First reaction to problem on United plane not best My first reaction to seeing the passenger pulled off the United Airlines flight at O’Hare Airport was probably the wrong one.

I saw police dragging the man off the flight and thought, “Why’s he making them drag him off the plane? That doesn’t seem necessary.”

Admittedly, I would be pretty angry if I had driven to the airport, checked in, gone through security and actually boarded a plane, only then to be informed that I’d have to get off because I’d been bumped from the flight.

As it turned out, one man on a flight from Chicago to Louisville, Kentucky, refused to do that Sunday – which is why United ordered that Dr. David Dao, 69, be forcibly removed from the plane, much to the dismay of passengers.

As someone who flies occasionally, my main concern is that the system works. I want to get where I am going as efficiently as possible; in my mind, the steps that cause the least amount of inconvenience for people are best. It’s not as though Dao was going to get nothing for his trouble – the airline was offering him compensation worth $800 and a hotel room to spend the night in Chicago.

Better to inconvenience a few people rather than hundreds of others who can’t fly without a flight crew, I thought.

When you buy an airline ticket, you agree to take a chance on flight delays or cancellations, missed connections and lost baggage. It’s part of the deal – sometimes the unexpected occurs, and you have to roll with it.

Had it been me, I know I would have walked off the plane rather than make them drag me.

So in response to a friend’s post on social media, I shared my opinion. I knew that it might not be well-received, but this is how people like me learn things.

Some people made some excellent points in response, which changed my mind some.

Such as: • The airline never should have forced

EDITOR’S NOTE Eric Olson someone off the plane in such a ham-handed way. This guy bought a ticket and was sitting in his seat – why should he have to give it up if he doesn’t want to?

• The overbooking was the airline’s mistake and they should have kept on offering more money until four passengers agreed to get off. Or, they could have found another way to get their flight crew to Louisville.

Put them on someone else’s airline if they have to.

• We’re not animals or numbers, we’re people – and customers. Airlines shouldn’t treat us like chattel no matter what they write into the contracts.

I agree with all that. Some of what I originally thought about this, I still believe: Better decisions by management would have prevented this situation from happening.

The flying public’s concern with finding the lowest possible fare is what got us here.

The emphasis on low cost is so great that airlines are continually figuring ways to pack more and more people onto airplanes in more cramped conditions in order to offer no-frills pricing.

If we don’t like these overbooking practices by the airlines, we should change the law that allows them to do it, or prohibit them from forcing people off planes without a voluntary settlement.

Of course, that could mean fares would cost more – and that’s not what people want.

Personally, I’ll keep flying United. I’ll bet that after this, should I ever get bumped from one of their flights, they’ll be a lot nicer than they were to Dao.

Judge grants man’s request for certificate of innocence in Ridulph case

SYCAMORE – Pat Quinn didn’t flinch as Jack McCullough was granted a certificate of innocence Wednesday in the Dec. 3, 1957, slaying of her sister, 7-year-old Maria Ridulph.

McCullough, 77, of Seattle wasn’t present. Quinn was motionless as Judge William Brady explained the reasoning for the ruling he was about to make, which would effectively reopen the case of Maria’s murder. Quinn’s husband, Bill, occasionally looked down and closed his eyes, cheeks flushed.

“The ultimate question that must be answered: Is it more likely that the defendant would be found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, or is it more likely he would be found not guilty, and not responsible for Maria Ridulph’s disappearance and murder?” Brady said.

“Based on the changes in the law, and the consideration of the additional evidence now available to this court, the latter of these questions is true.”

Against her husband’s advice, Quinn stopped momentarily outside the courtroom.

“Do I feel Jack McCullough killed my sister?” Quinn said.

“Yes, I do. I have nothing more to say.

“I’m sorry. This is just disappointment.”

State’s Attorney Rick Amato lamented the loss of what he said might have been the Ridulph family’s last chance at justice.

“Jack McCullough, his loved ones and his lawyers have talked a lot of about justice in the last year or so,” Amato said in a written statement.

“Maria Ridulph, her brother, Chuck, and her sister, Pat, don’t have justice. Last Thursday might well have been our last chance at justice for Maria. I did my best to speak for her – to ask questions we all want to ask – to get answers we all crave. I wanted to be sure

Aisha Davis, an attorney from the Chicago-based Exoneration Project, was McCullough’s lone representative in court Wednesday. She said McCullough is undecided whether he will file a lawsuit or seek compensation.

“It’s very powerful that the court that initially convicted Mr. McCullough is the one that’s now saying he’s innocent,” Davis said outside the courthouse. “We’re all very glad that he doesn’t have to worry about this being over his head, and he can finally move on.”

McCullough’s attorney, Russell Ainsworth, of the Chicago-based civil rights law firm Loevy & Loevy, said he’d go over McCullough’s options with him Wednesday night. He could only speculate on what damages a successful wrongful conviction suit could bring.

“It would be worth justice, and whatever a jury believes that’s worth – justice for a man ripped from his home and

branded a murderer nationwide,” he said.

McCullough is entitled to $80,000 – $20,000 for each year he spent in state prison after his Sept. 14, 2012, conviction – through the court of claims.

The state, however, is behind on paying those claims, because of the nearly 2-year-old budget impasse.

“They’re not being paid,” Ainsworth said. He, too, is part of the Exoneration Project, a free legal clinic at the University of Chicago that represents the wrongfully convicted.

“There are a number of wrongfully convicted people who are not being paid because of the budget impasse.”

McCullough’s conviction was upheld by an Illinois appellate court in 2015. Former DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack used FBI reports from the 1950s compiled after Ridulph’s disappearance in Sycamore and evidence that McCullough used a pay phone in Rockford about the time Ridulph last was seen

to have the charges dismissed on April 15, 2016.

“To be clear, once my predecessor agreed to the certificate of innocence, the options of this office were limited,” Amato said. “I consulted a number of legal experts. All universally said that I could not choose my own path, exercise my own discretion, or make any move that is inconsistent with that of my predecessor.”

Jeff Doty, author of “Piggyback,” a book about Ridulph’s kidnapping and McCullough’s conviction, said he spoke with McCullough on Tuesday night, and that the “whirlwind of emotions” surrounding McCullough’s April 6 hearing led him to return to Seattle shortly after.

“He wants to come back, but he wants to come back under different circumstances, to visit the town he grew up in,” Doty said. “He’s hoping this will fade away, though we know it won’t.”

At the hearing April 6, Amato conceded that four of

the five requirements by state statute for the certificate were met. He objected, however, to the fifth: The petitioner must prove he or she did not, by his or her own conduct, voluntarily cause or bring about the conviction.

Ainsworth called three witnesses during the hearing to reinforce McCullough’s innocence, including McCullough and Nancy Steblay, professor of psychology at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.

Steblay said Kathy Sigman, a friend of Ridulph’s who had been playing with her up to her disappearance, picked McCullough out of a lineup of six mugshots in 2010. Every mugshot, however, except McCullough’s, was from a high school yearbook that had a different background.

Steblay’s testimony was buoyed by precedent set in the January 2016 People v. Lerma case, in which expert testimony on reliability of eyewitness’ testimony was allowed.

“Expert testimony concerning the reliability of eyewitness testimony has moved from the novel and uncertain to the settled and widely accepted,” Brady said Wednesday.

He also said that McCullough’s statements to Seattle police were not a basis of his conviction and, thus, he hadn’t caused it himself.

“It was relief,” Doty said.

“It’s time that it’s over. This concludes the criminal part of it, and I guess it goes to civil from here on out. I don’t know for sure what he’s going to do.

“His whole concern, his whole focus, is for people to know this could happen to you.”

Davis said that once McCullough and his lawyers determine the next step, they’ll make a public statement.

“I think he’s just exploring his options, and we’ll be talking to him about whatever he wants to do next,” she said.

“I’m sure you all will hear as soon as he makes a decision.”

Food, wine offered at Taste of Spring

SYCAMORE – The Taste of Spring was not only a chance for community members to explore downtown Sycamore and drink wine, it also gave local business owners such as Todd Hendrey a chance to showcase their products.

Hendrey, owner of The Confectionary at 235 W. State St., offered the candy store’s chocolate-covered blackberries and blueberries paired with red wine from Hy-Vee of Sycamore during the seventh annual event Thursday.

“We hope that, one, people have fun tonight, and two, that they see we’re here and that we can help them out with their candy needs,” he said.

