Survivors recall 1967 tornado The April 2015 tornado that devastated Fairdale and the surrounding countryside is fresh in people’s memories, but the most deadly EF4 twister to ever hit this area was April 21, 1967.

That storm killed 24 people, 13 of them students in 12 buses in front of Belvidere High School. The buses were loaded with children from elementary and junior high school whom they had picked up first.

Vi Tewksbury of Genoa found the newspapers from the day after that tragedy and recently shared them with me. Her late husband, Roy, was part of the G-K Rescue Squad, which responded to the disaster. She was among the employees at Automatic Electric in Genoa who collected canned goods and other needed items to deliver to the Red Cross.

Other Genoa-area residents were affected by the storm, and some worked at the Belvidere Chrysler plant, where 300 new cars and about 100 employee vehicles were totaled. In DeKalb, the Glidden Grade School had to be closed because of heavy wind damage to the roof.

Looking for a first-person account, I got help from former Genoa classmate George Quigley, who put me in touch with Dan Potter. He was 13 years old and a sixth-grade student at Washington Grade School at the time. Potter was in one of the 12 school buses that were near the front of the high school at 3:50 p.m. when it happened.

He said the bus was picked up, turned on its side, then slammed back down to the ground.

When rescue workers came to get them out, Potter was the only one still in his seat; he was so scared he gripped the seating so hard his hands had torn through the covering.

Just before the tragedy, a police officer had pulled up to the bus and warned them the funnel cloud was coming, but nothing could be done in the seconds that followed. Dan said the bus windows shattered and glass was strewn all over. He was lucky, as were five of his siblings at the scene, all of whom were able to go home that day instead of the hospital.

The survivors were rushed inside the heavily damaged school, first to the library, then, when its ceiling started to come down, into the cafeteria. There they stayed until the “all clear” was given.

Potter’s father had driven to the area but could not get through the blocked-off streets, so he walked the rest of the way to get him and his brothers and sisters and take them home to Garden Prairie.

Potter and others who lived through the storm still talk about it today. He plans to go to the 50th anniversary remembrance April 21 at the high school. A large stainless steel sculpture of a twister stands there, with 24 names of those lost that day engraved on it.

TODAY’S TALKER U.S. hits Afghanistan with largest non-nuclear bomb ever used

WASHINGTON – U.S. forces in Afghanistan on Thursday struck an Islamic State tunnel complex in eastern Afghanistan with “the mother of all bombs,” the largest non-nuclear weapon ever used in combat by the U.S. military, Pentagon officials said.

The bomb, known officially as a GBU-43B, or massive ordnance air blast weapon, unleashes 11 tons of explosives. When it was developed in the early 2000s the Pentagon did a formal review of legal justification for its combat use.

The U.S. military headquarters in Kabul said in a statement that the bomb was dropped at 7:32 p.m. local time Thursday on a tunnel complex in Achin district of Nangarhar province, where the Afghan affiliate of the Islamic State group has been operating.

The target was close to the Pakistani border.

Adam Stump, a Pentagon spokesman, said the bomb was dropped from a U.S. Air Force MC130 transport, which he said had been brought to Afghanistan “some time ago” for potential use.

DeKalb residents request more information on effectiveness of funding

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Members of the public criticized the lack of transparency in tax increment financing discussions during a meeting Thursday with local taxing bodies on the effectiveness of TIF funding.

TIF figures from fiscal 2016 show that the Central Area TIF fund, which is expected to expire in 2022, collected $6 million in property tax dollars and had nearly $7 million in expenditures and transfers that year. TIF 2, which expires next year, collected about $1.2 million in property taxes and only spent about $480,000.

Kay Shelton, president of the League of Women Voters, said she was not thrilled about the Joint Review Board, a group of representatives from local taxing bodies, holding a public meeting on the spending at 8:30 a.m. on a Thursday.

“When you want participation from the public, you don’t do it when someone would have to take a day off,” Shelton said. “There are more government units in Illinois than anywhere else, and this is a pretty good example of its inefficiency.”

DeKalb’s two TIF districts, which encompass most of the commercial property in the area, allow property tax dollars to be capped for all taxing bodies within the district, and funds above the cap are diverted into a special account reserved for rehabilitating blighted areas. This has amounted to between $6 million and $8 million annually in recent years.

The Central Area TIF, or TIF 1, began in fiscal 2016 – which went from July 1, 2015, to June 30, 2016 – with nearly $2.6 million. It used its more than $6 million in property tax dollars for plumbing improvements to the Egyptian Theatre, interior work at the Nehring Home of the Elwood House and other projects.

Some residents requested detailed analysis on projects funded with TIF to determine what has been successful and what has not.

“That’s been one of the basic questions I’ve had on TIF,” former DeKalb Mayor Bessie Chronopoulos said.

“How can we continue funding projects without really doing a thorough vetting analysis of past projects to see what the return was? You can’t contin-

The city’s second TIF district started with $7.6 million and added another $1.2 million from property taxes, which was used for roof replacement

and unit remodeling at Barb City Manor, multiple office improvements at the DeKalb Municipal Building and other expenditures.

This district ended the fiscal year with more than $8.4 million on hand.

Since TIF funds can be transferred from district to district, $6 million is anticipated to be transferred from TIF 2 to the Central Area TIF, DeKalb Mayor John Rey said.

DeKalb Economic Development Planner Jason Michnick said no plans have been made for how this additional funding for the central TIF district, which comprises most of downtown DeKalb, would be allocated.

Last year, the city conducted a series of meetings hosted by aldermen of wards within or near a TIF district to gain public input on how TIF funds could be used to reinvest in properties.

Although numerous ideas were posted on the city’s website, Chro-

nopoulos said she was disappointed there was no additional follow-up on implementing these suggestions.

“Why were there ward meetings to gather input if there was no follow-up on any process to implement those ideas?” she asked. “It seemed like a vast majority of people want to see an investment in infrastructure.”

