‘Amazing Grace’ – The story of 2 women on a mission In 2008, Grace Waller was 15, a competitive swimmer attending DeKalb High School. She began noticing something was wrong with one leg and felt a tumor behind her knee.

Doctors confirmed she had a cancer called osteocarcinoma.

Her life was in danger and her teen years would change drastically. Rush Medical Center in Chicago became her home off-and-on for the next year as she went through 25 rounds of radiation, interrupted only by major reconstructive surgery to replace her knee and part of the femur.

After being part of an experimental treatment, the tumor was declared 80 percent gone.

But her immune system was compromised so badly she could not attend school the next year and was mostly confined to home. During that year, tutors came to the house to help with her studies so she was able to graduate with her class.

Afterward she resumed swimming and even received an athletic scholarship to attend Oakland College in Rochester, Michigan.

She now has graduated with a degree in communications. Bronte Stewart was her roommate all four years and they became close friends, and together founded an organization to help other young people with cancer. It is appropriately named “Amazing Grace” and became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in October 2015.

Their mission is to provide personalized care packages, designed to offer comfort and entertainment to enhance the quality of young cancer patients’ lives.

Grace said when they can afford it they even provide laptops to those who request them.

During the many months of treatments Grace was able to keep a positive outlook about survival and recovery because of friends from around DeKalb sending her

“I filled an envelope with names of friends and other young patients, so when I felt really down I would pull a name from that envelope and do something for that person, sending a simple picture I had colored, a handmade bracelet or a personal note. It kept me going,” she said.

She has found a career path in journalism as a member of the Northern Illinois University Athletic Department media staff, covering wrestling and women’s golf.

This involves preparing news releases and utilizing social media.

Being familiar with the digital world, she and her former roommate, who stayed in Michigan, regularly keep in touch via Skype and FaceTime.

Their eventual goal in 10 years is to make Amazing Grace a full-time endeavor. They already have reached out to help youth in several states and even one girl in Poland who is undergoing treatment for cancer.

Their fundraising ramped up this past year when they held an event in Michigan that raised $10,000.

Then a fundraiser spearheaded by her former coach, now at Hinsdale Central, added another $2,000 to their bank account.

Grace emphasized that every dollar is used to purchase items for the care package – no salaries or overhead in this startup.

And the best news of all I found: She has been cancer-free for six years now. Amen to that.

Residents offered numerous chances to meet mayoral candidates

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – With early voting underway and a little more than a month remaining before Election Day April 4, schedules will be packed for the city’s four mayoral candidates as they make their bids to secure votes.

Incumbent John Rey and challengers Jerry Smith, Michael Embrey and Misty Haji-Sheikh are scheduled for multiple forums in March, including an event Wednesday at The Egyptian Theatre and a series of events hosted by One DeKalb, a March 14 event at New Hope Baptist Church at 1201 Twombly Road, a meetand-greet March 21 at The House Cafe, 263 E. Lincoln Highway, and a forum at the University Village Community Room at 722 N. Annie Glidden Road.

The latter three events make up the “Building Bridges” forums hosted by One DeKalb, a collaboration between Northern Illinois University students and DeKalb County Community Gardens Director Dan Kenney.

Outside of these events, candidates will be focused on individual appearances, including fundraisers and community outreach.

Rey, who is running with a platform of good governance, economic development and public safety as the highest priority goals, will be holding a public fundraiser at 6 p.m. March 23 at Eduardo’s Mexican Restaurant, 214 E. Lincoln Highway, and also will be doing strategic mailings and distributing other material, such as door hangers.

“I’m very much looking forward to the community engagement that is anticipated from those community forums to be able to talk to citizens and learn more of their concerns and have dialogue,” Rey said. “I’m continuing to walk neighborhoods and talk with constituents throughout the community, and that will primarily be on weekends over the next five weeks.”

Rey said he has received about $11,000, including a $5,000 loan he made to his campaign committee.

Smith, who said he believes his business and social service acumen set him apart from other candidates, also will be walking through each ward to gather community input while looking at additional advertising.

“In the latter few days, I’ll be reminding folks that the votes are critical, and we want to get folks who we know will be supporting us to get to the polls,” Smith said. “It’s great to have so many folks interested in the election.”

Through a total of 216 letters sent to community members he knew, Smith has received more than $19,000 in campaign contributions.

“I am humbled,” Smith said. “The funding exceeded anything I thought could be raise for this election.”

While he did receive early backing from Barb City Action Committee, Smith said he has not received any money from the group.

Embrey, who said his business experience and willingness to incorporate resident input would make him an effective leader, said he is looking to organize a fundraiser toward the end of the month, but will be spending nearly every day until the election in meetings and other discussions.

He did not have an exact figure of total campaign donations, and contributions could not be found on the

She said that she had been asked to run for mayor when she had been campaigning to be on the DeKalb County Board, which was a huge acknowledgement of what she could do for the city. She also did not have an exact figure on campaign donations, and figures could not be found with the Illinois Board of Elections, but said she received small donations from a lot of people.

SYCAMORE – Families who pay for their children to ride school buses in Sycamore School District 427 might not have that option next year under proposed changes to the district’s transportation system.

Officials in the district also are looking to put a proposal for staggered school start times on hold at least until the 2018-19 school year.

Chief Financial Officer Nicole Stuckert presented the potential changes to board members Tuesday, including the elimination of the payto-ride system used by 69 students this year.

Students who live within a mile and a half of their school are not considered eligible for the bus, but they can arrange for bus service for a $500 fee each school year. Stuckert said the fees have brought in $15,000 to $20,000 annually for the past five years.

Under the proposal, only eligible riders who live further than a mile and a half from school would be able to take the bus, and they would be transported only to and from their assigned home bus stops.

“We will not be transporting students to day care centers or home day cares,” Stuckert said. “You will be picked up at your home bus stop, you will be taken to school, and the same will happen after school.”

The proposal also includes creating

a task force to examine bus schedules and school start times. The task force would be asked to recommend changes by December to be implemented in the 2018-19 school year.

The district’s recommendation is to keep start times the same for the upcoming school year, although possible staggered start times were presented to the board during previous meetings.

Lengthy bus rides for some students were a factor in the proposed changes, Stuckert said.

“In the morning, an elementary student is picked up at 7:06 a.m.; they’re not dropped off until 8:04 a.m. potentially,” she said. “So they’re on the bus for an hour.”

About 42 “out-placed in district” students ride the bus, meaning the school nearest them was at capacity, so they take the bus to attend a different school.

Stuckert said these students stop at Sycamore High School before transferring to a second bus, which contributes to longer riding times as well.

“We have a group of students that attend West Elementary, and they live in town, but instead of going straight home they come to the high school and sit between 3:15 and 3:30 p.m., then they switch their bus and don’t get home until 4:05 p.m.,” she said.

She said the task force would be asked to come up with ways to reduce the time spent on buses and eliminate transfers at the high school.

