tthorne@shawmedia.com CORTLAND – A 17-year-old Kaneland High School student was found dead Saturday in Cortland, DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller said.

Travis Meyer, of the 100 block of South Somonauk Road, Cortland, was a senior at the high school. Miller said an autopsy performed Monday showed no signs of foul play or selfharm. Toxicology results are pending, Miller said.

DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said Meyer was found at home.

Kaneland School District 302 issued a statement Sunday regarding the death.

Superintendent Todd Leden said the district’s main priority is “making sure students are supported” at this time.

The district’s crisis team – involving counselors, school psychologists and other support personnel – was to have been available for students and staff Monday.

The district will share funeral information when it becomes available, Leden said.

Man accused of exposing himself DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – A 64-year-old who detectives said repeatedly exposed himself from his DeKalb apartment window was arrested on Valentine’s Day. Lee A. Pryor, 64, of the 1400 block of Twombly Road, DeKalb, was charged Tuesday with five counts of public indecency and five counts of disorderly conduct. If convicted of a single misdemeanor, Pryor could face up to a year in jail.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office received

complaints about a man engaging in sexual acts at the window of his apartment during the week of Feb. 6, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Detectives spotted the man standing in the picture window of his apartment, naked, and exposing himself during surveillance of the area, according to the release.

The incidents started in January and continued until Pryor’s arrest at Suburban Apartments, police said.

Pryor is being held at the DeKalb County Jail until he can appear before a judge.

TODAY’S TALKER REPORT: HARRISON FORD HAS JET RUN-IN AT CALIFORNIA AIRPORT

SANTA ANA, Calif. – Actor Harrison Ford had a potentially serious run-in with an airliner at a Southern California airport, NBC-TV reported Tuesday.

Ford, 74, was told to land his single-engine plane on a runway at John Wayne Airport in Orange County on Monday, but he mistakenly landed it on a parallel taxiway, passing over an American Airlines jet holding nearby, NBC reported.

“Was that airliner meant to be underneath me?” Ford is heard asking air traffic controllers in a recording, NBC reported.

American Airlines Flight 1456, with 110 passengers and six crew, departed safely for Dallas a few minutes later.

Ford’s publicist, Ina Treciokas, declined to comment Tuesday afternoon.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor couldn’t confirm that Ford was piloting the Aviat Husky that overflew the Boeing 737, but he said the pilot received and had read back the proper landing instructions.

The FAA is investigating, Gregor said.

Ford collects vintage planes and has a long and good record as an aviator. But he has had several close calls.

Solemn ceremony marks anniversary of Cole Hall attack

DeKALB – When Mary Kay Mace saw how tall the trees had grown around the Forward, Together Forward memorial statue on campus at Northern Illinois University, it reminded her that “time just keeps on moving.”

Mace’s daughter, Ryanne Mace, was one of the five NIU students who were killed nine years ago during the Feb. 14, 2008, shooting in Cole Hall.

“It’s strange to reflect on how next year is going to be the 10-year anniversary,” Mace said. “We’re going to be in the double digits; 10 years is more than half my daughter’s life.”

Ryanne Mace, 19; Gayle Dubowski, 20; Catalina Garcia, 20; Julianna Gehant, 32; and Daniel Parmenter, 20, were killed in the shooting, which occurred near the end of an oceanography class. Nineteen others were wounded.

The victims’ family members, students, faculty, President Doug Baker and others gathered Tuesday outside of Cole Hall and listened for a bell to toll five times at 3:06 p.m. in honor of the students who lost their lives.

After leaving flowers and tokens of remembrance in front of the memorial stones, many stood and put their arms around each other during a moment of silent reflection.

Mace said she and her husband haven’t been able to make the anniversary for the past three years because of the snow, but she was glad Tuesday was a nice day so they could come and connect with the other families.

“It’s soothing,” she said. “It’s kind of a balm for our pain to see that other people remember.”

Mace said that although the anniversary brings up a lot of emotions, it also makes her happy to be able to talk openly about the memory of her daughter, who was studying to become a counselor and was the kind of person who would befriend people within five minutes of meeting them.

“This day nine years ago was horrifying,” she said. “It was horrific and terrible and just shattered me, but now the anniversaries mean I can talk

Patrick Korellis, who was shot in the back of his head and in his arm that day, said he attended the memorial to pay tribute to his classmates and catch up with others who were affected by the tragedy. He graduated from NIU in 2008.

“It’s difficult to come back here,” he said. “I haven’t been back since the fifth-year memorial, but I figured it would be time to come back again.”

Korellis said he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, reliving the incident whenever he hears loud noises or learns of mass shootings on the news.

“Live life to the fullest,” he said.

“Try to accomplish your goals because you just never know. I was very lucky; five of my classmates weren’t, and it’s just something that I always think about.”

Gary Parmenter, father of Daniel Parmenter, said the university has

been supportive of their loss over the years.

“I appreciate that NIU is able to hold the memorial site so we can congregate any time of the year, especially on the anniversary,” he said.

NIU senior Arleen Marquez-Lopez said she remembered hearing about the shooting in 2008 when she was still in grade school, and being on campus today, she has come to better understand the incident’s impact.

She said the memorial shows how the community has come together to push forward after a tragic event.

“It really just shows the resiliency of NIU and the community,” Marquez-Lopez said. “I was really drawn to that applying to this school, and you feel connected even though it was years ago.”

NIU senior Alexis Corona also recalled learning about the shooting nine years ago, adding that the emotional presence during Tuesday’s memorial was so strong that “you feel as if you were here when it happened.”

D-427 board hears plan for personnel cuts

SYCAMORE – Sycamore School District 427 could be eliminating about 35 positions next school year under a proposal district officials are considering to reach a balanced budget by the end of the 2017-18 school year.