Michnick said the feedback from the meetings will be taken into consideration in developing strategies and programs on how to bring DeKalb’s housing market back to pre-recession levels.

In fiscal 2017, TIF funding already has been reserved for two projects in the downtown area. The $7.5 million Cornerstone project at the corner of First Street and Lincoln Highway will receive $3 million in TIF funding, and the $1.2 million restoration of the former Moxie building at 230 E. Lincoln Highway will receive up to $400,000 in TIF dollars.

New D-428 board members ready

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Restructuring $108 million in bond debt, hiring a new superintendent and improving perception of local schools are some of the issues newly elected DeKalb School District 428 Board members face.

Jeff Hallgren, Valerie Peña Hernandez and Victoria Newport all won election April 4, with Hallgren leading the nine candidates actively campaigning for the three open seats with 16.85 percent of the vote. Hernandez finished with 15.32 percent, and Newport with 14.93 percent, according to unofficial results.

The Illinois Association of School Boards is assisting the district in its search for a replacement for Superintendent Doug Moeller, who has been on leave since September after he was accused of sexual harassment last year.

Throughout his campaign, Hallgren voiced his displeasure with the board’s decision to start the search process before new school board members could be seated.

“The school board needs to give consideration in slowing the process so new members can be a part of the process, and I will make every effort to open it back up,” Hallgren said. “Selecting a superintendent is the most important decision I can make as a board member, and I’m determined to make the best decision possible.”

Hernandez said a qualified candidate should be capable of closing student achievement gaps, and have proven that capability in work with other districts.

“The superintendent must also be visible throughout the community,” she said. “They should also be someone who is available at social events so people get to know that person and can build a relationship and rapport with the community. That is one of the main things I find to be very important.”

Newport, the board’s president, said Hallgren and Hernandez will bring good, new ideas to the district.

She said it will be crucial to get them up to speed not only on the superintendent search process, but for plans to replace DeKalb High School Principal Michele Albano and Human Resources Director Jim Bormann, whose contracts were not renewed by the board in February.

“We have created informational sheets to give to county employers to show what our schools have to offer,” Newport said. “Maybe we can also work with an intern from NIU and use journalism and photography classes to get the word out on what is going on in

schools to show the reality versus the perception.”

Hernandez said improving the district’s image not only involves mending relationships outside the district but from within, as well.

“We have to be the leading example of what we want in our buildings,” Hernandez said. “As a board, we must have a relationship with community members as well as secretaries, food

service and administration. They all have to feel we have a collaborative relationship with them.”

Hallgren said he hopes to restructure the district’s administration.

The new board members will take their oaths at 7 p.m. at the school board’s May 2 meeting at DeKalb High School, 501 W. Dresser Road in DeKalb.

Once the new members are seated, the board will vote to appoint a new board president, vice president and secretary.

Hallgren said as the candidate with the most votes, he will push to become board president.

Carol J. Hamilton Scott, 82, Rockford, passed away Monday, April 10, 2017, at SwedishAmerican Hospital due to complications after surgery.

She was born September 13, 1934, in Eldora, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Altha (Warburg) Peterson. Carol lived in Rockford since 1952, coming from Waterman. She married Marshall Hamilton in Rockford on October 7, 1956. He passed away in Rockford on March 26, 2010.

She married Richard B. Scott in Rockford on November 8, 2003. He passed away on January 11, 2016. Carol worked as an Orthopedic Nurse at SwedishAmerican Hospital for 28 years, retiring in January, 2004. She was a member of Court Street United Methodist Church. Carol

enjoyed traveling, playing cards, cross stitching, and going antiquing with her friends. She liked watching sports on television, especially college basketball, and was an avid Cubs fan.

Carol loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren.

Survived by her children, Victoria (Scott) Brean of Rockford, Thomas Hamilton of Bandon, OR, and Christine (Jeffrey) LaMantia of Rockford; her grandchildren, Joseph and Alison LaMantia; step-children, Richard (Dee) Scott, Muskegon, MI, Robert (Kay) Scott, Grand Rapids, MI, Charles (Polly) Scott, West Chester, PA, Susan Scott Wilkening, Harvard, IL; step-grandchildren, James (Kristin) Scott, Randee (Craig) Bowder, Troy (Meribeth) Wolffis, Todd (Debbie) Wolffis, Carrie (Brent) Southland, Jeff (Nicole) Scott, Darcy Scott, Katy Scott, Avery (Patty) Wilkening, Zachary Wilkening, and Nathan (Kyla) Wilkening; many step-great-grandchildren; her brother, Lloyd Peterson, and many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her parents; her husband, Marshall Hamilton; and her husband, Richard Scott; her brother, Richard Peterson and his wife, Janice.

$30 million in apartments sold Cornerstone buildings acquired

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Several apartment buildings in the northwest part of DeKalb sold for more than $30 million at the end of March to a Normal-based company, records show.

Hunter Normal Properties LLC acquired the properties March 31 with sale prices ranging from $410,000 to nearly $9.8 million, according to DeKalb County property transaction records.

Most of the buildings are located on Aspen Court, Russell Road, Spiros Court and Pappas Drive. Sellers of the properties included Jonathan P. Sauser, Paul S. Sauser, Jill S. Kelly and Joseph P. Sauser, records show.

A day earlier, the building where Barb City Bagels operates at 122 S. First St., which is being sought for demolition to make room for the $7.5 million Cornerstone project, was sold for $475,000, records show.

With this acquisition, the only remaining building involved with the project whose sale is yet to be reported is the vacant Otto’s building at 118 W. Lincoln Highway, which the city has sought to have repaired or demolished in the past.

The building at 122 E. Lincoln Highway that houses the Mediterraneo restaurant was sold for $188,000, and the former Glitter building at 124 E. Lincoln Highway was sold for about $101,000.

