Hello, DeKalb County: What’s your story? POLL

Hi. I’m new to the community. Here’s what I’m not new to: community journalism.

Now, there’s a term with a lot of meanings.

When elected officials misstep, when people do nefarious things, when tragedies happen, community journalism is about informing the readers as quickly as possible, with the most comprehensive, accurate information possible.

When we feel strongly about an issue, and when important happenings are coming down the pike, community journalism puts those things on its readers’ radar, so they can not only be informed, but get involved, if they so choose.

They should, by the way, if they feel as strongly as we do.

To me, perhaps one of the biggest parts of community journalism is pulling back the curtain to show you who we are. We live here, too.

Well, my family will be here soon. Here’s a little about us.

My wife, Kayla, is a journalist, as well, although having 3-year-old twins, Anna and Elise, has relegated her to freelancing. In addition to a part-time job as the secretary at a local Methodist church, she’s been teaching fitness classes and hopes to get her personal training certification soon. Our girls are the best things we’ve ever done, plain and simple. I can’t wait for you to meet them, so if anyone knows of a house going on the market, don’t be a stranger.

At the moment, I’m making the breathtaking two-hour, 15-minute round-trip commute between here and Sterling, where I worked for Sauk Valley Media for more than five years – two in sports, and more than three as an editor on the news side.

While there, I covered education, which leads me to one thing I cherish about community journalism: While we’ll always have to be watchdogs first and foremost, it also behooves us to celebrate our community’s achievements, its stories, its unsung heroes.

education, where a lot of great things are happening, but often get overshadowed by perennial issues such as funding woes and mandated assessments.

At the outset, as I take over for our former news editor, Brett Rowland, who took a promotion to the same position with the Northwest Herald, I’m sliding into his beat, cops and courts, as well. I’m also going to write business stories for our Marketplace section.

But wait. There’s more. A lot more.

In this industry, and especially in markets of this size, reporters are, to a degree, general assignment reporters.

So I’m looking forward to writing a lot of feature stories, as well. I’m a big fan of them because everyone has a story, and so often they resonate with others. Sometimes, they can even inspire others. That’s when this community journalism thing can get mighty powerful.

I’ve got a story, too. Lots of them, in fact.

When you see me out and about, please introduce yourself. Help me get to know this community I’m excited to join.

Claims law enforcement conspired to frame him for 1957 murder

ROCKFORD – Days after a DeKalb County judge declared him innocent in the 1957 kidnapping and murder of Maria Ridulph, Jack McCullough has filed a lawsuit against state and local authorities accusing them of framing him.

McCullough’s wrongful conviction lawsuit, filed in federal court in Rockford, accuses Sycamore, state and Seattle police of conspiring with DeKalb County prosecutors to frame McCullough, a Seattle man who lived in Sycamore at the time of Maria’s disappearance.

McCullough’s attorney, Russell Ainsworth, said the quick turnaround was essential.

“It’s been a year since Jack was released from prison, and we wanted to get justice for Jack,” said Ainsworth, a Chicago-based attorney with the civil rights firm Loevy & Loevy. “He’s 77 years old. He can’t wait forever.”

McCullough was convicted Sept. 14, 2012, by Kane County Associate Judge James Hallock in a trial in which original police and FBI reports about the crime were barred and witnesses relied on 55-year-old memories about the events of that night.

DeKalb County Judge William Brady vacated that ruling in April 2016 and ordered McCullough freed from prison. Brady ruled Wednesday that McCullough’s request for a certificate of innocence in the case should be granted, paving the way for the lawsuit.

The suit names 15 defendants in Illinois and Washington state, including Illinois State Police Special Agent Brion Hanley, who was named the Illinois State Police’s Officer of the Year in 2013 for his work as lead investigator on the case.

Former State’s Attorney Clay Campbell also is named, as is DeKalb County and the cities of Sycamore and Seattle.

“Although exonerated, Mr. McCullough must now attempt to resume his life despite the horrors he endured while imprisoned for a crime he did not commit,” the lawsuit states.

“Plaintiff was due to retire, but those efforts have been hampered by his wrongful conviction. In addition, Plaintiff has lost the precious time

McCullough accuses police and prosecutors of fabricating evidence.

He said they created a false timeline for the crime in order to explain away the fact that FBI investigators’ reports indicated he had placed a collect call from Rockford to his home at 6:57 p.m. the night Maria disappeared.

He said they created a biased photo lineup leading to false identification by the only witness to the crime, Kathy Sigman, who was playing with Maria the night she was abducted near the intersection of Center Cross Street and Archie Place.

McCullough’s suit also claims Hanley and others sought false testimony from jailhouse informants in exchange for favors, and then told them to lie about the arrangement.

Those three points also were cited

by Brady when he ruled McCullough should be freed from prison.