The District 427 board heard about the proposal Tuesday as part of the district’s three-year budget reduction plan.

The personnel reductions are part of the district’s strategy to reduce the budget by $2.3 million in fiscal 2018.

The reductions would eliminate roughly 17 teaching positions, including five full-time high school teachers, four reading teachers, three spe-

cial education teachers, 3.2 teachers in library, physical education, technology or art, and 1.6 teachers of elective classes.

The plan would also eliminate 0.6 social worker positions, 0.6 school counselor positions and one school nurse.

From the support staff, five special education assistants would be eliminated along with three other classroom assistants, one math interventionist, five reading interventionists, one part-time reading interventionist and one clerical position.

Superintendent Kathy Countryman said that the number of people eliminated would not be the same as the number of positions cut when staff retirements are taken into account.

tion on certified staff positions March 14 and the educational support staff positions in April.

Last year, the district dismissed 18 employees, including 12 full-time teachers. This was after laying off four full-time employees and three part-time employees and reducing four positions in 2015.

Chief Financial Officer Nicole Stuckert said budget updates would be brought to the board in May, with a proposed budget in June and the final budget in August.

Stuckert said the district has not received all four of its categorical payments from the state in the past few years, and it is expected to receive only two of them this year.

“If we don’t get that payment every quarter, it’s hard for us to be able to pay bills on time,” she said.

Born: July 9, 1928; in Elgin, IL Died: February 13, 2017; in DeKalb, IL

Rene H. Eineke, age 88, of DeKalb, IL, died on Monday, February 13, 2017 in Bethany Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in DeKalb.

Born on July 9, 1928 in Elgin, IL, and was the son of George and Esther (Engel) Eineke.

Rene was married to the former Jeannene Clausen on June 5, 1948 in Genoa, IL, she preceded him in death on December 3, 1996.

Rene worked at Northern Illinois University in the Heating Plant for 26 years, retiring on January 1, 1990. He has lived in the DeKalb community since 1950 moving here from Genoa. Rene was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in DeKalb, and was also a member of the DeKalb Elks #765, and the DeKalb Moose #586.

Survivors include daughter, Katherine (Kenneth) Frank of DeKalb; son, Ken Eineke of Chicago; grandson, Max Frank of St. Paul, MN; sister, Carol (Bruce) Wagner of FL; half brother, Charles (Becky) Johnson of WA; and his closest friend and companion, Mary Ebbesen of DeKalb.

Preceded in death by parents; and wife, Jeannene.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday February 18, 2017 at 2:00 pm in the Finch Funeral Home with Pastor Ray Krueger of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating.

Cremation will follow the service at the Finch Crematory. Visitation will be held on Saturday February 18, 2017 at 1:00 pm till the time of the service in the funeral home.

SYCAMORE – Police seized more than $10,000 in cash and nearly a pound of marijuana along with Ecstasy and other drugs during a raid Friday.

Sycamore police searched the home of Samuel I. MacAdam, 26, of the 300 block of Orchard Lane, Sycamore, on Friday after getting Samuel I. a tip about drug sales MacAdam there. MacAdam, who faces felony drug charges, was released from jail Sunday after posting $5,000 bail, or 10 percent of his $50,000 bond.

During the search, police found more than 14 ounces of marijuana, 8.7 grams of Ecstasy, a small amount of cocaine and a prescription pill containing hydrocodone, according to a

police synopsis contained in court records.

MacAdam told police that he was selling a half pound of marijuana a week, along with several grams of Ecstasy a month. He told police that he uses cocaine, police reports show.

Police also found $10,800 in cash in a safe in the home. MacAdam said some of the money in the safe was proceeds from selling drugs, according to court records.

MacAdam faces a litany of drug charges related to possession of marijuana, Ecstasy, cocaine and prescription drugs. If convicted of the most serious charge, possession of Ecstasy with intent to deliver, he could face four to 15 years in prison.

His attorney, Robert Motta, didn’t return a message seeking comment Tuesday.

MacAdam is next due in court March 24.

Fraternity suspended after reports of sexual assaults at house

EVANSTON – The Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter at Northwestern University has been suspended by its national headquarters after allegations of sexual assault at the local fraternity house.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the suspension was confirmed Friday.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon spokesman Brandon Weghorst says the chapter has to “cease and desist all operations,” meaning it can’t hold chapter meetings, attend fraternity social events or take part in other activities under the fraternity’s banner.

The newspaper has reported that Northwestern administrators issued a security alert Feb. 6 after reports that as many as four female students were possibly given a date rape drug last month during an event at the fraternity’s house. Two of the women said they were sexually assaulted.

Rauner to push funding more state police cadets

CHICAGO – A Chicago toddler was shot and killed on Tuesday in what police suspect was a “gang hit” on a man in a vehicle with her, just a few days after two young girls were shot in the head. It marked the latest spasm of violence in a city struggling to contain such attacks.

Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said police suspect the man, a well-known gang member with an extensive criminal history, was the target of the shooting that also left a woman wounded.

The shootings highlight the street gang violence that police said was largely responsible for 762 homicides last year – nearly 300 more than occurred in 2015 – and more than 3,500 shooting incidents.

Those kinds of numbers help explain why Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office said he will announce on Wednesday in his budget speech a push to fund 200 more state police cadets to patrol Chicago-area expressways. In 2016, there were 51 shootings on those roadways, compared with 37 in 2015.

Phyllis J. Kocher, 86, of Sycamore died Sunday, February 12, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born June 23, 1930 in Genoa to Alvin and Jennie (Wellander) Peterson. She married Floyd E. Kocher on April 22, 1950 at the St. Mary Rectory in Sycamore. They had 62 years of a happy marriage before he died on May 29, 2012.

