Special delivery: U.S.-born panda cub bound for China

WASHINGTON – The National Zoo is packing up its American-born panda cub, Bao Bao, for a one-way flight to China, where the 3-yearold will eventually join a panda breeding program.

The cub won’t have to worry about finding overhead bin space or dealing with a talkative seatmate on the 16-hour, nonstop flight Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday. She’ll be the only panda on the plane, traveling with a keeper and a veterinarian. Her accommodations are first class, too: a special metal crate the size of a double bed she can stretch out in. A sticker on its outside announces its contents: “one panda.”

In preparation for the trip, keepers have a packing list of Bao Bao’s favorite foods including 55 pounds of bamboo, 5 pounds of apples and 2 pounds of sweet potatoes.

“Most of the flight, we hope she’s going to eat,” said panda keeper Marty Dearie, who will

travel with Bao Bao to China and said pandas spend 13 to 16 hours a day eating.

Bao Bao is scheduled to depart the zoo Tuesday morning and travel to Washington Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia, where she’ll board a special FedEx plane. Fans will be able to watch her departure from the zoo and airport on the zoo’s Facebook page.

Once Bao Bao arrives in Chengdu, China, she’ll be driven to her new home, one of the bases run by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. Dearie will briefly remain with her while she gets adjusted. In time, when she reaches sexual maturity, between 5 and 6 years old, she’ll become part of a panda breeding program. The National Zoo said Bao Bao is traveling now because it’s better for pandas to travel in the winter months when it is cool.

Bao Bao delighted the zoo and panda fans when she was born Aug. 23, 2013. Her mother, Mei Xiang, gave birth to her first cub, Tai Shan, in 2005, but then failed to get pregnant for years.

Tenants claim they were without hot water for months last fall

browland@shawmedia.com Two people who lived at Suburban Apartments on Twombly Road near DeKalb are suing the company that owns the complex, claiming they went months without hot water and had other water problems while living there.

Robyn Rogers and Sara Atkins filed a lawsuit against Naperville-based MCJ Investments LLC seeking a refund of 60 percent of the rent they have paid since August until the case is resolved. The suit also seeks refunds for all other affected tenants in the nearly 500-unit apartment complex, according to court documents. It also asks that security deposits be refunded and that the company cover the cost of the litigation.

DeKalb County received 14 individual complaints regarding the hot water and heat issue last fall, Director of Health Protection Greg Maurice said.

Joe Lovelace, director of the Students’ Legal Assistance Division of Student Affairs at Northern Illinois University, filed the suit on behalf of the tenants in October. Lovelace didn’t return messages seeking comment.

MCJ Investments is fighting the suit and claims the allegations are “moot” because as of December new boilers had been installed and the problems fixed, according to a response filed by Sycamore attorney Timothy Conklin on behalf of the company.

The company has said it was aware of some water problems, but denied that it hid the problems from prospective renters, disputed the scope of the problems and denied allegations that the units were rendered uninhabitable by the water problems and utility disruptions during repairs. Conklin didn’t return messages seeking comment.

A message left at the apartment complex’s office also wasn’t returned.

Atkins said in court records that she signed a lease in July for $615 a month and moved into the complex in early August. She discovered there was no hot water the day after she moved in, according to court records.

“On a daily basis in August, September and October ... I have been without hot water or water completely,” she said in the lawsuit. “I was not able to use my apartment because of the lack of hot water. I showered at either the NIU Recreation Center or out of town at the home of friends and family. I started using paper plates as I was unable to wash dishes, I incurred expenses in eating out and driving to shower.”

Rogers, who paid $660 a month, also said she wasn’t told about the problems before signing a lease in May. She said her roommate moved in with a boyfriend. When Rogers asked management about the problems, she was told the problems would be fixed “next week,” according to the lawsuit. She also noted that she had no hot water at all for 12 days in August.

MCJ Investments bought the complex, which

includes Suburban Apartments (on Annie Glidden) and Suburban Estates (1400 Twombly Road), for $10.5 million in 2015. At the time, the new owners promised improvements including renovations.

The three members of the limited liability company are Justin Bedi, Manpreet Bedi and Christine Bedi, according to state records. Rents range from $475 for a studio to $1,000 for a three-bedroom apartment, according to the company’s website.

Event covers lesser-known leaders Children ‘Meet the Presidents’ at library

That’s why today many of us don’t know that President Franklin Pierce tried and failed to buy the island of Cuba from Spain, or William Howard Taft, the heaviest president, loved surfing.

Dozens of children and adults attended a “Meet the Presidents” event Monday at the DeKalb Public Library that put the spotlight on U.S. leaders of the past who are not as well-recognized as today as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

In honor of Presidents Day, Courtney Holtz brought her 3-year-old daughter, Grace, and 7-year-old son, Johnathon, to the DeKalb Public Library on Monday so they could learn more about U.S. presidents.

Johnathon said he was interested in the presidents, but was not interested in pursuing a career in politics – or becoming president himself – because several of them ended up being assassinated.

Recent Presidents Day themes at the library have included presidents with a connection to Illinois, such as President Barack Obama, who was a state and U.S. senator from Illinois, and Ronald Reagan, who was born in Tampico and grew up in Dixon. Another theme was presidents with the name William, such as presidents Harrison, Taft, McKinley and Clinton.

Volunteers during those years were limited, partly because of the lack of space in the original Haish Memorial Library.

However, youth services manager Theresa Winterbauer said that thanks to participants in Northern Illinois University’s monthlong Sophomore Days of Service and the additional space provided by library’s expansion project completed last year, the library was able to deliver fun facts on 10 of the country’s presidents. They are Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, James Polk, Millard Fillmore, Pierce, Andrew Johnson, Chester A. Arthur, Taft and Woodrow Wilson.

A group of between 25 to 30 children from The Growing Place Inc. child care service in DeKalb participated in the event.

each president, such as that Tyler had the most children of any president with 15 or Jackson owned parrots and was a terrible speller, received a gift certificate for a free kids’ meal at Buffalo Wild Wings and were entered into a raffle to win a book.

Jency Thomas, a graduate assistant at NIU with the First- and Second-Year Experience, said the Sophomore Days of Service is a good opportunity to give students of all levels a sense of belonging.

Carissa Hartwig, a communications major at NIU, said the event seemed like a lot of fun, and she liked the idea of coming to the library to get involved with the community.

Sophomore Days of Service concludes at the end of February, but students will still be volunteering at the Huskie Student Food Pantry, West Elementary School, the DeKalb Area Women’s Center and other locations.

LOCAL BRIEF Missing child found, search continues for kidnapped mother

Paul Merritte, an 11-month-old child who was last seen Friday, was found safe Sunday evening, but police still are searching for the child’s mother, Kayla Stratton.

The LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office said the 24-year-old Stratton was run off the road in Streator by the child’s father,

33-year old Clarence Merritte, who then pulled her out of the car by her hair and forced her into a car that was later found abandoned several blocks away.

Stratton’s and Merritte’s son, who police believed was with them, was found by a friend of Stratton’s outside her home. He was later taken to an area hospital for a health evaluation.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Merritte for the offense of unlawful restraint, driving while license revoked, domestic battery and aggravated assault.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Kayla Stratton or Clarence Merritte should call the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office at 815-433-2161.

The complex has about 500 units over about 20 buildings, DeKalb Township Property Tax Assessor John Hietikko said. The complex was built in the 1960s, according to Daily Chronicle archives.

Both the DeKalb County Health Department and the Planning and Zoning Department worked with MCJ Investments when it was addressing the boiler issues, DeKalb County Public Health Administrator Lisa Gonzalez said.

