Chicken farmers: Processors treating them like servants

The Associated Press DES MOINES, Iowa – Former chicken farmers in five states have filed a federal lawsuit accusing a handful of giant poultry processing companies that dominate the industry of treating farmers who raise the chickens like indentured servants and colluding to fix prices paid to them.

The farmers, located in Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Texas, allege that the contract grower system created by Tyson Foods, Pilgrim’s Pride, Perdue Farms, Koch Foods, and Sanderson Farms pushed them deep into debt to build and maintain chicken barns to meet company demands.

They say the companies colluded to fix farmer compensation at low levels to boost corporate profits, making it difficult for the farmers to survive financially. They are seeking class action status for the suit filed in federal court in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

The scheme keeps farmers in a state of indebted servitude “living like modern-day sharecroppers on the ragged edge of bankruptcy,” the lawsuit filed Jan. 27 says, quoting from the 2014 Christopher Leonard book “The Meat Racket: The Secret Takeover of America’s Food Business.”

Under the contract system, farmers provide the barns and labor to raise the chickens and the company provides chicks, feed and expertise to

raise birds to slaughter weight.

The companies named haven’t yet responded to the lawsuit in court, but one denied the allegations.

“We want our contract farmers to succeed and don’t consult competitors about how our farmers are paid. These are false claims,” said Gary Mickelson, a spokesman for Tyson.

He said the average contract farmer has been raising chickens for the company for 15 years and the compensation paid is clearly outlined in contracts farmers voluntarily sign.

The five farmers who filed the lawsuit have quit raising chickens, and some of them say they are tens of thousands of dollars in debt.

The farmers and their attorney declined to comment beyond the details in the lawsuit. But other chicken farmers who could be represented if the case is certified as class-action, spoke of going deep into debt to build modern chicken barns as long as two football fields with the promise of generous profit.

“The farmers put their homes and their farms in hock to borrow the money to build these things. Once they do, the companies have control over them period,” said Mike Weaver, 62, of Fort Seybert, West Virginia, who’s is in his 16th year of raising chickens for Pilgrim’s Pride.

“We’re hoping to bring about a change in this system. It has to be done. If not, the American family farmer is going to disappear.”

Weaver said he does not have debt, but knows farmers who have lost their farms.

NIU police partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Robert Clements, a 14-year-old Clinton Rosette Middle School student, spent almost two years waiting to be matched with a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters of DeKalb County.

Robert’s mother, Heidi, said it was hard to find him an appropriate match because he has Asperger’s syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism. It was only after a letter from Northern Illinois University Chief of Police Tom Phillips, who wanted his department to provide more outreach to youth, that Robert agreed to the pairing.

Robert and Phillips were among the first matches made through the Bigs in Blue program, a special branch of Big Brothers Big Sisters that seeks to couple NIU police officers with middle and high school students to get them to think about their future goals.

“When I was younger, college was just something kids with money and stability do, but eventually I realized that was all psychological,” Phillips said. “By knowing someone here on campus and building relationships, it just gives kids a chance at college and plants the seeds that they can go.”

Robert said the program has allowed him to start thinking about his life after high school.

“I was unsure of it at first, but once I started trying it, I had the opportunity to meet other people and try to get to know others,” Robert said.

Phillips said that if he has anything to say about it, Robert will go to college.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of DeKalb County Director Jenée Jeanblanc said the program started in March as a pilot in 12 cities, and the first matches in DeKalb started meeting in October after a thorough vetting process.

“Child safety is our No. 1 priority, and officers are screened the same way any other volunteer would be,” Jeanblanc said.

Once it is determined that a child will be in safe hands with his “Big,” the next step is getting to know each volunteer’s personality, interests and experience with children to learn which children would be good fits for them.

The “littles” come from Clinton Rosette and Huntley middle schools, as well as DeKalb High School.

Kids involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters are typically selected through guidance counselors or social workers because they might require better social skills or increased confidence.

Day shift officers will visit their Little Brother or Little Sister’s school during their lunch period to play games, work on their homework or just talk.

Jeanblanc said that a unique feature of DeKalb’s program is that NIU night shift officers who are paired with high school-aged students try to introduce them to activities on campus that would play into their future success, such as tours of the residence halls, sitting in on classes and meeting with various student groups.

“A lot of it involves discussion prompts, talking about what they want their lives to look like in the future and then working backward to figure out how to get there,” Jeanblanc said.

Jeanblanc and Phillips both said that they would love to get other higher education institutions, such as Kishwaukee College, involved with connecting at-risk youth to mentoring programs.

The first applications from officers in the DeKalb and Sycamore police departments just started coming in, and Jeanblanc said she hopes to have them matched with kids in early March.

Currently, two applicants are in DeKalb and one in Sycamore.

“I’m really proud of the program,” Jeanblanc said, “and I’m hoping that it’s going to grow from here to reach out to other law enforcement agencies in the county.”

H-BR schools mourn loss of longtime teacher Mary Gunier in 2010, the year she retired after 30 years at Hinckley-Big Rock High School.

Mary Gunier was one of those teachers who would remember a person’s name years after they’d come through her classroom, and knew how to make people feel special, Jennifer Klambauer said.

Klambauer was a freshman at Hinckley-Big Rock High School in 1979 when she had Gunier as a science teacher. Klambauer’s three children would later be taught by Gunier as well. They were just a few of the host of students whose lives Gunier touched in her more than three decades teaching at the school.

“You always felt you were her favorite class,” Klambauer said.

Gunier retired in 2010 after more than 30 years teaching in Hinckley-Big Rock schools. On Tuesday morning, she was killed in a crash at the intersection of South County Line Road and Route 23 west of Somonauk. She was 66.

Visitation for Gunier will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home, 13160 W. Route 34 in Somonauk. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 320 S. Depot St. in Somonauk, with the Rev. Kevin Butler officiating. Burial will follow in Elerding Cemetery in Sheridan.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Gunier, her mother, Rosemary (Hughes) Hanley, and her three sons, David, Matt and Brian Gunier.

Gunier’s death came as a shock to many, including those at Hinckley-Big Rock schools who remembered her for her dedication and caring nature.

Jay Brickman, principal of Hinckley-Big Rock High School, said Gunier had continued to substitute teach in Hinckley-Big Rock schools after retirement. While working full time, she taught high schoolers biology and chemistry and coached students for the Academic Bowl.

“Mary was an incredibly warm and caring person,” Brickman said. “She always put the kids first.”

Gunier graduated from Illinois State University and received a master’s degree from Northern Illinois University.

Brickman said Gunier was a highly professional and skilled teacher whom everyone regarded as a team player.

“She was the embodiment of what an educator should be,” he said.

“We truly lost a member of our family,” he said. “We feel it today. She will always be remembered.”

Denise Curran, a former English teacher at Hinckley-Big Rock, said that for the first 12 years Gunier taught at the school, they would carpool to work together from Sandwich.

“She was one of the most kind, dedicated teachers I knew,” Curran said.

“She literally bled Hinckley-Big Rock blue.”

Gunier was known for wearing royal blue and cheering on student-athletes at games as well as chaperoning the high school prom every year.

Curran said Gunier loved to laugh and was always genuine; she also was an “avid crocheter” who won awards for her crafts at the Sandwich Fair.

Curran said the number of students, colleagues and friends who have been sharing stories about Gunier on social media is evident of her impact as a teacher.

“All the research shows, it’s the human being behind that teacher who makes learning exciting and fun,” Curran said.

Jay Streicher, superintendent of Somonauk School District 432, said Gunier was president of the sports booster club and helped with fundraisers for Somonauk schools when her sons were enrolled.

“She was a great, great lady,” Streicher said. “I know that she is going to be missed by her family. Her contributions here will be remembered for a long time.”

