Zweifels may be last but not bothered in the least DeKALB COUNTY LIFE Barry Schrader Most people relish being first, but the Zweifel family holds a special place at the end of the Frontier phone book alphabetically.

And they don’t mind being there one bit. Jeff and Erin, plus their kids Hunter, a sophomore at Genoa-Kingston High School, and twins Jessica and Aidan, middle-schoolers in Genoa, have lived in that community since moving from Lake in the Hills in 2002. Erin said they wanted to raise their family in a smaller town and have found Genoa ideal for that.

I looked the Zweifels up in the new phone book, initially with the idea of interviewing the first and last families, but the first person whose name begins with an A declined. I found the Zweifels a delightful and interesting family to visit, so can easily fill a column with their story.

Erin works for a doctor in Elgin, and Jeff works at the DeKalb Park District. When he held up the phone book for me to take their photo, he commented that the front cover showing the old water tower at the Ellwood House was meaningful to him because he has worked on the wall and gate next to it. What a coincidence – the front cover and the last name in the book.

Zweifel is a German name. Erin said the priest who married them explained it meant “doubtful” in that language. Since they have been happily married for 19 years, there is nothing doubtful about their union.

Chatting with their children, I explained my ties to the Cogs. I am a proud 1958 graduate of GKHS, spending four years in the school building where their middle school is now.

Hunter plays football, basketball and baseball for the Cogs. I was team manger for all three sports under coach Harry Henigan. I didn’t ask Hunter if he was in the Letterman’s Club, something coveted by every athlete who went to G-K. The twins have extracurricular pursuits I never enjoyed in school – Jessica is active in the Art Club and Aidan is in the Tech Club. We didn’t have art in our day (except finger paint-

Not every boy took that class, but typing has served me well for more than 50 years now. I should also have taken her shorthand class, as my note-taking is dreadful.

When I walked into their living room I noticed three mounted deer heads on the wall, including a 12-point mounted buck that is the pride of Jeff, who takes his sons to Wisconsin each fall during whitetail deer season. He said they also do some bowhunting and fishing.

This is a fond recollection for me as I had almost identical interests during my growing-up years. So it was gratifying to spend a Sunday afternoon getting acquainted with the Zweifels.

I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did.

Committee agrees to hold 2nd hearing for wind testing towers

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Planning and Zoning Committee agreed Wednesday to hold a second public hearing on whether to build two 200-foot-tall wind testing towers after the first hearing was criticized for being held in too small a venue and not giving enough public notice.

A special-use permit was requested

by San Diego-based EDF Renewable Energy to build the towers in South Grove Township south of Kirkland.

The towers will measure wind speed and direction to determine whether the conditions are favorable to build wind turbines in that area.

The proposal received significant backlash during a public hearing last month from residents who were critical of the effect a wind farm would have on property values and how much of a nuisance it would be.

“It’s tough to sell property around windmills,” said Cindy Brown, who owns property in South Grove Township. “Voters entrust County Board officers to look out for their livelihood and preserve their lifestyle.”

Property owners in the area also were upset they didn’t receive proper notification of the hearing and that it was held in a small conference room at the DeKalb County Legislative Center in Sycamore, which could not accommodate the number of attendees.

Based on these concerns, DeKalb County Board President Mark Pietrowski made a motion to hold a second public hearing in a larger facility at a time when people are off work.

Pietrowski said the meeting likely would be in three weeks to a month, and people affected by wind towers or a potential wind farm would be notified when an exact date and time were selected.

EDF Development Director P.J. Saliterman said the additional meeting would not have any effect on the company’s plans to move forward with the meteorological towers.

Once the second hearing takes place, the Planning and Zoning Committee will rule on whether to recommend the towers’ construction to the County Board.

The towers would be hundreds of feet away from any nearby building and would remain up for about 12 months. However, they would remain in place for another 18 months should

a wind farm be approved on the property.

DeKalb County does not have an adopted ordinance regarding wind farms. A wind farm built in 2009 in Afton, Clinton, Milan and Shabbona townships was under a special-use permit with specific criteria it had to follow.

Saliterman said this provides an unusual approach to EDF’s proposal.

In anticipation of a wind farm being developed from this proposal or others to follow, the board also agreed to put a moratorium in place on sustainable energy sources until a proper ordinance can be approved by the County Board.

Jones said that some of the steps in drafting an ordinance would be to conduct listening sessions with the public to gain their input and investigate other wind farms and existing

ordinances in other counties.

“Now is the time to do this before we have another wind farm on our land,” Jones said.

He added that he was concerned about finding information within the county, as numerous people affected by the wind turbines already in place cannot comment on the farm because of a settlement agreement reached with NextEra Energy, who built the windmills.

Because Jones lives in the region that could be affected by wind turbines, he abstained from voting on the decision to hold a second hearing for the testing towers after speaking with the state’s attorney. He added that he was able to vote on the proposed energy ordinance.

The moratorium is expected to be heard at the next County Board meeting March 15.

Job fairs in DeKalb attract candidates

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Thomas Reneau, a talent brand specialist with Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers, traveled from France to promote sales internships his company offers at the Northern Illinois University Career Fair.

Reneau said his firm’s search wasn’t about educational experience as much as it was finding passionate people who can connect with companies in agriculture, construction, transportation and other industries.

“We want to create career paths for internal talent and provide the tools for self-motivated people who want to be ambassadors to our organization,” said Erica Penley of Ritchie Brothers’ Chicago location, who accompanied Reneau.

Wednesday was a good day to look for a job in DeKalb.

Representatives of more than 200 businesses were in attendance at NIU’s Convocation Center, including nonprofit groups such as Baxter Credit Union and government agencies such as the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services.

Elsewhere, about 15 other employers were set up at a community job fair in the Community Outreach Building at 2500 N. Annie Glidden Road.

More than 200 employers visited the Convocation Center for a job fair Wednesday at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

Jeff Kloweit, a recruiter with the Rockford Fire Department, said he has seen people with theater backgrounds, former lawyers and master’s degree recipients all looking to become firefighters.

“When we see someone educated, it’s a good quality, which makes a good employee,” Kloweit said.

“We’re trying to reach students upon entering NIU,” Lagana said. “We want to help them through career counseling and career decision-making to get them prepared and provide a hiring mechanism.

ful for employers. By networking during last semester’s job fair, he also was able to submit applications with employers during the spring fair.

David Vincent, a business administration major set to graduate in the spring, said that he feels he is in a good position to find work upon graduating but would have liked to have used career services to gain more preparation for entering the workforce.

Scheduled at the same time as the NIU fair, the community job fair showcased opportunities from local employers.

Jen Stark, director of community relations at Momentum Healthcare, said she was looking for registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and individuals for housekeeping and dietary roles.

“A lot of staff come in as new graduates, and it’s a good stepping point for them, as some have the goal of ending up in a hospital setting,” Stark said. “Customer service is important to the long-term experience, as you don’t have the same patient twice.”

Silgan Containers spokeswoman Monica Bottom, who was looking for industrial electricians and general laborers, said difficulties in hiring qualified candidates might be because people are telling young adults that manufacturing is not a good industry to begin a career with, which can affect her hiring.

Michael A. Carey, 63, of Kirkland died Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at Kishwaukee Hospital.

He was born August 6, 1953 in Mineral Wells, TX, the son of Rodman and Maxine (McKeever) Carey. He married Kathleen Jahns on June 10, 2005. Michael worked in Aviation Maintenance for many years. He was a FAA Designated Inspector and a DAR Import/Export of Aircraft and Parts. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion and the Barbed Wire Hog Chapter.

