Meijer wants to build a store in Sycamore

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Big-box retailer Meijer wants to a build a store in Sycamore.

The Grand Rapids, Michigan-based retailer plans to buy an 18-acre parcel that is part of the proposed Sycamore Crossings development at the northwest corner of DeKalb Avenue and Peace Road.

Meijer is asking the city for a special-use permit for the development of a store and gas station. A public hearing on the request is set for 7 p.m. March 13 at the Sycamore Municipal Building, 308 W. State St. City Manager Brian Gregory said the company is going through the due diligence pro-

cess toward gaining approval for the development.

The city’s Planning Commission would consider the proposal, possibly at its March 13 meeting, before it went for the City Council for final approval. Planning Commission Chairman Bill Davey said he couldn’t comment on the proposal Tuesday because he hadn’t seen it. However, he said that the commission, generally, looks for “what is in the best interest of the city of Sycamore and its residents.”

Meijer, which is privately owned, operates 230 supercenters and grocery stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.

The city annexed the land for Sycamore Crossings in 2006.

1 scoop or 2? Raw cookie dough is the latest food fad

NEW YORK – Cookie dough is having its Cronut moment.

People have been standing in line for up to three hours at a month-old New York City shop that sells scoops of raw dough in a cup or a cone like ice cream.

The sweet treat has become the latest food fad to generate buzz and long lines on the sidewalk, following the Magnolia Bakery cupcake popularized by “Sex and the City” and the Cronut, the croissant-doughnut mashup that made pastry chef Dominique Ansel’s Manhattan bakery a phenomenon among foodies and tourists and ultimately inspired mass-produced knockoffs.

Kristen Tomlan, the 28-year-old founder of DO Cookie Dough Confections, said she’s selling 1,500 pounds of cookie dough a day at her Greenwich Village storefront and hopes to expand both in New York and online.

“It’s really cookie dough gone wild,” said Tomlan, who grew up in St. Louis and has a background in design and branding.

The name of the business, DO, is pronounced “dough” and rendered with a line over the O indicating a long vowel sound.

About 30 people were lined up across the street when the shop opened at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Nancy Lerman, who works nearby, said she’s been twice before and tried most of the flavors, which include chocolate chip, red velvet and peanut butter snickerdoodle.

Why eat raw dough instead of a cookie?

“I just think it’s yummier,” Lerman said. “I don’t eat a lot of cookies, but I would eat cookie dough.”

New York University student Alex Day joined the line in hopes of sampling the dough for the first time. Day said she’s always loved raw dough and figured the people lining up outside DO must be on to something.

“I’m sure it’ll be really good if people are waiting this long for it,” she said.

District 428 board candidates field questions at forum

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Nine out of the 10 candidates for the DeKalb School District 428 board made their cases to win one of three open seats during a forum hosted Tuesday by the League of Women Voters.

The forum was held at the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St. Candidates were divided into two sets of five based on ballot order so the same questions wouldn’t have to be answered 10 times.

C. Scott (Clyde) Campbell, Shatoya Black, Twangie Smith and current President Victoria Newport were first to be questioned. Sean Johnson was meant to be the fifth member, but he was not in attendance.

The first group of candidates were asked whether they supported the board’s approach to finding a new school superintendent after a settlement agreement the board reached with Superintendent Doug Moeller, who will be resigning at the end of April.

After hearing presentations from three firms during a special meeting earlier this month, the board selected the Illinois Association of School Boards to aid in the superintendent search.

Campbell said he supported the approach the board took in selecting a firm, but it would be within the best interest of the district to hold any decision on appointing a new superintendent until after the election.

Black and Smith both said the board should look at the way decision-making was done in the past to see what works well and what does not.

Newport said the board’s decision to go with the Illinois Association of School Boards was motivated by being more transparent with the public on the decision-making process.

The firm will be interviewing staff members to determine characteristics desired in the new superintendent and also will be seeking community input on questions it should ask potential candidates.

When asked how to improve the test scores of students, Smith said there should be surveys and discussions with parents and students to find out what their problems are.

Newport said that partnerships with Northern Illinois University need to be expanded across all schools, as some aren’t receiving equal treatment from the university. She also brought up new reading and math programs to assess students.

Campbell said NIU could aid students by offering counseling in niche areas such as social work to enhance the performance of less-privileged students.

Black said there are cultural barriers that are hindering students from succeeding that need to be recognized, and it requires action to identify and correct these problems.

Williams were then given an opportunity to answer questions on property taxes and how to deal with the $108 million debt incurred from a series of construction projects, including the new DeKalb High School.

Williams and Hernandez both agreed that property taxes would not be decreasing anytime soon and the district must work diligently to avoid any tax increases.

Harned said the community should be prepared to advocate for tax changes on a state level to ease any type of overreliance on property taxes for school funding.

Hallgren said one approach he would push for is to work with the city to open lines of communication with NIU, parent-teacher groups and other organizations to work on how to keep property taxes as low as possible.

While not mentioning any partic-

ular candidate, Olson said it also was important to vote for a mayoral candidate who could bring new businesses into town, which could affect the district’s budget.

Hernandez said the bond debt should be refinanced, but there must be multiple approaches, which will require collaboration.

Harned recommended the district hold a special session to educate the candidates on the realities faced in any restructuring of the bond debt.

Hallgren and Olson both said a bond extension would be a good choice, with Olson adding that there would be no way around it without a significant tax increase.

Williams said the bond debt will require further research, but the board has done a good job of working toward alternative scenarios in paying back the debt.

Ground broken on recreation campus

SYCAMORE – Sycamore Park District leaders moved the first piles of dirt Tuesday on their $13 million series of projects to expand and improve the district’s recreational spaces.

About 30 people including park and city officials, Leaf a Legacy contributors and community members were in attendance at the site of the 25-acre recreation campus across from the Sports Complex on Airport Road.

“We already have a lot of fun activity across the road,” Park District Executive Director Dan Gibble said.

“We think this is going to become the focal point for recreation in Sycamore and for a lot of people perhaps not from Sycamore.”

Over the next 10 to 12 months, construction will begin on a 22,400-squarefoot community center, the Brian Bemis Family Dog Park, a splash pad designed by Vortex Aquatic Structures International, the Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital Sled Hill, and an outdoor amphitheater and patio.

The features are part of the district’s Action 2020 plans, for which the Sycamore Park Board approved the concept in December 2013.

Voters in November 2014 approved a property-tax rate increase referendum to carry out the project with $9 million in property taxes. The rest of the funds are set to come from $3 million in grants and $1 million from the Leaf a Legacy campaign.

Park board Vice President Michelle Schulz said the district is about $100,000 away from its fundraising goal for Leaf a Legacy, and board members are hoping to reach $1 million in March.

“The $200, the $50, the $25, the $10 donations are what makes this possible,” she said. “This community cares unlike any other community you’d ever find, and we’re so grateful for all of those donations.”

Schulz said Ringland-Johnson Construction would set up a webcam on site so that people can view the construction on the district’s website.

Gibble said the community center is scheduled to be complete and open to the public in about a year, with the splash pad being ready in summer 2018. He said the dog park and sled hill would take an additional year, because the turf on both features will need to settle.