Volunteers are needed to help with The Wall That Heals, a replica of the Vietnam War Memorial, which will return from July 13 to 16 in Sycamore Park. Volunteers are needed to educate visitors about the wall, guard it and set up American flags.

McGuan said organizers doubted they would bring the wall back, as Vietnam veterans were getting older.

However, a younger veteran of the Iraq War convinced everyone it was time to recognize their service once more and pay a proper tribute.

McGuan said one of the biggest problems at this point will be getting enough volunteers to sign up. They’re needed to educate visitors about the wall, set up American flags representing Illinois veterans who died in Vietnam and work security.

Since its debut in 1996, the traveling memorial wall has been on display in nearly 500 communities around the U.S.

SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Veterans Tribute Group is “in very good shape” to bring back a Vietnam War Memorial replica, project organizer Renee McGuan said.

McGuan said more than $20,000 has been raised toward the $25,000 needed to transport The Wall That Heals to Sycamore and cover things such as school field trips, sound equipment, seating, staging and publicity.

The wall is a 250-foot replica of the memorial in Washington, D.C., and bears the names of more than 58,000 service men and women who died serving in Vietnam, including 19 names from DeKalb County.

It will be in Sycamore Park, 24 hours a day, from July 13 until 3 p.m. July 16, and volunteers are needed to help with the display.

McGuan, a member of the DeKalb County chapter of VietNow, was part of the effort to bring the wall to Sycamore in 1997 and 2007. Her husband, Joe McGuan, was a Vietnam veteran who died from a service-related disability in 2006.

She said when he came home from Vietnam, he initially did not talk about his service or get involved in working with other veterans. In 1991, the couple visited the memorial in Washington, D.C. “It changed his life,” she said. “He realized he was not the only person dealing with the negative connotations of serving in Vietnam, so he got involved.”

Lawyer: Dragged man lost 2 teeth, broke nose

CHICAGO – The passenger dragged from a United flight lost two front teeth and suffered a broken nose and a concussion, his lawyer said Thursday, accusing the airline industry of having “bullied” its customers for far too long.

“Are we going to continue to be treated like cattle?” attorney Thomas Demetrio asked.

The passenger, Dr. David Dao, has been released from a hospital but will need reconstructive surgery, Demetrio said at a news conference, appearing alongside one of Dao’s children. Dao was not there.

The 69-year-old physician from Elizabethtown, Kentucky, was removed by police from the United Express flight Sunday at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport after refusing to give up his seat on the full plane to make room for four airline employees.

Prosecutors: Slain judge’s girlfriend was robbery target

CHICAGO – A man charged in the shooting death of a Chicago judge told detectives that he and his partner were trying to rob the judge’s girlfriend, who was wounded in the attack, prosecutors said Thursday.

Joshua T. Smith, 37, gave a videotaped statement to police in which he said his partner watched the movements of Cook County Associate Judge Raymond Myles’ girlfriend for several weeks before Monday morning’s robbery attempt.

Myles, 66, was killed in the shooting.

His girlfriend was shot in the leg and is expected to survive.

Early on, United CEO Oscar Munoz added to the furor when he apologized for the incident but accused Dao of being belligerent. Later, Munoz offered a more emphatic mea culpa, saying, “No one should ever be mistreated this way.”

He promised to review the airline’s policies to make sure something like that never happens again, and said United will no longer use police to remove

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois travelers now can access real-time information on road closures, construction and winter weather conditions through a revamped state website.

The Illinois Department of Transportation said Wednesday the redesigned “Getting Around Illinois” website now is mobile-friendly and continuously updated.

Users also are able to zoom in to view a location, roadway or destination. The previous website offered simply a static map of a broad area.

The site also provides information on traffic congestion, hotel and gas station locations and weather radar.

Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn said the new-and-improved

United had selected Dao and three other passengers at random for removal from the plane after unsuccessfully offering $800 in travel vouchers and a hotel stay to customers willing to give up their seats.

Man receives $13M in suit over wrongful conviction

CHICAGO – A federal jury awarded $13 million to a man who spent 21 years in prison after signing a murder confession allegedly manufactured by Chicago police and Cook County prosecutors.

And for all his usual bluster, he’s startlingly candid about the reason: He’s just now really learning about some of them.

“After listening for 10 minutes, I realized it’s not so easy,” the president said after a discussion with Chinese President Xi Jinping that included his hopes that China’s pressure could steer North Korea away from its nuclear efforts.

“I felt pretty strongly that they had a tremendous power” over North Korea, he said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. “But it’s not what you would think.”

That’s just one of several recent comments offering insight into what looks like a moderate makeover for an immoderate president. As he approaches 100 days in office he appears to be increasingly embracing what he describes as his “flexibility” – acknowledging he may not have thought deeply about some of the issues he shouted about throughout his political campaign.

In the past 48 hours, the outsider politician who pledged to upend Washington has: • Abandoned his vow to label China a currency manipulator.

• Rethought his hands-off assessment of the Syrian conflict – and ordered a missile attack.

• Turned his warm approach toward Vladimir Putin decidedly chilly and declared U.S.-Russia relations “may be at an all-time low.”

• Decided NATO isn’t actually obsolete, as he had claimed.

• Realized the U.S. Export-Import Bank is worth keeping around.

Allies describe Trump as merely growing in the job, taking what he’s learning and adapting. The White House, however, is struggling to explain some of the changes.

Asked about the growing list of reversals on Wednesday, spokesman Sean Spicer argued that NATO actually is “evolving toward the president’s position,” not the other way around, by focusing more on terrorism and encouraging nations to pay more toward defense.

What about flip-flops besides NATO? Spicer was asked.

NATO is actually moving toward Trump, he responded again. Next question.

Trump, who seemed to remain in campaign mode for months after the election, appears to be listening to different advisers now. His onetime campaign guru, Steve Bannon, has been somewhat marginalized while moderate voices grow louder.

It also may be that Trump is merely looking for a way to improve his low approval rating, acknowledging his best tactic could be switching to a less dogmatic, more pragmatic

approach.

