Beyonce sang on top of a long table, even leaning back on a chair while singing “Love Drought.” She later sang “Sandcastles” while sitting down in a chair that tilted alarmingly backward, hitting high notes. She earned a loud applause from the audience, including daughter Blue Ivy and husband Jay Z. Beyonce, who walked into the show with nine nominations, won two: best music video (“Formation”) and urban contemporary album (“Lemonade”).

David Bowie, who died last year from cancer, won all five awards he was nominated for.

“Blackstar,” his final album released days after he died, won best alternative music album and engineered album, nonclassical (Bowie is listed as one of the engineers on “Blackstar.”) In the latter category, he beat out Prince, who also died last year. The title track won best rock song and rock performance.

Chance the Rapper won the first award in the live telecast for best new artist. He also won best rap album – the first streaming-only album to do so – and bested Drake and Kanye West.

LOS ANGELES – Although Adele flubbed during her live performance at the Grammys, she walked away the belle of the ball: She took home five awards Sunday night, including album, record and song of the year.

She beat Beyonce in the top three categories with her comeback album “25,” and repeated her accomplishments from 2012, when the British star also won album, song and record of the year at the Grammys. She’s the first artist in Grammy history to sweep the top three categories twice, and now has a total of 15 Grammys.

She used her speech to honor Beyonce and her groundbreaking “Lemonade” album, which also was nominated.

“The way you make my friends feel, the way you make my black friends feel is empowering,” Adele said at the Staples Center in Los Angeles when accepting album of the year.

“I adore you. You move my soul everyday ... I adore you and I want you to be my mommy,” Adele said to a very pregnant Beyonce just minutes before picking up song of the year for “Hello.”

The night for Adele wasn’t all good though: The singer, who had trouble with her live performance at last year’s Grammys, asked to restart her tribute to George Michael, telling the audience: “I can’t mess this up for him.” She stopped and used an expletive after singing some of a new arrangement of Michael’s “Fastlove,” as videos and photos of Michael played in the background. She re-sang the song and earned applause and support from the crowd, though Adele was teary eyed.

Michael died on Christmas Day. At last year’s show, the British singer had a hiccup after a microphone inside a piano fell onto the instrument’s strings.

A number of other icons were honored, including Prince: Bruno Mars – rocking a glittery, Prince-like purple blazer, worked the guitar like a pro while singing the icon’s “Let’s Go Crazy.”

The Time – who worked closely with the Prince – brought the audience to its feet with funky performances of “Jungle Love” and “The Bird.”

“Make some noise for Prince y’all,” Mars yelled. Mars also was a winner Sunday – he won for his producing work on Adele’s album.

Adele’s other wins included best pop vocal album and pop solo performance.

Kids collaborate at Students Involved with Technology Conference

news@daily-chronicle.com Luke Stubblefield, 9, was nervous about giving a presentation in front of his peers about how to play the computer game he and his dad created.

But the Lincoln Elementary School third-grader’s “Whack-a-Packer” game was a huge hit among his audience Saturday at the Students Involved with Technology Conference at DeKalb High School.

“I think it’s interesting to do a Makey Makey game, and show everyone how electricity works. I think it went well,” he said. “My dad programmed a ‘whack-a-mole’ game, and then we decided to put pictures of the Packers in the game. We thought it would be funny to whack their heads.”

Luke was one of about 300 children from across Northern Illinois in grades three through 12 who attended the conference, where the students gave presentations about several topics related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics, such as virtual reality, coding, robotics and more. Students attended six sessions throughout the day.

This is the 10th year the conference has been in DeKalb, which is one of only five sites across the state.

The conference began in 2000 in Bloomington-Normal and is sponsored

by State Farm and Illini Cloud, a data management initiative for school districts.

The student presenters are sponsored by an adult, usually a parent or teacher, who works with them on their project and accompanies them to the conference. James Stubblefield, Luke’s father, said he was extremely proud of his son for presenting.

“He really wanted to do this. He loves working with the Makey Makey, which is a circuit board that hooks up to a computer so you can create games,” James Stubblefield said. “He loves playing around with this at home.

I programmed the game, but he figured out what to use to control it.”

Denise Flemming, coordinator for the conference, said it’s a good opportunity for kids to learn about technology from each other and share their knowledge.

“The students are very excited about what they’re sharing,” she said.

There are jobs in all the STEM fields, and the earlier they can have experiences with STEM, the more positive their futures will be.”

Navaeh Slayton, 10, was having fun making slime during one of the afternoon sessions. The Malta Elementary School fifth-grader said she was excited about attending the conference for the first time.

“I thought this was a really interesting idea,” she said. “I like science.

There’s just something about it that’s really fun. I like learning about the body.”

Madyson Reid, 10, was making slime next to Navaeh, and while she was having fun, Madyson’s favorite part of the day was doing a presentation about “Ollie,” a robot that is controlled by a tablet computer.

“I learned about ‘Ollie’ from my teacher, and I really liked playing with it,” said Madyson, a fifth-grader at Lin-

coln Elementary School in DeKalb.

“Science is one of my favorite subjects because it’s fun to make stuff.”

Erik Castro, 12, has been coming to the conference for five years, and he was having fun controlling one of the “Ollie” robots.

“I like to see all the different inventions and learn more about technology.

I like to enjoy the technology with other people,” the Huntley Middle School sixth-grader said.

Josh Melms, 12, presented Sphero robots, showing students how to code the small, round bots. This is the second time the Huntley Middle School sixth-grader has presented at the conference.

“There’s a lot you can change on the Spheros, like the color and speed,” he said. “I like teaching kids how to use these because it opens up a coding world for them. Coding is fun to do and helps them learn science.”

Anahi, a sophomore at DeKalb High School, demonstrated how to play musical notes on the guitar using technology.

“I’ve been playing guitar for six years, and I wanted kids to experience the arts,” she said. “I was nervous at first, but the kids really like the music.

I had fun because the kids are so excited about technology.”

Ryan Villalobos, 9, was most excited about the virtual reality session. This was his first time coming to the conference, and he said he’ll be back next year.

“With the virtual reality, it seemed like you were really in a game. The Minecraft session was fun, too,” the Malta Elementary School fourth-grader said.

“This gives kids a chance to do things you’ve never done before and to learn a lot about technology.”

news@daily-chronicle.com For Ariel Ries, owner of Fargo Skateboarding in DeKalb, riding a skateboard isn’t just a hobby – it’s a way of life.

Ries, 32, looks to share her love of the sport by hosting beginner skateboard lessons every Saturday morning at Fargo Skateboarding’s indoor skate park.