The suit claims the prosecution, under then-State’s Attorney Clay Campbell, did all this to gain fame and fast-track careers by securing a conviction in the case 55 years after the crime.

Authorities have said they cannot comment on matters in litigation.

Ainsworth said defendants typically have 60 days to respond to a lawsuit. After that, discovery will begin.

A litany of subpoenas will be ordered.

He said a successful lawsuit of this sort typically brings the plaintiff $1 million to $2 million for each year of imprisonment, but he claims McCullough’s circumstances make his case unique.

“We’re talking about justice for a man ripped from his home and being put in prison, where he very well could have died,” Ainsworth said.

McCullough, who was transferred from DeKalb County custody to the Menard Correctional Center after he was sentenced to life in prison, was stabbed in the eye by a cellmate while he slept, the suit says.

McCullough was born John Cherry on Nov. 27, 1939, in Belfast, Ireland.

He was freed after former DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack, relying on FBI reports about the crime and having located records that showed the phone that McCullough was believed to have called from was in the downtown Rockford post office, concluded McCullough was in Rockford at the time of Maria’s disappearance and couldn’t have committed the crime.

State law entitles McCullough to compensation for wrongful imprisonment; he can receive as much as $85,350 because he spent less than five years in prison.

Kids, families celebrate at Easter weekend event

Shaw Media correspondent Local children of all ages and their families came out to enjoy the DeKalb Park District’s Breakfast with the Bunny and Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday at Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

The event began with a breakfast catered by Fatty’s Catering Group of DeKalb and photos with the Easter Bunny in the Hopkins Park Terrace Room, and continued with the annual Easter Egg Hunt on the park grounds.

Scott deOliveira, superintendent of marketing for the DeKalb Park District, said he was pleased with the event, especially its opening breakfast.

“We were really happy with it,” deOliveira said. “It was a great opportunity for the parents to get photos with the Easter Bunny. And of course, [breakfast is] a great start to the morning before the Easter Egg Hunt.”

The Easter Egg Hunt also served as a fundraiser for Safe Passage, and the team from the domestic violence and sexual assault prevention center said it appreciated being invited to partici-

“I think we’ve already gotten an outpouring of support,” Safe Passage Prevention Director Sarah Slevenas said. “I think it’s so wonderful that the park district invites us to come. It shows that they really value our services.”

Slevenas said the team from Safe Passage also enjoyed seeing locals from the community.

“It’s a nice way to interact and provide information about our services in a noncrisis situation,” she said.

Local residents enjoyed the opportunity to take photos of their children

with the Easter Bunny and let their children participate in the egg hunt.

“Everything was very organized,” said Valerie Rangel, 34, of DeKalb. “I like the idea that they divide the eggs.

It was a good idea.”

Kris Carlson, 36, of DeKalb said he enjoyed getting together with local families and watching his son meet the Easter Bunny at the breakfast.

“I think the opportunity to get together with family here in town,” Carlson said. “And the opportunity for Gunner (Carlson’s son) to interact with the Easter Bunny.”

Local children appeared to enjoy finding eggs at the egg hunt on the park grounds. Addison Escamillo, 3, of DeKalb said she liked that all of the eggs had candy in them.

“I got eggs with treats in them,” Addison said.

Other children expressed enjoyment at being able to help their new friends find eggs after reaching the eight-egg limit.

“I like that there was a limit of eight eggs,” said Elenor Gradaromero, 11, of DeKalb. “So when you got your eggs, you could give them to other people.”

DeKALB – In order to get public input on active transportation, the DeKalb Sycamore Area Transportation Study will hold a series of open houses to identify needs of people who might not rely on motor vehicles for travel.

Jessica Hyink, DeKalb assistant transportation planner, said the aim is to get a vast number of viewpoints on active transportation, which is any means of human-powered transportation, such as walking or cycling, as a means of travel.

“Active transportation affects people of all ages, and we want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to let us know in some way what their needs are,” Hyink said. “These first open houses are really to let us know what people want in the community, such as where they want to be able to bike or where they have issues crossing the street.”

The first open house will be at 3 p.m.

Tuesday at the Sycamore Public Library, and the second will be at 6 p.m. at the DeKalb Public Library. The last will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Northern Illinois University Holmes Student Center.

Instead of a typical public comment

format, Hyink said the events will be more activity-based.

One such activity will be for participants to write their suggestions on leaf-shaped pieces of paper that will be attached to a large tree poster. Another will be maps on which people can mark with stickers where they want to see bike trails, sidewalk improvements or other community needs.

“We will use this information to prioritize infrastructure improvements that people want,” Hyink said. “We have limited funding, so we want to maximize what we can do for the community with what we have.”

Mark Schuller, an NIU associate professor with the Center for Nongovernmental Organization Leadership and Development, has a class whose students have been involved with active transportation plans and will assist with the open houses.