She said a boiler that supplied hot water and heat to eight buildings was failing and had to be replaced.

“The Planning and Zoning Department worked with the contractor on site to approve plans and the Health Department fielded calls from tenants,” Gonzalez said. “The Health Department also conducted outreach to the tenants to provide information on project timeline, roles and responsibilities and safety messaging for the use of portable heaters.”

Gonzalez said the issue was resolved Nov. 2. If the problem left any units uninhabitable, the DeKalb County Health Department wasn’t aware of it, she said.

“The issue took place right as the colder weather was approaching, and it is our understanding that the complex did offer space heaters for tenants,” Gonzalez said.

The case is next due in court Friday.

“This is not an aesthetics program; it’s a functional program aimed at ensuring a safe, walkable community,”

Because the general operations fund will no longer receive capital transfers from the general capital assistance fund, more money will be available for additional capital improvements, according to the proposal.

Gregory said a full outline of the budget would be brought to the council for review March 20.

SYCAMORE – Sycamore officials are looking to invest about $14.3 million toward capital improvements in fiscal 2018, including repairing streets, parking lots and sidewalks, replacing the city’s water main and expanding its sewer treatment plant.

The Sycamore City Council heard a consideration Monday for a proposed three-year capital improvement plan that would spend $14,311,400 for these projects and others during the next fiscal year, which begins May 1.

Most of the funding would be $10 million allocated to the third phase of construction for the city’s wastewater treatment plant expansion. The planned expansion is projected to cost more than $25 million.

The city implemented a three-year series of sewer rate increases in 2015 to raise money for the expansion.

However, the improvements proposed Monday have dedicated revenue sources and would not require tax

increases, according to the proposal.

The plan also includes about $3 million toward street maintenance and repairs, which would be funded in part by a transfer from the sales tax distributive fund, City Manager Brian Gregory said.

“There’s some reserves in that fund that we would think are best utilized on our infrastructure,” he said.

Gregory said a list of proposed streets requiring maintenance would be brought to the council March 6. One street in need of repair is Ellen Street, which lies over a series of water main breaks, he said.

“The condition of the street has needed maintenance for some time; however, it makes very little sense to go in and remove and not replace the water main, especially when you come in with big vibrating rollers that will cause water main breaks,” he said.

The proposal also dedicates $125,000 from the sales tax distributive fund for water main improvements.

Workers’ comp for pro athletes in question

SPRINGFIELD – Should injured pro athletes be allowed to earn workers’ compensation benefits until they are 67 years old, like other workers, even if their athletic careers normally would have ended more than 30 years earlier?

That issue is being debated between the Chicago Bears and the NFL Players Association in the Illinois Legislature as one unlikely element of a compromise proposal to end a nearly two-year fight over the state’s budget.

The Bears are leading other Chicago sports franchises in backing a measure that would reduce a former player’s ability to tap into workers’ compensation after a career-ending injury. They want to cap certain payments to athletes at no older than 35 or five years after their injury. Currently they can claim benefits up to age 67, like other workers.

Neither the teams nor players’ advocates will say how much money is at stake. They agree it is not a relatively big pot – while theoretically some could claim millions, most if not all athletes settle their claims for reduced sums up front, the players association said.

Illinois schools adapting to new ‘asthma emergency’ law

CHICAGO – School personnel across Illinois are adapting to a new state law that requires districts to have an emergency protocol to deal with asthma emergencies.

Under the law, anyone who works with students must be trained to handle asthma emergencies. All children with asthma must have a written “asthma action plan” at the school as well, the Chicago Tribune reported. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed the legislation in August, and it went into effect Jan. 1.

Ex-Illinois prosecutor’s 2nd murder trial set next week

QUINCY – A retrial is set to begin next week for a former Illinois prosecutor charged with first-degree murder for the 2006 death of his first wife.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reported that Curtis Lovelace’s second murder trial is scheduled to start Feb. 27 in Sangamon County.

The former Adams County assistant state’s attorney was arrested in 2014 and accused of suffocating 38-year-old Cory Lovelace in their Quincy home.

Lovelace said he discovered her dead in bed after he dropped their children off at school. His first murder trial ended with a deadlocked jury.

“The savings to these (team) owners are negligible whereas the benefits to these players are everything,” Richard Gordon, an attorney who represents NFL players, told The Associated Press.

Napoleon Harris, a former NFL linebacker and now a Democrat in the Illinois Senate, opposes the provision.

He said it would unfairly “carve out” professional athletes from laws meant to protect employees.

“It almost feels like players are being used,” Harris said. “The owner’s not limping after the game, but the owner’s collecting billions of dollars in profits.”

Metra buys shooting range for its police officers

BLUE ISLAND – Officials with Metra said their police officers likely will start training at the Chicago commuter rail line’s own shooting range this spring.

Metra Police Chief Joseph Perez told the Daily Herald that the department is waiting for a concrete pad to be installed at the range, which is located in the southern Chicago suburb of Blue Island.

The agency bought the range for $509,000. Metra directors approved funding for the facility in November. It can be used year-round because it has heating and air conditioning. It consists of two joined steel shipping containers.

Officials said police spent about $120,000 in overtime on firearms training last year.

Officials said the new range will eliminate those costs. Metra officers used to train at Chicago and Illinois state police facilities.

Trump looks to move past controversial month

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – As President Donald Trump begins his second month in office, his team is trying to move past the crush of controversies that overtook his first month and make progress on health care and tax overhauls long sought

Both issues thrust Trump, a real estate executive who has never held elected office, into the unfamiliar world of legislating. The president has thus far relied exclusively on executive powers to muscle through policy priorities and has offered few details about what he’ll require in any final legislative packages, like how the proposals should be paid for.

The White House also sent conflicting signals about whether the president will send Congress his own legislative blueprints or let lawmakers drive the process.

White House chief of staff Reince Priebus told The Associated Press that he expects a health care plan to emerge in “the first few days of March.”

Pressed on whether the plan would be coming from the White House, Priebus said, “We don’t work in a vacuum.”

On Sunday, White House advisers held a three-hour meeting on health care at Trump’s South Florida club, their third lengthy discussion on the topic in four days. Gary Cohn, the former Goldman Sachs banker now serving as Trump’s top economic adviser, and newly sworn in Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin have been leading talks with Republican lawmakers and business leaders on taxes. Neither man has previous government experience.

Republicans long blamed Democrats for blocking efforts to overhaul the nation’s complicated tax code and make changes to the sweeping 2010 health care law signed by President Barack Obama. But with the GOP now in control of both the White House and Congress,

The president spent more time publicly fighting the media than selling Americans on his vision for a new health care law. “Obviously with the White House staff, you’re able to walk and chew gum at the same time,” Priebus said. “The economic team isn’t screwing around with the legal case and the lawyers aren’t screwing around with tax reform.”

One of the biggest questions on Capitol Hill is how involved

Trump plans to be in legislative minutia. One GOP leadership aide whose office has been working with the White House described the president as a “big picture guy” and said he expected Trump to defer to Capitol Hill on health care in particular. The aide was not authorized to speak publicly and insisted on anonymity.

Priebus said he expects Congress to pass both a tax package and legislation repealing and replacing Obama’s health care law by the end of the year.

But the White House’s outward confidence belies major roadblocks on both matters.

After spending years criticizing “Obamacare,” Republicans are grappling with how to replace it and pay for a new law. While some lawmakers worry about getting blamed for taking health insurance away from millions of people, others worry the party won’t go far enough in upending the current system.

“My worry now is that many people are talking about a partial repeal of Obamacare,” said Rep. Rand Paul, R-Ky. “If you only repeal part of it and you leave it some sort of Obamacare light, which some are talking about, my fear is the situation actually gets worse.”

