our remaining time on Earth

My column last week asking how people would spend the last months of their life, if they were still in good health, generated more responses than I can possibly fit into another column. So I selected three of them as representative of different viewpoints. The last one is uplifting in that he looked up the life expectancy for a male at my specific age and I could have 10 more years to go.

This response came from Bruce Ladd, Northern Illinois University Class of 1958: “My thoughts at life’s end are not to spend any significant money, travel the world, nor focus on my hobby or particular wants.

“My inclination is to solidify and improve my relationships with my family members, friends, community acquaintances, and fellow churchgoers.

“I also want to get my possessions and archives in order so that my widow and kids will not be flummoxed by this challenge.

But, perhaps most important, I want to make every effort to effectively manage my health conditions so that I can stay in this wonderful world for as long as He will let me.”

The next response is from Carla Vanatta of Genoa: “If I were given eight months to live, I think first I would thank God that I had some time left and wasn’t taken suddenly, although the quality of life may be difficult during that gift of time. I think I would spend as much time and energy as possible in nature, soaking up its beauty and wonder and strength.

“I would make family my first priority and savor the time I had left to cherish my husband, sons, and grandchildren.

“I would try to make amends for any I have

“I would prepare letters of encouragement and love for my family to be opened the next few years. Thanks be to God!” Finally, this informative and upbeat letter came from Avi Bass, a retired NIU journalism professor: “You wrote last week that you have eight more months to live since you are 76 because ‘the average man’s life expectancy’ is 76.8 years. That number is the average span for all lives from newborn to centenarian. A better number for your years-to-go is in the [Centers for Disease Control] life table for males at specific ages. Your ‘expectation of life’ at the age of 76 is 10.4 years. Much better.”

I am grateful that several readers took the time to contemplate this issue, including those who shared their thoughts with me at church, while eating at a restaurant and even while on the walking track at the YMCA.

TODAY’S TALKER ARMY DRONE THAT VANISHED ON ARIZONA FLIGHT FOUND IN COLORADO

DENVER – An Army drone that disappeared on a training flight in southern Arizona has been found about 600 miles away in Colorado, and the military is trying to figure out how it got there.

Officials at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, said a hiker found the $1.5 million Shadow drone stuck in a tree in the mountains west of Denver on Thursday. It was missing a wing.

Soldiers lost contact with the drone at Fort Huachuca nine days earlier. A search failed to find it, and the Army concluded it probably crashed and disintegrated in the area.

Officials said the 450-pound drone has a 20foot wingspan and can fly for eight or nine hours.

Soldiers from Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state had gone to the Arizona post to train with the aircraft.

Northwestern Medicine execs discuss $46.4M fitness center plan

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Hospital leaders laid out more details at back-to-back public hearings Thursday on a proposal to build a $46.4 million health and fitness center on the Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital campus between DeKalb and Sycamore.

Hospital officials first spoke at a public hearing before the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board and later at a hearing for the DeKalb County Planning, Zoning and Building Department. At the hearings, two residents raised concerns about how the health and fitness center would affect the adjacent Kishwaukee Family YMCA, neighboring properties and traffic in both DeKalb and Sycamore. A local trade group publicly backed the construction project and the jobs it would create.

Northwestern Medicine wants to build a 111,105-square-foot health and fitness center on vacant land. Northwestern’s proposal calls for a two-story building at 626 E. Bethany Road on the hospital campus.

At the state review board hearing, hospital leaders emphasized the health benefits of the proposed center.

“With the development of population health management, a key component of the health care reform, our role has expanded beyond caring for people just when they are hurt or sick, but taking a proactive role in keeping people well,” said Dr. Michael Kulisz, chief medical officer for Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee and Valley West hospitals. “ ... As a health system, we recognize that in order to be a relevant resource to patients in their total health, we have to address their needs beyond traditional doctor and patient interactions.”

Two residents who attended both public hearings had questions about the hospital’s plans.

“Can DeKalb afford another nonprofit, nontaxable fitness center built right next door to our current YMCA building, where residents young and old currently enjoy affordable programs regularly?” DeKalb resident William O’Neill said.

O’Neill asked about how the project would affect traffic and drainage in the area. He further suggested the nonprofit hospital should voluntarily agree to pay a portion of public ser-

As a nonprofit, some of the hospital’s buildings are exempt from paying property taxes.

Barry Schrader, a DeKalb resident, also suggested the hospital pay some type of impact fee. However, he suggested the fees go to offset revenue the Kishwaukee Family YMCA stands to lose when a new health center with similar facilities is built next door. He said a 2013 consultant’s report showed that the YMCA stood to lose $292,000 in the first year the hospital fitness center opened. Projections in the report indicated the Y, which also is a nonprofit organization, could see 5 percent of its members switch to the hospital health and fitness center. Schrader said that figure was too conservative.

No one from the YMCA attended the hearings. Kishwaukee Family YMCA CEO Mark Spiegelhoff previously said the organization had known about the hospital’s plans for years and was prepared for some members to move to

the newer facility.

Matt Swanson, president of the DeKalb County Building and Construction Trades Council, said the $46.4 million project would serve as an “economic stimulus” by providing needed jobs for the group’s members.

At the second public hearing, the hospital was seeking a variance from DeKalb County zoning requirements.

The proposed building is more than five times the maximum building size of 20,000 square feet allowed in the county’s Business Conservation District.

Charles Cloutier, the hospital’s director of planning and construction, said that type of zoning ordinance was designed to push large businesses into incorporated areas. However, he said that 40 years ago when Kishwaukee Hospital was formed by the merger of two local hospitals, leaders purposely decided to move to the unincorporated DeKalb County location outside of boundaries of both Sycamore and the

city of DeKalb.

“They made an intentional and deliberate decision to not be located in the city of Sycamore or the city of DeKalb, so they would not be appearing to show favoritism,” he said. “That was a very thoughtful decision; unfortunately, it occasionally puts us in an unorthodox position that we run a very large operation in an unincorporated area.”

Cloutier also pointed out that a variance had been previously granted when the 250,000-square-foot hospital was built. Three hundred twenty parking spots are planned for the health and fitness center, he said.