Phyllis drove a school bus for the Sycamore School District for many years. She was a devoted member of the Church of St. Mary, where she was a former president of the Altar and Rosary Society, served on several committees and was active in the schools Backels Club.

She and her husband belonged to the Sycamore Elks Club, the Sycamore VFW and the Bit and Spur Saddle Club. They enjoyed bowling, camping and playing cards with friends.

Survivors include her children, Michelle (Dave) Ostrom and John (Rebecca) Kocher; four grandchildren, Jason Corn, Allison and

Reed Kocher and Kayla Whitney; one great granddaughter, Aubrey June Corn; four step grandchildren, Kelly, Bret, Tyler and Whitney; one step great-granddaughter, Ari; one brother-in-law, Wilbur (Mary) Kocher; two sistersin-law, Carolyn and Darlene Peterson; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers; and one sister.

Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Butala Funeral Home and Crematory in Sycamore. Her Funeral Mass will be on Friday, Feb. 17th at 11:30 AM at the Church of St. Mary, 244 Waterman St., Sycamore, IL., with Fr. Paul Lipinski officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

RUTH EDNA RICH

Born: December 17, 1934 Died: February 13, 2017 Ruth Edna Rich, 82, formerly of Kirkland, died peacefully at DeKalb County Rehab and

Nursing Center on Monday, February 13, 2017.

She was born on December 17, 1934, in Sycamore, to Herman and Blanche (Quigley) Riffle. Ruth graduated in 1952 from Sycamore High School and on October 23, 1954, she married Clarence “Ockie” Edward Rich. Ockie died July 21, 2002 after 48 years of marriage. For more than 40 years, Ruth worked at The National Bank & Trust Co. of Sycamore as the Safety Deposit Manager, a job she began in her high school work-study program, retiring in 1999. Although she treasured her customers and took pride in serving them faithfully, Ruth’s heart was first and foremost in being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She leaves behind a legacy of loving-kindness and care for family, friends, and pets alike.

Ruth was also a DeKalb County Hospice volunteer, member of Sycamore United Methodist, and a member of the DeKalb County Farm Bureau.

Ruth is survived by her children Vickie (Scott) Smith of Mattoon, IL, Norm Rich of Laguna Niguel, CA, and Mary Ellen (Randy) Taylor of Rochelle, IL; grandchildren, Nicolas Smith of Missoula, MT, Sabrina Smith of Grapevine, TX, Bryce (Carolyn) Keilman of Waterford, WI and Brittney (Anthony) Wyatt

MALTA – Kishwaukee College President Laurie Borowicz received a new contract set for a longer term and a $10,000 increase in salary during the Tuesday’s board of trustees meeting.

The decision passed without opposition and the president received a round of applause from the board for her work since taking the position in January 2016.

Borowicz’s original contract had her employed until June 30, Laurie 2019, at an initial salary of Borowicz $175,000. The board would also make a contribution on behalf of the Borowicz to the State Universities Retirement System equal to 4 percent of her salary.

Her new contract has her employed until June 30, 2021, at an initial annual salary of $185,000. In addition, the board would make an SURS contribution equal to 8 percent of Borowicz’s annual salary.

Board Chairman Robert Johnson said that Borowicz’s first contract was

conservative since she did not have any experience as a college president.

Borowicz was the vice president of student services for Northcentral Technical College in Wausau, Wisconsin, before becoming Kishwaukee College’s president.

“I don’t think anyone realizes a president isn’t just a job but a way of life,” Johnson said. “Borowicz has demonstrated that she is all in, and we hope she sticks around a long time, and I believe that is her intention.”

Johnson added that the new contract does not overpay her in comparison with contracts for presidents of similar-sized schools.

During a closed session last month, the board decided it was appropriate to offer Borowicz a new contract that was more reflective of the work she has put into the college.

After negotiating with Borowicz, Johnson asked an attorney to draw out a new contract that is in compliance with Illinois statutes.

“The board has been very generous to me,” Borowicz said. “We’re a great college, and we have lots of great work to do.”

Officials: Trump knew Flynn misled his aides

WASHINGTON – Just six days into his presidency, Donald Trump was informed his national security adviser had misled his vice president about contacts with Russia. Trump kept his No. 2 in the dark and waited another two weeks before ousting the aide, Michael Flynn, citing a slow but steady erosion of trust, White House officials said Tuesday.

Flynn was interviewed by the FBI about his telephone conversations with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S., a sign his ties to Russia had caught the attention of law enforcement officials.

But in the White House’s retelling of Flynn’s stunning downfall, his error was not that he discussed U.S. sanctions with the Russian before the inauguration – a potential violation of a rarely enforced law – but the fact that he denied it for weeks, apparently misleading Vice President Mike Pence and other senior Trump aides about the nature of the conversations. White House officials said they conducted a thorough review of Flynn’s interactions, including transcripts of calls secretly recorded by U.S. intelligence officials, but found nothing illegal.

Pence, who had vouched for Flynn in a televised interview, is said to have been angry and deeply frustrated.

“The evolving and eroding level of trust as a result of this situation and a series of other questionable incidents is what led the president to ask General Flynn for his resignation,” White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Tuesday, one day after the president asked Flynn to leave.

Flynn, in an interview with The Daily Caller News Foundation, said Monday “there were no lines crossed” in his conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

While the president was said to be upset with Flynn, he also expressed anger with other aides for “losing control” of the story and making his young administration look bad.

Pence spokesman Marc Lotter said Pence became aware that he had received “incomplete information” from Flynn only after the first Washington Post report Thursday night.

Pence learned about the Justice Department warnings to the White House around the same time.

The officials and others with knowledge of the situation were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and requested anonymity.

