Etiquette around bereaved parents POLL YESTERDAY’S I am one in four mothers who have miscarried. The law doesn’t even recognize that my baby existed because it was only 15 weeks.

As Mother’s Day approaches, I can’t help but think of my baby in heaven. In the SHARE support group, we understand the heartache that haunts us.

On a Facebook page for the DeKalb Area Miscarriage Support Group, we compiled a list of things that friends, family even strangers should or should not say to a grieving parent during Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or any other time.

Such sentiments might be well-intended, but to us they are thorns in our already broken heart.

I hope this list can help others understand the feelings of a bereaved parent, as well as what not to say.

“You can always try again.”

“At least it was early.”

“Well, you’re young.”

“When do you plan on having more?”

“At least you have other kids.”

“They are in a better place.”

“God doesn’t give you more than you can handle.”

“It will happen when it is meant to happen.”

“At least you know you can get pregnant.”

“You need to relax, it happens more than you think.”

“I am so lucky that didn’t happen to me.”

“What did you do to cause the miscarriage?”

“Why can’t you just let it go? It wasn’t even a baby yet.”

Here are some things that are OK to say to a grieving mother: “I am sorry for your loss.”

“Can I give you a hug?”

“Is there something I can do for you?” (And follow through with it!)

“Take all the time you need to grieve.”

“I love you.” (Actions speak louder than words.)

“I am thinking about you guys.” (Remem-

“I don’t know what to say.”

Sometimes words aren’t sufficient, and you can show your support in different ways, such as: Acknowledging the fact that we are actual parents to an angel.

If the baby was named, use it when referring to the miscarriage.

Remember due dates and loss dates.

Just let us cry and cry some more!

Come to memorials and charity walks or remind us on special days that I am a parent.

I know this column is less cheeky and more about a bereaved mother. But miscarriages often are swept under the carpet because most people don’t know what to do and it’s uncomfortable. I hope this advice can help.

The grief that we will carry forever is a constant reminder that strangely we don’t want to forget. As parents, I think we have a need to want to keep our babies lives, at the very least, a memory.

Inevitably, a miscarriage will change the lives of a mother and father. It would be so thoughtful for friends and family to support us during our forever grief.

Please know that you don’t have to go through grief alone. Northwestern Medicine’s SHARE Support Group meets from 7 to 9 p.m. the second Thursday of each month at the Hospice Center, 2727 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

SYCAMORE – Culver’s will donate 10 percent of its sales between 5 and 8 p.m. Thursday to the MS Society.

Tina Brust of Genoa, who’s organized a team for the Walk MS event May 7 in St. Charles, is leading the effort at the restaurant, 1200 DeKalb Ave.

She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2000 and has been helping to raise money for the walk for 18 years, according to a news release.

Walk MS is the seventh-largest fundraising walk event in the U.S., raising about $50 million every year to help stop the disease, according to the National MS Society website.

Mayor Ken Mundy honored for decades of service to Sycamore

SYCAMORE – Mayor Ken Mundy held back tears as he pointed out his 2005 portrait hanging in the Sycamore Center in which he donned the same striped tie and similar blue shirt and dark jacket he wore Monday during his retirement reception.

“I wanted to prove something about this job not aging me,” Mundy told a gathering of friends and colleagues Monday. “It’s a labor of love, and so I’ve never not wanted to go to work, not ever, and that’s a blessing, and I hope you all have that feeling.”

Community members as well as colleagues and friends gathered Monday in the City Council Chambers of the Sycamore Center to shake hands and leave their best wishes with Mundy, who chose not to run for re-election after three terms as Sycamore mayor.

Mundy began his service for the city in 1972, when he was treasurer for the Sycamore Library. He then was Sycamore treasurer from 1981 until he was elected mayor in 2005.

During his time as mayor, Mundy took on a project to read and annotate City Council minutes dating back to 1858.

City Manager Brian Gregory presented Mundy with a plaque honoring 36 years of service to the city, and also presented Mundy with a framed photograph of the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival from the point of view of the City Hall offices.

Gregory said he began working with Mundy in the city’s finance office 16 years ago when Mundy was treasurer.

“He’s always been a great friend,” Gregory said. “He’s been someone that supports me as much as even my parents do, and someone that’s believed in me. And I see that when he talks to young people in our community.”

Sycamore Fire Chief Pete Polarek presented Mundy with a plaque of appreciation from the Sycamore Fire Department.

Polarek said that in his seven years of working with Mundy, he has realized how the mayor is “a big cheerleader for the community” through his support of public services and causes.

“He’s always gone out of his way to spend time with us,” Polarek said. “He rode with the fire department periodically every year while I’ve been here, so

Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, also thanked Mundy for his service to Sycamore in front of reception guests Monday.

Pritchard praised Mundy’s work to keep Sycamore’s budgets balanced and joked about Mundy bringing his exper-

tise to lawmakers in Springfield after his retirement.

“That’s one thing about Ken and Sycamore,” Pritchard said. “You’ve had balanced budgets and you’ve stretched dollars further than they can be stretched, and these are lessons that we need in Springfield right now.”

DeKalb County Board Chairman Mark Pietrowski Jr. said he feels very fortunate to have served in his role while Mundy was mayor, as Mundy was a great example of what a public servant should be.

“I have a strange feeling, though, that he’s still going to be very involved in the community and making Sycamore great,” he said.

Mayor-elect Curt Lang, who is set to be sworn in May 1, said the reception showed how much the people loved having Mundy as their mayor. He also said he has met with Mundy several times since the April 4 election for advice and direction on his new role.

have served 40-plus years and still have a great following,” Lang said. “It’s really an honor to try and fill his shoes.”

After the reception, Mundy said he was reminded of how Sycamore staff, elected officials and community work together as a team, especially getting through challenges like an unpredictable state budget.

“When you pull on the same rope, everybody gets behind and pulls on the same rope, you get the job done,” Mundy said. “And that goes for both opportunities and challenges, because we have both, and there will be more of both. We know that’s certain.”

