First candidates forum impressions POLL YESTERDAY’S An overflow crowd came out to see DeKalb’s four mayoral candidates talk about issues Monday – some people couldn’t get into the room, which had a maximum occupancy of 125, and decided to go home.

If you missed this one for whatever reason, there will be other events, including March 8 at the Egyptian Theatre. The DeKalb Chamber of Commerce is holding a forum for DeKalb mayoral and aldermanic candidates from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. that night.

On March 9, the 10 candidates vying for three seats on the DeKalb School District 428 board will have their chance to be heard at the Egyptian.

I suspect that all of the candidates will sharpen their messages as we draw nearer to the April 4 election and they interact with more voters. But here are some impressions after the first event: • Jerry Smith seems to be the best public speaker and gave the best opening statement. He promises a thorough review of city hall, including of the city manager and department heads. He said he’ll recommend changes as necessary. Smith said he wants to engage police, faith and neighborhood groups to fight crime, and work with Northern Illinois University’s board and administration to fight the decreasing enrollment at NIU, and a laser focus on ways to bring jobs to the city. However, as he said Monday, he has a few more questions than answers yet about what’s going on in the city government.

• Aside from the incumbent mayor, Misty Haji-Sheikh is the only current elected office-holder. She’s a Democratic County Board member from District 7, which includes most of NIU, but said she would resign if elected mayor. Her insistence that the area’s water resources would help attract employers didn’t necessarily hit big. However, of all the candidates, she seemed to be the best-versed in what NIU students want and how to make them want to join the community – jobs, internships, outreach. One of her highlights of the evening was when she pointed out that the one thing that had actually brought

• Mayor John Rey is not the greatest public speaker, but it was clear Monday that he was the only candidate who had spent the past four years as a member of the City Council. Rey at times spoke about boring but important things, such as vehicle fleet replacement needs that are a big part of the council’s actual work. When other candidates were defending the work of social service agencies and how crucial it is for the city to continue to support them, Rey was the only one who pointed out how many agencies the city funds (11) and how much it spends on them ($150,000 a year). He was also the only candidate to offer strong support for City Manager Anne Marie Gaura, whose job is to run the city on a day-to-day basis.

• Michael Embrey is the only business owner running for mayor, and he advocated a hands-on approach to making DeKalb “business-friendly.” He touted his businessman’s pragmatism, calling himself not a liberal or a conservative, but a “realist.”

When it comes to helping the city’s business community thrive, Embrey advocates for the city to reach out directly to business owners and ask them what it can do to help, and be more proactive in doing “whatever it takes,” including offering incentives to developers who can help bring new development to town. Improving the business climate is important, but not the solution to everything, and Embrey could stand to fine-tune his overall vision for the city, its business community notwithstanding.

NIU enrollment down 5.5 percent in spring 2017

DeKALB – Enrollment at Northern Illinois University is down 5.5 percent from last spring, mirroring the university’s most recent decline in fall 2016 and continuing a downward trend experienced by public universities around the state.

Total enrollment was 17,497 by the 10th day of class, a decrease of 1,022 students from spring 2016’s enrollment of 18,519, according to data provided by NIU. Undergraduate enrollment fell 5.6 percent to 12,894 students, and graduate school enrollment dropped 5.8 percent to 4,358 students, according to the data.

NIU spokesman Joe King said the university was expecting the decline based on previous enrollment trends.

NIU enrollment also declined by 5.5 percent from fall 2015 to fall 2016, which was the steepest drop recorded at the university since 1980.

“Wherever you are up or down in the fall is usually the same in spring,” he said. “In the fall we were down 5.5 percent, and we held steady right at 5.5 percent.”

New freshman enrollment also was down from 55 students last spring to 42 students this spring. From fall 2015 to fall 2016, the incoming freshman class shrank 20.2 percent to 1,802 students.

NIU’s enrollment has declined for seven consecutive years; it was up to 25,313 in fall 2006.

King said administrators typically do not focus as much on spring enrollment numbers, which tend to vary based on fall graduates and students leaving the university for other reasons.

However, an increase in transfers and law students is a source of optimism this spring, he said.

NIU has 557 new transfer students, which is 26 more than last spring, as well as 245 law students, an increase of 13 from last spring.

“In a time where we have no state funding and a lot of uncertainty, it’s exciting there are transfer students still finding NIU as a good option,” King said.

King attributed the interest from transfer students to the university’s increased attention to marketing and communications with local commu-

NIU joins other schools, such as Western Illinois University in Macomb and Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, with a spring 2017 enrollment decline.

Western reported a decline of about 6.2 percent from last spring, with a total enrollment of 9,469 students, while EIU reported a decline of about 15.3 percent from last spring, with a total enrollment of 6,673 students.

Enrollment at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale declined 7.4 percent from last spring, with a total enrollment of 14,636.

Illinois State University in Normal reported an increase of about 1.4 percent from last spring, with a total enrollment of 19,746 students. ISU also had increased enrollment by 1.1 percent from fall 2015 to fall 2016.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign increased its numbers as well, with a total enrollment of 44,339, up about 5.5 percent from last spring.

