The bump isn’t just Trump: What’s driving the stock rally

The Associated Press NEW YORK – The stock market is hitting new heights, and yes, excitement about President Donald Trump’s policies is part of the reason for it. But it’s not the only one, analysts said.

Even if Trump had lost the election, many professional investors and analysts said they still would have expected stocks to rise, just perhaps not to the same degree. The Standard & Poor’s index has leapt 11.3 percent since Election Day, packing more gains into four months than it’s had in four of the past six full years. It dipped a bit Thursday, but it’s still close to its record set a day earlier.

The Trump bump

The first reaction for markets to Trump’s win of the White House was confusion. Many investors had been expecting a victory for Hillary Clinton, and markets around the world tumbled on election night as the result became apparent.

But they reversed course within hours.

The reason: Investors are expecting the Trump White House to push through tax cuts for businesses and to loosen regulations on them.

Lower tax bills for companies should lead to an immediate rise in earnings. Easier regulations also should help businesses, the thinking goes, particularly big banks and other financials that have been under restrictions imposed after the financial crisis.

The economy is getting better

Growth has been frustratingly slow since the end of the Great Recession, but the job market is picking up steam. The unemployment rate in January was 4.8 percent, and economists see the economy as close to full employment. A report on Thursday showed that the fewest number of workers applied for unemployment benefits last week since Richard Nixon was in office.

Improvement was underway before Trump entered the White House, but his election has spurred things along.

Higher confidence all around

After years of hiding out in bonds and other safer investments, retail investors began creeping back into stock mutual funds and exchange-traded funds after the election. Investors plugged $20.7 billion into U.S. stock funds in November, the biggest month in nearly two years.

They’ve followed that up with more purchases.

That buying has helped to bid up stocks even more.

Corporate profits are getting better

Earnings per share for companies in the S&P 500 were nearly 6 percent higher last quarter than a year earlier, with nearly all of the companies reporting, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence.

It’s a sharp turnaround from a year ago, when low oil prices and other factors were pulling down profits for S&P 500 companies.

BRIGHTER FORECAST Economic outlook hopeful for DeKalb, Sycamore

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Chamber of Commerce officials are optimistic that members of the public will see positive economic change in the near future.

Sycamore Chamber of Commerce Executive Director RoseMarie Treml said that usually there has been a post-election surge in economic optimism, but this time around, there might be some staying power.

“The companies we’ve spoken to have said they plan to keep hiring, which I believe clearly reflects economic optimism on their part,” Treml said. “And our temp businesses have indicated there is a huge increase in demand from some of our larger industries.”

Treml added that hopefulness might also have to do with President Donald Trump’s plans to spur the economy through deregulation, tax reform and infrastructure improvements.

DeKalb Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Matt Duffy also said there is reason to be optimistic, but individuals and businesses are likely to proceed with caution.

“I think you’re starting to see more things that are brought to the (DeKalb City) Council and more stores and shops opening,” Duffy said. “We’re at a point where I think people were cautious and hesitant, but they’re starting to see things change, and when one domino falls, the others will fall.”

A conservative approach would eventually lead to stronger economic growth, he said.

“People will be more guarded and take less chances and heavy risks, but they will move forward with a strong base,” Duffy said. “They are going to be more conservative, but that still allows them to grow. When there’s a quick downturn in the economy, it will be stronger when it works its way back up.”

Treml said there has been an increase in hiring from the small business sector, which is important because they are responsible for a majority of new job creation.

“Also, I believe if consumers are optimistic, they will purchase more goods and services, which will involve growth and stimulation to our

Duffy said the job market in DeKalb is moving positively, but not moving as quickly with the living wage jobs.

“Hopefully, there will be more developments,” Duffy said. “As a general rule, seeing construction is positive for the economy, and I think we will see more of that in the coming nine to 18 months.”

Employers at a recent job fair at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center offered a mixed outlook on their hiring plans.

The Target Distribution Center in DeKalb, which services hundreds of stores, has had a high demand for workers, team leader Nidah Ahmed said. Target has doubled employment from 350 to 700 workers at the facility,

DeKalb County Economic Development Corp.’s Paul Borek has said.

The Illinois workNet Center, managed by Kishwaukee College, assisted Target in promoting mass hiring events to attract necessary workers.

For some area public-sector employers, demand for new hires has come from a series of retirements.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Tim Creighton said that because of a large number of people retiring, his department needs six to 10 people for correctional officer and deputy patrol positions this year, whereas in previous years, the sheriff’s office sought to hire three to five new officers.

Rockford Fire Department recruiter Jeff Koweit said that while retiring workers and budget issues play roles in hiring, the department is looking to fill the highest number of positions it has in 20 years.

In other businesses, job growth might remain stagnant, but the de-

mand for certain jobs may increase.

Veronica Downey, a college recruiter at Sears Holdings, said that the number of employment opportunities at her company has stayed the same over the past few years, but job requirements continue to adapt as companies grow more reliant on technology.

“We’re expecting students to change as business roles have in the past,” Downey said. “We’re a different company today, and we need more people looking at data and making decisions. Business and finance majors are the future.”

SMC, the world’s largest manufacturer of pneumatic components, is experiencing a similar problem when hiring sales associates.

Sales recruiter B.J. Heckner said as manufacturing industries rely more on robotic machinery for labor, workers will need to be educated on the functions of these robots to sell the right parts.