NIU reacts after man shown at frat using slurs

DeKALB – The chief diversity officer at Northern Illinois University is using a recent video of a man saying a flurry of racial slurs in front of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity house as a teachable moment.

The lesson: If you see something happen you think is racist, report it. Don’t spread vitriol on social media.

“We live in a society where we see things happen every day,” said Vernese Edghill-Walden, who took over the NIU’s Academic Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Department in August 2015. “It’s not so much that it happened. It’s how we educate to make sure it doesn’t happen again. By sharing that video, the fraternity was harmed, and so was the black community.”

In the 10-second video, a white man repeats a racial slur, while pointing off-camera during an April 9 event at the house on 934 Greenbrier Road.

One of Edghill-Walden’s staffers saw the Snapchat video, which has subsequently been shared, tweeted and retweeted more than 50,000 times. The staffer let her know with the university’s online bias reporting system, through which she can see reports instantly.

“We get it the moment they press the ‘send’ button,” she said.

She issued a statement April 11 recommending that all TKE members attend a workshop on diversity and equity by May 1, that her office train all student officers by Oct. 1, and that black leaders on campus and TKE representatives meet.

All parties convened Friday, and EdghillWalden said the meeting was fruitful.

Edghill-Walden said that since her arrival, dialogue – both campuswide and around the community – has been ramped up, and that incoming freshmen are now required to take a course on human diversity as part of a three-year diversity and inclusion plan. She said more than 1,000 students, faculty and staff have received diversity education.

“Every day, if the programs, policies and practices we have help a student or member of staff, feel safe and part of the community, we’re doing our job,” she said. “As long as anyone does not feel like that, our work is not done. Inclusion should be a natural thing we do as a community.”

Otto’s building sale completes Cornerstone property acquisition

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Developers on Friday acquired the final building expected to be demolished to make room for the $7.5 million Cornerstone apartment and commercial building planned for downtown DeKalb.

The vacant building around 112 to 118 E. Lincoln Highway, the former home of Otto’s Niteclub, sold for $300,000 after the acquisition of neighboring properties on 122 S. First St. and 122 E. Lincoln Highway.

In all, developers of the project have

paid $1,064,000 for the four properties they plan to repurpose, records show.

The city of DeKalb is directing a $3 million tax increment financing contribution to the effort – about 40 percent of the projected cost.

City officials have sought to demolish or repair the building, which has experienced significant water and mold damage, through a court order filed last year.

Jason Michnick, DeKalb economic development planner, said that principal project developer John Pappas plans to start mold and asbestos remediation efforts required by the Environmental Protection Agency this week, along with

a rodent abatement program.

“Mr. Pappas is planning on starting demolition May 15, due to one of the property’s tenants that had asked for an extension to get out of their building,” Michnick said.

Jo Ellen Charlton, DeKalb community development director, said that a meeting in coming weeks could help community stakeholders determine where fences will go, where and for how long traffic will need to be shut down, and other variables related to the demolition.

“The city will work proactively to minimize the negative impacts on the

downtown area,” Charlton said.

Pappas also is finalizing work with ComEd to relocate some overhead wires between the Otto’s building and the First Street property, currently the Barb City Bagels building, Charlton added.

Records show that three businesses recently were sold in that area. The Barb City Bagels building sold for $475,000; a property at 122 E. Lincoln Highway housing a Mediterraneo restaurant sold for $188,000; and the former Glitter building at 124 E. Lincoln Highway sold for $101,000. Pappas has said construction of the project shouldn’t take longer than a year.

Genoa woman charged with aggravated DUI Police say she let teen without license drive

SYCAMORE – A 53-year-old Genoa woman who prosecutors say drove drunk and then let a teenager in the car drive without a license Sunday was released Monday on her

own recognizance.

According to court records, Genoa Police responded at 10:30 p.m. to a report of a black 1994 Jeep swerving on state Route 23 near DerTraci

by Line Road.

P o l i c e s a i d T r a c i Carlson Carlson, of the 100 block of Prairie St., eventually parked in a parking lot, then swapped seats with a 15-year-old girl in the car who did not

have a license.

The caller said the erratic driving continued, and police stopped the vehicle and arrested Carlson in the 700 block of Pat Court. A Breathalyzer test administered at the scene showed Carlson had a blood-alcohol content of 0.163 percent, more than twice the legal limit, court records show.

“She talked me into driving,” Carlson said in court Monday.

If convicted of the most serious offense, aggravated driving under the

influence, she could face three to seven years in prison. In September 2015, Carlson was sentenced to public service, court supervision and ordered to be treated for alcoholism after a DUI, court records show.

Carlson is not allowed to drink alcohol as a condition of her bail. She’ll wear a device to monitor her blood-alcohol content.

Her recognizance bond was set at $5,000, and her next court date is 9 a.m.

He received his bachelor’s degree, a sixthyear certificate of advanced study and his doctorate from Northern Illinois University.

He also earned a master’s degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana.

Jim served as a high school teacher, administrator, and a varsity football and basketball coach in Des Moines, IA from 1950 to 1956.

He also served as an elementary and junior high school teacher in DeKalb from 1956 to 1961, and as an elementary school principal in Flossmoor, IL from 1961 to 1967. He served as the associate superintendent of schools in DeKalb from 1967 to 1981 and taught graduate classes at NIU. He was a life member of the National Education Association, the American Association of School Administrators, the University of Illinois Alumni Association, the Northern Illinois University Alumni Association, and the State of Illinois Retired Teachers Association.

After his retirement in 1981, Jim was employed by First National Bank in DeKalb as a financial services officer until 1988.

He was a member of the American Legion, Veteran of Foreign Wars and a life member of

the Marine Corps League. Jim was a former member of the Elks Lodge in DeKalb, as well as Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Epsilon Kappa, Phi Sigma Epsilon and St. Mary’s Church of DeKalb.

Jim proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII, entering services in April 1942.

He was honorably discharged in February 1946, after service in the South Pacific as a sergeant major of Marine Aircraft Group 11.

