Mom goes to great lengths in search POLL YESTERDAY’S

Being a mother puts you into different frames of mind. Sometimes you are elated, sad, mad or just plain insane.

All of these feelings are because of the fact that we have a ton of things on our plate.

So when I started flipping out about losing my mind, I literally thought it was happening.

Here’s why: Within a week I managed to misplace two important items. One happened to be one of Hannah Jo’s birthday gifts. It was a $25 Amazon gift card. This made me feel very bad. The other was $30 in Kohl’s cash, which I earned from spending money on my Kohl’s credit card.

Don’t even try to calculate how much I bought to earn that much. The real calculation is that all in all it was like losing $55.

I searched high and low for these two things. In hopes of finding them, I ruffled through a pile of bills, cleaned out a junk drawer and emptied out my purse. Truthfully, I even rummaged through the garbage. It was super gross.

I needed to find them in order to prove to myself that I wasn’t crazy.

What in the world happened to it? It didn’t grow legs and walk away. My husband was half irritated about me mulling over the situation and half laughing at me. Seriously, though – where did they go?

til my husband yelled for me in the shower.

He said, “Honey, you gotta peak your head out. I have something to show you.”

So I did. Standing there in his hands were the two things I was convinced were lost forever. I screeched in delight and then of course asked, “Where did you find them?”

Apparently, Hannah Jo had hid them in her daddy’s nightstand. Apparently, playing cashier at a busy grocery store was taken very seriously.

She stashed a bunch of loose change, various business cards along with her Magic Kingdom Fast Pass. Hannah Jo collected a bunch of goodies for her store.

Anyway, I was so happy that my husband found the lost items. However, I was more relieved to know that I hadn’t lost my mind just yet.

HONOLULU – Sean Smith and his husband paid more than $20,000 for a fertility procedure when they decided to have a child using a surrogate mother. They did not know at the time that if they were a heterosexual couple, they might have saved that money.

Now, Smith and other members of Hawaii’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community are lobbying for equal access to the financial help married, heterosexual couples enjoy under state law.

They are pushing legislation that would require insurance companies to cover in vitro fertilization for more couples, including making Hawaii the first state to require the coverage for surrogates, which would help male same-sex couples

who must use a surrogate.

“Now that marriage equality is the law of the land and is accepted, now let’s turn to family building, and let’s figure out how we fix all these inequities that exist,” said Barbara Collura, president and CEO of Resolve, a national organization that advocates for access to fertility treatments.

Hawaii is one of eight states that require insurance companies to cover in vitro fertilization, a costly procedure where a doctor retrieves eggs from a woman, combines them with sperm from a man and then implants an embryo into a woman’s uterus. But Hawaii’s mandate applies only to married heterosexual couples because it covers the medical intervention only if a woman uses sperm from her spouse, leaving the LGBT community and single women behind.

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Cheryll Severson of DeKalb visits Carter’s Cottage Interiors, a home décor and furniture shop in downtown DeKalb, every couple of months and was saddened to learn that the store would be closing in June after six years in business.

“I think it’s the nicest store around.

And you may not always buy something from here, but you can always find something unique,” Severson said. “The days of the little boutiques are gone.”

Owner Christie Carter made the announcement last week and said the decision was not motivated by any negative experiences or poor business in the community, but that an opportunity for change presented itself.

“I feel it is salient for our community and the shop’s customers to understand Carter’s Cottage is thriving, and my time in downtown DeKalb has been phenomenal,” Carter said. “The decision to close came from a new opportunity and a new dream for me to grow.”

She did not say what or where her new opportunity would be.

RaeAnne Rhule, a store employee for four years, said she visits the store as a customer 10 times a month and was very disappointed in the store’s closing as a customer, but respected Carter’s future endeavors.

“Christie just brings in a lot of unique items, and I just love the home décor,” Rhule said. “I’m happy for Christie, but selfishly, I’m a little sad because I love the store. It will be weird that it won’t be here in a couple of months.”

The store has participated in numerous community events hosted by local shop owners to extend its outreach, including the Spring and Fall Open Houses, sidewalk sales and sneak peeks during the holidays.

Carter said these types of events allow area businesses to draw their customers toward her store. She added that this is helpful for downtown businesses that are not along Lincoln

“People may not see that everyone wants everyone else to succeed, which is priceless for a local business owner,” Carter said. “The more businesses that are involved with cross-promotion, the more diverse our customer base will be.”

In a statement posted on the store’s website, Carter praised her customers for their continued support.

“What I feel so very important for you to understand is you have been my joy all along,” Carter said in the statement. “You have given me so

much happiness sharing your life and you have given me a reason to be proud of who I am and what I have created so please remember Carter’s Cottage with joy and smiles.”

Carter added that running a successful business for six years required her to conquer a fear of failure.

“Any time you start a new business, it’s really about reaching out to the community and gaining the community’s trust,” Carter said. “To run a successful business and one that reaches out to a lot of people, it was about getting over that fear of failure and believing I can do something that will last longer than a year.”

The store’s closing sale will begin on April 15.

“It is my hope the community continues to support us during our closing,” Carter said. “New items are still trickling in, and there are several new pieces of furniture that will make their way to the shop in the next few weeks.”

Carter’s Cottage no longer will be accepting checks or honoring its previous return policies. All sales will be final, and gift certificates will be unavailable.

Carter said that all additional closing announcements will be made on the store’s Facebook page.

