Visiting with a Muslim family in DeKalb When I contacted Mohammed Labadi, Islamic Center of DeKalb president, to ask whether I could interview a local Muslim family, so I could learn how they live here and are accepted in the community, I knew little about their religion or how they would respond.

Then I was invited into the home of the Alkarzon family in the 500 block of Normal Road and spent a pleasant afternoon talking with the patriarch, Awni, and his wife, Manal, along with three of their five children, Nour, Hend and Bashar.

Being interested in finding out how they have adapted to life here, which must be drastically different from their homeland – the Gaza Strip in Palestine, I hardly knew where to begin.

Awni and Manal both have their Ph.Ds, his first one earned in India in American literature, then a second Ph.D. in higher education at Northern Illinois University. She finished her Ph.D. in instructional technology last May. He works in the Division of International Affairs at NIU, marketing the university to foreign students who are seeking an education in American colleges. I was surprised to learn there are more than 1,500 foreign students now at NIU. Before coming here, he was director of the Palestinian American Cultural Center in Palestine. Now, he and Manal have become U.S. citizens.

Talking with their children, I found that two of them graduated from DeKalb High School and are now in college – Nour, a junior at NIU, and Hend, a freshman at Kishwaukee College.

Their one son, Bashar, is a junior at DeKalb High School, and his sister, Maha, who was attending a Bulls game in Chicago that day, is a freshman.

Their other son, Mohammed, attends Jefferson Elementary School, where they told

DEKALB COUNTY LIFE Barry Schrader me most of the foreign families send their younger children. That school, plus DeKalb High School, have English-as-a-second-language programs, which are a great help to kids entering school after moving here from abroad.

There is so much I wanted to ask them, so I started with how they are treated and accepted in the DeKalb community. They all cited positive experiences they have encountered, friendly outreach from the Network of Nations – where they were first greeted upon arrival – and no problem renting a house, shopping and getting acclimated to life in a small college community.

Awni explained it is so different from the violence and crowded conditions on the Gaza Strip, which has a population of 2 million living on land the size of Washington, D.C. They really have appreciated the open spaces here – the trees, the spacious green lawns and parks, which don’t exist where they lived in Palestine.

There is so much more I want to share about them and their religious practices.

Questions about the women’s head scarf, called a hijab, and how they are able to pray five times a day while in school. So this will be covered next week in a second installment.

Barb City Action Committee of DeKalb contributed less than $150 of nearly $20K

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – At the end of last year, the nonpartisan Barb City Action Committee of DeKalb reported to the Illinois Board of Elections that it had collected nearly $20,000 to support the campaigns of seven local city and school board candidates.

However, committee chairwoman Christie Krupp said that barring a contribution of less than $150 toward one candidate, the committee has not financially supported any of the people it is backing for April’s consolidated election.

Krupp said this might be because of the response of some residents who have harangued the acceptance of contributions from a political action committee.

“The purpose was to support the candidate’s campaign efforts, but because of what I would characterize as hyperbolic negative insinuations that have been made regarding this political action committee, people have avoided taking money,” Krupp said. “When someone will turn this around as a truly negative thing to accept contributions, it’s not worth it for the candidates to lose an election based on these negative insinuations.”

Krupp added that although the Barb City Action Committee might be the first legally formed PAC from DeKalb she knows of, nonregulated PACs come in many forms and operate throughout DeKalb.

“Any other groups, teachers, city employees or churches organizing to support a candidate or cause with their efforts, voices, calling trees or money are really political action committees,” Krupp said.

Mayoral candidate Jerry Smith, who was one of the first candidates to receive the group’s backing, said that although this criticism might have been a small factor in why he didn’t ask for monetary contributions from the Barb City Action Committee, he informed the PAC early in his campaign that he might not need the financial support.

“I spoke to them early on after the endorsement that if I was successful in raising my own money, I wouldn’t have to accept their money,” Smith said.

The rest came from unsolicited donations.

In contrast, Mayor John Rey has raised about $16,000, which includes a personal loan of $5,000 toward his campaign.

Misty Haji-Sheikh did not immediately respond to a request for comment on her campaign contributions, but she has raised or spent at least $5,000, according to a D-1 Statement of Organization with the Illinois Board of Elections.

Michael Embrey also did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and no campaign documents were found on the election board’s website.

All campaign committees are required to report their first quarter contributions and expenditures by April 17, according to the Illinois Board of Elections website.

If the Barb City Action Committee stays intact until the next election cycle, Krupp said that the remaining funds simply would roll over.

But if the committee dies, he said, all of the funds would be donated to The Salvation Army.

“Most of the public realize that the funds are a benefit, but the goal is to support candidates that are strong, proven leaders, and that is the bottom line,” Krupp said. “I’m not begrudging our candidates at all, but it’s unfortunate funding has been construed the way it has.”

Sixth Ward candidate Mike Verbic, who received the PAC’s backing and now is running unopposed after his opponent, Michael “Max” Maxwell, dropped out, said he planned to raise his own money throughout his campaign.

“I appreciate the committee’s endorsement,” Verbic said. “But their goal was to recruit candidates for local offices that were proven lead-

ers, and I applaud those efforts, but I would not ask them for financial help.”

Verbic said he managed to raise about $2,100 in individual contributions for his campaign.

The Barb City Action Committee also is backing 4th Ward Alderman candidate Patrick Fagan in his race against Mike Bauling and incumbent Alderman Bob Snow.

Of the nine candidates running for three open seats on the DeKalb School District 428 Board, the committee is supporting board President Victoria Newport, Jeff Hallgren and Jeromy Olson.

The six remaining candidates are Tracy Williams, Shatoya Black, Twangie Smith, Catherine Harned, Valerie Pena Hernandez and Sean Johnson.

In the last week of the election, Krupp said the committee is pushing to send postcards, make signs and buy radio advertising to support its selected candidates.

Were you satisfied with how the school board handled the controversy that led to the removal of its superintendent earlier this school year?

Yes I am satisfied, there were a lot of legalities to consider when making a final decision of how the district as a whole would proceed forward in the process surrounding the controversy. In the meantime we needed to move forward with daily operations as a district, which led to the need of an interim superintendent and decision cannot be made without one in place.

For me, the concern is addressing and dealing with the past. Moving forward in understanding the importance of identifying the approach we will take holistically to make sure that this controversy is not a repeated cycle. This is of priority for our district in the process of building trust through consistent communication, accountability, and transparency that keeps us aligned with policies, while empowering unity in movement. We need to collectively establish an understanding of what our boundaries will be as we work towards being unified in our actions as a district and community.

I understand that when unlawful and/or unethical allegations against an employee, which includes someone from an administrative staff, are made, there must be some immediate action taken, especially when there seems to be an immediate danger present toward another involved. I also understand “due process.” So the initial response of the board seems satisfactory. But as for the terms of the separation agreement, I was not there when decisions were made, and am not privy to all of the details that were exposed that lead as to why those terms were agreed upon.

So I am not able to say whether that agreement is satisfactory or not at this time.

The Board was working diligently toward a relatively quick resolution to the removal of the superintendent. However, the issues involved the terms and conditions of the superintendent’s current contract which ran through June 30, 2019 and various federal and state employment and leave laws which needed to be appropriately addressed. The superintendent had specific rights under federal and state law to utilize various leaves of absences which needed to be honored as well as negotiated a settlement agreement with the superintendent’s legal counsel. The Board of Education chose wisely by approving a settlement agreement for three months’ worth of compensation and benefits. This provided a fresh start for the School District in starting a superintendent’s search as well as saving the District several hundreds of thousands of dollars.

As a community member, I trust that the Board of Education has specific rules, processes, values, and standards that they must uphold. Schools are reflections of society and our norms and values.

Controversies are typically difficult to handle and all individuals are not always happy about decisions that are made in the midst of controversy. This decision had an impact on the schools and the community as a whole. From my point of view, the best way to deal with such a challenge is to come together as a community, move forward, and create a system that reflects transparency, and upholds the standards inherent in justice and integrity.