Man crashes truck into Sycamore Police department

SYCAMORE – A 69-year-old Sycamore man crashed his truck into the Sycamore Police Department building at about 11:39 a.m. Sunday after an apparent medical emergency, Sycamore Police Cmdr. Steve Cook said.

Michael Hampton was driving eastbound on DeKalb Avenue near Washington Place when his 2012 Chevy truck veered to the right, striking street signs, then veered back to the left and into the westbound lane of traffic, Cook said.

The truck finally stopped when it crashed into the front of the police department building after hitting the flag pole, shrubbery and a water utility structure, Cook said.

Hampton was taken via Sycamore ambulance to Kishwaukee Hospital.

He was not injured as a result of the crash, Cook said.

“There was nobody inside of the building that would have been hurt,” Cook said. “There were witnesses who saw [the crash] right away, so the response was almost immediate.”

Cook said Hampton had no signs of impairment from drugs or alcohol, and police are investigating whether a medical emergency caused the crash.

Cook said the truck’s airbag deployed and the truck was towed from the scene. He did not have an estimate of the damage caused to the building.

Hampton was cited for driving on the wrong side of the road, Cook said.

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore City Council unanimously approved the fiscal 2018 budget during its Monday meeting.

The budget will be in effect for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins May 1 and extends through April 30, 2018.

Council members voted Monday to adopt the proposed budget after hosting a public hearing at its previous April 3 meeting. Third Ward Alderman Steve Braser was absent.

Total expenses projected in the budget are $51,892,093.

City Manager Brian Gregory said city staff and council members have talked extensively about each item on the budget since December.

“I think the key is this budget, as presented, especially as we look at the general operating fund, is a balanced budget,” Gregory said.

Expenses from the general fund

are estimated at $16,387,091, while incoming revenue into that fund is expected to be slightly higher at $16,387,375.

These totals reflect police and fire pension contributions passing through the general fund, according to the budget proposal.

The city will not be relying on transferring capital reserves to the general fund to maintain basic services for the first time in five years.

This is part of an initiative to make the general reserve fund financially independent. In 2012, about $728,000 was spent through capital transfers, according to the proposal.

The fiscal 2018 budget also includes funds for capital infrastructure improvements, such as the street maintenance program, sidewalk improvements, the wastewater treatment plant project and improvements to the city’s emergency operations center and building and engineering department buildings.

The general fund is expected to start out at about 39 percent of its total by the beginning of the fiscal year, or $5,888,249. Personnel expenses account for more than half of the overall general fund budget, according to the proposal.

The fiscal 2018 budget does not include any new taxes.

Kaneland students stage ‘Singin’ in the Rain’

editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – Christina Staker, an English teacher at Kaneland High School and director of the school’s upcoming production of “Singin’ in the Rain,” said “the hope” is that it will indeed rain during the famous song and dance scene in the musical.

“Our mission is to try to make it rain onstage,” Staker said.

The technical rehearsal scheduled for this week will be the test for whether they can pull it off when they perform for audiences Friday through Sunday, with tickets available online. A trough system, PVC piping and a baby pool will not only produce rain, they hope, but real puddles for Don Lockwood (played by senior Jarod Kovach) to dance in.

The iconic musical, set in 1920s Hollywood, plays with the movie industry’s transition from silent film to “talkies.”

Silent film star Lina Lamont (played by senior Taylor Heiser) faces a challenge with her nasal and high-pitched voice, which likely would end her career in the changing movie industry.

A solution is found through using the lovely voice of aspiring actress Kathy Selden (played by senior Sabrina Massa), substituting it for Lamont’s squeaky voice. Then Lockwood falls in love with

Selden, and he wants her to have a career of her own, not just being the voice for Lamont. Therein lies the conflict of the story.

“We love this musical,” Staker said.

Staker, who is finishing her fourth year of directing theater at Kaneland, said she loves working with the students involved in productions. The seniors she is working with in the lead roles for “Singin’ in the Rain” were the freshmen she saw in her first year with the theater program.

“It’s a ton of fun to watch them grow and develop over time,” she said. “They wow me every year with some new talent.”

When Massa found out that this year’s production would be “Singin’ in

the Rain,” she set her sights on the role of Kathy Selden. Although she had tap danced when she was young, she knew it was her weakest link, so she took classes for three months in the fall to get ready for the audition.

“She’s a very determined woman who wants to make it on Broadway,” Massa said of her character.

Massa said she related to her character’s determination to achieve her goals.

Although she tried out for the role of Selden, Heiser said that when she was chosen for Lisa Lamont, she instantly fell in love with the character.

“She’s crazy, and she’s not afraid of telling people what she thinks,” she said.

Her biggest challenge was finding a balance between good singing and the nasal tonality of her character’s voice.

Kovach said he started doing theater when he saw how much his older brother, Alec Kovach, enjoyed it.

He said he is enjoying the dancing and singing, and especially likes the songs “Singin’ in the Rain” and “Moses Supposes.”

He also enjoys playing a character who changes over the course of the production. He said Lockwood starts out with a bit of an ego, and a girl “brings him down to earth.” Tickets are now on sale. The production will be staged Friday through Sunday.

Public hearing Tuesday on D-428 transportation fund

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – After a public hearing Tuesday night, DeKalb District’s 428’s school board will vote on whether to transfer more than $4 million from its transportation fund to the education, and operations and maintenance funds.

The transportation fund has a balance of about $4.85 million, and a resolution proposes $4.25 million be moved to the other funds, which are in most need of the funding, according to the resolution.

If the resolution is approved, $4.25 million will be transferred to the education fund, and $2.75 million will be subsequently transferred from the ed fund into the operations and maintenance fund. Under school code, the district can make unrestricted transfers between the three funds.

This transfer of funds was built into the fiscal 2017 budget, records show.

The hearing will be held at 7 p.m. at the District 428 Education Center at 901 S. Fourth St. It will be followed by the regular school board agenda.

CHICAGO – More than 300 state employees, including two lawmakers, are delinquent in paying their taxes for the 2014 calendar year, according to the Illinois Department of Revenue.

