browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – DeKalb School District 428 interim Superintendent Bradley Hawk wants the board to remove DeKalb High School Principal Michele Albano and the district’s human resource director after a tumultuous year that included allegations of sexual harassment.

Hawk is recommending the board not renew its contracts with Albano and Human Resources Director Jim Bormann. Earlier this month, the board approved separation agreement with former Superintendent Doug Moeller. The board is set to meet at 7 p.m.

Tuesday at the Education Center, 901 S. 4th St., DeKalb.

Moeller had been on administrative leave since September when Albano sought a restraining order against him. In the restraining order filed in Kane County, Albano alleged that Moeller had become upset with her after she spurned his advances, threatened to ruin her career and intimidated her with a gun.

In a formal complaint Albano filed with the district Sept. 16, she portrayed Moeller as a boss who was out to get her after she tried to cool off their personal relationship. However, she also said her relationship with Moeller had gotten her hired.

District records show that staff and community members spent about six hours interviewing as many as six candidates for the principal job April 8, but in her grievance, Albano wrote that before she applied for the

job, “Dr. Moeller had promised that if I wanted the position, it was mine.”

On April 20, the board hired Albano, and Albano said she rekindled a friendship with Moeller that began when they both worked at Elgin High School from 2007 to ’09. The two began meeting in person and exchanging text messages, and by the summer, they had developed “a personal interest” in each other, but agreed a “real relationship” would be inappropriate, Albano wrote.

“Our texts and conversation evolved for about the next month and a half into sexual innuendo, jokes, friendly banter; but there began what I would later see as a pattern of odd behavior,” Albano wrote. “Any situation that he witnessed my getting close, either physically or in a personal/professional relationship, with another male, he would find a way to strike out at me.”

Albano let the restraining order against Moeller lapse when she failed to show up to court in early October.

She has declined to comment on the situation in the past. Reached Friday evening, she again declined to comment on the proposed action regarding her contract.

Hawk also recommended the board not renew a contract with Bormann. No reason is given for the action other than Hawk’s recommendation. Bormann’s contract was the source of some confusion last year, and he had been on leave.

The District 428 board is set to vote on both recommendations at Tuesday’s meeting.

BOSTON – In a Mexican cave system so beautiful and hot that it is called both Fairyland and hell, scientists have discovered life trapped in crystals that could be 50,000 years old.

The bizarre and ancient microbes were found dormant in caves in Naica, Mexico, and were able to exist by living on minerals such as iron and manganese, said Penelope Boston, head of NASA’s Astrobiology Institute.

“It’s super life,” said Boston, who presented the discovery Friday at the American Association for the Advancement of Science conference in Boston.

If confirmed, the find is yet another example of how microbes can survive in extremely punishing conditions on Earth.

Though it was presented at a science conference and was the result of nine years of work, the findings haven’t yet been published in a scientific journal and haven’t been peer reviewed. Boston planned more genetic tests for the microbes she revived both in the lab and on site.

The life forms – 40 different strains of microbes and even some viruses – are so weird that their nearest relatives are still 10 percent different genetically.

Increased caseloads, fewer course offerings expected with Sycamore layoffs

SYCAMORE – With Sycamore School District 427 considering a third consecutive year of staff cuts, parents such as Natalie Nelson are concerned about how services for their children might be affected, as caseloads are expected to increase for counselors, special education teachers and others.

Nelson said her son, a fourth-grader who has autism and ADHD, receives help from a special education teacher, teacher’s aide and social worker; all are positions identified for reductions.

“I was really disappointed that most of the cuts are in places where we can’t afford them,” she said.

The board members heard a proposed staff reduction plan Tuesday in which about 40 positions are up for elimination. Members stressed the importance of reaching a balanced budget to reduce deficit spending, which would require a $2.3 million cut next year.

The goal is to reach a balanced budget by the end of the 2017-18 school year, which is slated to be the final peg of the district’s three-year budget reduction plan.

Superintendent Kathy Countryman said of about 19 teaching positions identified, eight teachers would lose their jobs, and the rest would be achieved through attrition. She also said 20 full- and part-time support staff would be affected of 21 positions identified.

Countryman said the district anticipates being able to bring several staff members back using grants, but it must take precautions to not be overstaffed if the grants are not fully funded.

“These are people that we’ve hired; we know them, and we know the great work they do,” she said. “To have to make these kinds of decisions is really brutal, frankly.”

Last year, the district dismissed 18 employees, including 12 full-time teachers. That was after laying off four full-time employees and three part-time employees and reducing four positions in 2015. The past two years’ cuts have led to increased class sizes in the high school and targeting student services to those with specific needs for them, Countryman said.

The plan for next year would reduce five core curriculum teachers, four reading teachers, three special education teachers, 3.2 library, physical education, technology or art teachers, and 1.6 elective course teachers. It also would eliminate parttime social worker and school counselor positions and a school nurse.

From the support staff, 10 teacher’s aide positions would be eliminated, along with two math interventionists, six reading interventionists, an office secretary, a security guard and a technology assistant.

Lynn Reilley, the district’s special education director, said two of the cuts to special education are specialized positions for vision- and hearing-impaired students, but those services can be provided by contracting with an outside agency.

“We looked at being able to still meet all the needs of our special education students with three less staff,” Reilley said.

Countryman said the district would be looking to place reading staff, social workers, nurses and others where they are most needed, as it does with special education staff.

“We would say your assignment is going to be partially here, but maybe in this building we have more students that need support, so we would have two people there,” she said.

The district also would be looking to adjust schedules for library, art and gym classes so they still are available with the staffing decrease, as well as offering fewer of the less popular elective courses at the high school, Countryman said.

The board will consider the staff reductions at its Feb. 28 meeting. If approved, teachers would be notified March 14, and the educational support staff notified April 11. Staff members who fall into a category for elimination are selected based on seniority, with the most recent hires the first to go, Countryman said.

Jim Dombek, chairman of the board, said as a town gets more prosperous with new construction, industry and property values, the state continues reducing funds to the school district.