He enjoyed riding motorcycles, boating, flying planes and working on anything with motors. His biggest joy of life was spending time with his family, especially with his grandsons.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; two children, Melissa (Tim) Davenport and Mikey Carey; two step-children, Amanda (Steve) Meisch and Greg (Kelly Bolander) Jahns; his grandchildren, Sydney, Corinne, Colin, Trenton and Cole; his parents, Rodman and Maxine Carey; two brothers, Steve (Liz) Carey and Phillip (Koji Kainuma) Carey; a niece, Aylin (James) Marquez and a nephew, Ray Barth; and three great nieces, Madison, Aliye and Nilay.

He was preceded in death by his niece, Rachel Carey.

His Visitation will be on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Butala Funeral Home and Crematory, 1405 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, IL. 60178. His Funeral Service will be on Saturday, Feb. 25th at 11:00 AM at the Funeral Home, with Rev. Joseph Gastiger officiating.

Marilyn Joan Carlson Sinn, age 74, of Algonquin, Illinois, passed away on February 18, 2017 surrounded by family.

She was born on November 17, 1942 in Oak Park, Illinois to Marjorie and Palmer Carlson.

She grew up in Schaumburg and Palatine, attending a one-room schoolhouse – Schaumburg Center School – and later, Palatine High School. Marilyn worked for Pure Oil Company in downtown Chicago. She married Gerald Sinn, and together they lived in the Algonquin area for over 50 years. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2014.

She is survived by her children, Jana and Greg; her husband, Gerald; and her brother, Ken. Marilyn enjoyed travel, the outdoors and any new experiences. She competed in archery, winning several awards. She was an active Algonquin Jaycee-ette for several years, excelled in bowling and had a passion for swimming, kayaking, camping, skiing and was a talented artist. Marilyn always put her family first, supporting her children’s endeavors. This smart and spirited lady with a clever sense of humor will be dearly missed.

SYCAMORE – Two people were in custody Wednesday on drug-induced homicide charges in connection with the November death of a 30-year-old DeKalb man at a Sycamore hotel.

Bond was set at $500,000 in DeKalb County court Wednesday for Nicole H. Minchuk, 34, of the 2100 block of Fairland Drive, Sycamore. Nicole H. Minchuk is accused of Minchuk selling cocaine to Joseph A. Ybarra of DeKalb.

She remained in the DeKalb County Jail on Wednesday evening and will have to post $50,000 bail to be released.

Police also arrested Rashaun O. Jefferson, Rashaun O. 23, of the 3300 block of Jefferson Sunnyside Avenue in Rockford. Police allege that Jefferson sold Ybarra heroin before Ybarra’s death.

Jefferson was being held in the Winnebago County Jail on Wednesday afternoon, awaiting transfer to DeKalb County. He had not yet had a bond hearing.

If convicted of drug-induced homicide, Minchuk and Jefferson each

could face sentences of six to 30 years in prison. Extended sentencing is up to 60 years.

Sycamore police were called Nov. 21 to a hotel in the 1800 block of DeKalb Avenue, where Ybarra was unconscious in a room. A police investigation determined Minchuk and Jefferson played a part in his death by overdose, according to the release.

Police Chief Glenn Theriault said police have been investigating Ybarra’s death since the incident occurred.

“It takes some time to get medical and autopsy results,” he said. “Any time there is a death, we look to see if someone is criminally responsible.”

Minchuk faces other felony drug charges from an August arrest by DeKalb police, who found her in possession of a plastic bag of cocaine and another nine bags of crack cocaine in a car she was in. A man Minchuk was with at the time freely admitted to police that he was a crack dealer and was sentenced to eight years in prison.

Minchuk was released from jail Aug. 15 after posting $200 bail.

Theriault said drug addiction is an epidemic problem, not only nationally, but locally as well.

“It’s just a tragedy,” he said. “Far too many people are addicted, and we will keep trying to get people the help they need.”

Minchuk is next due in court March 17.

Fifties furniture is very popular with vintage collectors today, but some earlier Art Deco designs from the 1930s are not in demand. Look at old movies on television to study some of the stranger pieces. The look is sometimes called “Hollywood Deco” because the extravagant rooms with huge round mirrors and sofas were exaggerations of the modern furniture used in average homes. An unfamiliar cabinet was sold recently at a Garth’s auction. It was a flat, round cabinet on a base. When placed against a wall, it showed all of the 51-inch diameter of the cabinet and the glass doors and shelves waiting to display a collection. The plain solid base stretched beyond the rounded sides to give safe support for the top-heavy design. This type of cabinet was made in the 1930s, but most for sale today were made in England, not the U.S. Most have no maker’s name and the wood choice suggests it was not expensive when new. Some were oak or even mahogany, but many were made of laminate with grain painting. A cabinet like this sold at a Midwestern auction in 2016 for $450. A selection of similar round modernist curio cabinets found online had asking prices as high as $2,000, but most of these are in English shops and prices were cut to less than $500. *** Q: I bought an “Ascot on Oak” pattern dinner set three years ago from an antiques shop. It’s marked “Mason’s Patent Ironstone, Made in England, Ascot on Oak, Permanent Detergent Proof Decoration.” I was using this dinner set for meals, and recently it came to my attention that it could be leaking toxins from the material used to make the dishes. The set has quite a bit of crazing and I don’t use the coffeepot for fear of it breaking when hot coffee is in it. Is it safe to use for food and if so, is it wise for me to use the coffeepot?

A: We have never heard of toxins leaking out of ironstone. The words “detergent proof” were first used on dinnerware in about 1944, so your set meets 20-century standards. If the glaze is so severely crazed or cracked it could break off, or could not be properly cleaned, it would be best not to use the dish for food. There might be some bits of glassy glaze with sharp edges or imperfections that make adequate washing impossible. You can use the coffeepot if it has no internal crazing.

*** Q: I have a print titled “An Enemy in Camp” that shows a pair of barnyard ducks defending their brood of ducklings from the farmyard dog. It’s marked “James Lee Co. Chicago, Illinois” and dated 1906. I understand it’s a chromolithograph. It’s in excellent condition. What is it worth?

A: James Lee was born in England and emigrated to Canada before moving to the United States in 1892.

The James Lee Co. was in business in the early 1900s. It published postcards as well as prints in the early 1900s.

Chromolithography, a process of making colored prints, was developed in the early 1800s. It made inexpensive color art available and was popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, chromolithograph prints sell for about $40 to $70. *** Q: I have an old manual L.C. Smith typewriter. Can you tell me what it’s worth?

A: Most old typewriters are hard to sell, but some are wanted by collectors. The Early Typewriter Collectors’ Association (etconline.org) is a club and publication for collectors of old typewriters. L.C. Smith & Bros. Typewriter Co. was founded in 1903 by Lyman C. Smith and his three brothers in Syracuse, N.Y. The company’s first typewriter, model No. 2, was introduced in 1904, a year before No. 1 was offered for sale. The company merged with Corona Typewriter Co. in 1925 to become L.C. Smith & Corona Typewriter Co. To find the age of your typewriter, you need to know the serial number. L.C. Smith serial numbers and production dates are listed on The Typewriter Database (typewriterdatabase.com). We could have helped more if you had sent pictures of the typewriter and any marks. *** Q:I’d like some information about a pitcher and washbowl made by Edward Clarke. It’s marked on the bottom with two touching shields. The words “Edward Clarke, Tunstall, Trade Mark, Stone China” are above the shields and “Stone China” below.

A: Edward Clarke made earthenware and white ironstone at Phoenix Works in Tunstall, England, from about 1865 to 1877. That’s when your pitcher and washbowl were made. After that Edward Clarke worked at potteries in Longport and Burslem. Your pitcher and washbowl probably were part of a commode set that included a soap dish, chamber pot and other items. Before there was indoor plumbing, a commode set or chamber set was kept in the bedroom and emptied each morning. ***

In Orange County, California, dozens of immigrant parents have signed legal documents authorizing friends and relatives to pick up their children from school and access their bank accounts to pay their bills in the event they are arrested by immigration agents.