Department of Revenue officials told the Chicago Tribune that the 312 state workers are getting their salaries but still haven’t filed returns for calendar year 2014, which were due two years ago.

Each of the employees has already been given a $250 penalty for delinquency and faces an additional penalty equivalent to 10 percent of any taxes

Police torture claims overwhelm Illinois investigation panel

CHICAGO – The Illinois panel tasked with reviewing claims of police torture is overwhelmed with cases and short on funding, especially with the state budget impasse.

A recent law change expanded the Illinois Torture Inquiry and Relief Commission’s jurisdiction beyond claims of torture related to disgraced former Chicago police Cmdr. Jon Burge to anyone convicted in Cook County based on confessions allegedly coerced through torture, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Commission spokesman Michael Theodore said over 180 new claims have been filed since the law went into effect last summer. Commission staff also must investigate over 120 cases filed under the old law.

The commission has sought help from law firms, law school interns and high school students who do clerical work.

“We can’t deal with those numbers the way we’re set up now,” said Rob Olmstead, the commission’s executive director. “I think the Legislature’s intention was laudable. They wanted to bring potential relief to what they thought was a wider pool of people who needed it, and that’s great, but now we need to practically find a way

The lawmakers appear to be the highest-ranking stragglers out of thousands of Illinois workers whom the revenue agency originally identified and contacted after matching W-2 tax forms to payroll records.

The department declined to name any of the workers because tax returns are confidential.

Police: Man killed in shooting at Chicago train platform

CHICAGO – Chicago police say a man is dead after an early-morning shooting on a city train platform.

Authorities say a 33-year-old man was arguing with another person on the Chicago Transit Authority platform around 2:40 a.m. Monday at a Red Line stop on the city’s South Side. Police allege the second person pulled out a handgun and shot the 33-year-old in the head and chest. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Officials tweaking new licenses plates to make more legible

SPRINGFIELD – State officials say that they’re making changes to Illinois’ newly designed license plates to make them easier to read.

The Springfield State Journal-Register reported Secretary of State Jesse White’s office has received complaints.

The new licenses, designed by White’s office, were rolled out in January. White says the old plates were becoming less reflective, making them harder for authorities to see.

The new plates feature Chicago’s skyline, a barn with a windmill, the Capitol and part of Abraham Lincoln’s face.

But some have criticized the new plates. They object to the design combination and say it’s hard to read.

White’s spokesman Dave Druker says future batches of new plates will have darker ink, among other changes.

The office will gradually send replacements for passenger vehicles at no extra cost.

Court rule change on pooled accounts raises $1 million

SPRINGFIELD – A rule change governing legal clients’ funds made by the Illinois Supreme Court in 2015 has generated more than $1 million for legal help for the poor.

The court adjusted a rule dealing with unidentified funds in pooled

tollway employees, nine Department of Employment Security workers, 17 Department of Transportation employees, 24 Department of Children and Family Services workers, 54 Department of Corrections employees and 119 Department of Human Services workers.

The largest agencies tended to have the most tardy tax filers as they did when the newspaper reviewed a similar agency effort done more than 15 years ago.

No Iowa charges to be filed in gun death of Illinois man

CAMANCHE, Iowa – An eastern Iowa prosecutor has decided not to charge a man who shot to death an Illinois resident.

Authorities say 25-year-old Derick Carroll, of Clinton, shot 22-year-old Nicholas Luskey, of Fulton, Illinois, on Feb. 1. Clinton County Attorney Mike Wolf said in a news release the shooting was done in self-defense.

Wolf says Luskey was watching the home of a woman he’d dated several months previously and pulled Carroll from the woman’s car after he blocked them from driving away. Wolf says Carroll and Luskey were struggling when Luskey got his hands around the barrel of a handgun Carroll was legally carrying, so Carroll fired, fearing that if he lost control of it he and the woman would be killed.

Luskey died later at a hospital.

CLEVELAND – In a rambling video, Steve Stephens said, “I snapped, I just snapped.” But as the manhunt dragged on Monday for the man accused of posting Facebook footage of himself killing a retiree, police were unable to explain what set him off.

“Only Steve knows that,” Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said as authorities posted a $50,000 reward for Stephens’ capture in the shooting of Robert Godwin Sr., a 74-yearold former foundry worker.

In the video, Stephens blamed a former girlfriend he had lived with, saying he woke up last week and “couldn’t take it anymore.” But in a statement Monday, the woman shed little light on what might have gone wrong and said Stephens was good to her and her children.

As for the shooting victim, Godwin appeared to have been selected at random, gunned down while picking up aluminum cans Sunday afternoon after spending Easter with some of his children.

A manhunt that started in Cleveland’s gritty east side expanded rapidly into a nationwide search for Stephens, a 37-year-old job counselor who worked with teens and young adults, police said.

“He could be nearby. He could be far away or anywhere in between,” FBI agent Stephen Anthony said.

Law enforcement officials said his cellphone signal was last detected on Sunday afternoon in Erie, Pennsylvania, about 100 miles east of Cleveland.

Police reported getting dozens and dozens of tips, and nine schools in Philadelphia were locked down Monday while authorities investigated possible sightings of Stephens. But they said there was no sign he was actually there.

Some of those who know Stephens described him as pleasant and kind, while some said he had a gambling problem. He filed for bankruptcy two years ago.

In another video posted to Facebook, Stephens said that he gambled away everything and that he and his girlfriend had planned to marry but didn’t, without saying why.

“He got along with everybody, so it’s just unbelievable what happened,” said Alexis Lee, a friend who saw Stephens last week.

The police chief said: “We are not going to pinpoint a specific thing and say this is what triggered this, because we don’t know.”

Godwin’s daughter said he was killed while collecting cans in a plastic shopping bag.

“Not because he needed the money, it was just something he did,” 52-year-old Debbie Godwin said. “That’s all he was doing. He wasn’t harming anyone.”

She said her father, who had 10 children, was a gentle man with nothing mean about him.

DeKALB – It was business as usual at the local Sears store, and it will continue to be.