Family Service Agency honors volunteers

news@daily-chronicle.com Debra Henderson has benefited from many services provided by DeKalb County agencies, and so she said it feels good for her and her family to give back by volunteering at the Country Store, a resale shop that donates all of its proceeds to the Family Service Agency’s senior services.

In honor of Henderson and her fellow Country Store volunteers, the agency treated them to brunch on Saturday at the Family Service Agency’s DeKalb location.

“The Family Service Agency is a great cause. Everyone there is so nice and so helpful. They go out of their way to help others,” said Henderson, a DeKalb resident. “I’ve met some wonderful ladies [by volunteering], and the Country Store has so many nice, quality items. The store is awesome.”

Henderson is one of about 75 community members who volunteer at the Country Store, which helps to support Club 55, the Family Service Agency’s program for senior citizens.

Club 55 has locations in Sycamore, DeKalb, Malta and Genoa, and is open to anyone older than age 55.

The free drop-in sites offer activities such as tai chi, yoga, art groups, creative writing groups and a history club, among others – all supported in part by proceeds from Country Store sales.

The store donates an average of $40,000 a year to Club 55.

Diana King, program manager for Family Service Agency’s senior services, said the brunch is just a small way to show the agency’s appreciation for all the volunteers’ hard work, which helps area seniors live healthi-

“This is a way for us to show our gratitude for them and our way of saying ‘thank you,’ ” King said. “Our program not only promotes physical wellness, but also mental wellness for seniors. Studies show that isolation is devastating to health, so we give them a safe place to be with their peers.”

David Miller, executive director of the Family Service Agency, said keeping seniors independent also is more economical for them, in addition to the physical and social benefits.

“Isolation among seniors is a big issue. We don’t want them home alone watching TV,” he said. “We provide a social setting that helps make for a better quality of life.”

The Country Store, located at 659 E. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb, accepts donations of gently used clothing, books and other small household goods. DeKalb resident and store volunteer Jan Fitzhenry said she encour-

ages all her friends and family to shop there because of the high-quality inventory.

“There are wonderful things there, and it’s nice because all the money stays in DeKalb,” she said. “And we’re able to donate an incredible amount [to Club 55].”

Pat Cardinali of DeKalb not only volunteers at the store but also is a frequent customer. She said she buys clothes and gifts at reasonable prices.

“The things we don’t sell are donated to other nonprofit groups or to a church mission in Chicago,” she said.

Volunteer Beau Anderson of DeKalb said the Country Store is “the coolest” fundraising project he’s ever seen, which is why he got involved four years ago.

“All these donated items get a new use, and this is a great use of my time now that I’m retired,” he said. “Club 55 gets people together and engages

them in new activities.”

Penny Rosenow said she loves coming to the annual brunch, which is held every April during Volunteer Appreciation Month, because she’s able to visit with other volunteers who she doesn’t often get to socialize with.

“The store is a win-win-win,” she said. “It’s a good place for people to bring their items, our prices are low so customers get great deals, and we all have fun volunteering there. It also helps the community.”

Nancy Mecklenburg has been volunteering as schedule coordinator for many years, and she said the amount of donations has grown significantly. She said she “thoroughly enjoys” helping the Country Store.

“This is a big family to me, as well as a great cause,” she said. “Everyone is so cooperative and works well together. It’s also great because we donate all the items that we can’t use to other nonprofit groups.”

Kay Billings agreed that the recycling aspect of the Country Store really appeals to her, which is one reason she’s been a volunteer for seven years.

“The donations are purchased by people who can reuse them,” she said. “And I feel like I’m helping seniors, so I plan to continue volunteering.”

Jackie Marshall said that the Country Store helped her meet new people when she first moved to DeKalb County more than 10 years ago, and she encourages new residents to get involved.

“When you’re older, it’s harder to make friends, and there’s a lot of camaraderie there. Once you start volunteering, you don’t ever want to stop,” she said.

CAROLE PEARSON Born: December 10, 1944 Died: April 6, 2017

Carole Pearson, 72, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Thursday, April 6, 2017, at home surrounded by her family and friends.

Carole was born in DeKalb on December 10, 1944, to Glenn and Delia (Sauter) Cutts. Carole married Delbert “Andy” Anderson on September 2, 1967. Andy passed away very early in their marriage and just 6 weeks after her father. However, Carole looked at the positive, saying that the bond between her and her mother, both widows now, only became closer. It wasn’t long before Carole was swept off her feet by Dean, who doted on her. They were united in marriage on November 25, 1970. Together they had two daughters, Nikki and Traca, both of DeKalb.

They were married just shy of 45 years when Dean passed away on October 12, 2015. She was never the same without him.

Carole was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in DeKalb. Although she was no longer able to attend, she rarely missed a Sunday morning Mass for the shut-ins, with introductions from “Peter Popoff.” Carole, being a lifelong resident of DeKalb, had many friends. Graduating from DeKalb High School in 1963, she kept in touch with many of the ladies she went to school with. After graduation, she attended beauty school in Chicago, taking the train daily to attend. However, once she became a mother, doing hair was a thing of the past.

The only ones blessed to get a perm from her after that point were her daughters.

Carole loved when people came to visit, she loved to visit people, and she never turned down a trip to Dairy Queen. After teasing her for many years to “get her [expletive] together,” she finally did. Although she will be missed dearly, she was reunited with the loves of her life.