Born: April 21, 1929; in Streator, IL Died: February 23, 2017; in Mendota, IL S. Maxine Pfau, 87, of Ottawa, formerly of Hinckley, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Heritage Health in Mendota.

Memorial Mass will be held at 11:30am, Friday, March 3, 2017 at St. Columba Church, with Rev. David Kipfer officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00am, prior to the services, at Ottawa Funeral Home, with the Rosary at 10:30am. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery.

Maxine was born April 21, 1929 in Streator to John and Sabina (Butchko) Balke. She married Charles H. Pfau on August 7, 1948; he passed away in October 2007.

Maxine was a homemaker, catechism instructor for St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Sandwich, Squaw Grove Township clerk, and she also worked at the Hinckley Post Office. She was a member of St. Columba Church and Hinckley Homemakers. Maxine loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchild.

She is survived by six children, Charles H. Pfau Jr. of North Aurora, IL, Barbara (Bill) Johnson of Marietta, GA, Alice (Bill) Pfau-Pakenham of Earlville, IL, Donald Pfau of Olympia Fields, IL, Edward (Teri) Pfau of Bement, IL, and William (Patty) Pfau of Leland, IL; six grandchildren, Wade Johnson, Brynne (Matt) Gowens, Matthew and Christine Pfau, and Brian and Austin Pfau; and one great-grandchild, Tucker Gowens.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; six sisters, Wilma Majernik, Burdette Lewis, Rose Sepesy, Esther Thanasse, Rita Adamchak and Dolaraine Balke, in infancy; and one brother, John “Jack” Balke.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association.

DeKALB – The City Council approved seven individuals for the newly revised Airport Advisory Board during Monday’s meeting.

After the passage of an amendment to restructure the board’s duties, Mayor John Rey requested applications for four individuals who would ensure the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport would remain a regional asset for the community.

The seven appointed members were approved unanimously by the council.

Ryan James, assistant professor of geography at Northern Illinois University and Bernard Pupino, a member of the former advisory board, were appointed to two-year terms ending Dec. 31, 2019.

In his application, James said that as a scholar in regional economic development and being trained as an urban planner, he can see the multiple ways in which the airport serves the community while understanding the administrative management of the airport as a public resource.

Pupino said in his application that his 48 years of manufacturing management experience in addition to his three years of board experience gives him a unique and important perspective on the issues and challenges facing the airport.

Robert Owens and James Rhoades, who also served on the board, were appointed to four-year terms through Dec. 31, 2021.

Owens was appointed to the board in 2000, and Rhoades was appointed in 1982.

Rhoades has been with the DeKalb Police Department for 45 years and said he would have the ability to pass on thoughts and ideas from the past board to the new one.

Owens, a state-certified airport commissioner, said in his application that the airport needs to see charter flights on a regular basis.

DeKalb County Economic Development Corp. Executive Director Paul Borek, DeKalb Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Matt Duffy and DeKalb County Administrator Gary Hanson were all appointed to three-year terms.

The cold temperature combined with strong winds and rain were not enough to stop the Rev. Amy Fallon from providing a quick, free service to a fast-paced, on-the-go community.

Under the shelter of a blue canopy, Fallon stood in front of Grace Place Campus Ministry, a interdenominational place of worship at the corner of Normal Road and Lucinda Avenue in DeKalb, approaching passers-by with a simple question, “Would you like ashes for Ash Wednesday?”

Most kept walking. Some stopped long enough to remove their earbuds, but few took Fallon up on the offer. “It is what it is,” she said with a laugh.

The ashes come from the charred remains of last year’s palm leaves that are ground into a fine powder to be placed in the shape of a cross on the foreheads of those willing to take a minute from their busy schedule.

The Christian holiday kicks off Lent, a 40-day period of repentance inspired by Christ’s 40 days in the desert.

The Lenten season ends with Easter, which falls on April 16 this year.

Police: DeKalb man dropped cocaine while he tried to flee DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man was arrested Tuesday after he ran from a police officer who approached him in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant.

According to a news release, a DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputy spotted LeQuan V. Johnson, 31, of the 200 block of Bent Grass Drive, DeKalb, in the parking lot at Portillo’s, 1780 DeKalb Ave., LeQuan V. Johnson Sycamore.

The deputy recognized Johnson as having a warrant for his arrest, but Johnson ran from the deputy when he attempted to arrest him.

Johnson was seen dropping cocaine from his pockets as he ran, Sher- Padre iff’s Chief Deputy Andy Bibbs Sullivan said.

Johnson was captured after a short chase on the lot at DeKalb-Sycamore

DeKalb and Sycamore police assisted in the investigation, Sullivan said.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Senate’s top Democrat abruptly canceled critical votes Wednesday on a plan to end the state’s historic budget stalemate, accusing Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner of sabotaging a compromise that had been months in the making.

Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago ditched his earlier vow to call votes on key parts of the so-called “grand bargain,” including an income-tax increase and property-tax freeze. After the Senate clocked out, Cullerton questioned the first-term governor’s sincerity in meeting legislative Democrats half way to end the nation’s longest budget stalemate in nearly a century.

“He’s got to grow up,” Cullerton said about Rauner.

Cullerton had promised votes on the toughest aspects of the sprawling compromise plan he’s engineered since before the new year with Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno of Lemont. They had boasted that neither the House nor Rauner was involved; Rauner insisted he was on the sidelines.

Democrats and Republicans spent most of the day in private meetings.

When they regrouped on the floor late in the afternoon, Cullerton tersely claimed Rauner had hijacked the plan.

OTTAWA – Communities across Illinois are cleaning up after deadly storms producing tornadoes moved through much of the Midwest.

Lawyer: Evidence in hand for ex-prosecutor’s retrial

SPRINGFIELD – The attorney representing the former Illinois prosecutor charged with first-degree murder said evidence not available during the defendant’s first trial has turned up.

Former Adams County Assistant State’s Attorney Curtis Lovelace is accused in the 2006 death of 38-year-old Cory Lovelace. His first trial ended with a deadlocked jury.

During Wednesday’s opening statements, Jon Loevy said he has emails exchanged between Quincy Police Detective Adam Gibson and medical professionals Gibson sought opinions from on how Cory Lovelace died.

Loevy said the first seven people Gibson contacted said there was no apparent evidence of foul play. But on his eighth try, Gibson found a pathologist

Weather cancels meeting between Rauner, rapper

CHICAGO – A meeting between Grammy-winning artist Chance the Rapper and Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has been canceled because of severe weather.

They were supposed to meet Wednesday to discuss school funding in Chicago. Rauner will instead be touring areas of Illinois hit hard by a deadly storm.

The Chicago performer, whose name is Chancelor Bennett, said Wednesday on Twitter that the meeting was canceled, which Rauner’s office confirmed.

Talk of the meeting sprung up after the first-term governor congratulated the rapper via Twitter for winning three Grammy Awards last month.

Rauner said the state was “proud” the rapper was from Illinois. Chance replied

Even those were adopted mostly with Democratic votes.

NEW YORK – Oprah Winfrey said President Donald Trump’s victory has her rethinking whether she could be elected to the White House.