Clinton Rosette Middle School holds inaugural event celebrating reading

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Dyrell Smith, an eighth-grader at Clinton Rosette Middle School, said he has a tough time taking an interest in reading and can’t relate to books he reads.

In response, DeKalb Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Matt Duffy, one of the many volunteers encouraging recreational reading Thursday during the school’s inaugural Day of Reading, said he felt the same way when he was in school, and it is important to find books that you can connect with.

More than 30 volunteers, many of whom came from Northern Illinois University, visited the school at 650 N. First St. to talk about how reading has touched their lives and how it plays an important role in a student’s future.

Volunteers’ favorite books and genres also were shared.

After the presentations, there was an hour of uninterrupted reading time, which was meant to motivate students to find time to read during their busy schedules.

“Middle school is a tough time, and one thing that really ebbs and flows is reading, so we want to keep literacy on the forefront,” Clinton Rosette Principal Tim Vincent said.

“The vision of having that many volunteers was initially a difficult task, but there has been outstanding community effort.”

Parents were encouraged to take their children to the DeKalb Public Library to select a book they want to read.

Reading materials of all kind were welcome, such as books on poetry, fiction, historical novels, instructional books or comic books.

Language arts teachers Jacquelynn Zatloukal, Chrissy Somers and Rachel Honeyman helped organize the event and recruiting the volunteers.

Vincent said that in the future, the school might look to doing similar events recognizing the importance of math and computer science skills.

“I’ve seen other schools do a day of coding, so highlighting computer science could be the next step,” he said.

Church, 228 Morris Street, beginning at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. respectively. Burial was held on Thursday, March 2 at 11:00 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery, Creston, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Holmen Lutheran Church, or the Wayne & Ruth Henderson Scholarship fund established in their honor for students at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa.

D-427 looks to increase maintenance budget

SYCAMORE – A proposed increase to Sycamore School District 427’s operations and maintenance budget could fund safety improvements around the district, such as fixing the ventilation system in Sycamore High School’s welding shop.

Chief Financial Officer Nicole Stuckert presented the proposed 2 percent increase to board members Tuesday.

The increase would bring the operations and maintenance budget for the district up about $169,000 to $2.2 million for the next school year, fiscal 2018. This is after the budget decreased by $120,000 from fiscal 2016 to the current year.

“We were able to save some money in this current year, but looking at those projects that we feel need to be done for next year, there would be a little bit of an increase for fiscal 2018,” Stuckert said.

Stuckert said some projects have been put on hold the past few years because of budget constraints, but certain ones related to the safety of students and workers are being moved up on the priority list.

The most expensive project – fixing

the welding shop ventilation system at the high school – is expected to cost about $100,000. Stuckert said the main problem is that the fan motor has been failing, so it will need to be upgraded so students in agricultural mechanics and other classes can continue using the shop.

“We’ve been fortunate enough to bring that program back to the school district,” she said. “And so with that, since it sat dormant for some years, we’re looking at some improvements that need to be done there as well.”

The district spent $20,000 this year on fixing the crumbling steps beneath the railings at West Elementary School and is looking to spend another $20,000 to continue the project next year, Stuckert said.

“There probably will be some more work that will have to be done in future years, but this should get us close to being done moving forward,” she said.

Safety concerns in the district’s bus maintenance garage prompted two other proposed projects – fixing the exterior building wall that has been flaking because of water damage and fixing the

Caterpillar offices raided in probe

Investigation might be related to Swiss unit

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Federal law enforcement officials raided three central Illinois facilities of manufacturer Caterpillar on Thursday as part of an investigation the company said might be related to business with its Swiss subsidiary, CSARL. Officials from three federal agencies, some wearing jackets that said “police, federal agent,” searched the Peoria headquarters of Caterpillar, one of the world’s largest makers of construction and other heavy equipment. Facilities in East Peoria and Morton also were raided under a federal warrant, U.S. Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Sharon Paul said.

“We believe the execution of this search warrant is regarding, among other things, export filings that relate to the CSARL matter,” Caterpillar said in a statement later Thursday, referring to its Swiss subsidiary.

Caterpillar spokeswoman Corrie Heck Scott said in an email that the company was cooperating with law enforcement.

Rauner touring damage for 2nd day after tornadoes

CROSSVILLE – Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner plans to survey storm damage in White County, which was among the areas hit hard by Midwest storms that spawned tornadoes.

Rauner’s visit to southern Illinois on Thursday came after a tour Wednesday of storm damage in central Illinois including Ottawa, where an uprooted tree killed a 76-year-old man and his son-in-law.

In White County, an apparent tornado of undetermined strength near the town of Crossville killed a 71-year-old man and injured his wife. The White County Coroner’s Office said Thomas McCord had sought shelter in an outbuilding near his home before being killed by the storm.

Illinois man dies, raising storm death toll to 4

OTTAWA – A northern Illinois man has died after being struck by a tree during a powerful Midwestern storm, raising the death toll for the regional storms to four.

Peoria County’s coroner said 31-year-old David A. Johnson of Ottawa died Wednesday of severe head trauma at a Peoria hospital.

Johnson was in a backyard with his spouse and father-in-law Tuesday when the storm uprooted a tree that landed on them. His 76-year-old father-in-law, Wayne Tuntland, was killed. His spouse was treated at a hospital.

