Community center set to be first of Action 2020 amenities to open

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Park District’s new $13 million recreation campus is starting to take shape at the 25-acre construction site along Airport Road.

Crews are leveling the ground, piling topsoil to save for the sled hill and laying stones that will support the foundation of the community center.

The 22,400-square-foot center is projected to be the first feature ready for public use in March 2018, Park District Executive Director Dan Gibble said.

Other recreation campus features will include the Brian Bemis Family Dog Park, a splash pad designed by Vortex Aquatic Structures International, the Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital Sled Hill and an outdoor amphitheater and patio.

DeKalb County voters agreed in November 2014 to fund $9 million of the district’s Action 2020 plans with a property tax increase. The remaining costs are set to be paid from $3 million in grants and $1 million from the Leaf a Legacy fundraising campaign.

Park district leaders celebrated the start of construction on the series of projects Feb. 28 with a groundbreaking ceremony. Since that time, Ringland-Johnson Construction of Rockford, the construction management firm for Action 2020, has been frequently posting photos of construction progress to the park district’s website.

Gibble said the community center should start going up in May or early June, with construction to follow through the summer. Crews will continue interior work such as electrical, drywalling and painting during fall.

“The contractors hopefully get everything closed in before the winter gets too cold or too snowy; that way they can work through the winter to do all the finish work,” he said.

The next feature slated for completion is the splash pad, which should be open to the public in summer 2018.

The sled hill and dog park could take another year, to give the grass on both features time to settle, Gibble said.

on sleds until the turf is well-established, or it will get muddy really fast,” he said.

So far, most of the work has been to level the ground for the parking lot and community center. The excavated black dirt is being stored in a pile for later use as topsoil for the sled hill, Gibble said.

“That way we don’t have to move any dirt from the site,” he said.

Gibble said the sled hill will lean up toward the second floor of the community center, allowing for more height, as well as handicapped acces-

sibility from inside the building.

“Someone, if they’re in a wheelchair, can go in the building, up the elevator, and roll down the indoor track to the corner of the building and get out to the top of the hill, and with assistance, then go sledding,” he said.

Additional space on the north side of the campus could be used for a new Sycamore pool in the future, although it is not part of the Action 2020 plans.

Gibble said he remains hopeful that a collaborative effort with the

DeKalb Park District could result in a joint community pool; however, the extra space on the recreation campus would be there for a Sycamore pool, if that option does not pan out.

Meanwhile, the Leaf a Legacy campaign is about $37,000 short of its $1 million goal, Gibble said.

He said district officials soon will be asking community members to contribute for the costs of the new irrigation system at the Sycamore Park District Golf Club. Irrigation work is expected to begin in fall 2018.

“Our dog owners have raised a lot of money, and our sled hill folks have raised some money, and we’ve got donations for the community center,” Gibble said. “One of the other big projects is replacing the old golf course irrigation, so we’re getting ready to kick off a campaign for that.”

He said they hope to reach their $1 million goal this spring.

“We’re within reach,” he said.

“I’m optimistic.”

Local pastors prepare Easter messages

With the season of Lent coming to a close, local pastors are preparing messages of God’s love through the story of Jesus Christ’s resurrection to share with churchgoers Easter Sunday.

The Christian holiday celebrates Christ rising from the dead after being crucified and signifies the beginning of a new season focused on resurrection and new life.

Church leaders throughout DeKalb County are expecting pews to be packed as usual for the holiday and are ready to put the stories behind Easter into context for their faithful followers.

The Rev. Marty Marks of Immanuel Lutheran Church and Student Center in DeKalb said those who attend Sunday can expect to hear about how God has love for all and sacrificed his son to save humanity from sin.

“The message every year is one of good news for those in DeKalb and the whole world,” Marks said. “There’s a God that loves the world.”

Marks said he usually expects about 300 people to attend church between the two services offered Sunday morning.

“Not just Christian families – everyone is welcome because God loves everyone,” he said.

The Rev. Harlene Harden of Sycamore United Methodist Church said she would be reading from John 20, verses 1-18, in the Bible, which relays the story of Christ’s resurrection.

Harden said she would talk about the time of day that the resurrection occurred and emphasize a message that comes to light in Psalm 30:5, which reads in part: “Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.”

“When we want to do something significant, we leave early in the morning,” Harden said. “Good things happen early in the morning, like the resurrection of Jesus.”

Harden said she is expecting at least 500 people to attend church this weekend among the Saturday and Sunday services.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” she said. “I’m hoping for more than 500.”

The Rev. Blake Richter of Westminster Presbyterian Church in DeKalb said he wants people on Easter to know that although plenty of reasons exist to be pessimistic, the resurrection is a reason for hope.

“The temptation is always there for pastors to say something new,” he said.

“The key is to remember the message given throughout the years: death does not conquer our hope in God.” He said Easter Sunday Mass usually brings in about 30 percent to 40 percent more people.

“I think there should be additional excitement around the great holidays of the church,” he said.

“Basically, we’ll be talking about what the resurrection of Jesus tells us

in terms of a bigger story,” he said. “Jesus is inviting us into a bigger story.”

Knitt said he is new to his role at the church, so he is not sure how many people to expect for Easter Mass. How-

ever, he is excited to celebrate a deeply valued day for the church.

“It’s a day of hope, a day of love,” Knitt said. “I hope people experience love and find hope on Easter.”

Curtis Lee Way, 70, of Lake Worth, Florida, died Thursday, April 6, 2017.

Curt was born in DeKalb on February 12, 1947. He is the son of William J. and Ann

(Durr) Sipavich. Curt graduated from DeKalb High School in 1965 and served in the Army for two years in Vietnam. He married the love of his life, Karen Koivula, on December 29, 1997.

Curt is survived by his mother, Ann Sipavich and sister, Lori (Nick) Berezovsky both of Salina, Kansas; daughters, Angela (Mark) Gorman of Lake Worth, and Carri (Mike) Novak of Washington state, Paul (Eduardo) Koivula and Jackie Koivula of Boynton Beach, Florida; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Karen, in 2016; father, William J. Sipavich; daughter, Rhonda DeRoche; and son, Travis M. Way. Private services will take place at a later date.

NIU staff meteorologist laid off after 19 years

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois University Staff Meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste was let go after 19 years.

NIU spokesman Joe King said the decision was not a reflection of the work Sebenste has done for the university.

