Walk a Mile in Her Shoes raises funds, awareness to assist Safe Passage

news@daily-chronicle.com Several area men found out how difficult it is to wear stiletto heels, as they walked laps Saturday morning around the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center as part of Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, the second-annual fundraiser for Safe Passage. The event is held in April, which is sexual assault awareness month, to bring attention to the often underreported problem.

DeKalb County residents, as well as several members from NIU’s Greek community, borrowed red high-heeled shoes for the event, which signifies that regardless of what a woman is wearing, it’s not an invitation for sexual activity, said Sarah Slavenas, prevention director at Safe Passage. She said that victims of sexual assault often struggle with openly discussing it, and hopes events like this can help take the stigma away for victims.

“There’s a lot of victim-blaming in our so-

ciety, and this offers community members an opportunity to show solidarity and support in a visually fun way,” she explained. “So often people are uncomfortable hearing that someone is a victim, and this can educate people in a light-hearted way.”

Safe Passage board member Art Bingham was having a difficult time walking in the shoes. He said his feet “didn’t feel good.”

“I have a new appreciation for the difficulty of walking in high heels,” he said. “This can help heighten men’s empathy of what it’s like to wear something that’s not necessarily comfortable but society has deemed it as important for women.”

Jerry Lane of Sycamore believes sexual assault is a men’s issue. As a husband, father of two daughters and grandfather of four granddaughters, he wanted to raise awareness about sexual violence.

“Men are the perpetrators, and unless they get involved to solve the problem, it’s not going to go away,” he said. “Men have to

Local police chiefs’ position united on immigration policy

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – After the release of a statement from DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery concerning immigration, other area police chiefs are giving the public assurance that local law enforcement will not change under federal immigration policy.

In the release, Lowery said that after the signing of a Presidential Executive Order in January on immigration, numerous community concerns have been raised on how the police’s treatment of undocumented immigrants may change.

“The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and I, as the Chief of Police for the city of DeKalb, believe that to reduce fear and ensure that we have an open and honest relationship with our community, it is essential that we understand the role of the local police regarding the Presidential Executive Order,” Lowery wrote in his statement.

Sycamore Police Chief Glenn Theriault affirmed that nothing will change with local law enforcement.

“The recent change with President Trump’s immigration stance doesn’t change our mission,” Theriault said. “One of our biggest fears as law enforcement leaders is that someone in our community who is being hurt, harmed or unsafe in any way will not call us, and that is the biggest message I want to get out is to please call us. We’re here to help you.”

Theriault added that it’s the federal government’s role to determine immigration status and that he has been in conversations with Hispanic leaders in the community on the best way to spread the message that local police are not engaged in the business of deportation.

“The hard part is what’s the best timing for that,” Theriault said. “As I expressed to them, I want to start doing this soon, but at the same time, with an ever-changing landscape from a federal government perspective, it’s difficult because we want

Theriault said he is working on organizing local outreach meetings through churches or key institutions within the Hispanic community.

“This is not the type of situation where you want to host a community meeting at a school or the police department, as people are already uncomfortable with that idea,” he said, “but I want to make sure the people in our community, no matter the immigration status, can trust the local police to help them.”

Northern Illinois police Chief Tom Phillips said that a lot of people have been uncertain on how executive actions in Washington, D.C., will affect immigration on a local level and that it’s important people know that police will continue to protect all members of the public.

“What is happening is that the rhetoric is being put out by local law enforcement that nothing has changed with us,” Phillips said. “The agreements that we have with this matter would be voluntary and all of the local chiefs are pretty much on the same page that we will not wel-

come a mandate on this issue.”

Because of the large international student population at NIU, Phillips said he met with various cultural groups on campus to make sure students were aware that federal action will not change local enforcement.

“Students can still focus on their degrees, and we are the same police department we were a year ago,” Phillips said. “Communication at the ground level is very important, especially at communities where there is the most fear, and maintaining good relationships with them is what we do every day.”

What should be the top priorities for the community?

Maintain and repair infrastructure, maintain current City services, and work to keep the burden off of property taxes by encouraging new businesses to move here.

As mayor I would listen to the priorities of the people of Sycamore, and seek to learn the their needs and their interests.

I believe the top priorities should be local business, education, safety, and infrastructure.

A thriving local business district is vital for a healthy Sycamore. When our quaint downtown is healthy everyone seems happier. I would encourage the businesses outside our downtown. They are also an integral part of a healthy Sycamore, as they bring jobs and the energy our community needs.

Sycamore’s children are the future for everyone. Their career choices, their future families, and their service to society will likely be determined by their education. With the funding issues our schools are experiencing from the State legislature, working with the city is paramount.

Safety is on all our minds with the randomness acts of the world. I will encourage the police, fire, and public works departments to continue improving and to educate us all on how to be better prepared.

There are infrastructure plans to continue with improvements in street, sewer, and water treatment. These are costly but necessary. We all enjoy the quality they bring to our lives.

Quality service to our community through public safety, balanced budgets and transparency.

What is your position on allowing the county to expand the amount of property it owns in the city?