Winfrey, a Hillary Clinton supporter, spoke with financier David Rubenstein in December for an interview for his Bloomberg Television show, which premiered this week.

Winfrey said that before Trump’s election she thought that she didn’t have the necessary government experience to run the country but now she thinks differently.

The billionaire businessman had never before held public office before his election victory in November.

Winfrey also touched on her 25 years hosting a syndicated talk show. She said her ultimate purpose of the show was to let people know that “we really are more alike than we are different.”

Trump embraces pomp, circumstance of address

WASHINGTON – Most mornings, President Donald Trump gathers business leaders, union executives or others at the White House for made-for-television meetings meant to project the image of a can-do chief executive.

Trump sits at the center of one of the White House’s ornate meeting rooms, offers brief remarks and invites assembled journalists to stick around to hear his guests praise his plans.

Few tangible policy decisions emerge from the listening sessions. But the public parts of the meeting are carried in full on cable TV, underscoring the ways in which an unconventional new president is using the traditional trappings of the office to his advantage.

Playing the role of president is a crucial skill that doesn’t always come easily to Oval Office occupants. The theater of the presidency can’t fully mask policy fumbles or awkward disputes, but it can shape the way in which a commander in chief is perceived by the public and can help keep anxious political allies in line.

That was particularly evident Tuesday night, when Trump delivered his first address to a joint session of Congress.

The new president stepped into the House chamber with historically low public approval ratings after a turbulent start to his administration. Some Republicans are growing weary of his refusal – or inability – to stop hurling personal insults and his seeming unwillingness to focus on the GOP’s ambitious domestic policy agenda.

Trump responded by embracing both the traditional pomp and decorum of a presidential address. He delivered a restrained and largely optimistic speech, rarely veering off script. In an emotional high point, he singled out the widow of a fallen Navy SEAL who was sitting in the guest box and joined lawmakers in sustained applause for her husband’s sacrifice.

Republicans swooned.

“You saw an outsider last night sort of hit his stride,” declared Sen. David Perdue of Georgia.

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty called the address “less Mad Max and more Ronald Reagan.”

“It buys him some good will and some time to fill out more positions and the roadmap of where they want to go,” Pawlenty said.

To the president’s critics, it was a frustrating reminder that Trump is often judged by a different standard and praised for stylistic shifts that rarely stick.

“For all the past talk of pivots that never happened, the reality is he’s going to benefit like last night from the trappings of the presidency,” said Brian Fallon, a former top communications aide to Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

After celebrating the speech with the president over hot dogs and popcorn in the White House residence late Tuesday night, White House aides moved swiftly to keep a good moment going.

Plans to follow Trump’s speech with the signing of a revamped, yet still controversial, travel ban executive order Wednesday were delayed, so the administration avoided trampling on the looping highlight reel of Trump’s speech on cable TV. Press secretary Sean Spicer’s daily briefing, which has become a must-watch TV event, was switched to an off-camera gaggle.

One of the surprising paradoxes of Trump’s stunning political rise is that the former reality TV star hasn’t always succeeded on the biggest stages. He promised a high-wattage show at the Republican National Convention, but the fourday gathering was often disjointed and lacked star power.

Trump gave uneven performances in his three debates against Clinton and he stepped on his own inaugural message by complaining that the crowd size wasn’t being accurately covered.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Allowing insurers to market health care policies across state lines is one of President Donald Trump’s main ideas for bringing down costs.

While supporters of the idea cast it as a way to make insurance policies more competitive, critics said it’s unlikely to result in more affordable plans and could undermine stronger consumer protections in states such as California and Hawaii. Such a “race to the bottom” could leave some older consumers with health problems unable to afford coverage.

And there’s another complication: Trump’s proposal appears unlikely to pass Congress unless Democrats cooperate. Congressional aides involved with health care legislation said the proposal to allow cross-state insurance sales would need 60 votes in the Senate.

In his speech to Congress on Tuesday night, Trump said the nation must turn

to new ideas to help control costs.

“The time has come to give Americans the freedom to purchase health insurance across state lines,” the president said.

The estimated 20 million Americans who buy coverage directly from an insurer would be affected. Their health plans are regulated by state governments, which decide the minimum benefits that must be covered and mediate disputes between insurers and their customers, among other consumer protections.

Variation between the states was extreme until former President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, which raised the minimum standards for legal coverage nationwide.

One of the sharpest differences was coverage for maternity care. Mandy Burke of San Leandro, California, who is pregnant with a girl due in May, doesn’t want to go back to a time when it might be more difficult or more expensive to find coverage for pregnancy care.

The costs for repeated prenatal visits, ultrasounds, blood tests and a hospitalization for delivery are insane, said Burke, a 39-year-old musician and music teacher who has subsidized health coverage through California’s insurance exchange. “That was something we

China can step up with famine aid in South Sudan

If South Sudan’s famine is “man-made,” and it is, then maybe man can also unmake it. Given the country’s unstable government and the U.S.’s uncertain global leadership, however, most of the effort will have to come from China.

More than 40 percent of South Sudan’s 11 million people don’t have enough to eat not because of drought or other natural causes but because of their country’s civil war, which started in 2013. Mayhem and disorder have taken tens of thousands of lives and forced more than 1.5 million to flee.

Meanwhile, corruption and mismanagement have contributed to a shrinking economy.

The U.S. has been the biggest provider of assistance to South Sudan, but President Donald Trump, who has railed against foreign aid while remaining near-silent on Africa, seems unlikely to sustain that commitment.

And as with so many other crises, a stalemate at the UN Security Council has stymied efforts to hold South Sudan’s recalcitrant President Salva Kiir to account. Now Nikki Haley, the U.S. UN ambassador, is rightly questioning whether it makes sense for the U.S. to continue paying the lion’s share of a costly and ineffective UN peacekeeping mission.

Yet the world can’t simply abandon South Sudan, for both altruistic and self-interested reasons. Some 5 million South Sudanese, now facing starvation or catastrophe through no fault of their own, deserve help.

The biggest outside power with the greatest practical interest in securing peace in South Sudan is China. Chinese companies have a 40 percent stake in South Sudan’s largest oil fields, which once accounted for 5 percent of China’s oil imports. Before the civil war, dozens of other Chinese companies were active there, with thousands of Chinese managers and workers.

It’s not as if China isn’t involved; its large contingent of peacekeepers has even suffered casualties.

It has also backed regional diplomatic efforts to solve the crisis.

Still, it has more leverage left to use. China should insist on the unimpeded delivery of aid, which Kiir’s government is currently blocking. It could sweeten the pot by boosting its own aid contribution, which has badly lagged its peacekeeping commitment and development loans. China could also lead a more robust diplomatic effort, including in the Security Council, to enforce a broader ceasefire.

President Xi Jinping has made expansive pledges in recent years about cooperation with Africa and China’s commitment to global leadership. South Sudan is one place where China can put its power and influence to better use.