“It’s like they are interning with DSATS under Hyink’s direction,” Schuller said. “This class is a nonprofit, community engagement class, and they are basically consultants, but they have been actively involved with dialogue on active transportation.”

Once a development plan has been made, there will be a second series of open houses in the fall to see whether DSATS staff covered the

SPRINGFIELD – In a two-year stalemate over how to drag Illinois out of a $5 billion deficit and get on top of $13 billion in past-due bills, Gov. Bruce Rauner has been under pressure to show where he would cut the spending he says is necessary.

But lost in the political cat-andmouse between the Republican governor and the Democrats who control the Legislature are real spending reductions that Rauner proposed in his annual budget plan two months ago.

According to an analysis by The Associated Press, there at least 40 areas the first-term executive proposes eliminating or significantly reducing.

“We need to look to programs that serve the most vulnerable and to programs that serve the entire state instead of a specific geographic region, a specific population or a specific vendor,” said Scott Harry, Rauner’s budget director. “They’re important programs. But tough choices have to be made.”

Although the cuts are enough to shut down a single program or service, however, their overall effect on state spending would be minimal. All

New United policy: Crews can’t displace seated passengers

CHICAGO – United Airlines is changing a company policy and will no longer allow crew members to displace customers already onboard an airplane.

The change comes after a passenger, Dr. David Dao, was dragged from a fully booked United Express flight in Chicago because he refused to give up his seat to make room for crew members. Cellphone video of the incident sparked widespread outrage and created a public relations nightmare for United.

Under the change outlined in an internal email Friday, a crew member must make must-ride bookings at least 60 minutes before departure. Crews previously could be booked until the time of departure.

United spokeswoman Maggie Schmerin said in an email Sunday that the change is an initial step in a review of policies and

told, they would save $242 million, or one-half of 1 percent of what the state spends in a year. More than half of that – $125 million – would be reductions to already-battered university budgets.

MASS TRANSIT SUBSIDIES, $17.5 million

Federal and state laws require free or reduced rides for seniors and the disabled on commuter trains and buses in the metro Chicago area, at a cost to the Regional Transportation Authority of about $100 million. The state had previously provided a $34 million annual subsidy before it was halved when Rauner took office. The required discounts don’t go away even if the subsidy does, RTA Executive Director Leanne Redden said.

“These cuts to state funding would merely shift these costs to local taxpayers and fare-paying transit riders,” Redden said.

FUNERAL AND BURIAL EXPENSES, $8.8 million

The state pays for funerals and burials of those who die alone or with no money. Symonds Funeral Homes, with four Chicago-area locations, has received $43,000 this year for this service.

The service is offered statewide. Records show that funeral homes in Pekin, Springfield and Mount Vernon are among the top participants.

TEEN REACH, $13.1 million

The after-school program has survived other attempts at cuts. In Springfield, Tiffany Mathis, who coordinates Teen REACH for the Boys & Girls Clubs, said funding allows the club to stay open into night hours.

That’s when Lonnie Bland and Darian Bills, both high school seniors, use it. They learned lessons at the club, such as how to settle an argument on the basketball court with freethrows.

The club’s supportive atmosphere has helped when Bland encounters illicit drugs on the street. “I walk the other way,” he said.

Cook County Judge Stanley Sacks ordered 46-year-old Gilbert Feliciano to serve the prison sentence for home invasion, robbery and the murder of Stanley Letkiewicz, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Letkiewicz had noticed Feliciano begging for money outside of a store and decided to allow him to stay at his home. He paid Feliciano to clean or fix things in the basement and the attic. Letkiewicz’s relatives said the living arrangement became strained after Feliciano’s behavior became erratic and violent at times.

Authorities said Feliciano approached Letkiewicz on Sept. 3 while he was taking out the trash. Prosecutors said Feliciano asked him for $40. When Letkiewicz didn’t give him the money, Feliciano forced Letkiewicz into the home, beat him up and stole $100 from him.

Letkiewicz identified Feliciano as his attacker, but police hadn’t arrested him before Oct. 13, when a neighbor found Letkiewicz badly beaten in his home, said Jamie Santini, assistant state’s attorney.

He was taken to the hospital, where he told authorities who his attacker was before he died Nov. 23.

Police seek man who livestreamed homicide

CLEVELAND – An Ohio man claimed to be angry at a woman when he shot and killed an elderly passer-by Sunday afternoon while streaming the murder on Facebook.

Police urged the suspect to turn himself in, but he remained on the loose into the night. Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as Steve Stephens, and Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said officers were searching for him in the Cleveland area and beyond.

The victim was identified as 74-year-old Robert Goodwin Sr. In the video, which appears shaky, Stephens gets out of his car and appears to randomly target Goodwin, who was holding a shopping bag. Stephens said the name of a woman, whom Goodwin did not seem to recognize.

“She’s the reason that this is about to happen to you,” Stephens told Goodwin before pointing a gun at him.

