DeKALB – Project site registration for the 11th annual NIU Cares Day is available online, with the priority deadline set for Tuesday.

All nonprofit organizations, community agencies, and individual homeowners are eligible to apply.

Student Involvement & Leadership Development at Northern Illinois University sponsors the event, in which students, faculty, staff and alumni take on volunteer projects in the community.

Past projects have included painting rooms and buildings for schools and service organizations, cleaning basements and attics for the elderly, helping organizations prepare for events, planting gardens and performing yardwork for homeowners who are no longer able to do the work themselves.

Participation in the event is free; project sites only need to provide volunteers with the supplies

needed to complete the job.

Boy Scouts host food drive for DeKalb County homeless

SYCAMORE – St. Mary’s Cub Scout Pack 140 and Boy Scout Troop 40 will be collecting canned goods, boxed food and paper products as part of its Camping for Cans Food Drive.

Goods will be collected from noon Saturday until noon Sunday in front of St. Mary’s Church Purple House, 222 Waterman St. in Sycamore.

All donations will benefit Hope Haven of DeKalb County, a nonprofit homeless shelter and housing program in DeKalb.

Troops will camp outside of the church while collecting donations for Camping for Cans, a tradition that was started in 2010.

League of Women Voters hosts DeKalb candidate forum

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The city becoming a more business-friendly community was a common theme during a forum hosted by the League of Women Voters for all of DeKalb’s mayoral and aldermanic candidates Thursday.

The four mayoral candidates, Michael Embrey, Misty Haji-Sheikh, incumbent John Rey and Jerry Smith, as well as all of the candidates in contested aldermanic races, fielded written questions from about 80 attendees.

Regarding city funding for capital projects, Rey said it is important to look at projects with a long-term idea of where the revenue will be sourced.

This is becoming especially important because of the expiration of tax increment financing districts over the next few years.

To maintain the city’s posture of being business-friendly, Rey said this must be done through locally approved code so that small businesses expressing interest in DeKalb aren’t surprised by city regulations.

“We are constantly seeking opportunities to improve,” Rey said. “People are a major asset in this city, both the skilled workforce and investors in projects.”

Smith said city projects should be evaluated based on their merit when providing funding and the city should work with groups such as the DeKalb County Economic Development Corp. to show small businesses that DeKalb is the right community for them.

“During the early days of this campaign, there have been a number of remarks about Jerry Smith being too nice of a guy,” Smith said. “I’d only ask that you look at my background and look at where I’ve volunteered, and you’ll find that this nice guy can be decisive, can say no when no needs to be said and can get people around a table to reach consensus when an issue needs resolution.”

Embrey, a local businessman, said being more business-friendly involves being more proactive with projects to avoid any time-consuming setbacks or conflicts.

“We need to embrace someone coming to this town, not throw rules and regulations making them hesitant to come,” Embrey said.

About 80 people attended a League of Women Voters forum for the DeKalb mayoral and aldermanic candidates Thursday at the DeKalb Municipal Building. regardless of the outcomes of the election, and would be open to having candidates serve in roles suited for them.

“We the candidates don’t have all the answers, and one of my focuses is nurturing future aldermen and mayors for future growth,” Embrey said.

Haji-Sheikh said that as a member of the DeKalb County Board, she has not been afraid to perform cuts to balance the budget, which the county has done successfully.

She also suggested a property tax freeze and changing the city’s municipal code if necessary to attract businesses, which she said had to be done on the county level to bring Whiskey Acres Distilling Co. to the county.

“We need to celebrate the wonderful things we have and make everybody aware of that,” Haji-Sheikh said. “I want to be the type of mayor you want: responsive, energetic and effective.”

Second Ward Alderman Bill Finucane discussed the need to attract new businesses and help existing local ones while also maintaining a 25 percent reserve balance, which would become a greater issue when

funding pensions.

His opponent, William Lamb, talked about reducing crime in the area through the cooperation of Northern Illinois University and DeKalb police.

“People say crime is not something I could make a dent on at this level, but it’s important to keep it in the forefront,” Lamb said. “Safety is the primary responsibility.”

Bob Snow, 4th Ward alderman, and his two opponents, Michael Bauling and Patrick Fagan, were asked about their positions on the downtown development project along First Street and Lincoln Highway to convert a series of buildings into an upscale apartment complex.

All three were supportive of the project, but Bauling was concerned with the amount of trash and lack of parking the building could generate, and Fagan had reservations about allocating $3 million in TIF funding for the project.

Snow said it is important to attract visitors to the community.

“The city runs on sales tax, utility tax and transportation taxes,” Snow

said. “Property taxes don’t run buildings or fund police cars, which is why visitorship is the best way to increase revenue.”

Sixth Ward candidate Mike Verbic said one of his ideas is to evaluate how tax incentives offered to businesses have affected the city. His opponent, Michael “Max” Maxwell, said the city needs to look into more than a fiveyear plan and make realistic projections about where the city is headed.

Tony Faivre, the lone 7th Ward Alderman candidate, and James Elliott, a candidate for Afton Township highway commissioner, both gave brief statements without taking questions.

The League of Women Voters will host a similar forum for the 10 DeKalb School District 428 board candidates at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St. Voter registration also will be available during this forum. Anyone wishing to register can bring in a photo ID and a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, pay check or any other government document that has their name and address on it.

Spotters train for severe weather

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Springlike temperatures have warmed the area for days, and thunderstorms are in the local forecast for Friday.

Should those storms turn violent, about 100 people who were in attendance at a recent weather-spotting training session at the DeKalb Police Department, 700 W. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb, will be ready to help track any severe weather events and spread the word about any potential dangers that arise from severe weather.

The class was held Tuesday and featured a presentation by Ben Deubelbeiss of the National Weather Service office in Romeoville. Deubelbeiss began the course by telling those in attendance about the importance of weather spotters.

“Radars have limits,” he said.

“Spotters are used to verify what’s seen on a radar, but also to fill in the gaps that radars miss.

“It’s a community effort to warn others of severe weather. We have a lot of technology, but we rely on spotters to complete the picture.”

Tornadoes are the most common threat of severe weather. Although they occur year-round, tornadoes are most prevalent from April through June, and most likely to form between 3 and 7 p.m., according to the Illinois State Climatologist Office.