High court weighs case of Mexican boy slain across border

WASHINGTON – Sixty feet and the U.S-Mexico border separated the unarmed, 15-year-old Mexican boy and the U.S. Border Patrol agent who killed him with a gunshot to the head early on a June evening in 2010.

U.S. officials chose not to prosecute Agent Jesus Mesa Jr. and the Obama administration refused a request to extradite him so that he could face criminal charges in Mexico. When the parents of Sergio Adrian Hernandez Guereca tried to sue Mesa in an American court for violating their son’s rights, federal judges dismissed their claims.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday is hearing the parents’ appeal, which their lawyers said is their last hope for some measure of justice.

The legal issues are different, but the Supreme Court case resembles the court battle over President Donald Trump’s ban on travelers from seven majority Muslim nations in at least one sense. Courts examining both issues are weighing whether foreigners can have their day in U.S. courts.

Privacy experts also are watching the case because it could affect how courts treat global internet surveillance, particularly when foreigners are involved.

It’s there that the “Fourth Amendment question in Hernandez seems to matter most,” George Washington University law professor Orin Kerr wrote on the Volokh Conspiracy blog.

The Fourth Amendment protects against unreasonable searches and seizures.

Precisely what happened in the cement culvert that separates El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, is in dispute, although the competing

accounts are legally irrelevant to the court’s decision.

Sergio’s family said he was messing around with his friends that day, playing a game in which they ran down the culvert from the Mexican side and up the American side to touch an 18-foot fence. Mesa arrived on a bicycle and detained one person while the others scampered back across the culvert, actually the dry bed of the Rio Grande River. He then shot Sergio as the boy ran toward a pillar supporting an overhead rail bridge. Mesa and other agents who arrived on the scene rode away on their bikes, without checking on the boy or offering medical aid, the family said.

The Justice Department said Mesa was trying to stop “smugglers attempting an illegal border crossing” and fired his gun after he came under a barrage of rocks. Mesa argues in his court filings that Sergio was among the rock throwers.

But Robert Hilliard, the family’s lawyer, said U.S. officials met privately with the parents to explain the decision not to prosecute Mesa and told them that their son had not thrown rocks. A cellphone video appears to show that Sergio was running and trying to hide before he was shot.

Had Sergio been shot a few feet to the north, he would have been on American soil and U.S. courts would be open to his family, Hilliard said. There’s no dispute that Mesa was on the U.S. side of the border, he said.

If the family is kept out of court, Hilliard said, the Supreme Court will be saying “that 100 percent of the conduct of a domestic police officer in the United States is unconstrained by the U.S. Constitution.” The family is seeking at least $10 million, Hilliard has said.

BRUSSELS – After President Donald Trump’s raucous first month in office, Europeans have reacted with demonstrations, counter-barbs and sheer angst that a century of trans-Atlantic friendship may be sinking.

“Too much has happened,” European Union leader Donald Tusk said Monday, “for us to pretend that everything is as it used to be.”

The governments of some traditional allies have gone a step further, uniting with fundraising plans and a special conference to balance the new U.S. administration’s reverse tack from Barack Obama’s presidency on abortion policies.

Beyond Trump’s orders on immigration, few of the administration’s policies have unsettled many European nations as much as his ban on funding for international groups that perform abortions or provide information about abortions to women in developing nations.

Pence said that Trump sent him to Europe “to express the strong commitment of the United States to continued cooperation and partnership with the European Union.”

SYCAMORE – A long-standing car wash business on DeKalb Avenue has reopened under new ownership with updated washing equipment.

Sycamore $3 Express Car Wash began accepting cars at 1775 DeKalb Ave. on Feb. 3.

Owner Greg Barich said an updated car wash seemed like something Sycamore needed, and the location of the previous business had easy access and visibility for passing vehicles.

“We’re happy to be here and happy with the response so far,” Barich said.

“We look forward to being part of the community.”

General Manager Ryan Westerman said Sycamore Auto-Bath had been at the DeKalb Avenue location for about 30 years; the new ownership took over in March, and construction began in July.

Westerman said the old washing equipment, designed in the early 1980s, was becoming outdated. For example, the rims on newer cars with low-profile tires would get damaged.

“I call it an antique car wash,” he said. “It was a touch of service, automatic, and also self service; you basically pull in and wash your own vehicle by yourself.”

Westerman said the old equipment was also harder to replace when parts would break down.

“We found that it was time to essentially tear down, rebuild and upgrade, get more current,” he said. “A much more friendly car wash for all the new-

Ethanol, big player in renewable energy There has been so much buzz about solar energy the past couple of weeks in Kearney, Nebraska, that some among us may have forgotten about one of the most dominant and well-established sources of renewable energy – ethanol.

Across the United States, about 70 percent of all gasoline burned in everyday vehicles such as cars and light trucks is blended with ethanol, and of that, ethanol, about 2 billion gallons is produced by the Nebraska’s 25 plants right here in using corn produced right here.

We in farm country are big on ethanol because we know that using Nebraska corn to make it creates a higher demand for the grain harvested in our fields.

Ethanol plants operating in Nebraska consume about 700 million bushels of corn a year.

That’s such a significant demand that it now is difficult to imagine what might happen to the price of corn if ethanol plants weren’t distilling the grain into ethanol.

Ironically, some of the critics of ethanol claim that using so much corn to make fuel is driving up the cost of food, but that’s untrue. Corn used in ethanol doesn’t land on our dinner table.

It’s used for many other things, and one of the byproducts of making ethanol – distillers grains – is a fantastic feed for livestock.

There’s very little waste from the Nebraska-grown corn that goes into ethanol.

We’ve said a lot about the merits of ethanol, but what’s most important is that it’s a clean-burning fuel that reduces emissions almost 80 percent, and it does that by boosting octain without harming engines.

Lessons from former presidents

President’s Day may seem somewhat contrived, an attempt to work a three-day weekend into the month when our two greatest national leaders were born, with the goal of making February a little more tolerable. But somewhere under the annual glut of ads for improbable bargains, there’s real meaning to the day, especially in this year of rancor, division and shameless deceit.

It is to be found in the lives of the two men who are the focus of the holiday: George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Their examples have endured; when they cease to matter to us, we will be in trouble.

Washington’s most important contribution to the new nation may have come from the example he set. He was, in the words of historian David Hackett Fischer, a model of “integrity, self-discipline, courage, absolute honesty, resolve and decision, but also forbearance, decency and respect for others.”

This did not necessarily make him a popular figure with everyone. Rather, it made him an honored, respected

and trusted one – the only president to win every electoral vote in both of his elections and the one who set an important precedent by stepping down (with genuine relief) after two terms.

Washington had no need to talk of how “strong” he was. His strength was self-evident.

Lincoln was born poor yet proceeded to rise to the top with the kind of sureness and dignity that does honor to a democratic country. He had little formal schooling, but he educated himself into a command of the English language that puts modern speechwriters to shame. He was a practical politician and sometimes did things he found distasteful. But on the vital issues of his day, he was knowledgeable, eloquent and solidly principled. In a time when a large national party had been pushing to exclude the Irish Catholics and Germans pouring into the country, he voiced praise for immigrants.

A little more than a week before his inauguration, our new president announced he would leave the running of his business interests to his two

eldest sons. Not that he couldn’t handle everything himself, he assured us. “I could actually run my business and run government at the same time,” he said.

In the weeks since, it’s possible that he has learned, the hard way, that the presidency is not a part-time job.