“We never get a chance to fully realize the growth and the prosperity of the community, because what the state giveth, the state taketh away.

It’s always a catch-22,” he said. “It really is a difficult situation, especially after we’ve made all the cuts we can to infrastructure, now to have to look at programs and people.”

Board member Eric Jones said the board has been taking measures to reduce spending for years in the hopes that the economy would improve, but with more than 80 percent of the district budget going to pay staff, some reductions are unavoidable.

“There’s nothing there left to cut,” Jones said. “You can’t just shut off a light in every classroom and somehow save a couple of teaching positions that way.”

Board member Kris Wrenn said now that the deficit spending previous boards have saved is no longer available, the district cannot afford to pay its bills without considering serious ways to reduce the budget.

“I’ve been on the board for seven years, and the entire time we’ve been in a three-year deficit reduction plan,” she said.

This school year, the district cut $2.8 million in spending after a $1.1 million reduction in the 2015-16 school year.

Officials mum DeKalb could gain Sonic this summer on details of settlement with RTA

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com GENOA – The city of Genoa has reached a settlement agreement with the Chicago-based Regional Transportation Authority of a lawsuit that alleged PetroLiance, an oil and fuel distributor, set up an office in the city to dodge sales tax contributions toward RTA. Genoa Mayor Mark Vicary said a settlement was being finalized, but he declined to comment on the terms, including any money the city might have to pay the transit agency, until he signed the appropriate paperwork for the agreement.

The city entered into an agreement in 2005 with PetroLiance, which was then Boncosky Oil Co., to open a sales office at 114 N. Washington St. in Genoa. The city, in return, agreed to rebate 50 percent of sales tax revenues the company generated.

However, RTA’s lawsuit claimed that PetroLiance sales were actually done in Elgin, which is within the agency’s taxing area. It claimed PetroLiance was using the Genoa office as a “sham” office to get out of paying taxes.

At the time the suit was filed in 2014, a RTA spokesman could not pin a figure on the amount of sales tax revenue that the agency lost because of the arrangement. In the lawsuit, the agency sought to recover the lost tax revenue plus an additional 50 percent and litigation costs.

A similar lawsuit against the city of Sycamore was filed by RTA about the same time as the Genoa suit and alleged that a sham office was used by American Airlines and American Aviation Supply within the Sycamore Municipal Building, which is outside of RTA’s taxing jurisdiction, to get out of paying operation taxes. Sycamore also has a similar arrangement with United Airlines.

Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy said Friday the matter still is being handled

by Cook County courts but over the past year, a decision has been looking more favorable toward the city.

Other cities also have been targeted

by RTA over alleged sham offices.

RTA officials and PetroLiance couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Friday.

DeKALB – A Sonic Drive-In restaurant could open in DeKalb this summer after the City Council approved a measure to clear the way this week.

The council approved an amendment to a special-use permit for the site at 1115 W. Lincoln Highway during its Monday meeting.

The restaurant would open in the 3,480-square-foot building that was formerly the site of a Long John Silver’s and KFC restaurants.

The petition was filed by Peoria-based Weaver Enterprises. Interim principal planner Dan Olson said that the applicant would be adding signs and minor landscaping but would not be significantly altering the site.

Sonic spokesman Seth Wolken said the plan is to have the restaurant open by July or August.

The tentative plan is to have four drive-thru stalls and 31 on-site parking spaces. Wolken said he was not sure what the project would cost.

Born: November 18, 1945; in DeKalb, IL Died: February 12, 2017; in Oshkosh, WI

William J. “Bill” Powers, age 71, of Oshkosh, WI, formerly of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at Azura Memory Care, Oshkosh, WI. Bill was born on November 18, 1945 in DeKalb, IL, a son to William and Elizabeth (Yagen) Powers. On February 25, 1978, he married Rosalyn E. “Rose” Koertge in Mulberry Grove, IL and she preceded him in death on January 13, 2014. Bill was a member of the Illinois State Police and retired as a Captain. He was a member of and Committee Chair leading fundraising for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, a master gardener and focused on native prairie plants and their reintroduction along with gardening with his wife at their home. He was also a Hunter Safety Course instructor teaching many kids classes, a member of the Airedale Rescue Society traveling the Midwest transporting dogs to safe homes, enjoyed fly-in fishing trips to Canada with his friends from Pinckneyville, loved the float airplanes and the company of his good friends. He also enjoyed the fishing trips he took to Ely, MN, with his brothers and nephews, and collecting duck decoys. Bill was also an elk hunter and enjoyed elk hunting with his Uncle Ted in Wyoming Big Horn mountains.

Survivors include two brothers, Robert Powers of Maple Park, IL, and John (Kim) Powers of Central City, IA; a sister, Mary (Jim) Delikat of Oshkosh, WI; three nephews, Tom (Emily) Delikat, Ben Powers, Connor Powers; a niece, Kathy Delikat; and his mother-in-law,

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Rose.

Memorial services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Pinckneyville, IL on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. with Reverend Jim Barnett officiating. Friends may call at the First United Methodist Church, Pinckneyville, IL on Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Private Graveside service will be held at a later date.

Born July 9, 1925 in Belvidere IL, daughter of Harold and Emma “Minnie” Gustafson. Dorothy would marry the love of her life, Kenneth B. Rehn on February 16, 1946 in Belvidere, IL. She would go on to live her life as a home maker where she lovingly took care of her three children. Dorothy through her life was passionate about her time as a foster mother, 4H leader and baking cookies and cakes with her grandchildren. She was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church where she made her spiritual home. Most importantly Dorothy loved God and her family.

Dorothy is loved and will be missed by her children, Dennis (Deborah) Rehn, Jon (Crystal) Rehn, Patricia (Paul) Rehn-Forrest; grandchildren, Andrew Rehn, Katie Rehn, Sarah Rehn, Molly (Nick) Kisling, Megan McDonald, Alyssa Rehn, Stephen Forrest; and great-grandchild, James Forrest; brother, Donald (Nancy) Gustafson; and sister-in-law, Eunice Corson.