The Confectionary has been in Sycamore since 1994, and the Taste of Spring is a great way to bring in extra traffic, Hendrey said.

Hosted by the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce, the event kicked off with a champagne toast in Blumen Gardens,

“It’s a great event. It gets people into the businesses and shopping and being out for spring.”

Sycamore Chamber of Commerce executive director 403 Edward St., where participants were given souvenir wine glasses and lanyards listing the 19 locations offering food and wine pairings.

Chamber Executive Director Rose Treml said 300 people bought tickets for the event, which has sold out for four years in a row.

She said most of the wine was purchased from Hy-Vee, while a few businesses such as Taxco, PJ’s Courthouse Tavern and Prairie State Winery offered their own drinks, and various local caterers provided the food.

“It’s a great event,” Treml said. “It gets people into the businesses and shopping and being out for spring.”

Diann Beaulieu of Catering by Diann, offered through Tom & Jerry’s Restaurant, served snacks from a charcuterie table at Blumen Gardens.

“Basically, it’s an assortment of meats, cheeses, figs, dates, black olives, green olives and crackers that pair perfectly with all kinds of wine,” she said.

Beaulieu said her business has been in Sycamore for 19 years, and this was her fourth year participating in Taste of Spring.

“First of all, it’s just wonderful to support the Sycamore Chamber, which does so many good things for businesses, and it’s just a great event,” she said.

“It’s kicking off spring; everybody is in a great mood. We enjoy it.”

Steve Gromala, an employee at Prairie State Winery, 322 W. State St., said the winery used Taste of Spring as an opportunity to feature

some of its new wines, such as Prairie Mist and Prairie Fire, along with its best-selling wines.

“We get to meet customers that usually don’t come in,” Gromala said.

“Hopefully, they get exposed to some nice Illinois wines. People think of Europe, California; they don’t think of Illinois. So, this is a nice exposure for people.”

Brian Wright of Brian Wright & Associates, 584 W. State St., handed out deconstructed cannolis from Latsis Bakery in Genoa paired with Hy-Vee wine.

“We talk about the wine; we talk about the community,” he said. “Most people don’t think about going to socialize in a law office.”

Wright said this was his office’s third year participating.

“We’ve been here in Sycamore for five years, so it’s another way we can help give back by hosting,” he said “It’s always well-attended, and we look forward to it each year.”

Born: November 11, 1969; in Bensenville, IL Died: March 24, 2017; in Chicago, IL Ann Marie Beckman, age 47, of Hinckley, IL, passed away on Friday, March 24, 2017 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL. She was born on November 11, 1969 in Bensenville, IL. Ann was united in marriage on September 9, 2016 to Michael Manly. She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Hinckley, IL. She was formerly employed as a waitress in several area restaurants. Ann was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister who will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her parents, Fred and Edythe Beckman of Hinckley, IL; her brother, Paul Beckman of Sycamore, IL; her husband, Michael Manly of Hinckley, IL; her three children, Chrystal Shoote of Gilbert, IL, Jacob Schoato of Sycamore, IL, and William Savage of Hinckley, IL; three stepchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

Carol J. Hamilton Scott, 82, Rockford, passed away Monday, April 10, 2017, at SwedishAmerican Hospital due to complications after surgery.

She was born September 13, 1934, in Eldora, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Altha (Warburg) Peterson. Carol lived in Rockford since 1952, coming from Waterman. She married Marshall Hamilton

in Rockford on October 7, 1956. He passed away in Rockford on March 26, 2010.

She married Richard B. Scott in Rockford on November 8, 2003. He passed away on January 11, 2016. Carol worked as an Orthopedic Nurse at SwedishAmerican Hospital for 28 years, retiring in January, 2004. She was a member of Court Street United Methodist Church. Carol enjoyed traveling, playing cards, cross stitching, and going antiquing with her friends. She liked watching sports on television, especially college basketball, and was an avid Cubs fan. Carol loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren.

NIU alumni to present an app on ‘Shark Tank’

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Two Northern Illinois University alumni will be featured on Friday’s episode of ABC’s “Shark Tank” to present their personal security startup company, Guard Llama.

Joe Parisi, a 2011 accounting graduate, and Adam Havey, a 2012 graduate in communication studies, launched their startup in 2015. It markets an app and keychain remote designed to alert authorities in case of an emergency.

The startup has raised about $550,000 from investors.

According to Guard Llama’s website, pressing the remote twice sends a Bluetooth signal to the Guard Llama app, which alerts the company’s emergency dispatch center. Guard Llama will then send the user’s GPS

Country club project recommended to council

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Rezoning that would allow for a $2 million construction project at Kishwaukee Country Club was recommended to the DeKalb City Council on Wednesday during the city’s Planning and Zoning Committee meeting.

The project would include a new clubhouse, pro shop and other associated improvements on the property at 1901 Sycamore Road.

Kishwaukee Country Club President Steve Irving said he has worked on developing the project for close to 10 years, and it would not require any

financial incentives from the city.

“The Kishwaukee Country Club has been in its present location for over 100 years,” Irving said. “Because the building is just as old as the purchase of the property, board members have tried to come up with a reasonable financial solution to make the building good for another 100 years.”

Irving added that there are a multitude of problems with the existing clubhouse, such as a leaky roof, basement flooding, little access for those with disabilities and limited fire escape access for the offices on the second floor.

The new building will be a one-story

structure with a full basement.

However, DeKalb Principal Planner Dan Olson said the existing clubhouse on the property will remain operational until the new one is built.

The rezoning request was approved without opposition by a 5-0 vote. Commissioners Vicki Buckley and David Castro were absent.

Irving said he has been soliciting estimates from contractors, but the bidding process may not begin until the final architectural drawings are completed, which may take a couple of months.

He added that the construction phase of the project may not start until

the end of the summer, but he hopes to begin some of the utility work in June and July.

“Site work such as additional parking that may be needed, running the sewer line, running the sanitary line and readjusting the water main could be done in June or July,” Irving said. “I would prefer, because we’re so busy between now and Labor Day, to wait and start the main construction after Labor Day. The construction phase should be done in about six months.”

The City Council is expected to make a ruling on the project during its April 24 meeting at the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St.

A: You have a very American chair. Chairs made of buffalo, elk or Texas longhorn steer horns were made from horns left behind at the slaughter houses or discarded by hunters. The horns had a graceful curved shape and when positioned carefully, they created a chair frame with a curved back, legs and arms. An upholstered seat was added and, in some cases, some trim from other pieces of horn. Matching footstools also were made.

The chairs were not made for comfort, but were popular with hunters and those who wanted memories of the old West. There are pictures that show President Teddy Roosevelt and President Lincoln both had horn chairs that were gifts. Your chair could bring $1,000 or more at auction. *** Q: I have dishes with bowls that look like heads of lettuce and plates that are a single lettuce leaf. They are marked with the signature “Dodie Thayer.” Can you tell me anything about them?

A: Large leaves probably were one of the first “plates” used at a feast. So it was not surprising that plates were shaped like cabbage or lettuce leaves by the 1600s. Leafshaped European majolica, plates were made

by Delft, and by the 18th-century, they also were crafted by English potteries Wedgwood, Longton Hall, Chelsea and Minton, and French potteries Jacob Petit and Palissy. There was Etruscan Majolica from Pennsylvania, and modern giftware items like California Dodie Thayer ceramics. This Palm Beach dishware was made during the 1960s and ‘70s. Dishes were made from molds of actual cabbage or lettuce leaves or full heads of the vegetable. Pink, red, yellow and green sets were made. They are signed with the artist’s name. Recently, the Lettuce Ware dishes were reproduced for the Tory Burch shops in green or white.

Full sets are made with cups, plates, tureens and more. A new salad plate costs $40. When did the Easter bunny become part of the tradition of the religious Easter holiday? Easter began to be observed hundreds of years ago to commemorate the rising of Christ from the dead, and it has gradually become associated with the themes of the renewal of life in nature and flowers. It was not until about the 18th century that the Easter egg became part of the celebration. The egg has long been a symbol of eternal life, and decorating and hunting for eggs became part of the symbolism of the holiday. As years passed, cardboard and papier-mache eggs were used, then real eggshells with the liquid egg blown out through a small hole. Other countries used sugar eggs, wooden eggs and eventually plastic. All eggs were decorated.