Turkey votes to expand president’s powers

ISTANBUL – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won a historic referendum Sunday that will greatly expand the powers of his office, although opposition parties questioned the outcome and said they would challenge the results.

With nearly all ballots counted, the “yes” vote stood at 51.41 percent, while the “no” vote was 48.59 percent, according to the state-run Anadolu Agency. The head of Turkey’s electoral board confirmed the “yes” victory and said final results would be declared in 11 to 12 days.

Although the margin fell short of the sweeping victory Erdogan had sought in the landmark referendum, it could nevertheless cement his hold on power in Turkey and is expected to have a huge effect on the country’s long-term political future and its international relations. The 18 constitutional amendments that will come into effect after the next election, scheduled for 2019, will abolish the office of the prime minister and hand sweeping executive powers to the president.

Pence: N. Korea’s era of strategic patience is over

The Associated Press PANMUNJOM, South Korea – U.S. Vice President Mike Pence declared Monday the “era of strategic patience is over” with North Korea, expressing impatience with the unwillingness of the regime to move toward ridding itself of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

Pence told reporters near the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea that President Donald Trump is hopeful that China will use its “extraordinary levers” to pressure the North to abandon its weapons.

Pence, who has called the North’s failed missile test a day earlier “a provocation,” said the U.S. and its allies will achieve its objectives through “peaceable means or ultimately by whatever means are necessary” to protect South Korea and stabilize the region.

Pence visited a military base near the DMZ, Camp Bonifas, for a briefing with military leaders and to meet with American troops stationed there. The joint U.S.-South Korean military camp is just outside the 2.5mile DMZ. He later stood a few meters from the military demarcation line outside Freedom House, gazing at two North Korean soldiers across the border and then a deforested stretch of North Korea from a lookout post in the hillside.

His visit, full of Cold War symbolism, and his remarks to reporters come amid increasing tensions and heated rhetoric on the Korean Peninsula. While the North did not conduct a nuclear test, the specter of a potential escalated U.S. response trailed Pence as he began a 10-day trip to Asia.

Pointing to the quarter-century since North Korea first obtained nuclear weapons, the vice president said a period of patience followed.

“But the era of strategic patience is over,”

Pence said. “President Trump has made it clear that the patience of the United States and our allies in this region has run out and we want to see change. We want to see North Korea abandon its reckless path of the development of nuclear weapons, and also its continual use and testing of ballistic missiles is unacceptable.”

Trump himself asserted on Sunday that China was working with the United States on “the North Korea problem.” His national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, said the U.S. would rely on its allies as well as on Chinese leadership to resolve the issues with North Korea.

McMaster cited Trump’s recent decision to order missile strikes in Syria after a chemical attack blamed on the Assad government as a sign that the president “is clearly comfortable making tough decisions.” But at the same time, McMaster said on “This Week” on ABC, “it’s time for us to undertake all actions we can, short of a military option, to try to resolve this peacefully.”

The bottom line, McMaster said, is to stop the North’s weapons development and make the Korean Peninsula nuclear-free.

“It’s clear that the president is determined not to allow this kind of capability to threaten the United States. And our president will take action that is in the best interest of the American people,” he said.

After a two-month policy review, officials settled on a policy dubbed “maximum pressure and engagement,” U.S. officials said Friday. The administration’s immediate emphasis, the officials said, will be on increasing pressure on Pyongyang with the help of Beijing.

The officials weren’t authorized to speak publicly on the results of the policy review and requested anonymity.

Soccer diplomacy for the World Cup It was a sky’s-the-limit moment the other day when the leaders of North America’s three major soccer federations – from the United States, Mexico and Canada – announced from the observatory floor of the continent’s tallest building that they would bid jointly to host the 2026 World Cup. The news conference on the 102nd floor of One World Trade Center in Manhattan immediately made what The Post’s Steven Goff dubbed “the NAFTA World Cup” the odds-on favorite to win rights to stage a month-long mega-event that could generate $1 billion in revenue and attract millions of fans across 20 or more cities, most of them in the United States.

More than that, as an act of neighborliness and cooperation, it was a resounding counterpoint to Washington’s ragged regional relations, particularly with Mexico, and the Trump administration’s enthusiasm for building a border wall. Conceivably, the United States might have been the strongest contender for the Cup even if it had made a solo bid, but doing so would have required it to surmount, on its own, the negative effects of rising nativism and the White House’s dismissive and hostile remarks directed at friends and foes alike.

By standing with its neighbors, the U.S. soccer federation sent a message that the United States’ borders would be open to fans, officials and players from participating FIFA member countries - including Mexico and Iran, among others. That was reinforced by the U.S. federation chief, Sunil Gulati, who made a point of saying that Trump had encouraged the three-way bid and was “especially pleased” about the partnership with Mexico.

