Mysterious smell follows mom POLL

Here’s a little disclaimer for the faint of heart. We all know parenting comes with various trials and tribulations.

I was driving in my car last week thinking to myself, ‘What is that smell?’ It wasn’t smelling as fresh and clean as it usually does.

Like a bloodhound, I started sniffing around the car. I couldn’t pinpoint where this smell was coming from. It was faint, but it wasn’t a smell of flowers or potpourri. It was something nasty.

Knowing that Hannah Jo is potty training, my thoughts ran rapidly through all sorts of possibilities.

Did she have an accident in her car seat? Were there soiled clothes from day care that I forgot?

As I got out of the car, it seemed that the smell was following me. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.

Where was it coming from? I checked the diaper bag for any smelly diapers or clothes – nothing was in it.

At last, I gave up. I took off my coat and went to tell my husband about the situation.

He started laughing. He suggested I ask Hannah Jo if she had an accident anywhere in the car.

So I did just that.

She clearly answered, no.

Then she proceeded to grab my hand and lead me to the coat rack, where she pointed to

my coat.

I ran up to my coat and smelled it. Sure enough, the sleeve faintly reeked.

Yep, I now know exactly what happened.

Last week, Hannah Jo had an accident on a kitchen chair. She was so embarrassed that she didn’t tell me until I noticed. I cleaned her up, and the chair, and we continued on with dinner. But I’d forgotten that my coat was hanging from the chair at the time.

Immediately, I chucked the coat in the washer.

Had anyone else noticed that smell on me?

So ridiculous. But at that point, I didn’t even care.

I finally had found the culprit. It was the coat, and I was satisfied.

There never is a dull moment while parenting.

STEAM Learning Center feasibility study to be presented to DeKalb council

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The prospect of a multimillion dollar science, technology, engineering, arts and math learning center in downtown DeKalb is getting high praise ahead of the presentation of a feasibility study Monday, but would require a $4 million investment from the city.

Northern Illinois University, the DeKalb Firefighter’s Historical Foundation and Proudly DeKalb worked with the city on a plan to construct a nearly 35,000-square-foot structure that would provide services and resources that might not be available in schools or libraries. The DeKalb City Council approved a study in June to determine how to move forward with the project.

“I am struck by the truly inspiring legacy of learning that permeates the boundaries of Northern Illinois University and into our community, and I believe the STEAM Learning Center is the next step in fostering that legacy,” DeKalb Mayor John Rey said in a statement. “There will be positive impact on the atmosphere of downtown with activity carried over into businesses located nearby.”

The center’s operating budget is estimated to be between $200,000 and $500,000 for the first three years, as much as $1.2 million for years three to five, and more than $2.5 million going into the 10th year.

After reviewing 11 possible locations for the building, the project team selected two sites based on parking availability, visibility, room for expansion and consistency with the city’s downtown revitalization plans.

By being near the Egyptian Theatre and DeKalb Public Library, the STEAM Learning Center’s construction would create a “cultural triangle” within the downtown area, according to the study.

The study also provides three financing methods for each location: a nonprofit development, a public-private partnership development and a city development.

The first site is the NIU-owned Monat Building at 148 N. Third St. It would cost about $12.8 million to build at this location.

A not-for-profit plan would require $4 million in tax increment financing funding for construction and another $8.8 million from a capital fundraising campaign. The city

development option is similar to this, but the project would be under city ownership.

The public-private partnership would require $4 million in TIF funds and a private developer to provide $3 million in equity and obtain a $5.8 million loan for the remaining project costs.

The second site is at the privately owned Mooney property on 204 N. Fourth St., which is roughly twice the size of the Monat property. Construction costs at this location would be about $11.3 million.

With an additional story not needed for the STEAM Learning Center, this location offers the chance for another business to operate within the property. The operating potential of the second floor then can be used by a private developer to help contribute to the center’s construction costs.

The study recommends that the center appoint an executive director and board of directors to oversee activities and make decisions on policy. The study said it is imperative for NIU to be a major partner in the longterm development and operation of the center.

NIU President Doug Baker said in a letter of support that although the

university is not in a position to provide substantial monetary backing to the project, it will support efforts through the participation of NIU staff in the planning process, assignment of NIU STEAM Works staff for support, encouraging NIU students and staff to participate in the center’s planning, and fundraising to support NIU activities at the center.

An assumed construction date for the project is March 2018. It would be substantially complete no later than February 2019. The hope is for the center to take advantage of nearby manufacturing and science industry markets by drawing talented workers in scientific fields to DeKalb.

The study will be presented at the City Council’s Committee of the Whole meeting at 5 p.m. Monday and the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St. The project has gained the support of the DeKalb County Convention and Visitors Bureau, DeKalb County Economic Development Corp., DeKalb Park District, DeKalb Area Arts Council, DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association, Egyptian Theatre and DeKalb Public Library, among others.

Spartan TV gets public cable channel access

SYCAMORE – Students are working toward putting Spartan TV on the air now that an agreement is in place for Sycamore School District 427 to broadcast on the city’s public access cable channel.

The Sycamore City Council voted unanimously this week to approve an agreement with District 427 authorizing the use of Comcast Channel 14 for the student-produced news coverage.

Sycamore High School Principal Tim Carlson said the school’s goal is to have Spartan TV broadcast on the channel by the upcoming fall semester.

Meanwhile, students are developing a business plan, working with city officials and reaching out to community organizations that would potentially be part of Spartan TV’s coverage, Carlson said.

High school students currently produce and stream live videos of school athletic contests, concerts and other events on SpartanTV.org.

Carlson said about 40 students are involved in various roles for Spartan TV, both in front of and behind the camera, and the school is working to develop curriculum that could spark more interest by offering class credit.

“Right now, we’re concerned about making sure it’s sustainable, and making sure it’s not person-dependent,” he said. “So, people will come and go in terms of leadership, and the program will continue.”