The demise (we hope) of an ugly lawsuit Among the unfortunate consequences of Congress’ failure to come up with a permanent replacement for the Federal National Mortgage Association and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, none carried more mischievous potential than the long-running attempt by hedge funds to gain control of the companies by court order – and make a taxpayer-subsidized killing in the process.

To its great credit, however, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit has delivered what we can only hope is the final judicial blow to this opportunistic lawsuit.

To review: As Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac headed toward bankruptcy amid the housing meltdown of 2008, their federal regulator took them over pursuant to fresh legal authority from Congress. Over the next several years, the U.S. treasury, in effect, advanced the twins $187 billion to prevent them from collapsing and triggering what could have been a global financial catastrophe. In 2012, the regulator and Treasury rewrote the takeover to make sure that all future profits would accrue to the government, not the speculators

who had meanwhile snapped up beaten-down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac stock at pennies a share. This reflected the Obama administration’s reasonable view that bottom-feeding hedge funds should not reap a windfall from a recovery that massive investment by taxpayers made possible.

Amid much high-minded rhetoric about property rights and the rule of law, the funds took their case to federal court, arguing that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac’s regulator lacked specific statutory authority to carry out the 2012 profit sweep. Proving that legal costs are no object in pursuit of a multibillion-dollar potential payoff, the hedge funds persisted in their lawsuit even after an adverse ruling by Judge Royce Lamberth of the U.S. District Court in Washington two and a half years ago.

It was that appeal whose most consequential argument the D.C. Circuit dismissed last week, in an opinion written by Judge Patricia Millett and Senior Judge Douglas Ginsburg that basically confirmed Lamberth’s reasoning.

Key to the case, they wrote, was Congress’ instruction, in the law establishing Fannie Mae-Freddie Mac’s regulator,

that “no court may take any action to restrain or affect the exercise of [its] powers or functions” over the distressed entities. A dissenting judge, Janice Rogers Brown, objected that this rule should not apply since Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac’s regulator exceeded its authority by turning over all the profits to the Treasury in the first place. This, she wrote, was the act of “a banana republic.”

What that hyperbole overlooks is the fact that there might not have been a republic – or at least an economy – left to argue about if the agency had not rescued Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Second-guessing that at the behest of speculators would be the height of injustice.

Still, Brown has half a point: The “extraordinary” situation at the two entities has gone on too long.

The chances that Congress finally will bring a fair and reasonable end to this situation may be better now that the D.C. Circuit has ruled against the one thing worse than endless limbo at the mortgage-finance giants – turning them over for a pittance to Wall Street gamblers.

I have lived the majority of my life in DeKalb and almost exclusively in DeKalb County, except for four years at Northwestern, 1961 to ’65, and three years on active duty in the U.S. Army, 1966 to ’69, in the 4th Armored Division.

My working life was in the family business in Cortland Township and the city of DeKalb. In many ways, my life paralleled my good friend Jerry Smith, candidate for mayor for the city of DeKalb.

He was born in Dixon and came to DeKalb to attend Northern Illinois University from 1961 to ’66, majoring in journalism. While at NIU, he worked for the Northern Star and WLBK-AM radio.

After graduation, he taught for a year and worked part time at WLBK. He too served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to ’69 in West Germany in the 3rd Infantry Division. We were stationed pretty close to one another, but only found that out this year.

When Jerry got back to DeKalb in 1969, he went to work for DeKalb County Press (now Castle PrinTech) for 30 years, where he helped grow that small company into a national leader of newspaper, TV, magazines and inserts.

In 1999, Jerry joined the DeKalb County Community Foundation as its executive director, serving in that position until 2009, when he became an emeritus

I have had the privilege of knowing Mary and calling her a friend for more than six years. I met Mary through our mutual involvement in Life Missions. Life Missions is a high school mission group that is part of the Sycamore United Methodist Church.

Life Missions has served throughout

the United States. The City Clerk’s Office is responsible for maintaining and keeping many of the city’s public records.

This office requires a dedicated public servant, someone organized who pays attention to detail and is responsive to both the needs of the public and other representatives of city government.

Mary is extremely qualified to serve in this position, having worked as an account executive in the mortgage industry.

I have met very few people whose people skills can compare with Mary’s.

I would hope that they heard what I heard: residents deeply concerned with keeping health care for their sick loved

These people are Kinzinger’s constituents in the 16th Congressional District.

They deserve to be heard. I personally delivered a letter to one of his aides that day and never heard a response from Kinzinger. I had to call his office this week to ask why my letter and past emails have not received responses.

I also expressed concern about issues this week that can profoundly hurt children in America: HR 610, the move toward deportations, and the rollback of transgender rights implemented under the Obama administration.

It would seem to me that if Kinzinger is not going to attend town hall meetings, then he and his staff should at least be reading the mail he receives from his constituents.

After my phone call, I immediately got two emails, which were nothing but form letters. Shame on Gillepsie. Shame on Kinzinger.

Republicans in the audience were obviously relieved. But they were cheering for a very different speech than most of them would have given.

Trump didn’t even pay lip service to social conservatism, or to cutting total federal spending. Instead he talked up infrastructure spending, protectionism and child care subsidies. He said nothing about financing his ambitious agenda.

People who like Trump’s ideological heterodoxies say a more conventional Republican would not have won the election. Maybe they’re right, or maybe a standard-issue Republican would have

“They were hustling more than we were, getting after it more, and honestly making more shots than we were,” Mizgalski said. “We need to be better at that, but luckily we were a little better in the fourth quarter.”

The Cogs were playing their fifth

straight game without Zach Miller, who was leading the team in scoring this year.

“It’s a lot to replace, the athleticism he brings to the floor,” Jenkins said.

“But you know what, I give Justin McNeal a heck of a lot of credit for trying to keep us in it offensively. I thought the other guys played extremely hard.

Klint (Wewetzer), what he does, he does all the little things inside for us. ... We just couldn’t buy a bucket early, until Klint finally hit that 15-footer for our first field goal.”

By the numbers: Ty Sulaver finished

with 13 points for Sycamore. Foley and McNeal combined for 47 points for the Cogs – no other G-K player had more than three points. Foley also had eight rebounds and four steals, while McNeal had seven rebounds and four blocks. Sycamore finished with a 42-31 edge on the boards.

Beyond the stats: The Spartans were 12 of 15 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and 20 of 24 for the game.

They said it: “We got a little sloppy late there on the defense end, but honestly I think (we won) because of our good start,” Mizgalski said. “We had a lot of confidence, we built up a big lead, but we let them back in. But we had that big lead in the beginning, and we were able to hold on.”

Up next: Kaneland and Sycamore meet for the third time this season in the regional final at 7 p.m. Friday in Sycamore. Each team won on its homecourt, with the Knights winning the most recent meeting, 51-38, Feb. 10.

SYCAMORE – With its 17-point lead whittled down to two in the fourth quarter, the Sycamore boys basketball team was struggling to get its offense back on track Wednesday against Genoa-Kingston in a Class 3A Sycamore Regional semifinal.