A steady flow of customers who rolled in Friday morning browsed the sort of products you’d expect them to on a beautiful day: lawnmowers and grills.

The store’s been getting a lot of calls and emails asking whether they’ll close. Sears Holdings has gone from 3,400 U.S. stores and 370 more in Canada in 2006 to just 1,400 at the end of January – all in the U.S. The local Sears, however, is not part of Sears Holdings. It’s a Sears Hometown and Outlet Store, part of the publicly traded corporation that separated from Sears Holdings Corp. in 2012.

A scandal of sexual abuse

The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Haiti, one of the world’s longest-running such deployments and the only one in the Americas, will end in a few months, but not before reckoning with a fresh scandal.

A U.N. battalion of Nepalese peacekeepers in 2010 introduced a lethal strain of cholera to Haiti, where it has since killed more than 9,000 people and infected hundreds of thousands. Now, The Associated Press reports that at least 134 U.N. peacekeepers from Sri Lanka took part in a sex ring in Haiti that victimized nine children, the youngest only 12, from 2004 to 2007. The report should serve notice that U.N. peacekeeping operations worldwide are badly in need of reform and oversight.

The sex ring was part of what appears to have been a broader pattern of sexual exploitation and abuse, along with impunity, that has marked the U.N. mission in Haiti since it began in 2004 after an elected president was overthrown. The AP turned up hundreds of allegations of abuse in Haiti, many of them coldblooded and horrific, carried out by peacekeepers from Bangladesh, Brazil, Jordan, Nigeria, Pakistan, Uruguay and Sri Lanka. In very few cases did the troops face discipline.

The U.N. announcement last week that the mission in Haiti would be wound down over the coming six months was unrelated to the AP’s nearly simultaneous revelations of sex abuse by peacekeepers. The troops’ withdrawal – they’ll be replaced by a much smaller contingent of police trainers – reflects both the country’s progress toward stabilization after successful elections and financial pressure to trim peacekeeping operations, owing partly to the Trump administration’s threat to cut U.S. contributions to the multinational organization by hundreds of millions of dollars.

Even when the mission in Haiti is wrapped up, the United Nations will have more than a dozen peacekeeping missions worldwide; Haiti is by no means the only place peacekeepers have treated as a sexual playground. The U.N. must insist, as a precondition for accepting peacekeeping troops, that contributing countries will court-martial and punish soldiers who commit abuse.

Haiti may have been especially vulnerable to exploitation by peacekeepers as the hemisphere’s poorest nation, leveled by a devastating earthquake in 2010 and a hurricane last year. Some children and teens reportedly were raped outright; others engaged in what victims called “survival sex,” coerced into trading their bodies for scraps of food or a few dollars.

The U.N. insists it is making progress in holding peacekeeper-contributing countries to account; it said much the same thing a decade ago.

Cut college costs to fix student debt crisis America’s younger generation is staggering under student debt loads that will alter the way they participate in traditional American society as they age.

Total student debt now stands at $1.4 trillion, more than outstanding vehicle loans and credit card obligations, and second only to mortgages.

On average, college students are accumulating debt at a rate of $8,250 for every year they are in school. Coming out of college already burdened with loans that promise to consume a large chunk of their earnings for decades ahead, the graduates are likely to encounter difficulties when they finance homes. They also are more likely to put off starting families.

The crisis has escalated since 2003, when outstanding student loans totaled $240 billion. Driving the skyrocketing debt is soaring college tuition, and the two share a symbiotic relationship.

Justin Haskins of the Heartland Institute writes that since the federal government first expanded its role in student lend-

ing under former President Bill Clinton in 1993, college costs have risen by 190 percent.

Since 2008, average tuition has risen by 25 percent.

As the government took over responsibility for student lending – former President Barack Obama drove private lenders nearly out of the market – conditions for getting loans eased, and were unlinked from financial need.

The federal government basically guarantees that any student, regardless of income, can have access to any college or university, public or private, without regard to whether the student can afford the tuition cost without hefty loans. This has encouraged students to choose schools they might have otherwise passed on, covering the costs with massive loans.

But more significantly, it has freed universities to raise tuition at will, knowing students can get loans to cover the rising costs.

As a result, universities have sidestepped the fiscal reckoning of most other institutions and

remain aloof to hard financial realities.

A first step to reversing the debt trend is to return lending to the private marketplace. Private lenders would put in place more realistic screening for issuing loans, and be more attuned to the borrower’s ability to repay the money.

Obama-era policies limited repayment to 10 percent of a graduate’s annual income, with up to 25 years to repay the loan.

But that insures the student debt will be around their necks until they reach middle age. Trump is promising to shorten the payback period to 15 years by requiring payments of 12.5 percent of income.

Of course the real solution is to hold tuition costs in check.

And that starts with bringing greater accountability to universities, particularly in the public realm.

Graduates should leave college full of bright dreams for the future, not with nightmarish debt loads.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

VIEWS Michael Barone Their high-school class of 1964 had the highest test scores in history. Compared with their parents, they attended college more and served in the military less. All seven presidents born between 1908 and 1924 were, in some form, in the military during World War II. Two of the 1946 presidents never were in the military at all, and one served in the Texas Air National Guard.

Two were the sons of men highly successful in quite different fields.

One’s father was a mysterious figure who died before he was born. But all three graduated from prestigious universities – Georgetown University and Yale Law School, Yale University and Harvard Business School, and The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Of course, each was different. Bill Clinton was a political prodigy, with the capacity to understand public policy and its political implications seemingly off the top of his head. He started his political career early, running the 1972 George McGovern campaign in Texas and almost upsetting a Republican congressman in 1974. In 1976, he was elected Arkansas attorney general,

and in 1979, at 32, he became the state’s governor.

Clinton had luck, and with his dazzling political skills, he took advantage of it. When his career seemed to be winding down – he was renominated and re-elected by lackluster margins in 1990 – he took a chance on running for president against an incumbent who had started the year with 91 percent approval. That guaranteed weak Democratic competition, and Ross Perot’s surprise candidacy, which dislodged George H.W. Bush, and surprise (and temporary) withdrawal boosted Clinton.