“This is a good way to get kids interested in skateboarding,” she said. “Our goal is to be a welcoming and encouraging environment. It’s really growing in popularity. Each week we have between 15 and 30 people, and it’s super fun.

“Skateboarding is amazing in every way, and it’s something you do for a lifetime. I want to spread that joy throughout the community.”

Eowyn Feldacker, 6, comes to Fargo Skateboarding every Saturday. The kindergartener at Littlejohn Elementary School in DeKalb said she’s getting pretty good at it.

“I really like skateboarding. I’m still learning, but I don’t need any help anymore,” she said.

Her mother, Valerie Garver, said she thinks skateboarding is building more confidence in her daughter.

“She just loves it, and it’s good because you have to take calculated risks to do it well,” Garver said. “She falls, but that’s part of it. I’ve never seen her so passionate about anything.”

Aja Aspinwall, 9, has been skateboarding for a few months, and she got interested in it because her father skateboards.

“I think it’s really cool, and I like that there’s no competition. You can learn to do it your own way,” the fourth-grader at Founders Elementary School in DeKalb said. “It’s really fun because when you go fast, it just feels amazing.”

Cayden Harbecke, 11, began skateboarding when he was 5 years old, and he still loves to come to the Saturday morning lesson.

can ride around and try new things.

Skateboarding is hard, but I’m getting better,” the Malta Elementary School fifth-grader said.

His mother, Chris Harbecke, said she’s happy to bring her son because she wants him to be active and to learn something new.

“He’s not sitting in front of a TV, and this gives kids a sense of failing and getting back up,” she said. “They fall a lot, but they keep going. It’s also good for him to meet kids who share the same interests. They’re very accepting here, whether you’re a beginner or an advanced skater.”

Ian Libby, 6, of DeKalb fell off his board and hurt his elbow. But after a few tears and about five minutes, he was ready to get back on and skate.

“Even when you get hurt, you still want to get back up and try again,” the

kindergartener at Founders Elementary School said. “I like skateboarding and like going down the ramps and doing cool tricks.”

Ries is very focused on safety, and the facility requires all riders under age 18 to wear helmets. She knows kids are going to fall, and said she wants them to be able to learn how to fall in a safe environment.

“Skateboarding is hard, but we teach them how to approach things and how to skate on ramps,” Ries said. “We want kids to progress in the safest manner.

There are no advanced skateboarders here on Saturday morning, besides the instructors. No one is flying through the park, so this is a good place for kids to get a taste of what it’s like.”

Ries opened the 10,000-square-foot indoor park in August. Since then, thousands of skateboarders have come

from all over Northern Illinois and surrounding states to practice their skills.

Ries said her park is one of only three heated indoor parks in the state.

“We needed a place to skate in the winter because there is a big skateboarding community,” she said. “It’s a great outlet because it’s not only a physical and athletic activity, but it’s also mental. It takes work and dedication. You have to make a commitment and skate several times a week. It’s not something you can just jump into and be good at.”

The Saturday morning drop-in lessons are $5, which include skateboard use. The lessons are open to the public, and all ages are encouraged to attend.

Lessons are given from 10 a.m. to noon, and instructors work with beginning skaters. Fargo Skateboarding is located at 629 E. Lincoln Hwy.

DeKalb Council to hear downtown redevelopment plans

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A redevelopment plan for a series of downtown buildings, including the former Otto’s nightclub, may require a $3 million city contribution and council approval by March to proceed.

John Pappas of Pappas Development owns the building at 123 E. Lincoln Highway and also has contracts to buy properties at 122 S. First St. and 112, 118 and 122 E. Lincoln Highway.

He plans to demolish these structures and build a four-story apartment building with commercial space on the first floor. The businesses on the first floor would include Barb City Bagels, whose existing property would be torn down as part of the project to create a parking lot for apartment tenants.

The project also will require the rezoning of the property from a central business district to a planned development commercial district, but if the council supports the project, Pappas should receive zoning approval by March.

The DeKalb City Council will hear an overview of the proposal during its meeting tonight at the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St. The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission also will hold a public hearing Wednesday at the municipal building regarding the rezoning needed for the proposal.

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb teen accused of shooting two people in the Pleasant Street neighborhood in February 2016 plans to take his case to a jury in May. Scott K. Brewer, 17, formerly of the 800 block of Springfield Lane, DeKalb, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and other crimes after a shooting last February that sent two people to the hospital. Aggravated battery with a firearm is a Class X felony typically punishable

by six to 30 years in prison. Although he was 16 at the time, Brewer was charged as an adult.

This week, Brewer rejected a plea deal from prosecutors that called for him to serve 85 percent of a six-year prison sentence. A trial date is set for May 16, defense attorney Bob Nolan said.

Police said Brewer pulled the trigger in an afternoon shooting Feb. 25, 2016, at 10th and Pleasant streets in DeKalb that injured two people. One person was shot in the foot, the other in the chest, according to court documents.

The shooting happened after what witnesses and police described as an argument between two groups of people near 10th and Pleasant. After a short talk, police said Brewer began firing.

On his Facebook page, Brewer said he had been a student at DeKalb High School. Police later said he had been arrested a month before the shooting for making gun threats at school.

Brewer is being held at the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

He is next due in court March 14.

Information in police reports is obtained from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and city police departments.

Individuals listed in police reports who have been charged with a crime have not been proved guilty in court.

Christian Contreras, 20, formerly of the 200 block of Maplewood Avenue in DeKalb, also is charged with aggravated battery with a firearm and mob action in connection with the shooting.

His case remains pending; no trial date has been set.

Contreras was arrested shortly after the shooting. Brewer was arrested hours later as he walked to his home in DeKalb, according to a police news release. A search of Brewer’s home turned up an empty ammunition magazine, police said.

browland@shawmedia.com KIRKLAND – Two men died Saturday after colliding head-on while driving off-road vehicles on Cherry Valley Road north of Kirkland in DeKalb County.

Dakota M. Sikula, 21, of 45W963 Allen Road, Hampshire, was traveling east on a 2002 Honda ATV. He collided head-on with Douglas W. Wallace Jr., 21, of 4783 Cherry Valley Road, Kirk-

land, who was traveling west on a 1997 Yamaha dirt bike.

Wallace was driving without lights at 7:37 p.m. Saturday on Cherry Valley Road west of Bucks Road near his home on Cherry Valley Road. Sikula was driving with his ATV lights on, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. Both men died at the scene, police said.