Lester and Jean Schuszik of Rochelle had not forgotten the tornado that cut a path through Ogle and northwestern DeKalb counties in April 2015. The tornado caused extensive property damage in the rural hamlet of Fairdale and killed two women there. Several people said they wanted to learn about warning signs

“We’re not too far from where the tornado went through [in April 2015],” Jean Schuszik said. “I wanted to learn how to prepare for something terrible like that.”

The rise of social media has changed the way people communicate about all topics, including the weather. Now, messages on social media are a new and effective way the weather service gathers information, Deubelbeiss said.

Social media was where Molly Stadler of Malta heard about the weather-spotting class in the first place.

“I live out in the country,” Stadler said. “I can’t hear the sirens. I want to learn what I’m seeing and what to look for, and help others if I can.”

Others took the course as a refresher. Bob Meyers and DeKalb County historian Sue Breese, of DeKalb, are weather spotters for WBBM-TV in Chicago.

“This class is a good reminder of what to look for,” Breese said.

Northern Illinois University chief meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste told the class the goal of the class also is to teach people to accurately identify and report weather phenomena so that others in a storm’s path can take precautions.

Park district to break ground on rec campus

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Park District will host a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for the construction of its 25-acre recreation campus.

The event will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday across from the Sports Complex, 435 Airport Road. The public is invited to attend.

The recreation campus will include a community center, dog park, sled hill and splash pad, which are four of the seven projects planned in the district’s Action 2020 plan.

The district’s $13 million improvement plan also calls for two bike trail connections, Sports Complex expansion and a new golf course irrigation system.

Park board President Ted Strack said the district is in the process of finalizing the necessary permits through the city before beginning to move dirt for construction.

“The groundbreaking will be ceremonial in nature to get things rolling,” he said.

Strack said construction of the soccer complex has been pushed back because of delays in the grant application process, so the recreation campus con-

struction has been brought forward.

He said the district is looking to have the 22,400-square-foot community center finished and open to the public by the end of 2018.

Strack said the sled hill would be built in conjunction with the community center with the dirt moved from the building site. It will be called the Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital Sled Hill.

The dog park will be called the Brian Bemis Family Dog Park after the family who owns the Brian Bemis Automotive Group in Sycamore.

Born: March 9, 1931; in Palmyra, VA Died: February 15, 2017; in Flagstaff, AZ Dr. Aubrey Steven Messenger, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2017 in Flagstaff, AZ at 85 years old. He was with his wife, his three children, son-in-law, pastor and close friends.

Steve will be remembered as a kind, gentle man who loved talking to and helping people without ever expecting anything in return.

He loved his family and God’s beautiful creations. He was an avid bird-watcher and lifetime member of The Audubon Society and The National Park Service.

Steve was born on March 9, 1931 in Palmyra, Virginia. After high school in Powhatan, Virginia, he attended Virginia Tech, graduated from North Carolina State and received his PhD from Michigan State University. In 1955 he met the love of his life, Els Weitzel (Hilversum, Holland), on the steps of St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome, Italy.

As an associate professor, he taught earth science at Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, IL) and was a valued researcher at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois for over 30 years. In 1992 he received a Fulbright-Hays Award to do research in Costa Rica. In 1998 Steve and Els retired to Flagstaff, AZ. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years; three children, Rose, Dawn (Ralph)

Early voting off to a slow start in county

SYCAMORE – DeKalb County has several competitive races in this year’s consolidated elections, including a four-way contest for mayor of DeKalb, a five-person race for Sycamore city clerk, and a whopping 10 people seeking three seats on the DeKalb School District 428 board.

As of 3:30 p.m. on the first day of early voting, only 12 people cast ballots at the DeKalb County Legislative Center Gathertorium at 200 N. Main St. in Sycamore, DeKalb County clerk Doug Johnson said.

“Sadly, the consolidated elections usually are not very active,” Johnson said. “Historically, numbers show the turnout isn’t as high as in a presidential election.”

Consolidated elections for local offices are held in April of odd-numbered years in Illinois. They generally feature low turnout, but even by those standards, the numbers for April 2015

DeKalb County election judge banks and libraries. Voters can call the clerk’s office at 815-895-7147 to be directed to their nearest registrar.

The elections office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Registration will last through March 7 at these locations. After that, grace period registration will begin and last through election day. When an individual registers during the grace period, they must vote the same day.

The Illinois Board of Elections website did have voter registration options, but Johnson said that some counties are having primary elections that are in their grace period, so online registration is currently closed. By the time these elections conclude, DeKalb will already be within its grace period.

Residents also can check their voter registration status on the county website.

“We’re just ready and hoping to have another smooth election in DeKalb County,” Johnson said.

Residents can then vote at the DeKalb Township Building at 2323 S. Fourth St., DeKalb; the Northern Illinois University Holmes Student Center at 340 Carroll Ave., DeKalb; the Kirkland City Hall at 511 W. Main St., Kirkland; and the Sandwich Fire Station at 310 E. Railroad St., Sandwich.

Police dig in Joliet connected with ’90 cold case

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Illinois State Police, state crime scene investigators and the FBI spent Thursday digging at a Joliet home in connection with the 1990 disappearance of a former Will County sheriff’s deputy.

Since about 9 a.m., neighbors said, law enforcement personnel were unearthing a portion of a residential concrete basement slab at 100 S. Margaret St., near the intersection of West Jefferson Street and Larkin Avenue.

“The dig is being conducted in response to new leads provided in the missing persons case of Robin Abrams,” an Illinois State Police news release stated.

“The residents of the house are not involved in the case and are being temporarily relocated until the dig is complete.”

Law enforcement at the scene Thursday evening said no information would be released Thursday, and work at the scene would resume Friday morning.

Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said Thursday afternoon he had not been contacted by authorities about the dig, and that law enforcement only would contact his office if remains are found.

Abrams last was seen Oct. 4, 1990, on Goodenow Road near her family’s Beecher home, according to Herald-News files.

Illinois union OKs strike over Rauner contract dispute

SPRINGFIELD – Tens of thousands of state government workers have sanctioned a strike against Gov. Bruce Rauner and his contract terms, union officials said Thursday, kicking a two-year dispute into an unprecedented higher gear.