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – After being on paid administrative leave for five months, DeKalb School District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller will be resigning in April as part of a separation agreement unanimously approved during the district board’s Tuesday meeting.

Moeller’s official resignation and retirement date will be April 30. Until then, the district will continue to pay his $199,600 annual salary and benefits, including health insurance and 15 accumulated vacation days. He will also be reassigned at the board’s discretion to duties and responsibilities consistent with his qualifications until he retires.

By the time he resigns, Moeller, who has two more years remaining on his contract, will have been put on leave for eight months and paid more than $100,000 by the district in that time.

DeKalb High School Principal Michele Albano accused the superintendent of threatening her with a gun and saying he would sabotage her career after she refused taking their relationship beyond co-workers and friends.

A restraining order filed by Albano was lifted in October after she failed to appear in court.

While these claims led to the removal of Moeller as superintendent, the agreement states that it “is not to be construed or used as an admission of any wrongdoing and/or liability whatsoever by or on behalf of Dr. Moeller and/or the Board, as each of the undersigned expressly denies any and all liability or wrongdoing in connection with the disputed issues.”

Interim Superintendent Brad Hawk, who accepted a temporary position after Moeller was placed on leave, is about halfway through his maximum term of 100 days.

District 428 will provide a form letter if asked about Moeller’s time as superintendent saying he started this position May 1, 2014, and retired April 30.

Both Moeller and the district are signing the agreement voluntarily without coercion or influence and are prevented from suing or disparaging each other. Moeller also waives the right to seek reinstatement, damages, remedies or any other individual relief as to any claims he had released under the agreement.

Pot dispensary eyes space in DeKalb

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A Chicago company wants to open a medical marijuana dispensary in the Aspen Ridge Business Park at 650 Peace Road in DeKalb.

Justice Grown, the assumed name of Effingham Medicinal Farms LLC, is asking the city for a zoning change to allow for a dispensary in the multitenant building. The company is owned by Jon Loevy, Michael Kanovitz and Richard Silverstein, according to state records.

A public hearing on the company’s request is set for 6 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St., DeKalb.

The company also wants “other approvals as required to accommodate the proposed use, including but not limited to reasonable restrictions relating to building and premises security and surveillance,” according to a public notice published in the Daily Chronicle.

mits for dispensaries in DeKalb and other locations. The company, he said, is founded on the principles of social justice, community activism and environmental sustainability.

If approved, Taylor said, Justice Grown would do more than operate

the dispensary.

“We want to be a pillar of the community,” he said.

The company has already met with city and police officials, Taylor said.

Illinois’ pilot medical marijuana program makes people with one of more than 40 conditions, such as glaucoma, post-traumatic stress disorder and Crohn’s disease, eligible to possess and use marijuana with a prescription.

The 2,800-square-foot space at 650 Peace Road would including a waiting area, consultation room, sales floor, vault and delivery and storage room.

The unit would also include a sally port, which would allow for safe and discreet deliveries. The space would have about 40 cameras able to recognize faces and license plate numbers.

Taylor said it would be “safer than the average bank.”

DeKalb Mayor John Rey said he didn’t have any concerns about the proposed dispensary and called the proposed location “reasonable.”

Sixth Ward Alderman Dave Baker said he’s been told there’s a need for a medical marijuana dispensary in the area and would rather see one built in DeKalb than Sycamore.

Sycamore approved a special-use permit in April 2015 for a dispensary at 1985 Gateway Drive, near other medical office buildings. The permit for the Dispensary LLC was extended in 2016, but is set to expire in April, Sycamore City Manager Brian Gregory said. If the permit lapses, the company would have to reapply for it.

Gregory said the Dispensary LLC is waiting on the state for permission. He said that since 2015, other companies have shown interest in bringing a dispensary to the area.

Ultimately, it will be up to the state.

Only one dispensary is allowed in each of its 60 dispensary districts, so there couldn’t be dispensaries in both Sycamore and DeKalb.

In DeKalb, the zoning change would have to be approved by the City Council. The mayor said the council could consider the matter at its Feb. 27 meeting.

Taylor encouraged residents to attend the public hearing Feb. 22. He said the company is eager to answer questions and clear up any misinformation about medical marijuana and Justice Grown’s plans.

Ill. Senate discusses budget privately, takes no vote

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Senate passed another day in Springfield without a vote on its much-anticipated budget compromise.

Democrats and Republicans discussed the plan separately in private meetings lasting hours Tuesday. But there were no votes on the plan.

For weeks, Democratic and Republican leaders have been discussing ways to break a nearly two-year budget stalemate.

Chicago Democratic Senate President John Cullerton and Republican leader Christine Radogno of Lemont hoped they had a compromise budget to present shortly after the new year. But they failed twice in January to call it for a vote.

The wide-reaching proposal would raise income taxes to tame a multibillion-dollar deficit. It also includes business-friendly changes in law and a local property tax freeze that Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner has insisted on.

Death of worker at Geneva tower ruled accidental

GENEVA – Authorities said the death of a maintenance worker at a Geneva tower has been classified as an accident.