Investigators recovered two guns, a .38-caliber revolver and a .22-caliber handgun. The serial number of the revolver was completely filed off and unreadable; the serial number on the handgun was partially defaced, but was still readable, according to police records.

The search also uncovered a digital scale and other evidence of drug sales, police said.

Williams later told police that he

was selling marijuana and that he knew there were guns in the apartment, according to court records.

In July 2016, he was charged with a similar drug offense.

Williams remained at the DeKalb County Jail as of Wednesday night in lieu of $100,000 bond. Jones was released after posting $150, or 10 percent of her $1,500 bond.

Williams is next due in court Friday. Jones is due back in court Feb. 21.

DeKALB – A police raid on an apartment in DeKalb’s University Village turned up two handguns, more than two ounces of marijuana – most of which was in the toilet – and resulted in the arrest of two residents.

Raymont D. Williams, 20, of the 700 block of Russell Road, DeKalb, was charged with armed violence, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a firearm without a FOID card, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and defacing a firearm. Armed violence is typically punishable by six to 30 years in prison.

Emily K. Jones, 20, of the 700 block of Russell Road, DeKalb, was charged with possession of marijuana and attempting to obstruct justice, both misdemeanors. If convicted, she could

face up to a year in jail.

The DeKalb Police Department and DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office worked together on the investigation, DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Raymont Scott said.

Williams Police went to the apartment with a search warrant Tuesday morning. Williams attempted to hold the door to prevent them from entering, according to a police synopsis contained in court records. Police Emily Jones said Jones tried to flush the marijuana down the toilet before they entered.

In total, police found 65 grams – a little more than 2 ounces – of marijuana, including 47 grams in the bowl of the toilet, according to the police

Man acquitted in home invasion Support

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A jury Wednesday acquitted a DeKalb man accused of entering a friend’s apartment in the middle of the night, tying him up and beating him.

Scott T. Brown, 30, of DeKalb was charged with home invasion and aggravated battery in connection with the 2012 crime. He had faced up to 30 years in prison.

After three days of testimony, it took the jury 3½ hours to reach a verdict.

Brown was acquitted of both charges.

He was visibly relieved by the decision; some of his family members and supporters watching from the gallery wept.

Outside the courtroom, Brown thanked his family, his fiancée and his attorney, Clay Campbell.

“I want to thank everybody who knew that I didn’t do this – they stood by me,” he said.

Campbell praised Judge Philip Montgomery and the jury.

First Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein prosecuted the case with Assistant State’s Attorney Alesandra Friend. Klein told the jury that the case against Brown would be proven by

science. Experts testified that Brown’s DNA was found in a glove at the victim’s apartment in the 800 block of West Taylor Street, DeKalb.

The victim, a now-31-year-old man, “did unscrupulous things,” Klein said.

He had been convicted of unlawful restraint in 2009 and theft in 2015.

She described the beating in detail, noting that the victim’s blood soaked through the couch and into the carpet beneath it.

Defense attorney Clay Campbell said the savage beating coupled with the fact that nothing was stolen from the apartment showed the crime was motivated by hatred. He said his client had been friends with the victim since childhood and had no reason to attack him. Campbell also said that the DNA sample recovered from the glove contained two DNA profiles. He said that meant the glove was worn by two people. He further said that his client wore similar gloves at his job and had discarded them in a variety of places, including in his car and possibly at the victim’s apartment, which he had visited many times before the attack.

Although DNA from another person was recovered, that person hasn’t been identified.

Brown was arrested in September 2014 after he was linked to the crime by DNA evidence. He later posted $50,000 bail, 10 percent of his $500,000 bond, to be released while pending trial.

The victim told police two people broke into his apartment while he was sleeping on Dec. 12, 2012, and hit him at least 15 times with a blunt object, court records show. The victim was put into a choke-hold, had his mouth duct-taped shut and was knocked unconscious, according to court records. When he awoke several hours later, his hands were bound and he was bleeding from his head, authorities said.

The attack broke the victim’s nose and possibly fractured an elbow, and he received several stitches and staples in the front, sides and back of his head, police said.

The victim testified, along with police officers and two DNA experts.

Brown also took the stand and denied having any involvement in the crime.

Brown still faces a pending 2015 domestic battery charge. He is next due in court in March in that case.

“Justice is a glorious thing,” Campbell said after the verdict.

Prosecutors declined further comment on the pending case Wednesday.

Valentine’s day is a holiday that has its roots in ancient times. But it was celebrated with gifts until the first cards appeared about 1760. Since then, valentines have changed with the fashions and technology, and they are a popular collectible. Cards were made at home, with drawings, poems, cutouts and other ways of expressing love. In 1848, Esther Howland of Worcester, Massachusetts, started making valentines from pieces of fancy paper lace and printed pictures with handwritten messages of affection. Soon, she was selling valentines to friends, and started a business that lasted until 1880. The style of the valentine can help tell its age. Mechanical cards with parts that could move so a pictured girl could wave her arm were the newest type in the 1890s. Embossing also was popular.

In the early 1900s to 1920s, postcards were used. Postage was one cent. Diecut cards that could be punched out of a single sheet of stiff paper were developed in about 1900. These often came as a set with 25 cards for students and one for the teacher. Folded cards were in style by the 1930s and these, plus photographs and digital cards, are still sent today. Vintage homemade lacy cards made from paper lace, “scraps” and small shaped and printed pictures, sell today for $10 to $100 or more. Age, condition and beauty determine the value. They are not in a style that is popular today, and old office chairs are not wanted. Wooden chairs are not as comfortable as the new padded or mesh chairs. *** Q: I have an old Rumrill green vase. I’d like to know a little more about it.

A: Rumrill Pottery was designed by George Rumrill of Little Rock, Arkansas, and made at other potteries. It was produced by the Red Wing Pottery of Red Wing, Minnesota, from 1933 to 1938. In January 1938, production was transferred to the Shawnee Pottery in Zanesville, Ohio. The clay Shawnee used was too porous and the vases leaked, so Rumrill was moved to Florence Pottery Co. in Mt. Gilead, Ohio, in December 1938. The factory burned down in 1941 and Rumrill was then produced by Gonder Ceramic Arts in South Zanesville. Production stopped by early 1943. You didn’t send a picture of the vase and the Rumrill mark, so there is little we can tell you about its price.

A large, unusual vase could sell for over $100. An average vase with simple decoration might be worth $25-$50. *** Q: I inherited a 1916 Edison Diamond Disc Official Laboratory Model Phonograph, No. C-19. It is an upright dark oak cabinet that is 4 feet 3 inches high. There are 80 excellent thick records. How can I sell these? The player is windup and in perfect condition.

A: Edison’s Model C-250 Chippendale was introduced in December 1915 and originally sold for $285, which was expensive at the time. Cabinets were made in oak or mahogany, and later in walnut. The Diamond Disc phonograph had a diamond stylus that lasted longer than an ordinary stylus and could only play the records especially made for it. Kennedy announces bid for governor

CHICAGO – Chris Kennedy, son of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, announced Wednesday he will run for Illinois governor in 2018, bringing the instant name recognition of his family’s political legacy to what’s expected to be a sharply contested race.

The Democratic businessman said Illinois is heading “in the wrong direction” under Republican. Gov. Bruce Rauner, who’s seeking re-election. In an email and video sent to supporters, he talked up history of service and said he wants to “restore the American dream to the people of this state.”

“Today, I am announcing my run for governor because I love Illinois, but we have never been in worse shape,” he said. “We don’t need incremental improvement – we need fundamental change in state government.”

