Investigation of Trump’s charity wins Pulitzer Prize The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – The biggest U.S. news story of 2016 – the tumultuous presidential campaign – yielded a Pulitzer Prize on Monday for the Washington Post reporter who not only raised doubts about Donald Trump’s charitable giving, but also revealed that the candidate had been recorded crudely bragging about grabbing women.

David A. Fahrenthold won the prize for national reporting, with the judges citing stories that examined Trump’s charitable foundation and called into question whether the real estate magnate was as generous as he claimed.

Fahrenthold’s submission also included his story about Trump’s raunchy behind-thescenes comments during a 2005 taping of “Access Hollywood.” His talk about groping women’s genitals rocked the White House race and prompted a rare apology from the then-candidate.

In another election-related prize, Peggy

Noonan of The Wall Street Journal won the Pulitzer for commentary for columns that “connected readers to the shared virtues of Americans during one of the nation’s most divisive political campaigns.”

The judges said Fahrenthold’s reporting “created a model for transparent journalism,” a model he built partly by using Twitter to publicize his efforts and let Trump see what he was doing. The president “can expect to see more of me on Twitter,” said Fahrenthold, now part of a team looking at Trump businesses.

American journalism’s most distinguished prizes also recognized work that shed light on international financial intrigue and held local officials accountable.

The New York Daily News and ProPublica won the Pulitzer in public service for uncovering how authorities used an obscure law, originally enacted to crack down on prostitution in Times Square in the 1970s, to evict hundreds of people, mostly poor minorities, from their homes.

Health department officials consider next steps after referendum fails

Challenges to public health services are expected to continue, with state funding still uncertain and a referendum projected to bring in $500,000 a year for the DeKalb County Health Department denied by voters.

A proposal that would have increased property taxes about $9.50 per $100,000 in assessed value to support public health services was rejected April 4 by a vote of 55.9 percent (7,715 votes) to 44 percent (6,068 votes).

Lisa Gonzalez, director of the DeKalb County Public Health Department, said state grant funding has been declining for years, and the services most at risk for reduction or elimination, such as maternal and child health, are grant-funded.

“We don’t know from year to year what’s going to be funded and what’s not,” she said. “So, if tomorrow a grant was totally eliminated funding-wise, then services would probably have to go, too, because we don’t have the dollars to support the programs without the grant funds.”

Well-child clinics already have been eliminated. HIV/ sexual disease prevention services, family case management programs, and programs to prevent heart disease, cancer and diabetes have been reduced.

Gonzalez said that after learning the outcome of the vote, department leadership must find ways to contain costs and generate additional revenue.

She said DeKalb County is nearing the start of another Illinois Project for Local Assessment of Needs assessment, which identifies three to four health priorities for the community, so improvements can be made to those services over the next five years.

are. The timing of that is good, because it will give us more data to drive our decision-making.”

“At this point, all I can say

Lux said the group will analyze the results of the vote, including which areas voted for and against the referendum, to determine what can be learned.

“We’ll mull it over, process it, see what conclusions are to be drawn,” she said.

Lux said most people the group had contacted about the referendum clearly could see the need for funding public health services, but the cost to taxpayers also was a heavy consideration.

“I think it is a hard decision when people have to weigh the costs and the benefits,” she said. “In the end,

it was a close vote, but there were more people against it.”

She and Gonzalez see a silver lining: The referendum increased awareness of public health and the financial challenges it faces.

As a new director, Gonzalez was glad to see the support, although the vote did not end in the department’s favor.

“I think one of the struggles in public health is that we never have done historically a good job in articulating what is it that we do,” she said. “It really is something we should have been doing a long time ago, and this effort really did give us the opportunity to talk about what is it that we do, what is the value to the community.”

Council hears fire department report Increased emergency calls in some areas of DeKalb a concern

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Since 1985, the number of fire and emergency requests for service has grown from 2,049 cases to 5,584 in 2016, according to the department’s annual report, which was presented Monday to the City Council.

Although DeKalb Fire Chief Eric Hicks said that he expected a 2 percent increase in the number of responses over the next 10 years, there is some concern in the increase of calls in certain response areas of the city.

The city’s third fire station at 950 W. Dresser Road, which serves the west and northwest portions of

DeKalb, responded to 2,361 incidents in 2016. The next highest was the first station at 700 Pine St., which serves the central and northeast side of town and responded to 1,727 incidents.

Station 2 at 1154 S. Seventh St., which serves almost all of DeKalb south of Lincoln Highway, only responded to 1,494 incidents.

“There’s concern about that, especially in the northwest quadrant of DeKalb,” Hicks said. “With the north side of town having double the calls of the south side, the south will have to respond to some, which increases response times and leaves that side unprotected.”

The three stations also underwent significant work in 2016, including new paint and carpet in the locker room of Station 1, a new tile floor in the kitchen and LED lighting on the apparatus floor of Station 2, and wall and ceiling updates to the apparatus floor of Station 3.