I was an Alderman when the County first started expanding its footprint for their County campus. At first I was opposed to the purchase of properties, but later learned that many of the homeowners were anxious to sell their property and none of the property sales were forced. I appreciate that Sycamore is the County Seat because there are advantages like the convenience of having their services close-at-hand and County employees patronize Sycamore businesses and restaurants

It is my understanding that when the county made their last annexation of property it was to be all they would need for many, many years. We have all witnessed the County’s desires for more buildings.

The government needs to be counted on to do what they say just as citizens are accountable. When the county says they have enough space for many many years, they should live within their acquired space.

Expansion is good as long as we have good interest in the development so we do not have underdeveloped and vacant properties associated with such development.

Donald G. Miller, 88, of Apache Junction, AZ, formerly of Somonauk, IL, passed away March 23, 2017 in Arizona.

He was born February 9, 1929, to Harold and Gladys Miller in Somonauk. A 1947 graduate of Somonauk High, he also served in the US Army. He married Doris Trout Riemensnider on February 2, 2002 on the Colorado Belle, Laughlin, NV. For many years, Don was the owner/operator of Miller’s Foods, a Somonauk business established in 1899.

Don was a long-time member of the Union Congregational Church of Somonauk. He was a 56-year member of Meteor Lodge #283 in Sandwich, IL, and past Master of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.

NIU senior Dylan Lagerstam, a former Safe Passage intern, helped start the event last year. He said that it’s very important to spread awareness about sexual assault and domestic violence.

“These are problems that get overlooked and need to be discussed,” he said. “This is a good way to lighten the mood and get people here who might not think about the issue.

Walking in these shoes is a unique experience. It hurts.”

Saturday was the first time that Isaiah Booker, a junior at NIU, had ever worn a pair of high-heeled shoes.

He said he wanted to come to the event after a friend told him about it.

“This is a great cause,” he said.

“It’s important to bring awareness to sexual violence. Men can be a part of the solution, and they can show support. It lets women know that they’re willing to fight with them.”

“Not enough men understand that, and that’s one reason we hold an event like this,” she said. “It’s important for men to understand how vulnerable women are. This is the only crime where the victims are blamed and have to prove their innocence.”

Safe Passage, a DeKalb County nonprofit organization, works with men, women and children who’ve experience power-based personal violence, including sexual assault and sexual abuse, stalking and dating or domestic violence. Statistics show that about one in five college-age women will face sexual violence before she graduates, while one in four girls and one in six boys will experience sexual abuse or sexual exploitation.

Slavenas said that most victims are violated by someone they know, and because of that, often have a fear of coming forward.

“We see sexually predatory comments made by people in power. We live in a culture that tolerates exploitation and victimization,” she said. “Fewer than 40 percent of victims will actually report. Sexual assault and child sexual abuse is happening in DeKalb County, and we’re only seeing a small part of what’s going on. We provide free, confidential services that are available 24 hours a day by trauma-trained staff.”

More than 30 performers of all ages filled the stage for the first Kishwaukee Kiwanis Show: “A Showcase of Community Talent” on Saturday at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St. in DeKalb.

The showcase included more than 15 acts of local performers and served as a fundraiser for the Kishwaukee Kiwanis Club of DeKalb.

The performers at the event said they enjoyed the opportunity to showcase their talents.

“I think it’s great to be able to share with the community,” said Kelsie Kasky, 14, of Joliet.

Kelsie said that meeting new people was also a benefit of participating in the event.

“I think it’s so cool to do it with people that you don’t know,” Kelsie said.

Other performers agreed that they

enjoyed being able to meet local performers and share the stage.

“The best part for me was having fun with the other performers,” said Tom Spielman, 62, of Sycamore. “I’m always learning stuff with experience.”

Bryan Fowler, 20, of Genoa, said that the event was a great way to bring in artists of many different styles.

“It’s an excellent opportunity to get so many artistic acts into one space,” he said.

The event brought in a large audience that filled most of the main floor of the theater. The audience members said that they enjoyed being able to see the different types of talent that the area has.

“I really loved it,” said Larry Knoble, 50, of DeKalb. “Especially the 13-year-old pianist and violinist. I thought he was something else.”

Ralph Sherman, the chairman of the Kiwanis Show Committee and producer of the showcase, said that he was very pleased with the showcase-style event and that the event met his expectations.

“It wasn’t a contest,” Sherman said. “It was a chance to share talent with the community, and I was really pleased with the turnout.”

Sherman said that the event was exactly what the committee had hoped for.

“It’s a community event,” he said.

“There was a feeling that the audience enjoyed it just as much as the performers, and that’s what we wanted.”

The Associated Press CHICAGO – An arrest warrant has been issued for a second teenage boy in the sexual assault of a 15-yearold Chicago girl that was streamed live on Facebook, and further arrests are expected, police said Sunday.

A day after announcing the arrest of a 14-year-old boy on sexual assault and child pornography charges, police said they were looking for a 15-year-old suspect in the March 19 attack, which investigators have said involved five or six males. Investigators didn’t specify how many others would likely be charged, but they did say one adult male was among them.

University of Illinois athletes meet GPA requirements

URBANA – University of Illinois athletes maintained an overall GPA of 3.16 last fall and have graduation rates comparable to the general student body by some measures.

The University of Illinois Athletic Board put together information for the campus Academic Senate on the academic performance of the university’s more than 500 student-athletes, The News-Gazette reported. It’s the first report of its kind in five years.

