It’s Valentine’s Day, and they’re ready for us It’s Valentine’s Day. You get anything for your wife or girlfriend yet?

Yeah, me neither.

But don’t worry – local florists and chocolatiers say they won’t let you end up in the doghouse. They’ve got extra help coming in, and extra inventory. They know how this goes: Today their shops will be flooded with people, 90 percent of them men on a deadline.

“Guys are desperate,” said Michelle Schulz, co-owner of Kar-Fre Flowers at 1126 E. State St. in Sycamore. “They just want to look good, they want to be the hero, they want to be Captain Romance when they go home.

“You can be Captain Romance with our help.”

If you stop somewhere on your way to work, or on your lunch break, or even on your way home from work – provided you get there before 5:30 p.m. or so – owners of family-owned shops said you should be OK. They know you’re busy, and they have extra people working.

At Kar-Fre, Karen and Fred Rhynders, Schulz’s parents who started the store in 1972, will be doing deliveries, Schulz said.

At the Confectionary, Sharon Smith, who started the business in 1982 with her husband, Tom, will also be working today, Betsy Hendrey said. She and her husband, Todd Hendrey, now own the store.

The staff at the Confectionary’s locations at 149 N. Second St. in DeKalb and 235 W. State St. in Sycamore are going to be hard at work all day, Hendrey said.

A best-seller at the Confectionary is chocolate-covered strawberries. They make them with fresh berries every morning, Hendrey said.

The Confectionary also has an assortment of fresh chocolates, including buttercreams, chocolate clusters, and chocolate pecan and caramel “sea monsters.” You can even put together your own heart-shaped box, she said.

Or you can just hit the store yourself – they’ve got thousands of roses along with other flowers in multiple colors. They’ve got vases, too, everything you need to build a bouquet that will keep you in her good graces.

“Put it in your schedule that morning, just come down and grab them and we’ll wrap them up,” Hansen said. “You can store them and give them to her later in the day.”

Yes, it’s going to be busy out there. Yes, the demand for roses at Valentine’s Day makes this the most expensive time to buy them, and a dozen red roses can run you $90 or more (although they’re also available for less).

Yes, you could say that you were too busy to buy her anything. But that decision could cost you.

“Guilt has got a heavy price,” Schulz said. “… We’re willing to help on Wednesday, too, it’s just really uncomfortable because those people are so desperate because they forgot, or they screwed up.

“Or their valentine said, ‘No, I don’t want anything, you don’t have to do anything,’ and they believed that.”

DeKalb City Council hears overview of downtown development plan

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Many remain optimistic that a plan to redevelop several downtown buildings, including the vacant Otto’s nightclub building, could be a transformative project for the community, although some raised concerns of its overall effect during Monday’s City Council meeting.

The $7.5 million project, dubbed Cornerstone DeKalb, calls for the city to contribute $3 million in tax increment financing funds to demolish buildings at 122, 124 and 112118 E. Lincoln Highway and 122 S. First St. to make way for a four-story apartment building with commercial space on the first floor.

John Pappas, the principal developer behind the plan, said he believes there is a market for this type of project in downtown DeKalb.

“I’ve never seen the city more pro-business than I have in the last year or year and a half,” Pappas said.

“I want to give something back, and redeveloping DeKalb would be amazing. I would like to be the guy that can make a difference at that intersection.”

The plan is to demolish the buildings on Lincoln Highway first to build the apartment building that would feature 51 fully furnished single-bedroom units with washers and dryers.

Once the building is completed, the First Street property, which holds Barb City Bagels, would be torn down to create a parking area for apartment tenants. This would allow Barb City Bagels to operate until its new location within the commercial area of the apartment building is complete.

The Otto’s building at 112-118 E. Lincoln Highway has been uninhabitable for three years after it was flooded by a burst overhead sprinkler pipe. The building has suffered substantial flood damage and has asbestos and mold issues.

The city filed a petition in October asking a judge to order the owner of the building to either remediate or demolish the property, or allow the city to level it.

In the first year after its completion, the new building could generate

more than $60,000 in sales taxes and $157,000 to $256,000 in property taxes, DeKalb Economic Development Planner Jason Michnick estimated.

Also, by having 51 residential units with rents estimated at $950 a month for tenants, Michnick said that there could be another $1.1 million to $2.3 million of annual income going toward downtown businesses.

Michael Embrey, an April 4 mayoral candidate, voiced concerns that the project could cut into the profits of other area restaurants and from local property owners who could lose tenants to one of the 51 new units.

He recommended that the council not rush into a decision on the project.

“I really don’t question the merit of the project, but the timing,” Embrey said.

First Ward Alderman Dave Jacobson doubted the transformational potential of the project. He said similar investments have been unable to

increase values of DeKalb properties over the past 30 years.

“The reality is that when you do spot developments and hope it’s going to change the overall picture of the landscape, often you don’t get the results you intended or expected,” Jacobson said. “To bill it as a transformational project is a bit premature.”

The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on the redevelopment plan at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St. DeKalb Mayor John Rey said that depending on the outcome of the hearing, the council may rule on moving the project forward during its next meeting Feb. 27.

Pappas owns the property at 124 E. Lincoln Highway and has purchase contracts on the others. He hopes to consolidate all of the buildings by early March, before the due diligence period of the contracts expires.

NIU’s arts college holds Winter Convocation

DeKALB – On Monday evening, the first Northern Illinois University College of Visual and Performing Arts Winter Convocation was held at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St. in DeKalb.

More than 100 students from the CVPA participated in the event. The CVPA has three schools: the School of Music, the School of Theatre and Dance, and the School of Art and Design.

Paul Kassel, the CVPA’s dean, said that the goal of the event was to celebrate students’ work and to generate a sense of community within the college.

“Our work is bettered by interaction with one another,” Kassel said. “It exposes the entire college to all forms of art, allowing students, staff, faculty, administrators and alumni to come together and see each others’ work.”

