Domestic violence murder risk can be detected early

Safe Passage executive director As DeKalb County’s only rape crisis and domestic violence agency, we at Safe Passage are acutely aware of how often abusive relationships end in violent tragedies such as the recent St. Charles case of Randall Coffland, who committed the unthinkable when he shot his 16-year-old twin daughters (Brittany and Tiffany) to death, wounded his wife and ultimately took his own life.

We’ve seen our fair share of domestic violence-related homicides and suicides in recent years. Each casualty leaves many in the community feeling helpless and shocked, but you might be surprised to learn that incidents such as the one in St. Charles often follow a predictably lethal path.

One tool used by first responders to prevent domestic violence homicides, serious injury, and re-assault is the Lethality Assessment Program – Maryland Model.

The LAP, developed by the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence, is effective in identifying predictors of lethality and encouraging victims to use the support and shelter services of domestic violence programs.

The LAP screening tool for first responders consists of 11 questions, the first three of which are highly predictive of future homicide, and if any are answered “yes,” it triggers the officer to call an agency such as Safe Passage. In the case of Coffland, one of those questions, “Has he/she threatened to kill

you or your children?” would have received a “yes.” According to news reports, Coffland spoke repeatedly about killing his children.

Victims of intimate-partner homicide typically do not realize the level of danger they are in. Research has shown that only 4 percent of domestic violence murder victims nationwide have ever sought services from an agency such as Safe Passage. In this case, the LAP might have been the difference between life and death. On Feb. 9, police said there was a call to officers reporting “domestic trouble.”

This also is frighteningly common – in 50 percent of domestic violence-related homicides, police previously had responded to a call on the scene.

If the victim’s response to the questions indicates an increased risk for homicide, the officer calls Safe Passage from the scene and helps coordinate the immediate safety of the victim. When following the LAP protocol, the re-assault of domestic violence victims in high danger has been shown to be reduced by 60 percent if they enter a shelter.

1 license available for 3 potential medical marijuana dispensaries in county

Jim Champion of Somonauk, who has had multiple sclerosis for 29 years, has not taken an opiate since 2014 thanks to medical marijuana, which he said is “a pretty liberating feeling.”

“Narcotics make me sick to my stomach,” he said. “If it weren’t for cannabis, I don’t know what I’d do.”

Multiple proposals for medical marijuana dispensaries have gained local approval, including two in Sycamore and one in DeKalb, but whether state regulators will grant one of them a dispensary license, and when, is up in the air.

Champion said he is in an electric wheelchair and cannot drive. He said it would be great to have a dispensary nearby in DeKalb or Sycamore to save patients and their families driving time as well as bring in revenue for the community.

Sandy Champion, Jim’s wife, said the nearest dispensary is about 20 minutes away in Ottawa. They also have options in Naperville, Joliet and Rockford.

She said the dispensaries that have opened up through the state’s medical marijuana pilot program have helped to provide her husband with more options for his medication, such as edibles, vapes, creams and oils.

Sandy Champion also said she no longer has to turn to the black market and instead can go to a safe, legal dispensary, where the products have been inspected.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation began reviewing the first round of dispensary applications in June 2015 as part of the state’s medical marijuana pilot program that began in August 2013.

However, three of the state’s 60 dispensary districts, including DeKalb County, had no one apply for a license to operate a medical marijuana dispensary.

Department spokesman Terry Horstman said a date for when the next round of applications would be reviewed has yet to be determined.

“Our department is currently reviewing [dates], but no decision has been made on a time frame,” he said.

Horstman said there is no set timeline for when any particular dispensary will be granted a license once the application review process begins. A li-

The Dispensary LLC had begun working with city officials in 2015 on a plan for a dispensary at 1985 Gateway Drive in Sycamore, but it was not approved in time to be among the first group of applicants.

The Sycamore City Council voted to renew The Dispensary LLC’s spe-

cial-use permit for the dispensary during its March 20 meeting, as it was set to expire in April. The council also granted a new special-use permit to 2022 LLC to operate a medical marijuana dispensary in an existing building at 2225 Gateway Drive in Sycamore.

Both proposed locations would be near other medical facilities on Gateway Drive. This came after the DeKalb City Council approved a zoning request March 14 for Justice Grown to operate a dispensary in a multi-tenant building at 650 Peace Road.

Only one license to operate a dispensary is available for DeKalb County.

Jamil Taylor, vice president for business development at Justice Grown, said the company is looking to operate in DeKalb because it is a densely populated area, and a dispensary would provide relief for patients who have to travel up to an hour for medical marijuana.

“Imagine if you go to the doctor, and you have to go to Walgreens for medication, but Walgreens is a halfhour away,” Taylor said. “It becomes

an hourlong trip, which can be very daunting.”

Taylor said he is eager for the application review period to begin, and the company is ready to “be first in line” when it does.

“We’ll do whatever it takes to educate the community and to be good neighbors,” he said. “We hope to be a pillar of DeKalb, and we’re happy we’ve been welcomed with open arms.”

Dan Linn, executive director of Illinois’ chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, said a medical marijuana dispensary not only would help in reducing travel time for patients, but it also would create local jobs and fit right in with the health care industry in DeKalb County.

“We need to convince the Illinois General Assembly and the governor that this industry is professional,” Linn said. “The sky has not fallen; there have been no horror stories from allowing people access [to medical marijuana].”

What makes you the best candidate?

Having been educated in a variety of school districts, including both public and private institutions, I have a diverse background to draw from. I come from a profession deeply rooted in analytical thinking, and I spend a lot of time trying to understand the “why” and the “how” of any situation in order to achieve the best outcome for all stakeholders. I’m not shy about asking questions when an issue seems confusing or not thoroughly explained. With no family employed by the school district, I bring an outside perspective to any discussion.