NIU student faces battery charges after incident

SYCAMORE – A Northern Illinois University student who prosecutors say choked a woman multiple times during an incident in and around his dorm room was released on his own recognizance Monday.

Sharrod A. Hill, 19, of Chicago was arrested by NIU police hours after the incident, which occurred about 2:30 a.m. Sunday at Stevenson Hall, court records show.

Hill forced himself on the victim and groped her, according to a police synopsis in court records. After she

stopped him, they both left the room and took the elevator to the ground floor. Before the victim, who is not an NIU student, could leave the elevator, he grabbed her by the neck and said, “You’re not leaving me,” according to court records.

After getting away once again, she went to the south tower’s front desk, where her sister met her. Saying Hill “walked aggressively” toward her and her sister, the victim punched him in the face, fearing he would assault her sister, court records show.

As part of his bond, Hill is not allowed any contact with either the victim or her sister.

If convicted of the most serious offense, aggravated domestic battery, Hill could face three to seven years in

prison.

NIU spokesman Joe King said federal privacy laws prevent the university from commenting on specific cases, but added that discipline for such an incident could range from a ban from campus to expulsion.

Because the details of the reported assault – in Hill’s room, in the hall’s elevator and in the dining hall – were sexual in nature, prosecutor Alicia Kaplan asked that Hill’s bond be set at $10,000. She said if Hill is convicted, he could be required to register as a sex offender.

His next court appearance is 9 a.m.

news@daily-chronicle.com BATAVIA – Anthony Isom of DeKalb was serving an internship with the village of Campton Hills when he met Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke at a municipal government association breakfast a couple of years ago.

Impressed with the mayor, Isom decided he would be interested in working for the city of Batavia if he got the opportunity.

That chance has materialized, and Isom last week started work as assistant to City Administrator Laura Newman.

Isom has a master’s degree in public administration from Northern Illinois University, worked for the DeKalb County Housing Authority and served the Campton Hills internship as assistant to the village administrator.

“I wanted to pursue a career in my field of study and work with people,” Isom said. “Working with the city of Batavia is what I’ve always wanted.”

Anthony Isom has been hired in Batavia as assistant to City Administrator Laura Newman.

At the Batavia Government Center, Isom will serve in direct support to Newman, who took over the top city staff post last year.

Isom will have a wide range of administrative duties, from responding to inquiries and complaints from the public to confirming the accura-

cy of details in city communications.

The administrative assistant also will produce special reports and surveys, legal notices and work on contract bids, as well as serving as a recording secretary to city boards and commissions when needed.

“He has a passion for municipal government, and we’re lucky to have him,” Newman said.

Isom’s role is expected to include plenty of contact with the public, and facilitating coordination between the city’s departments.

“I’m going to serve in any capacity I can,” Isom said, “and learn from all the great people who are here.”

SYCAMORE – Twelve teens received citations for marijuana or alcohol possession Friday after a police officer caught a whiff of marijuana smoke coming from a house on West Elm Street.

According to a news release sent Monday by Sycamore police, an officer smelled the smoke coming from a house in the 300 block of West Elm Street and made contact with the people there.

After an investigation, Wesley A. Ranken, 18, of Sycamore was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, and possession of less than 30 grams of marijuana. He posted $500 bond Saturday.

Eldon T. King, 19, of Sycamore was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and underage possession of alcohol. Morgan P. Brons, Anthony J.D. Kolnak, Dylan R. Moore and Joshua M. Schoeler, all 18 of Sycamore, and six juveniles, five from Sycamore and one from Rochelle, all were cited for underage possession of alcohol, according to the news release.

Joint Review Board to discuss TIF funding

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The city’s Joint Review Board, composed of representatives of various local taxing bodies, will meet Thursday to review the effectiveness of tax increment financing investments within the city’s two TIF districts during 2016.

Last year, three public meetings were held that discussed the three DeKalb wards that include the districts.

The meetings were meant to gain public input as the city prepared a development plan for how TIF funding would be allocated before the two TIF districts expire within the next few years.

Lincoln Highway, which will require $400,000 in TIF dollars.

News from across the state Criminal case judge fatally shot outside his home

CHICAGO – A judge who oversaw criminal cases in Cook County was shot to death early Monday outside his Chicago home and a woman he knew was shot and wounded, police said.

Investigators are looking at the possibility that the shooting of Associate Circuit Court Judge Raymond Myles and the acquaintance could have been part of an attempted robbery, although police don’t believe anything was stolen from the victims or the house. Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Myles also “may have been targeted for one

reason or another.”

“The offender shot him numerous times,” Guglielmi said.

No arrests have been made in the shootings that happened around 5 a.m. on Chicago’s South Side. Myles was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Since the woman who was shot is a witness to a killing, her name is not expected to be released, Guglielmi said. Chief of Detectives Melissa Staples described the woman as a close associate of Myles and said she was shot once and is expected to survive.