Carole is survived by her daughters, Nikki (Keith) Newsom and Traca (Al) Crowley, both of DeKalb; granddaughter, Hailey Newsom; brothers, John (Anita) Cutts, Thom (Deb) Cutts; sister, Chris (Phil) Nelson; adopted daughters, Amanda Hawbaker, Dawn Lawton; and a plethora of friends and family.

Memorial services will be held Wednes-

day, April 12, at 7:00 p.m., at Finch Funeral Home with Pastor Chris Navurskis from Immanuel Lutheran Church Hinckley, IL. She married Marshall Tindall in Denver, CO, on October 9, 1954.

She was a retired assistant librarian for the Kirkland Library and longtime secretary for the South Grove Cemetery. Eleanor was a member of First United Methodist Church in Kirkland.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Tindall; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

STATE Illinois moves to rein in property confiscation laws

SPRINGFIELD – Kara Bland’s 2010 Chevy Malibu still had temporary plates when police seized it for a crime she did not commit. She loaned it to the father of her daughter, who was arrested after picking up someone who had marijuana on him.

For six weeks, Bland took her 6-year-old daughter to school on a Chicago city bus and relatives helped her run errands before a judge released the car on bond. It took nine months to officially regain ownership and cost her $1,000.

“They intentionally try to make this process as difficult and confusing as they can ... so that people will eventually give up,” she said.

Bland, 24, was a victim of a contentious practice that allows law enforcement to seize vehicles, cash and other property thought to be connected to a crime, and to profit from it. The plight of innocents whose property is seized has helped fuel a flurry of legal changes throughout the country that seek to limit such police powers.

Since 2014, 19 states and the District of Columbia have altered some aspect of their forfeiture laws. Twelve states now require a criminal conviction to formal-

Advocates file complaint in disabilities consent decree

CHICAGO – Attorneys have filed a federal complaint alleging that the state of Illinois is not fulfilling its commitment to fund disability services as required by a 2011 consent decree, saying that a refusal to increase reimbursement to providers has caused a dramatic deterioration in the care of those with developmental disabilities.

The Illinois State Police declined to discuss specifics, but like the police chiefs, a spokesman said the agency is working with the proposal’s sponsors to ensure it would protect innocent property owners but not hamstring officers’ ability to deter criminal activity.

The university receives nearly $800 million in research funding from the federal government. President Donald Trump’s administration has proposed cuts to student financial aid and other programs.

Exhibit to highlight Aurora’s involvement in World War I

AURORA – A new exhibit in downtown Aurora will honor the city’s involvement in World War I. The Beacon-News reported that local historians are pulling together more than 80 artifacts for an exhibit that will open Memorial Day. Visitors also will be able to enter an 18foot reproduction of a trench.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump’s national security adviser on Sunday left open the possibility of additional U.S. military action against Syria after last week’s missile strike but indicated that the U.S. was not seeking to act unilaterally to oust Syrian President Bashar Assad.

In his first televised interview, H.R. McMaster pointed to dual U.S. goals of defeating the Islamic State group and removing Assad. But he suggested that Trump was seeking a global political response for regime change from U.S. allies as well as Russia, which he said needed to re-evaluate its support of Syria.

BEIRUT – Russia and Iran renewed their support for the Syrian government in a flurry of calls Sunday, saying last week’s U.S. missile strike violated Syrian sovereignty but failed to boost the morale of “terror groups” in Syria.

In a phone call with Syrian President Bashar Assad, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called the strike Friday a “blatant violation” of Syrian sovereignty, Syrian state media reported. Assad accused the U.S. of trying to boost the morale of “terror groups” in Syria.

The government refers to all those fighting against it as terrorists.

The Kremlin said in a statement Rouhani also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone.

“Both sides noted the inadmissibility of aggressive U.S. actions against a sovereign state in violation of international law,” the statement said. “Vladimir Putin and Hasan Rouhani spoke in favor of an objective, unbiased investigation of all the circumstances of the chemical weapons incident on April 4 in the Syrian province of Idlib.”

Sequels are always worse The last time the United States held a constitutional convention was in 1787. That one turned out pretty well. The next one could have far more doleful results. And the nation is much closer to convening such a convention than many people realize.

It would take the votes of 34 state legislatures to call a constitutional convention to order. A majority of legislatures already have voted to do so. Such calls remain valid indefinitely - until 34 states have joined in a particular cause or the states rescind their appeals. Therefore we congratulate Maryland’s House of Delegates, which on Tuesday rescinded its call for a federal constitutional convention decades after approving it. Same to Nevada’s Senate, which voted, also Tuesday, to rescind a resolution in that state.

But a number of states have recently passed or are close to passing measures calling for a convention.

The possibility mostly was dormant from the 1980s until a few years ago, when some blue states began calling for a convention to undo the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling and conservative groups began pressing red-state legislatures to pass convention resolutions on a variety of pet causes, including a balanced-budget amendment. Though each state might have a single issue in mind, once a convention is convened its delegates would not be bound to any particular issue. Gun control could be banned entirely - or its constitutional limits loosened; gay marriage could be eliminated – or the Equal Rights Amendment could be passed. Though it seems unlikely the required three-fourths of states would approve major changes drawn up at a runaway convention, it is already amazing that so many states have taken the initial step of calling for one.

It is not even certain that three-fourths of the states would have to approve the convention’s work for it to become the law of the land, as the Constitution currently prescribes. The 1787 constitutional convention ditched preexisting ratification rules; who is to say a 2018 convention could not? In fact, nearly everything about this powerful process would be uncertain. Convention rules, which would be written ad hoc, could be manipulated to favor one party, region or interest group over another.