The report is based on data the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics’ Academic Services program collects quarterly for each sport, as well as evaluations by the Athletic Board’s Academic Progress and Eligibility Committee done once every three years.

Those reports weren’t made public.

Deenihan declined to say if either of the teens who are already facing charges streamed the live video. But the charges against the 14-year-old – aggravated criminal sexual assault, manufacturing of child pornography and dissemination of child pornography – suggest that he shot video or took photographs of the attack, Gug-

Last month, the girl’s mother told The Associated Press that her daughter received online threats after the attack and that neighborhood kids were ringing her doorbell looking for the girl, who hasn’t returned to the neighborhood. State adds solar jobs despite Washington climate

CHICAGO – Illinois’ solar industry is seeing increased growth despite President Donald Trump’s executive order to reverse rules combating climate change.

The nonprofit Solar Foundation released a report this past week that found the number of solar jobs in the state increased to over 3,700 workers in 2016, a 6.7 increase from the previous year.

These numbers rank Illinois as 17th in the country for solar jobs, with employment expected to increase 5 percent this year, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The report was released just before Trump’s order reversing the Clean Power Plan. The plan, signed by President Barack Obama, would have required utilities to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from power plants, increasing reliance on

2 men found shot to death at East St. Louis beauty salon

EAST ST. LOUIS – Police in East St. Louis said two men were found shot to death at a beauty salon.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported that police found the bodies of 39-year-old Wilber Hall of East St. Louis and 21-year-old Andre Chatman of St. Louis when they responded to a call made shortly after 6 p.m.

Saturday that there had been a shooting at the business near the corner of Ninth Street and St. Louis Avenue.

The body of one man was found outside the building and the other was found inside the business.

East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Hubbard said the department is investigating the shootings as a double homicide.

POTOMAC FALLS, Va. – President Donald Trump said that the U.S. is prepared to act alone if China does not take a tougher stand against North Korea’s nuclear program.

Trump’s comments in an interview with the Financial Times come just days before he is set to host Chinese President Xi Jinping at his Mar-a-Lago estate in South Florida.

The two are expected to discuss a number of issues, including North Korea, trade and territorial disputes in the South China Sea during their meeting Thursday and Friday.

“Yes, we will talk about North Korea,” Trump told the newspaper for a story that appeared Sunday on its website. “And China has great influence over North Korea.

And China will either decide to help us with North Korea, or they won’t. And if they do that will be very good for China, and if they don’t it won’t be good for anyone.”

A State Department spokesman said late Sunday that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has been in touch with a top Chinese official about the upcoming trip.

“We can confirm Secretary Tillerson spoke today by telephone to Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi regarding this week’s visit of President Xi and other issues of bilateral and regional importance,” the spokesman said. He discussed the upcoming visit on condition that his name not be used.

In his interview, Trump said trade was the incentive for China to work with the U.S. Still, he said the U.S. could “totally” handle the situation in North Korea without China’s help.

Asked how he would tackle North Korea, Trump said: “I’m not going to tell you. You know, I am not the United States of the past where we tell you where we are going to hit in the Middle East.”

While China provides diplomatic and economic support to its neighbor, it claims that its influence over Kim Jong Un’s government is limited.

The relationship between the U.S. and China has been uncertain since Trump’s election. During his campaign he accused China of unfair trade practices and threatened to raise import taxes on Chinese goods and declare Beijing a currency manipulator, though it is unclear whether Trump will follow through with either threat.

Trump told the newspaper that he doesn’t “want to talk about tariffs yet, perhaps the next time we meet.”

Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, also offered tough talk on China, saying on ABC’s “This Week” that the U.S. is pressing China to take a firmer stand regarding North Korea’s nuclear program.

U.N. resolutions have failed so far to deter North Korea from conducting nuclear and missile tests. Last year, the North conducted two nuclear tests and two dozen tests of ballistic missiles.

“They need to show us how concerned they are,” Haley said. “They need to put pressure on North Korea. The only country that can stop North Korea is China, and they know that.”

Asked what the U.S. would do if China doesn’t cooperate, Haley said: “China has to cooperate.”

Former Defense Secretary Ash Carter, however, said he doubted that Beijing will cooperate.

“I’ve been working on the North Korea problem since 1994,” Carter said on ABC. “And we have consistently asked Chinese leaders ... because they uniquely have the historical and the economic relationship with North Korea, to make a difference.

“They haven’t used that influence, and so it’s hard for me to be optimistic with that,” he said.

End resistance to Medicaid expansion The failure of Obamacare’s opponents in Washington is prompting reconsideration among its opponents outside Washington. The end of the congressional effort to repeal the law has deprived leaders in 19 states of their rationale for rejecting federal money to expand Medicaid.

Expanding Medicaid enrollment to childless adults near the poverty line was one of the key goals of the Affordable Care Act, which boosted the number of people receiving care through Medicaid by more than 11 million, to 74 million.

The cost, more than a half trillion dollars for Medicaid overall, is vast by almost any measure – except as compared with the cost of private insurance plans, in which case it looks economical.

The opponents’ policy reasons for rejecting the additional money never made much sense.

Expanding Medicaid would have allowed hundreds of thousands of their constituents to better afford health care. Yet the partisan and ideological impulse is strong – most of these states are controlled by Republicans, and resisted both former President Obama and greater federal involvement in their states.