Mexico would host just 10 of the cup’s 80 matches, as would Canada; the other 60 would be held in a dozen or more U.S. cities. Still, many Mexican commentators, mindful of their slim chances at beating the United States in a head-to-head competition, were pleased.

Instead of mounting a problematic bid from a behemoth not currently winning any international popularity contests, the U.S. soccer federation, with its bid, now stands at the head of a juggernaut representing a combined North American population of 500 million, arm-in-arm with Mexico, host of two previous World Cups, in 1970 and 1986. (The only one hosted by the United States, in 1994, set records that still stand for average and overall attendance.)

It will likely be three years before FIFA’s 200-odd members vote on the bids. Conceivably, an African confederation could mount a strong challenge to host the event. But for now, the United States’ soccer officials have grasped what has lately eluded its political ones - what Gulati called the “hugely positive signal and symbol of what we can do together in unifying people.”

Alabama’s paragons of virtue have feet of clay So the “LuvGuv” is gone.

Earlier this week, Robert Bentley resigned as the governor of Alabama after a long-running but slow-burning sex scandal finally caught up with him. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of misuse of campaign funds rather than face a lengthy and embarrassing trial on criminal charges that might have resulted in jail time.

After an audiotape surfaced last year in which he spoke explicitly to his mistress of his longing, his denial of a sexual affair with a top aide was no longer tenable. Although he continued to deny the affair – insisting that he only talked about sexual congress with Rebekah Caldwell Mason but never actually engaged in it – an investigation strongly suggested he had employed the perquisites of his office both to further the affair and to try to hide it.

The people of my home state like to think of themselves as paragons of virtue – godly and compassionate folk who hew closely to the straight and narrow path. Yet, in less than a year, three top politicians have left office in a trail of scandal. Bentley’s departure makes for a

The former speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives, Mike Hubbard, was sent to prison last year after he was convicted of multiple ethics charges, stemming from his use of his office for private gain. The former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, Roy Moore, was suspended by a judicial ethics panel for ordering state judges to ignore the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage. (Around these parts, that counts not as misconduct but as heroism.)

And now Bentley, who campaigned for office as a pious, Bible-thumping Baptist deacon and dermatologist. He often quoted Scripture on the campaign trail.

He denounced an opponent for believing in evolution. He claimed that God had

elevated him to the governor’s office.

Really, though, the chronicle of Bentley’s downfall is anything but unusual.

The pages of history are littered with tales of powerful men who preached virtue while practicing vice. That story is as old as David and Bathsheba.

Rather, the most curious thing about Bentley’s religion is how little his stated beliefs – the values he actually espouses publicly – resemble the Christianity of the Bible. Here in the buckle of the Bible Belt, it is a commonplace that conservative Christianity does not welcome the stranger, does not care for the poor, does not tend to the sick. Instead, it endorses suspicion of immigrants, condescension toward the poor and retribution in the wake of perceived slights. It is an odd amalgam of white nationalism and fundamentalist Puritanism.

That’s why this state’s pious politicians passed one of the nation’s harshest laws aimed at illegal immigrants several years ago. That’s why the state Legislature has refused to expand Medicaid, which would grant health care to more of the state’s working poor. That’s why the criminal justice system continues to

enthusiastically endorse capital punishment, even though its implementation is rife with racial prejudice.

It’s no wonder that President Donald J. Trump is so popular in these parts. His hedonism proved no barrier to his receiving enthusiastic support from good churchgoing folk. They didn’t really care so much about Trump’s religious values.

As Wayne Flynt, one of Alabama’s most noted historians and an ordained Baptist minister, put it to The New York Times: “Being sound on the fundamentals depends on what the evangelical community has decided the fundamentals have become. At this time, what is fundamental is hating liberals, hating Obama, hating abortion and hating same-sex marriage.”

So Bentley may be gone, but the narrow-mindedness and ethnocentrism that helped him get elected remain firmly in place. There will be more Bentleys and Moores and Hubbards to come.

Then there is the intriguing case of the Syrian Electronic Army, which claimed responsibility for hacking into an Associated Press Twitter account.

On April 23, 2013, that account put out an erroneous tweet: “Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured.” Within a matter of minutes, AP issued a correction, by which time, however, $136 billion in equity market value had been erased.

The market recovered in short order. A blog post by The Post variously referred to the hack as “both juvenile and easily fixed”; and as “a surprisingly sophisticated bit of cyber- espionage in pursuit of some childish vandalism.” More than likely, it was neither.

In what may have been an extraordinary coincidence, the attack came just at the time that the Obama White House sent letters to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and then-Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., stating the following: “Because of our concern about the deteriorating situation in Syria, the president has made it clear that the use of chemical weapons – or transfer of chemical weapons to terrorist groups – is a red line for the United States of America. The Obama administration has communicated that message

publicly and privately to governments around the world, including the Assad regime.”

