Unofficial results calculate about 23.5 percent turnout

Bob Hadley, an election judge for DeKalb’s 14th Precinct, noticed that voter turnout for Tuesday’s consolidated elections was steady but slow.

“Turnout was somewhere between a stream and a trickle all day,” Hadley said. He added jokingly, “I don’t know, maybe if we offered doughnuts or coffee it would draw more people.”

Polls were open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 40 voting locations throughout DeKalb County.

This year, more people voted than in previous years of consolidated elections. According to unofficial returns, 14,528 people had voted at the polls by late Tuesday, with all of the county’s 65 precincts reporting. According to DeKalb County Clerk Doug Johnson’s office, 61,914 people were registered to vote in DeKalb County this year.

The unofficial voter turnout at the polls was 23.46 percent. Voter turnout for the consolidated election in 2015 was 8 percent; in 2013 it was 22 percent, and in 2011 it was 12 percent.

Voters also could register before voting Tuesday at three registration centers: the DeKalb Township Building in DeKalb, Northern Illinois University’s Holmes Student Center and the Sycamore Administration Building in Sycamore. Unofficially, 60 people registered

to vote at the polls.

Johnson said voting turnout was “good,” with many people voting after work between 5 and 6 p.m. Johnson correctly predicted a higher voter turnout because of the contested mayoral races in DeKalb, Cortland and Sycamore and the contested village president races in Kirkland and Waterman.

“I’m happy with the voter turnout, but we could always do better,” Johnson said. “The election process went smoothly, thanks to staff and the election judges.”

According to unofficial counts of early voting, which closed at 4:30 p.m. Monday, 2,087 people, or 3.37 percent of voters, voted early. The five early voting locations included sites in DeKalb, Kirkland, Sandwich, Sycamore and at NIU. “This year, the early-voting numbers were not where we’d like to seem them,” Johnson said. “In consolidated elections, voters usually come in to vote the day of the election, rather than taking advantage of early voting.”

Kadie Threloff of DeKalb’s 13th Precinct said she was surprised how few people were voting at Hopkins Park Terrace Room in DeKalb.

“Voting is important to me, especially since I was unhappy with the most recent election’s results,” Threloff said. “I wanted to have my voice heard, because these topics, like taxes and the mayor, affect my life every day.”

Voters elect Jerry Smith new leader Patrick Fagan named alderman; Finucane retains Ward 2 seat

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Voters determined that change in DeKalb leadership was needed by electing Jerry Smith as Mayor and Patrick Fagan as 4th Ward alderman Tuesday.

Unofficial results show Smith receiving 47.97 percent of the vote with Misty Haji-Sheikh receiving 19.21 percent, incumbent Mayor John Rey receiving 19.13 percent and Michael Embrey receiving 13.69 percent.

Smith has said during his campaign that in his first 100 days of service, he plans to be laser-focused on economic development, engage with law enforcement agencies to ensure public safety and investigate how DeKalb can retain younger residents coming out of high school and college, amongst other goals.

“I could not be more proud of the way we took the high road and were able to take our positive message to the residents of DeKalb,” Smith said.

“There’s much to be done in the coming weeks, months and years. DeKalb is a wonderful place with wonderful folks, and we must work together to make it an even better community.”

“I look forward to working with Jerry on what I would anticipate would be a very smooth transition orienting him to a number of projects and making sure the momentum of those projects continue as he assumes the office,” Smith said.

Haji-Sheikh said she called Smith to congratulate him and will now continue her commitment to the DeKalb County Board.

“I want to thank every person who voted for me, worked for me or supported me in any way, and I want them to know that I’m going to keep working hard,” Haji-Sheikh said. “I tried

to run a tight, effective, issue-driven campaign.”

Embrey said the election showed that people wanted change, and city government will have a new future now.

“I hope DeKalb is ready for a new direction, and it’s time for everyone to step up,” Embrey said. “I did want the mayor job, but I’m committed to the community in bringing events to town and creating additional activities.”

In the City Council races, Patrick Fagan won the open 4th Ward Alderman seat with 38.55 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results, beating sitting Alderman Bob Snow and challenger Michael Bauling.

“I plan to be in more contact with people in the 4th Ward,” Fagan said.

“We need to keep property taxes in line without increases and also make sure that all of the information is researched before we make a decision on anything.”

Second Ward Alderman Bill Finucane retained his seat over his opponent, William Lamb.

“We need to continue to reach out to do some commercial economic development, but we can’t forget residential development,” Finucane said. “For the ward, I’d like to see some of the public transit issues resolved on the southwest side by University Village.”

Mike Verbic, who was running unopposed in the 6th Ward after Michael “Max” Maxwell withdrew, will replace retiring Alderman Dave Baker.

Hallgren, Pena-Hernandez, Newport elected to board

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The widely contested race for three open seats on the DeKalb School District 428 Board saw Jeff Hallgren, Valerie Pena-Hernandez and incumbent President Victoria Newport leading the large group of candidates.

Hallgren received 2,558 votes, Pena-Hernandez had 2,326 and Newport tallied 2,266, according to unofficial election results.

“It’s an honor, and I feel extreme-

ly grateful. There were nine amazing candidates who all had a lot to bring to the table,” Pena-Hernandez said. “As minorities, we have to have a voice in our children’s education.

I plan to bring representation from minorities to the district so we can embrace the power of the various cultures we have here in DeKalb.”

The three were among nine active candidates vying for the seats. A 10th candidate, Scott Campbell, withdrew from the race in March, throwing his support to Pena-Hernandez, Shatoya Black and Twangie Smith; however

his name still appeared on the ballot.

The remaining candidates received these vote totals, according to unofficial results: Jeromy Olson, 1,541; Tracy Williams, 1,498; Catherine (Kay) Harned, 1,346; Shatoya Black, 1,270; Sean Johnson, 897; C Scott (Clyde) Campbell, 839; and Twangie Smith, 639.

The new board will be tasked with finding a replacement for former Superintendent Doug Moeller, DeKalb High School Principal Michelle Albano and Human Resources Director Jim Bormann.

Moeller went on paid administrative leave after Albano requested an order of protection from him last September.

The order was allowed to expire when Albano failed to show up in court in October.

The board approved a final separation agreement with Moeller in February.

Albano and Bormann were hired under one-year contracts, which were not renewed.

Hallgren and Newport could not be reached for comment at press time.

New leadership with Lang, Kalk

Sycamore voters have elected Curt Lang as their new leader.

Lang, currently a 1st Ward Alderman, defeated two other experienced candidates in Tuesday’s consolidated election to become the next mayor of Sycamore.

Lang earned 1,376 votes (44.94 percent), while Candy Smith, Sycamore city clerk and former alderman, earned 1,095 votes (35.76 percent) and 4th Ward Alderman Rick “Spider” Kramer earned 591 votes (19.3 percent), according to unofficial election results.