What, if anything, can the school board do to reduce the tax burden on homeowners?

I do not have all the answers to a long-lasting concern. As a board member you have to be willing to learn.

I understand that there is a process and protocol followed to provide recommendations on how the district should proceed forward financially. In my opinion the district can work on being more proactive in there planning approach rather than reactive. I am willing to collectively discuss and strategically plan what this can look like.

A possible but effective answer to this question is to try to stimulate the growth of the DeKalb community by making the city more desirable in public education. It is, or course, not an overnight fix. And it probably will take a little time. But, with plans that focus on higher graduation rates and increased academic performance starting in the elementary grades, it might give students the encouragement needed to not only do “good” in school, but to stay in school. Thus, it would increase the drop-out rate, as well make the city of DeKalb more appealing to potential homeowners looking for a good school district.

The District is actively pursuing methods to lessen the impact of the 2008 construction bond referendum where $108 million in bonds were issued. The District refinanced $9.3 million of bonds in December 2016. The district has used an independent municipal financial advisor to assist in the process. The results of refinancing this portion of the bonds realized interest cost savings of $1 million dollars due to favorable market conditions. The rest of the construction bonds are scheduled to be callable in the fall of 2017 and 2019. The School District’s bond rating with Moody’s is Aa2 and with Standard & Poor’s AA-.

The bond ratings indicate a very strong capacity to meet obligations and obtain lower interest rates. The Finance and Facilities Advisory Committee also play a crucial role in the school district’s financial decisions. This committee goes through a vetting process of financial and facility issues and makes recommendations to the School Board.

During this debt restructuring process, financial performance, cost containment and strong fund balance policy are crucial in maintaining the favorable bond ratings, even under these unstable state budget conditions. The goal is to lessen the impact to the taxpayers.

This question is an extremely important one. As a community, we must understand the complexities of this situation and realize that, we, as a community can and do need to work together in perhaps a more creative manner and explore other options. More specifically, I believe that in order for DeKalb to reduce the tax burden on homeowners, we, as a team, must collectively and collaboratively work with local government, city council, and business developers to ensure that we create a systematical approach to making the necessary changes. In addition, I strongly believe that we need to research and review the strategies implemented by other districts that have been successful in this regard.

Born: May 30, 1967; in DeKalb, IL Died: March 26, 2017; in Chicago, IL

Tina Marie Losey, 49, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Monday, March 26, 2017, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Born May 30, 1967, in DeKalb, she was the daughter of Thomas and Charlotte (Baugh) Losey.

Our daughter, and Joshua’s mother, passed away after a brief illness. Her passion in life was her son and her love of animals, the ones she chose and the ones others discarded. At her time of passing, she had six. She worked at Nestle Company for many years. She had a beautiful smile and a strong laughter, even through her struggles in life. Now she is at peace.

She is survived by her son, Joshua King (14); his father, William King; her parents, Tom and Fay (Baugh) Losey of Genoa; her brother, Tom (Deb) Losey of Marengo; uncles, Dale (Kristen) Curtsinger of San Diego, California, Jerry (Mary) Losey of Rockford, Jack (Margaret) Mulvaney of Genoa; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and her aunt, Shirley Mulvaney.

We would like to thank our family and friends for all their kindness and support through the loss of Joshua’s mother and our daughter.

Memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 2, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb, with Rev. Bobby Gardener officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date with her family. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until the time of services Sunday, at the funeral home. Kenneth R. Myers, age 83, of Hinckley, passed away on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center in DeKalb, from Alzheimer’s disease complications.

He was born on March 8, 1934 in DeKalb, IL. He was united in marriage to Dorothy White on April 15, 1954 in Hinckley.

Ken graduated from Hinckley High School with the Class of 1952. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1954 to 1956. He was employed by the Hinckley branch of the U.S. Postal Service, first as rural mail carrier from 1963 to 1975, and later as Postmaster from 1975 until the time of his retirement in 1991. Ken enjoyed traveling – especially to Hawaii, and fishing at Sea Gull Lake and Leech Lake in northern Minnesota.

He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Hinckley and had previously served on the church council, as well as the Hinckley-Big Rock School Board. He was a charter member of the Hinckley Historical Society.

The house is being built in the Derby Estates subdivision in Genoa on Sir Barton Drive.

Gunderson said the house will be a 2,100-square-foot, three-bedroom ranch with a formal dining room, open kitchen with a large island,

butler’s pantry, four-car tandem garage, fireplace and country-craftsman-type front facade.

He said the tribute to Slavenas might include an engraved section of the hardwood floors as well as a medallion on the front porch. Construction is expected to be complete in July.

Lankford said he will live in the house with his wife, their 5-yearold son and their 8-year-old daughter. The family currently resides in Clare.

GENOA – When Mark Lankford’s custom-built home is complete, it not only will serve as a place for his family to live, but also as a tribute to his late friend, 1st Lt. Brian Slavenas, who was killed in 2003 fighting in Iraq.

Lankford said he and his wife bought property to build a house in Genoa and later learned about a project to honor fallen service men and women through Gunderson Homes and Elm Street Realtors in Sycamore.

The customized homes can be named after someone who was killed in the line of duty, and features built into the home – such as an emblem or medallion – will recognize the person.

Travis Velazquez, a real estate agent at Elm Street Realtors, developed the idea with Joe Gunderson of Gunderson Homes.

“I lost seven friends in the military,” Velazquez said. “I want to immortalize people who gave the ultimate sacrifice for us.”

Homebuyers have the option to name their home after a fallen service member of their choice, or

Velazquez can name it after someone he served with as an Army and Air Force veteran.

Gunderson said he was eager to go forward with the idea when they started brainstorming two years ago.

“I have family members who served, and with Travis serving and losing close friends, I thought it was a brilliant idea and jumped on board,” Gunderson said.

Lankford said choosing Slavenas was the right thing to do because Slavenas originally was from Genoa, and the tribute will remind community members of Slavenas.

“The reason [to pay tribute] is so we don’t forget about the people who paid the ultimate price,” Lankford said.

Both he and Slavenas were in the 1991 graduating class at DeKalb High School, Lankford said.

“If we were going to do this, it only makes sense to do someone I knew,” he said.

Slavenas was 30 years old when the helicopter he was piloting was shot down Nov. 2, 2003, near Fallujah, Iraq.

Lankford said he reached out to Slavenas’ family to make sure they were on board with the project. He said he would have scrapped the

It was more important to own a clock in the 1800s than it is now. There were no cellphones, land phones, wristwatches or electric clocks to tell time if you didn’t have a clock - just the chiming clock in the church steeple or city hall. Home clocks had to be wound at least once a week to keep accurate time. This 1800s Dutch clock had chimes and an entertaining moving scene of ships and fishing. It sold in Massachusetts for $3,444 at a Skinner Inc. auction.

Q: Do people still collect pewter ice-cream molds? Are they safe to use?

I thought it would be fun to get a mold shaped like a baby to use for a baby shower.

A: There still are collectors of the metal molds, but they are much harder to find than they were years ago. The government decided that the lead in the molds was dangerous and ice-cream figures could not be made at ice-cream shops to be eaten by the public. We know several men who worked for icecream manufacturing companies who bought barrels of the useless molds.

They started selling them to antiques collectors and started a hobby. Today the molds are plastic, not metal. There are vintage tin chocolate molds available at some shows. Both kinds of molds were used from about 1880 to 1950. The price of the mold depends on the maker and the size. The larger the more expensive.

To use a mold, you need all the clips and other parts that holds the mold together after it is filled. *** Tip: Chocolate molds can be used to make candy and other party food.

Pour melted butter into the mold, put the filled mold into the freezer. Take the mold out and unmold the fancy shaped pieces of butter for parties. *** Take advantage of a free listing for your group to announce events or to

Sometimes identifying and dating an antique seems easy, but it fools you.

