“You’re dealing with an animal that is as smart as you are, as resourceful as you are, and can fight back in the way you fight them,” Cole said.

Maybe in some cases, our ancestors ate companions who had died for an easy meal, Cole said.

But his main point is that usually, the cannibalism was probably driven by some social or cultural factors rather than just nutrition.

For example, it may have followed episodes of violence, as in defending territory, he said.

Cole’s paper seems unlikely to revolutionize the field. Two experts, Tim White of the University of California, Berkeley, and Paola Villa of the University of Colorado Museum in Boulder, said they don’t know of anybody who has credibly proposed the idea that Cole takes aim at, that our ancestors hunted each other simply as food.

The new work “does not change our general understanding of human cannibalism,” Villa said in an email.

But Palmira Saladie, of the Catalan Institute for Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution near Barcelona, Spain, said Cole’s study “will undoubtedly be key in the interpretation of new sites (and) the re-evaluation of old interpretations.”

To understand why our forerunners sometimes ate each other, she wrote in an email, “We still have a long way to go.”

By MALCOLM RITTER NEW YORK – You know those snacks that are OK if they’re handy, but not worth the bother if you have to go track them down? Our Stone Age forerunners may have felt the same way about eating each other.

Neanderthals and prehistoric members of our own species occasionally practiced cannibalism and explaining that is a scientific challenge.

Generally, it has been attributed to factors such as starvation, violence between groups or ceremonial practices after a death.

Now a new study suggests they were probably not hunting each other just for food.

That’s because “we are not very nutritious, on a calorie level,” compared with large game animals, said James Cole of the University of Brighton in England.

Next to a mammoth, even a dozen burly Neanderthals would be slim pickings.

Cole presented his argument Thursday in the journal Scientific Reports.

He focused on nine previously reported fossil sites where researchers have found evidence of cannibalism, such as marks on the bones that indicated butchery.

The sites were dated to between roughly 14,000 years ago to more than 900,000 years ago, which falls within the Paleolithic period the study focused on.

Five involved our evolutionary cousins the Neanderthals, two involved our own species, and the rest were other extinct members of the human evolutionary branch.

His question: How many calories would the bodies at each site provide?

To estimate that, he first used previously published data to conclude that eating an average-sized modern-day man could yield up to about 144,000 calories. He then adapted that to the age ranges of the bodies.

Even if all the bodies at a site were consumed in a single episode, he concluded, the energy payoff would be no more than what a hunter could get from a single large animal like a mammoth, a woolly rhino or a bear. So why bother with the hassle of hunting your own kind?

Judge to rule next week on certificate of innocence for Jack McCullough

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Jack McCullough, whose conviction in the 1957 kidnapping and slaying of 7-year-old Maria Ridulph was vacated last year, testified during a hearing Thursday that he was seeking a certificate of innocence to get his good name back.

“I am innocent, proven innocent,” McCullough said. “My name has been in all the papers coast to coast. I have been put forward as a monster and people still think I’m a monster.”

Pending a ruling Wednesday by DeKalb County Judge William Brady, who previously has ruled to vacate McCullough’s conviction, the 77-year-old McCullough might be granted the certificate, which deems that a wrongfully convicted person was innocent of all crimes for which he or she was incarcerated.

McCullough had been convicted in 2012 after an investigation by the Illinois State Police and was sentenced to life in prison. An Illinois appellate court upheld the decision in 2015.

However, using FBI reports compiled after Ridulph’s disappearance in Sycamore and evidence that McCullough used a pay phone in Rockford about the time Ridulph last was seen, former DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack found that McCullough had an alibi, and the charges were dismissed. However, there still is the possibility McCullough could be charged with the crime again.

Under Illinois statute, a certificate of innocence can be granted if the petitioner can prove he or she did not, by his or her own conduct, voluntarily cause or bring about his or her conviction.

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Rick Amato disagreed that this could be proved, but for the purposes of the hearing, he acknowledged that all other conditions of the certificate of innocence were met.

Russell Ainsworth of the Chicago-based civil rights law firm Loevy & Loevy and part of the Exoneration Project, a free legal clinic at the University of Chicago that represents the wrongfully convicted, called three witnesses during the hearing to reinforce McCullough’s innocence, including McCullough himself.

Cullough who was with him the night Ridulph disappeared. She testified on video that there was nothing unusual about McCullough’s behavior when she saw him.

Ainsworth then called Nancy Steblay, professor of psychology at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, who questioned the reliability of eyewitness memory, which helped convict McCullough in 2012.

Steblay said Kathy Sigman, a friend of Ridulph’s who had been playing with her up to her disappearance, picked McCullough out of a lineup of six mug shots in 2010. However, every mug shot except McCullough’s was from a high school yearbook that had a different background.

Although Steblay did not say whether she thought McCullough was innocent, she said she was not confident in the reliability of Sigman’s selection, especially since it was 52 years after Rid-

ulph’s abduction and she had incorrectly identified a suspect during the initial investigation in 1957.

“We don’t want witnesses to slide into another way of coming to a decision,” Steblay said. “Instead of absolutely recognizing someone, what they begin to do is start comparing pictures and seeing which ones are the closest or a process of elimination. That is what we found in the laboratory to be a very dangerous process, because it really means the witness can’t recognize anyone.”

McCullough said he was satisfied with how the hearing went, and he thinks that granting the certificate of innocence is the only decision that could possibly be made.

“I just feel that it’s gone full circle, and I’m happy it’s over,” McCullough said.

He added that he felt what was done to him was criminal, and similar corruption needs to end.

“The people who did this to me deserve to go to prison,” McCullough said.

“They knew that I was innocent. They had the FBI documents, and the documents proved I couldn’t have done this.

I want justice.”

Pat Quinn, Maria’s sister, was in attendance for the hearing, along with her husband, Bill, and family friend, Nancy Miller.

“He’s very likely to get the certificate of innocence, and it’s just a sad thing,” Quinn said.

With a certificate of innocence, McCullough could be eligible for compensation from the state of Illinois for false imprisonment.

Since he served less than five years, McCullough could be awarded up to $85,350 for his wrongful conviction, according to Illinois state law.

Brady’s ruling will be at 1 p.m.

Wind testing towers panned again South Grove Township residents sound off at public hearing in Sycamore

SYCAMORE – Jennifer Bunker is used to watching her children play on their four-wheelers and having barbecues on her South Grove Township property, but now she is concerned of a potential intrusion into her tranquility – a 198-foot wind testing tower. “[My property] is not going to be worth a plug nickel if [a wind testing tower] is right there in my backyard,” Bunker said. “My 6 acres is going to be worth nothing, absolutely nothing. I won’t be able to get someone to buy it ever.”

Bunker was among a room full of DeKalb County residents who lined up during a public hearing Thursday to go on record stating their opposition to the proposed wind testing towers.

San Diego-based EDF Renewable Energy has asked the DeKalb County Board for a special use permit to construct two wind testing towers that would determine the economic viability of areas in South Grove Township for potential wind turbines.

Almost everyone at Thursday’s public hearing in the DeKalb County Legislative Center seemed to be against any possible development from the company, many wearing matching anti-wind turbine stickers on their clothes.