“We are a storm-ready campus because of his efforts and have another designation as a Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador from the National Weather Service, which goes directly to making sure we’re ready for violent weather and can come back quickly from it,” King said. “We’re at a point where a lot of hard choices have to be made, and that position was deemed one that had to go.”

King said this decision was not related to an email sent out by NIU President Doug Baker to faculty and students, which suggested a decrease in the university’s workforce as a means to offset the uncertainty of state funding because of Illinois’ longstanding budget impasse.

“Going forward, we will need to continue to decrease the size of our workforce, because employment costs

account for more than 50 percent of our overall budget,” Baker said in the email.

“In the past, employment reductions have come largely through attrition.

We hope to continue doing that going forward, but we must recognize that we might need to cut more than what’s possible through attrition.”

Sebenste’s layoff was one that was proposed during NIU’s “program prioritization” talks that have been going on since fall 2015.

“Last spring, when the Program Prioritization Administrative Task Force made its report to campus, the area where Gilbert works, Environmental Health and Safety, was identified as one where there was potential for staff reductions,” King said. “As we make reductions, we are trying to be strategic and attempt to find cuts that do not impact our core missions of educating students and supporting research and artistry.”

As a supportive professional staff member, Sebenste is allowed a full year from the time of his termination notice before he must leave.

King said it is unclear how his duties will be redistributed once he’s gone.

The decision to retire wasn’t nearly as difficult as deciding where to hang our hats when the time came. Being actively involved in our community, enjoying travel and having family out of state meant we had to take a good hard look at where we wanted to retire. NIU grads hook investor on ‘Shark Tank’

CHICAGO – Did you see that? If you missed it, Northern Illinois University graduates Joe Parisi and Adam Havey just landed a new business partner on ABC’s “Shark Tank.”

Barbara Corcoran trumped fellow Shark Kevin O’Leary with an offer of $100,000 for 20 percent of the guys’ brainchild, Guard Llama.

Parisi, the personal security startup’s CEO, appeared on the show with the company’s third co-founder, Nick Nevarez, while Havey was back home.

Despite pitching decision-makers just about every day, Havey, the company’s head of sales, knew three would have been a crowd one too many.

Besides, he knew Parisi had an offer in the bag before he left Chicago, where the 29-year-olds live.

“They had so much training up until then, I had no doubt they’d get a deal,”

Havey said. “Joe must have done the pitch 100 times a day, so I’ve even had it in my head. I probably could have been his body double.”

“Shark Tank” is an ABC reality show in its eighth season in which hopeful entrepreneurs pitch their products to five “sharks,” wealthy investors who decide whether they want to buy into the idea.

What helped Parisi go in relaxed – or as relaxed as someone can be on national TV – was knowing Guard Llama already had received about $1.1 million from investors, even before entering the “Shark Tank.”

He, like Havey, is used to standing in front of big money and trying to pry some out.

“It would have been a really interesting thing if they asked me a question nobody has asked me; I don’t know if there’s a question about our product I haven’t been asked,” Parisi said. “A lot about entrepreneurship is putting

Railroad crossing work to close part of Route 23 for a week

GENOA – Part of Route 23 east of Genoa will be closed for about a week starting Monday, for work to be done on the CP Railway crossing just north of state Route 72, according to an Illinois Department of Transportation news release.

Drivers wanting to travel north on Route 23 should take Route 72 east to Route 47, turn left, and then turn left again on Route 20 and take it back to Route 23.

The same detour, in reverse, should be followed by southbound drivers.

Drivers should expect delays along the detour.

DeKALB – Members of the public are encouraged to show their patriotic side by participating in DeKalb’s Memorial Day Parade on May 29.

The DeKalb Chamber of Commerce has opened registration for those wishing to walk in the parade. Sign-up forms are available on the chamber’s website, www.dekalb.org.

Participants should check in at 8:30 a.m. at the corner of North Third and Locust streets, where they will be lined up.

The parade will step off at 9 a.m. at North Third Street and Lincoln Highway and will end at the Elwood House at 509 N. First St. There then will be a short program of remembrance at 9:30 a.m. at the Ellwood House.

Tom Doherty, a 23rd Circuit Court judge and former Marine, will be the keynote speaker during the program.

Rauner vows to veto abortion bill

Gov. opposes allowing state to cover procedure

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner pledged Friday to veto a Democratic-backed measure that would allow the state to cover abortions for its employees and Medicaid recipients.

The governor’s office released a statement saying the Republican opposes legislation that would remove prohibitions on state employee health insurance and Medicaid funds from covering abortions.

The proposal would also safeguard abortion access in Illinois by striking language in current law that expresses the state’s intent to criminalize the procedure if the landmark 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized it is ever overturned.

“Gov. Rauner is committed to protecting women’s reproductive rights under current Illinois law,” said Eleni Demertzis, a Rauner spokeswoman. “However, recognizing the sharp divisions of opinion of taxpayer funding of abortion, he does not support HB40.”

The legislation is sponsored by Democratic state Rep. Sara Feigenholtz of Chicago, who said Rauner’s opposition reveals a lack of regard for the health and economic independence of low-income women.

“The art of discrimination is alive and well in the governor’s office,” she said, calling the move an attempt to placate his party’s “far-right.”

Trump has said he would nominate U.S. Supreme Court justices who oppose abortion rights, and on Thursday he signed legislation allowing states to deny federal money for family planning services to Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers.

The legislation cleared a House committee in February and awaits a floor vote when lawmakers return from a two-week break.

Rauner’s message could wield a fatal blow to the bill in a chamber where it likely lacks the votes needed for a

veto override. Feigenholtz said no Republican representatives are supporting her measure.

During Rauner’s 2014 run for governor, he insisted he had no social agenda. Since taking office, he has angered some social conservatives by signing legislation they oppose, including bills expanding access to birth control and requiring physicians who refuse to perform abortions to inform patients where they can go instead.

Several conservative groups, such as Illinois Right to Life and the Archdiocese of Chicago, have called on Rauner to veto the bill.

Republican state Rep. David McSweeney of Barrington Hills recently urged the governor in an interview with a conservative blog to speak out against what he called “radical” legislation that he claimed would increase taxpayer spending to expand abortion access.

Democrats are already highlighting the debate as a campaign issue. Billionaire and 2018 gubernatorial contender J.B. Pritzker released a statement Friday chastising Rauner for misleading voters by calling himself “pro-choice” yet adopting Trump’s “extreme agenda.”

Eighteen other states have laws on their books that could be used to criminalize abortion if the landmark ruling is overturned, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a research group that supports abortion rights.