Minority protections, so central to the Constitution’s guarantees, could be trampled upon. Sparsely populated states could impose their will on the majority of Americans who live in densely populated ones.

Many of us can point to one constitutional provision or another that we believe we could improve upon if given a chance. But a convention could do great damage to a charter that, on balance, has worked pretty well for a pretty long time. To take such a risk on behalf of a stupendously unworthy cause such as a balanced-budget amendment would be foolhardy in the extreme.

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker It’s an alarming turn of events. President Donald Trump’s Justice Department now is poised to turn the agency’s mission on its head. Instead of protecting those citizens who have endured violence at the hands of overzealous and, yes, racist police officers, the department will protect the police officers, allowing them to continue their brutality unchecked. In other words, the Department of Justice will not be standing up for justice.

If Sessions cared about facts, he would have read the reports in their entirety. He would have noted that the investigations were thorough and evenhanded. (If the Chicago report was largely anecdotal, that’s because Chicago police were notoriously deficient in documenting their interactions with residents.) In Ferguson, for example, Barack Obama’s Justice Department exonerated officer Darren Wilson, who shot 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Brown’s shooting, although ap-

parently justified, helped to launch a painful national conversation about the relationship between law enforcement and citizens of color. That conversation was long overdue.

Despite the considerable racial progress since the civil rights movement – progress capped by the election of a black president – the criminal justice system remains a last bastion of explicit racism, starting with the brutality many rank-and-file officers show toward black and brown citizens. With the growing popularity of cellphones, there now is ample evidence of that brutality.

But there are millions of white citizens who don’t want to be reminded of the racism that continues to thrive, unchecked, in certain sectors of society.

They don’t want to grapple with clear evidence of law enforcement agents who gun down unarmed black men offering no resistance. They don’t want to hear that the complaints offered by protest groups such as Black Lives Matter are justified.

Enter Trump, who ran a campaign that conjured up a parallel/nonexistent universe of cities overrun by violent thugs and police agencies handicapped by a politically correct federal government. In Trump’s telling, violent crime is

running rampant because police officers can no longer do their jobs.

As he put it in his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention: “Our convention occurs at a moment of crisis for our nation. ... The attacks on our police, and the terrorism in our cities, threaten our very way of life. ... The crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon come to an end.”

As many observers pointed out, Trump’s America was created out of “alternative facts” – actually a hodgepodge of propaganda, exaggeration and outright lies. While the murder rate is up slightly in a few cities, crime overall is still trending downward, as it has for the past two decades. The violent crime rate peaked in the 1990s and is nowhere near that historic high now.

But creating fear among his constituents serves Trump well. While he is actively working against their economic interests, he keeps them distracted by ginning up their fear of those whose skin is darker and whose ritual of worship is different. It’s a shame that his supporters fall for that.

Trade deficit with China is a problem – but not for reason Trump thinks

There are many potential sources of conflict between the world’s two largest economies. But President Donald Trump has forecast that his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping would be a “very difficult one” for a particular reason: Trade deficits.

Trump has long has been focused on the trade deficit, the excess of imports over exports, as a sign of failing U.S. competitiveness abroad. In the past, he has proposed a variety of trade-related fixes, including protective measures like taxes on foreign imports.

But that strategy is unlikely to lessen the U.S. trade deficit with China, and it could actually backfire, economist Michael Pettis says. Pettis, a professor at Peking University and a senior fellow at the Carnegie Institution who is one of the leading voices about global imbalances in the flows of trade and capital, says that the U.S. trade deficit is a problem – but not for the reasons

that Trump, Bernie Sanders and other critics seem to think. The key, Pettis says, is that the trade deficit is due to a deeper problem, which is imbalances in the flow of international investment.

In his view, this is an issue that China could fix, but which the United States is ultimately powerless to do much about.

I spoke with Pettis on April 5 about Xi’s visit and the debate over the trade balance. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Ana Swanson: We’ve seen varying opinions on the trade deficit of late. The Trump administration has emphasized that bilateral trade deficits are bad for the U.S. But there are many other economists who say bilateral trade deficits aren’t a good metric to focus on.

Michael Pettis: They’re not.

Swanson: So is the U.S. trade deficit with China something to be concerned about?

Pettis: Yes. The problem is that the

debate over whether the deficit is a

good or bad thing is pretty sterile. The answer, as it is in most questions in economics, is maybe. It depends on the underlying conditions. There are times when running a trade deficit is positive for growth, and there are times it is negative.

It is a bad thing for the U.S. currently. The Trump administration is the first that has put the trade deficit at the center of its policies, but complaints about trade have existed for a while and they are legitimate. The problem is they are being addressed the wrong way.

That’s because people are looking at flows in trade, when the cause is really flows in capital.

The thing you have to remember is the balance of payments [the total value of payments into and out of a country] by definition balances to zero. So if you run a trade surplus, which means you export more than you import, like China does, you must also run a capital account deficit, which means more money leaves your country than comes in. In that case, money is coming in through

the trade account and leaving through the capital account. Of course, the opposite is also true. If you run a trade deficit, like the U.S. does, money leaves through the trade account and comes back in through the capital account. If you run a surplus on one account you must run a deficit on the other.

If you are a developing country, and you have insufficient savings to fund your investment needs, then you want to run a trade deficit and bring in foreign capital. The U.S. in the 19th century ran a trade deficit, which it needed to do, because as a developing country it needed huge infrastructure spending, and American savings were too low to finance it.