Members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 voted to authorize the union’s executive committee to call a walkout “if no other path forward can be found,” executive director Roberta Lynch said at a news conference.

CHICAGO – As educators around the U.S. wonder whether a crackdown on immigrants will reach their schoolhouse doors, principals in Chicago have been given a simple order: Do not let in federal immigration agents without a criminal warrant.

Hastert victim argues for remainder of hush money

CHICAGO – A sexual abuse victim of former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert is making another argument for the remainder of money he is owed for keeping silent about the politician’s misconduct.

The Chicago Tribune reported that in the latest filing in the man’s breach-of-contract lawsuit, Hastert’s victim maintains he is owed the entire $3.5 million agreed to.

That’s because he was no longer obligated to remain silent once Hastert told federal authorities about their agreement.

Official: No military use for deportations

MEXICO CITY – Seeking to tamp down growing unease in Latin America, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly pledged Thursday that the U.S. won’t enlist its military to enforce immigration laws and that there will be “no mass deportations.”

Only hours earlier, President Donald Trump suggested the opposite. He told CEOs at the White House the deportation push was a “military operation.”

Kelly, speaking in Mexico’s capital, said all deportations will comply with human rights requirements and the U.S. legal system, including its multiple appeals for those facing deportation. He said the U.S. approach will involve “close coordination” with Mexico’s government.

“There will be no use of military forces in immigration,” Kelly said. “There will be no – repeat, no – mass deportations.”

Yet while Kelly and U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson tried to alleviate Mexico’s concerns, Trump was fanning them further, with tough talk about “getting really bad dudes out of this country at a rate nobody has ever seen before.”

“It’s a military operation,” Trump said Thursday while his envoys were in Mexico City. “Because what has been allowed to come into our country, when you see gang violence that you’ve read about like never before and all of the things, much of that is people who are here illegally.”

It was an altogether different message from Kelly and Tillerson, who traveled here to meet with top Mexican officials at a time of intense turbulence for U.S.-Mexico relations. Indeed, Trump acknowledged he had sent his top diplomat south of the border on a “tough trip.”

In contrast to Trump, Tillerson and Kelly emphasized a U.S. commitment to work closely with Mexico on border security, illegal immigration and trafficking of drugs and weapons – issues Trump has made a central focus of his young presidency, much to Mexico’s dismay.

Both Tillerson and Kelly appeared to downplay any major rift between the U.S. and Mexico.

“In a relationship filled with vibrant colors, two strong sovereign countries from time to time will have differences,” Tillerson said.

“We listened closely and carefully to each other as we respectfully and patiently raised our respective concerns.”

For Mexico, that patience was running short.

Foreign Relations Secretary Luis Videgaray noted the “public and notorious differences” between the countries and said the Mexicans had raised the “legal impossibility” of a government making “unilateral” decisions affecting another country. Videgaray has previously raised the prospect Mexico could seek recourse at the United Nations or elsewhere for U.S. moves violating international law.

“It is an evident fact that Mexicans feel concern and irritation over what are perceived as policies that may hurt Mexicans and the national interest of Mexicans here and abroad,” Videgaray said.

The divergent tones from Trump and from his Cabinet officials left Mexico with an uncomfortable decision about whom to believe.

Throughout Trump’s first weeks, foreign leaders have grown increasingly skeptical as Trump’s envoys deliver soothing messages that are then negated by the president.

Mexico has been incensed that the U.S. announced – without Mexico’s sign-off – that people caught crossing the border illegally will be sent back to Mexico – even those from third countries who have no connection to Mexico.

Trump, Trudeau meeting hopeful Political analysts watched closely this past week when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Donald Trump met in Washington to discuss key issues such as the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement, security along the border, terrorism, and the travel ban.

Many observers including Trump’s senior officials were anxious over how the president would welcome Canada’s young leader.

After all, during tumultuous campaign for the presidency in 2016, Trump had lashed out at NAFTA, calling it a one-sided deal that resulted in massive job losses for the U.S. in addition to numerous plant closings.

NAFTA, a pact signed by the U.S., Canada and Mexico in 1994, eliminated many tariffs between those countries, presumably a move that would bolster trading among those same partners.

On the negative side, Trump emphasized the effect it had on many industries.

In Trump’s eyes, Mexico poses the biggest problem as it continues to grow its market share in the automotive sector.

By 2020, nearly 25 percent of all North American vehicle production will be in Mexico, compared with only 10 percent in Canada and 65 percent in the U.S. In 2015, Mexico was exporting 1.9 million vehicles to the U.S., surpassing Canada as the largest exporter to the U.S. Since he assumed duties as the prime minister, Trudeau has contended that he is not worried by the “little spikes of protectionism” during elections.

Perhaps because he didn’t want to offend the prime minister during their joint news conference in the White House, Trump stressed that as far as changes in the pact that he would seek, he merely expects to tweak certain sections that could impact U.S.-Canada relations. The president didn’t provide specifics, leaving a number of reporters unsure what he meant by tweaking For some in the press corps, that revived words of Prime Minister Pierre Eliott Trudeau (Justin’s father) to the Washington Press Club in 1969. On the subject of U.S.-Canada relations, he said: “Living next to (them) is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant.

No matter how friendly and even tempered is the beast, one is affected by every twitch and grunt.”

Still, Trudeau left an impression that he was sincere about establishing strong ties with the U.S. And that’s encouraging.

Relationship with Mexico still clumsy President Donald Trump has a good idea of the power the United States wields over Mexico, and the pain it may inflict.

Examples of this are the construction of a wall Mexico fiercely opposes; taxes that could be slapped on Mexican imports, wreaking havoc on its economy; deportations of undocumented Mexican immigrants living in the United States, who would be thrust back into a country that would struggle to absorb them.

Trump might have a fuzzier idea of the pain Mexico, its people furious and its pride wounded by his taunts and contempt, might inflict on the United States.

Start with those deportations. At least half of America’s 11 million unauthorized immigrants are Mexican, but many have no documents proving their nationality. For the Trump administration to deport them, it would need cooperation from Mexico, which cannot be forced to accept deportees without certifying that they are Mexicans. As former Mexican foreign minister Jorge Castañeda has already warned, Trump can round up hundreds of thousands or millions of migrants, but without Mexico’s cooperation, they could clog U.S. detention centers and immigration courts – at enormous cost, conceivably for years.

