Kraft Heinz withdraws $143B bid to buy Unilever The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Ketchup maker and packaged food giant Kraft Heinz has withdrawn a $143 billion offer to buy Unilever, backing away after the mayonnaise, tea and seasonings maker rejected the bid as too low.

The companies announced the decision Sunday in a joint news release, saying that Kraft Heinz has “amicably” abandoned the offer.

The deal would have combined Kraft Heinz brands such as Oscar Mayer, Jell-O and Velveeta with Unilever’s Hellman’s, Lipton and Knorr. The merged company would have rivaled Nestle as the world’s biggest packaged food maker by sales.

Analysts said Kraft Heinz, co-headquartered in Chicago and Pittsburgh, is still in the market for acquisitions. The fact that it bid for all of Unilever and not just its food business indicates that Kraft Heinz is potentially open to acquiring other packaged consumer goods, one analyst said.

Unilever, which has a head office in London, also has a stable of personal care brands

such as Dove soap. Unilever rejected the offer on Friday, but despite that, Kraft Heinz said at the time that it was still interested in the deal.

Such acquisitions might not lead to big changes that customers would notice on supermarket shelves, but shifting tastes are partly driving deal-making in the food industry.

Part of the challenge is the proliferation of smaller food makers marketing products that seem more wholesome, which makes it harder for the established companies to drive up sales simply by selling more of well-known products or by raising prices, as they have in the past.

“That obviously has its limits,” said David Garfield, head of the consumer products unit at consulting firm AlixPartners, said last week.

Instead, major packaged food companies are being forced to dig deeper to find cost efficiencies or tap into new markets, Garfield said. That can include mergers that result in consolidated manufacturing systems, or that give companies access to distribution networks in regions of the world where they don’t have a big presence.

High school a capella musical group wins international quarterfinal

Shaw Media correspondent DeKALB – Enharmonic Fusion, the DeKalb High School mixed a cappella group, will move on to the semifinal rounds after earning a first place standing Saturday night. They scored 421 points, the highest out of all the groups across the nation competing in the quarterfinal round.

The 18-member group competed against six other schools from Illinois, Wisconsin and Ohio at the International Championship of High School A Cappella Midwest Quarterfinal. Varsity Vocals produced the event, which was held at DeKalb High School.

Senior Grace Klonoski was recognized as an outstanding soloist at the competition. She earned the same honor in New York at the international competition in spring 2016.

Members of the group said they felt very connected to the music. After an election that divided much of the country, the group gravitated toward a set of music that they believe sends a hopeful message about current events.

“The first song is about your freedom – that you want it and are going to fight for it,” said Olivia Klonoski, a sophomore. “The middle song is about the election and what Obama’s thoughts [might have been], and the last is you’ve gone through a hard time and are going to overcome that hard time. It’s a good set.”

Senior Ben Vance said that once the madrigal season concluded, “we’ve been thinking of songs since the fall semester, but we really got down to business at the beginning of this semester. Pretty much from the beginning of January, every night, we’ve been trying to get this together.”

Vance said he thought the songs chosen for the set told a story effectively this year. He sang a solo titled “Seriously” in the middle of the performance.

“It’s our first set that has a message, and it’s really relevant,” Vance said. “I think it helps us to perform it with emotion because we’re putting on a message we really care about.”

Fellow DeKalb senior Destinee Feliciano agreed with Vance.

“It’s been really easy for me to connect with the music,” Feliciano said.

“At the end, we’re saying ‘no matter

what we go through now, there’s going to be a light at the end. We’ll get through it, because that’s what we do.

I feel hopeful.’ ” Varsity Vocals producer Elise Hackl said that because of the growth of a cappella in the region, Varsity Vocals had to split the Midwest competition into two this year. That growth has resulted in tougher competition for the groups.

“The talent level is unmatched,” Hackl said. “The directors are building friendships with each other and the camaraderie they have is trickling down to the students, and it’s making everybody better. It’s really a great community.”

She said this year’s show was one of the best she’s seen.

“This year, I have had more emotional experiences [watching the sound-checks] than I have had in all my years judging and producing combined, and it’s because of the amount of talent these groups have,” Hackl said. “I’ve never had full-body goosebumps until today.”

as performers.

“In many years past, both in time we’ve advanced and times we haven’t, sometimes their energy gets the better of them,” Erikson said. “I thought this group has a lot of experience, and it was one of the times where they’ve had the most composure under pressure. I was pleased with that.”

The students have practiced for almost 90 hours since the beginning of

the year. They began working together during a summer camp in August.

The class will meet Monday night to go over notes again.

“Next, we need to get some rest and then refocus and, if they want, prepare for the next round,” Erikson said.

The semifinals will be at 7 p.m.

Friday, March 3, in the Auditorium Theater of Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Random Acts of Kindness Day honors couple

Dawn Weber describes Feb. 21, 2011, as the worst day of her life.

It was the day her daughter, Lexi Weber, and Lexi’s boyfriend, Tim Getzelman, were killed in a car crash in Sycamore. Both were 21.

But instead of staying home and crying all day, Dawn Weber and Tim’s mother, Tamara Getzelman, decided to mark the anniversary by creating Random Acts of Kindness Day to keep their children’s memory alive.

“Every year, when the anniversary comes up, it’s such a depressing time of year,” Weber said. “We wanted to mark the date by doing something nice for someone. We wanted to make the day a little happier.”

On the first anniversary of Tim and Lexi’s death, their families and friends participated in a blood drive. Weber said that although the blood drive was a good idea, it was an event limited to people who lived in the area. The next year, they designed and sold T-shirts and performed random acts of kindness in Lexi and Tim’s memory.

This year is the fifth annual RAK Day and sixth anniversary of Tim and Lexi’s deaths. By selling T-shirts, hoodies and sweaters in advance, $1,326 was raised for the Lost Limbs Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps families of amputee children who are in need of medical and prosthetic assistance. In previous years, RAK Day raised funds to help rescue dogs, the Sycamore Fire Department and Feed’em Soup.

Getzelman said that by doing random acts of kindness, she is reminded of something Tim used to say: “Remember, your attitude can set the tone for someone else’s day.” She remembers when Tim had his family stand outside by their American flag, hold hands and pray on the evening of 9/11. Random Acts of Kindness Day was created in their memory. his funny side and how his impressions of Jim Carrey and Jack Nicholson made tears run down her face and her stomach hurt.

“RAK holds a special place in my heart because of what Tim and Lexi both represented, as young as they were,” she said. “They had a tremendous amount of love for their families and were proud of their community, wanting to serve in the best way they knew how. … It was natural for Tim and Lexi to be naturally kind in their short time on this earth.”