I served on Sycamore’s school board from 2009 through 2013. Also, I have no family ties to the district so I have an autonomous voice on the board. I am a real estate appraiser and consultant by trade. This involves analyzing a variety of types of different real estate including commercial, industrial, residential and agricultural. Also, real estate trends have a direct impact on the Equalized Assessed Valuation (EAV), which in turn impacts the school budget. Having this type of knowledge as a board member will allow me to help administration predict future income and enable better budget planning.

I am also an instructor with the Appraisal Institute. Thus, I can very much empathize with the energy, dedication, and enthusiasm it takes to be a teacher. I took a break from the school board to serve two years as president of the Northern Illinois Chapter of the Appraisal Institute.

What, if anything, can the school board do to reduce the tax burden on homeowners?

With more than 81% of the school’s budget allocated for personnel and benefits, we need to work closely with our valued staff to achieve a sustainable compensation and benefits program that fairly compensates all teachers and administrators while respecting the budgetary constraints of the local and state economies. Furthermore, we must continue to look at the funding models of our extracurricular and elective programs to make sure that any resources being spent on those programs are fairly balanced with the opportunity they provide while acknowledging the existence of alternative programs that may be better suited for providing those opportunities.

Lastly, we must continue to apply pressure on the state legislators, through our respective professional organizations, to eliminate costly and unfunded state mandates.

In order to help reduce property owner’s real estate tax liability, not only do expenses need to be reviewed and analyzed, but also new income possibilities have to be developed. This involves creativity such as exploring new advertising opportunities. Also, fees for extracurricular activities have to reviewed to ensure programs are not draining the district of valuable funds. Effective communication between various booster programs is essential so the school and the boosters can work together to achieve a common goal of enabling kids to participate in desired programs.

The school district has run deficits in the millions in each of the past five school years. How will you evaluate future district budgets?

Deficit reductions have been a goal quite some time, with a slow and measured reduction in costs across the district.

The goal of this approach was to limit the effects of a severe budget adjustment that would materially affect the quality of the education provided by the district while awaiting a hopeful uptick in economic conditions following the severe budget impact of the 2007 to 2009 recession. Unfortunately, economic recovery has been slow and the need for more aggressive action led to the current three-year reduction plan.

Accelerated growth in benefit costs and the lack of flexibility afforded by four-year negotiated contracts with staff provided few options for achieving a balanced budget. This year will mark the first truly balanced budget since I joined the school board four years ago, and future budgets will be strictly managed to continue cost-reduction efforts in order to build up depleted fund balances and avoid the issuance of costly tax anticipation warrants.

Leading up to the great recession, the district was able to build a healthy fund balance. When the recession took hold, we were fortunate to rely heavily upon those reserves to help pay bills. That being said, I voted against budgets with deficit spending. In fact, the first budget I voted in favor of was part of a deficit reduction plan. This was first implemented when I was on the board. We must continue to be responsible to our taxpayers and examine all programs and their respective cost/benefit. Also, capital expenditures need to be prioritized dependent upon need and not want.

DeKalb mayoral candidate’s election sign tampered with

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – With a little more than a week remaining before election day, flyers and campaign signs negatively targeting DeKalb’s four mayoral candidates appeared along Sycamore Road and other parts of the city.

Candidate Misty Haji-Sheikh said her husband, Michael, called DeKalb police Sunday after discovering campaign signs along Normal Road that read “Michael Haji-Sheikh for Mayor” with the caption “Be Realistic.”

“The police have started an investigation into it,” Misty Haji-Sheikh said.

“Having talked with the property owners, these signs had been placed without permission, so they are illegal to begin with. They were also using my husband’s name without permission.”

A message for the DeKalb Police Department was not immediately returned.

Haji-Sheikh said most of the signs that were along Sycamore Road have been removed, and the purpose of the signs may be to confuse voters into selecting mayoral candidate Michael Embrey’s name on the ballot.

“I don’t know where these ads came from, but when it gets to the last couple weeks of an election, everybody’s going to be pulling out stories,” Embrey said.

Candidates said residents also have reported campaign flyers that criticize each mayoral candidate.

Jerry Smith said he was extremely disappointed and had hoped that the entire campaign could have been conducted in a civil manner.

Political signs for Michael Haji-Sheikh appeared Monday in high-traffic locations, such as this one near the intersection of North First Street and Buena Vista Drive in DeKalb.

Michael Haji-Sheikh is not running for mayor; however his wife, Misty, is, along with incumbent Mayor John Rey, Michael Embrey and Jerry Smith.

“I pledge to continue to stay on the high road,” Smith said. “I refuse to get in the muck with the people that want to go there. This is not what I’m about and certainly not what this campaign should be about, and I will move forward for the betterment of the citizens of DeKalb.”

Neither the signs or the flyers featured any information on where they were printed or who paid for them, Haji-Sheikh said.

“I’m focusing on the issues – on how to make a better DeKalb, on the voters and on the things that need to be done,”

East Taylor Street, DeKalb, was charged Friday, March 17, with telephone harassment.

Robert J. Miller, 38, of the 500 block of South Seventh Street, DeKalb, was charged Friday, March 17, with disruptive intoxication.

DeKALB – In an effort to provide greater clarity for restrictions to enterprises using video gaming terminals, the DeKalb City Council approved an ordinance setting limits on gaming locations during its meeting Monday.

The ordinance passed by a vote of 7-1, with 1st Ward Alderman David Jacobson voting against it.

The ordinance’s first regulation limits the number of video gaming terminals at a licensed establishment to no more than five.

This already is required by state law and was set locally in case state law were to be amended.

The second regulation limits the number of video gaming establishments, or locations that primarily are oriented toward video games, to seven.

This limit was set based on the number of liquor licenses outstanding for venues that could qualify as video gaming establishments.

Second Ward Alderman Bill Finucane sought to amend this ordinance

by increasing the number of establishments to 10 after hearing of two other local businesses that have inquired about being video gaming establishments.

“Since we know the interest is still there and want to put a cap on it, then I think 10 is a reasonable cap,” Finucane said.

DeKalb Finance Director Cathy Haley said that video gaming revenues have hit a plateau.