County Hearing Officer Dale Clark will make his decision on the zoning issue in writing. At Thursday’s hearing, he didn’t give a specific date as to when that would be done.

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board is scheduled to consider the hospital’s plans at its March 14 meeting in Bolingbrook.

Sycamore considers adding fee to water bills $5 increase would go toward radium removal

SYCAMORE – Sycamore residents could see a $5 radium treatment fee added to their water bill starting in May under a budget proposal brought to the City Council this week.

City Manager Brian Gregory said the city is nearing the end of its 10year contract for radium removal, and the costs are set to more than double in August from about $310,000 to $647,000 annually.

Meanwhile, one of the city’s wells has exceeded the national standard for acceptable radium levels and has been shut down as officials consider the most cost-effective treatment method.

Mayor Ken Mundy said the city does not have an option when it comes to treating its water for chemicals.

Treating the water for radium is required by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. National standards for the maximum radium contamination level are very strict – 5 picocuries per liter of water. A picocurie is a measure of radioactivity equal to the that of one-trillionth of a gram of radium.

changes of the filtration media during the city’s contract with Water Remediation Technology LLC, Gregory said.

Gregory said separating the radium treatment cost on the utility bill will allow for transparency and reassure people that the city is meeting EPA standards.

“It think it’s important that we do, on the bill itself, state that there is a radium treatment fee rather than just absorbing it in operations,” Gregory said. “First, to show people that there is a cost to it, and secondly, to make sure it’s reinforced that we are doing that.”

needed to continue effective radium treatment in the future, but the current fee structure will not be able to support them, according to the proposal.

Improvements include putting well No.7 back in use, providing maintenance and repainting the water tower near the intersection of Park Avenue and Becker Place, and starting a water meter replacement program.

Gregory said these capital improvements have been deferred for the past five years so that radium treatment costs could be absorbed by reserves and operating funds. “[The fee] would generate enough funds for [fiscal 2018] to satisfy a radium treatment,” he said. “It would also free up funds so we could, first and foremost, start to bring well No.7 back online, and then as soon as that is completed, we would move on to water tower No. 1.”

The fee would be applied based on water meter size. The average residence and small business with meters measuring five-eighths or threefourths of an inch would pay $5 per month.

MALTA – Overall enrollment is down about 6.7 percent at Kishwaukee College compared with the previous spring semester, continuing a downward trend that can be contributed in part to a lack of state funding, officials said.

As of the 10th class day for the spring 2017 semester, Kishwaukee College has 3,130 students enrolled, according to data provided by the college.

This is a decrease of 225 students from the 3,355 students enrolled in the spring 2016 semester.

Collectively, students are signed up for 29,226 credit hours in spring 2017, according to the data.

President Laurie Borowicz said in a statement that the number of credit hours has declined more significantly than the overall headcount, so officials believe students are taking fewer hours and working more than in the past.

SPRINGFIELD – Democratic lawmakers from Chicago have proposed legislation to make former President Barack Obama’s birthday a state holiday.

Three bills have been introduced that would all make Obama’s birthday, Aug. 4, an official holiday.

The two bills in the House, proposed

by Democratic Reps. Andre Thapedi and Sonya Harper, would make Aug. 4 a “legal holiday,” during which state government offices would shut down, and schools and businesses would have the option of closing.

No agreement on who writes school funding plan

SPRINGFIELD – When it comes to the complex, politically prickly topic of overhauling public school funding in Illinois, lawmakers and Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office can’t even agree on who should take the first step.

Democrats who run the Senate Education Committee told Rauner’s education adviser Thursday that the Republican governor should draft legislation to reflect recommendations from a school funding report released last week. The adviser, Beth Purvis, countered that the plan should come from the Legislature.

The two sides agree that the formula for financing public education should be changed to ensure poorer districts receive more financial support from the state. The recommendations, which come from a commission created by the governor, said that Illinois must assess how it supports schools on a district-by-district basis but didn’t indicate how legislators could accomplish this.

Sen. Andy Manar, a Bunker Hill Democrat and commission member, suggested the governor’s office should translate the findings into legislation.

“How do we make sure that this report doesn’t just get plopped on the heaping pile of reports that are somewhere in the basement of this building?” he said.

Purvis responded that writing legislation is “usually the job of the General Assembly” and explained Rauner would use the commission’s report to assess any education funding proposals that cross his desk.

Service providers file 2nd lawsuit demanding pay

SPRINGFIELD – A group of agencies and businesses that provides services to state government has opened a second front in the legal fight to get Illinois to pay billions in back-due bills.

The Pay Now Illinois coalition filed a lawsuit Thursday in St. Clair County demanding that state officials pay bills dating to July. An $11 billion pile of overdue bills has grown with a nearly two-year long budget stalemate. The Pay Now coalition includes providers of health care, housing for the homeless, sex abuse counseling and more.

Its organizers say the state should honor contracts with the agencies.

The county court is the same court that ruled in 2015 that state employees should

get paid even without a state budget.

The coalition filed a similar lawsuit in Cook County last year.

Ind. governor grants pardon that Pence didn’t act upon

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana’s new governor Thursday pardoned a Chicago man whose request languished under thenGov. Mike Pence despite evidence the man was wrongly sent to prison for an armed robbery conviction.

Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb said he decided to pardon 49-year-old Keith Cooper because he believed Cooper had been wrongly convicted of the 1996 robbery in Elkhart, Indiana. Holcomb cited the state parole board’s support for the pardon, along with the backing of the prosecutor and witnesses in the case.

“I personally believe that Mr. Cooper has waited long enough and need not endure any further uncertainty,” Holcomb said.

Cooper’s pardon request, which the Indiana Parole Board recommended be approved in 2014, received renewed attention after Pence became Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate last summer.

Cooper was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the robbery during which a teenager was shot in the stomach, but advances in DNA testing and a nationwide offender database excluded Cooper as the

year, there were some concerns, honoring a sitting president. Now that he’s no longer a sitting president, it’s even more appropriate.”

When Thapedi’s bill was being considered last year, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration filed papers saying the bill would cost the state $3.2 million in salary for workers to have the day off.