Consider, too, the effect on America’s southern border if Mexico were to loosen immigration controls on its own southern border – the one over which Central American refugees are already streaming north in near-record numbers. Even with what U.S. officials said are aggressive interdiction efforts by Mexican authorities, the Border Patrol detained more than 220,000 mainly Guatemalans, Hondurans and Salvadorans crossing from Mexico

into the United States in the fiscal year ending last fall, exceeding the number of Mexicans apprehended, which has fallen to a 45-year low. If you think the Border Patrol is swamped now, as Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly insists, imagine if Mexico, which last year sent home more than 140,000 Central Americans, simply stepped aside.

U.S. and Mexican officials work closely on an array of other bilateral concerns, from drug trafficking and organized crime to human smuggling and anti-terrorism programs. Privately, U.S. officials may grouse that their counterparts aren’t always paragons of efficiency; they also acknowledge that, without Mexico’s help, combating crime and controlling the border would be infinitely more difficult.

In launching his presidential campaign, Trump called Mexicans rapists, and he has taunted the Mexican government at every turn. Those displays of public humiliation are not constructive elements in diplomacy; they may easily come back to haunt Washington.

Already, his disdain has inflamed Mexican popular opinion, improving the prospects of Mexico’s anti-American left in next year’s presidential elections.

Kelly, who as a Marine led U.S. Southern Command, said in his confirmation hearing that partnerships “as far south as Peru” are more important to U.S. border security than building a wall. Along with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, he headed to Mexico on Wednesday, just after the Department of Homeland Security released its new deportation guidelines. If the goal was to widen bilateral cooperation and soothe the harsh feelings Trump has engendered with our neighbor and ally, the timing was pitiable.

When I read about Olivas’ suicide, I immediately thought of another family of immigrants I wrote about in December 2010. The parents – I called them Mary and Joe to protect their identities – and their two elder children were born in Mexico. They fled for their lives, crossing the border illegally and then paying strangers $6,000 to ride in windowless vans from Arizona to a small town in northeast Ohio. They found full-time work and brought three more children into the world.

They lived in constant fear of discovery, but they were willing to take the risk to improve the lives of their children – an American value, I was raised to believe.

As I wrote at the time, one foggy evening in 2010, Joe was driving home

from work, when police pulled him over for using high-beam headlights. He was gone before his wife and children could even visit him at the police station.

His 11-year-old daughter, Emma, took his deportation the hardest. She was a bright student, but her light burned out in her father’s absence. The longer he was gone, the more morose and combative she became. Mary shared her concern in phone calls with her husband, but she was trying to keep her family afloat. One afternoon, Mary left Emma to watch the younger children so that she and her eldest daughter could run errands.

By the time they returned, Emma was gone. She had coiled a cord around her neck and tied it to the banister and then slid down the stairs until she suffocated.

I learned about Emma only after she had died, in an interview with Veronica Isabel Dahlberg, who is a co-founder and the executive director of HOLA, an advocacy group for the large Latino community in northeast Ohio. After reading about Olivas’ suicide on that bridge, I called Dahlberg to see how Emma’s family is doing now.

After his daughter’s suicide, Joe made it back to his family, but only for a while. He was arrested in 2012 after he was pulled over for anoth-

er traffic infraction. This time, the charge was more serious because he’d already been deported. For months, he languished in a detention cell in Youngstown, awaiting his fate. On the day of his court hearing, Feb. 28, 2013, his wife of 20 years called Dahlberg.

“I could barely understand her at first,” Dahlberg said. “She was so upset.”

Joe had hanged himself in his cell.

He was 40 years old.

Days after he died, Joe’s family – including his parents – and friends and colleagues gathered at a local funeral home to say goodbye. His death notice described him as a man who read the Bible every day and who tried to live his life by its teachings.

“His greatest joy,” it read, “came from being with his family.”

He is buried next to his daughter, Emma, in the small American town where he once dared to believe that his family would be safe.

On Tuesday morning, less than an hour after U.S. officials deported Guadalupe Olivas Valencia to Mexico, the 45-year-old man leaped to his death from a bridge that connects our two countries.

BBC News reported witnesses describing Olivas as distressed and saying he shouted that he did not want to return to Mexico before he jumped.

He was from Sinaloa, one of the most violent states in the country.

If you’re inclined to point to Olivas’ three attempts to live here illegally as evidence of his unwillingness to follow the rules, consider recasting the indictment as a question: Why would this man have tried three times to escape Mexico?

As of Tuesday afternoon, we still knew little about Guadalupe Olivas Valencia beyond the circumstances of his death. But anyone paying attention to the news and capable of even a whisper of empathy knows there is more to his story. It is not difficult to imagine his death as a harbinger of more tragedies to come.

Olivas died on the same day the Department of Homeland Security released sweeping new guidelines that will most likely target for deportation millions more undocumented immigrants living in the United States. No

World Day of Prayer service planned DAILY CHRONICLE Women, men and children in more than 170 countries and regions will celebrate World Day of Prayer on March 3.

World Day of Prayer is a worldwide ecumenical movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year on the first Friday in March. World Day of Prayer was founded on the idea that prayer and action are inseparable in the service

of God’s kingdom. Services begin at sunrise in the Pacific and follow the sun across the globe on the day of celebration.

Each year a different country’s committee serves as the writers of the World Day of Prayer worship service.

This year, the women of the WDP Committee of the Philippines call people to worship considering the words: “Am I being unfair to you?” With these words as backdrop, people are invited to learn about the Philippines’ history and rich cultural diversity.

The women of the Philippines will share their stories of intergenerational wisdom, traditions and experiences of God’s profound love and acceptance.

The focus is on Matthew 20:1-16, the parable of the laborers in the vineyard. The Bible study and worship service invite attendees to explore concepts of economic justice both in the Filipino context and around the world, and our response in light of God’s generosity.

This year’s service will be at 10 a.m. March 3 at The Salvation Army

Boy Scout Troop 2810, chartered out of Salem Lutheran Church in Sycamore, recently had a campout at Lowden State Park in Oregon, Ill. After many of the Scouts had braved tent camping the month before to earn their Polar Bear merit badge, cabin camping was a welcome change. Despite the muddy conditions, the Scouts had a good time making hearty meals, playing card games and participating in the annual bingo/gift exchange.