Illinois is not the only state re-examining abortion access under Trump.

Oregon is considering a proposal that would require most health care plans to cover abortions.

Fifteen other states already help fund abortion coverage.

More about Guard Llama Joe Parisi, a 2011 Northern Illinois University accounting graduate, and Adam Havey, a 2012 graduate in communication studies, launched their startup, Guard Llama, in 2015. It markets an app and keychain remote designed to alert authorities in case of an emergency.

According to Guard Llama’s website, guardllama.com, pressing the remote twice sends a Bluetooth signal to the Guard Llama app, which alerts the company’s emergency dispatch center. Guard Llama then will send the user’s GPS location, photo and medical information to the center and alert any emergency contacts.

Police are then dispatched, knowing the user’s appearance and location within 9 feet.

Using the service, police can find someone up to three times faster than calling 911 directly, according to the website.

Guard Llama is part of Impact Engine, a Chicago-based venture fund that invests in early stage businesses that seek to improve education, health, economic empowerment and resource efficiency.

The service costs $2.95 a month for the app, $9.95 a month for the keychain remote and app and $29.95 a month for a family plan.

Chicago man in dismissed case freed after 2 decades

CHICAGO – A man whose conviction in a double murder case was based on suspect evidence has been released from custody after more than 20 years.

Roberto Almodovar walked out of a Chicago jail Friday afternoon. His attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, said he’s now with his family at the Chicago residence where he grew up and where he was arrested in 1994.

Almodovar was released hours after a Cook County judge dismissed the charges against him and his co-defendant, William Negron, who remains imprisoned on another murder conviction.

State’s Attorney Kim Foxx agreed to drop the case against Almodovar earlier this week.

Chicago libraries expand tech program for city youth

CHICAGO – The city of Chicago is expanding a youth technology program to more library locations. Officials including Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Public Library Commissioner Brian Bannon announced earlier this month that the YOUmedia program will get boost of more than $1 million over three years.

City officials said the privately raised money is coming from corporate donors.

The program operates digital labs for youth in one dozen libraries.

WASHINGTON – The Trump administration has settled on its North Korea strategy after a two-month review: “Maximum pressure and engagement.”

U.S. officials said Friday the president’s advisers weighed a range of ideas for how to get North Korea to abandon its nuclear program, including military options and trying to overthrow the isolated communist dictatorship’s leadership. At the other end of the spectrum, they looked at the notion of accepting North Korea as a nuclear state.

In the end, however, they settled on a policy that appears to represent continuity.

The administration’s emphasis, the officials said, will be on increasing pressure on Pyongyang with the help of China, North Korea’s dominant trade partner. The officials weren’t authorized to speak publicly on the results of the policy review and requested anonymity.

The new strategy will be deployed at a time of escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula. U.S., South Korean and other officials are closely monitoring the North amid indications it could conduct another missile test or nuclear explosion to coincide with an important national anniversary this weekend.

Pyongyang has undertaken five nuclear tests since 2006.

An influential Washington think tank estimated Friday that North Korea could already have up to 30 bombs.

The Institute for Science and International Security cited a worrying increase in North Korea’s nuclear program, but said the arsenal may only have been as large as 13 atomic weapons at the end of 2016. Its research suggested a range between 10 and 16 such weapons two years earlier. The institute’s estimates are

based on what it believes the North has produced in plutonium and weapons-grade uranium. The margins represent uncertainty as to whether North Korea has one or two uranium enrichment facilities.

The North has owned up to one such facility, at its Nyongbyon nuclear complex, but the U.S. government assumes it has more.

“The bottom line is that North Korea has an improving nuclear weapons arsenal,” said David Albright, the institute’s president.

He said the North may have a handful of plutonium-based warheads it can mount on medium-range ballistic missiles capable of reaching South Korea and Japan. But it’s doubtful the North is currently able to build reliable, survivable warheads for an intercontinental ballistic missile that can strike the U.S. mainland, he said.

As for the Trump administration’s policy, the U.S. officials emphasized that no engagement of North Korea is currently taking place.

Although China advocates for diplomatic outreach, the focus for now is on pressure.

The officials said the goal of engagement would have to be North Korea’s denuclearization. It cannot lead to an arms control agreement or reduction of the North’s atomic arsenal that would imply American acceptance of North Korea as a nuclear power.

The officials are hopeful China and Russia would agree to tighter U.N. sanctions on North Korea if it conducts another nuclear test. They pointed to a recent editorial in a state-run Chinese newspaper advocating tighter restrictions on selling oil to North Korea.

Beijing’s decision earlier this year to cut off coal imports from North Korea also are being seen as a hopeful sign. Coal sales are an important source of revenue for Kim Jong Un’s government, and the U.S. has said China has turned back some shipments in recent days.

Afghanistan: U.S. bomb killed 36 militants

The Associated Press KABUL, Afghanistan – The biggest non-nuclear bomb ever dropped in combat by the U.S. military killed 36 militants in eastern Afghanistan, officials said Friday, and villagers in the remote, mountainous area described being terrified by the “earsplitting blast.”

The strike using the Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb, or MOAB, was carried out Thursday morning against an Islamic State group tunnel complex carved in the mountains that Afghan forces have tried to assault repeatedly in recent weeks in fierce fighting in Nangarhar province, Afghan officials said.

U.S. and Afghan forces have been battling the Taliban insurgency for more than 15 years. But the U.S. military brought out the biggest conventional bomb in its arsenal for the first time to hit the Islamic State, which has a far smaller but growing presence in Afghanistan. That apparently reflects President Donald Trump’s vow for a more aggressive campaign against the group.

Gen. Daulat Waziri, a ministry spokesman, said 36 IS fighters were killed, and that the death toll could likely rise. He said Afghan forces were at the tunnel complex assessing the damage.

The Islamic State group’s Aamaq news agency denied that any of its fight-

ers were killed or wounded, citing a source within the group.

Waziri said the bombing was necessary because the complex was extremely hard to penetrate, with some tunnels as deep as about 130 feet. He called it a “strong position,” with troops attacking it four times without advancing, adding that the complex “was full of mines.”

“This was the right weapon for the right target,” said U.S. Gen. John W. Nicholson, NATO commander in Afghanistan, at a news conference. He added that there were no reports of civilian casualties.

Nicholson said the bomb was intended to eliminate the militants’ sanctuary in southern Nangarhar, “and this weapon was very effective in that use.”