“Candidates are always bombastic on the campaign trail – and Trump especially.

But there is some growing into the office and dealing with the real effects of some of the policies,” said Stephen Moore, a conservative economist who helped craft Trump’s economic plans.

On the other hand, he warned, “if he starts just abandoning his promises, then I think it’s going to exact a political toll.”

In many cases, Trump’s campaign talk appeared born from instinct and little else.

He was known as a candidate who rarely dug deep, and he employed few policy experts to inform his views.

He’s also long boasted of his flexibility, describing his positions as starting points for negotiation – although many of his core ideas, including frustrations over the U.S. trade imbalance, have held steady for years.

Trump, for instance, vowed to label China a currency manipulator, “They’re not currency manipulators,” he conceded in the Wall Street Journal interview, adding that he was concerned that officially branding them as such could jeopardize his talks with Beijing on confronting North Korea.

Don’t close door on wind power Most people agree that increasing the amount of energy we generate from renewable sources such as wind is a good idea.

That is, until someone plans to put wind turbines within sight of their home.

When wind turbines were proposed in DeKalb County in 2009, there was a marathon 19-hour public hearing that drew more than 700 people. Eventually the project, which led to the installation of more than 130 turbines across three townships, was approved.

This time, a San Diego company, EDF Renewable Energy, wants permission to build two wind testing towers to determine the viability of areas in South Grove Township for potential turbines.

Some people living in the area say they do not want the turbines near their property. As property owners, they have a right to be concerned about their property value and potential commercial interests.

County Board members have decided they will not approve any more wind power projects for 18 months, while they craft a renewable energy ordinance.

This seems like a prudent course of action, one that the county probably should have taken after the last wind power project.

But now that we’re here, a few things county officials should keep in mind: • Turbines should not be permitted to interfere with commerce, including blocking signals from local radio towers.

• There should be a maximum density of turbines allowed in a given area, such as a township.

• Companies that propose wind turbines should be required to offer property value protection to landowners within a certain distance of their projects (excluding those landowners who lease ground to them). If wind turbines lower the value of nearby property, the company should be required to make up the difference between the sale price of land and its objectively determined fair-market value.

The area where the latest wind power project is being considered is one of the most sparsely populated in DeKalb County.

South Grove Township, which Route 64 crosses on its way west to Ogle County, has about 500 people spread over 34 square miles.

There should be a way for wind power to coexist with the people in that space. EDF should be allowed to build its testing towers while the County Board works on a new ordinance.

If wind power can’t work in South Grove Township, it probably can’t work anywhere in DeKalb County, and the board members are wasting their time in creating an ordinance – all they need to do is pass a ban.

Although some who have appeared at public hearings for the testing towers would prefer that option, the public at large supports renewable energy, and we all know that our county sees its share of windy days. Farmland owners say extra income they generate through renting ground to turbine operators is important to their bottom line.

Our future as a society depends on clean energy. We need to learn to coexist with it, within reason.

We would like to see County Board members craft an ordinance that provides protection for people affected by new wind power projects while not making it impossible to expand wind power generation.

Suicide rate higher in rural areas

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a study in March that showed suicides on the rise between 1999 and 2015, with 600,000 Americans taking their lives.

The highest annual rate was in 2015, the last year for which data was available.

The authors found suicides increased across all levels of urbanization but noted a widening gap between urban and rural areas. In other words, they saw a trend where people were more likely to commit suicide in rural areas than in urban.

Preliminary numbers and the trend are similar for Tennessee. About 1,065 Tennesseans committed suicide in 2015, up from 945 recorded in 2014, said Scott Ridgway, executive director of the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network.

The federal researchers found that suicides increased during the study period from 11 per 100,000 population in 1999 to about 11.5 in 2015, or about 5 percent in large

central metropolitan areas.

In rural areas, the numbers increased from 15 per 100,000 population in 1999 to 22 per 100,000 in 2015, or about 32 percent.

Researchers attribute the increase and the trend in rise of rural suicides to a number of issues.

Those include limited access to mental health care, social isolation, the opioid overdose epidemic – because opioid misuse is associated with increased risk for suicide – and the economic recession.

People in rural areas often have no access to mental health facilities or services.

Ridgway said that not that long ago Tennessee had community health centers in every county. Now, you may have to drive two or three counties away from your home to get help because mental health professionals tend to establish practices near urban centers.

Rural areas by nature are isolating, and people don’t like to talk about mental health

issues or suicide for fear of being stigmatized.

That could be solved, Ridgway said, with training at clinics, emergency rooms and family practices.

Rural areas have been hit hard by the opioid epidemic, and the researchers suggested opioid misuse as increasing the risk of suicide. Ridgway said that because Tennessee doesn’t do toxicology tests on every suicide or every overdose death, it’s hard to determine how many were because of opiates.

The effect of a single suicide affects family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. In rural communities, the CDC report suggests it is a growing public health threat that needs a comprehensive preventive approach. Resources targeted toward rural communities, enhanced training for front-line health providers and relocation incentives for mental health professionals are ways we can begin to prevent suicides.

Clean up the much-abused H-1B visa system

The Trump administration is taking its first, cautious steps to clean up the much-abused H-1B visa system, by which skilled foreign workers are imported to fill jobs in the technology sector and other specialty occupations.

The moves so far, mainly involving tighter oversight, are fine but inadequate. Deeper reforms are needed for a program that, although vital to maintain the nation’s competitiveness, has been used to displace well-paid and older American workers with cheap and ostensibly temporary foreign labor and to turn some of those guest workers into virtual indentured servants.

As a candidate, Donald Trump talked out of both sides of his mouth, at differ-

ent points saying he favored importing skilled guest workers into the U.S. and saying he didn’t like it, citing well-documented instances of abuse.