Some expressed concern that they were not invited to meetings with company representatives and property owners who would potentially lease their land for wind turbines.

P.J. Saliterman, EDF’s development director, said the company identified residents with a certain land acreage who could potentially host wind turbines in the future.

“There are different sets of questions that those groups might have, so from our standpoint it makes sense to have different types of events for people that have different sets of questions,” he said.

“We’re not talking about signing leases with everyone in the project area.”

Donna Romain of South Grove Township said the company was lacking transparency by hosting meetings without telling everyone in the area who might be affected.

“That’s kind of like having a party next door and you’re not invited,” Romain said. “That’s not neighborly.”

“I do feel that we may be putting the cart before the horse to put the [wind] towers up before we have an ordinance,” said Brad Bellanger of South Grove Township.

The length of time the wind testing towers would stay up was another issue debated.

Although county staff have suggested a limit of 18 months for the towers, Saliterman said the company is requesting a period of three years.

Some had an issue with the fact that data gathered by the testing towers would stay within the company and not be shared with the board, and others suggested that less densely populated areas would be more suitable for a wind farm.

“You said you were open to suggestions? My suggestion is find another

county,” Bunker said.

DeKalb County Planning, Zoning and Building Director Derek Hiland said the Planning and Zoning Committee will consider input from the two public hearings and make a recommendation to the

board whether to approve or deny the request for a special use permit.

He said the committee can also amend the request or add conditions to the proposal before making a recommendation.

before joining the U.S. Navy in 1972 where he served until 1983 in Idaho Falls as a nuclear submarine instructor. He moved to Longmont following his honorary discharge.

He married Christine Showalter on November 24, 1984, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Longmont. They later divorced.

Darrell worked as a software engineer at StorgeTek, DigitalGlobe and Intrado before retiring in 2011.

He was a member of American Legion Post 211 in Denver; he enjoyed scuba diving, traveling and cruising to warm destinations.

Darrell is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his stepdaughter, Holly Triplett and her husband, Kevin of Grand Junction; his brothers, David Freeman of Stirling, KY, and Dana Hood of Fort Collins, CO; his sister, Debra Ebright of Grandview, MO; and his granddaughter, Jessica.

At Darrell’s request, no services will be held.

Car crashes into KishHealth building

SYCAMORE – Sycamore police responded to a car crashing into the side of the KishHealth System Physician Group building Thursday at 1850 Gateway Drive, Sycamore.

The Buick Verano broke through the brick exterior of the building, exposing the insulation.

Road closure coming Monday in DeKalb for railroad repairs

On Monday, the Illinois Department of Transportation is closing the intersection of West Lincoln Highway and Fourth Street for railroad track repairs, according to a news release from the city of DeKalb.

Union Pacific Railroad expects the repairs to last no more than four days, and drivers should expect delays during the morning and afternoon rush hours.

All downtown businesses located near the closure will remain open.

SYCAMORE – A Rockford man faces five felony charges after police identified him as a suspect believed to have sexually abused underage girls he met in Sycamore through a dating app.

Skyler H. Whitenack, 21, of the 4900 block of Linden Road, was charged Wednesday with four counts of aggravated criminal sexual Skyler H. abuse and one count Whitenack of indecent solicitation of a child, according to a Sycamore Police Department news release.

Whitenack allegedly represented himself as a minor and contacted underage girls using the “Meet Me” app, according to the release.

Police said Whitenack met the underage girls March 27 in Sycamore where a sexual encounter is alleged to have occurred.

Sycamore police acted as one of the underage victims on the app and started a conversation with Whitenack, through which he agreed to meet at the same location of the March 27 incident, according to the release.

He was arrested upon his arrival and taken to the DeKalb County Jail awaiting a bond hearing.

J.B. Pritzker announces governor bid

CHICAGO – Billionaire J.B. Pritzker touted his business record and progressive values Thursday as he kicked off his campaign for Illinois governor, raising the financial stakes in what was already expected to be a costly and competitive fight to unseat Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Pritzker wasted little time in blasting the venture capitalist-turned-governor, even comparing him to President Donald Trump. Rauner has been at odds with the Democrat-controlled Legislature since he took office.

“Gov. Rauner talks about what he might have done or what he tried to get done. It’s past time for all his talk. It’s time for action,” Pritzker told the crowd of union officials and community leaders gathered at a park facility in a predominantly African-American neighborhood on the city’s South Side. “Everything

News from across the state Illinois House approves new stopgap budget plan

SPRINGFIELD– The Illinois House voted Thursday to tap $817 million in accumulated but unallocated revenue to temporarily relieve struggling universities and human services.

The 64-45 vote represented a largely partisan roll-call, with minority Republicans saying that another temporary spending plan amid the nation’s longest state budget stalemate since World War II would actually hurt long-term efforts.

The vote ended a two-hour debate over a small amount of funding in a plan the Senate can’t even consider until after the General Assembly returns from a two-week spring break. Even then its chances don’t look good because

Last month, Kennedy donated $250,100 to his own campaign, a move that under Illinois campaign finance law lifted the caps on campaign contributions for all candidates. His campaign said he raised another $1 million from about 3,000 donors in the first six weeks of his candidacy.

That easily makes him the wealthiest person running, although Rauner – a multimillionaire who put $50 million into his campaign fund late last year – also has received millions in campaign contributions from Illinois’ richest person, businessman Ken Griffin.

Pritzker, 52, acknowledged his own wealth and opportunity. He said his first job was washing sheets in his parents’ hotels and that his mother raised him with an “abiding sense of social justice.”

“I wake up every morning knowing that I need to work hard to earn what I’ve been given,” he said. He added that Illinois is losing jobs and opportunities because of inaction by Rauner and the state needs to first tax its “millionaires and billionaires” before the middle class.

Rauner’s 2014 race against Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn set a record for spending in Illinois, topping $100 million.

Outside groups already have been active in the 2018 contest as well. Last month, a group affiliated with the Republican Governors Association began airing campaign-style ads featuring Rauner. In them he talks up his efforts to improve Illinois’ business climate and enact changes such as term limits for lawmakers.

The ads come as Rauner and the Democrat-controlled Legislature have been unable to agree on a state budget for nearly two years, leading to major cuts to social services, colleges and other programs.

Northeastern Illinois to cancel class for 3 days

CHICAGO – Northeastern Illinois University is planning to cancel three days of classes in order to cut costs as public universities in Illinois struggle to make ends meet during the state’s budget stalemate.

The Chicago-based university will no longer hold classes April 11, 12 and May 1.

Illinois has been without a budget for 21 months and has a $12.9 billion backlog of bills. Northeastern Illinois interim President Richard Helldobler called the state’s unprecedented budget impasse a “state of emergency” for the school.

A statement from the university said administrators also are speaking with labor unions that represent their employees as school officials contemplate a schoolwide shutdown for those three dates.

Prison inmate forms two political action committees

CHICAGO – An Illinois man sentenced to 10 years in prison for bilking an acquaintance out of $93,000 has started two political action committees from behind bars.

The Center for Public Integrity reported that Angelo Pesce is a convicted felon and cannot vote, but there’s nothing stopping him from creating the fundraising entities.