Lang said his business experience and having lived in Sycamore for 40 years are key factors that got him elected.

He said his first initiative will be to work with the City Council and city manager to establish goals to make Sycamore a better place.

“I’m going to try to be a good communicator,” Lang said. “That’s not necessarily a change, but I believe it is the secret to success as an elected official.”

Lang, who has lived in Sycamore since 1976, has been a 1st Ward alderman for six years. He manages Courtview Dental Center in Sycamore and also is a property developer.

SYCAMORE – Four candidates were elected Tuesday to serve four-year terms as members on the Sycamore School District 427 board.

Three candidates competed for two seats representing Sycamore Township: Eric Jones, a current board member, Jason Hulst and Jeff Jacobson.

Jones and Jacobson were elected to the two positions, with Jones receiving 2,398 votes (24.25 percent) and Jacob-

son receiving 2,146 votes (21.7 percent), according to unofficial results. Hulst received 1,512 votes (15.29 percent), according to unofficial results.

Jim Dombek, current board president, ran unopposed to maintain his seat representing Mayfield Township, and Austin Hofer ran unopposed to fill a seat on the board representing Cortland Township.

Dombek earned 2,255 votes (22.8 percent), while Hofer brought in 1,579 votes (15.97 percent), according to unofficial results.

All four board members elected Tuesday will serve four-year terms expiring in May 2021.

The board consists of seven members, and no more than three can be elected from any one township.

Stokes re-elected as Cortland town president

CORTLAND – Russell Stokes won re-election Tuesday as Cortland’s town president, besting challenger Charmaine

Fioretto.

Stokes had 288 votes to 278 for Fioretto, according to unofficial vote totals.

In the race for town board, Michael Siewierski, Jim Walker and Richard Robins were elected from a field of six candidates. Siewierski was the leading vote-getter with 241, Walker had 230 and Robins had 223.

The race for town clerk saw Cheryl Aldis elected with 288 votes, defeating Cherie Quillman with 260.

About 5 years ago, the depression and anxiety shop teacher at Brodhead High School before beginning his long career at Knight Manufacturbecame more than he could bear. She was born January 6, 1945, in Charleston, SC. The daughter of John and Leona (Ring) Gailbreath.

She married Ralph Townsend on September 20th, 2012.

She had her children, Kimberly (Trent) Snowden of Bettendorf; her son, Cory Smith of Chugiak, AK. Stepchildren, Laura Townsend Ermer of Warrenville, and Mark (Renee) Townsend of Brookfield. She has 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Evelyn retired from the University of Northern Illinois on July 1, 2012.

She is survived by her loving husband, Ralph.

Her siblings, William (Marlene) Gailbreath, Kay (Mike) Toorn, and Patti (Wayne) Guinee.

Born December 23, 1922, in New Washington, Indiana, the son of Lawrence and Alta (Powers) Tucker, Warren married June Rose Lofthouse in Sycamore in 1946.

Warren was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during WWII in the Philippines and New Guinea. He received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. Warren was a lifetime truck driver.

He is survived by his son, Thomas (Donna) Tucker Sr. of Crystal Lake; seven grandchildren, Brett (Cindy) Tucker, Tammy (Chris) Laureigh, Jozi (Jeff) Meier, Amy Kroos, Kristen (Clint) Gendusa, Thomas (Jill) Tucker Jr., Dusty (Addie) Storm; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Voters pan county public health tax plan DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – The cause may have been worthy, but in the end, voters on Tuesday lacked the resolve to add any more weight to an already heavy property tax burden for public health services.

A proposal that would have increased property taxes about $9.50 per $100,000 in assessed value to support the DeKalb County Health Department was rejected by a vote of 55.9 percent (7,715 votes) to 44 percent (6,068 votes), according to unofficial returns.

DeKalb County Health Department, Director Lisa Gonzalez did not return a message seeking her reaction to the bill’s defeat and what it will mean for the future of public health services in DeKalb County.

Before the election, Gonzalez said one of her biggest concerns about continuing to reduce staff is that it restricts the department’s ability to respond to a public health emergency. “[The referendum] is not to add staff; it’s not to add services or programs,” she told the Daily Chronicle in March. “It’s really to sustain what we’re currently doing at the level that we’re currently doing it.”

County officials had asked the public for the increase to counteract the effects of shrinking state and federal public health grants, which make up about 40 percent of the health department’s budget.

BRIEFS Voters reject Genoa Township retirement tax

GENOA – A measure to create a new property tax levy for Genoa Township to provide pensions for its employees was rejected.

Voters gave the thumbs-down Tuesday to the proposal by a vote of 459 to 204, according to unofficial returns.

The measure would have increased property tax bills in the township by about $7 for every $100,000 in assessed value, according to the ballot language, and would have generated about $20,000 more a year in tax revenue and allowed the township to join the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund.

Voters rejected a similar proposal in November 2014.

KIRKLAND – A proposal to increase property taxes in order to provide ambulance service for the community was defeated.

Voters rejected the proposal Tuesday by a vote of 435 to 257, according to unofficial returns. The measure would have increased fire district property owners’ tax bills by about $130 a year for every $100,000 in assessed value.

Fire officials said the increase was necessary in order to support ambulance service to the community, upgrade to a paramedic service and replace outdated equipment.

KIRKLAND – Ryan Block prevailed in the three-way race to determine who will succeed Les Bellah as Kirkland’s village president.

As of Tuesday night, Block had 297 votes, ahead of Wanda McMurray with 74 and Harry Newberry with 32, according to unofficial vote totals.

In a five-way race for three seats on the village board, Sarah Ziegler, Colleen Ford and Steven DeVlieger were elected to four-year terms. Ziegler was the leading-vote getter with 214, followed by Ford with 173 and DeVlieger with 154.

Other candidates Ronald Lieving had 107 and Sally Jones garnered with 127.

There were 131 write-in candidate votes.

MALTA – Voters returned three incumbent members of the Kishwaukee College Board of Trustees to office.

Incumbents Robert Johnson, Robert Hammon and Linda Mason were re-elected to new six-year terms Tuesday, besting challenger Donald Young.

Court: 1964 law bans LGBT discrimination

CHICAGO – A federal appeals court ruled for the first time Tuesday that the 1964 Civil Rights Act protects LGBT employees from workplace discrimination, setting up a likely battle before the Supreme Court as gay rights advocates push to broaden the scope of the 53-year-old law.

The 8-to-3 decision by the full 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago comes just three weeks after a threejudge panel in Atlanta ruled the opposite, saying employers aren’t prohibited from discriminating against employees based on sexual orientation.

The 7th Circuit is considered relatively conservative and five of the eight judges in the majority were appointed

by Republican presidents, making the finding all the more notable.