An autopsy by the Kane County medical examiner’s office found that 47-yearold Donald Tentler of West Dundee died Friday of asphyxiation because of mechanical compression of his neck.

Toxicology tests are pending, but the coroner’s office said the death is being classified as accidental.

Officials said the worker was crushed in an aerial lift while working on a sign at Geneva Commons, a strip mall in Geneva.

Emergency crews found Tentler dead by the time they responded to a report of an industrial accident.

Illinois secretary of state seeks funds for mailings

CHICAGO – Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is asking lawmakers to help bring in money by allowing advertising on vehicle registration reminders that are mailed out to millions of homes each year.

The idea is to avoid a repeat of October 2015, when White’s office temporarily stopped mailing the annual renewal notice because of a lack of funding in the midst of the budget impasse, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The number of people fined for failing to register their vehicles in time skyrocketed during the 10 months the mailers didn’t go out.

Lawmakers eventually approved some money to resume the mailings, but that measure expired Jan. 1. White spokesman Dave Druker said the notices will continue for now, but that money will eventually be needed to keep them going.

About 9.6 million renewal notices are mailed annually, and it costs about $450,000 a month in postage to send the reminders. The office has tried to push email reminders to cut down on costs and prevent fines, but only 2.5 million drivers have signed up.

Druker said officials hope much of the cost could be covered if lawmakers approve legislation that would allow companies to buy advertising space on the notices.

Advertising chosen by the secretary of state’s office wouldn’t equal an endorsement of a product but strictly be a way to bring in more funds, Druker said.

Trucking bed, body company to add 250 jobs in Quincy

QUINCY – A trucking bed and body company said it plans to expand in western Illinois, eventually adding as many as 250 jobs.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reported Monday that Quincy-based Knapheide Manufacturing Co. will build an additional facility in Quincy over the next year.

The 188,000-square-foot facility will be just south of the company’s existing 480,000-square-foot facility. Construction is scheduled to start March 1 and be finished by Feb. 28, 2018.

Knapheide officials said the expansion will create 250 new jobs in manufacturing, installation and various support roles.

The company already has about 1,200 workers in Quincy and is one of the city’s

WASHINGTON – A former financial adviser has pleaded guilty to embezzling $1 million from four clients, including former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson and former NBA All-Star Glen Rice.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release that 55-year-old Brian Ourand of Chicago pleaded guilty to wire fraud Monday in federal court in Washington.

In his plea agreement, Ourand admitted to stealing money from his pro athlete clients for his personal use and others’.

Ourand’s employer reimbursed the athletes for their losses.

Ourand faces a term of 33 to 41 months in prison at sentencing on May 2. He also will be required to pay restitution.

Center to prepare inmates for life outside prison

KEWANEE – The Illinois Department of Corrections is opening its first facility for offenders nearing the end of their sentences where they can learn important life skills.

The Life Skills Re-entry Center is located in a former youth correctional site in the western Illinois town of Kewanee that had been targeted for closure.

The new facility will teach inmates skills to help them readjust to society outside of prison, such as how to manage a bank account, get a job or use the latest technology.

In a news release Monday, IDOC Director John Baldwin said the center is aimed at ending a “revolving door” in which nearly half of inmates who leave state custody return within three years.

The facility will begin taking inmates as early as Feb. 16.

Judges hammer attorneys in Muslim travel ban case

SAN FRANCISCO – President Donald Trump’s travel ban faced its toughest test yet Tuesday as a panel of appeals court judges hammered away at the government’s arguments that the ban was motivated by terrorism fears but also directed pointed questions to an attorney who claimed it unconstitutionally targeted Muslims.

The contentious hearing before three judges on the San Francisco-based 9th Circuit Court of Appeals focused narrowly on whether a restraining order issued by a lower court should remain in effect while a challenge to the ban proceeds. But the judges also jumped into the larger constitutional questions surrounding Trump’s order, which temporarily suspended the nation’s refugee program and immigration from seven mostly Muslim countries that have raised terrorism concerns.

The hearing was conducted by phone – an unusual step – and broadcast live from the court’s website to a record audience.

Judge Richard Clifton, a George W. Bush nominee, asked an attorney representing Washington state and Minnesota, which are challenging the ban, what evidence he had that the ban was motivated by religion.

“I have trouble understanding why we’re supposed to infer religious animus when in fact the vast majority of Muslims would not be affected.”

Only 15 percent of the world’s Muslims were affected, the judge said, citing his own calculations. He added that the “concern for terrorism from those connected to radical Islamic sects is hard to deny.”

Noah Purcell, Washington state’s solicitor general, cited public statements by Trump calling for a ban on the entry of Muslims to the U.S. He said the states did not have to show every Muslim is harmed, only that the ban was

motivated by religious discrimination.

Clifton also went after the government’s attorney, asking whether he denied statements by Trump and former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who said recently that Trump asked him to create a plan for a Muslim ban.

“We’re not saying the case shouldn’t proceed, but we are saying that it is extraordinary for a court to enjoin the president’s national security decision based on some newspaper articles,” said August Flentje, who argued the case for the Justice Department.

Under questioning from Clifton, Flentje did not dispute that Trump and Giuliani made the statements.