Seventy-one-year-old Thomas McCord also died Tuesday when an apparent tornado struck a building in Crossville, in southern Illinois.

In Missouri, officials said 24-year-old Travis Koenig of Perryville was killed when a tornado blew his vehicle off Interstate 55. Forecasters said the tornado, which damaged more than 100 homes, had wind speeds between 139 mph and 165 mph.

Senate spells out proposed services for sales tax

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois would charge sales tax on storage lockers, private detectives, lawn care and body piercing under legislation introduced in the Senate on Thursday.

It was the only development in the Capitol a day after Democrats called an acrimonious halt to consideration of a plan engineered to break through a two-year budget deadlock with Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Sponsoring Sen. Toi Hutchinson added a list of “taxable services” to already contentious tax legislation. Democrats propose increasing the income tax to battle a multibillion-dollar deficit wrought of a government limping along on court-ordered spending that has outstripped revenue for nearly two years.

A 2014 report by U.S. Senate Democratic staff said that Caterpillar had avoided paying $2.4 billion in U.S. taxes since 2000 by shifting profits to the affiliate in Switzerland.

The report said Caterpillar paid PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP $55 million to develop the tax strategy. Under the strategy, Caterpillar transferred the rights to profits from its parts business to a wholly controlled Swiss affiliate called CSARL, although no employees or business activities were moved to Switzerland, the report said.

In exchange, CSARL paid a small royalty, and the income was taxed at a special rate of 4 percent to 6 percent that Caterpillar negotiated with the Swiss government, the report said.

Before the arrangement, 85 percent of the profits from the parts business were taxed in the U.S., the report said. Afterward, only 15 percent of the profits were taxed in the U.S. The rest was taxed at the special rate in Switzerland, the report said.

Illinois officer kills pet dog that attacked police dog

SPRINGFIELD – A Springfield woman whose dog was fatally shot by an officer when it tussled with a police dog said she’s angry police haven’t apologized for the shooting.

Chrystal Musgrove also said the five gunshot wounds her boxer-pit bull mix, Harley, suffered were excessive.

She told The State Journal-Register that Harley’s death was especially hard on her 9-year-old son. She said Harley was just doing his job as a guard dog.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Under intensifying pressure, Attorney General Jeff Sessions abruptly agreed Thursday to recuse himself from any investigation into Russian meddling in America’s 2016 presidential election. He acted after revelations he twice spoke with the Russian ambassador during the campaign and failed to say so when pressed by Congress.

Sessions rejected any suggestion that he had tried to mislead anyone about his contacts with the Russian, saying, “That is not my intent. That is not correct.”

But he did allow that he should have been more careful in his testimony during his confirmation hearing, saying, “I should have slowed down and said, ‘But I did meet one Russian official a couple of times.’ ” The White House has stood

Separately, a White House official said Thursday that Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and ousted national security adviser Michael Flynn met with Kislyak at Trump Tower in New York in December. The official described that sit-down as a brief courtesy meeting.

Flynn was fired last month for misleading Vice President Mike Pence about his contacts with Kislyak.

The Trump team’s account of Flynn’s contacts with the ambassador has changed several times. The White House did not disclose the in-person meeting, or Kushner’s involvement, until Thursday.

Both the White House official and the person with knowledge of Page’s discussion insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly disclose the meetings.

Trump has been trailed for months by questions about potential ties to Russia, and allegations of Russian efforts to interfere in the U.S. election to help him defeat Hillary Clinton. The new president and his campaign officials have

blamed such contentions on Democratic sore losers and have heatedly denied any contact with Russians concerning the election.

While there is nothing necessarily nefarious or even unusual about a member of Congress meeting with a foreign ambassador, typically members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee meet with foreign ambassadors, not Armed Services Committee lawmakers, such as Sessions, whose responsibility is oversight of the military and the Pentagon.

The latest development comes on the heels of what had been the high point of Trump’s young presidency: a well-received address to Congress Tuesday night that energized Republicans and appeared to wipe away some lawmakers’ concerns about the administration’s tumultuous start.

But Sessions faced a rising chorus of demands that he resolve the seeming contradiction between his two conversations in the summer and fall with Kislyak and his sworn statements to Congress in January, when he said he had not had communications with Russians during the campaign.

How to protest the immigration policy

Last week, the Department of Homeland Security presented an outline for a major change in immigration enforcement and detention that has the potential to harm everyone, including U.S. citizens.

The new policies put most of the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in this country at risk of arrest and deportation, no matter how law-abiding or hard-working, no matter if they are parents of young children who are citizens or elderly infirm people who have been in this country – and paid taxes here – for decades.

The plan will triple the number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to 15,000. It will also increase the number of detention centers. (The private prison industry is salivating over the new business).

The main weapon in the feds’ arsenal is heightened fear and suspicion and the potential for abuse of the Fourth and Fifth Amendments, which require “probable cause” for arrests and due process of law.

It’s already started. Detailed warnings on Facebook and Twitter of immigration checkpoints in various cities spread like wildfire after immigration raids across the country resulted in 680 arrests a couple of weeks ago. The rumors were false, but the panic was real, aggravated by reports of arbitrary and inhumane arrests. Officials have warned against scam artists posing as ICE agents seeking to extort money from people who are afraid for themselves or family members.

