Where did she learn such language? POLL YESTERDAY’S

Oops, Hannah Jo swore again! I wonder where in the world she gets that from?

It has to be someone she spends a lot of time with. Is it from her father who occasionally lets out a swear word? I know it is not from her fantastic sitter.

The only other possible culprit would have to be me. I am going to take ownership here and tell the world it is 90 percent me.

She spends the most time with me and has picked up many of my idiosyncrasies.

Believe me when I say I try not to curse, but for some reason I have always had a bit of a potty mouth.

When I get passionate about a topic I sometimes try to make my point by using obscenities.

On a side note, I have heard that people with higher IQs do swear more frequently than their counterparts. Also, when I injure myself, sometimes I can’t control what I blurt out.

Hannah Jo apparently has picked up my bad habit.

At first, she was just using the word to mimic me. It seems with practice, however, she has learned to actually use the word in the correct context.

I know this sounds horrible to say, but when she uses the swear word in the correct format, I tend chuckle a little bit.

I do try to rectify the situation by saying, “Don’t use words like mama.”

Please use shoot the boot or bologna.

I have put her in time out, as well. I have yet to do the soap in the mouth, because I think she is too young.

Luckily, she has the grace to do her swearing in private for now. I cringe at the day when she will blurt out the swears in public.

I can imagine the judgment that will befall me.

And guess what? I don’t care!

I have to be secure in the fact that I am a good mother and can’t be shamed just because my daughter swore!

NEW YORK – Arnold Schwarzenegger said Friday that he’s through with “The New Celebrity Apprentice,” and he’s blaming President Donald Trump for the television reality show’s recent poor performance.

The former California governor said he wouldn’t mind working with NBC and producer Mark Burnett again “on a show that doesn’t have this baggage.”

Schwarzenegger replaced the president as host of the show, but Trump remained as an executive producer. The president taunted Schwarzenegger for the show’s recent poor performance in the ratings, even mocking him during an address at the National Prayer Breakfast.

The show, which wrapped up its 15th season

last month, averaged fewer than 5 million viewers an episode. That was lower than any other incarnation except for a 2010 Trump-hosted edition without celebrities, and the most poorly rated edition among the youthful viewers NBC cares most about, the Nielsen company said.

Even if he were asked again, Schwarzenegger said he wouldn’t want to do it.

“With Trump being involved in the show, people have a bad taste and don’t want to participate as a spectator or as a sponsor or in any other way support the show,” he said in an interview with the website Empire. “It’s a very divisive period now, and I think this show got caught up in all that division.”

NBC had no immediate comment about whether the show would return with a new host.

Petition started to bring Metra to DeKalb; cost obstacle

DeKALB – David Gregoire of DeKalb said he supports the idea of bringing commuter rail service to town, because it would be easier to visit his grandma and other family in Batavia.

“I’m born and raised in Batavia, and I don’t have a license, and Elburn’s the closest one,” he said. “So I don’t see why they don’t do [it] with that [train station] right there.”

For Eric Gardner of DeKalb, the convenience would be a closer drop-off place for loved ones going out of town.

“I drove to Elburn last week and dropped my girlfriend off at the train station,” Gardner said. “It would be nice, so I didn’t have to drive so far.”

The call for passenger train service in DeKalb has resurfaced with a petition calling to bring it back after nearly half a century, but the barriers that have prevented a train from stopping in town remain.

The last passenger train, called the Kate Shelley, stopped in DeKalb in April 1971, 118 years after the first had ridden the same rails. The passenger service, which connected DeKalb with Chicago as part of a line between Chicago and Clinton, Iowa, was discontinued because it was not considered profitable.

An online petition that started in February to bring Metra service to DeKalb has slightly more than 1,000 supporters. It cites the limited options for traveling to the nearest train station, located 18 miles away in Elburn, for Northern Illinois University students and others without cars.

It also lists a potential short-term solution as expanding the existing shuttle service, which runs between NIU and Elburn twice a week on Fridays and Sundays.

DeKalb County Board Chairman Mark Pietrowski Jr. said a more consistent shuttle bus is a more feasible option, as the cost of installing a third track for passenger service would cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

“We can always keep an eye on the possibility, but it would take a major U.S. investment,” he said. “We would have to rely on lots of grants.”

gional Transportation Authority and contribute sales tax to the agency – something public officials have found to be a turn-off when the issue has

come up in the past, Pietrowski said.

RTA has oversight over the Chicago Transit Authority, Metra and Pace and serves Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake,

McHenry and Will counties.

The RTA tax is 1.25 percent on sales in Cook County and 0.75 percent on sales in the collar counties of DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will, according to the RTA website.

Susan Massel, RTA’s director of communications and public affairs, said any county or part of a county can become part of the RTA region; however, the RTA is not currently looking to expand because of its own budget constraints.

“The six-county geography of the RTA region is defined in the RTA Act, a state statute,” she said. “The geography has never been amended, and it would take an act of Legislature to do so.”

Pietrowski said voters also would have to approve a referendum to become part of the RTA’s taxing authority.

DeKalb murder suspect likely to stay jailed

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – An 18-year-old Chicago man accused of first-degree murder in the 2016 shooting death of a DeKalb man will likely remain in jail until trial as a judge denied his motion for a lower bond.

David T. Walls, 18, of Chicago, is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated unlawful use of a firearm in connection with the Oct. 6 slaying of 25-year-old Debrece G. Shields.

Walls was arrested along with Nico L. Griggs, 27, of Park Forest, after their getaway vehicle ran out of gas on Peace Road in Sycamore, police said.

Walls’ attorney, Nate Gordon, asked Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert to reduce his client’s bond from $5 million to $500,000, at a hearing earlier this week. The reduction would have allowed Walls to be released from jail by posting $50,000 bail. Instead, he has to post $500,000.

Walls, who has no criminal history, graduated from the Chicago Public School system in 2016 and is the oldest child of a single mother who depends on him for help with his two younger siblings, Gordon said. The defense attorney said his client was never found with a weapon. In a bond reduction motion, Gordon said that while at the DeKalb County Jail “there have been occasions where other inmates have attempted to assault” his client.

Stephanie Klein opposed the bond reduction. She noted that Walls was arrested shortly after the Jeep he was in ran out of gas. Two guns were found near the vehicle, including a 9 mm handgun that matched the same manufacturer and caliber as spent casings found at the crime scene – a parking lot behind an apartment building at 810 Kimberly Drive.

“While the gun wasn’t found on the defendant, it was certainly found in close proximity to him,” Klein said.

She said that the strength of the prosecution’s case against Walls was one of the 34 factors to be considered in setting bond. Klein detailed the evidence connecting Walls to the crime, including witness reports, surveillance video and what appeared to be blood stains on his pants and shoes.

Gordon disputed some of the evidence. He said that at least one witness told police the shooters were a man and woman in a black vehicle, not a tan Jeep with a dangling front license plate.