Ahead of the Jan. 20 inauguration, Pence and other officials insisted publicly that Flynn had not discussed sanctions in his talks with Kislyak.

On Jan. 26, Acting Attorney General Sally Yates contacted White House counsel Don McGahn to raise concerns about discrepancies between the public accounting and what intelligence officials knew to be true about the contacts based on routine recordings of communications with foreign officials who are in the U.S.

Squeeze play only concern in plan There’s a lot to like – and one big thing not to like – in the proposal for a new four-story, 51-unit luxury apartment building near the intersection of First Street and Lincoln Highway in downtown DeKalb.

Developer John Pappas’ “Cornerstone DeKalb” plan would solve the lingering problem of having a large vacant building at the entrance to downtown. It also would replace four aging buildings whose value mostly has fallen or stagnated over the past 30 years.

The project would create a new, attractive building with new retail space, including a restaurant, and add full-time residents to the downtown area, boosting the customer base for other area businesses. The residents would also have their own dedicated parking area, a problem that has derailed other residential proposals in the area.

The project also presumably would end the city’s quest to have the vacant building demolished – which is estimated to cost more than $400,000.

Instead, Pappas wants the city to contribute $3 million in tax increment financing funds.

According to data supplied by the city, two of the four properties Pappas plans to demolish have declined in value since 1985, and only one has seen any significant appreciation. Replacing them with new apartments and retail space would improve property values and raise rental values.

City officials expect that replacing the old buildings with a new one would generate enough property tax revenue to recoup the $3 million investment in less than a decade, a long-view estimate that seems plausible.

The plan is to split the city’s contribution into two parts, $1.5 million to help with building acquisition, site work and remediation, and a later $1.5 million contribution to offset construction costs.

City estimates that the redevelopment would generate $500,000 to $900,000 in TIF revenue if completed on schedule. An outside consultant has evaluated the project and considers a $3 million incentive reasonable, according to city documents.

The only thing not to like is that it’s a squeeze play.

The city is being asked to make a $3 million investment in a project that it will have about three weeks to consider.

According to city documents, the due diligence period on the contracts to buy the buildings – purchases – expires in early March. So the city will embark on a hasty approval process, with a zoning hearing on the plan set for today, and the council to consider the plan Feb. 27.

There is a lot of public financing at stake in this deal, not to mention the prestige of downtown DeKalb. It is a once-in-a-generation type of project, and it feels wrong to be asked to consider it under an artificially imposed deadline.

This plan presents a rare opportunity for DeKalb, but even under an expedited timeline, it requires thorough evaluation. It’s too important to rush through the process without making sure it’s right for the city.

Civil forfeiture a national scandal When President Donald Trump recently offered to “ruin the career” of the Texas lawmaker pushing civil forfeiture reform, the ensuing political maelstrom made headlines for days. But far more important than the president’s remarks, which seemed to have been offered at least half in jest, is the question of whether the laws need changing in the first place.

Boy, do they. Civil forfeiture as practiced in Texas and many other states is an affront to even the most basic notions of due process and of presumed innocence. It’s also a direct assault of property rights.

In Texas, the government routinely seizes cash, cars, homes and other valuables for people suspected of certain crimes, especially those related to drugs. A suspected drug dealer may have a satchel of cash seized. Or a parent whose adult child is accused of dealing drugs in the home even may have the house seized.

The scandal is that the government often gets to keep the money even if the suspects are never convicted or, as in many cases, never even charged.

If the property belongs to someone else – say, the suspect had borrowed a car or lived with a parent or friend – the true owners must, at their own considerable expense, prove they were “innocent owners.”

That’s a burden of proof higher than what it takes to convict a defendant. If they can’t prove it, they lose the property – whether they had anything to do with the crime or not.

This system ought to offend anyone, liberal or conservative, who values property rights, respects due process or values simple fairness.

It’s true local departments have come to depend on money from these forfeitures. Federal agencies reported more than $4.5 billion worth of seized property in 2014, with some paid back to victims but much more shared with local, state and federal law enforcement. In Texas, the annual total seized by state and local officials was more than $63 million in 2013. Local officials have been dinged in the past for violating rules on how to spend the money, too.

Eavenson like the program. But his decision to squander his time with the president to complain about reform efforts was a poor one.

The bills filed to fix this situation need help, not scorn.

Perhaps the best bill this session has been filed by Sen. Konni Burton, a Colleyville Republican.

SB 380 would require that seized property be returned unless the suspect is convicted of a crime.

Even then, the owner would be entitled to a hearing to determine whether the value of the seized properly is massively out of proportion to the crime itself.

The bill, which reasonably includes a dozen or so broadly worded exceptions, also would require the government to return property to third parties who were not convicted, unless it can show they were somehow involved or had knowledge of the crime.

Civil forfeiture is a national scandal, and reforms are needed

by Congress, too. But Texas lawmakers have the chance to clean up our house first, and they should do so while the current Legislature meets.

Open letter to our so-called president Dear Mr. So-Called President: So let me explain to you how this works.

You were elected as chief executive of the United States. I won’t belabor the fact that you won with a minority of the popular vote and a little help from your friends, FBI Director James Comey and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The bottom line is, you were elected.

And this does entitle you to certain things. You get your own airplane.

You get free public housing. You get greeted with snappy salutes. And a band plays when you walk into the room.

But there is one thing to which your election does not entitle you. It does not entitle you to do whatever pops into your furry orange head without being called on it or, should it run afoul of the Constitution, without being blocked.

You and other members of the Fourth Reich seem to be having difficulty understanding this. Reports from Politico and elsewhere describe you as shocked that judges and lawmakers can delay or even stop you

On Sunday, senior policy adviser Stephen Miller declared on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that “our opponents, the media and the whole world will soon see as we begin to take further actions, that the powers of the president to protect our country are very substantial and will not be questioned.”