Children already are being kept out of school.

Colleges are bracing for immigration raids, and trying to reassure students that the institutions won’t cooperate. Some immigrants are seeking sanctuary in churches. This is not what most of us want. In a recent CBS poll, 73 percent of respondents said they did not want undocumented people to be deported, with 60 percent supporting a path to citizenship. At this point, however, what the American people want doesn’t matter. The president has wide powers over immigration and he continues to slander immigrants as “bad, bad people.”

But Philadelphia remains a “Fourth Amendment City,” a more apt description of policy than “Sanctuary City.” In the absence of warrants, local law enforcement won’t cooperate with federal immigration officials to detain undocumented immigrants who are in custody for nonviolent crimes.

In a conflict between ICE and the Constitution, we choose the Constitution.

Some Philadelphians are organizing to take action.

Last Friday, 200 people, mostly lawyers, jammed into the Loews Hotel to learn how they can provide pro bono legal aid to immigrants and refugees, a gathering sponsored by the city and the Philadelphia Bar Association.

In addition, about 1,300 people have signed up with nonprofit New Sanctuary Movement to be trained in how to respond nonviolently to ICE arrests, including peacefully disrupting them.

Trump reprises bleak America vision

President Donald Trump opened his first speech to a joint session of Congress in a conciliatory tone, declaring that he had come to “deliver a message of unity and strength” and proclaiming “a new surge of optimism” and “the renewal of the American spirit.”

But the sunny tone and a laudable condemnation of recent attacks on minorities soon gave way to the same dark and false vision of the country featured in the president’s grim inaugural address – one in which borders are open, drugs are pouring in, illegal immigrants prey on law-abiding Americans and globalization has impoverished vast swaths of the nation. When it came to specific policy proposals, Trump similarly offered a few encouraging signs – but many more reasons for skepticism.

In describing his bleak vision of a ruined United States exploited by foreigners, Trump wrote a series of checks he almost certainly cannot cash. He promised that “dying industries will come roaring back to life,” that “crumbling infrastructure will be replaced” and “our terrible drug epidemic will slow down and ultimately

stop.”

Encouragingly, Trump told news anchors before his address that he is open to an immigration reform that includes a pathway to legal status for undocumented people. Yet the president only obliquely referenced this head-turning position in his speech. Similarly, he called for new policy on childcare accessibility and family leave, as well as expanding drug “treatment for those who have become so badly addicted.” Yet repealing the Affordable Care Act, as he proposed, would likely make life much harder for those who need new family benefits and addiction treatment.

The president called to “restart the engine of the American economy,” in part by making it “much, much harder for companies to leave,” which implies ruinous protectionism or other government misdirection of investment.

Trump decried foreign duties on American goods after bragging that he tore up the Trans-Pacific Partnership, an agreement that would have lowered those very duties.

Trump called for a $1 trillion “program of national rebuilding,” “one of the largest increases in

national defense spending in American history” and “massive tax relief for the middle class,” all issues on which he could work with Democrats. But he will have to find ways to finance these priorities that do not involve hollowing out the State Department, the Environmental Protection Agency and other essential government services.

In foreign policy, Trump mixed praise of the NATO alliance with bursts of isolationist and xenophobic rhetoric, claiming the U.S. had “defended the borders of other nations” but not its own. He made no mention of relations with Russia or China and offered no substantive indication of what his strategy would be for the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The ugliest moment in the 60-minute address came when Trump announced the formation of an office on “Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement,” and then introduced families of people allegedly murdered by illegal immigrants.

It was an appeal to raw prejudice and fear that will do nothing to promote the national unity he claims to be seeking.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Group photos of the smiling women started popping up on social media, which is to right-wingers what dangling a raw ribeye is to a cougar. Lots of hyperventilating over their refusal to blend in with the scenery. How dare those women draw attention to themselves! Who do they think they are, men?

My favorite thread of outrage came from those who accused the women of stooping to “identity politics.”

Tell you what. I’m going to stop identifying as a woman as soon as Republicans stop identifying women for targeted attacks.

Speaking of Planned Parenthood.

Last month, I went to a Planned Parenthood clinic in Cleveland for a Pap test. I realize some of you would rather not think about this grandmother’s adventures in gynecology. I hear you.

That’s how I feel every time legislators try to interfere with the gynecological endeavors of our grown daughters. Until Republicans stop going after them and countless other women, this is how we’re gonna roll.

Not only do women still need quality health care after we can no longer conceive, but also this freedom from reproduction seems to unleash countless opinions we used to keep to ourselves.

I can speak only for myself, of course – and most every postmenopausal woman I know. I went to Planned Parenthood on the recommendation of my family doctor, who doesn’t do gynecological exams.

“You know how professional they are,” she said, “and you can afford it.”

“Walk that talk,” she wanted to say – I could tell by the look on her face – but she’s always been too nice that way.

So off I went to Planned Parenthood, which accepted my insurance and treated me as if I were not invisible. They’re dangerous that way, those people,

insisting on seeing us for who we are and filling us with ideas of how we still matter. I can see why right-wingers get alarmed.