The convocation began at 6:30 p.m. with a reception, during which attendees mingled, ate hors d’oeuvres and viewed an art exhibit with paintings,

Daniil Krimer, a gradate student in the master of fine arts in acting program and member of the Actors Equity Association, performed a scene from “Seminar” by Theresa Rebeck during the show.

“An event like this is fun because it brings all of the different kinds of art to the forefront,” Krimer said. “It celebrates the diversity of arts in the university.”

Paula Frasz, a professor of dance at NIU, choreographed dance selections from Fats Waller’s “Ain’t Misbehavin’.” They were performed during the convocation.

“The selections are entertaining, but they also show the students’ acting ability and their range as dancers and performers,” Frasz said. “This is the first time the schools in the college are performing for each other. We’re all in different buildings on campus, and this event is a wonderful way to share what we do with others and see what everyone else does.”

Kish College board will vote on new contract for Borowicz

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com MALTA – After serving in her position for a little more than a year, Kishwaukee College President Laurie Borowicz could receive a new contract with a higher salary during Tuesday’s board of trustees meeting.

The board will consider a new four-year contract for Borowicz ending in 2021 with an initial salary of

$185,000. Her existing contract is for three years at a $175,000 salary.

For the final three years of the proposed contract, the board Laurie will determine the Borowicz president’s annual salary after setting goals with her and reviewing her performance, according to the contract.

The board will also make a con-

tribution on behalf of the president to the State Unviersities Retirement System in an amount equal to 8 percent of Borowicz’s salary and provide $10,000 a year in vehicle allowances.

Borowicz took the position after the retirement of President Tom Choice, who received a base salary of $178,228 in his last year.

The board of trustees will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the campus’ Founders Boardroom.

SYCAMORE – Thieves, possibly with a political motive, have stolen three American flags from a DeKalb County man’s home near Sycamore since President Donald Trump’s election in November.

Police are asking anyone with information about the repeated thefts in the 23000 block of Airport Road to come forward. Anyone with information about the crimes is asked to contact DeKalb County Crime Stoppers at 815-895-3272 or crimestoppers@ dekalbcounty.org.

Tipsters can remain anonymous.

Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and filing of criminal charges.

D.J. Kurtzman, a 54-year-old laborer who has lived just outside the city of Sycamore on Airport Road for nearly two decades, said he put an inverted American flag on his mailbox across the street from his home the day after the Trump was elected president. An inverted flag can be seen as a sign of distress, or a sign of disrespect. After the election, Kurtzman said he was “feeling a little distressed

Days later, Kurtzman’s inverted flag was gone. At first, he thought it might have been the wind. But when he couldn’t find it anywhere on the ground, he suspected there might be a political motive.

“I had only planned to fly [the inverted flag] for a day or two, but that just ticked me off,” he said.

He put up another flag, again upside-down, the next day. It was stolen the same day. He called police.

Kurtzman put up a third U.S. flag.

He took this flag down each night.

He stopped flying it for a while after Trump’s inauguration. He thought he’d give the new president a chance.

He put it back up in early February, about the time of the Super Bowl on Feb. 5. That flag was stolen again, sometime that day or Feb. 6, according to a news release from DeKalb County Crime Stoppers.

Kurtzman, a Democrat who has served as an election judge in DeKalb County for many years, said he’ll probably put up another flag. And if police catch the thief, he said he plans to press charges.

Lawmakers propose biotech tax credits The ASSOCIATED PRESS

DECATUR – Two Illinois lawmakers have proposed a plan to offer tax credits to biotechnology businesses in hopes of boosting agricultural jobs in central Illinois.

The legislation, introduced by Republican state Sen. Chapin Rose of Mahomet and Democratic state Sen. Andy Manar of Bunker Hill, would provide incentives to produce and sell new renewable products made from biomass and other renewable sources, the Decatur Herald & Review reported.

Manar said the state is strategically poised to lead the development of new renewable products.

“We have leading biotechnology companies, large and small, that are leading research and development efforts on these innovative products, and we have critical mass in infrastructure to produce and transport these renewables around the world,” Manar said.

Rose said there’s potential for Decatur to be at the center of a new $20 billion biotechnology industry. He said the intent is to use Decatur’s

Chicago police: Girls shot weren’t intended targets

CHICAGO – Police said the two young girls who were critically wounded in separate weekend shootings on Chicago’s South Side were not the intended victims.

Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in an email Monday that the girls, ages 11 and 12, were shot in the head Saturday night in areas with heavy gang activity by people who were aiming at someone else. Both remain in critical condition, and no arrests have been made.

He said police are reviewing city surveillance footage from the area but are also hoping either attack may have been caught on private video.

Guglielmi said the 12-year-old was shot while playing with friends and the 11-year-old was shot while sitting in a parked car.

Surgery museum plans sex-reassignment exhibit

CHICAGO – A Chicago museum chronicling the history of surgery through medical artifacts, paintings and sculptures is planning to open an exhibit later this year on sex-reassignment procedures.

Curators at the International Museum of Surgical Science said the issue has become more prominent in social, cultural and political conversations, and the museum hopes to contribute to the discussion in medical and surgical terms, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Collin Pressler, the museum’s director of exhibitions, said he hopes to “demystify” the “relatively obscure” topic.

“The museum doesn’t shy away from real and accurate depictions of surgery,” he said. “That’s how you educate.”

He hopes the exhibit will open before the end of the year as museum officials work on fundraising and designing the display.

About 700,000 people in the U.S. identify as transgender, according to a 2016 University of California study. Up to 500 sex-change operations are performed

annually in the country, according to the online Encyclopedia of Surgery.

Historic sites to offer electronic donation option

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois soon will give visitors a chance to donate online to free-admission historic sites such as Abraham Lincoln’s Tomb and the Old State Capitol.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reported that such sites have relied on suggested donations from visitors, but they haven’t had a way to pay online.

The new electronic payment system is expected to be operating in a couple of weeks.

The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency collected more than $494,000 in donations at 22 historic sites last year.