Stuckert denied the bond reduction, saying that there had been no changes in Walls’ circumstances since he was first arrested and bond was initially set that would entitle such a reduction. Park district outlines procedure to fill board opening

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – After DeKalb Park Board Commissioner Bryant Irving stepped down from his position in January because of health concerns, the district outlined a process for filling his seat during a special meeting Monday.

The four remaining members ruled that President Phil Young would set up a general schedule and parameters for the candidate applica-

tion process.

Young said a form and brief questionnaire would soon be posted on the district’s website for anyone interested in joining the board. He hopes to have the application up by next week.

A closed meeting will then be held to interview suitable candidates for the two-year term.

If a consensus can be reached on a candidate, their appointment will be put up to a vote, which would require at least three of the four commissioners’ approval.

Young said he wants someone to be appointed before or shortly after the April 4 election.

“This should be pretty straightforward,” Young said. “There’s no expectation names will be confidential.

In my view, applicants’ names should be open to the public for full transparency.”

Young and Commissioner Dag Grada are both running unopposed for their seats in April’s election. Young said if there had been an opponent in either race, they would have been

contacted about joining the board.

It is recommended that applicants have lived in DeKalb for at least a year, preferably have experience in an elected position and be willing to serve the public.

“One of the biggest things to understand is that you’re doing this to represent the whole board and the public, not just for your own reasons,” Young said. “The fact that the position is unpaid is good, because it shows that you’re doing it because you care about the community.”

Born: September 14, 1924; in Chicago, IL Died: March 2, 2017; in Shabbona, IL Arnold E. Bergman, age 92, of Shabbona passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Prairie Crossing Living and Rehabilitation Center in

Shabbona.

He was born September 14, 1924 in Chicago, the son of Otto L. and Anna (Grimsby) Bergman.

Arnold served in the United States Army Air Corps as a medic in World War II and was honorably discharged in November of 1945.

He was retired from Ottawa Community Hospital.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne (Diane) Bergman and Robert (Susan) Bergman, both of DeKalb; a daughter, Beth (Charles) McRoberts of Piedmont, Missouri; six grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Larraine; and four brothers, Leander, Edwin,

Martin and John.

At Arnold’s request, there will be no services. Following cremation, his cremains and those of his late wife, Larraine, will be interred at Ft. Sam Houston Cemetery in Texas where his parents and brothers are interred.

Arrangements were completed by Jacobson Funeral Home in Shabbona.

A company known for its ice cream mixes is moving to Sandwich after 45 years in Yorkville.

Steve Steinwart, president of Meadowvale Inc., said the company found a property at 1305 E. 6th St. in Sandwich that will give them room for future growth.

“We hope to be in by December,” he said. “We’re in the process of getting our bids in. Once that process is complete, we’ll select a general contractor and get moving. It’s a rather aggressive time frame, but that’s what we’ve got ahead of us.”

The company was founded by Steinwart’s uncle, John Steinwart, in 1967 in Joliet. John Steinwart moved the company to Yorkville, locating in the Fox Industrial Park. The company, one of the first to locate in the industrial park, has been at that location ever since. Steve Steinwart became president of the company in 1993.

“We’re going to have quite a bit more space over there,” Steinwart said.

“We’ve got: A. more land and B. just more space under roof.”

Steinwart said the company’s current space in Yorkville is about 30,000 square

feet. The new main building at the Sandwich location is 80,000 square feet, and Steinwart estimates the company will use two-thirds of it initially. There also is a 10,000-square-foot building that will serve as a wastewater treatment facility and a 1,500-square-foot building that will be used for storage, he said.

“We wanted to stay here [in Yorkville] and you plan accordingly, and you end up having to maybe put things together that don’t make for the most efficient flow of things,” he said.

“The process can get a little bit hamstrung. We’ve done well, but as we grow, we just needed to have more room and do it more efficiently than we’re doing it now. This will allow for that, and we’re excited about it.”

In recent years, the company has provided mixes for two family-owned frozen custard companies that are growing, Steinwart said.

“We’ve realized most of our growth in the frozen custard side of things,” he said. “We’ve partnered up with a couple of growing frozen custard chains, one based out of Wichita, Kansas, and another based out of Springfield, Missouri. They’ve both done quite well and we’re blessed to be a part of that growth.

Pietrowski said DeKalb County has donated land to the Voluntary Action Center for an expanded facility and a park-and-ride bus shuttle system for the train; however, VAC has been turned down several times for the federal TIGER grant needed for the project.

“I’m encouraged by the passion of the people passing out this petition; it would be a big boost for the local economy,” Pietrowski said. “Hopefully, they can be just as energized with plan B at the moment.”

“We would have to put a referendum out to voters to see if [DeKalb County] should be included in the RTA district,” Pietrowski said. “We’re not at that stage at all; it would be years and years off, if ever.”

The RTA’s recent capital assessment report projected that $37.7 billion is needed over the next decade for maintaining, repairing and replacing existing infrastructure.

“The region has significant unmet capital meets and is focused on maintaining the existing system,” Massel said.

Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said based on the RTA’s estimate that Metra will need $12 billion over the next decade to maintain its system, the train system is not currently focused on expansion projects.

Gillis said if Metra service were to expand to DeKalb, it would use the Union Pacific West Line, which passes from West Chicago to stops in Geneva, La Fox and Elburn.

Gangs reap guns from trains in Chicago

CHICAGO – When street-gang thieves slipped with ease into a Norfolk Southern rail yard on Chicago’s South Side and ripped locks off one train, they likely expected to see merchandise such as toys or tennis shoes. What they beheld instead was a gangster’s jackpot: box after box of brand-new guns.

The guns had been en route from New Hampshire manufacturer Sturm, Ruger & Co. to Spokane, Washington.

Instead, the .45-caliber Ruger revolvers and other firearms spread quickly into surrounding high-crime neighborhoods. Along with two other major gun thefts within three years, the robbery helped fuel a wave of violence on Chicago’s streets.

The 2015 heist of the 111 guns, as well as one in 2014 and another in September from the same 63rd Street Rail Yard highlight a tragic confluence. Chicago’s biggest rail yards are on the gang- and homicide-plagued South and West sides where most of the city’s 762 killings happened last year.

Founder of tech company gets 9-year fraud sentence

CHICAGO – The founder of an Elk Grove Village technology company has been sentenced to nine years in prison for a scheme that bilked investors out of $9 million.

Seventy-one-year-old Gregory Webb was sentenced Wednesday by a federal judge in Chicago.

The founder and chief executive officer of InfrAegis Inc. was convicted last year of nine counts of mail and wire fraud.

Federal prosecutors said he defrauded more than 200 investors, including Chicago firefighters and other first-responders, through his company.