Therefore, 5th Ward Alderman Kate Noreiko said there is not a need to increase the number of gaming establishments.

“I’m not 100 percent convinced this is the additional kind of business we need,” Noreiko said. “I’m comfortable leaving the number at seven. If it turns out there is some pent-up demand, we’ll work with it.”

The amendment failed by a 4-4 vote.

Finucane, Jacobson, 3rd Ward Alderman Michael Marquardt and 6th Ward Alderman Dave Baker voted in favor of the amendment, while Mayor John Rey, Noreiko, 4th Ward Alderman Bob Snow and 7th Ward Alderman Tony Faivre voted against it.

Donation limits lifted in governor’s race

CHICAGO – Democratic businessman Chris Kennedy’s roughly $250,000 donation to his own campaign has lifted spending caps in what’s expected to be another big money race for Illinois governor.

Kennedy’s contribution, filed with election officials Friday, follows Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s record-setting $50 million donation to his own re-election bid last year. However, the former venture capitalist’s contribution didn’t remove the limits because of how early the donation was made.

When a self-funded statewide candidate or family member gives more than $250,000 in the 12 months before an election, the caps are lifted for all candidates, according to state law.

Illinois’ gubernatorial primary is March 20, 2018.

Yet Kennedy campaign spokesman Mark Bergman said Rauner’s action had the effect of lifting the limits. He said Kennedy’s $250,100 contribution sends a message.

NORMAL – Some Amtrak trains operating between Chicago and St. Louis will stop running while upgrades designed to enable trains to reach 110 mph get done.

United Airlines: Customers ‘welcome’ to wear leggings

DENVER – United Airlines said regular-paying fliers are welcome to wear leggings aboard its flights, even though two teenage girls were barred by a gate agent from boarding a flight from Denver to Minneapolis because of their attire.

An airline spokesman said that the girls were traveling Sunday under an employee travel pass that includes a dress code. The move sparked a wave of online criticism against United.

Comedian Sarah Silverman tweeted that she would change her United flight bookings to other airlines for a tour next month because of the leggings issue.

Chicago-based United sought to clarify its stance in a post on its website late Sunday titled, “To our customers ... your leggings are welcome!”

The post said employees are “regularly reminded” about its dress code.

Immigration agent shoots man in Chicago during arrest

CHICAGO – Federal officials said an immigration agent in Chicago shot and wounded a man while trying to make an arrest.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said the special agent was trying to arrest someone on Monday morning when a second individual pointed a weapon toward agents.

ICE officials said the special agent fired his weapon, shooting and injuring the second individual.

Chicago police officials said their officers responded to the call of shots fired.

Chicago police said the man was taken to a hospital and is listed in serious condition.

ICE officials said its Office of Professional Responsibility will review the shooting.

Chicago police said they are investigating any underlying criminal offenses and working with prosecutors and the Department of Homeland Security.

CHICAGO – The wife of a white Chicago police officer charged with murder after shooting a black teen 16 times has been told she shouldn’t train for a job working in the Cook County jail.

Tiffany Van Dyke’s husband, Jason Van Dyke, faces murder charges in Laquan McDonald’s death. She told the Chicago Tribune she was to begin training last week to be a correctional officer. She said she’d already quit jobs and bought expensive uniforms and equipment to start the four-month training.

A top aide to Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said Tiffany Van Dyke’s start date was delayed over safety concerns she would face working in the jail because of her husband’s high-profile case.

NEW YORK – Uber said it is resuming its self-driving car program in Arizona and Pittsburgh after it was suspended after a crash over the weekend.

The company had also grounded self-driving cars in San Francisco over the weekend, but they resumed operating earlier on Monday. The difference between the California program versus the ones in Arizona and Pennsylvania is that California does not allow passengers to ride in the vehicles.

The company said Monday that it paused the operations over the weekend to better understand what happened in Arizona, but feels confident in returning the cars to the road.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Regrouping after a rocky few weeks, the White House declared Monday that President Donald Trump doesn’t consider the health care battle to be over, suggesting he may turn to Democrats to help him overhaul the system after his own party rejected his proposal.

The sudden interest in bipartisanship is a shift for a president who has spent months mocking Democratic leaders as inept. And Democrats indicated they have no interest if his intent still is to dismantle “Obamacare.”

But Trump’s interest reflects the strained state of his relations with conservatives in his party and his search for a way to regain his footing after the painful withdrawal of his health care legislation last Friday.

“I don’t think we’ve seen the end of health care,” White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Monday, pointing to “a series of fits and starts” that marked the process that led to passage of President Barack Obama’s health care law, too, in 2010.

Trump’s failure to win the votes to pass his bill has prompted the new president to rethink how he intends to promote his agenda in Congress.

White House officials are signaling a renewed focus on job creation, taxes and the administration’s push to win confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, a bright spot for the president. House Speaker Paul Ryan huddled at the White House with Vice President Mike Pence, Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price and White House chief of staff Reince Priebus to discuss the legislative agenda, a Ryan spokesman said.

Schumer said that in light of the withdrawal of the House bill, the president should no longer attempt to undermine the Obama law.

Pirro opened her show with a call for Ryan to resign.

Republicans warned that a blame game would be counterproductive.

“It would be a huge mistake for the message on this failure on health care to be to assume that conservatives won’t be good allies,” said Matt Schlapp, the chairman of the American Conservative Union. “Most conservatives stood with the president.”

Publicly, Trump on Monday greeted female business owners to a roundtable discussion on jobs and later joined with Republican lawmakers and members of his Cabinet as he signed into law bills focused on overturning Obamaera regulations.

SYCAMORE – Kindred Hospital celebrated its 31st anniversary as a long-term acute care facility in Sycamore with an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday.

Jim Cohick, chief executive officer of the hospital at 225 Edward St., said the hospital opened in 1986 under the name Vencor and reorganized under Kindred in 1999.