An unusual wall clock was offered at a recent auction. It was labeled “Friesland wall clock with automata, 1800.”

Friesland is a section of Holland where people have been making clocks since the 1600s. Automata, of course, are the moving figures - in this case, boats that are included below the clock dial for decoration and amusement. There was a moving scene with a woman milking a cow, a fisherman with a fish and three ships with sails. The clock also struck at an hour and half-hour.

The clock case has windows that show the moving pendulum. Add to that the decoration of the case and dial, paintediron Roman numerals, pierced brass hands and mahogany marquetry trim on the wooden case and hood. It had many characteristics of an early 1800s Dutch clock. It was the oldest and the most expensive of many Friesland wall clocks in the sale. Bidders also were sure it was an early clock and the winning bid was $3,444. *** Q: I’d like to get some information and the value of a child’s coffee or tea service with a teapot and lid, six cups and saucers, a creamer and sugar bowl with lid. The pictures on the pieces are of Snow White and the seven dwarfs.

The mark on the bottom of the pot is a crown and the words “Creidlitz Made in Germany,” with “Bavaria” written above the crown.

A: Porcelain Factory Creidlitz was in business in Creidlitz, Bavaria, Germany, from 1913 until at least the 1980s.

Q: I have a small cut-glass bottle that has a glass stopper and a silver cap. The bottle is rectangular, about 4 inches long by 1/2 inch wide. I read that in Victorian times, a widow would collect her tears in a vial. Could my bottle be one of these?

A: Tear collecting is referenced in the Old Testament of the Bible, in ancient Roman and Greek writings, and in Victorian poems and novels, but whether tear collecting was fact or legend is unclear. In the mid-1800s, when Victorian mourning customs became popular, it is said vials were used to collect tears wept for the departed loved one. Later, the tears were sprinkled on the grave to signify the end of official mourning. Another version of the custom claims mourning would last until the tears evaporated. It’s difficult to imagine how a crying person could coax their tears into such a small bottle, but it makes a very romantic image. During the Victorian era, glass bottles were made with decorative caps, and were similar in shape to some scent bottles.

Your bottle, cut glass with a silver filigree cap, is worth about $30. If there is a mark on the silver maker’s mark on the cap, it will be worth more. *** Q: When my mother passed away, she left a bowl commemorating the 1939 New York World’s Fair. CHICAGO – Illinois taxpayers have funded about $2 million in “retention” bonuses for employees of a private firm managing the lottery despite the firm performing so badly that the state is working to replace it.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the state approved paying bonuses as part of a complex deal it made in 2015 with the firm, Northstar Lottery Group.

The company agreed to end its decade-long deal early if the state met a host of conditions, including paying the firm “disentanglement” fees that included the bonuses.

percent to 50 percent of their base pay as a bonus for continuing to work through set periods. The bonus increased to 60 percent of base pay for those who continued to work the first half of 2017.

The bonuses made up the vast majority of disentanglement fees the state paid and also included covering the firm’s additional travel and meeting expenses it says were related to breaking the deal.

Records show those purchases ranged from one employee’s $200 steakhouse dinner tab to nearly $800 to rent furniture for an empty apartment the company leased.

The firm has declined to release names of the employees receiving the bonuses and reimbursements.

ST. CHARLES – A judge handed a 51-year-old suburban Chicago man a 15-year prison sentence for trying to sell a kilogram of cocaine.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said Carlos Garcia-Perez sought to sell it for $27,000. His would-be buyer in 2013 turned out to be an informant.

The Elgin man was convicted Jan. 20 for unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

The Kane County associate judge also ordered Garcia-Perez to pay a fine of $46,400. She determined that was the estimated street value of the cocaine.

Comptroller appeals ruling ordering lawmaker pay

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois comptroller has appealed a Cook County judge’s ruling that state lawmakers must be paid on time despite their failure to pass a budget.

Comptroller Susana Mendoza said Wednesday that Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office filed the appeal on her behalf Tuesday. The judge ruled last week in favor of lawmakers who sued Mendoza’s predecessor seeking pay.

Mendoza spokesman Abdon Pallasch said $8.6 million in back pay owed legislators was released late last week.

But the Democrat is appealing because she said bills for services for the state’s “most vulnerable” should be paid before lawmakers.

Unpaid bills of $12.4 billion have piled up because of the budget stalemate.

The judge based the ruling on a 2014 law passed after then-Gov. Pat Quinn withheld paychecks over pension reform.

The DuPage County Coroner’s Office said Jose Fulgencio-Hueramo of Melrose Park was pronounced dead Tuesday at a hospital after being shocked in a backyard in Addison. An autopsy was planned for Wednesday. The other man was hospitalized.

Officials in Addison said one of the men was knocked from a ladder and the other was in a tree. Power was cut to the lines so authorities could safely respond.

Pre-historic bison bones, mastodon tooth in exhibit

WILMINGTON – Visitors to Illinois’ Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie may now see bones and teeth of some of the

animals that roamed the area thousands of years ago.

A new exhibit at the U.S. Forest Service site features pre-historic bison bones and the tooth of a giant mastodon. Both were discovered near Midewin.

The bison bones were found in 1902 when a local farmer was digging around a spring-fed bog to expand the well for his cattle. Scientists determined the bones likely to be between 200 and 4,400 years old.

Midewin Archaeologist Joe Wheeler is chief curator of the exhibit. He said helping the public to understand what was on the land years ago will help efforts to preserve it.

Senate OKs prohibition on privatizing prison nurses jobs

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Senate is telling Gov. Bruce Rauner it doesn’t want prison nurse jobs filled by private contractors.

Plainview Republican Sen. Sam McCann’s measure won approval Wednesday, 40-15. It would prohibit the Department of Corrections from eliminating jobs of any state employees who provide prison health care services.

Rauner’s administration announced last week it intended to dismiss 124 union nurses and privatize their positions this summer. Corrections officials said they could save $8 million by having contractor Wexford Health Sources provide the nurses. Proponents of the bill said prison nursing jobs are tough to fill. They said Wexford has trouble filling its posts.

NEW YORK – The collapse of the Republican health care overhaul was a sharp setback for anti-abortion leaders, whose hopes of halting federal funding to Planned Parenthood were derailed. But they continue to pursue that goal and also are pushing for a federal ban on most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

David O’Steen, executive director of the National Right to Life Committee, acknowledged the mood of disappointment in the anti-abortion movement after last week’s drama in the House of Representatives, when GOP leaders withdrew their health care bill before a vote. The measure would have cut off more than $400 million in Medicaid reimbursements and other federal funding to Planned Parenthood for its nonabortion services.

However, O’Steen said his organization and its allies remained hopeful of future victories in Congress.

“This was one vote on one measure,” he said. “We have prolife leadership in both houses, we have a pro-life administration. So I expect some good things to help save lives still will happen.”

Woman charged after crash into Capitol police cruiser

WASHINGTON – A 20-year-old woman described as “erratic and aggressive” drove a vehicle into a U.S. Capitol Police cruiser and was taken into custody Wednesday morning, a disruption that closed down streets near the Capitol for nearly three hours.

Shots were fired during the arrest attempt, but the event appeared to be criminal in nature with “no nexus to terrorism,” Capitol police spokeswoman Eva Malecki said.

No one was injured, and the U.S. Capitol remained open.

Zinke: Border wall faces geographic challenges

WASHINGTON – Geographic and physical challenges – including the Rio Grande and threatened wildlife – will make it difficult to build the “big, beautiful wall” that President Donald Trump has promised on the U.S.-Mexico border, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said Wednesday.

Building a wall “is complex in some areas,” including Big Bend National Park and along the river, which twists through nearly half of the 2,000-mile border, Zinke said.

Hundreds of species live within 30 miles of the border, including threatened jaguars and Mexican gray wolves.

The Trump administration is poised to relax protections for the jaguars, which live in northern Mexico and parts of the southwestern United States, to make it easier to build the wall.