Soon there were Easter egg hunts and Easter egg rolls, but still no Easter bunny. During the early 18th century, the Pennsylvania Germans suggested that, in spring, the Easter Bunny would hide eggs or perhaps put them in an upside-down hat that was left out overnight. That custom soon grew to using not just a hat, but a basket to be filled with eggs, candy and fake green grass. By the 20th century, there were stuffed-toy Easter bunnies, porcelain figurines of bunnies and a German business making papier-mache and cardboard Easter bunny candy containers, which were sold in the U.S. and filled with candy. By the 1920s, there were tin or glass candy containers shaped like bunnies and other Easter symbols and, of course, toys. Holiday collecting is becoming more popular. Easter items include religious pictures and memorabilia, baskets, bunnies, chicks, ducks, nut cups, place cards, postcards and store advertising featuring Easter themes. Prices have gone down and up since 1980. *** Q: I’d like to know something about F. Winkles & Co. pottery. Is it old?

A: F. Winkle & Co. made earthenware at the Colonial Pottery in Stoke, Staffordshire, England, from 1890 to 1931. Ridgways took over F. Winkle & Co. in 1931. The Colonial Pottery became Whieldon Sanitary Potteries Ltd., later a subsidiary of Doulton Co. The factory was torn down in about 2000. Pottery by F. Winkle & Co. is selling for low prices. Dinner plates sell for $10-$25, bread and butter plates for $9, a fruit dish for $15. Serving dishes sell for higher prices.

Farm takes nearly $500K loss in hog building blaze DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com HINCKLEY – An early morning fire killed nearly half the livestock in a hog finishing building at Ness Farms on Hinckley Road, and took out the building as well, Hinckley fire officials said.

The Hinckley Fire Department responded at 3:05 a.m. to 12340 Hinckley Road, where the building was engulfed in flames, according to a news release.

The department got the fire under control by about 6 a.m., but the building was a total loss.

Fortuitously, when the roof collapsed, it fell on the many pens and systems, sparing the lives of more than half of the 1,400 hogs inside.

“It’s kind of like instead of getting kicked within a half-inch of your life, you get kicked within 2 inches,” Fire Chief Jay VanLanduyt said. “It could have been worse, but it’s still a huge loss.”

The total loss is estimated at $460,000, and it’s all fully insured, VanLanduyt said. The building, where young hogs

The Associated Press CHICAGO – United Airlines sought to quell the uproar over a man being dragged off a plane by announcing Tuesday that it would no longer ask police to remove passengers from full flights and would compensate customers who were on the flight when the man was removed.

In an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America” aired Wednesday, United parent company CEO Oscar Munoz said he felt “ashamed” watching video of the man being forced off the jet. He has promised to review the airline’s passenger-removal policy.

Munoz, who leads United’s parent company, apologized again to Kentucky physician David Dao, his family and the other passengers who witnessed him being taken off the flight.

“That is not who our family at United is,” he said. “This will never happen again on a United flight. That’s my promise.”

PORTAGE, Ind. – A spill at a U.S. Steel plant in northern Indiana that sent wastewater containing a potentially carcinogenic chemical into a Lake Michigan tributary was apparently caused by a pipe failure but testing has found none of that toxic substance in the lake, the company and federal officials said Wednesday.

Tuesday’s spill of an unknown amount of wastewater led to the closure of three beach areas at the scenic Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and prompted a local water utility to stop drawing water from the lake out of “an abundance of caution,”

Organization sues over immigrant detained in Ill.

CHICAGO – A Honduran immigrant who said he posted bail but remains jailed in northern Illinois jail on the request of immigration authorities has filed a federal complaint calling his detention unconstitutional.

The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund sued on behalf of Emil Santos of Fox Lake.

Santos was arrested April 1 on domestic violence charges. The lawsuit said his sister posted bail, but Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued a detainer,

After the video first emerged, he said the airline was reaching out to the man to “resolve this situation.”

Hours later on Monday, his tone turned defensive. He described the man as “disruptive and belligerent.”

Plans in works for $130M hospital project in Rockford

ROCKFORD – A $130 million hospital renovation and construction project in Rockford is in the works.

SwedishAmerican – a division of UW Health – announced plans for the project that will include a new four-story building and an upgrade of an intensive care unit so that it can provide the state-of-the-art care for newborns.

Dr. Bill Gorski is the president and CEO of SwedishAmerican. He told the (Rockford) Register Star the project could begin in September. He said it might create 600 union construction jobs and ultimately lead to the hiring of as many as 96 physicians.

Spicer says Hitler comment ‘inexcusable and reprehensible’

Trump: U.S.-Russia relations may be at an ‘all-time low’

WASHINGTON – With tensions rising over Syria and other issues, President Donald Trump said Wednesday that U.S. relations with Russia “may be at an all-time low” as he moved ever further away from his campaign promises to establish better ties with Moscow.

“Right now we’re not getting along with Russia at all,” Trump said flatly during a White House news conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Soltenberg.

It was a grim assessment that echoed the words of Trump’s top diplomat, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who left an almost twohour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow declaring the countries had reached a “low point” in relations.

Trump said Tillerson had completed a successful meeting with Putin, where “things went pretty well.” But he said it was an open question where relations go from here. He said “it would be a fantastic thing” if the two nations got along better but cautioned that “it may be just the opposite.”

Could Syria have launched the chemical weapons attack with Russia’s advance knowledge? Trump said it was “certainly possible” though “probably unlikely.”

The less-than-positive assessments of relations by both Trump and Tillerson reflected the former Cold War foes’ inability to forge greater cooperation, as Trump until recently has advocated.

More than 80 people were killed in what the U.S. has described as a nerve gas attack that Assad’s forces undoubtedly carried out. Russia says rebels were responsible for whatever

chemical agent was found, which the Trump administration calls a disinformation campaign.

The Moscow news conference came after Putin met Tillerson for the first time since Trump took office. The diplomats know each other well from Tillerson’s days as Exxon Mobil CEO. Putin had even honored Tillerson with a friendship award.

Beyond Syria, Russia’s alleged meddling in the U.S. presidential election also hovered over what was the first face-to-face encounter between Putin and any Trump administration Cabinet member.

Lavrov blasted U.S. claims that it has “irrefutable evidence” of election interference.

“We have not seen a single fact, or even a hint of facts,” he said. “I do not know who saw them. No one showed us anything, no one said anything, although we repeatedly asked to produce the details on which these unfounded accusations lie.”

He also rejected American claims of incontrovertible evidence that Assad ordered the chemical attack.

Still, Tillerson sought to stress the positives from his meetings. He said working groups would be established to improve U.S.-Russian ties and identify problems. He said the two sides would also discuss disagreements on Syria and how to end the country’s six-year civil war.

But such hopes appeared optimistic as the diplomats outlined their sharply diverging views on Syria. Until the chemical attack, the Trump administration had sought to step back from the U.S. position that Assad should leave power. But Tillerson repeated the administration’s new belief that “the reign of the Assad family is coming to an end.”

United against United Airlines It may be time to “re-accommodate” Oscar Munoz, chief executive of United Airlines. He might be “re-accommodated” in a different industry – mixed martial arts, for example, or corrections.

It was Munoz, formerly hailed as a modern-day corporate mastermind and communications clairvoyant for having spiffed up United’s once-pitiable record of customer service, who apologized for having to “re-accommodate” four passengers on a Chicago-to-Louisville flight Sunday. Never mind that one of the passengers was manhandled and bloodied by airport police, acting at the behest of United personnel, after he declined to be “re-accommodated” by giving up his reserved, paid-for seat. That passenger finally received a full apology Tuesday from Munoz, 48 hours after he was dragged off the plane with his glasses askew.

Video of that incident, shot by other passengers, instantly went viral, prompting Munoz’s clueless statement, in which he also promised to reach out to the passenger. Even as he was tut-tutting at what he called the “upsetting event” on Flight 3411, Munoz, who has made a great show during his tenure of redefining his airline as a “people business,” was sending an altogether different message internally. Openly blaming the victim, he assured United personnel in a letter, quickly leaked, that “I emphatically stand behind all of you” and that it was the “disruptive and belligerent” passenger who had invited the assault upon him by refusing to yield his seat to one of the airline’s own employees, who needed to get to Louisville.

The victim was Asian-American, fueling the video’s virality in China, where it has been seized upon by untold millions, at the urging of state media and others, as evidence of anti-Asian bias in the United States and Washington’s hypocrisy on human rights.