What may indeed have been a clumsy, juvenile piece of childish vandalism – that is, the phony AP tweet – could also have been a far more sophisticated warning from Syria: President Bashar Assad drawing his own “red line.”

A friendly reminder that if an easily discernible and correctable hack into a Twitter account can produce a $136 billion plummet in equity market value, it might be useful to consider what a more refined attack on the U.S. banking system could do.

Whatever the rationale, the Obama administration never took military action against Syria. As President Donald Trump considers his options against Syria and North Korea, his advisers would do well to remind him that cyberwarfare has a way of leveling the battlefield between a second- or even third-rate military power and the world’s undisputed military superpower.

Not as alarming as the specter of a North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile armed with a nuclear warhead, nor as worrisome as chemical or biological terrorism. But easier to carry out and much more likely.

Book sale planned at library DAILY CHRONICLE The Friends of the DeKalb Public Library will hold a huge sale of books, CDs and DVDs this weekend in the Yusunas Meeting Room on the lower level of the library, located at 309 Oak St Hours will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The vast majority of the nearly 5,000 items have been donated by library patrons and community members, and are in very good to nearly new condition. For ease of shopping, the books have been sorted into var-

ious categories, such as: hard cover fiction, trade fiction, sci-fi and fantasy, history, biography and memoir, art, cooking, large print, crafts, children’s; and more.

Prices range from 25 cents for children’s books and mass market paperbacks, to $1 for trade and large paperbacks, and $1.50 for all hardcover books. Audiobooks and music CDs cost $1 each, and DVDs cost $2.50.

There also will be one table of specially priced books. Sunday will be the all-day $5 a bag sale for books, with bags provided at the sale; DVDs and CDs will be half-price.

NIU Wind Ensemble to perform Tuesday

The NIU Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Ronnie Wooten, will perform its final concert of the season at 8 p.m.

The Sycamore Lions Club’s annual Great Western Trail Cleanup is at 8 a.m.

DeKALB – It was a bittersweet day for DeKalb senior center fielder Erin Karasewski.

The Barbs unveiled banners on the outfield fence highlighting the accomplishments of six DeKalb High School softball teams – including the 2014 and 2016 squads Karasewski was a part of – after a 15-10 loss in a slugfest against Oswego East on a windy Saturday afternoon.

“It was kind of cool to see the stepping stone (teams) that came before us; that was something I enjoyed, and it was super cool to know what we build off of,” said Karasewski, who went 3 for 5 with a double and three RBIs in the loss. “Today, I don’t think it was a bad game – we scored 10 runs – but it is bittersweet. We did lose, but we had an amazing season last season, so I don’t know.”

The banners represented the past success of the teams from 1977 (conference champions), 2003 (regional champions), 2011 (sectional champions, Elite 8), 2013 (regional champions), 2014 (regional champions) and 2016 (first team to make state).

Karasewski was an integral part of last year’s team that finished in fourth place in Class 4A. Despite last year’s success, Karasewski said the Barbs are focused on the 2017 season.

“In the beginning of the season, we really worked on pushing past it,” Karasewski said of the 2016 team’s accomplishments. “Each year is a new year, and this is a different team. Today was a good way to look back, but I feel like this year we’re pushing past it.”

It’s been a rocky stretch for the Barbs, who dropped their fifth consecutive game and are now 5-9 on the season.

Although the 10 runs against Oswego East are the most they’ve had since an 11-10 loss to Geneva in eight innings on March 27, the 15 runs allowed were a season-high. The Wolves (7-4) collected 20 hits Saturday against DeKalb and have scored 14 or more runs in seven of their games this season.

“We just have to get more consistent pitching and our bats will come around,” DeKalb coach Jeff Davis said. “Hopefully, we can salvage this season.”

slap single of the day. DeKalb got solid games from the slap-hitting lefthanders at the bottom of the lineup, with No. 8 hitter Payton Montgomery and Longeville each collecting two hits on the day. They both got on base in the bottom of the second and eventually scored on a two-run double by Karasewski.

“I think our lefties were here today,” Davis said. “They were into the game and controlled the game. That was nice they really made an impact on the game, but they need to do it every game. That’s why this game is designed for lefties, in terms of speed and quickness.”

The Barbs slugged their way back into the game by scoring four runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth, including a three-run homer by Skylar Haring to left field to cut it to 11-9.

However, the Wolves cushioned their lead with four runs in the top of the seventh, including a two-run double by Autumn Sullivan, who went 4 for 5 on the day.

“I don’t think we’re going to outslug a lot of teams,” Jeff Davis said.

“I think our pitching has to get better. We get behind to too many hitters and too many counts, and the result is base hits for the other team. That has to get better if we’re going to improve as a team.”