General Assembly takes break – with no budget

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois General Assembly left the capital city last week for a two-week spring break – without progress on an annual budget.

The House approved an $817 million spending plan Democrats call a “lifeline.”

State Rep. Drury explores run for Illinois governor

SPRINGFIELD – A third-term Illinois state representative said he’s considering a run for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2018.

Scott Drury said Monday that he wants to stop the “partisan bickering, public corruption and uncontrolled violence” in Illinois. He blames both Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan for the two-year budget stalemate.

The former assistant U.S. attorney from Highwood was notable in January when the 100th General Assembly was sworn in.

He was the only Democrat not to vote in favor on Madigan’s election to a 17th term as speaker.

If you aim to be bumped, sit near the gate agent’s desk so you can pounce before other passengers take that offer of travel vouchers, gift cards, and sometimes cash. If offered a spot on a later flight, make sure it’s a confirmed seat. And don’t check a bag.

Niles woman pulls stone slabs on top of her, dies

NILES – A 77-year-old Niles woman has died after two large stone slabs fell on top of her home.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Mary Sullivan was at her home in Niles on Friday when in an attempt to keep from falling, grabbed the stone slabs leaning against the stairwell she was on.

The slabs fell on top of her.

An autopsy found she died of mechanical asphyxia and entrapment under the stone slabs, and her death was ruled an accident by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Gorsuch sworn into Supreme Court, restores conservative tilt

WASHINGTON – Justice Neil Gorsuch took his place in history Monday as the newest addition on the bench of the Supreme Court, restoring a narrow conservative majority and marking a much-needed political victory for President Donald Trump.

Gorsuch was sworn in during a sunsoaked ceremony in the Rose Garden, nearly 14 months after the seat was left vacant with the unexpected death of Justice Antonin Scalia. The oath was administered during the White House ceremony by Justice Anthony Kennedy, whom Gorsuch once served as a law clerk. A smiling Trump stood behind his nominee.

It was the second of two oaths – the first was conducted privately in the Justices’ Conference Room by Chief Justice John Roberts.

“To the Scalia family, I won’t ever forget that the seat I inherit today is that of a very, very great man,” Gorsuch said to the audience of family and administration staffers, as well as all the sitting Supreme Court justices.

“I will do all my powers permit to be a faithful servant of the Constitution and laws of this great nation,” he said.

Gorsuch joins the court that is often the final arbiter for presidential policy.

Speaking ahead of Gorsuch at the ceremony, Trump said that “our country is counting on you to be wise, impartial and fair, to serve under our laws, not over them, and to safeguard the right of the people to govern their

own affairs,” hinting at his own friction with the judiciary.

Gorsuch’s confirmation was a badly needed boost for an administration riddled with controversy and misstep. Trump failed to get enough Republicans on board to support his plan to repeal and replace President Barack Obama’s signature health care bill. His efforts to build a physical border wall with Mexico remain uncertain and his attempts to ban certain travelers from entering the U.S. because they pose a security threat have been blocked by the courts.

Trump was lighthearted about his latest win, saying that Gorsuch’s successful nomination came during his first 100 days in office and added: “You think that’s easy?”

Trump said Americans would see in Gorsuch “a man who is deeply faithful to the Constitution of the United States” and predicted greatness for the 49-year-old former appeals court judge from Colorado.

Gorsuch said he was humbled by his ascendance to the nation’s high court and thanked his former law clerks, saying of his former law clerks, “your names are etched in my heart forever.”

Scalia had anchored the court’s conservative wing for nearly three decades before he died unexpectedly in February 2016. In nominating Gorsuch, Trump said he fulfilled a campaign pledge to pick someone in the mold of Scalia.

Gorsuch is the youngest nominee since Clarence Thomas, who was 43 when confirmed in 1991.

DeKALB – The family-owned Chicago restaurant franchise America’s Dog & Burger is looking to open a new location in DeKalb within the next two years.

Co-founded by brothers Manolis and George Alpogianis, America’s Dog & Burger currently has three locations: Navy Pier, O’Hare Airport and the corner of Randolph and State streets in the Chicago Loop.

Manolis Alpogianis said he and his brother have not yet planned a specific location for the restaurant, but they identified DeKalb as an area to expand because of the city’s demographics.

“We found out that people who eat at our restaurants are typically aged 25 to 55, evenly split between male and female; they eat out two to four times per week and have medium to high income,” he said.

Manolis Alpogianis said they are looking to hire a local franchise owner to operate the restaurant, and they

hope to open in DeKalb within the next year and a half to two years.

“DeKalb seems to be a natural fit,” he said. “It’s a nicely populated area.”

America’s Dog and Burger is planning to franchise 30 locations through Southern Wisconsin, the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana.