That visit was a lot more fun than my recent encounter with a local hospital and my health insurer. Just yesterday, I spent more than a half hour on hold while an employee on each side debated who was at fault for failing to properly process payment for my mammogram in August. I sat there listening to the march of classical music on speakerphone and thought about what our president had said, out loud, to a roomful of governors just the day before.

“Nobody knew that health care could be so complicated,” he said, thus revealing what it’s like to be a man who has never had to spend a day of his life worrying about how to pay a medical bill.

I feel better. How about you?

Kinzinger needs to meet with his constituents

To the Editor: The week of Feb. 20, members of Congress were on recess with the purpose of meeting with the constituents of the congressional district they were elected to represent. While Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, was in the area, he held no public meeting with any of the constituents of the 16th District.

It is known he did make an appearance at two Republican Party fundraisers. One was held Feb. 18 in Galena and another was held Feb. 23. He was also invited to multiple town halls that were organized by various civic groups. He did not make an appearance at any of the town halls. He also took the time to make an appearance for interviews with BBC and other media.

Kinzinger has publicly announced that he avoids the town hall meetings because he does not believe it is constructive to subject himself to what he has characterized as “people coming off of social media to disrupt the meeting.” He has also stated

that he is “in his district all of the time meeting with his constituents.” Other than those two Republican Party fundraisers, we cannot find any evidence of meetings with constituents. And considering that the Republican Party is not a governmental agency, instead it is a private organization, it’s hard to characterize a fundraiser as “meeting with constituents.”

Members of Congress are elected to represent the residents of a district.

Historically, this has meant meeting with individual civic leaders and holding town hall meetings. The purpose is to generate a common consensus on legislation that Congress votes on. Without meeting directly with constituents, it would be difficult to gauge what the consensus of a district is. In contrast, meeting with special interest groups provides only a perspective of what is important to those groups.

Kinzinger has not held a town hall meeting since the primaries in 2012, almost five years. In that time, there has been a great deal of legislation proposed and voted on.

Failing to meet with his constituents, how

has Kinzinger been able to gain a consensus on what is important to the people of the district?

Representative democracy is meant to be responsive to the majority of the governed. This is best achieved by holding informative and responsive meetings with constituents. If Kinzinger continues to choose not to hold town hall meetings, then it is our obligation to find someone who will represent us properly.

While working at Northern Illinois University, my awareness of and friendship with Jerry Smith developed as I saw him making a successful life for himself and his family by doing the right things for the area he called home. Jerry has a background of

leadership roles that have not only brought good things to him personally, but also made the community a better place for all of us to live.

Jerry works extremely well with people and takes the time to listen to their concerns. I watched him in the things he did as a student at Northern Illinois University, and I have seen his leadership qualities in the local business community as well as the DeKalb County Community Foundation, which touches us in a very positive way.

Jerry has a strong personal connection with Northern Illinois University, the business community, and positive concern for those who call DeKalb home. His connection with an extremely broad segment of residents says to me that Jerry Smith would work for everyone to move forward and make DeKalb the community we all can proudly call home. Dozens of women in Congress wore suffragist white Tuesday for President Donald Trump’s first address to a joint session.

You know this had to annoy him, all those dames sticking out in that sea of dark suits, but he stayed on script anyway. That was all he had to do, apparently, to be newly anointed as “presidential” by pundits who just a week ago were filling the airwaves with the sounds of barely suppressed panic.

I understand this new take is mostly a collective sigh of relief – say “presidential” out loud as you exhale and you’ll see what I mean – but I thought we set that bar a little higher.

If managing to avoid rambling about everything from a nonexistent electoral landslide to an imaginary enemy force of journalists is the new definition of “presidential,” it’s only a matter of time before we’re seeing headlines about how the leader of the Free World can turn water into whine. I mean wine.

But maybe I’m just picky.

The House’s Democratic Women’s Working Group came up with the idea to show up wearing white as a reminder of “the ongoing fight to attain equal rights for all women.”

NEIGHBORS Students explore options during annual career tour DAILY CHRONICLE More than 70 students from area high schools enjoyed the weather Feb. 22 while exploring careers during the Assemble ur Career tour coordinated by the DeKalb/Ogle Workforce Development Consortium.

The fourth annual tour was hosted by area businesses Bright Farms, Rochelle; Cresswood Shredding, Cortland; CST Storage, DeKalb; Custom Aluminum Products, Genoa; Dawn Equipment, Sycamore; Rochelle Community Hospital; and S-K Tools, Sycamore.

After the tours, the students participated in a guided tour of the Northern Illinois University College of Engineering and Engineering Technology at Still Hall and Still Gym. With information in hand, the students ate a pizza lunch provided by the DeKalb County Economic Development Corp. at the DeKalb Public Library. While there, they heard more information about NIU, university acceptance criteria and the employment opportunities awaiting them once they are ready to start their careers.

tours of their facilities, so the students could get a flavor of the culture and environment at each facility.

Women, men and children in more than 170 countries and regions will celebrate World Day of Prayer on Friday.

World Day of Prayer is a worldwide ecumenical movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year on the first Friday in March. This year, the women of the WDP Committee of the Philippines call people to worship considering the words: “Am I being unfair to you?” With these words as backdrop, people are invited to learn about the Philippines’ history and

rich cultural diversity.