Throughout the campaign, Trump energized his crowds with his insistence that a wall will be constructed along the border and that Mexico will pay for it.

Zinke’s comments, and the administration’s budget proposal seeking billions in U.S. taxpayer dollars to finance the project, offer a reality check and a possible sign the president is moving away from his initial plan.

The complications Zinke highlighted were the same faced by Trump’s predecessors, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, as they sought to build or complete hundreds of miles of fencing along the border.

Fencing that is already in place is a mixture of various designs, including towering steel bollards designed to keep both people and vehicles from moving north and shorter steel posts aimed only at blocking cars.

In parts of Texas’ Rio Grande Valley, some stretches of fencing are nearly a mile away from the border in part to accommodate flood plains and an international treaty.

And in Texas, almost all of the land along the border is privately owned. When Bush tried to build border fencing starting in 2006, he faced stiff opposition from local ranchers and farmers, many of whom took the government to court on plans to use their land.

The Department of Homeland Security is responsible for the border wall, but Zinke said the Interior Department will play a critical support role.

According to the Government Accountability Office, federal and tribal lands make up about 632 miles, or roughly one-third of the nearly 2,000-mile border.

“At the end of the day, what’s important is American security and to make sure we have a border,” Zinke told reporters on a conference call. “Without a border a nation cannot exist.”

An internal report prepared for Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly estimated that a wall along the entire border would cost about $21 billion. Congressional Republicans have estimated a more moderate price tag of $12 billion to $15 billion.

Customs and Border Protection said in a statement Wednesday that cost estimates are “premature as there are many variables that are currently unknown.” The agency said it could not provide a detailed estimate for the project.

Kelly told Congress in January that a wall wouldn’t be a complete fix for the border.

“A physical barrier in and of itself will not do the job,” Kelly said during his confirmation hearing. “Certainly it has to be a layered approach.”

D-428 superintendent candidate questions are due by April 5

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Parents and community members within DeKalb School District 428 have until Wednesday to submit questions they would like to see answered by district superintendent candidates.

The Illinois Association of School Boards, which the District 428 board selected last month to aid in its search to replace Doug Moeller after his resignation at the end of April, closed the application process for the opening Monday and will proceed with vetting all applicants.

Board President Victoria Newport said that gaining the community’s in-

put by having people submit questions was the board’s idea and not part of the consulting firm’s original hiring plan.

Parents also will have the opportunity to aid in the search process by volunteering for a series of interview teams for each candidate. These teams will consist of a school administrator, union representatives, staff members and community members.

Each interview team will ask each candidate the same list of questions and evaluate each person’s performance.

Newport said the number of community volunteers she needs for the teams would depend on the number of initial candidates the IASB selects.

City documents show that the goal is for the production facility to be open before Corn Fest in August.

Tax reform plan waiting on the shelf In the wake of the failure by Republicans on Capitol Hill and in the White House to get an Obamacare repeal-and-replace bill off the ground, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin sounded an optimistic note about President Donald Trump’s next big project, tax reform.

Overhauling the nation’s convoluted, inefficient internal revenue code, he said Friday, would be “a lot simpler” than overhauling its sprawling health care system. At which much of Washington rolled its eyes.

After all, the same interplay of interest group conflict, policy complexity and partisan ideology that undid GOP health care efforts would seem to apply to tax reform. The intra-Republican battle over the House’s main new idea – a de facto tax on imports to pay for corporate tax relief – is a case in point.

Still, in one sense Mnuchin may be right. Unlike health care, the subject of a comprehensive bill under Trump’s predecessor that only recently took full effect, the tax code was last given a top-to-bottom fix in 1986. It’s overdue. Moreover, in the past decade or so, problems, such as internationally uncompetitive corporate taxation, have become more salient. And numerous detailed plans for fixing them have emerged from experts on Capitol Hill in both parties.

In short, the legislative shelf is full of policy options from which to choose, if Mnuchin would rather avoid the time-consuming exercise of making his own from scratch.

That’s certainly what we would do in his position. For example, in 2014, then-House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., drafted a bill that would have reduced the top corporate rate from 35 percent to 25 percent and replaced the seven marginal rates for individuals with three: 10 percent, 25 percent and 35 percent.

The lower rates would have been paid for by eliminating or reducing certain long-standing tax breaks, such as the mortgageinterest and charitable deductions.

Accordingly, the congressional Joint Committee on Taxation scored Camp’s plan as revenue-neutral; that is, it neither increased nor decreased the budget deficit. Camp (now retired) included sweeteners for Democrats, with whom he consulted extensively: His plan targeted the notorious special treatment of “carried interest” for hedge-fund managers (something Mnuchin also favors), as well as a break for corporate jets, which was a pet issue of President Barack Obama.

There were objectionable aspects to Camp’s plan. It retained favorable treatment of investment income for top earners, a major source of the growing rich-poor gap. Yet even some top Democrats considered it “a credible effort,” as then-representative, now senator, Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., said. Republican leaders basically nixed it, not because of any policy objection, but because there was more to be gained, politically, in that election year by raining negativity on Obama.

Now, though, the GOP is the governing party, and it’s in a major policy and political jam, which can be escaped by offering plausible plans with at least potential bipartisan appeal. We wonder how many Republicans remember that their erstwhile top tax-law writer bequeathed them a proposal that fits that description. It is right there on the shelf, waiting.

A reckless climate reversal

Under President Barack Obama’s leadership, the world finally began addressing one of the greatest challenges human beings have ever faced, a multigenerational struggle to keep the planet temperate and accommodating to human life. President Donald Trump’s move to rip up Obama’s climate policies are beyond reckless. Children studying his presidency will ask, “How could anyone have done this?”

Climate science is complicated, but the basics are easy enough for those schoolchildren to understand. When humans burn fossil fuels, they emit heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere. Releasing vast amounts of these gases for decades changes the atmosphere’s chemistry, creating an ever-thicker blanket.

The world has therefore warmed and will continue to warm; the more fossil fuels burned, the hotter the planet will get.

The human species still has time at least to moderate the trajectory. But on the course Trump set Tuesday, the prospect will be for sharp environmental disruption. Among many other things, scientists have predicted more and more intense heat waves, more volatile weather, more abrupt changes in the landscape, more destruction from invasive pests, more illness from microbes flourishing in warmer fresh water and more urban flooding. Americans alive today will saddle future generations with the costs of acting too late, when addressing the issue sooner would have been cheaper and far less destructive.

Even as climate science has steadily improved, the U.S. climate debate has descended into a partisan mess, with a once-great American political party embracing rank reality-denial. The nation has now reached

an anti-intellectual nadir, elevating a man who called climate change a “hoax” to the presidency and a climate-change denier to head the Environmental Protection Agency.

The country reaped the fruits of this decision Tuesday, when Trump signed an executive order to unwind Obama’s Clean Power Plan and several other important climate rules.

The practical effects will be serious though not immediate. The Trump administration will have to rewrite federal regulations, which takes time and will encounter stiff resistance from environmental groups with many lawyers. Between now and 2020, other federal policies will continue to put some downward pressure on emissions.

After 2020, the absence of the plan will be felt. According to an Energy Information Agency assessment released in January, energy-related greenhouse-gas emissions would have declined significantly between 2020 and 2030 – not by enough, but it would have been a decent start. Without the plan, these emissions will stay about the same over that crucial decade. And, by the way, energy experts predict no coal renaissance in Appalachia, despite Trump’s campaign promises, because the economics simply do not make sense in a country awash in cheap natural gas.

The nation had a climate policy. Now it does not. If Trump has a plan that would significantly cut greenhouse emissions in a smarter way than Obama’s Clean Power Plan – indeed, a few senior Republican statesmen offered one just a few weeks back – he should propose it. Instead, the president has put the country on a know-nothing path to an endangered planet.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

As Sycamore clerk, Hepker will be ‘go-to’ person

To the Editor: Voters of Sycamore, please allow us to offer our choice for city clerk of Sycamore. Lisa Hepker exemplifies what a go-to person at City Hall should be.