In that case, the U.S. trade deficit was positive for growth, because it meant English capital was coming into the U.S. And that meant American investment could expand without significantly cutting into American consumption.

Of course, when you have high investment and high consumption, you’re going to have a trade deficit.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions doesn’t know much about how the police in Ferguson, Missouri, treat black citizens.

He didn’t bother to read the Justice Department report that found that Ferguson’s municipal government has historically acted as if black residents were trespassers, to be rousted and fined for petty offenses and jailed if they couldn’t pay up. Sessions only read a summary of the report, he told reporters in February.

He didn’t read the Justice Department’s report on the Chicago Police Department, either, which cited frequent use of excessive force, largely aimed at black and brown citizens. The report also noted that police supervisors rarely challenged officers who meted out the abuse. Sessions dismissed the findings as not “scientifically based,” even though, again, he only read the summary.

Yet the attorney general knows enough to believe that law enforcement officials in Ferguson, Chicago and Baltimore are the ones being mistreated.

He seems poised to overturn several agreements negotiated by the Obama administration – agreements that mandated systemic changes in local police departments with a history of abusive conduct.

Shively calmer as starting center

Scharping, Steckler also returning for NIU’s offensive line

After taking over as the starting center for the Northern Illinois football team last year as a sophomore, Shively initially struggled with allowing himself to get too hyped up during the game. Now a junior and entering the spring as the prospective second-year starter in the middle of the offensive line, Shively said his approach to the game has been calmer.

“Honestly, the pace of the game was different,” Shively said when asked about what he didn’t expect after taking over as the starting center. “Practice is a little different. Practice is a little faster, and once I got in the games, it was hard for me to slow down. It sounds backwards, but it was hard for me to slow down because I was so ready to go and so hyped up. I had some time to chill out and focus on my calls.

That was the biggest difference.”

After playing seven games as a redshirt freshman in 2015 behind fouryear starter Andrew Ness, Shively took over the starting job and played in all 12 games. He was a part of a line that provided the blocking for a running game that averaged a conference-best 266.4 yards during Mid-American Conference games and allowed only three sacks in eight conference games – also the best in the MAC. “Comfort making the calls, I think that’s the biggest thing that you see,” NIU coach Rod Carey said about what he’s seen from Shively this spring.

“There’s no panic, where there may have been some last year.”

NIU offensive line coach Joe Tripodi said part of Shively’s growth has been the ability to move on from negative plays and not let them affect the next play.

“Being a first-year starter, you learn that the more you play – O-line is kind of a boring position,” Tripodi said. “It’s really repetitive. The more you play, the more you realize to let things go and play the next play.”

In a sport seen as violent and fast-paced, Shively said there is a serenity to it as well.

“Football isn’t known to be a chill game, but there’s some tranquility in it at times,” Shively said. “It’s you and the field, and it’s you and the defense.

I’m not thinking about anything else.

It’s just one thing and go do that thing.

There’s times when it slows down mentally. Personally, when I’m playing my best football is when I’m locked in and doing one thing. In the end, it’s a game.

I look at it as a game – I take it seriously, but you have to have some fun with it, too.”

Shively is one of three returning starters on the offensive line, with redshirt sophomore Jordan Steckler (6-foot-4, 311 pounds) and junior Max Scharping (6-foot-6, 312 pounds)

anchoring the left side. Scharping, who was named a FWAA Freshman All-American in 2015 and first team allMAC in 2016, moved over to left tackle from right tackle for the Huskies.

“It’s the same plays. It’s just readjusting your feet,” Scharping said. “My hips are a little bit tighter, and it’s just making sure I get enough reps in that I feel comfortable.”

Tripodi cited Scharping’s intelligence for his ability to handle the mental challenge of moving positions and that “everything’s really come easy to him.”

For the offensive line as a whole, Carey said there has been some inconsistencies, saying they aren’t in sync up as a unit yet. Tripodi said there still is competition for playing time on the right side, with Ryan Roberts (6foot-6, 297 pounds) taking most of the first-string reps at right tackle and true freshman Isaac Hawn (6-foot-6, 302

pounds) from St. Charles North battling. At right guard, junior Shane Evans (6-foot-4, 304 pounds), junior Dale Brown (6-foot-3, 307 pounds) and redshirt freshman Brayden Patton (6-foot4, 304 pounds) are among the group competing for the spot.

“I tell the guys it’s like a battle royal. The competition is good,” Tripodi said.

However, the Huskies don’t have a senior offensive lineman on the roster, and with position changes and trying to find a lineup, the consistency problems have been seen from the junior center, too.

“That’s ones, twos and threes,” Shively said. “It’s a different group.

Every year, every spring comes a different group. We’ve taken a little longer to mesh – we still haven’t meshed completely yet. I think it’s each group, we’re struggling to mesh as an entire group and that’s cost us as a squad.”

making runs, because they hold their line a lot, so the big thing is to make runs to the back,” Meier said. “When we pressured the ball, my sister (Kierah) got the ball, played it back and I got past the goalie and scored.”

The Rockets offense picked up, assaulting the net and keeping Sycamore goalie Megan Schwartz busy, as she turned away eight shots. But in the final minute, Anna McMahon launched a free kick from the left side of the field beyond the box and crossed it to the right side. After Elizabeth Gousios kept it alive along the line, Megan Majewski tapped it in.

Burlington Central had six corner kicks, all in the second half and five in the final 25 minutes, and the Rockets also had three free kicks in the Spartans’ half of the field in the final five minutes.