Illinois education board vote settles 2008 funding lawsuit

CHICAGO – The Illinois State Board of Education has voted to approve the settlement of a years-long lawsuit that claimed discriminatory school funding.

The board’s Wednesday vote resolves litigation with the Chicago Urban League, which claimed in its 2008 lawsuit that the state’s funding model had a “demonstrable, disparate and adverse impact” on minority students.

Under the settlement, the board agrees that if appropriations for schools are inadequate, it will cap per-pupil cuts or use another methodology to distribute funds.

That’s instead of “prorating” state aid dollars to schools when money is short.

Judge Bob Hardwick approved the order Tuesday in Curtis Lovelace’s case. “We got over 1,000 phone calls in three days about the raids,” said Cristina Parker, immigration programs director for Grassroots Leadership.

“And certainly a lot of those were people who wanted information about the raids saying, ‘I’m scared, I’m worried, what can I do?’... A lot of them were people who were impacted by the raids who saw a friend or family be taken.”

Immigrants in the Chicago area have said they are scared to drive, and some are even wary of taking public transit.

When Chicago police and federal authorities conducted regular safety checks on a train line earlier this month, many assumed it was an immigration checkpoint.

Word spread so quickly that Chicago police issued a statement assuring immigrants, “You are welcome here.”

Juvenile charged in South Elgin middle school beating

GENEVA – A 14-year-old suburban Chicago middle school student charged with beating a 12-year-old into unconsciousness was assigned a public defender and put on electronic home monitoring.

The boy who allegedly attacked Henry Sembdner on Feb. 3 was accompanied by his parents when he made his first appearance Tuesday before a Kane County juvenile court judge. In explaining the charges, Judge Clint Hull said the boy could face a punishment from court supervision to five years in juvenile detention if convicted.

Authorities said the 14-year-old boy allegedly body slammed Sembdner on Feb. 3, after Henry bumped into him between classes at Kenyon Woods Middle School in South Elgin. Sembdner was placed in a medically induced coma with head and facial fractures before returning home Feb. 7.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The man convicted of killing nine worshippers during Bible study at a black church in 2015 drove toward a second black parish afterward, according to federal court documents unsealed Tuesday, but no one was there because that sanctuary’s class had been canceled.

According to the documents, federal prosecutors said they had GPS evidence showing that after the fatal shootings at Charleston’s Emanuel AME church June 17, 2015, Dylann Roof exited the interstate and drove about 30 miles northwest toward the Branch AME Church in Summerville. The Branch church also had a sign advertising Bible study, the prosecutors said, and Roof shut off his GPS device, which they said indicated he stopped the car.

Oil pipeline opponents leave N.D. protest camp

CANNON BALL, N.D. – Most of the Dakota Access pipeline opponents abandoned their protest camp Wednesday ahead of a government deadline to get off the federal land, and authorities moved to arrest some who defied the order in a final show of dissent.

The camp has been home to demonstrators for nearly a year as they tried to thwart construction of the pipeline. Many of the protesters left peacefully, but police made some arrests two hours after the deadline.

Earlier in the day, some of the last remnants of the camp went up in flames when occupants set fire to makeshift wooden housing as part of a leaving ceremony. Authorities later said about 20 fires were set and two people – a 7-yearold boy and a 17-year-old girl – were taken to a Bismarck hospital to be treated for burns. Their conditions weren’t given.

After the deadline passed, as many as 75 people outside the camp started taunting officers, who brought five large vans to the scene. Police took about 10 people into custody for failing to heed commands to leave, authorities said.

With darkness falling, Lt. Tom Iverson said police would not enter the camp Wednesday evening, and he offered no timetable for doing so.

Levi Bachmeier, an adviser to Gov. Doug Burgum, said about 50 people remained in the camp at dusk.

Hours before, about 150 people marched armin-arm out of the soggy camp, singing and playing drums as they walked down a highway. It was not clear where they were headed. One man carried an American flag hung upside-down.

Authorities sent buses to take protesters to Bismarck, where they were offered fresh clothing, bus fares home and food and hotel vouchers.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers set the deadline, citing the threat of spring flooding.

At the height of the protests, the site known as Oceti Sakowin hosted thousands of people, although its population dwindled to just a couple of hundred as the pipeline battle moved into the courts.

The camp is on federal land in North Dakota between the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation and the pipeline route that is being finished by Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners. When complete, the project will carry oil through the Dakotas and Iowa to a shipping point in Illinois.

Some of the protesters were focused on moving off federal land and away from the flood plain into other camps, said Phyllis Young, one of the camp leaders.

“The camps will continue,” she said. “Freedom is in our DNA, and we have no choice but to continue the struggle.”

New camps are popping up on private land, including one the Cheyenne River Sioux set up about a mile from the main camp.

“A lot of our people want to be here and pray for our future,” tribal Chairman Harold Frazier said.

Others, including Dom Cross, an Oglala Sioux from Pine Ridge, South Dakota, said he planned to return home after living at the camp since September.

“There’s a lot of sadness right now. We have to leave our second home,” he said.

Law enforcement officers and first-responders were on hand from several states.

Charles Whalen, 50, an alcohol and drug counselor from Mille Lacs, Minnesota, said he and a group of about 20 people were not going to leave on their own and were willing to get arrested to prove their point.

“Passive resistance,” Whalen said. “We are not going to do anything negative. It’s about prayer.”

WASHINGTON – Transgender students lost federal protections Wednesday that allowed them to use school bathrooms and locker rooms matching their gender identities, as the Trump administration stepped into a long-simmering national debate.

The administration came down on the side of states’ rights, lifting Obamaera federal guidelines that had been characterized by Republicans as an example of overreach.

Without the Obama directive, it will be up to states and school districts to interpret federal anti-discrimination law and determine whether students should have access to restrooms in accordance with their expressed gender identity and not just their biological sex.

“This is an issue best solved at the state and local level,” Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said. “Schools, communities and families can find – and in many cases have found – solutions that protect all students.”

In a letter to the nation’s schools, the Justice and Education departments said the earlier guidance “has given

Even without that hold, the guidance carried no force of law. But transgender rights advocates said it was useful and necessary to protect students from discrimination. Opponents argued it was federal overreach and violated the safety and privacy of other students.

The reversal is a setback for transgender rights groups, which had been urging Trump to keep the guidelines in place. Advocates said federal law will still prohibit discrimination against students based on their gender or sexual orientation.

Still, they said lifting the Obama directive puts children in harm’s way.

“Reversing this guidance tells trans kids that it’s OK with the Trump administration and the Department of Education for them to be abused and harassed at school for being trans,” said American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten.

Leadership choices critical for D-428 DeKalb School District 428 board members made the right decision Tuesday in setting a course to move on from the distracting controversies of this school year.

Now DeKalb’s schools need new leaders.

Board members have moved to cut ties with Superintendent Doug Moeller, whose extracurricular relationship with DeKalb High School Principal Michele Albano led to a court-ordered restraining order and several embarrassing stories for the district. Albano, who by her own account was promised the job as principal

by Moeller before she even applied, also will not be back next year after the board voted Tuesday not to renew her contract, which expires June 30.

Also gone will be Human Resources Director Jim Bormann, a key figure in the contentious negotiations with the teachers union over the summer and who was in line to receive a $16,000-a-year raise – a more than 12 percent increase – this fall before outcry from teachers led to it being slashed dramatically in a confusing episode.

Just as importantly, the board approved an agreement with the Illinois Association of School Boards to search for a new superintendent. We wish that there was someone within the district qualified to take over; however, existing staff lack the necessary certifications – hence the need for the district to hire Bradley Hawk as a part-time replacement for Moeller most of this year.