The people in the car didn’t cooperate with investigators, but police learned the visitors believed they were targeted because of their gang affiliation.

Redel said the visitors were near Road Ranger, 125 N. Annie Glidden Road, when another call pulled up

and started shooting. No one was injured.

The incident remains under investigation.

DeKALB – Area job seekers will have two simultaneous opportunities to present themselves to local employers.

Kishwaukee College and the Illinois workNet Center in DeKalb are partnering to host a community job fair Wednesday at the Community Outreach Building at 2500 N. Annie Glidden Road.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include representatives from Hy-Vee, Maurices, Illinois Community Credit Union, DeKalb Park District, Silgan Manufacturing, Furst Staffing and other employers.

DeKALB – The public is invited to a free Severe Weather Spotter course at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the DeKalb Police Department on 700 W. Lincoln Highway.

The roughly two-hour course is presented by the National Weather Service. Their instructors work in conjunction with Gilbert Sebenste of the Northern Illinois University Weather Services.

In order to obtain critical weather information, the weather service implemented SKYWARN, a program with 350,000 to 400,000 trained volunteers who help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service.

“Despite massive weather technology improvements over the last 30 years, radar and other weather diagnostic tools cannot tell you if a tornado is present, exactly how strong the winds are in thunderstorms or how large hail is falling,” police Cmdr. Jason Leverton said.

The course will teach things such as the weather conditions that warn of severe weather, various cloud types that can fool you into thinking a tornado is present, how you can measure rainfall and how to report in real time to the National Weather Service.

There is limited space for the event, so it is recommended that people RSVP with the names of attendees to Leverton at jleveton@cityofdekalb.com.

Former congressman Michel dies at 93

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Bob Michel, an affable Illinois congressman who served as leader of the Republican House minority for 14 years and was skilled at seeking compromise critical in getting many initiatives of two Republican presidents through Congress, died Friday. He was 93.

A former staffer, Mike Johnson, said Michel passed away Friday morning.

Michel’s skill at seeking compromise with the Democrats was critical in helping Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush pursue their agendas during their presidential terms.

Michel served 19 terms in the GOP minority and retired one election too soon to be part of the GOP House majority that swept into power in 1994. He stood on the sidelines as an ebullient Newt Gingrich of Georgia took the role of House speaker. Gingrich praised Michel that day, but had considered him too pliable and conciliatory with the Democrats while he was Republican leader.

But year after year, Michel had been faced with cutting deals with the Democratic majority. He admitted at a GOP fundraiser in 1994 that it was

CHICAGO – An Amtrak police officer charged in the shooting death of an unarmed Minneapolis man outside Chicago’s Union Station was ordered held on $250,000 bail Friday.

LaRoyce Tankson, 31, is charged with first-degree murder in the Feb. 8 shooting of 25-year-old Chad Robertson, who died Wednesday, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office said.

Robertson was taking a bus from Memphis, Tennessee, to Minneapolis and was on a stopover in Chicago when the shooting occurred. Robertson and two friends went to Union Station to stay warm while they waited for their onward bus. But two officers confronted

Francisco Espinal-Quiroz pleaded guilty in November to five counts of reckless homicide and falsifying entries in his logbook, which tracked how many hours he was behind the wheel. He was sentenced Thursday during hearing attended by relatives of the victims.

Espinal-Quiroz told the families: “I’m so sorry.”

Espinal-Quiroz, 53, was driving along Interstate 55 near Channahon when his vehicle slammed into vehicles stopped at a construction zone on July 21, 2014.

The crash killed five people in three vehicles.

Michel had announced in late 1993 that he would not seek another term, citing lost power under a Democratic administration and a new class of lawmakers making their careers by “trashing the institution.” In an interview after the 1994 election, Michel criticized the GOP’s “Contract With America,” saying its tax-cutting and defense spending provisions could actually worsen the budget deficit.

Throughout his service, Michel was seen as a gentleman who considered many Democrats and Republicans among his friends.

“He had many opponents, but no enemies,” former President Richard Nixon said in taped remarks to a crowd of Republicans paying tribute near the end of Michel’s time in Congress. And that was a big factor in his leadership style.

“Ideological activists believe they know the truth and they don’t want to negotiate or compromise or even talk about compromise,” he once said. “But in the House the ability to strike a wise compromise is an essential part of leadership.”

Navistar to make armored trucks for Pakistan

WEST POINT, Miss. – Navistar International Corp. has been awarded a $35 million contract to deliver 40 armored vehicles to Pakistan from its Mississippi plant.

The U.S. Army announced the contract Thursday, saying Navistar, based in Lisle, had made the only bid for the mine resistant ambush protected MaxxPro Dash DXM trucks.

Work is supposed to be done at Navistar’s plant in West Point, as well as in Pakistan, and is estimated to be finished

Trump leaps back into campaign mode

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – Hoping to shift attention from his troubled White House, President Donald Trump hit the road Friday to deliver a pep talk to American workers and the rest of the nation, resurrecting the jobs promises that powered his election victory and pledging in a campaign-style rally to “unleash the power of the American spirit.”

But he was only a few hours away from the turmoil he has stirred in Washington when he swerved from that positive message to escalate his complaints about news coverage of his young administration.

“The FAKENEWS media ... is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!” he exclaimed on Twitter, singling out The New York Times and TV networks. His latest outburst came a day after he forcefully defended his administration in a marathon White House news conference, brushing aside the tumult, infighting among senior staff and setbacks in courts and Congress.

He took a more upbeat tack in South Carolina.

“We love our workers and we are going to protect our workers,” Trump declared at a Boeing plant where the company showed off its new 78710 Dreamliner aircraft. “We are going to fight for jobs. We are going to fight for our families,” he said in a reprise of the “America First” message from his campaign.