The women of the Philippines will share their stories of intergenerational wisdom, traditions and experiences of God’s profound love and acceptance. The focus is on Matthew 20:1-16, the parable of the laborers in the vineyard. The Bible study and worship service invite attendees to explore concepts of economic justice both in the Filipino context and around the world, and our response in light of God’s generosity.

This year’s service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at The Salvation Army DeKalb church, 830 Grove St. Churches assisting in the service will include Bethlehem Lutheran Church, First Baptist Church of DeKalb, First United Methodist Church of DeKalb and Westminister Presbyterian Church in DeKalb.

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – When the bus hits the road, the Northern Illinois wrestling team knows to stay away from senior Trace Engelkes.

Instead of socializing with teammates, Engelkes said he keeps to himself – headphones on – as he devolves into his own world of solitude.

More than likely, he’ll do the same as the Huskies head to the Mid-Amer-

ican Conference Championships, which begin Saturday at the University of Northern Iowa, with a trip to his first NCAA Championships on the line.

“I’m by myself. I’d like to hang out with the team, but I can’t,” Engelkes said early in the week. “Anytime before a big match, I can’t go hang out with the guys. I sit in my room and I literally listen to seven or eight hours of podcasts. I definitely put out that vibe that I don’t want to be talked to.

It’s weird because if you asked who the most talkative on the team would be, I’d be in contention for that. People understand when I’m not talking, I don’t want to be talked to.

“As soon as the match is over, whether I’ve won or I’ve lost, it’s almost like a weight has been lifted. Now I’m Trace again.”

Engelkes comes into the MAC Championships with a record of 17-3 overall and 5-2 against conference opponents. With three automatic NCAA

bids on the line at 174 pounds – the conference has 37 allocated across all weight classes – Engelkes comes in seeded third. He knows the dangers of finishing without the automatic bid, too. Last season, he finished fifth at the MAC Championships and finished just outside of getting an NCAA at-large bid with a record of 21-12.

“Wanting to secure that automatic bid, that’s the goal,” Engelkes said.

“All the experiences you’ve had are what’s going to benefit you now,” Scott said. “This is my fourth time going, so I know what to expect. I know the atmosphere to expect.”

There are five automatic bids available at both 149 and 197. Last season, the Huskies finished in sixth place at the MAC Championships with 65 team points – the most by NIU since scoring 73 points in 2004 – along with the four wrestlers they sent to the NCAA Championships.

“Success begets success, right?”

NIU coach Ryan Ludwig said. “That’s how you build a championship program.”

Engelkes could be a major building

block for the Huskies to transform into a championship program, but he talks with frustration and understanding on the importance of him to be left alone in the day leading up to an event like the MAC tournament. He listens to podcasts like TED Talks instead of music to keep his mind occupied and from getting overly amped up.

He jokes that when his girlfriend texts him on the bus ride, she understands she’ll receive a one-word answer in return. He’ll try to not sleep on the bus and during the day to improve the chances of falling at sleep at night.

However, he said the night before the MAC Championships last season, he got maybe two hours of sleep.

The reclusive routine has worked out well for Engelkes, a former state

champion wrestler from Winnebago whose .850 winning percentage this season is the highest on the team.

“I’ve always found strength in solitude,” he said. “One of my favorite sayings is, ‘Sweat and bleed in private, so you don’t have to do it in public.’ That was kind of my philosophy in high school. I didn’t have a lot of practice partners on my team. A lot of the work I did was on my own – put a weight room in the basement. I was sweating it out there. I was sweating it out in the backyard. I’d be sweating through five hours a day. There’d be two or three hours where I’d be the only one there.

I think that’s where I started the whole solitude thing and it’s carried through with me.”

ecarifio@shawmedia.com Both the Sycamore and Kaneland boys basketball teams have had their struggles this year, but one of them is going to be a regional champion.

The Knights and Spartans will meet for the third time this year today in the championship game of the Class 3A Sycamore Regional.

The winner will face Rochelle or Belvidere in a Class 3A Genoa-Kingston Sectional semifinal Tuesday.

The No. 8 seeded Knights (1020),who entered the regional with eight wins, beat No. 11 Illinois Math and Science Academy on Monday, then earned a 48-40 win against No. 2 Aurora Central Catholic on Tuesday.

Plagued by injuries this year, the Knights had an early nine-game losing streak, and had a stretch where they lost 15 of 17 games.

“All season long we’ve been trying to find our own identity and recently our defense has gotten better, and we’ve been moving the ball better and playing together,” Kaneland coach Joe Conroy said. “Just to have the opportunity to play for a regional championship has started to erase some of those struggles.

To win one would erase those losing streaks and struggles that we had throughout the season, to be honest, from start to finish.”

Fifth-seeded Sycamore (12-15) knocked off No. 3 Genoa-Kingston on Wednesday, 64-56 – the third win against the Cogs this year.

Now the Spartans will face the Knights for a third time, with the teams splitting the previous two meetings.

“That’s the nice thing with only one night to prepare is we know them pretty well,” Sycamore coach Ryan Picolotti said. “Having played (Wednesday), it’ll be more of a mental practice, but at this point of the year it’s more about what we do. We have to go our and prepare well.”

In the first meeting between the teams, a 67-53 win for the Spartans at home, Keyshawn Stallworth had a huge game for Sycamore, scoring 37 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.