The Federated Church in Sycamore will begin the Lenten season with its traditional Ash Wednesday Soup Supper and Service at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The community is invited to join the congregation in a light supper including a variety of homemade soups to begin this important segment of the church calendar. At about 7 p.m., the Rev. Dennis Johnson will lead a short worship service.

The church season of Lent, the 40-day period (excluding Sundays) preceding Easter, is marked by a time of prayer and preparation for the Easter celebration. The 40 days represent the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness preparing for his ministry. Just as Jesus faced many temptations during this time, Christians use the Lenten season as a time for introspection, self-examination and repentance.

ADN is the official honor society of the National Organization for Associ-

Oaken Acres Wildlife Center, a wildlife rehabilitation center founded in 1984, takes in about 600 patients a year primarily from DeKalb County. These patients come to the center injured or orphaned and can take countless hours of care for the days, weeks or even months they reside at the center.

The busiest season for Oaken Acres Wildlife Center is the time referred to as “baby season.” The majority of wild animals give birth to and raise young in the spring and early summer.

From the months of May through July, Oaken Acres is teeming with infant and juvenile wildlife. Besides the direct care of these animals, staff also is busy answering hundreds of phone calls from the public.

Volunteers and interns are welcome into Oaken Acres for the approximately three-month baby season.

They generally begin in early May, and conclude their work in late July, pending the amount of patients received. Volunteers and interns work hands-on with wildlife and are able to expand their skills and knowledge while helping to save lives. All volunteers and interns are required to be 18 years or older, have health insurance and a current tetanus vaccination by their start date.

All positions are unpaid and individuals must provide their own transportation and housing.

A limited number of internships are allotted annually and recipients are chosen based on resume, references, interview and availability. Interns are required to commit to three to four shifts a week at six hours a shift.

Each intern documents their education through a weekly journal and individual project to explore their greatest interests in the field of wildlife rehabilitation.

Priority is given to interns that submit their application materials by March 15.

MAPLE PARK – Having already come back once from eight down in the second half, a second comeback wasn’t in the cards for the Kaneland girls basketball team in a season-ending 55-51 loss to Stillman Valley in the championship game of the Class 3A Kaneland Sectional on Saturday.

“I thought I saw our pride and our passion in the game of basketball,” said senior guard Morgan Weber, who scored six points for the Knights. “I saw our family come together and push until the end of the game. I thought the comeback was good, we just fell short.”

The Cardinals (23-9) had a 49-40 lead with 1:53 left, but the Knights (23-6) cut it to three and had the ball in the final 20 seconds. Kaneland sophomore Hannah Armin, who sparked the team to a big lead in the first quarter, missed a 3, then Stillman Valley’s Grace Timm converted a free throw at the other end to push the lead to 53-49.

The Knights got the lead back to three and forced a miss by the Cardinals, but Anna Broski got the offensive rebound – 6-foot-3 center Macy Weaver had fouled out on the previous possession – and made two free throws with 7.6 seconds left to ice the win.

“We got rattled a few times,” Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said. “We tried to shut down [Weaver], and I’m really proud of the kids. But their kids made plays. They had a couple kids step up and make shots, and they needed to because we were guarding [Weaver] so much.”

Stillman Valley rattled off eight straight points in the third quarter to build a 36-28 lead, but the Knights battled back to tie it at 40 with 5:10 left in the fourth on a free throw by Weber.

But the Knights went cold, missing some layups and committing two of their 11 turnovers in the game during what would become a 9-0 run by Stillman Valley.

Weaver, an Arkansas commit who finished with nine points, 16 rebounds and five blocks, picked up her fourth foul with 6:09 left but was back a minute later after Kaneland tied the game.

“I wanted to wait until about that 3:30 mark, but that’s just the way the flow of the game went,” Stillman Valley coach Bobby Mellon said. “Momentum was going back to their side, and I wanted to make sure. We needed that person in there.”

Kaneland trailed, 11-9, in the first when Armin went off, scoring eight straight to kick off a 10-0 Kaneland run.

Weber – who scored a career-high 32 against Rock Falls in the semifinal Tuesday – said she was happy with the way Armin came up with the big shots, including a pair big 3-pointers in the first quarter. She finished with a team-

high 16.

“She stepped up as a sophomore,” Weber said. “They were guarding me pretty hard. She stepped up. I’m really happy. She’ll keep working hard and be a big player for the next couple seasons.”

The season ended for the Knights with their deepest playoff run in five years, and Colombe said with just one senior on the roster, he has high hopes for next year.

“We had eight sophomores and a freshman dressing for us tonight, and hopefully they got a taste of this and want to come back,” Colombe said.

Weber, the one Kaneland senior, agreed that this could just be the start of something for the program.

“This was probably one of the best teams I’ve ever been on,” Weber said.

“They’re going to work hard and go far next year too.”

By the numbers: With Kaneland focused on Weaver, Stillman Valley’s Alexa Ballard shot 6 for 6 from the floor

and scored a game-high 17 points to go with six rebounds. Anna Broski added 10. For Kaneland, Weber had a teamhigh seven rebounds. Jamie Martens finished with 13 points, and she drew a couple of fouls on Weaver with her slashes to the lane. Jenni Weber added 10.

Beyond the stats: Kaneland was the second No. 1 seed the Cardinals beat on its home court in the postseason – they beat Rockford Lutheran at its regional for the title last week.

They said it: “We were down to Lutheran by almost double digits, and Sycamore on Monday, that was eight points or so,” Mellon said. “They never count themselves out. They have this mentality that no matter what happens, if we stick together we can pull it out.

And as a coach there’s nothing better.”

Up next: The Cardinals advance to the Class 3A Bureau Valley Supersectional to face Morton, a 58-42 winner against Normal University on Thursday. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. Monday.

Faivre provides spark off bench for Timberwolves

jseverson@shawmedia.com SHABBONA – As he’s done for most of the season, Louis Faivre started the game on the bench for the Indian Creek boys basketball team on Wednesday.

As he’s done for most of the season, the junior guard spent crunch time on the floor and helped the Timberwolves close out a win.