The administration also argued that Illinois would “lose $16 million in productivity from state workers having a paid, nonworking holiday.”

Thapedi said those numbers are overstated.

Collins said that she hopes Republicans can appreciate Obama’s achievements.

“I hope we don’t descend to what we see at the federal level,” Collins said.

“As a Democrat, I have no problem honoring President Lincoln. There should be reciprocity between parties, Obama belongs to Illinois, and Illinois belongs to all people, Republicans and Democrats.”

Amtrak officer wounds man near Chicago’s Union Station

CHICAGO – Authorities said an Amtrak police officer shot and wounded a 25-year-old man near Union Station in Chicago.

The shooting happened Wednesday night as the officer was on routine patrol. Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in an email Thursday morning that the man was taken to a hospital in serious condition with a wound to his left shoulder.

The officer wasn’t injured. Details about what led to the shooting and the names of those involved weren’t immediately released. Guglielmi said the wounded man was found with cash and narcotics.

Amtrak released a statement confirming that the officer was involved in the shooting and noting that Chicago police are investigating.

Court won’t reinstate Trump’s travel ban

SAN FRANCISCO – A federal appeals court refused Thursday to reinstate President Donald Trump’s ban on travelers from seven predominantly Muslim nations, unanimously rejecting the administration’s claim of presidential authority, questioning its motives and concluding that the order was unlikely to survive legal challenges.

The three judges of the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the argument that the ban targets Muslims raised “serious allegations” and presented “significant constitutional questions,” and they agreed that courts could consider statements by Trump and his advisers about wishing to enact such a ban.

Moments after the ruling, Trump tweeted, “SEE YOU IN COURT,” adding that “THE SECURITY OF OUR NATION IS AT STAKE!” In response, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, a Democrat who leads one of the states that challenged the ban, said: “Mr. President, we just saw you in court, and we beat you.”

The panel declined to block a lower-court ruling that suspended the ban and allowed previously barred travelers to enter the U.S. But it did not shy away from the larger constitutional questions raised by the order.

The judges sided with the states on every issue except for one technical matter. They rejected the administration’s argument that courts did not have the authority to review the president’s immigration and national security decisions. They said the administration failed to show that the order met constitutional requirements to provide notice or a hearing before restricting travel. And they said the

The court battle is far from over. The lower court still must debate the merits of the ban, and an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court seems likely.

That could put the decision in the hands of a divided court that has a vacancy. Trump’s nominee, Neil Gorsuch, cannot be confirmed in time to take part in any consideration of the ban.

The appellate judges noted compelling public interests on both sides.

“On the one hand, the public has a powerful interest in national security and in the ability of an elected president to enact policies. And on the other, the public also has an interest in free flow of travel, in avoiding separation of

families, and in freedom from discrimination.”

The Justice Department said that it was “reviewing the decision and considering its options.” It’s the first day on the job for new Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who was sworn in at the White House earlier Thursday by Vice President Mike Pence.

Last week, U.S. District Judge James Robart in Seattle issued a temporary restraining order halting the ban after Washington state and Minnesota sued. The ban temporarily suspended the nation’s refugee program and immigration from countries that have raised terrorism concerns.

Justice Department lawyers appealed to the 9th Circuit, arguing that the president has the constitutional power to restrict entry to the United States and that the courts cannot second-guess his determination that such a step was needed to prevent terrorism.

The states said Trump’s travel ban harmed individuals, businesses and universities. Citing Trump’s campaign promise to stop Muslims from entering the U.S., they said the ban unconstitutionally blocked entry to people based on religion.

Conway ‘counseled’ after brand promotion

WASHINGTON – The White House has “counseled” a top aide to President Donald Trump after she promoted Ivanka Trump’s fashion line during a national cable TV appearance from the White House.

But House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz said that’s not enough, calling what Kellyanne Conway did “wrong, wrong, wrong, clearly over the line, unacceptable.”

The Utah Republican congressman and Democratic Oversight Leader Elijah Cummings jointly asked the Office of Government Ethics to review the matter.

Chaffetz also said he will write a formal letter to the White House lodging his irritation. He said White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s remark Thursday that Conway has been “counseled” doesn’t go far enough.

“It needs to be dealt with,” he said in an interview with The Associated Press. It’s the first time during the young administration that Chaffetz has questioned an ethical matter.

The White House said later Thursday that Trump “absolutely” continues to support Conway. In response to questions from The Associated Press, the White House said Trump didn’t see Conway’s interview on Fox News. But

a spokeswoman said Trump “understands she was merely sticking up for a wonderful woman who she has great respect for and felt was treated unfairly.”

In an interview later Thursday evening on Fox, Conway declined to discuss the case but said she had spoken with Trump and “he supports me 100

percent.”

The ethics dustup began Wednesday with the president himself.

Reacting to news that a department store had dropped his daughter’s line of clothing and accessories, Trump tweeted – and retweeted from the official presidential account – that Ivanka Trump had been treated “so unfairly by @Nordstrom.”

Ivanka Trump does not have a specific role in the White House but moved to Washington with her husband, Jared Kushner, who is one of Trump’s closest advisers. She followed her father’s approach on business ties by handing over operating control of her fashion company but retaining ownership of it.

In a Thursday morning interview with Fox News from the White House briefing room, Conway urged people to “go buy Ivanka’s stuff,” boasting that she was giving the brand “a free commercial here.”

While Trump and Vice President Mike Pence are not subject to ethical regulations and laws for federal employees, Conway, who is a counselor to the president, is. Among the rules: An employee shall not use his or her office “for the endorsement of any product, service or enterprise.”

Bringing a new leader to D-428

Now that the DeKalb School District 428 board and its superintendent have agreed to a settlement, it’s time to turn the page.

On Tuesday, board members unanimously approved a settlement with Doug Moeller that will pay him through April 30, when he will retire.

Including the work Moeller has missed since he was placed on leave in September, he will have been paid more than $100,000 not to work.

In exchange, Moeller will walk away from the final two years of a five-year contract, during which he was scheduled to earn more than $400,000 in salary.

This is not a productive way to spend public funds.