Webb had portrayed the company as a thriving business on the verge of signing billion-dollar contracts with the city of Chicago and government agencies and municipalities worldwide. But prosecutors said there were no pending

Man sentenced to prison for killing roommate in ’14

WHEATON – A man convicted of killing his roommate during an argument hours after moving into the man’s Naperville townhome in 2014 has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Twenty-four-year-old Grant Muren learned his punishment Thursday. He was found guilty last year of second-degree murder, aggravated arson and residential arson after a bench trial in DuPage County.

Muren’s lawyer had argued at trial that the killing was self-defense.

Prosecutors said Muren beat and strangled 55-year-old Charles Clark after they had a sexual encounter and Clark told Muren to leave the home.

Authorities said the Clark met Muren after the younger man answered Clark’s Craigslist posting for a new roommate.

Investigators said that Muren tried to burn a lease agreement and cause an explosion at the home with natural gas.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Some Democrats worry the appointment of a Jeff Sessions subordinate to oversee an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election won’t be a clean enough break from the embattled attorney general.

But the veteran prosecutor in line for the job may be uniquely politically palatable.

Rod Rosenstein, who faces his confirmation hearing next week for the role of deputy attorney general, was appointed top federal prosecutor in Maryland by George W. Bush and remained in the post for the entire Obama administration. That staying power, extraordinary for a position that routinely turns over with changes in the White House, lends weight to the reputation he’s cultivated as an apolitical law enforcement official.

“He is so well-respected.

He cannot be influenced, he cannot be bought, he cannot be pressured because of outside political forces,” said Baltimore criminal defense attorney Steven Silverman, who has known Rosenstein for years.

Sessions recused himself from any Trump-Russia investigation Thursday after the Justice Department acknowledged he had spoken twice with the Russian ambassador last year and had failed to disclose the contacts during his Senate confirmation process.

Sessions said he had not tried to mislead anyone but could have been more careful in his answers.

The new attorney general’s recusal handed authority for an investigation – for now – to his deputy, Dana Boente, another longtime federal prosecutor who has the post in an acting capacity. Boente was appointed U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia in 2015 by Barack Obama and

challenging environment in which to come in as the deputy attorney general than what we have now,” said Jason Weinstein, who served under Rosenstein in the U.S. attorney’s office in Maryland. “Having said that, I can’t imagine a better person for the job right now than Rod.” Regardless, the Sessions recusal did little to assuage demands from some Democrats that the investigation be removed entirely from the Justice Department and given to an outside prosecutor.

Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, called the Sessions recusal “deeply inadequate” and said he was troubled by the number of Trump associates who he contended have either made misleading statements or concealed communications with Russia.

“I also think for the public to have confidence that any prosecutorial decision is made truly independent of the administration, that the extra remedy of a special counsel is really warranted here,” Schiff said in an interview.

Trump said he would ask lawmakers to pass a bill that would fund school choice for disadvantaged young people, including minority children. He did not offer any details.

Among his guests were Gov. Rick Scott, Sen. Marco Rubio and Denisha Merriweather, who used Florida’s school voucher program to attend a private high school that she credits with turning her life around. Many of St. Andrew’s students attend the school using the same voucher program as Merriweather, White House spokesman Ninio Fetalvo said.

“We want millions more to have the same chance to achieve the great success that you’re achieving,” Trump said. The president also told Latrina Peters-Gipson, the school principal, that “the love you have for what you do is really fantastic.”

Despite being at the school, Trump also noted anew that he captured Florida in last year’s election. After the visit, he flew to his coastal home in Palm Beach and later attended a Republican National Committee fundraiser that was closed to the news media. Trump was scheduled to return to the White House late Sunday.

DUBLIN – A mass grave containing the remains of babies and young children has been discovered at a former Catholic orphanage in Ireland, government-appointed investigators announced Friday in a finding that offered the first conclusive proof after a historian’s efforts to trace the fates of nearly 800 children who perished there.

The judge-led Mother and Baby Homes Commission said excavations since November at the site of the former Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, County Galway, had found an underground structure divided into 20 chambers containing “significant quantities of human remains.”

The commission said DNA analysis of selected remains confirmed the ages of the dead ranged from 35 weeks to 3 years old and were buried chiefly in the 1950s, when the overcrowded facility was one of more than a dozen in Ireland offering shelter to orphans, unwed mothers and their children. The Tuam home closed in 1961.

The report found that the dead children may have been placed in underground chambers originally used to hold sewage. Corless said she found records stating that the sewage systems were used until 1937, when the home was connected to a modern water supply.

A decommissioned septic tank had been “filled with rubble and debris and then covered with top soil” and did not appear to contain remains, the report said. But excavators found children’s remains inside a neighboring connected structure that might have been used to contain sewage or waste water.

Thumbs-up to Sycamore retailer plans Thumbs-up: To a new business proposed for Sycamore. Grand Rapids, Michigan-based retailer Meijer has proposed building a new store and gas station on 18 acres of land northwest of the intersection of Peace Road and DeKalb Avenue in Sycamore. The store would go on land that was annexed to Sycamore in 2006 but has been vacant. We’re excited at the prospect of a new employer that would add jobs, increase local property values without adding students to local schools, generate sales tax revenue and provide another grocery option for the area.

Thumbs-down: To February tornadoes.

The severe weather that brought hail and heavy rain to the DeKalb area Tuesday also spawned an EF3 tornado with winds faster than 130 mph. The twister uprooted a tree, which fell on and killed 31-year-old David A. Johnson and his 76-year-old father-inlaw, Wayne Tuntland, in Ottawa. Another man was killed in Crossville, in southern Illinois, in another tornado. While these winter-season storms aren’t unprecedented, they’re not common either. These storms are a fact of life this time of year, and we hope that all will take precautions if they find themselves in the path of a storm.

Thumbs-up: To highlighting the importance of reading. Children have so many digital options for entertaining themselves, but sometimes the analog experience of reading words on paper is just as fulfilling.

At Clinton Rosette Middle School in DeKalb on Thursday, local volunteers came forward to read with students and share how reading had been an important part of their lives. Reading is a critical skill for being a lifelong learner, and it’s encouraging to see adults modeling positive behavior for local students.

Thumbs-down: To another false start in Springfield budget negotiations. This week, negotiations on a so-called “grand bargain” – which would include a big tax increase on Illinois’ working families – came to a stop yet again. Senate President John Cullteron, D-Chicago, this time accuses Gov. Bruce Rauner of insincerity in negotiations and being unwilling to compromise. Meanwhile, our state continues on, its financial woes only growing worse, and two years gone by without a spending plan. Good grief.

Concealed carry for everybody

It can be useful and efficient when one state recognizes a license or certification issued by another, as lawyers and bear hunters can attest. When it comes to permits to carry concealed weapons, however, this rationale doesn’t apply.

It’s worth examining why.

According to Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who introduced the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act this week, the bill “strengthens both the constitutional right of law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and the power of states to implement laws best-suited for the folks who live there.”

The bill does indeed strengthen the constitutional right of law-abiding citizens to protect themselves using a firearm.