The next superintendent will be a critical hire at a critical time for DeKalb’s public schools. The county’s largest school district has some of the best-appointed schools in the area, including stateof-the-art facilities at the new high school. Students are each

assigned their own computer devices, and the district offers the area’s broadest range of advanced placement and other classes.

However, the district has also seen an increase in racial and ethnic diversity. White students are the schools’ largest ethnic group, but the district is now majority-minority, with 50.4 percent of students having a racial background other than white, according to the Illinois State Board of Education school Report Card from 2015-16.

More than 11 percent of students do not speak English as their first language, and 57 percent are classified as low-income.

District 428 is not unique among Illinois schools in any of this. In fact, the numbers are in line with state averages. However, these changes require changes in the way the schools operate.

Stagnant property values in DeKalb have left many property owners weary of the property tax burden they are asked to shoulder to support the district’s budget. The call for cost-cutting and increased efficiency is growing louder – and this year there are 10 candidates for three seats on the district’s board.

The board members who are elected must make a wise choice in selecting a superintendent who can lead the district forward, who will recruit and promote building principals who can support their teachers and students, while managing expenses.

In some ways, 2016-17 will go down as a lost year from a leadership standpoint in the district.

But school officials can get things back on track by hiring a new leader who can move the city’s public schools forward.

Sorry Sweden: Another U.S. ally gets disapproval from president On Saturday, President Donald Trump added Sweden to a list of allies he had insulted publicly.

Mexico was the first.

Trump pounded so hard on his campaign point that the United States was going to build a wall across its southern border and make Mexico pay for it that Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto canceled his scheduled visit to the United States.

Next was Australia.

Trump found his telephone conversation with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull so unsatisfying – presumably discussion of an exchange of refugees President Barack Obama had agreed upon with Australia – that he let an account of his annoyance go public, in the process insulting the Australians, one of America’s closest allies.

It was Sweden’s turn Saturday, at a political

rally Trump held at Melbourne, Fla. The reason for the event, presumably to cover its financing, was an early opening to Trump’s campaign for re-election as president in 2020.

In making his familiar point that migrants were bad for a country, he cited Sweden’s relatively high rate of acceptance of migrants and attributed to it as a result a terrorist attack there the night before.

The unfortunate part, for Trump and for America, was there was no such attack, which the Swedes hastened to verify and then affirm.

When called on his mistake, Trump said he had seen a story on Fox News about immigrants and Sweden.

That network had broadcast one of its habitual reports hammering immigration, focusing on a documentary asserting a wave of violence by refugees in

Sweden, but nothing about an attack the night before.

In the meantime, Vice President Mike Pence was in Europe busily trying to calm European fears that America is about to abandon Europe, in security terms in NATO, and in its previous support of fruitful relations with a strong European Union.

Trump’s Sweden miscue did nothing to enhance Pence’s claims of continued firm U.S. attachment to its traditional economic, political and security alliance with Europe.

Trump’s addition of Sweden, a NATO partner and EU member, to his list of disrespected countries just makes things worse.

How is Pence to assure Europe that America seeks continued good relations without telling its leaders simply to ignore what Trump says?

That might be a good thing. Maybe Congress will adjust by doing more to set its own direction, as befits the branch of government to which Article I of the Constitution is devoted.

But it will take some getting used to. For congressional Republicans, the problem with Trump may not be that he is an authoritarian strongman, as so many of his critics say.

It’s that he is, by the standards to which we have become accustomed, a weak president.

But Trump has also been slow to name people to posts. And the congressional disarray is in part because Trump did not perform one of the usual roles of a presidential nominee: helping to settle some of the debates in his party over major policies so that everyone would work together on an agenda.

Trump isn’t serving that function even now. Republicans are having a sometimes heated debate about taxes.

Some of them think changing the way the tax code handles imports and exports is a crucial part of reform, and some of them oppose the idea. Trump first criticized the proposal, then opened the door to it.

He has been inconstant even about some of the ideas he touted during the campaign. He said the government would save money by negotiating with pharmaceutical companies, and kept saying it after the election. As president, however, he has renounced the policy.

Trump has also established a White House without clear lines of authority. Republican legal theorists have championed the idea of a “unitary executive” that speaks with one voice and acts with one purpose. Trump is not running an executive branch that conforms to the theory’s ideal.

Presidents before Trump have changed their minds about issues, let congressmen hash out issues, and tolerated factions in their administra-

What the ordinary citizen can do is encourage those capable and willing to lead with campaign support, and stay actively aware of local issues.

Hundreds of residents, NIU alumni and people who love this city have contributed to this goal through the BCAC, no contribution being too small.

In line with our hopes for DeKalb, the BCAC is currently endorsing these candidates:

By this point in his presidency, George W. Bush had announced the outline of a tax plan that, with modifications, he would sign into law a few months later. Barack Obama had signed the stimulus, a bill to expand the children’s health care program, and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. President Donald Trump is having a slower start. He has not signed major legislation yet. The White House has not put out a legislative plan on three of Trump’s main campaign issues: health care, infrastructure and tax reform. He has been slower in filling government positions than his predecessors, too. And the president’s highest-profile executive orders, on immigration, have been stayed by federal courts.

you stay the course – which is not easy to do when you’re down five with 4½ minutes to go.”

After a pair of Indian Creek layups – by Louis Faivre and Nolan Govig – cut the Raiders’ lead to one with three minutes remaining, the Timberwolves came up with two defensive plays that

swung the game.

Faivre, who finished with 10 points off the bench, jumped the passing lane for a steal on the right wing and turned it into a fast-break three-point play to give the Timberwolves the lead.

On the ensuing Raiders’ possession, Jordal stripped the ball from an Ashton-Franklin Center player and that eventually led to a pair of free throws

by Jordal to give the Timberwolves a 46-42 lead with 2:16 left – their first four-point advantage since the second quarter.

“Those two unforced turnovers at the end really hurt us,” Ashton-Franklin Center coach Russ Zick said. “We lost the ball twice, just gave them (five) points. That cost us. That was a big turnaround. Otherwise, I thought we played a good game, through and through.”

By the numbers: Although Govig only finished with six points on 2-for9 shooting, he was a monster on the glass for the Timberwolves. Govig, who holds the school-record for rebounds in a game with 25 earlier this season, finished with 18 – including four offensive.

Beyond the stats: The Timberwolves had two stretches in which they struggled to score. They went nearly four minutes without a point early in the second quarter – allowing the Raiders’ to turn a five-point deficit into a three-point lead with an 8-0 run. They also went 3½ minutes without a point to start the fourth quarter, which the Raiders took advantage of and built their 42-37 lead.

They said it: “We didn’t play our best and we still beat them. It shows us when we’re at our best, who’s going to beat us?” Guerra said. “We’re going to go out there on Friday against DePue and show them what we’re all about.”

Up next: The Timberwolves will face No. 2 DePue (25-3) at 7 p.m. Friday in the regional championship at Indian Creek.

SHABBONA – Ashton–Franklin Center senior Stephen Brooke’s halfcourt heave soared through the air before bouncing off the rim at the final buzzer.

With that, the Indian Creek boys basketball team finally could exhale.

In a game that featured a dozen lead changes, the No. 3 seed Timberwolves overcame a fourth-quarter deficit with the help of some timely defensive plays and held on for a 48-45 win over the No. 7 seed Raiders in a Class 1A Indian Creek Regional semifinal Wednesday night.

“I was just thinking, ‘If it goes in, worse thing is it just goes to OT. We have all the momentum,’ ” Indian Creek senior guard Trevor Guerra said about seeing Brooke’s shot in the air.

“It was just a crazy game. We didn’t bring our best out there, which in regional time, you have to bring your best, but we were able to scrap it out and get the win.”