Judge Michelle T. Friedland, who was appointed by President Barack Obama, asked whether the government has any evidence connecting the seven nations to terrorism.

Flentje told the judges that the case was moving fast and the government had not yet included evidence to support the ban. Flentje cited a number of Somalis in the U.S. who, he said, had been connected to the al-Shabab terrorist group.

The ban has upended travel to the U.S. for more than a week and tested the new administration’s use of executive power.

The live broadcast of the oral arguments on the court’s YouTube site had 137,000 connections – by far the largest audience for an oral argument since the 9th Circuit began live streaming about two years ago, said David Madden, a spokesman for the court. Some news outlets also carried the live stream.

Whatever the court eventually decides, either side could ask the Supreme Court to intervene.

The government asked the appeals court to restore Trump’s order, saying that the president alone has the power to decide who can enter or stay in the U.S. Several states insist that it is unconstitutional.

JERUSALEM – A new Israeli law legalizing dozens of unlawfully built West Bank settlement outposts came under heavy criticism Tuesday from some of Israel’s closest allies, as local rights groups prepared to ask the Supreme Court to overturn the measure.

Amid the uproar, the Trump administration remained quiet about the law – paving the way for further possible action by emboldened Israeli hard-liners ahead of a trip to the White House

by Israel’s prime minister next week.

The law was “a first step in a series of measures that we must take in order to make our presence in Judea and Samaria present for years, for decades, for ages,” Israeli Cabinet Minister Yariv Levin said, using the biblical name for the West Bank. “I do believe that our right over our fatherland is something that cannot be denied.”

The law, passed late Monday, sets out to legalize dozens of West Bank settler outposts built on privately owned Palestinian land. Proponents claimed the communities, home to thousands of people and in some cases decades old, were built in “good faith” and quietly

and accused the Israeli government of “trying to legalize looting Palestinian land.”

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed “deep regret” over the bill, saying it was “in contravention of international law and will have far-reaching legal consequences for Israel.”

“The secretary-general insists on the need to avoid any action that would derail the two-state solution,” spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

Some of Israel’s closest allies, including Germany, Britain and the Czech Republic, also condemned the legislation.

Germany’s Foreign Ministry said its faith in Israel’s commitment to a twostate solution was “deeply shaken.”

Britain’s minister for the Middle East, Tobias Ellwood, said the law “damages Israel’s standing with its international partners.”

Jordan, a key Arab ally, said such “provocative acts” could “fuel the anger of Muslims and drag the region to more violence and extremism.”

Turkey’s tourism minister, Nabi Avci, visiting Israel as part of a reconciliation process, said he hoped Israel’s Supreme Court would make the “right decision” and strike down the law.

DeVos ekes out confirmation

VP Pence casts historic vote

WASHINGTON – Charter school advocate Betsy DeVos won confirmation as education secretary Tuesday by the slimmest of margins, pushed to approval only by the historic tie-breaking vote of Vice President Mike Pence.

Two Republicans, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, joined Democrats in a marathon effort to derail the nomination of the wealthy Republican donor. The Senate historian said Pence’s vote was the first by a vice president to break a 50-50 tie on a Cabinet nomination.

Despite the win, DeVos emerged bruised from the highly divisive nomination fight. Opposed by half the Senate, she faced criticism, even ridicule for lack of experience and confusion during her confirmation hearing. At one point, she said some schools should have guns because of the threat of grizzly bears.

And there has been scathing opposition from teachers unions and civil rights activists over her support of charter schools and her conservative religious ideology.

President Donald Trump accused Democrats of seeking to torpedo education progress. In a tweet before the vote, he wrote, “Betsy DeVos is a reformer, and she is going to be a great Education Sec. for our kids!”

DeVos was sworn in hours after the Senate vote by Pence, who told the new Cabinet member: “I wasn’t just voting for you. Having seen your devotion to improving the quality of education for some of our most vulnerable children

across the nation for so many years, I was also casting a vote for America’s children.”

“I can tell you, my vote for Betsy DeVos was the easiest vote I ever cast,” Pence said.

DeVos released a statement promising to be “a tireless advocate for all students.”

“Partnering with students, parents, educators, state and local leaders, Congress and all stakeholders, we will im-

prove education options and outcomes across America,” she said.

She now takes the helm of a department charged with implementing laws affecting the nation’s public schools with no direct experience with traditional public schools. Her opponents noted that she has no experience running public schools, nor has she attended one or sent her children to one.

She also will have to address several hot-button issues in higher education, such as rising tuition costs, growing student debt and the troubled for-profit colleges, many of which have closed down, leaving students with huge loans and without a good education or job prospects.

Close attention also will be paid to how DeVos deals with sexual assault and freedom of speech on campuses.

Ahead of Tuesday’s vote, emotions ran high as constituents jammed senators’ phone lines. Protesters gathered outside the Capitol, including one person in a grizzly bear costume to ridicule DeVos. Democrats and labor unions vigorously fought the nomination, suggesting that DeVos would defund traditional public schools by diverting taxpayers’ money to charter and private institutions. They cited her financial interest in organizations pushing for charter schools, although she has said she will divest those interests.