Papers filed last week with the Federal Election Commission identify the 51-year-old Pesce as the PACs’ treasurer and agent and list his mailing address as the Taylorville Correctional Center in central Illinois.

The filings don’t explain who or what will benefit from the donations, but the name of one urges impeachment of an unnamed target referenced with an expletive and the other appears to support pedophiles.

Woman sues Uber, says she was stabbed by passenger

CHICAGO – A Chicago woman has sued Uber and a customer of the ride-sharing company, saying she was stabbed by another passenger.

Jennifer Camacho said she called an UberPool for a ride home Jan. 30. She said the passenger in the front seat began slashing her in the face as soon as she got in. The lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court contends the 25-year-old Camacho suffered several facial wounds.

Plaintiff’s attorney Bryant Greening said Uber was negligent. Greening is seeking a judgment of more than $50,000 for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

Uber spokeswoman Kayla Whaling declined to comment on the lawsuit.

Chicago police arrested 34-year-old Julie Ramer for the attack on Camacho and charged her with battery.

Senate GOP clears way for court pick

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Republicans invoked the “nuclear option” Thursday in the Senate, unilaterally rewriting the chamber’s rules to allow President Donald Trump’s nominee to ascend to the Supreme Court.

Furious Democrats objected until the end, but their efforts to block Judge Neil Gorsuch failed as expected. Lawmakers of both parties bemoaned the long-term implications for the Senate, the court and the country.

“We will sadly point to today as a turning point in the history of the Senate and the Supreme Court,” said Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York.

The maneuvering played out in an atmosphere of tension in the Senate chamber with most senators in their seats, a rare and theatrical occurrence.

First Democrats mounted a filibuster in an effort to block Gorsuch by denying him the 60 votes needed to advance to a final vote. Then Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky raised a point of order, suggesting that Supreme Court nominees should not be subjected to a 60-vote threshold but instead a simple majority in the

100-member Senate.

McConnell was overruled, but appealed the ruling. And on that he prevailed on a 5248 party line vote. The 60-vote filibuster requirement on Supreme Court nominees was effectively gone, and with it the last vestige of bipartisanship on presidential nominees in an increasingly polarized Senate.

A final confirmation vote on Gorsuch is expected Friday and he could then be sworn in in time to take his seat on the court later this month and hear the final cases of the term.

The maneuvering played out with much hand-wringing from all sides about the future of the Senate, as well as unusually bitter accusations and counter-accusations as each side blamed the other. The rules change is known as the “nuclear option” because of its far-reaching implications.

McConnell accused Democrats of forcing his hand by trying to filibuster a highly qualified nominee in Gorsuch, 49, a 10-year veteran of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver with a consistently conservative record. McConnell vowed that the rules change would block the Gorsuch filibuster, and all future ones, a change many lawmakers lamented could lead to an even more polarized Senate, court and country.

U.S. missiles blast air base in Syria The ASSOCIATED PRESS PALM BEACH, Fla. – The U.S. blasted a Syrian air base with a barrage of cruise missiles Thursday night in fiery retaliation for this week’s gruesome chemical weapons attack against civilians. President Donald Trump cast the U.S. assault as vital to deter future use of poison gas and called on other nations to join in seeking “to end the slaughter and bloodshed in Syria.”

It was the first direct American assault on the Syrian government and Trump’s most dramatic military order since becoming president just more than two months ago.

The strikes also risk thrusting the U.S. deeper into an intractable conflict that his predecessor spent years trying to avoid.

Announcing the assault from his Florida resort, Trump said there was no doubt Syrian President Bashar Assad was responsible for the chemical attack, which he said employed banned gases and killed dozens.

“Assad choked out the lives of helpless men, women and children,” Trump declared.

The U.S. strikes – about 60 missiles launched from the USS Ross and USS Porter – hit the government-controlled Shayrat air base in central Syria, where U.S. officials said the Syrian military planes that dropped the chemicals had taken off. The U.S. missiles hit at 8:45 p.m. in Washington, 3:45 Friday morning in Syria. The missiles targeted the base’s airstrips, hangars, control tower and ammunition areas, officials said.

Syrian state TV reported a U.S. missile attack on a number of military targets and called the attack an “aggression.”

The U.S. assault marked a striking reversal for Trump, who warned as a candidate against the U.S. being pulled into the Syrian civil war that began six years ago. But the president appeared moved by the photos of children killed in the chemical attack, calling it a “disgrace to humanity” that crossed “a lot of lines.”

U.S. officials placed some of the blame on Russia, one of Syria’s most important benefactors. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, in Florida with Trump, said Moscow had failed in living up to a 2013 agreement that was intended to strip Syria of its chemical weapons stockpiles.

“Either Russia has been complicit or Russia has been simply incompetent in its ability to deliver on its end of the agreement,” Tillerson said.

About 60 U.S. Tomahawk missiles, fired from warships in the Mediterranean Sea, targeted an air base in retaliation for the attack that America

believes Syrian government aircraft launched with the nerve agent sarin mixed with chlorine gas. The president did not announce the attacks in advance, although he and other national security officials ratcheted up their warnings to the Syrian government throughout the day Thursday.

The strike came as Trump was hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping in meetings focused in part on another pressing U.S. security dilemma: North Korea’s nuclear program.

Trump’s actions in Syria could signal to China that the new president isn’t afraid of unilateral military steps, even if key nations such as China are standing in the way.

“This clearly indicates the president is willing to take decisive action when called for,” Tillerson said.

Trump has advocated greater counterterrorism cooperation with Russia, Assad’s most powerful military backer. Just last week, the Trump administration signaled the U.S. was no longer interested in trying to push Assad from power over his direction of a conflict that has killed hundreds of thousands of people and led to the worst refugee crisis since World War II.

Nunes steps away from Russia investigation

WASHINGTON – The Republican chairman is stepping aside from leading a congressional investigation of Russian interference in last year’s U.S. presidential election, citing ethics complaints that he mishandled classified information.

The decision by Rep. Devin Nunes of California comes amid partisan turmoil on the House intelligence committee. Democrats have alleged that Nunes, who was on President Donald Trump’s transition team, is too close to the White House and cannot lead an impartial inquiry. In an extraordinary step, the usually-quiet House Ethics Committee said that it is investigating whether Nunes improperly disclosed classified information.

Trump said Nunes is “a very honorable guy.”

Nunes blamed “left-wing activist groups” for filing accusations against him with the Office of Congressional Ethics.

“The charges are entirely false and politically motivated and are being leveled just as the American people are beginning to learn the truth about the improper unmasking of the identities of U.S. citizens and other abuses of power,” Nunes said in a statement.

Nunes’ move could be seen as a win for Democrats, whose cries for an independent panel to investigate Russia’s possible ties with the Trump campaign have grown. They have pointed in particular to two Nunes trips to the White House – one announced, one not – as evidence that his loyalty to Trump outweighs his commitment to leading a bipartisan investigation.

By all accounts, the intelligence committee’s growing partisanship has

become a distraction from its underlying investigations.

The top Democrat on the committee, Adam Schiff of California, said he appreciated Nunes’ decision to step aside from the Russia investigation.