Kennedy, 53, is the eighth of 11 children of Ethel Kennedy and Robert Kennedy, a former U.S. attorney general who represented New York in the Senate and was assassinated in 1968 while seeking the Democratic nomination for president. He is the nephew of for-

SPRINGFIELD– Legislation that attempts to ensure abortion remains legal in Illinois regardless of what happens on the federal level moved to the House floor Wednesday.

The Human Services Committee voted 7-5 to endorse the plan to strike anti-abortion language inserted in the aftermath of the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade.

Democratic Rep. Sara Feigenholtz’s measure would reverse language stating that if the ruling is ever overturned, abortion would again be outlawed in the Prairie State.

“We want to affirm that Illinois is a state where abortion will be safe and accessible,” Feigenholtz told the Associated Press. “There has never been such

Program promotes diversity in advanced classes

BELLEVILLE – Gov. Bruce Rauner is publicizing a program designed to make it easier for low-income and minority students to find seats in advanced-placement classes in high school.

The Republican and his education adviser – Beth Purvis – spoke with Belleville West High School students Tuesday about the Lead Higher Initiative. Illinois was first in the nation to be selected for the program last March.

A nonprofit group called Equal Opportunity Schools runs the initiative with the nation’s leading college preparatory programs. It works with high schools to identify and enroll students in college preparatory classes who might otherwise miss out. This helps schools more accurately reflect student diversity in their advanced classes.

Chicago archdiocese settles sex abuse lawsuit

CHICAGO – The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago has agreed to pay $2.3 million to a victim of sex abuse allegedly committed by defrocked priest Daniel McCormack.

The settlement was reached with a man who claimed in a lawsuit he was 12 when he was sexually abused by McCormack. At the time, the priest was assigned to St. Agatha’s Parish on Chicago’s West Side.

The victim alleged he was abused before McCormack was arrested Aug. 30, 2005, on suspicion of sexually abusing a different child and again afterward.

The man’s attorney, Lyndsay Markley, said the lawsuit was filed in 2014 and was settled Jan. 5 to avoid the trauma of a trial.

Archdiocese spokeswoman Colleen Tunney-Ryan declined to comment on the details of the settlement.

Wheaton man arrested in death of ex-wife

WHEATON – A Wheaton man was heading for O’Hare International Airport for a flight to Hawaii when he was arrested on murder charges in the death of his ex-wife.

Authorities said 56-year-old Lee Leinweber is charged with first-degree murder in the Jan. 30 slaying of 58-year-old Erin Leinweber at her home in Wheaton.

DuPage County Circuit Judge Richard Russo on Tuesday set his bail at $2 million.

Assistant State’s Attorney Tim Diamond said Leinweber decided to kill his ex-wife after they argued. Diamond said Leinweber provided heinous details of the murder to police in two separate recorded interviews.

The prosecutor said the suspect assaulted Erin Leinweber in several ways, beating and ultimately suffocating her.

Leinweber allegedly used her credit card to buy a one-way ticket to Hawaii.

Senate ‘silencing’ gives Warren national boost

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The turbulent national debate over race, gender and free speech consumed the normally staid Senate on Wednesday after the GOP majority voted to silence Sen. Elizabeth Warren, abruptly elevating her celebrity status at a moment when liberals are hungry for a leader to take on Donald Trump.

The highly unusual rebuke of the Massachusetts Democrat came as the Senate weighed President Trump’s choice for attorney general, GOP Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, who secured confirmation on a nearly party-line vote Wednesday evening. It also gave frustrated Democrats a rallying cry weeks into a presidency that is dividing the country as few before.

“I certainly hope that this anti-free-speech attitude is not traveling down Pennsylvania Avenue to our great chamber,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York warned darkly as Democrats jumped at an opening to link the GOP’s conduct to that of Trump himself. “This is not what America is about – silencing speech, especially in this chamber.”

Republicans argued they were just trying to enforce necessary rules of decorum in a Senate that is a last bulwark of civil debate in an angry nation.

“I hope that maybe we’ve all been chastened a little bit,” chided the No. 2 Senate Republican, John Cornyn of Texas.

“We’re at a pretty challenging time in our nation’s history when many people who were surprised and disappointed at the last election are unwilling to accept the results. ... I only hope that after the passage of some time they will return to their senses.”

They noted the GOP did not apply

This time, Warren drew a warning from the presiding officer as she quoted Tuesday evening from a letter written by the late Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts that referred to Sessions as “a disgrace.” She continued with her speech, and began quoting from Coretta Scott King’s letter and an accompanying statement that accused Sessions, a federal prosecutor at the time, of using the power of his office to “chill the free exercise of the vote by black citizens.”

Democrats are portraying Sessions as a threat to civil rights, voting rights and immigration; Republicans have defended Trump’s choice to be the top law enforcement officer as a man of integrity who will be an independent voice in the new administration.

McConnell stood and invoked Rule 19, saying that Warren has “impugned the motives and conduct of our colleague from Alabama” in quoting the words from Mrs. King.

Permission granted to finish pipeline The ASSOCIATED PRESS CANNON BALL, N.D. – The Army on Wednesday granted the developer of the Dakota Access oil pipeline formal permission to lay pipe under a Missouri River reservoir in North Dakota, clearing the way for completion of the disputed $3.8 billion project.

The Standing Rock Sioux tribe, which is concerned a pipeline leak could pollute its drinking water, has vowed to challenge the Army’s decision in court.

The stretch under Lake Oahe is the final big chunk of work on the 1,200-mile pipeline that would carry North Dakota oil through the Dakotas and Iowa to a shipping point in Illinois. Energy Transfer Partners had hoped to have oil flowing through the pipeline by the end of 2016, but construction has been stalled while the Army Corps of Engineers and the Dallas-based company battle in court over the crossing.

The Army Corps of Engineers confirmed the easement was issued. The Army is involved in pipeline approval

under the river because the Corps manages the Missouri River and its system of hydroelectric dams, which is owned by the federal government.

The Standing Rock Sioux, whose reservation is just downstream from the crossing, has mounted legal challenges and led protests that drew hundreds and at times thousands of people who dubbed themselves “water protectors” to an encampment near the crossing.

ETP said the pipeline will be safe.

An assessment conducted last year determined the crossing would not have a significant impact on the environment. However, then-Assistant Army Secretary for Civil Works Jo-Ellen Darcy declined to issue permission for the crossing Dec. 4, saying a broader environmental study was warranted given the Standing Rock Sioux’s opposition.

The Corps launched a study of the crossing Jan. 18 that could have taken up to two years to complete, but President Donald Trump signed an executive action six days later telling the Corps to quickly reconsider Darcy’s decision.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on Wednesday slammed the court that is deliberating his immigration and refugee executive order as being “so political,” part of a relentless pounding of the judiciary branch that prompted a rebuke from his nominee for the Supreme Court.

Speaking to a group of police chiefs, Trump said his immigration order was “done for the security of our nation.”

He quoted from the portion of the immigration law that he said gave him the power to enact the ban, calling it “beautifully written” and saying “a bad high school student would understand this.”

“Courts seem to be so political and it would be so great for our justice system if they would be able to read a statement and do what’s right,” he said.

“And that has to do with the security of our country, which is so important.”

Trump’s comments come as the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is weighing the appeal of his executive order on immigration, including a temporary travel ban on people from seven Muslim-majority countries. In a hearing Tuesday, judges on the appeals court

challenged the administration’s claim that the ban was motivated by terrorism fears, but also questioned an attorney’s argument that it unconstitutionally targeted Muslims.

Since a lower court judge blocked the order last week, Trump has criticized the decision. He labeled the judge in the case a “so-called judge” and called the ruling “ridiculous.”

Legal experts, Democrats and some Republicans criticized Trump’s remarks as jeopardizing the independence of the judiciary and attempting to use political influence to sway the courts.

Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court joined the criticism Wednesday in a meeting with Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut.

Blumenthal said Judge Neil Gorsuch described the president’s comments about the judiciary as “demoralizing and disheartening.”

Gorsuch’s confirmation team confirmed the judge’s comments.

In his speech, Trump sought to link his comments about the court battle over his executive order to the law enforcement community in attendance.

Trump’s moral blind spot Of all the strangely accommodating remarks President Donald Trump has made about Russian President Vladimir Putin, none is quite so startling and pernicious as his suggestion that the United States is morally equivalent to a ruthless regime whose critics keep getting murdered. For all its flaws, the U.S. is fundamentally different from the Russia of Putin, whose relentless pursuit of hegemony over his neighbors and the degradation of the West is founded in cynicism. Every U.S. president before Trump has embraced a contrary vision of American exceptionalism in which the country serves as a beacon of democracy, human rights and the rule of law. For Trump to casually equate the two is as false as it is shocking.

Trump was interviewed by Fox News commentator Bill O’Reilly for a broadcast just before the Super Bowl. O’Reilly brought up Russia, and pithily declared: “But he’s a killer, though. Putin’s a killer.”

O’Reilly may have been referring to the many critics of Putin and his regime who have died in the past 17 years, including the opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, shot in the back near the walls of the Kremlin in 2015; anti-corruption investigator Sergei Magnitsky, who died in prison in 2009; former KGB man Alexander Litvinenko, poisoned with polonium in 2006; respected journalist Anna Politkovskaya, shot the same year.

Trump replied, “There are a lot of killers. We’ve got a lot of killers. Well, you think our country’s so innocent. You think our country’s so innocent?”

O’Reilly: “I don’t know of any government leaders that are killers.”

Trump: “Well – take a look at what we’ve done, too. We made a lot of mistakes. I’ve been against the war in Iraq from the beginning.”

O’Reilly: “But mistakes are different than – ” Trump: “A lot of mistakes, but a lot of people were killed. A lot of killers around, believe me.”

To state the obvious, in the U.S, critics of the president are not poisoned or gunned down. By suggesting that U.S. military operations in Iraq are equivalent to such crimes, Trump repudiates the very notion of a foreign policy based on values.

The U.S. is far from perfect: Its history includes dark chapters both at home and abroad. But as President Barack Obama observed, American exceptionalism lies in its elevated aspirations, and in the nation’s capacity to reverse its errors through democratic reform. Rather than embrace that tradition, Trump’s rhetoric suggests he will mimic Putin in the naked pursuit of narrow interests and disregard for legality and morality. It is a doctrine that leaders of both parties, along with ordinary Americans, – The Washington Post should repudiate.

Move forward with Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines

Among the headlines President Donald Trump made during his first week was one citing his executive order to clear obstacles standing in the way of the proposed Keystone XL and Dakota Access oil pipelines.

That is a good start, many may have reacted. Now, let’s move on to accelerating federal action on natural gas pipelines important to the country.

Former President Barack Obama held up the Keystone XL pipeline for much of his term in office, citing environmental concerns. That was despite the fact his own State Department investigated and concluded there were no environmental concerns about the pipeline, intended to bring Canadian oil to the United States.

Obama’s action on the Dakota Access pipeline was more egregious. The oil transportation line already was under construction when, late in his presidency, Obama chose to shut down work solely because of protests against the project.

Good for Trump for ordering federal officials to stand aside and allow construction of both pipelines. They will be better for the environment than other methods of transporting oil, not to mention safer.

During the Obama administration, federal officials consistently “slow walked” permitting and other actions needed to clear the way for construction of pipelines to carry gas produced here to processing facilities and overseas shipping terminals. As a result, a sub-

stantial amount of gas in our country has been locked up.

A gas company official put it this way: “Ours is an industry on a leash.”

Of course, considerations of safety, preservation of valuable natural areas and other environmental concerns should not be dismissed. No one has asked the federal government to do that.

But the Obama administration’s policy of hampering any fossil fuel initiatives it could not kill needs to end. If Trump’s order on the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines does not make that clear to federal agencies, the president should pick up his phone or his pen and reinforce his intentions.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

VIEWS Ramesh Ponnuru oppose. Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio also claims that Gorsuch proved he was “far outside of the judicial mainstream” in treating corporations as people.

Yet only two of the nine justices on the Supreme Court sided with these senators in denying that corporations could qualify for protection under religious-liberty statutes. Justices Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan, both Democratic appointees, voted against Hobby Lobby, but refused to endorse that argument. So who’s really out of the mainstream?

Sen. Ron Wyden tweets that, “Gorsuch represents a breathtaking retreat from the notion that Americans have fundamental Constitutional rights” and “harkens back to the days when politicians restricted a people’s rights on a whim.” You can read this in one of two ways. Perhaps the Oregon Democrat is saying Gorsuch does not believe that the Constitution protects any fundamental rights. But there is no evidence at all that Gorsuch takes that absurd view and abundant evidence

against it.

Or maybe Wyden is saying he believes the Constitution protects some specific fundamental rights that Gorsuch does not see in the document.

Gorsuch does not, for example, believe that the Constitution protects a right to assisted suicide. (The Supreme Court has never held that it does.) Perhaps Wyden disagrees. But if Wyden means only that Gorsuch would rule differently than Wyden would like, he is using deliberately hyperbolic language to describe a banal disagreement.

Nan Aron, the head of an influential liberal organization called the Alliance for Justice, sent out an email after Gorsuch’s nomination saying: “He is critical of laws that ensure workers’ rights and safety, guarantee equal opportunity, safeguard consumers and investors, ensure the safety of food and drugs, and protect our environment.”

No, he isn’t. He has, however, said that when federal agencies issue regulations for those and other purposes, courts should make sure those regulations are authorized in laws passed by Congress. Aron would have you believe that enforcing a law is the same thing as undermining it.

Aron also said, “Gorsuch protects police officers who use excessive force.” What Gorsuch actually did was

cite a unanimous Supreme Court decision that protects police officers unless they are plainly incompetent or knowingly break the law.

Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, said, “What saddens me the most as a mom and a grandmother, though, is his hostility towards children in school, children with autism.”

She claims that Gorsuch ruled that the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act “doesn’t apply to them.”

Pelosi will be much happier when she realizes Gorsuch never ruled that way. He did rule that the law did not entitle the parents of a child with autism to the specific assistance they sought. It was a unanimous decision of three judges, including one appointed

by President Bill Clinton, and it expressed sympathy for the family.

I don’t mean to paint all liberals with the same brush. Some of them are noting that he is exactly the reasonable and judicious pick he appears to be. Others are working hard to distort his record – and in the process discrediting only themselves.

YMCA will suffer with coming of hospital health center

To the Editor: I served on the DeKalb County Board from 2000 to 2010, and during that time was a member of the Health & Human Services Committee for many years and concerned about how DeKalb County funding was allocated.

I was particularly interested in services for those in need, from family services, health care, to mental health treatment, and over the years have seen inadequate health funding for mental health even though supplemented in part by the 708 Mental Health Board.

It is a growing problem and now finding out that the KishHealth System branch of Northwestern Medicine is about to build a $46 million, 111,000-square-foot megacomplex for health and fitness right next door to the Kishwaukee Family YMCA, I feel

sad for our community.

First and foremost, KishHealth has neglected developing the Ben Gordon Mental Health Center to meet the growing crisis. Furthermore, this newly proposed Kish-Northwestern facility not only competes with our nonprofit YMCA, but puts many of the smaller health and wellness providers in our community at risk.