Trump is expected to stick to the theme Saturday when he holds a big rally in central Florida, a change of scenery that marks an effort to galvanize a month-old White House that has been buffeted by crisis and paralyzed by dysfunction.

In Washington on Thursday, he complained bitterly

about news coverage – and “criminal” leaks from within the government that took down his top national security adviser and revived questions about his own ties to Russia.

Trump still is trying to stabilize his national security team. On Monday, he demanded the resignation of national security adviser Michael Flynn after revelations that Flynn had misled Vice President Mike Pence about Flynn’s contacts with Russia. Trump’s first choice to replace Flynn – retired Vice Admiral Robert Harward – turned down the offer.

FBI Director Jim Comey left a meeting with senators on the intelligence committee Friday afternoon. Neither Comey nor the senators would discuss the subject of the meeting, but it followed reports that the FBI had interviewed Flynn about his contacts in December with Russian officials.

Trump tweeted Friday that retired Gen. Keith Kellogg, “who I have known for a long time, is very much in play for NSA – as are three others.”

Kellogg, who is serving as the acting national security adviser, traveled to South Carolina with Trump aboard Air Force One.

Report: IS ‘business model’ near collapse

The Associated Press The Islamic State group is hemorrhaging money with every piece of territory it loses, according to a new analysis that found that the group’s “business model” is on the path to failure.

The analysis released Saturday by the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence and the accounting firm EY found that the self-proclaimed caliphate’s financial resources have been drained substantially since the days beginning in mid-2014 when it captured banks, oil wells and entire warehouses of weapons as it amassed land.

The report found that Islamic State revenue has declined from up to $1.9 billion in 2014 to at most $870 million in 2016.

“One of the mistakes that’s been made in the past when we were talking about Islamic State was talking about it purely as a terrorist organization.

It is a terrorist organization but it is more than that. It holds territory,” said Peter Neumann, director of the center at King’s College London. “That also means it has a lot more expenses.

It needs to fix roads. It needs to pay teachers. It needs to run health services. It needs to pay for these things that al-Qaida never had to.”

But less money may not make the group less dangerous, the report said.

“We know from the attacks in Paris and Brussels and Berlin that none of them was expensive,” Neumann said.

Most of the recent attacks in Europe and the U.S. were self-financed by the people who carried them out, with little input or money from the IS leadership in the war zone of Syria and Iraq.

Among the top sources of revenue for the Islamic State group were taxes and fees, oil, ransoms, and looting or other extortion. All of those, Neumann said, required newly captured territory to be sustainable and to keep the group’s promise of a caliphate.

The White House distanced itself Friday from a Department of Homeland Security draft proposal to use the National Guard to round up unauthorized immigrants, but lawmakers said the document offers insight into the Trump administration’s internal efforts to enact its promised crackdown on illegal immigration.

Administration officials said the proposal, which called for mobilizing up to 100,000 troops in 11 states, was rejected, and would not be part of plans to carry out President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration policy.

If implemented, the National Guard idea, contained in an 11-page memo obtained by The Associated Press, could have led to enforcement action against millions of immigrants living nowhere near the Mexican border. Four states that border on Mexico were included in the proposal – California, Arizona,

New Mexico and Texas – but it also encompassed seven states contiguous to those four – Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Despite the AP’s public release of the document, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said there was “no effort at all to utilize the National Guard to round up unauthorized immigrants.”

A DHS official described the document as a very early draft that was not seriously considered and never brought to Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly for approval.

However, DHS staffers said Thursday that they had been told by colleagues in two DHS departments that the proposal still was being considered as recently as Feb. 10. DHS spokeswoman Gillian Christensen declined to say who wrote the memo, how long it had been under consideration or when it had been rejected.

The pushback from administration officials did little to quell outrage over the draft plan. Three Republican governors spoke out against the proposal and numerous Democratic lawmakers denounced it as an overly aggressive approach to immigration enforcement.

Death penalty failures abound

The failures of Colorado’s capital punishment system are almost too lengthy to list, and yet prosecutors continue to sporadically and unsuccessfully ask jurors to sentence convicted criminals to death.

We urge Colorado lawmakers to repeal the death penalty by approving Senate Minority Leader Lucia Guzman’s Senate Bill 95, which would replace capital punishment with a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. SB 95 would save the state millions in both the prosecution and defense of murderers and an untold number of judicial man hours that have so infrequently resulted in death. The track record of death sentences in Colorado is bleak.

Let’s start in 1997, the last time someone was executed in Colorado. Gary Davis, who raped, tortured and murdered Virginia “Ginny” May, sat on death row for a decade filled with execution dates and stays. A month before he was put to death by injection, Davis went on TV to apologize for killing May. In response, Rod MacLennan, the victim’s father, stated: “The state has spoken, everything is in place now. Why continue to bring it up?”

Davis was a constant media spectacle for 10 years while he awaited death.

Murderer Frank Rodriguez came close to being killed in 1996, but 42 hours and 39 minutes before his execution, a judge granted a stay. Instead Rodriguez died in 2002 of hepatitis C complications, 18 years after his crime.

Between 2001 and 2005, another five death row inmates had their sentences changed to life in prison for a variety of problems with legal processes.

And now we come to Colorado’s three remaining death row inmates.

Gov. John Hickenlooper spared the life of Nathan Dunlap with a temporary reprieve in 2013.

Dunlap, convicted of killing four people at an Aurora Chuck E. Cheese’s in 1993, still sits on death row awaiting a final decision on his life although all of his appeals have expired.

The beginning appeals of the two other death row inmates have been stalled in court for years, despite a 1997 change in law intended to expedite the process. The appeals process has been so mired in uncertainty with judicial changes and motions that it will stretch on for years.

And finally, two Colorado juries have recently demonstrated an unwillingness to sentence anyone to death, sparing the life of James Holmes in August 2015 after convicting him of killing 12 people at the Century Aurora 16 theater, and a few weeks later Dexter Lewis, who stabbed five people to death in a Denver bar.

Guzman said these cases all demonstrate a system that is broken beyond repair and needs to be repealed. We agree.