Her experiences, education, commitment to the community and volunteerism have prepared her well to serve the community from the clerk’s office.

Lisa earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Bowling Green State University and a master’s degree in educational technology from National Louis University.

This alone indicates her capabilities and commitment to education. Her advanced degree has prepared her for the ever-changing technologies required in a fast-paced, public office environment.

Lisa has been a friend for more than 10 years. We lived in the same neighborhood for many of those years. That neighborhood became a cohesive political force during the early 2000s.

The Illinois Department of Transportation brought us together as a neighborhood and tightened our community commitment.

Our neighbors gathered for many meetings during those years, and Lisa hosted many. This is where it became apparent that she is an involved, competent and dedicated person.

Lisa has already served the community in so many ways: Sycamore library board president and member, Pay-It-Forward House volunteer and Relay for Life team captain, and she has even found time to volunteer with the Pumpkin Festival Committee.

Through these activities and her work as a youth development educator, Lisa has proved her ability to work with the public effectively and successfully.

Bottom line, Lisa Hepker has proved her mettle. She is the outstanding choice for Sycamore’s city clerk, and we hope you join us in voting for Lisa Hepker for city clerk.

Health department referendum must pass to help those in need To the Editor: For many years, the women of our

church have collected baby clothes and blankets, knitted sweaters and washcloths and bundled them into layettes that can be given to women who cannot afford to buy bright new things for a newborn.

We deliver our bundles to the DeKalb County Health Department; they, in turn, distribute them through our local WIC program.

The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Food and Nutrition Service, vaccinations for our young children, well child clinics, senior health screenings, restaurant inspections – a score of services – are managed efficiently and effectively by health department staff, and, of course, when they’re doing their job well, we take them for granted.

Our state lumbers on without any comprehensive (or comprehensible) budget.

Few if any of us hold out much hope that Congress will allocate adequate resources to help the poor and the sick in this or in any community.

The needy among us, however – across the street or in the pew beside us – depend on the care they receive through our cash-strapped agencies.

Both as a pastor and as a citizen, I ask you to please vote “yes” on the April 4 referendum (“Proposition to increase the limiting rate”) that would, at least, keep intact those services we need the health department to provide.

Otherwise, friends, children and older people who don’t have very much now are going to be hurt.

Health department funding critical to community well-being To the Editor: KishHealth, part of Northwestern Medicine, recognizes the critical importance of our partner, the DeKalb County Health Department, in achieving our common mission to improve the health of the communities we serve.

Improving the health of area residents requires a community to work collaboratively to address the multiple factors that affect one’s health.

Notably, environmental and social factors have a significant influence on our health.

Public health – and specifically the role of the county health department, with its focus on prevention and wellness – is critical in achieving these goals.

We work in partnership with the health department to address the health needs of our community.

For example, we coordinate efforts to support breast-feeding moms to achieve health benefits for the mom and baby.

We conduct joint emergency response planning to coordinate the roles and responsibilities of each organization.

We refer children to the health department’s vaccine for children program.

Moreover, we depend on the health department for surveillance and investigation of infectious diseases to prevent transmission and outbreaks.

Therefore, after careful consideration and given the critical role that the health department plays, we enthusiastically endorse the county referendum.

I encourage you to please vote “yes” for the public health referendum April 4 to help sustain the vitally important services of the health department.

To the Editor: My name is Brian Scholle, and I, along with Evelina Cichy, am co-chairman of the Jerry for Mayor campaign.

I have known Jerry Smith and his family for more than 30 years. I first met him when I joined Kishwaukee Kiwanis. He, at that time and now, was a dedicated Kiwanian, always first to offer help and join a committee.

Those of you who know me know that I am involved with the DeKalb-Sycamore Goodfellows. It was Jerry who got me involved.

As part of his committee, I have been able to observe Jerry and his approach to running for mayor of DeKalb.

His passion and integrity are unmatched. He has a firm grasp on what the needs for the community are at this crucial time in our history.

He has the eyes and ears of the people who can make things happen for the betterment of DeKalb, as well as their respect.

This innate leadership quality will help bind the City Council so that the council can focus on the problems the city faces and the intelligent solutions it needs to bring about positive change.

I applaud all the candidates running for mayor and their commitment to DeKalb to make it stronger, better, safer and more efficient.

Butz a reliable road commissioner for Genoa Township

To the Editor: I have lived my entire life in Genoa. During that time, I have held and still hold a variety of different jobs. Two of these have made my decision clear as to who I am voting for in the upcoming election.

I have worked for Genoa-Kingston School District 424 for the past 27 years. I have also driven towing equipment for 45 years.

During my time with G-K, I was interim transportation director twice.

I also was very much involved with the decision on closing schools during bad weather.

Student safety was always, and still is, our No. 1 priority.

Having Howard and now Keith Butz as Genoa Township road commissioners, that decision was much easier to make.

They were always there if we needed a forecast for road conditions or had concerns about the roads they handle.

They would go out of their way to help the school district in any way they could – not just during the winter, but anytime we needed it, year-round.

We always knew they would be there 24/7.

Many times while towing, I worked hand in hand with Keith, clearing roads of stuck cars so that people could safely get to work or get home.

I will be voting for Keith Butz for Genoa Township road commissioner.

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – For the third day in a row, the DeKalb softball team suffered through a shaky first inning. And for the second time in three days, it cost the Barbs a win.

Huntley scored four runs in the first inning and added three more in the sixth Wednesday in a 7-3 win over DeKalb.

The Barbs have given up at least two runs in the first inning in each of their past three games. During the past two games, starting pitcher Mallory Warner has allowed six runs, five hits, five walks and two hit batters in the first inning.

DeKalb won Tuesday against South Elgin, but couldn’t pull off the comeback Wednesday.

“We had another rocky first inning, walking kids,” coach Jeff Davis said.

“All of a sudden, you find yourself down, and you’re not always going to come back. You’re not always going to get the big hit. It’s a good life lesson, and hopefully we learn from it.”

The Barbs struggled in the first inning Monday at Geneva, as well, on the way to giving up 10 runs in the first four innings of an 11-10 loss in eight innings to the Vikings.

Warner ended up pitching four innings Wednesday, retiring 10 of last 12 batters she faced without giving up a hit after the first.

“We’re going to sit down with our pitchers and talk about their warm-up routine and exactly how much time they need,” Davis said. “Obviously, we’re not doing something correct right there.

We’ve got to be in that slight, little sweat going on, ready to go into the game instead of maybe we’re getting loose too soon. I’m not sure. But we’re going to figure it out.”

The Barbs (3-2) chipped into the Red Raiders’ lead in the bottom of the first inning, with Warner doubling home Payton Montgomery – who had a hand in all three of DeKalb’s runs. The Barbs added another run in the third inning when Jenna Levine singled home Montgomery, and in the fourth, Montgomery flew out, scoring pinch runner Taiylor Karasewski to cut the Huntley lead to 4-3.

against his team. After Huntley’s Kendra Mitchell reached on a bunt, Davis argued that she hit the ball twice with the bat, but the call stood. The Red Raiders scored three runs in the inning to push the lead to 7-3.

“We knew we had a bad first inning, but we were pecking away, one run at a time, one run at a time,” Davis said.

“Then we got a bad call that kind of changed the whole complexion of the inning. Then it kind of blew up right

there.”

Tiffany Giese picked up the win for the Red Raiders (3-0), retiring the last 11 DeKalb batters. She allowed one earned run in her seven innings as Huntley made five errors, all in the first four innings.

“Offensively we executed, and Tif did good on the mound to get it done against a really good team,” Huntley coach Mark Petryniec said. “Defensively, we have to work on some stuff,

and hopefully that will come as it starts to get warmer. They’re a pretty quick team, and put a lot of pressure on us. ...

Beyond the stats: Nelson pitched out of jams in both the fifth and seventh innings. After the first two outs in the fifth, she allowed a single and then an error put two on, but she got the final out. In the seventh, the first two Raiders reached and the bases were loaded with two outs, but she got leadoff hitter Giese to ground out.