Afghanistan war gets little notice from Trump administration

WASHINGTON – Afghanistan, America’s longest military fight, is getting little attention so far from the Trump administration despite the protracted struggle to rein in the Taliban and battle a stubborn Islamic State affiliate there.

The conflict, now in its 16th year, got only a peripheral mention during President Donald Trump’s visit Monday to U.S. Central Command, which oversees the conflicts in the Middle East. And there’s little discussion of a revamped policy to beef up the Afghan security forces as they work to make their country secure.

America, Trump said in Tampa, expresses its gratitude to “everyone serving overseas, including our military personnel in Afghanistan.” That was it for a conflict that includes about 8,400 U.S. troops conducting counterterrorism operations against insurgents, and training and advising Afghanistan’s military.

The contrast with the U.S. effort to

defeat IS in Iraq and Syria has been striking. While Trump has given the Pentagon 30 days to come up with a new plan to defeat the self-described caliphate, there has been no similar order for Afghanistan. It’s unclear whether the White House simply wants to maintain Obama administration policies to bolster Afghan forces and keep some U.S. troops in the country for counterterror missions.

The Taliban has had “advances and eroded some of our successes,” Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said last month in his confirmation hearing, another venue where the Afghanistan conflict attracted scant interest. The silence has in some ways reinforced the notion of Afghanistan as a modern-day “forgotten war.”

At the Pentagon, however, there is widespread expectation Mattis will take a hard look at the campaign. A retired Marine general, Mattis commanded troops there in the early days of the war, after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. He is a strong supporter of the NATO coalition spearheading training and advis-

ing efforts.

Mattis spoke with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday, a day marked by a suicide bombing at the country’s Supreme Court in Kabul that killed at least 19 people. Recent attacks increasingly have targeted Afghanistan’s judiciary, underscoring the nation’s challenges.

Gen. John Nicholson, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, is expected to update Congress on the war Thursday.

Only four months ago, the Afghanistan fight was described as a stalemate.

In testimony to Congress in September, Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Afghan forces were taking a lot of casualties.

Nicholson was slightly more upbeat in December, saying the forces made progress last year despite being tested.

“What we’re seeing right now is what I would call an equilibrium, but one that’s in favor of the government,” Nicholson said at the time.

The Taliban controls about 10 percent of the population, he said. Afghanistan’s

government controls about two-thirds; the rest is contested.

Of the American forces in Afghanistan, more than 2,100 are conducting counterterrorism missions. The remainder are part of the training and advisory mission. Several hundred more U.S. forces are stationed outside the country, but can quickly deploy into the warzone from elsewhere in the region.

The military said U.S. forces conducted more than 1,000 strikes in Afghanistan last year, including 267 against the Islamic State Khorasan Province group, IS’ Afghan affiliate. Fifty-seven targeted al-Qaida.

About 300 Marines are scheduled to deploy to southern Afghanistan in April to help beef up the Afghan Army’s 215th Corps.

Corruption and leadership problems within the Afghan security forces are key concerns. Nicholson said those will be the focus this winter, as Afghans work to replace corrupt and ineffective leaders and get the troops the equipment, ammunition and food they need to fight.

Heed arguments for school choice It’s been a conversation too easy to shut down as those on various sides – including powerful unions – struggle to get beyond their own interests.

But the tone is different among school-choice advocates the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press editorial board met with recently. They bring a grass-roots, “here’s-what-we-should-do” approach that puts kids first.

Among the advocates, George Parker, former president of the Washington, D.C., teachers’ union, is a compelling convert to the school-choice movement.

He told us about re-examining his views, a process that required rethinking quality education “versus what was best for my union.” It began after a student he encountered at an event expressed her trust in Parker and his efforts on behalf of educators – while at the time his work involved a union settlement that “put a bad teacher back in school.”

Parker, keynote speaker at a forum at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs during his School Choice Week visit to the Twin Cities last month, explains that he grew up in North Carolina, before integration.

“I went to a school where there was no choice,” he told us. His path eventually led to bachelor’s and master’s degrees and 30 years of teaching high school and middle school math.

“We have to open up the doors,” Parker said.

Without a choice of quality education, he believes, children limited in their school choice by their ZIP code can be “doomed to a lifetime of poverty.”

The debate in Minnesota also foreshadows a likely national fight over whether students should get public help to pay private-school tuition.

Opponents of the Equity and Opportunity Scholarship idea, the Pioneer Press’ Christopher Magan reported, argue that the scholarship-donation approach is a “precarious step” toward a voucher system that would send taxpayer money to private and religious schools – making separation of church and state an issue – and draining money away from public schools that serve some of the most challenged students.

Business-sector backers bring additional power to advocates’ free-market argument. In essence: Let the competition among schools take place and let market choice weed out those that don’t perform to parents’ satisfaction.

When what we’re doing isn’t working – as schools fall short of their goal to serve all students – advocates’ arguments are worth hearing, and hearing well.

Gorsuch is a gift to the country “If you breathe air, drink water, eat food, take medicine, or in any other way interact with the courts, this is a very bad decision.” — Nancy Pelosi

My, my, she do get excited, no?