Carlson said students in the business academy, who attend a weekly dual-credit class before school, are coming up with a business plan for Spartan TV’s future operations.

“Instead of putting together a hypothetical plan, they’re putting together a real plan,” he said. “They can look back and see what worked well and what didn’t.”

Sycamore mayor District 427 plans to use a studio and equipment donated by a Sycamore High School graduate and to cover the costs of connecting to the Comcast network through private donations.

During a January meeting, council members voiced support for the proposed project and suggested a collaboration allowing city staff to put important messages out through the channel as well.

Tuesday’s agreement will allow the school district to access and operate the public access PEG channel, which is available for noncommercial public education and government programming.

The district will be in charge of operating the channel within the guidelines and regulations of the city’s contract with Comcast that’s been in place since July 2012.

The district also agreed to operate a digital bulletin board when active programming is not being aired, which will include city events, public information notices, and meeting dates and times along with other school and community information.

City Manager Brian Gregory said staff and students would report annually to the council about Spartan TV’s operations and provide updates on the program.

Mayor Ken Mundy said he is looking forward to seeing more content from Spartan TV. “If you’ve got the link you can watch these young folks do these installments; it’s very well done,” Mundy said. “It’s a great way to communicate, and it will only get better with this agreement.”

Sycamore School District 427 Board to hear staff reduction plan DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore School District 427 Board is set to hear about a potential continuation of the past two years of districtwide staff cuts during its regular meeting Tuesday.

The board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sycamore Middle School, 150

Maplewood Drive.

Superintendent Kathy Countryman is scheduled to present a preliminary staffing reduction proposal as part of her report, according to the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting.

The agenda does give details of how many employees or positions might be eliminated.

The report will be presented as an informational item for discussion;

board members are not scheduled to take action on the reductions during this meeting.

Last year, the district dismissed 18 employees, including 12 full-time teachers. This was after laying off four full-time employees and three parttime employees and reducing four positions in 2015.

During the Jan. 24 meeting, board members unanimously approved a

$2.3 million reduction for fiscal 2018 as part of the district’s three-year plan to reach a balanced budget by the end of the 2017-18 school year. Countryman had said that a staff reduction plan would be presented in February if it is deemed necessary to reach a balanced budget.

Officials are set to bring a tentative budget to the board in June before presenting a final budget in August.

Tom and Pamela Dean Collins met as grad students and married in Eugene on October 9, 1982. They were each other’s best friends and lifelong partners.

Following his PhD in Molecular Biology, Tom did an NIH-NRSA postdoctoral fellowship at UCLA where he made good friends among the other post-docs and grad students and learned how to be a good experimental scientist. In October, 1992, Tom and Pam arrived at Northern Illinois University which became their home for the rest of his life. There, Tom specialized in research into plant genetics, gene regulation, and molecular and developmental biology. In recent years, he worked across institutions to coordinate a team of scientists who decoded the DNA sequence of two parent petunia species - a feat that could spur development of more petunia varieties for consumers and advance research within the plant’s family, which includes tomato, potato and pepper. The project involved researchers from nearly 30 institutions in 10 countries, with Tom directing the overall sequencing plan, and the results were published in the prestigious journal Nature Plants.

Tom took pride in being not only a scholar but also a teacher and mentor. He served two six-year stints as director of NIU’s Plant Molecular Biology Center and more than a decade as Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Biological Sciences. Easy going and gregarious, he was dedicated to

student success, and served on an extraordinary number of student thesis and dissertation committees. He particularly enjoyed working with students one-on-one or in small groups.

Tom played an active role in the DeKalb community. He was on the Ellwood House Board for 15 years. As President of the Gurler Heritage Association Tom worked to continue the legacy of Helen Merritt, its founder. He belonged to Main Street DeKalb and directed the City of DeKalb Downtown Facade Improvement program for 6 years. The project leveraged a $500,000 city fund into many times that. Tom revived his French Horn skills from college days and wore out his Dad’s silk tuxedo playing for over 20 years with the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the City of DeKalb Municipal Band, the Kishwaukee Brass Quintet and the Kishwaukee Community Band. He was a stalwart of the DeKalb County Democrats.

Tom loved skiing with his brother, John on annual trips to Jackson Hole, Aspen, Steamboat Springs, and his beloved Snowbird. He and Pam enjoyed their cottage in Dunedin, Florida, and their gardens and restored Victorian house in DeKalb. They spent lovely summers sailing along the west coast of Florida, the Balearic Islands off Spain, the Strait of Georgia between Vancouver Island and mainland Canada, and multiple times along the glorious coast of Croatia. Win is survived by his wife of 15 years, Judy; his step children, Jani Stear, Drs. Jon and Kristi Barnewolt and Drs. Joshua and Kate Barnewolt; six grandchildren by marriage, and two great grandchildren. Win also leaves one cousin by marriage, Ann Gurney, along with countless dear friends who are as much cherished as family.

SYCAMORE – A Sycamore man faces felony drug charges after a Friday-morning police raid uncovered cocaine, Ecstasy, marijuana and prescription drugs in his home, police said.

At about 9 a.m. Friday, police searched the home of 26-year-old Samuel I. MacAdam in the 300 block of Orchard Lane while investigating complaints that he was selling drugs, Sycamore police Cmdr. Michael Anderson said.

Sycamore police investigators obtained a warrant to search the home after a three-week investigation, Anderson said.

MacAdam was charged with possession of Ecstasy, marijuana, cocaine and prescription drugs, according to a news release from the Sycamore Police Department. Anderson said police found more than 100 grams of marijuana in the house that MacAdam was renting.

Police also found evidence that MacAdam was selling drugs, according to a news release.

MacAdam faces charges for the possesSamuel I. sion of between 5 and 15 MacAdam grams of Ecstasy with intent to deliver and between 100 and 500 grams of marijuana, according to the release.

If convicted of the most serious charge, possession of Ecstasy with intent to deliver, he could face four to 15 years in prison.