“We were back on our heels for a good portion of it,” Lichamer said.

“We just couldn’t get the ball out and away. The wind, like I said, wasn’t helping us much. ... But we almost held off the storm there.”

“If we come up against them again, they’re definitely beatable,” Meier said. “If we see them in the sectional final, we’ll try our best again.”

Beyond the stats: Both teams had a game wiped out during the week – the Spartans’ conference game Thursday at Kaneland was moved to April 28, and the Rockets’ game Tuesday against Woodstock North was postponed.

They said it: “We planned on this being a learning experience, and I think we can move forward learning quite a bit,” Arneson said. “We love playing this team cause it pushes up, and it was a great game.”

Up next: Sycamore plays at Harlem at 6:30 p.m. Monday, and the Rockets host Woodstock.

MAPLE PARK – Host Kaneland took second place at the 39th Holmes Invitational Girls Track Meet behind strong performances from the entire team, while a young Sycamore team took ninth.

Knights senior sprinter Nicole Sreenan took first place in the 100-meter dash in 12.56 seconds and in the 200 in 26.26 seconds.

“It was pretty good,” she said. “This is actually my first meet of the season. … It worked out pretty good, I think,” she said.

Freshman Rachel Richtman took first for the Knights in the 3,200 in 11:41 and second in the 1,600 in 5:28.

“I just stayed with the girl who was ranked first for the first mile and a half and then at the 800 (mark), I decided that I would push the pace and see what I could do,” Richt-

man said.

Kaneland junior Cierra Kuipers took first in the pole vault with a jump of 10 feet, 6 inches.

“It feels good to see the hard work pay off. (I’ll) just keep working harder and see what comes next,” Kuipers said.

“I was happy with them,” Kaneland coach Doug Ecker said, “I thought they all competed well.”

For the Spartans, jackof-all-trades freshman Kylie Feuerbach placed in three events – earning fourth in the shot put, sixth in the discus, and sixth in the 400.

“She’s so talented and versatile,” Sycamore coach Joe McCormick said. “Between basketball, volleyball, and track … she could also high jump and hurdle, but you can only do so many events.”

Sophomore Hannah Kirby also placed third for the Spartans in the 800 in 2:28, and freshman Vaida Belich took

second in the high jump with a height of 4-10.

By the numbers: For Kaneland, Becca Richtman placed sixth in the 800, Kerrie Brolley took fifth and Haley Goodine sixth in the 100 hurdles, Avery Smith took sixth in the 100, Emma Stoker took fourth in the 200, the 800 relay team took third, and the 1,600 relay was fifth.

For the Spartans, Ariyana Williams took fourth in the long jump.

Beyond the stats: Kaneland swept the top three spots in the pole vault with Sydney Davidson coming in second and Lexie Guerra coming in third behind Kuipers.

They said it: “It’s good for us to be all going around the same height because we are competing against one another,” Kuipers said.

SYCAMORE – At least both teams know what they have to work on heading into a potential rematch in the postseason.

Burlington Central scored a goal off a free kick with 43 seconds left, and the Sycamore girls soccer team had to settle for a 1-1 tie Saturday in a game between the two frequent postseason adversaries.

The teams have met in four straight postseasons, with the Spartans winning three of them – including 4-1 last year in the Class 2A Burlington Central Regional final. All of those meetings have come in the regional. However, this year’s potential clash would not happen until the sectional, as both teams are hosting a regional.

“We matched up very well against a quality opponent that is having a

great year,” Sycamore coach Dave Lichamer said. “If we see them again down the road, we’re going to have a good matchup.”

Burlington Central coach Jess Arneson said playing the Spartans (40-3) always brings out the best in the Rockets (4-1-1).

“We know there are some real good players on that team,” Arneson said.

“We just have to make sure to understand and have the confidence to know we have some good players on our team, too. We need to take control of these games in the midfield and not be worried about their talent, because we’re just as talented.”

Sycamore started the scoring when Taylor Meier got behind the Rockets’ defense, beat a defender 1-on-1, then got past goalie Abbi Ciganek to tap a shot into the empty net in the 49th minute.

Spaniard’s long wait to win first major ends in playoff against Rose

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Sergio Garcia tugged the lapel of his green jacket with both hands, proud of his prize and how he earned it.

His hopes were fading Sunday in the Masters – two shots behind with six holes to play – when his tee shot bounced off a tree and into an azalea bush, the kind of bad luck he had come to expect in the majors. Instead of pouting, he figured out how to Leaderboard make par.

“It’s been an amazing week,” Garcia said, “and I’m going to enjoy it for the rest of my life.”

After almost two decades of heartache in the tournaments that define careers, Garcia finally showed the mettle to win a major. He overcame a two-shot deficit against Justin Rose and won on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

No one ever played more majors as a pro (70) before winning one for the first time.

Garcia got rid of the demons and the doubts with two big moments on the par 5s – one a par, the other an eagle – in closing with a 3-under 69. It was never easy until the end, when Rose sent his drive into the trees on the 18th hole in the playoff, punched out and failed to save par from 15 feet.

That gave the 37-year-old Spaniard two putts from 12 feet for the victory, and his putt swirled into the cup for a birdie.

He crouched in disbelief, both fists clenched and shaking, and he shouted above the loudest roar of the day.

Rose, who also closed with a 69, graciously patted Garcia’s cheek before they embraced. Rose then tapped Garcia on the heart, which turned out to be a lot bigger than anyone realized.