Sycamore Park District executive director Brent Johnson, president and CEO of Ringland-Johnson Construction, said the company, based in Cherry Valley, has taken on many local projects, with this one expected to create an average of 50 construction jobs.

Born: November 14, 1932; in DeKalb, IL Died: February 26, 2017; in Sycamore, IL E. Janette Jones, age 84, of Sycamore, passed away peacefully at her home with her loving family by her side on Sunday, February 26, 2017.

Janette was a lifelong resident of DeKalb County. She was born November 14, 1932 in DeKalb, the daughter of R. Emmet and Nannie (Green) Riley Her father died early in her life and she was raised by Henry W. Dietz III, who married Nan in 1938. She graduated from Sycamore High School in 1950, where her student activities included flag twirling. She married Gordon Jones of Clare on June 14, 1952, and they started a long and successful farming life together.

Janette loved living on the farm and was an essential part of the family farming operation.

At the same time, she was a devoted mother to four children. Janette and Gordon continually made many close and wonderful friends, both in the farming community and in town.

They had a very busy social life, often centered around activities such as card games or sports (Sycamore High, Fighting Illini, etc.).

This continued even after they retired from farming and moved to Sycamore in 1996.

Janette enjoyed gardening, traveling, and playing golf, at both local courses and in Marco Island and Naples, Florida, where she wintered for many years. After Gordon passed away in 2002, Janette was later very fortunate to find a new golfing and life partner in Dee Palmer of DeKalb. Always a music lover, she became a supporter and faithful attendee of concerts by Dee’s DeKalb Municipal Band at Hopkins Park. Janette had an unwavering faith in God and was a lifelong active member of Salem Lutheran Church in Sycamore.

She is survived by her four children, Colleen (Dr. Robert Rivers) of Batavia, Robin of Naperville, Kelly (Susan) of Downers Grove, and Tracy (Beth) of Clare; eight grandchildren, Alex and Charles Konarski, Skylar Bergl, Sean and Alison Jones, and Kristen, Katherine, and Kortney Jones; siblings, Henry “Bud” (Janet) Dietz IV and Carole Polvado; and many other dear relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Charles Edward Dietz; her husband, Gordon; and her dear friend and partner, Dee Palmer.

David W. Levinson, Ph.D., age 92, of DeKalb, IL, died on Monday, February 27, 2017 in the DeKalb Area Retirement Center-Oakcrest in DeKalb.

Born on February 24, 1925 in Chicago, IL, he was the son of Louis and Ethel (Paul) Levinson.

David was married to the former, Betty Sachnoff for 68 years and together they raised three children, Louis, Joseph, and Jeanne Bonilla. David was a Professor for many years teaching Metallurgical Engineering at UIC, and at the University of Arizona.

He served in the United States Navy during WW II. There will be no formal services, and cremation will be handled by the Finch Crematory.

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Elleson’s Bakery employee Bonnie Boan said Fat Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras, is almost like Christmas in the store because of the high demand for paczkis, a deepfried Polish pastry.

About 80 preorders for these traditional doughnutlike treats were placed, one of which was for 120. By the time doors opened at 5:30 a.m. at 344 W. State St. in Sycamore, the bakery was packed with eager customers.

Business continued through the morning. Selling paczkis for $1.25 apiece, Boan said that they were able to earn $500 in sales from 11 a.m. to noon.

The pastries came with numerous fillings, such as strawberry, lemon, orange creme, key lime, pineapple and coconut custard.

Methodist Church, ordered 100 paczkis in the store as part of the Hungry Huskies program put on by the Wesley Foundation of Northern Illinois University.

Lee said her goal was to educate children about Fat Tuesday, which is the last day before the beginning of Lent in Christian tradition.

The Neighborhood Bakery at 2205 Pleasant St. in DeKalb had similar success when they opened their doors at 7 a.m.

Owner Kathy Henner said she had preorders for roughly 2,000 individual paczkis and had to run out for about 350 more when purchases exceeded her estimates.

“We encourage preorders, because next year we expect to have a lot more,” Henner said.

Henner added that her bakery’s paczkis are her husband John’s recipe and made using a scratch mix. The blackberry filling and cream cheese icing are also made by the Henners.

Paczkis deliver long lines on Fat Tuesday

SYCAMORE – After parents and teachers raised concerns at a public hearing Tuesday, the Sycamore School District 427 board voted unanimously in favor of eliminating about 40 positions throughout the district.

Board members Diane Tyrrell and Donald Clayberg were absent.

Eight teachers and 20 full- and part-time support staff will lose their jobs, while other positions will be reduced through attrition, district officials said. The district will take action on teacher positions up for elimination March 11, and then on support staff spots April 14.

Board President Jim Dombek said the district would be looking to hire some staff members back through grants, but the board needed to take action on the reductions because the level of funding for those grants is uncertain.

Annie Miller, a parent and Sycamore Middle School teacher, teared up as she addressed the board and said the district should seek other means of financial assistance before cutting more teachers and staff.

“I don’t know how we’re going to do any more with any less; it is only affecting our kids,” she said. “I feel like we’re setting them up for failure, and it makes me sad.”

Coni Stracner, a teacher at Sycamore Middle School, said she was concerned about the future of the school’s library, as a librarian position was among those identified for elimination.

She said eliminating a position of a certified librarian would “only be detrimental to the needs of faculty and students.”

“A certified librarian is a necessity to maintain the academic integrity of the middle school library,” Stracner said.

Parent Natalie Nelson said eliminating positions such as counselors and special-education teachers and aides would disproportionately affect the students who need the most services, such as her fourth-grade son with autism and ADHD. “There are times when my son’s special-education teacher is not available because they’re sharing her with the other school,” Nelson said. “This kid is melting down, and there’s nobody there who is assigned to help.”

Kelly Meyer, a nurse for Sycamore schools, questioned why the district was not considering cuts to sports programs and suggested putting together a task force to look at alternative ways to reduce spending in the future.

“There’s got to be something else,” she said. “Our state is a mess, and I don’t think putting it on the backs of our most important asset, our teachers, is fair.”

Dombek said the district does not have as many tools as other governmental units for raising revenue.

“Our hands are somewhat tied in that the only way we have to raise revenue is property taxes, and our property taxes are capped,” he said.

The personnel cuts are part of the district’s three-year plan to reach a balanced budget by the end of the 2017-18 school year and reduce deficit spending, which will require a $2.3 million reduction next year.

This school year, the district cut $2.8 million in spending after a $1.1 million reduction in the 2015-16 school year.

Governor simplifies program to hire temporary workers

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration said Tuesday that it has made it simpler to round up temporary workers in case the state’s major public-employee union strikes, a move the union derided as illegal intimidation.

The governor’s office said the state’s online jobs website now allows applicants to submit basic work-interest information, which will allow the administration to build a network of standbys if members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union go on strike. The union is locked in a contract dispute with the first-term Republican governor.

“We genuinely hope AFSCME leadership will choose not to strike against taxpayers,” Rauner attorney Dennis Murashko said in a statement. “However, we must be prepared to continue government operations and provide services that citizens deserve and expect.”

Senate makes progress on Rauner’s ‘grand bargain’

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Senate has moved forward on pieces of a budget compromise. But the tough votes are scheduled for Wednesday.