Ryan Prehn of the agency told the newspaper that Illinois is behind other nearby states in offering an electronic payment option. He said the online donations will go toward outstanding maintenance. Illinois has gone years without a capital budget for infrastructure improvements.

WASHINGTON – A federal judge on Monday refused to stop construction on the last stretch of the Dakota Access pipeline, which is progressing much faster than expected and could be operational in as little as 30 days.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg ruled after an hourlong hearing that as long as oil isn’t flowing through the pipeline, there is no imminent harm to the Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Sioux tribes, which are suing to stop the project. But he said he’d consider the arguments more thoroughly at another hearing Feb. 27.

That gives the tribes hope that they still might prevail, Cheyenne River Chairman Harold Frazier said.

The tribes requested the temporary injunction last week after Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners got federal permission to lay pipe under a Missouri River reservoir in North Dakota. That’s the last big section of the $3.8 billion pipeline, which would carry oil from North Dakota to Illinois.

In a resignation letter, Flynn said he held numerous calls with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. during the transition and gave “incomplete information” about those discussions to Pence. The vice president, apparently relying on information from Flynn, initially said the national security adviser had not discussed sanctions with the Russian envoy, although Flynn later conceded the issue may have come up.

The acting head of the state’s Department of Water Resources said he did not know if anything had gone wrong and was unaware of a 2005 report that recommended fortifying the earthen emergency spillway with concrete for just such an event. The spillway had

never been used in the dam’s nearly 50 years of operation, and it was not near capacity when it began to fail.

“I’m not sure anything went wrong,” Bill Croyle said. “This was a new, never-having-happened-before event.”

Croyle and the local sheriff sought to reassure the public that downstream communities were safe until water began spilling over the lake’s edge Sunday and a chocolate-colored torrent of water began chewing through the slope below it.

The state’s Department of Water Resources had said conditions were stable at noon and then tweeted an evacuation warning at 4:45 p.m. of a possible failure within the hour, saying “this is not a drill.”

Chaos ensued as anxious residents rushed to pack up their families and abandon several communities in Butte, Yuba and Sutter Counties. The area in the northern Central Valley is known mainly for agriculture, which is fed by dammed-up rivers that spill down from the Sierra Nevada foothills nearby.

It took some people seven hours to travel to evacuation centers that should have been an hour away, said Chico Councilman Andrew Coolidge, who visited with evacuees in packed shelters in his city.

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea insisted the evacuation had been accomplished in a “fairly timely fashion” and a “fairly orderly manner.”

DeKALB – Mike Haber, owner of the newest Verizon Wireless retailer in DeKalb, said he opened the store to offer more personalized and community-minded service to local Verizon customers.

Cell Vision at 917 S. Annie Glidden Road is the second Verizon store in DeKalb and the eighth owned by Haber, of Naperville. The store opened in October.

Haber also owns stores in Roselle, Lisle, La Grange, Rochelle and Roscoe in Illinois and Racine and Milwaukee in Wisconsin.

DeKalb has a Verizon store at 2387 Sycamore Road along with authorized retailers at Best Buy, Walmart and Target.

Harber said he has been working to bring another Verizon store to DeKalb for nearly two years.

HUNTLEY – The Huntley Outlet Center soon will be a ghost town, as most stores have set closing dates for later this month through mid-March.

The mall at Route 47 and Interstate 90 was less than half full when it was bought in April by Huntley Investment Partners LLC, which consists of California-based Craig Realty Group, Chicago’s Prime Group Inc. and Elgin’s Capital Realty and Development.

Since then, the property has fallen into disrepair, and stores have posted liquidation sale signs in windows as their closing dates near.

Wilsons Leather, Ann Taylor Factory Store, L’eggs Hanes Bali Playtex and Huntley Antique and Jewelry Mall have announced February closing dates, and Bass Factory Outlet has set a March 12 closing date.

Darna Furniture and Banana Republic Factory Store have not yet announced closing dates.

Dems shouldn’t oppose Gorsuch Democrats are picking the wrong guy – the wrong target – if they choose to go all out in opposition to Judge Neil Gorsuch – the president’s pick for an opening on the Supreme Court of the United States.

The Dems would be both smart and classy if they backed Gorsuch instead.

First, there is the politics of the matter: President Donald Trump picked a serious person, not an ideologue or a hack.

Gorsuch makes an excellent impression and is likely to make an even better one in confirmation hearings.

Five Democratic senators already have indicated they are inclined to at least give Gorsuch a vote. That’s closing in on 60 votes. The Democrats will lose this fight.

Then there is substance.

The Democrats should lose this fight.

Gorsuch is qualified, indeed, according to many who have studied his work closely, highly qualified. They say he is brilliant; a giant of legal reasoning.

Gorsuch is one of Trump’s best picks.

Meanwhile, the president has nominated dubious, marginally qualified people to head the Labor and Energy departments.

Those nominations would be more reasonable targets, politically and substantively.

Of course, Democrats feel they have a right to block Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court. Senate Republicans, in a shameless display of crass power and partisanship, declared they would not consider any person President Barack Obama nominated to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, after his untimely death a year ago.

In March, Obama put forward Judge Merrick Garland, a moderate jurist with a reputation for careful reasoning, and Republicans refused to even hold hearings, forget a vote on the floor of the Senate.

They ran out the clock – until Election Day. That was an abuse of power, and Democrats are, understandably, itching for retribution. Garland was wronged. There is no question about it.

But retribution gets us nowhere. We can’t have government by payback – one party abusing nominees and the system and then the other.

Gorsuch is the wrong man to target.

He will not be stopped and should not be.

Democrats will only be trivializing themselves by trying.

Opportunity House’s consolidation efforts Opportunity House Inc. was established in 1963 to address the problem of young adults with developmental disabilities leaving the school system with no job and few skills needed for employment.

Founded by a group of local parents, Opportunity House started out as a sheltered workshop employing six individuals assembling and packaging parts for local industries.