We hope Congress also has learned something in the past month: that with truth, openness and integrity becoming scarce commodities in the White House, and with ethnic nationalist and other anti-democratic forces gaining in many countries, an inescapable challenge is looming before the House and the Senate, the same one presented to another Republican Congress 154 years ago by a president who always spoke with honesty and courage: “We cannot escape history,” Lincoln said then.

“We ... will be remembered in spite of ourselves. No personal significance, or insignificance, can spare one or another of us. The fiery trial through which we pass, will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation.”

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

In the House, Democrats need a net gain of 24 seats for control. But thanks largely to demographics, with Democrats clustered in central cities, Trump carried 230 congressional districts, compared with Clinton’s 205.

Democrats are talking of targeting the 23 Republican-held districts carried by Clinton, 15 of which have large numbers of college-educated whites.

They’ll have a test run in the April 18 special election to fill the Atlanta-area seat of Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price; previously heavily Republican, it gave Trump only a 1.5 percent margin.

But will the rage exhibited in the streets of Brooklyn and Berkeley reverberate in Buckhead? It’s certainly not likely to help the 12 incumbent House Democrats defending districts carried by Trump.

Currently, both sides are sticking with the approach they employed in 2016. Events can change attitudes, but at the moment, it looks like uphill sledding for the side that lost narrowly – but decisively – in November.

Media members need to return to the fundamentals

President Donald Trump, drowning amid the chaos roiling his White House after just a month on the job, made a grab for his most-familiar life raft this past week: The media.

Or, to put it more bluntly: Trump, backed into a corner by allegations of aides’ contacts with Russian intelligence officials, turned his full rhetorical firepower on the media – blasting the journalists who cover him as fundamentally dishonest, corrupt and an “enemy of the American People.”

Trump’s strategy is simple: Change the conversation from a losing one (why are there so many unanswered questions about his ties to Russia?) to a winning one (the media is terrible and out to get me).

The media shouldn’t fall for it.

No industry is more interested in itself than journalism. Maybe it’s all the English majors who populate our profession. Maybe it’s that we – OK, me – were nerds growing up and just like the attention.

Our tendency for navel-gazing is legendary. What are we doing? What should we be doing? Are we doing what we do right? What should we change? What shouldn’t we?

These are all worthy questions.

And ones we should ask. But, at the moment, they simply aren’t the most pressing questions facing the country.

So, what are? Well, for starters: 1. Who among the Trump campaign had conversations – knowingly or unknowingly – with Russian intelligence officials? What was the nature of those conversations? Are any of those people part of the Trump administration?

2. Why did Trump wait weeks to fire Michael Flynn as national security adviser despite knowing that Flynn had not told the truth about his talks with the Russian ambassador to the United States? Why was Vice President Mike Pence not told before he appeared on a Sunday talk show to defend Flynn?

3. When will Trump’s tax return audit be finished? And, if no specific timeline can be offered, can he pledge to release the returns publicly as soon as the audit concludes? If not, why not?

4. How, specifically, do Trump and congressional Republicans plan to replace the Affordable Care Act? And how will the new plan be funded?

5. Will congressional Republicans agree to fund the billions that the border wall is estimated to cost on the promise that Mexico will eventually pay us back for it?

You get the idea. Trump has said and done lots – and lots – of things since being sworn in as president. Some he has explained. Many he has not.

The job of the media when faced with so much uncertainty is not to focus on itself but to return to the fundamentals: ask questions, provide context, inform the public.

The best way to combat allegations – from the president and many of his supporters – that the media is “the enemy” is to simply put our heads down and do our jobs. We aren’t the story. The story is the story. This isn’t – and never should be – “Donald Trump vs. the media.” It shouldn’t be Trump vs. anything but how his proposals check out and how they will affect the lives of Americans.

One other note: Despite Trump’s

often-baseless claims about mistakes the media have made, he is not always wrong. We in the media do make mistakes. The less transparent we are about them, the more credence we give to attacks that we believe ourselves to be beyond reproach.

Don’t double-source stories.

Triple-source them. Or, in the case of The Washington Post’s big scoop on Flynn’s discussions with Russian Ambassador to the United States Sergey Kislyak about economic sanctions, nine(!)-source them.

And, when, inevitably, even those best practices produce an honest error, tell readers how it happened and why.

Trump’s election – and his aggressive anti-media stance – represents a fundamental challenge to journalism in the 21st century. That’s not a bad thing. Now is the time to return to first principles: Find out what happened.

And why. Nothing more, nothing less.

Amid the turmoil of the first month of the Trump administration, with courts blocking his temporary travel ban and his national security adviser resigning after 24 days, the solid partisan divisions in the electorate – modestly changed in 2016 from what they’d been over the previous two decades – remain in place.

That’s apparent in roll call votes in Congress. Republicans have almost unanimously supported administration policies and appointments (except for withdrawn Labor nominee Andy Puzder). Democrats have almost unanimously opposed them, casting more “nay” votes on the president’s Cabinet nominees than they have at any time in memory.

The same thing is apparent in polls.

Past new presidents have enjoyed honeymoon periods, with many opposition party voters giving them approval. Not so with Donald Trump.

The RealClearPolitics average of recent polls shows him with 44.9 percent approval (he received 45.9 percent of the popular vote in the November election) and 49.5 percent disapproval.

Even the ban on travel from seven Middle Eastern countries elicits a similar response in the polling – although a 57 percent majority, according to a Fox News poll, rejects the belief held by many liberal columnists and some federal judges that it amounts to the “Muslim ban” that candidate Trump

She missed nine of her first 10 shots in the first half – with the Sycamore defense collapsing on her when she got the ball and forcing several turnovers – but went 7 for 8 the rest of the way. She scored five points in Stillman Valley’s 7-0 run to take the lead coming out of halftime.

“I told her coming out of halftime, this is what separates good high school players from great ones, what you do in this second half,” Mellon said. “She came out and proved it.”

remaining, Stillman Valley went 6 for 6 from the foul line, and Maris Daleo added a fastbreak layup to seal the win.

It was a wild atmosphere on the night, Wickness said, saying that the game against DeKalb at the NIU Convocation Center was the only thing that came close to comparing with the energy – and volume – of the crowd. On multiple occasions, Wickness would be yelling out a play from the sideline but the noise from the crowd drowned him out.

“It was tough; there were a few times when our coach called out a play and we didn’t hear it at all,” Majerus said. “We didn’t hear what he said. Fortunately, we didn’t get a lot of those, but, yeah, communication was a key to the game, and we knew that coming into it.”

By the numbers: It’s the second time this postseason that the Spartans had trailed 4-2 after the first quarter. They also trailed by that score after one in their 33-18 victory over Burlington Central in the Wheaton Academy Regional semifinals. On Monday, Feuerbach made a layup 48 seconds into the game, and Sycamore wouldn’t score again the rest of the quarter.

Beyond the stats: Stillman Valley had advanced to the sectional semifinal after winning a thrilling 76-74 game in overtime over No. 1-seeded Rockford Lutheran last week in its regional championship.

They said it: “We’ve been in a lot of close games this year, but we haven’t been in a lot of close games that had this kind of atmosphere,” Wickness said. “It’s a whole different ballgame when you step up to this level. Overall, the girls left it all out there on the floor. I got nothing but great things to say about their effort, and nothing but great things to say about who they are as people and what they’ve meant to our program here.”

Up next: The Cardinals will play the winner of No. 1 Kaneland and No. 3 Rock Falls in the sectional championship at 7 p.m. Thursday at Kaneland.

MAPLE PARK – Stillman Valley girls basketball coach Bobby Mellon knows what Sycamore sharpshooter Kate Majerus can do.