The sheriff’s office and the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office are investigating the crash.

Kennedy: ‘We’re not an authoritarian country’

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Former U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy said he thinks what President Donald Trump has done so far in office will “hopefully spark a re-examination of who we are as a people.”

The member of one of the nation’s most famous Democratic families told The Associated Press in an interview he sees threats to the constitutional form of government, and said his father, the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, of Massachusetts, believed that Americans should never take democracy for granted.

“He lost his brothers serving this country, whether in World War II or in elective office, and just knew that this country needed to be the beacon that everyone looked at it around the world,” Kennedy told the AP. “He’d be so distressed right now to see people cynically tear apart what so many people have laid down their lives to build.”

The former eight-term congressman from Rhode Island left office in 2011 and has stayed in the public sphere as an activist for better care for mental health and addiction, with endeavors such as The Kennedy Forum. He now lives in

Illinois worker pay battle to resurface in court, assembly

SPRINGFIELD – The question of whether to continue paying government workers during Illinois’s budget stalemate will surface again this week as a court takes up the state attorney general’s motion to halt payments and lawmakers consider a threat by Gov. Bruce Rauner to veto one of two proposals to keep them going.

A judge in St. Clair County on Thursday is scheduled to hear Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s request to end paychecks until the state breaks its nearly two-year-long budget gridlock. She is asking the judge to reverse a previous court order requiring Illinois to pay state employees even in the absence of a budget, arguing that stopping pay is constitutional and will hasten a budget agreement.

Girls, 11 and 12, shot in head in separate Chicago attacks

CHICAGO – Police are investigating separate shootings on Chicago’s South Side that left two young girls in critical condition.

The Chicago Tribune reported that an 11-year-old girl was sitting in a parked vehicle Saturday night when she was hit by gunfire in the back of the head.

A 12-year-old girl was shot in the head while playing with friends in an unrelated shooting the same night.

The weekend’s gun violence also claimed the lives of a 23-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman in separate incidents.

The Tribune reported that at least four others were wounded Saturday in separate attacks.

Illinois teachers learn to help students affected by trauma

DECATUR – Six schools in central Illinois are participating in a pilot project to train teachers, administrators and other adults to help students who are affected by trauma.

The program began through a Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration grant to train school district personnel and community members, the Decatur Herald & Review reported. They learn to approach their work with awareness of trauma, which can affect children’s brain development and their emotional and physical health.

The agency’s statistics show that in the past year, 60 percent of youth nationally have been exposed to violence, including assault with a weapon, sexual victimization, child maltreatment and dating violence.

Schools participating in the program include Franklin and Muffley Schools, Phoenix Academy, Argenta-Oreana, Sangamon

Valley and Deland-Weldon schools.

The program’s goal is to expand the project next year until all schools in the area are involved.

Bradley to build $86M business, engineering site

PEORIA – Bradley University in central Illinois is moving forward with plans to build a new, $86 million business and engineering complex.

The Peoria Journal-Star reported that faculty and staff will begin moving out of an existing building after spring graduation to make way for the new complex. It will be built on the current site of Baker Hall, which will be demolished.

The 270,000-square-foot building is intended to attract more students, businesses and local community members to campus. It’s also part of efforts to jumpstart collaboration between the engineering and business departments.

The board of trustees gave the go-ahead to proceed with the plans after the Peoria university raised almost half of the total cost. The building is scheduled to be completed in 2020.

OROVILLE, Calif. – Thousands of northern Californians were told to leave their homes Sunday evening, as an emergency spillway in the country’s tallest dam was in danger of failing and unleashing uncontrolled floodwaters on towns below.

The emergency spillway of the Oroville Dam in Northern California could fail within an hour, unleashing uncontrolled floodwaters from Lake Oroville, the California Department of Water Resources said Sunday afternoon.

People in downstream areas need to leave the area immediately, the department said.

Officials earlier Sunday stressed the dam was structurally sound and said there was no threat to the public.

Residents of Oroville, a town of 16,000 people, should head north toward Chico, and other cities should follow orders from their local law enforcement agencies, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Yuba County Office of Emergency Services asked residents in the valley floor, including Marysville, a city of 12,000 people, to evacuate and take routes to the east, south or west and avoid traveling north toward Oroville.

The California Department of Water Resources said it is releasing as much as 100,000

cubic feet per second from the main, heavily damaged spillway to try to drain the lake.

Department Kevin Dossey told the Sacramento Bee that the emergency spillway was rated to handle 250,000 cubic feet per second, but it began to show weakness Sunday at a small fraction of that. Flows through the spillway peaked at 12,600 cubic feet per second at 1 a.m. Sunday and were down to 8,000 cubic feet per second by midday.

Water began flowing over the emergency spillway at the Oroville Dam in Northern California on Saturday for the first time in its nearly 50-year history after heavy rainfall.

Unexpected erosion chewed through the main spillway earlier this week, sending chunks of concrete flying and creating a 200-foot-long, 30-foot-deep hole that continues growing. Engineers don’t know what caused the cave-in, but Chris Orrock, a spokesman for the state Department of Water Resources, said it appears the dam’s main spillway has stopped crumbling even though it’s being used for water releases.

About 150 miles northeast of San Francisco, Lake Oroville is one of California’s largest man-made lakes, and the 770-foot-tall Oroville Dam is the nation’s tallest. The lake is a central piece of California’s government-run water delivery network, supplying water for agriculture in the Central Valley and residents and businesses in Southern California.

People shouldn’t need to show their papers to get medical care

As I was deciding whether to intubate my new patient – a 23-year-old man, ravaged by cancer, clearly struggling to breathe – his mother handed me two envelopes.

In broken English, she urged me to open them. In the first was a copy of his medical records: prior treatments, scans and labs. In the second was his certificate of American citizenship.

Later, when her son had a tube down his throat and an IV in his neck, I asked her why she’d brought the citizenship document. “I don’t know,” she said, avoiding eye contact, her voice breaking. “I thought maybe ...”

With the help of an Arabic interpreter, she told me that after driving halfway to the hospital, she’d returned to the family’s home to get the certificate – fearing that without it her son might not be treated or would be turned over to some authority.

As a doctor, I’ve grown accustomed to things I never thought I would. Not infrequently, my scrubs are splattered with vomit or blood. There are days when half a dozen patients die and I’m left wondering if I’ve given them some small measure of comfort or peace in their final moments.

But today, if I hope for anything, it’s that I never grow accustomed to mothers feeling compelled to bring me papers proving their dying children are worth treating. I pray that man-made cruelty doesn’t add to the inevitable suffering caused by laws of nature.