The office of President Ashraf Ghani said there was “close coordination” between the U.S. military and the Afghan government over the operation, and they were careful to prevent any civilian casualties.

But the massive blast still terrified villagers 20 miles away across the border in Pakistan.

Pakistani villagers living near the frontier said the explosion was so loud they thought a bomb had been dropped in their village by U.S. warplanes targeting militants in Pakistan.

In recent weeks, the president has gone from labeling NATO “obsolete” to “no longer obsolete.” He’s ordered a cruise missile bombardment in Syria after saying during the campaign that the U.S. should steer clear of the place. He’s decided the Export-Import Bank, which he once opposed, is a good thing after all. And he’s done a U-turn on his pledge to label China a currency manipulator.

Some prominent conservatives haven’t hesitated to criticize Trump’s recent actions.

by White House adviser Steve Bannon, called the president’s Syrian airstrikes an immoral “misadventure” that “violates every promise he ran on and could sink his presidency.”

However, nearly three months into Trump’s presidency, many supporters say they never really expected him to hew to all his campaign positions anyway. Trump, a former Democrat, was never one to attract the labels of policy wonk or ideologue.

“I don’t think any president really knows what they’re doing the first few months in office,” said Jeff Baumgardner, 59, an airline captain from Shindle, Pennsylvania. “What they say on a campaign is always different than what they do.”

Sure, Trump needs to deliver on some of his promises, Baumgardner said, “but

some of them are just election banter.”

Husband and wife Larry and Eleanor Sacilowski, from Langhorne, Pennsylvania, don’t see Trump’s policy shifts as a problem.

“It makes him human,” said Eleanor, 70, a receptionist.

“You never stop learning,” added Larry, 74, an auto parts deliveryman.

For Ziegler, 33, a Republican state committeeman in Florida, Trump’s shifts are a sign he’s getting “different information” now that he’s president.

As long as Trump holds firm on Ziegler’s top priorities – opposing abortion and refusing to grant amnesty to immigrants living in the country illegally – Ziegler said he’s OK with other policy changes.

“Let’s remember Donald Trump’s a dealmaker, and when you’re negotiating in business you don’t always get 100 percent of what you want,” Ziegler said.

Naranjo, a Cuban-born Trump voter, thinks the president’s performance has been lackluster but there’s still time for him to turn things around.

“We’re expecting too much too fast,” said Naranjo, 70.

To a number of Trump voters, as long as the president delivers on his repeal-and-replace pledge for the health care law – far from a sure thing – other issues are secondary.

WASHINGTON – What’s wrong with being flexible? All presidents change their minds. He’s only human.

President Donald Trump’s voters can be a forgiving lot – up to a point.

“He thinks too fast and then makes decisions too fast,” said Miriam Naranjo in Miami Lakes, Florida.

“He’s changing his mind on almost everything he said,” said Bob Brown of South Windsor, Connecticut.

Naranjo is willing to give Trump more time. Brown is not.

The president’s recent shifts in position on big foreign policy issues have got his supporters pondering: Are the reversals worth a mere shrug of the shoulders, or are they a cause for greater concern.

Where critics see a flip-flopper, many Trump voters see the kind of recalibrating that’s to be expected from any new president, even more so for the first in history to land in the Oval Office without any government or military experience.

Thumbs-down to meeting times Thumbs-down: To inconvenient scheduling and late reporting. A city of DeKalb Joint Review Board hearing on how millions in public funds are being spent in the city was scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Thursday, a time when many people are at work. The hearing was to inform board members and the public about how the city is spending tax increment financing proceeds. But the figures discussed at the hearing were from the fiscal year that ended in July 2016 – almost a year ago. Tax increment financing generates a large amount of discretionary spending for the city, and the accounting of how the money is being spent and how effective the spending has been should be more prompt and accessible.

Thumbs-up: To succeeding in the “Shark Tank.”

On Friday, Northern Illinois University alumni Joe Parisi (2011) and Adam Havey (2012) secured a $100,000 investment in their company, Guard Llama, on the ABC TV show. Parisi and Havey were among the co-founders of their company in 2015.

They have created an app and keychain remote designed to alert authorities in case of an emergency. They had to keep the outcome of the show under wraps for a while, but now that the show has aired, they can finally talk about it. Congratulations and good luck to Havey, Parisi and their new company.

Thumbs-down: To brutalizing airline passengers. Video of a man being dragged off a United Airlines flight at O’Hare International Airport on Sunday spread far and wide this week and enraged a lot of people. Lawyers for the man who was dragged off the plane, 69-year-old David Dao of Kentucky, say he suffered a concussion and a broken nose and lost two teeth as a result of his removal. It was wrong for the airline to treat a paying customer who had already been seated on a plane that way just because it wanted to make room for a flight crew. If there’s any positive that can come from the situation, it appears it will lead to a change in the way airlines treat passengers.

Thumbs-down: To false comparisons to Hitler.

Note to White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer – never talk about Hitler when addressing the press, and especially not during the Jewish holiday of Passover. For one, Hitler’s dead. For another, there’s an excellent chance you’ll put your foot in your mouth when making any comparison to one of history’s most murderous megalomaniacs. The regime of Syria’s Bashar Assad is bad.

He may well have committed war crimes against his own people. But Hitler is in another league of evil. Any sentence that begins “Even Hitler didn’t ...” has a high probability of being regrettable no matter how it ends.

Keep close eye on Flint relief funds A lot of money is now flowing into Flint to replace the city’s lead-leaching water lines. The dollars should also come with a fierce watchdog.

The Michigan Senate last week approved the awarding of $100 million in federal funds to the troubled city to replace its pipes. In addition, the settlement of a lawsuit against the state will deliver another $87 million.

That money should be enough to identify and replace the estimated 18,000 water lines serving Flint homes and businesses by the target date of 2020, but only if it is properly and productively spent.

With the recent controversy over how contracts are being awarded and some concerns with Mayor Karen Weaver’s administration, as well as the city’s legacy of corruption, steps should be taken to ensure the money gets to where it is intended to go.

In approving the federal outlay, the Senate attached a few strings. Flint will have to give regular reports to the state on the progress and costs of replac-

ing the pipes.

That’s a good start, but each dollar should be tracked. Given the state’s involvement with the Flint water crisis, and the general distrust in Flint regarding any state action, a neutral party would be best.

The auditor general could be a decent option, if that office has the proper manpower. And Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich of Flint should also be consulted, given his close involvement with his hometown.