Unfortunately, it also strengthens the right of many others who are not law-abiding, and who are more prone to aggression than protection. For example, stalkers, drunken drivers and abusive

partners can carry a concealed weapon in some states. Other states prohibit them from doing so. Under Cornyn’s bill, those people would be able to take their concealed, loaded weapons anywhere.

In effect, the bill would adopt as a national standard the lowest common denominator of state regulations. Every state would be required to honor concealed-carry permits issued by any other state, no matter how shabby (Hello, Florida!) or nonexistent (11 states require no permit) its process is.

There is nowhere near sufficient evidence to conclude that concealed-carry policies make anyone safer, although there is intriguing evidence that it may have the opposite effect. (Why is it that politicians who make broad, unsubstantiated claims about the safety of firearms are so often adamantly opposed to funding research that might buttress such claims?)

Cornyn’s assertion about “law-abiding citizens” protecting themselves is ironclad, however, compared with his statement about states’ rights. Any reading of the legislation must conclude that it forces states and localities to cede control over their communities to distant states.

California, with 39 million people and more than a dozen major cities, would be required to adopt the laissez-faire concealed carry standards of Wyoming, with fewer than a million people.

Cornyn’s concern for “laws best-suited for the folks who live there” is hard to credit.

Concealed carry reciprocity isn’t about constitutional rights.

It certainly isn’t about creating laws “best-suited” to localities.

It’s about the gun movement’s relentless effort to militarize every corner of American culture and civic life – without a shred of credible evidence that it makes Americans safe.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

To the Editor: This letter is regarding health care, immigration and the economy.

While reading recent opinion polls over the status of the Affordable Care Act and how people feel the government should or should not proceed in dealing with the ACA, it may be surprising to many people to know that the plan is headed for failure based on economics.

This is regardless of which party or what congressmen are in office. The major insurance carriers are pulling out of the markets.

The whole program will collapse because of this alone.

The better thing that Republicans could have said would be to repeal and repair.

The thing that people do not want to have happen, i.e. losing health care coverage, would happen if no action is taken.

Also, many people do not want to fund programs that they are morally opposed to, as is the current case.

Secondly, President Donald Trump should take steps to try to prevent dangerous people from entering our country. He has not proposed a blanket stoppage for all immigration. Many European cities are experiencing violence such as Paris, France

and Malmo, Sweden, which now has more rapes per capita than any European city.

Our country can provide assistance to the victims of war in a variety of ways that do not necessitate a mass influx onto our social system that is already taxed and struggling.

Thirdly, the economy could stand a chance at improving the jobs market. Good jobs that include benefits and a career path. We have an opportunity for that boost with a president who understands business.

Bringing in people from Wall Street to advise on economic policy and help develop trade deals that benefit us a bit more, while still taking advantage of opening up trade markets, does not sound like such a bad idea.

Hopefully, people will take stock of what is truly being proposed, research the facts surrounding each topic and see that there are common concerns shared by all. The key is not to resist just to resist, but rather to be for something substantive. There are a myriad of parallel causes right here, locally, although not as glamorous or feel-good as protesting a president.

He was stopped only by the sequester, that automatic budget-cutting law passed by both parties in Congress in a pathetic admission that no majority of legislators will put their name on spending limits.

The sequester delayed our bankruptcy a little.

But Obama and Congress have mostly done away with it, and now Trump and Congress will reverse what little is left of military sequester cuts.

Bad idea. The military needs cuts just like every other government bureaucracy.

They waste money on administrators, overpriced contractors, and even on those occasions when they want to do the right thing and cut some waste, Congress insists they spend the money anyway.

To the Editor: We have some decisions to make April 4.

At a DeKalb mayoral candidates’ forum a few days ago, I was able to hear all the candidates answer questions and voice their reasons why they should be mayor.

I noticed one candidate who owns a business, which is great.

But so far what I’ve noticed is when a business owner takes the reins of the top spot in government, the outcome hasn’t thus far been very rewarding for We the People.

Example: Gov. Bruce Rauner hasn’t been able to get much done; however, that’s not entirely his fault. Owners normally require things be done their way and if not, someone gets fired.

Government doesn’t function that way.

Also, if you own your own business, let’s be real, your business, that’s your priority.

The candidates were pretty much on the same line as Mayor John Rey’s stances, even how he handles office hours. They spoke of growing our relationship with our great hometown Northern Illinois University. Since Rey has been in office, he has strengthened our relationship immensely with NIU and will continue the process.

Trump was right when he said he wanted cuts, not increases. He was right to point out that only five NATO countries meet the minimum spending they promised – 2 percent of GDP. Germany spends only 1.19 percent.

Why does America subsidize Germany’s defense? Campaigning, Trump said that “the U.S. must be prepared to let these countries defend themselves.”

Good idea. What happened to that?

NIU is now able fly athletes out of DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport and back, instead of having to drive to Rockford, and opponents are able to do the same thing. We wouldn’t have the equipment needed to make this possible without our city officials and Rey’s backing.

I have been in Springfield with our mayor and watched him fight for our portion of the state pie for our airport. Some businesses in our area would not be here and some wouldn’t be expanding if not for the mayor’s efforts to promote the airport.

We have more than 400 new jobs in Park 88. We have Popeye’s here, Sonic is in the building phase, that’s just a couple of businesses here or coming. I won’t bore you with all the things Rey has done in our community; you can Google that. I will say that with his education, his experience in the positions he’s held, the things he is doing now and his love and dedication for our city, Rey deserves another term.

Mayor John Rey will keep our city moving forward. Our city is a diamond in the rough and with the proper cutting and polishing, DeKalb will shine as bright as she should. I believe Rey is the one to do the job.

Donald Trump once wanted to cut military spending.

Before running for president, he said Congress’ automatic “sequestration” cuts didn’t go far enough, that they were “a very small percentage of the cuts that should be made.”

Then he ran for office and said he would “make our military so big, so powerful, so strong that nobody – absolutely nobody – is going to mess with us.” He promised to provide 50,000 more soldiers, 74 ships and 87 more fighter jets.

This week, he followed through. He proposed increasing military spending by $54 billion a year.

Why did he change his mind?

Even libertarianish Republicans, such as Sen. Rand Paul, call for increased spending at election time. It’s assumed voters like hearing that.

But maybe they don’t.

When Americans were asked, “If one additional tax dollar were raised in the U.S., where should that dollar go?” only 12 percent said the military, according to a new poll by the Charles Koch Institute and the Center for the National Interest.

SYCAMORE – Jack Mizgalski’s 3-pointer with 30 seconds left in overtime against the Kaneland boys basketball team put the finishing touches on what he essentially called a revenge tour through the Class 3A Sycamore Regional.

Fifth-seeded Sycamore beat No. 8 Kaneland, 37-36, Friday night, two days after beating Genoa-Kingston in the semifinal.