Tim and Lexi met while they were students at Northern Illinois University.

The couple dated for three years, a relationship their friends described as “perfect” because they were “head over heels in love.”

Lexi was an elementary education major and was on track to graduate in December 2011. She was a student teacher, had volunteered at Feed’em Soup and loved children as well as animals. NIU posthumously awarded Lexi her bachelor’s degree.

Tim started firefighter training

during his junior year of high school.

He became a volunteer at the Burlington Fire Department, the same department where his grandfather once served as a lieutenant. Tim also was an intern at the Sycamore Fire Department. Two weeks after his death, his family learned that Tim had been accepted to serve on the fire department in Madison, Wisconsin.

Brian Thompson of Burlington went to the same church as Tim, taught him karate and was in charge of the fire academy Tim attended. Thompson was on call at the Burlington Fire Department the day of the crash and was at the scene.

“I have never met a person who loved life more than Tim,” Thompson said. “He was funny, loved to tell jokes and had a great sense of humor. He was a truly remarkable, intelligent young man. Lexi and Tim were two of the brightest stars I’ve ever known.”

Random acts of kindness are not limited to Feb. 21; they can be completed any day, anywhere during the year.

Thompson helped create fire scholarships in Tim’s name, and every year on

the anniversary, he lays flowers at the scene of the crash. He also has bought gift cards and coffee for others and donated to charities.

“By doing random acts of kindness, we’re not losing them, they’re still here with us,” Thompson said. “It keeps us grounded and reminds us that there is good in the world. We can rally together.

By doing good things, it’s a great reminder of who they were and what they meant to each and every one of us.”

For RAK Day, Amanda Smith, Lexi’s friend from high school and college, has bought groceries, planted trees, adopted a turtle and seal in Lexi’s name and donated animal food and money to a local animal shelter. Smith now lives in New York. She said that although she lives far away, she is glad she still is able to participate in honoring her friend’s memory anywhere she lives or travels.

Samantha Stammet, Lexi’s friend since first grade, now lives in Chicago and performs random acts of kindness throughout the year.

“No act is too small,” Stammet said.

“It was part of Lexi and Tim to give to others. They were such kind people.

Our random acts of kindness takes one of the worst days of our life and makes it a little better. We’re putting smiles on other people’s faces, spreading love and joy, spreading who Lexi and Tim were.”

Weber hopes that each year the event grows, helping and doing good deeds for people not only in the DeKalb County community, but anywhere and everyone in the world, allowing the memory of Tim and Lexi to live on.

“Doing random acts of kindness is a way to make a sad day less painful,” Weber said. “It never gets any easier. I always ask, ‘What if?’ Would they be married, would they have babies? You drive yourself crazy dwelling on the negative.

You have to push yourself forward and never give up. I just hope they look down on us and smile.”

Raised in Park Ridge, Illinois, Virginia was the eldest child of James, a Sunbeam sales representative, and Mildred, a homemaker and diehard Cubs fan. She was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated from Park Ridge’s Maine Township High School in 1944. A first job was selling greeting cards at Marshall Field & Company in Chicago’s Loop. She next attended Northwestern University’s nursing program, where she received her B.S.N. in 1949.

She was a member of the Chi Omega (women’s) Fraternity, made lifelong friendships, and fondly recalled a six-week train trip across Europe with one of her nursing friends.

Introduced by Will’s sister Martha, also a nurse, Virginia and Will met in Chicago. Will was immediately struck by her grace and beauty, and felt surprised and lucky to have his feelings reciprocated. Their marriage in 1951 was the beginning of 65 years together. In their early years they lived in Sendai, Japan, where Will was stationed during the Korean War. From 1953 to 1984, they lived, raised their five children, and were integral members of the community in Sycamore, Illinois. They moved to “Beach Home” in Northport, Michigan, in 1984.

Virginia relished her community involvements.

Among them in Sycamore were the Federated Church, Sycamore Hospital Auxiliary, Parent-Teacher Association, and role of “picture lady” in Southeast Elementary School. She was a founder and first president of CAP (Concerned About People), a club to encourage inter-racial engagement and understanding. In Northport, she was a founding member of the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Foundation, the Northport Area Heritage Association, and ShareCare of Leelanau. She was extremely active at Trinity Church, including serving as “moderator,” Sunday school teacher, and member of the bell choir; she was involved in and past president of the Northport Women’s Club, the “Walkie Talkies” hiking group, and many other local efforts. She was also a founding member of the Waukazooville Athletic Club & Literary Society.

Virginia was a woman of many hobbies and interests, including piano, cooking, swimming, gardening, family genealogy, crossword puzzles, and photo albums of her children’s lives. She often excelled at these pursuits. She was a multiple winner of the Federated Church

Bake-off, for instance, and was accomplished on the piano playing favorites such as “Rustle of Spring,” “Malagueña,” and Christmas carols.

Virginia is survived by her husband, Will; five children, Priscilla J. Thomas of St. Paul, MN, Roy S. (Susan) Thomas of Tampa, FL, Barry L. Thomas of Matthews, NC, Andrea R. (Rick) Boudah of Northport, Paul W. Thomas of Chicago, IL; 10 grandchildren, Jean (Trent Wells) Porter, Robert Porter, William Thomas, Richard (Jennifer) Zakrzewski, Savanna Thomas, Anthony Esquivel, Rosalie Esquivel, Michael Esquivel, Alia Thomas, Zayn Thomas; a great grandson, Ethan Zakrzewski; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, and extended family members. She also is survived by sister, Judith M. Chaires of Bradenton, FL; and was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, James E. Lehan.

A celebration of Virginia’s life and burial in Leelanau Township Cemetery will be scheduled for the summer.

WINFIELD – A $2.5 million financial gift presented on Valentine’s Day will support the expansion of the cutting-edge Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute into DeKalb.

The expansion will include a new hub at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield and clinical care services at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb as well as Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

As a result of the donation, six niche centers within the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute will be developed in the western suburbs, with a focus on coronary disease, heart failure, heart rhythm disorders, heart valve disease, preventative cardiology and vascular disease.

The $2.5 million donation is composed of many unrestricted gifts to the Northwestern Memorial Foundation from donors in the community to Central DuPage and Delnor hospitals over the years.

When a surprise freezing rain event made travel in the metro-east a nightmare during rush hour Dec. 16, Tyler, the interim commander of Illinois State Police District 11, made sure he was out on the roads supporting his troopers and assisting motorists. Even though he could have easily pulled rank and stayed at district headquarters, Tyler never made that an option.