“Ser-gee-oh! Ser-gee-oh!” the delirious gallery chanted to Garcia. He turned with his arms to his side, blew a kiss to the crowd and then crouched again and slammed his fist into the turf of the green.

“Justin wasn’t making it easy. He was playing extremely well,” Garcia said. “But I knew what I was capable of doing, and I believe that I could do it.”

Garcia became the third Spaniard in a green jacket, winning on what would have been the 60th birthday of the late Seve Ballesteros. And it was Jose Maria Olazabal, who won the Masters in 1994 and 1999, who sent him a text on the eve of the Masters telling Garcia to believe and “to not let things get to me like I’ve done in the past.”

He didn’t get down after missing a 6-foot putt on the 16th hole to fall out of the lead, or missing a 5-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have won in regulation.

His chin was up. He battled to the end.

“If there’s anyone to lose to, it’s Sergio. He deserves it,” Rose said. “He’s had his fair share of heartbreak.”

This was shaping up as another, especially after Garcia watched a three-shot lead disappear as quickly as it took Rose to run off three straight birdies on the front nine.

Tied going to the back nine, Garcia immediately fell two shots behind with wild shots into the pine straw bed under the trees. Rose was poised to deliver a knockout on the par-5 13th when Garcia went left beyond the creek and into the bush. He had to take a penalty shot to get

out and hit his third shot 89 yards short of the green. Rose was just over the back of the green in two, in position to turn a two-shot lead into four.

Everyone figured this was coming, right?

Garcia himself had said, in a moment of self-pity, that he didn’t have what it takes to win a major. Four times he was runner-up. This was his third time playing in the final group. But right when it looked to be over, momentum shifted to Garcia.

He hit wedge to 7 feet and escaped with par. Rose rolled his chip down to 5 feet and missed the birdie putt. The lead stayed at two shots, and the game was on.

Garcia birdied the 14th to get within one. His 8-iron into the par-5 15th – “One of the best shots I hit all week,” he said – landed inches in front of the hole and nicked the pin, and he holed the 14-foot eagle putt to tie for the lead.

Rose took the lead with an 8-foot birdie on the 16th and gave it back by missing a 7-foot par putt on the 17th.

Not since 1998 have the last two players on the course gone to the 18th tied for the lead, and both had their chances to win. Rose’s approach hit off the side of the bunker and kicked onto the green, stopping 7 feet away. Garcia answered with a wedge that covered the flag and settled 5 feet away.

Both missed.

The playoff didn’t last long. Rose was in trouble from the start with a tee shot that sailed right, leaving him blocked by a Magnolia tree. He chipped out under the tree, hit his third shot to 15 feet and missed the par putt.

Former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel birdied the 18th for a 68 to finish third. Matt Kuchar made a holein-one on the 16th that gave him hope but not for very long. He tied for fourth with Thomas Pieters, who ran off four birdies on the back nine.

Jordan Spieth, starting the final round only two shots behind, put another tee shot into the water on No. 12 long after it mattered. He had to birdie three of his last four holes for a 75. Also an afterthought was Rickie Fowler, who started one shot behind and shot 76.

All that mattered was Garcia and Rose, who delivered a final hour as compelling as any at the Masters and a champion who began to wonder whether he would ever win a major.

Sycamore pitchers combine on no-hitter DAILY CHRONICLE

sports@daily-chronicle.com For the second time in a week, the Sycamore baseball team pitched a no-hitter.

Jarod Montavon went 51/3 innings, while Austin Verhaeghe got the last five outs for a combined no-hitter, and Sycamore won, 4-0, Saturday at Belvidere North.

Montavon reached the 93-pitch mark before coach Jason Cavanaugh took him out with a runner on base, as he was close to the pitch count.

“He wasn’t going to get five outs with those 12 pitches,” Cavanaugh said. “There was no chance to really go for it. But it was nice to see Austin come in and finish it out for him.”

Verhaeghe induced a double play and faced just four batters to get his five outs. Montavon struck out six and walked three to pick up the win.

“It was kind of a tough day to pitch

with the wind blowing straight out to left,” Cavanaugh said. “He did an excellent job of pounding the strike zone.

The Barbs start conference play Monday at home against Kaneland.

DeKalb third at Huntley: Bri Buggs won the 100-meter dash and the 400 as the Barbs finished third behind Harlem and Huntley in the 11-team meet.

Buggs finished the 100 in 13.01 and the 400 in 59.26 – just ahead of freshman teammate Kyra Ozier, who was second in 59.43. Freshman Brianna Barwick won the 300 hurdles in 49.90, edging out junior teammate Sierra Long, who was second in 50.07. Freshman Sydney Dumas was second in the 200 for DeKalb

in 27.99, 0.12 off the winning time.

Ally Versluys gave up two earned runs and struck out four. Kayleigh Reifsteck hit a home run and drove in two runs for Sycamore (3-5-1), while Lexi Gordon, Mia Richards and Mya Lee each added hits.

The Spartans will play Tuesday at Morris.

Kyle Schwarber and Ben Zobrist hit home runs and Jake Arrieta threw seven strong innings as the Cubs got double-digit hits for the second straight game Kyle and took the weekend se- Schwarber ries from the Milwaukee Brewers with a 7-4 victory Sunday.

The Cubs scored four runs in the top of the first off Brewers starter Zach Davies (0-2) on a two-run double by Addison Russell and a two-run triple from Jason Heyward.