I worry that new immigration policies – such as President Trump’s recent executive order – are adding to that suffering. There’s been much talk about the number of people affected and whether the travel ban will survive legal challenges. But the deeper, longer-lasting consequence of harsh immigration policy and rhetoric is a destruction of the bonds that tie us together as doctors, patients and communities. And that will be true regardless of the fate of the ban.

American medicine has a complicated history regarding care for vulnerable and marginalized populations. The past two decades have seen improvements in reducing racial health disparities, expanding access to care and growing more culturally sensitive toward those of different backgrounds.

At the same time, many racial and ethnic minorities feel uncomfortable seeking medical attention and face significant language barriers.

Many immigrants simply don’t seek care

– fearing mistreatment, costs or deportation.

We in the medical community have struggled with these issues. But the current political climate exacerbates these problems and crystallizes the need to more urgently examine and address the subtle and not-sosubtle ways people feel marginalized within the medical system. That’s true not just for patients, but for doctors, too.

Nearly a quarter of U.S. physicians were trained abroad – and these doctors play a critical role in our health system. (And almost 25 percent of health care workers are foreign-born.) Foreign-trained doctors are more likely to practice in lower-paying specialties with physician shortages, such as psychiatry, pediatrics and primary care.

They’re also more likely to work in rural and underserved areas. They provide care that’s just as good as domestically trained doctors.

But these physicians often face substantial training and licensing hurdles before being allowed to practice in the U.S. and sometimes additional discrimination within the hospitals and communities in which they serve. More-restrictive immigration policies will make things worse.

More than 8,000 physicians hail from countries banned by the recent executive order – and thousands more come from other Muslim-majority countries. There are already reports of doctors being detained and deported. The issue is not just one of the scale of deportations, but also one of their social impact – the tearing of the societal fabric each time we declare that this doctor, or that patient, doesn’t belong.

I worry that our contentious politics will trump our shared humanity, making it harder for patients to receive – and harder for doctors to provide – good medical care. Is a transgender patient now less likely to get screened for cancer? Does a heavily accented doctor avoid speaking up in a conference?

And what happens if the mother of another dying son, in her fear and panic, forgets her immigration paperwork?

The more turbulent the times, the greater the clarity with which we must speak and the resolve with which we must act. It’s our duty to ensure that patients of all backgrounds feel welcome in our hospitals – and that doctors of all backgrounds feel comfortable caring for them.

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker DeVos wants is to ensure an excellent education for every child and to rescue those who are stuck in failing schools. They point to her advocacy for “school choice” as proof that she would give poor parents an opportunity to send their children to high-performing schools outside their neighborhoods.

Indeed, improving educational opportunity for poor children is an important goal, one of the core civil rights issues of our era. While I disagree with those who claim that public schools are worse than they’ve ever been – actually, many of them are much better – I agree that they haven’t improved enough to equip children for the 21st century. Public schools across the board need more innovation, higher standards, and more accountability for principals and teachers.

But “school choice” is a deceptive term. It encompasses support for charters, public schools that, at their best, break away from the hidebound techniques of traditional public schools to boost the achievement of

even students from modest backgrounds. But DeVos’ advocacy for for-profit charter schools in Michigan (most of the nation’s charter schools are nonprofit) hasn’t helped students. It has only enriched charter school operators.

The term “school choice” also encompasses vouchers, which subvert tax dollars to support private schools.

In those states where vouchers have gained a toehold, the programs usually work by providing parents with a grant, funded by taxpayer dollars, to send their children to any school they choose.

As it turns out, though, most of them don’t serve the poorest households because the grants aren’t large enough. Vouchers average from $2,000 to $5,000. Parochial school tuition averages around $7,000 a year, while nonreligious private schools tend to be much higher. Where would the poorest kids get the rest of the money?

Even if vouchers were more generous, though, they betray a fundamental principle of our pluralistic democracy: They send public dollars to fund narrow belief systems. My second-grader attends an Episcopal school where she is required to attend chapel every Friday. Why should taxpayers who disagree with the beliefs of the Episcopal church subsidize my

child’s education?

And why should my tax dollars support Catholic schools? As much as I respect the current pope, Francis, I still oppose much Catholic doctrine, including the church’s condemnation of homosexuality, its refusal to elevate women to the clergy, and its opposition not only to abortion but also to contraception. Why should my money support those beliefs?

DeVos, a billionaire, isn’t Catholic.

She’s a member of an ultraconservative Calvinist sect that believes in “predestination” – God has already decided who is going to heaven before we are born – and worships private enterprise. Speaking to The Gathering, an annual meeting of super-wealthy conservative Christians in 2001, DeVos compared “the system of education in the country” to a biblical battlefield where Israelites fought the Philistines, according to Politico.

In other words, she means to push vouchers, which would starve public schools of desperately needed funds, to advance her right-wing religious views. Nothing is more dangerous to liberal democratic values than that.

The general public has a right to know more information We are not concerned for ourselves.

When we hear about the Trump administration imposing media blackouts on some federal departments, it’s not the journalists covering the presidency that we worry about. And it’s not reporters we are anxious for when we hear the president and his advisers say they rely on “alternative facts” that only serve to support their opinions. Or when specific media outlets are frozen out as retribution for their commitment to reporting actual facts.

No, we are upset on behalf of you.

The fundamental tenet of journalism is this: We subscribe to the idea that freedom is only achievable when

a country’s citizens have access to factual information they can use to make their own decisions. While not the only conduit of information, journalists are often the ones who provide it. When we are impeded from doing so, we raise a little hell because our audiences expect nothing less.

It is why the press decried President Donald Trump’s ordered media blackouts at the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of the Interior and the Agriculture Department. It is understandable for a new administration to review the way information is shared, or that some information is sensitive and disclosure of it would harm national security. It is unacceptable to com-

pletely stop its dissemination, which is what happened on Inauguration Day when the EPA was told it could not issue news releases, blog updates or posts to the agency’s social media accounts.

When the press is stymied from doing its job, it is taxpayers who are shortchanged. But it is being painted in a different light: The media are, according to Trump officials, the opposition party. During his first full day in office, Trump said he had a “running war with the media. They are among the most dishonest human beings on Earth.”

He has since slammed the New York Times and Washington Post. His spokesmen are forbidden from going

on CNN. These are outlets that have reported factual information he has not liked, and his reaction has been to punish them.