The No. 3 Timberwolves advanced to the Class 1A Indian Creek Regional championship at 7 p.m. Friday against No. 2 seed DePue thanks in part to critical plays that Faivre made on both ends in the closing minutes of their win on Wednesday over Ashton-Franklin Center.

“I just try to give what the team needs, whether that’s scoring or defense or whatever the team needs that night,” Faivre said of his role on the team. “(On Wednesday) when we only scored 40some points, it’s more scoring. If we’re scoring in the 60s, it’s more defense and rebounding. It just depends on the score and the opponent and the scouting report and what coach tells me to do.”

Faivre, who Indian Creek coach Joe Piekarz called the team’s “sixth starter,” finished with 10 points in the Timberwolves’ 48-45 win over No. 7 seed Ashton-Franklin Center on Wednesday in Shabbona. With the Timberwolves trailing, 4237, and struggling offensively midway through the fourth quarter of a game that featured 12 lead changes, Faivre connected on a hard-driving layup that ended Indian Creek’s scoreless stretch of nearly 3½ minutes.

“He can create,” Piekarz said. “When he plays good offense like that, that’s when our offense is clicking.”

After a basket by Indian Creek big man Nolan Govig cut the deficit to one, Faivre jumped the passing lane on the right wing and turned it into a threepoint play that gave the Timberwolves the lead for good.

Faivre, who flexed and screamed after making the layup despite being fouled, had a rough start to the game against Ashton-Franklin Center. Play-

ing in his first pressure-packed regional game, he missed his first four shots – including multiple layups – and his first two free throws.

However, he calmed down with five points in the second quarter, coming on two free throws and another three-point play off a steal that gave them the lead – this one putting them ahead, 21-19, with less than two minutes to go in the period.

“It was my first competitive regional game, so I was definitely nervous going in,” said Faivre, whose Timberwolves cruised to a 65-29 win over winless Paw Paw in the first round. “Missed a few free throws and botched a layup, but I just had to get comfortable. It just takes a minute or two to get the flow of the game.”

Piekarz said coming into the season, he knew the Timberwolves (24-5) had six players who could potentially be starters and they toyed around with different lineups to start the year. Faivre even got a few starts in the beginning of the season, before Piekarz said that the junior guard’s energy off the bench made the Timberwolves a much tougher team to face.

“He’s probably our most outwardly passionate player on the court,” Piekarz said. “He really shows his emotion on the court, so somebody like him coming off the bench can give us that immediate spark that we’re looking for.”

While Faivre was a point guard in the past, he moved over to an off-guard be-

cause of the presence of star senior guard Trevor Guerra, who leads the team in scoring and is the Timberwolves’ most dynamic offensive threat. On the season, Faivre is averaging 8.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists a game and is shooting 50 percent from the floor. In a 61-53 win against West Carroll on Dec. 3, he had a season-high 19 points while the Timberwolves were in foul trouble.

Faivre said the Timberwolves are confident – but not too confident – heading into their regional title matchup against No. 2 seed DePue. Both teams are coming off games in which they needed to hold on late to survive with a victory against a lesser seed. The Little Giants (25-3) hung on for a 47-41 win over No. 10 Amboy in their semifinal matchup Wednesday.

With the winner of Friday’s game heading to the Class 1A Somonauk Sectional semifinals next week, Piekarz said how the teams’ games went on Wednesday is essentially irrelevant.

“I’m not a big momentum person,” Piekarz said. “Friday, nobody is going to care what DePue and us did here (on Wednesday). The only thing people are going to care about when the ball is tipped up is how we play on Friday, so we’re going to play solid basketball on Friday. Nothing that happened (on Wednesday) is going to carry over one way or another. We could have won by 40 or by three, we just have to play good basketball on Friday.”

Gibson, McDermott shipped to Thunder for 3 players

jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – The Bulls’ front office swears it has a plan.

With the 2 p.m. trade deadline ticking down Thursday, the Bulls agreed to deal Taj Gibson, Doug McDermott and a 2018 second-round pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder for point guard Cameron Payne, big man Joffrey Lauvergne and forward Anthony Morrow.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Butler stayed, despite the Boston Celtics’ efforts to pry the three-time All-Star from the grips of vice president of basketball operations John Paxson and general manager Gar Forman.

The Sun-Times has reported since the draft in June that while the Bulls were open to taking calls on Butler, they never were shopping him. According to a

source, that remained true during the 48 hours leading up to the deadline, with the Bulls asking for the world from the Celtics. That included multiple picks and core Taj Gibson players, which would have crippled the team’s foundation.

Paxson downplayed the offers for Butler, and he wouldn’t commit to the two-way standout for the long term.

Doug “Right now, today, McDermott Jimmy is on our roster,” Paxson said. “This league is fluid, and things can change quickly.

“I’ve always felt this way about team building and a team in general: There are very few guys who you build around.

This is a team game. You build with players. We are building with Jimmy right now. Maybe outside of a handful of guys who ever played this game, you build with players, not around one.”

That’s where Payne – who was the 14th overall pick in the 2015 draft – comes in, according to Paxson. The 22-year-old played behind MVP candidate Russell Westbrook the past two seasons, so minutes were hard to come by. But even so, there were some red flags with the 6-foot3 playmaker coming out of Murray State.

The knock on him by several scouts was he was quick “but not real athletic.” He has been an inconsistent outside shooter in the NBA (32 percent on 3-point shots), and he has broken his foot twice.

So why the head-scratching?

The Bulls’ best 3-point shooter was McDermott, who was hitting 37 percent from the outside this season and 39 per-

cent for his career. Coincidentally, they gave up two first-round picks to acquire McDermott in the 2014 draft.

The other concern with this deal is the loss up front. The Bulls’ strength was the physical play of the frontline with Gibson and Robin Lopez. The Bulls somewhat lessened that by removing Gibson. Yes, he has an expiring contract, but he always played the good soldier and was open to returning to the Bulls in free agency. More importantly, Gibson helped establish what remained of a dwindling culture.

Morrow and Lauvergne can be free agents this summer, so the Bulls can at least take that money off the books.

But for the immediate future, with Gibson out of the picture, Bobby Portis and Nikola Mirotic will compete for minutes. Neither has shown he can be a consistent NBA starter.