MacAdam is being held at the DeKalb County Jail pending a bond hearing Saturday.

Anderson praised the cooperation between local law enforcement agencies.

The raid was conducted by the DeKalb County Special Operations Team, which includes officers from the city of DeKalb, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and the Sycamore Police Department.

Sugar is more than just bad for our bodies and waistlines – it’s also linked to serious health issues like cardiovascular disease.

Long known for adding empty calories to our food, sugar – added sugar, in particular – doesn’t just make you fat, it can make you sick, said Laura Schmidt, a professor of health policy in the School of Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco.

Schmidt, a principal investigator at the university’s SugarScience initiative, was part of a research team that uncovered an effort by the sugar industry dating back to the 1960s to suppress the link between sugar and cardiovascular health.

CHICAGO – A new report said Illinois’ financial situation is so bad that the state would have to slash spending by more than 26 percent to balance next year’s budget through cuts alone.

Carol Jean Miller, age 87, of Aurora, IL formerly of Elburn, IL passed away on Friday, February 10, 2017.

She was born on January 4, 1930 the daughter of Ralph and Caroline (Johnson) Furbush.

Carol was united in marriage on November 4, 1950 in Hinckley, IL to Murray “Hank” Miller and they spent the next 60 happy years together until his passing in 2011. Carol worked as a cafeteria worker for many years at Kaneland High School, until her retirement.

Her greatest pleasure was raising a large garden every year and giving away half of what she raised. In her later years, she enjoyed social activities with her friends at Constitution House. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Carol is survived by her children, Larry (Donna) Miller of Yorkville, IL, Jack Miller of DeKalb, IL and Diane (Michael) Moline of Candler, NC; her grandchildren, Christina (Tom) Seibert, Rebecca Miller and Jaclyn (Robin) Goldman, Jessica and James Moline; her great-grandchildren, Michael, Owen and Olivia Seibert and Audrina Goldman; her siblings, Gerald Furbush of McChesney Park, IL, Donna Wright of DeKalb, IL and Elaine Williams of Big Rock, IL; also several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

The Rockford Register Star reported that a Winnebago County judge on Friday set bond at $50,000 for 40-year-old John Horton Jr. Horton’s attorneys and family said they would post the $5,000 needed to bail him out of jail on Friday afternoon.

Horton was sentenced to life in prison without parole after he was convicted for the 1993 fatal shooting of a man during a robbery at a McDonald’s. However the Illinois Appellate Court in October ruled Horton should have a new trial.

SIU trustees approve Carbondale tuition hike

CARBONDALE – The Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees have approved a 3.9 percent increase undergraduate tuition for the Carbondale campus and eliminated out-of-state fees.

WSIL-TV reported the action Thursday increases annual tuition by $351 a year to $9,450.

By eliminating out-of-state fees, the trustees hope to attract more students from outside Illinois. SIU spokeswoman Rae Goldsmith has said the tuition increase is projected to raise $2.9 million in new revenue.

Travel ban opponents seek another court win

WASHINGTON – Opponents of President Donald Trump’s travel ban sought Friday to rack up another legal victory against the measure, believing they have the administration on the defensive after a federal appeals court refused to reinstate the order.

As government attorneys debated their next move, they faced unsympathetic judges on both coasts.

The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided Thursday with the states of Washington and Minnesota in refusing to reinstate the ban, opening the possibility that the case could advance to the U.S. Supreme Court. On Friday, a federal judge in Virginia also seemed inclined to rule against the administration in a different challenge.

For his part, Trump said Friday that he is considering signing a “brand-new order” while the ban is held up in court.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One as he flew to Florida for the weekend, the president said he expected his administration to win the legal battle over his original directive. But he said the White House also was weighing other alternatives, including making changes to the order, which suspended the nation’s refugee program and barred all entries from seven Muslim-majority countries.

In Virginia, a lawyer for the state asked a judge to impose a preliminary injunction barring the government from enforcing a portion of Trump’s Jan. 27 executive order that bars anyone from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from entering the U.S. for 90 days.

A preliminary injunction would be long-lasting, continuing through the trial in a case. Still, because of the 9th

Circuit’s decision refusing to reinstate the order, the practical effect of any decision in Virginia may be muted for now.

Judge Leonie Brinkema, who was appointed to the federal bench by President Bill Clinton in 1993, did not seem satisfied with answers about the executive order from an administration lawyer.

Brinkema said that the order “clearly has all kinds of weaknesses,” and she asked the government to explain the justification for the ban, saying courts have been “begging” for that explanation. The president can legally suspend the entry of noncitizens into the country when he “finds” that their entry “would be detrimental to the interests of the United States.”

“Finds,” she said, doesn’t mean just “think.”

Virginia’s Solicitor General Stuart Raphael said the government has been unable to answer the charge that the ban was targeted at Muslims.

Brinkema, who did not say when she will rule, said that there was strong evidence that the order is harmful to national security. She quoted from a joint declaration filed in the case by former national security, foreign policy and

intelligence officials, including former secretaries of state Madeline Albright and John Kerry, former Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and former CIA Director and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta.

“In our professional opinion, this Order cannot be justified on national security or foreign policy grounds. It does not perform its declared task of ‘protecting the nation from foreign terrorist entry into the United States,” the declaration states.

The group continued that Trump’s executive order “could do long-term damage to our national security and foreign policy interests.”

A lawyer for the administration, Erez Reuveni, countered that the group is not in the current administration.

But he did not give any additional justification for the order. Instead, Reuveni argued that Virginia does not have the right to challenge the ban and that Brinkema does not have the power to review the president’s executive order.

As for how the government will move forward in the 9th Circuit case, Reuveni said no decisions had been made.

“We may appeal. We may not,” Reuveni said. “All options are being considered.”

Voters flood GOP town halls The ASSOCIATED PRESS GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The voter identified himself as a cancer survivor, and he had something to say to Republican Rep. Justin Amash: “I am scared to death that I will not have health insurance in the future.”