If you were on the fence about whether Neil Gorsuch should replace his like-minded fellow jurist on the nation’s top court, Pelosi’s statement should put you over that fence. Anybody who makes the decidedly former Speaker of the House that apoplectic can’t be all bad. Get him a robe, stat!

Only the most partisan, grudging and resentful of Washington politicians could find reasons to oppose this promotion for Gorsuch. The main reason most do, even if they don’t say it on the record, is because they had an opportunity before the election to replace Antonin Scalia with one of their own, thus changing the makeup of the United States Supreme Court for years, but Hillary Clinton blew the election.

So instead of crowding the court with lightweights who specialize in legalese and talk about the United States Constitution as a Living Document, whatever that means, they have in front of them another conservative, of all things, who might interpret the law instead of make it.

Not only that, but he’s young too. At all of 49 years old, he could follow in Scalia’s footsteps for decades. Say what you will about this president, he doesn’t have a tendency to go with easy or political savvy choices. Looking at his Cabinet so far, and this nomination, he apparently values competence over “diversity” and smooth political sailing.

So how extreme is Gorsuch?

So extreme that he was approved by the United States Senate to be a federal appeals court judge in Denver. Without one vote against him.

But, some of our friends on the left and The New York Times argue, this was a stolen seat! That

is, the last nominee didn’t get a fair hearing before the election.

The best Republican response comes from a former chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee who said that Supreme Court vacancies in the middle of presidential elections should be put off until the voters speak, because that’s “what history supports (and) common sense dictates.”

That was Joe Biden speaking as the Judiciary chairman during a Republican administration.

Dispatches say that Judge Gorsuch knows the need to protect the role of religion in America, is a proponent of a “strict reading” of the Constitution, and is often compared to, yes, Justice Scalia. That, and he has the temperament of a judge.

Call such temperament judicial.

So naturally Democrats promise to make things difficult.

But what a gift this nominee could be to the country.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The brilliance of ‘I Am Not Your Negro’ Death has this way of making truth-tellers seem harmless.

Alive, Martin Luther King provoked a president and divided a nation with his truth. Dead, he is an image on a commemorative place mat, his words safe enough for recitation by children.

This also holds, albeit to a lesser degree, for Malcolm X and Medgar Evers. Dead, they were no longer dangerous.

“We took out all the radicality of their legacy,” Raoul Peck said.

Peck is the director of “I Am Not Your Negro,” a documentary built on 30 pages of notes James Baldwin wrote for a book he never finished, a meditation on race, America and his three murdered friends: Medgar, Malcolm and Martin.

The film, which opened in wide release Friday, is a melange of arresting images, film clips and music framing Baldwin’s lacerating words as heard in archival footage and in readings by Samuel L. Jackson. It is nothing less than a masterpiece, fully deserving of its rave reviews and Oscar nomination and it demands

to be seen more than once. Trying to absorb everything it has to say in one sitting is like trying to catch Niagara in a teacup.

But what is most stunning about “Negro” is its prescience and, more to the point, what its prescience says about what America still is. Here are the words of a man who died in 1987 and yet, those words somehow contain Trayvon Martin, the Ferguson uprising, the election of Donald Trump and all the other broken promises.

“People finally say to you,” said Baldwin through Jackson, “in an attempt to dismiss the social reality: ‘But you’re so bitter.’ Well, I may or may not be bitter. But if I were, I would have good reasons for it, chief among them that American blindness or cowardice which allows us to pretend that life presents no reasons for being bitter.” As he speaks, you are

watching a kneeling Rodney King get kicked in the back of the head by a Los Angeles cop.

And you might, if you are African-American, want to shout hallelujah at hearing those who blithely chastise your “anger” thus elegantly rebuked.

“There are days,” says Baldwin, “... when you wonder what your role is in this country and what your future is in it. How, precisely, are you going to reconcile yourself to your situation here and how you are going to communicate to the vast, heedless, unthinking, cruel white majority that you are here?”

And you might, if you are African-American, want to bow your head and lift a hand to the ceiling, because you have wondered, too, but did not have the words to say.

“When the Israelis pick up guns,” says Baldwin, “or the Poles or the Irish or any white man in the world says ‘Give me liberty or give me death,’ the entire white world applauds. When a black man says exactly the same thing, word for word, he is judged a criminal and treated like

Baby girls are sometimes given masculine names. Does a girl become more masculine because of that?

Your name can also reveal your age. I was once introduced to someone by my full name (Mildred) and when he heard my name, he said, “You must be about 50, right?” He endeared himself to me immediately – NOT. Did I mention this happened years ago?

The Bible is often used as a source for names. The first name I thought of is Mary, of course. Then there is Sarah,

one and everything possible is done to make an example of this bad n----r so there won’t be any more like him.”

And you might, if you are African-American, just want to pat your feet and say, “Amen.” Even now. Even still.

“The scariest thing,” says Peck, “is that it is so precise and dead on the point of what is happening right now. ... We have been somehow in a sort of lethargy. We’ve been sleeping and we’ve been lazy. We’ve got Black History Month and we have Martin Luther King Day and we have new laws, et cetera, and we pretend as if everything is OK now. Which it’s not. We’ve just buried the corpse even deeper.”