Now, as president, Trump is starting to move. Just as tens of thousands of H-1B applications were filed last week, the administration announced that enforcement agents would intensify site visits to the companies that rely most heavily on the guest-workers program, especially Indian outsourcing firms that use it to import tens of thousands of information-tech workers annually.

The goal will be to ensure that the guest workers qualify as “specialty” labor, which is a requirement of H-1B visas.

At the same time, the Justice Depart-

ment announced it would not tolerate employer misuse of that program to discriminate against or displace American labor. Employers and some economists are at odds over the extent to which companies face a shortage of American workers to fill tech and other skilled jobs. Hence the importance of the H-1B program, which grants 85,000 visas annually to guest workers, nearly three-quarters of them from India – a fraction of the overall applications. Of that number, many have only bachelor’s degrees and are chosen by lottery; just 20,000 are foreign graduates of U.S. universities with advanced degrees.

Reforms are needed on several fronts. For starters, H-1B visa holders al-

ready in the country should be allowed to change jobs to prevent their exploitation by employers. More fundamentally, the program should be retooled to ensure that genuinely high-skilled labor is prioritized, not that of entry-level programmers. That may disadvantage the big Indian outsourcing firms that flood the system with applications; so be it.

The current minimum salary of $60,000 for some programmers and other H-1B recipients also must be raised to an amount closer to the prevailing wage for comparably skilled American workers, which is more than $100,000. Otherwise, the visas will be continue to be used in too many cases to push U.S. employees onto the unemployment rolls.

It started in 1939.

Nazi Germany launched its euthanasia program, using poison gas to kill people whose only crime was being mentally ill or physically disabled.

They were unworthy of life, the Nazis had determined.

After Adolf Hitler’s Nazis invaded the Soviet Union, in June 1941, they started using mobile vans to gas hundreds of thousands of people, most of them Jews, Roma and the mentally ill. The Nazis added the hermetically sealed vans to their arsenal after their rank-and-file murderers whined about the mental and physical toll of shooting so many women and children.

This was just the beginning.

That same year, the Nazis decided to wipe from the face of the earth all Jews – including their Jews, in Germany – by deporting them to killing centers and gassing them. The “Final Solution,” they called it, and Zyklon B was the gas of choice. At the height of the deportations, 6,000 Jews a day were gassed at Auschwitz.

By the end of World War II, the Nazis had killed more than 6 million Jews.

Calvary Lutheran to mark 100 years DAILY CHRONICLE On Easter Sunday, April 8, 1917, worshippers of what is now the Calvary Lutheran Church of rural Lee gathered for Sunday school and church services for the first time in their new building.

On Easter Sunday this year (April 16), the congregation will commemorate the century of Christian fellowship in the building. The day will celebrate Christ’s resurrection as well as the faith and foresight of those whose spiritual commitment led to the church’s construction.

The Rev. Martha Nelson will lead the Easter celebration with an early service at 8:15 a.m., followed by an Easter breakfast (free-will offering) at 9:30 a.m. Those present will gather outside and release helium-filled balloons about 10 a.m. A second service will be at 10:30 a.m.

A short video reviewing church highlights from the century will be shown at each service. An anniversary cake will provide a special, if unusual, menu item for the traditional Easter breakfast.

The church was founded in 1870, but the original building was struck by lightning and burned in 1914. Two churches – one Lutheran, another

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Kaneland starting pitcher Aly Jesionowski started to get butterflies.

An out away from her first seven-inning no-hitter, Jesionowski ended the game the same way she spent most of the day – getting a strikeout. She picked up her third strikeout of the inning and 14th of the game to close out a 3-0 victory over the Spartans on Thursday afternoon in Sycamore.

“Even warming up overhand, my arm felt 20 times better than any other game,” Jesionowski said. “It hit me (that I was pitching a no-hitter) around the sixth inning, I think. I went out there and thought, ‘Hang on, I don’t think anybody’s hit anything.’ ” Jesionowski said she threw a five-inning no-hitter last year in a blowout win for the Knights during their trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina – joking that Thursday was her first “real” no-hitter. She had at least two strikeouts against Sycamore in every inning except for the sixth, in which she didn’t have any. She struck out the side in the fourth and seventh innings.

Sycamore (4-7-1 overall, 2-3 Northern Illinois Big 12) only threatened once, when Jesionowski loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third after three walks. However, she got out of the jam by striking out the next two batters.

Acevado struck out nine batters and held the Barbs scoreless over the final four innings to take the win.

“My goal was to just stay calm and stay relaxed. Just attack the strike zone,” Acevado said, “I just wanted to keep the ball low and away as much as possible.”

Kaneland tied the game in the sixth inning with an RBI single by Robbie Dudzinski, knocking home shortstop Luke Calabrese.

The Barbs scored an early run in the first with aggressive base running, as shortstop Derek Kyler came home on an error after going from first to third on a hit-and-run. DeKalb wouldn’t cross home plate again as that was all the offense it could muster for the game.

“The plan was to jump on pitches early, get some base runners on, start moving a little bit,” DeKalb coach Dedric Wright said. “We were able to execute a hit-and-run early in the first inning, but from there we didn’t get much going on the bases and offensively.”

Beyond the stats: Acevado struck out the side in the first two innings he pitched on his way to nine strikeouts.

They said it: “We weren’t expecting that and we wouldn’t put that on anybody. That’s not what we do. We expect our defense to play better, but we’ll take those nine strikeouts,” Aversa said.

In the end, though, the three-run second for Morris was the difference as the Redskins topped DeKalb, 6-3, in Northern Illinois Big 12 action.

Mackenzie Riggs had three hits and scored a run for DeKalb (5-8, 1-3), while Mallory Warner had an RBI double.

DeKalb scored first in the second inning when Riggs singled in Erin Karasewski, who also had two hits.

Morris got three in the bottom of the

inning and never looked back. DeKalb scored single runs in the fourth and seventh.

“I thought we played a pretty good game,” DeKalb coach Jeff Davis said.