The comment earned 61-year-old retiree Paul Bonis a standing ovation from the crowd packed into a school auditorium in Amash’s Michigan district Thursday night. And the congressman was booed for his response: That the Affordable Care Act has “hurt a lot of people,” and he supports his party’s plans to repeal and replace it, although the GOP still hasn’t united around an alternative.

It’s a scene that’s played out around the country over the past several weeks as Republicans and President Donald Trump have assumed control of Washington and begun moving forward on their long-held promise to undo former President Barack Obama’s health care law. In an echo of the raucous complaints that confronted Democrats back in 2009 as they worked to pass “Obamacare” in the first place, Republicans who want to repeal it now are facing angry pushback of their own at constituent gatherings from Utah to Michigan to Tennessee and elsewhere, even in solidly Republican

districts.

And just as the protests in 2009 focused on health care but reflected broader concerns over an increasingly divisive new president and Democrats’ monopoly control over Washington, now, too, constituent complaints at town hall meetings appear to reflect more general fears about the Trump administration and the implications of one-party GOP rule of the nation’s capital.

In a Salt Lake City suburb Thursday, GOP Rep. Jason Chaffetz faced irate constituents chanting “Do your job!” as they pressed the House Oversight Committee chairman to investigate Trump. Chaffetz struggled to be heard as he faced a litany of sharp questions and screams from a crowd of people who grilled him on everything from Obamacare to his desire to overturn a new national monument in southern Utah.

“Come on, we’re better than this,” Chaffetz protested over the hubbub at one point, practically pleading with the deafening crowd to let him speak.

In Tennessee, GOP Rep. Diane Black faced questions from impassioned and well-informed constituents defending the Affordable Care Act, including one man who told her that he and others with health conditions might die without insurance. “And you want to take

Black argued that the Affordable Care Act has been ineffective because although 20 million people gave gained coverage under the law, millions more have chosen to pay a fine and remain uninsured.

And in southern Wisconsin, GOP Rep. James Sensenbrenner faced a voter who asked him: “Who’s going to be the check and balance on Donald Trump?”

Like others interviewed at town halls around the country, the woman asking the question, Barbara Kresse, said she has not been politically active, another similarity to 2009 when the advent of the Obama administration seemed to cause enough anxiety to awaken groups of voters who had never previously gotten involved.

The recent protests are being amplified by liberal activists modeling their opposition to Trump on the tea party groups that sprang up to oppose Obama and the Democrats. Calling itself “Indivisible,” a nonprofit group that grew out of a how-to guide written by former Democratic congressional staffers has advertised town hall gatherings nationally, suggesting at least some level of coordination, which was the case with the anti-Obamacare protests as well.

Thumbs-up to Bigs in Blue program Thumbs-up: To the Bigs in Blue program. There are 12 Northern Illinois University police officers involved with the program, where they are mentors for DeKalb middle- and high-schoolers through Big Brothers Big Sisters of DeKalb County. Often, the waiting list of local youth waiting for the right “big” can be long, as mentoring young people requires a substantial commitment. We thank the officers from NIU who have decided to make that commitment and hope that some of those they mentor will get some looks at the NIU campus and realize that college is something they can do, too.

Thumbs-down: To the loss of a longtime community member and teacher.

Mary Gunier spent 30 years as a science teacher at Hinckley-Big Rock High School, and “literally bled Hinckley-Big Rock blue.” On Tuesday, Gunier, 66, was killed in a traffic crash east of her home in Leland. Many remembered Gunier as having been kind to students and able to remember their names long after they had left her classroom. She taught parents and their children in the community. We are sad that our community has lost a good person who touched the lives of so many students over the years.

Thumbs-up: To going after people who don’t pay fines. In Sycamore, half of the fines issued by the city in the past six months have not been paid, an outstanding total of more than $28,000, officials said. Almost two-thirds of those unpaid fines are for parking meter violations, which start as $1 tickets but increase by $25, $50 and then $75 after 21, 42 and 64 days, respectively. Now, those who fail to pay the fines will be hearing from a collection agency. The city won’t have to pay any fee to collect on the debts, and those who’ve chosen not to pay them will be reminded of their obligation. The city might want to revisit the wisdom of $1 fines, which can seem so small as to be inconsequential. However, if they’re going to pay people to enforce codes, the citations they issue should be paid.

A carbon tax GOP could support

Some Republicans have grown tired of fighting the rest of the world on climate change.

As economists, religious and military leaders, ordinary Americans and even oil companies have joined the push to lower greenhouse-gas emissions, Republicans have, for the most part, resisted.

But now, a group of conservative economists and former Republican officials are recommending their party reverse course – dramatically. The U.S., they say, should enact a nationwide tax on carbon emissions. It’s a smart idea that deserves support from President Donald Trump and congressional leaders.

The rogue group, which includes James Baker, George Shultz and Henry Paulson, proposes a tax on carbon that would start at about $40 a ton and increase regularly. The idea is to ensure that the cost of climate damage is factored into all activities that emit carbon, whether it’s burning

coal or burning gasoline. That way, the market would encourage carbon producers to find the most efficient ways to cut back. And it would make clean energy, from wind and solar to nuclear, more attractive financially.

This could lead to bigger emissions cuts than were expected from former President Barack Obama’s Clean Power Plan. And a carbon tax has the built-in flexibility to push emissions lower and lower over time.

Countries that already have carbon taxes – or cap and trade systems that effectively set a price on emissions – have demonstrated that they do cut greenhouse gases. And when the taxes are well-designed, they don’t hurt the economy. On the contrary, if the revenue is used to cut other taxes, a carbon tax can boost GDP. The payroll tax is an especially good one to offset, because its burden falls disproportionately on the working poor.

The Republicans now arguing for a carbon tax suggest that the money simply be returned to Americans via tax-free quarterly dividends, which they say would add up to about $2,000 a year for a family of four. That’s another plausible way to keep the tax revenue-neutral and thus adhere to conservative principles of limited government.