Our hope is that district officials learn from this episode and do a better job protecting taxpayers in future employee contracts by making them shorter-term and making it clear that employees can be terminated for causes such as sexual harassment and retaliation.

The deal that allows Moeller to walk away is better than most working people, who would have been fired months ago.

Just weeks into the school year, Moeller was accused of harassment by Michele Albano, Moeller’s hand-picked choice to take over as principal at DeKalb High School this school year. She said he had threatened to ruin her career after she insisted their personal relationship, which she said grew over the previous summer, should be platonic.

Albano filed a grievance with the school district and received an emergency no-contact order from a Kane County judge, which required Moeller to stay at least 100 feet

However, Albano did not go to court Oct. 6 to face Moeller, and the order was dismissed. Moeller was never charged with any crime and has never publicly responded to the allegations.

In October, we wrote that if there was a clear and convincing case Albano’s allegations are true, that Moeller should be fired. But short of mutual agreement, personal disability or death, Moeller’s contract said he could be fired for cause only for “any conduct deemed to be neglect of duty or for the commission of any crime.”

Board members settled on this payout as the most expedient way to make a clean break. They chose to be practical rather than take a stand.

A clean break will be good for the school district, which has had only a part-time leader in interim Superintendent Bradley Hawk for most of the year.

In the wake of this controversy, public interest in serving on the board has exploded.

A board for which only two names appeared on the ballot for four seats in 2015 will have 10 people vying for three seats this year.

Those who win in April should help decide who the next school superintendent will be and what kind of contract he or she will receive.

They also will help decide how District 428 will meet other challenges that directly affect children and taxpayers in DeKalb, Cortland and Malta.

We hope that this episode will be remembered in the district and in the regrettable event it should be repeated, officials will act more decisively.

Trump’s unwanted gift to Wall Street President Donald Trump says he wants to reduce the regulatory burden on the finance industry. But by taking aim at a new rule on retirement advice, he’ll most likely add to that burden – and harm many small investors at the same time.

In the U.S., saving for retirement can be a perilous endeavor. “Free” advice often isn’t. Advisers such as brokers and insurance agents usually work on commissions that encourage them to steer less sophisticated customers into expensive funds and annuities and away from better, cheaper alternatives. Typically they don’t disclose this conflict of interest. Estimates say the extra fees add up to billions of dollars a year, money that would otherwise go toward retirees’ financial security.

After much debate and consultation, the Labor Department last year issued a rule to protect investors: Advisers who get paid to recommend retirement investments must disclose the arrangement. The rule also

holds them to the same fiduciary standard that applies to most other financial advisers, meaning they can be sued for failing to put clients’ interests first. Note that it doesn’t apply to financial education and simple marketing – so, for example, big mutual-fund companies such as Vanguard or Fidelity could keep selling their products on their own websites.

Just as the industry was getting ready to comply, Trump has ordered the Labor Department to review the rule with an eye to rescinding or revising it. His National Economic Council director, Gary Cohn, has criticized the rule for “putting only healthy options on the menu” – as if parsing opaque conflicts and investment options were as simple as choosing between oatmeal and doughnuts. This is no way to go about reducing the regulatory burden.

Plans have been made. Many financial firms say they’ll comply regardless. Scrapping the rule mainly would benefit the least scrupulous advisers,

while adding to regulatory uncertainty for the rest.

This isn’t to say the rule is perfect. Discouraging commissions could lead advisers to stop serving people with small accounts. Research suggests this may have happened in the U.K., which recently adopted a similar but more stringent rule. The Labor Department should be on the lookout for such unintended consequences. Congress might even want to consider opening the federal Thrift Savings Plan – available to legislators and their staff – to people who don’t have access to a retirement plan at work. Encouragingly, however, financial companies are rapidly rolling out inexpensive automated services that might address any “advice gap.”

Dropping the fiduciary rule at this point is a lose-lose proposition. It would mean worse retirement advice for the people who need it most, and added costs for much of the industry. President Trump should let it stand.

Dear time travelers: Welcome to 2017

My Lord, these time travelers.

They’re everywhere.

I first noticed this influx of visitors from the past – men, mostly – shortly after the election. Filling my email inbox. Trolling my Twitter and Facebook feeds. Offering one unsolicited directive after another about how women should be conducting themselves.

We should leave the country if we don’t like President Donald Trump – and keep our opinions to ourselves.

Good luck with that one, boys.

They mock our femininity and attractiveness and openly speculate on our sex lives. And oh, how they pity the men stupid enough to marry us.

Over and over, we’re back to this: “If you love your husband so much, how come you didn’t change your name?”

I figured out the answer to that one years ago. I just smile and say, “But I’ve always been called Connie.” They scowl and blink a few times and, like magic, they just run out of things to say.

It’s not so surprising, really, to see why these time travelers are showing up now. They feel emboldened. The man who bragged about grabbing women by their genitals got elected anyway. If you are the kind of guy who admires that, how could you not find

So here they are, ramping up the hate mail and acting as if we’re still taking orders from them. I was raised to be polite, so I tend to welcome them to the year 2017 and explain that women can think for themselves now and speak their minds, too. As most women know, this has been true of our gender for all of time, but I keep that bit of history to myself. I figure these time travelers will eventually return to women who wish they hadn’t, and those sisters are entitled to their secrets.

Lately, I’m wondering whether time travel isn’t contagious. Spreads like a syndrome maybe.

Take North Dakota, the largest producer of spring wheat and home of “Geese in Flight,” a piece of art made from used oil-well pipes and tanks that, according to Guinness World Records, is the largest metal sculpture in the world. I mention these things because I don’t want you to think the story of North Dakota begins and ends with the conduct of two state representatives

who took on the womenfolk to defend so-called blue laws requiring some businesses to open late on Sundays and others to stay shut all day long.

State Rep. Bernie Satrom said Sundays should be devoted to “spending time with your wife, your husband, making him breakfast, bringing it to him in bed.” He continued, “And then after you’re done with that, go take your kids for a walk.”