As one of the coaches in her traveling team’s program, Mellon focused the Cardinals’ defense on Majerus and freshman guard Kylie Feuerbach in the teams’ Class 3A Kaneland Sectional semifinal Monday.

Although Majerus rained in shots in the second quarter, No. 4-seeded Stillman Valley used a rally in the fourth quarter to knock out No. 2 Sycamore, 42-32, in a game that was a one-possession contest for most of the second half.

“She missed her first couple shots, but I know she could go 0 for 4 and then 6 for 6 on any given night, she’s just that type of shooter,” Mellon said. “She did get some looks where our defense got broken down some and our rotations, but I think, for the most part, we did what we wanted.”

Majerus finished a team-high 16 points and went 4 for 12 from 3-point range for the Spartans, who closed out their season 20-10 – their fourth straight season of 20-plus wins.

Feuerbach, the team’s talented young point guard, had 13 points on 5-for-19 shooting, eight rebounds and three blocks.

The Cardinals (22-9) spent plenty of time in a triangle-and-two defense – with a defender each shadowing Majerus and Feuerbach. The only other player to score for the Spartans was senior Taryn Mathey, who connected on a 3-pointer in the third quarter.

Majerus had a look from the corner with less than two minutes remaining in the game that would have made it a one-point deficit, but her 3-pointer rimmed in and out.

It was a low-scoring game early, with the Cardinals only leading 4-2 after the first quarter, before Majerus got hot in the second quarter. After missing her first five attempts of the game, she finished with 11 of her 16 points in the second quarter and connected on four straight shots – including three 3-pointers and a long jumper.

Hiawatha big man and offensive focal point Paul Rubelt got into early foul trouble, picking up his third foul with 6:37 remaining in the second quarter, grounding the Hawks’ offense. He finished with four points.

“Playing our man-to-man – that’s keeping the ball out of their hands and only letting them have one-and-done,” Giants coach Todd Mathis said about his defense. “In the second quarter, we gave them 10 points, all secondary shots.

And that was the only quarter we lost.”

“We weren’t ready to go at the tip,” Hawks first-year coach Rob Moulton said. “We got punched in the mouth

right away (in the) first quarter (and) second quarter. We got (in) a big hole.

It takes more than a half of basketball.

We weren’t ready to meet their intensity until the second half.”

By the numbers: The Hawks came out sluggish at the beginning of each half, scoring only four in the first quarter and seven points in the third.

Beyond the stats: Things got a little chippy at the end with Hiawatha tagged for two flagrant fouls as the game was out of reach and frustrations were running high.

They said it: “Outside the lines of basketball, you have to win those with grades, with attitude, with commitment. And I think that is one thing moving forward that we are going to win,” Moulton said on his plan for the team going forward.

Kruger an expensive luxury Team will have to make a decision on center eventually

mlazerus@suntimes.com BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Marcus Kruger used to exist in a blissful bubble of oblivion, free from the inexhaustible news cycle and rumor mill of the hockey world. When it came to hockey news, Kruger usually was the last person to know, which is just how he liked it.

Then Niklas Hjalmarsson got a Twitter account.

“Me and Hammer sit together on the bus, and when something big happened before when he didn’t have Twitter, he didn’t find anything out, and I didn’t find anything out,” Kruger said.

“Now he’s on there all the time. It’s almost like having a new guy on the bus or something. But it’s good. Because he can sort through everything for me and keep me updated.”

So far, none of that news has involved Kruger himself. With the March 1 trade deadline almost a week away, Kruger’s not going anywhere. But it’s entirely possible he’s going somewhere eventually. Kruger carries a cap hit of $3.08 million, and

Thomas also said he could see how he and Butler’s games would comple-

“Marcus does lots of small things that people don’t see really well, especially in the the defensive zone,” Hossa said. “He kills penalties and plays against top lines, and you might not see it all when you’re sitting in the stands, but we see it on the team. He’s a good player.”

With eight players locked in with no-movement clauses, the Hawks don’t have a lot of flexibility when it comes to the expansion draft. Kruger is a candidate to be left exposed, and Vegas could alleviate the Hawks’ cap concerns by plucking Kruger instead of a cheaper option such as, say, Trevor van Riemsdyk, or a veteran role player on a new contract, or an experienced minor-leaguer.

But although Dennis Rasmussen and Tanner Kero both are solid bottom-six centers, Krugers don’t come along all that often.

“Organizationally, that’s something

that’s looked at a lot, whether it’s the money side of it, the business side of it, the hockey side,” coach Joel Quenneville said. “There have been some (expansion draft) discussions, but it’s a little bit out there and really not on my front burner.”

But the Hawks will have to make a difficult decision on Kruger eventually, because he somehow is both invaluable and overpaid – a luxury. And one the Hawks might not be able to afford.

“I’ve never been a guy that’s really paid much attention to stuff like that,” Kruger said. “That’s just how I am. If you have Twitter, you probably see a lot of rumors and stuff like that. I’m pretty protected from that. I just focus on myself, and whatever happens, happens.”

“I control what I can control,” the three-time All-Star has insisted several times throughout the season when asked about the trade rumors that have swirled around him since June.

But Butler also has a good enough rapport with the Bulls’ Gar Forman that although he doesn’t fully trust everything the general manager has said to him over the years, he does believe him on one key front: The Bulls aren’t looking to move Butler by Thursday’s trade deadline.

A source again reiterated Monday that although the Bulls have taken numerous calls on Butler, they haven’t been making them.

Basically the same message they’ve been delivering to Butler, who privately feels like he won’t be moved unless “something crazy happens” between now and the deadline.

The only team really capable of that type of “crazy” would be Boston, not only because they own numerous firstround draft picks over the next few seasons, but also because they have young, NBA-ready talent to also package for Butler.

And it isn’t like they are shy about adding Butler to the mix, either.

“He’s got the full package,” Celtics All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas said of Butler over the weekend. “He can shoot. He can make plays for others. He

can defend. He’s got good size. And he works hard. One thing I do know about him is he’s a hard worker, and at the beginning of his career he wasn’t really given anything. He didn’t have the opportunity to play – we kind of have

Butler going to Boston would undoubtedly at least make the Celtics a bigger threat to dethroning the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference, but a threat and actually pulling it off are two different things.

What can’t be overlooked, however, is where the Bulls’ currently stand.

At 28-29, they will start the final push for a playoff spot in the No. 7 spot with 25 regular-season games left, and close out April with that schedule working in their favor.

The last five games for the Bulls include at New York, at Philadelphia, at Brooklyn, home to Orlando and then home to Brooklyn in the regular-season finale. It couldn’t set up any better.

Playoffs matter to this front office, evident by how it often points out all the playoff appearances they’ve made in the past decade, despite only reaching the Eastern Conference finals only once.

Moving Butler would make the playoffs a much tougher road to reach, while also assuring that Dwyane Wade would exit stage left this offseason. Basically, the two best recruiters for free agents that the Bulls have.

That doesn’t mean the Bulls will be silent come Thursday, either.

While Butler is the most attractive piece to move and one who has by far the biggest return, Taj Gibson, Nikola Mirotic and Rajon Rondo each is a possibility to be elsewhere. Both Gibson and Mirotic are hitting the free-agent market this summer, while Rondo hasn’t been happy with his back-up role since the beginning of January.

Collins confident he can be catcher

First-round pick wants to prove doubters wrong

GLENDALE, Ariz. – First-round draft choice Zack Collins can hit. Whether he can catch at the major league level will have to be proved, some scouts say.

The White Sox believe he will. Collins, as you’d expect, is confident he can.

“A lot of teams were kind of doubting whether I could catch,’’ Collins said.