Guerra was sensational on offense for the Timberwolves (24-5). He finished with a team-high 21 points on 7 for 14 shooting and went 7 for 9 from the foul line. However, a rare missed attempt by Guerra opened the door for one last shot for the Raiders.

Going to the line with 2.8 seconds remaining and the Timberwolves leading, 48-45, Guerra missed the front end of a one-and-one – which allowed Brooke’s last-second desperation heave.

“I assumed [Guerra] was going to make it because he doesn’t miss free throws,” Indian Creek coach Joe Piekarz said. “But what I did tell them was obviously don’t foul him when he’s shooting. Just get your hands up. At that point, if a kid makes a three-quarters court shot to tie it, then good for him. We’ll go to overtime.”

Ashton-Franklin Center junior Adam Hart led all scorers with 23 points and went 9 for 10 from the foul line.

The Raiders (18-13) seemed to have the momentum midway through the fourth quarter, taking a 42-37 lead after a free throw by Brooke with 4:57 left – the largest lead of the game for Ashton-Franklin Center. It also was the largest lead for either team since a layup by Indian Creek senior Kevin Jordal, who had nine points, gave the Timberwolves a 13-8 lead just more than a minute into the second quarter.

Bears round out coaching staff with 3 new assistants

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com The Bears filled out their coaching staff Wednesday by hiring three assistant coaches: Zach Azzanni (wide receivers), Brandon Staley (outside linebackers) and Derius Swinton II (assistant special teams).

Azzanni and Staley come to the Bears from the college ranks. Azzanni was the passing game coordinator and receivers coach for the Tennessee

Volunteers the past two seasons. He joined Tennessee in 2013 as the receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.

Azzanni spent the 2012 season as Wisconsin’s receivers coach and also has coached at Western Kentucky, Florida, Central Michigan – where he coached and recruited Antonio Brown – Bowling Green and Valparaiso.

As the new receivers coach, Azzanni replaces Curtis Johnson, who left for the same role with the New Orleans Saints. Azzanni will be key in helping

the development of Kevin White, who has played in only four games in two NFL seasons.

Staley replaces Clint Hurtt, who is now the Seahawks’ defensive line coach. Staley comes to Chicago from John Carroll College, where he was the defensive coordinator and secondary coach. Staley has coached at James Madison, Tennessee, Hutchinson (Kansas) Community College and Northern Illinois in his career.

As the new OLBs coach, Staley will

be counted on to work with Leonard Floyd, last year’s top pick, along with Pernell McPhee and Willie Young.

Swinton returns to the Bears after spending the 2016 season as the 49ers’ special teams coordinator. He was the assistant special teams coordinator for the Bears in 2015 and worked with current Bears special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers in Denver from 2013-14.

Swinton replaces Richard Hightower, who is now the special teams coordinator for the 49ers.

game. It will be a new normal in a relatively short period of time. Right now, it’s going to elicit a lot of discussion. I get it.”

Many players over the years have voiced the opinion of keeping things the way they are. Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant echoed them Wednesday.

“It doesn’t seem like it’s going to speed up the game any more,” Bryant said of the new intentional-walk rule. “If anything, it might hurt it, because I think it (four-pitch walks) puts pressure on the pitchers to make that pitch. It seems like it’s not stressful at, but anytime you’re not throwing it full effort for a pitcher, there’s a chance we could do damage on that.

“There’s been plenty of times a guy has thrown away an intentional walk. It will be interesting to see how that works out.”

Pace of play and time of games have been topics talked about for the past 20 years.

Pitch clocks, limiting visits to the mound and making hitters stay in the batter’s box have either been tried or talked about as have shortening commercial breaks between innings.

That’s a sticky topic because of the

advertising revenue the commercials generate.

With game times often exceeding three hours, Major League Baseball has been concerned that younger people don’t have the patience to sit through a long afternoon or evening.

Maddon said he doesn’t notice the length of games.

“If I had more interior information, maybe you could be more supportive of it,” he said of the speed-up efforts. “I’ve talked about it in the past. I don’t really understand the pace-of-game issues, because I really don’t pay attention to that. I’m just locked in to managing the game.

The nine innings goes two hours and (some) minutes or three hours and 20, as long as you win, I don’t care.

“That’s where I come from. But there’s obviously something larger than that that’s really causing a lot of these discussions. From my office, I don’t really know what that is. But I do know new normals may occur with more education or definition. I may support it more easily. I just don’t know. I’ve never been concerned about that from my chair.”

Hahn expresses confidence in newest coaching hires

GLENDALE, Ariz. – General manager Rick Hahn said last year the direction of the White Sox offseason would be evident with his first couple of moves.

The Chris Sale trade in December signaled it loud and clear, and was echoed by another player for prospects blockbuster when Adam Eaton was dealt.

But putting Rick Renteria in place as manager two months earlier was actually the first clue.

“In a lot of ways hiring Ricky and promoting Nick Capra and Curt Hasler, who all had deep player development roots, made it clear internally,’’ Hahn said. “We’re going to where teachers are important, where you’re identifying priorities and teaching, and holding guys accountable and building something for the future.’’

Capra, who had been player development director, is now the third

base coach.

Hasler, the roving minor league pitching coordinator, replaced Bobby Thigpen as bullpen coach. Renteria was hired by Theo Epstein during the Cubs rebuild and was unceremoniously let go when Joe Maddon became available.

Hahn said Renteria, who replaced Robin Ventura after serving as bench coach last season, will still be here if and when the Sox are fully equipped, personnelwise, to take the next step.

“Ricky and this staff can very much handle a team that is ready to win and I fully expect them all to be in place when this team is ready to win,’’ Hahn said.

For now, Renteria is arriving at Camelback Ranch every morning at 5:15 or 5:30 and pouring himself into team building, uncovering ways to connect players in ways that keep the unit close-knit.

He’s also hammering away at fundamentals, covering both of those areas with a hands-on, communicative

approach. Speaking Spanish is an obvious plus in that regard.

Fundamentals are important in “every aspect, from the defensive to the offensive,’’ Renteria said after drills Wednesday. “We’re trying to incorporate things this spring to help us improve on those things. We’re talking about it a lot.

“A lot of it is about more focus and preparation, so hopefully we can increase our intensity and concentration in certain situations without getting uptight and limiting our ability to do certain things.’’

Hahn was so sold on Renteria while he was the bench coach, the Sox didn’t bother to search around or outside the organization, although there was nothing to lose and certainly something to gain by talking to other candidates.

“He is a knowledgeable teacher of the game who loves to develop players and spends hours watching video looking for any nuance that gives us an edge,’’ Hahn said.

Hahn is also high on 33-year-old Chris Getz, the former Sox infielder hired from the Royals organization to be in charge of player development.

“It won’t be too long from now, I’m guessing a few years, he will be off running his own club,’’ Hahn said.

“That’s how high I think his ceiling is.’’

Meanwhile, Hahn continues to not tip his hand on further trade talks, but in jest cracked a doosy the other day about a trade with the Cubs.

“I was offered on my way here [Javy] Baez and [Kyle] Schwarber for [Jose] Quintana,’’ Hahn said. “It was by the TSA agent at O’Hare. So there has been some Cubs-Sox dialog.

“I told him that’s a nice start. Get back to me when you want to add to it. I haven’t heard from him so I guess that’s the end of that.’’

In any event, whether Quintana is on his team or elsewhere, leaving a weaker team for Renteria to manage, Hahn is confident he has the right man in place.

MESA, Ariz. – Cubs manager Joe Maddon is the kind of guy who goes by the axiom of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

But Maddon also seems flexible enough to roll with some of the changes to baseball. That includes the expected change this year from pitchers throwing four pitches for an intentional walk to managers merely signaling their intention to walk the batter.

That idea, among others being discussed, is aimed at speeding up the pace of play and cutting the time it takes to play the games.