As president, Clinton had his stumbles and unique disgrace. He was disorganized and undisciplined, but he was also constantly adapting and revising, rewriting State of the Union addresses on his ride to the Capitol. The public mostly approved.

George W. Bush was, in some ways, the opposite. After an unsuccessful House race in 1978, he mostly laid aside politics. After his father lost to Clinton, he seems to have believed that God put him in the way of running for president, and he strove to tutor himself to do the best job possible.

His strength was steadfastness, his weakness (as always, a strength overdone) stubbornness. He was agonizingly slow on midcourse correction, notably on Iraq, but also on Social Security reform.

Bush’s political strategy, designed to keep Texas from being the next California, worked, but it gave him only small electoral vote majorities. When his job approval dropped, between 2006 and 2008, his party took the worst thumpings it’d had in 25 years.

Donald Trump’s strategy followed not George W. Bush’s but Ross Perot’s. He bet that his trademark stands on trade and immigration (different from every president’s since Dwight Eisenhower) – though costing him votes of college graduates in California, Arizona, Texas and Georgia – would gain him enough votes from non-college-educated people to win.

The bet paid off. Trump did worse than George W. Bush had done in those states, but it cost him zero electoral votes. Swings by non-college-educated whites in Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa and Maine gave him 100 electoral votes twice won

by Barack Obama.

Was that shrewd insight or blind luck? Either way, it perhaps owed something to Perot (born in 1930), who helped make each of these boomers president.

Area’s low election turnout is a shame

I have never missed an opportunity to vote to this day.

I voted absentee from 1966-’69 while I was in the U.S. Army and out of the state. It did not matter what the election was for, I felt a duty and responsibility to vote.

Anyone who doesn’t vote has no right to complain about what our elected officials do.

Let me thank and congratulate all those people who took a huge chunk out of their lives to run for public office.

Hopefully in the next election, registered voters will flood the voting booths and we’ll see percentages in the 70 percent-plus range.

It really takes so little time to vote.

Besides our direct care volunteers, who bring comfort through visits with our patients and families, the many other volunteers provide support to the hospice staff by sharing their time through baking, performing office work, deliv-

ering supplies, helping with mailings, sewing and assisting with community health fairs. We are extremely fortunate to have over 2,900 hours donated this past year alone.

Most often people have known someone who has benefited from hospice services and join our staff with a desire and common goal: to assist people to live with dignity and hope in ways that best meet their needs while coping with end-of-life issues. We could not do the essential work of hospice care without our dedicated, compassionate volunteers.

With the inauguration of Donald Trump this year, we have now had, for the first time in our history, three American presidents who were born in the same year. There have been three pairs of presidents born in the same year – the very dissimilar John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, in 1767; Richard Nixon and his surprise successor, Gerald Ford, in 1913; and Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush, in 1924.

Now we’ve had three presidents who were born in calendar year 1946: Bill Clinton (in August), George W. Bush (in July) and Donald Trump (in June). Note that all three were born just a little more than nine months after V-J Day. (For younger readers, that was the end of World War II.) The U.S. Census Bureau considers 1946 to be the first year of the baby boom, a remarkable and unpredicted sudden surge in births in the United States and numerous other countries.

It continued until 1964, which means Barack Obama, who was born in 1961, is also a part of the baby-boom generation.

The leading edge of the baby-boom generation, the oldest members of an enormous age cohort, has made its mark on American life. Growing up in an era of postwar conformity, they insisted on doing their own thing.

They listened to and played rock ’n’ roll, the first adolescent music genre.

They participated in student riots.

He went to third on an infield single by Kam Dransfeldt when the throw to first went awry, but was called out at home trying to score on a wild pitch.

“It looked to me like he scored,” Kein said. “But, you can’t just look at one play. We had plenty of other chances to score and we didn’t get the hit we needed.”

Sycamore added three insurance runs in the top of the fifth, getting RBI singles by Mizgalski and Gage Armstrong and a sacrifice fly by Jacob Cavanaugh.

Trailing 5-1, Morris loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Carlsen got a grounder back to him for a force at home and a grounder to short to end the game.

“Connor Swanson, man, that’s the thing I told him at the beginning of the year – last year he threw some innings for us, but it was the confidence that was lacking,” Veliz said. “He threw hard, but he was all over the place.

MORRIS – During the course of a baseball season, a team is going to have its share of ups-and-downs. For the Morris baseball team, the past three games have trended toward the down cycle, with Monday’s 5-1 loss to Sycamore open the Northern Illinois Big 12 season extending a losing streak to three.

“We knew coming in that Sycamore always puts the ball in play hard,” Morris coach Todd Kein said. “They have done that for years and years.

You know you are going to give up three, four, five runs every time you play them. It’s just the way they play.

Their outs are productive and they make you make plays.”

The game began with Sycamore’s Logan Riley reaching second on a throwing error on a ball hit to short.

Zach Carlsen followed with a walk and winning pitcher Jack Mizgalski singled to right to load the bases. Another single by James Marcinkowski scored Riley for a 1-0 lead before anyone was out and the bases were still loaded.

Morris pitcher Jacob Overbeck then induced Tyler Didio to ground into a double play to second, scoring Carlsen, before striking out Jacob Cavanaugh to end the threat.

“We shouldn’t have been in that situation to begin with because of the error and the walk to the first two guys,” Kein said. “But to get out of bases loaded and nobody out with only two runs is pretty good. We could have been looking at a four or five-run inning there.”

It was one of those half-innings that had a bright and dark side for each team.

Redbird’s Brown wins triple jump at invite W

The Summit League 2015 Women’s Field Athlete of the Year has flashed the form she showed two seasons ago.

DeKalb graduate Jasmine Brown won the women’s triple jump April 8 at the Redbird Invitational.

The Western Illinois junior’s jump was 40 feet, 101/4 inches. The Leathernecks finished fourth overall as a team.

She picked up the win against Illinois Club on Thursday when she threw five scoreless innings and struck out three.