The Senate approved noncontentious parts of what’s called the “grand bargain” on Tuesday.

It’s an effort to find a breakthrough on a two-year stalemate between Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Legislature. The Republican governor won’t agree to a tax increase to tackle a multibillion-dollar deficit without regulatory changes to strengthen business and weaken unions.

Democrats control the Senate and provided most of the votes Tuesday to approve plans to streamline state purchasing, expand casino gambling and more.

Cardinal takes stand on immigration enforcement

CHICAGO – The Roman Catholic archdiocese in Chicago told its schools this week not to let federal immigration agents into their buildings without a warrant, in step with guidance given to hundreds of Chicago public schools last week in response to President Donald Trump’s efforts to crack down on illegal immigration.

Marking what may be the first such guidance issued by a Roman Catholic church leader, Cardinal Blase Cupich sent the directive in a letter Monday to principals of more than 200 schools and other officials in the nation’s third-largest archdiocese.

He said that if immigration agents show up without a warrant, to “tell them politely they cannot come on the premises, ask them for their contact information and tell them to contact the (archdiocese) Office

Emergency operations activated as tornadoes hit

OTTAWA – Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner activated the state’s emergency operations center as local officials reported damage from tornadoes spawned by a late-winter storm system.

Officials said activation of the State Emergency Operations Center will ensure state agencies are in place to give assistance to those affected by Tuesday’s storms.

AFSCME and Rauner have been unable for two years to agree on a contract to replace one that expired in June 2015.

The governor demands a wage freeze because of the budget crisis, along with increased employee contributions toward health care that the union calls untenable.

Rauner also wants to allow overtime pay after a 40-hour workweek, not 37.5 hours.

The union conceded to a four-year wage freeze in January, but neither it nor the strike-authorization vote enticed Rauner to return to bargaining, which he abandoned a year ago.

“Instead of trying to intimidate workers with illegal threats, Bruce Rauner should simply do his job: Negotiate with us toward a compromise that’s fair to all,” AFSCME spokesman Anders Lindall said in a statement Tuesday.

A state labor board ruled last fall that negotiations had reached “impasse,” meaning Rauner was free to implement contract terms as he saw fit and the union could strike if it disagreed.

State Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Patti Thompson said one person was killed by an uprooted tree.

Minor injuries also were reported at the nursing home, but Thompson said the number of those hurt in the twisters was not known.

Officials: State wasn’t told suspect should be held

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Corrections said a man accused in a 2012 Chicago expressway killing was released on parole in an unrelated case because the department wasn’t informed he should be held.

The Department of Corrections released Garrett Glover on Friday after he was sentenced Thursday to four years in prison for an attempted armed robbery in 2014.

Glover had been in custody since 2014.

Glover was supposed to be returned to the custody of the Cook County sheriff’s department, but the Department of Corrections says it didn’t get documentation from Cook County saying he should be held.

WASHINGTON – A federal judge said Tuesday that he’ll decide within a week whether to temporarily halt construction of the final section of the Dakota Access pipeline over claims that it violates the religious rights of two Indian tribes.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg told lawyers at a hearing that he wants to issue a ruling before oil begins flowing in the pipeline, which could be weeks away.

Boasberg is considering a request by the Standing Rock and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes to order the Army Corps of Engineers to withdraw permission to lay pipe under Lake Oahe in North Dakota.

The pipeline has prompted months of protests and hundreds of arrests.

Russia, China veto new U.N. sanctions on Syria

UNITED NATIONS – Russia and China on Tuesday vetoed new U.N. sanctions on Syria, and the U.S. ambassador accused both countries of refusing to hold President Bashar Assad’s regime accountable for the use of chemical weapons.

“They put their friends in the Assad regime ahead of our global security,” new American envoy Nikki Haley told the U.N. Security Council after the vote. “They turned away from defenseless men, women and children who died gasping for breath when Assad’s forces dropped their

recently joined France and Britain in sponsoring the resolution, and Haley minced no words in denouncing the “outrageous and indefensible choice” that Russia and China made on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump had warm words for Russian President Vladimir Putin while campaigning, but Haley has now criticized Russia over its annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula as well as Syria.

Trump signs executive order on black colleges

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday aimed at signaling his commitment to historically black colleges and universities, saying that those schools will be “an absolute priority for this White House.”

HBCU presidents are hoping Congress will bolster Trump’s actions to strengthen the schools with increased funding in the upcoming federal budget. They are calling for $25 billion for infrastructure, college readiness, financial aid and other priorities.

Under President Barack Obama’s administration, historically black colleges and universities received $4 billion over seven years.

“The next step is the budget. You cannot have mission without money,” Thurgood Marshall College Fund President Johnny Taylor said after the signing ceremony.

Trump: ‘Time to join forces’ to fix America

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Heralding a “new chapter of American greatness,” President Donald Trump stood before Congress for the first time Tuesday night and issued a broad call for overhauling the nation’s health care system, significantly boosting military spending and plunging $1 trillion into upgrading crumbling infrastructure.

Striking an optimistic tone, Trump declared: “The time for small thinking is over.”

Trump’s address came at a pivotal moment for a new president elected on pledges to swiftly shake up Washington and follow through on the failed promises of career politicians. His opening weeks in office have been consumed by distractions and self-inflicted wounds, including the bungled rollout of a sweeping immigration and refugee executive order that was blocked by the courts.

Trump, who typically relishes flouting political convention, embraced the pomp and tradition of a presidential address to Congress. He stuck largely to his script, made occasional overtures to Democrats and skipped the personal insults he so often hurls at his opponents.

The president was greeted by enthusiastic applause as he entered the House chamber, though it was filled with Democrats who vigorously oppose his policies and many Republicans who never expected him to be elected.

Most Republican lawmakers have rallied around him since the election, hopeful that he will act on the domestic priorities they saw blocked during President Barack Obama’s eight years in office.

Democrats, now firmly ensconced in the minority, sat silently while Republicans stood and cheered. Some wore blue, pro-health care buttons that read “Protect our care,” and dozens of Democratic women wore white in honor of the suffrage movement.

Trump was vague in his call for tax reform, another Republican priority. He promised “massive tax relief for the middle class” and a reduction in corporate tax

rates, but glossed over how he would offset the cuts.

The president also urged Congress to pass a $1 trillion infrastructure package financed through both public and private capital.

“The time has come for a new program of national rebuilding,” he said.

Trump sent unexpectedly mixed messages on immigration, one of his signature campaign issues. He pledged to vigorously target people living in the U.S. illegally who “threaten our communities and prey on our citizens.” But he told news anchors before his speech that he was open to legislation that could provide a pathway to legal status, and he told Congress he believed “real and positive immigration reform is possible.”

First lady Melania Trump sat with special guests who were on hand to amplify the president’s agenda, including the family members of people killed by immigrants living in the U.S. illegally. The widow of former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia also sat alongside Mrs. Trump, a reminder of the president’s well-received nomination of federal appeals court Judge Neil Gorsuch to fill Scalia’s seat.