Yet it appears there will be no comprehensive Republican alternative to Obamacare. Instead, there is only the existing choice under current law: Accept federal funds for patients too poor to pay for health services, or receive nothing and leave those patients to the mercy of emergency rooms.

And so a time for reconsideration is here.

Republican Gov. Nathan Deal of Georgia said his administration is reviewing its Medicaid program, looking for new “possibilities.” In Kansas, a large majority of state senators, following the lead of their colleagues in the House, have passed a Medicaid expansion bill seeking to cover 150,000 Kansans. Expansion has a new impetus in North Carolina and Virginia, as well.

States seeking to experiment with the law’s Medicaid provisions, as have Arkansas and Indiana, should face few obstacles from Donald Trump’s administration. But whether they opt for one-size-fits-all or seek to adapt Medicaid dollars to unique specifications, the 19 states should all recognize that the rebellion against Obamacare is over.

It’s time to get their people covered and get on with it.

To the Editor: The 10 greatest public health achievements during the 20th century are immunizations for vaccine-preventable diseases, improvement in control of infectious diseases, healthier mothers and babies, and safer food and water.

Improved public health preparedness and emergency response was added to the list for the first decade of the 21st century. These achievements have saved billions of dollars in health care costs according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Having devoted about 45 years of my professional career to public health, I have witnessed first-hand the advances and benefits of these achievements.

The programs and services of a strong public health system have contributed to these noteworthy achievements. Local public health departments play a critical role in keeping the community healthy and safe.

When our local health department’s mission of prevention, promotion and protection are adequately supported, community health risks are significantly reduced. These reduced risks include harm from contagious diseases, illness from contaminated food and water, consequences of natural disasters and bioterrorism, and poor birth outcomes for mothers and babies.

The strength of the DeKalb County Health Department is at risk because of declining federal and state grants.

This reduced funding trend is likely to remain unchanged in the years to come.

Currently, 40 percent of the health department’s funding comes from federal and state grants. Continued decreases in funding from grant sources will result in the reduction and/or elimination of critical public health services to the county’s residents.

I encourage the voters in DeKalb County to vote “yes” on the referendum to support and sustain a strong local public health system.

Kish College trustees committed to present, future students

To the Editor: On Tuesday, all registered voters in Illinois Community College District 523 will have the opportunity to vote for three district residents to serve six-year terms as Kishwaukee College trustees.

We three current trustees who will be on the ballot – Robert Hammon, Robert Johnson, and Linda Mason – are determined that Kish College will continue to effectively serve current and future Kish students, as well as all district residents and communities.

As you may know, Kish College, along with all other Illinois public colleges and universities, has experienced sudden and major funding reductions from the state of Illinois in the past 20 months. The board of trustees had no choice but to approve significant expense reductions, including elimination of 47 employee positions, some of which were unfilled positions and the balance that were layoffs.

Every line item in the budget has received careful scrutiny to make sure that only essential expenses are approved.

Last year, after an extensive nationwide search, the board hired Laurie Borowicz to become Kish’s fifth president after Tom Choice retired at the end of 2015.

She has proven herself to be very capable and a great fit for Kish College.

All three of us have demonstrated our capabilities and commitment to Kishwaukee College. We ask for your support Tuesday.

DAILY CHRONICLE St. Mary’s Catholic School in Sycamore will host the Russell Hustle Trail Run on Saturday at Russell Woods on Route 72 in Genoa.

The Russell Hustle winds through scenic Russell Woods on wide trails and single track as well as on a prairie trail along the Kishwaukee River. The 2K Run/Walk also travels through the woods on the main lane. It is flat and even and is appropriate for a variety of ages and abilities. The 5K begins at 10 a.m. and the 2K Run/Walk begins at 10:45 a.m.

The DeKalb Police Benevolent and Protective Association will host a charity breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon April 23 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1336 E. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb. The breakfast is one of the organization’s primary annual fundraisers. The cost is $5 for adults and $2 for children ages 7 to 11; children age 6 or younger eat for free.

The Aktion Club will receive 10 percent of the dinner purchases and donate the proceeds to the Roger Hoffman Memorial Scholarship, which will be awarded to a senior at Genoa-Kingston High School in May. HAE-In-Motion 5K run scheduled at Hopkins Park

Members of Northern Illinois University’s Pi Sigma Epsilon, a co-ed business fraternity, are partnering with the Hereditary Angioedema Association to put on the HAE-In-Motion 5K run to raise awareness and funds for patients and research.

An NIU student has hereditary angioedema, a rare and potentially fatal autoimmune disease. Medication to treat the disease costs up to $1 million a year.

The run will take place at 11 a.m. Sunday at Hopkins Park in DeKalb. Participants who register in advance will get a race T-shirt and a “swag” bag.

There also will be a chance to win prizes via raffle.

DeKALB – There was a moment that Chad Beebe thought his career was over.

After suffering a debilitating knee injury just before fall camp last season, Beebe is now shaking off the rust as he works his way back into form as one of the few senior receivers for the Northern Illinois football team.

“It’s one of those things, I’ve played football since I was seven, it’s my dream to be playing this game,” Beebe said. “Going into my senior year (in 2016), I thought it was going to be my last year and then I get hurt – thank goodness for the redshirt, but it was tough. Those first few weeks were hard.”

