the seventh as he continues to run roughshod over AL pitchers in the first two weeks of the season. Garcia is leading the major leagues with a .440 average.

He has three homers and a team-high 13 RBI. Coming to a crashing halt was the Yankees’ eight-game winning streak and carrying on was the steady brand of baseball the Sox have played while building a 7-6 record. They are 5-3 on a road trip that began against the defending AL champion Indians, continued with the AL Central leading Twins and is finishing with the hottest team in the game.

You are rebuilding, right Rick Hahn?

Yes, he is. And it’s too early to burn the plan and “go for it.”

Of course it is.

“We can wait a little bit longer to change course,” Hahn said.

“Not [at] 12 games or whatever it is. Maybe 15.”

Hahn was kidding, of course.

“Oh no, I’m hearing about it,” he said. “I saw an article recently about whether we’d stick to our plan if we continued to win and you know, we were like 6-5 at the time. We were 23-10 last year, remember? Let’s give this thing a little time to unfold.”

Leury Garcia homered against Luis Severino in the third to give the Sox a 1-0 lead. And Gonzalez (2-0) needed only 87 pitches to get through 81/3 innings.

The Sox close their road trip Wednesday night with Dylan Covey pitching. A Rule 5 draft pick, he is picking up innings while Carlos Rodon takes his time getting back on the disabled list. The Sox are in no rush to get their prized lefty back in action.

“Look, we’re committed to having a long-term view of what we’re trying to accomplish here,” Hahn said.

“If for whatever reason various unexpected opportunities present themselves over the course of the summer we’ll respond accordingly, but right now we remained focused on building sustainable for the long term.”

Cubs manager Joe Maddon wasn’t lamenting that the Pirates’ Starling Marte hit a home run against his team over the past weekend and then was suspended 80 games Tuesday for violating Major League Baseball’s drug policy.

“I don’t look in the rearview mirror,” Maddon said. “I’m glad that the drug situation is working, the policies, the drug enforcement. That’s all that means to me. Yeah, you could go backward and get upset about moments like that and if they would have done this (test) sooner, would it have made a difference? I don’t know. I don’t live that way.

“I just think that moving it forward, it’s good that it’s actually in place, that it’s working. Is it perfect?

Probably not. But I also believe when something like this occurs as we move forward, whatever is falling through the cracks eventually will not anymore.”

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo said he would like to see more testing.

“I think any system that’s in place, you’re going to have people trying to beat it,” he said. “It’s no different here. If there are loopholes, guys know that. He happened to get caught, but I’m sure there are other guys who are doing something very similar because to get caught with something that aggressive in his system, there’s obviously something going on.

“We’ve made a lot of strides in baseball, but anytime there’s something you can beat, someone’s going to try to do it. That’s the nature of human beings. It’s 15 minutes to where we should be getting drug-tested a lot more.”

No problem with ring thing: Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said he feels there’s no problem with how the Cubs handled a stipulation concerning the team distributing World Series rings.

The Cubs want to discourage people from selling the gifts for a profit.

To that end, everyone getting a ring – except for the players and Joe Maddon and his coaching staff – had to sign an agreement that would allow the team to buy back the ring for $1 if the person wanted to sell it.

SPRING INGREDIENTS ... and some easy ways to use them

ngredients and their availability can tell you a lot about time and place. In a country where it’s easy to buy a lemon no matter where you are and no matter what time of year, it can be hard to remember how food and the seasons are closely tied.

When it comes to spring, there are certain items, such as tender green shell peas, that help us stretch toward the light after a long winter. And then there are ingredients such as asparagus that are available pretty much everywhere, all the time, but taste so especially good in season. In noticing the distance between the OK and amazing, and the pleasure of celebrating something when it has a small window of time, there’s a valuable life lesson.

Some of the best – and my favorite – spring ingredients are a mix of the readily available and the fleeting. From eggs to sweet crab, the five featured in the accompanying recipes all are wonderfully versatile – so much so that easy variations showcase their range and will encourage your own creativity.

The shaved asparagus salad is dressed with a North African-inspired mixture of preserved lemons, their brine, honey, olive oil, and is sprinkled with pistachios. If you can make that, you also can lean toward Italy and use fresh lemon juice instead of the preserved lemon and substitute pine nuts and Parmesan for the pistachios. Or leave Western flavors altogether and make an easy mixture of toasted sesame oil, rice vinegar and soy sauce, then shower the stalks with sesame seeds.

One of the simplest ways to turn rhubarb from sour and tough to sweet and yielding is to chop it and simmer it with sugar and water. This mixture

can be strained and mixed with lime juice and seltzer for a pink twist on a Lime Rickey, or mixed with the same plus some tequila for the most beautiful margarita (throw it in the blender, if you wish, and salt the rims of your glasses). Or you can purée the poached rhubarb with its syrup and fresh strawberries and freeze the mixture to make a granita that has all the flavor of strawberry-rhubarb pie without all the fuss of making one.