State Rep. Vernon Laning seconded that emotion and added, “I don’t know about you, but my wife has no problem spending everything I earn in 6½ days. And I don’t think it hurts at all to have a half a day off.”

Laning later told the NBC affiliate that people who are offended by their comments need to get a sense of humor.

How many times do we have to go over this? Nothing kills a joke like having to explain it. If we aren’t laughing, you aren’t funny.

Meanwhile, in the U.S. Senate, the Republicans voted Tuesday to formally silence Democratic colleague Elizabeth Warren. She dared to impugn the character of Sen. Jeff Sessions by reading a 1986 letter from Coretta Scott King urging the Senate to reject Sessions’ nomination as a federal judge.

This went about as well as you can imagine. Warren stepped outside the chamber and read the letter live on Facebook, garnering millions of viewers and sparking a Twitter storm of support that has yet to subside. Millions more Americans have now read King’s letter, thanks to the fact that everyone from Aunt Wanda to NPR posted it online.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell explained that Warren knew darn well she was violating an arcane rule of the Senate.

“She was warned,” he said. “She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”

Nevertheless, She Persisted.

Boy Scout Troop 2810, chartered out of Salem Lutheran Church in Sycamore, recently had a campout at Lowden State Park in Oregon, Ill. After many of the Scouts had braved tent camping the month before to earn their Polar Bear badge, cabin camping was a welcome change. Despite the muddy conditions, the Scouts had a good time making hearty meals, playing card games and participating in the annual bingo/gift exchange.

The brief afternoon program will include a formal introduction of each inductee and may include musical performances and short tribute speeches.

Craig Mathey, Advocate Award recipient, graduated from Sycamore High School in 1972. His musical career began in fifth grade when his parents encouraged him to try a musical instrument; he chose the accordion.

During his first year of lessons, Craig discovered he had a natural

talent and ear for music. His breakout performance took place his senior year, on the SHS stage during the AFS Review Variety Show. From that moment on, Craig was hooked on performing. He realized he had a natural ability to play the keyboards, and since then, he has enjoyed performing with many musical groups.

Late rally falls short for Spartans

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Sycamore girls basketball coach Adam Wickness elected not to play his top two scorers in the first quarter.

It was that important to him to show his respect to his seniors.

The Spartans dug themselves an early hole, and a late comeback fell short in a 46-37 loss to Morris on senior night Thursday at Sycamore.

“They’ve earned it,” Wickness said of only playing seniors in the first quarter. “They’ve been a part of the program for a long time, and I’m a firm believer that senior night is their moment and their time. I wanted to give them an opportunity. ... They held their own, and I was very proud of that.”

Wickness elected to only play his group of six seniors – regular starters Juliet Mathey and Taryn Mathey, along with Emma Stice, Maegan Schwartz, Kelsey VanVlerah and Re’ana Foster – in the first period and said the original plan was to see how things went early. The Spartans (18-9 overall, 8-5 in Northern Illinois Big 12 East) built an early 4-2 lead behind baskets by Taryn Mathey and Stice before trailing, 12-6, after the period.

“I like that he did that,” Taryn Mathey said of Wickness’ decision.

“It meant a lot. I’ve played with these girls for nine years now. We’ve been playing together since fourth grade.

I loved being able to experience that with them.”

The Spartans’ top two scorers – freshman Kylie Feuerbach and junior Kate Majerus, along with sophomore post Maria Wright – subbed into the game at the start of the second quarter.

Feuerbach finished with a teamhigh 10 points and eight rebounds in the final three quarters, and Majerus had eight points and hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

Morris junior guard Mya Shannon led all scorers with 22 points and had five rebounds in the win to help her team improve to 16-11 overall and 6-6 in conference.

Morris built a lead as large as 15 in the second half, after an 8-0 run to close out the third quarter put the Spartans into a 39-24 hole starting the fourth.

However, the Spartans answered with a 10-0 run – featuring layups by Stice and Feuerbach and Majerus’ two 3-pointers, the second of which came well beyond the arc – to cut the deficit to five with 4:19 remaining.

Spartans’ aggressive trapping defense, which forced seven Morris turnovers in the fourth quarter.

“We know that (Sycamore’s) defense is good,” Morris coach Kate Carey said. “When they put that pressure on you, it’s not going to be easy and it’s going to be some of the toughest pressure we’ve seen. We’ve had some games where we’ve been able to play a little bit of keep-away, and that was by far the toughest we’ve seen on that catch-up defense.”

Sycamore didn’t get any closer, however, as Shannon went a perfect 6 for 6 from the foul line in the final minute for Morris.

“We gave up too many points, that’s the bottom line,” Wickness said. “Our goal is to keep teams in the 30s. ... We were chasing (an) eight (-point lead) at half and lose by nine, so we didn’t do what we needed to do in the second half.”

Beyond the stats: Sycamore boys basketball player James Marcinkowski nailed a half-court shot during halftime to win $150.

They said it: “It’s rough losing, and knowing it’s your last game on your home court,” said Taryn Mathey, who was visibly emotional after the loss.

“I was emotional before the game because it was senior night and a big deal. I love playing at home and in front of a crowd.”

The football programs of CaryGrove, Rockford East and Northern Illinois University were shaken Thursday with news that Alex Kube was dead at age 29.

Kube, a 2006 C-G graduate, was a standout player for the Trojans and later enjoyed a successful career at NIU. He trained many McHenry County-area athletes at his Elite 7 facility before moving to Rockford last summer.

He coached as East’s defensive backs coach last season.

Kube was pronounced dead at 11:50 p.m. Wednesday at Rockford Memorial Hospital. Winnebago County Coroner Bill Hintz performed an autopsy Thursday, but said the preliminary cause of death will need further studies.

Those who coached Kube or played with him remember an effervescent personality who loved to help others, whether that meant through support or by supplying some laughs.

“Alex played the game with an unbelievable amount of passion,” former NIU teammate Pat Schiller said. “The one word that sticks out to me when thinking about our time together was ‘passion.’ He was one of the most emotional players I’ve ever played with. ... There’s truly not enough words that can describe the type of man, player and most importantly, friend that he was. He touched so many of us, and we will all miss him.”