For the Wolves, the first five hitters of the lineup – Emily Schultz, Danielle Williams, Davis, Ashley Schultz and Mackenna Mittelstaedt each had two hits, and Green went 3 for 5. Warner started in the circle for DeKalb and pitched the first three innings and the seventh, and Newport, who took the loss, pitched the fourth through sixth.

Beyond the stats: There were a pair of scary moments in the game for DeKalb, with Riggs and Rylee Levine each getting hit by a pitch in the helmet. Both were okay, and Levine even gestured she was fine immediately after getting hit.

They said it: “We’re still finding our footing,” Karasewski said. “I have full confidence – I feel like this week we’ve made progress. You don’t see it, but behind the scenes, as a team, we’ve definitely made progress. ...

We’re working hard on overcoming – we’re so close, we have to get over that last hurdle.”

Up next: The Barbs play at Geneseo at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Unexpected, but great.

The second-year Bulls player scored 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting off the bench and grabbed nine rebounds.

Robin Lopez was physical.

Expected, and physical.

The veteran big man owned the boards, including eight offensive rebounds.

But in a star league at a star time of the season, that’s where the Bulls really had Boston against the wall. And if the 106-102 Bulls win in Game 1 of the best-ofseven playoff series shocked some people, well, that shock wasn’t being felt in the visiting locker room of the TD Garden on Sunday.

Thanks to 30 points from three-time All-Star Jimmy Butler, as well as Rajon Rondo and Dwyane Wade combining for 23 points and 12 assists, the No. 8-seeded team in the Eastern Conference took

down the top-seeded Celtics, and came away feeling like there was simply more where that came from.

It’s not to say the Bulls were only a three-man show by any means. In crunch time, however, the Bulls leaned on Butler, but looked like a roster with options. For Boston, it was more of Isaiah Thomas or bust.

“We were so locked in all week,” Butler said of the performance. “We knew their stuff just like they knew ours, but we executed extremely well. We haven’t done that most of the season, but this was the right time to do it.”

Especially with the emotional storm awaiting them.

Thomas obviously was playing with a heavy heart, and there was some doubt whether he would even make the game after his younger sister, Chyna Thomas, was killed in a single-car crash Saturday morning in Washington.

That’s why leading into this series all week, the Bulls sounded and acted like a very confident bunch, despite all the ups and downs of their regular season.

It was almost a roster better suited for postseason play.

“If you’re going to beat them, you’re going to earn it, and [Sunday] I definitely felt like we earned this win,” Wade said.

As for Boston, it has to prepare for Game 2, as well as the emotions that Thomas still will be dealing with.

CHICAGO – The Cubs appeared to have staved off a sweep from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Easter Sunday until things fell apart in the seventh inning in front of 39,422 at Wrigley Field.

The Pirates completed the threegame sweep by beating the Cubs, 6-1, in dramatic fashion.

Once Cubs pitcher Jon Lester left the game with a 1-0 lead in the seventh inning, relief pitcher Koji Uehara promptly gave up two hits and two walks, giving the Pirates a 3-1 lead.

The Pirates chased Uehara from the game when infielder Jordy Mercer singled to right-center field, scoring pinch hitter John Jaso, tying the game at 1.

The Pirates tacked on another two runs in the eighth inning when Mercer and rookie infielder Alen Hanson scored.

Uehara, who got the loss, entered the game with a 20-inning scoreless streak, the second-longest in baseball.

He was replaced by reliever Hector Rondon.

Pirates pitcher Jameson Taillon (1-0) pitched seven innings, striking out six for the win. He completed his fourth career start of at least seven innings without allowing an earned run.

Lester got the no-decision (0-0) after Uehara couldn’t hold the lead.

Lester pitched seven innings. He gave up three hits, struck out three, on 103 pitches, 67 of them for strikes. He has a rough spot in the first inning when he allowed a walk to Mercer and a triple down the right field line to outfielder Andrew McCutchen.

“We were able to make up for it,” Lester said. “I got back to where we needed to be. First inning was a little shaky. I was trying to find release points on pitches without any trouble.

MINNEAPOLIS – If Avisail Garcia carries this hot start into something more than the lukewarm performances that marked the first few seasons of his career and have been a source of consternation from fans and media criticism, he probably won’t be one to gloat.

Garcia, who had underachieved since the Sox got him as a highly thought-of prospect in a trade for Jake Peavy in 2013, said he doesn’t have rabbit ears when it comes to what others have said about him.

“I don’t pay attention to what everybody says,” he said Sunday. “I control what I can control. What people say about me, I don’t pay attention. I know who I am, so just keep working hard and do what can I do for my team.”

All he’s done for his team is hit a baseball-best .465, enhanced by his biggest day yet, a 4-for-5 performance including a two-run, tiebreaking home run to the opposite field against right-hander Ryan Pressly in the 10th inning to give the Sox a 3-1 victory and their second straight series win on the road against an AL

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease exposure common in schools Dear Doctor: My daughter’s school recently sent home a flyer about potential exposure to hand-foot-and-mouth disease.