All this said, energy-intensive businesses could be expected to take a hit. In enacting any carbon tax, Congress would need to consider job losses and find ways to help the people most affected.

Alas, Trump and conservatives in Congress have already rejected the notion of a carbon tax. Perhaps this collection of eminences can open the Republican mind. As they point out, even if you don’t believe that humans are fully to blame for climate change, a carbon tax is the just the kind of insurance policy everyone needs.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

NYT’s smearing of Team Trump continues Oh, no! I did it again.

It was a foolish mistake. But I slipped.

I read The New York Times.

This is bad for my health, because I get so mad at the smug socialist spin, but how can I not read it? It’s my hometown paper.

My wife wakes me up with indignant questions like, “How can you say government is too big? The Times says ... “ Aargh! Nearly every day brings a new Times outrage.

On Feb. 4, a front-page story smeared Labor secretary nominee Andy Puzder.

The story begins, “Decades before President Trump nominated him ...

Puzder went to battle with federal labor regulators ... “ Wait a second. “Decades before”?

They went back decades to criticize him? Actually, three decades – to 1983, when as a young lawyer, Puzder represented a client whom the Labor Department accused of squandering union money.

The Times went on to say: “He has repeatedly argued that economic regulations stifle economic growth.”

Puzder “argued” that? Regulations obviously stifle growth. That’s their purpose – to protect workers by putting

Regulation is a big reason this post-recession recovery has been so weak.

In only the past 10 years, the department added regulations that require another 70 million hours of paperwork.

Monday: “Trump’s FDA Pick Could Undo Decades of Drug Safeguards.”

Oh, no! Trump will poison America with unsafe drugs!

Trump hasn’t actually made his FDA pick yet, but the Times worries “his push for deregulation might put consumers at risk.”

The reporter cites thalidomide, which, 60 years ago, “caused severe birth defects in babies whose mothers had taken the drug in pregnancy. Since then, the FDA has come to be viewed as the world’s leading watchdog for protecting the safety of food and drugs, a gold standard ... .”

Fool’s gold. The FDA protected American babies from thalidomide not by being smart, but by being so slow. By the time thalidomide neared approval, its bad effects were visible in Europe.

The Times eagerly reports damage done by drugs: “Drug safety watchdogs point to examples like the painkiller Vioxx, which was withdrawn from the market ... .”

But “invoking Vioxx as the icon for such looseness is itself ignorant looseness,” says my medical researcher brother, Tom. “FDA approvals are tradeoffs between benefits and risks.

The FDA knew about Vioxx’s risks. It was the company, not the FDA, that withdrew the painkiller. Many doctors now say it was an ill-advised move that deprives patients of a good alternative. Vioxx’s risks are no greater than painkillers like Motrin sold over the counter.”

The Times avoids detailing just how onerous today’s regulation is.

The reporter says, “The agency sets a 10-month goal for approving standard drugs.”

Gee, goals are nice, but does the agency honor them? The Times doesn’t say. It also doesn’t mention that the 10-month goal only applies to the final step of regulation – after all trials are done. The entire process takes an average 16 years and $2.6 billion.

Americans want protection from bad drugs, but how many of us suffer needless pain, or die, while waiting those 16 years? How many die because

a drug’s developers cannot raise $2.6 billion?

One more smear: “President Trump’s pick to lead the Federal Communications Commission, Ajit Pai, has aggressively moved to roll back consumer protection regulations.”

Consumer protection? No. Socialist idiocy.

The Times said Pai “stopped nine companies from providing discounted high-speed internet service to low-income individuals.”

No, he stopped a $9.25 a month government subsidy for high-speed internet.

“He withdrew an effort to keep prison phone rates down,” said the Times.

No, he stopped FCC lawyers from fighting about in-state phone calls because the FCC has no constitutional authority there.

Utterly reasonable. But the Times quotes an advocacy group saying, “Chairman Pai is showing his true stripes ... (doing) favors for the powerful corporations.”

Please. Someone. Tell The New York Times that socialism was tried. It doesn’t work.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Wind turbines help environment, landscape

To the Editor: After reading Paul Ballard’s letter to the editor (“Wind turbines harm environment, landscape,” page 17, Feb. 4), I wanted to bring up some facts concerning wind turbines and their uses.

According to Wendy Koch of USA Today, “Wind turbines kill far fewer birds in North America than do cats or collisions with cell towers. Granted, wind turbines kill between 214,000 and 368,000 birds annually, however, that is a small fraction compared with the estimated 6.8 million fatalities from collisions with cell and radio towers, and the 1.4 billion to 3.7 billion deaths from cats (this according to the peer-reviewed study by two federal scientists and the environmental consulting firm West, Inc.).

Many environmentalists say wind power ultimately benefits birds. It is “a growing

solution to some of the more serious threats that birds face, since wind energy emits no greenhouse gases that accelerate climate change.” This from Terry Root of Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment.

A National Audubon Society report stated that hundreds of bird species in the U.S., including the bald eagle and eight state birds from Idaho to Maryland are at “serious risk” because of climate change, which wind turbines can help reduce.

As far as “these turbines turning the landscape into an ugly display,” that is a personal opinion, to which we are all entitled. Some people see the big windmills as relaxing as they slowly rotate, and feel good that they are helping to lower energy bills (nearly 8 percent from a Department of Energy study) and helping control climate.

Just some thoughts and facts.

Knights rachet up defense Limit Stallworth; avenge December loss

jseverson@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Earlier in the season, Sycamore center Keyshawn Stallworth torched the Kaneland boys basketball team.

In the rematch, the Knights kept Stallworth and the Spartans’ offense in check in a 51-35 victory Friday night at Kaneland High School.

“I think we did a better job on their personnel,” Kaneland coach Joe Conroy said. “My assistant coaches did a great job scouting. When we’re able to hold guys below their scoring average and not let somebody go off for 30-something points in a game, I think that’s huge.”