Jack Mizgalski found an answer for the No. 5 Spartans, scoring on three straight possessions as Sycamore hung on down the stretch for a 64-56 win against the No. 3 Cogs.

“I was just trying to help my teammates out and get a few buckets,” Mizgalski said.

Mizgalski finished with nine points in the fourth quarter and 18 for the game. Keyshawn Stallworth dominated in the paint for the Spartans (12-15) with 20 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks.

This was the third time this season the Spartans have defeated the Cogs, and Sycamore coach Ryan Picolotti said their size advantage had a lot to do with it. “[G-K] Coach [Corey] Jenkins does a great job. Those guys come out and play hard,” said Picolotti, whose Spartans advance to the regional final against No. 8 Kaneland. “We got out to a hot start. They kept fighting, but we felt like we had some opportunities to take advantage of some matchups, and we were able to do that. At the end of the game, our seniors came up big.”

Sycamore scored the first 10 points and led by as much as 17 in the second quarter before the Cogs started clawing back behind a monster game from Justin McNeal, who scored 28 points.

Bailey Foley scored 19 points and provided a second-half spark for the Cogs, opening the third quarter with a 3, then grabbing a steal for a layup to get G-K within single digits for the first time since the 10-0 Sycamore run to start the game.

“Second, third, fourth quarter we won. First quarter was our demise,” Jenkins said. “We just had a bad start.

We played panicked a little bit early on.”

DeKalb’s comeback falls short Barbs lose to Falcons in regional semifinal

sports@daily-chronicle.com ELMHURST – The Barbs’ season may be over, but they ended it in style.

After relinquishing the lead in the second quarter, DeKalb clawed its way back, holding Wheaton North scoreless for much of the fourth quarter while going on a 10-point run of its own. It just wasn’t enough, as the Barbs fell, 51-45, in a Class 4A York Regional semifinal Wednesday.

Michael Mitchell sent the crowd into a frenzy with back-to-back 3-pointers that helped DeKalb pull within six, 49-43, with 3:26 left to play. Mitchell accounted for eight of DeKalb’s points in the final quarter and had 25 in his final game as a Barb.

“In the fourth quarter, we just fought,” Mitchell said. “Coach told us, ‘The game’s not over.’ We did our best to keep each other in the game mentally and physically. … Unfortunately, it

Cole Tucker was fouled a minute later and sank both free throws to get the Barbs within four, but DeKalb gave the points right back after fouling the Falcons.

Darvon Sisson was second in scoring for DeKalb with 10 points. Tucker finished with six.

DeKalb hit the gas early, jumping out to a 9-2 lead midway through the first quarter. The Barbs held Wheaton

North scoreless for almost four minutes, before committing four fouls in the span of a minute to let the Falcons close the gap.

Mitchell widened the DeKalb lead with a 3 from the right side with 4.2 seconds left in the quarter. But Wheaton North’s Rowan McGowen sank one of his own at the buzzer to make it 13-9 in favor of the Barbs at the end of the first.

Wheaton North outscored the Barbs, 21-7, in the second quarter to break the game open.

It all started when Luke Anthony made a steal and sped down court, scored and was fouled. The Falcons capitalized on the 3-point play to jump ahead 14-13 for their first lead of the game.

Four fouls and two turnovers put the Barbs into a hole they couldn’t dig themselves out of for the rest of the half. Wheaton North took advantage, going on an 8-0 run to close out the last 1:34 to lead 30-20 at the break.

“I was proud of our kids for coming back the way they did. We really fought hard in that fourth quarter,” DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said. “We put ourselves in such a big hole in that

second quarter. ... We started well and finished really well, but the middle really caught up to us.”

DeKalb played solid defense and forced the Falcons to take some less than desirable shots, but struggled to rebound. As a team, the Barbs combined for only eight rebounds in the game.

“We had some kids this year who really struggled [with] putting two hands on the ball and grabbing rebounds,” Biancalana said. “Those 50-50 balls have to go your way. When you’re at this level of competition in the regional semifinal, you can’t make too many mistakes because they come back to bite you and certainly that’s what happened tonight.”

Mitchell said the Barbs have no reason to hang their heads. DeKalb finished its season with a 19-11 record and back-to-back conference championships.

“We had very big shoes to fill,” Mitchell said of last year’s 20-plus win season. “We won conference, that was one of our biggest objectives. I think a lot of us grew individually on and off the court. This season was very good to us.”

Huskies’ offense goes cold in loss to Rockets

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – For a two-minute stretch to close out the first quarter, the Northern Illinois women’s basketball team looked every bit the scoring machine it’s become this season.

The rest of the game was a different story.

The Huskies struggled from the floor Wednesday and suffered a 79-75 loss to Toledo at the NIU Convocation Center.

NIU (19-9, 12-5 in Mid-American Conference West) shot 36 percent from the floor and 24 percent from beyond the arc, but was outstanding during a 17-0 run that closed out the first quarter – including one stretch in which the Huskies scored 13 points in 1:46.

The scoring spree helped give NIU a lead as large as 15 with 7:36 left in the second quarter.

After scoring 24 points in the first quarter, the Huskies scored a combined 26 points in the second and third quarters on 10-for-40 shooting (25 percent).

NIU senior guard Ally Lehman was fantastic in what the Huskies are hoping was the final home game of her career because they are on the verge of a first-round bye in the MAC Tournament. She tied a Huskies single-season record with her 16th double-double – and was one assist shy from her third triple-double – by finishing with 31 points, 16 rebounds and nine assists.

It was the third time in the past seven games that Lehman has scored at least 31 points.

“We feel as a coaching staff that

there’s a lot of people who will struggle to guard Ally one-on-one, as far as her aggressiveness off the bounce,” Carlsen said. “She played like how you expect a senior to play – hit some big shots, played all 40 minutes. I know we’re going to get that from her. Those numbers are great, but she’ll tell you the only number she cares about is the four-point loss.”

The Huskies are tied for third in the conference – along with Kent State, which they beat twice this season – with one game remaining, but there’s a scenario in which NIU, Toledo, Kent State and Ohio finish with a record of 12-6.

The top four seeds get an automatic bye to the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio, but the Huskies have lost three of their past four games.

“I mean, I guess it [stinks] to lose your last, hopefully your last, home game on your home court,” Lehman said. “Now it’s been three (losses) in a row – well, I guess it feels like it. We need to come back against Western

[Michigan]. We need a lot more focus.”

The Huskies led 59-56 after a layup by sophomore Mikayla Voigt with 6:58 left in the game, but their offense went cold during the next five minutes. They didn’t make another field goal until a layup by senior Cassidy Glenn with 2:17 remaining – allowing the Rockets (20-8, 11-6 in MAC West) to go on an 11-2 run to take the lead for good.

By the numbers: Toledo outrebounded the Huskies, 65-54 – including 25-17 offensively – and outscored them 22-13 in second-chance points.

Beyond the stats: In what may be her final shot in a game inside the NIU Convocation Center, Lehman drained a long 3-pointer as time expired at the final buzzer.