This is all happening at a time when DeKalb’s police department city crime statistics for 2016 demonstrate a growing demand upon our police and others in responding to attempted suicides and mental health crises in the DeKalb area. Data provided by police show that responses to mental health crises in DeKalb alone rose 25 percent in 2016 over 2015. Police were called more than 200 times, a dramatic increase from the 156 the year before.

So the need is evident for better mental health care and should include crisis inter-

vention beds at the hospital or at the Ben Gordon Center. At the same time, we need to be sure we are meeting the health and fitness needs of the poor and middle class, not just those of the country club set.

I would hope that the community at large will join in demanding that the YMCA be compensated for the devastating effect this new megafacility right next door will have on them. New board must choose right leader for DeKalb D-428

To the Editor: DeKalb school boards traditionally have had a problem with hiring the right superintendents. One of the reasons I am running

for school board in DeKalb School District 428 is to change that situation.

It is impossible for us to be efficient and effective as a school district and to provide a quality education for our students without good leadership.

The current situation in which the leadership and judgment of District 428 is in serious disrepair needs to be corrected by the new board.

It is only under the leadership of quality administrators that we can realize the full potential of our great teachers and students.

It also is, very importantly, through hiring effective administration that we as a board will fulfill our obligation to the taxpayers of District 428 to be responsible stewards of their tax dollars.

Liberals have at their disposal three kinds of arguments against confirming Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.

They can say that the mainstream judicial conservatism that he undoubtedly represents is dangerously wrong.

A lot of liberals probably believe this.

But most people find that argument unreasonable, so few liberals make it.

They can say that Gorsuch should not be confirmed to keep Republicans from being rewarded for their refusal even to consider President Barack Obama’s nomination of Judge Merrick Garland for the same seat on the Supreme Court. But voters didn’t much care about Garland’s plight last year, when his nomination was live, and are unlikely to care more about it now.

This leaves door number three: Liberals can pretend that Gorsuch is a far-right extremist. Many liberals are rushing right in.

“Unfortunately, Judge Gorsuch has proven to have a judicial philosophy outside of the mainstream and time and again has subjugated individual rights to those of corporations,” Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York said.

She cites Gorsuch’s ruling that the Hobby Lobby craft-store chain should be able to refuse to offer employee health coverage for contraceptives that its evangelical Christian owners

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In a matchup between two of the best women’s basketball teams in the Mid-American Conference, Northern Illinois took a lead early in the second quarter.

Then things fell apart for the Huskies.

Central Michigan went on a run in the second quarter and never looked back in a 109-94 victory over the Huskies on Wednesday night at the NIU Convocation Center.

“I thought they really got their transition going, we had some breakdowns in transition, and they got some easy things,” NIU coach Lisa Carlsen said.

“I think that affected us, as far as our aggressiveness ... and sharing the basketball on the offensive end. It was like we gave up something easy and we were frustrated with that and we may-

be didn’t get the best shot we could, and then we gave up another easy one.”

NIU senior Ally Lehman, who flirted with a triple-double, hit a jumper to put the Huskies (16-6 overall, 9-2 MAC West) ahead, 27-25, with 9:27 left in the second quarter.

The Chippewas (17-6l, 9-2 MAC West) responded by going on a 28-3 run – putting them up 53-30 – and their lead didn’t dip into single-digits until the final two minutes of the game.

“We kind of let one bad play lead to another,” said NIU senior forward Cassidy Glenn, who scored 21 points.

“We came out in the second half and fought more, but I felt like if we came out in the first half like we did in the second half, it would have been a different game.”

NIU had won 10 of its previous 11 games, and the loss dropped the Huskies into a tie with Central Michigan for second place in the MAC, with Ball State (17-7, 10-2 MAC West) jumping into first with a win over Bowling Green on Wednesday. The Huskies topped the Cardinals, 101-96, Jan. 28 in Muncie, Indiana.

The Chippewas led by as much as 20 in the second half, and the Huskies cut it to 70-60 after a pair of free throws

by Lehman with 3:39 left in the third quarter. However, Central Michigan answered with a 3-pointer by Aleah Swary seven seconds later.

“To be honest, I thought it was closer,” Lehman said. “At one point, I thought we were single digits, and then I looked up and we were down 14. Maybe better awareness and defensive stops were the big key, and that’s where we really struggled.”

The Huskies finally got it into single digits twice – with a 3-pointer by Woods with 2:12 left in the game and a layup by Cassidy Glenn with 1:06 remaining – but got no closer than nine.

By the numbers: Central Michigan outrebounded the Huskies, 58-30, including 21-9 on the offensive boards.

However, that only translated into a 16-12 advantage for the Chippewas on second-chance points.

Beyond the stats: The Chippewas were picked by the coaches as the preseason favorite to win the MAC. They were coming off a 104-63 victory at Eastern Michigan, with the 41-point drubbing being the most lopsided victory in conference play of any team in the MAC. They said it: “We’re going to have to find a way to rebound the basketball better and not give a team like Central that many second-chance opportunities,” Carlsen said. “It makes you play defense for consecutive possessions, and that wears on you physically and mentally. You play good defense and you get the shot clock into single numbers and then you give up an offensive board and have to play another 30 seconds of defense or you’re in a scramble situation and you’re not where you need to be.”

Up next: The Huskies play at Buffalo at 1 p.m. Saturday, and the Chippewas play host to Western Michigan on Saturday.

By the numbers: Hickey finished fourth on the vault (9.7) and second to Leman on the floor (9.575). Lauren Leman was the only other Barb with a medal, taking fourth on the bars with a 9.5.

Beyond the stats: The Barbs’ score was the highest of the completed sectionals so far.

They said it: “Next week we need to work on being more consistent in places, cleaning stuff up,” Morreale said. “We probably have a point we can go up still based on some of the mistakes we had. Hopefully, the girls will be hungry.”

Wild coach Bruce Boudreau joked before the game that the Hawks were simply “trying to make us feel good”

seconds into the second period off a great feed by Jonathan Toews, who had a vintage performance at both ends of the ice. He has three goals and seven assists in his past seven games.

But the Wild responded in a big way, dominating play for most of the rest of the period. Jared Spurgeon beat Corey Crawford high on the glove side to cut the lead to 2-1 only 37 seconds after Schmatlz’s goal. Crawford did his best to hold on to the lead, making big stops on Alex Tuch, Ryan Suter, Nate Prosser, Eric Staal and Charlie Coyle in about a four-minute span before Zach Parise finally broke through with the equalizer.

The Hawks challenged the goal because they thought Parise was offside, and replays seemed to support their case. But after an absurdly long review – more than six minutes, which included linesman Ryan Daisy talking on an iPhone – the replays were deemed inconclusive, and the goal stood.

After a few more nice stops by Crawford, the Hawks took the lead back at 17:24 of the second when Toews sent a pass into the slot for Niklas Hjalmarsson, who made a nice leave for Richard Panik, who tucked the puck behind Darcy Kuemper to make it 3-2.

Toews still seeking consistent linemates

mlazerus@suntimes.com ST. PAUL, Minn. – Everyone who ever has played on a line with Jonathan Toews – which is almost the entire Blackhawks roster at this point – says that he’s one of the easiest players to play with.

So why can’t anyone stay up there?

“I think it’s easy to play with a guy like that, who works so hard,” said rookie Nick Schmaltz, Toews’ latest left wing. “When he’s working that hard, it makes you want to work that hard. It just brings up your game when you play with a guy like that.”

Toews has gone through 13 left wings (and 15 total linemates) since the start of last season, in the wake of the Brandon Saad trade to Columbus. That trade finally stopped the revolving door on Patrick Kane’s line by bringing in Artem Anisimov, but it started the spinning on the top line.

And Toews, who never exactly has hid his frustration about it, is paying the

price, mired in one of his worst offensive seasons, with 10 goals and 20 assists in 45 games entering Wednesday’s showdown with the Minnesota Wild.