In the first game between the two teams this season – a 67-53 win for Sycamore on Dec. 16 – Stallworth erupted for 37 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks. On Friday, he was held to five points and four rebounds on 2-for-3 shooting.

“They played more zone; last time they played man,” Sycamore coach Ryan Picolotti said of the Kaneland defense, which regularly switched between zone and man-to-man Friday. “They did a good job

of taking him away in zone and in man. They were more aggressive down there in the post.”

The Knights (7-18 overall, 2-6 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) were efficient on offense, shooting 17 for 33 (51.5 percent) from the field. Kaneland senior forward Dan Franck scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds and shot 6 for 10 from the floor – including making his first five attempts. The Knights led wire to wire thanks to Franck opening the game with a layup and a jumper in just more than a minute.

“We’re sick of losing,” Franck said. “We wanted payback. They beat us by double-digits last time. It’s a conference game. It’s a Friday night. We just wanted this one.”

The Spartans (10-13, 3-8 NI Big 12 East) struggled offensively early, scoring only 20 points through the first three quarters. They finished shooting 16 for 37 (43.2 percent) from the field.

Senior guards Jordan Tolzin (5 for 6) and Jack Mizgalski (5 for 9) each scored 12 points for the Spartans.

For Sycamore, Ty Sulaver had four points, Payton Picolotti added three and Justin Pottorff made a 3-pointer at the final buzzer.

Beyond the stats: The Knights held Sycamore scoreless for a stretch of 8 minutes, 32 seconds. Tolzin made a layup for Sycamore to cut Kaneland’s lead to 25-13 with 3:40 left in the second, and the Spartans didn’t score again until Tolzin made a 3-pointer to make it 32-16 with 3:08 left in the third.

They said it: “I think we’re a team that people don’t realize, we’ve been close in a lot of games,” Conroy said. “We’re really young and haven’t been able to figure out how to get over the hump, and I think our defensive schemes that we’re doing are helping us to stay more competitive throughout the game.”

Up next: The Spartans welcome Yorkville on Tuesday; Morris visits the Knights on Tuesday.

sports@daily-chronicle.com Sycamore 170-pound wrestler Artimus Cunningham upset Sterling’s Tyson Hall in the quarterfinals Friday in the Class 2A Sterling Sectional, earning a spot in today’s semifinal.

Cunningham will face Jake Lanning (38-0) of Pontiac in the semifinals after Lanning had a 2-1 win over his foe from Sterling.

Trevor Boryla (106) and Justin Montani (113) also reached the semifinals for the Spartans.

For Kaneland, Nathan Orosco (106), Austin Kedzie (120), Hayden Patterson (170), Riley Vanik (182) and Colin Guss-

man (220) all reached the semifinals.

Lopez into Barrington semis: DeKalb freshman 120-pounder Fabian Lopez reached the semifinals of the Class 3A Barrington Sectional, the lone Barb still in the championship bracket.

The other seven Barbs remain alive through the wrestlebacks, with Cobe Schmerbach (160) and Ethan Engelson (220) reaching the championship quarterfinals before losing.

Lopez will face Libertyville’s Drew Onufer in the semifinals today.

Cogs all in wrestlebacks: G e noa-Kingston couldn’t get a wrestler through to the championship semifinals at the Class 1A Byron Sectional.

BOYS BASKETBALL Guerra enters 1,000-point club: Indian

Creek senior Trevor Guerra became the fourth player in school history to crack the 1,000-point club as the Timberwolves cruised past Serena, 68-47, in Serena.

Guerra finished with six points and has 1,005 in his career.

Indian Creek was led by Kevin Jordal, who scored 12 points. The Timberwolves (20-5) had nine players score five to nine points in the win.

DeKalb win at Morris: The Barbs snapped a two-game losing skid in a big way, blowing out Morris, 54-22.

DeKalb (15-9, 7-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) went on a 23-7 run in the third quarter.

Cole Tucker finished with a teamhigh 14 points, Michael Mitchell made three 3-pointers and had 10 points, DeMonte Blalock had eight and Mikey Vilet had seven.

Cornerstone wins a thriller: Trevor Winsler had a monster game, and Cornerstone Christian Academy won, 87-84, at home over Schaumburg Christian in double overtime.

Winsler finished with a team-high 36 points and 20 rebounds, Aidan Isaacs had 35 points and made six 3-pointers and William Plant added nine assists.

Miller missed the first three quarters with a knee injury suffered two games ago at Winnebago. He played against Byron, but tweaked it late.

“The plan was not to play him at all tonight and try to pull through as a team and get a ‘W,’ ” Jenkins said.

“We thought we needed some kind of a spark in the fourth quarter, and I thought he certainly did that.”

McNeal finished with 32 points and nine rebounds, both game highs.

“Zach’s throwing in 17 points a game, so someone had to step up and make that up,” Jenkins said. “We were hoping it was more of a collective effort in making up those points, but Justin had a nice night.”

After the Cogs needed 2:17 to build a 7-0 lead, the Dukes took their first lead midway through the second quarter, 20-19. The Cogs built their lead back up to as much as five, but Dixon grabbed it back late in the third and led as much as 48-42.

Bailey and Derian Duncan both have been battling the flu and came off the bench for the Dukes.

“He’s playing some really, really high-level basketball right now,” Ora-

ham said of Bailey. “I worked with him after school today, went over a couple things, and he did a [heck] of a job.”

The loss knocked the Cogs from the top spot in BNC standings to third with two conference games remaining.

“We just use this, learn from this going forward into regionals,” Jenkins said. “The goal now becomes a regional title.”

By the numbers: Each team had one other player in double figures with 11 points – Bailey Foley for the Cogs and Whitcombe for the Dukes. McNeal finished the game 11 of 23 from the floor and 8 of 9 from the line. He also had three steals.