Kube burst onto the scene as a freshman safety in 2007, leading the team in tackles with 111 despite not playing in the final game of that season.

He became the first freshman in 31 years to lead the Huskies in tackles and was named a Freshman All-American by The Sporting News under former coach Joe Novak.

He finished with a career-high 15 tackles against Navy late in the season.

When Jerry Kill started his threeyear tenure as the Huskies head coach in 2008, Kube was moved to linebacker and eventually was named thirdteam All-Mid-American Conference as a senior in 2010.

“He was a leader on the field and took me under his wing when I was a freshman,” said Schiller, who played with the Huskies from 2007-11. “As se-

After they became acquainted, Gary Griffin hired him as an assistant coach. Griffin lauded Kube as a big reason the E-Rabs improved from 1-8 to 4-5.

“I called a meeting of the players today so they didn’t find out on social media,” Griffin said. “It’s a life lesson for our kids that none of us are invincible. Return of goal-scoring Toews buoys Hawks

mpotash@suntimes.com WINNIPEG, Manitoba – It’s difficult to tell what’s in store for the Blackhawks in the final two months of the regular season – whether they’re primed for a run at overtaking the Wild for the Central Division title or destined for another March lull that will leave them scrambling for momentum heading into the playoffs. Even the trade deadline is an X-factor – they can add somebody or nobody.

But as they head into the final two games of a six-game road trip against the Winnipeg Jets tonight at MTS Centre, they’ve got one thing going for them that bodes particularly well for a team that thrives on intangibles – a percolating Jonathan Toews.

“Players like that, when they’re going, they bring lots of guys with them.

So the whole dressing room is rising,” forward Marian Hossa said. “Jonny’s always playing well, but when he’s productive like right now, I think he’s [making] everybody around him better.”

Mired in a scoring slump in the first half of the season – Toews had four goals and 14 points in 26 games through Dec. 20 – Toews has regained his offensive touch, with seven goals and 19 points in the Hawks’ past 20 games, including

four goals and 11 points in the past seven games. His game-winning goal in overtime against the Wild on Wednesday night – shoveling a rebound past Darcy Kuemper – was an opportunity he had missed too often earlier in the season.

“I’m just trying to find that groove every night where I’m working hard, playing with confidence with the puck, playing the right way and not getting ahead of the play,” Toews said. “Sometimes when you’re not thinking offense, the offense just seems to come.”

And as coach Joel Quenneville noted, there are residual benefits of a player of Toews’ ability becoming a more dangerous threat.

“It puts your team in a great spot,” Quenneville said. “It gives us more balance. … [We] have a couple of lines where the opposition has to be worried about what line they want to check or be concerned about. I think it helps loosen up the coverage of the other lines as well.”

While the Hawks (33-17-5) obviously are buoyed by Toews’ offensive uptick, they never sweated his scoring slump.

“I think it might just add a little bit more depth and little bit more confidence throughout the room,” teammate Patrick Kane said. “I don’t think any of us in here really look at him and think, ‘Oh, he’s not playing well. What’s going

on with the team?’ Or things like that.”

Still, Toews’ scoring decline at 28 bears watching. Even with the recent binge, he’s on a pace for career-lows in goals and points, and his shooting percentage has dropped from 15.6 last season to 8.9 this season. But like his fellow slumping Selke Award-winning contemporaries – the Kings’ Anze Kopitar (six goals, 32 points, 6.0 shooting percentage in 48 games) and the Bruins’ Patrice Bergeron (13 goals, 29 points, 6.6 shooting percentage in 52 games), Toews’ allaround game keeps his value near the top – just not at peak levels.

“Even when he’s so-called not pro-

ducing, he’s still doing a lot of different things that are helping the team,” Kane said. “Some guys are measured by production more than others, and he’s probably one of those guys. But I think overall he’s been playing pretty much the same.

“Sometimes it’s bad puck luck. Sometimes you’re overthinking things. But as of late it seems like he’s got a little more confidence – he scored a great goal [against the Wild] and played a great game. We’ll probably need that down the stretch from him, especially if we want to advance as far as we can.”

McDermott remains confident despite dwindling minutes

Not the fans or the media.

McDermott finally seems to be over letting that type of noise creep into his head.

It hasn’t been easy. Through his first two seasons, McDermott admittedly allowed the pressure of being a lottery pick in the 2014 NBA Draft affect him to some degree. Especially since the Bulls gave up two first-round draft picks to acquire the Creighton scorer from the Denver Nuggets.

No longer.

“Nah, not even thinking about that anymore,” McDermott said. “My attitude is just go out there and whatever happens, happens, especially with my shot.”

What’s happened lately with that shot, however, has not been great. Not only has McDermott still struggled

with inconsistencies from beyond the 3-point arc, but his defense remains an issue. The result of that has been second-round pick Paul Zipser jumping him in the rotation, and McDermott’s minutes dwindling.

“I mean, it is what it is,” McDermott said of Zipser’s rotation promotion. “It’s a good opportunity for Paul. Obviously [coming off the bench first] was something I was comfortable with [early in the year], but he’s played well.

“I have been getting comfortable coming in that second quarter, and they’ve been running a lot of offense for me so that I can be aggressive in a short period of time. I’m fine with it, I guess.

Obviously, you’d rather be the first guy off the bench, but that’s what the coaches see.”

And what the coaches are handing out.

McDermott was averaging 27.4 minutes a game in the month of December.

By January, it was down to 24.1 minutes a game. Through the first four games

in February? How about 15.3 minutes a game, including the win over Sacramento on Monday in which McDermott saw just a season-low nine minutes.

According to coach Fred Hoiberg, McDermott was lethal from outside in the Thursday afternoon practice, but now needs to consistently carry that over to games.

“Now it’s about going out there and doing it in the game,” Hoiberg said.

“You can make all you want in practice – 50 or 60 in a row – but when those lights turn on that’s when you gotta go out and perform, put it in the hoop. See that thing go in, and get your confidence back. Sometimes it’s as simple as that.”

McDermott, however, feels like his confidence is just fine.