“I’ve always been that guy,” Maddon said Wednesday of preferring to leave things alone. “I always talk about organic methods of change. I’m not a tinkerer although you might say different things I’ve done, whether it’s shifting on defense, utilization of different plays we’ve done, whether it’s the first baseman coming in, in the slot between the mound (and the base). I don’t know if that’s tinkering.

That’s just a new method.”

With intentional walks, there is always the possibility – however slim – of something going haywire, such as a pitcher uncorking a wild pitch, a batter Joe swinging at a ball close Maddon to the plate and getting a hit or even the defense tricking the batter and throwing a strike on a 3-2 count.

“That’s the anomaly moment,” Maddon said. “I have seen the ball hit. I have seen the ball hit to benefit the offense. It’s kind of like a push with me. I know some (pitchers) that I’ve had in the past that don’t like to do that, because they don’t like to throw the four pitches. So you’re taking away even a small threat, but there’s a threat nevertheless, that a guy just can’t do that, and you can benefit from it offensively.

“By the same token, if you have a guy that doesn’t like to do it from the mound, you kind of like it because he doesn’t have to go through the angst of going through that four pitches.

It’s just of those things, I don’t think it has that much of an impact on the

Butler unlikely to be dealt at deadline

At least the part of the roster not named Jimmy Butler.

Multiple sources reiterated to the Sun-Times that while the Bulls have taken numerous calls on Butler throughout the week, they have no plans to move the three-time All-Star before the Thursday afternoon trade deadline.

Not that coach Fred Hoiberg was going to tip his hand one way or the other.

“Jimmy obviously has been great for us,” Hoiberg said when asked about the possibility of Butler being moved.

“We think that will obviously continue to happen.”

While Butler was excused from the Wednesday evening practice, he has been front and center in the trade rumors, with Boston a front-runner to try and acquire the Bulls’ best player.

Hoiberg said this time of year brings out the rumors.

“The job that the front-office guys have right now is to hear everything and listen to everything and see if there’s

something that can help out without jeopardizing the future,” Hoiberg said.

“Again, there’s a lot of things, a lot of scenarios that are out there, but again, 99 percent of the things you hear and read don’t transpire. You just have to be ready to go out and compete and control what you can control.”

What Hoiberg wanted controlled was two days of hard practices, keeping the outside noise to a minimum.

“I don’t think it’s affected us at all,” Hoiberg said of the trade talk. “I think our guys have done a great job. There’s so many rumors that get thrown against the wall. That’s what most of them are.

They’re rumors, and our guys have done a good job of ignoring that and going out and trying to work through.

“I like the way we finished before the break with two very good wins.

Hopefully we can build off what we did in those games, with momentum going into the break, and come out and play well starting on Friday.

“Everybody’s doing their job right now. There’s probably a lot more noise than what’s actually going to happen.”

But even Hoiberg couldn’t quiet all the noise.

That’s why Nikola Mirotic should keep a bag packed just in case.

The Sun-Times reported in early January that Mirotic was being shopped, and that hasn’t changed. As well as being shopped, it sounded as if Mirotic also has been moved further down the bench in Hoiberg’s eyes.

The coach raved about how well Bobby Portis played in the win over Boston last week, and said of Portis, “He’s going to continue to get his opportunity to get minutes. And hopefully he will continue to play well.”

When asked if that meant Mirotic was out of the rotation for the time be-

ing, Hoiberg said, “We’ll see. We’ll see how the flow of the game is going.”

“We’ve had so many young guys who have come off that bench,” Hoiberg said of his depth. “You try to find the players that can go out and help you win. Some nights, it will be different guys, especially based on different injuries and illnesses. Guys have gotten opportunities to play extended minutes. It would be great to have a full, healthy roster here coming down the stretch and try to settle on a nine- or 10-man rotation.”

Schmaltz’s planning allows him to be difference maker

mlazerus@suntimes.com When Nick Schmaltz took control of the puck at the top of the right circle Tuesday night, he had a plan in mind as he wheeled around the back of the net. He saw Jonathan Toews drifting toward the crease, and he figured the Minnesota Wild would be expecting him to try a wrap-around shot or a centering pass from the far side of the net.

Instead, Schmaltz stopped and slipped a nifty, backhanded pass to Toews. Toews, as surprised by the pass as the Wild defenders, managed to pitchfork a shot into the net for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Nobody saw the pass coming. Nobody except for Schmaltz.

Schmaltz always has a plan.

“I always try to know what I have before I touch the puck, especially in this league, because you have less time and space,” Schmaltz said. “You want to be aware of what’s going on before you touch it, and those little plays can

open up space.”

That playmaking ability is what made Schmaltz such a highly touted prospect after his breakout sophomore season at North Dakota last year, when he posted 11 goals and 35 assists in 37 games. But when he made the jump to the NHL, the flashes of creativity were few and far between. He was too quick to give up the puck, too hesitant to shoot, too unsure of himself to play at the level the Hawks expected of him.

“I think we all knew the potential that he had as a player in this league,” Toews said. “And sometimes it takes a little time.”

Toews, who made the same jump from North Dakota to the NHL without a stop in the minor leagues, understood why. The transition from the loose college schedule to the rigorous NHL schedule can be overwhelming at first – mentally as much as physically.

“It’s so much different playing so many more games,” Schmaltz said.

“In college, you just kind of practice all week and play two games on the

weekend. So it’s been an adjustment.

You have to make sure you’re taking care of your body. And there’s not as much practice, so you’ve got to make sure you’re sharp in morning skates.

You’ve just got to prepare differently. I feel more comfortable now.”

A 12-game stint in Rockford did wonders for Schmaltz. He went from playing 10 or 11 minutes a night to playing 20 minutes a night, in all situations. He got to be a top guy again, like he was in college, and get his confidence back. He returned to the Hawks on Jan. 15, and has been a different player since, with four goals and six assists in 15 games. He has two goals and five assists in his past six games, and is making a case to be the longterm solution as Toews’ left wing on the top line.

In a three-point night against Minnesota, Schmaltz seemed to have the puck on his stick constantly, moving through the offensive zone with an almost-Patrick Kane-like flair.

Joel Quenneville, who chooses

his words carefully, especially when talking about rookies, had high praise for Schmaltz.

“He’s been really good,” Quenneville said. “[Tuesday] was the most we’ve ever seen him with the puck. I don’t know how many times he evaded coverage, and all of a sudden he loses the guy on him and a play develops.

That play against the grain to [Toews] was spectacular.”

Schmaltz is very much on the Teuvo Teravainen track. Teravainen, in his rookie season, looked overwhelmed early on before a confidence-boosting stint in Rockford led to major contributions during a Stanley Cup run in 2015. That’s the plan for Schmaltz, too.

And Schmaltz is usually pretty good with a plan.

“Obviously, you don’t ever want to get sent down,” Schmaltz said. “But a lot of guys go through it. In the long run, when I look back at it, I can see it was definitely beneficial. That time in Rockford really made a difference for me.”

Oscar options

More ways to view films nominated for an Academy Award

ore movies and cheaper options arrived online Tuesday for movie fans still needing to catch up on Oscar-nominated flicks.

Of the 62 full-length movies and shorts nominated for any category, 45 are available in some form online.

That includes animated and liveaction shorts released Tuesday by the cable channel Shorts HD. One more title, the best picture nominee “Fences,” comes out online Friday, leaving just 16 that you can see only in theaters.

Watching all 46 online will cost at least $173, assuming you already have subscriptions to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime or HBO Now. Focusing on just best picture and the four acting categories will still cost you nearly $70, not including the monthly subscriptions.

It’s the cost of improving your chances of winning the Oscar pool.

The good news is that prices have fallen for a few titles since last week.

Here’s your viewing guide:

BEST PICTURE (AND DIRECTING)

None of the nine best picture nominees is available through a subscription service.