“Any time you can put early runs on the board, you have to take advantage of it,” Russell said. “It puts the pitcher at ease and gets us in that mode of swinging the bat and taking some good pitches, and we did that today.”

Milwaukee did not get a hit after Braun’s home run in the third inning until Domingo Santana homered off Hector Rondon with two outs in the ninth. Cubs closer Wade Davis came on to get the final out.

Time to celebrate: After six road games to begin the season, the Cubs will open a three-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday. The Cubs

will unveil the championship banner Monday and will receive their World Series rings in a pregame ceremony Wednesday.

Arrieta (2-0) allowed just three hits with 10 strikeouts over seven innings, the only blemish on his line a three-run home run hit by Ryan Braun in the third.

“It was a mistake and he made me pay for it,” Arrieta said. “But those things happen; bounce back. I don’t think I gave up a hit after that.”

The right-hander retired 13 of the 14 batters following Braun’s home run, including a stretch of five consecutive strikeouts.

“He was really good today,” Maddon said. “I thought great command of his fastball, really good curveball, outstanding curveball. He was just really on top of his game, I thought.”

Schwarber connected for a solo homer off Davies in the second, but the right-hander did eventually settle in to set down 12 of the next 13 Cubs to get through the fifth inning.

“I was falling behind guys and leaving balls over the plate,” Davies said. “It was a terrible first inning, but I battled through it.”

Zobrist increased the Cubs’ lead to 6-3 with a homer off reliever Carlos Torres as part of a two-run seventh.

Santana, Minnesota continue quick start

CHICAGO – After winning five of their first six games, the surprising Minnesota Twins have the best record in the American League. And they don’t plan on looking back.

Miguel Sano and Jorge Polanco homered to back Ervin Santana’s six scoreless innings as the Twins beat the White Sox, 4-1, on Sunday for their best start since 2010.

Minnesota finished with the worst mark in the majors last season at 59103.

“We have a lot of good defense, a lot of good offense right now,” Santana said. “So we just have to keep it up and don’t worry about the past.”

Santana (2-0) held the Sox to two singles and lowered his ERA to 0.69.

Jose Quintana (0-2) regrouped from a rough opening day start to allow two runs and strike out seven in 6 1/3 innings. Quintana, who has been the

subject of trade speculation for the rebuilding White Sox, gave up six runs and three homers against Detroit in his season debut. Last year, he was an All-Star and set career bests for ERA (3.20) and strikeouts (181).

“I’m not happy because we don’t have results,” Quintana said.

Cody Asche’s single in the second was the Sox’s only hit until Jose Abreu singled in the sixth.

Santana has allowed four hits and one run in 13 innings this season.

“He makes it look easy at times,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said.

Molitor said he wanted to conserve Santana, who threw 87 pitches, for the long season. That was OK with the right-hander.

“We’re competing right now. Everything is going our way,” Santana said.

Brandon Kintzler got four outs for his third save in three opportunities.

With the bases loaded in the eighth, he hit Avisail Garcia with a pitch to bring in a run.

DEAR ABBY My boyfriend and I have been Jeanne together off and Phillips on for more than two years. We have been in a long-distance relationship the entire time. I live in California, and he lives in the Midwest. I’ve been trying to get him out here because I have a job I love, and he could easily get a job in his sector out here.

His issue is that this area has “too many people and is too fast-paced” for him. I’m not sure what to do. I don’t want to quit my job and move there. Finding a job there wouldn’t be easy since construction is not booming as much. What do I do? – Long-Distance Dating Dear Long-Distance: I don’t think you should give up a job you love in an environment you enjoy on the chance this two-year relationship might become permanent. If it goes nowhere, where does that leave you? It’s time to ask yourself whether you really want to tie your future to someone who prefers a different way of life.

Dear Abby: My son has his master’s degree in international relations, so he travels to places I will never see. He’s in Italy now, and he asked me what I would like for a souvenir. I said I wanted his memories.

I asked him to get a bag and put in it menus, train tickets and bar napkins, and to jot down at night on hotel stationery what he did, saw, how the weather was. I asked him to mention anything different or unusual and collect coasters, valet stubs, anything that would help him share his experiences with me when he gets back.

Last month, my wife and I were playing online at bridgebase.com against robots (computer-controlled opponents). We had a very rare occurrence, bidding to six hearts on three consecutive deals. Each was interesting, starting with the one in today’s diagram.

I like strong jump shifts to the two-level, but keep them narrowly defined. The responder has either a strong one-suiter or a good two-suiter (opener’s suit and the suit in which responder jumps). In principle, the point range is 12-16: sufficient to insist on game, but asking opener to decide on slam.

Look at the North hand. Given that introduction, assuming you open one diamond, what would you rebid after partner responds two hearts?

I was not fond of rebidding three diamonds with such a weak suit. If partner had a heart one-suiter, my queen-doubleton was acceptable support. I might have rebid two notrump to see what partner did (but that would have promised 15-plus points in our system because we use the weak-no-trump opening that shows 12-14 points). At the time, I bid three hearts.

Now partner rebid four diamonds, which I thought was at least fourcard support. Since we seemed to have a good double fit, I control-bid five clubs. This persuaded my partner to jump to six hearts. Understandably, she expected me to have better diamonds.

West led the club three: ace, eight, 10. Immediately, declarer played two rounds of diamonds.

West, guided by partner’s unwise club-eight signal, led another club, so we made the slam.

One other pair bid (and made) six hearts after North passed, and South opened two clubs!