“That’s why I’m out there, to shoot,” McDermott said. “I think I’m shooting a little better from 3, getting more attempts up, rather than thinking I’m not a shooter. That’s important. It’s been a lot better the last few weeks, but I know I still have to clean up some stuff.”

One person still very confident in McDermott? Veteran Rajon Rondo, who has become the main ball-handler with that second unit.

“All [Doug] needs is a game like Memphis [when he scored 31 points],” Rondo said. “A couple games in a row to get going, and then the sky is the limit. Regardless of how many shots he’s missed, if he’s open, I’m hitting Doug.

“Young players need positive reinforcement, staying in his ear, continue to support him in the rough times, and eventually, if he’s a professional NBA player he’ll come through.”

That’s what the Bulls are waiting for.

Make that hoping for.

“I don’t know what happened. Obviously they had to do what they had to do. They were in the right. Security has to do what they have to do. But at the end of the day it’s still your teammate. So that was tough.”

Tirico to replace Costas on NBC’s Olympic coverage starting in 2018

NEW YORK – Mike Tirico is taking over from Bob Costas as the primetime host of NBC’s Olympics coverage starting next winter in South Korea.

Costas, who has been the on-air concierge to NBC’s Olympics 11 times starting in 1992, said he decided on his own a year ago that the time was right for a change.

“This is entirely on my terms and I like it that way,” Costas said Thursday.

He said he wants to do some commentary on special events – maybe even the Olympics – and long-form program-

ming, likening his new role to what former news anchor Tom Brokaw does at NBC. He also wants to broadcast more baseball to get his fastball back, saying he listened to old tapes and realized he wasn’t doing that as well as he used to.

“I’m not retiring, I’m just transitioning,” he said.

The 50-year-old Tirico had been considered an heir apparent since joining NBC Sports from ESPN last year. He helped with the network’s coverage of the Rio Olympics last summer.

The Olympics role requires the host to set the stage for the night’s telecast, guide viewers on switches to different venues, handle news if it breaks and

conduct on-air interviews. It was a job popularized by ABC’s Jim McKay in the 1970s. Costas and Tirico both paid tribute to McKay on Thursday, with Tirico recalling a time he sat next to him on a plane and pumped the veteran for stories about the Olympic experience.

Costas’ decision denies him a victory lap in Pyeongchang in 2018, although he may not miss the Winter Olympics.

In Sochi, Russia, in 2014, Costas was sidelined for six days because of an eye infection.

“I hope I enhanced people’s enjoyment and understanding of the events,” he said, “and I hope that I presented

a sense of the drama, the theater, the excitement and, when appropriate, acknowledged all of the issues involved.”

He said his favorite Olympics memory was in Atlanta in 1996, when Muhammad Ali, despite his Parkinson’s disease, was a surprise torchbearer who lit the flame at the stadium.

“Somehow even in that condition he was just as charismatic and magnetic as he’s always been,” Costas said.

Costas and Tirico have a tie that goes way back. They both graduated from Syracuse University, where Tirico was the first recipient of a scholarship in Costas’ name.

NEW YORK – Charles Oakley maintains he did nothing wrong before he was surrounded by Madison Square Garden security officials.

Something has happened, however, to turn him from popular player to persona non grata within his former franchise.

Oakley blamed his strained relationship with the Knicks and owner James Dolan on Thursday for the altercation that led to his ejection and arrest from New York’s 119-115 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night.

Oakley said during an ESPN Radio interview that he had been in his seat for just a few minutes when he was surrounded by security, denying that they approached him after he shouted at Dolan.

“Now I’m four rows from this guy, so I’m going to walk in this place and just start hollering, ‘James Dolan!

James Dolan!’ I mean, that’s embarrassing, man. I did not do none of that,” Oakley said. “I didn’t know the man was sitting in front of me at first until they walked over there.”

Oakley said he has been told that Dolan must be informed by security whenever he is in the arena, and that MSG staff follows him when he leaves his seat to go the bathroom.

But the Knicks said he was causing trouble Wednesday even before security reached his seat.

“There are dozens of security staff, employees and NYPD that witnessed Oakley’s abusive behavior,” the team said in a statement. “It started when he entered the building and contin-

ued until he was arrested and left the building. Every single statement we have received is consistent in describing his actions. Everything he said since the incident is pure fiction.”

Clippers forward Blake Griffin said he recognized Oakley right away and saw him say something to Dolan before the altercation at his seat.

“I was walking down and I saw him.

He stopped and he started talking to Dolan,” Griffin said. “But it was crazy. I didn’t know what it was about or anything. I just saw a bunch of commotion.”

Oakley was charged with three counts of misdemeanor assault and one count of criminal trespass. He is accused of striking one security guard in the face with a closed fist, and when two other people tried to intervene, both were pushed and received cuts.

He is due back in court April 11.

Oakley pushed and shoved his way around the basketball court at MSG for 10 years as a fighting forward during an era of excellence for the Knicks, who made one NBA Finals appearance and became an Eastern Conference power while Oakley played for them from 1988-98.

He was back there brawling again Wednesday, only this time it was a sad sight in what’s perhaps the team’s sorriest era.

The Knicks have become one of the league’s worst teams, winning only one playoff series since 2001 and falling to a franchise-worst 17 wins two years ago. Oakley has been a vocal critic of the performance and that’s led to his falling out with the organization.

The team gave him complimentary tickets and acknowledged him on the video board when he first retired,

sports@daily-chronicle.com Genoa-Kingston senior guard Julie Galauner put on a show offensively, but the Cogs girls basketball team fell, 60-50, Thursday at Stillman Valley.

Galauner finished with a game-high 30 points and made eight 3-pointersht.

The teams were tied at 28 at halftime before the Cardinals outscored the Cogs, 19-7, in the third quarter. Genoa-Kingston got the deficit to two with just more than three minutes remaining, but Stillman Valley sealed the win at the foul line.

Genoa-Kingston, which didn’t at-

tempt a free throw in the game, finished the regular season 19-7 overall and 6-4 in the Big Northern Conference.