It is a fact of life, and of Supreme Court precedent, that airlines may bump passengers from overbooked flights. Usually, passengers go voluntarily, lured by cash or voucher incentives offered by the airline. In some cases, they do not. Scarcely 1 out of every 10,000 United passengers was involuntarily given the heaveho during a five-year stretch ending last year, according to the Transportation Department.

That may be legal, but there is no excuse for allowing a passenger to be mauled. The airport police officer who dragged the passenger from his seat, suspended for now, should face discipline. And one would have thought that further sweeteners might have coaxed one or two more customers from their seats. Munoz now is in damage-control mode following his initial response, vowing “to fix what’s broken” by reviewing the airline’s policies on summoning police, transferring crew and handling overbooked flights “so this never happens again.” Nice that he plans to avoid a repetition of an event that was utterly avoidable in the first place.

Internet privacy legislation worth the effort Internet privacy is among the latest hot-button debates, in part, because of a likely rollback of Obama-era privacy protections that were supposed to take place later this year.

That got the attention of some Illinois lawmakers who are looking to implement internet safeguards at the state level, including one that would allow people to find out what companies such as Google and Facebook have collected on them and which third parties they share it with.

We think that is a good idea.

Most people don’t understand how a lot of this works, but just about everyone recoils at the thought of their privacy being invaded. With the internet, it is happening more and more frequently.

Surveillance of one kind or another has become the business model of the internet.

Last fall, the Federal Communications Commission ruled that if internet service providers

want to collect and sell personal information, such as your browsing history, they needed to get your permission first – that is, ask you to “opt-in” to their data-sharing programs.

But the GOP-led Congress voted to revoke the opt-in provision and President Trump signed the resolution last week.

Supporters of protections like Illinois is considering – a House committee has endorsed the measure – say they are needed because of what is going on in D.C. The federal regulations would place restrictions on what companies such as Comcast and Verizon can do with information, including user search histories, but not websites.

Privacy advocates say the move sends a clear signal that it’s up to individual states to step into this “right to know” debate and try to correct it.

Not surprisingly, the tech industry is largely against the proposed requirements, saying they would burden companies

with an unnecessary layer of regulation and compliance costs, while stifling innovation.

Supporters of the Illinois bill disagree, contending that similar requirements in the European Union and in California, which enacted a similar measure in 2000, have not hurt business.

It’s no surprise that the American Civil Liberties Union’s Illinois chapter is backing the bill, telling The Associated Press that such legislation is needed to address the now “razor-thin” division between government and private entities that can sell data to federal agencies.

In the end, maybe this ship has sailed. Maybe there is no good way to protect our basic privacy because the internet has become such a pervasive part of our everyday lives. But efforts like the one in Illinois is worth it, if for no other reason than to initiate a dialogue over our threatened right to privacy.

The right way to run a railroad Infrastructure is rising to the top of President Donald Trump’s agenda.

He reportedly wants to put tax credits for infrastructure investment in a tax-reform bill Congress is expected to produce this summer. Many Democrats want direct federal spending, not tax credits, but agree on the goal of raising spending on roads, bridges and other public works.

In Florida, a different debate is unfolding, and it is a reminder that frequently government could make a useful contribution to infrastructure development by getting out of the way.

At issue is a new passenger express-train service called Brightline.

The company behind Brightline, All Aboard Florida, wants it to link Orlando and Miami in a trip that takes less than three hours. Taxpayers are not being asked to provide construction grants or operating subsidies for the new train service, which is being financed by tax-exempt bonds.

Investors are expecting passengers to recoup them, and they, rather than taxpayers, will bear the losses if their expectations are not met.

High-speed rail projects are notorious for being money sinks for taxpayers. Brightline would operate just a little too slowly to count,

But it’s the minimal public-sector involvement that sets it apart – and the concomitant freedom to concentrate on business considerations.

Contrast Florida’s project with California’s bullet-train vision. Highspeed rail skeptic Robert Poole notes that California’s plan “zigzags from San Francisco to Los Angeles so it can serve such politically required stops as Bakersfield, Gilroy, Sylmar and Visalia.” The Florida route would have just two intermediate stops. For that reason and others, Poole believes that Brightline might succeed.

Several Florida counties have tried to tie up this development in court, citing concerns such as noise and interference with boat traffic.

Robert Poole calls these concerns “genuine” but “exaggerated and imbalanced.” He notes that All Aboard Florida is, for example, taking steps to minimize the need to use horns.

He also makes the more fun-

damental point that the rail “was already present, with passenger as well as freight trains running every day, long before any of the current residents lived there (or were even born).”

“Railroads have every right to increase service on their rights of way – that’s what successful railroads do,” he wrote.

The county officials who don’t want the express service running through their jurisdictions take credit for delaying it, but they also want the Florida Legislature to pass a law hindering it. The bill they have in mind is called the “Rail Safety Act.” It’s a misleading title. The service already would fall under both federal and state safety regulations.

The bill’s terms have been written to apply only to this project, not to raise safety standards across the board.

The bill also would make All Aboard Florida pay for maintenance of the road crossings over the track.

Those crossings are currently the responsibility of the counties, based on long-standing agreements in which they got the rail company to allow them to be built on its land. In recent years, the counties have spent more on their lawsuits against Brightline than on upkeep.

I asked Mike Reininger, the executive director of All Aboard Florida’s parent company, whether passage of the bill would delay the start of full train service. (It is scheduled to begin service from Miami to West Palm Beach in September.) “It certainly becomes much harder, it takes much longer, it becomes much more expensive,” he said. Creating new regulatory obstacles “could effectively block the project altogether.”

Reininger appreciates that we are having a “national conversation on our need to make improvements to our transport infrastructure and the need for the private sector to get engaged in that problem solving,” and notes that Brightline would be “the first express passenger rail built on a private basis for 100 years.”

It’s the sort of thing policymakers in Washington are going to be debating how to have more of. Less governmental obstruction would be a good start.

Morris throws complete game

jseverson@shawmedia.com SHABBONA – With the Indian Creek baseball team in the midst of playing four conference games in four days, Jordan Morris did his part to lighten the load for the Timberwolves’ pitching staff.

The junior starting pitcher threw a complete game and had a big day at the plate as the Timberwolves cruised to a 10-0 victory over Hinckley-Big Rock in five innings on Wednesday afternoon in Shabbona.

Morris finished throwing a two-hitter on 60 pitches, meaning he now needs two days of rest before he can throw again under the new IHSA pitch count rules, and went 3 for 3 at the plate with two RBIs for the Timberwolves, calling it likely the best overall game of his career.

“With the new pitch count rules, it’s huge for him to give other guys another day of rest,” Indian Creek coach Kevin Poterek said of Morris’ complete game.

“Just confidence, too. He threw well for five innings. Going out and throwing a solid game helps us in multiple ways – it saves arms and confidence.”

It was the third game in as many days for both the Timberwolves and Royals. Indian Creek (3-5 overall, 3-3 in Little Ten Conference) split a pair of games against Leland-Earlville earlier in the week, including an 8-6 win on Tuesday, and Hinckley-Big Rock (1-6 overall, 1-4 in Little Ten) was coming off a rough two-game stretch against a talented Somonauk team, which beat the Royals by a combined 46-2.

“They’re a little mentally down,” Hinckley-Big Rock coach Brandon Jackson said. “We’re a pretty young team. We’re mainly underclassmen and a lot of kids who haven’t played in 5-10 years – when they were little.

They’re still getting back in the swing of things, but we have to pick it up.

We’re halfway through the year now.”

Jackson said that he felt the Royals did a nice job getting contact against Morris, with six of the outs coming on fly balls to the outfield. Morris scattered four strikeouts on the day, but for the most part got the benefit of a nearly flawless defensive performance behind him. At one point, he retired eight consecutive batters after Hinckley-Big Rock’s Dakota Gum hit a double to the left field alley – seven of which came from a play in the field by the Indian Creek defense.

The Timberwolves scored in every inning except the fourth, when Hinckley-Big Rock starter Tate Sanderson retired the side in order. Indian Creek leadoff hitter Austin Sommerfeld opened the bottom of the first with a double to left field and eventually scored on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the second, Morris and Robert McCoy added RBI singles and in the bottom of the third, Cooper Larsen hit an RBI single and Olin Simpson eventually scored on a wild pitch.