“They did a great job that second game,” Picolotti said. “They were a lot more active, they did a good job of switching defenses and we couldn’t get into a rhythm against them. (Thursday) we’ll prepare for those switching defenses. We just have to execute and take great shots.”

As did Kaneland, Sycamore had a long losing streak – a stretch of six straight and nine of 11 in the middle of the season, plus losing four straight at the end of the year before closing out the regular season with a 46-45 win against Morris.

“Every coach goes into regionals, I’m sure, talking about the same thing,” Picolotti said. “High seeds or low seeds, it doesn’t matter. Records go away and the team that plays well for that game is the one that advances. We talked to our kids about this, and I’m sure coach Conroy talked to his, but for one game we have to be better and we get to move on.”

Abreu takes stand in trial

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Jose Abreu testified Thursday in Miami that he had an extremely close relationship with a Florida baseball trainer on trial along with a sports agent for allegedly smuggling Cuban ballplayers off the island.

Abreu acknowledged giving trainer Julio Estrada $25,000 a month last summer after Estrada’s assets were frozen by the government after his indictment in the smuggling case – $10,000 more than Estrada had requested. He did so, Abreu testified, “because of the high esteem I have for him.”

Abreu, who is not accused of wrongdoing, also paid Estrada’s wife an undisclosed amount to help decorate his South Florida home. He bought a separate $500,000 house in the Florida Keys for Estrada to live in rent-free, and Estrada was best man at Abreu’s wedding.

“These were people who had helped me a lot in getting into this country, so I had a lot of trust in them,” Abreu told a jury.

Estrada and sports agent Bartolo Hernandez are charged with conspiracy and alien smuggling for allegedly overseeing a network that brought

Abreu and other ballplayers out of Cuba by boat to a third country, where they could establish residency and seek lucrative free-agent contracts in the U.S. In return, Estrada’s Total Baseball company was to be paid 20 percent of Abreu’s $68 million White Sox contract, with Hernandez and two partners getting 5 percent.

Abreu testified that he has kept his end of the bargain, paying Estrada’s firm more than $7 million since he signed the Sox deal in 2013. He still owes about $5 million but is not sure whether he will pay Estrada any more, especially considering the trainer is facing significant prison time if convicted.

“Things have changed,” Abreu testified. “They are different now.”

Abreu said he now believes the terms he agreed to with Estrada were unfair.

“Do you feel like you were taken advantage of by Julio’s company?” asked Estrada attorney Sabrina Puglisi.

“Yes,” Abreu replied.

The prosecution part of the case is nearing an end. Abreu finished his second day of testimony, and Sox manager Rick Renteria said he expects Abreu to play in the team’s spring training game against the Padres tonight.

MESA, Ariz. – The wait took two weeks, but the decision was quick and no surprise.

Jon Lester is the Cubs’ Opening Day starter as they begin their championship defense April 2 in St. Louis – Lester’s second opening start in three seasons with the Cubs.

“He’s definitely earned it and deserves it,” manager Joe Maddon said when making the announcement Thursday before the Cubs’ spring game against the Cincinnati Reds.

“Then I talked to Jake [Arrieta] about being the No. 2 guy. And Jake obviously understood why we went with Jon first.”

Lester, last year’s runner-up in National League Cy Young voting, went 19-5 with a 2.44 ERA – the second-best ERA in baseball behind teammate Kyle Hendricks (2.13).

Lester also was the co-MVP of the

National League Championship Series during a postseason run in which he went 3-1 with a 2.02 ERA in five starts and a Game 7 relief appearance in the World Series.

“He does add to our ballclub that calming presence of, ‘Hey I want to be out here on the mound to be in every big spot for you guys, regardless of the situation, whoever we’ve got to face,’ ” teammate Jason Heyward said.

“Everybody feeds off of that.”

Arrieta, last year’s Opening Day starter after a 2015 Cy Young season, was 18-8 with a 3.10 ERA last year.

Hendricks, by the way, was third in Cy Young voting last year after a 16-8 season.

“Not many groups have that luxury,” Maddon said of the three legitimate choices. “But it obviously has to go to Jon Lester based on the body of work. We feel really good about that, and you feel great about Jake behind him, and whoever we want to set up 3-4-5. It’s good stuff.”

Picking any of these QBs in top 3 big risk

INDIANAPOLIS – You don’t have to be a rocket scientist, Ph.D. or NFL expert to know that quarterback is the most important position in the NFL. Yes, you need a lot more than just a QB to win big and win often, but it’s the one position you can’t do either without.

Quarterbacks are the highest paid players in the game, the most coveted and the hardest to find, and that’s why the primary focus every year at the NFL’s annual scouting combine starts there.

This year there are three players – DeShone Kizer, Deshaun Watson and Mitch Trubisky – whom almost everyone is focused on and a handful of others, including Nathan Peterman and Patrick Mahomes, demanding significant attention.

There are two factors making the quarterback question even more all-consuming than usual. The first is that although any of the five young men I mentioned might prove to be future All Pros, none are as projectable as players such as Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota and even Carson Wentz have been in recent seasons.

Issue No. 2, however, is that each of the first three teams drafting – Cleveland, San Francisco and the Bears – share a single overwhelming need that dwarfs all their other concerns: quarterback.

Which leads us to the biggest question: Will the Browns, 49ers or Bears significantly overreach and use a top-three pick on Kizer, Watson or Trubisky?