“So I just work my butt off to prove people wrong. Honestly, that’s the best thing people could have said about me – that I couldn’t catch.’’

One of the best hitters in the draft, the Sox selected the left-handed hitting Collins 10th overall in June, drooling at the luxury in a good bat wrapped around a premium defensive position and checking off two organization needs: catching and left-handed hitting.

Collins, who projects as a 25-homer guy, some say, might make a swift climb to the majors like left-handed hitting college catcher Kyle Schwarber did because of his bat.

“They kind of expect you to catch as well as you can hit, which is tough to do,’’ Collins said. “We’re kind of in the same boat, although he’s more prestigious right now. Follow his same path but stay behind the plate.’’

Sox catching coordinator John Orton, for one, believes Collins will. When the Sox drafted Collins, Orton went to watch him catch for the University of Miami.

“I heard all the talk of worries about his catching and said, ‘I’m going take

a look at this guy,’ ’’ Orton said. “After the first inning, the way he received and moved back there, I said, ‘Yeah, this guy can catch at the higher level.’ ’’ Orton first looks at hands, how a catcher moves behind the plate, footwork and receiving. Those things looked good to him, and he believes Collins will be a good pitch framer because he has good hands. The skill that Collins lacks now is throwing. Not arm strength, but “the timing of the footwork and when the ball comes out of the hand where the throws are accurate,’’ Orton said.

Orton said throwing, while import-

ant, is not at the top of the list of priorities for a catcher. And it’s a teachable skill, and Collins strikes him as a learner.

“He’s a smart kid, wants to learn, and learns quick, which is a sign of intelligence, obviously,’’ Orton said. “Passionate.’’

And motivated.

“I’m here to prove everyone wrong who thinks I can’t catch at the bigleague level,’’ he said. “That’s my position, and that’s where I want to stick.’’

Collins is rated fourth among catching prospects behind the Cardinals’ Carson Kelly, the Indians’ Francisco Mejia and the Phillies’ Jorge Alfaro.

Kelly and Alfaro already have had a taste of the majors.

Collins, who hit .258 with six homers over 36 games at Class A Winston-Salem after producing a .362/.544/.668 slash line with 16 homers at Miami his junior season, figures to begin the season at the high A level again.

For now, he’s soaking in his first major league camp.

“It’s been amazing,’’ Collins said.

“Honestly, it’s kind of surreal to me.

I’m so young, and just a couple years ago I was watching Todd Frazier, and watching James Shields throw (as a fan). Now, sitting here in the same locker room as them and playing with them, it is crazy to me.

“I’m excited for this year. We have a lot of great young talent, and it’s a very exciting time to be a White Sox.’’

Newcomer Holland sees strong team chemistry

GLENDALE, Ariz. – If there is something to be said for team chemistry and esprit de corps, the White Sox got off to a good start during their first week of getting to know each other.

“The camaraderie has been fantastic,’’ newcomer Derek Holland said.

“The way these guys are interacting with each other – chemistrywise – I don’t know a lot of these guys, but you can tell there is not one person that doesn’t want to be around another one.’’

Holland, 30, who signed a one-year deal with the Sox after pitching for the Rangers for nine seasons, said “team chemistry” on the AL West division winner was second to none.

“Coming from teams I’ve play with, that’s the most important thing,’’ Holland said. “That can take you far. I know

how early it is, but we’re in a good position with the group of guys we have in here now.’’

The rebuilding project entered into by general manager Rick Hahn is evident with prospects such as Yoan Moncada, Lucas Giolito, Michael Kopech, Reynaldo Lopez, Zack Derek Holland Collins moving about.

It’s also evident in the low win projections for this team, which could become a rallying cry.

“Nobody is picking us to do [anything], and I love that,’’ Holland said.

Garcia weight loss: Avisail Garcia took about two weeks off during the offseason, playing winter ball in his native Venezuela, working on his defense and losing 14 pounds before coming to spring training. Down to 254 pounds, the right fielder wants to get down to 248 by the end of spring.

It’s an important year for the 25-yearold who hit 12 homers, drove in 51 runs and hit to a .245/.307/.385 slash line while providing below average defense in 2016, falling short of the high expectations that have always preceded him. Garcia did hit .355 with runners in scoring position.

“I do my routine every morning,’’ Garcia said. “After practice, I go back to the gym. When you work and believe in yourself nothing can stop you.’’

Geo squared: The clubhouse has catcher Geovany Soto and left-hander Giovanni Soto. And then there’s Lucas Giolito.

“We are pretty good friends, and it’s kind of surreal he has the same name,’’ Geovany Soto said.

“Hopefully, I can get a big check in his name and cash it.’’

Soto was with the Sox in 2015.

“Feels like I never left,’’ he said.

This and that: The Sox are scrapping the usual intrasquad game before Cactus League games begin Saturday. Manager Rick Renteria said the time will be used on drills instead.

Good to be back outside

After two days of rain and chilly weather, the Cubs were able to hold their first full-squad workout Monday.

“Even leaving this morning from the RV, it was nice,” manager Joe Maddon said. “It was warmer than I thought. It was good. We got our work in. Didn’t get everything in that we’d like to on the field, but plenty of hitting in the cages. The pitchers got to throw, and that’s the important thing.”

The main event was “live” batting practice, with pitchers such as Jon Lester and John Lackey throwing to Cubs hitters. The pitchers weren’t throwing full force, and the hitters knew what was coming, but it got everybody outdoors.

During parts of the batting practice, coaches yelled out situations – such as man on second and nobody out – so that hitters could practice advancing the runner. Lester threw to second-year catcher Willson Contreras, who is expected to take over for retired David Ross as Lester’s catcher. After Monday’s session, pitching coach Chris Bosio and catching coach Mike Borzello went over things with Contreras.

“Our pitchers looked good out there,” infielder-outfielder Ben Zobrist said. “They’re all just trying to get loose. They’re throwing 10 miles (per hour) slower than they normally do.

But yeah, it was a good day. It was fun.”

The Cubs also had fun with the morning stretch. Tim Buss, the team’s

strength and conditioning coordinator, dressed up in a top hat and bling – a whole bunch of neck chains – while carrying a walking stick.

The garish get-up, Maddon said, was to preach the importance of humility to the defending world champions.

“I give the guy credit,” Maddon said of Buss. “On a daily basis, he’s able to pull something off that makes the guys laugh, and it’s a great way to start the day.”

This could be fun: Recently acquired lefty Brett Anderson sounds like he could be a quotable guy. He threw a bullpen session in cool weather Monday morning and returned to the clubhouse lathered up.

“I can sweat in a snowstorm,” he said.

On his personality, he likened himself to laconic pitcher Lester, with one difference.

“I’m more like Lester except for my social media,” he said, explaining he’s sarcastic on Twitter. “I kind of sit back and observe. I’m not a huge talker in person, but I can kind of show some of my personality and candor on some of those things.

“You look at stuff and you get to a new team and say, ‘Oh, man, did I say anything about anybody that’s going to [tick] them off and whatnot?’ The only thing I said about the players is that Kyle (young pitcher Hendricks) looks like he could have some Oreos and milk after pitching in the World Series.

That’s kind of the guy he is. Just the calmness and stuff he shows is something we can all try to strive for.”

“Whoever the fifth starter is, it’s going to be a formidable rotation just based off the track record of all the guys we have in camp. It’s good to have healthy competition.”

Manager Joe Maddon saw Anderson in 2009, when Anderson came up with Oakland and went 11-11 with a 4.06 ERA. Maddon said he is not concerned about the results early in spring training games.