The Timberwolves closed the game out with a four-run fifth inning, which had RBI singles by Morris and Joseph Wilson, an RBI double by pinch hitter Jared Wild and then courtesy runner Tyler Perkins scored the game-ending run on a wild pitch.

“We had a couple of games lately that we’ve been able to compete and put a couple of wins together in a row, it’s good for us,” Poterek said. “You can tell the dugout is a little more lively. The guys are more upbeat. You can tell it’s starting to take effect. We can do this.”

By the numbers: Seven different Indian Creek players got a hit on the day, including No. 2 hitter Griffin Rissman, who hit a leadoff single in the bottom of

the third and eventually scored. Along with Gum’s double, the other Hinckley-Big Rock player with a hit was HD Halstead, who had a single in the top of the fifth.

Beyond the stats: Morris only threw seven pitches in the top of the second, with all three outs coming on fly outs to center fielder Raymond Ragan.

They said it: “It’s been pretty brutal,” Jackson said of the new pitch-

count and mandatory rest rules this season. “We’ve had a couple kids pitch a couple days in a row – short pitches – and we’re almost exhausting all of our pitchers so far, especially when we played Somonauk (on Tuesday.)

They’re a good team and I used more than I would have wanted to.”

Up next: The two teams square off again today, playing at Hinckley-Big Rock at 4:30 p.m.

“The biggest accomplishment for the guys from the football program, not only did they compete at a very high level on the football field, but also they

did what they needed to do in the classroom,” DeKalb football coach Matt Weckler said. “And all of these guys, including the ones that signed in February, made great picks for the schools they’re going to in terms of academically and performance based.”

The cross country team had a pair of runners sign, both with Illinois-Springfield. Thomas Wuchte will compete on the men’s team and Claire Eaton on the women’s team. Both will run track as well.

“They’re both very strong students and they had a lot of different options,” DeKalb cross country coach Mike Wolf said. “So they had to look at the whole package – academics, athletics, the whole package. I think they made good choices, both of them.”

Ryan becomes just 3rd Knights coach of past 35 years

MAPLE PARK – Few have been called head football coach at Kaneland.

Pat Ryan has joined that select company.

The longtime assistant coach for the Knights was named just the third head coach at the school in the past 35 years at a school board meeting April 10.

“It’s kind of been a 10 years in the making for me,” Ryan said. “Ever since sixth grade, most kids grow up dreaming of being a player and I always dreamed of being a coach, and I always thought I was going to coach the Bears.

That’s been my joke. I guess I’ll settle for Kaneland High School.

“I’m super excited. Kaneland has been my home and my family for the last nine years and I can’t wait to get started.

The kids are great, I have a great group of guys to coach with and a supportive administration.”

Last season, Ryan served as the defensive coordinator for the Knights. In prior seasons, he coached the offensive

line and linebackers.

During the time that he has served as an assistant coach at Kaneland, the Knights compiled a 69-28 record.

“I’ve got a lot to live Pat Ryan up to here,” Ryan said. “I talked to [former coach] Joe Thorgesen over the weekend and when I first started here he was still on staff and Tom Fedderly was head coach, and I learned a lot from Joe in the few years we spent together. When Tom resigned I had read that there had only been two coaches in 35 years, which is pretty amazing, so I’m honored to be a part of such a great program.”

Ryan had previously been an assistant coach at the now-defunct Driscoll, which won five consecutive state titles from 2003-07 during his tenure at the Catholic school in Addison. Ryan also graduated and played football at Driscoll before playing at Carthage College.

“After 36 years in education, some of my best memories are standing on the platform in Champaign holding the

state championship trophy, not once, but five times,” said Fred Muehleman, former principal at Driscoll. “Pat Ryan helped to make that possible.”

Ryan also works as the RTI Facilitator at Kaneland and is an assistant boys track coach.

“This was a big hire for our high school and it wasn’t just me, we had a committee and brought in eight of the 50 applicants,” said Peter Goff, Kaneland’s athletic director. “He’s got a lot of great ideas and you could see when he coaches how excited he got and how the kids related so well to him. We’re excited to see where it goes from here and with him, it’s not just football, but track and as one of our RTI coordinators.”

Ryan stood out from the other applicants.

“During the second interview we asked to see different plans and everyone had some good ideas but Pat really stood out,” Goff said. “He’s got his eyes on the prize and we wanted to keep things rolling, so we’re excited to have him.”

Coincidentally, Ryan replaces

Fedderly who was an assistant for Thorgesen for 14 years, before getting the head coaching gig.

Fedderly went 4-5 during his first season, but proceeded to make the playoffs in seven of his 10 seasons, although the Knights have missed the playoffs in two of the past three years.

“There’s going to be some challenges, but I’m hoping that we can bring back a winning tradition,” Ryan said. “We’ve got a good nucleus of kids coming back and we’ve got some strong seniors next year.”

Quarterback Jack Douglas, running back Jonathan Alstott, fullback Chaz Shaw, wide receivers Alex Moses and Josh Marczuk and linemen Matt Payton and Drew Hahn are just a handful of the top players who are set to return next fall.

“We like what we have back, but we know there are some challenges, including in the middle school, which has struggled a bit,” Ryan said. “It’s something we definitely can work on and I’m just excited for the opportunity and to get started.”

DeKalb and Genoa-Kingston each held spring signing days on Wednesday, and each school will provide NCAA Division III football power Wisconsin-Whitewater with a receiver.

In all, 35 players from three schools – G-K, DeKalb and Kaneland – signed National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, including DeKalb’s Zuerek Day and Genoa-Kingston’s Zach Miller each with the powerhouse.

“Most definitely I’m looking to get some playing time down there my first year,” Day said. “That’s looking to be my expectation. As long as I get down there and put in work this summer like I’m supposed to, it will be good.”

Miller said the chance to play for a school with the winning tradition that Whitewater has – six title since 2007, the last of which was in 2014 – is special.

“They’re always winning,” Miller said. “They have a great campus, and the coaching staff makes me feel like I was at home as I soon as I met them.”

Bulls back in playoffs after year absence

jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – It won’t happen anytime soon.

Definitely not in the wake of beating Brooklyn’s junior varsity squad, 112-73, on Wednesday night to earn a playoff berth and crawl into the final spot of the Eastern Conference playoffs with a 41-41 record.

Gar Forman has more tact than that.

However, the next time Forman feels pushed into a corner or his competency as Bulls general manager again comes into question, he’ll play the playoff card and let everyone know that his franchise has now reached the postseason in eight of the past nine years.

No titles, not even a Finals appearance, but sustained mediocrity at its finest.

Thanks to Jimmy Butler’s 25 points, as well as a Nets organization that made the decision to sit six players so they could “evaluate” the depth of a 20-win roster, the Bulls returned to the playoffs after missing out last season in Fred Hoiberg’s rookie year as coach.

With Indiana beating Atlanta, the Bulls stayed in that No. 8 spot and will head to Beantown to take on top-seeded Boston for Game 1 on Sunday. They split the regular-season series with the Celtics, going 2-2.

Not bad for a team that looked dead in the water about three weeks ago.

“Looks can be very deceiving,” Butler said with a grin after the victory. “We’re not worried about who we’re playing.

We’ve got to focus in ourselves, play the best Bulls basketball that we can.

“We’re in there. It’s all about who’s playing the best basketball at the right time.”

Which the Bulls are doing, winning seven of their past nine to get to this point.

“I don’t think the goal here is just to make the playoffs,” Butler said. “We want to win. That’s what we talked about at the beginning of the year. I think we all did our job to get us into the playoffs.

Now it’s about winning some games.”

Meanwhile, the big loser of the NBA’s regular-season finale? Miami, which finished tied with the Bulls at 41-41, but lost out on the tiebreaker.

Almost lost in what took place for the Bulls on Wednesday was the fact that veteran Dwyane Wade will again be in the playoffs, while his former team down on South Beach missed out.

Wade left the Heat this offseason after 13 years, joining the Bulls as a free agent, but playoff hopes looked dim after the veteran dislocated his elbow back on March 15, and was expected to miss the rest of the regular season.

It was then that he told Butler to do whatever he could in his power to will this team to the playoffs so that Wade could return.

Butler did just that, carrying the Bulls to a 7-4 record without Wade, welcoming the three-time champion back for the final three games.

All Butler’s done down the stretch is average 26.4 points, 7.6 assists and 6.0 rebounds a contest over his past 10 games, including a triple-double in the win over Philadelphia.