Browns coach Hue Jackson laid out the muster one will have to pass for his club to take a gamble on him.

“It’s a lot of things you’re looking for, but I think, most importantly, obviously, guys have arm talent, and can a guy process football at the rate that you need him to be able to do it?”

Not only did the 94-87 win hand the Golden State Warriors their second consecutive loss for the first time since April 2015, but it moved the Bulls (31-30) into the No. 6 spot of the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Call it a gutsy Bulls win. Or call it a bad night for Golden State’s All-Star backcourt of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, as the Splash Brothers performed more like the Crash Brothers.

Either way the Bulls weren’t going to complain about the results, as they watched Curry and Thompson combine to go 3 for 22 from beyond the 3-point line, as the usually high-octane Warriors offense went 6 for 30 (20 percent) from long range as a team.

“We tried to find a way to make them take as difficult a shot as possible, and I thought we did a solid job with that,” coach Fred Hoiberg said, when asked whether it was what his team did or what Curry and Thompson didn’t do.

“We started Jimmy [Butler] on Klay, and obviously Jimmy is one of the top defensive guards in the league. I thought Jerian Grant in the second half did a solid job on Steph when Jimmy was on Klay.

“It certainly wasn’t our 15-point explosive offensive fourth quarter. We had to find a way to try and get stops to get this win, and I thought our guys were really locked in on that end.”

Former Bulls guard turned Golden State coach Steve Kerr expressed concern about the energy of his team coming into the game, and that became reality in the first half. So while the Bulls were slow out of the gate, Golden State (50-11) did little to take advantage of the situation.

By the third quarter, the Bulls outscored the defending Western Conference champs, 32-22, and Thompson and Curry were a combined 3 for 13 from outside the 3-point line.

24 Does olive oil have healing properties?

Dear Doctor: Can olive oil be used topically to aid healing?

Dear Reader: Olive oil has been used since ancient times as a cosmetic and to aid skin healing. The ancient Egyptians used it as an anti-wrinkle potion; the Romans used it as a moisturizer after bathing. To this day, olive oil is used widely in many countries to treat and prevent multiple skin conditions.

Now let’s look at the evidence.

The purported benefit of olive oil may come from its fatty acid composition, predominantly oleic acid, but also palmitic acid and linoleic acid. These fatty acids have been thought to have both anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties.

Oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat, has been shown to penetrate the upper layers of skin, where it permeates between the cells – seeming to suggest that it’s an effective moisturizer. Anecdotal evidence might seem to bear that out, but note that oleic acid has been found to actually increase water loss across the epidermis, countering the notion that it can help lock in the skin’s moisture.

In a 2013 study published in the journal Pediatric Dermatology, researchers studied volunteers who applied six drops of olive oil to their forearm twice daily for five weeks.

They found that the skin treated with olive oil not only lost water, it also experienced a reduction in skin thickness and integrity, and in some people caused a local reaction.

The authors surmised that olive oil’s disruption of the skin may allow for penetration of allergens and increased inflammation of the skin’s layers.

Some people use olive oil in an attempt to mitigate stretch marks induced by pregnancy. The evidence for that is sketchy as well.

In a 2012 study published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine, 50 women who were 18 to 20 weeks pregnant applied olive oil twice daily to their abdominal skin, mas-

saging it in gently each time, keeping this practice up until they had delivered their baby. A control group of 50 women applied nothing to their abdominal skin. Although researchers did find some decrease in severe stretch marks among those who used olive oil topically, they found no overall significant difference in stretch marks between women who used olive oil and those who didn’t.

One place where olive oil may hold potential is in its treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. A 2015 study published in the Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders showed a significant improvement of healing and shrinking of ulcers with use of olive oil among people with grade 1 or grade 2 diabetic ulcers (the least serious of the grades, which progress to grade 5).

Complete ulcer healing occurred after 4 weeks in 73.3 percent of those who had olive oil placed over the ulcer versus 13.3 percent who didn’t. This healing may be related to olive oil’s potential to dry the lesion, which is linked to its propensity to remove water from the skin.

As for other skin conditions, some case reports have suggested that olive oil may reduce acne and symptoms of impetigo, but no controlled studies have been done.

So the evidence for olive oil on its own as a topical agent is not convincing. Further, it may even cause skin irritation, so I wouldn’t recommend it as a moisturizer, especially for infants. But because of olive oil’s ability to penetrate the skin, it could potentially be helpful in combination with another agent.

As for its potential in healing skin ulcerations in the lower legs and feet, further study is needed.

North’s four-heart response was a Texas transfer, which showed at least a six-card spade suit and said North was planning either to stop in game or to drive on to a slam. If he had transferred at the two-level, then jumped to four spades, that would have been a slam-invitation.

South had nine winners: five spades, two hearts and two clubs.

If East held the diamond ace, there would be no problems. But if West had that key card, declarer could lose one spade and three diamonds. Was there a chance even when West had the diamond ace?

Declarer took his second top spade trick, cashed the club king, played a club to his ace, ruffed a club on the board and returned to his hand with a heart. Then, when South led his last club and West followed suit, declarer discarded a diamond from the dummy. West was endplayed, forced to lead away from the diamond ace or concede a ruff-andsluff. Also, it would not have helped East to ruff the fourth club, because South would have lost only one spade and two diamonds.