“My first job is to be a trooper and to serve my community members,” Tyler said. “The rank doesn’t matter. Serving others is the most important. Whether I’m making a decision about major operations or whether I’m out changing a tire, it’s going to get the same energy. I was going to be out there as long as my guys were out there.”

GOP rips Illinois comptroller for buying used $32K SUV

CHICAGO – Illinois Republicans criticized Democratic Comptroller Susana Mendoza on Sunday for spending $32,000 on a used SUV when the state is months behind in paying its bills, an attack her office dismissed as an attempt to distract from GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner’s “failure.”

The comptroller’s office, which controls the state checkbook, bought the 2016 Ford Explorer from a central Illinois dealership and paid for it in full in January, shortly after Mendoza took office, the Chicago Sun-Times first reported.

Illinois GOP Chairman Tim Schneider on Sunday called the purchase “outrageous,” noting Illinois has $11 billion in overdue bills because of the state budget stalemate.

That has led to social service agencies and other vendors going unpaid or waiting months to get money that’s owed them.

“I don’t think buying a 2016 SUV for the comptroller’s office is a priority,” Schneider said. “I think that can wait.”

Tyler caught the law enforcement bug at an early age while growing up in tiny Hazelhurst, Mississippi, a town of 4,000 in the southern part of the state. A state trooper befriended a 15-year-old Tyler, who went on ride-alongs and learned what it took to be an officer.

“I knew right then and there that I wanted to be that man,” Tyler said.

Mendoza’s office said the money came from an administrative fund that’s not used to pay state bills and isn’t related to the bill backlog.

Director of Communication Abdon Pallasch said Mendoza has reduced the office fleet from nine to eight vehicles and the SUV replaced a car that was inoperable. He said Rauner has a larger state vehicle fleet, and noted state agencies controlled by Rauner have spent $11 million on vehicles over the past two years, not including leases.

“The governor’s party’s phony outrage at one purchase of a used car instead of the state’s $11 billion dollar backlog of bills he refuses to address is a transparent attempt to silence the state office-holder who has been most vocal in holding the governor accountable for his failure to do his job,” Pallasch said.

Mendoza, who defeated former GOP Comptroller Leslie Munger in November, has repeatedly blasted Rauner as responsible for Illinois’ nearly two-year budget fight.

That has made her a frequent target of the Rauner-funded state GOP, which has linked the former Chicago city clerk to Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Illinois are monitoring the use of a synthetic opioid they say was recently introduced in the area and poses a major threat of overdose.

Williamson County officials said U-47700 is eight times stronger than heroin and can be purchased online from Chinese manufacturers at a low cost.

The Southern Illinoisan reported that the drug, also referred to as “U,” “U-4,” “Pink,” or “Pinky,” was introduced throughout Illinois last year. It has claimed the lives of about 100 people in Illinois since then.

Williamson County Coroner Mike “Junior” Burke said he can confirm one case in which the synthetic substance was identified in toxicology reports.

“I’ve been fortunate that I’ve only had one,” Burke said. “And I know it’s coming. It just hasn’t hit here yet, at least in Williamson County.”

Williamson County State’s Attorney Brandon Zanotti said that case is under investigation.

The drug can be ingested, snorted and incorporated into heroin, which increases the chance of an overdose.

“What they do, cutting it into heroin, it lowers the cost for the dealers while also making it more potent, and I guess gives more of a euphoria for the person buying it,” Zanotti said. “The issue we have is heroin on

Illinois Ag Department to talk plan to fight gypsy moths

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Agriculture is holding a series of meetings to discuss plans to fight the leaf-eating gypsy moth in northern Illinois.

The moths are particularly destructive to oak trees, but will feast on more than 250 species of trees and shrubs. Large populations can strip plants bare, potentially leading to tree death.

Agriculture Department officials plan to apply naturally occurring bacteria across thousands of acres beginning in mid-May to prevent male moths from breeding. The bacteria will be applied via helicopter or airplane near LaSalle, Plano, Wilmington, Yorkville and Starved Rock State Park.

The state said it’s considered safe but people may want to stay indoors for 30 minutes after it’s applied.

The public is invited to learn more during open houses in Pontiac, Oglesby, Oswego and Freeport.

Draft DHS guidelines seek to aggressively detain immigrants

WASHINGTON – The Homeland Security Department has drafted sweeping new guidelines aimed at aggressively detaining and deporting immigrants living in the U.S. illegally, according to a pair of memoranda signed by DHS Secretary John Kelly.

The memos dated Friday seek to implement President Donald Trump’s broad directive to crack down on illegal immigration. Kelly outlines plans to hire thousands of additional enforcement agents, expand on the priority list for immigrants marked for immediate removal and enlist local law enforcement to help make arrests, according to a person briefed on the documents, who confirmed the details to The Associated Press.

“The surge of illegal immigration at the southern border has overwhelmed federal agencies and resources and has created a significant national security vulnerability to the United States,” Kelly wrote.

He said apprehensions on the southern U.S. border had seen an additional surge of 10,000 to 15,000 a month from 2015 to 2016.

The memos leave in place one directive from the Obama administration, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allows young people who were brought into the country illegally as children to stay and obtain work permits. The program has protected about 750,000 immigrants since its inception in 2012. Trump previously has indicated his desire to end the program, but at his press conference last week indicated that he would “show great heart” toward the program.

The memos were reported first by The Washington Post and other news organizations. A U.S. official familiar with the documents did

not dispute the accuracy of the memos signed

by Kelly, which originally were scheduled for release Friday before they were postponed for White House review.

A White House official said the White House has raised objections with the documents and is working with DHS to finalize the policy. The official was not authorized to discuss the process publicly and insisted on anonymity.

Under the draft guidelines, Kelly seeks to “expeditiously hire” 10,000 more enforcement agents and 5,000 Border Patrol officers.

Seeking to fulfill Trump’s campaign promise to build a wall along the Mexican border, Kelly also calls on Customs and Border Protection to “immediately begin planning, design, construction and maintenance of a wall, including the attendant lighting, technology (including sensors), as well as patrol and access roads.” He describes the wall as necessary to deter illegal immigration and calls it a “critical component” of Trump’s overall border security strategy.

He says the department also will prioritize for more immediate removal those who have been convicted of a crime; charged with a crime; committed fraud in connection with a matter before a government agency; abused any program related to public benefits; or have not complied with orders to leave the country.

Joanne Lin, senior legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union, criticized the proposed guidelines as a Trump style of immigration enforcement in which “due process, human decency and common sense are treated as inconvenient obstacles on the path to mass deportation.”