“I would never have predicted that my line would change as much as it has,” Toews said. “It’s up to me to find that consistency with whoever I’m playing with.”

Toews always puts the onus on himself, but he did note that Anisimov’s line gets basical- Nick Schmaltz ly an endless leash, allowed to have an off night here or there without fear of breaking it up, because it’s had so much success. If Toews’ line has a bad night, or if the Hawks’ offense in general isn’t producing, only Anisimov’s line tends to stay the same.

That makes it tough to build any chemistry.

“Sometimes it is tough when you have to start that chemistry over,” Toews said. “Sometimes, even if I go a few games without scoring or produc-

ing, it’d be nice to start to build that chemistry and start to know where the other two guys are on your line.”

Schmaltz, along with current right wing Richard Panik, hopes he can be the guy to help stabilize the line.

“It’s tough in the first couple of games with new players,” Schmaltz said. “But as you play together more, you develop and understand tendencies, what guys want out of you and stuff like that. The more we play together, the better we’ll get.”

Havlat retires: Martin Havlat, who played three seasons for the Hawks and scored 29 goals in the 2008-09 season, announced his retirement Wednesday.

Havlat helped lay the groundwork for the Hawks’ decade of dominance, but never won a Stanley Cup in Chicago.

“Any time you miss out on a championship, it’s a tough pill to swallow,” said former teammate Brian Campbell.

“I even feel like I missed out on a couple. It [stinks] that way. I really liked him. Everybody did.”

Coach Joel Quenneville, who took

over as head coach four games into that 2008-09 season, also enjoyed having Havlat on the team.

“Dangerous player,” he said. “The guys really liked him as a teammate, as well.”

Havlat posted 594 points in 794 career games.

Roster report: Rookie Vinnie Hinostroza returned to the lineup after being a healthy scratch in two straight games.

“We just want a little consistency,” Quenneville said. “Offensively, defensively, [it’s] that predictability we want in our younger guys. It’s how you play without the puck in your own end, or how you back-check. Offensively, he gives us some spark with his quickness and his speed. You just [need to] find that balance.”

Michal Kempny also returned after three straight healthy scratches. He replaced Gustav Forsling, who had a big offensive night in Dallas, but a poor defensive game, including a turnover that led directly to a Stars goal.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Wild were coming off a nine-day road trip, playing the second half of a backto-back after getting in from Winnipeg well after midnight, and were starting their backup goaltender, Darcy Kuemper, instead of their All-Star, Devan Dubnyk.

The Blackhawks, meanwhile, were at full strength and had three days off leading up to the game.

You wouldn’t have known it by watching.

The top two teams in the Central Division – the only teams in the league playing Wednesday night – put on a show, with the Hawks winning, 4-3, on Jonathan Toews’ overtime power-play goal. The win was spearheaded by some of the Hawks’ biggest names – Toews (one goal, two assists), Duncan Keith and Corey Crawford (35 saves).

by deeming the showdown the “biggest game of the season,” in Patrick Kane’s words. But the truth was, as far as regular-season games in February go, it was a big one. The Hawks entered the game six points back and having played two more games than Minnesota. They needed a win to keep the division title within reach. A regulation loss would have put them eight points back, and still two games deeper into the season.

And as for the Wild, well, they’ve been chasing the Hawks for years.

“I think they’re the team that 29 other teams think they have to jump; we’re not special,” Boudreau said.

“They won three Cups in six years, and when you do that, you’ve earned the right to have everyone bringing their best game to you, and they know that.

We’re not different. They’ve beaten us [three times] in the playoffs.”

The Hawks took a 1-0 lead on Ryan Hartman’s 13th goal of the season at 10:54 of the first. Vinnie Hinostroza – back in the lineup after two straight healthy scratches – created a turnover in the neutral zone and raced up ice before feeding Hartman in the slot for the goal. Hartman has scored in three straight games.

Butler all about getting Anthony

jcowley@suntimes.com SAN FRANCISCO – Jimmy Butler talked to Carmelo Anthony three days ago.

It was a “catch-up” call, Butler said on Wednesday.

What it should have been was a recruiting call, letting Anthony know that he still is welcomed in a Bulls uniform if he goes ahead and waives that notrade clause to escape New York.

Don’t, however, rule out Butler making that call soon.

“That is half the bat- Carmelo tle,” Butler said, when Anthony discussing making a player from another team feel welcomed.

“And I could still do that. I think everybody knows what Carmelo can bring to a team. The dude is a helluva player.

“But I think that we have some things that we’ve got to worry about here first in the next few weeks (leading into the trade deadline), before we go down that road.”

Anthony almost joined the Bulls as a free agent in July 2014, but opted to chase the money and stay in New York, re-signing with the Knicks for a five-year, $124 million deal. Almost $50 million more than what the Bulls could offer at the time.

“It came down to Chicago and New York,” Anthony would say later that season. “Chicago was the one from Day

1 (and) was something I was very impressed with. … There was one point in time I was like, ‘Oh, I’m going.’ ” So what has changed since?

Everything.

Anthony might still love New York, but New York no longer loves him. At least Knicks president Phil Jackson doesn’t.

The latest shot from Jackson came Tuesday in a tweet in the wake of a Bleacher Report article written by Kevin Ding that was critical of Anthony and his desire to win. By the way, Ding and Jackson have had a close relationship Jimmy Butler for more than a decade.

“Bleacher’s Ding almost rings the bell, but I learned you don’t change the spot on a leopard with Michael Graham in my CBA daze,” Jackson said in his tweet.

Graham was a former Georgetown player who Jackson coached in the CBA back in his Albany Patroons days, and ended up releasing because he basically was uncoachable.

Shots fired. Again.

It’s become obvious that Jackson wants Anthony to waive the clause so he can trade him and start the rebuild, and although there have been rampant rumors about LeBron James wanting his good friend in a Cavs uniform, Anthony actually has two friends with the Bulls in Butler and Dwyane Wade, and moveable pieces that make sense.

The Bulls can send Rajon Rondo, Taj Gibson and their first-round pick to the Knicks for Anthony. It would give Jackson another draft pick, an expiring contract in Gibson, and a veteran point guard for next season with Derrick Rose a free agent.

Anthony could slide into the No. 4 spot for coach Fred Hoiberg, give the Bulls another pure scorer, and more importantly help out an organization that many in the league believe values marketing over winning anyway. A poor man’s version of “The Big Three.”

But Butler knows there’s only so much he can do.

“You can talk to [Anthony] and tell him all this, all that, but as far as a trade and all that stuff goes, that’s for the front office, because there’s only so much say [the players] can have in a deal like that,” Butler said. “There’s not too much I can do in that aspect.

“But I will say I learned a lot about [Anthony] over the whole Olympic experience (last summer), and we’ve kept in touch. I’m very grateful for the friendship we’ve built, and it will continue to grow.”

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton and Baltimore star Adam Jones are among the returnees on the 28-man U.S. World Baseball Classic roster, which also includes Colorado’s Nolan Arenado, Arizona’s Paul Goldschmidt, San Francisco’s Buster Posey and Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen.

Cleveland reliever Andrew Miller is part of a 13-man pitching staff that also has Tampa Bay’s Chris Archer, Kansas City’s Danny Duffy, Detroit’s Michael Fulmer, Oakland’s Sonny Gray, Toronto’s J.A. Happ and Marcus Stroman and Seattle’s Drew Smyly.

Jim Leyland will manage the U.S. team, and Joe Torre is the general manager.

Miami has the most players on the roster with three, while eight teams have two players each.