••• Sophomore Cam Godinsky is 0-4 with a save for Carroll. The Sycamore grad has made four starts in 13 appearances. He’s pitched five innings in relief, striking out four and surrendering three earned runs.

His teammate Jake Langford, a G-K grad, led off both games of Saturday’s doubleheader split against North Central. The junior shortstop was 1 for 4 with a run and a walk in a 17-7 second-game win. In the 7-2 loss in the opener, he was 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Morris officials ponder switching conference ties

roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When it comes to high schools and conference affiliation, change has been one of the few constants over the past couple of decades.

Given school enrollment increases and decreases, some districts are no longer compatible with the rest of their conferencemembers.

With Seneca announcing that it is leaving the Interstate Eight Conference, the I-8 sent out invitations to other schools that it thought might have an interest in joining. One of those came to Morris Community High School, and the administration and school board have begun to discuss the possibility of a move. With Seneca’s departure, the Interstate Eight will consist of Coal City, Peotone, Sandwich, Streator, Manteno, ReedCuster, Wilmington, Westmont, Lisle, Plano and Herscher.

Such a switch would not be unprecedented, as Morris left the Southwest Prairie Conference to join the NCIC and then the Northern Illinois Big 12 in the past few years. Current Northern Illinois Big 12 members include DeKalb, Geneseo, LaSalle-Peru, Kaneland, Morris, Ottawa, Rochelle, Sterling, Sycamore and Yorkville. Streator switched over from the Northern Illinois Big 12 to the Interstate

Eight a couple of years ago.

Morris Principal Kelly Hussey let it be known that a Morris move to the Interstate Eight is certainly not etched in stone.

“It’s definitely still in the infant stages,” he said. “We got the invitation and took it to the school board,” he said. “Even if, after doing all our research, we decide to accept the offer, we are not sure that the I-8 will accept us. There may be another school that they sent an invitation to that fits what they want better than we do. Or they might decide in the end to keep their numbers at 11 schools.

“It’s something for us to look at and consider, though.”

Hussey noted that there would be a significant cut in travel time and expense if the Redskins were to join the Interstate Eight, which benefits more than just the school district’s bottom line.

“We have to look at everything,” he said. “Not only the expense, but the time aspect of it. There are weeknight games or events that aren’t getting kids home until very late, and they still have homework to do.

“And, like now in the spring when a lot of athletic events start at 4:30 p.m., the kids have to get out of class early because of the distance they have to travel, and they are missing face time with their teachers. We have to take all of that into consideration and come up

with the best decision for everyone involved – the kids, their parents and our staff and administration.”

From a numbers standpoint, the enrollment of the largest school in the Interstate Eight, Streator, is 947. The average enrollment of schools in the Northern Illinois Big 12, excluding Morris, is 1,268, nearly 25 percent larger than the biggest in the I-8. The longest trip for Morris in the Interstate Eight checks in at 51 miles to Westmont, as opposed to an average trip of 57 miles in the Northern Illinois Big 12.

For Morris athletic director Jeff Johnson, the decision comes down to much more than just level of competition.

“A lot of these I-8 schools are growing in enrollment and catching up to us,” he said. “If you look at our regionals the last few years in a lot of sports, those are the teams we are running up against.

Coal City, Peotone, Manteno, Plano. The bigger schools in that conference are growing and will probably catch up to us soon.

“We would go from being the second-smallest school in our conference to being the second-largest in the I-8. But, that works both ways. Our boys basketball team won a regional this year with not a very good conference record, but playing the teams we played in the conference made us battle-tested when the postseason came.”

Holland’s latest bad outing against the Yankees (he’s 1-7 lifetime with a 6.97 ERA against them) was more than the lagging Sox’s offense could withstand.

Davidson (.355, three homers, 10 RBIs) has been a bright spot behind Avisail Garcia (.447), and that’s about it.

A touted prospect and first-round supplemental pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2009, Davidson always thought it would be this way when the D-backs called him up to the majors for 31 games in 2013, so there wasn’t much

satisfaction or sense of achievement at the time.

“Every year you move up – low A, high A, Double-A, Triple-A, Futures Game, big leagues,’’ Davidson said. “It happened so fast, I expected to be in the big leagues for a while. That, obviously, didn’t happen.”

After a trade to the Sox for closer Addison Reed in December 2013, Davidson struggled mightily at Triple-A Charlotte, batting .199 and .2013 with a combined 355 strikeouts those two years. There were enough flashes of power – 20 and 23 home runs – to keep his hope alive, albeit dim ones.

But his confidence was torn to shreds.

“It was a hard couple of years,” Davidson said.

It’s early and the sample size is small, but it hasn’t looked as hard through the Sox’s first 12 games.

CHICAGO – Anthony Rizzo had a two-word answer to questions about the “slow start” the Cubs are off to in 2017.

“It’s baseball,” the first baseman said before Monday night’s 6-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field.

Rizzo then expanded on those “It’s baseball, and you go with that all the time,” he said. “When things are going really good or things are going really bad, it’s the game of baseball. We go out every day and play the best we can and the hardest we can.”

The Cubs are up against their 25-6 start of last year, which was the beginning of the ride to a World Series championship. The loss to the Brewers was the Cubs’ fourth in a row and dropped them to 6-7.

“People are going to come in here gunning for us, for sure,” said starting pitcher John Lackey (1-2), who pitched six innings and gave up seven hits and four runs. “We’re world champs, and people want to come and play well. And we’re going to have to match that intensity and have to play better.”

Manager Joe Maddon said he agreed with Rizzo’s assessment.

“It’s pretty much like he said,” Maddon answered. “I totally agree with that. When you go 6-6 in the middle of the year, nobody notices. It’s a nice road trip at times. You go on a 10-day road

The Hinckley-Big Rock girls soccer team jumped out to a big lead early and then held on for a 4-3 win over Timothy Christian on Monday at home.

The Royals (2-5-3) led 3-0 at halftime behind two goals from Hannah Mueller and a third from Tori Prellberg.

Sam Noble assisted on Mueller’s first goal, which came midway through the first half.