Future locations will feature a new layout with community picnic-style benches and tables based on the road trip that inspired the Alpogianis brothers to start America’s Dog and Burger, according to a company press release.

The main menu features burgers, hot dogs, sausages, chicken sandwiches, salad and Italian beef. Manolis Alpogianis said the restaurant uses fresh meat and quality ingredients, adding to the appeal of classics such as the Chicago-style hot dog and Maxwell Street Polish sausage.

What’s comes next now that the election is over?

As the local election season wrapped up with the April 4 election, it gets you thinking about what’s next.

The season was full of forums to learn about the candidates and what their plans are for the community going forward. It was great to see a ballot that was full of contested races to allow us the choice to vote for the candidates that we feel will be best for their particular role.

For those elected, congratulations on being willing to serve the people and having the voters put their confidence in you. Now it’s time to begin working on what was presented within the position that you now hold (or continue to hold).

With that being said, what about those who were willing to step up to a public office and did not get elected?

First, I would like to thank you for your willingness to serve. As most said either during the campaign or after the results were presented, they still plan to play an active role in moving the community forward. That is equally as important to help us accomplish the goals discussed. This doesn’t just refer to candidates but also the volunteers and supporters.

The opportunities ahead of us to make change happen are there, but we all have to play a part in that process.

There is room for everyone to be a part of making the community better and I hope that each of you find that fit. Being a positive contributor to the community is the best way to make a difference. I encourage everyone to find your way to do that and help those in elected office to accomplish the goals that you elected them to accomplish.

A bright idea for ‘skinny budget’ It would be hard to write a blueprint for federal discretionary spending and not have it include a single worthy idea. Case in point: President Donald Trump’s “skinny budget” includes a lot of penny-wise, pound-foolish budget-cutting ideas – and a smart expression of support for modernizing the nation’s outmoded system of air-traffic control.

Currently, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) runs civilian air-traffic control in the United States, and, by all accounts, the system is safe. There has not been a single fatal accident involving a scheduled airline flight in the United States since 2009. It could be much better, however, and more efficient.

The problem has been the FAA’s inability to push through a $35.8 billion program, NextGen, whose goal is to move the agency, belatedly, into the age of digital communications and GPS. The difficulties with NextGen, in turn, reflect the FAA’s reliance on multiple streams of funding, including not only dedicated user fees and taxes, but also, in recent years, congressional appropriations.

As most of the airline industry and even the air-traffic controllers’ union now realizes, this vital function is too important to be left to such political and bureaucratic vagaries. It should be transferred to a separate entity, perhaps a government- chartered corporation, with a separate board of directors and the autonomy to deal with technological issues more nimbly, according to the needs of the vast majority of the flying public – not congressional committees and the various interest groups that exercise disproportionate influence there.

Similar spinoffs have taken place in Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom, generally with good results. A new report by the Eno Institute, a bipartisan think tank whose board includes three former secretaries of transportation, proposed creating a government corporation or a nonprofit independent entity funded by direct payments from the system’s users. Key senators are opposed, however, which is why Pennsylvania Rep. Bud Shuster’s version went nowhere during the last FAA reauthorization process. In part, their objections reflect the usual political turf protection; but there are legitimate issues as well, such as the need for a sufficiently lengthy transition period to a new system, and the difficulties – financial and legal – of transferring the FAA’s assets to a new entity. As the experience of other countries shows, however, none of those obstacles is insurmountable. With the latest in a series of short-term FAA reauthorization bills set to expire in September, the time is now for Congress to start good-faith discussions about how to overcome them.

Air-traffic modernization is overdue. And with the White House on board, there may finally be a real chance to make it happen.

You remain the only president to withhold his tax returns from public review since Richard Nixon opened his returns in 1973.

Furthermore, other presidents have made their tax returns public despite undergoing annual audits required of all presidents

while in office.

It is important for us, as a nation, to have your tax information so we can evaluate what – if any – business relationships you may have had that pose potential conflicts of interest, especially connections with Russia, accused of meddling in the 2016 presidential election. We also deserve to know what sorts of tax breaks you have received so that we can better evaluate the tax reform legislation you are developing and what – if any – personal gain or loss you might suffer from that reform.

It is important for you to reveal your tax information because a president needs the public’s confidence and support.

Because of serious questions about your associates’ links to Russian businesses and to Russian officials as well as concerns about your personal stake in tax reform, you are facing skepticism that threatens your ability to get things done. You lost your first attempt to repeal Obamacare. Your tax reform is already under attack. Your public approval ratings are low. A

contributing factor is the cloud of suspicion around you from continuing to withhold your tax information.

We have your 2005 tax return, leaked to a reporter. There were no red flags. But your 2005 return, perhaps deliberately leaked for a political purpose, is not enough to put concerns to rest.