Over the years, we’ve grown to provide a wide range of programs and services that meet the employment, housing and social needs of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and have become one of the largest nonprofits in DeKalb County. With a mission “To help individuals with developmental disabilities work, live in homes of their choice and enjoy community life”, Opportunity House helps those we serve to lead happy, healthy and productive lives.

COMMUNITY CHALLENGES

State funding of programs for developmentally disabled adults has declined over the past several years.

Yet the demand for services for area students leaving special education programs and for people with autism has increased. To meet the demand for high-quality programs that meet community needs, Opportunity House must continually look for ways to operate as efficiently and effectively as possible.

To reduce the cost of delivering services and to enhance coordination

California St., Sycamore, consolidate all program and administrative functions into one building, then sell the building at 202 Lucas St. Consolidating operations at one location will result in significant savings in occupancy costs and address a number of strategic priorities, including: • Enhanced program integration, communication and flexibility. Clients will be able to move through the facility taking part in any one of the three day-program components. Staff can be more easily shared across programs, reducing the need for additional staff.

• Improved programming for people with autism. Additional space to work in small groups or one-on-one and office space for the staff needed for program expansion.

• Additional space for growth and expansion of future programs.

PROJECT COSTS

The Opportunity House board of directors approved the $1.8 million project last spring and launched a capital campaign to cover all of the costs.

Opportunity House does not have any debt, and because of inconsisten-

cy of state payments, proper reserves must be maintained. To date the campaign has generated $1.2 million in cash donations or pledges. Project construction is underway and is targeted for completion by June.

CAMPAIGN MATCH

To help achieve the remaining balance of the $1.8 million target, the Douglas C. and Lynn Roberts Family Foundation will provide a 50-cent match for each dollar pledged to help Opportunity House raise the remaining $600,000.

The target date to achieve the match is July 1. Payments toward a pledge can be made over a three-year period. We are grateful to the Roberts Foundation and all of our other very generous donors to this campaign, as well as our annual Opportunity House donors.

Democracy or autocracy?

In pursuit of the constitutional responsibilities required of U.S. senators, Elizabeth Warren, a democratically elected representative of the people of Massachusetts, was deprived of the right to speak on behalf of the people of her state last week by Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, democratically elected majority leader in the Senate.

His defense of his behavior is that “she was warned.” Does he mean to imply that any wrong, illegal or despicable behavior should be condoned if a “warning” has been issued? Should the rest of us expect to be excused for unacceptable or illegal behavior because we issued a “warning”?

Is this an isolated incident, or is this a view of the way in which the Congress will conduct its business this session?

The right of free speech and dissent are core values of our democratic system of government. Failure to be guided by these principles by leaders in Congress will be a disaster for our way of life.

Amid all the hurly-burly of President Donald Trump’s first weeks in office, let’s try to put the changes he’s making and the feathers he’s ruffling in a longer, 20-year perspective.

Start off with his trademark issue – one that clearly helped him win the 64 crucial electoral votes of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin: Trade.

Twenty years ago, Bill Clinton’s administration was busy negotiating with China for normal trade relations.

China’s economy was growing rapidly.

Its manufactures were inexpensive.

And American firms looked with relish on a market of 1 billion customers with fast-growing incomes.

Clinton’s approach, supported by leading Republicans, was based on a lesson that every college student learns in Economics 101, whether taught by a Keynesian or a Milton Friedman fan.

Free trade benefits both sides, with lower prices and increased economic growth.

Clinton hustled to push “permanent normal trade relations” with China through Congress in the election year of 2000. There was broad support in the Senate, and the House passed an amendment establishing a commission to monitor China’s human rights practices. It passed by a 237-197 margin, with 164 Republicans and 73 Democrats voting yes.

Miller led all scorers with 18 points. Panthers senior Zakiya Newsome added 10 points, four rebounds and a pair of steals.

HOFFMAN ESTATES – The DeKalb girls basketball team’s season came to a close as the No. 18-seeded Barbs lost to No. 14-seeded Glenbard North, 47-21, in a Class 4A Conant Regional play-in game Monday night.

The youthful Barbs (5-24) struggled to stop the outside shooting of Glenbard North (13-15). Panthers junior guard Leah Miller connected four times from beyond the arc and finished with 18 points to lead the charge for Glenbard North.

Barbs coach Elliot Whitefield said that by next year, he hopes his girls won’t be in another play-in game.

“I’ve never coached in one of these games before,” Whitefield said.

“Hopefully, next season we will take that next step and we’ll be playing the winner of one of these games.”

Barbs captain Danielle Stiles and Hanna Hickey are the only outgoing seniors from this season’s squad.

Both players had words of advice for their teammates who will be returning next season.

“Hold onto every moment,” Stiles said. “You never know when it will be your last game, so make the most of everything.”

Hickey added, “Keep playing hard. The skills will come with time, but if we keep working as hard as you can, we’ll be all right.”

Whitefield said he was happy with his team’s effort throughout a turbulent season. He touched on his team’s work ethic, as well as the players who he expects to improve next season.

“They continued to play hard,” he said. “You can teach skills and concepts, but if you don’t have those players who will compete and play hard, those are your underachievers.

I like how hard our girls work. They don’t quit. I know that Jacki Rapp is going to continue to work hard in the offseason. I’m looking for Ashley Nelson to make a jump as she transitions from freshman to sophomore year. As the year went on, she got better and better. Haley Westberg does a lot of good things, as well. She just needs to work on her skills.”

Gonzaga is No. 1 for the third straight week in The Associated Press college basketball poll.

The Zags (26-0), the lone unbeaten team in Division I, received 60 firstplace votes from the 65-member national media panel Monday.

Villanova (24-2), which received the other five first-place votes, and Kansas held second and third, while Baylor moved from sixth to fourth.

The top four teams match those announced Saturday as the preliminary No. 1 seeds by the NCAA tournament selection committee, although its or-

der was Villanova, Kansas, Baylor and Gonzaga.

Arizona jumped from ninth to fifth and was followed by fellow Pac12 members UCLA and Oregon, while Louisville, West Virginia and North Carolina round out the top 10.