During a 7-on-7 drill before the 2016 fall camp, Beebe was running across the middle and went up for a pass and landed on somebody’s foot – tweaking his right knee and ending his season before it even began.

Beebe also battled back from breaking his arm in the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championship to play in 13 games in 2015.

“Sometimes God puts you through a little adversity to build character and I’m not going to shy away from it at all,” Beebe said.

In his three years, Beebe has 36 catches for 513 yards and two touchdowns in 35 games. He said he isn’t back to where he was before the knee injury and that he’s still working to regain his quickness.

“There’s some rust there, but he’s breaking it off and getting ready to go again,” NIU coach Rod Carey said.

“He’s going to help us, we all know that.”

Beebe is one of four senior receivers for the Huskies, along with Christian Blake, Ezra Saffold and transfer Kelly Weese. The Huskies have a major void at the position with the graduation of Kenny Golladay and Aregeros Turner. Last season, Golladay finished with 87 catches for 1,156 yards and eight touchdowns and Turner was second on the team with 40 catches and had 415 yards with three touchdowns.

Turner (1,356) and Golladay (1,352) were also first and second in all-purpose yards.

“I have to fill in those big shoes that Kenny left and (Turner) and making those big plays when we need them most,” said Blake, who had 34 catches for 457 yards last season. “I have to work on being the guy this

Junior DJ Brown, who came to the Huskies as a running back, had nine catches for 91 yards and said he hopes to emulate the versatility that Turner brought to the offense.

“Following (Turner) last year, he taught me a lot and that’s the role that they want me to bring – the versatility to play receiver and go into the backfield and then jet (sweeps) and all those things that I bring,” Brown said. “Kenny was a good player, the ball went to him a lot of times. This year, the ball will be spread around but everybody can produce and has a role. I don’t know if we can replace Kenny, but we can do some damage with the talent we have in the room.”

Carey the Huskies will need to rely on the entire receiving corps, but said that the Huskies have a history of finding a way to overcome the graduation of a star player.

Spartans rally late in win over Wolves

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore softball team faced an early deficit, but fought its way back for a 5-4 victory over Oswego East thanks to defense and timely hitting.

With Sycamore trailing, 4-3, in the sixth inning, the top of the Spartans’ order came through with a string of four hits, including RBI singles by Joslin Peck and Lexi Gordon, to put them on top for good.

Gordon powered the Spartans (2-31) to victory going 2 for 3 with a walk and knocking in two runs, including the game winner in the sixth inning.

She also threw out a baserunner in the fourth inning from behind the plate, as part of the strong defensive effort

by the entire team.

“It feels great. I am just glad that we could push through that last inning and finally get them out,” Gordan said.

First baseman Mackenna Mittlestaedt provided most of the offense for the Wolves (3-1) going 2 for 4 with three RBIs. The Spartans gave up two runs in the first, but chipped away at the lead, scoring one run in the second and an unearned run in the third thanks to two straight Oswego East errors and an RBI double by Lexi Gordon.

In the top of the third inning, Oswego East had the first two batters reach base, but the Spartans retired the next three to keep the Wolves off the scoreboard for that inning.

Beyond the stats: After going down, 2-0, in the first, Sycamore was in trouble again in the second inning. Oswego East had runners on second and third with only one out when Wolves junior Danielle Williams popped up a bunt attempt to Sycamore shortstop Haley Trela, who charged the ball, then quickly tossed it to third base before the runner could get back, completing the double play and ending the inning.

They said it: “I thought we did a really good job of finishing that (double) play,” Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter said, “(and) not getting too far ahead of ourselves. We made play A, then made play B.” Up next: Sycamore faces off against DeKalb at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Sycamore.

The Spartans won, 15-0, in the first game and 10-0 in the second.

In Game 1, Sycamore junior Zach Carlsen went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and four runs, and senior Jack Mizgalski was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Jacob Montovan picked up the win, allowing one hit in four scoreless innings on the mound.

In Game 2, senior James Marcinkowski went 3 for 3 with two RBIs, junior Jacob Cavanaugh was 2 for 3 with four RBIs and Mizgalski added two hits. The Spartans scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth for the mercy-rule victory.

Justin Pottorff struck out seven and allowed three hits in four innings for the win.

H-BR falls to Seneca: The Royals were shut out, 13-0, in five innings against Seneca.

Taylor Ruh hit a double in the loss for the Royals, who fell to 0-2 on the season. They host Serena at 4:30 p.m.

It started to weigh on him, and it affected his play on the ice. So in his sophomore campaign, he had managed to stay blissfully ignorant of his point total and his place among the league’s forwards for nearly an entire season.

Then he called his grandfather on Saturday.

“I don’t think about this at all,” Panarin said through an interpreter after the Blackhawks’ 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins on Sunday. “I’m trying to play my best all the time, and until [Saturday], I didn’t know how many points I have. And I was arguing a little bit with my grandpa over the phone [when] he started taking about points again. I don’t think about that. So I’m not going to call him today.”