Puerto Rico has 13 players returning from its runner-up squad four years ago, including Carlos Beltran of Houston, free-agent Angel Pagan and Giovanni Soto of the White Sox. Canada’s roster includes Freddie Freeman of Atlanta, reliever John Axford of Oakland and Dalton Pompey of Toronto. Left off the roster was Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin, who had

Kansas City Royals free-agent pitcher Peter Moylan and Oakland reliever Liam Hendriks are among the players on Australia’s roster.

The franchise hadn’t raised ticket prices since 2014. There seemed to be a good reason for that: They hadn’t fielded teams that merited more expensive tickets. That’s what makes Wednesday’s news so bizarre. The Bears are coming off one of the worst seasons in franchise history. This is how you thank your fans? If chairman George McCaskey had a gambling problem, I think I actually would feel better about everything.

McCaskey talks often about the team’s devotion to winning, but very little in the family’s actions backs that up. The root of the problem wasn’t in acquiring Jay Cutler, although that was bad, or even in giving him a contract extension, which was terrible.

It’s that the McCaskeys can’t seem to hire the right people to make those sorts of decisions. There’s no one to tell them the right road to take.

There’s no one to say: “A ticket-price increase after a 3-13 season?

Are you out of your mind?”

There’s only someone to write to season-ticket holders, “Full payment is due on March 31.”

Judge reminding retirees of concussion settlement Sportscaster, former Bears RB Adamle says he has dementia

Mike Adamle, a former NFL running back who went on to a long career as a Chicago and national sportscaster, said he has dementia.

Adamle acknowledged memory lapses and mood swings in an interview with Chicago’s WMAQ-Channel 5 that aired Tuesday. He also said tests in January showed he likely has chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease associated with repeated blows to the head. CTE cannot be confirmed until after death.

Adamle went on leave from his job as a sports anchor for WMAQ nearly a year ago and no longer can work or drive.

He starred at Northwestern and played for the Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets and Bears. He held local and national broadcasting jobs with NBC and ABC and co-hosted the syndicated “American Gladiators” show.

PHILADELPHIA – A federal judge Wednesday urged NFL retirees to register for a concussion settlement that could cost the league $1 billion over 65 years.

About 22,000 retirees are encouraged to get baseline neurological testing. The league expects more than 6,000 of them to eventually be diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

The deal approved by Senior U.S. District Judge Anita Brody resolves thousands of lawsuits that accused the NFL of hiding what it knew about the risks of repeated concussions in order to return players to the field.

At a hearing Wednesday in Philadelphia, lawyers reminded participants they must register for the settlement by Aug. 7, which could make them eligible for treatment and damage awards.

The awards could reach several

million dollars for younger men with the most severe neurological damage, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. The average award is expected to be about $190,000 for those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or moderate dementia.

The awards do not cover depression, mood disorders or future cases of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, which some consider the signature disease of football. However, the U.S. Supreme Court in December declined to hear appeals filed over those exclusions, prompting the rollout of the plan. Players’ lawyers hope the first checks will be sent out by early summer.

“It’s been a long road for many of these NFL players and these families,” said Christopher Seeger, a lead player’s lawyer. “We’re finally at the point that we can roll out benefits ... that are greatly deserved and sorely needed.”

The NFL this week is moving the first $65 million in payments into trust funds that cover injury claims, base-

line testing and education. The league must then pay $120 million more into the injury fund over the next six months.

NFL lawyer Brad Karp said “the league is proud of this settlement” and hopes ex-players with neurological problems will get paid as quickly as possible.

The 65-year settlement program covers players who retired from the league by Jan. 7, 2014.

The awards cover ALS, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and deaths involving or CTE. The awards will vary based on a person’s diagnosis, age and time in the NFL. The settlement committee is setting up a network of doctors around the country to conduct testing. Any doctors with any ties to the NFL are ineligible to take part.

Brody has ordered the parties to revisit the settlement as the science on CTE advances. About 160 ex-players have opted out and will pursue individual lawsuits.

This might be my favorite euphemism of all time. In the second paragraph of their news release announcing extensive ticket-price increases for the 2017 season – after going 3-13 in 2016 – the Bears referred to the changes as “price adjustments.” They could say this because the cost of 2,000 seats at 61,500-seat Soldier Field reportedly will decrease next season.

If what the franchise is doing is a price adjustment, then war is a peace modification, world hunger is a food correction and my lifelong inability to jump high is a celebration of gravity.

The Bears are not tone deaf. They do hear you, the fans. They simply don’t care what you are saying. Anybody in his or her right mind would understand that coming off a miserable three-victory season would be the absolute worst time to raise ticket prices. The mere prospect of raising prices should have led somebody, anybody, at Halas Hall to bang a shoe on a table and say, “We can’t afford to alienate our fan base any more than three straight losing seasons and one playoff appearance in the past 10 years already have!”

But we’re not dealing with people who can discern smart from not smart, and they can’t even use concussions as an excuse for a lack of good sense.

Briles, Baylor went from perennial doormat in the Big 12 to a championship contender, winning consecutive football titles in 2013 and 2014. Baylor hired Mack Rhoades away from Missouri to be its new AD last year and brought in former Temple coach Matt Rhule to take over the football program.

Baylor was given 105 recommendations for reforming its Title IX process

by Pepper Hamilton, the firm that handled the initial investigation. Interim president David Garland said the university considered the recommendations a “mandate.”

“Baylor already had planned to hire an outside auditor to audit the implementation of our enhanced practices, and we welcome the Big 12 Conference’s request of an independent review,” Garland said in a statement. “While the withholding of conference distributions is an unexpected financial event, we do not deem these actions to materially impact the overall financial position of the university. We pledge our full cooperation, and we will work with the Big 12 Conference to conduct the audit as expeditiously as possible.”

Bowlsby said this week Baylor has made “significant progress” on the recommendations from Hamilton.

The Big 12 Conference said Wednesday it will withhold millions of dollars in revenue from Baylor until an outside review determines the university and athletic department are complying with Title IX guidelines and other regulations in the wake of a campus sexual assault scandal.

The league said it would withhold 25 percent of future revenue distribution payments to Baylor. Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said Baylor already has received a $10 million payout for part of 2016-17, and the league expects a total payout of $34 million for each of its 10 schools. The league will withhold 25 percent of the remaining projected $24 million payout – or about $6 million this year.

The Big 12 said its board of directors voted unanimously to withhold the money. Baylor did not take part in the vote.

“By taking these actions, the board desires to ensure that the changes that were promised are actually made and that systems are in place to avoid future problems,” said David Boren, the University of Oklahoma president and

Baylor is not being fined; the money is being placed in escrow pending a third-party verification of Baylor’s reform efforts. But the sanction is the first by the Big 12 since the school in Waco, Texas, was hit by a wave of complaints that it repeatedly or intentionally mishandled assault allegations, many of them involving football players.

Baylor fired coach Art Briles last year and parted ways with university president Ken Starr and athletic director Ian McCaw after an investigation by a law firm found allegations of sexual assault brought to the school were not dealt with appropriately.

The nation’s largest Baptist university still faces at least six federal and state lawsuits as well as a federal civil rights investigation into claims the school and football program ignored, mishandled or tried to cover up reports of sexual or physical abuse and other criminal misdeeds across campus for years. One court filing last week alleges more than 50 acts of rape by more than 30 football players over a four-year period, and that Baylor football promoted a culture of “sex, drugs and violence.”

ome of the biggest names in comedy, including Tina Fey, Bill Murray and Steven Colbert, got their start at The Second City, Chicago’s legendary improv and sketch comedy theater.

And now, DeKalb area residents don’t have to travel to the city to see some of the best up-and-coming comedians as “The Best of The Second City” hits the Egyptian Theatre on Friday.

The Second City is celebrating its 55th year, so audiences will be treated to some of the best sketches and satirical reviews that the theater has performed during its storied history.