Notre Dame returns to the poll at No. 25 after being out for one week. The Fighting Irish replace Xavier.

Wisconsin dropped from seventh to 11th and was followed by Duke, Kentucky, Virginia, Florida, Purdue, Florida State, Cincinnati, SMU and Creighton.

The last five ranked teams were South Carolina, Saint Mary’s, Maryland, Butler and Notre Dame.

It was another week of losses by ranked teams, with 12 of the Top 25 losing last week.

The week’s biggest jump and fall came from the same game. SMU moved from 25th to No. 19, and Cincinnati dropped from 11th to No. 18 after the Mustangs ended the Bearcats’ 15-game winning streak Sunday. Duke, which

beat North Carolina and Clemson last week, also moved up six places, from 18th to No. 12.

Notre Dame, which was ranked for nine weeks before dropping out last week, returns to the poll after beating Florida State on Saturday.

Xavier, which has been beset by injuries, dropped out from 24th after losing to Villanova. The Musketeers were ranked seventh in the preseason poll and returned last week after being out of one poll.

The Atlantic Coast Conference leads the way with six ranked teams while the Big East, Big 12, Pac-12, Big Ten and Southeastern Conference all have three.

Kansas has two games against ranked teams this week, beating West Virginia, 84-80, in overtime Monday, and Saturday at Baylor.

Other double-ranked games are Duke at Virginia on Wednesday, Virginia at North Carolina on Saturday and Maryland at Wisconsin on Sunday.

Cubs pushing titles; Sox pushing hope

MESA, Ariz. – The White Sox are selling hope.

The Cubs have gotten out of the hope business. They’re selling anything else that moves, however, including official World Series champions bats, balls, key chains, caps, T-shirts, paperweights, playing cards, pen sets and, for all we know, romantic hot-oil massages. If you can think of it, the team already has designed, produced and price-tagged it.

To the victor go the spoils.

And to the Sox goes public patience. That might be more stunning than their decision to go through a rebuild. Maybe they should have tried this years ago. Think of all the fan and media beatdowns they would have avoided.

The Cubs will be the story of spring training. They’re the Little Engine That Finally Did after 107 years of Couldn’t. They don’t have to sell ‘‘next year” anymore. ‘‘Next year” was last year. They’re selling timeshares this year. They’re selling the idea of championships, plural. Two?

VIEWS Rick Morrissey Three? Four? Who is this, LeBron James?

Nothing anybody does this spring can match the Cubs’ story. How will they handle success? What can they do for an encore? Is it being greedy to think they might win back-to-back titles after going a century-plus without one? Why are we asking so many questions about a team whose last sentence was an exclamation point?

Now that’s a good question. The Cubs don’t have many issues or holes.

Sure, everybody is wondering what Jason Heyward’s new swing looks like. But even if it looks like an old man vacuuming a living room, no one will care as long as he hits better than .230, his average last season.

But it’s worth remembering the Cubs won a World Series without Heyward putting bat on ball much.

They were so stacked with talent that they could imply, with a straight face, that his stirring rain-delay speech in Game 7 of the World Series was worth his $21.7 million salary last season.

Not much has changed for the Cubs. Closer Aroldis Chapman has moved back in with the Yankees, so the North Siders traded for Wade Davis to handle the ninth inning.

Davis is not Chapman, but there’s enough ability up and down the roster that drop-offs in talent can be made up elsewhere. Oh, and a healthy Kyle Schwarber could be like a valuable free-agent signing.

The Cubs are the rock-star attraction Michael Jordan’s Bulls used to be. Wherever Jake Arrieta, Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Addison Russell & Co. went last season, crowds followed them. It’s why the team’s spring-training facility is expected to be packed with Cubs fans for the next month and a half. The only people happier than long-suffering followers of this team are Mesa Chamber of Commerce

employees.

The Cubs indeed can repeat. They were the favorites the moment Rizzo caught Bryant’s throw from third base in the 10th inning of Game 7.

It’s more likely they won’t repeat than they will, given baseball history and the capriciousness of the sport.

But if it was weird to see the Cubs celebrating on the field in Cleveland last season, one would be foolish to dismiss the possibility of weird times two.

The Sox have traded ace Chris Sale, one of the best pitchers in the majors, and there’s a good chance we’re going to see ugly times two, three or four. Is the Sox’s new approach another ruse to string along fans, only this time for three to five years of promise and commitment? How bad is this going to be while the rebuild grinds along?

Who the heck are they going to put on the field? Why are we asking so many questions about a team that figures to be so unremarkable?

“I don’t know if it’s [my job] to lose,” he said. “I look at it as it’s going to be competition. There’s a lot of good pitchers here. Every camp I’ve ever been in, you’re always competing with somebody.

And I enjoy that. It’s a challenge. But I think that’s how it should be, because it gets the best out of players.”

When Anderson, a veteran, career starter, was signed two weeks ago for $3.5 million, Montgomery’s starting status might have taken a hit, assuming good health for Anderson and the four returning rotation guys.

But Montgomery shrugs off that possibility and looks more at the big picture

– the one he hopes will look a lot like that instant-classic celebration photo in about 8½ months.

“He can definitely help us,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery talked more about the newfound knowledge of how to win a championship.

“Hard work. You’ve just got to be persistent, really,” he said. “That’s the mindset I feel like a lot of us need to keep, because you don’t want to get complacent.

I mean, yeah, it’s great to win a World Series, but this is a new year, a new challenge. Last year’s great, but that’s last year. It’s a new year.”

MESA, Ariz. – Madison Bumgarner, Jack Morris, Bob Gibson, Rollie Fingers and Mike Montgomery.

It’s obvious what they all have in common, right?

They’re among the 15 pitchers in the past 50 years to throw the final pitch in a Game 7 to clinch a World Series championship.