“The Trump administration is intent on inflicting cruelty on millions of immigrant families across the country,” she said in a statement.

12 Former DeKalb doctor gets 7 years

in prison for illegal prescriptions

acady@saukvalley.com ROCKFORD – A former DeKalb doctor will serve more than seven years in federal prison for running a pill mill that prosecutors said contributed to the deaths of three people.

Richard H. Ng, 65, was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court to seven years, three months for dispensing a controlled substance outside the course of professional practice and without a legitimate medical purpose, as well as sentenced to three years for tax fraud.

The sentences will be served concurrently. Once out of prison, he will be on supervised release for three years.

He also must pay the Internal Revenue Service $611,412 in restitution.

Ng pleaded guilty Sept. 20, and must report to federal prison April 7. His attorney, Tina Rippy, suggested he serve his time at a prison nearest his home.

Judge Frederick Kapala said the court would take that into consideration.

Although Ng might be able to earn some “good time” credit while he is imprisoned, there is no parole in the federal system.

tenced Jan. 23 to 2 years’ probation and ordered to pay the IRS $95,971 in restitution for tax fraud.

According to court documents, Ng admitted to prescribing at least one controlled substance to each of his patients after every visit, even though he saw signs they were misusing those substances.

Three patients who overdosed had those drugs in their bodies, which contributed to their deaths, investigators said.

The court could not determine that Ng was the sole reason for the deaths of these patients but that he was a “significant contributing factor,” Kapala said.

As for the fraud charge, the Ngs diverted clinic receipts into their personal bank accounts and failed to report more than $1 million in clinic income from 2008 to 2011.

The Ngs owned and operated clinics in DeKalb and Sterling.

They were arrested May 15, 2013, but had been under investigation since well before December 2011.

Ng offered his “deepest apologies” to the families affected by his actions. He said he accepted responsibility for the mistakes he made and said he had no explanation for his behavior.

The Fed should raise the interest rates in March

Inflation in the U.S. rose in the year that ended in January by 2.5 percent – faster than expected, and well above the Fed’s target of 2 percent. It’s the latest sign that the economy needs a rise in interest rates when the Federal Reserve’s policy-making committee meets in March.

Before the new inflation number, most analysts had thought the next rise would come later in the year. Afterward, it looked like a closer call, with trades in derivatives suggesting a probability of roughly 40 percent that the mid-March meeting would raise rates. That should make it easier for the Fed, which doesn’t like to surprise investors, to do the right thing.

The central bank has long said it will be patient about getting monetary policy back to normal, not wishing to stifle a recovery that’s been no better than tepid. But it also has said that its interest-rate decisions won’t be tied to a fixed schedule, but will depend on data as it arrives.

The new figures tilt the balance in favor of further tightening, sooner rather than later.

Granted, the signal from inflation is more ambiguous than you might think. The unadjusted index of consumer prices is distorted month to month by swings in volatile energy and food prices. The Fed prefers to keep an eye on a different measure of inflation – the price index of personal consumption expenditures. This went up by 1.7 percent, excluding food and energy, in the year to December, still below the central bank’s inflation target.

In addition, the current low unemployment rate of 4.8 percent most likely exaggerates the tightness in the labor market. As the economy expands, some of the many workers who’d previously dropped out of the labor force altogether (and therefore don’t count as unemployed) have started looking for jobs. This is why, despite rising employment, the jobless rate actually edged up in January. An expanding labor force gives the economy a bit of additional headroom.

Yet bear in mind that the Fed’s current policy stance is anything but neutral. The short-term interest rate stands at 0.5 percent to 0.75 percent – low by historical standards – and the Fed’s balance sheet, swollen by large-scale bond-buying operations, continues to supply strong monetary stimulus. A quarter-point rise in rates next month would only make the Fed’s policy a little less expansionary.

A balance has to be struck. Moving too soon risks choking off some jobs that might otherwise be forthcoming. But waiting too long could leave the Fed no choice but to tighten policy abruptly amid fears of a surge in inflation – and that would be much worse for jobs.

There’ll be fresh data between now and the next Fed meeting, but as things stand, choosing not to nudge interest rates higher in March would be taking patience too far.

Heaven help the little guy in this administration With Andrew Puzder’s decision to withdraw from consideration as secretary of labor, advocates for America’s working men and women are doing a little victory dance.

Progressive senators, labor unions and other allies of the working class believe they have managed an important win against an administration of robber barons.

Speaking to low-wage workers rallying near the Capitol on Thursday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., said, “Our voices have been heard. That man will not be secretary of labor.”

Unfortunately, the celebratory dance is premature.

Just weeks into his tenure, President Donald Trump has already stuck a sharp stick in the eye of his working-class supporters, and he won’t stop just because one nominee was upended. Puzder’s departure changes nothing.

The nascent Trump administration has generated so much controversy, so much chaos, so much scandal in its first month or so that it’s hard to keep up with all the damage being done to democratic norms and to basic decency.

In a normal administration, the new president already would be undone by his administration’s clearly inappropriate (and quite possibly treasonous) dealings with a foreign rival, Russia.

But this is no normal administration, and these are no normal times.

In this hyper-partisan era, when the president and his henchmen dismiss clear and obvious facts, Republican officeholders and their constituents are standing by Trump’s perfidy.

It doesn’t seem to matter that he already has betrayed the promises he made to the white working class, whose economic anxiety is credited with vaulting him into the Oval Office.

Just take a look at the number of hands Trump has hired from Wall Street. He blasted Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton throughout the campaign for her ties to the nation’s wealthy bankers, claiming she would be “totally controlled by Wall Street and all the people that gave her millions.”

But in a stunning display of cynicism, even by political standards, Trump named a wealthy former Goldman Sachs partner, Steven Mnuchin, as secretary of the treasury. He has named Goldman Sachs’ chief operating officer as the head of his Council of Economic Advisers. Indeed, Trump will have one of

the wealthiest Cabinets in recent history, having named a lineup of billionaires and millionaires to fill out his team.

And what is that administration doing, with the aid of a Republican Congress?

Why, they are busy rolling back the regulations that President Barack Obama put in place to prevent another financial crisis of the sort that struck in 2008.

The financial meltdown was brought to you by Wall Street greed, but its misery was visited on ordinary Americans, who lost their jobs, their homes and their life savings.

Trump’s allies couldn’t wait for the chance to reclaim the freewheeling environment that allowed them to make that mess.

And that’s just the beginning.

Speaker Paul Ryan and a coterie of ultraconservative Republicans in Congress have long wanted to take an ax to the government programs that aid the poor, including food stamps, housing assistance and school lunch programs.