“I didn’t know how good he was,” Wade said of what Butler’s done the last month. “I think we all are seeing the evolution of Jimmy Butler. I can’t say anybody, even Jimmy, knew that he would be this player right now. The biggest thing that surprised me is he’s a clutch player. For a guy who hasn’t had a lot of clutch moments in his career, he’s as clutch as it gets. Every time it’s a big shot, it seems like he makes it.”

Toews ready to leave last year’s scoreless playoffs behind

mpotash@suntimes.com An innately team player, Jonathan Toews doesn’t revel in his reputation as a difference-making winner. But he can’t totally ignore it either.

So a year after Toews failed to score a goal in a 4-3 first-round series loss to the Blues, the Blackhawks’ captain acknowledged at least a bit of personal motivation to be the difference-making player he has been throughout his career. Last year’s series against the Blues marked the first time Toews had not scored in a playoff series the Hawks lost.

“Obviously last year, not being able

to score in that round – it’s one of those things you feel like if you had one or two [goals] maybe it could have been the difference in a game or two,” said Toews, who Jonathan has scored 39 goals in Toews 124 playoff games.

But as determined as he is to make a bigger impact in the playoffs this season, Toews does not want to get caught trying to hard. His work ethic has been the biggest key to his success in the playoffs, often putting him in the right place at the right time.

“I can’t be thinking about that and

putting too much pressure on myself,” Toews said. “I’ve just got to play and get that feeling of [getting] that lucky bounce – you’re going to work for that bounce and you’re going to earn it.

“The more you work for things, the more they’ll go your way. It’s just [about] having that excitement, that positive feel that as individuals we all have what it takes to contribute and make the difference for our team.”

Toews is one of six players who have won three Stanley Cups under Joel Quenneville. He knows this is a golden opportunity for No. 4, but isn’t getting ahead of himself. He never does.

“It’s a long road to get there. It’s a

long enough road to get where we are right now,” he said. “We’re happy about the way the season’s gone and where we’re at as a team. We’re right where we want to be going into the playoffs. We’re as prepared as we can be.

“I don’t think you can look that far ahead and think about winning the Cup. It’s one shift, one period at a time and nothing more than that. You feel like you can just keep surviving no matter what and when you’re at the end, playing for the Cup, it doesn’t feel surprising that you’re there. But for now, we’ll worry about this series right now. We know it’s going to be one heck of a challenge.”

with a walk to Joc Pederson but retired Chase Utley on a strikeout to limit the damage to just one run.

Lackey wound up pitching six innings, giving up four hits and the one run. He walked three and struck out 10, giving him 22 games with double-digit strikeouts.

The Cubs scored no runs against Dodgers starter Brandon McCarthy but not because they didn’t hit the ball hard. Double plays helped McCarthy in each of the first two innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, Jason Heyward led off with a single. Willson Contreras crushed a pitch to keep left field, but a cold wind held the ball up and kept it in the park. Anthony Rizzo hit one to deep center in the sixth after Kris Bryant walked with one out, but again, the wind knocked the ball down.

Ring ceremony wraps 2016 championship celebration

bmiles@dailyherald.com CHICAGO – Cubs players could hardly contain their anticipation Wednesday before receiving their World Series rings before the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Selected fans, including several from the suburbs, who won a contest, presented the rings to the players.

“I don’t know how they’re going to keep their composure,” said first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who gave a nod toward team chairman Tom Ricketts.

What a cool experience for the fans. Mr. Ricketts preaches to us, ‘It’s all about the fans.’ ” It was even more special for Cubs infielder Javy Baez.

“I know the girl who is giving me my ring is handicapped like my sister; it’s going to change her life,” he said.

Baez’s sister, Noely, died two years ago at 21.

It’s been quite a week for Baez. On Tuesday, he was honored as the city of Chicago named part of a Humboldt Park street “Javier ‘Javy’ Baez Way.” At 24, Baez is off to a fast start to his major-league career.

“It’s like a dream, man; it’s like a dream,” he said. “Obviously, it’s early in my career for all this to be happening. Just really excited and live in the moment.”

Not just the pitchers: Much of the talk about the new Wrigley Field bullpens, under the bleachers, has been about the pitchers. But outfielders have to contend with the new glass doors.

The doors allow the pitchers in the bullpen to see out onto the field, but from the other side, fans see a green door.

“It (the ball) comes off a little bit hotter,” said left fielder Kyle Schwarber.

“It’s more Plexiglass out there. You’ve got to be more aware of how that ball’s to come out. You’ve got to know how hard the ball is hit. If it’s smoked off it, it can go back a good amount. It’s just something to be heads-up about.”

CHICAGO – On the way to a world championship last year, Cubs pitcher John Lackey uttered one of the best lines of the season.

“I didn’t come here for a haircut,” he said. “I came here for jewelry.”

Lackey’s locks may or may not need trimming, but he did get his jewelry Wednesday night before pitching against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs received their rings for winning the 2016 World Series. Lackey picked his up before heading out to the bullpen to warm up for his start.

Lackey allowed a leadoff homer to start the game, and the Dodgers hung on to win 2-0, putting a damper on the

ring celebration.

The Cubs signed Lackey to a twoyear deal in December 2015, and one of the reasons they got him was to provide the club with a little edginess. Lackey can be a mite prickly at times, but the Cubs felt they needed that type of spice.

“We thought that from the beginning,” manager Joe Maddon said. “We talked about that Tuesday game in a particular city where the other team might not be doing as well to have that edge to go out there and play well and that Johnny would provide it. That was exactly part of the conversation. He is.

He’s all of that.

“But he’s always been that guy. Even when he was a rookie, he was kind of like that. But right now, I know he appreciates what happened.”

Holland impressive as Sox even series

CLEVELAND – Chris Sale is gone, Carlos Rodon is hurt, and the White Sox’s starting rotation is … just fine?

Indeed. Better than fine, in fact, as left-hander Derek Holland was in the Sox’s 2-1 victory Wednesday against the Indians at Progressive Field.

Signed to a one-year deal in the offseason to cover innings left by the traded Sale, Holland pitched six frames of two-run ball in his Sox debut against the Twins on Friday at Guaranteed Rate Field, and topped that with six innings of scoreless, one-hit work against the defending American League champions.

He pitched around four walks, striking out four.

Since Jose Quintana served up three homers and lost to the Tigers on Opening Day, Sox starters Holland, James Shields, Quintana and Miguel Gonzalez have made good on six straight winnable starts, posting a 2.06 ERA. “That’s good,” Holland said. “We feed off each other.’’

The bullpen has been pretty good, too, ranking second in the AL in ERA going into Wednesday’s game. Anthony Swarzak pitched a perfect seventh with two strikeouts in his Sox debut, Nate Jones kept a potential big inning at one run in the eighth and David Robertson pitched

a perfect ninth.

The win, following a 2-1 loss in 10 innings in the Indians’ home opener Tuesday, improved the Sox record to 3-4.

Holland, an Ohio native, lowered his career ERA in the Indians’ park to 1.02, the lowest of any visiting pitcher there with at least 30 innings of work. He is 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA. “He continues to try to pound the zone, and he’s been able to keep them off-balance,” manager Rick Renteria said. “He is spotting his fastball very well and his secondary pitches have been very good.”

This start had special meaning for Holland because his grandmother, Pat Henderson, who died during spring training, saw him pitch for the last time here.

Holland said he will write “Granny” in the dirt on the back side of the mound in all of his starts this season.

“I love pitching here. This is where I’m from,” he said. “This game meant a lot more to me. This is where she got to see me pitch for the last time.”

Holland had all sorts of things, emotional and otherwise, racing through his mind. When Francisco Lindor stepped up to lead off the Indians’ sixth, the scoreboard showed Holland finishing his warmup tosses and read, “Derek Holland, currently pitching a no-hitter.”

“I saw it,” Holland said. “You got to do what you got to do to break it up. I understand. I had fans yelling at me from the fourth on, telling me ‘Hey you got a no-hitter.’ I was like, ‘Thank you Captain Obvious. I kind of know that.’ ” Indians right-hander Danny Salazar was about as good, if not better, than Holland, striking out 11 and allowing less hard contact than Holland in six innings.

The Sox got to Salazar in the second when Cody Asche walked, advanced to third on Avisail Garcia’s double and

scored two runs on Matt Davidson’s single to left.

Davidson, a last-minute replacement for the ill Todd Frazier at third base, tied Garcia for the team RBI lead with five.