We need more recent returns to properly answer our questions. You do not need to reveal your entire return. Your 1040 form will offer access to your sources of income to help us discover any suspicious business relationships. Your Schedule A will show us your itemized deductions so we can understand which tax breaks affect you personally.

Your opponents are sure to use information from your returns for political grandstanding. But most of us are capable of sifting through the partisan sensationalism to find the issues of national interest.

Release your returns, Mr. President.

Mistrust of Trump threatens rule of law Donald Trump’s unorthodox campaign and unexpected victory have produced a culture of mistrust permeating our politics and threatening to undermine the rule of law. That’s not healthy, whatever you think of Trump or his political opponents.

The partisan mistrust is evident in Senate Democrats’ filibuster of the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch, which seems sure to result in an end to such filibusters, to at least the short-term detriment of the Democratic Party. Apparently, pressure from the party’s base has pushed reluctant senators into this self-defeating course.

Mistrust also is apparent in the decisions of federal judges overturning Trump’s travel ban executive orders.

In two cases, judges made clear that they would uphold similar orders issued by any other president – but they wouldn’t uphold one made by someone who called for a “Muslim ban” at one point in his campaign, even though he withdrew that proposal in favor of “extreme vetting” months before his election.

This, despite the fact that neither the Constitution nor legislation passed by Congress confers rights on foreigners not in the U.S. against religious discrimination.

Policy arguments can be made against a Muslim ban and against Trump’s much more limited executive orders.

Neither the FBI nor the congressional intelligence committees’ investigations have produced evidence of Trump team collusion with Russia. But there’s strong evidence the Obama administration did what Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden has warned against: use intelligence surveillance to discredit political opponents.

In office, Trump has not pursued Russia-friendly policies as Clinton warned he might and Obama officials may have feared.

His relevant appointees – Rex Tillerson, James Mattis, H.R. McMaster and Fiona Hill – have taken a tough line on Russia and Putin. Democrats’ mistrust has, at least so far, proved unjustified. He has behaved more like a conventional Republican than he has some reincarnation of Hitler or Mussolini.

Mistrust that leads to abandonment of the rule of law and misuse of intelligence information is corrosive and invites retaliation in kind.

Maybe it’s time to focus on what the legitimately elected president is doing rather than his more outlandish campaign rhetoric.

Members of Congress are essentially employees of the constituents of that district. In any other job, refusal to communicate with your boss would be grounds for termination.

Kinzinger has not held a town hall since 2012, but he has attended too many fundraisers to count.

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The Kaneland baseball team got a boost from an ingrown toenail.

The Knights’ designated hitter Josh Norman had a physical to enlist in the National Guard prematurely ended because of the minor condition on Monday morning, which allowed him to come back and have a big offensive day in Kaneland’s 8-1 victory over DeKalb in the first Northern Illinois Big 12 East game of the season for each team.

“The guy takes off my sock and says, ‘You got an ingrown toenail here. You can’t have that, so you’ll have to get that fixed and then you can come back and enlist,’ ” Norman said. “I didn’t think I’d be playing because I thought the process would be a lot longer. I got done with everything about 10:40 and I let coach know I’d be able to play in the game and here I am. I guess I had a good day, you could say.”

Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said he originally didn’t think Norman would be available for the game, assuming he would be enlisting in Rosemont all day. Norman ended up hitting 3 for 4 with three RBIs for the Knights in the win over the Barbs.

“He was putting the ball in play and doing his job for us, getting guys in,” Aversa said. “He was a big key for us to win.”

Kaneland leadoff hitter Jack Marshall went 3 for 4 with two runs and Preston Havis added two hits, while the Barbs finished with just three hits as a team. Joshua Pollastrini threw a complete game for the Knights, striking out three and walking two and finished with 97 pitches.

“Anytime you can throw a complete game with the new pitch guidelines and come out with a victory, it’s a good thing,” Aversa said. “Josh gave it his all. He was throwing strikes. He was getting a little off at the end, but we had confidence in him and the defense played real well behind him.”

The game ended on a bizarre note, with the final out being called for the

open in the top of the third, scoring five runs on four hits and two costly DeKalb errors. Luke Calabrese had an RBI single for Kaneland in the inning and Norman followed with a two-run single up the middle.

“We didn’t hit the ball today,” DeKalb coach Dedric Wright said.

“We didn’t hit the ball and we didn’t field the ball. When you score one run, you’re not going to win many games. ...

That third inning we made two crucial errors on fly balls. We needed to track those down.”

By the numbers: DeKalb’s three hits came on singles by Bryce Wheeler, Derek Kyler and Eric Nelson. The Barbs scored their only run of the game when Noah Hallaron hit an RBI sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Kyler. Jarrett Sykes took the loss on the mound for the Barbs, allowing six earned runs on six hits in three innings, while Noah Valin allowed one run in four innings of relief. For Kaneland, Robert Dudzinski added an RBI single in the win.