“It’s only two pitches, but I’ve watched it a few times,” said Montgomery, who can be seen in the middle of the instant-classic Cubs’ celebration photo from that Nov. 2 victory in Cleveland “It was just incredible,” he said, “even now to see pictures, me just with my arm raised in the middle of the whole pile, it’s like, ‘Man, this really just happened.’ It just goes to show you, you never know, because I wouldn’t have imagined winning a World Series this time last year, let alone being kind of in the middle of it there at the end.”

Last spring, Montgomery was with the Mariners, trying to make a roster after a 16-start big-league debut the year before.

By season’s end, the left-hander was in the Cubs’ revamped bullpen.

And this spring he’s in what might be the most significant position battle for the defending World Series champs.

Who replaces Dexter Fowler as the leadoff man might be the sexiest question entering camp, but there’s little suspense surrounding which position players will get playing time or whether the lineup will be able to score runs.

The pitching? If there’s any suspense, that’s where you’ll find it.

Montgomery and recently signed lefty Brett Anderson are the top candidates for Jason Hammel’s vacated rotation spot – both of whom could be especially significant for an otherwise loaded team still crossing its fingers over starting pitching depth.

“I think I can play a big part [of the repeat effort],” Montgomery said Monday after a workout the day before pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to camp (first formal workouts are Wednesday).

“I’ve always been a starter, and I think last year was a situation where the need was in the bullpen, both with Seattle and with the Cubs early on,” he said. “Then I filled the role of being a starter for short periods of time, so I’ve talked to them about [that versatility].”

Montgomery, 27, made five starts for the Cubs last summer, recording a 3.33 ERA without a save. Team officials have talked about him prominently in their starting rotation plans throughout the winter.

Trade talk swirling with rebuild Renteria: ‘They have a job to do’

GLENDALE, Ariz. – There will be no getting around swirling trade rumors when White Sox pitchers and catchers report to spring training Tuesday.

Left-hander Jose Quintana has been a hot topic ever since the Sox dealt Chris Sale and Adam Eaton. David Robertson also has value as a proven closer and set-up man and is at or near the contending Washington Nationals’ priority list. Some believe Robertson could go this week, if the two sides come to an agreement on prospects going to the Sox in return and the amount of salary the Nationals are willing to pay. Robertson has $11 million and $12 million on the last two years of his four-year deal, and the Sox historically are not big on eating contract dollars.

“Obviously, it’s something that is swirling, but for the most part, we all know that they come to the ballpark preparing for the upcoming season,” manager Rick Renteria said Monday.

“It would be foolish for me to say they probably don’t have it in the back of their mind. It’s probably there, but it shouldn’t be something that encompasses their every waking moment.

They still have a job to do. They have to come here and prepare to get ready for the upcoming season.”

That is what pitchers and catchers will begin doing in earnest Tuesday, taking physicals starting at 6 a.m. before taking the field for their first organized work. The Sox are in rebuild mode, and it seems only a matter of when, not if, some of their most valuable assets will move on.

“If there are any obstacles or annoyances that occur, we will do the best we can to kind of minimize those,” Rent-

eria said. “For the most part, they are professionals. They know what they have to do. Their day-to-day operations are what they have to do to prepare for the upcoming season, so I think we will try to focus on that.”

This is Renteria’s first year back in charge after managing the Cubs for two seasons, sitting one out and serving as 2016 manager Robin Ventura’s bench coach. He steps in with less pressure to win than Ventura had in most of his five seasons. In rebuild mode, and with Sale and Eaton already gone, the theme

is the future and not the present.

“The expectation outside can be what it’s going to be,” Renteria said.

“We still have to have high expectations for ourselves.”

When Robertson signed for $46 million over four years in December 2014, the Sox also signed Melky Cabrera to a three-year, $42 million deal and traded Marcus Semien and three other prospects to the Athletics for one year of Jeff Samardzija. The built-to-win buzz in camp that year lost momentum in the first weeks of the season.

Patchwork signings, big and small, haven’t worked for an organization with a weak farm system, prompting general manager Rick Hahn and Co. to begin the rebuild phase. Already, the Sox have five top 100 prospects in their systems with more trades to come.

And likely more losses, although the players who are here no doubt will say in the coming days that they expect to win.

“Everyone is going to have high expectations for themselves in that clubhouse,” Renteria said. “It’s not going to change for me. Most people will say if you lay high expectations and they don’t rise to the occasion, you’re setting them up for defeat. I don’t agree with that. I think you set high expectations, you allow them to go through the process and you figure out what we failed at in order to get the job done.

That’s a part of learning how to win also.”

GLENDALE, Ariz. – First-year White Sox manager Rick Renteria will be a “tough love” kind of leader.

On the outside, his gentle, upbeat demeanor says “nice guy.”

Behind that lies a no-nonsense longtime baseball guy who wants things done his way. He wants the game played a certain way under his watch, and the task of making that happen begins this week with veterans and prospects alike.

“There are going to be times where my guys don’t like me very much, and that’s OK; there are going to be times when I don’t like them very much,” Renteria said Monday. “But I’m always going to love them.”

As most parents can relate to.

“A priest told me, ‘Kids aren’t always going to love your parents, and parents are not always going to love your kids.’ But it’s the same thing, same approach.”

Renteria comes back to managing with a second chance after unceremoniously getting let go by the Cubs, while still under contract, when Joe Maddon was hired.

“The first time around, I think it went fast for him,” a veteran scout said. “They asked him to baby-sit those kids instead of being a manager and he got clipped. But he knew what he was doing, and, hopefully, he’s seen things and it has slowed down for him a little

bit. And the American League game doesn’t come at you as fast. He may have a shot at it.”

“Every year you learn something new,” Renteria said.

“The reality is, I have a line that I have to toe in leading these guys in a particular direction. So that is on me now, that is my law.”

Early birds: Charlie Tilson and Matt Davidson were among the early position player arrivals. Tilson, who suffered a season-ending hamstring injury his first day in uniform after arriving from the Cardinals for Zach Duke last season, stands a good chance to be the Opening Day center fielder.

Tilson is ranked as the Sox’s No. 11 prospect by MLB.com.