The case stems from a lawsuit by Indiana teacher Kimberly Hively alleging that the Ivy Tech Community College in South Bend didn’t hire her full time because she is a lesbian.

Fed lawmakers: Hiring freeze could hurt Thomson Prison

THOMSON – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos have written a letter to the Department of Justice in an effort to keep a hiring freeze from affecting the Thomson Prison in northwestern Illinois.

Durbin and Bustos sent the letter Monday, saying that the freeze President Donald Trump ordered in January “has already forced the facility to postpone hiring a new class of incoming officers,” the Dixon Telegraph reported.

The lawmakers said that if the Justice Department doesn’t exempt the Bureau of Prisons from Trump’s hiring freeze, Thomson Prison’s goal of accepting inmates by the end of the year may be delayed.

The Chicago ruling came on the anniversary of the assassination of civil rights icon Martin Luther King, whose marches against racism prompted Congress to pass the landmark law.

The debate in the Hively case revolved around the meaning of the word ‘sex’ in Title VII. Other courts have

concluded that Congress meant for the word to refer only to whether a worker was male or female. They said that it would be wrong to stretch the meaning of ‘sex’ in the statute to also include sexual orientation.

The majority of the 7th Circuit sided with a broader meaning.

“Any discomfort, disapproval, or job decision based on the fact that the complainant – woman or man – dresses differently, speaks differently, or dates or marries a same-sex partner, is a reaction purely and simply based on sex.

That means that it falls within Title VII’s prohibition against sex discrimination ...,” writes Judge Diane Wood, a President Bill Clinton appointee.

CHICAGO – A federal judge has given the go-ahead for a lawsuit alleging that a Chicago Police Department “code of silence” allowed a detective to escape punishment for drunken driving.

Off-duty detective Joseph Frugoli’s blood-alcohol content was more than four times the legal limit when his SUV plowed into a disabled vehicle in April 2009, killing two men.

Frugoli had escaped discipline despite being suspected of drunken driving twice before.

Although Buffett is admired and thought of as a folksy straight talker in the U.S., where Coke is based, employing an 86-year-old billionaire to sell sodas in the U.S. would be a tough sell for even the most savvy Madison Avenue marketing firm, even with Buffett’s voracious appetite for Cokes.

Obama aide denies using intel to spy on Trump staff

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Susan Rice, Barack Obama’s national security adviser and the latest target for Donald Trump’s embattled defenders, firmly denied on Tuesday that she or other Obama officials used secret intelligence reports to spy on Trump associates for political purposes.

“Absolutely false,” Rice said.

The White House has seized on the idea that the Obama administration improperly surveilled the Republican during and after the November election – an accusation Democrats say is just another red herring thrown out to distract attention from investigations of Russian interference in the campaign on behalf of Trump.

Presidential spokesman Sean Spicer cast Rice’s handling of intelligence in the waning days of Obama’s term as suspicious, although he did not detail what he found to be inappropriate.

“The more we find out about this, the more we learn there was something there,” Spicer said.

A U.S. official said that Rice asked spy agencies to give her the names of Trump associates who surfaced in intelligence reports she was regularly briefed on. Rice’s official role would have given her the ability to make those requests for national security purposes.

Rice, in an interview with MSNBC, acknowledged that she sometimes asked for the names of Americans referenced in reports. She would not say whether she saw intelligence related to Trump associates or whether she asked for their identities, though she did say that reports related to Russia increased in the final months of the presidential election.

Rice denied that she had leaked details about Flynn’s call, saying, “I leaked nothing to nobody.”

The U.S. official said Rice’s Trump-related requests were discovered as part of a National Security Council review of the government’s policy on “unmasking” – the intelligence community’s term for revealing Americans’ identities that would otherwise be hidden in classified reports. The review was prompted by a belief that there were inefficiencies in the current procedures and concerns over a policy change made in the closing days of the Obama administration, said the official, who insisted on anonymity in order to disclose the sensitive information.

In January, the Justice Department and intelligence officials agreed on new rules giving more U.S. agencies access to raw information picked up abroad by the National Security Agency. Privacy advocates have raised concerns that the new rules – which are yet to be fully implemented – would lead to the information being

shared too broadly.

The unmasking review was led by Ezra Cohen-Watnick, the NSC’s senior director of intelligence. Cohen-Watnick has clashed with the CIA and was on the verge of being moved out of his job until Trump political advisers Steve Bannon and Jared Kushner stepped in to keep him in the role.

Cohen-Watnick raised his findings about Rice with the White House counsel’s office, the official said. The counsel’s office ordered him to stand down because the lawyers did not want the White House to be running an independent investigation into the prior administration.

Still, the White House has appeared to find other ways to promote the idea that Obama officials were conducting improper surveillance of Trump’s team.

In mid-March, House intelligence committee chairman Devin Nunes abruptly announced he had seen “troubling” information about spy agencies widely spreading the identities of Trump associates. The president’s advisers quickly embraced Nunes’ revelations, but did not acknowledge at the time that the congressman had viewed the information at the White House with the help of White House officials.

Trump’s inability to implement policies

Uncertainty over President Donald Trump’s ability to implement his policies has grown further.

The repealing of the U.S. health insurance system, known colloquially as Obamacare, which Trump had touted as one of his campaign pledges, has foundered.

The Republican Party, the force that supports Trump, has been divided over a bill to replace the health care system. Despite the party having a majority in the House of Representatives, prospects for the bill’s passage were dim, leading Republicans to give up taking a vote on the bill on the House floor. This was a blunder putting off a vote on a key policy.

The president is not authorized to submit a budget or other bills to Congress. The president is required to make approaches to Congress for the passage of these bills and make efforts to win support from a wide range of legislators on them. It can hardly be deniable that Trump, who had no political experience, underestimated such a reality and neglected to coordinate views with Congress.

Obamacare was enshrined into law under the previous administration led by President Barack Obama.

In order to reduce the number of uninsured people, which was estimated to total as many as about 50 million, the government and other entities grant subsidies, while making it mandatory for people to be covered by the health care plan. Even those who had been denied coverage on the grounds of their medical history have become eligible for it.

During the presidential campaign last year, Trump criticized Obamacare as bringing about increased fiscal burdens and skyrocketing insurance premiums, and his slogan was “repeal.”

Yet the Republican Party’s hard-line conservatives regarded it problematic that some public subsidies are still kept in place in the replacement bill, saying this would not constitute a repeal of the present program, and opposed the bill.

lious move spread as they were concerned about a possible increase in the number of the uninsured, because of the abolition of mandatory insurance coverage and cuts in subsidies.

The issue of how deep government should get involved in social welfare programs is one that leaves U.S. public opinion divided. This is also at the root of ideological antagonism within the Republican Party.

Trump may have failed to recognize that it would not be easy for the party to unite over this issue.