Garcia has hit safely in all seven games.

Those two runs were just enough, thanks mainly to “The Dutch Oven.”

“He was amazing tonight,” said Robertson, who has six strikeouts in three scoreless innings of work. “He looked very calm and relaxed. Threw a lot of pitches that were close [ball-strike] calls that could have gone either way. He filled up the zone and did what a starter is supposed to do.”

Frazier, Soto scratched from Wednesday’s lineup

CLEVELAND – Two White Sox were scratched from the starting lineup before their game against the Indians on Wednesday.

Todd Frazier, who played through flu-like symptoms Tuesday, was removed from the lineup a few hours before the game, and catcher Geovany Soto was scratched about an hour prior with a sore right elbow and replaced by Omar Narvaez.

“Today [Frazier] showed up and is a little under the weather so we’ll kind of watch him a little and make sure we don’t aggravate it more than we have to,” manager Rick Renteria said.

Matt Davidson started at third base and drove in the first two runs of the game with a single to left against righthander Danny Salazar in the second in-

ning. Davidson was 4 for 9 with a home run as a designated hitter and pinch hitter going in.

Renteria seemed optimistic that Frazier would play in the series finale Thursday. There was no immediate word from the Sox on the extent of Soto’s issue, except that it apparently was something that surfaced during batting practice.

Catching up: Narvaez got his third start and likely will catch up with Soto’s playing time soon, and not only because of Soto’s elbow. Renteria said before the game the anticipated scenario is to have Narvaez catch more than half the games.

“I don’t want to keep running Geo back out there,” Renteria said. “We did already three days in a row, which wasn’t actually planned on.”

James Shields and Derek Holland had both pitched well with Soto, the

34-year-old veteran, behind the plate, but Renteria talked like he didn’t want to get stuck in the pattern of matching catchers with particular pitchers, especially if an offensive matchup proves favorable.

“We’ll continue to mix and match,” Renteria said.

Struggling May gets day off: Center fielder Jacob May did not start after starting the season – and his career -- at 0 for 14 with six strikeouts and not much hard contact to speak of.

Renteria said the plan to play the rookie four or five days a week remains in place.

“We’re going to give him a day to collect himself,” said Renteria, who started Leury Garcia in center.

“I told him, ‘I’m not worried. Just keep playing and have fun.’ Just keep working through the experience he’s having right now. He’s put a little pres-

sure on himself.”

May did some early work with the hitting coaches.

“There’s always a learning curve when you get to the big leagues,’’ Renteria said. “I want him to stay relaxed and know he’s going to be out there playing.”

May was given the starting nod when Charlie Tilson (right foot) was sidelined early in spring training.

Chase scenes: Tim Anderson was batting .192, and although Renteria wasn’t too worried considering the small sample size, “there have been some at-bats where he’s kind of gotten out of the zone a little bit,” he said. “Chased a little more than I’m comfortable seeing him do, but he’s aware of it.

“He has to get pitches more convenient for him to handle.”

Penguins win playoff opener PITTSBURGH – Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 31 shots in a surprise start in place of injured Matt Murray and the Pittsburgh Penguins opened their Stanley Cup title defense with a 3-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night.

Murray was scheduled to get the nod in the playoff opener but was a late scratch after suffering a lower-body injury during warm-ups.

Fleury withstood an early push by Columbus, and the Penguins responded by pulling away from the untested Blue Jackets.

Phil Kessel had a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh. Nick Bonino and Bryan Rust also scored, and Evgeni Malkin assisted on Rust and Kessel’s goals in his first game back after missing the final three weeks of the regular season because of an upper-body injury.

Matt Calvert scored for Columbus in the third period, and Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves.

Game 2 is Friday night in Pittsburgh.

Sycamore has rocky fifth in loss at Yorkville: Leading by five heading in,

the Spartans gave up seven runs despite just one Yorkville hit leaving the infield in a 7-5 loss.

“Everything that could go wrong did go wrong,” coach Jason Cavanaugh said of the frame, in which the Spartans committed three errors and gave up a go-ahead, three-run triple on an 0-2 pitch with two outs.

Three of the errors were committed by players Cavanaugh called the team’s most reliable fielders – shortstop Zach Carlsen and third baseman Logan Riley. He added that the hard infield had the Spartans off guard – Carlsen was hit in the head with a hard chopper that took a bad bounce the play before his error, Cavanaugh said, and that may have led to him being “skittish.”

Carlsen, James Marcinkowski and Tyler Didio each had two hits for the Spartans (8-3, 1-1), who had 11 hits on

the day.

The Sycamore softball team had a big fourth inning and held on for a 4-3 win over Yorkville on Wednesday in Sycamore.

With two outs and nobody on, Amanda Swedberg started a rally with a hit that was capped by a two-run single by Haley Trela to give the Spartans (4-6-1 overall, 2-2 in Northern Illinois Big 12) the lead for good and pitcher Faith Reynolds closed the game out in the final three innings.

Offensively, Reynolds was 2 for 2 with an RBI, Anna Criswell had a solo home run, Gracyn Gabriel was 2 for 4, and Lexi Gordon and Peck each added hits for the Spartans in the win.

“It was nice to see us come back from a rough end to our day yesterday,” Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter said of the Spartans allowing eight runs late in a 13-4 loss to Morris on Tuesday. “We had to battle through this one, but we put together some good pitching and pretty good defense to give ourselves a chance at a come back.”

The Spartans host Kaneland at 4:30 p.m. today.

The cast includes more than 80 children from DeKalb, Sycamore and several other communities.

Set at Christmas in the Great Depression, Annie – played by Genoa-Kingston Middle School student Molly Johnson – survives the hardknock life in a New York orphanage with dozens of other orphans. Annie’s nemesis, Miss Hannigan (Kinsley Judd of Genoa), a matron of worrisome ethics, runs the place.

Annie breaks out whenever possible to look for her parents, whom she knows she’ll meet again someday. On one memorable jailbreak, she befriends a lovable mutt, Sandy (William Akst of Sycamore).

Meanwhile, wealthy industrialist Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks (Jack Piaz-

za of Sycamore) wants to do something nice for a kid at Christmas, so he dispatches his assistant, Grace Farrell (Kaitlyn Bowman of Sycamore), to find an orphan to spend the holidays in the lap of luxury.

Further plot twists come from grifters Rooster Hannigan (Charlie Vivirito of DeKalb) and Lily St. Regis (Kendel Graham of Somonauk) trying to make a buck off Annie and a president (Matt Slade of Ashton) trying to sell America a New Deal.

Graham is excited about how well the production is coming together.

“We’re really happy with how well our actors are learning their lines, the music and stage direction,” she said.

“The kids have been working very hard for weeks, and the excitement is really building as we get closer to opening night. People who come to see ‘Annie Jr.’ are in for a treat.”

Performathon raises funds for school of the arts at NIU DAILY CHRONICLE The Northern Illinois University Music Building will come alive with music and excitement as the NIU Community School of the Arts celebrates Performathon 2017.

All community members are invited to enjoy live music performances, shop for music-related items, view a student art show, try bake sale treats, and enter to win raffle and silent auction prizes on Saturday, April 22. All funds raised benefit the NIU Community School scholarship programs.

More than 60 community school music students will perform on the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall Stage at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. CSA students have collected pledges from family and friends who support their playing, singing or artwork. Local businesses also support Performathon through advertising in the event’s program booklet and by donating prizes for the raffle. Prizes this year include a custom-painted violin, season tickets for the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra, game tickets for the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Wolves and Rockford IceHogs and more.

Musicians and music fans can browse and purchase pre-owned sheet music, CDs, vinyl, musical instruments, accessories and other music-related items at the Incredible Music Swap. An art exhibit with artworks contributed by the Art Express class students and a café-style bake sale featuring drinks and home-baked items also will be featured.

Since 1993, more than $100,000 has been raised by Performathon efforts, and 800 local students have received scholarships supporting their continued music and art studies. The NIU Community School of the Arts offers year-round private lessons, music ensembles and group classes in music and art for children and adults of all ages.

The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 10 a.m. and activities run through mid-afternoon.

Local historian to give ALPHA lecture DAILY CHRONICLE ALPHA: Friends of Antiquity’s last lecture of the spring series will feature local historian Steve Bigolin, who will present “Ellwood Family Homes in DeKalb and Sycamore” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in room 102 of the Jack Arends Visual Arts Building on the Northern Illinois University campus.