Trump can back word by releasing taxes

In a 28-day tenure already marred by many blunders – both by his staff and by himself – President Trump’s rambling news conference Thursday, riddled with misstatements of fact and attacks on reporters, stands out mainly for its consistency with what came before.

It was seemingly meant to counteract growing concerns, including among Republicans on Capitol Hill, that the ouster of a national security adviser for lying to the vice president was indicative of administration competence generally, or of a sinister association with the regime of Vladimir Putin. If so, Trump’s stream-of-consciousness performance – “I’m not ranting and raving,” he said at one point may not have done the trick.

At several key moments, Trump dismissed questions about any connections he and his circle may have had with Russia. “The whole Russian thing, that’s a ruse,” he declared. News reports suggesting that some of his associates had contact with Russian officials during the election were “fake,” he insisted – even as he condemned the leakers who released classified information to the media.

The bottom line, according to the

president, is this: “I own nothing in Russia. I have no loans in Russia. I don’t have any deals in Russia.”

This would be good news, and it may well be true. If only the public could trust it.

Trump ran as the least transparent major-party candidate in modern U.S. history, and he has done little since his victory in November to change that. Bucking decades of practice, he refused to release his tax returns, after promising he would do so.

His excuses did not wash.

Though his recent returns may be under audit, nothing is stopping him from releasing the documents he swore were true when he sent them to the Internal Revenue Service.

There is certainly nothing preventing him from releasing returns from earlier years. If Trump wants Americans to take his assurances about his international business arrangements seriously, releasing his tax information is the starting point.

It may be that, as Trump has indicated in the past, his tax returns would not shed as much light on his business entanglements as some have suggested. In fact, that is an argument for even more

transparency, not less. Trump was a unique presidential candidate in the potential scale and scope of his international conflicts of interest.

That demanded an unusual level of disclosure – thorough and complete accounts of how he conducted his business affairs, which he claimed as his central qualification for the presidency, and his positions heading into the White House.

Though Trump announced some worthwhile steps to separate himself from his business empire, they are significantly less valuable if the public does not know what his exposure was before he signed away operations to his sons. We should know what sorts of assets he has in what places, to whom he owes money and at which governments’ pleasure his businesses operate.

Throughout Trump’s sprawling news conference, as he spoke about Russia, the “mess” the country is in, media “dishonesty,” Democrats’ errors and a variety of other issues, this point rang true: It would be a lot easier to give the president the benefit of the doubt if he backed his words with evidence.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

I hope President Donald Trump’s attempts to end bad programs have more success. But I won’t count on it.

President Ronald Reagan promised to abolish both the Education and Energy departments. But his Congress increased funding for Education.

Farm subsidies were supposed to be a temporary Depression-era “fix.” They would protect America against food shortages. Now America has food surpluses; our citizens are fat; and farmers are richer than most Americans. Did farm subsidies diminish? No. They rose from $3 billion to $23.3 billion.

U.S. sugar quotas raise the price of everything that’s sweet. Our crazy rules are why Coke is made with corn syrup in America but sugar in most of the world. This enriches Florida’s Fanjul family, which protects its handout by donating to both Republicans and Democrats.

Peanut subsidies will soon approach the total value of the whole U.S. peanut crop itself. Insane. Yet the subsidies continue.

After World War II, American sheep and goat farmers convinced politicians that mohair deserved special protection because it was used in soldiers’ uniforms. Today, uniforms are made of synthetics, but mohair subsidies haven’t stopped. My former colleague Sam Donaldson even got some because his family raised sheep. When I confronted him, Sam agreed that the payments are “a horrible mess” but said he’d keep the money since “the law is on the books.”

He could have made the same point about another bad federal program, government flood insurance. That’s one that paid ... me. Sorry. I won’t do it again.

In 1995, the Clinton administration did manage to get rid of the mohair subsidy. But five years later, Congress brought it back.

Why? Recipients of corporate welfare are motivated lobbyists. They have lots of money at stake. You, by contrast, pay a little more in taxes or

a few pennies more for soda. Will you bother your congressman about that?

Probably not.

Congressman Jason Chaffetz is still trying to kill the mohair subsidy. I wish him luck. At one point, he got help from, of all people, Congressman Anthony Weiner. Weiner brought a goat to Capitol Hill to draw attention to the dumb handout. It may have been the only sensible thing Weiner ever did.

But even the goat didn’t work.

Congress rejected Chaffetz’s bill. And the goat stabbed Weiner’s hand with his horn.

One ray of hope: In the 1970s, the Ford and Carter administrations eliminated the Interstate Commerce Commission, the Civil Aeronautics Board and the jobs of bureaucrats who regulated gas prices. Leftists and people in industry screamed, but the reformers prevailed.

That saved Americans billions of dollars.

It can be done.

To the Editor: My name is Arthur (Larry) Lundgren. I have lived 70-plus years in DeKalb and raised and sent my children to DeKalb schools. My wife, Glenda, taught in the DeKalb schools for 25 years.

I owned a plumbing and heating business and worked for Northern Illinois University for more than 40 years. I have seen many candidates for local offices; some good, others well-intentioned, but unable to be successful.

The reason for this letter is that I cannot remember when the mayoral election was more important. We, together, must elect a person who is a leader, communicator and unifier.

We need a representative for everyone: men and women who work in and around our community, small businesses, seniors, and students. Being a diverse community, everyone should have a spokesperson who is interested in them; and they will have such a person in Jerry Smith as our next mayor.

I have known Jerry for more than 30 years. He and his wife, Ging, raised their son, Eric, in DeKalb. Jerry has always been involved the community. He listened to

us when he was the editor of the DeKalb County Journal newspaper. As executive director of the DeKalb Community Foundation, he raised needed funds for seniors, local schools, students and the entire community.

Jerry’s leadership has been recognized by the many awards he has received in the past 40 years he has served our community. We need Jerry now to lead and represent us in every neighborhood in DeKalb.

Repeal! No, Wait!