Peas and mint have been friends for a long time, but I like to combine them with spinach, ginger, cilantro and fish sauce for a more Vietnamese approach. Add cumin seeds and a dollop of yogurt, and you’re transported to India. Swap extra garlic for the ginger and basil for the herbs, and you’ve got a simple Italian side dish. Fresh peas shine in all of these, but frozen peas make these recipes good anytime.

I eat eggs nearly every day, but a soft-boiled one feels like the best way to honor a really fresh spring egg. Soft-boiled ones with their luxurious yolks, especially, can stand up to bold flavors. My favorite thing to do is to combine them not only with something assertive, but also something rich and fatty to make them extra indulgent. Enter avocado and kimchi . . . or butter and anchovies . . . rich yogurt and a spritz of bright lemon. Anything goes. Eat these combinations on toast or with nutty cooked grains for some texture contrast.

Crab might be the most indulgent spring ingredient of all. My mantra is when I splurge, I make it worth it. The featured salad is a mixture of crabmeat, small potatoes and watercress, all bound with a mustardy, lemony, creme fraiche dressing. It’s what I imagine ladies who lunch eat, but I’d rather spend my money on crab than a mediocre salad. The crab and potatoes can be smashed into cakes that

you pan-fry and serve with the sauce for dipping. Or swap spaghetti for potatoes and let the lemon pour down for the most delicious pasta.

From my kitchen to yours, spring.

Grain Bowls and Soft-Boiled Eggs with Avocado and Kimchi 4 servings

4 large eggs 4 cups cooked grains, such as brown rice and quinoa Flesh of 1 ripe avocado, thinly sliced 1 cup drained cabbage kimchi, finely chopped, plus 3 tablespoons juice from the jar 3 tablespoons mayonnaise Kosher salt 1 small handful fresh cilantro leaves, finely chopped Bring a medium saucepan of water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Gently add the eggs; cover and cook for 6 minutes (it’s best to set a timer).

Once the time’s up, use a slotted spoon to transfer the eggs to a colander and rinse them under cool tap water to stop them from cooking. Tap the eggs on a work surface and peel them.

Divide the cooked grains among individual bowls. Evenly divide the avocado and kimchi among them, then place one egg on each portion. Break it open or allow your guests to break their own.

Shaved Asparagus Salad with Pistachios and Preserved Lemon Dressing

2 tablespoons grapeseed oil (may substitute canola or vegetable oil) One 3-inch piece peeled fresh ginger root, minced (2 tablespoons) 2 cloves garlic, minced 2½ cups shelled fresh peas (may substitute 13 ounces frozen small green peas) 2 tablespoons water 5 ounces baby spinach (may substitute fresh pea shoots/tendrils) 2 tablespoons fish sauce 1 small handful fresh mint leaves, coarsely chopped 1 small handful fresh cilantro leaves, coarsely chopped Heat the oil in a large nonstick skillet over high heat. Add the ginger and garlic and cook, stirring, until they’re sizzling and smell very fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add the peas and water; cook, stirring, until they’re bright green and tender, about 2 minutes.

Add the spinach and cook, stirring, until wilted, a minute at the most (2 large spoons used as if you were tossing a salad makes easy work of this). Turn off the heat and stir in the fish sauce, mint and cilantro. Serve right away.

Soft-Boiled Eggs with Anchovy Toasts 4 servings

4 large eggs Unsalted butter, at room temperature 4 thick slices country bread, toasted Good quality anchovy fillets, drained Crushed red pepper flakes or chile oil, for garnish Bring a medium saucepan of water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Gently add the eggs; cover and cook for 6 minutes (it’s best to set a timer).

Once the time’s up, use a slotted spoon to transfer the eggs to a colander and rinse them under cool tap water to stop them from cooking. Tap the eggs on a work surface and peel them.

To serve, generously butter each slice of toast and place on individual plates. Arrange anchovy fillets on top (to taste), then gently crush a soft-boiled egg on each portion. Sprinkle some crushed red pepper flakes or drizzle lightly with chile oil.

Rhubarb Rickeys 4 servings

2 rhubarb stalks, finely chopped (about 9 ounces total) 1/2 cup water 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup fresh lime juice (from 2 limes) 2 cups plain seltzer Ice

1 lime, cut into thin slices, for garnish Combine the rhubarb, water and sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring now and then, until the rhubarb is softened. Let cool, then strain into a pitcher through a fine-mesh strainer, pressing down to extract all the flavor from the rhubarb. Discard those solids or reserve for another use. The syrup yield is about 1/2 cup.

Stir the lime juice and seltzer into the rhubarb syrup.

Fill 4 highball glasses with ice. Put a few lime slices in each one. Divide the rhubarb rickey mixture among the glasses and serve right away.

Crab, Spring Potato and Watercress Salad 4 servings

1 pound small white creamer potatoes or fingerlings Kosher salt 12 ounces jumbo-lump crabmeat 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 teaspoons red chile paste, such as sambal oelek 1/3 cup creme fraiche 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1 large bunch fresh watercress (tough stems discarded), coarsely chopped 1 small handful minced fresh chives Place the potatoes in a large saucepan set over high heat and cover with 1 inch of cool water. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of salt and bring to a boil. Lower the heat to a simmer and cook the potatoes until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain the potatoes in a colander and let them sit until they’re cool enough to handle.