“There’s no doubt that our puck control is there, but I think that comes from better defensive play,” Toews said. “The last little while, all four lines are contributing, we’re all checking a lot better, our forwards are coming back and helping our ‘D’ out. I think when you do that you can really turn plays around and play in the offensive zone a lot more.

If you’re playing well on that side of the puck, then your puck control just kind of comes.”

No line has seen a bigger surge in offensive-zone time than Toews’ line.

“We’re playing with a ton of confidence because we have the puck a lot,” he said. “You’re not afraid to make a mistake or give up the puck if you know you’re going to get it back right away. If you’re chasing it around all night and you don’t have it, then when you finally get it, you kind of put pressure on yourself to make the right plays and not make mistakes. It’s probably the case for the rest of our team right now.”

The top line’s emergence also takes pressure off Kane’s line to produce, and forces opponents to pick their poison with their shutdown line. It all adds up to more puck control, more scoring chances, and more wins.

Rasmussen enjoys sharing 3rd line with Hossa, Kruger

mlazerus@suntimes.com For more than a year, the so-called “lottery” spot in the Blackhawks lineup has been the top-line left-wing slot – a chance to play alongside Jonathan Toews – which Nick Schmaltz finally has nailed down, for now.

But for a player such as Dennis Rasmussen, a defensive-minded grinder, you can’t do much better than playing on the same line as Marian Hossa and Marcus Kruger, two of the very best defensive players in the game.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Rasmussen said of the Hawks’ third line. “They’re really smart and they work the system really well. We work hard, and make it pretty tough for [opposing defensemen] when we’re on the ice, because we’re going to forecheck hard and we’re going to probably win a lot of pucks. It’s going to be a tough line to pay against.”

Rasmussen knew Hossa was good.

Everyone knows that Hossa is good.

But as nearly every player who has played alongside him well attest, you don’t really know until you play on the same line as him. The past few weeks, nearly every shift has been an invaluable educational experience.

“You notice a lot of things,” Rasmussen said. “He’s so strong on the puck. And he’s always there to help you – he’s talking on the ice, he always wants the puck, and he’s really fast and he’s just got everything. So all the things that you see, you try to use yourself, too, even if you’re not [at his level] yet. Whatever you want to improve, you can just look at him.”

Kruger historically has been pegged in a pure shutdown role, and the line is still getting largely defensive-zone starts. But Hossa’s presence gives the line much more offensive bite. With Rasmussen and Kruger forechecking down low and Hossa winning pucks and crashing the net, the goal isn’t just to get the puck back – it’s to do something with it, as well.

“Hopefully, we can create some offense, too, even if we’re playing against the other teams’ top lines and taking a lot of defensive-zone draws,” Rasmussen said. “We’re trying to sustain some zone time and create chances. We don’t want to just think about defense.”

Deadline talk: Two possible trade targets were on the ice at the United Center on Thursday – Arizona center Martin Hanzal and winger Radim Vrbata. Hawks general Stan Bowman has suggested he might stand pat at the deadline and allow the young players on the roster to continue to play major roles. But if he makes a deal, Joel Quenneville isn’t too concerned about it disrupting the chemistry of a team that has had very little roster movement throughout the season.

“One thing about chemistry with our group, our core has been through a number of different teammates and different [times] when new guys come aboard,” Quenneville said. “I think

it’s an easy group to fit in, knowing what the purpose is and what the opportunity is. Especially at this time of the year, it’s a great place to play, a great environment here. Fans here are spectacular. So I think the excitement of coming here, I don’t think that’s an issue. And I think fitting in with our guys, that’s not going to be an issue.”

Planning ahead: The Hawks signed Rockford IceHogs goaltender Jeff Glass to a two-year contract that runs through next season. That fulfills the requirement to have a qualified goaltender under contract to expose in the expansion draft after the season. All teams must have two forwards, one defenseman and one goalie exposed that meet the various criteria for the expansion draft. Corey Crawford has a no-movement clause and is automatically protected, Scott Darling will be an unrestricted free agent, and Mac Carruth is a restricted free agent who may or may not receive a qualifying offer (the requirement for exposure).

The Blackhawks are starting to look like the Blackhawks again.

They have a top line again, with Nick Schmaltz and Richard Panik providing needed stability and playmaking ability for Jonathan Toews. They have a fourline rotation again, with Marian Hossa bolstering the bottom six and Tanner Kero providing depth down the middle.

And more than anything, they have the puck again. A lot.

After chasing the puck for much of the past season and a half, the Hawks are starting to regain control.

“We were very inconsistent early [in the season] and we were defending way more than we were accustomed to,” coach Joel Quenneville said. “You’re vulnerable for penalties, you’re vulnerable for quality scoring chances against, and [you’re] not generating enough. I think that’s the progression in our game now. It seems like all four lines are having the puck and having some zone time and having some rush chances. It seems like every line’s contributing, and that’s the big difference.”

The 6-3 win Thursday night over the Arizona Coyotes certainly wasn’t the cleanest game the Hawks have played in

Patrick Kane scored three goals – the Hawks’ second hat trick in as many games, coming after Toews’ in Minnesota. The top line stayed red-hot, with Schmaltz (on his 21st birthday) posting a goal and an assist, and Toews adding two assists. And fourth-liners Ryan Hartman (goal and assist) and Tanner Kero (assist) chipped in, as well. An off night defensively and for Corey Crawford (who gave up three goals on the first nine shots he faced) made it tougher than it needed to be against the lowly Coyotes, but it was another victory nonetheless.

The Hawks didn’t own the puck the way they have been recently, but the numbers back Quenneville up. There’s been no greater predictor of postseason success in recent seasons than puck-possession proxies, such as Corsi, which measures shot attempts. From 2009 to ’14, the Hawks never finished worse than sixth in the league in Corsi, and won three Stanley Cups in the AP photo process. Last season, they were 15th in Patrick Kane celebrates his goal against the league, taking only 50.65 percent of the Arizona Coyotes during the third period the total shot attempts. This season, at the All-Star break, they were still 15th, at Thursday at the United Center.

SPORTS BRIEFS Hamlin spoils Earnhardt return with last-lap pass for win

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Denny Hamlin charged past Dale Earnhardt Jr. with one lap remaining Thursday night to win the second 150-mile qualifying race at Daytona International Speedway.

Earnhardt actually dominated but couldn’t hold off Hamlin at the end.