If so, then “Negro” is a disinterment. More than a work of unparalleled brilliance, it is an urgent reminder that when it comes to race and America, the truth is not “safe.”

And it never was.

To the Editor: Donald Trump is the first Donald elected to the presidency.

I discovered six presidents were named James (“Jimmy” Carter, Garfield, Buchanan, Polk, Monroe and Madison) – more than any other first name.

Five presidents named John (Adams, Quincy Adams, Tyler, J. Calvin Coolidge, Kennedy).

Four presidents named William (Harrison, McKinley, Taft, “Bill” Clinton).

No other presidents have named Donald, even though Donald ranks 440th as a popular name in the U.S. One of Walt Disney’s famous cartoon

Ruth, Mathew, Mark, and the aforementioned James and John. No Goliath, though.

Is our personality influenced by our name?

Would I be different if my name were more glamorous? I guess not when you consider, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” from William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.”

ecarifio@shawmedia.com GENOA – Richmond-Burton girls basketball coach Todd Severns equated Genoa-Kingston to a buzzsaw after the Cogs’ 53-22 win Tuesday night.

Cogs coach Kyle Henkel said any machinery always can use a little oil.

“We did a lot of good things, but there’s always things to improve on,” Henkel said. “I know the girls hate that.”

The Cogs (19-6) scored nine of the 11 first points in the game, led 27-8 at halftime and pulled their starters with 1:07 left in the third quarter.

“We ran into a buzzsaw,” Severns said. “Genoa is really well-coached and shoots the ball. Defensively, I thought we did a good job in the first half, but when you score eight or nine points, it’s hard to compete. We had some good looks, and it’s hard to fault my girls’ effort. We played hard until the end, but we ran into a buzzsaw.”

Henkel said he was pleased with the Cogs’ defense, but thought it could have done better on the boards – the Rockets (10-14) had a 16-14 rebounding edge at halftime. They had seven offensive boards.

Julie Galauner was the only player in double figures, leading the Cogs with 17 points. Jessi Nay added nine.

The teams both were playing their second-to-last game before the postseason begins. The Rockets will play host Marian Central in the first round of their regional Tuesday, while the Cogs head to Sterling as the No. 2 seed.

Henkel said that although the team still is focused on finishing out the regular season, it still is working on things to improve before the postseason starts.

“We’re just trying to do everything we can to be ready for next week,” Henkel said. “We still have a pretty good opponent coming up here with Stillman (Valley), and we’re not trying to overlook anybody or anything like that, but we are talking about things

By the numbers: Samantha Miller led the Rockets with five points, Brooke Legnaioli scored three, and seven Rockets scored two. Mackenzie Hahn had six rebounds for the Rockets, and Gabby Janes led the Cogs with six. Nay had four steals.

Beyond the stats: After shooting 0 for 9 from 3-point range in the first half, Legnaioli opened the third quarter with a 3 for the Rockets. The Cogs followed with a 24-5 run.

They said it: “We’re not going to play

a team better than this one, unless you go really, really deep, and that helps,” Severns said. “I know we got Harvard Thursday and we have to be ready to go, and then our first game in the regional is Marian, and they’re a good team. They’re going to be a handful, and they have one of the best players in the area. We have to play Harvard first before we can worry about that, but playing a team like this can only help before regionals.”

Up next: The Cogs face Stillman Valley in a Big Northern Conference game, while the Rockets close out their inaugural Kishwaukee River Conference slate against Harvard.

The Huskies struggled offensively all night and fell, 65-45, Tuesday night at Buffalo, snapping a three-game road winning streak.

Coming into the game, the Huskies had wins at Toledo, Bowling Green and Kent State.

The Huskies (14-10 overall, 6-5 MAC West) struggled early and often against the Bulls, scoring a season-low 45 points. They finished shooting 18 for 56 (32.1 percent) from the field, 1 for 13 (7.7 percent) from 3-point range and 8 for 18

(44.4 percent) from the foul line.

“The first half we battled back early and we missed some layups and some easy shots,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said. “The second half we just had too many turnovers.”

NIU senior guard Aaric Armstead scored 10 of his team-high 12 points in the second half and finished 6 for 13 from the field for his fourth straight game in double figures. Freshman Eugene German scored all 10 of his points in the first half, helping the struggling Huskies to tie the score at 25 at halftime.

“We were excited to have it tied at 25 after halftime, but we couldn’t get ourselves going,” Montgomery said.

The Bulls (12-12, 6-5 MAC East) have won 12 consecutive games against NIU.

Illini pull away late to upset ’Cats NU getting new practice facility

EVANSTON – Northwestern is getting a new practice facility to go with a renovated arena.

The facility for men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and other programs was announced Tuesday. It will feature a fieldhouse with three courts that will be built inside an existing building adjacent to Welsh-Ryan Arena.

It also will include new training and strength-and-conditioning facilities, team meeting rooms, men’s and women’s basketball offices and staff locker rooms. The facility will allow for larger locker rooms in the arena for the basketball and volleyball teams.