Last year, he proposed the creation of a Flint authority to oversee the city’s recovery. The state could revisit that idea.

Already, Flint officials are battling over how the bids for the first $35 million of replacement work were awarded.

Objections by some council members that one firm – the low bidder – was awarded all of the work forced the reopening of the bid process.

The city is already under federal investigation for how $25.5 million in blight funds are being used. The Treasury Department

has not said what triggered the audit, but per-unit demolition costs have soared.

Last fall, Flint was caught up in the scandal involving Rizzo Environmental Services, which allegedly bribed a number of Macomb County officials.

Former Mayor Woodrow Stanley was working for Rizzo at the time Flint was considering awarding the company a garbage hauling contract. Weaver said publicly she didn’t know about Stanley’s involvement when she recommended going with Rizzo, but emails obtained by the Flint Journal suggest otherwise.

Weaver was also hit by a federal whistleblower lawsuit last year filed by a former city administrator who charges she was fired for objecting to a request by the mayor to divert into her campaign account charitable donations intended to provide relief for city residents.

Safe is always better than sorry. Flint has a poor track record, both for the short and long term, of managing its affairs.

Fortunately, it appears that these missile strikes didn’t kill civilians.

But four years ago Trump also said, “What will we get for bombing Syria besides more debt and a possible longterm conflict?”

What changed? Just seeing pictures on TV? For years, we’ve tried to sort out who is on which side in Syria. Last week’s attack was an awfully fast switch to military action.

Both Democratic and Republican interventionists focus on Assad as the bad guy. Many have said getting rid of him will make the Syrian public less likely to side with ISIS. Maybe. But they’ve been completely wrong before about the aftermath of war. In Syria, dozens of factions are fighting each other. We don’t know the motives of all of them. Some rebels

Assad wants to crush are openly allied with ISIS. None of this makes Assad a good guy, but it means we don’t know what will replace him if he gets toppled.

Fourteen years ago, many people thought nothing could be worse for Iraq than Saddam Hussein. The groups unleashed when Saddam fell were worse.

Before that, our support of “freedom fighters” in Afghanistan helped arm the Taliban and eventually ISIS. Today, they kill Americans with weapons American taxpayers paid for.

In Libya, Tucker reminds us, “The U.S. intervened with airstrikes to overthrow a terrible dictator but instead of unleashing freedom, the results unleashed a terror army that continues to spread violence and death. ... It is not enough merely to bomb a government or regime into disgrace, resignation or obliteration.

It is grossly irresponsible not to ask the question: what comes after?”

We don’t even know for certain that it was the Syrian president who used nerve gas.

He claims his regime attacked anti-government militias with conventional bombs, and one must have

hit gas that the militias themselves stored.

I don’t know whether that’s true, but I have a hard time being as confident as people such as McCain about what’s going on over in the Middle East.

Even if Assad was responsible for the nerve gas, it’s not obvious that using nerve gas is a more horrendous crime than fighting wars by other means. Nearly everyone seems to think so, and chemical weapons do drift in the air, making them more likely to kill civilians. But families torn apart by conventional bombs take little consolation in knowing that what killed their relatives wasn’t poison gas.

If Trump turns out to be like most past presidents, he’ll see his popularity rise because he took military action. George W. Bush’s approval rating spiked 10 percent after he invaded Iraq. When his father invaded, his approval rating jumped 28 percent.

Trump loves being popular. I fear his new slogan may be “Syria first, then North Korea, then...”

D-428 board member-elect prepared for turnaround

To the Editor: I am grateful to the voters in DeKalb who supported my candidacy for election to the DeKalb School District 428 Board. During my campaign, I made a number of commitments to the community that I intend to keep.

I promised to change the way in which we recruit and select district administrative staff. With the exception of hiring Dr. Brian Ali as superintendent two decades ago, our administrative history has been very poor.

I know I have a responsibility to be proactive in turning around the school district, both in the way it manages its business and the way it produces positive outcomes for a generous community that pays its bills.

Hiring a quality, diverse and highly competent outcome-based administrative staff will be where I begin my service to the DeKalb, Cortland and Malta communities, as well as the rural areas that are part of the district.

Keeping taxes where they are now will be another important goal.

During my term, I will continue to count on the support of the community and hope I will repay that support with decisive action that makes us a better place to live. Please let me know your ideas.

A less-than-awesome start to a career

To the Editor: April 26, now called Administrative Professionals Day, was previously called National Secretaries Day. Years ago, before I retired, the nomenclature changed, but the duties remained the same – dictation, typing, filing, etc.

In high school, I decided I wanted to be a secretary upon graduation.

After taking stenography and typing, I became a secretary in the high school superintendent’s office during study periods.

Other gals also worked for him, but the superintendent appointed me his No. 1 secretary. It was a no-pay job,

and we earned extracurricular points for performing clerical duties.

I shared the outer office with a football player who had broken his leg in football and could not navigate the stairs to the study hall.

When the superintendent announced that I was to be his No. 1 secretary, he said one of my duties would be to dust his desk each day. (Whoopee.) I was just 17.

I eagerly leaped to the task, knocking his Parker 51 pen off his desk! I can still see it stuck in the oak floor!

I picked it up and replaced it in its holder (although the point was now ruined); snickering was heard from the football player.

Next, the superintendent asked me to add up the figures he called out to me. The adding machine (pre-modern calculators) was an old relic that had a total button that you depressed while pulling the lever toward you to clear the machine. The lever came off and fell clattering to the floor; more chuckling from the football player.

Next, the superintendent dictated a letter that I took down in shorthand.

Preparing to transcribe my notes, I twirled paper into the typewriter.

When I hit the carriage return, (no automatic wraparounds back then) the typewriter plate sailed across the room.

More snickering. By now, my embarrassment was total.

Upon graduation, the football player presented me his photo, upon which he wrote “I’ll never forget you, the pen, the adding machine or the typewriter.”

I learned later he was responsible for the pranks, loosening the screws that held the adding machine lever and the typewriter plate on.

I confronted him at a high school reunion years later. Ironically, he did not recognize or remember me. But I never forgot him!

I’m happy to report, my secretarial career became a reality, despite the rocky beginning.

Happy Secretaries Day! (Sorry, it will always be that to me.)

Somehow, firing Tomahawk missiles at Syria suddenly changed people’s opinions of President Donald Trump. Now they call him a “serious” leader.

William Kristol said Trump’s action “reassures you.”