“We played solid defense, but we’ve been struggling a little bit offensively. Tonight was the first time we put Mackenzie Riggs in the leadoff spot, and she gave us a bit of a spark there.

Maybe that’s what we need to turn this around.”

Torrie Newport suffered the loss on the mound before getting relief help from Warner. Newport allowed five earned runs in five innings, while Warner allowed one run in her one inning of relief.

Cogs fall to Rock Falls: Genoa-Kingston lost, 6-4, on the road.

Lexi Howie was 2 for 2 and scored three times. Ashley Petersen added two hits, including a double, for the Cogs (7-5, 3-3).

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD Barbs strong at Minooka: The DeKalb

girls track team continued to break school records in its outing at the Minooka Invitational.

The Barbs’ 400-meter relay and 800 relay each set school and meet records with their performances.

In the 400 relay, the team of juniors Bri Buggs and Mireia Martinez and freshmen Kyra Ozier and Sydney Dumas finished with a school-best time

of 49.01 seconds. In the 800 relay, the team of Buggs, Martinez, Dumas and junior Sierra Long finished in 1:44.31.

Individually, Buggs took first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.4, missing the school record by 0.2.

Freshman hurdler Bri Barwick took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.15.

The Barbs took fourth as a team.

DeKALB – Early in the 2018 football season, Northern Illinois will get a chance at a major upset when the Huskies play at Florida State.

More importantly, NIU is going to get a major payday.

The two teams will play each other Sept. 22 in Tallahassee in the third game of the 2018 season, and NIU will earn a guarantee of $1.6 million for the game.

“This is about being as lean a department that we could possibly be and we’re as lean as we could possibly get right now, so this money helps us keep the wolves at the door and save people’s jobs and do things, quite frankly, to help our university and to help our department,” NIU athletic director Sean Frazier said.

Frazier said the school is feeling the hit of the Illinois state budget impasse, which started in July 2015.

The payday also will help with athletic operations and the department’s bottom line, Frazier said.

“It’s tough. I don’t want to beat up on the politicians because I’ve never been one, but ... I wanted to explain that it’s altered a lot of things that we wanted to do because of the financial stress that’s been put on our operation,” Frazier said of the lack of a state budget. “The truth is, most likely, we would not have had this game or made this change if it wasn’t because of the state impasse.”

Frazier said the $1.6 guarantee from Florida State is the largest in NIU history. The Huskies got a $900,000 guarantee from Ohio State for the game in 2015, in which the Huskies almost stunned the top-ranked Buckeyes before falling, 20-13.

Buffalo recently made headlines for cutting four of its athletic programs, including men’s soccer and baseball. NIU has 17 athletic programs and would need to keep at least 16 to keep Football Bowl Subdivision status. Frazier said there hasn’t been a discussion about

dropping programs and playing at the Football Championship Subdivision level.

“We haven’t had those talks,” Frazier said. “No, no, no, that’s never been a discussion with me, nor would I advocate for that at all.”

The game against Florida State replaces a game NIU had against Idaho that was scheduled for Sept. 22 at Huskie Stadium. The Huskies’ nonconference slate is difficult in 2018, with games at Florida State, Iowa (Sept. 1) and BYU (Oct. 27) and a home game against Utah (Sept. 8).

The Seminoles, who won the national championship in 2014, finished last year with a 10-3 record and were ranked No. 8 in the final poll. All four of the Huskies’ 2018 opponents made bowl games last season, with Iowa finishing 8-5 and BYU and Utah each going 9-4. Utah was ranked No. 23 in the final poll.

“I’m a football guy, and if you look at it competitively, we already had a competitive schedule,” Frazier said. “I put together a very good schedule for us and to add (Florida State) in, all due respect to Florida State, the main motivation was to deal with our financial strife. ... It’s not like we needed another Power 5 team on our schedule. We have a pretty aggressive and ambitious schedule without them. This makes it even more competitive.”

According to the university, NIU has received one of the three installments of payment from Florida State.

Frazier said he reached out to Florida State initially with talks about a game, which filled a hole in the Seminoles’ schedule.

The game will be a rematch of the 2013 Orange Bowl.

The Huskies, who were led at quarterback by current running backs coach Jordan Lynch, trailed 17-10 early in the third quarter before the Seminoles scored 14 unanswered points for a 31-10 victory.

Almora’s catches ensure win

bmiles@dailyherald.com CHICAGO – Albert Almora Jr. was a run-saver Thursday for the Cubs in their 4-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field.

Almora twice robbed the Dodgers’ Corey Seager, leaping at the center-field wall in the first inning to make a catch and then running back toward the wall and catching Seager’s drive to end the third and leave a runner stranded at second base.

“The thing that I talk to our guys (about), and I think I’ve said it before, it’s the only game where the defense has the baseball, so we need to dictate the action,” manager Joe Maddon said. “You need to make the routine plays, absolutely, but whenever you can make the little bit better than routine, when you can catch line drives because of positioning or just athleticism, it totally deflates the other side.

“That’s almost like hitting a home run or getting a bases-loaded double regarding the energy that’s created in your dugout. We feed off our defense.

We absolutely do. When we make a good play, the whole bench goes nuts.

Almora’s defense always has been a part of his game, even back to when the Cubs took him in the first round of the 2012 draft.

“I think of it like this: If we made a T-shirt for (defense), it’s pretty big,” Almora said.

One of the shirts made up by Maddon says “D-peat,” meaning that if the Cubs are going to repeat as world

champions, the defense will get it done.

“We make T-shirts, and we say things that are really valuable to our team, and I think defense is one of them,” Almora said. “And we take pride in that.”

The defense made a winner of starting pitcher Brett Anderson, who labored through five innings to get his first win as a Cub against no losses.

“I think I owe Almora my paycheck for the day,” said Anderson, who called

his outing a “grind” because he didn’t have his best stuff. “He made two web gems. … Today was one of those days where it was a grind from Pitch 1, but I was pleased with the way I battled.”