Panarin’s play lately has been no joke. With another goal on Sunday – one of the strangest ones he’ll score in his career – Panarin moved into a tie for ninth place among NHL forwards with 72 points. If he finishes in the top 10, he’ll trigger a $1.725-million bonus for the second straight season – a bonus that can wreak havoc on the Hawks’ offseason plans, as it will count against next year’s salary cap. He has five goals in his last four games, and is one shy of

hitting the 30-goal mark for the second time in as many NHL seasons.

Panarin’s goal was one of the few highlights for the Hawks, who were playing their first game since clinching the Central Division title and home-ice advantage Artemi throughout the Western Panarin Conference playoffs.

The Bruins, meanwhile, have been in a desperate playoff push for weeks, and jumped out took a 2-0 lead through on first-period goals by Ryan Spooner and Patrice Bergeron.

Panarin cut the deficit in bizarre fashion. Richard Panik was turtled inside the Bruins net after taking an elbow from Chara, when Panarin’s shot into a wide-open net hit Panik in the head. The puck bounced back out, Panarin put in the rebound, and Panik had the weirdest primary assist of his career.

“I got an elbow to my right jaw, I wasn’t real happy about that,” Panik said. “But as soon as we scored, I was happy.”

Kevan Miller and Jordin Tootoo traded goals 25 seconds apart midway through the third period, with Tootoo, left all alone in front of Bruins goaltender Anton Khudobin, smacking in a centering feed from rookie John Hayden. But Khudobin, who finished with 41 saves, staved off the Hawks from there.

St. Louis went 86-76 last year and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2010, but the winter additions of Fowler and reliever Brett Cecil ramped up the optimism for this season. The Cardinals got another positive jolt when they announced a new contract

Renteria building chemistry with players, staff

Pitching coach Don Cooper had to marvel at Rick Renteria’s pace during his first spring training as manager of the White Sox. He almost seemed concerned.

“You can’t keep that up in a 162game schedule,” Cooper said.

Having managed the Cubs in 2014, Renteria knows a baseball season is a marathon, not a sprint.

But there was important work to do this spring, laying a foundation for his new regime, bringing players and staff together and enforcing a plan to bring an acceptable brand of play, hopefully starting Monday, when the Sox host the Tigers on Opening Day at Guaranteed Rate Field.

“There were a lot of things to do,” Renteria said when told of Cooper’s observation. “When we started here we talked about inspiring, encouraging and motivating players. We’ve been consistent with that – sometimes in a firmer tone than others.”

Taking over after five years of Robin Ventura as Sox manager, Renteria is overseeing a rebuild with the Sox in a

similar yet far from identical environment he worked in with the Cubs. Renteria had a lot on his plate this spring – starting with team bonding including players in the farm system as well as established veterans, as well as fundamentals, execution and hustle.

Every manager strives for these during spring training, but Renteria pursued it knowing first impressions mean a lot.

“It was a big step for all of us,” Renteria said of spring training.

And not to worry. Renteria, 55, knows the rigors of a 162-game schedule from his years a player, coach and manager, so he knows how to pace himself to avoid a crash and burn.

“During the regular season, my energy level is the same but it’s now going to be concentrated on 25 guys and our staff,’’ he said, suggesting a lighter workload. “I can’t change. It’s going to be hard to put me in a box, but it’s the only way I’m going to be able to function.”

Cooper, the longest tenured coach who has worked under Jerry Manuel, Ozzie Guillen, Ventura and now Renteria, whom he got to know when Renteria was bench coach in 2016, has

bought into the rebuild even though it meant seeing prized pupil Chris Sale leave the building.

“It’s different, where we’re at as a club, as an organization,” Cooper said.

“Where we’re trying to go and who we’re trying to be in the years going forward. Rick has laid a solid foundation.”

Reporters down the hall from the Sox clubhouse this spring heard loud laughter during Renteria’s team bonding exercises. They heard the manager exhorting the team in almost Rockne-esque tones. On the field during morning drills, he was a handson voice of instruction and encouragement.

And players said there is a firm side to him as well.

It’s because Renteria wants things done right.

“If you make a mistake on the field he sheds light on it in a positive way so it’s instructive for everybody to learn from,” infielder Tyler Saladino said.

“Everything we’re doing has purpose, even if it’s the smallest thing. And with so much passion. He’s really trying to create community and family, organizationally inside and out. You come in

excited for what he’s got in the morning.”

Renteria has old-school roots, but he seems to adapt to the new-age player.

“Each day there’s a message, some purpose he’s trying to spread to us,” Saladino said. “It makes for a very good learning environment. Even if it’s something you’re aware of, just the way he breaks it down and the perspective he puts it in is on another level.”

Saladino said Renteria “keeps the fire burning every day.” It will be worth watching to see if he can sustain it for 162 more.

“He’s got this energy and emotion about him that you just cling to,” third baseman Todd Frazier said. “In the meetings everybody is sitting up listening to what he’s got going on. We have a mission: It’s hustle hard and play with enthusiasm and emotion.

Only good things can come out of that.”

Frazier had genuine respect for Ventura and said he loved playing for him.

It was time for a change – even Ventura acknowledged as much – and Renteria provides a breath of fresh air.

“And he’s bringing it,” Frazier said.

“We’ll see what happens.”

ST. LOUIS – Randal Grichuk hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning and a game-ending RBI single in the ninth, helping the St. Louis Cardinals top the Cubs, 4-3, in a wild prime-time opener on Sunday night.