The building of a wall on the border with Mexico – another of Trump’s campaign pledges – has also been put on hold. House Speaker Paul Ryan has announced that the chamber will put off budgeting for the cost of the work.

It is also inevitable that hard-line conservatives, who attach importance to a balanced budget, would oppose other campaign promises targeted next for approval: large tax cuts, massive infrastructure investments, and higher defense spending.

The state of “indecisive politics,” with Congress not functioning, is likely to continue.

Trump will not be able to retain his supporters if he only issues one executive order after another, which would only negate the previous administration in such areas as a review of global warming measures.

His approval rating has fallen below 40 percent. The rating, just more than two months since taking office, is a record low compared with those of past presidents. The socalled “Trump rally” of higher stock prices and stronger dollar has lost momentum.

These demonstrate the fact that people’s hopes over Trump’s experience as a businessman and his negotiating skills have been betrayed, with his political capability being questioned. Top-priority issues for Trump would be to make up for the delay in his Cabinet appointments and solidify the lineup of policy experts and go-betweens to connect the Cabinet with Congress.

Trump’s proposed tweaking of NAFTA is a ‘disaster’

President Donald Trump campaigned hard against the North American Free Trade Agreement, at one point declaring that the tariff-slashing pact with Canada and Mexico, in effect for 23 years, “has been a disaster for our country” and “has to be totally gotten rid of.”

On another occasion, he pledged “to immediately renegotiate the terms of that agreement to get a better deal for our workers. And I don’t mean just a little bit better, I mean a lot better.” If our neighbors to the north and south did not agree to renegotiate, Trump said, then he would serve notice of American intent to exit the deal.

Now that his administration has revealed its draft NAFTA agenda, in the form of a letter to Congress from the acting U.S. trade representative, it would appear that Trump’s bark had little relationship to his bite. In tone, the document is conciliatory. Its preamble takes note of the extensive trading relationships that have flowered under NAFTA, and speaks of the great “potential ... benefit” to the United States of “improving” it. In substance, it is conventional: a list of implicit but clear allusions to long-standing U.S. concerns such as domestic-content rules for the North American motor vehicle industry and Canada’s protection of its dairy farms.

One controversial point was a reference to “snap back” tariffs as a remedy for undue “import surges” to the United States.

But even that mechanism has precedent in the terms of past trade deals, such as

the ill-fated Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Speaking of TPP, which Trump also denounced, it actually would have accomplished a good deal of what the president now says he wants for the U.S. with respect to Canada and Mexico.

The NAFTA partners agreed, in return for the benefits, economic and strategic, of what they hoped would be a U.S.-led market-building plan spanning a vast region of the world. Now that TPP has died, thanks in no small part to Trump’s attacks on it during 2016, it’s not clear what inducements he can offer Ottawa and Mexico City to make those same concessions again.

Indeed, the president’s hostile and bombastic rhetoric has probably made it more difficult for the NAFTA countries to deal with the U.S., when the talks do commence some months from now.

This is true even where the administration raises valid issues, such as its suggested update to automotive industry domestic-content rules, which may not necessarily reflect new supply chains linking Asia and North America, or the rise of a large Mexican auto industry.

Trump’s campaign protectionism was so over the top that any moderation now is a relief. But the damage from his rhetoric won’t be easily undone. Even by the notoriously demagogic standards of trade politics, Trump’s vilification of NAFTA may set a record for being simultaneously inflammatory and – we now know – hollow.

But I can’t help noting that you seem particularly quick to insult when discussing African Americans.

Remember last year, when you told Trump black people can’t find work because “many of them are ill-educated and have tattoos on their foreheads?”

It was a slander calculated to make nearly 40 million people seem unworthy, not simply of employment, but even of respect.

I’m tempted to respond in kind.

There’s surely no shortage of ammunition.

I could call you a lousy excuse for a reporter who wouldn’t know a fact if it bit him on the butt after a career filled with spectacular errors, including that book of yours that places Abraham Lincoln in the Oval Office – which didn’t exist until 44 years after Lincoln died. (But hey, we all make mistakes.)

I could call you a blustering bully with all the self-control of a guest on “Jerry Springer” after that notorious video of you cursing and berating your crew on the set of “Inside Edition.” (But the little people need to be put in their places from time to time, don’t they?)

I could call you a serial fabulist with delusions of adequacy for all the times you claimed to have been places and experienced things – the murder of nuns in El Salvador, the suicide of a friend of Lee Harvey Oswald – where you were not and that you did not. (But seeing it in a picture is just like being there, right?)

I could call you a paranoiac jackass for that 2007 segment on nonexistent lesbian gangs packing pink pistols, terrorizing straight guys and raping young girls. (But who among us hasn’t wanted to cross the street when we see that Ellen DeGeneres coming?)

Point is, I could insult you, Bill, but I won’t. Instead, I’ll offer some unsolicited advice.

Insults have their place in your rhetorical toolbox. I try to use them sparingly myself – although I admit

the frequency has risen precipitously since Trump came to political prominence. But even at that, it can’t be all insults, all the time.

Name-calling is, after all, no substitute for reasoning. If mockery is the sum total of your argument, your credibility cannot help but suffer.

An observer might even conclude that you insult because you cannot persuade.

There are other tools in that toolbox, Bill: logic, analogy, humor, pathos, irony. Surely you can learn to use some of them to make your case. Heck, you’re Bill-by-GodO’Reilly, one of the most revered figures in the pantheon of American journalism!

I know how it is, however, when you fall in love with a given rhetorical tool. It’s hard to wean yourself from it. You have a weakness for insults.

Me, I feel the same about sarcasm.

To the Editor: Regarding the front-page photo and interview of Steve Rosene, who has a farmette and has opposed the present wind farm in DeKalb County, there needs to be a reality check.

The world is facing a catastrophe because of human use of fossil fuels generating carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Most of Europe is rapidly changing to efficiency, solar, geothermal and wind to get off of oil, coal and natural gas.

I have seen wind turbines everywhere while traveling, many within dense housing areas. Denmark is very close to 90 percent clean energy. New Zealand is 85 percent hydroelectric.

The U.S., as one of the major carbon contributers, promised in the Paris agreement to be a player in saving our planet. Just last fall, the cost of wind and solar became cheaper than oil.

Much of this because China, which is desperate to clean up its air, has flooded world markets with ever-cheaper solar cells. It has also become one of the major manufacturers of wind turbines. I thought I would not see climate change in my lifetime, but it is here and accelerating.

Locally, I was on the DeKalb County Board when we approved the current wind farm. After a 19-hour hearing and an additional one to make sure everyone’s voice was heard, we put over 30 contingen-

cies on the contract that included protection for home values as well as many other concerns.

We DID listen.