“This is one of the best feelings ever,” Mizgalski said. “[Senior point guard Ty Sulaver] and I were talking about it, and we were sophomores, and the first game we lost to Genoa. Then [last] year we lost to Kaneland in the championship. Now this year we beat Genoa, and in the championship we beat Kaneland. It couldn’t be any better to make up those loses. It can’t be a better story line than that.”

The win Friday puts the Spartans (13-15) in the Genoa Sectional, in which they will face Belvidere, which was a No. 5 seed on its half of the bracket. The game tips off at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Both the Knights and Spartans spent a big chunk of the game running down the clock, including Kaneland taking 90 seconds off early in the overtime. Kaneland’s Jake Hed got the first points in the extra session, making a 3-pointer with 1:53 left. Jordan Tolzin answered with a putback 30 seconds later for Sycamore.

The Knights (10-21) almost ran off another 30 seconds before Sycamore fouled. Hed made one of his two free throws to put Kaneland ahead, 36-34, with 49.3 seconds left.

On the next possession, Sulaver drove to the basket, then kicked the ball out to Mizgalski, who was open in the corner and drained the shot with 30 seconds left.

“It was just Ty creating, and he did a great job with it,” Mizgalski said. “My guy helped off, and I was open. It was a great pass by him and I made the shot.”

Both Sycamore coach Ryan Picolotti and Kaneland coach Joe Conroy said it was a heads-up play by Sulaver.

Both teams had trouble getting their offense going, and it was exacerbated

by Kaneland running big stretches off the clock early. The Knights led 5-3 after one quarter, but a 9-0 run in the second by the Spartans – seven points from James Marcinkowski – put the Spartans back on top.

Conroy said he thought the Knights would benefit from a shorter game – especially after Kaneland senior Dan Franck got in foul trouble.

“I know the crowd doesn’t enjoy that type of game, but we don’t play to the crowd, we play to win,” Conroy said.

“We had to do whatever we could to get to the third quarter within striking distance to get Dan back in. We knew we weren’t going to win the battle of the boards without him on the floor.”

The Knights retook the lead late in the third, 22-21, on a layup by Franck.

But Sycamore answered with a 3-pointer by Ethan Heinrich, who finished with a team-high eight points. He hit two 3-pointers and came close to a third, but his foot was on the line.

Sycamore kept the lead until Kaneland’s Kyle Stuart hit a 3-pointer with 2:24 left to tie the score at 32. After a timeout by the Spartans, they ran the clock down, but Sycamore’s Keyshawn Stallworth was called for a foul away from the ball with 1:06 left.

Kaneland then held the ball and tried a late 3, but Franck missed to end regulation.

After Mizgalski’s 3 in overtime, Kaneland held the ball for the last shot, but Mason Conroy missed a long 3-pointer as time expired.

“The game doesn’t come down to one play,” Conroy said. “It doesn’t come down to Dan missing a shot at the end of regulation. It doesn’t come down to Mason missing a shot at the end of overtime. It came down the rebounds we didn’t get.”

Sycamore had a 24-20 edge on the boards in the game, and 11-4 on the offensive glass. The Spartans had 10 second-chance points while the Knights didn’t have any.

Central Catholic on Tuesday in a semifinal.

“Truthfully, the kids gave it all they had,” Conroy said. “We’ve had a lot of injuries, and just to watch the resilience of the kids bouncing back, then to lose by one in overtime, we can’t hang our heads on that.

“All the ups, all the downs, all the long stretches of losses, they never gave up and the never quit,” Conroy said. “And they got themselves to a championship.

You can’t ask for much more than that.”

By the numbers: Kaneland’s Stuart led all scorers with 11 points, while Hed added 10. Franck scored three but had a team-leading six rebounds. For Sycamore, Mizgalski finished with seven points and six rebounds, and Sulaver had seven points and five boards. Stallworth had four points, eight rebounds and three blocks.

Beyond the stats: Mizgalski finished the game shooting 2 of 7 from the floor, and didn’t hit a field goal in the first three quarters (four attempts).

They said it: “When it counted, he made that wide-open look,” Picolotti said about Mizgalski. “Obviously, they were tight on Jack most of the game, but we found him and he knocked it down. That’s what seniors, especially three-year varsity players, do.”

Golladay’s ascent lands him in Indy

NIU wideout says his size, catching radius, athleticism his strengths

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com INDIANAPOLIS – Kenny Golladay had one offer coming out of St. Rita – the University of North Dakota.

Five years later, Golladay is fresh off two successful seasons at Northern Illinois and working out with the top prospects at the NFL Scouting Combine. It’s been an impressive ascent for the Englewood native.

“I’m glad [North Dakota] took a chance on a South Side kid from Chicago,” Golladay said Friday, discussing his college path. “Then, I played my true freshman and true sophomore year, and the coaches ended up getting fired. I made my own highlight tape, sent it to my high school coach and asked him to give it to the college coaches coming in recruiting high school kids. NIU jumped on me, and I sat out that first year, 2014, and then 2015 and 2016, hit the ground rolling.”

That might be an understatement, as Golladay had 73 catches for 1,129 yards and 10 scores in DeKalb in 2015 and then 1,156 receiving yards on 87 receptions and eight touchdowns in 2016.

He was second-team All-Mid-American Conference as a junior and first-team as a senior.

He singled out his game against Wyoming this past season (82 yards rushing, 144 yards receiving, three total touchdowns) and the game against Toledo (14 catches for 149 yards and a score) as game tapes he hopes coaches watch.

As one of the bigger receivers, Golladay is priding himself on that frame to set him apart from the rest of the pass catchers.

“My size, catching radius and being a big guy who is very athletic,” Golladay said of his strengths.

Last season, Golladay was used often on jet sweeps, which he said shows

NFL teams his versatility. He had 20 carries for 192 yards and two scores.

Golladay checked in at 6-foot-4, 218 pounds at the combine. An elbow injury in the season finale didn’t deter him in the bench press, as he put up 18 reps, which tied for fifth among receivers.

“I’m at 100 percent,” he said. “I benched today. It was just a little dislocation. No structural damage. Everything is 100 percent.”

A Bears fan growing up, Golladay looked up to players at his position: Devin Hester, Johnny Knox and Brandon Marshall. He said, “it’d be pretty cool going back home” if he had an opportunity to visit, or even play for the Bears.

Coming out of Englewood, Golladay expressed how important it was for him to find football and have the right people around him.

“You’ve got to just go your own direction. Pick your direction,” he said.

“I didn’t want to be outside like that, I wanted to be involved in sports and play football. I kept a level head, and I got parents that keep me on a straight line. I’m just grateful.”

His background and college route means an opportunity to make it in the NFL is that much more important for Golladay.

“It’d be huge,” he said. “Dream come true. I’m just doing everything to the best of my ability to make that happen.”

Top QBs respond to questions about their perceived flaws

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com INDIANAPOLIS – John Elway said there isn’t a “surefire” quarterback in the draft. Mike Mayock said he doesn’t have a quarterback in his top 10.

It’s “poke holes in the quarterback prospects” season, and it’s been heightened for 2017.