Third baseman Todd Frazier is expected to arrive soon. The first full squad workout is Saturday.

Playing for pay: Melky Cabrera ($15 million) is earning the Sox’s highest salary in 2017. James Shields at $21 million is the highest-paid Sox, although the Padres are paying $11 million of that. The Sox’s other top salaries: David Robertson, $12 million; Frazier, $12 million; Jose Abreu, $10.825 million; Jose Quintana, $7 million; Derek Holland, $6 million; Miguel Gonzalez, $5.9 million; Brett Lawrie, $3.5 million, Avisail Garcia, $3 million.

Cabrera, Frazier, Holland, Gonzalez and Lawrie are eligible for free agency after the season.

Camp Capra: Nick Capra is coordinating camp again this year. Capra, who took over for former bench coach Mark Parent in that capacity last year, is taking over as third base coach after serving as the organization’s director of player development.

The hope is that some of the players they received in the Sale and Adam Eaton trades, along with whomever they get in a potential trade for Jose Quintana, will blossom into stars, the way the Cubs’ young players did during their rebuild.

Tentatively, however, it looks good.

The Sox have six players each in Baseball America’s and MLB.com’s top-100 prospects lists. That includes infielder Yoan Moncada, whom Baseball America ranks No. 1; right-hander Lucas

Giolito, who is ranked No. 3; and right-hander Michael Kopech, who is ranked No. 30 and whose fastball has been ticketed going 105 mph.

We care about the Sox because they’re going to lose a lot of games in the name of maybe, possibly, conceivably winning a lot of games somewhere down the line.

We care about the Cubs because they’re going to win a ton of games this season and beyond.

It’s enough, although in very different ways.

like most of the younger generation of the NHL, didn’t sound opposed to the idea – wasn’t so sure it would make that much of a difference.

After all, a regulation win over a division opponent would be a six-point swing.

“The other side of it, which nobody really talks about, is if you have three points, you can make up a lot of ground,” Bowman said. “They always talk about how it’s going to separate the teams, but you can make up ground quicker. If you win seven games in a row in regulation, that’s a lot better than seven games in a row in overtime. I think it would give teams a hope that you could get hot.

There would be more separation, but there also would be hope. Right now, it’s just so hard to make up ground on anybody because every night, you can win five in a row and really not move up because other teams are getting points when they’re losing.”

As for the effect it would have on NHL history, the record book has long been warped by the elimination of ties, and by expanding the season from 76 to 84 games, then back to 82.

More separation in the standings,

more chance for wild swings in playoff races, and more excitement in third periods of close games. It all seems like a no-brainer. But the league has shown little interest in making such a change, because it obviously is good for business to have so many teams mathematically alive this late in the season, and it obviously is good for coaches’ job stability to stay in the hunt during a mediocre season.

But it’s a faux parity, not a genuine one.

“When it got brought up a few years ago, I initially wasn’t a fan,” DeBoer said. “But I’m becoming more and more a fan of it. I really like the parity that the two-point system has, where nobody’s really out of it. And having coached some teams that legitimately should have been out of it, it was nice to be able to walk in your room and say, ‘Hey, we’re only three or four points out,’ when really, you’ve got six teams to climb over. I like that part of it. But on the flip side, I think there should be a bigger reward for winning and winning in regulation, because, typically, the best teams can do that. And they should be rewarded for that.”

There’s a moment in nearly every third period of every close game, usually about halfway through but sometimes even earlier, when frantic suddenly becomes tedious, when aggression yields to passivity, when high-octane becomes low-key.

Breakouts are slower. Defense is tighter. Point-men stop pinching.

High-skill forwards make only lowrisk passes. Both teams are playing for overtime, and it’s a strategy that renders too many third periods dull when they should be dramatic.

“Maybe not early in the third, but definitely as the game wears on and you get in the last 10 minutes of the third, it’s impossible not to think that, ‘Hey, we’ll take the point and take our chances in overtime,’ ” San Jose Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said. “I think everybody does that.”

The so-called “loser point” – the standings point given to teams that lose in overtime or shootouts, has created unprecedented parity in the league. Barely two weeks before the March 1 trade deadline, all 16 Eastern Conference teams are either in a playoff spot or within seven points of one.

And 12 of the 14 Western Conference teams were in, or within six points.

It’s created such a logjam in the standings that general managers can’t even make trades, because of the 30 teams in the NHL, only the Arizona Coyotes and Colorado Avalanche are truly sellers at this point.

Every point is so valuable, that in a close game, few teams are willing to risk getting none in order to chase two in regulation. That especially is true in interconference games, when the opponent picking up a point doesn’t do any harm.

Even Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville, whose go-to catch-phrase is, “Nobody likes winning more than me,” does it. He doesn’t call it “playing for overtime,” but calls it “being smart.” He insisted the Hawks don’t change their style of play based on period or conference alignment, but the cautious third-period performances speak for themselves.

“With our team, sometimes you find yourself in those last 10 to 15 minutes of games in the third period, you’re tied or you’re down a goal or you’re Joel up a goal, I think you Quenneville want to make sure you’re getting one point in those games, right?” Hawks winger Patrick Kane said. “Then see what happens in overtime. We have some guys that can perform well in overtime or a shootout, whatever it may be.”

The solution – one that has been bandied about in hockey circles for years – is to go to the international point system, which gives out three points for a regulation win, two for an overtime or shootout win, one for an overtime or shootout loss, and none for a regulation loss. The idea is to incentivize winning in regulation – to make it worthwhile to play a more entertaining, riskier brand of hockey in the third period.

In a three-point system, the Hawks would be 11 points behind the Wild (111 to 100), with Nashville 14 points behind the Hawks and St. Louis one more point out. Teams such as Winnipeg and Dallas (74 points each) would be much farther out of the playoff picture, and the trade market likely would be open for business with more spread-out standings. But Hawks general manager Stan Bowman – who,

Still in playoff position in mediocre East

It’s not because his teammates are healthy going into this weekend’s All-Star break.