They said it: “I don’t want to make excuses, but we just need to find ourselves – who we are, where we’re going, what we’re capable of and being the best at that,” Davis said. “It’s still early. We’re going to hammer out the bumps, and we’ll get there.”

Hawks throttle defending champs

mlazerus@suntimes.com PITTSBURGH – Jonathan Toews knows how the Pittsburgh Penguins feel right now. Their bodies ache and their minds are drained. The regular season has felt like an eternity, and the potential two-month climb back to the top looks daunting.

Toews’ Blackhawks have tried to repeat as Stanley Cup champions three times now. He’s made it all the way to overtime of Game 7 of the conference final, and he’s lost twice in the first round.

There’s a reason no NHL team has repeated as Stanley Cup champions since the 1998 Detroit Red Wings. It doesn’t help that the Penguins’ have been decimated by injuries, with standouts such as Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, Olli Maatta and Trevor Daley on the shelf. But that’s all part of it.

“The amount of games, the short offseason, those are the things that typically kick in [this time of year],” Toews said. “[But] there’s a lot of guys in that room [that are] comparable to this locker room, that have that experience of knowing what it takes to get back to the playoffs, and knowing that’s when the real season begins. That’s when everyone really brings everything they’ve got.”

The Hawks have been coasting themselves a bit lately, with the top seed in the Western Conference well in hand. But after a dreadful two games in

Florida, they snapped back to attention Wednesday night, scoring four first-period goals in a 5-1 rout of the slumping Penguins. It was Pittsburgh’s fourth straight loss, severely denting its chances of catching Washington for the Presidents’ Trophy.

It also was Joel Quenneville’s 850th career victory, and the Hawks’ 24th road win of the season, matching a franchise record. But with five games left in the regular season, the results aren’t really what matter most. It’s the way the Hawks are playing. And for

the first time in a handful of games, they looked like themselves again.

“That’s the kind of game we’ve been hoping for the past few weeks,” Patrick Kane said.

The two losses in Florida were marked by sloppy puck control. The Hawks had no such issues in Pittsburgh, as all four first-period goals were set up by beautiful passing plays.

First, Kane set up Artemi Panarin’s goal at 3:23 of the first period with a slick, no-look backhanded leave behind the net. Nick Schmaltz found

Richard Panik in the slot to make it 2-0. Kane’s crafty touch pass to Marcus Kruger made it 3-0. And 38 seconds later, Marian Hossa finished off a 3-on-1 off a feed from Ryan Hartman for his 25th goal.

Tanner Kero scored on a breakaway at 3:32 of the third to make it 5-0. Kero has a goal and two assists since getting bumped up to the second line in Tampa. He had the best game of his NHL career Wednesday, with a goal, an assist, five shots on goal and two blocked shots.

“He’s played great,” Kane said. “I think he was good against Tampa the other night, and I thought he was great tonight. I just want to keep getting better as a line. It’s nice to have a little bit of consistency there, and it’s good that he’s taken advantage of the opportunity, too.”

Corey Crawford (31 saves) did the rest. His best stops were a glove snare of a Justin Schultz blast from the point with one second left in the second period, and a stoning of a Tom Kuhnhackl breakaway early in the third. Bryan Rust broke up the shutout bid with a 4-on-4 goal at 5:46 of the third period, the lone blemish on an otherwise flawless night – a much-needed one for the Hawks.

“We wanted to stabilize this trip in terms of playing the right way from start to finish,” Quenneville said.

“There was a recent trend going into that Florida game where we weren’t where we needed, or wanted, to be.”

Wade hoping to return if Bulls make postseason

CHICAGO – Dwyane Wade could put away his sneakers and call it a season.

He could shake hands with his teammates, thank his fans one more time and ride off toward the summer.

Instead, the 35-year-old future Hall of Famer is determined to return in the playoffs if the Bulls make it that far. Only two weeks have passed since Wade sprained and fractured his right elbow in a game against Memphis, but the pace of his rehabilitation suggests that a postseason return is at least a possibility.

“He’s a true pro,” coach Fred Hoiberg said after Wednesday’s practice. “He’s in there working every day, he’s in the

weight room, he’s on the treadmill, he’s doing everything that he possibly can.

And, again, he’s upping his activity on the basketball court. That’s a good sign.”

Yes, that includes firing up jump shots with the shooting arm that was confined to a soft cast earlier this month.

“He’s been shooting,” Hoiberg said.

“He’s just got a little bit of soreness and stiffness after, but they want him out there testing it, and again, it’s a work in progress.”

So are the Bulls.

As Wade worked up a sweat in noncontact action, his teammates prepared for a critical game against Cleveland.

At 35-39, the Bulls are in the ninth spot in the Eastern Conference and cannot

afford to backslide.

Hoiberg has noticed a sense of urgency among his players as the playoff push intensifies. He capitalized on a rare three-day break between games this week to give his team Monday off followed by back-to-back practices.

“It’s an important time of year to have practice, leading into this stretch run,” Hoiberg said. “You judge (urgency) based on how these guys come in with their approach in practice, and they’ve been locked in.”

The Bulls have won all three meetings against the Cavaliers this season and are 6-1 against them since the start of the 2015-16 campaign. Each of the three victories this season came with Wade on the court.

“D-Wade was a key for us in those

three wins, especially the last game there, he played an amazing game,” Nikola Mirotic said in reference to Wade’s 20-point, 10-assist, nine-rebound performance on Feb. 25. “I remember in that game, (Cristiano Felicio) got the last rebound (to spoil) his triple-double. It was funny.”

Mirotic turned serious as he discussed the Bulls’ next eight games.

“We need to fight,” Mirotic said. “It’s all about making the playoffs, wait for D-Wade to come back, and we will have another chance.”

Could Wade actually return?

“We truly believe that,” Mirotic said.

“We see him every morning working, stretching, doing his treatments, sweating. So you can see that he really wants to get back, too. It’s important.”

St. Louis Cardinals: The Cardinals did not make the playoffs last season, but it’s always foolhardy to dismiss them from contention.

Fowler could put the same “go” into the Cards as he did with the Cubs.

Talk in the media lately is whether veteran catcher Yadier Molina will sign a contract extension. Molina, 34, has been a Cardinal since 2004, and he put up an impressive line of .307/.360/.787 last year.

Cincinnati Reds: The Reds could use a feel-good story, and they may just have one in pitcher Bronson Arroyo. The 40-year-old Arroyo has not pitched in the big leagues since 2014, when he went 7-4 with a 4.08 ERA with the Diamondbacks.

Arroyo pitched for the Reds from 2006-13, and he’s trying to make a comeback from injuries as a nonroster invitee to spring training. Reports say that if he finishes spring training healthy, he will crack the Reds’ rotation.

First baseman Joey Votto led the league in on-base percentage (.434) last year. He also had an OPS-plus of 160.

Beyond that, it looks like another long year on the banks of the Ohio River. Cubs fans should find plenty of tickets available for the short road trip to Cincinnati.

Sox coping with injuries as start of season looms

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The White Sox left Arizona on Wednesday afternoon a little nicked up, and for a team that on paper shapes up as one without enough punch, pitching and depth to contend at full strength, that had to hurt.

Carlos Rodon, their No. 2 starter and in the view of many a potential future ace, will start the season on the disabled list. Charlie Tilson, a prospect whom the Sox were giving first crack to in center field, is wearing a walking boot on his right foot. And in the final week here,

with everyone ready to go and playing out the spring string, there were two more injury scares when righthander Jake Petricka took a liner off his right pitching hand (X-rays were negative) and infielder Tyler Saladino got hit on the left wrist by a pitch in a minor league game.

Petricka and Saladino appear to be OK. Saladino played second and led off the first inning of the Sox’ Cactus League finale with a home run, his fourth of the spring.

The Sox are rebuilding, anyway, so temporary personnel losses are being taken in stride.