No one is lauding this group of quarterbacks. Instead, we’re wondering whether the Browns, 49ers or Bears even would take one in the top three.

And those teams – along with other QB-interested clubs such as the Jets, Bills, Texans, Chiefs or Cardinals – are weighing the weaknesses with the desperation to get it right at quarterback.

The top-three quarterbacks spoke to the media Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine. They all know about the knocks on them and why teams might be leery.

Here’s a look at how North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky, Clemson’s Deshaun Watson and Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer answered those questions:

TRUBISKY

The former Tar Heel’s most glaring drawback is the fact he has only 13 starts under his belt.

“That’s a question everybody’s asking,” Trubisky said. “I think I definitely have enough experience. I only have 13 starts, but I played in 30 games.

I’ve come in off the bench and I’ve seen significant time. … I’m a Mitch Trubisky student of the game and I’ve seen a lot of defenses, and I think that’s going to help me.”

Trubisky spun the fact that he rode the pine for a majority of his time in Chapel Hill – it gave him more time to deal Deshaun with adversity and study Watson in the film room. He also defended his fellow quarterbacks.

“Who’s to say this quarterback class can’t be one of the best? Only the future will tell,” he said.

WATSON

The defending national champion knows that winning pedigree will help his draft stock. How he will handle a pro-style offense, however, is his perceived shortcoming.

“The biggest question that I’ve heard from different coaches was if I can change a protection, run the offense and recognize defensive coverages,” he DeShone Kizer said. “... They know that I’m just some other quarterback that’s running a spread offense. That [I’m a] guy that can operate, make good decisions and recognize what the defense is doing and be successful doing it.”

Watson also has to answer to his 17 interceptions last season.

“If I were in their shoes, I would poke holes, too,” he said. “I take full responsibility in all of that. Sometimes you just have bad luck. Sometimes the defense makes a good play. Sometimes I make a bad throw. … I’ve learned from those mistakes, and I’ve correct-

ed those and (I’m) going to move on from it.”

KIZER

The former Notre Dame quarterback asked the question himself.

“A guy with my size, my arm talent, my understanding of football, why do you go 4-8?” he said. “I’ve answered that question as truthfully as I possibly can, and that’s I didn’t make plays. Again, the ball’s in your hands as a quarterback every play. If you’re going to win games in the fourth quarter, then you’ve got to be the guy making the plays.”

Kizer’s honesty will be refreshing to teams, and he’s well aware of that knock, referencing the 4-8 record twice in his media session, but it hasn’t affected him.

“I’m pretty confident in my abilities,” he said. “I think with my size, my ability to read defenses – both pre- and post-snap – my ability to understand the game and my leadership I was able to develop at Notre Dame put me in position to achieve my goal of playing in the NFL.”

McIlroy feeling better, takes a 2-stroke lead

MEXICO CITY – Sore ribs or sore stomach, it doesn’t seem to matter to Rory McIlroy. After being gone for seven weeks, he took a two-shot lead into the weekend at the Mexico Championship with a chance to return to No. 1 in the world.

McIlroy holed out from 156 yards for eagle Rory McIlroy on the 14th hole, part of a three-hole stretch Friday when he seized control at Chapultepec Golf Club. McIlroy missed putts inside 6 feet on his last three holes – one for par, two for birdie – and still shot a 6-under-par 65.

“Look, I’m in a great position,” McIlroy said. “But I felt like I could have been a few more ahead.”

He got 14 hours of sleep to help overcome a stomach virus and said he was feeling a little better.

His game looked better than ever.

McIlroy was at 9-under 133, two shots ahead of Phil Mickelson (68), Justin Thomas (66) and Ross Fisher (68).

Mickelson will be in the final group on the weekend for the first time since his runner-up finish to Henrik Stenson at Royal Troon in the British Open.

And he got there without his longtime caddie, Jim “Bones” Mackay, who fell ill on fourth hole of the second round and turned the bag over to Mickelson’s younger brother, Tim. Thomas had seven birdies and three bogeys over his last 13 holes.

The Northern Illinois men’s basketball team made a furious comeback in the final minute to get within one possession, but Ball State held on for an 8782 victory in the regular-season finale Friday night in Muncie, Indiana.

With the loss, the Huskies (15-16 overall, 7-11 Mid-American Conference West) will be the No. 9 seed in the MAC tournament and will play at No. 8 Eastern Michigan on Monday night.

The Huskies lost, 84-68, in their regular-season meeting Feb. 25 in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Falling to Ball State (20-11, 11-7 MAC West) on Friday also means the Huskies have lost seven of their past eight games heading into the tournament.

The Huskies sparked a comeback in

the final minute of the loss to the Cardinals, trimming a double-digit deficit to three in less than 30 seconds. After a free throw by Ball State’s Franko House gave the Cardinals an 83-72 lead with 40 seconds remaining, the Huskies went on an 8-0 run – including a 3-pointer by sophomore Austin Pauga, a three-point play by senior Dontel Highsmith and a tip-in by sophomore Levi Bradley – to cut it to 83-80 with 13 seconds left.

Hendricks eases into role of mentor

MESA, Ariz. – For three seasons, Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks has grown into one of the top pitchers in the major leagues, on smarts, command, confidence and one of the most effective changeups in the league.

Now, after winning an ERA title, beating Clayton Kershaw to clinch the Cubs’ first National League pennant in 71 years and starting Game 7 of the Cubs’ first World Series title in 108 years, can Hendricks do anything Kyle Hendricks more for the organization?

Even beyond building on all that success during a 2017 with all eyes upon him?

Some believe he can. Hendricks hopes he can. And, in fact, he’s already doing it.

“He’s a great guy to learn from,” rookie left-hander Rob Zastryzny said.

“A lot of guys say he doesn’t overpower you, but he really does. He overpowers with location. He overpowers you with outthinking you. That’s something that anyone can learn.

“He’s mastered it, and if you can master what he does, then you can pitch like him, then you can be third in Cy Young voting, or whatever he was – I mean, I’ll take any advantage I can get.”

Reds 8, Cubs 4 (Mesa, Ariz.)

The Cubs dropped their second game to the Reds in as many days, 8-4, in Mesa, Arizona. They went scoreless through seven innings after going scoreless through six Thursday. Top prospect Eloy Jimenez hit a solo homer and prospect Yasiel Balaguert belted a three-run shot in the Cubs’ four-run eighth.

HEYWARD WATCH Bounce-back hopeful Jason Heyward Between his thinking-man’s pitching game and his good nature and communication skills, Hendricks is already helping groom other young pitchers coming through the system.

“He enjoys doing that, and we’ve sent a couple young pitchers his way to learn some things from him,” team president Theo Epstein said. “Especially with (Alec) Mills and (Eddie) Butler, two right-handers who have good changeups who are learning how to use them in the big leagues, learning how to throw them right-on-right is important. And Kyle’s one of the best in the league at that.”