Members of the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce, hospital staff and community members gathered in front of the hospital Friday for the ceremonial ribbon-cutting and to hear Cohick say a few words about Kindred’s presence in the community.

Cohick said the purpose of the open house was to showcase the hospital’s partnerships with Kindred at Home, Kindred Hospice, Kindred’s RehabCare and Pay-It-Forward House, the nonprofit residence for family members of patients in longterm recovery.

He said Kindred Hospital patients stay for an average of 25 days, but

could be someone has a chronic condition, requires dialysis, has issues with breathing, or possibly woundtype issues,” Cohick said. “Most of our patients have at least two significant things they’re dealing with, so that creates the complexity.”

A new plan for financing federal infrastructure

Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., has a long record of clever legislative proposals for financing infrastructure. His latest, announced Wednesday, is to increase the federal gas tax by up to 1.5 cents a year, with proceeds going to pay interest on an annual surface transportation bond issue of $17 billion through 2030.

It would be the first hike in the gas tax, currently 18.4 cents a gallon, since 1993. The resulting dollars would pay for a 30 percent increase in spending from the Highway Trust Fund, above what’s currently planned.

A penny-and-a-half a gallon is almost laughably modest, given that the failure to raise the tax for the last quarter-century amounts to a 40 percent cut in real terms.

However, DeFazio set the figure that low in deference to the long-established political wisdom that says a major gas tax increase would be political death – even as he notes that the political realities may be changing.

While Congress has cowered at the prospect of a federal gas tax increase, state governments have been raising theirs. Since 2013, 19 states and the District of Columbia have enacted gas tax increases or measures to prevent their erosion through inflation, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. The most recent action was a 23-centper-gallon increase last year in New Jersey.

This is not a strictly blue-state phenomenon. More than half of the increases came in states that voted for Donald Trump in 2016, including such heavily rural red states as Georgia and Idaho.

Alaska’s legislature is currently debating a tripling of its gas tax; Tennessee’s Republican governor, Bill Haslam, is pushing a 7-cent

increase.

What such states have in common is a backlog of highway maintenance and construction needs, and a willingness to ask drivers to share in the multibillion-dollar cost of meeting them.

To be sure, this demonstrates a strength of federalism; difficult trade-offs are more likely to be made by people who directly experience not only the costs but the benefits. By its nature, the federal gas tax funds projects that may be remote from motorists who pay it, which is one reason increases are harder, politically.

Nevertheless, to the extent federal fuel taxes fund the Interstate Highway System, they help pay for truly national infrastructure that every American depends on to at least some extent. The fuel-tax increase needed to cover current Trust Fund spending plans would be small, roughly 10 cents a gallon, according to a 2015 Congressional Budget Office report – which is what we’d prefer.

Many experts believe current low interest rates argue for borrowing to fund infrastructure, a proposal of which DeFazio’s, with its dedicated revenue stream, is a relatively fiscally responsible version. Debt-financing may indeed be appropriate for airports, harbors or national parks. Regarding highway construction and maintenance, however, paying as you go through the gas tax has a crucial advantage: It discourages the very activity – driving – that wears out highways in the first place.

In that sense, motor fuel taxes are roughly equivalent to user fees; their additional good side effects include reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. So, DeFazio, we’ll see your penny – and raise you a dime.

More Planned Parenthood lies Not “even a scintilla of evidence.” That was the judgment of a federal judge last month in Texas about allegations of wrongdoing by Planned Parenthood.

He was not alone in finding that the health-care organization did not illegally profit from fetal-tissue donation: Three Republican-led congressional investigations, 13 states and a Texas grand jury all could find no substance to claims about the alleged sale of “baby body parts,” which gained currency through videos released by anti-abortion activists.

It is important to point out these facts in light of an advertising campaign that uses misleading data and half-truths in a bid to whip up support in Congress for a cutoff of federal support to Planned Parenthood.

While the would-be cutters suffered a setback with last week’s collapse of the Republicans’ attempted overhaul of health care, which also targeted Planned Parenthood, it is clear the threat remains and that misinformation will continue to be a key weapon.

“What is Planned Parenthood really about?” is the title of the slick ad that’s the work of the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List.

The ad is effective in delivering its message – but then, it is easy to make a point if you cherry-pick information and don’t

worry about staying true to the facts.

For example, in making the claim that Planned Parenthood has faced federal investigation for “selling baby body parts,” the ad doesn’t mention that the group was cleared repeatedly or that the videos that sparked the inquiries have been completely discredited. There are other distortions about breast-cancer screenings and vital health services offered at Planned Parenthood health centers.

That’s not to mention the omissions, such as the fact that abortions, which constitute a small part of the organization’s services, are not paid for (with rare exceptions) with federal funds.

The ad’s most pernicious distortion centers on the argument that Congress should redirect the federal dollars that go to Planned Parenthood to “real health-care centers for women.” Studies and real-life practice have established that there simply are not enough community health centers to fill the gap that would be created if Planned Parenthood lost Medicaid funds.

The truth is that a cutoff would tear a huge hole in the safety net for the 2.5 million patients – the majority of them low-income – who each year go to Planned Parenthood centers for basic medical needs. Congress should reject it.

To the Editor: We are voting “yes” for the referendum to provide public health services in DeKalb County.

Protecting the health and safety of the public is a vital function of the DeKalb County Health Department that should not be diminished. We have a long history of a positive and successful partnership with the health department staff to ensure the safety of the food we produce and sell on our farm at Jonamac Orchard.

Staff are knowledgeable, professional and responsive to our needs so we can accomplish proper and recommended safety measures.

The nature of our business is highly specialized and unique to our community; however, the health department staff have worked hard to learn about our processes and work alongside our family to ensure we are following best practices for food safety.

When constructing our new cider house – a production facility for sweet cider, hard cider and a tasting room – Dawn Nance and the rest of the team at the DeKalb County Health Department were extremely helpful in setting up our new facilities.