Hamlin, the defending Daytona 500 winner, has won a Duel qualifying race three times in his career.

The twin 150-mile races were used to set the field for Sunday’s season-opener.

Chase Elliott won the first qualifier.

But he had already earned the top starting spot for Sunday’s race based on speed.

AP source: Williams headed to Cavaliers after Mavs waiver

The Dallas Mavericks waived Deron Williams on Thursday, and the five-time All-Star is now looking to join the Cavaliers as they pursue a second straight championship, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Williams has to clear waivers before signing with Cleveland.

Williams averaged 13.1 points and 6.9 assists for the Mavericks this season.

The 32-year-old is in his 12th season and loved playing in Dallas. But the Mavericks sit in 12th in the Western Conference.

Almora shows off baseball IQ

Almora, the current Cubs regime’s first draft pick, in 2012, made his major-league debut last June before going back to Triple-A Iowa for more seasoning. He came back in September, and the Cubs thought enough of him to make him part of the postseason roster, mainly for his outfield defense, which can best be described as authoritative.

The Cubs’ Albert Almora Jr. is a baseball IQ prodigy.

Look no further than Game 7 of the 2016 World Series at Cleveland’s Progressive Field. Kyle Schwarber led off the 10th inning with a single and was replaced as a pinch runner by Almora, a 22-year-old rookie who had all of 47 games of regular-season major-league experience entering the postseason.

The next batter, Kris Bryant, flied out to deep center field. Instead of going halfway down the baseline, Almora tagged up at first and advanced to second after the catch. That’s a veteran move, not a rookie move.

After the Indians walked Anthony Rizzo intentionally, Ben Zobrist doubled to left field to score Almora, and the Cubs went on to a thrilling 8-7 win.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The White Sox announced Thursday that they will retire Mark Buehrle’s No. 56 jersey June 24 during a special tribute before their game against the Athletics.

One of the most popular and successful Sox, the left-hander will be the 11th player, along with Jackie Robinson, to have his number retired.

“Mark Buehrle is one of the most accomplished pitchers in franchise history,” chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement. “Mark carried himself with class and professionalism throughout his career, and his popularity with staff, teammates and Sox fans is very well deserved.”

Drafted by the Sox in the 38th round in 1998, Buehrle made his debut in 2000 and went on to become a four-time AllStar, three-time Gold Glove winner and World Series champion. Over his career with the Sox, he went 161-119 with a 3.83 ERA and 27 complete games in 365 starts.

Buehrle ranks fourth among franchise leaders in strikeouts, starts and

quality starts and is sixth in wins. After the Sox did not re-sign him in 2011, Buehrle signed a four-year, $58 million deal with the Marlins, pitched one season in Miami and three in Toronto. He led the American League in complete games in his last season.

Buehrle quite possibly ranks as pitching coach Don Cooper’s favorite pitcher he has worked with. Buehrle worked fast and excelled with an upper 80s fastball.

“He did it first by location; second, movement; three, changing speeds,” Cooper said. “And nothing bothered him.”

Buehrle made four appearances, including three starts, for the 2005 Sox World Series champs in the playoffs.

“Mark is one of my favorite people, and that is saying a lot,” said Ozzie Guillen, manager of the 2005 team. “He was the best teammate ever. Everyone loved this man. Everyone.”

Buehrle earned a save in Game 3 of the Fall Classic. He hurled the 16th no-hitter in club history on April 18, 2007, against the Rangers, and the franchise’s second perfect game on July 23, 2009, against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Fewer carbs combats fatty liver Dear Doctor: I recently was diagnosed with fatty liver. I researched it a bit, and learned that people with this condition can have a pregnant-looking stomach. Although I’ve been considered slim my whole life, for the last eight or nine years I’ve looked about six months pregnant. Please tell me how I can reverse this and quit wearing maternity clothes.

Dear Reader: Fatty liver, officially called hepatic steatosis, is the most common liver disorder in Western industrialized countries, with rates increasing over the last 40 years in step with the rates of obesity. In fact, a 2004 population-based study that imaged the livers of 2,287 people in Dallas, Texas, found fatty liver in 34 percent of the population.

The issue you’re having with fatty liver is shared by a large percentage of Americans.

To understand how this happened, and why the rates of diabetes, obesity and fatty liver have increased over the last 40 years, just visit a supermarket. There you’ll find aisle after aisle of high-carbohydrate, high-sugar processed foods. High-sugar foods such as cookies, candies, cakes, ice cream, sodas and juices raise both insulin and triglyceride levels. So do highly refined carbohydrates such as crackers, potato chips, low-fiber breads, rice and pasta. Processed foods often contain large amounts of both sugar and refined carbohydrates. All these foods are easily converted to fat in the body, and when there’s too much fat, it starts to build up in the liver.

That can cause an inflammatory reaction that leads to scarring.

Most people have no symptoms of fatty liver; only rarely do patients have related fatigue or stomach fullness. Your doctor may want to investigate whether the weight gain in your abdomen is not simply related to increased fat distribution in that area of your body. You can try to reverse the condition – and your weight gain – by reducing the amount of sugars and carbohydrates you consume.

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley A review of four studies published last year in the Journal of Research in Medical Sciences found reducing the amount of dietary carbohydrates to 50 percent or less of total calorie intake successfully led to a decrease in liver fat content. Other research, specifically a 2004 study published in the journal Digestive Diseases and Sciences, looked at obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Researchers found people whose carbohydrate intake was greater than 54 percent of their total calories were six-and-a-half times more likely to have liver inflammation compared to those for whom carbohydrates made up less than 35 percent of their total calories. What was interesting about this study was those who ate a high-fat diet had lower rates of inflammation in the liver. This runs counter to the long-held belief that dietary fat causes people to develop more fat in the body and the liver.

To change your diet, start with sugar.

By that I mean eliminate high-sugar foods from your diet -- completely. That means no dessert, no sodas, no juices. High-sugar foods are pervasive within our society, and it takes a daily determination to not consume them, especially when they are a normal portion of our American diet. Also, reduce carbohydrates that are low in fiber. They can create many of the same problems found with high-sugar foods. And last but not least, start an exercise regimen – or ramp up the one you have. It will help you work off extra calories, while also helping you control your body’s ability to control glucose levels.