Beyond the stats: Miller didn’t score, but he did have a steal that led to a McNeal layup in the middle of a 13-6 run.

G-K’s last lead came at the end of that run, 55-54, with 3:01 left.

They said it: “That injury to Miller is hurting us. Not only him, but us,” Jenkins said. “He’s such an athletic player, and you take him away from us, that hurts us offensively.”

Up next: The Cogs head to Rock Falls on Tuesday, while the Dukes welcome Rockford Lutheran on Tuesday.

GENOA – Justin McNeal wasn’t missing much for the Genoa-Kingston boys basketball team Friday night in a 32-point performance, but he missed a layup on the inbound pass in the closing seconds that would have tied the score.

A few seconds later, Zach Miller – battling through a knee injury – missed a runner in the lane, again off an inbound pass, and Dixon held on for a 62-60 Big Northern Conference road win at Genoa-Kingston High School.

“We thought we had two pretty good plays drawn up, but we just missed a pair of layups,” Cogs coach Corey Jenkins said.

The Cogs (15-10, 6-2 BNC) scored the first seven points of the game, but trailed by as much as six in the fourth quarter. They were down, 60-56, with a minute left after Dixon (14-11, 5-3) scored on a layup by Beau Bailey, who finished with 31 points.

McNeal answered with a layup with 53.4 seconds left, then forced Bailey to step out of bounds on Dixon’s ensuing

possession. McNeal then got to the line, making a pair of free throws to tie the score with 34.6 seconds left.

David Whitcombe answered with a two free throws for the Dukes to retake the lead with 14.9 seconds left, setting off an action-filled ending. McNeal missed a shot under the rim, but in the scrum for the rebound, Whitcombe was called for a travel on the rebound.

The Cogs took possession under the basket and fed the ball to McNeal, who couldn’t connect.

But the rebound went off Adam Blackburn, and the Cogs got the ball back under the backboard again, and this time the pass went to Miller, who was missed his floater in the lane with one second left.

The Dukes turned the ball over on the inbound pass, but the three-quarter court heave from the Cogs didn’t connect and Dixon held on.

“I thought we did a good job of rebounding near the end,” Dixon coach Nick Oraham said. “Tough travel call on David near the end, but he made two big free throws for us and had another big layup. Probably played his best game of the year.”

Kane becomes top American goal-scorer in franchise history The ASSOCIATED PRESS

WINNIPEG, Manitoba – Linemates Patrick Kane, Artem Anisimov and Artemi Panarin each scored and combined for seven points to help the Blackhawks beat the Winnipeg Jets, 5-2, Friday night.

Duncan Keith’s late goal was the winner, and Marian Hossa also scored.

Patrick Kane The goaltenders were busy in the fifth and final meeting of the season between the Central Division rivals. Corey Crawford made 28 saves in his 22nd victory of the season, and Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck stopped 31 of the 34 shots he faced.

Bryan Little and Adam Lowry scored for Winnipeg.

Kane opened the scoring at 15:37 of the opening period with his 18th of the season, firing a one-timer off Panarin’s long cross-ice feed to beat Hellebuyck low to the glove side.

The goal was Kane’s 269th, moving him past Tony Amonte for the most goals by an American in Hawks history, and into sixth on the overall franchise list.

Little found the equalizer for Winnipeg at 1:43 of the second, quickly grabbing a net-side rebound off a Tobias Enstrom point shot.

Anisimov scored late in the second. Kane set up Panarin for a one-timer, and Anisimov buried the rebound, moving him into a brief tie with Hossa for the team lead in goals at 19.

Keith added his goal with less than three minutes remaining, scoring his fifth of the season on a point-blast to make it 3-1. Hossa moved back into the team goal lead with a short-handed empty-netter, and Panarin added another into an empty net to ice it with 16 seconds left.

Note: Coming into the game, Winnipeg had been 4-0-0 against the Hawks this season, winning by a combined score of 14-5.

This week, the Jets have lost their past two games at home against Central Division opponents, having previously been 6-0-0.

Alex Kube left a legacy as a top-flight athlete and sports trainer, along with one as a person who enjoyed life and wanted others to do the same.

Kube, a 2006 Cary-Grove graduate, died at 11:50 p.m.

Wednesday at Rockford’s Mercyhealth Rockton Avenue Hospital. Winnebago County coroner Alex Kube Bill Hintz performed an autopsy Thursday but said the preliminary cause of death will need further studies.

A representative from the coroner’s office said Friday toxicology reports usually take about two weeks to get results.

Kube, 29, was a star football player at C-G and the 2005 Northwest Herald Football Player of the Year. He became

the first freshman in 31 years to lead Northern Illinois’s defense in tackles and had a successful career with the Huskies.

After graduating from NIU, Kube had NFL tryouts with the Bears and Minnesota Vikings.

He then started his own business, Elite 7, which trained young athletes and was highly regarded by local athletes for helping them reach their goals.

Kube was a standout running back and safety on C-G’s teams in 2004 and 2005. In 2004, the Trojans were Class 7A state runners-up to Libertyville.

“It wasn’t just his ability to play, he was such a great teammate to everybody and a hard worker,” former Trojans coach Bruce Kay said. “He was very serious about football and what he was doing. He was one of our big building blocks for the program. He was a difference-maker.”

Sox begin move in new direction

Kick off rebuild after 4 straight losing seasons

CHICAGO – No more quick fixes for the White Sox: The overhaul is underway.

The Sox made their intentions clear with two huge moves at the winter meetings, and they come to spring training stocked with new, young players and a huge task still in front of them.

“We know we’re closer to the beginning of this process than we are to the end,” general manager Rick Hahn said.

“And we know there’s going to be some difficult days ahead in the short term.

Virtually every Sox fan I’ve had a conversation with understands that and is eagerly embracing this and looking forward to when we start to see the fruits of this labor. And they know there’s going to be hardship in the short term.”