The county was then sued several times, at great cost, by owners – mainly of farmettes.

I saw the wind farm as a way for family farmers to get a steady income to be able to stay on their farms. Moreover, I live close to Bethany and Route 23. I hear traffic noises constantly. I hear helicopters landing at the hospital and airplanes coming into O’Hare, DuPage and DeKalb airports.

I feel these noises are part of being in a shared community. How many people die of black lung disease mining coal? How much vital ocean life is being killed by oil spills? How many lives are disrupted by oil pipeline leaks?

Switching to renewable, clean industry is an imperative, and we are not doing it fast enough.

Sycamore ambulance fee hike too steep

nity’s and wanting to bring Sycamore in line with the average surrounding communities is not a good enough argument to support such an increase.

The article states most insurance companies cover ambulance rides, which is simply not true.

The proposed fee hike will put a heavy burden on an individual when they are most vulnerable, especially if the insurance company doesn’t cover it. Generally an ambulance ride leads to mounting medical bills from treatment, so to add such an increase on top of medical bills an individual will most likely incur is unfair.

Ambulances are generally called during life-threatening emergencies, accidents and for the elderly, and I feel the fire department needs to be more sympathetic to that rather than stating they want to be in line with other communities.

Just because other communities gouge their residents doesn’t mean Sycamore has to do it as well.

Our property taxes support ambulance services and the taxes are already high enough, Illinois being among the highest in the nation for property tax.

I hope the City Council finds within it the wherewithal to understand many people in our community simply cannot afford and do not deserve such a rate hike.

Dear Bill O’Reilly: Let’s talk insults.

Me, I like a good put-down as much as the next pundit. Judiciously employed, it can be an effective rhetorical tool, the equivalent of a slam dunk over the defense. You don’t just score, but you also demoralize and embarrass the other team.

Similarly, to drop an insult into a political debate tells us you regard the opponent as so utterly hapless she doesn’t deserve to be taken seriously.

It tells us you consider her arguments so stupid they aren’t even worth refuting You, of course, are a past master of this. Has there ever been an episode of your Fox “News” program where you did not call someone a “pinhead” or a “far-left loon”?

Last week, you attacked Rep. Maxine Waters, D-California. In an appearance on Fox’s morning show, you responded as follows to a clip of her criticizing supporters of Donald Trump: “I didn’t hear a word she said. I was looking at the James Brown wig.”

SYCAMORE – After the Sycamore softball team committed its first error of the game, DeKalb slugger Mallory Warner got her first hit.

As coach Jeff Davis said after the game, timing is everything.

Warner’s two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning gave the Barbs the lead for good, and Torrie Newport got the side in order in both the sixth and seventh as the Barbs topped their rival, 7-3, Tuesday at Sycamore Park.

“Timing is everything, as they say, but just mentally that helped,” Davis said. “It just has to give us a lot of confidence to say, ‘Hey, we can hit with two outs.’ Taking nothing away from their pitcher, I thought she did a really nice job today, but I think we have a nice offensive team, and she did a great job of throwing strikes to them.”

With the score tied a 3, the Barbs had two on with two outs with Erin Karasewski at the plate. She hit a grounder to Haley Trela at short, but Trela bobbled it, allowing the Barbs to load the bases.

Warner, who was 0 for 3 to that point, ripped a single, then Rylee Levine added a two-run single to break open the game.

“That’s the hard part – you didn’t give up any runs necessarily, but you set up their two best hitters with runners on base and nowhere to put them,” Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter said. “They put two good swings together, and then all of a sudden you’re down three or four runs. And that’s tough toward the end of the game.”

Sycamore (3-4-1, 0-1) had been able to get some offense going against DeKalb starter Newport – six hits in the first five innings – but the junior set down the final seven batters in order.

“When we have a lead, it just

gives me a lot more confidence to throw strikes and get ahead on the batters,” Newport said. “It worked.”

The Barbs started the scoring in the second, when Newport singled home Skylar Haring, and Levine added a run-scoring single in the third. The Spartans tied the score in the third when Newport walked the first two batters, then after a bunt, Joslin Peck flew out to center, scoring Trela. Anna Criswell followed by scoring on a passed ball.

The teams traded runs in the fifth – a double by Haring that scored Levine for DeKalb, and a single by Peck to score Criswell for Sycamore.

“I think the game was a lot closer than the final score would indicate,” Carpenter said. “It was a back-and-forth affair until that sixth inning there. We’re still working on things. It’s a winnable

“I was just going into that at-bat looking for a good pitch,” Montavon said. “That sacrifice bunt was huge and got the guys in scoring position, and I got a good pitch to hit.”

Montavon reached third base after the throw from the outfield wound up in the middle of the infield and eventually scored on a passed ball.

By the numbers: The Spartans had only four hits, with singles from Cavanaugh, Mizgalski and Zach Carlsen and a double by Montavon. James Marcinkowski added an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth.

Beyond the stats: Mizgalski had at least two strikeouts in an inning five times. Carlsen had warmed up in the bullpen in the bottom of the sixth and was available to come in for Mizgalski.

They said it: “I think our lineup is pretty deep, and we have a lot of guys who can do a lot of things,” Cavanaugh said.

“I told the kids once we got one, I really think the wins are going to start coming,” Barbs coach PJ Hamilton said. “It was nice to see the back of the net ripple again.”

The Barbs (1-3) got goals from Maddie Hill (41st minute) and Hannah Hickey (45th). Yesenia Ortiz added a goal in the 71st minute for the Barbs.

Hamilton said he also was impressed with the play of goalie Meghan Hanson and the back line, saying they have been the strength of the team this year.

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Saydie Holland accounted for all the offense as Sycamore started Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference girls soccer action Tuesday with a 3-1 win against Yorkville.

“Once I got one in the net, I just wanted to keep it going and not lay off,” Holland said.

Holland opened the scoring in tight traffic in front of the goal off a corner kick at the 16:34 mark in the first half for the Spartans (4-0-2, 1-0).

“We haven’t had a lot of corner kicks, so that was another part of our game plan, that if we beat the person on the edge that we’re going down the sideline to look for corner kicks, to earn them,” Sycamore coach David Lichamer said.

Yorkville (1-2, 1-1) tied the score at the 36-minute mark in the second half with a goal by junior Peyton Willie.

“I was happy with our game plan – keeping an eye on Peyton Willie,” Lichamer said despite her goal. “She’s a really creative, dynamic player, and she can certainly hurt you from anywhere on the field.”

But the tie lasted only a few minutes, with Holland scoring her second goal on a penalty kick at 33:42. “[Penalty kicks are] all mental,” Holland said. “You just want to know where you’re going. We’ve practiced them before. You want to make sure you don’t switch it up.”

Holland completed her hat trick with 28:38 left to go in the game.