Beyond the stats: Kaneland pulled off a successful double play in the bottom of the sixth, when Kyler hit a hard ground ball to Kaneland third baseball Calabrese, who threw it to second baseman Joey Brandonisio for the first out and Brandonisio threw it to first baseman Dudzinski for the final out.

They said it: “I’m like, ‘This is what’s going to cost me from doing this?’ I looked at the doctor and was like, ‘I really need to get this addressed? Like, seriously?’ ” Norman said. “He’s like, ‘Yeah, because if this gets infected during boot camp, you can’t go.’ All right. Doctor’s orders, I guess.”

The Kaneland grad was 3 for 4 with a steal in Game 1 and 3 for 4 with two runs, an RBI and two steals in Game 2.

Zick leads the Big East with 25 steals.

She’s only been thrown out twice. She’s also fourth in the league with 26 runs.

On the season, Zick has a .330 batting average and a .425 on-base percentage. St. John’s (18-11, 6-1 Big East) has won eight games in a row.

• • • Freshman Kendyl Strack has started all 34 games for Lewis. The Genoa-Kingston grad was 1 for 2 with a run and a walk in a 3-0 win Saturday against McKendree. On the season, she has a .273 batting average with four doubles, a homer and 13 RBIs. • • • Abby Taylor has played in 16 games for Rock Valley. The freshman has a .189 batting average with seven hits in 37 at-bats. She has a walk and an RBI. The Golden Eagles are 26-2.

• • • While the Carroll baseball team lost, 30-8, to Illinois Wesleyan in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday, Genoa-Kingston grad Jake Langford continued his offensive surge.

Langford was 2 for 5 with a run to add to his .386 batting average. The junior third baseman has a .429 on-base percentage with seven doubles and 14 RBIs.

Cubs honor 2016 championship team by raising banner

bmiles@dailyherald.com CHICAGO – Nothing was going to dampen the spirits of Cubs fans Monday night.

Not a steady rain that poured down during the early evening hours and certainly not a wind that shifted from warm to chilly in an instant.

This was the night the Cubs raised their championship banner, and what’s a little waiting to Cubs fans?

The ceremony got underway close to two hours late, and members of all levels of the organization had their take on what celebrating the 2016 World Series title meant and how the evening – and the banner – might unfurl.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the looks on everyone’s faces as that banner goes up, players and fans alike,” team president Theo Epstein said. “They say all glory is fleeting, and it is. But the flag will fly forever, and that feeling of being part of something bigger than ourselves will last forever, too. To me, that’s what it symbolizes.”

Four new flagpoles behind the center-field bleachers provided a hint that more than just the 2016 banner would be hoisted.

Finally, Anthony Rizzo led his teammates as they put up the 2016 world championship banner. Fireworks shot out from behind the videoboards, and the ceremony culminated with team owners Laura, Tom and Todd Ricketts throwing out ceremonial first pitches.

The cheers were thunderous.

“It’s being part of something,” manager Joe Maddon said. “It’s being part

of something bigger than you. That’s the really impressive part about it. Of course winning a World Series and winning a World Series in Chicago with the Cubs for the first time in a long time and the fan base, the tradition, the city itself, the organization, it’s just different.”

Pressed as to why it’s different, Maddon explained it from the point of view of a relative newcomer. He arrived on the scene in the offseason of 2014-15.

“I’ve been to every ballpark in the big leagues now, and there are some really

good ones,” he said. “Great fan bases, wonderful traditions. But there is just something different about this place.

Maybe it’s just because the ballpark is in a neighborhood. It has something to do with it. I know Fenway is kind of like that, but not quite like this.

“Maybe the long-term suffering of the group’s not having won in so many years. There’s an intellectualism about this place also that I think is different.

There’s a passion about it. It really runs the gamut of all the spectrums of groups that are following this team and the reasons why. I didn’t know that. I did not know that before I got here.”

The players shared their experiences, too. World Series MVP Ben Zobrist won the 2015 championship with the Kansas City Royals, but doing it with the Cubs resonated differently.

“Recently, I had a guy basically cry on my shoulder, an officer from the city here,” Zobrist said, relating how he ran into the man in St. Louis. “To see how emotional it makes people and how much it means to them that we were able to win, I think all the stories people share about their families, that they’ve experienced the Cubs with their families over all the years, they’ve lost loved ones that didn’t get a chance to see it, it just reminds them of their loved ones.

Those are the stories that touch the heart the most.”

North Central piled it on at the Wheaton College Invitational.

Ranked second in NCAA Division III men’s track and field, the Cardinals won eight of the 20 events and cruised to a first-place finish Saturday with 195.5 team points. The University of Chicago was second with 136 points and fourth-ranked Aurora University third with 122.50.

The Cardinals’ roster is loaded with former Next Level coverage area prep standouts.