That’s not to say journalists are infallible. Like all professions, there have been bad apples. And mistakes are made even by the good ones. Reputable media organizations correct and apologize when that happens. But the core commitment to our audience has never changed. We will fight for your right to have access to information. And we will remind elected officials that if they truly have the best interests of their constituents at heart, they will not demand to be the owners of information but stewards of it on behalf of those they represent.

There’s a reason that Betsy DeVos’ confirmation as the new secretary of education was such a close vote, requiring Vice President Mike Pence to break the tie. Even in the Trump administration, with its clear suspicion of expertise and competence, DeVos stands out as spectacularly ill-suited for her new post.

There was such a public outcry against her that two Republican senators, Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski and Maine’s Susan Collins, voted against her confirmation. In this hyperpartisan age, that’s extraordinary.

But, then, so is DeVos. And I don’t mean that as a compliment. She is a doctrinaire right-winger who means to destroy public education, replacing it with a system of religious schools that serve the middle class and the wealthy. Implacably hostile to the public commons, she would rip apart a core asset of our democracy.

In the early 19th century, the visionary Horace Mann set about modernizing American education, advocating a system of publicly funded schools that served all children and answered to no sectarian or religious interests. He believed that universal education would equip disciplined citizens who would advance democratic interests. DeVos’ beliefs run counter to Mann’s principles.

SANDWICH – To celebrate Valentine’s Day, the Sandwich Public Library, 821 S. Main St. in Sandwich, will host Date Night at the Library starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

During the free event, adults older than 16 can eat popcorn, drink non-alcoholic sparkling champagne, take pictures in a Valentine’s Day-themed photo booth and watch a showing of the PG-13 movie “Date Night,” starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey. Although the library hosts Throwback Thursday, a free showing of a classic movie each Thursday at 1 p.m., Barb Posinger, reference and reader services librarian, said the date night event will be the first of its kind.

“We wanted library patrons and the community to have a fun night out and not worry about paying anything,” Posinger said. “It will be a fun, free way for couples to celebrate their relationships.” If the turnout for this event is high, Posinger said she plans to organize other holiday-related date night events, including St. Patrick’s Day and Christmas.

David Kuhn competes in marathons, triathlons despite losing eyesight

jseverson@shawmedia.com David Kuhn likes to run along the same mile-long stretch of gravel shoulder on Nelson Road in DeKalb.

Visually impaired by injuries he suffered in a car crash 35 years ago, Kuhn uses a cane to guide himself down the stretch of farmland between Malta Road and Fairview Drive nearly every day when weather permits it. Kuhn wears a shirt with “Blind Runner” printed in big, black letters on front and back as he runs the same stretch over and over.

Back and forth. Back and forth.

Always competing.

“A few people in my running club from time to time have said, ‘Don’t you ever get tired of the scenery never changing?’ ” Kuhn, 64, said with a

laugh.

Since losing his sight for good in the past decade, running and racing have become part of Kuhn’s identity.

Three years ago, Kuhn ran more than halfway across the country in support of his granddaughter with cystic fibrosis. He’s now training for Ironman Triathlons, a series of races across the country that feature a 2.4 mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run.

Kuhn, who came to DeKalb in 1991, now has run in more than 50 marathons around the country, along with a handful of half-marathons and eight triathlons. Last year, he took second place in the physically challenged division at the Wisconsin Ironman in Madison – finishing the triathlon in 16 hours, 3 minutes and 20 seconds.

“He’s a very driven person,” said Stacee Seay, who recently became Kuhn’s swim coach and is a coach for Chicago-based Dare2Tri, an organization that specializes in training athletes with physical disabilities or visual impairments. “He’s very motivated. He’s highly intelligent.”

Kuhn competes with a guide, usually someone from an extensive network of runners he’s built over the past decade. He frequently joins with strangers who soon become friends. During triathlons, they share a tandem bicycle, run while each holds their end of a small tether and swim side by side – a longer tether wrapped around each of their upper legs.

He wants to compete in the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, and fondly talks about

all the relationships he’s created through his running and all the accomplishments he’s had despite losing his eyesight.

“I wouldn’t mind having it back though,” he laughed.

LIFE-CHANGING NIGHT

Kuhn was heading home to Bolingbrook in his tractor-trailer one night in November 1981.

Driving south on Interstate 55, another car lost control and slammed into the front left of Kuhn’s truck, and he jumped down between his seats and braced for impact as it headed for the concrete guardrail.

He doesn’t remember the collision. Instead, he remembers coming to with a burning feeling along his

side – broken ribs – and hearing and smelling the fuel pouring out of his truck while the cabin faced east sitting atop the guardrail and the empty trailer still facing south.

“The right door opened and somebody said, ‘Hey buddy, you better get out of here before this thing bursts into flames,’ ” Kuhn said.

In the year after the accident, Kuhn was having vision problems and a retina specialist told him that eventually – it could be a week, a month or years – Kuhn would go blind because of the damage done to his retinas in the crash.

“I passed out,” Kuhn said. “I literally passed out.”

Emotionally numb after coming back to consciousness, Kuhn eventually gathered his things and went to his car.

He started the engine and listened to the radio before realizing he was in no state to drive and turned the car off. He would do this over and over, for hours and hours. Looking around the parking lot, he was the only car left. Everybody who worked in the professional building had gone home.

“I finally thought, ‘You’ve played poker with your brother and his friends, you’ve been dealt some good hands, you’ve been dealt some bad hands. You won with both, you lost with both. Life just handed you a new hand. What are you going to do with it?’ ” Kuhn said.

RUNNING FOR A CAUSE

Kuhn ran 25 miles May 15, 2014, in Seattle.

The next day, he ran 25 more.

The brutal two-day stretch was the start of a fundraising event he began in honor of his granddaughter, Kylie, who was born with cystic fibrosis is now 14 years old. What better way to do something than to run?

“It was just one of those crazy ideas,” Kuhn said. “It was just something I wanted to do. My granddaughter, she’s precious to me.”

He became a traveling running show, moving from city to city and bringing awareness to the disease while piling up his mileage. During the three-and-a-half month trek, Kuhn clocked in 1,899 miles – from Seattle to Madison, Wisconsin – and he said $10,000 was raised for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Kylie, whose family lives in Springfield, Missouri, had her pancreas and spleen removed last year because of complications with the disease.

During the journey, he came across waves of people touched by the genetic disorder, which greatly

With the fatigue nearly unbearable during his runs, his mind would go back to hearing the stories from parents and the emotion in their voice.