“We know Sycamore is a great team, a very skilled team,” Yorkville coach Lauren Anderson said, “so we knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game, but we were looking forward to a well-played game and some good competition.”

By the numbers: Yorkville scored at the 22-minute mark in the second half, but the goal was disallowed because of an offside violation.

Beyond the stats: Before her penalty kick, Holland was stonewalled twice by Yorkville defenders, as the goalie fell out of the play in front of the net.

They said it: “Always being so close to a goal and not making it is frustrating.

Seeing it and hearing it rebound off the girls, I had to look for it to go back in,” Holland said.

SYCAMORE – Sycamore ace Jack Mizgalski was only a few pitches away from being forced to hand the ball to coach Jacob Cavanaugh.

Instead, he finished his first seven-inning no-hitter before he hit the maximum number of pitches a player can throw under a new IHSA rule in the Spartans’ 5-0 victory over Hononegah on Tuesday night at Sycamore Park.

Mizgalski entered the seventh inning having thrown 76 pitches and finished with 99 – six shy of the newly mandated 105-pitch count. The Indians (1-6) loaded the bases in the seventh on a fielding error and two walks before Mizgalski escaped the jam by forcing a groundout to third baseman Logan Riley.

“I wasn’t thinking about the pitch count (in the final inning). I knew I was around 72 or something like that heading into the last inning,” said Mizgalski, who finished with 12 strikeouts.

It was the second time this season the Spartans (6-1) have played a seveninning game – they lost, 9-7, at Burlington Central in the opener – and this

was the first game the new pitch count rule was a factor for the Spartans.

“He kept striking people out. It’s like, just get a grounder and let’s get this over with,” Cavanaugh said of Mizgalski going up against the pitch count. “I wanted to get him to 80 (pitches) anyway going into the game, but then the pitches started to pile up.

It was 80, then it was 85, and then it was 90, and then it was 95. I was like, ‘Just force a double play and get this over with.’ ” The Spartans continued their stretch of putting together big innings offensively, scoring all five of their runs against Hononegah in the fourth inning. It’s the seventh time this season they’ve scored five runs or more in an inning, and they had won their past five games by a combined score of 67-5.

“I think it’s old cliché, hitting is contagious,” said Mizgalski, who reached base in all three plate appearences. “Once you see somebody get a hit, it’s like, ‘OK, why can’t I do that?’ Then you go up and get a hit.

We have a lot of confidence going up there.”

Quintana gets clobbered in opener

CHICAGO – A lot of air already was out of the Opening Day balloon before Jose Quintana’s first pitch Tuesday, what with a rainy day frowning on the White Sox and what would have been a near sellout crowd Monday at newly named Guaranteed Rate Field.

Quintana tried to revive some of that buzz in the delayed opener Tuesday afternoon, and with an assist from leadoff man Tyler Saladino, who singled against Justin Verlander to open the first inning and scored on Melky Cabrera’s double, the 2017 season was off to a nice start.

But then Quintana, of all people, the always steady All-Star performer making his first Opening Day start, got clobbered for five runs in the second inning, taking away what life there was among an estimated 10,000 fans who had the wherewithal to come back Tuesday.

“His command wasn’t what he wanted it to be today,” Sox manager Rick Renteria said after managing his first game with the Sox. Verlander made sure the runs were enough by being his old self after the first and becoming the first starter

Softball team drops doubleheader at Ball State

The Northern Illinois softball team lost both games of its doubleheader Tuesday at Ball State.

The Huskies lost 3-2 and 6-4 – both of which the Huskies led early.

In Game 1, Alaynie Woollard and Anne Allen each had RBIs in the first inning for the Huskies. In Game 2, Bekah Harnish hit a grand slam to give the Huskies (16-14, 4-4 in Mid-American Conference West) a 4-0 lead in the top of the second, but the Cardinals (2417, 7-1) scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and two in the bottom of the sixth.

Baseball team shut out

The NIU baseball team managed only four hits in its 2-0 loss to Milwaukee in DeKalb.

It’s the first time this season the Huskies (8-20) failed to score in a game.

NIU starter George Faue threw 31/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with three strikeouts. William Anderson, who pitched 22/3 innings of relief, took the loss after allowing one unearned run on two hits.

Quintana’s three homers allowed matched a career high. He confidently shook it off as a bad day at the office, although he is 2-4 with a 6.41 ERA in his past seven starts dating to Sept. 1.

He was sharp during Cactus League games and nearly unhittable in his World Baseball Classic start for Colombia against Team USA, however.

“It was Opening Day, and that’s special,” Quintana said. “I feel blessed and honored to be here for that. I hope the next time is better.”

With so much speculation surrounding him as a valuable trade piece in the Sox’s rebuilding scheme, there was no getting around the knee-jerk wisecracks about his value plummeting in one start.

“Just chalk it up to an anomaly, and you expect when he gets back out there again he’ll be his old self,” Renteria said.

“He missed some spots,” said Narvaez, who caught Quintana five times

last season. “It wasn’t his best day today.

“We have to give credit to them, too.

They are good hitters. We didn’t execute, but it is what it is.”

The Tigers’ first three runs came on JaCoby Jones’ first career homer, and the next two on Nick Castellanos’ opposite-field homer with two outs in a fiverun second. After that, Quintana was fine, save for Ian Kinsler’s homer with nobody on and two outs in the fourth.

The score remained at 6-2 until the ninth, when the Sox put two runners on with no outs in the ninth against right-hander Shane Greene, forcing Tigers manager Brad Ausmus to bring in closer Francisco Rodriguez. Rodriguez retired Narvaez and May (his good for an RBI) on ground outs and Saladino on a foul pop to end a game that didn’t really feel like a genuine opener.

The Sox had gone through Opening Day ceremonies the day before, and the crowd was less than a third of what it would have been.

“It was smaller, but Opening Day is Opening Day for us,” Todd Frazier said. “We’re excited either way. Not many people get to experience that.

Was it different? Yeah. At the same time, it was a lot of people’s first Opening Days and there were some jitters.”

Season debuts forgettable for Bryant

bmiles@dailyherald.com ST. LOUIS – As good as he is, Kris Bryant can afford to laugh at himself now and then.

Before Tuesday night’s game against the Cardinals, Bryant lamented his lack of success in season debuts.

“I’m not a good debuter,” the Cubs third baseman said. “First game in pro ball, first game in rookie ball, first game in short-season, I’ve never had a good first game.”

In Sunday night’s season opener, Bryant was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. Last year in Anaheim, he was 0 for 3, but he did walk twice in addition to striking out twice.

In his major league debut two years ago, he was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts.

“I’m frustrated even after good games,” the reigning MVP said.

“That’s what drives me. Even when I do something good, there’s always something I can do better. There’s no different feeling. We’re going through

this route all over again, hopefully another 180-plus games. It’s a grind. I’ve always been that way.”