They said it: “You have to go out and beat Western,” Lehman said of potential ties in the standings. “That should be the mindset anyway.”

Up next: The Huskies travel to Western Michigan at 1 p.m. Saturday in the regular-season finale.

Bears prepared for Jeffery to hit market next week

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com INDIANAPOLIS – Bears general manager Ryan Pace is prepared for Alshon Jeffery to hit the market, but wouldn’t rule out a return for the team’s best receiver.

Pace also said Jay Cutler’s situation is “fluid,” with “a lot of conversations going on” between the team, Cutler and his agent, Bus Cook.

Welcome to the NFL Scouting Combine, where Pace admits it’s difficult to provide details.

“The two press conferences that are hardest are this one and the one right before the draft,” Pace said. “I’m trying to work with you all, but I hope you appreciate that.”

Pace’s candor reflects the challenge for GMs this week, eight days before free agency opens and two months be-

fore the draft, when no one wants to show his hand.

What we could glean from Pace is where the Bears stand with Jeffery and recovery updates on Kyle Long and Kevin White.

Pace began his media session speaking on Jeffery, who will not receive the franchise tag.

“I think sometimes when you can’t come to a common ground with Alshon Jeffery a player and an agent, sometimes it’s necessary to kind of test the market to determine that player’s value, and that’s really where we’re at,” Pace said. “He’s a good player, and we’ll see how it plays out. But I think there are certain instances where testing the market is a necessary part of the process.”

Pace said tagging Jeffery for the second year in a row “really wasn’t an

option,” but that he will have “a lot of conversations” with Jeffery’s agent, Tory Dandy, throughout the week.

As for what the Bears can sell Jeffery on, coach John Fox said it would start with familiarity.

“I’d say [Jeffery] knows us better than anybody else he could potentially go to,” Fox said. “I think it’s a positive feeling. With typically these things, it comes down to the market value. It’s like walking into a store right now at this time of year and there’s no price tags. We kind of develop that moving forward. My experience has been that’s a very fluid process.”

White’s status: If Jeffery exits via free agency, that only heightens the importance of getting a healthy Kevin White on the field to produce like the No. 1 receiver the Bears drafted him to be.

“He’s coming along fast. I still have a lot of confidence in him,” Pace said.

“He has a lot of confidence in himself.

We’re getting daily reports on his progress. I just want to see steady, consistent progress from him. Right now, he’s getting his body all in alignment, and he’s feeling good. When I see footage of kind of where he’s at now, I get excited.

I just want to see steady improvement.”

No shoulder surgery for Long: Pace confirmed that the three-time Pro Bowl guard won’t need surgery on his shoulder as he recovers from his ankle surgery.

“It wasn’t just one or two doctors, it was multiple opinions and doctors with a lot of conviction that this was the right thing to do,” Pace said. “He’s strong. He’s kind of a freak genetically. His shoulder’s doing good. There’s going to be maintenance as far as strength and everything, which he’s doing. We don’t have a lot of concerns with that right now.”

INDIANAPOLIS – For those of us on the NFL beat, the combine is our version of La La Land, with open access to almost every head coach and general manager in the NFL, plus the gold that can be mined depending on who you might just bump into in the cavernous halls of the Indiana Convention Center.

The problem, however, is that we all still are at work, and their jobs are to make sure everyone else knows as little as possible about whatever they’re thinking relative to free agency and the draft to maintain as solid a competitive advantage as they can.

That leaves us listening and watching as intently as we can for every phrase, inflection, expression and slip of the tongue we can to try to gauge the particular direction a club might be heading.

So, I’m here to report that I think Bears GM Ryan Pace is preparing for another year of rebuilding with his focus on a perennial contender over winning football games in 2017.

Pardon’s layup at buzzer lifts Northwestern over Michigan

EVANSTON – Dererk Pardon scored on a layup at the buzzer off a long inbound pass from Nathan Taphorn to give Northwestern a 67-65 victory over Michigan on Wednesday night.

The Wolverines’ Zak Irvin had just missed a 3-pointer in the closing seconds.

The ball got knocked out of bounds and, after a timeout, Taphorn threw a baseballstyle pass the length of the court, hitting Pardon in stride for the winning shot.

As the buzzer sounded, fans packing Welsh-Ryan Arena poured onto the court.

The win was just what the Wildcats (21-9, 10-7 Big Ten) – trying to make their first NCAA tournament – needed after dropping five of seven.

Vic Law scored 18 for Northwestern.

Bryant McIntosh added 13 points and five assists, and the Wildcats matched their highest conference win total since the 193233 team tied for the Big Ten championship.

CHICAGO – Patrick Kane and the Blackhawks pushed aside the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Kane had his second hat trick in three games, Scott Darling made 36 saves and the Hawks beat the Penguins, 4-1, Wednesday night for their fifth straight victory and 10th in 11 games.

Richard Panik also scored to help the Hawks pull within three points of firstplace Minnesota in the Central Division and Western Conference.

Kane, last season’s MVP, has a team-leading 27 goals – scoring 12 times and adding seven assists in his past 11 games.

Kane said he was pumped up for first meeting this season between the past two Stanley Cup winners.

“It felt like a playoff game out there,” Kane said. “It’s a team we don’t really see a lot.”

VIEWS Jesse Severson last Saturday before packing up and traveling home on either a bus or a plane, and then turning around with minimum rest for an important contest against suddenly competent Eastern Michigan – the first MAC West game of the year for NIU. Before thinking NIU has it bad, Ball State has to run the brutal twogames-in-five-days gauntlet twice this season – Oct. 21 against Central Michigan and Oct. 26 against Toledo, along with Nov. 16 against Buffalo and Nov. 21 against Miami (Ohio).

The only saving grace for those poor Cardinals players is that all four games are at home.

Other conferences have done that Saturday-to-Thursday turnaround – the Mountain West, for example – and you see it in the NFL with its truly hard-to-watch “Thursday Night Football” games, but at least those guys are getting a payday for their backbreaking work.

All of it, at the end of the day, is about money.

The networks want live football to put on the air during weeknights.

The conferences are more than happy to get in bed with the networks because it brings them giant bags with dollar signs printed on them and brand it with words such as “exposure” and hashtags such as “#MACtion.”

Sure, there is something to be said about the exposure that being on ESPN’s networks brings. However, we’ve seen what it’s done to stadium attendance. All that is worrisome, but it’s much less sinister than putting in harm’s way the athletes who earn those TV contracts.

There is more and more information coming out about the dangers of concussions, so we no longer can stick our heads in the sand. Playing two games in five days is dangerous.

A lot of the attention is on concussions and the effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in the NFL – and rightfully so – but let the story of Penn offensive lineman Owen Thomas be a warning on why this is such a horrible idea at the

collegiate level, too.

A popular lineman whose friends said had no history of depression, Thomas ended up hanging himself in 2010, and it was later discovered he had CTE. When most people watch college football, they see the big injuries that take players out of the game, but mostly are entranced by the touchdowns, the highlight-reel catches and perfectly delivered passes. They don’t see the players limping to the bus from the locker room after the game.