Meanwhile place the crab in a large bowl

and drizzle with 1 tablespoon of the oil, 1 tablespoon of the lemon juice and the chile paste. Stir gently to combine and season lightly with salt. Whisk together the remaining oil and lemon juice in a large bowl along with the creme fraiche and Dijon mustard. Season lightly with salt.

Cut the warm potatoes in half or into bite-

2 tablespoons finely chopped preserved lemon, plus 1½ tablespoons preserved lemon brine 1 teaspoon honey 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt 1 pound fresh asparagus, tough ends trimmed 3 tablespoons roasted, unsalted shelled pistachios, lightly toasted and coarsely chopped Whisk together the chopped preserved lemon, its brine, honey and oil in a large mixing bowl. Taste and season lightly with salt, as needed.

Use a sharp vegetable peeler to shave each asparagus spear into long ribbons, adding them to the bowl as you work. If any of the asparagus tips break off while you’re doing this, just add them as well. Use your clean hands to gently coat the asparagus with the dressing.

Transfer to a serving platter; sprinkle with the pistachios and serve right away.

Does Vitamin D prevent respiratory infections?

mentation had no effect on people with normal vitamin D levels, i.e., greater than 20 ng/ml.

In another 2012 study, patients with normal vitamin D levels were randomized to receive 100,000 units of vitamin D or a placebo monthly for 18 months. The authors concluded there was no difference in the rates, or the severity, of upper respiratory infections between those who took vitamin D and those who took a placebo. The latest study, to which I believe you are referring, was a combined analysis of 25 studies from around the world, including Afghanistan and Mongolia. This analysis linked vitamin D supplementation to a 12 percent reduction in the number of people who developed at least one respiratory infection.

However, in further analyzing the data, the authors found most of the benefit for vitamin D supplementation was seen in those with levels less than 10 ng/dl, which is very low. The authors did not find any statistical benefit in vitamin D supplementation among people with levels greater than 10 ng/ml. The authors also found daily or weekly intake of vitamin D had a greater benefit than larger doses given monthly.

In summary, vitamin D does seem to have benefits in decreasing colds and flu in those who have exceedingly low levels of vitamin D – numbers not seen in the majority of the population. Further, patients with chronic illnesses, elderly people and residents with long, cloudy winters may find vitamin D supplementation can decrease the frequency of upper respiratory infections.

Dear Doctor: I’m hearing that vitamin D can reduce the risk of colds and flu – and that more foods should be fortified with it.

What’s the evidence for that?

Dear Reader: As a doctor, I’m skeptical about such a broad claim. As I wrote in a previous column, vitamin D is not so much a vitamin as a hormone within the body. It’s produced by the body, and many foods are rich in the substance. If your vitamin D levels are normal, ingesting more vitamin D wouldn’t seem to help prevent the common cold.

That’s not to say such thinking is new.

The famed English general practitioner Robert Edgar Hope-Simpson, noting the influenza virus occurred predominately in the winter, surmised that lack of exposure to the sun may make people more susceptible to influenza. He also noted that in tropical climates, influenza occurs more often during the rainy season when there is a decrease in exposure to the sun. To produce vitamin D, the human body needs sun exposure, so the purported connection between vitamin D and colds seems to have started with that correlation. Further, a deficiency of vitamin D can lead to decreased white blood cell function, impeding the body’s ability to fight infection. Additional vitamin D stimulates the production of antimicrobial peptides.

As for scientific research on the topic, a 2012 study of 30 patients with chronic lung disease and very low levels of vitamin D (less than 10 ng/ml) showed a 43 percent reduction in exacerbations of the disease when they were given 100,000 units of vitamin D monthly (average 3,200 units a day) for one year.

Commonly, these exacerbations are related to infection. A 2015 study showed similar findings of a 43 percent reduction in moderate to severe exacerbations among lung disease patients with vitamin D levels below 20 ng/ml.

However, vitamin D supplementation did not change the upper respiratory infection rate. Also, in both studies, vitamin D supple-

So far this week, we have seen that when opener bids one of a suit and the next player overcalls in another suit (perhaps with a single jump), a double promises length in the unbid major.

Some claim that it shows length in the unbid major and the unbid minor, but that is not true. However, you should have some idea of what you will do if partner rebids in that minor and you do not have support.

But what happens when there are two unbid majors, as in today’s deal?

I like to play that the negative double shows exactly 4-4 in those majors.

(With 5-4, you bid the five-card suit; with 5-5, you respond one spade.)

Following North’s double, South jumps to three no-trump. How does he plan the play after taking West’s diamond-jack lead with his king?

Declarer has seven top tricks: four hearts, one diamond (trick one) and two clubs. Since West seems marked with the diamond ace, East is the danger hand, the one who must be kept off lead. So, declarer should cross to the club king and run the club 10. When this holds, he takes his nine winners, then plays a spade to collect an overtrick. But even if the club finesse loses, declarer is protected from a diamond attack and has time to establish his ninth trick in spades.