Sens. Lindsey Graham and John McCain, long critical of Trump, now say he “deserves the support of the American people.”

Politicians from France, the U.K., the EU, Turkey, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Australia expressed their support. So did Hillary Clinton.

“Why is war such an alluring illusion?” asked Jeffrey Tucker of the Foundation for Economic Education.

“Good intentions are never enough to justify government intervention in anything. This is especially true in war, the meanest, deadliest and most destructive government program ever conceived. And yet we keep doing it.”

Trump said pictures of Syrian children killed by nerve gas moved him to order the attack. His supporters said launching the missiles was the “moral” thing to do.

But Syria’s dictator killed more children in the past.

In 2013, after a horrible chemical attack, Trump tweeted, “Do not attack

GENOA – Mary McCausland sat at a long table with about a dozen other Genoa-Kingston athletes Wednesday night for a signing ceremony.

Placards adorned the table, with all the usual sports represented – baseball, softball, soccer, football and so on. But McCausland’s was one of a kind.

Riding horses since she was a child, McCausland signed to compete in equestrian at Delaware State.

“I started riding when I was really young, but really got into it when I was 7,” McCausland said. “Then I just stuck with it.”

McCausland’s mother, Susan, is a rider as well. But where she does the Western style – more of the cowboy, rodeo style – Mary McCausland fell into the English style, jumping fences instead of barrels.

Mary McCausland said she was about 7 when she decided to do the more classic riding style.

“I had this poster in my room forever, of this little girl jumping,” McCausland said. “I thought that looked really cool. So I told my mom I wanted to try that. I took a lesson, I took another lesson, and it just took off.”

McCausland competes under both the United States Equestrian Federation and the United States Hunter/ Jumper Association. She and her horse, NH Artion, took fourth last week at the World Equestrian Winter Finale in Wilmington, Ohio.

“I was very pleased. I was happy with my horse,” McCausland said. “Hopefully, it will just keep getting better from there.”

She has two horses she alternates showing, she said, but that’s going to end once she heads to Delaware State in Dover. At the collegiate level, riders are assigned a horse before the competition, one they haven’t competed with before.

“It’s solely based on your skill as a rider,” McCausland said. “You have to be on top of your game and confident about what you’re doing.

“It’s like the luck of the draw. ‘Okay, here you go. ...’ ” Seventeen colleges have a Division I equestrian program, according to a list on the sports’ website. The NCAA adopted equestrian as a sport in 1998,

“It will definitely test my skill as a rider,” McCausland said. “Hopefully, I have what it takes to not screw it up too bad. Whenever I’m at the barn, I try to get extra rides on horses I haven’t been on to improve, to get an idea of what it will feel like.”

bmiles@dailyherald.com CHICAGO – The early season skews the numbers in baseball, both high and low. Right now, the Cubs are sporting some anemic batting averages, but manager Joe Maddon is trusting in the process, and for the most part, the process is grinding away.

Cubs batters continue to work good at-bats, and if that continues, the results should follow. It was all on display Friday at Wrigley Field despite a 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Cubs, whose rallying cry last year was “We never quit,” took it down to the wire, loading the bases after two were out in the bottom of the ninth inning. But Ben Zobrist bounced into a forceout to end the game.

“We put ourselves in a position to get a chance in the last few innings to tie the game at least,” said Zobrist, who is off to a 6-for-32 (.188) start. “Right now with a lot of us, I think the rhythm isn’t quite there yet at the plate. It’s kind of early in the season. It’s chilly. It’s kind of been tough to get it going this week for everybody a little bit. But I like how we battled late in the game.”

Zobrist’s on-base percentage is .333.

He’s not the only one with a low batting average and a good OBP. Kyle Schwarber started the ninth-inning comeback attempt with a two-out walk.

Hendricks wasn’t blaming the rust

factor for not having his normal sharpness.

“I don’t really think that’s any of the reasoning behind it,” he said. “It’s just one of those things. You come in and out of it, out of your zone a little bit. Obviously last year, about midway through, I obviously found that zone and kind of ran with it. It’s still early, just kind of trying to find my way into it.

“Really today, I was happy with the better command of my fastball, so I can see it coming along. Hopefully just a couple more.”

Veteran Duensing plays first game at Wrigley Field

bmiles@dailyherald.com CHICAGO – Brian Duensing has been in the big leagues since 2009, but he had never been to Wrigley Field until Friday.

“I’ve been in pro ball a long time, but somehow I’ve missed Wrigley every time,” he said. “This is my first time at Wrigley all together, so I’m excited about that.”

The Cubs activated the 34-year-old left-hander from the 10-day disabled list Friday and placed right-handed reliever Carl Edwards Jr. on the be-

reavement list. There was a death in Edwards’ family.

Until signing with the Cubs as a free agent in December, Duensing had been a career American Leaguer, having pitched for the Minnesota Twins from 2009 to 2015 and for the Baltimore Orioles last year.

He made his Cubs regular-season debut in Friday’s 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, pitching a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Duensing had been on the 10day disabled list because of lower-back tightness. On a rehab assignment at Triple-A Iowa, Duensing made two appearances, pitching three scoreless

innings with no walks and five strikeouts.

“I feel good,” he said. “I feel fine.

Back’s good. Arm’s good. Everything’s so far, so good.”

Duensing got to know his new teammates in spring training.

“I get the vibe that they’re going to do it again, but not like in a cocky or braggy way,” he said. “We’re going to go out here, and we’re going to have fun. We’re going to take care of business, and we’re going to have fun doing it. That’s just kind of the vibe I got from them.”

Happ-y days at Iowa: Top prospect Ian Happ entered Friday’s game for Iowa with five home runs. That led the organization. Happ, a second baseman and outfielder, was the Cubs’ first-round draft pick in 2015.

Duensing got a good look at Happ during his rehab assignment.

“He’s incredible,” Duensing said.

“He’s an incredible player. Even better, he’s a good person. He’s fun to pull for. When he puts the ball in play, it makes a little bit different sound off his bat than some other guys.”

Already serving life, Hernandez acquitted in slayings

BOSTON – Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez, already serving a life sentence for a 2013 murder, was acquitted Friday in a 2012 double slaying prosecutors said was fueled by his anger over a drink spilled at a nightclub.

The former New England Patriots tight end choked back tears as the verdicts were read in court.

A few moments later, he looked

back at his fiancée and nodded somberly as relatives of the victims sobbed loudly. A defense attorney hugged him.