“When I’d wake up and want to forget this whole thing, that’s what I kept thinking about all these different people,” Kuhn said. “Moms telling me their story and crying, dads would talk – this guy talked about the loss of his daughter and his voice, oh my gosh, you just knew this guy lived it every single day.

He’s in pain every single day, and he misses his daughter.

“What was going on for me was nothing. It was so minor compared to what everybody else was going through.”

STILL MOMENTS TO BE MISSED

Kuhn’s first marathon came in Chicago in 1999 after getting talked into it by his optometrist. He went about a decade before running it again – this time as part of a fundraiser for a local senior service center. It’s only been recently, since his vision has gotten worse, that his passion for racing has gotten stronger.

The medals from his achievements are nice, but Kuhn misses being able to see his daughters and grandchildren.

He vaguely remembers seeing Bryce, 16, and Kylie, 14, when they were younger, but now has memory of Gabe, 11, or Kaiden, 6.

He wants to see what his daughters, Kellie, 40, and Tiffanie, 34, look

like as adults.

He no longer can see faces in his dreams. Instead, the faces have become distorted – they are either fuzzy or surreal, as in a wild Picasso painting. There are little moments when he was still able to see that he preciously holds onto. In the aftermath of the accident, when he still could drive his rig, Kuhn would occasionally take an early morning freight up to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

With dawn moments away, he would take the exit off Interstate 43 to Manitowoc and head to his favorite rest area. Once he parked, he grabbed his thermos of coffee and a couple of boxes of little chocolate doughnuts and sat on a large boulder.

Finally, the sun would slowly rise in the east – the colors making it look like an artist’s palette filling the sky and dancing off Lake Michigan.

“It was just such a beautiful sight,” Kuhn said.

BOSTON MARATHON BOMBING

Kuhn and his guides were about 3 miles from the finish line of the Boston Marathon in 2013 when he heard – and felt – emergency vehicles rush past them.

His right retina had detached in 1993 – he lost all sight in that eye immediately after that – and his left eye slowly began to deteriorate in the past decade to the point where he could only see shadows in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon

bombing, which killed three people and injured hundreds.

“All of a sudden, runners were stopping in front of us,” Kuhn said.

“In fact, my guides were grabbing my wrist to pull me around them and I mentioned to one of them, ‘How is looking at your cellphone going to get you to the finish line?’ Joking around, but not realizing how unusual that is because the last 3 miles, you’re head down and no matter what, you’re going to make it.”

Through the chaos, a member of the Massachusetts Association of Blind and Visually Impaired waved down Kuhn and his two guides – Bryon Guida and Boston-resident Joslynn Lee. “You won’t be able to finish the race, there were two bombings at the finish line,” the employee told them.

Initially, Kuhn thought the warning was an unfunny joke. Instead, the group walked half a block down the path to at least cross the 40-kilometer timing mat. Almost instantly after they crossed, members of the marathon organization came and rolled up the mat.

As they walked about five blocks back to the Massachusetts Association of Blind and Visually Impaired, crying locals put their arms on Kuhn and his group and pleaded with them to one day come back and run the famous marathon again.

On April 21, 2014, Kuhn finished the Boston Marathon in 6:15:26.

Fear or negativity didn’t dissuade him, because David Kuhn is a competitor.

At 170, sophomore Blah Danweih won three consolation matches by decision to put himself through to state.

He lost the third-place match, taking fourth overall, but Hiatt was encouraged by the matches Danweih put together.

“It was huge for him to punch a ticket to state,” Hiatt said. “All year long, the coaching staff, we believed in him, we knew he had it in him, we knew if he could put together his best matches he could do it. So it was great to see him wrestle his best matches of the year.”

“It’s a school record, so that means a lot,” Kaneland coach Joe Orosco said.

“It’s big as a program, because we’ll be losing four seniors, so we’ll be in a rebuilding phase soon. Those guys have been the mainstay of our team as far as leadership and points. Hopefully, their example can motivate those younger kids to work even harder.”

No Spartan or Knight claimed a

sectional title, but Sycamore’s Trevor Boryla (106) and Kaneland’s Riley Vanik (182) and Colin Gussman (220) each took second.

For Sycamore, Justin Montani (113), Artimus Cunningham (170) and Joey Beaudoin (220) each took fourth to earn a trip to Champaign. Kaneland’s Nathan Orosco (106), Austin Kedzie (120) and Hayden Patterson (170) each took third for a trip to state, which begins Thursday in Champaign.

Sycamore coach Brian Davis said he was happy the Spartans won some must-win matches, but was disappointed the team lost each of its final round bouts.

“Obviously, we want to turn around

some of those results in the last round,” Davis said. “The round before that, we were able to run the table and get guys into those placing bouts. We have to fight different positions better and stay more basic with others. Otherwise it’s back to hard work with live wrestling and conditioning in the wrestling room the next three days.”

Boryla lost, 13-0, in his final match, but he said he’s happy just to reach the state tournament.

“It didn’t matter. I accomplished what I wanted to do today,” Boryla said.

“Hopefully, I’ll do well downstate.”

Davis said it also was a big deal for the program to send four wrestlers to state after having a single entrant the

past few years.

“It’s a great step for our program,” Davis said. “Those guys have worked hard the last three weeks. We had a couple of matches last week that we turned around. They have three days to get better, clean up some things and go compete in the state tournament.

It’s a great opportunity for them to represent Sycamore wrestling.”

Vanik ran into a familiar foe in the finals – losing to Morris’ Cody Baldridge in the final round, 3-2.

“Cody is really strong,” Vanik said.

“I’ve known him a while, and we’ve wrestled each other since sophomore year. He just came out more aggressive. You win some, you lose some.”

DeKALB – Two DeKalb underclassmen qualified for the state wrestling tournament with top-four finishes at Saturday’s Class 3A Barrington Sectional, one of whom has been a force all year and another one finding his potential.

“It’s definitely exciting that they’re young and know in the back of your head, ‘Wow this is going to be a fun the next three or four years,’ ” Barbs coach Sam Hiatt said.

“But right now we’re focused to next week and not waiting for the next couple years.”

The state tournament begins Thursday in Champaign.

On Saturday, freshman 120-pounder Fabian Lopez followed up last week’s regional title with a sectional title and state berth.

Lopez won by major decision in the semifinals to clinch his spot at state and then won, 8-7, after holding off a late rally from 2016 state placer Josh Stenger of Huntley, the same opponent he beat last week, for the regional title.