“There was a cloud hanging over us after the White House incident,” Schiff told The Associated Press on Thursday. Although Schiff said the panel’s investigation is back on track, the Republicans had not signed off on rescheduling a public hearing with former Obama administration officials.

Schiff said it was important that the public hear testimony from former acting Attorney General Sally Yates about why Trump’s first national security adviser was fired. Nunes canceled the hearing.

As the majority party in the House, Republicans will keep the committee chairmanship. GOP Rep. Mike Conaway of Texas, with help from Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina and Rep. Tom Rooney of Florida, will temporarily take charge of the investigation, House Speaker Paul Ryan said.

Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Thursday that he doesn’t know Conaway, but he heard he was well-respected.

“High quality,” Trump said.

Schiff said Conaway does not have the same history with the White House that Nunes does.

Two watchdog groups, Democracy 21 and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, had asked the House Ethics Committee to investigate whether Nunes disclosed classified information he learned from intelligence reports.

In a statement, CREW spokesman Jordan Libowitz said the group believes that Nunes’ potential violation of House ethics rules “is so grave that it needs to be investigated right away.”

What to say to Xi Jinping There is reason for concern that President Donald Trump, who began a two-day summit Thursday with Chinese President Xi Jinping, is not prepared to inaugurate what probably will be the most important foreign relationship of his presidency.

Xi will have arrived with a polished list of Chinese demands; Trump, who has yet to staff most of the senior Asia positions in his administration or conduct a review of China policy, appears to be improvising.

The danger is that he, like Secretary of State Rex Tillerson during his recent visit to Beijing, could be drawn into China’s conception of a “new form of great power relations” before he has had the chance to formulate one of his own.

The confusion about administration policy is partly the result of a positive development: Trump has retreated from some of the counterproductive China-bashing he promoted during the presidential campaign and immediately afterward. He did not designate the Xi regime as a currency manipulator on “Day One” of his presidency; he told the Financial Times this week that he would postpone any talk of punitive tariffs on Chinese goods. He assured Xi during their first substantial phone call that he supported the one-China policy, reversing a hint that he might not.

These necessary adjustments have been accompanied by less explicable retreats. Since Trump took office, U.S. naval forces reportedly have not received administration permission to challenge Chinese claims in the South China Sea through “freedom of navigation” exercises. And Trump handed Beijing a major geopolitical coup by withdrawing from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a step that left Xi with the opportunity to set the economic rules for the region.

If the administration has focused on an issue for the summit, it would appear to be North Korea, which a White House briefer said is “a matter of urgent interest for the president.” Trump appears to be betting that he can, unlike the three presidents before him, persuade the Chinese leadership to bring serious pressure to bear on the Pyongyang regime, which is racing to develop the capability to strike the U.S. with nuclear-armed intercontinental missiles.

The president is right to push Xi on the North Korean threat; he should make clear that the U.S. will proceed with the deployment of the THAAD antimissile system in South Korea in spite of China’s objections. But it is not certain that Trump can deliver on his threat that “if China is not going to solve North Korea, we will.” Rather than tempt Xi to call his bluff, Trump should be offering assurances that change on the Korean Peninsula can be managed in a way that protects Beijing’s legitimate interests.

Still problems with NCAA in N. Carolina If you’re looking for a lesson in sugar-coating a pickle, we’d suggest you take a look at the statement North Carolina Senate leader Phil Berger and House Speaker Tim Moore released Tuesday after the NCAA agreed to consider North Carolina for future tournaments and championship games.

Here’s what they said: “We are pleased with the NCAA’s decision and acknowledgment that our compromise legislation ‘restores the state to ... a landscape similar to other jurisdictions presently hosting NCAA championships.’ ” We don’t want to rain on the lawmakers’ victory parade, but we need to point out that the NCAA Board of Governors said it “reluctantly voted to allow consideration of championship bids in North Carolina by our committees that are presently meeting.”

It wasn’t just reluctant. It was also conditional.

“As with most compromises,” the NCAA said in a statement, “this new law is far from perfect.”

The replacement legislation, House Bill 142, “minimally achieved a situation where we believe NCAA championships may

be conducted in a nondiscriminatory environment,” the collegiate athletic sanctioning group said.

But that doesn’t mean a free pass for future tournaments.

Any North Carolina site that is awarded a championship event, the NCAA said, must “submit documentation demonstrating how student athletes and fans will be protected from discrimination The state’s own anti-discrimination laws don’t offer protection for sexual identity or preference.

It’s still legal in North Carolina to discriminate against gays, lesbians and transgender people because of who and what they are. And House Bill 142 prohibits municipalities from passing their own anti-discrimination ordinances until December of 2020. So, what happens when the NCAA comes knocking and asks a potential host site to show how LGBT civil rights will be protected? The party could be over fast.

HB 142 also says the state has the sole right to regulate access to multiple-occupancy bathrooms, locker rooms and changing facilities. And although they’re not talking publicly about gender

identity, two Republican lawmakers are preparing to file a bill creating tougher punishments for people trespassing in bathrooms reserved for the opposite sex. Not hard to figure out where this is going. We expect the NCAA might notice, too.

We suggest putting a big cork in that bottle and taking a more intelligent approach to an incendiary issue.

State Sen. Wesley Meredith of Fayetteville talked last week about the testimony of a transgender man and woman who appeared before the Senate Rules Committee during HB 142 debate.

“That’s the first time someone’s put a face with what’s going on,” Meredith said. “We need to have a discussion. And those people came to Rules and expressed how they felt. But we need to talk to them, like I’m talking to you. We’ve never done that.”

About time our lawmakers do exactly that, and we’re grateful to Meredith for suggesting it.

It’s likely to be a lot more effective than trying to sugar-coat a pickle.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Really, O’Reilly – look at sponsor’s moral compass It’s hard to give the complete list of companies pulling their ads right now from Bill O’Reilly’s show on Fox News Channel, because the number keeps growing.

Chances are that in the time it took me to write the previous sentence, another corporate sponsor decided to suspend advertising. Just on O’Reilly’s show, understand. They’re still airing ads on Fox News Channel, whose chairman was fired last summer for a sexual harassment scandal.

Yeah. I know.

Last weekend, The New York Times reported that five women were paid a total of $13 million by either O’Reilly or Fox News and its parent company, 21st Century Fox, related to five separate accusations of sexual harassment and verbal abuse against O’Reilly.

Well. This wasn’t supposed to get out.

From the network: “21st Century Fox takes matters of workplace behavior very seriously. Notwithstanding the fact that no current or former Fox News employee ever took advantage of the 21st Century Fox hotline to raise a concern about Bill O’Reilly, even anonymously.”

Do you see what they did there?

Translation: If this had really happened, these women would have trusted the network that employs and promotes Bill O’Reilly as its superstar to take up their cause against said superstar.

Good news for a pollinator – the rusty patched bumblebee President Donald Trump and the GOP Congress have engaged in a broad regulatory rollback, hitting everything from internet privacy standards to workplace safety rules and environmental regulations. So it is more notable than usual that one worthwhile federal regulatory initiative got through recently: The rusty patched bumblebee is being added to the endangered species list after all. Not only is this remarkable because the Trump administration allowed the listing to proceed over objections from fossil-fuel and other business interests, it also highlights the ongoing importance of caring for at-risk pollinators, which, free of charge, play a crucial role in growing the nation’s food and powering its agricultural economy.