After six days of deliberations, the jury found Hernandez Aaron Hernandez not guilty of first-degree murder in the killings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado but convicted him of unlawful

possession of a gun.

The judge sentenced him to an additional four to five years in prison, separate from his existing life sentence.

Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said the victims’ families were devastated by the verdicts and by the defense’s portrayal of the men as “gang bangers” and “drug dealers.”

“These were two hardworking, humble, Cape Verdean immigrants,” Conley said. “It was unnecessary, and it was wrong, and it shouldn’t have

been done.”

Conley said prosecutors and the families take solace in the fact Hernandez is serving a life sentence in the killing of Odin Lloyd, a semi-professional football player who was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancée. Prosecutors in the double murder trial weren’t allowed to mention his conviction in Lloyd’s case.

Conley said one of the victims’ relatives said, “At least he’s not walking out the door today.”

CHICAGO – In the middle of Friday’s practice at the United Center, Jonathan Toews stick-handled a couple times, shimmied his way past an imaginary defender, roofed a shot over an imaginary goaltender, then celebrated the imaginary feat – pirouetting with his stick raised high above his head.

So no, a 1-0 series deficit isn’t going to rattle the Blackhawks.

“We’ve been in every spot – good spots, tough spots, awful spots,” coach Joel Quenneville said. “Losing the first game is not what we’re looking for.

Home ice is something that’s special.

But we find we’re consistent in how we play, and we feel we get better as series go on.”

The Hawks aren’t panicking and rending garments over Thursday night’s 1-0 loss to the Nashville Predators in Game 1. They did enough good things against the trapping Predators, and have surmounted enough obstacles over the past eight seasons, to know better.

But look beyond the intangibles and the history, and there are clear signs that betray a certain unease about their current situation.

The mere fact that the Hawks practiced Friday is noteworthy. It’s only the second midseries practice Quenneville has held since the start of the 2014 postseason, spanning nine series.

Quenneville was unhappy enough with his team’s lack of net-front presence in what the Hawks dismissively regarded as an “easy” shutout for Pekka Rinne that he held an extremely rare on-ice workout focusing largely on tips and deflections.

Then there’s the knee-jerk benching, and demotion, of rookie Nick

said. “I thought I could have held on to the puck a little bit more. I don’t know if I was nervous or what I was, but I just felt like I was just getting rid of the puck when I had it. That’s not what I’m accustomed to, so hopefully I can learn from that and bounce back.”

Schmaltz was noticeably better later in the game, but the patience Quenneville afforded rookies all season? It doesn’t exist in the playoffs.

“Q likes to change the lines,” Panik said with a shrug. I played with [Hartman] and [Toews] during the season.

We should get used to each other on the first shifts, and from there, I think we’ll be fine.”

Quenneville also showed little faith in his fourth line, a staple of the Hawks’ three recent Stanley Cup-winning teams. John Hayden played only 5:39 and will be replaced by Dennis Rasmussen in Game 2. Jordin Tootoo played only 5:29, with Patrick Kane double-shifting regularly with Tanner Kero as the Hawks chased the lead.

Taken individually, the rare practice, the immediate tinkering of lines that had been largely set for more than two months, the overuse of the top-nine forwards, even Quenneville’s admission that the Hawks – who love to carry the puck into the offensive zone with speed – will have to resort to dumping-and-chasing to get through the Predators’ 1-4 and 1-3-1 neutral-zone traps – are minor developments.

But taken together, after only one game, it’s a clear sign of just how seriously the Hawks took that Game 1 loss, and just how difficult a series they know they’re in for.

“We all got a taste of playoff hockey [Thursday] night,” Quenneville said.

“Now we’ve got to do something about it.”

MINNEAPOLIS – The White Sox on April 14, 2017, will be an answer to a baseball trivia question.

With Willy Garcia in left field, Leury Garcia in center and Avisail Garcia in right, the Sox featured three players with the same name starting in the same outfield for the first time in baseball history when they played the Twins on Friday night at Target Field. A rain delay made everyone wait for a moment that seemed more coincidental and trivial than historic in the White Sox’s 2-1 win.

But still.

“Everybody talked about it,” said Sox manager Rick Renteria, who gets the credit for penciling in the names. “It’s pretty cool. Kind of coincidence, but it’s neat.”

Butler ready to face high-scoring Thomas

CHICAGO – Jimmy Butler doesn’t know when, doesn’t know where, but he knows it’s coming.

At some point, Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg will give him that nod.

And then it’s on.

Not only will the three-time All-Star be set loose on guarding Boston’s biggest scoring threat in point guard Isaiah Thomas, but he’s looking forward to it.

“Especially what he’s done this year for that team,’’ Butler said after the Friday practice. “I know it’s going to come at some point and time.

“I’m going to make it tough for him. For anybody I’m guarding. But not just me, it’s going to be a team effort. I’m going to get beat at times, and I’m going to need guys to be there. ... But I look forward to that challenge. I want that.’’

And Butler will get it.

It’s simple math, really. The 5-foot-9 Thomas also just happens to be the Celtics’ best scorer with 28.9 points a game, as well as their best finisher, averaging 9.8 points in the fourth quarter.

The 6-7 Butler also just happens to be the Bulls’ best defender, and not afraid to try to shut down any player on the planet.

“I’m a physical player, so that’s all that I know,” Butler said when asked how Thomas can expect to be defended by him. “He is a quick little guy.

But I’m not slow, either. So I can keep up with a lot of them. But yeah, be physical. That’s how I play defense anyway. How many fouls do I get, six? I get six fouls, so I think I’ll be all right.’’

Butler was asked whether it’s harder to guard players smaller in stature, and pointed out he

doesn’t discriminate. His goal is to shut down anyone he’s guarding, no matter the size.

“First of all, I’m 6-7 and ¾ – don’t ever forget that,’’ Butler said, correcting his listed height.

“I mean, however tall [Thomas] is, he’s been that height for a long time now, so he’s mastered it …

5-8, 6-8, whatever he is, the guy knows how to put the ball in the basket. You’ve got to guard whoever, whether they’re 5-8 or 6-8.

“Or 6-7¾.”

Hoiberg did admit that they have discussed a certain time of the game in which Butler would move to Thomas, as well as the idea that if Thomas gets hot early, it’s all subject to change.