On a day when the wind was blowing in off Lake Michigan, the Cubs got a couple of big blasts. Anthony Rizzo hit his first home run of the season in the first inning, a drive to right-center. Addison Russell also hit his first, a booming drive to left onto Waveland Avenue in the fourth. The Cubs added two more runs in the fifth, and relievers Carl Edwards Jr. (two innings), Koji Uehara and Wade Davis finished.

But the defense never rested – second baseman Javy Baez turned a lineout double play in the seventh – nor did Maddon rest in talking about it.

“We played the heck out of defense,” said Maddon, whose team is 6-3, having won two of three in each of its first three series of the season. “Albert was fantastic. The outfielders really had a big part in the game. (Left fielder Kyle) Schwarber almost had a circus catch, also, but give the defense credit.

“There was a lot of little nuance in that game today, but without that defense, it doesn’t look anything like that.”

Cabrera keys big first inning as Sox cruise

CLEVELAND – Melky Cabrera will be missed when he’s gone for the weekend to be with his wife as she gives birth to their daughter Friday.

“Melky, for me, is one of the premier hitters in baseball,’’ manager Rick Renteria said.

“Premier” is high praise, to be sure, but there is no doubt Cabrera is arguably the best all-around hitter on the Sox, and he showed Thursday how to step up to the plate when dedicating a game to a special cause. Cabrera singled and scored in a five-run first inning against Josh Tomlin that paced the Sox to a 10-4 victory, and also walked and scored in a two-run second and doubled in the fourth.

The victory, coming a night after left-hander Derek Holland dedicated six scoreless innings to his late grandmother, gave the Sox two out of three from the defending American League

champions at a park where they are 1425 since 2013. They’ll take a 4-4 record into their weekend road series against the Twins, without Cabrera.

Beforehand, Cabrera said he was “nervous” because he planned to witness the birth. He and his wife have three children, ages 7, 6 and 4.

“This is going to be the first time I’m going to be there watching the whole process,’’ Cabrera said. “I’m going to be anxious and nervous at the same time.’’

The Sox entered the game ranked 13th in the American League with 25 runs scored in seven games and ranked in the bottom third in batting average, OPS, slugging and homers. The timing for Cabrera going away, with Todd Frazier battling illness and Geovany Soto (three of the team’s six homers) going on the disabled list, could have been better.

“To have him be with his family, everybody understands that and we want him to go down there,’’ Renteria said.

“I will be happier if we win today because I want to dedicate this game to my new daughter,’’ Cabrera said. “I want to win today.’’

That wish was granted, thanks to an early barrage of unprecedented offense beginning on the first pitch when Tim Anderson homered over the tall left field wall. After Avisail Garcia extended the inning and his hitting streak with a two-out single, Matt Davidson, filling in for Frazier at third base, hit a three-run homer to right field to make it 4-0.

Garcia (3 for 4) drove in two more runs in the second with a two-out single, walked in the fourth and drove in another run with a single in the eighth.

He has hit safely in all eight games and is batting .452 with eight RBIs. “I want to be consistent all year long,’’ Garcia said.

A second victory in as many outings looked like easy pickings for righthander Miguel Gonzalez, who entered with a 2.74 ERA over his past 12 starts

Swarzak, who pitched a scoreless inning the night before, took over and pitched 12/3 scoreless innings before handing off to Dan Jennings and Tommy Kahnle to finish off the Indians (4-5).

To save pitching, Indians manager Terry Francona used infielder Michael Martinez to pitch the ninth inning. His team is 4-5.

“To win two of three here is huge,’’ Gonzalez said. “We’re playing good baseball right now. Let’s keep it going.’’

Hawks sluggish in opener

mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – By the time the anthem was over and the 22,075 fans were done screaming themselves red in the face and the puck was dropped, it had been about three weeks since the Blackhawks had played a truly meaningful game. Heck, it had been almost a year if you regard the regular season as an extended training camp for the games that really count – “the fun hockey,” as Brent Seabrook put it.

And for all the perennial talk about how good the tried and tested Hawks are at flipping the switch come the playoffs, they sure spent the first 20 minutes looking like a team that still was struggling to find it in the dark.

It took them exactly one period to find it. And it still was one period too late.

The Hawks lost Game 1 of their firstround series against the Nashville Predators 1-0 on Thursday night, as Pekka Rinne (29 saves) outdueled Corey Crawford (19 saves). It was their second straight 1-0 loss to open the playoffs, coming on the heels of last April’s overtime loss in St. Louis. It’s also their first Game 1 not to go to overtime since 2011. It’s the first 1-0 playoff victory in Predators history, and their first road shutout.

The two rivals didn’t take long to get

After a decent first few minutes, the Hawks went nearly 14 minutes without a shot on goal, Duncan Keith’s harmless fling from center ice with five seconds left finally resetting the clock. In fact, all six of the Hawks’ shots in the first period were from the perimeter, as Nashville kept the Hawks to the outside and kept their sticks and skates in every shooting lane.

It was exactly the opposite of what Seabrook said the Hawks needed.

“Whatever happens over the course of the game, we want to come out and have a good start and play our game, and then get off to a good start in the series,” he said. “Play our game. I know I sound like a broken record to you guys, but we want to focus on just playing our game.”

They said it: “Amanda Swedberg made a great catch on Morgan Weber’s ball,” Carpenter said. “She smoked that thing. That is 50 feet out of here if the wind’s not pushing it. Amanda had a great beat on it. We made some really good plays that really saved us, but you can only dodge so much.”

Dan Rooney dies at 84 The Associated Press

Dan Rooney, the powerful and popular Pittsburgh Steelers chairman whose name is attached to the NFL’s landmark initiative in minority hiring, died Thursday. He was 84.

The team announced his death but details were not immediately available.