“To pitch well early is not a concern; health is,” Maddon said. “Guys with the great track record like that, and he’s not that old, you watch him (in the bullpen) and he looks fine.

“I don’t get overly enamored with spring training evaluations. I learned that years ago that you can be seriously fooled, both ways.”

Anderson has a history of injuries.

He had elbow surgery in 2011 and the first of two back surgeries in 2014.

He is the son of former Oklahoma State baseball coach Frank Anderson, and he said his status as a baseball lifer helped in the tough times.

“I’m a baseball guy,” he said. “It kind of sounds cliché, being a baseball player. I don’t have as much service time as some of these guys, but I’ve been at the field probably more so than any of these guys just because I’ve been going to the field since I could walk and talk and annoying college kids.”

Cubs strength and conditioning coach Tim Buss dressed up with a top hat, some chains for bling and a walking stick to add some fun to Monday’s workout.

MESA, Ariz. – Brett Anderson says he likes Cubs fans, and he wants Cubs fans to like him, too.

The bearded left-hander wasn’t feeling quite so charitable in October when he was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. After the Cubs won Game 6 of the National League Championship Series to eliminate the Dodgers at Wrigley Field, Anderson went on Twitter to take some Cubs fans to task.

“Real classy cubs fans throwing beer in the Dodgers family section. Stay classy (bleeping) idiots,” he tweeted.

After working in the bullpen Monday morning, Anderson said he didn’t mean all Cubs fans, only the few who he said threw beer on the visiting team’s family members.

“Obviously, I wasn’t in the stands,” he said. “There were some beers thrown where the families were. I’m going to stick to my family and my side. Rightfully so, some of the Cubs fans were mad.

But I wasn’t calling out the whole stadium. It was just whoever threw the beer on the family section.

“Everybody has their fans, and they’re kind of rowdy and unruly. That just happened to be a situation. You like those people on your side. I played in Oakland, and they had some of the rowdiest fans in the playoffs. The Cubs fans, just visiting there, it’s a fun crowd to play (before) because it’s an intimate setting and you feel like they’re right on top of you and so loud. It will be fun to have those people on your side.”

Anderson signed a one-year contract with the Cubs in January. Now that he’s a Cub, Job 1 is trying to win a spot in the rotation as the fifth starter. He is battling with his catch-playing buddy, Mike Montgomery, another lefty.

Health will be the issue to watch with the 29-year-old Anderson. He appeared in only four games for the Dodgers last season because of arthroscopic surgery in March to repair a bulging disk in his back. For his career, Anderson is 38-43 with a 3.86 ERA in 127 games (115 starts) with Oakland, Colorado and the Dodgers.

“You’re not out there trying to blow the doors off in a bullpen (session),” he said. “You can only do so much. Your adrenaline is only so high, especially at 7:45 (a.m.). I like my chances. I think I’m a good pitcher when I’m healthy. That’s been the biggest issue my whole career.

McNeal scores 37 points in G-K boys basketball loss to Clinton

The Genoa-Kingston boys basketball team closed out its regular season with a 72-66 loss to Clinton on Monday in Genoa.

Genoa-Kingston’s Justin McNeal scored 37 points and went 12 for 16 from the foul line.

The Cougars outscored the Cogs, 22-9, in the fourth quarter after Genoa-Kingston led, 42-30, at halftime.

Genoa-Kingston (16-12) will play Sycamore at 7 p.m. March 1 in a Class 3A Sycamore Regional semifinal in Sycamore.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Former Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Charismatic, whose bid for the Triple Crown ended with a dramatic leg injury as he neared the finish line in the Belmont Stakes, has died at a thoroughbred retirement farm in Kentucky.

The striking chestnut horse that won the first two legs of the Triple Crown in 1999 was found dead in his stall Sunday at Old Friends farm near Georgetown, Kentucky, the farm said. The stallion ate all his food Saturday and looked fine, Blowen said Monday. The cause of death is unknown and a full necropsy was being done. The farm said Charismatic was 21.

Chase Elliott landed the pole for the second time in as many years, and fan-favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. made his triumphant return to racing by securing the No. 2 starting spot. Earnhardt missed the final 18 races of 2016 because of nausea and vision and balance issues after at least the fifth concussion of his career.

Troubling turn: Although much went right for Hendrick, the four-car team found cause for concern.

Seven-time and defending series champion Jimmie Johnson spun twice in Turn 4 during the Clash at Dayto-

na on Sunday, adding to the team’s recent woes in the highbanked corner. Teammates Elliott and Earnhardt had similar issues in the 2016 Daytona 500, both crashing in the final turn.

So what might have seemed like a one-year fluke now is a full-fledged trend for Hendrick.

“It’s a concern,” said Alan Gustafson, crew chief for Elliott. “We have things in place to try to improve that, and we’re very aware of it.”

Earnhardt sounded like getting the turn straight would be a priority during the week.

“We’re looking at our notes from over the years,” Earnhardt said, pointing specifically to 2015. “We’ll look at what we did then and what we’re doing now and sort of go through the process of elimination, and

Patrick has been solid at times at Daytona since her rookie season, when she won the Daytona 500 pole and led five laps. She finished fourth at the Clash, a needed confidence boost after a dismal 2016. She finished 24th in the standings and failed to post a top-10 finish.

Keselowski and Hamlin crashed on the last lap, allowing Patrick to sneak through for the best finish of her NASCAR career.

“I will say that I got a little lucky, but there’s a lot of that in speedway racing,” she said.

Monster debut: Kurt Busch’s car was the center of attention before the Clash. His car’s make? A Ford. The model? Try models, the bevy of Monster Energy girls who posed for pictures with bystanders.

Busch is sponsored by Monster Energy – but the energy drink company also took over this season as title sponsor for the Cup series.

Its debut was a monster dud.

Busch hit the wall a few laps into the race, the green squiggly M logo on the hood crushed as the car was towed to the garage.

Other than the Monster girls, there has been little promotion by the company.

Monster isn’t selling drinks at concession stands, and there are no ads spread around the track.

There was a billboard in the fan zone promoting NBC’s TV coverage that still had the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series logo plastered in the middle.

Gonzaga, Villanova, Kansas stay 1-2-3 in AP poll

For the third straight week, Gonzaga, Villanova and Kansas are the top three teams in The Associated Press college basketball poll.

It is the fourth week at No. 1 for Gonzaga (28-0), the only unbeaten team in Division I. The Zags received 59 first-place votes from the 65-member

national media panel Monday.

Villanova (26-2) received five firstplace votes, and Kansas (24-3), which beat West Virginia and Baylor last week, got the other No. 1 vote.

The three teams from the Pac-12 – Arizona, UCLA and Oregon – are fourth through sixth. Louisville is seventh, followed by North Carolina, Baylor and Duke.

Baylor, which lost to Texas Tech and

Kansas, dropped five places from fourth.

Wichita State makes its first Top 25 appearance since last season. The Shockers replace South Carolina, which fell out after a five-week run in the poll.

Kentucky moved up two spots to 11th and is followed by West Virginia, Florida, Purdue, Cincinnati, Wisconsin, SMU, Virginia, Florida State and Saint Mary’s.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Optimism abounds after the opening weekend at Daytona International Speedway, especially for NASCAR’s top teams.

Teamwork at Joe Gibbs Racing appears as solid as ever despite adding rookie Daniel Suarez to the mix, evidenced

by Denny Hamlin, Suarez, Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch running 1-2-3-4 for much of the Clash at Daytona.

Former series champion Kurt Busch was the first to wreck under the new rule and praised the extra evaluation.

“There was an individual that met me out by the car, rode with me in the ambulance and again met with the doctors and just went through different sequences to check all of the different vitals and we were released,” Busch said.