Republicans promised to repeal the Affordable Care Act. But now they are hesitating.

I understand why.

Most Americans opposed Obamacare ever since the Democrats imposed it. But now that Congress actually might kill it, more (about half those polled) said, “Wait, I like Obamacare!”

Once people get a subsidy, they’ll fight to keep it – fight hard.

People fight even to keep subsidies and guarantees that are obviously destructive. French job “protections,” such as a 35-hour work week, have so wrecked France’s economy that its socialist president tried to lengthen the work week, as well as raise the retirement age to 62 years old.

Thousands of people protested, blocking roads to airports. The reform plan died.

Greek day care workers took to the streets when their bankrupt government tried to get them to work more than 30 hours per week.

Recently, Mexico said it would stop subsidizing people’s gasoline. Seems reasonable. But the riots were so severe

“We thought we were going to roll through floor, and all of a sudden they were bouncing like they were on a trampoline, and it wasn’t from doing stuff under,” Morreale said. “Leah and Maddie, they were way up there.”

After the floor, the coaches and Aleah Leman encouraged the team.

“Our coaches gave us pep talks, and Aleah did ’cause she’s the captain,” Hickey said. “Overall, I think we just did really good. It’s a big accomplishment for the team. We worked really hard to get to where we are today.”

The words apparently paid off, as the Barbs started their climb up the standings on their way to finishing second.

Majerus’ 3-point shooting gives Sycamore title

jseverson@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – Sycamore guard Kylie Feuerbach said teammate Kate Majerus was on fire from 3-point range Friday.

That might be an understatement.

Playing in her third regional title game, Majerus connected on four 3s in the first quarter and nailed the goahead triple in the fourth quarter of the No. 2-seed Spartans’ 55-48 victory over No. 3 St. Francis in the Class 3A Wheaton Academy Regional final.

“She can do that. She can do that at any time,” Sycamore coach Adam Wickness said of Majerus’ hot shooting. “Man, to step up on the big stage and do it, it’s just unbelievable. It gave us a lot of momentum early.”

Majerus finished with a game-high 27 points and went 6 for 8 from 3-point range, including 4 for 4 in the first quarter. With Sycamore trailing, 4342, midway through the fourth quarter, the junior hit her sixth 3-pointer of the night – this one in the right corner with 3:04 left to kick-start a 9-0 run that gave Sycamore the lead for good.

“She was on fire,” Feuerbach said.

Sycamore (20-9) has won three regional titles in four years and has won at least 20 games in four consecutive seasons. The Spartans will play No. 4 Stillman Valley in a Class 3A Kaneland Sectional semifinal at 7 p.m. Monday.

with seven points and 12 rebounds – including four offensive. St. Francis was led by junior forward Antwainette Walker, who had a team-high 14 points but shot 5 for 24 from the field.

Two nights after scoring only two points in the first quarter of its 33-18 win over Burlington Central, Sycamore grabbed a 20-18 lead after the first quarter – thanks to Majerus’ four 3s.

“My teammates kept feeding me, and their passes were perfect,” Majerus said.

“They were feeding me when I was hot.”

Sycamore led by as much as seven early in the third quarter – after a layup by Maria Wright and a 3-pointer

by Feuerbach put the Spartans ahead, 34-27 – but St. Francis (17-12) charged back and eventually took the lead twice in the fourth. St. Francis junior Shelby Winkelman scored the first five points of the fourth, including a 3-pointer that gave St. Francis a 41-40 lead with 6:33 remaining.

After a pair of free throws by Majerus gave Sycamore the lead again, St. Francis senior guard Mia Mazza had a putback to give them a 43-42 advantage with 4:01 remaining.

Then Majerus drilled her go-ahead 3-pointer.

“At halftime, my coach and some of my teammates were telling me, ‘Kate, they’re going to be up on you; they’re going to be denying you,’ ” Majerus said. “I know they were shading a little bit to my side, but I didn’t let that bother me. I just waited for my teammates to drive to my side, draw the defender and then kick it out to me. It was perfect.”

Sycamore held off St. Francis by going 10 for 15 from the foul line in the final quarter.

By the numbers: Sycamore senior Taryn Mathey had four points and two rebounds, Wright had six rebounds to go with her two points, and senior Emma Stice grabbed eight rebounds and had two points.

Beyond the stats: St. Francis is the reason Sycamore hasn’t won four consecutive regional titles. Last season, St. Francis knocked off No. 1 seed Sycamore, 48-41, in the regional championship.

They said it: “We have a saying that is, ‘Picture coach is telling you on the next play you’re going to get a brandnew pair of Jordans if you get a stop,’ ” Majerus said. “You just want that stop so bad. We kept thinking about Jordans, and that’s what we did.”

The first time in the semifinals was a charm for DeKalb freshman Fabian Lopez.

Lopez knocked off Marist’s Jacob Dado, 9-4, in the semifinals of the 120-pound bracket at the Class 3A state tournament Friday in Champaign to earn a spot in the championship match Saturday.

“As a freshman, it’s really cool to be just one of two freshmen in the finals in Class 3A,” Lopez said. “It’s hard to even get down to state, so getting into the finals is really cool. Plus, to be the first freshman finalist DeKalb has ever had, it’s just an amazing feeling.”

Crown Kaneland’s 1st in 5 years

sports@daily-chronicle.com AURORA – Extended stretches of Friday’s Class 3A IMSA Regional girls basketball final featured Kaneland and Rosary trading turnovers or misfires from close range.

Whenever offense surfaced, it typically was Kaneland seizing the scoring touch, and that timeliness paved the way to a 51-33 win and the Knights’ first regional title since 2012.

“We haven’t won in so long, so I love it,” Kaneland junior guard Jamie Martens said. “I’m so happy.”

The Knights (22-6) engulfed one another at midcourt after the final buzzer sounded. They will meet Rock Falls in a Kaneland Sectional semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday, looking to avenge a close nonconference loss late last month.