Dawn took time out of her day to look at blueprints and offer suggestions on setup for our bar area, catering kitchen and production area. She was insightful, quick with responses, open to questions and even came on-site to help us with unique situations only an “agritourism” business would deal with.

We were so grateful to have had her and the rest of the health department staff as a resource for our project. As a business in DeKalb County, we view health as an asset that attracts people and other businesses and industry.

The additional cost, if the referendum is approved, is $9.57 annually for the owner of a $100,000 home, or 11.5 cents an acre of farmland. The reduction of state and federal grant funding calls for a local investment in order to sustain our current services, and our county would get a good return for the investment.

These services – including food safety, response to infectious disease outbreaks and other health threats, as well as

ensuring that babies are born and stay healthy – are important to all residents of DeKalb County.

Therefore, please join us in voting “yes” April 4 for the public health referendum.

DeKALB – The DeKalb girls track and field team had to watch as Kaneland and Yorkville shared the title in the Northern Illinois Big 12 last season.

It didn’t sit well with the Barbs.

In the second year under coach Tywon Green, the DeKalb program has seen an emergence, and after winning the conference crown during the indoor season earlier this month, the Barbs have their sights set on their first Northern Illinois Big 12 outdoor title in school history.

“Losing by a few points last year kind of irked me a bit,” Green said.

“You see Yorkville and Kaneland take it from them, and seeing them sharing the title and taking pictures together rubbed me the wrong way.

Coming in second and third isn’t what (the Barbs) want anymore, and they know they don’t want it anymore.”

Hawks’ 3-goal lead vanishes in OT loss

mlazerus@suntimes.com TAMPA, Fla. – Maybe it would be different if the Minnesota Wild were still in front, or even just nipping at the Blackhawks’ heels. Or if San Jose hadn’t dropped off a cliff. Maybe then, the Hawks would be able to summon the same kind of effort and desperation that the Tampa Bay Lightning – frantically chasing down the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference – had Monday night.

“Maybe that last 10 percentage [of effort] hasn’t been there,” Niklas Hjalmarsson said after the Hawks saw a 4-1 lead turn into a 5-4 overtime loss, their second straight defensive disaster. “I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s getting close to the end here, and we’re getting a little bit too comfortable. As soon as you do that, you’re going to lose games.”

This one wasn’t anywhere near as bad as the 7-0 obliteration the Hawks endured in South Florida on Saturday night. In fact, the Hawks dominated the Lightning for about 55 minutes of regulation. But those five other minutes – when Tampa Bay erased a three-goal deficit with three goals in 4:35 during the second period – was all it took, setting the stage for Yanni Gourde’s

“I thought we were 100 percent better than we were the last game,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “We had everything going our way there, and we started getting cute in the neutral zone, and [made] some poor turnovers, gave them some rush chances, [made] some poor clears. … We’ve got to be better with the puck.”

It was a script flip from recent games, in which the Hawks started slowly and rallied for points. But there was little

doubt the Hawks would come out strong after Saturday’s humiliation.

“If we were coming off a 7-0 loss, we would come out pretty hard in that first frame,” Tampa Bay’s Jonathan Drouin said before the game. “It’s going to be like that. They’re a veteran team, they know how to play hockey, they know how to respond; they’ve been doing it for years. So we know it’s going to be a hard start.”

And it was. Artemi Panarin scored on a one-timer, Kane finished off a great play by Hjalmarsson, and Tomas Jurco got his first goal of the season off a terrif-

ic effort in the crease. And when Richard Panik followed his own shot to make it 4-1 at 8:47 of the second, the Hawks were well on their way. But then they let up, and the Lightning took advantage.

Drouin scored on a redirect at 11:49 to make it 4-2. Anton Stralman scored 58 seconds later to make it 4-3. And Drouin tied the game on a power-play goal. The Hawks killed just one of three Tampa Bay power plays, with both goals coming off delay-of-game penalties, by Brent Seabrook and Hjalmarsson. Meanwhile, the Hawks were 0 for 3 on the power play, with few real scoring chances.

At this point, Scott Darling had allowed seven goals on 26 shots in his last three periods, dating back to his relief stint Saturday. But Hjalmarsson said that was on the defense.

“We can’t let in 12 goals in two games,” he said. “And I’m a part of that, too.”

The Hawks rebounded in the third, outshooting Tampa Bay, 10-1, through the first 15 minutes. But the Lightning withstood the onslaught and got the game to overtime, where Gourde ended things with 35 seconds left.

“I’m glad we’re playing like this before the playoffs, so we can make some adjustments and get back to it,” Hjalmarsson said.

Bulls confident they can nab playoff spot in home stretch

jcowley@suntimes.com This is not a Bulls roster short on confidence when it comes to reaching the postseason.

Not only do they talk like a group that feels like it will be a playoff team, but it’s a group that believes they deserve to play beyond the regular season.

“We know we belong there,” veteran center Robin Lopez said.

Boastful talk from a team sitting at 35-39 on the season and still on the outside looking in on the Eastern Conference playoff race.

But they might be onto something.

The Bulls woke up Monday morning just a half game behind Miami for the No. 8 playoff spot. But they also were only 2½ games behind Atlanta, Milwaukee and Indiana for spots five, six and seven. Welcome to the Eastern Conference, where bum teams are alive and well.

“I think we know that we’re a good ballclub,” Lopez said. “When we’re playing the right way and doing what we do best, we’ve beaten some of the best teams in the league. I don’t think there’s any game we think we can’t win.”

On the remaining schedule?

Lopez should feel that way.

On paper, the toughest obstacle left is Cleveland on Thursday, but it’s also a Cavaliers team that the Bulls have manhandled going back to last season. If the Bulls can keep that trend going, they will complete the season sweep of the defending NBA champs.

The one team that has given the Bulls the most difficulty this season has been Atlanta, which they face Saturday, looking to avoid the season sweep.

After those two hills, however? Well, let’s just say the schedule sets up very nicely.