Jose Martinez sparked the winning rally with a pinch-hit double against Mike Montgomery, who closed out the Cubs’ World Series championship in November. Yadier Molina then was awarded the first no-pitch intentional walk in major league history, part of baseball’s offseason rule changes designed to speed up the game.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Grichuk lined a 1-2 pitch into the gap in left-center for his second career game-ending hit. He was mobbed as he rounded first in the rain, and what was left of a sellout crowd of 47,566 cheered.

from Seung-hwan Oh and Jason Heyward singled before Willson Contreras hit a drive to left for a tying homer.

Before the dramatic finish, the night belonged to St. Louis right-hander Carlos Martinez, who retired 12 in a row and 18 of 19 over one stretch against the defending champions. The ace righthander struck out 10 and walked none in 71/3 innings in his first start on opening day.

Jon Lester kept the Cubs in the game with five effective innings despite not having his best stuff. Kyle Schwarber reached three times in his first game as the leadoff hitter since Dexter Fowler left the Cubs for an $82.5 million, fiveyear contract with the Cardinals.

Martinez departed with runners on first and second and the Cardinals clinging to a 1-0 lead. He was saluted with a standing ovation.

Oh then came in and hit Schwarber with a pitch, loading the bases as it started to rain. But Oh retired NL MVP Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo on two fly balls to right, ending the inning.

Another win keeps playoff talk going

jcowley@suntimes.com NEW ORLEANS – They’ve survived dysfunction coming from their own front office, a season-ending injury to their second-best player in Dwyane Wade and an ever-changing lineup.

So surviving an angry Boogie on Sunday?

No problem for this Bulls team.

At least the Bulls team that suddenly has shown up the last 10 days, emerging as one of the hottest squads in a very mediocre Eastern Conference.

Thanks to another stellar 39-point performance from All-Star Jimmy Butler and Bobby Portis chipping in 21 points and 11 rebounds, the Bulls held off a fourth-quarter charge from an agitated DeMarcus “Boogie” Cousins, winning their fourth straight game and improving to 38-39 on the season with an 117-110 win.

It was the Bulls’ sixth victory over their last eight games, and continued to solidify them a playoff ticket, while most of the East has been crumbling around them.

Atlanta, Miami, Milwaukee and Indiana each suffered losses on Sunday, and although the Bulls remained in the No. 7 spot, they are only two games from the No. 5 spot.

And they were loving every minute of it.

While the players were doing postgame interviews, they also were cheering on the Cavaliers in their double-overtime win against Indiana.

Rose to have knee surgery again, miss rest of season

NEW YORK – Derrick Rose’s season is over early because of knee surgery again.

The New York Knicks guard has torn cartilage in his left knee, and the team said he will miss the remaining five games.

“It’s tough for Derrick. He’s played hard all year,” coach Jeff Hornacek said.

“I didn’t hear the real report on it. He’ll get that taken care of and probably be back. But he’s worked hard (over) the last summer with yoga, those kind of things, to get his body in great shape.

It was a surprising, but all too familiar, ending to Rose’s first season in New York. He sat out his third straight game Sunday against Boston, but the Knicks initially reported the injury was just soreness and swelling, with Hornacek saying before the game that he believed Rose could play again this season.

Instead, Rose will go into free agency coming off arthroscopic surgery.

“That’s a quick-healing injury. It could have been worse. You can look at it that way,” teammate Courtney Lee said. “But I feel for him and I am going to shoot out a lot of prayers for him and for a speedy recovery.”

Rose tore his left ACL in the 2012 playoffs and missed the entire next season.

He made it through only 10 games in 2013-14 before he was sidelined by a torn meniscus in his right knee and missed 20 more games the next season because of trouble with the same knee.

Rose played in 66 games last season for the Bulls, his most since his 2011 MVP season, and the Knicks took a chance on his health by acquiring him on the eve of the NBA draft in June.

Rose, who didn’t have to rehab last summer for a change, appeared to have regained much of his quickness this season while playing in 64 games and averaging 18 points.

But his contract expires after this season, and teams will have to decide whether Rose is worth another big deal

given his injury history.

He was no guarantee to return to the Knicks anyway, given their preference to stick with the triangle offense in which Rose isn’t completely comfortable. But he said he liked New York despite the team’s disappointing season and was playing well down the stretch, scoring 24 points against San Antonio and 27 against Detroit in his last two games.

“I thought he’s played well. The explosiveness that you saw years ago, you saw that (again),” Hornacek said. “Again, the way the season has gone, to have something like that happen towards the end is a bad break for us.”

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Their pedigrees are different, but both teams are loaded with veterans. Both have some heft in the middle.

When Gonzaga meets North Carolina for the NCAA national championship on Monday night, it could be quite a brawl.

“They’re big just like us and they match up with us pretty well,” North Carolina’s Theo Pinson said. “Their guards are really good. We just got to play the game and execute.”

The centers are beastly.

Gonzaga (37-1) brings 7-foot-1, 300-pound Przemek Karnowski. He will have 3 inches and 40 pounds on the Tar Heels’ 6-10, 260-pound Kennedy Meeks, who may have had the best game of his career in Saturday night’s 77-76 win over Oregon.