“We remember that game,” junior center Grace Ringel said. “We’re ready for another chance.”

tral’s resurgence followed the Knights’ 2012 run, which in turn spelled postseason doom for Kaneland.

The Rockets ousted the Knights from regionals in two of the past three seasons before migrating to a different part of the bracket this postseason.

The Knights edged visiting BC in overtime in their penultimate game of the regular season. While players relished the result, they also embraced the opportunity to reset for regionals – and beyond.

“Our kids have worked so hard for this, and we’re going to enjoy this one tonight, for sure,” Colombe said. “But then it’s back to work and getting back to what we do with defense and intensity.”

Fine by the Knights, who held Rosary (13-15) to fewer than 10 points until 7:06 remained in the third quarter.

“I feel like we’re one of the grittier girls basketball teams around,” Ringel said.

Sisson’s dunk an exclamation mark

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Darvon Sisson did not have had the biggest game, but he still made himself known on senior night for the Barbs in a 35-30 win over Kaneland on Friday.

Sisson had a dunk late, putting an exclamation point on the win. Senior guard Cole Tucker ducked under multiple defenders to get the ball down low to Sisson in the final minute to seal the win with his first basket of the game.

In the first half, the Knights (7-20 overall, 4-8 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) had the advantage despite being undersized. Spacing the floor, the Knights were able to score off a variety of screens and fastbreaks. In the second quarter, junior guard Kyle Stuart scored nine of his 12 points – all 3-pointers. Senior forward Dan Franck scored six of his 10 points in the first quarter.

The Barbs (17-10, 9-3 NI Big 12 East) took over in the third quarter, going a 10-2 run, with junior guard Michael Vilet contributing seven of

his 10 points in that quarter. Tucker was consistent throughout, scoring 12 points. Michael Mitchell had nine points and five rebounds.

DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said he believed his team kept its composure despite turnovers and miscues.

“I think our team kept their cool,” Biancalana said. “I know sometimes when things go against us, we are not as mature as we need to be. But I think our team, our seniors, did a great job with that tonight. Kaneland-DeKalb games are always very emotional, and I tip my hat to them.”

“We did a really good job of moving around and circling and finding the open person, and we really shared the ball,” said Martens, who made 9 of 14 free throws as Kaneland finished 18 of 31 from the line.

Rock Falls clipped Kaneland, 54-51, on Jan. 28 in Maple Park. Although the Knights drilled 10 3-pointers against Rock Falls – including seven from Weber – shooting woes from inside the arc ultimately added up.

So even though the Barbs fail in their quest for their first state title, Morreale said taking second – or even third, should that be where they end up – is anything but disappointing. And Aleah Leman agreed.

“We definitely had a few stumbles we haven’t seen before, and it’s kind of upsetting to see,” she said. “But at the same time, I’m really proud because we fought for every single [point]. And we still came out second, which is incredible with the amount of mistakes we had. I’m so proud of them because they fought so hard.”

By the numbers: Morreale said the Barbs’ team score was about 1.5 points lower than their previous worse (fullstrength) team score of the season.

Beyond the stats: The final floor qualifying score was a 9.375, well below Hickey and Aleah Leman’s averages on the season.

They said it: “I’m just the happiest I’ve ever been ’cause I got to come out here with a great group of girls, and I got to do a sport I love with them,” Aleah Leman said. “I’m so proud of them, and we’re going to go home and celebrate because whether we win or whether we didn’t, if you’re happy you’re successful.”

Up next: The tournament concludes Saturday, with events starting at 2 p.m.

“I couldn’t even really talk. I had the family around me. It’s just kind of the way that I was brought up, too. It’s very good to see that nothing has really changed. It’s like a surreal moment right there. It really sunk everything

in whenever the tears were coming down my face. I think that was one of the more happy moments of my life.”

Russell has impressed everyone around the Cubs with his aplomb since they acquired him in a trade with Oakland in July 2014.

Frazier not resigned to losing during rebuild

GLENDALE, Ariz. – As you might expect, White Sox players aren’t what you’d call “all in” on the rebuilding theme of this spring training.

Yes, the Sox traded Chris Sale and Adam Eaton for prospects and are expected to make more deals. But a quiet two months have passed since those trades. And this being spring training, where hope springs eternal, the group assembling for the first full squad workout Saturday isn’t giving in to defeat.

“Why not?” third baseman Todd Frazier said Friday when asked if the Sox can win. “It comes from being a baseball player. In this game, you never know what can happen. Still pick up a guy here and there, you never know.”

Of course, the Sox could unload a guy here or there, from what Frazier calls “a good core,” minus Eaton. And don’t forget Sale, a loss Frazier found upsetting.

“We need someone to step up and be our center fielder or right fielder and we’ll be all right,” Frazier said.

“I don’t like that word rebuild. I talk Todd Frazier about refueling.”

Frazier, in the last year of his contract, could be dealt for a decent return, but the market for power-hitting corner infielders isn’t warm right now.

That could change near the deadline.

Or it could change sooner with an injury to a key player on a team with designs on contending.

Frazier clubbed 40 homers and

drove in 98 runs in his first season with the Sox, but his batting average (.225) and on-base percentage (.302) were career lows for a full season. He struck out a career-high 163 times.

His areas to improve?

“Basically everything,” he said.

“It’s a new year, man. I just try and build off what I did last year. Think about the positives. The home runs, RBI, all that stuff, but I need to try and hit the ball to right field more. Get the average back up, on-base percentage, little stuff like that we need to work on together as a team.”

Call the team what you want, but Frazier won’t call it “rebuilding.”

“I’m not either,” manager Rick Renteria said. “I know we talk about it, it would be foolish for me to say to anybody that it’s not. No, it is. The question is, how do we approach our daily

routine to have these guys maximize their ability to learn and execute on a daily basis to give ourselves a chance to win today?

“There’s no player on the face of this earth that comes to the ballpark saying today, ‘It’s OK if we lose.’ When you say ‘rebuild,’ many people might equate rebuilding with accepting losing. No, no one accepts losing.”