Never mind that those programs have lifted more white Americans out of poverty than black or brown ones, according to a new study by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a left-leaning think tank.

Trump may block Ryan’s efforts to trim Social Security, but he is likely to allow him to diminish other parts

voting for a true servant leader. Servant leadership has a lengthy definition I’m sure, but in reality its meaning is simple – humility and sacrifice.

Anyone who has met our congressman knows his good-natured smile, firm handshake, and his way of giving you his full attention even if you are just some college kid … humility.

Sacrifice means many things to different people, but few would dispute that writing Uncle Sam a blank check constitutes sacrifice.

Nor could they deny that to come to the aid of a stranger who was being assaulted by a knife-wielding man, sacrificing at least sound body and potential-

ly life itself, requires bravery and genuine concern for one’s fellow citizens.

The officer’s oath and that of Congress are taken to the Constitution (and by extension the people) and before God. I’ve often looked to Kinzinger during moments of uncertainty on the national stage and found that his actions indicate that his loyalty is to the people – giving weight to the words “I’m an American before I’m a Republican…”.

He’s willing to stand up to whoever and whenever it is necessary for the good of the people – never mind the risk he runs of angering powerful people within his party.

of the social safety net.

When all is said and done, then, Puzder’s departure will matter little.

Yes, his record showed a corporate leader whose rhetoric was uniquely reprehensible. He once said he preferred robots to human workers because “they’re always polite, they always upsell, they never take a vacation, they never show up late, there’s never a slip-and-fall, or an age, sex or race discrimination case.”

But Puzder’s confirmation was not thwarted because of his egregious record on labor. He ran into trouble because he supports a generous policy on immigration and also hired an undocumented immigrant as a housekeeper, and several Republican senators objected to that.

Puzder’s replacement, Alexander Acosta, hails from an immigrant background (his parents came from Cuba), and he is a former U.S. attorney.

But there is no reason to expect him to have any great compassion or concern for the little guy. Trump’s white working-class supporters are in for nothing but disappointment.

To the Editor: Nations require guardians; citizens require good representation; young people require good role models; and in Adam Kinzinger our district is blessed with all three.

Congressman Kinzinger has always been an impressive man who was clearly and rapidly headed for great things. To defeat an incumbent in a local election is no small task, to do it at 20 years old while pursuing a degree in business and fulfilling ROTC obligations is astounding.

Every time I’ve cast a ballot for Kinzinger, I’ve been confident that I was

his staff are outstanding at constituent services. He cares about what we have to say and how we feel. If he didn’t, a man with his talents would be gone from the hill and on to profitable ventures.

I also know that this is a very busy time in Washington for someone on two committees and a handful of subcommittees.

I’ve no doubt that he makes every effort to meet and listen to constituents as directly as possible whenever possible.

Thank you for being a leader we can take pride in, sir, and a happy early birthday to you.

Join the Sycamore History Museum on March 2 to discover a little-known story about the connection between a dispute regarding the Sycamore Fairgrounds and barbed wire.

Rob Glover, executive director of the Glidden Homestead and Historical Center, will lead this brown bag lunch program.

The DeKalb County Agricultural Society, formed in 1858, originally met on a Sycamore Farm. But a dispute over the site of the fairgrounds in 1861 led to

the formation of a rival agricultural society that met in DeKalb.

The fairgrounds in DeKalb later became the earliest portion of Northern Illinois University. The full story will be presented during Glover’s talk.

The Sycamore History Museum’s brown-bag lunch program is on the first Thursday of the month.

The March 2 program starts at noon at the DeKalb County Community Foundation’s Freight Room, 475 DeKalb Ave. in Sycamore.

PALATINE – Nothing like two individual state titles and a second-place showing as a team to erase any lingering regrets.

A day after falling out of contention for a state title at the IHSA state gymnastics tournament, the DeKalb-Sycamore co-op secured its second-place finish for the second year in a row, with senior Aleah Leman winning the vault and sharing the title on the bars Saturday.

“Yesterday there was a little bit of a sense we could have done more,” Leman said. “We had some regrets here and there; I know I had some about my performance. But this morning we got up and knew we had a chance at second place. We came out and got it, and now we can celebrate another big trophy.”

Leman scored a 9.875 on the vault to start the day, upping her score from the preliminary round and pushing the Barbs’ lead over thirdplace Glenbrook South.

The Barbs finished with a 146.95, while Prairie Ridge scored 148.8 for its third straight title. Glenbrook South was third with a 146.675.

Leman followed with a 9.525 on the bars, tying with Glenbard West’s Maddie Diab for the title. Last year, a slip on the bars in the preliminaries cost her an all-around title. This year, she finished fifth in the all-around on Friday, her third straight year taking a medal in the all-around. She also won an individual state title in each of her three prep seasons – winning the vault as a sophomore and the floor last year.

“Being a little off yesterday, she really just let it go today,” DeKalb-Sycamore coach Andy Morreale said. “She had a great day. Two for two.”

Sophomores Lauren Leman and Madison Hickey had the chance to medal for the second straight year, but both came up short. Lauren Leman, who medaled on the bars last year, finished in a tie for seventh with a 9.45. Hickey, a medalist on both the floor and bars last year, tied for seventh on the vault with a 9.6.

Morreale said sometimes it’s hard to compete as a sophomore than as a freshman.

“Sometimes freshmen, they just don’t know what to expect,” Morreale said. “They’re young and they don’t know any better. As a sophomore, they know what it’s about and the pressure, and it’s how they respond

The Barbs came into the preliminary round Friday without a loss on the season, with either Hickey or Aleah Leman winning the all-around each time out.

“I think the girls were a little disappointed (after Friday), and I told them we had a great season,” Morreale said. “We went undefeated (until state) and took second place in the state. ... I think the first one is always the hardest. Prairie Ridge, they always tried to get past Carmel, I think.

I think it’s tough because you press to get that first one. To come out in second is still a heck of an accomplishment.”

It wasn’t the state title that Morreale and his team thought they had a good chance of winning, but it was another second-place showing for a team that is losing only two seniors.

“I’m very proud of them,” Aleah Leman said. “We get to take home a second big trophy and go home and celebrate and I get to enjoy the last DeKalb-Sycamore’s Madison Hickey connects with the vault Saturday. few hours with them as a team.”

Lopez 2nd at state; 6 other area wrestlers also medal

sports@daily-chronicle.com CHAMPAIGN – Whenever DeKalb wrestling has been mentioned over the past several weeks, the conversation often has promised to include freshman Fabian Lopez.