Slow down on deportations With an executive order, President Donald Trump has launched what aims to be a massive deportation of people who are living in the United States illegally. This raises a number of questions, including: • Has the order been thought through any better than the recent one that attempted to stop the flow of refugees from seven Middle Eastern and African nations?

• Does the government possess anywhere near the resources to carry out such a plan?

• Has the administration sought advice and buyin from all those who will be tasked with carrying out the order?

• Has the president consulted with Congress to make this part of a larger strategy for dealing with illegal immigration?

• Has the administration considered the economic impact of deporting millions of productively employed workers?

• Is the administration ready for the onslaught of criticism and outrage as the painful human cost of these actions becomes apparent?

• Why the rush?

There are an estimated 11.1 million unauthorized immigrants in the United States, down from a record high of 12.2 million in 2007. They make up only 3.5 percent of the nation’s population and 5 percent of its workforce. As of 2014, 52 percent were from Mexico, with the remainder from Asia and Central and South America.

An estimated 8 million of these immigrants have jobs, and while many are paid under the table and thus evade taxes, many also use fake Social Security numbers to procure employment and, as a result, they do pay taxes. In 2010, it was estimated these immigrants paid $13 billion in Social Security taxes and more than $10 billion in income taxes.

Despite the common view immigrants help themselves to the social safety net, only legal immigrants are eligible for welfare, food stamps and Medicaid.

However, children of unauthorized immigrants do attend the nation’s schools and immigrants also receive police, fire and emergency medical services.

About two-thirds of unauthorized immigrants have lived in the U.S. for at least 10 years.

Newly elected presidents naturally want to speedily address the promises that they made during their election campaigns, but no reasonable person expects that every promise will be fulfilled instantaneously. To confer with Congress on a comprehensive immigration proposal combining executive and legislative actions would make it more likely the resulting policy has been vetted, that resources have been marshaled to carry it out and that it is humane.

Trump losing long-term fight in Iraq Iraqi government forces last week launched a crucial campaign to retake the western side of Mosul, the Islamic State’s largest remaining urban stronghold. U.S. planes and special forces were providing critical close-up support for a battle that commanders believe could drag on for months.

Victory is not assured and the humanitarian cost, which Iraqi forces managed to minimize in capturing the eastern side of the city, could steeply rise. Yet the biggest challenge looms beyond the immediate battle: whether Mosul and other Sunni-populated areas of Iraq can be stabilized once the jihadists are driven out.

Unfortunately, in his first weeks in office President Donald Trump has significantly worsened the chances for success.

The rise of the Islamic State was facilitated by sectarian tensions among Iraq’s majority Shiite and minority Sunni and Kurdish populations, and in particular by the discrimination against Sunnis by a Shiite-led Baghdad government backed by Iran. After the fall of Mosul in 2014 the Obama administration helped to engineer the removal of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who fomented the sectarianism, and his replacement by the more moderate Haider al-Abadi, who

pledged to build a more inclusive regime. Abadi’s good intentions have mostly been thwarted by sectarian hard-liners, including Iranian-controlled Shiite militia groups.

Consequently, the military offensive to recapture Mosul has gone ahead without accompanying political steps that might strengthen moderate Sunni leaders against militants who will seek to perpetuate an insurgency against the Baghdad government.

A report this month from the Institute for Study of War warned, “Early indicators suggest that a post-ISIS Sunni insurgency may be forming in Iraq and al Qaeda is trying to gain traction within it.”

It said, “the U.S.-backed Coalition has been focused only on eliminating ISIS, not other insurgent groups or the conditions that grow them.”

While the Obama administration deserves blame for sidestepping Iraq’s political challenges, Trump has quickly exacerbated the trouble. His repeated suggestions that the United States might seize Iraq’s oil fields have alienated forces across the political spectrum, notwithstading a disavowal by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis. Worse, his inclusion of Iraq on a list of majority-Muslim nations from which visitors

and immigrants would be banned has prompted Abadi’s opponents to demand that Americans – including the more than 5,000 U.S. troops now operating against the Islamic State – be expelled from the country.

Abadi managed to resist a parliamentary resolution to that effect after that ban was issued.

But if Iraq remains on the list of banned nations in a revised order the White House said it is preparing, he could face another political rebellion that could cause his government to collapse. Tehran’s Shiite militias could push to replace U.S. forces in the fight for Mosul; or more likely, Iran’s clients could demand that all American forces leave Iraq immediately after the battle. That would virtually ensure the predominance of sectarian elements among both Shiites and Sunnis and open the door to another resurgence by al-Qaida or other jihadists.

Mattis discounted that risk during a visit to Baghdad last Monday, saying, “I imagine we’ll be in this fight for a while and we’ll stand by each other.”

A reasonable Iraqi might ask: “Why should a U.S. administration that bans all Iraqis from setting foot on American soil be regarded as a worthy partner?”

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

VIEWS Leonard Pitts George Zimmerman was the first to make that reduction when he stalked Trayvon through a gated community despite a police dispatcher advising him to stay with his car. Then the police did it, testing the shooting victim for drugs and alcohol while telling his killer to “go home and get some rest.” Then the jury did it when they set Zimmerman free.

Much of America did it, too. One reader wrote – without a shred of evidence – that Trayvon was “casing” houses when he was shot. This was a boy walking back from 7-Eleven to watch a basketball game at his father’s girlfriend’s house.

Another person, upset that family photos made Trayvon look too young and, well ... innocent, forwarded a chain email showing a tough-looking man, with beard and mustache,

tats on his hands and face, insisting, “This is the real Trayvon.” It was actually the real Jayceon “The Game” Taylor, a then-32-year-old rapper.

Supplied with a death scene image of Trayvon – darker skin than Taylor, younger, slimmer, no facial hair, no visible tats – the woman was unmoved. “They’re both Trayvon,” she insisted.

Because Trayvon could not, at all costs, be innocent. The very idea was a threat.

So people embraced absurdities.

Like a 140-pound boy jumping a man 12 years older and 50 pounds heavier.

Such as the boy hitting the man 25 or 30 times and bashing his head against concrete, although Zimmerman’s “injuries” amounted to a bloody nose and scratches on the back of his head that needed no stitches. Such as Trayvon, shot point blank in the heart, dying like a villain in some 1950s Western, groaning, “You got me.”

They seized upon his suspension from school. For them, it proved not that he was an ordinary boy who needed – and was receiving – the guidance

of two loving parents. No, it proved he was not, could never be, innocent.

Trayvon was no angel, they would announce triumphantly.

But why did he have to be? And why was there no similar requirement of the killer, who had been arrested once for scuffling with a police officer and had been the subject of a domestic violence restraining order?

The answer is too obvious for speaking.

Five years ago, a black boy was shot for nothing. And many Americans made him a blank screen upon which they projected their racialized stereotypes and fears. They could not allow him to be a harmless child walking home. No, they needed his guilt.

They knew what it proved if Trayvon Martin was innocent.

Namely, that America was anything but.

Trump, chief strategist are out for revenge

The Washington Post reports: Stephen K. Bannon, President Trump’s reclusive chief strategist and the intellectual force behind his nationalist agenda, said Thursday that the new administration is locked in an unending battle against the media and other globalist forces to “deconstruct” an outdated system of governance.