The Second City touring company stage manager, Scott Flores-Deter, is a graduate of Northern Illinois University and is thrilled to be bringing the show to DeKalb. Performers include Ryan Asher, Emily Fightmaster, Laurel Krabacher, Carley Moseley, Jeffrey

Murdoch and Scott Nelson.

Nerad said that it’s exciting an alumus of NIU is involved in the show.

“It’s great that someone from NIU was able to work with such a prestigious touring group,” he said. “The Second City always puts on a fantastic show and they have such a historic list of comedians.”

Library hosts Jim Gibbons presentation DAILY CHRONICLE The Kishwaukee College Library will host a presentation by historian Jim Gibbons on World War I, titled “A World Gone Mad,” on Feb. 15.

Gibbon’s presentation is the first in the library’s World War I and America series, which will continue throughout the spring semester. It will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Room A1225 in the Kishwaukee College Conference Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Gibbons will examine significant events that thrust the United States into the war, which started July 28, 1914. The U.S. entered the war in 1917. Gibbons will cover how new weapons for war were first introduced with the aim to achieve ultimate victory – the airplane, the submarine, the aircraft carrier and the tank. The pivotal events he will cover include the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand (which started the war), the sinking of the luxury ocean liner Lusitania and, due to arrogant missteps, the eventual rise of Adolf Hitler to supreme power, leading into World War II. This programming is part of World War I and America, a two-year national initiative of the Library of America presented in partnership with The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the National World War I Museum and Memorial, and other organizations, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Kishwaukee College gallery hosting exhibition by Midwest Paint Group DAILY CHRONICLE The Kishwaukee College Art Gallery is hosting an exhibition of works by the Midwest Paint Group, titled “A Winters Work,” through Feb. 24.

The Kishwaukee College Art Gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. The Gallery is free and open to the public.

“A Winters Work” is artwork created in winter time by 12 of the painters representing the Midwest Paint Group. These painters have been through years of study in plein air landscape painting, still-life painting, and figure painting.

The works offer an encapsulation of forms and abstractions. This structural realization – perceiving responsively in nature – binds the group together in spirit as well as in execution. “A Winters Work” is a grouping of nearly 40 works created over the past several winters.

The Midwest Paint Group is an artist cooperative that was formed 18 years ago for members to exhibit nationally, together and individually.

Stage Coach offers audition prep workshop DAILY CHRONICLE Stage Coach Theater will offer a Musical Audition Preparation Workshop from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 17 and 18 at Stage Coach Theater, 126 S. First St. in DeKalb.

This two-day workshop led by Cortney Newby and Terri Goodman, both professional vocal coaches, actresses and SCP directors, will cover how to prepare an audition binder, what to wear and bring to an audition, song selection and cuts, how to prepare for an audition and call-back, calming stage fright, cold-read preparation, and what to do (and not do) at an audition (and after).

The workshop is for ages 16 and older. Space is limited to 15 participants and will be available on a first-come,

first-served basis.

There will be 10 mock audition spaces available during the workshop – five slots on Friday and five on Saturday – during which participants will be given the chance to sing and address issues with the workshop leaders. There is a $10 fee for participation in these mock auditions. Slots will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

DAILY CHRONICLE Northern Illinois University’s School of Art and Design is hosting an exhibition of artwork from Illinois community colleges.

The show features the professional artwork of community college art faculty and a juried competition of community college student artwork.

The exhibit is being held in two locations: The Holmes Student Center main floor gallery at 340 Carroll Ave. and Gallery 215. The show runs through Feb. 24. It is open to the public at the Holmes Center daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and at Gallery 215 on Thursday, Feb. 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 19, from 1 to 3 p.m.

LOS ANGELES – John Legend and Broadway star Cynthia Erivo will be singing a Beach Boys song at Sunday’s Grammy Awards.

Executive producer Ken Ehrlich announced Tuesday that Legend and Erivo will perform a new arrangement of “God Only Knows” during the show’s In Memoriam segment.

The veteran producer was listening to music at home when he suddenly heard the 50-year-old song in a new way.

“I heard that song for the first time in the context of loss – not lost love, but in the context of what would I be without you, someone who’s gone?” said Ehrlich, who is producing his 37th Grammy Awards this year. “And I played it again, and then I played it again. And then when I wiped away the tear – which seriously I had – I said, ‘This is what we need to do this year. This is the song,’” adding, “It’s by far my favorite Beach Boys song.”

He imagined a slower version for In Memoriam, which he quickly arranged on piano, then tapped Legend and Erivo to perform it.

“They both sparked to it and said yes,” Ehrlich said. “It’s not a song that’s written by someone who is in the In Memoriam segment, but it’s about it, and it really resonates.”

Adderall abuse becoming common Dear Doctor: I know that Adderall is prescribed to children with ADHD. But lately, I’ve been reading stories about college kids who use Adderall to help them study. What is Adderall and who should take it?

Dear Reader: You’ve hit on a topic that’s timely, complex and quite often controversial. When prescribed and used properly, Adderall can be beneficial. But as with any prescription drug, off-label use can create a host of problems.

Look at first-person accounts and you’ll find numerous parents of children with ADHD – that’s attention deficit hyperactivity disorder – who detail the ways that Adderall has helped their son or daughter. But it doesn’t take much digging to find that abuse of the drug is a growing problem.

Let’s start with the drug itself. Adderall is the brand name of a prescription drug composed of two stimulants – amphetamine and dextroamphetamine. It has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat children, adolescents and adults who have been diagnosed with ADHD, a condition marked by a cluster of disruptive behaviors.

These may include agitation, lack of focus, disorganization, forgetfulness, fidgeting, excessive talking or frequent interrupting. Adderall is not approved for use by anyone younger than 6 years old.

As with all stimulants, Adderall increases the levels of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a chemical known as a neurotransmitter, which plays a role in learning ability, movement, attention and in feelings of pleasure or even euphoria.

Adderall helps people with ADHD feel calm and remain focused.

The problem is that Adderall abuse among young adults is rising. According

ASK THE DOCTORS Elizabeth Ko and Eve Glazier to research conducted at Johns Hopkins University, the number of prescriptions for Adderall among young adults remains steady. However, levels of abuse, as well as visits to the emergency room due to adverse effects of that abuse, has spiked.

The newest research shows that misuse of Adderall is highest among young adults between the ages of 18 and 25. Although some may obtain their own prescriptions, most are either buying the medication illegally, or are getting it from family members or friends.

Between 2009 and 2011, the time period covered by the study, use of Adderall among young adults without a prescription rose by 67 percent. During that same time period, ER visits associated with non-prescription Adderall use rose by more than 150 percent.

The drug has a reputation as a study aid that increases concentration and sharpens focus. But non-prescription use of Adderall carries serious risks.

Common side effects include stomach upset, increased heart rate, dizziness, dry mouth and mood swings. Adderall is a controlled substance, and possession without a prescription is a felony.

The bottom line is that non-prescription use of Adderall for any reason is both dangerous and illegal.

He could have established a club winner and had two finesses that he might have tried.

There was a temptation to take the spade finesse at trick one, but South realized that that could wait. If he could just find East with the club ace, the contract was safe.

Declarer took the first trick with his spade king, drew trumps ending on the board and led dummy’s club.

East defended well by not taking the trick. However, South won with his king, ruffed the club three, played a trump to his hand, led the club queen and, instead of ruffing it, discarded dummy’s low diamond.

East took the trick, but was endplayed. If he led a spade or diamond, it would have been away from his queen into dummy’s tenace. So he tried the club jack, but declarer ruffed in his hand (a seventh trump trick) and discarded the spade jack from the dummy. He claimed two spades, six hearts, two diamonds, one club and the club ruff.