Timothy Christian made things interesting with two goals of its own in the second half, but Avery DeBernardi provided an insurance goal for the Royals with less than six minutes remaining.

The Royals will host Lisle at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

BOSTON – Fred Hoiberg once again chose to take the high road.

Then again, maybe it’s the only road the Bulls coach knows.

Not that it was time for a middle-finger moment from Hoiberg on Monday, but he definitely could have thumped the chest a bit more than he did.

Through his first two seasons on the job, there’s been way more criticism than praise cast in his direction – rightfully so in some ways – but the amount in which that criticism has come, and the viciousness that has affected his family, well, even All-Star guard Jimmy Butler had a problem with it.

“It isn’t fair, but this game isn’t fair; life isn’t fair,’’ Butler said, when asked about the treatment of his coach locally and nationally. “Yeah, he’s gotten a lot better. He’s getting to know these guys extremely well. He’s studying the game and knowing where to get guys the ball, where they’re comfortable.

“It’s been a learning curve, but we’re here now and we’re still getting better, so he’s doing a tremendous

job.’’

Not the popular opinion shared by many, especially after an ESPN round table voted Hoiberg the worst coach in the NBA three weeks ago.

24 Tips for keeping glucose levels steady Dear Doctors: I’m trying to lower my blood glucose levels, but I have a sweet tooth. What raises blood glucose more – the sugar from fruit, or foods with refined sugar? Is a healthy diet the only way to keep blood glucose steady?

Dear Reader: Managing your levels of blood glucose, which is the measurement of how much of a certain sugar is dissolved in the blood, is important to good health. Glucose, which comes from the foods we eat, is a major source of energy to cells throughout the body.

However, blood glucose levels that remain consistently high can lead to a variety of health problems, including prediabetes, a condition that frequently leads to Type 2 diabetes.

Blood glucose starts its journey in the form of carbohydrates, which are the main nutrients in foods like bread, pasta, rice, fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains and some dairy products. When we eat these foods, the digestive process frees the sugars within the food and makes them easily available to the body.

Glucose, the smallest sugar molecule, moves from your small intestine into your blood. There, it is distributed throughout the body to provide energy to the cells.

To get from the blood into the cells, glucose needs the help of insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, a long, flattened gland that sits behind the stomach.

As your question notes, not all foods release glucose in the same amounts or at the same rate. Foods such as sugary breakfast cereals, pastries and candy are basically glucose bombs. But naturally sweet foods such as apples, strawberries or yams, which contain carbohydrates but also are high in fiber, release glucose more slowly.

It’s a little confusing, we know. Fortunately, a handy tool known as the glycemic index has taken much of the guesswork out of maintaining healthy blood glucose levels.

The glycemic index, or GI, ranks each food relative to how it will affect your blood glucose.

Foods high on the GI release their sugars more rapidly, which can cause blood sugar to spike. Foods lower on the scale release their energy more gradually, and blood glucose levels remain steady.

Interestingly, research has shown that exercise affects blood glucose levels. When you increase your amount of activity, your body works harder and your muscles’ demand for glucose increases. The insulin your body produces becomes more effective as well. The key here, as with diet, is moderation.

A brisk walk, a dance class, an aerobic bout of house cleaning or yard work – any of these can add balance to the blood glucose equation. The good news is even a little bit of regular exercise, say, 30 minutes three times a week, also will help your heart, lungs and even your mood.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY am a full-time nanny for a famJeanne ily with two chilPhillips dren, ages 7 and 9. The mother is wonderful, and so are the kids. But the father, who is absent due to work travel most of the time, teaches his children attitudes I strongly disagree with. It is not often I must interact with him, but when I have, he says hateful things about people who are gay, obese or poor.

The children have now begun to repeat these comments, pointing out large people when we are in public, or saying nasty things about the homeless we see as we drive. I try to combat this hatred by sharing words of love or acceptance.

The mom is mortified when I tell her the things her children have said. She doesn’t share the same attitudes as her husband, but she works a lot and isn’t around to discuss things like this with her kids in the moment.

I feel like part of the family because I spend so much time with the children. But I wonder if I am overstepping my boundaries by admonishing them for saying things their father has taught them to believe. Is it my place to teach the kids lessons about acceptance that are contrary to what he tells them? – Nanny in Tampa Dear Nanny: The person to whom you should be addressing this question is the children’s mother. Dear Abby: I am a 29-year-old female. I’m not married and have no kids. I’ve been dating a man who is 14 years older for two years now.

He has no children.

We have talked about marriage and having children, but recently I found out he has no retirement savings. This scares me because I’m thinking about the future. If something were to happen to him and we were married, I’d be stuck with his debt.

I am at a loss. I don’t want to be the snobby woman who kicks him when he’s down and leaves him, but at the same time, I don’t understand why he hasn’t planned for retirement.

The negative double was devised in 1957 by Al Roth and Tobias Stone.

They called it a Sputnik double because the Russians had just launched their satellite. The Roth-Stone version was very loosely defined, but was quickly modified and renamed to show an unbid major. (Why negative?

I assume in contrast to a positive double for penalty.)

Look at the North hand in the diagram. After partner opens one diamond and West overcalls one spade, what would you do?

Without a negative double, presumably North would respond three no-trump, but that contract would have no chance. Instead, North makes a negative double to show four hearts (or five, if he has insufficient values for a two-heart response).

South rebids two hearts, and North jumps to four hearts, despite the weakness of his trumps.

What happens after West leads the spade queen?

South has four possible losers: one spade (on the third round), two hearts and one club. He can afford to play one round of trumps, but when West takes the trick and returns another spade, declarer must win on the board, cash the diamond ace, overtake the diamond queen with his king and play the diamond jack, discarding the spade five from the dummy. Then South leads another trump. Shortly, he will claim, having lost only two hearts and one club.

Did you notice a defensive point?

Assuming declarer starts with a heart to his jack, if West wins smoothly with his ace and leads a second spade, he might lull declarer into a false sense of security. If South immediately repeats the heart finesse, he goes down.