The Bulls go on a four-game trip to New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia

and Brooklyn. Of those four teams, only New Orleans had more than 30 wins this season with 31. Then the Bulls finish at home with Orlando and Brooklyn.

Tailor-made, right?

There’s always a rub with this Bulls team.

“I’m not overlooking any teams,” Jimmy Butler said, adding some realization into the conversation. “All I’m saying is when you look at it, we are supposed to win those. Not saying we will, but if we go out and play the game like people see us playing when we’re going right, then the question is, ‘Alright, can you all play like that every night?’

“If we play like that, then we can win these games. Not overlooking anybody by a longshot, though, because I also know how we can show up some nights.”

Two losses to the Knicks already this season. A bad home loss to Philadelphia last Friday. And then a March 8 loss

down in Orlando.

That’s why Butler still is guarded about those so-called “easy games” on the schedule. If there’s one thing this group has become very good at its underachieving at the worst moments.

But it’s not just about the Bulls in this playoff race. They can be average and still back in because of the awfulness that is the East.

Miami still has Denver, Toronto, Cleveland and two games with Washington on its schedule. Indiana has trips to Memphis, Toronto and Cleveland, as well as games with Milwaukee and Atlanta. Milwaukee has Boston twice, as well as Oklahoma City and a trip to Indiana.

The East has made it so it’s no longer important to be playing your best basketball of the season in April. Just don’t play your worst.

“I know how bad I want this,” Butler said of a playoff push. “My job is to do whatever it takes to make that happen.”

in similar fashion two years, Eaton, then 26, reacted in a different way – he immediately began to press, admittedly, and his performance on the field in spring training reflected it.

“We’re all human,” Anderson said Sunday. “You can’t go out and be a superhero.”

In Anderson’s first at-bat after signing the deal, he tripled to right-center field against Cole Hamels. He is batting .308 with a homer, four doubles and a triple this spring.

One effect of big money is athletes put pressure on themselves to prove they are worth it.

Another is that they set the accelerator on cruise control.

Anderson, who got the extension despite having only 99 major league games under his belt, is far from a finished product, and he insists he won’t stop striving to perfect his skills.

“You still have to approach the game the same way,” he said. “Nothing changes. You go out and play the game the right way. Hustle. Some people sign contracts and tend to relax, but you approach the game the same way. I’m still going to go 100 percent in everything I do.”

Anderson and his wife, Bria, have a 2-year-old daughter, Peyton, who commands his attention at home and while he’s on his phone at his locker when he’s not there.

Life is good for the Alabama native, not that he was struggling to make ends meet before his new deal – the Sox signed him to a $2.164 million bonus after they drafted him 17th overall in June 2013 out of East Central Community College in Decatur, Mississippi.

The contract pays him $850,000 in

2017, $1 million in 2018, $1.4 million in 2019, $4 million in 2020, $7.25 million in 2021 and $9.5 million in 2022. The Sox hold club options for 2023 at $12.5 million and 2024 at $14 million.

“Everything is sinking in,” he said Sunday. “Feeling so blessed. Happy with where I’m at and in a good position.’’

And relaxed.

“Definitely,” he said. “Having fun.

It’s easier to just go out and play now.

Just to be able to play this game, who would have thought if you had looked back five years I would be in this position?”

The Sox put him there because of his work ethic and makeup.

“He’s about trying to be great and trying to win championships,” Hahn said. “He’s not doing this for the money. He’s not going to change his work ethic or who he is in the clubhouse or the field just because he has guaranteed cash in his pocket now. That’s part of the consideration when you enter into something like this.”

Bosio always looking for next successful reclamation project

MESA, Ariz. – Cubs pitcher Brett Anderson has lost so much time to the disabled list in his career that almost two-thirds of his contract this season is tied to how many games he starts.

He’s had two back surgeries in the past three years and said one more back injury could end his career.

So far he has been healthy throughout his first spring with the Chris Bosio Cubs, and one of the reasons he said he believes he can stay that way this season is a change pitching coach Chris Bosio suggested early in camp.

“It’s just to try to limit the pressure on my back,” Anderson said, “a minor mechanical adjustment where I don’t land on my heel as much and kind of land on the ball of my foot or my toes so it’s not such a whiplash effect.”

If Anderson stays healthy for a full season for just the second time in eight years, maybe he’ll count as another pitcher in the win column for Bosio – the Cubs’ resurrection specialist whose

career rehab successes include Jake Arrieta, Scott Feldman, Jason Hammel and Pedro Strop.

Since coming to the Cubs as Dale Sveum’s pitching coach in Theo Epstein’s first year running the organization, Bosio also helped transform Jeff Samardzija from a reliever into a $90 million starting pitcher, helped Ryan Dempster perform well enough in 2012 for the Cubs to get Kyle Hendricks in a trade for him – then helped Kyle Hendricks become the pitcher who led the majors in ERA last year.

Bosio is part of a larger Cubs pitching infrastructure that also includes unsung catching/strategy coach Mike Borzello – who breaks down video and puts tailored pitching plans together perhaps better than anyone in the game.

But Bosio’s own success as a pitcher, his eye for mechanics, his communication style and his philosophy of

letting pitchers be themselves (sometimes at the expense of what might be considered more ideal mechanics) have led to a string of successes that helped lead to the top-ranked pitching staff in baseball last year despite not one homegrown pitcher on the playoff roster.

“Boz is awesome at what he does,” said team president Epstein, who made a priority of keeping the Bosio-Borzello-Lester Strode team intact even after firing Sveum. “They all have their roles, and they’re all awesome.”

For an organization that has drafted and developed hitters over pitchers as a philosophy and consequently produced none of its own starting pitchers since Epstein took over, that group’s success has been critical.

“That’s my job. That’s my responsibility,” Bosio said. “I don’t look at it as, ‘Oh, my God, I’ve got another guy to fix.’ ” But those repair jobs won’t stop coming. Arrieta and John Lackey are eligible for free agency at the end of the year, and the farm system doesn’t look ready to produce the next Arrieta anytime soon.