Bigolin was a founding member of ALPHA in 1971 when he was a student at NIU. Ellwood House Museum at 509 N. First St. in DeKalb is a familiar local landmark even if people have never taken a tour of it. However, this presentation will spotlight where

the family lived before construction of their grand mansion. The earlier residence stood for 151 years, until June 2011.

Only one other Ellwood sibling made his home in DeKalb, though, with the rest of the clan calling Sycamore home. Reuben Ellwood’s Sycamore residence had a hotel built around it in the 1920s. Chauncey Ellwood had a large pond in the back of his home. James Edmund Ellwood’s house was moved in 1989 to save it from demolition. Abram Ellwood’s property still contains an outhouse on its grounds.

Back in DeKalb, meanwhile, the Will Ellwood mansion was torn down for an apartment complex. Perry

Ellwood’s original home was donated to Ellwood House to see it preserved.

Harriet Mayo’s two homes, while still standing, are both no longer private residences. Mary Lewis’ house has had one family living in it for nearly 100 years.

ALPHA was founded in 1971 and continues to present lectures to promote the importance of Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan, Roman, Byzantine, Near Eastern and all ancient civilizations, as well as local history. All lectures are free and open to the public.

Theater to present ‘The Good Woman of Szechwan’ DAILY CHRONICLE Northern Illinois University’s production of “The Good Woman of Szechwan” provides a glimpse into a world where the structure of society has fallen and everyone is doing what they can to survive in the slums.

Director Kendra Holton sets the scene in “stylized China, but really anywhere. All places where man is exploited by man. Maybe here. Maybe soon.”

“The Good Woman of Szechwan,”

by Bertolt Brecht, was written in 1942.

Brecht had recently become a refugee in the U.S. during World War II when the Nazi regime rose to power. He wanted to show his resistance from Germany by creating a series of five plays to show how corrupt this world could become. “The Good Woman of

Szechwan” was the last of those five.

When the main character Shen Te, played by first-year MFA in acting candidate Emily Vitrano, receives money from a good deed, she opens a tobacco shop and very quickly takes on an unexpected role. She is soon expected to help everyone in need.

When things become difficult, Shen Te “creates this alternate persona that comes in and does all the dirty work,” says Vitrano.

“This play is a parable about maintaining morality while impoverished, and the complexities of human duality and liminality in response to societal collapse,” Holton said in a news release.

When asked what type of message she wants to send home to the audience, Holton responded: “What is goodness? How much of it is required

to change the fate of our world? How much strain can we take? How are we responsible? Who will be held accountable? What are we to do?”

Justin Cahill, who plays Sun, the love interest of Shen Te, said in the release, “This is going to be so fun, even for how serious the topics may be.”

Stage Coach Players present ‘Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike’ DAILY CHRONICLE Stage Coach Players will open its 2017 Black Box production, “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” a comedy by Christopher Durang, on April 20.

“We live in a time of light-speed technological advances and constant social media bombardment,” director Wendy Tritt, said in a news release. “We see some of the consequences of this with Vanya and his adopted sister Sonia, who have frittered their lives away in their family’s farmhouse in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. To make matters

worse, their addled housekeeper, Cassandra, frequently dispenses alarming prophecies.”

While Vanya and Sonia stayed home to take care of their ailing parents, their sister, Masha, was gallivanting around the world as a successful actress and movie star. She suddenly returns home with her 20-something boy toy, Spike, and announces that she is selling the farmhouse. The stage is set for an absurd weekend of hilarity and global warming.

Christine Malecki of Sycamore remembers a time when her 16-yearold son Jonah was not invited to his classmates’ birthday parties or social activities.

After participating in eight Children’s Community Theatre Penguin Project productions, Malecki said she no longer has that problem. Jonah, who has autism, now has lasting friendships with the people he has met through the Penguin Project.

“He wanted so much to be a part of that, to be invited, join in and feel welcome,” Christine Malecki said. “Being a part of the Penguin Project was probably the best decision we ever made.

They don’t focus on or treat the artists as a disability. Instead, they focus on their abilities. They have so much talent, and the productions showcase their singing and dancing. Jonah is now in high school, and he is part of the advanced choir. I don’t think that would have happened without his involvement in the Penguin Project.”

Jonah Malecki is one of the artists featured in “Go Penguins!,” an 84-minute documentary that took a behindthe-scenes look at the 2013 production of “The Little Mermaid.” Jonah and his parents were interviewed for a segment in the documentary.

“Go Penguins!” debuted on Sunday, April 9, with a showing for the community at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St. in DeKalb.

CCT’s Penguin Project is one of 14 Penguin Project troupes in the country. The program allows disabled children and young adults age 10 to 22, called artists, the opportunity to perform a musical on stage. The artists are joined on stage by peer mentors, children their same age without disabilities. The artists and mentors work together from May until September, until their final production.

32 Exercise, diet help reduce risk for vascular dementia Dear Doctor: My dad has just been diagnosed with vascular dementia. What is it?

Can it be prevented?

Dear Reader: Dementia is a general term used to categorize symptoms that relate to the decline or loss of cognitive function.

These include confusion, memory loss, impaired language skills, changes in personality or behavior, and the inability to think clearly or perform everyday tasks. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, which accounts for between 60 and 80 percent of all dementia cases. The mental impairment of Alzheimer’s disease results from a series of complex changes that take place within the structure of the brain itself.

Vascular dementia, which also is called vascular cognitive impairment, causes the majority of non-Alzheimer’s cases of dementia. It occurs when the blood vessels in the body, known as the vascular system, become blocked, diseased or damaged, and are unable to provide the brain with normal blood flow. This deprives the brain of adequate oxygen and nutrition, which causes brain cells to die. The resulting injury, which prevents different parts of the brain from communicating with one another, causes symptoms of dementia.

Hardening and narrowing of the arteries, a major stroke or a series of small strokes can cause vascular dementia. In the case of major stroke, symptoms of vascular dementia can appear suddenly.

But quite often, the disease builds slowly.

As blood flow to the brain decreases, mental impairment gradually becomes more pronounced.

At this time, vascular dementia cannot be reversed, but there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing it.

Although the disease is rare before age 65, the cardiovascular problems that led to it can begin to develop well before then.

That’s why it’s important to know your numbers, and to monitor blood pressure on a regular basis.

To reduce blood pressure, maintain a healthy weight. It’s also wise to keep track of your waistline measurements. Men who measure more than 40 inches at the waist and women whose waistlines measure more than 35 inches are at increased risk of developing high blood pressure.

Get moving. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of vascular dementia by 40 percent. Just 30 minutes of exercise at moderate intensity – you’ll be able to speak but not sing – three times a week helps protect both your heart and your brain.

If you’ve been following this column for even a few weeks you know what’s coming next – don’t smoke. If you do smoke, please stop. Yes, we know that’s hard. We also know your family doctor would love to help you.

Eat a healthy diet: lean meats, fresh fish, legumes, whole grains, seeds, nuts, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Skip the sugar if you can. Limit simple carbs such as pasta, rice, bread and processed cereals.

Limit how much alcohol you drink. Even in moderation, alcohol has been linked to dementia risk, particularly as we get older.

After having three consecutive sixheart contracts while playing with my wife online at bridgebase.com last month, the next evening, the robots (computer-controlled opponents) got some revenge in this deal.

Note North’s correct two-diamond response. With game-going values, bid your longest suit first. Since the robots use two-over-one game-forcing, I would have been inclined to rebid two hearts with that South hand, but the robots were playing that three clubs promised extra strength.

The next two calls were natural, then four no-trump was Roman Key Card Blackwood. South’s six-heart reply showed an odd number of key cards (here, two aces and the heart king) and a spade void. Scientific bidders, those robots!

I led my singleton diamond.

Declarer rose with dummy’s ace and, presumably in the dummy for the last time, cashed all four spade winners, discarding three clubs and a diamond from hand. Then South drew trumps and conceded one diamond trick.

(Yes, the fourth spade was unnecessarily dangerous.)

There were four tables in six notrump, which had 12 top tricks. Two pairs of robots tried six diamonds after the sequence one heart - two diamonds - three clubs - three no-trump - six diamonds. One was favored by the heart-jack start, but the other faced the club-jack lead, after which the contract was unmakable without the aid of X-ray vision.

The other 11 tables were in six hearts. One robot even made an overtrick when West led a low club, and declarer guessed to put up dummy’s queen.