Certainly, it’s a reach to look at Hendricks as a part of the Cubs’ vaunted pitching infrastructure led by pitching coach Chris Bosio and unsung strategist Mike Borzello.

But for an organization set up to acquire pitching from all directions, and

seeking ways to strengthen its prospect pipeline, Hendricks could be an especially useful resource over the next several years.

“I hope so. I would love to do it,” said Hendricks, who went 16-8 with a 2.13 ERA last season. “Even when I was in college, by my junior year, I just loved kind of helping out the freshman guys, making them comfortable, bringing them along. I wasn’t offering much as far as advice on pitching at that point – but just to help them out in any way I could. And I think being up here, it’s more of the same.

“You don’t feel it as a responsibility.

I enjoy it.”

He has certainly become a mentor to Zastryzny. A rival scout watching him pitch last year called him a “left-handed Kyle Hendricks” the way he pitched.

And even though the left-right transla-

tion adds a little nuance to the communication, Zastryzny soaks up what he can from Hendricks daily.

“I talk to him a lot about the way he does a bullpen, the way he prepares for games, because I like the way he goes about it,” Zastryzny said. “The way he throws his bullpen, it’s very precise.

He’s not just randomly throwing pitches. Everything has a purpose. That’s kind of how I go about my business now.”

Bosio said he sees Hendricks as a leader by example, if a young pitcher wants to pay attention.

“You have to watch what he does to really appreciate what Kyle Hendricks is,” Bosio said. “The one thing that we’ve worked extremely hard with on Kyle is pitching off previous pitches.

That’s where Kyle can really be a mentor with a lot of our young guys.

“A lot of our young guys that we have – yeah, they’re not top draft picks, they’re not top prospects, because we’re a position-player organization. And our infrastructure says that. That’s who we are.”

Bosio said the Cubs look for young pitchers that can throw strikes, are aggressive and are smart.

“Kyle Hendricks is that kind of guy,” he said.

And if Kyle Hendricks can help the club build more of the same kind of guys?

“I think he’s got a lot to offer,” Epstein said.

Rebuild casualty: White Sox release Lawrie

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Brett Lawrie’s exit from the White Sox was a quiet one, an uncharacteristic departure for the energetic infielder known for bouncing around and playing resident deejay in the Sox clubhouse.

It also was somewhat surprising, considering the Sox tendered the 27-year-old veteran a contract and signed him to a $3.5 million deal in December. When he was put on waivers Friday, you had to wonder why he was brought back in the first place to a rebuilding team.

Lawrie, who encountered lower-body issues in camp yet again after he missed the last two-plus months of the 2016 season, got bit by the injury bug again this spring. And as the Sox completed their first week of Cactus

League games without him taking drills, they decided to cut ties now without the risk of losing too much money in the deal.

If Lawrie clears waivers, which seems likely, he can become a free agent. Because arbitration contracts such as his aren’t guaranteed until Opening Day, the Sox would be on the hook for about $570,000 of his salary.

Brett Lawrie General manager Rick Hahn said the move was “difficult” but made for the sake of the rebuild. It means more time at second base for Tyler Saladino, whose numbers are comparable, and for Yolmer Sanchez and possibly Leury Garcia. Yoan Moncada, their prized prospect, likely will start the season at Triple-A but get to Chicago at some point this year.

“We are committed to giving an opportunity several of our young players, players who are going to be here for an extended period of time,’’ Hahn said.

When Lawrie was tendered a contract, third baseman Todd Frazier was viewed as a likely trade chip, and Lawrie gave them protection at third. The market for third basemen has cooled, and Frazier has also been hurt, so he all but certain to be with the Sox for the first half of the season.

“We can’t really control the pace or timing of these transactions that are part of this process,’’ Hahn said.

“When we committed to bringing Brett back it was early in the offseason and we envisioned various transactions that would have opened up more play time for him, whether it was at second or at third.

“None of those deals came to fruition and as a result there really just

wasn’t the opportunity to accomplish what we wanted to accomplish with our young players and get him reasonable play time here in Chicago.’’

Lawrie, 27, batted .248 with 22 doubles, 12 home runs and 36 RBI in 94 games last season, his first with the Sox after being acquired from Oakland on Dec. 9, 2015.

After arriving at camp saying he was close to being ready, Lawrie participated in drills and then was sidelined with lower body muscle discomfort. He attributed his problems last season, which started with his left hamstring and extended to various other issues in his lower half, to the use of orthotics that messed with his balance.

Hahn said he wished Lawrie well and fully expects him to catch on elsewhere.

in the second period and Thomas Greiss stopped 30 shots for the Islanders, who played Thursday night in Dallas and are fighting for a playoff spot.

The Hawks don’t have to worry about a playoff spot, and they didn’t have much to worry about before meeting the Islanders.

Entering Friday’s game, Hawks coach Joel Quenneville liked what he had been seeing. The lineup was meshing as all four lines were clicking and, in general, the Hawks were getting closer to what they want to be.

They didn’t show all of those traits until late against New York.

“I thought we were pretty good defensively. Second period, Crow made some big saves for us and hung in there,” Quenneville said. “I thought our best period was the third, generated some zone time, possession time, some chances. Finally getting one through.”

For the first two periods it didn’t look as if the Hawks would get one through Greiss.

“I think collectively, the first 40 (minutes) maybe wasn’t our best,” Toews said. “I didn’t think we were playing with that speed and that energy that we have been as of late.”

The Hawks and Isles ended an unmemorable first period scoreless, and there were only a couple prime chances for either team. New York had one on a Hawks power play after a turnover at the Islanders’ blue line that fell to John Tavares, but Crawford kept the game scoreless when he made a save with 10:13 left.

Already dealing with multiple injuries and absences, the Hawks got a scare late in the first on an Is-

landers power play when a Nick Leddy shot hit Marcus Kruger in the left arm. Kruger was clearly in pain and favoring the arm but stayed in the game.

The second period wasn’t that much better for the Hawks, who fell behind 1-0 at the 13:27 mark when Nelson scored at the end of a Hawks power play.

In the third, the Hawks showed more life. Greiss’ right pad save on Ryan Hartman after a feed from Toews with 13:09 left kept the Islanders ahead, where they stayed until Panarin’s goal from the left circle.

“I think there was obviously more desperation being down a goal,” Hawks defenseman Duncan Keith said. “We weren’t thrilled with how we played the first couple periods but we were moving pucks and getting up on the play and just skating better. I think it comes down to a little more desperation and pressing to get that goal to tie it up.”

In overtime, Crawford made five saves, while Greiss made three to send the game to the shootout.

Versatile Hartman becoming Hawks’ utility man

mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Ryan Hartman is becoming Joel Quenneville’s utility man.

Hartman has bounced around the lineup all season, and appeared to find a permanent home on the third line with Tanner Kero and Marian Hossa. But with Nick Schmaltz likely out Friday night against the New York Islanders because of an illness, Hartman was the obvious choice to move up to that coveted top-line spot alongside Jonathan Toews and Richard Panik.