Certainly not Frazier, who avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, $12 million deal in the offseason. He’ll be playing to win, and for a big contract in free agency next winter.

“I’ve thought about it,” he said.

“Not to the extent where it’s going to bother me the whole year. Let’s work on this year, right now. When the time comes, let’s see what happens. Chicago is a nice place to play. and I’d like to play here.”

MESA, Ariz. – Not many 22-yearolds get handed the key to their home city.

That happened this offseason in Pensacola, Florida, for Cubs shortstop Addison Russell, and the way things are going for this now 23-year-old, he might be able to call the world his own before too long.

Even at his tender age, Russell is one of the stalwarts of a world champion team. His star has been rising for the past couple of years, and it sparkled during the World Series.

Now, everywhere he goes, people notice.

“This whole fame thing is completely new to me,” he said Friday as position players officially reported for spring training. “It’s all very cool stuff.

I got to go home, and there was Addison Russell Day at Pace High School in November.

“There’s a lot to take in. There’s so much I want to tell my parents, but I just can’t seem to find the time because everything’s going.”

Russell said there was a point when it all hit him.

“I remember this past offseason going into my mom’s room and laying down on her bed,” he said. “That’s when all the memories of this past year, all the way from spring training to the middle of the season, all-star,

his exploits in front of the national media at Cleveland’s Progressive Field.

“It happens all so quick,” he said.

“It’s really hard to even grasp it. Whenever you’re in that type of situation, there’s something in the back of your mind that says, ‘Remember this. Remember this.’ Then you do.”

Russell can get used to the fame and being noticed in places such as airports around the country. He made his first all-star team last season on the way to putting up a regular-season batting line of .238/.321/.417 with 21 homers and 95 RBIs and playing stellar defense. After going 1 for 15 in the division series against the Giants, Russell was 6 for 22 with two homers against the Dodgers in the championship series. He was 6 for 27 with the grand slam and nine RBIs in the World Series.

Although the fame is new to him, Russell said he could get used to it.

“I love it,” he said. “Ever since I was a little kid, I always wanted to be on the big screen. But it was a matter of getting there. I think a good work ethic, a great work ethic, a lot of confidence and a lot of supporters, and I definitely owe a thanks to all my fans. This is all so new. I’m just looking to build off of it and create a positive motive. If I could do that and maybe touch a kid’s life here and there, that’s the ultimate goal.”

Vegan diet may cause B12 deficiency Dear Doctor: One of my resolutions for the new year was to become a vegan, and now my girlfriend is saying I’ll have to take supplements to get enough vitamin B12. Why can’t I get B12 in my diet, and what will happen if I fall short?

Dear Reader: Your girlfriend has done her homework – vitamin B12 is a nutrient that is essential to human health.

And while it occurs naturally in a wide range of animal foods, B12 is not found in any plant foods. As a vegan, you’re now going to have to rely on supplements to be sure you get enough B12.

Why is it so important?

Vitamin B12 is a bit of a workhorse.

Not only does it play a key role in the proper functioning of the brain and the nervous system, it’s crucial to the production of red blood cells in the bone marrow. As though that wasn’t enough, B12 also aids in DNA and RNA synthesis, and is involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Research shows B12 also has a hand in maintaining mood and memory.

The body does not store B12, so you need to ingest it every day. Beef liver and clams have the highest concentrations of the nutrient.

It is also present in varying quantities in red meat, eggs, poultry, shellfish, milk and milk products. Many breakfast cereals and some dairy products are fortified with B12. For vegans, there are non-dairy milks, meat substitutes and nutritional yeast products to which B12 has been added. Dietary supplements are widely available.

What happens when B12 is in short supply?

People with a B12 deficiency may feel weak and tired, the result of the vitamin’s role in producing the red blood cells that carry oxygen throughout the body. Since B12 helps maintain the protective sheath around your nerves, a lack of the vitamin can lead to strange sensations like numbness or tingling, as well as problems with balance or walking. Mood and memory may also suffer.

In extreme cases, B12 deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anemia, a blood disorder in which the red blood cells produced in the bone marrow are unusually large, malformed and immature.

And while your girlfriend is right about your need for vigilance in getting enough B12, she may do well to examine her own B12 status. Recent studies suggest that up to 40 percent of the population, vegan or not, may be flirting with B12 insufficiency. Due to physiological changes associated with aging, the elderly are at increased risk of vitamin B12 deficiency. Individuals who have undergone weight-loss surgery also must make a special effort to get enough of the nutrient.

As for you, a newly minted vegan, we recommend you seek professional advice, preferably from your family doctor, to be certain you forge a wise nutritional course.

DEAR ABBY fiancé and I are getting married Jeanne in a year. We Phillips have some very close gay friends, and I have gay family members on my mom’s side. The majority of our family is gay-friendly, but a few of them on my father’s side are very open about their dislike of the LGBT community.

Our ceremony will be at a Unitarian Universalist church because we love that they are supportive of the LGBT community and want everyone to feel comfortable and accepted on our big day. I’m terrified my family members will do or say something to hurt or offend guests at our wedding who have same-sex partners.

I am considering putting a note on my wedding website that our wedding will be a celebration of love, and to please set aside political and personal beliefs and accept every one of our guests during this happy occasion. Would this be appropriate? I don’t know how else to convey the message we will not tolerate any hateful or offensive remarks or actions against our loved ones. – Bride for Marriage Equality Dear Bride: Do not post that message on your website. Dear Abby: My darling husband recently passed away. It’s a sad time for all of us. I wrote his obituary for our local paper and included the names of charitable causes, requesting donations be sent to them in lieu of flowers. I sent the obituary to my husband’s mother and sister who live out of state, in case they wanted to publish it in their local paper in the town where he grew up. They did, but changed the charities to ones of their choice. They didn’t tell me they were doing it or ask my opinion. I found out only when I saw his obituary online.

This also went down three, minus 500, giving Lavazza 16 international match points en route to the title.