“Pollinators are small but mighty parts of the natural mechanism that

sustains us and our world,” Fish and Wildlife Service Midwest Regional Director Tom Melius said in January.

“Without them, our forests, parks, meadows and shrublands, and the abundant, vibrant life they support, cannot survive, and our crops require laborious, costly pollination by hand.”

The service reports that insects, mostly bees, contribute some $3 billion of economic value to the U.S. every year.

Citing “a swift and dramatic decline since the late 1990s,” the service moved to list the species as endangered just before Trump’s inauguration. “Abundance of the rusty patched bumblebee has plummeted by 87 percent, leaving small, scattered populations in 13 states and one [Canadian] province,” the service warned in a Jan. 10 announcement.

But the Trump administration froze all new regulations when Trump entered office, so the listing did not come into effect Feb. 10, as planned. Fortunately, the delay was not a long one: The first bumblebee and first bee of any type in the continental U.S. is now officially protected under the Endangered Species Act. That means the federal government will move to protect the bumblebees’ habitat and restrict activities that drive down their numbers.

They could use the protection.

Although reports of massive die-offs and colony collapse have somewhat exaggerated the global threat bees face, the U.S. still has lost nearly a million honeybee colonies since 1989, when the number peaked at 3.5 million. Bees are resilient creatures, their queens capable of repopulating hives at an

astonishing rate. Beekeepers have been able to fight the decline in honeybees, which humans store and truck around the country to provide honey and pollination services, through careful management. But bumblebees and other native species do not get the same sort of commercial attention, even though their “buzz pollination” technique, in which they shake pollen loose by buzzing their wings, is particularly effective at fertilizing plants.

It may not be easy to repopulate the rusty patched bumblebee. The creatures must contend with shrinking habitat, climate change and pesticide use.

Even so, at least the federal government will no longer delay the effort – assuming, that is, Republicans refrain from defunding it in their next budget.

There will be some time devoted to quiet adoration, and some time for communal prayers and readings. Adoration and confession will be from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be sung at 2:30 p.m. Worship aids will be available.

The Spanish-speaking community of St. Mary will have a holy hour from 3 to 4 p.m., followed by Mass in Spanish at

4 p.m. During the holy hour, the rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be recited in Spanish.

People can gain a plenary indulgence for themselves or a deceased person by celebrating Divine Mercy Sunday, going to Confession and receiving Holy Communion. So by attending the prayer service/celebration, they may actually receive two indulgences (for two different people).

DAWC to host talk on issues affecting women’s health DAILY CHRONICLE Heather Vandeburg will give a presentation on women’s health issues at various ages at a talk at 7 p.m. Friday at the DeKalb Area Women’s Center, 1021 State St. in DeKalb.

The talk is part of “Women’s Journey Through Conventional, Complimentary, and Alternative Health Care,” a series organized by DAWC. Vandeburg will discuss how traditional Chinese medicine can be a good treatment option for many women’s health issues. She will cover premenstrual syndrome, painful periods, infertility, hormone imbalances, endometriosis and excessive uterine bleeding. She will discuss what people

can do for various types of pain, dryness, thinning skin, hot flashes, night sweats and wrinkles. She will give a demonstration of acupuncture at the end of the talk.

Vandeburg is state licensed and a board certified practitioner of acupuncture. She has a Bachelor of Science in biology and nutrition and a master’s degree in oriental medicine from The Midwest College of Oriental Medicine. She also has completed a medical internship and certification from the Guang Zhou University in Guangzhou China.

Each year, up to 10 $1,000 scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors who exhibit a strong sense of community pride and are highly involved in volunteer and community service activities. Applicants should

have demonstrated characteristics of citizenship, commitment, ambition, determination, organization, generosity and caring.

Involvement in community service during high school may include activities such as community beautification and cleanup projects; working with senior citizens; helping the homeless; volunteering for the local fire department, rescue squad and/or

hospital; or donating time to a library, animal shelter or park district. It also may include organized activities such as Habitat for Humanity, 4-H, Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, or church activities.

Sycamore student takes part in Chicago Youth in Music Festival DAILY CHRONICLE Sycamore High School music student Kjelden Breidenbach was selected via audition to represent Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra at the 2017 Chicago Youth in Music Festival in February at Orchestra Hall in Chicago.

Breidenbach was honored to perform in the festival for a second time.

According to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra website, the Chicago Youth in Music Festival is a celebration of young classical musicians from across the Chicago area.

The musicians participated in coachings with CSO and Civic Orchestra professionals as well as preparatory rehearsals with Jay Friedman, music director of the Symphony of Oak Park & River Forest. The festival culminated with a public open rehearsal of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 36, under the baton of Maestro Riccardo Muti.

On March 19, the Mayfield Congregational Church Sunday School welcomed four visitors and learned more about Kenya and the school that the church supports. Children and adults gathered with friends Teresa Wasonga, Andrew Otieno and Revela Odhuno from the Jane Adeny Memorial School (JAMS) in Kenya and Joyce Masso, a Swahili teacher from Tanzania. There were stories of the school to hear, pictures to see and words in Swahili to learn. In April, the children will create a scrapbook with information about their lives in DeKalb County and with greetings to the students at JAMS. School founder/directors Wasonga and Otieno will take the scrapbook with them to JAMS this summer.

Johnson finished with a no-hitter, and the Bobcats had a big second inning to provide the cushion in a 10-0 win over the Timberwolves in six innings Thursday afternoon.

“He’s a returner and an All-Stater, and he’s the guy we go to in the big games,” Somonauk coach Troy Felton said. “He goes out there and doesn’t show any emotion. He just pitches and throws the game.”

Johnson allowed two walks and struck out 10 – including a stretch in which he fanned seven Timberwolves in a row – on 89 pitches.

“He did pitch really well,” Indian Creek coach Kevin Poterek said. “He changed up his speeds and his eye level, and he had us guessing up there.

I think we might have overthought some at-bats, but we’re going to have to change something up for [Friday].”

The Timberwolves (1-3, 1-1 Little Ten Conference) had their best chance to score in the bottom of the fourth.

Austin Sommerfeld drew a one-out walk and stole second base – the only time in the game the Timberwolves had a runner in scoring position – and Trevor Guerra’s potential run-scoring line drive was caught by Somonauk third baseman Nolan Wegener.

Indian Creek sophomore Raymond Ragan also drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth, but Johnson retired the next two batters to close out the no-hitter.

Jordan Morris picked up the loss for the Timberwolves, surrendering nine runs on five hits in five innings and 103 pitches, but he also struggled with control in some spots and hit a batter with a pitch four times.

“You can tell it’s early still and it’s his second time out there,” Poterek said. “He was hitting some spots, but he’d lose some control of some pitches here and there.”

Ragan got out of a jam late in the top of the sixth in relief. He came in with the Timberwolves trailing, 100, and the bases loaded with one out, but forced an infield fly and struck out

The Bobcats (5-1, 1-0 LTC) blew open the game by scoring four runs in the bottom of the second to go ahead, 5-0 – thanks to a two-run double by Brady Kreiter and an RBI single by Johnson.