What you do “will not be questioned?” Lord, have mercy. That’s the kind of statement that, in another time and place, would have been greeted with an out-thrust palm and a hearty “Sieg heil!” Here in this time and place, however, it demands a different response: Just who the hell do you think you are?

Meaning you and all the other trolls you have brought clambering up from under their bridges. Maybe you didn’t notice, but this is the United States of America. Perhaps you’ve heard of it? Nation of laws, not of individuals? First Amendment?

Freedom of the press? Any of that ringing a bell?

Let’s be brutally clear here. If you were a smart guy with unimpeachable integrity and a good heart who was enacting wise policies for the betterment of all humankind, you’d still be subject to sharp scrutiny from news media, oversight from Congress, restraint by the judiciary – and public opinion.

And you, of course, are none of those things.

I know you fetishize strength. I know your pal Vladimir would never stand still for reporters and judges yapping at him like so many poodles.

I know, too, that you are accustomed to being emperor of your own fiefdom. Must be nice. Your name on the wall, the paychecks, the side of the building. You tell people to make something happen, and it does. You

yell at a problem, and it goes away.

Nobody talks back. I can see how it would be hard to give that up.

But you did. You see, you’re no longer an emperor, Mr. So-Called President. You are now what is called a “public servant” – in effect, an employee with 324 million bosses.

And let me tell you something about those bosses. They are unruly and loud, long accustomed to speaking their minds without fear or fetter.

And they believe power must always answer to the people. That’s at the core of their identity.

Yet you and your coterie of cartoon autocrats think you’re going to cow them into silence and compliance by ordering them to shut up and obey? Well, as a freeborn American, I can answer that in two syllables flat.

Hell no.

Cogs hold off late Warriors rally

dweidman@saukvalley.com STERLING – What looked to be a laugher for the Genoa-Kingston girls basketball team was on the verge of becoming something not too funny at all.

The Cogs let a big lead slip away against Sterling on Tuesday night in a Class 3A Sterling Regional semifinal, but bounced back late to post a 57-44 victory against the Golden Warriors in Musgrove Fieldhouse.

Genoa-Kingston (20-7) will meet Rock Falls, a 54-36 winner against Dixon in the second semifinal, for a regional title on Thursday.

The Cogs scored the first 10 points against Sterling (6-25) and were in control for a good chunk of the contest.

Genoa-Kingston’s biggest lead was 23 points, last achieved at 46-23 with seven minutes to play after a layup from senior guard Julie Galauner.

Sterling, however, showed some fight at the end and made things interesting. Sophomore guard Josi Borum scored 15 of her team-high 21 points in the final quarter, and her 3-pointer brought the Golden Warriors to within 52-44 with 1:06 on the clock.

“We play really good when things are clicking, and when they’re not, we kind of get down,” Borum said. “The fourth quarter, we just kept going.”

Galauner hit 3 of 4 free throws on the Cogs’ next two possessions, and G-K’s Jesi Nay and Hannah Schwichtenberg produced steals on the defensive end to prevent Sterling from getting any closer. A late bucket from Schwichtenberg accounted for the final margin.

While happy his team won, G-K coach Kyle Henkel was less than pleased.

“We forgot the game was 32 minutes,” Henkel said. “We were taking quick shots, we were careless with the ball, and then we didn’t want the ball badly enough back on defense to hold them to only one shot. Rebounding has been an issue for us all year, but there’s times when you’ve got to go and make plays, and we didn’t do that. We did hit free throws down the stretch, and that made a big difference.”

Galauner poured in 29 points to lead the Cogs, though she was just 9-for-23 from the field. Nay wound up with 15 points, while Schwichtenberg collected 10 rebounds. The Cogs were outrebounded, 42-32, by the Warriors.

“They had a lot of offensive rebounds, and that hurt us at the end,” Galauner said. “I know that was get-

The Barbs (16-10, 8-3) had been in a bit of a funk lately, losing four out of five games coming into the night – including a 57-39 loss Saturday at Geneseo.

“Tonight is hopefully the springboard of us getting out of it and having a good rest of the season,” Biancalana said of the tough patch.

BOYS BASKETBALL: YORKVILLE 46, SYCAMORE 41

DeKalb turned on its defense in the first and third quarters in the win over the Pirates. The Barbs held Ottawa to four points in each quarter, and the Pirates shot 1 for 13 in the first quarter and 1 for 9 in the third.

“When we’re playing well, it’s built around our defense,” Biancalana said.

By the numbers: The Barbs dominated the glass, outrebounding Ottawa, 38-19. Mitchell led the way with nine rebounds, while Marcus Bobo had seven and Blalock had six.

Beyond the stats: DeKalb held Ottawa scoreless for nearly five minutes to start the third quarter. The Pirates didn’t score until a free throw by Tucker with 3:14 left in the period.

They said it: “We were hanging in there in the first half,” Biancalana said. “The key to the game was that we had control at halftime (leading 23-21) with three guys with two fouls apiece.”

Up next: DeKalb has its senior night against Kaneland on Friday and Ottawa hosts Geneseo on Friday.

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Despite a late-game push by the Spartans, Sycamore fell to Yorkville, 46-41, on Tuesday night.

The teams traded baskets with no team leading by more than four points until late in the fourth quarter, when Yorkville pulled away behind Javell Moore’s dominant late-game performance.

Moore scored eight fourth-quarter points, along with a steal and big block to kill any momentum for Sycamore.

Moore led Yorkville (11-13, 4-6 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) with 13 points.

“It’s kind of the story of our season where the game is tight, and then we just don’t do enough to get a victory,” Spartans coach Ryan Picolotti said.