“They’re going to continue to fight,” Bannon said of the media, which he repeatedly described as “the opposition party,” and other forces he sees as standing in the president’s way. “If you think they are giving you your country back without a fight, you are sadly mistaken.”

Atop Trump’s agenda, Bannon said, was the “deconstruction of the administrative state” – meaning a system of taxes, regulations and trade pacts that the president and his advisers believe stymie economic growth and infringe upon one’s sovereignty.

••• For those who doubted Trump-Bannon’s determination to destroy the liberal international order that has kept world war at bay and promoted global prosperity since the

end of World War II, this will come as a rude awakening. Bannon’s simultaneous attack on the media suggests that it is not simply about trade or immigration policy.

From an economic standpoint, Bannon is talking mumbo-jumbo. Protectionism and immigration exclusion retard growth; they do not promote it. We do not lose “sovereignty” when our consumers enjoy a higher standard of living thanks to imported goods.

And in the regulations department, what could be more of a regulatory burden than cutting legal immigration, trying to influence which suppliers to use via a border adjustment tax or bullying companies about where they set up their plants?

This is not about sovereignty; it is about creating an even more powerful government, one that is oblivious to economic reality and ignores the political and economic upheavals that the policies create.

Bannon may very well know that he is peddling junk – crumbs tossed to low-information voters desperate to find a culprit for their economic woes. If he has been listening to U.S. business leaders, allies, informed members of Congress or the Federal Reserve chairman, he must have

figured out how counterproductive his nationalist ideas are. (We’ve tried this before in the 1930s – with poor results.)

And yet the appetite to decimate liberal Western democracies and shred an international system that has maintained relative peace and prosperity is unabated.

The conclusion one is drawn to over and over is that Bannon and Trump are living out a cultural revenge fantasy. Bannon-Trump remain bonded to their base not because of ideology or agenda, but because they desire the downfall of coastal and urban elites (personified by the media), detest the ethnic and racial demographic trends that continue to make the country more diverse and hold fast to various myths and an exaggerated sense of victimhood (e.g. climate change is a hoax, minorities all live in violent and poverty-stricken cities, Christians are “persecuted”).

No wonder the Trump team finds a role model in the anti-Western, authoritarian Russian President Vladimir Putin, who runs a kleptocracy that impoverishes his people, whom he then tries to pacify with grandiose nationalistic ambitions. (They may not have a high-tech industry, but by gosh, the Empire is back!)

When Trump cannot achieve his

aims (e.g. replacing Obamacare with a nonexistent superior system that costs less) or when his rhetoric embroils the country in political and economic conflict, members of his base may notice that their lives are not improving one iota.

Perhaps some will stick to him until the bitter end. In the meantime, an impressive coalition of rationalists from right and left is developing. From both sides of the political perspective we see Americans amassing who understand that globalism is both desirable and irreversible and that democratic norms are worth preserving.

They’ve decided that what Trump wants to destroy – not just Obamacare but also international liberal structures and democracy itself – is worth preserving. Seeing Bannon’s smug delight in smashing the pillars of political and economic stability we have taken for granted should remind anti-Trump Americans: They are in quite a fight, and the stakes could not be higher.

A few words on the innocence of Trayvon Martin.

The very idea will outrage certain people. Experience says the notion of Trayvon Martin being innocent will offend them deeply.

But they can get over it. Or not.

Because it is five years now since Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin’s unarmed son died, five years since he was killed in Sanford, Florida, by a neighborhood watchman who dubbed him, on sight, a “f––– punk” and one of “these a–holes.”

Five years. And there are things that need saying. His divorced parents say much of it in “Rest in Power,” their new book about the tragedy.

“My son had been intensely alive!”

Martin writes. “My son had been a life force, a teenager who had hopes and dreams and so much love. But in death, he became a figure we could only see through the dark mirror of evidence and testimony, a cursed single night when our son and all that life inside him was reduced to a stranger, a black kid in a hoodie, a young man in the shadows. A suspect.”

Kaneland got a big boost at the foul line from junior center Blake Feiza, who missed time this season with a thumb injury. He finished with 11 points and six rebounds and went 9 for 11 from the free-throw line, including 7 for 8 in the fourth quarter.

“Blake Feiza stepped up and made a lot of clutch free throws,” Franck said.

The Knights’ wins this season have come courtesy of a stingy defense.

Eight of their 10 victories have come when they’ve held the opposing team to 40 points or fewer.

Kaneland opened with a defense Joe Conroy said it hadn’t showed all season, and the Chargers didn’t get their first field-goal attempt until 7:02 left in

the opening quarter – a missed 3-pointer by junior Kyle Czerak.

The Knights showed plenty of patience on offense, too, especially when they held the lead in the second half.

Coming out of halftime with the ball and a 19-18 advantage, the Knights didn’t take their first field-goal attempt until 6:45 left in the quarter.

“We wanted long possessions because we know they score a lot of points and have won a lot of games scoring a lot of points,” Joe Conroy said.

By the numbers: Stuart, who Joe Conroy said “was a man all night,” had five points and six rebounds, Hed had four points and five rebounds and Mason Conroy added four points and five rebounds.

Beyond the stats: With ACC holding the ball for the final shot of the first half, senior Donovan Reid dribbled the ball near midcourt while looking over at coach Nathan Drye for a play.

Hed took advantage by sneaking in and knocking the ball out and forcing a jump ball in the scramble. The Chargers got the possession arrow, but the Kaneland defense didn’t allow a good look for ACC as time expired at the half – causing an animated Joe Conroy to yell and pump his fist.

They said it: “For us to take a onepoint lead into half and make that kind of play, it makes me proud because I’m a defensive-minded coach,” Joe Conroy said of Hed’s play on the ball.

“They recognized and they attacked.”

Up next: Kaneland advances to face either Genoa-Kingston or Sycamore in the championship game. The Cogs and Spartans play at 7 p.m. Wednesday, with the winner facing the Knights at 7 p.m. Friday.

SYCAMORE – Kaneland boys basketball coach Joe Conroy has said his Knights are better than their record indicates.

They proved it Tuesday night.

Entering the postseason with eight wins, the No. 8-seeded Knights used a key run in the middle of the third quarter and held on for a 48-40 upset over No. 2-seeded Aurora Central Catholic for their second straight victory in a Class 3A Sycamore Regional semifinal.

“I think we finally put a game together where we played our way,” Conroy said. “Right now, we’re the underdog. All year long, we’ve felt like we’re better than our record shows.

We’ve played some really good basketball teams and we’ve really taken our lumps all year. We feel like we still have more to prove.”

Kaneland (10-20) was 6-18 at one point late in the season, but have won four of its past six games – including 6139 over No. 11 IMSA in the first round of the regional.

The Knights led for nearly the entire second half against the Chargers, thanks to a timely 6-0 run in the third quarter – including two free throws by senior Jake Hed, a layup by senior Dan Franck and a fastbreak pull-up jumper by senior Mason Conroy – to put them ahead, 25-20, with 3:26 left in the period.

Kaneland never gave up the lead the rest of the way.

“The intensity was for sure cranked up today, but it was a fun, though,” said Franck, who had tied a career-high with 24 points and added 10 rebounds.

“I think we just didn’t close out games (earlier in the season). I think that’s what it was.”