“Fabian had a great tournament, put himself in really good position to do some damage next week,” Hiatt said. “In the finals he had a rematch from last week, and the kid’s a returning state place-winner, and he showed some great poise not to panic when the kid hit him with

Courtney Woods scored 8 of the points on the 16-0 run, including back-to-back 3-pointers to close the run for the Huskies (17-6 overall, 10-2 Mid-American Conference). She finished with 19 and was 3 for 4 on 3-pointers in the game. She also had 10 rebounds.

Ally Lehman led the Huskies with a game-high 29 points and 14 rebounds. Mikayla Voigt scored 17 and Kelly Smith scored 14 before fouling out.

The Broncos (9-15, 5-7) scored the first 8 points of the game and led by as much as 186. They were up 32-22 at halftime, but the Huskies opened the second half on a 10-1 run.

They took their first lead with 14:32 left on an Austin Pauga 3-pointer, but Brandon Johnson answered with a 3-pointer for the Broncos to tie the game again 31 seconds later. After Thomas Wilder hit a pair of free throws on the next WMU possession, the game was never tied again.

Eugene German scored 20 to lead the Huskies, while Marin Maric added 14 points and 12 rebounds. Levi Bradley scored 16 points.

Wilder led the Broncos with 17 despite shooting 3 of 13. He was 11 for 11 from the freethrow line.

White Sox pitchers and catchers report to spring training Tuesday at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona. It will be a group that includes the most closely watched trade candidate in baseball, left-hander Jose Quintana.

Steady, focused and resolute, Quintana calmly answered questions about his precarious position as the Sox’s most valuable trade chip during SoxFest, saying he not only hopes to remain but expects to stay on the South Side.

It seems more a matter of when, not if, Quintana is politely shown the door.

Although deals are indeed made during spring training, the big ones involving players of Quintana’s stature are not commonplace. If he stays, look for him to start Opening Day (April 3 against the Tigers), then go through the trade-rumor mill again as the nonwaiver Aug. 1 deadline approaches. Barring injury or a first-time sag in performance, the 2016 All-Star figures to bring the return general manager Rick Hahn is fixed on securing.

Hahn’s objective? Get a similar package of prospects to what Chris Sale and Adam Eaton yielded to check off the goal of trading the Sox’s top three players, according to wins above replacement, as the first phase of the rebuild-

Whether the trade noise affects Quintana during the spring and/or during the first few months of the season bears watching.

When he was hours away from signing a five-year, $26.5 million extension in the spring of 2014 (which includes club options in 2019 and 2020), Quintana had the roughest outing of his life, failing to retire all nine batters he faced in the first inning of a Cactus League outing against the Athletics.

Then 25, Quintana would admit to a rare case of nerves. Hahn would say that “it played very much on his mind during spring training.”

Cubs face challenges that come with title

The Cubs’ biggest need entering spring training this year?

Ask Theo Epstein, and his first answer is the one he gave last year and likely will give for the next four: pitching.

The Cubs’ never-ending quest for pitching depth aside, Epstein is quick to add one potentially enormous challenge for this year’s team – one as rare as last fall’s championship itself.

“Generally speaking, teams that win it all sometimes face unique challenges, where a lot of things come up that pull everyone associated with the organization in different directions,” the team president said. “And locking back into that team-first, competitive, connected mindset is really important.

“That’s where having such character guys is important,” he added, “and I really trust our group to get locked back in again.”

Epstein, of course, faced the same

challenge as the Boston Red Sox’s general manager in 2005, coming off Boston’s first championship in 86 years.

But it’s hard to imagine that even that Red Sox experience is a full match for the competing distractions and mind-altering substance of this championship for this century-long suffering franchise and its wildly celebrated players.

These guys not only did the national talk show circuit as those Red Sox, but they twerked on “Saturday Night Live” – where they also sang “Go Cubs Go” with Bill Murray. Jimmy Buffet crashed their White House visit last month. Anthony Rizzo was recognized by somebody while vacationing in Thailand. Ben Zobrist signed autographs on his front lawn.

Even rookie relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr., a South Carolina native, was honored this month by the South Carolina state legislature for his part in the Cubs’ championship.

How does anyone top that?

Maybe they don’t.

But that doesn’t change the job they face as pitchers and catchers report for spring training Tuesday. And it definitely doesn’t make it any easier to win it all again as they enter a second consecutive spring favored to do exactly that.

In 14 seasons running baseball departments for two franchises, Epstein has had eight playoff teams, three World Series champs and helped end the two most storied “curses” in American team sports.

One thing his teams haven’t done is repeat, although the Red Sox won 95 games and reached the playoffs again in 2005.

“The primary reason why it’s hard to repeat is just because it’s really difficult to win the World Series,” he said. “In any given year if you’re any old team, you have a 3 percent chance. If you’re the best team, you might have a [10 percent to 12 percent] chance. It’s just hard to do.”

Throw in a post-title celebration – never mind the post-title Celebration of the Century – and the challenges can increase.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Jordan Spieth kept it simple Sunday and won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am for the ninth PGA Tour title of his young career.

Spieth started with a six-shot lead and no one got closer than three all day. He putted for birdie on all but one hole and closed with a 2-under -par 70 for a fourshot victory over former U.S. Amateur champion Kelly Kraft, who shot 67.

U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson shot 68 to finish third. The scenery was as spectacular as it gets on the Monterey Peninsula. The final round was on the dull side, and that was just fine with Spieth.

It was his first 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour since the Masters, where he lost a five-shot lead on the back nine at Augusta National. The 23-year-old Texan ran off 14 straight pars until a 30-foot birdie on the par-3 17th. That allowed for an easy walk up the 18th with a four-shot lead. Spieth’s only other birdie was on the par-5 second when he two-putted from 12 feet. He finished at 19-under 268.

Moses was a defensive end for the Georgia Bulldogs from 2003 to 2005. He played four seasons with the Miami Dolphins from 2007 to 2010 as a linebacker.

Police: Former Syracuse, Celtics center Fab Melo dead at 26

SAO PAULO – Former Syracuse University and Boston Celtics center Fab Melo died in his native Brazil, military police said Sunday. He was 26.

An emergency call Saturday night brought police and paramedics to Melo’s house in Juiz de Fora, in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, according to a police sergeant who gave his name only as Couto. Couto said that when the police arrived, paramedics said Melo was dead, with no signs of violence.

“We don’t know the cause yet. It’s so hard right now, so hard to believe,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim told ESPN .

Season sweep for Thibs vs. Bulls

When the Bulls announced they were firing Tom Thibodeau despite two years left on his contract, it also came with a seemingly classless kick out the door.