Rooney took over operation of the team in the 1960s from his father, Art, who founded the franchise. From there, Dan Rooney oversaw NFL championships for a team that had never even played in a league title game. Over the decades he became one of the most powerful and innovative forces within the game, developing the Rooney Rule under which NFL teams are required to interview minority candidates for coaching and front-office positions. He was a key figure in labor negotiations and league expansion.

In 2000, Rooney was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, joining his father. Dan Rooney’s son, Art II, has been the Steelers president since 2003, with Dan Rooney becoming chairman.

Dwyane Wade is home again.

And not just in his return to Chicago this season.

No, Wade and postseason play have become synonymous, and with the Bulls clinching the No. 8 spot in the Eastern Conference on Wednesday, it’s now 12 playoff appearances in the past 14 years for the 35-yearold.

That’s 166 playoff games, three world championships and a 22.8 playoff scoring average per game.

No wonder the Bulls shelled out $23.2 million for Wade’s services this year, and the old guy is about to start really earning that money.

Besides what he brings to floor, it’s also the experience he brings in preparing for playoff basketball. The Bulls have five players in the rotation with two years or less of experience, which hasn’t slipped by Wade.

“They’re going to have to experience it for sure,’’ Wade said of what awaits his younger teammates. “The

main thing that myself and [veteran Rajon] Rondo and guys who have been in the playoffs can bring to them is letting them understand the importance of each possession and the importance of moving onto the next possession.

“There are certain things you talk to them about. Outside of that, when they go through the process, we just have to help them through it.

It is a lot of these guys’ first time, but they’re basketball players as well.

Some of these guys live for competition. We’ve showed that throughout the year when we’ve played the best teams. Some of these guys live for these moments. It’s definitely going to be a different level, but I’m excited for these guys.’’

What about being excited for himself?

Wade’s return to the playoffs seemed to be in doubt several times this year, including after a March 12 loss in Boston in which the Bulls fell to 31-35 in the standings. Then a few games later, Wade dislocated his right elbow and was expected to miss

Advance directives important to patients, doctors and families Dear Doctor: I am a 60-year-old man who exercises regularly and takes no medicines.

At my last physical exam, my doctor gave me an advance directive form. Do I really need to fill one out?

Dear Reader: Unequivocally, yes. Advance directives are forms providing direction to both family members and the medical community about your wishes in emergencies. More to the point, they specify what your wishes are, in case you can’t speak for yourself.

The first part of an advance directive asks whom you would want to make medical decisions for you. Termed a medical power of attorney, this can be your wife, one of your children or a very good friend. It cannot be your doctor. The crucial aspect of this choice is the level of trust you have in your decision maker. If you were to lose decision-making capacity, this person would speak with doctors about your care on your behalf – becoming both your advocate and the person who chooses resuscitative measures, if any. Not only should you trust the person to whom you give medical power of attorney, you also need to have frank conversations with that person about what you would want.

It sounds as if you’re healthy, and thus have a low likelihood of a major illness. But health problems can happen at any time.

If you were hospitalized for a heart attack, stroke or a traumatic brain injury, what choices would you want to make? If you were unable to breathe, would you want a tube, attached to a ventilator, placed into your lungs? The answer may be yes – but not indefinitely. If that’s the case, then for how long? Would you consider a tracheostomy, if you were on a ventilator for more than two weeks? Again, the answer may be

These are not easy topics to consider, or to discuss with the ones you love. But they are important. Ideally, doctors could help with the discussion about end of life, but because the nature of doctors is to treat and heal, many have difficulty discussing end-of-life decisions with their patients. Studies have shown even with patients who face a life-limiting disease, physicians discuss advance directives only 40 to 45 percent of the time.

One study posed a hypothetical situation in which a man with stage 4 gastric cancer, metastasized to his lung, comes to the emergency room with his wife for severe shortness of breath. The husband and wife in this scenario did not have an advance directive, but their preference was for the husband to remain comfortable and out of the intensive care unit. Only 48 percent of the 27 physicians who treated this hypothetical patient were able to coax out the appropriate information in order to treat him in accordance with his goals and preferences.

Now, I know you don’t have gastric cancer, but death is an inevitability. Providing your loved ones, the medical system and yourself direction about your course of care gives you some control over that inevitability.

Dear Abby: “Full of Feeling in Arizona” (Jan. 21) wrote about her husband lacking sympathy, and was worried he may not be there emotionally for her children in the event of her dying before he does. Your answer to her was to “outlive him,” which had me rolling in laughter.

Perhaps another idea might be to write letters to her children now. A heartfelt letter taking family members through the loss of their mom (from their mom) or dad (from their mom who has already passed) may be very comforting to some. Or several letters for different occasions could be a beautiful gift.

Just after the robots at bridgebase.com had bid and made six hearts against my wife and me (see yesterday’s column), up came another one.

We had some scientific bidding.

Over West’s Unusual No-trump showing at least 5-5 in the minors, my wife’s three-club response was game-forcing with five-plus hearts.

(Instead, three hearts would have been natural and encouraging, but nonforcing.) After I agreed hearts, the next three calls were control-bids, North knowing that the king in partner’s first-bid suit is usually as good as the ace. Four no-trump was Roman Key Card Blackwood. Five clubs indicated three key cards (here, two aces and the heart king). Now I could envision a grand slam, so I asked for the heart queen. But when my partner denied that card, I settled for six hearts.

West led a top club. (It is common to lead the king from ace-king or king-queen when the contract is above four no-trump.) I ruffed and led a low heart. West’s club discard was not unexpected. I put in dummy’s heart jack, and surprisingly East played the nine. I ruffed a club, crossed to the spade 10, ruffed the third club, led a diamond to the ace, cashed the two top hearts and played on spades to make the slam.

There were 15 other tables in play. Four spades plus two was the result 11 times, almost every auction being one spade - two no-trump four spades - all pass. That was very bad evaluation of the North hand.

Even worse, four tables were in a partscore. Don’t ask!