“It’s just a little bit of an upgrade. You can tell that they’ve made an effort, and it’s nice to have that security.”

Many universities are using private planes

BOSTON – Once seen as a luxury of the corporate world, private planes are becoming increasingly common at U.S. colleges and universities as schools try to attract athletes, raise money and reward coaches with jet-set vacations.

Some schools spend millions of dollars a year flying their coaches and executives on scores of trips around the country, and some pass the cost on to students and taxpayers.

The Associated Press requested documents from dozens of public universities and found that at least 20 own or share ownership of planes for school business, often employing a few fulltime pilots to fly them. Many others charter private flights through outside companies.

Flight logs show that, at times, the aircraft are used for purposes unrelated to university business.

At Ohio State University, which leases one plane and partly owns another, football coach Urban Meyer and members of his family took 11 personal trips last school year, including a vacation in Florida, a weekend getaway to Cape

Cod and a spring break in South Carolina. The university’s cost: $120,000. Add Meyer’s 15 recruiting trips in the same planes during that period, and the price tag jumps to more than $350,000.

Meyer declined to comment.

Some private colleges, which aren’t subject to open-records laws, also own planes.

Colleges defend the costs, saying coaches and top administrators need to travel more than ever, while commercial airlines are offering fewer flights.

Some say it’s economical for officials who often fly on short notice or to towns that are far from a major airport.

But some critics condemn such spending as a luxury at a time when tuition continues to rise.

“The students are paying for it or the taxpayers are paying for it, and it’s usually the students,” said Richard Vedder, an economist and director of the Center for College Affordability and Productivity in Washington, D.C. Universities often use planes for athletic recruiting, mostly football and basketball, and to shuttle administrators on trips to woo donors or lobby lawmakers.

Some of the nation’s largest schools,

such as Penn State and the University of Texas, own planes, as do many smaller schools, including the University of Wyoming and the University of Central Missouri.

The price for a private plane usually reaches into the millions, climbing as high as the $8.4 million that the University of Florida’s athletic association paid for an eight-passenger jet in 2011.

Then there are operating expenses such as fuel and maintenance, which at Ohio State cost $1.6 million last school year.

Each flight often averages more than $1,000 an hour, far exceeding the cost of a commercial flight.

Purdue University, for example, sent a plane to Providence, Rhode Island, last year to bring alumnus and former NFL lineman Matt Light to Indianapolis for an athletics meeting and then flew him back, at a cost of $15,000.

A commercial flight between those cities typically costs less than $400 roundtrip.

The University of Kansas chancellor and two staff members were flown to the NCAA basketball tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, for $10,000 last year. Officials at the University of Tennessee routinely fly between Knox-

ville and Nashville, a drive of less than three hours.

“With our executive administration, their time is valuable enough that certainly the plane use is warranted,” said Ron Maples, interim treasurer for the University of Tennessee. He added that the school’s yearly spending on flights, about $700,000, is “hardly a blip” in the overall budget.

Costs for chartered flights can add up fast, too. The University of Minnesota doesn’t own a plane, but spent $2.9 million chartering flights last year.

To some critics, big spending on airplanes is fine as long as taxpayers don’t foot the bill. And some schools, including Ohio State, say private donations and athletic revenue pay for flights.

But at many, such as Kansas and Tennessee, they are covered by budgets that include tuition and tax dollars.

“If they’re being funded by taxpayers at all, it falls outside the lines of what’s proper and ethical in my opinion,” said Lawrence McQuillan, a senior fellow at the Independent Institute, a conservative think tank in Oakland, California.

“Some of this is just personal vacations, which to me is completely improper for taxpayers to fund.”

Doctors should provide quality care Dear Doctor: A recent study found elderly patients with female doctors fared better than those who were treated by men. I wonder – what do Dr. Ko and Dr. Glazier think about these results?

Dear Reader: You’re referring to the results of a study performed by Harvard researchers, published in December in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine. Our reactions follow later.

Researchers analyzed data from more than 1.5 million Medicare patients 65 and older who were hospitalized between January 2011 and December 2014. What they found was that patients whose doctors were women were less likely to be readmitted to the hospital in the next 30 days, and had lower mortality rates than the patients who were treated by men.

This particular study didn’t look into the reasons why, but the authors cited prior studies that found differences in how women and men practice medicine. Specifically, the research suggests female doctors are more likely to adhere to clinical guidelines, provide more preventive care and communicate more effectively than their male peers.

The Harvard study was prompted, in part, by the fact women doctors now account for one-third of all physicians and one-half of medical students. Researchers were interested to learn whether career interruptions to start a family, the challenges of home-life balance, and the resulting increase in parttime employment might compromise the quality of care.

So what did we think of the results?

Dr. Glazier: My gut reaction is that it is very hard to generalize. As a patient, I have had both men and women who were extraordinary and compassionate physicians. And I have had teachers, mentors and colleagues who are exceptional, irrespective of their gender.

What I would say is it is paramount to find a doctor with whom you connect both personally and professionally, someone who is compassionate, kind and smart, all qualities that transcend gender.

Dr. Ko: As a female physician early in my career, I am naturally delighted to hear the findings. Medicine historically has been dominated by men, who have been seen as more intelligent and more capable than women. The results are validating and confirm my role to perform this noble work.

The authors admit they can’t answer the question “Why?” But since prior studies suggest women tend to communicate better, listen more effectively and have more emotional intelligence, then the message here is communication is key. Our training of young physicians should focus on honing these skills and exemplifying these qualities.

The danger is some patients may oversimplify these results, assuming that to prevent death and re-hospitalization, they need a female physician. But the truth is there are as many male physicians who are compassionate communicators as there are women physicians who lack those qualities.

What I do hope is all physicians will take a cue from these results to embrace the qualities and behaviors that may contribute to better care.

DEAR ABBY Because I had a promiscuous Jeanne past prior to Phillips getting married, it was understandable my husband and I have gone through some rough patches.

It’s been three years since our wedding, and he still can’t let it go sometimes. A recent argument just escalated into his calling me a whore and stupid. We have a beautiful little girl together, so it’s not like I can just up and go whenever I want.

When is enough, enough? Where is the point that I can give in to the thought that I can’t do it anymore? Or is this just what marriage is?

We already have done counseling, and it just made it worse. Since the counseling you had didn’t work, you now must decide whether you need to try again with a different therapist or talk to a lawyer. If I were living like this, I know what I would do, but the only person who can decide what’s best for you and your daughter is you.

Dear Abby: My husband and I have been friends with a bachelor for 30 years. Over the past year we have had a problem with him that seriously is straining our friendship. Good bridge players keep their eyes open and get on with it. For example, look only at the South hand. West opens one diamond, North overcalls three spades and East passes. What should South do now?

North’s bid shows a respectable seven-card suit and some 6-10 highcard points. South’s choices are pass, three no-trump, four clubs (assuming it is forcing), four spades and five clubs.

Pass is far too cautious. Three no-trump looks like a sensible shot to me. Four clubs does not serve much purpose, unless South would pass a four-spade rebid. Four spades could work, but partner will ask where your trumps have gone! And if five clubs makes, surely three no-trump will as well.

What should South do in three no-trump after West leads the diamond queen?

If the clubs are 2-2 or 3-1, three no-trump is easy. If West has all four clubs, South is in trouble. But if East holds them all, declarer is safe as long as he takes the first trick with his diamond ace. He cashes the club ace and sees the bad break. Then he plays a diamond to the king, takes a club finesse and runs for home.

Note that four spades can go down three, and five clubs is not much better.