As the crosstown Cubs attempt to

defend their first World Series championship in 108 years, a rebuild is in full swing on the South Side after four straight losing seasons.

The Sox traded ace Chris Sale to Boston and outfielder Adam Eaton to Washington at the winter meetings. They acquired two of baseball’s top prospects in return, getting second baseman Yoan Moncada from the Red Sox and righthander Lucas Giolito Rick Renteria from the Nationals.

The Sox also have a new manager in Rick Renteria after going 78-84. He got promoted from bench coach to replace Robin Ventura.

Here are some things to look for, starting with the first workout for pitchers and catchers Tuesday:

NEW LOOK

New faces aside, the biggest change for the Sox is their approach. They tried to compete in recent years by bringing in high-profile players such as Adam Dunn and Jeff Samardzija.

But no more. With one playoff appearance since the 2005 championship sea-

son, they’re going in a different direction. Jose Quintana could join Sale and Eaton on the other side of the exit door.

He made his first All-Star team while setting career-bests in wins (13) and ERA (3.20) last season. Third baseman Todd Frazier and closer David Robertson might not be around much longer, either.

ROOKIES TO WATCH

All eyes this spring will be on Moncada and Giolito, not to mention hard-throwing right-hander Reynaldo Lopez. Acquired in the Eaton deal, he pitched in 11 games for Washington last season and made the playoff roster.

THEY’RE SET

One of the few positives for the Sox last season was the emergence of shortstop Tim Anderson. A top prospect, he hit .283 and showed range in the field. If the plan unfolds the way the Sox hope, he will form a dynamic tandem with Moncada. The Sox also have a powerful presence at first base assuming they keep Jose Abreu. The Cuban slugger hit .293 with 25 homers and 100 RBIs after a slow start last season. Although his numbers have declined a bit since

his 2014 AL Rookie of the Year season, that’s not a bad line. Abreu also could mentor Moncada, his countryman.

THEY’RE NOT

The Sox are rebuilding for a reason.

The Sale and Eaton trades were just the start for a team that has no shortage of holes. If Quintana is next in line to be dealt, Frazier might not be far behind him. Coming off a 40-homer season, he has an expiring contract. Moving Frazier could create room at third base for young and unproven players such as Matt Davidson, Trey Michalczewski, Nick Delmonico and Zach Remillard.

ON DECK

Although the young players figure to get plenty of attention, keep an eye on the dugout, too. After all, Renteria will be an important component in their development. Known for his positive approach, Renteria drew praise for his work with the Cubs’ young core in 2014 and would have been back for a second season as their manager had Joe Maddon not become available.

Renteria now gets another opportunity to manage in Chicago, albeit on the South Side.

In a landmark study, infants at high risk of developing a peanut allergy were divided into two groups.

One group was given a snack that contained peanuts starting between the ages of 4 and 11 months, and until they turned 5. The children in the other group avoided peanuts. At the end of the study, the children who ate peanuts were more than 80 percent less likely to have a peanut allergy than those whose diet was peanut-free.

The upshot is that the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has issued new guidelines.

The institute now proposes that children who are at risk of a peanut allergy can eat products that contain peanuts beginning when they are between 4 and 6 months of age. But – and this is crucial – only after they have been first tested to make sure they don’t already have a peanut allergy.

Dear Doctor: When it’s our turn to bring team snacks to the kids’ weekend soccer games, the most challenging part is accommodating so many allergies, especially to peanuts.

Is it true that there’s now a way to keep children from getting a peanut allergy in the first place?

Dear Reader: Food allergies among kids are a fact of life. In fact, the number of children who are allergic to one or more foods has increased by close to 50 percent in recent years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food allergies affect 6 percent of American children.

An allergy occurs when the immune system flags a certain food as harmful, which sets off a physical reaction to that food.

The most common triggers are milk, eggs, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish, tree nuts and, as you point out, peanuts. Children with siblings who have a food allergy, or who have eczema or asthma, are at higher risk of developing a food allergy.

For a child with an allergy, even a trace of the problem food can cause reactions that range from mild to severe.

These include hives, rash, stomach and digestive upset, headache, nasal congestion, itchy eyes and breathing problems. In some cases, reactions can be so extreme as to be life-threatening.

The reasons for the recent surge in food allergies aren’t entirely clear. But several new studies into peanut allergies in children have both overturned accepted wisdom and offered parents new hope.

In the past, parents had been told to avoid feeding peanuts, or anything containing peanuts, to children at risk of developing an allergy until they reached the age of 3. But some researchers ques-

I have trouble talking to others, which makes things harder. Every day is the same: Get up, go to a long day of school, come home, do homework, play video games, draw, go to bed. The weekends aren’t much better. My family never does anything, we never go anywhere. I don’t have friends (the one I’d consider hanging out with is always busy), and at 15, I can’t drive anywhere, get a job or do anything on my own for another year. There are times at the bridge table when you feel as though you must get out from under your own feet. In this deal, for example, South is in four spades. West leads the heart ace and continues with the heart king. Everything looks so easy, but what must declarer do?

North made a support double over West’s two-heart intervention, which showed exactly three-card spade support, but did not define his point-count. South, with an opening bid of his own, jumped to game, trusting that North would bid more in the unlikely event that he had extra values, and West had made a very weak vulnerable overcall.

The contract looked easy, with South apparently having 10 winners via five spades and five clubs. But after ruffing the heart king, cashing his spade ace and playing a spade to dummy’s king, East’s diamond discard was a blow.

South paused, then saw the solution. He cashed two top clubs, then finished removing West’s trumps, and declarer, on the fourth round of spades, ditched dummy’s last club.

South took three more tricks with his remaining high clubs to make his contract.

Finally, note that if East had bravely raised hearts, despite zero points and being vulnerable, West might have taken the push to five hearts, knowing that East was very short in spades. Five hearts doubled goes down two, or perhaps only one if North does not lead a trump very early in the defense to cut down those spade ruffs.