The growth, maturity and poise he’s shown in situations in which he should not have those things have transcended the 120-pounder into some state-wide notoriety.

Cruising to regional and sectional titles, Lopez found himself at the IHSA State Wrestling Meet just one win shy of an individual state title.

Though his 19-3 technical fall loss to now 43-0 Michael McGee ended his season in a negative way, on paper, it was just that for the composed Lopez.

“I don’t take this as negativity,” said Lopez, who finished his freshman season at DeKalb with a 43-6 record.

“That’s a guy who has been in the final three times, has won twice now, and he’s been there and done that, you know. I’m taking this as fuel and motivation to come back and get that bracket board next season.”

Sure, DeKalb coach Sam Hiatt would have liked to see his freshman standing just a few inches higher on the podium at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center.

But, he also hadn’t thought for a second that the state final loss took anything away from what Lopez was able to accomplish with three years remaining.

“Words can’t express how proud we are of him,” Hiatt said. “Unfortunately, only one guy is able to raise his arm at the end (as the winner), and we know Fabian will be there one day.”

DeKalb’s Blah Danweih also qualified for the state meet at 170 pounds, but fell in his opening match.

One team that had to deal with the Barbs and Lopez a couple times this year in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference action was Kaneland.

The Knights had some success of their own at the state meet, qualifying and having five wrestlers medal – the most ever in both cases for the program.

Senior Riley Vanik capped his Kaneland career with a 5-4 decision in the Class 2A 182-pound third-place match.

“It means the world honestly,” Vanik said. “After losing the semifinal match, the hardest thing to do was to bounce back, but you have to do it. I’m so happy right now.”

Hayden Patterson finished his career with a sixth-place finish at 170 pounds, while sophomore Nathan Orosco had his own sixth-place finish at 106 pounds.

“I knew from the beginning of the year that we had five guys that could qualify and medal down state,” Kaneland coach Joe Orosco said. “They just kind of continued to do their thing this weekend. As soon as we realized we had five guys coming out of sectionals, we knew they could place if they wrestled how we know they can.”

Sycamore’s Artimus Cunningham agreed he would have wanted his final high school match to have gone differently, finishing fourth overall after beating Patterson in the consolation semifinals.

Through the mental and physical grind that the state meet presented, Cunningham walked away with no regrets.

“The coaches were stressing to me all week that this is it,” Cunningham said. “There’s no more second chances

While many local seniors said their goodbyes in their final individual

high school matches, another bright spot shined on Lopez, whose future improvement would mean only one thing.

“Next year… you can bet I’m coming after it,” he said.

During the 2015-16 season, home teams in MAC play finished with a record of 69-39 – good for a winning percentage of .638. This season, home teams are just 48-36 (.571) so far during conference play.

“Everybody gives their best shot, everybody comes and competes,” NIU senior Marin Maric said. “Everybody wants to win. We play pretty well on the road, too. We should protect our home, ... we should play better at home.”

The teams that were the most dominant at home last season seemed to have lost their punch – aside from Akron, which is 7-1 at home this season after going 9-0 a year ago.

Kent State was 7-2 at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center last season, but is 3-4 at home this year.

For as poorly as the Huskies played on the road last season – they were 1-8 in conference play – they’re 3-3 away from home this season and close out the regular season with three of their final four games outside of DeKalb.

“We’re going to figure it out and go get ourselves a road win now,” said Montgomery, whose Huskies play Tuesday at Central Michigan.

On the women’s side, there’s an obvious strength on the road by the top three teams in the conference. Firstplace Central Michigan (12-2 in MAC West) is 5-2 away from Mt. Pleasant, while NIU (11-3 in MAC West) is 6-0 away from DeKalb and Ball State (11-3 in MAC West) improved to 6-1 on the road with its 92-84 win over the Huskies on Saturday at the NIU Convocation Center.

“I think good teams need to be good on the road and at home,” NIU coach Lisa Carlsen said. “The three teams ... are arguably the best teams

in the MAC. I don’t think these guys view a home game and/or a road game any different in their preparation and if you’re going to be good, you’re going to have to win in any environment.”

The Huskies men’s basketball team has not played its best basketball in the final four minutes of games – especially at home – but went 2 for 4 with two 3-pointers by Austin Pauga and were 3 for 4 from the foul line down the stretch of regulation against Toledo.

With the loss, the Huskies have been defeated in five of their past six games in DeKalb. In the past two – Toledo and Ball State – the Huskies had the lead in the final minute before the opponent forced overtime and eventually won the game in extra time.

“Our margin to win is very small and you have to capitalize,” Montgomery said. “We have a young backcourt, so [the margin is] even smaller.”

Pirates hold off Spartans Kolberg takes 41st at state;

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Ottawa came into Sycamore with a stronger record, but narrowly escaped with the 48-41 boys basketball victory over the Spartans.

Ottawa (17-7 overall, 8-4 Northern Illinois Big 12) took a 15-10 lead in the first quarter and never trailed. The Spartans, however, managed to keep it close through the entire game.

Sycamore (10-5, 3-9) turned the ball over five times in the first quarter and another six times in the second. Ottawa was able to capitalize on those turnovers, taking a seven-point lead into the half. Sycamore’s defense struggled in the first half, as well.

“First quarter has been the worst quarter for us defensively,” Sycamore coach Ryan Picolotti said. “We are not quite ready to play and we dig ourselves a hole.”

Picolotti said Sycamore came into the game understanding that if it could slow down Ottawa’s top scorers they would have a chance. Ottawa senior

guard McKe Tucker entered the game as the Pirates’ leading scorer, averaging 20.7 points a game. Sycamore managed to slow him down, limiting him to 11 points. However, Wyatt Hill, who is the team’s second leading scorer, had a career night with 22 points. He went 8 for 8 from the free-throw line and 5 of 7 from 3-point range.

“The difference in the game? [Hill] shot the ball really well,” Picolotti said. “He was 4 of 5 in the first half and hit the one (3-pointer) in the fourth that really killed us.”

Sycamore started to cut the deficit in the third quarter. The Spartans outscored the Pirates, 12-8, in the third with half of their points coming from senior forward James Marcinkowski, who finished with eight points. Jack Mizgalski also had an impressive offensive game hitting five of his six shots for 10 points. Ty Sulaver led the Spartans with 11.

“We had our chances,” Picolotti said. “We just could not get over the hump. We can’t have that many turnovers early on.”

Buffalo Grove’s Jessica Soskich won the individual title by 17 pins, holding off a late charge from Hoffman Estate’s Amanda Richae, who outscored her by 75 pins in the final three games, including 235-195 in the final game.