At first glance, the National League Central division looks like it’s the Cubs and everybody else.

At second glance, the NL Central looks like it’s the Cubs and everybody else. At third glance … you get the idea.

Beginning with the 2015 postseason, when the Cubs picked off the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals in the postseason, the balance of power shifted in the Central.

With the Cubs winning the World Series last year, the new order in the division looks like it’s here to stay for a while.

Here’s how it should shake out this season.

Cubs: The defending champs have brought back essentially the same squad from 2016. Notable departures were center fielder Dexter Fowler, who signed with the Cardinals, closer Aroldis Chapman, who went back to the Yankees, and catcher David Ross, who retired.

The Cubs are young, talented and deep. The players didn’t seem affected by their deep playoff runs in 2015 and last year, so there’s no reason to believe they’ll suffer a World Series hangover.

That doesn’t mean things

The starting rotation looks solid, and the Cardinals are counting on a strong recovery

Former closer Trevor Rosenthal still is in the St. Louis bullpen, but he has given way in the ninth inning to Seung Hwan Oh, who had 19 saves last year.

A wild-card spot seems a good bet for this team.

Pittsburgh Pirates: That sound you heard in the fall of 2015 was the Pirates’ window of opportunity slamming on their fingers. That happened when Jake Arrieta and the Cubs knocked the Pirates out of the playoffs in the wild-card game.

The Pirates fell off to 78-83 last year, and talk in the offseason was that the Pirates could trade Andrew McCutchen, the longtime face of the franchise.

McCutchen remains a Pirate, for now. But if the Bucs fall far off the pace by midseason, he could be gone by the July 31 nonwaiver trade deadline.

Milwaukee Brewers: The Brewers are well underway with their rebuilding process.

The Cubs will visit Miller Park on their season-opening road trip.

Like the musical character of “The Sound of Music” fame, Webster sings with her husband, Tim, and seven children. The family travels to local nursing homes to perform for residents, sharing their love of music with others.

The Webster family is one of the 15 acts that will perform at the first-ever Kishwaukee Kiwanis Club community talent show to be held at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St. in DeKalb.

Reserved seat tickets cost $10 to $15 and are available by calling the theater box office at 815-758-1225, by visiting www.egyptiantheatre.org or from any Kishwaukee Kiwanis member. Children younger than 10 will be admitted free, but still require a ticket. Before the event, there will be a meal at Faranda’s Banquet Center, 302 Grove St. in DeKalb. Gold Circle tickets for the dinner and show cost $75.

All proceeds from the talent show will be used to support the Kishwaukee Kiwanis Club’s projects and children’s programs in the community.

“Being together and singing as a family is really important,” Webster said. “Our passion for a long time has been music, and music is for sharing, to do together. It’s fun to be washing the dishes, cleaning up the kitchen and break into a song. We can sing anywhere: in the car, kitchen, wherever.

We don’t need instruments, we just need each other.”

Other acts in the show include the City on the Hill Tumblers; HarmonEssence Chorus, an a cappella ladies’ singing chorus; Upper Octave, a brass band made Hannah up of seven DeKalb High Buckle School band students; the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church adult/ youth and children’s choirs; pianist Hannah Buckle; soprano Lorraine Langer; and singer/songwriter Ben Kohli.

about skill than competing. The talent show sounded like the perfect fit, because we can perform and it’s a great opportunity to communicate a message of hope to the younger generations.”

Jill Parnell of Sycamore, membership coordinator for HarmonEssence Chorus, said she is looking forward to sharing music with the community during the event. The group performs songs from a variety of genres, including country, jazz, gospel, church hymns, musicals and music from the 1960s to 1980s.

“We have traveled to perform in different states, including Texas and Washington,” Parnell said. “We are very excited to sing at the talent show.

It’s wonderful to share our talents with others and to see that there are so many different types of acts and talents in the community.”

Art Box set to host ‘A Painter’s Mask’ exhibition DAILY CHRONICLE “A Painter’s Mask,” an exhibition of paintings by Steven Tritt of Sycamore, will be on display at The Art Box, 308 E. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb, from April 10 through May 12.

An opening reception is scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 9.

Masks are mysterious, says Tritt.

While they appear to conceal, they are really a tool to reveal. They are a metaphor for artists, who, through the art-making process, unveil a unique visual language.

In this exhibition, the masks came from Nigeria, where Tritt’s parents served as missionaries from 1960-63.

The masks hung on the walls of his childhood home. Using the Nigerian masks as subject matter began in December 2014.

It evolved from simple representations to complex compositions of

Tritt earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1990 from Northern Illinois University. Influential professors include Gordon Dorn, David Driesbach and John Rooney.

Tritt’s paintings have been on display in many juried shows, not only in northern Illinois, but also in California.

NIU Steelband will NIU Theatre presents ‘Eurydice’ perform after hours at DeKalb Public Library DAILY CHRONICLE

DAILY CHRONICLE The NIU Steelband is back by popular demand at the DeKalb Public Library.

The community is invited to the library at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 8, for an engaging evening with the world-renowned band directed by Liam Teague and Clifford Alexis.

Created in 1973 by G. Allan O’Connor, the group was the first active steel band formed in an American university and has performed throughout the United States and around the world. Northern Illinois University is one of the few institutions in the world at which students can pursue music degrees (undergraduate and graduate) with the steelpan as the major instrument of choice.

Over the years, the NIU Steelband has broadened the repertoire and performance for the steelpan. Highlights include a performance for 18,000 soccer fans in Yankee Stadium, two successful tours of Taiwan in 1992 and 1998, concerts with symphony orchestras (including the St. Louis Symphony and the Chicago Sinfonietta), and performances at several Percussive Arts Society International Conventions (PASIC). In 2000, the NIU Steelband had the distinction of placing second in the World Steelband Festival in Trinidad, and in 2002, the group performed several concerts (including the opening) at the Seoul Drum Festival in South Korea.

The NIU Steelband is a 35-member group and mainly comprises steelpan and percussion majors. The band performs regularly at public schools, colleges and universities, as well as conventions and arts series. The band has four recordings to its credit, including the most recent, “Dangerous,” featuring an eclectic blend of styles.

The concert is free. It is sponsored in part by the Mary E. Stevens Concert and Lecture Fund.

Art framing to be discussed at KVAL meeting DAILY CHRONICLE Ken Evans, photographer, artist and owner of Franklin’s Frame and Art in Sycamore, will be the guest speaker at the Kishwaukee Valley Art League meeting April 6.

Evans will explain the use of conservation materials in framing: mat, foam board, glass and mounting methods. Also discussed will be why, when and where to use and not use conservation materials. Artists need to get the most for their money. Getting bargains on framing materials, re-sizing frames, and saving money by using some of the facilities at Franklin’s Frames and Art will be explained.

Evans also will discuss the importance of keeping a digital record of artists’ images,

how to take quality images, and the resolution and format to use. He will explain the many possibilities of use for a digital library.

KVAL meetings are at 7 p.m. the first Thursday of the month in the Club Room at Hy-Vee, 2700 DeKalb Ave. in Sycamore.

Meetings are open to the public.

On May 4, KVAL will participate in Give DeKalb County, a 24-hour fundraising event to help build the community, encourage philanthropy, connect donors to organizations, and raise awareness of how nonprofits are serving the county.

ALPHA to host lecture on local historic cemeteries DAILY CHRONICLE

ALPHA: Friends of Antiquity’s first lecture of the spring series will feature local historian Steve Bigolin, who will present “DeKalb-Sycamore Cemeteries” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 6, in room 102 of the Jack Arends Visual Arts Building on the Northern Illinois University campus.

Four of the five historic DeKalb cemeteries still exist.

One, which was on Pleasant Street, has disappeared and its story is tragic.