“Our kids played really hard tonight, they fought really hard. It’s just kind of the way it’s been.”

Jordan Tolzien did his best to keep the Spartans close late, with two 3-pointers in the final 25 seconds, but Moore

and the Foxes hit free throws late to close out the game. Jack Mizgalski led the Spartans (10-14, 3-9) with 13 points.

“In the first half, shots weren’t falling.

We got a couple good looks in the fourth quarter,” Yorkville coach Mike Dunn said. “They started playing zone and we ran a couple sets against them and got some layups, which was big for us.”

By the numbers: Keyshawn Stallworth dominated the first quarter, scoring all eight Spartans points, but scored two more points the rest of the game, fouling out in the final minute.

Beyond the stats: Logan Habada drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the third quarter to give the Foxes the lead for good.

They said it: “It’s a typical, tough nose grind of a game,” Dunn said on playing the Spartans. “They’re tough. They run good stuff. We’re fortunate to come in here and get a win.”

Up next: Sycamore faces off against Ottawa at home Saturday at 6 p.m.

Yorkville travels to take on Morris at 7 p.m. Friday.

DeKALB – Headed to the foul line in the final minute of the game, DeKalb senior guard Cole Tucker’s free throw bounced off the rim multiple times.

However, DeKalb senior big man DeMonte Blalock snuck in for the offensive rebound and putback that gave the Barbs enough cushion Tuesday night in a 49-44 victory over Ottawa in DeKalb.

“DeMonte has given us tremendous energy coming off the bench,” DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said. “He’s a steady player. He gets tough rebounds and finishes inside. He’s an undersized player, but his heart isn’t undersized.

He brings it every game.”

Blalock got plenty of playing time off the bench Tuesday against the Pi-

rates (15-7, 6-4 Northern Illinois Big 12 West), with starting big man Darvon Sisson going to the bench with two fouls just 2:31 into the game.

Blalock, who is listed at 6-foot, finished with a team-high 11 points and added a pair of free throws with 9.7 seconds left in the game for the Barbs.

Tucker missed the front end of a oneand-one with DeKalb leading, 40-34, and 1:02 left in the game before Blalock came up with the putback.

DeKalb senior guard Michael Mitchell had nine points and a teamhigh nine rebounds, and junior guard Mikey Vilet added seven points.

Ottawa senior McKe Tucker scored a game-high 23 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter.

With the victory, DeKalb clinched its third consecutive Northern Illinois Big 12 East crown under Biancalana, who is in his third year with the Barbs.

CHICAGO – Doug McDermott scored 20 points, All-Star Jimmy Butler had 19 points and 12 assists in his return to the lineup, and the Bulls continued their mastery over the Toronto Raptors in a 105-94 victory on Tuesday night.

Taj Gibson had 14 points and Rajon Rondo added 12 to help the Bulls beat the Raptors for the 11th straight time.

Toronto’s last win in the series was Dec. 31, 2013.

Sophomore guard Wilson, NIU mutually part ways DAILY CHRONICLE

sports@daily-chronicle.com Marshawn Wilson and the Northern Illinois have mutually parted ways, the school said in a statement released 90 minutes before the team’s home game Tuesday.

“After meeting with Marshawn, it was mutually decided that the best course of action at this time is for him to have a fresh start with another program,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said. “We appreciate Marshawn’s contributions to our program and wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.”

In 18 games this season, Wilson averaged 4.9 points and 2.1 rebounds a game. He has seen his time decrease as the year has gone on.

It’s been a tumultuous season for Wilson, who came to the Huskies from Oakdale, Minnesota, and was on the same traveling team in high school as current teammates Levi Bradley and Jaylen Key. He missed two games earlier in the season – Nov. 25 against Elon and Nov. 26 against UIC, both games that the Huskies lost – that Montgomery cited as a suspension.

He also had a two-game stretch in which he didn’t play – at home against Central Michigan on Jan. 7 and at Kent State on Jan. 10, both of which the Huskies won.

He hadn’t played in the past three games, and Montgomery said after the Eastern Michigan game on Feb. 4 that

When it comes to planning party menus, we often think the most special dishes are the most complicated ones, with exotic and expensive ingredients.

But often, it’s the classic recipes that rely on familiar flavors your guests will remember.

Food trends are cyclical, and right now, to the benefit of party hosts and chefs, diners are craving unfussy recipes that rely on the quality of its ingredients. This party classic for prosciutto and melon canapes is a quick-and-easy small bite that will shine on your Oscar party table.

A canape is a small, one-or-two bite hors d’oeuvre, usually consisting of a piece of bread or cracker topped with, well, anything. They are great for parties, since they are not too filling and easy to eat when one hand is occupied by a glass of champagne.

And for the host, they are a breeze to make.

You can make toppings ahead of time, such as chutneys or caramelized onions, or even rely on prepared ingredients with great flavor combinations.

Brie and fig jam on crackers, for example, needs no preparation. Prosciutto, a salty cured ham from Italy, and melon are a classic combination. Thanks to our global food market, sweet cantaloupe and honeydew melons can be found year-round, and their brightness reminds us there is some warm sunshine following the cold winter.

We like to spread our soft white bread canape base with a little bit of mascarpone cheese before topping it, but you could even use a soft goat cheese or an herbed spreadable fresh cheese.

This canape relies on flavor from the melon. Look for melons with no stem attached, since that means they were picked mature. Also, search for ones with a thick, pronounced netting on the exterior of the skin, and it should be tan.

Prosciutto and Melon Canape Start to finish: 25 minutes Servings: 30

8 very thin slices prosciutto (about 5 ounces) 30 (1 ½-inch-diamater) round white bread canapé bases, toasted 5 ounces mascarpone cheese, or as needed 30 pieces cantaloupe, cut into medium dice, or scooped into 1/2-inch balls 30 mint leaves, for garnish Fold the prosciutto to fit the canape bases.