Hartman spent much of Wednesday’s win over Pittsburgh in that spot after Schmaltz replaced the injured Artem Anisimov on the second line.

“He’s been good all year for us,” Quenneville said. “He has that versatility, and played up there a bit already. He gives you a little sandpaper, as well. But I thought he fit in with those guys and did a nice job.”

Hartman entered the game with

15 goals, all at even strength. Only superstar rookies Auston Matthews and Patrik Laine, the top two picks in last June’s draft, have more among first-year players. Throw in Hartman’s penchant for game-saving, last-second, diving blocked shots – he had one Sunday against the Blues and one last month in Dallas.

“The other night, you see the big block that Hartzy came up Ryan Hartman with at the end of the game, and he’s just making plays like that that make a difference,” Toews said. “Doesn’t matter what it is, if it’s scoring a goal or a fight or a hit or backchecking, Hartzy seems to be doing it right now.”

Back on the draw: Marcus Kruger won six of 10 faceoffs Wednesday night against the Penguins.

That’s nothing special for a guy who’s won about half his faceoffs throughout his career, but it was noteworthy because it was the first game he took the majority of his line’s draws

since he returned from a hand injury Jan. 26. Dennis Rasmussen, a natural center, had been taking the bulk of faceoffs for Kruger – who dealt with a similar issue when he returned from wrist surgery last March – when they were on the same line together.

“I talked about it with the coaches, but it was more my decision, and when I felt comfortable,” Kruger said. “That’s been a big part of my game, and it’s a little bit easier being in your position right away (rather than starting on the wing). It’s only been a game and a half where I’ve taken a lot of draws, but that’s an area I want to help out with. I’m trying to get better and better.”

Nick up: Nick Leddy, traded to the Islanders before the start of the 201415 season, has turned into a top-pairing defenseman in New York. He entered Friday’s game with 10 goals (10th in the league among defensemen) and 24 assists, and is averaging nearly 23 minutes a game. Leddy was a third-pairing guy in Chicago and never fully earned Quenneville’s trust. But he has earned Quenne-

ville’s respect with his play in New York.

“He didn’t get a ton of ice time (with the Hawks), but you have to give him credit for how he progressed,” Quenneville said. “All of a sudden, he’s assuming [top] matchups, important minutes. You love the way he skates and moves the puck out of his own end. He’s [shown] some improvement to his game, where it looks like he’s gotten to the next level.”

Injury update: Anisimov participated in Friday’s morning skate and could play Saturday in Nashville, a much quicker turnaround than expected after he left Wednesday’s game with an apparent leg injury.

Schmaltz also could play in Nashville. Niklas Hjalmarsson (upper body) should start skating over the weekend and is targeting a return Thursday against Anaheim.

Scott Darling participated in the morning skate, but did not dress because of an upper-body injury. The Hawks recalled goaltender Jeff Glass from Rockford to serve as Corey Crawford’s backup.

CHICAGO – There was no Artem Anisimov. There was no Nick Schmaltz. There was no Niklas Hjalmarsson.

Even as hot as the Blackhawks have been recently, losing two of your top-six forwards and one of your best defensemen is tough to overcome.

But the Hawks figured out a way.

Artemi Panarin tied the game with 1:14 left in the third, Panarin and Jonathan Toews scored in the shootout and Corey Crawford made 31 saves to give the Hawks a 2-1 win Friday over the New York Islanders. The Hawks won their sixth straight and 11th of 12 to pull within one point of idle Minnesota for the Western Conference lead. Panarin’s goal saved the Hawks from their fifth shutout of the season, before he and Toews completed the rally in the shootout.

“There’s no doubt we have the guys to step up and make up for the loss of a few key players tonight,” Toews said.

Anti-depressants can ease the burden of the difficult feelings that have derailed the patient’s journey back to normal daily life. And in talk therapy, patients can safely explore their fears, pinpoint their anxieties, and gain an understanding of the many ways that surviving a heart attack has reshaped their lives.

If your husband isn’t interested in the one-on-one environment of a therapist’s office, then a support group is a good alternative. The chance to meet other heart patients and to hear their stories and to share his own can go a long way toward piercing the wall of isolation.

Another excellent avenue of support is something called cardiac rehabilitation.

It’s a highly structured program, usually 36 weeks long, that includes exercise, education and counseling, all done under careful medical supervision.

The cardiac rehab team typically consists not only of doctors and nurses, but also dietitians, exercise physiologists and other professionals. Participants attend classes and lectures, get important information about the medications they are taking and learn how to return to their daily lives.

Most of all, I suggest talking to your family doctor, who can help you with whichever path your husband is willing to pursue.

Dear Reader: Depression following a heart attack is not uncommon. Up to onethird of people who have had a heart attack report symptoms of depression. It’s not just the body that suffers the effects of a heart attack – there can be a mental and emotional toll as well.

A person who goes through a life-changing medical event – and a heart attack certainly qualifies – often faces an emotional struggle once the initial danger is past. He or she can wind up feeling alone, frightened and fundamentally different from everyone around them. Even when surrounded by a loving family and caring friends, these feelings of isolation can be profound.

The first challenge is to recognize that something is wrong.

In addition to becoming quiet and withdrawn, symptoms of depression include anxiety, persistent feelings of sadness, problems with concentration, and a lack of interest in the people and activities that were once important. There may be changes in appetite or in eating habits, as well as changes in sleep patterns, whether insomnia or sleeping too much.

One danger posed by depression is that heart patients may not fully engage in their recovery. They may not be careful to always take their medications, and may either put off or refuse to make the lifestyle changes recommended by their doctors.

Studies have shown that individuals who are depressed may be twice as likely to have another heart attack.

Jerry Gillies, an author in the area of finance, said, “Make sure you visualize what you really want, not what someone else wants for you.”

A bridge declarer wants to make his contract; the defenders wish to defeat him. This week, being successful as declarer has required visualizing both the nasty distribution and how to survive it. Here is one more example.

How should South have played in four spades? West led the diamond ace: three, nine (encouraging), two.

West continued with the diamond king and another diamond.

North’s sequence showed game-going values with exactly five spades. Here, three no-trump would have been easy, but South removed to the 5-3 fit. He was worried that a club lead might have been fatal to three no-trump.

Four spades looked like a walk in the park too, with ... apparently ... five spades, four hearts and one club readily available. Declarer ruffed the third diamond and played a spade to his ace. East’s club discard was a mortal blow that South had not visualized. The contract could no longer be made.

Just in case the spades were 5-0, or East had begun with a doubleton diamond and could overruff a low spade, declarer should have discarded a club or heart from the board at trick three. Yes, East would have taken the trick with his queen, but he would have had no winning continuation. Probably he would have shifted to a club, but South would have won with his ace, drawn trumps and claimed those 10 winners.

Try to visualize nasty distribution and how to circumnavigate it.