Franck was an offensive force for the Knights in the fourth quarter, as well. With the Knights leading, 28-27, early in the period, they went on a 9-2 run that consisted of all nine points coming from the left-handed senior.

He finished shooting 10 for 17 from the field and 4 for 6 from the foul line.

“I think he’s finally realized that he deserves to be on the floor,” Joe Conroy said.

sports@daily-chronicle.com With a chance to put itself in great position for a home game in the Mid-American Conference tournament next week, the Northern Illinois men’s basketball team lost to Western Michigan, 70-56, Tuesday at the Convocation Center.

The Huskies led for only 1 minute, 50 seconds of the game and remained tied with Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan for the eighth seed in the MAC tournament, which starts Monday. The fourth through eighth seeds will host games Monday.

The Broncos (14-15 overall, 9-8 MAC West) scored nine straight points to close the first half, building a 39-29 lead. NIU (15-15, 7-10 MAC West) pulled to 41-39 with 15:15 left, but the Broncos scored eight straight points in barely a minute to get the lead back to 10. They never led by fewer than six the rest of the way.

Marin Maric scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, shooting 8 for 9 from the floor for the Huskies. Dontel Highsmith scored 11 for NIU. Tucker Haymond scored 15 points to lead the Broncos.

The Huskies end the regular season Friday at Ball State.

NIU All-Century Team member Booker dies Abe Booker was a colossus in stature, deed and reputation.

What would one expect for someone nicknamed “The Book”?

Sixty years ago, the 6-foot-6, 231-pound Chicagoan towered over prep and college opposition as a prolific post player in basketball and an imposing end in football.

His unique talents and size led Booker to All-Century Team status for Northern Illinois University hoops, two basketball halls of fame, a tryout with the Harlem Globetrotters and a free-agent stint with the NFL Baltimore Colts.

The NIU two-sport letterman and Wells High School stats-stuffing phenom died Feb. 3 at Roseland Community Hospital in Chicago. The funeral was Feb. 11.

Time has not erased the impact of his boardwork.

Booker’s amazing single-game NIU rebound record (32, vs. Eastern Michigan on Dec. 17, 1959) stands today. His career rebound numbers (13.9 a game in 45 appearances from 1958-61) tie for third on the all-time Huskies list with W. L. Moore (196265). Careerwise, only Jim Bradley (16.8) and Jim Smith (14.4) averaged more.

As a junior and a senior, Booker posted season double-doubles in points and rebounds. In 21 games for coach Bill Healey in 1959-60, he averaged 15.0 points and 15.8 rebounds. During 1960-61, No. 52 posted 15.8 points and 14.3 rebounds in 13 games.

As the story goes, NIU football coach Howard Fletcher persuaded a reluctant Booker to come out for his sport, and Booker

During the university’s centennial celebration in 1999-2000, Booker was honored on the NIU All-Century Team by a 29-person committee.

A 1980 inductee into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Booker also was a charter member of the Chicago Public League Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1992. That class also included Bo Ellis, Cazzie Russell and Terry Cummings.

In the paint, Booker was known for his surly attitude and nasty elbows. In personal contrast, his mom taught him to play the piano as a boy. As an adult, he loved playing the upright bass.

Speculation at the time had Booker going to Seton Hall, but he went to Utah State and then NIU. Although the free-agency stint with the Colts was previously undocumented, there is a publicity photo of Booker in a Colts uniform from 1961 in the archives of a Baltimore newspaper.

A U.S. Army veteran, Booker is survived by his second wife, a son, and three grandchildren.

DALLAS – The Blackhawks have re-acquired defenseman Johnny Oduya, who left in free agency for the Dallas Stars after being part of two Stanley Cup championships in Chicago.

Dallas traded Oduya to the Hawks on Tuesday night in exchange for young forward Mark McNeill and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2018 NHL draft.

Oduya first played with the Hawks from 2012 to Johnny Oduya ’15, with nine goals and 34 assists in 219 games. He appeared in 71 playoff games with the Hawks, including their Stanley Cup championships in 2013 and 2015.

The 35-year-old Oduya has one goal and six assists in 37 games this season with the Stars.

McNeill had six goals and 22 assists in 58 games for Rockford in the AHL. He has played in only one NHL game.

CHICAGO – When she first heard the mumps was back in the NHL, Brian Campbell’s wife, Lauren, did what just about everybody would do. She went on the internet.

“Obviously, everybody got their booster shots back then,” Campbell said. “But my wife goes on Web MD all the time, and she said it only works 80 percent of the time. So who knows? I’m not a doctor.”

The mumps, which rampaged through the NHL in the 2014-15 seaBrian son, has made a most Campbell unwelcome comeback, with the Vancouver Canucks and Minnesota Wild hit so far. Wild standouts Zach Parise and Jason Pominville were scratched from Minnesota’s game Monday night and will be quarantined from their teammates for at least five days, meaning they’ll miss at least three games. During the 2014-15 outbreak, some players missed weeks, some missed only a day or two.

The Blackhawks made it through the last outbreak unscathed, and both captain Jonathan Toews and coach Joel Quenneville said they were hoping to get lucky again. Because in the warm, moist, relatively gross environment of an NHL dressing room – not to mention all the blood, sweat and spit that flies in close quarters on the ice – there’s only so much you can do in terms of prevention.

After all, the Hawks were just in Minnesota last week.

“You’ve got to really take care of yourself, get your sleep, get your rest – all the little things that a doctor would tell you to do,” Toews said.

“Other than that, it’s just making sure you’re healthy and your immune system is strong. What else can you really do to control that? Hopefully, knock on wood, we scoot by this whole deal again.”

There are some practical precautions a team can take. Can Maddon’s players find comfort in handling adverse situations in title defense?

Baseball players will sit still for only so long and listen to what some might consider psychobabble. So after Maddon presented his theories a couple of weeks ago, pitcher Jake Arrieta was asked about being uncomfortable.

“What I like about the uncomfortable aspect and that motto is you have to find a way to be comfortable with an uncomfortable situation,” Arrieta said. “We had a lot of uncomfortable situations last year where we were able to persevere and get through and come out ahead.

“I think it’s going to be very similar this year. We’re going to have situations that aren’t ideal or aren’t very comfortable. But if we come together as a unit and overcome adversity, we’re going to be just fine.”

Maddon said he was going to have T-shirts printed – probably made of comfortable cotton – to get the “uncomfortable” theme ingrained. But while making “uncomfortable” a way of life, Maddon said he doesn’t want to take away from the fun the Cubs have been having.

“While we’re balancing this thing out, talking about it, feeling uncomfortable in a sense that we want to keep growing and pushing, I want us to keep having the same kind of blast that we’ve had the last two years,” he said.

“I think that’s important, also.”

MESA, Ariz. – David Robertson keeps his suitcases within arm’s length.

Whether he’s getting ready to leave spring training and join Team USA for the World Baseball Classic or perhaps moving to another team in a trade, the White Sox closer can’t be feeling very grounded these days.

“Nothing you can do about it, that’s the thing,” Robertson said of trade rumors. “If we get moved, we get moved – just another time for us to pack up everything and go somewhere else for a short period of time and move again. It is what it is.’’