To assemble the canapes, spread the canapé with some of the mascarpone cheese and top with a piece of prosciutto. Pipe a small mound of mascarpone in the center of each canapé and top with cut melon. Top each canape with a mint leaf.

Chef’s note: You can be very flexible with this recipe and easily change the look of the canape by simply cutting the melon into different shapes, such as slices, rings and diamonds.

Use a different base in place of the bread: Your favorite chip or a curled sweet potato chip can make a festive presentation.

Whether you are a film fanatic or just in it for the gowns, awards season is a no-brainer excuse for a theme party. Hollywood glitz and glamour offers the perfect opportunity to pull out your fancy Champagne flutes and costume jewelry for an affair to remember.

Maybe you’re partial to a menu of bad film-food puns (Manchester by the Sea-Salt Caramels?), but if you prefer a more refined gathering, the best place to start is with the right cocktail.

This recipe for a Red Carpet Royal is a traditional champagne cocktail that’s dressed for the biggest night in Hollywood, which falls on Feb. 26. We’ve added some gold leaf, which you should be able to find in most specialty stores, because we like the sparkle. If you prefer minimalism, you can leave the gold leaf out and have an equally delicious cocktail.

We call for a sugar cube placed at the bottom of each glass. Although you can use granulated sugar or simple syrup instead, the sugar cube creates an experience for you and your guests.

As the sugar dissolves, it helps to create layers while it slowly sweetens the cocktail. Your first sip will be unlike your last, and all the while, the cube will be sending up bubbles for Academy Award-worthy drama.

Although the cocktail shouldn’t be mixed ahead, you can prepare your lemon curl garnish earlier in the day. Make the Royals on demand to make every guest feel like a VIP, and you’re sure to land a nod for best host.

Red Carpet Royal

Serving: One Start to finish: 10 minutes 1 sugar cube 2 dashes lemon bitters 1 sheet of gold leaf 1 ounce elderflower liqueur 4.5 ounces sparkling wine Lemon zest, as needed Put the sugar cube in the bottom of a flute and add bitters.

Separate the sheet of gold leaf into quarters and place in the bottom of the glass. Add elderflower liqueur, then top with sparkling wine.

Using a channel knife, cut around the axis of the lemon to create a long spiral thread of zest. Place into glass.

Instructor’s note: If you are without a channel knife you can create the spiral using a peeler. Start at the top of the lemon and zest a long continuous spiral around the lemon.

When you lay the lemon strip on a cutting board, it should resemble an “S.” Using a sharp knife, cut the jagged edge off of one side of the peel. Return to the clean edge and cut another thin strip following the contour of the zest.

Charcuterie boards an impressive appetizer

Who says you can enjoy a charcuterie board only when you go out to eat? Restaurants have made them a diner’s favorite, and many restaurants become destinations based on their ability to source great meats and cheeses.

With a little planning, you can do this same thing any night of the week.

In fact, you don’t even need to go to a fancy store to get the provisions. Most grocery stores have everything you need.

Once you find your favorite dried sausage, keep it on hand. It lasts for a very long time in the fridge and is handy to pull out when people stop over unexpectedly for a drink. My favorite sausages are reasonably priced, vacuum-sealed, have a good lean to fat ratio and are very clean tasting. These days, it’s easy to find very good dried sausages.

When shopping for a party, plan on

3 ounces of charcuterie a person for an appetizer and about twice that if it’s the only food being served. With bread and olives, pickles and nuts, that should be enough to satiate all of your meat-loving friends and family.

Your charcuterie board can be as simple as one dried sausage, olives, nuts and a special mustard dipping sauce or make it a little more expansive by adding a paté, thin-sliced prosciutto, chunks of real Parmesan or pecorino and another mustard for dipping and spreading. Bread and butter, homemade seeded crackers, fresh ricotta cheese, good olive oil and cocktail rye also are good choices.

I like to dress up my favorite mustards with jam, herbs and spices.

It’s easy to make but adds that special touch that will make your charcuterie board even more craveable than the one at your favorite restaurant. Add your favorite flavors to the mustard and just pick a jam and an herb that you like together.

Most importantly, have fun with

your combinations. A charcuterie board is easy, elegant and a guaranteed crowd pleaser. The winner of the night for my last party was the original Apricot Sweet and Sharp Mustard. It’s as simple as mixing mustards and jam together, and the variations are endless.

The Kishwaukee College EMSA Program will accept applications for the 2017-2018 academic year through March 1. Students who are high school juniors currently enrolled in or have already completed pre-calculus and general chemistry at their high schools are eligible to apply.

EMSA is a program designed for students who will enter their senior year in high school in the fall of 2017. EMSA has two academic tracks available: Track One for students interested in pursuing a degree in engineering or physics and Track Two for students interested in pursuing a “pre-professional” major in college, for example, veterinary sciences, medicine, pharmacy, or physical therapy. All of these fields – engineering, hard sciences, computer science and pre-professional – have a math and science base that is more in-depth than other career paths.

Track One students take Calculus and Analytic Geometry I in the summer prior to their senior year in high school. In the fall, they will take Calculus II and Physics for Science and Engineering I. In spring 2018, they will complete the Academy with Calculus III and Physics II. Track Two students begin with the same Calculus and Analytic Geometry I class in summer, but in fall will take General Chemistry I and General Physics I, followed by General Chemistry II and General Physics II in spring 2018.

During the fall and spring semesters, students will attend classes at Kishwaukee College at 7:30 a.m. and return to their high school at 10 a.m. to attend their senior year classes there as well as participate in extracurricular activities.