Jimmy Butler (right heel contusion) gutted his way through being a partial participant in Monday’s practice, Niko Mirotic (back spasms) sat out, while Dwyane Wade (right wrist) and Paul Zipser (left ankle) were away from the facility getting MRIs. It’s not because the Bulls are coming together at the right time. They finished off the six-game road trip losing three straight, including a blowout loss to former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau.

It’s not even because there’s help on the way. Coach Fred Hoiberg was asked about the trade talk surrounding the Bulls, and downplayed any real conversations going on.

“I haven’t talked much about that,” Hoiberg said. “All 30 teams are calling each other. I’m sure most of them are lying to each other until those last couple days before the deadline, which is the 23rd.’’

Asked if he sensed there would be changes, Hoiberg then said, “None that I’m aware of.”

something Gibson said still can be embraced.

“The thing is we still got a chance to land in a good spot,” Gibson said. “We’re still a playoff team.”

Maybe one with little staying power, but Gibson’s hope is that with Wade and Butler, as well as a track record of playing well against the likes of Cleveland and Toronto the past two seasons, if this team can get back to basics this week, momentum can go a long way.

“Just gotta do the small

things, get back to ground zero, figure things out,” Gibson said. “Be ready man, nobody is going to feel sorry for you.

It’s going to take everybody.

Just round up the cattle and be ready to move out again.”

First, it’s about getting all the cattle back.

That might not be the case

by Tuesday, when the Raptors come to town. Hoiberg, however, said that shouldn’t matter.

“We had four guys out [Sunday], but it gave guys opportunities to play,” Hoiberg said. “Those guys have been waiting for those. There’s no excuse. Those guys are out here practicing. They’re NBA players. You have to go fight and give yourself a chance. We didn’t do that against Minnesota. These guys are itching for their opportunity. Now it’s about performing, doing things the right way, building the right habits for a lot of guys who haven’t had a lot of playing time.

“But that’s what it’s all

about, getting your name called and taking advantage of your opportunities.”

Especially when your name also was called in the first round of draft night, and the Bulls organization hyped up that selection. That means youngsters such as Bobby Portis, Doug McDermott and Denzel Valentine – all recent Bulls first-round selections – need to let the organization know how right or wrong they’ve been lately.

What wasn’t still isn’t up for debate is the urgency in which this year’s Bulls team needs to start playing with.

After welcoming Toronto and Boston this week, when they come out of the break, there will be only 25 games left to jockey for playoff position.

“That’s the message to the guys: We’re fully capable of playing good basketball,” Hoiberg said.

The good thing about the Eastern Conference is average basketball still can be enough.

Sandusky’s son Jeffrey arrested on child sex charges

One of Jerry Sandusky’s sons was charged Monday with sex crimes involving two girls, more than five years after the former Penn State assistant coach was himself first arrested on child molestation charges.

Jeffrey S. Sandusky, 41, was charged by state police and arraigned by a district judge in Bellefonte on 14 counts. He was jailed on $200,000 bail.

Sandusky was a stalwart supporter of his father and accompanied his mother, Dottie, to many of his court proceedings.

Cavs trade ‘Birdman’ Andersen to Hornets, who release him

Spend less time in front of screen Dear Doctor: Our neighbor’s kids, who don’t have access to computers, video games or other technology, spend a lot of time playing together outdoors. How can we wean our own kids from their screens without causing a family rebellion?

Dear Reader: You’re facing a real challenge that has crept up on parents in the last decade or so. Once the argument was simply about getting kids to turn off the TV. Today, though, an array of devices effortlessly capture our children’s – and let’s be honest, our own – time and attention.

When the Kaiser Family Foundation conducted a study about screen time six years ago, the results were eye-opening.

Its research showed children between the ages of 8 and 18 spend more than 7½ hours each day in front of screens of one kind or another. And that didn’t include the use of a computer for homework.

Why is this a problem? Children who spend that much time immobilized in front of a screen, whether it’s the TV, a computer, smartphone or video game console, are at significantly greater risk of obesity. There is evidence kids who play a lot of video games are more likely to display aggressive behavior. Sleep problems due to sustained screen use are common. And a preference for the immersive world of a tech device over the companionship of siblings or friends can lead to antisocial behavior.

So how do you win the battle for your kids’ attention? The biggest challenge may be that, first, you need to set a good example. How many times have you driven by a playground and seen parents completely absorbed in their smartphones? If the tug of the screen is difficult for an adult to resist, imagine its effect on young and malleable minds.

Begin by setting strict guidelines for yourself and (here’s the hard part) following them. Once you’ve got your own screen time

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no media use for children younger than 18 to 24 months old. One hour a day of high-quality programming is deemed to be OK for children 2 to 5 years old. Although the academy no longer makes a specific recommendation regarding children 6 and older, two hours per day of screen time is a reasonable goal.

• For best results, start with a family discussion. Tell your children what you’re doing and why. Explain that they will sleep better, have more energy and will have time for other activities.

• Create screen time limits and take a few weeks to ease into them. Tapering off will allow your family to work together toward a common goal.

• Make a weekly chart to log screen time and go over the results as a family.

• Create screen-free bedrooms for everyone in the family. (Yes, adults too.)

• Meals should be screen-free, including smartphones and TVs. • Plan alternate activities, like taking a family hike or bike ride, baking cookies together or having a game night.

• Resist the urge to use screen time as either a reward or punishment.

Although it may be rough going at first, by helping your kids to look away from their screens, you’re giving them a real and loving gift.

That contract would surely have gone down one.

When East passed, Lin Rongqiang (South) advanced with two diamonds.

After three rounds of hearts, East shifted to the diamond three. Declarer took West’s queen with dummy’s ace, played a spade to his king and ran the diamond nine. East took his two trump tricks and exited with a heart, which squeezed West. When she discarded a spade, South had four spades, two diamonds and two clubs.

The killing defense at trick four was East’s singleton spade. The curious may work it out -- my word limit has been reached.