Then, on mock seriousness, he said: “I’m going to keep trying my hardest.”

Beyond that, he said it was good to have Opening Night over and done with.

“I felt the nerves,” he said. “It’s the first game, a ton of people here. In Cardinal territory, you feel the nerves a little bit. So it’s nice to just get it out of the way and just move on.”

It’s getting closer: Things are taking shape for the festivities surrounding the Cubs’ season-opening homestand, which begins Monday night with a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers (to be televised exclusively by ESPN).

The championship banner will be raised Monday with Cubs alumni before members of the Ricketts family throw a ceremonial first pitch.

Cubs Hall of Famers Fergie Jenkins, Ryne Sandberg and Billy Williams will lead the seventh-inning stretch.

Fans are encouraged to arrive ear-

ly for home opener pregame festivities, which will start about 6:15 p.m.

World Series rings will be presented Wednesday night, before the second game of the homestand. Former Cubs catcher David Ross will throw a first pitch and sing during the stretch.

Fans may enter Wrigley Field’s new western Gate H through the “Park at Wrigley,” which opens to the public Monday.

Preparing for rain: Bad weather is expected for Wednesday afternoon’s scheduled series finale. If a rainout were to happen, the Cubs would love nothing better than to have the game rescheduled for later in the season so they can stop in Chicago and enjoy an off-day Thursday before heading to Milwaukee for the weekend.

However, there’s a good possibility the Cardinals will insist on playing the makeup game Thursday. The teams have a mutual off-day Thursday, May 11, before the Cubs open a weekend series at Busch Stadium, but the Cardinals might well opt to do the Cubs no favors.

DES PLAINES – The Bears’ leader on defense is a bit slimmer these days.

Outside linebacker Pernell McPhee, who was named the team’s winner of the Ed Block Courage Award, said he is 25 pounds lighter and looking “sexier” as he gets ready for the 2017 season, his third with the Bears.

“I’m doing great right now,” said McPhee, who had offseason shoulder surgery after missing the entire offseason program in 2016 coming off knee surgery. “I Pernell can do just about anything that I did before McPhee anything happened, but it’s definitely been a process.”

McPhee accepted his award, one that is voted on by teammates and organized by the athletic trainers, player representatives and team captains, Tuesday at Maryville Academy.

It “symbolizes professionalism, great strength and dedication.”

“The training staff, peers, and it just tells about a lot I had to put in to overcome a lot of things, and it shows how much respect the guys have for me,” McPhee said.

The Ed Block Courage Award benefits the Ed McCaskey Scholarship Fund, which donates to high school, college and vocational scholarships for the children at Maryville.

“He’s been a leader,” Bears chairman George McCaskey said of McPhee. “People talk about when you lose somebody like (Brian) Urlacher

there’s a leadership void, and I think Pernell’s done a great job of filling that void. He’s fiery. He’s talented.

I wish he had been in better health, but he’s working on that, trying to get back and ready to help us in 2017.”

McPhee was general manager Ryan Pace’s first big free-agent addition in 2015. He played in 14 games that season with 12 starts and had 53 tackles, six sacks and an interception but was limited in the second half of the season by a knee injury.

In 2016, McPhee began the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list before returning to play in nine games.

He had 16 tackles and four sacks.

McPhee would not confirm he would be at OTAs, which begin May 22 for the Bears. Their offseason training program begins April 18. He is expected to be a much more active participant this spring and summer than he was in 2016.

“It’s going to be dangerous because, obviously, last year wasn’t a great year, and the year before wasn’t one, so now hopefully by me losing weight, staying focused, we can turn this around,” he said.

While McPhee is losing weight – something he credited to not eating after 7 p.m., only drinking water at night – OLB Leonard Floyd is putting on weight for next season, and McPhee is looking forward to seeing what the two can do together rushing the passer.

“I’ve talked to [Floyd], just told him to get his weight up,” McPhee said. “He’s a ‘dog,’ I know he’s a dog.

He’s a humble kid and a great person, so just get his weight up and be ready to work this offseason and going into training camp and be ready to have a dominant second year.”

NEW YORK – Carmelo Anthony scored 23 points, and the New York Knicks snapped the Bulls’ four-game win streak with a 100-91 victory Tuesday night.

Courtney Lee had 14 points for New York, and Maurice Ndour added 13 points and 12 rebounds. The Knicks (30-48) had dropped seven of nine.

The Bulls (38-40) shot just 38.1 percent from the field and committed 15 turnovers. They dropped into a tie with Indiana for the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference, just a half-game ahead of idle Miami.

All-Star Jimmy Butler scored 26 points for the Bulls, and Nikola Mirotic had 21 points and 10 rebounds.

The Knicks grabbed control in the second quarter. They outscored the Bulls 25-16 for a 54-40 halftime lead.

New York shot 55 percent from the field in the first half, compared with 33 percent for the Bulls.

Anthony then scored eight points in the third quarter to help New York to an 80-64 advantage heading into the final period.

Justin Holiday had 12 points for the Knicks, and Mindaugas Kuzminskas finished with 11. Kyle O’Quinn grabbed 12 rebounds, helping New York to a 5336 advantage on the glass.

y late mother baked only at Passover. She mostly used kosher-for-Passover box mixes, and I remember the brownies fondly. I waited all year for the wonderful aroma of cakes rising in the oven.

On this eight-day Jewish holiday, which begins sundown April 10 this year, those who observe its dietary restrictions do not eat any foods made from wheat except for matzoh, and that prohibition includes oat, rye, barley and spelt. For generations, Passover desserts got a bad rap because bakers had only matzoh flour and potato starch at their disposal, which imparted what came to be known as the “Passover taste.” Not a good thing.

Well, an entire industry is now devoted to Passover desserts. Yet I find the store-bought holiday selection generally lacking – and, let’s face it, I’m a baker.

Thanks to a growing array of suitable ingredient alternatives, I can tell you it’s possible to bake Passover desserts that are just as good as the ones I make the rest of the year.

When I started experimenting with pie crusts for this holiday in 2011, people said, “Who needs pie for Passover?” My response: Every day is a good day for pie.

With these recipes in hand, there’s no reason to settle for old-school Passover treats.

1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional) For the filling 4 cups fresh blueberries, stemmed and rinsed 1/2 cup granulated sugar, plus 1 teaspoon for sprinkling 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest (from 1 lemon) Dash salt 3 tablespoons potato starch

For the crust: Combine the ground almonds, confectioners’ sugar and potato starch in a food processor; pulse for 10 seconds to blend. Add the frozen butter, coconut oil or margarine pieces; process until the mixture resembles coarse sand.