Meeks matched his career high with 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, the last to preserve the victory after the last of North Carolina’s four missed free throws in the final 6 seconds.

“Kennedy, I thought, was awesome,” Tar Heels coach Roy Williams said. “I thought he controlled everything inside – 25 points, 14 rebounds, 11 of 13 (shooting).”

Karnowski will be a load, as he is with every opponent. He was one of the main reasons that Gonzaga regrouped after blowing a 14-point second half lead to beat South Carolina, 77-73.

But the Zags also have 7-foot, 230-pound Zach Collins, whose 3-pointer gave Gonzaga the lead. Collins had 14 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots to help propel Gonzaga – in its first Final Four – into the title game.

“I’m really happy for him,” Karnowski said. “His work ethic is awesome. He’s been playing well for us the entire season. Whenever I go to the bench he gets in, and basically our team doesn’t drop a bit. So he’s been huge for us.”

North Carolina (32-7), the No. 1 seed in the South, will be seeking its sixth national title. Gonzaga, the No. 1 seed in the West, finally has made it after knocking on the door so many times under coach Mark Few. “I’ve had some really, really tough teams,” Few said. “I’ve had some really close teams. I’ve had some teams that have been crazy efficient on the offensive end and ones that have been pretty darned good on the defensive end that probably didn’t get credit for it. These guys are all of that. All of it.”

DALLAS – Dawn Staley finally could raise an NCAA championship trophy.

A’ja Wilson scored 23 points to help coach Staley and South Carolina win their first national championship with a 67-55 victory over Mississippi State on Sunday night.

Staley made the Final Four three times as a player at Virginia but never won. She also led the Gamecocks to the national semifinals two years ago before losing to Notre Dame.

Once the final buzzer sounded, Staley grabbed the trophy and paraded it around the court high over her head.

The victory in front of a sellout crowd came one day after the Gamecocks men’s basketball team lost in the Final Four in Phoenix.

Mississippi State had all the momentum on its side after a shocking win over UConn on Friday night that ended the Huskies’ record 111-game winning streak.

The Bulldogs couldn’t muster the same effort against the Gamecocks.

Morgan William, who had become the face of the tournament with the

game-winner against the Huskies after a 41-point performance against Baylor, was held to only eight points.

South Carolina (33-4) turned a 10-point halftime lead into a 45-31 advantage midway through the third quarter before the Bulldogs rallied. Mississippi State (34-5) slowly cut into its deficit, getting to within 54-50 on Jazzmun Holmes’ jumper. That brought a huge cheer from the thousands of Mississippi State fans who made the eight-hour trip from Starkville, Mississippi.

But that was as close as the Bulldogs could get.

Wilson, who grew up in South Carolina, blocked a shot on one end of the court and then hit a short jumper in the lane that started a 12-2 run to put the game away. Staley emptied her bench with less then a minute left and Wilson left with tears of joy.

The Gamecocks won the title without star center Alaina Coates, who hurt her ankle in the SEC tournament.

She didn’t even travel with the team to Dallas.

“It’s tough losing a great player like Alaina Coates,” Wilson said. “When she went down, a lot people probably thought we couldn’t do it.”

As for whether the physical benefits of calorie restriction apply to humans, a 2016 study in non-obese males and females compared those who maintained their normal diets to those who had a 25 percent decrease in their caloric intake. The subjects were followed for 24 months. The calorie restriction group lost almost 16 pounds more than the control group. Further, people’s moods improved significantly in the calorie restriction group, as did reported improvements in quality of life, sleep and sexual function.

When it comes to calorie restriction and longevity, note that in Okinawa, Japan, calorie intake is 17 percent less in adults and 36 percent less in children when compared to the rest of Japan. The rate of death from heart attacks, strokes and cancer is 31 to 41 percent less than the national average. This doesn’t prove cause and effect, but it does suggest the need for additional research.

Clearly, calorie restriction seems to have benefits, but proving those benefits over the long term in our not-so-steady human lives? That’s not easy. Certainly, however, in our world of plenty, we need to be mindful of the amounts that we eat.

Dear Doctor: Some studies suggest long-term calorie restriction can lengthen lifespan; others say it won’t. Which should we believe?

Dear Reader: This is a perplexing question. We need energy to live, and the food we eat provides that energy. Obviously, gluttony can lead to dire health consequences, including Type 2 diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure, but less obvious is the case for decreasing caloric intake to below normal levels in order to improve health.

The benefit of calorie restriction was first seen in laboratory rats in the 1930s.

Subsequent studies have shown that a 30 to 60 percent reduction in calories in mice and rats led to an increase in both the average and maximal lifespan of the rodents.

Of note, researchers found equal improvement in average lifespan among rodents that exercised to keep the weight down, but no improvement in maximal lifespan. In other words, if the maximal age of a rat is 2 1/2 years, the maximum age would increase to 3 years by calorie restriction, but would stay at 2 1/2 years by exercise.

Calorie restriction has shown benefits in chickens, spiders and even single-celled organisms.

The reason may lie in the reduction of the metabolic rate that occurs with calorie restriction. In reducing the metabolic rate, the body temperature decreases, as does the formation rate of damaging oxidative chemicals. These oxidative chemicals damage DNA, cell membranes and the protein within cells, and may be one of the reasons that bodies age. Also, calorie restriction