Kaneland grad Dylan Kuipers was second in pole vault as the junior from Elburn cleared 15 feet. Freshman Izaiah Webb from DeKalb won the triple jump with a distance of 45 feet, 1½ inches.

Cornerback Porter released

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com The Bears released veteran cornerback Tracy Porter on Monday, one month after signing cornerbacks Prince Amukamara and Marcus Cooper, and 13 months after signing Porter to a three-year extension.

Porter, who turns 31 in August, played in 30 games the past two seasons with the Bears, often playing through injuries. In 2015 he was the most productive player on defense, with 12 passes defensed and a crucial interception against the Packers on Thanksgiving.

Last season, Porter played in every game and had 48 tackles, nine passes

defensed and two interceptions. He was instrumental in helping a young cornerbacks group.

However, Porter had no more guaranteed money left on his contract. Cooper and Amukamara were signed to starter’s deals, and the Bears have several other corners on the roster with starting experience: Cre’von LeBlanc, Bryce Callahan, Kyle Fuller, Johnthan Banks and B.W. Webb. They could also use an early draft pick at corner, a deep position in the draft.

Porter has 13 career interceptions and has played for the Saints, Broncos, Raiders and Washington in his career. He famously had a pick-six on Peyton Manning to help clinch a Super Bowl win for the Saints.

SPORTS BRIEFS AP sources: Fisher retiring as San Diego State basketball coach

SAN DIEGO – Steve Fisher is retiring from a basketball coaching career that includes a national championship at Michigan, directing the Fab Five and then turning San Diego State from a laughingstock into a West Coast power.

Two people with knowledge of the situation said Monday that Fisher, 72, is retiring after 18 seasons at SDSU. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because Fisher’s decision hasn’t been announced by the school.

U.S. Soccer: Trump encouraging a World Cup with Mexico, Canada

The United States launched its bid to co-host the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada on Monday after gaining the support of President Donald Trump.

The U.S. would dominate by staging 60 games, including all from the quarterfinals on.

Mexico and Canada would have to settle for 10 games each. As a consolation, Mexico wants the opener at its 87,000-capacity Azteca Stadium.

Rookies ready for playoffs

mlazerus@suntimes.com Nick Schmaltz has never faced a defensive-zone draw in the second overtime of a Stanley Cup playoff game. He’s never made a daring pass through traffic that could lead to the game-winning goal or the game-losing turnover in a potential series clincher. He’s never had the puck on his stick and the Stanley Cup on the line.

But he knows a thing or two about playing – and winning – under pressure.

A year ago this week, Schmaltz scored the game-winning goal with 56.8 seconds left in the NCAA national semifinal, sweeping in a rebound and propelling North Dakota to an eventual national championship. It’s not the Stanley Cup playoffs. But it’s not nothing, either.

“It helps, just knowing that you can make those plays when you need to,” Schmaltz said. “When crunch time comes around, you’re not nervous to make a play. I think I’ll be ready and not too nervous.”

He’d better be. The Hawks are among the most tested teams in the league, with

a staggering 1,462 career playoff games among the roster.

But they won’t go anywhere this postseason without contributions from the four rookies in the lineup – Schmaltz on the top line, Ryan Hartman on the third line, and John Hayden and Tanner Kero likely on the fourth line.

And there’s no dipping a toe in the water when it comes to the playoffs; you get thrown right in to the deep end.

There’s nothing quite like the pressure and intensity of the Stanley Cup playoffs, but the Hawks’ rookies have been in big games before.

Schmaltz played in the Frozen Four in each of his two seasons at North Dakota, and twice played in the World Juniors, posting eight points in seven games in a bronze-medal effort last season.

Hartman had two goals and two assists in five games during the 2014 World Juniors, and played 11 AHL playoff games in Rockford. Kero played in nine playoff games in Rockford, and had a goal and nine shots on goal in his one NCAA tournament game. Hayden played in the NCAA tournament after his sophomore and junior seasons at Yale.

Now, with one game remaining in the regular season, the Bulls have to do the same.

Monday night’s win – which represented the Bulls’ biggest margin victory of the season – was a step in the right direction.

The Bulls, still playing without starting point guard Rajon Rondo, jumped on the Magic early and never took their foot off the gas.

Now, with one game to determine whether they will control their own destiny and clinch a postseason berth with a win or allow the actions of others to determine whether the season ends Wednesday, the Bulls don’t have any other choice but to follow Monday night’s effort with a similar effort.

“When you come into the season, your goal is to make the playoffs,” Wade said. “That’s what our goal has continued to be through it all whether we were playing well, playing bad, whatever the heck was going on. At the end of the day, you want to put yourself in position to make the playoffs.

“Once you do that, a whole other season starts.”

CHICAGO – As Fred Hoiberg began to empty his bench midway through the fourth quarter, the only uncertainly that remained, at least as far as the Bulls were concerned, was playing out 1,300 miles to the south.