Taking classes through EMSA allows area seniors to get a jumpstart on their college career by fulfilling science and math course requirements for a fraction of the cost of university tuition.

The courses are compatible with the equivalent courses offered by the University of Illinois and Northern Illinois University, to maximize transferability of 23 to 26 credit hours, which is nearly one full year of college course credits.

Students who have attended EMSA have transferred to University of Illinois, NIU, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Case Western Reserve University, Cornell University, Harvard and many other four-year institutions.

Know effects of taking PPIs Dear Doctor: Because I had an ulcer, three years ago a doctor wrote me a prescription for Prilosec and told me I had to take it for the rest of my life. But lately, articles in the newspaper have seemed to contradict his thinking, suggesting that Prilosec and similar medicines can cause heart problems. What’s your opinion?

Dear Reader: Prilosec is one of many proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) that include Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix, Nexium and Dexilant.

These drugs work by blocking the formation of hydrogen chloride in the stomach. This very strong acid is necessary to break down proteins so they can be absorbed by the small intestine.

I don’t know the specifics about the causes of your stomach ulcer – the size, the depth, whether it was a bleeding ulcer or caused by aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medications – but I do agree with your doctor that a proton pump inhibitor would be necessary for the healing of the ulcer. These drugs decrease the acidity of your upper gastrointestinal tract, allowing for an ulcer to heal. The normal duration for treatment is from two to 12 weeks.

In some circumstances, a PPI needs to be continued indefinitely, such as when an ulcer doesn’t heal, when an older patient has an ulcer that’s larger than 2 centimeters, or when a patient has three or more ulcers per year.

People with recurrent acid reflux also need to be on prolonged courses of proton pump inhibitors.

While there are benefits to these medications, there also are downsides. Any drug that changes the normal physiological process of the body can have unintended consequences, and PPIs are no exception. With prolonged use, the decreased formation of hydrogen chloride in the stomach can decrease calcium absorption and bone strengthening, increasing the risk of osteoporosis. Prolonged use can also reduce the absorption of magnesium and B12, and increase the risk of intestinal infections, such as those caused by Clostridium

difficile, leading to severe diarrhea.

As for your specific question about proton pump inhibitors and heart disease, a 2014 study published in the International Journal of Cardiology compared more than 126,000 people who took PPIs with an equal number who didn’t. After 120 days, researchers found a 58 percent increase in the risk of heart attacks among those who took them. The biggest problem with this study is that the authors couldn’t assess whether those in the study smoked cigarettes, were obese or had a family history of heart disease. A 2015 study published in the journal PLOS One analyzed large amounts of data both from people who used PPIs for gastroesophageal reflux and those who didn’t. In this study, researchers found a 16 percent increase in the rate of heart attacks among those who took PPIs. Finally, an analysis of 11 studies -- with a total of more than 84,000 patients -- looked at use of proton pump inhibitors in people taking the blood thinner Plavix after having an angioplasty.

The authors found a 37 percent increase in the rate of heart events among those taking the proton pump inhibitor Clopidogrel with Plavix and those taking just Plavix, but they found no difference in death rates. The findings suggest that PPIs decrease the ability of a blood thinner, like Plavix, to work.

Your worry about taking Prilosec for the rest of your life is understandable, but you’re probably on the drug for a good reason. Just know that there can be long-term side effects, and be aware of them. You can also ask your doctor to keep you apprised of any new research on long-term use of PPIs.

He may be flattered by the attention he’s receiving from a younger woman, or he may think he’s actually in love with her. Whether she is in love with him is open to question.

However, if your husband is giving her money, you might have an argument he is being manipulated into it, which could qualify as elder abuse. Remember, too, if you are a longtime wife in a community property state, half of the assets acquired during your marriage are yours.

If he doesn’t agree to end the relationship, this is something you might want to discuss with a lawyer.

Dear Abby: My 7-year-old daughter, “Jessie,” has a best friend who lives next door. The neighbor, “Laurie,” has an older brother, “Jason,” who is 13.

Recently, Jessie played at Laurie’s house, and when she came home she told me Jason had said some nasty things to her. When I asked what they were, she told me that one time Jason told her to pull down her underwear, and another time he told her to pull down his pants and do something that can’t be mentioned in a family newspaper.

When I heard it, I was livid. I told his mother about it, and now she will not let my daughter play with Laurie. She believes Jessie made it all up. My daughter is inconsolable because she no longer has a playmate. She believes it is her fault Laurie can’t play with her because she told me. I don’t know what to do so the girls can play together. – Needs a Playmate Dear Needs: It is important that you make Jessie understand that none of this was her fault – it was Jason’s fault – and she did the right thing by telling you. What you need to do now is help your daughter find other playmates, preferably some whose parents supervise when children play in their home.

While Jason’s mother may not want to believe what her son did, it’s highly unlikely your daughter made it up. Dealing with a problem like that by putting her head in the sand only will invite more trouble, because Jason is sure to repeat it with some other little girl.

South’s strong-club sequence promised a balanced 22-24; he rightly upgraded for the five-card suit and excellent controls (four aces and a king).

West, nervous of leading a redsuit king, chose the spade 10.

Declarer won with his jack and played two rounds of clubs. After West threw the heart six, East won with the king and returned his second spade. South took the trick with the ace, played a spade to the queen (East pitched a heart) and cashed the club queen. Declarer discarded a diamond, and West shed the spade nine.

Now South threw a curve: He led a heart to his 10! West won with her queen and shifted to the diamond king. When that held the trick, West, misled by South’s play, continued with the diamond six. This gave declarer nine tricks via four spades, one heart, two diamonds and two clubs.

Then West discarded a diamond on the spade ace, so Lin took 10 tricks and gained 10 international match points when South’s opening bid of one diamond was passed out at the other table.