The Cubs go into this season again without a homegrown pitcher on their

roster. National League Central rivals St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Milwaukee all have at least three homegrown pitchers in each of their rotations – including Opening Day starters for the Cardinals and Pirates.

“We haven’t had that luxury,” Bosio said. “But this organization’s done a great job of getting those position players and recognizing them, and they move through the system fast. They’ve also done a great job of being able to recognize [pitchers] who we can change and make better. I take a lot of pride in that. And it’s a challenge for me.”

Much of the success from the Bosio part of the multilayered pitching program involves simplicity and communication.

Case in point: Anderson’s change.

He also had Strop move to the other side of the rubber. He took Arrieta out of the cookie-cutter mold his staffs in Baltimore tried to impose and worked from his natural, cross-body mechanics.

In the cases of Hendricks and Hammel, he talked in golf analogies to help the communication.

“I haven’t changed that much as a pitching coach over the years,” Bosio said. “I’ve learned from my guys.”

Raiders leaving Oakland for Las Vegas BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush PHOENIX – With the phrase, “Our owners approved overwhelmingly the move,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell made it official: the Oakland Raiders will become the Las Vegas Raiders by 2020 upon completion of the new stadium being built in the “entertainment capital of the world.”

Few will argue with that last quote, but it was Raiders owner Mark Davis who anointed Las Vegas with that title, saying, “My father used to say the greatness of the Raiders is in its future.

“The opportunity to build a world class stadium in the entertainment capital of the world is one opportunity that will give us the ability to achieve that future.”

Goodell, Texans owner Bob McNair, chairman of the Finance Committee: and the Steelers’ Art Rooney II, chairman of the Stadium Committee, all went to great lengths to explain their exhaustive efforts to keep the Raiders in Oakland before being forced to move to Vegas.

The commissioner explained, “We work very hard to avoid the relocation of a franchise and that means exhausting our options and doing everything we can.

“In this instance and in this market, as you know, there has been a stadium situation that has been addressed and both parties have agreed that it’s not going to be relieved for the long term in the best interests of the team or the community.

“We believe we and the Raiders have worked earnestly with Oakland for over a decade to try and find that viable option.”

Goodell also pointed out the 32 owners offered to contribute $100 million more to help finance a stadium in Oakland than they had in any other market, but to no avail.

McNair said, “We’ve worked for probably two years now, not just the last nine months to try and find a solution for the Raiders and, of course, our first choice was to try and find an answer in Oakland.

“Unfortunately we were unable to do that, and the plan that the Raiders now have to be in Nevada and Las Vegas is a very sound plan, one that we’ve looked at very carefully and it meets all of our standards and financial conditions.

“So we’re delighted for the Raiders, we think this will lead to a more stable franchise, and that’s the goal of all

Some have believed over the past couple of years that McNair might have been an important voice in a group of owners who would object to Vegas as an NFL city because it is also the legalized sports betting capital of the world, but there were no mentions of that concern by the commissioner or any of the three owners who spoke at the press conference announcing the move, nor were there any questions on that topic from the media.

Rooney’s take was, “As the commissioner said we appreciate the efforts of (Oakland) Mayor (Libby) Schaaf’s efforts to try and put something on the table.”

“My own personal opinion is that the presence of the baseball team (Oakland Athletics) on that site was a complication that they really couldn’t find a way to work around.”

Davis was clear when asked what the last straw was making it clear to him a deal could not be reached in Oakland.

“I believe it turned during the L.A. part where before the vote for Los Angeles, Oakland had an opportunity to come in and make a presentation to the league and they came in with a five-page piece of paper that had nothing to do with anything.

“They claimed that they would wait for us to lose the vote and then come back and then they’d have all the leverage.

“We lost the vote and then came back and we negotiated a one-year lease with the two years of options and talked about getting together and talking about a long term future together.

“A week later I got a phone call from one of the county board supervisors telling me, ‘Mark, I’m sorry but the lease that we just negotiated, the three years of leases are not going to be valid and we’re going to raise the rate three times on you.

“At that point we ended up signing that lease anyway, but we decided we had to start looking elsewhere to see if we could find a long-term solution.”

While Davis announced his club’s move to Vegas almost a year ago, it was thought to be problematic because the principal financing was originally coming from casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, a man who accumulated his billion-dollar fortune in the gambling business and was not thought to be welcome in the NFL owners circle.

When Adelson dropped out of the deal following a dispute with Davis over terms, and Goldman Sachs pulled additional financing due to Adelson’s departure, the move ap-

peared to be in serious jeopardy.

But Bank of America stepped into the void with a $750 million investment in the stadium plan and when the NFL owners agreed to a relocation fee from Davis that is reportedly slightly more than just half what the Rams and Chargers recently paid to move to Los Angeles, the deal was all but secured.

With his team’s move to Las Vegas now formally approved, the only hurdle remaining for Davis is the new Nevada stadium, which will not be ready for play at the earliest before the 2020 season, and Davis has guarantees to remain in Oakland only through 2018.

Davis indicated he will talk to the city of Oakland about a deal for 2019 but will also begin to look for other options for that one season in the event a deal cannot be reached.

Will the legendary “Raider Nation” follow the club to Las Vegas? That remains to be seen.

What we know for now is one of the longest-running sagas in the history of the modern era of the NFL has come to an end with a Davis-owned franchise now destined for a permanent home in the Nevada desert.

Dunham’s hot hitting lands 1st MAC West honor DAILY CHRONICLE

sports@daily-chronicle.com Northern Illinois freshman Jacob Dunham made the most of his first Mid-American Conference baseball series.

The freshman catcher went 9 for 12 during a three-game sweep at Toledo and was named the MAC West Player of the Week. Dunham, who leads the Huskies with a .442 batting average on the season, went a combined 7 for 8 in the final two games against the Rockets – including a perfect 4 for 4 with an RBI single in the 9-3 victory in the finale.