You can rent “Arrival,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” “Hell or High Water,” “Manchester by the Sea” and “Moonlight” through Amazon, Google Play or Apple’s iTunes. “Fences” will be available for purchase only on Friday.

in high definition. Buying downloads usually costs about $15 for standard definition or $20 for HD. Shop around, as prices aren’t always the same at the various services.

Based on the cheapest options, you’ll have to spend nearly $40 on the best picture movies.

You’ll need to visit a theater for “Hidden Figures,” “La La Land” and “Lion.” They aren’t expected online before Sunday’s ceremony.

On the plus side, you’ll also get to watch all the nominees for best directing; all five nominees are also up for best picture.

ACTING NOMINEES

In addition to the best picture flicks, you’ll need to watch six more movies to catch everyone nominated for the four acting categories.

“Captain Fantastic,” “Florence Foster Jenkins,” “Loving” and “Nocturnal Animals” are available for rent.

“Jackie” is available for purchase online.

The cumulative total: nearly $70.

To see “Elle,” you’ll need to visit your local cineplex or indie theater.

SCREENPLAY CATEGORIES

All but two of the nominees in the two writing categories overlap with best picture. “The Lobster” is available through Amazon Prime, while “20th Century Women” isn’t online at all.

FULL-LENGTH CARTOONS

Netflix has “Zootopia.” “Kubo and the Two Strings” is available to rent.

“Moana” was released online Tuesday for purchase only. Head to theaters for “My Life as a Zucchini” and “The Red Turtle.”

FULL-LENGTH DOCUMENTARIES

Netflix produced “13th” and streams it exclusively. Amazon Prime has “Life, Animated.” Hulu has “O.J.: Made in America” (as does WatchESPN, though you’ll need to sign in with a cable or satellite TV account).

“Fire At Sea” can be rented, while “I Am Not Your Negro” isn’t expected online until June.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Rent “A Man Called Ove” and “Tanna.” Buy a ticket for the rest.

THE 15 SHORTS

• Animated: Shorts HD has a package with four of the five nominated shorts. The cheapest option as of Tuesday was through Google Play for about $6. You’ll need to buy Pixar’s “Piper” separately through Amazon, Google Play or iTunes for about $2.

• Live Action: Shorts HD has all five in a package. Again, Google Play was offering the best deal for about $6.

• Documentaries: “Extremis” and “The White Helmets” are available through Netflix. The New York Times is streaming “4.1 Miles” for free, while The New Yorker magazine hosts “Joe’s Violin.”

You’ll need to head to a theater for “Watani: My Homeland.” Shorts HD runs screenings at theaters, libraries

and museums across the country.

AND THE REST ...

That leaves 15 movies for lower-profile categories such as music and makeup.

Netflix has “The Jungle Book,” while Hulu and Amazon Prime offer “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.” HBO has “Hail, Caesar!” and “Jim: The James Foley Story.”

Five other movies can be rented, while two are for purchase only.

That means theaters for four – if you can still find a screening. These include big releases such as “Rogue One” and “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” so perhaps you’ve seen them already.

WATCHING THE SHOW

In major cities, the ceremony itself will be streamed online at abc.com and the ABC app if you can’t get to a TV. However, you’ll need to sign in with a cable or satellite account.

You also might be able to watch through an online TV subscription with Sling TV, PlayStation Vue or DirecTV Now. Availability depends on where you live; only a handful of ABC stations are offered this way.

For the E! channel’s red carpet coverage, you’ll need a subscription with an online TV service or a traditional cable or satellite provider. The cheapest plan with both ABC and E! is at DirecTV Now for $35 a month.

Oscar.com will have backstage and red-carpet coverage, starting at 6 p.m.

The stream continues once the ceremony begins at 7:30 p.m., but what’s on stage will only be on ABC. It’s free, with no cable or satellite required.

Museum reopens for season with viewing of rarely seen artifacts DAILY CHRONICLE A number of exceptional artifacts from the Ellwood Mansion collections – rarely seen by the public – will be on display at seven stations within the historic building on Sunday, March 5, from 3 to 5 p.m.

A knowledgeable guide will talk about each artifact and weave a story through background documentation, photographs and diary entries. The program is open to all Ellwood House members as well as those interested in becoming members.

“The goal of the program is to bring together both our longtime members and those just signing up for membership for an investigation into the breadth of materials within the collections. We want to make the mansion, its stories and museum collections available to those who want to engage,” Scott Tews, assistant director of the museum, said in a news release.

Among the highlighted objects are Ellwood family photo albums, uniforms worn by Ellwood House servants in the early 20th century, and cylinder records for an Edison Standard Phonograph.

Refreshments will be available in the Visitor Center. Admittance to the mansion will end at 4:30 p.m.

Membership in the Ellwood House Association is open to anyone. Memberships can be purchased online at www.ellwoodhouse.org, by phone

at 815-756-4609, or in-person in the Ellwood House Visitor Center. The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra will present its Arthur D. Montzka Memorial Concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Northern Illinois University’s Boutell Memorial Concert Hall.

All concertgoers are invited to attend a free pre-concert lecture in the Recital Hall at 6:30 p.m. The orchestra will perform the Symphonic Suite from “On the Waterfront” by Leonard Bernstein; Symphony No. 4 in A Major, Op. 90 (“Italian”) by Felix Mendelssohn; and Concerto for Violin in D Major, by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, featuring Maya Anjali Buchanan, violin soloist.

Buchanan is the winner of this year’s Arthur D. Montzka Young Artists Concerto Competition. This concert is supported in part by the Montzka family, the Mary E. Stevens Concert Trust, and WNIU/WNIJstation sponsorship.

Sixteen-year-old East Indian/ American violinist Buchanan studies with Almita Vamos at the Music Institute of Chicago Academy, an elite training program for advanced pre-college musicians, and is the recipient of a full-tuition merit scholarship. During the summer season she studies with Paul Kantor at the Aspen Music Festival and School.

Buchanan is a major prize winner in three international competitions.

Most recently, she captured the Silver Medal at the 2016 Stradivarius International Violin Competition in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 2015, she was awarded major prizes at the Cooper International Violin Competition in Oberlin, Ohio, and the 2015 triennial Johansen International Competition for Young String Players held in Washington, D.C., where she was the only American violinist to be awarded a top prize.

School of Theatre and Dance to present production of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ DAILY CHRONICLE Starting Thursday, Northern Illinois University School of Theatre and Dance students will perform one of the most timeless and famous pieces of literature in history, William

Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.”

This production will explore a contemporary style mixed with the classic heartbreaking love story.

“I think it is as vital now as it was when it was written,” guest director Richard Raether said in a news

release. Raether is the artistic director at the Artists’ Ensemble Theatre in Rockford.

This classic show tells the story of a pair of teenagers struck by love at first sight. However, when family rivalries interfere, the couple is pushed to give

the ultimate sacrifice in order to protect their sacred vows.

“Romeo and Juliet,” although traditionally performed in the style of the mid-1590s, has a significant amount of

Recital to feature scholarship winners DAILY CHRONICLE Six talented young musicians will perform in the annual Honors Recital at Northern Illinois University at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

They are the recipients of a talent scholarship awarded by the NIU Community School of the Arts.

The Honors Recital takes place in the Recital Hall in the Music Building at NIU and is free and open to the public.

Auditions for the awards are in January, when the young musicians play their pieces from memory before a team of three judges.

Each winner receives $250.

Ranging in age from 10 to 18, this year’s winners are from DeKalb, Sycamore, Dixon and Princeton. They will perform works by Seitz, Vivaldi, Bohm, Chopin, Cassado and Salzedo.