Harlem won the team title with a 12,310, only 38 pins ahead of Lockport.

Lohse gets to state in two events: Riley Lohse of the DeKalb-Sycamore co-op swimming team qualified for state in two events Saturday at the St. Charles East Sectional.

Lohse won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.27 seconds, earning his trip to New Trier on Friday. He also finished the 100 backstroke in 50.83, earning the trip to the finale.

The Barbs finished with 130 points, good for fourth.

DeKALB – It’s been home, not-sosweet home for the Northern Illinois men’s basketball team this season.

A year after going an impressive 18-1 at the NIU Convocation Center and 8-1 at home in conference play, the Huskies suffered their latest loss in DeKalb, falling 88-80 in overtime to Toledo on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies (14-13 overall, 6-8 in Mid-American Conference West) are 9-7 this season at home – including 3-5 against MAC opponents.

“I think it’s just hard to win in general, whether at home or on the road,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said.

“Last year, we had three seniors who wouldn’t let us lose – (Michael) Orris, (Travon) Baker and Chuks (Ireogbu).

Maybe the team took it for granted, but it’s not just our conference – look at all the conferences. Everything is mumble jumbled. Don’t kid yourself, it’s hard to win anywhere.”

The Huskies are far from the only team to suddenly be struggling to pick up wins on their home floor. According to a report by Sports Illustrated, this season home teams around the nation are winning at the lowest percentage in 20 years.

Kane’s stick handling highlights offensive surge

mlazerus@suntimes.com BUFFALO, N.Y. – After he somehow slipped the puck past Buffalo goaltender Robin Lehner with a sneaky wrist shot from the right dot, Marian Hossa didn’t raise his arms in triumph, didn’t pump his fist, didn’t even smile. He just skated, almost sheepishly, toward the bench.

After he left Lehner flailing helplessly like a fish out of water with a dizzying bit of stickhandling, Patrick Kane punched the air and yelled, “It’s showtime!” in giddy celebration behind the Buffalo bench.

Hossa’s was the game-winner. Kane’s made it 5-1.

“I don’t even know what I was saying after that – kind of blacked out in that moment,” Kane joked. “A little bit too jacked-up for a 5-1 goal, too.”

But, hey, hockey’s fun when things are going well. And things are going well for the Blackhawks these days, with Sunday’s 5-1 rout of Kane’s hometown Buffalo Sabres their sixth win in seven games, and their second straight strong performance out of the bye week. The Hawks’ first four goals came from four different lines, Jonathan Toews continued his hot streak, Kane reached the 20goal plateau for the 10th straight season, and Scott Darling made 25 saves for the victory – the Hawks’ 11th straight over Buffalo, and the 399th of Joel Quenneville’s Chicago tenure.

Quenneville talks a lot about the Hawks being at their best when they’re rolling four lines. They’re even better when all four lines are rolling.

“I think this is what the coaches were trying to find since the beginning, trying to find four lines that can score,” said Richard Panik, who had an eventful night with two penalties, several golden scoring chances, and an assist. “And now, finally, every line is playing unreal.”

The win was especially validating after Saturday night’s dominant effort against Edmonton ended in a hard-luck loss.

The Minnesota Wild – Tuesday’s opponent in another Central Division showdown – keep piling up wins and might seem almost out of reach, but the way the Hawks see it, if they keep playing the way they’ve been playing the last few weeks, it might not matter.

“That’s kind of the identity of our team – when we’ve got four lines going, we play really well and we’re hard to stop,” Ryan Hartman said. “We’ve just got to keep that up.”

Hartman got things going with a filthy under-the-bar snipe from the right dot. It was Hartman’s 14th goal of the season, all of them at even-strength.

Only the top two picks in the draft, budding superstars Auston Matthews and Patrik Laine, have more even-strength goals among rookies than Hartman, the 30th pick in the 2013 draft. It was one of

“It’s one of my better ones,” Hartman said. “We had a good screen. I don’t think he even saw it. He just reacted to the sound of it hitting behind him.”

But after the Hawks killed off an 88-second Sabres 5-on-3 advantage, Buffalo tied it up with just 5.6 seconds left in the first period when Evander Kane knocked in a spinning backhanded centering feed from Jack Eichel.

That did little to slow the Hawks’ momentum. Hossa scored his team-leading 21st goal at 9:40 of the second to make it 2-1, and Toews stuffed in a Panik re-

bound to make it 3-1. Toews has five goals and 11 assists in his last 11 games.

The Hawks’ vaunted second line got in on the fun in the third, with Artem Anisimov completing a tic-tac-toe passing play from Artemi Panarin and Kane to make it 4-1 at 3:29, and Kane juking Lehner out of his shorts three minutes later – a well-celebrated exclamation point to another encouraging performance.

And whether the standings reflect it or not, the Hawks feel they’re on the rise.

“We’re playing our best hockey,” Quenneville said.

Butler takes backseat in contest with little competition

mpotash@suntimes.com NEW ORLEANS – Jimmy Butler will never forget his first All-Star Game experience.

“It was so surreal,” the Bulls’ swingman said. “It’s like, ‘Well, maybe I do belong here.’ That’s all I was thinking.”

But this time Butler was at a different level. Selected as a reserve in his first two All-Star Games in 2015 and last year, Butler was introduced as a starter for the East team Sunday night at the Smoothie King Center, with LeBron James and ahead of East reserve Carmelo Anthony.

“Now it’s how to get here every year,” Butler said. “That’s the fun part.

That’s the next challenge – how you continue to play at a very high level and maintain that year-in and year-out.

A lot of guys have done it for 10-plus years. Hopefully I’m one of them.”

Though honored to be a starter, Butler was a little out of his element in a rag-tag game that was not much more than a halftime entertainment show of NBA-level circus feats. Butler had six points on 3-of-4 shooting in the West’s 192-182 victory in an almost totally non-competitive game.

Chicago native Anthony Davis of the hometown New Orleans Pelicans was the game’s MVP, scoring 52 points on 26-of-39 shooting to lead the West.

With the teams scoring at a cartoonish rate, Butler often was still on one end of the floor when a basket was scored at the other. He joined the scoring fun when took a pass on the baseline and drove for an uncontested dunk.

Almost everything was uncontested in this game.

The players had their fun with it. At one point, 6-11 DeAndre Jordan came out of a timeout seriously guarding 5-9 Isaiah Thomas. He quickly switched off.

There was one notable bit of intrigue in the early going when brothers-turned-embittered-rivals Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook both were on the floor for the West after Westbook entered the game with 6:07 left in the first quarter.