The subject of hot trade rumors leading up to spring training, Robertson was converged on by media when pitchers and catchers reported two weeks ago. The contending Washington Nationals are in need of bullpen help,

the Sox are rebuilding, and Robertson has $12 million and $13 million of salary remaining on the final two years of his contract.

Since then, the chatter has leveled off somewhat, but Robertson said he’s sure the trade rumors have affected his wife, Erin, more than she’s letting on. But the couple, who are active in the community with charity work including Robertson’s High Socks For Hope David effort, knows it comes Robertson with the territory.

“I like it here,” Robertson said.

“We’re settled in. We have a good group of guys, a good chance to win. If this is a so-called rebuilding year, I want to be a part of it. If they move me, they move me.”

Perhaps Robertson will stick around longer than most thought he would. The

Nats, who had missed on closers Kenley Jansen and Mark Melancon, signed Joe Blanton for $4 million Tuesday.

Blanton’s not a closer, but he does add needed depth to the back end of Dusty Baker’s bullpen.

Robertson has pitched to ERAs of 3.41 and 3.47 in his two seasons with the Sox, not exactly shut-down production.

But he has 71 saves in 85 opportunities, a career 2.97 ERA and is averaging 11.9 strikeouts per nine innings in his career.

In his first outing of the spring Sunday, Robertson pitched a scoreless fourth inning. Because of his prep work for the WBC, “I’m definitely a few weeks ahead of schedule,” Robertson said. “Normally, I wouldn’t even dare pitch in a game in February.

“As a reliever, you only need a handful of outings to get it ready for the season, because if you can’t figure it out in five or six outings, well …”

“Authenticity” is one of Joe Maddon’s new catch words for 2017, but one of the more intriguing ones is “uncomfortable.”

Who wants to be uncomfortable?

Nobody.

But the Cubs manager sees some benefits to his players dealing with a little uncomfortableness, beginning in spring training and heading into the reguJoe Maddon lar season.

It’s not that Maddon wants to keep the Cubs from getting complacent; he doesn’t view that as a problem.

No, Maddon sees an opportunity for growth arising out of being uncomfortable for the defending world champions.

Sole Meuniere: Improving On Perfection AP photo

Julia Child’s favorite French dish improved by swapping fish, adding brine

Julia Child was able to remember the single most decisive moment in her life with photographic clarity. It was her first bite of her first meal in France, a fish dish called Sole Meuniere. That first forkful, she wrote, was “a morsel of perfection,” and it set her on the path to become the Julia we’d come to know and love.

Although it is indeed a classic of French cuisine, Sole Meuniere – a filet of fish dipped in flour, then sautéed in butter – isn’t terribly complicated. But it’s one of those dishes that really benefits from attention to detail. And in the interest of improving on “perfection,” I’ve added a few new details.

Let’s start with the fish. Julia was served Dover sole. Thick, firm and delicious, Dover sole is widely available in Europe, but not in the United States. In fact, much of the “sole” sold on these shores isn’t sole at all but a kind of flounder ... and much of that is endangered due to overfishing and should be avoided. So opt for Pacific flounder or Pacific sole or just reach for any firm-fleshed white fish that is not endangered. (Visit www.seafoodwatch.org).

Still, most white fish, even Dover sole, is a tad bland. Accordingly, Sole Meuniere always is finished with a little pick-me-up of lemon and salt. This recipe starts with acid and salt in the form of a salty

buttermilk brine, which deeply pre-seasons the fish.

Typically, sole meuniere calls for all-purpose flour, but if you can find “instantized” flour, aka Wondra, grab it. The fish is crispier when it’s coated with Wondra. Two important final notes: Wait until the pan is almost smoking before adding the fish, and don’t flour the fish until the last minute, which will prevent it from becoming gummy.

Given that we’ve added capers and lemon slices to this version, it’s more properly called Sole Grenobloise than Sole Meuniere. Whatever, it’s delish.

Start to finish: 30 minutes plus 1 to 3 hours marinating time Servings: 4 1 cup buttermilk 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 ¼ to 1 ½ pounds firm white fish fillets 1 small lemon 3 to 4 tablespoons vegetable oil 1/2 cup instantized flour 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into several pieces 1 tablespoon drained capers Chopped fresh parsley for garnish In a resealable plastic bag combine the buttermilk and salt

and stir with a small whisk or fork until the salt is dissolved.

Add the fish fillets, making sure they are coated with the buttermilk, seal the bag and place it in the refrigerator. Let the fish marinate for at least 1 hour and preferably 3 hours.

While the fish is marinating, cut off the top and the bottom of the lemon. Place it on the cutting board cut-side down.

Starting at the top, following the curve of the lemon, cut off the rind and the pith. Working over a small bowl to catch any juice, cut between the membranes to separate the lemon into segments. Reserve both the segments and the juice.

In a large nonstick skillet heat half the oil over medium-high heat. Remove half the fish from the buttermilk, letting the excess drip off, and dip it in the flour, coating it on all sides and shaking off the excess. Add it to the pan and cook it until golden on both sides and just cooked through, about 3 minutes total. Transfer the fish to a platter and cover it loosely with foil.

Repeat the procedure with the remaining oil and fish. Discard any oil left in the pan.

Add the butter, the capers and a hefty pinch of salt to the skillet and cook over medium heat, swirling the butter, until it is golden. Add the lemon segments and cook, 2 to 3 minutes.

Pour the sauce over the fish, sprinkle with the parsley and eat right away.

Years ago I was traveling alone for work in New York City, and I popped into a random restaurant across the street from my hotel.

I asked for a menu recommendation from my waiter, and he insisted on a claypot fish, a simple dish of cod, tomatoes, onion, potatoes and lemon baked in a small cazuela, or clay pot.

I was skeptical, but completely hooked at first bite: fresh, simple, comforting all at once. The veggies created a light aromatic broth that steamed the fish gently to delicate perfection.

The simple meal was so good, in fact, I went back the second night of my trip and ordered the exact same thing. In a city with more must-try restaurants than I could ever hope to visit, repeat visits mean something.

I’ve made various versions of claypot fish myself over the years, using cute tapas-style dishes I bought while visiting Barcelona, and I’ve loved every one of them.

I was exploring the (crazy?) idea of making uber-fast meals in the microwave, and immediately claypot fish came to mind: could a covered glass dish provide the right environment to quickly steam the fish correctly, and avoid the rubbery-results one might expect from a microwaved meal?

The short answer is yes. The trick is not to overcook the fish, even by a minute, so check the fish frequently.

I use a glass dish, so admittedly it’s missing the charm and earthy flavor of the cazuela, but this microwaved version of claypot fish is legit delicious.

It’s versatile (feel free to swap in some of your favorite ingredients or herbs), healthy and full of vitamins and lean protein. Plus, anytime you

can get dinner on the table in under 15 minutes is one less night you’ll be tempted to swing by the drive-thru.

And that is a huge win for both your health and your wallet.