“That was the momentum-changer early,” Poterek said. “You could tell [Somonauk] fed off that, and the pitcher fed off that.”

By the numbers: All of Indian Creek’s outs didn’t leave the infield. Johnson forced four groundouts, three pop ups and one line out.

Beyond the stats: The game orig-

inally was scheduled to be played at Somonauk – with the te game Friday to be played at Indian Creek – but the field was unplayable, so the game was moved to Shabbona. Amazingly, Indian Creek’s all-dirt infield held up despite the heavy rain Wednesday.

They said it: “Our athletic director, Ehren Mertz, did a great job this morning,” Poterek said. “The field wasn’t too bad, and he did what he needed to do to make it playable. I don’t think it threw us off with the schedule change.”

PHILADELPHIA – Aesthetics were given the night off Thursday.

All that mattered to the Bulls was they scored more points than Philadelphia.

Style points, shooting percentages, rebound differential? All meaningless with three games left in the regular season and the Bulls doing all they can to keep a tight grip on an Eastern Conference playoff spot.

Thanks to a 102-90 win over a sinking 76ers team at the Wells Fargo Center, the Bulls did just that, improving to 39-40 and holding down the No. 7 spot.

Even with Indiana beating Milwaukee, all that changed was the Pacers (39-40) moved into the No. 8 spot with Miami idle.

The Bulls own the tiebreaker over both Miami and Indiana, so were sitting in a good spot with a schedule made up of two games against Brooklyn – home and home – and a game with Orlando.

No wonder Jimmy Butler was all smiles after the game.

Maybe his fourth career triple-double also had something to do with it, as the three-time All-Star scored 19 points, while also handing out 10 assists and 10 rebounds.

“We don’t care how we do it,” Butler said of the latest victory. “We don’t care how many points we score, how

“I know if Bobby smacks my hand like that again we’re going to go toe-totoe,” Butler said loudly after the game, so Portis could hear it.

Besides the triple-double from Butler, Mirotic chipped in 22 points, while Portis had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Next stop for the Bulls and their final push is Saturday in Brooklyn, where they could have Dwyane Wade (right elbow) back in the mix in time for the playoffs.

“Even though we’re playing good right now without him, if we’re going to make the playoffs without D-Wade, we don’t have any chance,” Mirotic said. “I can tell you that right now. We need D-Wade; we need his experience.

He knows how to play those games. We don’t have much experience, and we’re going to need him, and he’s working so hard to get back.”

Timetable for Rondo’s return uncertain

jcowley@suntimes.com PHILADELPHIA – Rajon Rondo wasn’t about making promises or playing trainer Thursday.

That’s just not his style.

“When I can still make an impact on the game is when I’ll play again,” the veteran guard said very matter-of-factly. “Everything happens for a reason.

Control what you can control. That’s how life is.”

So much for a definite timetable for his return.

Rondo, who injured his right wrist Tuesday in the loss to New York, was hopeful to return against Philadelphia until an MRI revealed that the wrist was indeed sprained, and he would have to sit. Not only did he miss the game with the 76ers, but with only

three regular-season games left, he couldn’t say for sure when he would be back.

“Just taking it one hour at a time,” Rondo said. “It’s a ligament that’s kind of not in the right place right now. It’s causing it to pop a little bit.”

Not exactly the noise a point guard wants to hear coming from his wrist, especially a point guard as handsy as Rajon Rondo Rondo.

“A lot of it is based on feel, and with Rajon, he’s got the ball in his hands, flinging passes, there’s still some soreness with all those movements,” coach Fred Hoiberg said. “All we know is he’s out [Thursday].”

Hoiberg, however, couldn’t say whether that would be the same starting lineup if Rondo were to miss multiple games.

“It hurts, it’s painful,” Rondo said.

“It’s my dominant hand. So just taking a day at a time.”

The other alpha: There was no progress made in the Dwyane Wade return, as the team made the decision to give Wade a rest day, and not get him a workout during the shootaround.

Wade, who has missed 11 games since dislocating his right elbow in a March 15 loss to Memphis, participated in the Wednesday practice and experienced general soreness when he woke up Thursday.

“It easier when he’s out there,” Butler said of the idea of having Wade back in the mix. “He makes my job a lot easier, as well as everybody else’s.”

Mental game: Butler never has minded being a heavy-minutes guy, entering the game against Philadelphia fourth in the league this season with 37.1 minutes a game, but the three-time All-Star has been playing with an injured left hand throughout the second half of the season, as well as dealing with other small dings to the body.

“I don’t think anybody cares if I’m nicked up, if I’m hurt,” Butler said.

“Nicked up or not, everybody is at this point and time in the season. The really good players deal with it and go out there and win games.”

Cooper: ‘Hard to watch’ Sale now

CHICAGO – White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper watched Chris Sale make his debut with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.

And Cooper had to admit it: Seeing the former White Sox ace in another uniform didn’t sit so well.

“I did see Sale a little bit,” Cooper said before the Sox routed the Tigers, 11-2, Thursday to even their record at 1-1.

“And it’s hard to watch. It’s actually hard to watch.”

Cooper, who had Sale under his wing from the time the Sox drafted him in the first round in 2010 to the time they traded him away in December, has called the left-hander the most talented pitcher he has had. So it was tough to see him go.

Sale was traded for four prospects, and some pretty good ones at that. But after his first outing at Fenway Park, he reminded everyone why he was worth the price. The five-

“He’s still good,” Cooper said. “Somebody from the Boston papers [asked] me, ‘Do you think he’s going to be OK in Boston.’ I said if his fastball is still there, his changeup is still there and his breaking ball, I think he’ll fit in nicely. And he did really good.

“But it actually was a little difficult to watch.”

Cooper did mention that.

He said he hasn’t talked to Sale since spring training.

“It’s hard because he’s in the East, and we are busy doing our thing, and he’s busy doing his thing,” Cooper said. “It was the same way with (Mark) Buehrle and anybody that leaves. There are a lot of guys who leave over the years.”

Some are easier to part ways with than others. Cooper was asked whether seeing Sale at his Cy Young-caliber best made it all the more difficult.

“No, it’s not. It wouldn’t be easier to watch if he was getting whacked,” he said. “I’m

pulling for him to do well.

What’s hard to watch is him doing it in a Boston uniform.

It happens. It happened before with other guys, but this is the first time I’ve actually seen it in a game. You know, it was just hard. It was just hard to watch.’’

Sale is stoked to be pitching for a contender with legit postseason hopes. The Sox failed to play .500 ball for four straight seasons with him and Jose Quintana in their rotation, so they changed course and unloaded Sale to build for the future. For Cooper and most everybody in the Sox organization – and general manager Rick Hahn has admitted as much – therein lies the underlying pain of watching Sale continue to soar: You had Chris Sale, a bona fide ace to build a championship rotation around, and felt moved to get rid of him.

And so the Sox hang their hat on prospects such as second baseman Yoan Moncada, right-handers Michael Kopech

and Victor Diaz and center fielder Luis Basabe, who they got for Sale. And the three good pitching prospects they received from the Nationals for Adam Eaton.