And everybody noticed when Westbrook passed to Durant, who passed back to Westbrook for a dunk on a giveand-go to cut the East lead to 31-26 with 5:07 later. The West bench gave a hearty mock cheer, acknowledging the hubub over the duo’s frosty relationship since Durant bolted from the Thunder for the Warriors in the offseason.

The players tried their hardest to entertain. Westbrook tried to bounce the

ball off the glass and dunk it but failed.

LeBron James tried a bounce pass from beyond the three-point circle for an alley-oop – Durant, “guarding” James, blocked the ball after it bounced and turned it into a layup at the other end.

Thomas tried a dunk-contest slam – bouncing the ball and jumping to dunk it, but missed. He grabbed the ball, dribbled into the corner and nailed a 3-pointer.

James connected on one showtime play on a fast break when he threw the ball off the glass with his left hand and dunked it with his right hand from the other side. He slapped hands with a fan in the first row on his way to the other end of the court.

The frivolity continued in the second half when James took a jump shot from just inside the half-court line – and missed.

The Badgers (22-5, 11-3) overcame 27 points from Terrapins guard Melo Trimble to snap a two-game losing streak.

Wisconsin pulled away slowly, turning a six-point halftime deficit into a 12-point edge with 3 minutes to go.

But they did draw whistles in a physical game at the loud, rowdy Kohl Center. The game lacked flow because of frequent foul calls. The schools combined for 48 fouls, 25 for Maryland (22-5, 10-4).

Minnesota 83, Michigan 78 (OT): At Minneapolis, Jordan Murphy had 16 points and 15 rebounds and Eric Curry scored all 12 of his points in the second half to lift Minnesota to its fifth straight victory over Michigan.

Reggie Lynch added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Gophers (20-7, 8-6 Big Ten).

Derrick Walton Jr. scored 10 of his 16 points in the final five minutes of regulation and D.J. Wilson added 16 points

Elliott gets Daytona 500 pole

The Associated Press DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – It’s impossible to tell the history of NASCAR without mentioning Elliott and Earnhardt.

As the series shifts into a new era, those distinguished names are out front again and will give the start of the Daytona 500 a throwback feel.

Chase Elliott and Dale Earnhardt Jr. – teammates and sons of Hall of Fame drivers – will start 1-2 and should give a sagging series a sorely needed boost this week headed into its marquee event.

Elliott nipped Earnhardt on the final qualifying lap Sunday to win his second straight pole for the Daytona 500.

Elliott turned a lap at 192.872 mph to just edge Earnhardt’s speed of 192.864 and become the first repeat pole winner in 27 years.

“I don’t really care who it is. I’m not going to feel bad about beating somebody,” Elliott said. “Dale’s a good guy.

I’m happy to share the front row with him. Happier to beat him.”

Earnhardt, long NASCAR’s most popular driver, had the speed to beat

in his triumphant return after missing the second half of last season with a concussion. He missed the final 18 races with nausea, vision and balance issues after at least the fifth concussion of his career after a June wreck. He was as sharp as ever in the No. 88 Chevrolet headed into his first race since last July.

“Ain’t much to it. The car does all the work ,” he said.

Elliott and Earnhardt gave Hendrick Motorsports and Chevrolet a 1-2 front row for the fifth time in the Daytona 500.

Elliott, the 21-year-old son of Hall of Fame driver and two-time Daytona 500 champion Bill Elliott, became the youngest Daytona 500 pole winner a year ago and proved in the No. 24 Chevy starting first last season was no fluke.

Elliott also made it three straight years for the No. 24 on the pole. Jeff Gordon won the pole in 2015 in his final season before he retired and turned the car over to Elliott.

The rest of the field will be set Thursday in the two qualifying races.

Elliott’s speed earned team owner Rick Hendrick his 11th overall pole in the Daytona 500.

28 Patient care a priority regardless of gender Dear Doctor: Do hospitalized patients really get better care from female doctors compared to men, as a new study – and now many headlines – claim?

Dear Reader: My initial reaction when I saw this study was one of denial. As a man, I viewed the study – and the host of media articles reporting on it – with something like hostility; it seemed no less than an attack on my gender. After I calmed down a bit, I read through the research.

The study, published recently in JAMA Internal Medicine, looked at a random sample of data – totaling more than 1.5 million hospitalizations – from four years of hospitalizations among Medicare patients being cared for by general internists. The authors separated the patients into two groups based on the gender of their physicians, then evaluated quality of care by the death rates of these patients within a 30-day period after hospitalization and also by the rates of readmission to the hospital after being discharged.

The authors found the death rates of patients cared for by female internists were slightly lower than the death rates of patients cared for by male internists: 11.07 percent versus 11.49 percent. This was not a staggering difference – amounting to one fewer death in 233 patients – but still, it was a difference.

Further, readmission rates were lower for patients of female doctors compared to patients of male doctors: 15.02 percent versus 15.57. This means one fewer readmission in 182 patients.

Even as a man playing devil’s advocate, I can’t blame confounding factors – differences in patient characteristics – for the findings. Female doctors took care of more female patients, slightly fewer patients with heart disease, lung disease and diabetes, but slightly more patients with kidney disease.

But these were only minimal differences, and the authors took those differences into account, making adjustments for them in

Yet there were two differences between the female and male doctors that may be of substance: the physicians themselves. Female physicians in the study were on average 5 years younger than their male counterparts (42.8 years versus 47.8 years). Not to be ageist, but younger doctors may have a greater ability to use hospital computer systems, may be more likely to utilize social services for their patients, and may be more willing to alter their practices based on the latest studies.

Another important aspect is female physicians on average took care of fewer hospitalized patients than their male counterparts, with female internists taking care of an estimated 132 hospitalized patients a year versus male internists’ 181. The busier schedule of the male internists may increase the chances that some aspects of care will be negatively affected. The authors tried to correct for both the age and patient load issues, but that’s not easy to do.

As provocative as this new study is, it’s far from conclusive. A 2013 study in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine found no differences in care between male and female physicians in the rates of death, hospitalizations or health care expenditures.

In summation, this research does nonetheless offer a reminder to all physicians, regardless of gender or age, that many factors affect patient death rates and readmissions – and we can’t afford to let any of them fall through the cracks.

But it may be she wants more free baby-sitting service. You say you have her children almost every weekend. That hardly seems to me like she’s keeping them from you. Remind her working a full-time job and taking care of her children the amount of time you already do is as much as you can handle, and you need time with your daughter and her son. There are only so many hours in a day, and you need time to rest if you’re going to go the distance. If that’s not enough for her, so be it. If she chooses to punish you for it, it is her children who will also suffer – not just you.