From the outset Monday night, the Bulls had overwhelmed the visiting Orlando Magic which, unlike the Bulls, entered the penultimate game of the regular season with nothing to play for.

24 Readers’ curiosity inspires column topics Dear Readers: When we first began writing this column, we wondered how we would know if we were reaching anyone.

The answer came almost immediately, via your letters, all of which are read.

It has been heartwarming to learn we have helped many of you, delightful to discover how studious and curious you are about science and medicine, and humbling to have you engage us at such a personal level about your health issues and your lives.

We quickly learned that some of our columns, in which we answer a specific question or discuss a particular topic, give rise to a host of new questions. Many of these can and will be answered in future columns.

Some of the letters we receive are, unfortunately, so personal and specific we are unable to address them. But even in these letters we often find a more universal question that can be useful to discuss in the future.

So far, the columns about veganism, shingles, postpartum depression, vitamin B12 and toenail fungus have sparked the liveliest discussions.

Regarding the column about the specific nutritional needs of vegans, we received appreciative notes from families who are considering the move to a vegan diet. We also were taken to task for not congratulating the potential vegans who wrote to us for advice regarding their new direction.

The truth is, we are deeply appreciative of how engaged you, the readers, are in living the healthiest lifestyle possible.

We celebrate every query that reveals an interest in a better life. We’re thrilled when we can help and do our best to offer the most useful, well-rounded explanations and information.

Finally, the other category of letter we get is from individuals sharing some interesting and surprising solutions to the problems many of us face. This one came from a 94-year-old gentleman who was diagnosed with sleep apnea, which occurs only when he sleeps on his back. How to assure you don’t roll over onto your back once you’re asleep? His family doctor had an ingenious solution: “As suggested by my doctor, my wife sewed a pocket on the back of my pajamas to hold an everyday tennis ball. It was easily removable for washing. Since then, I have slept very comfortably, but only on one side or the other. And no longer do I snore.”

Dear Abby: A DEAR ABBY few years ago, I met a wonderful Jeanne person. I spent Phillips roughly three months with him in a budding relationship. My issue is one night he said those three little words, and I panicked and disappeared from his life. I know it was a horrible and cowardly thing to do. I just didn’t know how to handle it other than ask him why and saying, “You can’t mean me, right?”

I have felt horrible that I vanished without any explanation and most likely hurt him. I really would like to apologize for my actions and immaturity. He didn’t deserve that type of treatment. I recently found his address and wonder if it would be all right to send an apology, or if it would be best not to open potential wounds. – Disappeared In Illinois Dear Disappeared: Because you feel an apology and an explanation are in order, I see no harm in offering them. However, before you do, think this through. Is there more to this than a guilty conscience? Because years have passed, you both may be at different places in your lives than you were then. One or both of you may be married or involved with others. So before you do this, be absolutely sure not only of your motivations, but also of your expectations.

Dear Abby: I recently have had discussions with friends and family about the best way to express concern for someone who is facing major surgery. Some say they’d prefer hearing about others who have undergone similar procedures successfully. (But might that set expectations that can’t be met, since not all procedures and physical circumstances are the same?) Or is it best to keep comments general?

For example: “You will be in my thoughts/ prayers/heart,” or “I hope it goes even better than you hope it will.” What’s the most helpful way to express concern? – Sensitive Subject Dear S.S.: Unless the surgery is for something life-threatening – in which case the thoughts, prayers and heart are necessary – keep the message upbeat and positive. Example: “Is there anything I can do for you while you’re recuperating?” And if the answer is no, say, “I’ll give you a call in a couple of days to see how you’re doing, and we’ll visit when you’re up for company.”

Common wisdom recommends making the stronger hand of a partnership the declarer. But that does not work all of the time. In today’s deal, the second consecutive sixheart contract my wife and I bid at bridgebase.com last month, it would have been better if North were the declarer. But that seems impossible in a normal sequence.

In our auction, two diamonds was natural and game-forcing. Then, once we had agreed hearts at the three-level, a drawback of two-overone arose: Neither player knew partner’s strength, except that each had opening values. We use a variation of an idea that was originally proposed, I believe, by Eric Rodwell. With a minimum, South would have raised to four hearts. With middling strength, she would have bid an artificial three no-trump: a semi-serious slam-try. Her actual three-spade control-bid was a serious slam-try.

After I control-bid four clubs, East doubled to ask for a club lead. This might have given my partner pause, but she drove into six hearts.

West led the club eight. Declarer needed hearts 3-2 and West with the diamond ace. Also, just in case spades were 5-0, after winning with the club ace and cashing the heart ace-king, South played a spade to the king.

She then drew the last trump, ran the spades (discarding two clubs and a diamond from the board) and led the diamond jack.

Declarer took five spades, three hearts, one diamond, one club, a diamond ruff in her hand and a club ruff on the board.