Playing two football games in five days is a bad idea no matter what level, but especially in the violent world of Division I football. However, people will tune in and the networks will keep cutting checks to the conferences, which will spread the money around to the schools.

As far as the athletes, they’ll get to take an ice bath before they have to limp their way to class.

Unless they have a game that weekday.

Remember, college football players are students first and athletes second.

Scratch that.

They’re a way for colleges, conferences and TV networks to make money first, then they’re athletes, then students.

On Wednesday, the Mid-American Conference announced the schedules for all of its football teams, and four of them – including Northern Illinois – will have two games in five days at one point.

The Huskies will travel to Bowling Green on Oct. 21 in the final Saturday game of the regular season.

Then on Oct. 26, they will host Eastern Michigan.

Since NIU started playing midweek games in 2004, the Huskies traditionally have been given a nice buffer between the last Saturday game and the first weeknight contest. In 2009, they played Akron (2710 win) on a Saturday and Eastern Michigan (50-6 win) on the following Thursday, but both games were at Huskie Stadium.

This coming season, the Huskies will travel to Bowling Green on that

‘Happy Man’

Thomas Rhett and friends bring sold-out show to DeKalb

news@daily-chronicle.com Country superstar Thomas Rhett wasn’t sure at first if he should headline his own tour.

But the decision to hit the road on his own paid off for Rhett, as almost every show on the “Home Team Tour” is sold out, including Friday’s concert at Northern Illinois University’s Convocation Center.

“It just feels amazing, just really good when you take that leap from opener to headliner.

You hope you’ve done enough to pack areas,” Rhett said. “It’s a risk, but I think we made the right choice to do it. We got out there, we’re rocking it and look forward to every show.”

Rhett catapulted to superstar status after a string of No. 1 hits, including “Die a Happy Man,” which was one of the biggest selling country songs of 2016. Some of his other No. 1 songs include “Star of the Show,” “Crash and Burn,” and “T-Shirt.”

While songs from “Tangled Up,” his platinum-certified second album, will be prominently featured in the set list, he said fans can expect plenty of hits from his debut record, “It Goes Like This.”

“We’re doing a great acoustic set where we go out into the crowd and play some of the older songs,” he said. “I need to go out in the crowd because I feel too disconnected when I just stand on stage. My fans are such a big influence on me.”

The DeKalb concert is one of the first stops on the tour, and Rhett said he’s “pumped” for the show. Fans should be ready for a high-energy party from the opening note of the first act to his final encore, Rhett said.

“We’ve never worked harder for this show, and we put so much work into the set list,” he said. “We’re doing some different arrangements of some songs to give fans a fresh perspective.

The intro is my favorite because

it’s the first time I’ve opened with a big hit, ‘Crash and Burn.’

It’s a blast from start to finish.”

Rhett, whose father Rhett Akins is one of the most sought-after country music songwriters, grew up in the music business and said while he loves country, he’s influenced by many other musical genres.

“My dad has a ton of influence on me, and we wrote ‘Star of the Show’ together. He’s even come out and performed with me a few times,” he said.

“My music is all over the place because I’m a massive fan of so many other genres. So I take what I love from those and make my own brand of country music. The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and the Beatles are some of my all-time favorite bands.”

Mega-stardom isn’t the only way Rhett’s life is changing. His wife, Lauren, is pregnant and the couple is in the process of adopting a child from overseas.

He said he never thought he’d be talking about himself as a headliner, but is trying to “enjoy the ride.”

“To be talking about this doesn’t feel right. Last year was so completely life-altering with the success of ‘Die a Happy Man,’ my life did a 180,” he said with a laugh. “And my life is about to change drastically [with the baby and the adoption]. I’m trying to just sit back and enjoy this. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to headline a tour.”

Rhett is bringing some of country music’s biggest up-and-coming artists along with him. Russell Dickerson, Ryan Hurd and Kelsea Ballerini, who was recently named iHeartRadio’s Best New Country Artist, round out the bill.

Nashville native Dickerson, fresh off his own headlining tour, will open the show along with

Hurd. Dickerson’s first single, “Yours,” is quickly rising up country music’s charts, landing at No. 2 on iTunes Country. He said the tour has been “mind-blowing” so far because the fans know his music and are singing along with him.

“It’s so cool to have people there who are there to see us,” he said. “I’m so excited to play in DeKalb. It’s going to be amazing. Thomas is one of the top country artists and it’s gratifying to me to know that I’m taking steps in the right direction when a guy with huge success recognizes what I’m doing and believes in me.

He personally asked me to join the tour.”

The “Home Team Tour” kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday at the NIU Convocation Center, 1525 W. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb.

‘Sleeping Beauty’ coming to the Egyptian Theatre DAILY CHRONICLE The Beth Fowler Dance Company of Genoa and St. Charles will present “The Sleeping Beauty” at DeKalb’s Egyptian Theatre on March 18 and 19.

The ballet based on a classic fairy tale is a masterpiece of dance drama created in the 19th century through a collaboration of ballet master Marius Petipa and Russian composer Peter Tchaikovsky. The ballet is now seen and heard throughout the world, delighting young and old with the magic and wonder of the young princess who slept 100 years and is awakened by the kiss of a prince.

The local production will offer enjoyment to audiences of all ages with beautiful dancing, costumes and sets as the story of Sleeping Beauty comes to life. Every child ticket includes a trip backstage to take a photo and meet Princess Aurora and all her friends.

Company member Hannah Whitten of Genoa will dance the title role as Princess Aurora. She has performed many principal roles for the Beth Fowler Dance Company, most recently as the Sugar Plum Fairy in this season’s “The Nutcracker.”

Joining the company again is alum Wade Tischhauser of Chicago, who will perform as Prince Florimundo.

This concert is sponsored by the band to honor the memory of Thomas Sims of DeKalb, who was a professor of biological sciences at NIU. He was involved in many community organizations and played an active role in improving community life in DeKalb. Sims played French horn in the band for about 10 years. He also played in the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra, DeKalb Municipal Band and Kishwaukee Brass Quintet. He was well versed in sailing, downhill skiing and cooking, and was known as a researcher in the area of the petunia genome and its DNA. The concert will open with “Music

Makers” by Alfred Reed, which represents dreamers of dreams, movers and shakers of the world forever.

“Mountain Thyme,” by Samuel R. Hazo, is a beautifully emotional musical memorial. The “Klezmer Dances” by Stephen Bulla is a very different performance experience.

The “Two Left Feet” by Leroy Anderson is a wacky, fast polka that will close out the first part of the concert.

The second part of the concert will feature “Incidental Suite” by Claude Smith. Rossano Galante’s “Redemption” has melodic lines that capture a sense of euphoria. The concert will close with “Pirates of the Caribbean,”

by Klaus Badelt, which features selections from the “Curse of the Black Pearl” soundtrack.

Local stores to participate in Vintage Shop Hop DAILY CHRONICLE Shoppers will converge on northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin for the fourth annual Vintage Shop Hop on Friday and Saturday.