“When everyone is on the same page, trust develops and teams can grow and succeed together,’’ board chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement regarding the removal of the then-Bulls coach that afternoon. “Unfortunately, there has been a departure from this culture.’’

There was no retaliation from Thibodeau. He chose to take the high road. Or maybe he just chose to wait to deliver his statement.

Make that two statements and counting after Sunday.

For the second time this season, Thibodeau had the last laugh, sweeping the season series from the Bulls by manhandling the visiting team, 117-89.

Sure, the Bulls were undermanned with Dwyane Wade (right wrist bruise), Jimmy Butler (right heel bruise), Niko-

thy from Thibodeau, think again.

Even with coach Fred Hoiberg forced to start the likes of Taj Gibson, Robin Lopez, Doug McDermott, Michael Carter-Williams and Jerian Grant, it was still no excuse for letting a 21-34 team come out and sprint ahead for a 34-17 first-quarter lead.

Wins are hard to come by, so I’m sure he’s excited along with those guys over there.’’

Thibodeau again downplayed any hard feelings he still carries for the Bulls, but his actions spoke loudly. That meant keeping Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins on the floor until the final few minutes with his team up 20 points. ““I had a great five years there, so I pull for them when they’re not playing against us,’’ Thibodeau said.

Treadmill or run outside?

Dear Doctor: Is walking or running on a treadmill as good as walking or running on concrete streets or sidewalks?

Dear Reader: This is an interesting question, because the definition of “as good as” is quite ambiguous. Good can be defined as having cardiovascular, or other, health benefits, but it also can be defined as having mental or social health benefits, such as those that come from running or walking with another person. For the purposes of this question, let’s look at the cardiovascular aspects.

A 1985 study in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise measured the amount of oxygen consumed during both treadmill running and outdoor running. The level of oxygen consumption, termed VO2, is a measure of energy expenditure with exercise.

The subjects ran 950 meters on a treadmill and outdoors. The subjects also ran at varying speeds and at different elevation grades.

The investigators found no difference in the amounts of oxygen consumed with either the outdoor or treadmill running. This was consistently seen, even when there were changes in speed or elevation grade.

A 1996 study in the Journal of Sports Sciences similarly looked at the differences in VO2 in nine athletes who ran both outside and on treadmills at varying speeds and elevation grades. This study showed some significant differences in the VO2 between outside and treadmill running. Overall, those who exercised outside consumed more oxygen than those on a treadmill. This may be partially related to the wind resistance seen with outdoor exercise.

The authors concluded running outside on flat terrain was similar to treadmill running at a 1 percent elevation grade. So, if you want to equate your treadmill running to what you might experience outside, place your treadmill at a 1 percent grade.

from outdoor running in one respect: Your muscles respond differently. Because a treadmill is powered by a machine, not your body, the hamstring muscles are not used as much – something you may notice if you normally run on a treadmill and then decide to go running outside. In that case, to prevent an injury, slow your pace.

A significant benefit from running on a treadmill is the belt of the treadmill is much more forgiving than the concrete of the sidewalk. While there has been no long-term study regarding the benefit of treadmill running on the joints, it stands to reason exercising on a treadmill could decrease the incidence of knee and back injuries.

Alternatively, one definite positive from outdoor running is it’s less monotonous than treadmill running. The changes of scenery and terrain keep things interesting. When I run on a trail, I constantly am looking at the rocks I have to avoid, and I often have to move laterally to follow the trail. When I get to the top of the mountain, looking down at the expanse of earth below me, I get a perspective that is much different than running on a treadmill. This cannot be measured, but it motivates me to run again. If you like running or walking on a treadmill, by all means continue doing this. The cardiovascular benefits are similar to outdoor exercise, and it may be less hard on your joints. The most important thing is to take the time and exercise, whether it be inside or outside.

I thought it was a great idea; a lot of my co-workers were unsure and wanted more information about what specifically we would do. My boss said she would get more information and send it out to us. However, a few of my co-workers are outright opposed to the idea and think they shouldn’t be required to do it.

A year ago when this came up, one of them said they shouldn’t have to give up their free time. I think it’s wrong to turn down a chance to help others when they are able. A novel event for mixed teams was held from October 31 to November 2, 2016. Four teams played online in three venues. The Bridge Base Online (BBO) team was at the Silver Cloud Broadway Hotel in Seattle; Lavazza competed at the company’s research center in Turin, Italy; and the Chinese Contract Bridge Association (CCBA) and Yeh played in the Beijing International Convention Center.

The event consisted of a round robin of 16-board matches. The final result was Lavazza 83.64 victory points, CCBA 65.98, Yeh 49.59 and BBO 40.79.

The highlight for the BBO team was the participation of Bill Gates, who partnered Sharon Osberg. Their teammates were Jill Meyers-Bob Hamman and Sheri Winestock-Fred Gitelman.

Today’s deal was one that Gates played. At his table, North-South were “happy” with three clubs, made with an overtrick.

But in the given auction, Meyers bid a game-invitational three clubs, and Hamman went for game in no-trump. West led the spade two: three, ace, six. East returned the spade nine: king, four, heart five.

What did Hamman do next?

Declarer could have gotten lucky in clubs, but knew that that was against the odds -- 16.96 percent, to be precise. Instead, Hamman played a diamond to the ace and a heart to his 10. With hearts 3-3, West had no defense, but she surprisingly led another spade, so Hamman immediately claimed nine tricks: three spades, one heart, four diamonds and one club.

That gave BBO 10 international match points against Lavazza.

Description of Proposed Action DeKalb County Highway Department is proposing to replace a structurally deficient bridge carrying Somonauk Road over Somonauk Creek. The location is approximately 4 miles south of Hinckley and 3 miles north of Somonauk, Illinois (see map).

The slippershell (Alasmidonta viridis) is an Illinois threatened species of freshwater mussel. Surveys conducted in 2016 by the Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS) found one fresh dead and one relict shell of this species in the project area. INHS also determined that this reach of Somonauk Creek provided suitable habitat for this listed species.

It is anticipated that all impacts will be temporary in nature, and once the new bridge structure is completed the stream habitat will recover. DeKalb County Highway Department has committed to a number of measures to avoid and reduce impacts to the habitat and this listed species that are described in detail in the Conservation Plan prepared for this project. Searches will be conducted and any live mussels found (of any species not just the slippershell) will be relocated by qualified personnel to a suitable reach of stream out of harm's way at the direction of the Illinois Department of (Published in the Daily Chronicle, February 6, 13 & 20, 2017.)1262971 Natural Resources prior to commencement of any construction activities.