Prior to the Civil War, Sycamore had two small cemeteries, which were replaced in 1864 by Elmwood Cemetery. Its magnificent entry gates are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

While Fairview Cemetery in DeKalb has one public and two private mausoleums, Elmwood Cemetery has one private and two public mausoleums. Fairview spent more than $400,000 on a multi-year restoration of its public mausoleum, which was

completed last spring.

At one time DeKalb even contained a cemetery for the Ellwood’s prize-winning Percheron horses. It was on property now owned by a church. The Ellwood Mausoleum at Fairview Cemetery meanwhile contains a stained glass window said to be the work of Tiffany and Co. Bigolin, an Illinois historian and lecturer is well known in the area for his knowledge and expertise of DeKalb County history.

He will discuss highlights and details of a few local cemeteries in his illustrated lecture.

ALPHA was founded in 1971 and continues to present lectures to promote the importance of Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan, Roman, Byzantine, Near Eastern and all ancient civilizations, as well as local history. All lectures are free and open to the public.

Kishwaukee Fest returns in July DAILY CHRONICLE

Kishwaukee Fest and Baconpalooza will return to DeKalb County in 2017, according to executive director Michael Embrey. The dates are July 23 to 30.

“We are excited to announce a new line-up of events for this year’s activities,” Jacki Bish, festival coordinator, said in a news release.

The festival will begin Sunday, July 23, with a country music show and possible movie. The band and location will be announced at a later date.

On July 24, a new event called “East End Block Party” will take place. It will be a celebration of stores, restaurants and attractions on Lincoln Highway between Fourth and Seventh streets. This evening event will showcase the new Skateboard Park, dance demonstrations by students from DeKalb Dance Dimensions and open houses for many of the businesses. The celebration also will honor the 70th anniversary of Lothson’s Chicken.

On July 25, a celebration for young people called “Family Fun Fest” will take place before the DeKalb Municipal Band concert at Hopkins Park in DeKalb.

The new “Music at the Mansion” concert will be July 26 at the Ellwood Mansion. This evening concert is “Jazz at the Mansion” and will feature the Mary J Harris Trio performing old standards and smooth jazz.

On July 27, the Sycamore Park District

will present the Lisa Rene Band in concert as part of its season schedule.

The “Parade of Parades” will take place July 28 in downtown DeKalb.

“We are excited with the number of new entries already signed up for the parade this year,” Sue Johnson, parade coordinator, said in the release. “One of the new entries will be an old-fashioned circus wagon with a working music calliope.”

“This is truly a Norman Rockwell type of parade with floats, tractors, beauty queens, drum corps, youth groups and some special surprises for 2017,” Embrey said in the release.

The Baconpalooza: Swine and Wine Fest on July 29 will feature select wine vendors, unique bacon food vendors, specialty craft vendors, and a Corvette show. Also, taking place that day will be a skateboard contest, with entry level for all age classes, and a road rally of classic cars through the county.

July 30, will be the award-winning Turning Back Time Car Show in Sycamore.

The goal for Kishwaukee Fest is to combine attractions to make a week-long celebration, not only for local residents but also to attract tourists to the county.

The festival is looking for both volunteers and members to serve on its board and people interested in assisting with various events.

BRIEF Theater presents ‘Cosi fan tutte’

The Northern Illinois University Opera Theater will present Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Cosi fan tutte” this weekend.

The comedy takes place in late 18th-century Naples, when two officers argue with an older friend, Don Alfonso, about the faithfulness of their girlfriends.

Throughout the opera, Don Alfonso tricks the two into a plot to prove their devotion.

The plot contains moments of laughter, but also of thoughtfulness about the nature of

love, relationships, betrayal and human nature – proving that the messages and themes of the piece remain relevant to audiences today.

Performances take place at 8 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building at NIU. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $7 for seniors and students. NIU students get in for free. Group discounts (10 or more) are available for $5 a person. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

The NIU Jazz Ensemble is wrapping up a busy year with the release of a new CD that is already garnering international acclaim.

The new CD, titled “Footprints,” was recorded live at Northern Illinois University last April. The NIU Jazz Ensemble has nine musicians, all of whom are undergraduate students.

Postproduction work was done by two NIU graduate students.

The CD is comprised of eight tracks and is inspired by the “Supersax” sound that inspired their performances throughout the year. Supersax was a jazz group in the 1970s founded by saxophonist Med Flory and bassist Buddy Clark, in tribute to the iconic bebop saxophonist Charlie Parker.

NIU music faculty earlier this year presented rough cuts of “Footprints” during a guest lecture for the Jazz Studies program at the University of Veracruz in

Mexico. Impressed with the concept and quality, Veracruz faculty invited the NIU Jazz Ensemble to play during their upcoming annual jazz festival in October.

NIU music faculty have since scheduled a full tour for the NIU Jazz Ensemble throughout Mexico around the time of the festival.

Some of the group’s upcoming performances will serve as fundraisers for that trip next fall, including: Thursday: 8 p.m., House Café, 263 E. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb; $10 general admission and $5 NIU students, which includes one copy of the CD “Footprints.”

April 19: 8 and 10 p.m., Jazz Showcase, 806 S. Plymouth Court, Chicago; $10 general admission and $5 NIU students, which includes one copy of the CD “Footprints.”

Manage mind-heart connection with exercise, stress reduction

Dear Doctor: News reports are saying that researchers have figured out how stress causes a heart attack, and that it all starts in the brain. I quit smoking, I exercise and I’ve switched to a healthy diet. But how am I going to control my brain?

Dear Reader: The physical connection between the mind and the heart is something that, even in the absence of scientific data, humans have long intuited. Just take a look at our language. Feelings and events can be heartbreaking, heart-stopping and heart-rending. The guy everyone’s crushing on is a heartthrob. When it doesn’t work out, your heart aches.

Now a paper published in The Lancet offers scientific proof of what everyone from Shakespeare to Beyoncé has been saying all along – emotional stress directly affects the heart.

Drawing from two studies, researchers found when people had high levels of activity in the amygdala, or the region of the brain that telegraphs emotions such as fear, stress and dread, they were more likely to develop heart disease. Participants with a hyperactive amygdala had more inflammation in their arteries, and the region of their bone marrow that creates red blood cells was more active.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among adults, not only in the United States, but in the world. In 2013, onethird of recorded deaths in the U.S. were due to cardiovascular disease. All of which makes managing the mind-heart connection more vital.

But how? You can begin right now by taking a slow, deep breath. If that felt pretty good, try it again. Now, let’s talk about stress-reduction techniques.

Fortunately, with the advent of wellness programs in many workplaces, stress man-

In the same vein, reaching out to friends and family – in person, not via text or Facebook – can help you feel less stressed. Research shows that isolation is as toxic as some diseases, and the therapy can be as simple as a “hello.”

Close friends even get thrown off when I talk to them if they haven’t seen me in a while. I’m fairly happy with it, and people often ask if I do radio or voice acting. I run into problems, though, when strangers comment on it.

If someone says, “Wow, has anyone ever told you that you have a great voice?” or something similar, my first impulse is to make a joke about it. Yesterday, we had a deal in which a bad trump break was mitigated by a lucky lie in a side suit. Here is another. South was in six hearts. What did he do after winning the first trick with the diamond ace?

North might have jump-rebid four hearts with his six-loser hand. South immediately bid what he hoped he could make. He knew that moving slower probably wasn’t going to help him, so he kept the defenders in the dark.

South had a possible loser in each red suit. However, if the trumps were behaving, he rated to take 12 tricks via four spades, five hearts, one diamond and two clubs. But after cashing his heart ace and leading a second heart, West’s club discard was a blow. Now declarer had to eliminate all of his diamond losers before East could ruff in and lead a diamond to his partner’s queen. How could South do that?

The only chance was to find East with four spades. Then if the suit was played without loss, when East ruffed the fifth spade, declarer would be discarding his last diamond.

If East had four spades to his partner’s two, he was twice as likely to hold the spade jack. So South bravely played a spade to his nine. When it won, he cashed the spade ace, led a club to the king and pitched his three low diamonds on the spades to sneak home.