More than 300 locally owned vintage shops, antique malls, boutiques, occasional and pop-up shops, barn sales and restaurants in two states are rolling out the red carpet for customers with discounts, giveaways, raffle drawings, demos, ideas on re-purposing old items and more. The shop hop is a self-guided road trip for vintage and antique lovers in the region.

In its fourth year, the Vintage Shop Hop has grown from 180 shops the first year to 314 last year. Event organizer Ann Campos said it could top those numbers this year.

Each shop is required to have an “in store” promotion for the weekend, and many shops go beyond just complimentary coffee and cookies.

Some have designed a map with other area shops indicated. Shoppers will find “pop a balloon” or “spin the wheel” promotions to determine their discounts. There are paint demos, floral design demos, and free gifts just for stopping in. Others have created punch cards or round robin promotions to get people moving around their area.

More than 300 vintage shops, antique malls, boutiques, occasional and pop-up shops, barn sales and restaurants in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin will participate in the fourth annual Vintage Shop Hop on Friday and Saturday.

Travel back to the 1960s in the Stage Coach Players production of “Hairspray,” which opens March 9.

“Hairspray” is based on the film written and directed by John Waters.

The movie starred Harvey Feirstein as Edna Turnblad and Ricci Lake as Tracy Turnblad. Tracy is a plus-sized high-schooler who dreams of dancing on The Corny Collins Show, (an American Bandstand-type show).

She is turned down because of her size and her views on integration.

Tracy stumbles onto new friends in detention and befriends Seaweed and his African American family. Tracy and her mother learn, through their friendship with Seaweed and his family, to appreciate themselves.

“Hairspray,” with artistic direction by Jan Kuntz and music direc-

tion by John Feken, will run March 9 through 12 and 16 through 19 at Stage Coach Theatre, 126 S. Fifth St. in DeKalb. Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Sundays.

Performing in “Hairspray” as Tracy Turnblad will be Riley Powers, who recently performed at Sycamore High School in “Shrek” as the Dragon. Merri Bork, also a SHS student, will be Penny, her best friend. Dan Hyde, a Stage Coach veteran, will play Edna Turnblad, and Frank Judd, also a Stage Coach veteran will be Wilbur Turnblad. Brian Fowler will perform as Link Larkin. Monique Smith will be Motormouth Maybelle, and her son, AJ Smith, will play her son, Seaweed. 28 Prevent nosebleeds in cold, dry climates Dear Doctor: We just moved from Miami to northern Michigan, and even though my daily routine hasn’t changed and I’m not on any new medications, I have begun to get a nosebleed every few weeks. Should I be worried?’

Dear Reader: If you had reported the onset of nosebleeds on a daily or even biweekly basis, then we would be having a different discussion.

But you have recently moved from a climate that is warm and moist to one that, in winter, is cold and dry, and this can cause quite a bit of stress to delicate nasal tissues. Add in the effects of the heaters and furnaces that are pumping hot, dry air into homes and offices, and you’ve set the stage for the occasional nosebleed.

Why? A look at the inner workings of the nose will help explain.

Our noses have two main jobs. They not only serve as airways that filter, moisten, and either warm or cool the air we breathe, they are also our scent organs.

Behind the visible portion of the nose that draws in air lies a wonderfully complex series of chambers and canals known as the sinus cavities. These are covered with a specialized lining called the mucosa, which includes numerous mucus glands that keep all the inner surfaces moist.

When cold or dry air causes the nasal membranes to dry out enough that they crack, the result is a nosebleed. This is most common in areas where winters are cold or summers are hot and dry. Because nasal membranes gradually become less robust over time, older adults can be more susceptible to nosebleeds than those who are younger. Individuals on blood-thinning drugs are also at greater risk.

Fortunately, there are a few steps you

When you need to blow your nose to clear it of mucus, do so gently. Instead of abruptly trumpeting full force into a tissue, use the minimum amount of gradual pressure needed to clear your nasal passages.

Using a humidifier, particularly in the bedroom as you sleep, gives your mucus membrane a boost.

Just be sure to stay vigilant about keeping the humidifier clean, as moist air is basically a welcome mat for fungus.

A dab of a water-based ointment inside each nostril will also help to keep things lubricated.

If you do get another nosebleed, don’t panic.

Lean forward (if you lean back, you wind up swallowing blood) and lightly pinch your nostrils together near the bridge of your nose.

This puts pressure on the vessel that’s bleeding and the flow should stop. Give it five minutes and then gently release.

If your nose is still bleeding, pinch again and go for another five minutes. In most cases, bleeding will stop within 10 to 15 minutes.

If your nose is still bleeding after 20 minutes, it’s time to see a doctor.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY have seen letters in your column Jeanne from parents who Phillips want to ensure their children’s and teenagers’ safety when visiting their friends’ homes. A question parents need to ask the hosting parents is what their drug and alcohol policy is. We wrongly assumed (and trusted) that our daughter’s friends’ parents did not facilitate access to alcohol or drugs to minors. We realized – too late – that from the time she was 15, our daughter had access to unmonitored alcohol and was sometimes encouraged to consume it in these homes. Many parents think it’s OK if teens drink alcohol under supervision, as long as the parents are there and they have the car keys. They rationalize the teens are going to do it anyway, so why not under supervision? What these parents don’t consider is a teen who may have a genetic predisposition to addiction may have a switch turned on in his or her developing brain. Our daughter’s addiction became a long, difficult struggle, which led to the untimely death of our smart and talented daughter at age 24. – Grieving Mom in Reno Dear Grieving Mom: I am sorry for the tragic loss of your daughter. In most states, providing alcohol to minors is against the law, not only for public safety, but also for the reason you stated.

Years ago, I spoke with a gentleman who was active with the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD), when he repeated something he’d heard at an AA meeting. He said the subject being discussed at the meeting was what it felt like having that “very first drink.”

The other day, one of my students said to me, “You can visualize where the cards are. I find that impossible to do.”

It is true -- mentally seeing the cards in an opponent’s hand makes it easier to visualize how the play will proceed. In this deal, it was not hard for South to see where the missing honor cards lay, but East could have set a small trap for declarer.

South was in three no-trump.

How should he have played after West led the spade six?

Declarer began with seven top tricks: one spade, two hearts, one diamond and three clubs. Given that only 12 high-card points were missing -- you did count those, didn’t you? -the heart finesse was clearly winning.

If a second diamond winner could be found, perhaps by endplaying East, then the contract would succeed.

South ducked the first spade trick and took the second, seeing that West began with a doubleton. Declarer cashed his three club winners, and East discarded the diamond seven. Then, after taking three heart tricks with the aid of the finesse, South led his last spade. East took three winners in the suit, but at Trick 12 had to lead away from the diamond king-jack into dummy’s acequeen.

East should have thrown the diamond jack, not the seven, trying to look like someone who began with 5-4-2-2 distribution. It probably wouldn’t have worked, but it was worth a try.