“We do have a plan in place, but obviously you have to adjust if things are going in the wrong direction, but we do have a plan on how we are going to try to slow [Thomas] down a little bit, which is obviously difficult to do with the No. [3] scorer in the NBA this year,” Hoiberg said.

haps even a 60-day signing window in the fall, to address growing concerns about several issues – including staged signing day spectacles.

Some contended the early visit period should be limited to April, but representatives from the Student-Athlete Advisory Council won the fight to make it three months.

Another measure would limit FBS schools to signing more than 25 recruits each year, an effort to eliminate the issue of “oversigning.”

Exceptions will be made for current players who have attended classes for at least two years and athletes who suffer incapacitating injuries.

The council also approved a proposal to cap contact practices to once daily – no more “two-a-days” with hitting – that would take effect immediately upon approval.

The two-year waiting period on hires applies to before and after the athlete’s enrollment at the school. That has provision was adopted in men’s basketball in 2010.

More changes could be coming next year, too.

Bowlsby said his committee may look to redefine what constitutes a “full” practice and a standardized 14week format that would require two byes for each FBS team.

“All of this is getting dumped into a bucket that we will look to build on for the coming year,” he said.

Other rules changes up for final approval by the board include: • Limiting FBS coaches to participating in camps and clinics to 10 days in June and July, and the camps must take place on a school’s campus or in facilities regularly used by the school for practice or play.

• Allowing coaches employed at a camp or clinic to have recruiting conversations with prospects.

• Prohibiting official visits from taking place in conjunction with a prospect’s participation at a school camp or clinic.

• Requiring graduate students to complete six degree-applicable hours each term to remain eligible.

• Adding a 10th assistant football coach, which would not go into effect until after the upcoming season.

INDIANAPOLIS – College football recruiting is on the verge of getting a whole new look before the end of this year.

The NCAA’s Division I Council approved a sweeping package Friday that would allow players to sign with schools as early as December, allow high school juniors to take official visits from April through June and impose a two-year waiting period before Bowl Subdivision schools can hire people close to recruits to non-coaching positions.

If the package is approved by the Board of Governors on April 26, the signing period change would take effect Aug. 1. The Collegiate Commissioners Association also would have to approve the dates, a move expected to happen in June.

Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said he expects broad support from both groups.

“There were disagreements, there were compromises but at the end of

the day, I think we’ve come up with the most comprehensive and impactful package we’ve had in football in 25 or 30 years,” Bowlsby said. “I think the outcomes are consistent with the board’s directive, and I’ll be quite surprised if it isn’t adopted on the same basis that we approved it at the council level.”

Reaching this point certainly wasn’t easy.

Bowlsby acknowledged that the Division I football oversight committee, which he chairs, couldn’t get anywhere close to majority support for an early signing date in previous years.

This time, with input from the coaches’ association, athletic department officials, school leaders and athletes, the vote was almost unanimous.

The final tally on the overall package was 14-1, with Conference USA dissenting.

There had been talk of having two early signing periods – June and December. But the coaches balked at the summer proposal.

Options to treat Osteoarthritis pain Dear Doctor: I’m 55 years old and a former marathon runner. Now my right hip hurts all the time, not only when I walk but also when I’m lying down. I can’t even sleep on my right side any more. I was told I need a hip replacement. What does that entail?

Dear Reader: You’ve described several of the signs and symptoms that make discussing the option of a hip replacement with your doctor a good idea. The goal of the procedure is to address chronic hip pain, increase mobility, return patients to normal activities and restore quality of life. But before you go booking an O.R., let’s talk about the operation, as well as possible alternatives.

Hip replacement is a surgical procedure that replaces the diseased or damaged portions of the hip joint with an artificial joint, known as the prosthesis.

An estimated 332,000 individuals undergo hip replacement surgery in the United States each year. The surgery is most common among people with osteoarthritis, a degenerative disease that causes joint cartilage to wear away over time.

The hip joint becomes rough and ragged, and the ensuing friction causes both pain and stiffness. Rheumatoid arthritis, injury and fractures can also cause sufficient damage to merit a full replacement of the hip joint.

After documenting your symptoms, your doctor will order imaging tests, beginning with an X-ray, to get a detailed image of your hip joint. He or she will be looking for changes to the bone, signs of narrowing of the joint space and the formation of bone spurs. In some cases, an MRI or a CT scan may be ordered as well.

Before focusing on hip replacement as a solution, we help our patients explore other options for dealing with the pain and lack of mobility. These include physical therapy,

Some people try supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin for pain relief. These and any other nutritional or herbal supplements always should be reported to your physician to guard against possible drug interactions.

Hip replacement surgery takes about one to two hours to perform. An orthopedic surgeon removes the diseased and damaged bone and cartilage and an artificial hip is implanted in its place. A prosthetic socket is implanted into the pelvic bone, and a prosthetic ball replaces the rounded top of the femur. Patients often are surprised when they’re asked to sit up and even take a few steps with a walker the day after surgery, which is to deal with the increased risk of blood clots.

After the surgery, patients must work with a physical therapist to rehabilitate the hip. They are given stretching, flexing and strengthening exercises, which they must continue to do on their own to assure the best recovery and results. They also must watch for potential complications like blood clots, infection, dislocation and a discrepancy in leg length.

Full recovery after hip replacement surgery takes three to six months. For the best chance of success, be scrupulous about rehab, and don’t try to do too much.

Abby, her entire focus is on us. She walks right into our home, although she has been asked several times not to. She goes through my things and takes whatever she wants without asking. When he is here, she comes over, walks in, and if we have company, thinks she should join our guests.

How should South play in six or seven hearts after West leads the club king?

The given auction was uniformly popular with the robots (computer-controlled opponents). I believe a human would have been more circumspect over two hearts. Agreed, it seems as though four hearts will be the right spot, but that prime 15-count has slam potential if South’s heart suit is robust. North might rebid three clubs. Here, South would continue with three spades. Then North could envision South’s holding queen-third of spades and ace-kingqueen-sixth of hearts, which would give a good play for seven hearts. If hearts are 3-2, you can handle a 4-1 spade break, but the converse is not necessarily true in seven spades.

In seven hearts, South should win the first trick with the club ace and immediately take a heart finesse.

Here, when it succeeds, declarer plays a spade to dummy’s king, repeats the finesse, draws trumps and cruises home.

One might well adopt the same line in six hearts, but there is a case for cashing the heart ace and king.

If the queen drops, great. If not, you hope the defender with the heart queen has three spades so that the club losers can disappear on the diamond ace and fourth spade. But here the 4-1 heart break kills that line.