How worried should I be?

Dear Reader: Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is common. It occurs most often in infants and children younger than 7 years of age and is caused by one of 16 types of enterovirus. Outbreaks are more likely in the late summer and early fall, when children are starting a new year of school or preschool.

Because the viruses that lead to HFMD are largely intestinal, they’re usually passed via stool. Small amounts of the virus then make it onto the hands of the child or someone changing the child’s diaper. The virus passes from one individual to another when it ends up on food, the fingers or the pacifier of another child, ending up in the mouth. The fecal-oral transmission is the most common way the virus infects others, but it can also be passed through oral secretions, through coughing, and through the fluid from the blisters seen in hand-foot-and-mouth disease.

Regardless, the virus makes its way down to the lower intestine, spreading to the lymph nodes and from there to the rest of the body. The typical time it takes for the enterovirus to be ingested and for the first symptoms to appear is three to five days.

Symptoms of the disease begin with mouth or throat pain or the refusal to eat.

The most striking symptom of hand-footand-mouth disease is the blisterlike rash that occurs both within the mouth and on the hands and feet; such blisters also can appear on the legs, arms and buttocks.

The lesions are normally not painful and resolve in three or four days. Some species of enterovirus also cause fever, nausea and vomiting. Rarely, enteroviruses can lead

I can understand the worry your school – and you – have regarding this infection.

As I noted, the incubation period is typically three to five days, but one study of an outbreak at a day care showed children were infectious up to seven days. And, not to make you overly worried, but some enteroviruses can be passed in the stool up to 10 weeks after infection.

I would ask school officials at which date the infected child began having symptoms of HFMD. If it was more than five days ago, I would be less concerned about your child now developing the disease.

However, because the virus can be shed long after disease, I would stress the importance of hand-washing. If your daughter does get hand-foot-and-mouth disease, the symptoms likely will not last long, and any discomfort can be treated with acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Watch for warning signs of potential complications, such as listlessness, severe headache or neck stiffness.

Consult your pediatrician if your child has these symptoms.

Also, if your daughter does become infected, make sure to practice good hygiene at home, so the virus does not pass to you or other family members.

DEAR ABBY I’ve always been a self-sufficient Jeanne woman. I grew Phillips up in an abusive household, moved out at 16, and cut off contact with my family a couple of years later when it became apparent nothing would change.

Nine months ago, my husband walked out on me and our 3-year-old son. He has no interest in our child. Our roommate, “Matt,” became “Daddy” to my son with my ex’s blessing.

I want a divorce, but I’m not sure how to proceed. My ex and I have talked; he wants to give up his parental rights, and I have no interest in getting child support from him. All I want is my son.

I can’t afford a lawyer right now because of some financial obligations my ex left me saddled with, but I don’t want to put this off. If anything were to happen to me, my son would go to my ex instead of the man he considers his dad.

All my friends are either happily married or single, and I have no family to turn to for advice. I’m not religious, so I have no clergyperson to consult. Is there someplace I can turn to for help in ending this marriage, or do I just need to save up until I can afford legal counsel? – Single mom In Oregon Dear Single Mom: Your next step should be to contact your state bar association and find out if there are low-cost legal services in your area. Dear Abby: Some nights I talk in my sleep.

It doesn’t happen every night, and there is no rhyme or reason for it. Recently my husband told me I said something during my sleep that made him angry. He didn’t want to get into a fight, so we haven’t discussed it more. I suspect I may have been having an “adult” dream and said a name other than his.

Now he tries to stay up later than me. I think he may be trying to question me while I’m sleeping in order to get more information out of me on the subject. My doctor said there is no guarantee my response would be true or even related to the questions my husband asked me.

These days, since players intervene with scant regard for suit quality or hand strength, you and your partner must be ready to fight back. Bridge is not a game for cowards.

If the opener bids one of a suit, the next player overcalls in a different suit, perhaps with a single jump, and the responder doubles, that is negative. Its primary job at a low level is to try to find a fit in an unbid major. In this deal, North’s double shows four hearts and 6 or more points. (North might have five hearts if his hand is too weak for a two-heart response, which promises 10-plus points.)

Over this double, South has an easy jump to four hearts. (Perhaps he thought about three no-trump, but that would not have worked well if West had led a high diamond. Then East would have signaled with the queen to tell West that the suit was running.)

West leads the diamond ace, cashes the diamond king and continues with a third diamond, which South ruffs.

On top, declarer has one spade, four hearts and four clubs. So, along with the diamond ruff, there are no worries. Just take the ruff, draw trumps and run the clubs.

What would North have done without the negative double? Presumably bid two clubs, potentially reaching a 3-3 fit. You will get positive results with negative doubles.