The Huskies (7-16 overall, 3-0 in MAC West) entered conference play with a 4-16 record before sweeping the Rockets dramatic and convincing fashion. In the first game, the Huskies exploded for 17 hits in a 16-2 victory. On the following day, the Huskies scored three runs in the eighth inning to force extra innings – eventually winning, 7-4. In the finale, NIU scored five runs in the top of the ninth for a 9-3 win.

“This was a tremendous start to MAC play,” coach Mike Kunigonis said on Sunday. “We showed up and played a complete 27-plus innings this weekend.”

The Huskies will have a nonconference game at Illinois-Chicago today

before their home conference-opening series against Bowling Green starting Friday.

Knights start trip with win: The Kane-

land softball team kicked off its trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with an 18-4 win against Ripley on Monday.

Hayley Roach had four hits in the win – including three triples, two of which came in the Knights’ 11-run third.

Morgan Weber, Donatella Sommesi and Lexi Abruzzo had multi-hit games for the Knights a well.

DeKalb falls in eight: Rylee Levine hit two home runs, but the Barbs took a road loss, 11-10 in eight innings, at Geneva.

The Barbs (2-1) pounded out 13 hits in the loss – Payton Montgomery, Skylar Harring, Levine, Torrie Newport and McKenzie Riggs had two each.

The Barbs host South Elgin at 1 p.m. today.

Continued from page 15 Barbs’ 400-meter and 800-meter relays that qualified for the state meet. Green has widely praised Buggs’ potential and ability.

She and the Barbs also had a widely successful 2016-17 indoor track and field season. They won the Northern Illinois Big 12 indoor meet with 110 points – more than enough for comfortable victories over Yorkville (85.5) and Kaneland (66). Buggs was the conference champ in the 60-meter dash and, at the Illinois Top Times Championships, she took sixth in the 60 and the 200-meter dash.

Junior jumper Jasmine Kemp also returns after a strong sophomore campaign that ended with her qualifying for the Class 3A State Championships in the high jump. During last year’s conference meet, Kemp took second in the triple jump and high jump and was third in the long jump.

“Last year, the expectations weren’t as high as this year,” Kemp said. “We really want it, because we lost by I don’t know how many points. I think we can do great things this season. We keep breaking records every day.”

The Barbs will need to replace sectional 1,600-meter champion Christina Ryzhov, who is playing soccer for the Barbs. However, sophomore Katherine

Olsen took first place in the 1,600-meter run in the indoor conference meet.

Also, DeKalb lost 300-meter hurdle state champion Savannah Long, who now is on the track team at Southern Illinois. Despite the big hole left by Long, who was a major point-getter for the Barbs last year, Green has high hopes for freshman hurdler Bri Barwick.

“I think she’s going to be pretty good,” Green said of Barwick. “She’s already tying Savannah’s records as a freshman. I don’t know how the outdoor will look in the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles, and you can’t replace a Savannah. She’s one of those athletes that you wish you had every year.”

Long’s younger sister, Sierra, who is a junior, likely will be a major contributor for the Barbs this season.

The Barbs have at least six freshmen on varsity, and each of the four relay teams likely will have a ninth-grader on it. Green said he talked with his team and told them they could help put the Barbs on the map in girls track and field and bring a Northern Illinois Big 12 conference title to DeKalb.

“They want a first conference championship in school history in outdoor,” Green said. “They’ve never won it before. We all want it – to bring something and continue to make history and break records every weekend.

The argument against an annual physical is that, for healthy adults, the tests are unnecessary. However, we believe that our approach yields a multidimensional picture of a person’s health journey. It makes it more likely we will catch certain conditions early, when they are easier and less costly to cure. In our opinion, the annual physical exam empowers our patients and paves the way to better health.

Dear Doctor: When I was growing up, I saw my doctor annually for a physical exam. So I was surprised when my daughter told me that her physician doesn’t believe in them. Do you agree? If not, what should a physical exam include?

Dear Reader: Although there’s a trend toward doing away with an annual checkup for healthy adults, both of us believe in and support the practice of a yearly physical exam. It’s covered by most insurance policies and, at the very least, is an opportunity to reconnect with your primary care physician. When the annual exam becomes more than just an exercise in gathering data, it’s an extremely useful tool for both the physician and the patient.

What exactly does a yearly exam consist of? That depends on each physician. Considering that the annual checkup has been one of the cornerstones of primary care, it’s a bit of a surprise to note that there are no guidelines or consensus statements regarding what the visit should entail. We can’t speak for other physicians here, but can instead explain what we do in our practices and why.

In addition to performing a head-to-toe exam, we approach the annual exam as a chance to help our patients take stock. We review the previous year and plan for the future. We go over any active problems the patient may have, and evaluate how a treatment plan is (or isn’t) working.

We review any medications the patient is taking, with an eye to either renewing, changing or eliminating them. We update family medical histories to pinpoint any potential hereditary risk factors, such as certain cancers, coronary artery disease or Alzheimer’s disease.

You are within your rights to express your concern, but if she wants to go, you cannot stop her.

If I were her mother, I’d approach it this way: Offer to take care of your grandchild while she visits the baby’s daddy. That way she can get a look at how he’s living and what he is doing. Suggest she take lots of photos with her. But unless she is absolutely sure that the environment is safe for her child, the little one should stay north of the border.

Dear Abby: My boyfriend’s friend “Keira” moved back here to help take care of his mom.

He has known her for more than 10 years.

They didn’t have an intimate relationship; it was more of a friendship than anything. He’s very loving toward me and treats me like gold.

Ben Kohli moved to DeKalb in 2000, and completed his MFA degree in painting at Northern Illinois University in 2003. He currently lives in the heart of downtown DeKalb, and is the night manager for American Liquors.

Ben bought his first guitar when he was 16, which he still has today. Not long after this initial purchase, he began writing and recording his own original music. Being self-taught on the guitar, Ben describes himself as a “life-long beginner.”

His musical influences are broad, and include The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, Neil Young, and Eddie Vedder to name a few.