Add the water, egg yolk and vanilla extract; process just until a dough comes together, being careful not to over-mix. Gather into a ball and flatten, then break off a little more than one-third of the dough. Wrap both pieces of dough separately in plastic wrap and flatten into disks. Chill in the freezer for at least 2 hours, or up to overnight.

Remove the larger piece of dough from the freezer and let it defrost until you can press it gently. Place on a piece of parchment paper sprinkled with confectioners’ sugar. Sprinkle the top of the dough with some more confectioners’ sugar and cover with a piece of parchment. Roll the dough into a 10-inch round. Peel back the top parchment and sprinkle confectioners’ sugar on the dough as you roll. Once or twice, flip over the package of parchment and dough, peel off the bottom and sprinkle some more confectioners’ sugar on top. Re-cover with parchment and flip back over.

Remove the top parchment. Place your hand under the bottom parchment, lift the dough and invert it into the pie pan. Use your hands to gently press and fit the dough to the pan. Remove the remaining parchment (which is now on top). Use a knife to trim the dough, then patch up any bare or thin spots, and use a fork to prick the dough in several places. Reserve any dough scraps for additional cutouts that will form the top crust. Cover the pie shell with plastic wrap and freeze until you’re done with the filling, or up to several days.

Roll the reserved scraps between two pieces of parchment to a thickness of about 1/3 inch thick, then remove the top parchment and cut out the shapes. Unwrap the remaining piece of dough (from the freezer) and repeat the same step to make more dough cutouts; you’ll need a total of about 20. Place them on a lined baking sheet and freeze until firm.

For the filling: Make sure there are no stems on the blueberries. Place 3 cups of them in a stain-proof mixing bowl. Use a potato masher or large fork to break them down a bit. (Be careful not to make them too soupy.) Add the sugar, cinnamon, lemon zest, salt and potato starch, stirring to incorporate. Gently mix in the remaining cup of berries.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Remove the bottom pie crust shell from the freezer and place on top of a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone liner. Spread the filling evenly in the pie crust shell. Remove the dough cutouts from the freezer; use a thin metal spatula to transfer them one by one on top of the filling, in a decorative pattern that does not completely cover the filling.

Use a pastry brush to brush the remaining egg white over the dough cutouts atop the pie, then sprinkle the remaining teaspoon of granulated sugar all over. Bake (bottom rack) for 55 minutes to 1 hour, or until the top crust cutouts are golden and the filling is bubbling. (If the edges of the cutouts or edge of the pie seem to be getting too brown before the pie is done, crimp aluminum foil loosely over them.)

Cool for at least 1 hour before serving or storing.

Jewish cookbooks take bloom in the spring

If the author never produces another cookbook – and we hope that’s not the case – you would think she had been saving the best for last.

As sure as crocuses and daffodils push through in spring, you’ll find a crop of Jewish cookbooks designed to help with Passover meals. Here’s a brief look at some notables this season:

KC hosts drafting contest DAILY CHRONICLE Kishwaukee College was the site of the Region 4 meet on March 3 for the Illinois Drafting Educators Association annual statewide competition for high school students. The I.D.E.A. competition is open to high school students enrolled in drafting programs offered through their high schools.

I.D.E.A. is a nonprofit professional education organization for the advancement of drafting education and drafting as a profession. Nearly 15,000 drafters are employed in Illinois with about 450 positions opening annually.

The student drawings in each division were judged by members of the Kishwaukee College Computer Aided Design Technology Advisory Board. The students chosen as the first- and second-place winners will progress to the state competition at Illinois State University in Normal in April. The authors found the markers for future diabetes were much greater in those exposed to greater amounts of pollutants.

This was independent of socioeconomic status, and even independent of the level of obesity.

The cause isn’t completely clear yet.

Studies in rodents exposed to pollutants have shown increased inflammation within fat cells, accumulation of cholesterol in the liver and decreased ability of muscles to use sugar. This leads to both metabolic dysfunction and obesity. Further, pollutants can lead to systemic inflammation that leads to insulin resistance, and thus the inability to bring sugar into the cells of the body, leaving it to sit in the bloodstream.

What is clear is there does appear to be an association between pollution and diabetes, but more studies are needed to evaluate the degree of the association. Regardless, pollution is obviously unhealthy and needs to be controlled. The measurements of pollution provided in these studies come from the EPA, whose existence is to safeguard the health of current and future societies.

Dear Doctor: A recent study found air pollution increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes. How can that be? Air pollution can’t possibly raise blood sugar levels.

Dear Reader: I can understand your disbelief. My first thought when I saw this study was that it was correlative, not causative.

In other words, air quality is simply worse in cities, which are more likely to have large numbers of people with lower socioeconomic status, who, in turn, tend to have greater rates of obesity and diabetes. Then I looked more closely.

Air pollutants assessed in the studies include nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter between 0.1 to 2.5 microns in size (PM 2.5). Early epidemiologic studies showed a correlation between areas of greater pollution and diabetes, but did not control for socioeconomic status. Then came a 2010 study that used census data from three counties in the United States, and assessed both rates of diabetes and Environmental Protection Agency data regarding PM 2.5 pollution.

The authors took into account such socioeconomic variables as median income, high school completion, male sex and ethnicity – all markers for diabetes risk. The authors found a 16 to 20 percent increase in the prevalence of diabetes in the areas that had the highest amounts of PM 2.5 versus those areas with the lowest amounts, even with all other factors being equal.

Then came this year’s study published in the journal Diabetes that included 314 obese Latino children in Los Angeles. The authors analyzed where the children lived; the amount of pollution to which they were exposed, measured by both nitrogen dioxide and PM 2.5; and their parents’ socioeconom-

A quotation sometimes attributed to Voltaire is: “Each player must accept the cards life deals him or her; but once they are in hand, he or she alone must decide how to play the cards in order to win the game.”

Perhaps “to try to win the game” would have been more accurate.

There are times when your cards are just not good enough to win.

Today’s deal gives two players, East and South, chances to make good plays. What should happen in four spades after West leads the heart king?

North’s rebid showed a balanced 18 or 19 -- or a poor 20 -- points with at least one heart stopper. If South had raised to three no-trump, it would have “ruined” the deal.

South has three red-suit losers, with possible problems in each black suit if the cards are distributed badly.

East can see three defensive tricks: two hearts and one diamond. The fourth will have to come from the trump suit. So, after East wins the second heart, what should he do?

If East immediately leads a third heart, South should discard his inevitable diamond loser. But if East defends better, cashing the diamond ace before playing the third heart, declarer will have to ruff high. Then he has to draw trumps without losing a trick.

Given the 2-6 heart split, West rates to be longer in spades than East. So, South should cash his second high spade. Here, the 10 drops from East. Now declarer should continue with a spade to dummy’s eight. This finesse is a strong favorite to work.

When a defender is hoping for a trump promotion, he should try to cash every side-suit trick first.