Weeknight Claypot Fish Start to Finish: 15 minutes Yield: 4 servings

1 pound fingerling potatoes 4 fillets of Dover sole, or other white fish, such as cod or flounder, about 1 pound 3 roma tomatoes, diced 3 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 cup chopped red onion 2 tablespoons capers (or briny olives) Chopped parsley, for garnish Pierce the fingerling potatoes two or three times each with a fork and place in a glass microwave-safe dish with cover. Fill with enough water to cover about one-fourth the way up the potatoes (about 1/2 cup water) and 1/4 teaspoon salt.

Microwave for 10 minutes. Potatoes should be firm but with some give. Season the fish fillets with a little salt and pepper and lay on top of the par-cooked potatoes.

In a small bowl, mix together the tomatoes, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, onion and capers.

Spoon on top of the fish. Cover and microwave for 5 minutes.

Check for doneness – fish should be opaque. If not done, microwave for another minute or two, but check every 30 seconds.

Let sit for a minute or two and then serve.

Sprinkle with chopped parsley.

Local schools will advance to sectional competition at NIU DAILY CHRONICLE

Kishwaukee College hosted the Worldwide Youth in Sciences and Engineering Academic Challenge on Feb. 7. Eight area high schools sent teams of students to compete in academic testing in seven categories: biology, chemistry, computer science, English, engineering graphics, mathematics and physics.

Competing high schools were placed in one of four divisions based on enrollment.

Division 300 is for schools with 300 or fewer students; competitors were Christian Cornerstone, Paw Paw High School, Indian Creek High School and Hiawatha High School.

Division 700 is for schools with 300 to 700 students. The lone competitor in this category was Genoa-Kingston High School.

Division 1500 is for schools with 700 to 1,500 students; competitors in this division were Rochelle

Township High School and Sycamore High School.

Division Unlimited is for schools with enrollments of more than 1,500 students. The lone competitor in this category was DeKalb High School.

Earning Division 1500 first-place team honors was Rochelle Township High School, and second place went to Sycamore High School.

Earning first-place team honors for Division 300 schools was Cornerstone Christian, second place went to Hiawatha, and third place to Indian Creek.

First- and second-place teams advance to the WYSE sectional competition at Northern Illinois University. The DeKalb and the Genoa-Kingston teams also will advance to NIU. Medals were awarded in each of the four divisions to the students earning the top three scores in each academic area. Gold medal winners in each academic category are: Biology: Cory Phillips, DeKalb; Jacob Handel, Sycamore; Saul Osorio, G-K; and Gracie Fischer, Cornerstone.

Preservatives can cause allergies Dear Doctor: BHT, a preservative in a lot of food products, really does a number on me. One serving of food with BHT, and I wake up with terrific pain in my head and right eye, upset stomach, chills and fever.

How common are such allergies, and how can I avoid these reactions?

Dear Reader: BHA and BHT, short for butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene, are antioxidants used to preserve a wide array of foods, including snack foods, meats, butter, chewing gum and rice, as well as cosmetic products and medications. Both BHA and BHT prevent oxidation of oils, helping prevent ingredients from becoming rancid and, in some foods – such as breakfast cereals, baked goods and potato chips – helping maintain product crispness.

These antioxidants rarely cause allergic reactions. This first was officially evaluated more than 25 years ago in a placebo-controlled trial involving two patients who had a history of hives; the patients were first exposed to BHA and BHT via foods in their diet, then to a placebo. The elimination of these two components from their diet led to a reduction in the frequency and the severity of their hives.

In 2007, a study published in Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology identified the mechanism for the allergic reaction.

In studying rats given BHT, researchers found an increase in immediate skin allergies, linking it to an allergic response that caused a type of white blood cells, known as mast cells, to release the chemicals histamine and leukotrienes. These chemicals caused an allergic response in the skin.

BHA in particular has been singled out as potentially increasing the risk of cancer. This worry stems from studies in rats and hamsters in the 1980s. One notable study showed that rats fed diets with up to 1 to 2 percent of BHA had increased can-

In the United States, the highest amount of BHA that is approved in foods is 0.02 percent, which is significantly less. Overall, some studies in rats have shown an increased risk of cancer, and others have shown a decreased risk in cancer.

When it comes to humans, researchers have found little evidence of a potential cancer link. In a study published in 2000 in Food and Chemical Toxicology, researchers in the Netherlands used a dietary questionnaire to ask 120,000 men and women between the ages of 55 and 69 about their dietary intake of BHA and BHT. After six years, the authors found no increase in stomach cancer among those with higher BHA/BHT intake. When it comes to cosmetic products, the very low percentages of BHA and BHT found in those products have not been linked to cancer.

Your reactions to BHT appear to be a form of allergy. Obviously, the best thing you can do is simply avoid this chemical.

While writing this, I looked at the foods in my house to determine whether they might contain BHA or BHT and found only one item.

So it seems you could eliminate your home exposure to BHA and BHT by reading labels.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY I have always tried to be a Jeanne compassionate Phillips person. I have experienced a lot of abuse, and I’m sensitive to others who go through it. A man across the street from me has been arrested three times in the last six months for domestic abuse. I rarely see a woman there, so I don’t know if the victim is a woman or a child. I moved into the neighborhood only six months ago. My elderly mother lives here with me.

I’m torn about what to do. My heart says I should reach out to the people who live there and make friends with them. My head says stay out of their business because I don’t need the drama.

How do we as a society not turn a blind eye to abuse in our neighborhoods and still protect ourselves and loved ones? I don’t want to put my mother or myself in jeopardy, but I don’t want the person/people in that house to think they are alone. – No More in Texas Dear No More: While I applaud you for being so caring, for your own safety, I caution you to proceed very slowly in getting to know these people. Some communities provide anonymous tip lines so citizens can report a crime without endangering themselves or their families. The best thing you can do is to keep your eyes open and if something is happening, call the police and report it. If it involves a child, contact child protective services.

Dear Abby: My parents and I were always close. However, recently they stole my debit card, my PIN and child support check. They forged my signature and spent the entire check, which was more than $1,000.

I am always lending them money. I have never said no when they needed it. To top it off, they lied to me about the check for an entire month. I only found out when I turned the fraud in to the bank and heard it was my parents who had committed it.

Joey Adams, a comedian and columnist who died in 1999, said “A psychiatrist is a fellow who asks you a lot of expensive questions your wife asks for nothing.”

At the bridge table, it is sometimes a question of making it too expensive for an opponent to win a trick -- as in this deal. How can South make four spades after West leads the diamond king to declarer’s ace?

South’s four-spade overcall was sensible. He needed little from partner to be making game, he knew a slam was unlikely and he wanted to make it expensive for the opponents to bid higher.

South started with nine top tricks: seven spades, one heart and one diamond. He could get an extra winner if (a) he could play the trump suit without loss; or (b) the heart finesse worked; or (c) he could gain a club trick; or (d) he could ruff a club on the board.

However, the bidding suggested that both major-suit finesses were losing. Also, West was most unlikely to have the club ace and king, because he surely would have led that ace at trick one.

Then South saw the solution. He played a heart to dummy’s ace and led the club four. What could East have done?

If he rose with his king, declarer would have gained a club trick from the jack opposite the queen-five.

So East played low. But when West took South’s queen with his ace, he couldn’t win, either. He did his best by returning a club. East won with his king and shifted to his trump, but declarer took the trick with his ace and ruffed his last club on the board.