Moncada, a consensus top three prospect in all of baseball, opened his season Thursday night at Triple-A Charlotte. Kopech, one of the most intriguing right-handers in all of minor league baseball, is at Double-A Birmingham.

“The guys we ended up getting in return are significant returns,” manager Rick Renteria said Thursday. “Obviously, they’re not in the big leagues right now, and everybody always talks about you’re trading out an established, solid, AllStar major leaguer. For us, the hope is the guys we get in return are significant and they’re going to impact us in a big way here in the near future.”

The Sox are looking in that direction. For Cooper, who poured into guys such as Sale, turning the page will take some time.

Shields strong in Renteria’s 1st win with Sox

CHICAGO – The wait was worth it for the White Sox, who evened their record to 1-1 in a big way by clobbering the Tigers, 11-2, Thursday for their first victory after trudging through two rainouts and a loss in Rick Renteria’s first week as manager.

Behind two homers from catcher Geovany Soto, a homer and triple from designated hitter Matt Davidson and a solid start from right-hander James Shields, the Sox built a 9-1 lead after four innings and enjoyed a laugher on a cold and windy yet sunny afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Shields (1-0), a career-worst 6-19 with a 5.85 ERA between the Padres and Sox last season, worked through five walks and allowed one run – a Tyler Collins homer in the second – over 51/3 innings, allowing two hits and striking out five.

“I was actually a little erratic, to be honest with you,” Shields said, “but I kept them off-balance when I could and got a few pop-ups today when we needed

it. And the boys scored some runs or me.”

With the wind blowing out at 23 mph to start the game, Shields managed to keep the ball in the park. Soto, who like Davidson did not start in the Sox’ 6-3 season-opening loss to the Tigers on Tuesday, got the nod against left-hander Matthew Boyd, and responded with his first multihomer game since he played for the Cubs in 2011, going deep to James Shields left in the third inning and to center in the seventh against lefty Justin Wilson.

Davidson tripled off the right-field fence in the second against Boyd and hit a hanging changeup from Anibal Sanchez 428 feet to left in the fourth.

Soto and Davidson combined for seven RBIs, four by Soto.

“I’m here to do anything they want me to do,” Soto said. “I’m here to play.

I’m here to win. I’m here to work.”

Davidson broke his foot rounding first when he was called up from Triple-A last year. His first game since

will be a better memory.

“There will be a lot of firsts this year,” he said, “traveling, getting a full season and not a call-up, so I’m just excited and ready to enjoy the ride.”

Shields tipped his cap to teammates for staying focused through the rainouts and coming ready to play. Aside from mislplayed fly balls by Avisail Garcia and Leury Garcia in the outfield, Renteria was satisfied with execution that included two double plays.

“I’m very happy that it’s in the books,” Renteria said of his first win.

Petricka on DL; Kahnle recalled: Righthander Jake Petricka was placed on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to Wednesday) with a strained right lat, and right-hander Tommy Kahnle was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte.

Petricka, 28, pitched a scoreless inning in the opener Tuesday.

“After we took him out, he came in after and said he was a little sore,” Renteria said.

Kahnle, 27, was 0-1 with a 2.63 ERA in 29 relief appearances last season. He pitched a scoreless ninth Thursday.

ST. LOUIS – The strangest play anybody in the Cubs’ clubhouse had seen turned into one of the more important of the Cubs’ victory over the Cardinals on Thursday, even if Kyle Schwarber’s big home run overshadowed it three batters later.

“Sometimes you think you’ve seen it all, and then baseball shows you that you haven’t seen it all,” Cubs right fielder Jason Heyward said.

After pinch-hitter Matt Szczur swung through a Brett Cecil pitch leading off the seventh, the ball eluded catcher Yadier Molina, and Szczur took off for first.

He reached safely as Molina eventually discovered the ball stuck to the front of his chest protector – apparently held there by pine tar.

“No, that’s new,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said when asked about the strangeness. “I don’t know if they’ve come out with Velcro on the protectors

Jon Jay followed Szczur with a single, and Schwarber followed with a firstpitch homer to give the Cubs the lead.

“I’ve never seen that before,” said Schwarber, a catcher through his career. “That’s pretty crazy. I don’t know how that happens.”

Any theories?

“I’ll pass,” he said.

Thinking ahead: The way the Dodgers set up their rotation, the Cubs won’t see perennial Cy Young favorite Clayton Kershaw in their home-opening series next week.

But the Cubs made sure to rearrange their rotation to match up best with the lefty-dominant Dodgers lineup, moving up right-hander Jake Arrieta to pitch Sunday in Milwaukee and pushing lefthander Jon Lester to Monday’s home opener.

“We’re just going based on handedness,” Maddon said. “This was so obvious we just couldn’t walk away from it.”

Because of off days, it puts Arrieta on his natural fifth day against the predominantly right-handed Brewers. Lester pitches on his eighth day, followed in the series by right-hander John Lackey and lefty Brett Anderson.

The move also keeps Lester away, for now, from the Brewers, the team that has been most aggressive in trying to ex-

ploit his troubles throwing to bases the past two years.

Who’s left? Maddon said the Cubs have no immediate plans to make a roster move to add a lefty to the bullpen for the Dodgers series. They opened the season with left-hander Brian Duensing on the disabled list because of continuing recovery from back stiffness, choosing instead to keep an extra bench player.

That leaves Mike Montgomery as the only lefty in the pen. But the two starters mitigate the need.

And, Maddon said, “We like (righty Koji) Uehara as a lefty. I like (righty Justin) Grimm as a lefty. And [righty Carl Edwards Jr.’s] cutter’s really good against lefties.”

Stay-cation: The Cubs finally were allowed to leave St. Louis after Thursday’s rescheduled series finale against the Cardinals, six days after they arrived from Houston.

“We’re concluding our second spring training,” Maddon said. “We had one in Arizona and one in Missouri.”

ST. LOUIS – When Kyle Schwarber got done with the first pitch he saw from left-hander Brett Cecil in the seventh inning Thursday, the Cardinals – and anyone else watching – knew what the Cubs were talking about all spring when they touted Schwarber as their new-age leadoff hitter.

“There’s a lot of lineups that are probably bunting right there with their leadoff guy,” pitcher John Lackey said. “Our guy’s trying to hit it in the seats. It’s a little bit different.”

Schwarber turned on Cecil’s first pitch for a no-doubt, three-run homer down the right field line to give the Cubs the lead in a 6-4 victory at Busch Stadium that turned into a rain-extended, weeklong, season-opening series victory over the rival Cardinals – setting a tone, if not painting a picture, of how the Cubs hope to go about business in their championship defense this year.

Schwarber is at the center of that picture – by his mere presence, never mind his presence as Dexter Fowler’s replacement in the leadoff spot.

That much was made clear by what manager Joe Maddon called a particularly “raucous” postgame celebration Thursday, with teammates singling out Schwarber for more than just the mam-

Johnson out; Hoffman soars

AUGUSTA, Ga. – In the toughest opening round at the Masters in 10 years, it all felt so easy to Charley Hoffman.