The Cogs will be the No. 2 seed in the Class 3A Sterling Regional and will face either No. 9 Freeport or the No. 10 seeded host Warriors in a semifinal slated for 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Kaneland loses at Geneseo: The Knights took a four-point lead into the fourth quarter, but lost, 47-40, on the road.

Kaneland, which led, 29-25, after the third quarter, will be the top seed in the Class 3A IMSA Regional and will face either No. 9 Sandwich or No. 10 IMSA at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

SPORTS BRIEF Fleck’s 5-year, $18M contract comes with big buyout, bonuses

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck’s five-year, $18 million contract comes with a hefty buyout if he is fired and substantial bonuses if the Gophers win big.

The university on Thursday released details of the deal agreed to last month and set to be finalized this week. Fleck, a Kaneland graduate and former Northern Illinois standout, will make $3.5 million in his first season, with $50,000 annual raises over the remainder of the contract, which is valued slightly above the average

for Big Ten football coaches.

If Fleck is dismissed without cause after one year, the university would owe him $9 million. The buyout figure drops to $3 million after three full seasons and $1.5 million with one year remaining.

The 36-year-old Fleck spent the past four seasons at Western Michigan, and in 2016 led the Broncos to a 13-1 record and Cotton Bowl appearance. If he were to leave Minnesota for another school before the end of his contract, Fleck would owe the university $1 million for every year remaining on the deal.

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley sleep apnea increases the risk of abnormal heart rhythms in the middle of the night, which can lead to sudden death. Considering the degree of your wife’s uncle’s daytime sleepiness, he may have severe sleep apnea.

I would voice these concerns to your wife’s family members, and urge them to enroll him in a sleep study for a definitive diagnosis. I have many patients whom I suspect of having sleep apnea, but who are reluctant to take part in a sleep study because they don’t want to sleep in a lab, even one designed for sleep.

If your uncle shares that fear, tell him – as I tell my patients – that a sleep study can also be done in the comfort of their own home with a monitor hooked up in the house.

After diagnosis comes treatment. Sleep apnea is correctable with use of a pressure mask that keeps the airway open, called CPAP, for continuous positive airway pressure. That’s not to say CPAP is an easy cure. Many people have difficulty using this mask at night, and still others don’t want to investigate the possibility of sleep apnea for fear of having to wear a mask over their face all night. For those who have difficulty with CPAP, a device called a mandibular advancement device is also an option. This device acts like a rigid retainer to push the lower jaw forward and open up the airway.

Despite the unpleasantness of the remedies, your wife’s uncle and family should be made aware that sleeping all day isn’t normal and that a sleep study is vital. The health risks are too great to ignore.

Dear Doctor: My wife’s uncle, who lives with us, is 76 and obese. I have noticed he sleeps an awful lot – to me, anyway. He sleeps approximately five or six hours a night and then later while sitting on the couch. He frequently takes afternoon naps or will fall asleep while reading and will also fall asleep while watching TV at night. My wife doesn’t seem to be concerned. Should we be?

Dear Reader: The quick answer is yes, you should be worried. I wouldn’t assume that your wife’s uncle’s sleepiness is a function of age. The details you provide make me suspect sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is a common disorder, affecting 15 percent of adult males, that occurs when people are sleeping. The biggest risk factors are obesity, being male and older age. Your wife’s uncle has all three of these. In a 2000 study of 700 adults, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, every 10 percent increase in weight is associated with a sixfold increase in the rate of sleep apnea. With the rates of obesity increasing over the last 30 years, the rates of sleep apnea have also increased. In sleep apnea, lying flat creates an obstruction of the airway, so much so that the person stops breathing. This is noted as a pause in breathing that can last for a few seconds to longer than a minute. What the partners of sleep apnea patients typically hear is snoring that stops when the patient’s airway obstructs. This is followed by a lack of breathing sounds, then a gasping of air as the patient tries to recover his or her breathing.

Patients themselves don’t notice this pattern.

Because sleep apnea interferes with deep sleep (stages 3 and 4), sleepiness and fatigue are the most common signs of sleep apnea.

But the risks go beyond sleepiness. Chronic sleep apnea in men leads to a higher risk of hypertension and diabetes and lower testosterone levels. Over the years, sleep apnea places stress upon the heart, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Further,

Bridge experts sometimes hide their secrets by means of ruse -- as in today’s deal. It was played by Australian junior international Andy Hung (South) and was described by Ron Klinger, that country’s most prolific writer-teacher-player.

East’s two-diamond opening showed a weak major two-suiter.

Hung started with a takeout double, being a tad wary about his short holdings in the majors, but when West pre-empted to three hearts, Hung bid three no-trump, hoping for the best.

After West led the heart king, and East encouraged with the three (upside-down signals), what did declarer do?

South had eight winners: two spades, one heart, four diamonds and one club. Extra winners could have been established in clubs, but that involved losing the lead and, presumably, watching the opponents run their hearts. Was there a possibility?

Hung found a play that would have occurred to almost no one. At trick two, he returned the heart 10!

Yes, West, given his partner’s signal at trick one, should have played low, but he won with his queen and shifted to a spade.

Declarer won with dummy’s ace, cashed the diamonds, then played the ace and another club. The heart suit was blocked, so the defenders took only one club and three hearts.

If South’s ruse had not worked, he would have rued not being in five -or, here, six! -- clubs.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC REVIEW OF THE DEKALB SYCAMORE AREA TRANSPORTATION STUDY'S (DSATS) FY17-21 TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM (TIP) HIGHWAY AMENDMENT 5 PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD The DeKalb Sycamore Area Transportation Study is the metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for the City of DeKalb, City of Sycamore, Town of Cortland, and portions of DeKalb County. The DSATS FY17-21 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) Amendment 4 is available for public review and comment from Friday, February 3, 2017 to Friday, February 17, 2017.

The TIP represents planned transportation improvements for Fiscal Years 2017-2021. The TIP is a short-range capital improvements program outlining a 4-year schedule of projects that have been locally approved by DSATS to receive federal funding. This TIP Amendment includes addition of the extension of the Great Western Trail in Sycamore from Brickville Road to Main Street.

The public involvement procedures used in the development of the TIP satisfy the program-of-project requirements of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Section 5307 Program.