At the elementary age level,

Faustina Bystry (violin) is 10 years old and attends home school as a fifth-grader in Princeton. She is the daughter of Rachel and Jeffery Bystry, and she studies violin with Ann Montzka Smelser. Miranda Zhang (violin) is 11 years old and attends fifth grade at Southeast Elementary School in Sycamore.

She is the daughter of Jie Zhou and Jun Zhang and she studies violin with Laurie Rodriguez.

At the junior age level, Cindy Minju Oh (piano) is 13 years old and in seventh grade at Clinton Rosette Middle School in DeKalb.

She is the daughter of Jungmi Kang and Chiyong Oh and she studies piano with Yurong “Ria” Yang. Marisel Schalck (violin) is 13 years old and attends home school as a seventh-grader in Dixon. She is the daughter of Bill and Allison Schalck and she studies violin with Lisa Chodorowski.

At the senior age level, Kjelden Breidenbach (cello) is 17 years old and a junior at Sycamore High School. He is the son of Bob and Julie Breidenbach and he studies cello with Linc Smelser. Sofia Mattson (harp) is 18 years old and a senior at DeKalb High School. She is the daughter of Lynn Batalden and Mark Mattson and she studies harp with Jaina Krueger.

The money for these awards comes from the NIU Community School scholarship fund. The CSA also awards need scholarships twice each year. Since 1993, more than 800 scholarships have been awarded to area students to pursue their study of the arts with the community school.

The NIU Community School of the Arts offers lessons, classes and ensembles in music and visual art.

The contemporary style in which the play is being performed lends a lot to making this show accessible to a modern audience, as well.

“It’s designed to have a very contemporary feel which helps an audience to identify with the characters, to understand who they are and what motivates them,” she said in the release.

Performances will be at Huntley Middle School’s main auditorium, 1515 S. Fourth St. in DeKalb. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

A pair of art majors from Northern Illinois University are featured in the 2017 Black Creativity Juried Art Exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. The show is the nation’s longest running, and one of the most prestigious, art exhibitions devoted to African-American art, and accepts only about 100 pieces each year.

While the two students, Jamiah Calvin and Kianna Davis, share in common great talent and a passion for art, they have traveled very different paths to the NIU School of Art and Design. At age 35, Calvin has been actively studying and producing serious art for only two years, while Davis, 22, has known since her freshman year in high school that she wanted to pursue a career as an artist.

Calvin found his calling when he enrolled in business classes at Kiswhaukee College. He enrolled in an art class to fulfill an elective requirement because he had always enjoyed drawing. The teacher immediately saw promise in his work and he quickly shifted his focus.

After just a few months at NIU, he had work displayed at The Art Box in DeKalb, followed by a pair of Chicago galleries, and now the Museum of Science and Industry.

“It’s been kind of a fast track, I’m still trying to process it all,” Calvin said in a news release.

The oil painting featured in the show, “Crossing the Rubicon,” combines aspects of both realism and surrealism. The 48-by-60-inch piece is part of a three-painting series he calls “The Stakes are High.” The series, he says, depicts the injustices prevalent in the African-American community, particularly in Chicago, where he was raised.

“There are a lot of issues affecting today’s youth – gang violence, poverty… I don’t have a solution, but I want to paint things that make people stop and think,” he said in the release.

“She has a lifestyle that is very spiritual and natural and I really admire that, so I kind of put myself in there,” she said in the release.

Davis said the acrylic painting, which measures 48 inches by 48 inches, and took two months to complete, is the largest piece she has created to date. It also is one of her favorites.

The painting has proven popular at the show, Foster said. “People tend to invoke their personal interpretation of this one. Some think it has a spiritual quality, while others note its overall innocence.”

28 Topical pain relievers can be effective Dear Doctor: I play in a weekend softball league, and my shoulder aches for a couple of days after the game. Aspirin hurts my stomach, so I wonder whether using a pain medication in a cream or an ointment might help?

Dear Reader: Thanks to effective over-thecounter drugs, banishing minor aches or pains is as easy as a trip to your medicine cabinet. These pain relievers, which are also used to reduce fever, fall into two main categories.

One is acetaminophen, sold under the brand name Tylenol. The others are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs. Aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen (sold under the brand name Aleve) are all NSAIDs. As you have found, stomach upset can be a side effect of NSAIDs like aspirin. For people who prefer not to take ibuprofen or NSAIDs in pill form, topical pain relievers, which are applied directly to the skin, offer an alternative.

The idea is that the medication, when placed on or near the point of pain, will be absorbed into the body, bypassing the stomach, and offer targeted relief.

A visit to the drugstore for a topical pain reliever can be confusing. Not only do you have your choice of creams, gels, foams, patches, sprays and (we’re almost done) rollons, the products themselves fall into several distinct categories. Once you understand what they contain and how they work, you can decide what’s right for you.

• Topical NSAIDs: Yes, we’re talking about aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen again. However, studies show that blood levels of NSAIDs that are delivered through the skin are quite low, so potential for stomach upset is greatly reduced. What’s important here is to follow the dosage recommendations. Don’t use too much or reapply too often. And never use multiple NSAID products at once. Talk to your doctor about which ones to use, because they exist in both prescription and over-the-counter forms.

Topical products with capsaicin work by essentially desensitizing your body’s pain response. However, some people find the burning sensation to be so intense that they are replacing one kind of discomfort with another.

• Menthol: Like capsaicin, menthol is a counterirritant that creates a new, cooling sensation powerful enough to distract from the pain.

• Methyl salicylate: Also known as oil of wintergreen, this is another counterirritant.

It first makes the skin feel cool, and then feel warm. It’s similar to aspirin, so be sure to read the label for counter-indications.

Finding a product you like may take some trial and error. When you do: • Remember that topical pain relievers are meant for pain that is mild to moderate.

• They should be used for no longer than seven days, unless your doctor says otherwise.

• Wash your hands immediately after applying the product.

• Never use on an open wound or damaged skin.

• Do not wrap or bandage the affected area until you’re sure the product has been fully absorbed, as warmth and pressure may cause a higher level of absorption.

• For that same reason, you should never use a heating pad with these products.

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY husband’s nephew, “Jacob,” is 25 and Jeanne always hanging Phillips around our house.

He has had a hard time over the last four years. First, his mom committed suicide. Two years later, his dad died in his sleep.

My husband and I told Jacob we would be there when he needed advice about things.

Well, he recently broke up with his longtime girlfriend, and he’s here at my house every day – even days he’s not working. He calls every afternoon to see what I’m cooking and expects to eat here every night. He also expects me to drop what I’m doing to go and clean his house and wash his clothes.

I’m disabled, so it’s a struggle just to feed my husband and myself. He also sleeps here on the weekends if he doesn’t work. My husband and I no longer have any alone time because he’s always here.

I have tried to tell Jacob nicely that he needs his own life, but the message isn’t getting through. I know he has issues with being alone.

He has never learned to be by himself. My husband is starting to get angry about the situation and wants me to “handle” it, but my words are not working. If my husband decides to say something, it will end up in a heated argument.

How can I get through to this kid without hurting him? I do love him and try to treat him like one of my own kids. – Upset Aunt Dear Aunt: Talk to Jacob again. This time do it in plain English. Your nephew’s dependence on you has persisted for too long, and for everyone’s sake it needs to stop. If you haven’t suggested grief counseling for him, you should.

Explain that you love him, but you and your husband need time to be alone together. Point out that if he’s unable to do his own housecleaning and laundry, he should hire someone. Do not feel guilty for speaking up. You have done more than enough for Jacob over the last few years, and for him to expect you to cook for him every night and weekend is over the top.

Dear Abby: My husband quit chewing tobacco, but now he chews gum constantly, three pieces at a time. If he’s not asleep or eating, his jaw is moving. He chews it aggressively, rolls it around in his mouth while talking, so that it looks bad and is irritating.