For the better part of three hours, in a ferocious wind that made the Georgia pines creak, he had the right yardage for the perfect club to hit every shot he wanted. And then he made the putts, so many that it felt as though he never missed.

Hoffman made seven birdies over his last 11 holes for a 7-under-par 65.

It was 10 shots better than the average score Thursday at Augusta National.

His four-shot lead was the largest for the opening round at the Masters in 62 years.

“For lack of any better words,” Hoffman said, “it was a dream.”

It was even more surreal for Dustin Johnson.

He didn’t even get to play.

Johnson, No. 1 in the world and playing the best golf of his life, was a few minutes away from his tee time when his head overruled his heart. He left the practice green and took a sharp turn away from the first tee toward the clubhouse to withdraw because of a freak injury to his back.

“My heart is in it and wants to play,” he said. “The more I thought about it, I just wasn’t going to have a chance.”

Johnson still was trying to digest the past 24 hours, as shocking as any for a No. 1 player going into a major. He was in his rental home Wednesday when he went to move his car in a downpour because his 2-year-old son was on his way back from day care. Wearing only socks, he slipped on the hardwood steps and crashed onto his left elbow and lower back, calling for his brother to help him up.

Even as he tried to warm up Thursday, he slowly shook his head because of the pain he felt when he struck the ball.

“To have a freak accident happen, it [stinks],” Johnson said. “It [stinks] really bad.”

Not having Johnson around didn’t make the Masters any easier.

With gusts approaching 40 mph, Hoffman and Masters newcomer William McGirt (69) were the only players to break 70.

Hoffman didn’t have reason to believe he would be one of them. He three-putted his third hole for bogey.

He three-putted the fifth hole for bogey, both putts affected by the wind.

“After that, I can’t remember missing a putt,” Hoffman said.

Hoffman’s four-shot lead was the largest at the Masters for the opening round since Jack Burke Jr. had a fourshot lead in 1955.

Lee Westwood, who has the credentials as the best player never to have won a major, ran off five straight birdies late in the afternoon and salvaged a 70. Only eight other players broke par, a group that included Phil Mickelson, Olympic gold medalist Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia.

Rory McIlroy, needing only a green jacket to complete the career Grand Slam, used a nifty short game to stay in the mix. He saved two tough pars after missing the green in the wrong spots on Nos. 10 and 11, ran off three birdies in the middle of the back nine, and closed with another good par save for a 72.

The wind was so strong that it blew golf balls about 6 feet on the greens as Adam Scott and defending champion Danny Willett were getting ready to putt.

The par-5 15th hole, historically the easiest at Augusta National, was the ninth hardest because of strong gusts and a back pin. No need to explain that to Jordan Spieth. One shot spun back into the water. Another shot went well over the green. He made a quadruple-bogey 9 and shot 75.

“If you catch the wrong gust at the wrong time, then you look stupid, like I did on 12,” Thomas Pieters said. “But that’s just Augusta, I guess.”

26 Link between cellphone use, cancer tenuous Dear Doctor: I’ve heard that cellphones increase the risk of brain tumors – and also that they don’t. Which is true?

Dear Reader: First, let’s look at brain tumors in general. They are classified as either benign or malignant, meaning cancerous. The most common type of benign brain tumor is a meningioma, which arises from the meninges, the outer lining of the brain and spinal cord. The most common type of malignant brain tumor is a glioma, which arises from glial cells that line the individual nerve cells.

Ionizing radiation from nuclear accidents or explosions, radiation therapy, or even too-frequent dental X-rays can increase the risk of brain tumors. This type of radiation can lead to mutations within the DNA, increasing the risk of tumor cells.

Cellphones and cordless phones, on the other hand, emit radiofrequency energy, a form of non-ionizing radiation. This type of radiation has little potential to cause DNA damage. From that perspective, because cellphones produce non-ionizing radiation, their risk of cancer should be pretty low.

Now let’s check out the data.

A 2015 Swedish study in the Journal Oncology Reports looked at meningiomas diagnosed between 1997 and 2009. People with meningiomas filled out questionnaires asking about their use of cellphones, home cordless phones and analog phones (phones attached to a wire). The authors also asked whether the patients had placed the phone toward one ear or the other, or used both ears equally.

The authors found no statistical difference between cellphone use and cordless phone use when compared to analog phones.

However, those with the greatest amount of cordless and cellphone use had a higher rate of meningiomas compared to those with the lowest amount of cordless and cellphone use.

The interesting aspect of this is that those who frequently used analog phones

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley also had more meningiomas than those who used analog phones less frequently. So this research carries the possibility of recall bias, in which someone with a disease may overly represent a possible risk factor.

A 2017 analysis of many studies, published in the journal Neurological Sciences, found no overall association between cellphone use and brain tumors. Rather, the authors found many studies on the topic were methodologically flawed.

The authors did note that the higher-quality studies showed a correlation between cellphone use and brain tumors. The authors also concluded that in the higher-quality studies, long-term use of mobile phones was linked to an increase in the risk of brain tumors. Long-term use was defined as greater than 10 years, or more than 1,640 hours.

Another 2017 analysis, published in the International Journal of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health, reached a similar conclusion.

It’s difficult to make judgments based on this data. There does appear to be some evidence that more than 10 years of cellphone use may increase the risk of brain tumors.

Yet the potential for recall bias means the data aren’t irrefutable. Nonetheless, I would recommend being conscious of the amount of time you spend with a cellphone or a cordless phone against your head. Luckily, we can now communicate through a Bluetooth device, reducing whatever risk there may be.

About seven months ago I met a nice guy.

We saw each other for about five months, then out of nowhere, he broke things off. I was devastated. He said his reason for the breakup was “he needed time to find himself.” He was recently divorced and has sole custody of his kids. He has been under a great deal of stress and started seeing a therapist a couple of months ago.

I understand why he needs this time, but I also wish he would let me help. He said he wants to remain friends. I avoided contact with him for several weeks, but now I am drawn back to him. My friends keep telling me to forget him, but I can’t get him off my mind. We talk almost daily and have even gotten together again a couple of times. I keep telling myself all the reasons it won’t work.

Once, an opponent of mine almost tore his cards in two when his partner removed a penalty double of a vulnerable four-spade contract (which would have cost 1,400) to five clubs.

More often, though, when we discuss bridge losers, we are talking about tricks that we might concede.

Often, our job is to eliminate a loser or two. In this deal, for example, how should South play to make four hearts after West leads the club queen?

Three diamonds was a help-suit game-try, asking North to look at his red suits. Here, North was rightly optimistic. He had two sure tricks, a diamond shortage and four trumps.

When this deal was played in a social game, South won the first trick, drew two rounds of trumps and gave up a diamond trick. But East won and cashed his high heart. The contract could no longer be made.

Declarer started with five losers: one spade, one heart and three diamonds. He had to play to ruff two diamonds in the dummy.

Some variation in this trick sequence is all right, but South should play the ace and another diamond (or duck a diamond). Suppose East wins and shifts to the spade king.

Declarer plays low, takes the next spade, cashes his high hearts and the diamond ace, then ruffs a diamond on the board. East overruffs, but declarer trumps the next spade, ruffs his last diamond and claims.