A $110 million renovation of Welsh-Ryan Arena is set to begin this spring and be completed in the fall of 2018. The Wildcats will play next season at Allstate Arena in Rosemont.

The Associated Press EVANSTON – Malcolm Hill scored 14 points, and Illinois beat Northwestern, 68-61, Tuesday night.

Te’Jon Lucas, Maverick Morgan and Michael Finke each had 11 points, while Hill added nine rebounds for Illinois (14-11, 4-8 Big Ten).

Bryant McIntosh led Northwestern (18-6, 7-4) with 21 points, but he committed an uncharacteristic six turnovers and made four assists. Vic Law had 16 points and nine rebounds.

Tied at 28 at halftime, no team enjoyed more than a six-point lead in the back-and-forth second half until the game’s final moments. Lucas scored a layup with 1:37 remaining to put Illinois ahead, 63-61, and Michael Finke added to the lead with a jumper at 1:09.

After Law’s 3-pointer at 3:31, Northwestern missed its next three field goals and committed four turnovers.

The Wildcats’ 33.9 field goal percentage Tuesday was a season-worst.

The victory was Illinois’ first on the road this season.

Northwestern, which is chasing its first NCAA tournament berth, has followed a six-game winning streak with consecutive losses. The Wildcats fell to then-No. 23 Purdue, 80-59, Saturday.

Lindsey remains out: Scottie Lindsey missed his second straight contest with mononucleosis, and the team is unsure when he will return. Lindsey leads Northwestern with 16.1 points a game, and the Wildcats have scored 52 and 61 points in his absence, two of their three lowest point totals this season.

Closing in: The Wildcats inch ever closer to their first NCAA tournament berth, but their first back-to-back losses since Dec. 30 and Jan. 5 have derailed momentum. The upcoming schedule provides little relief, as Northwestern’s next two are against the Big Ten’s best – No. 7 Wisconsin and No. 21 Maryland.

AD confident in program dogged by issues

The Associated Press LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger understands people might have questions about the legal issues surrounding the Jayhawks’ storied basketball program, an avalanche of off-the-court news that in recent weeks has cast a shadow over Allen Fieldhouse.

He also hopes people understand many of them cannot be discussed publicly.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Zenger maintained his confidence in Kansas coach Bill Self’s handling of the program and insisted the athletic department has “a very healthy” relationship with the university and local law enforcement.

“There are many legal and ethical reasons I can’t discuss anything that’s ongoing, primarily any investigations,” Zenger said. “All I can tell you is this university and this athletic department will forever be committed to its core values, and its priorities of all students, staff and guests.”

Still, the past few weeks have been dominated by headlines the Jayhawks could do without.

It began with news that police are investigating a reported rape at McCarthy Hall, the $12 million dormitory that houses the men’s basketball team and other students. No suspects have been identified in connection with the incident the night of Dec. 17. Five members of the team are listed as witnesses, but no charges have been filed.

During the investigation, police uncovered two glass Sheahon smoking devicZenger es with residue inside. Sophomore forward Carlton Bragg Jr. was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia in that case and suspended, a punishment that was lifted this week when he was granted diversion. Bragg also was arrested in December after an altercation with a woman, but a charge of domestic violence was dropped when video evidence suggested he was acting in self-defense.

More bad news hit last week when The Kansas City Star reported sophomore guard Lagerald Vick might have struck a female student two years ago.

The school’s Office of Institutional Opportunity and Access investigated the case and recommended he receive school probation.

Meanwhile, star freshman Josh Jackson and Vick have

been linked to a vandalism investigation from an incident in December, when a vehicle sustained nearly $3,000 in damage outside a Lawrence bar.

Those are damaging cases individually. Taken collectively, the reports have overshadowed just about everything the thirdranked Jayhawks have accomplished on the court, from their win over Kentucky at Rupp Are-

na to their defeat of then-No. 2 Baylor to their season sweep of rival Kansas State. The team’s pursuit of a 13th Big 12 Conference title is alive and well.

“I can’t really speak to why or how that’s happened,” Zenger said of the cases stacking up. “All I can tell you is we have to stay focused on being true to our values.”

Yet the legal issues have put Self in a delicate situation.

On the one hand, he has to maintain order within a program that some critics argue already has gone rogue, where athletes who generate millions of dollars for the school often appear coddled or favored. On the other hand, his players deserve to be treated like anybody else accused of a crime or misconduct, and that means allowing any investigations to run their course.

“We don’t have anything to do with how the police does their job, nor would we interfere,” Self said. “I would tell you this, Carlton Bragg or your son or your daughter or anybody else who is a student here should be treated the exact same. I’m not running from that at all.”

Police still searching for missing Brady jersey

HOUSTON – Tom Brady and his missing jersey still have not been reunited.

The investigation, which is being led by the Houston police department’s Major Offenders division, so far has not turned up any leads on who swiped the jersey, Houston Police Executive Assistant Chief George Buenik said Tuesday.

The Texas Rangers, the state’s top law enforcement officers, are assisting in the investigation along with the NFL’s security department.

Brady’s jersey was taken from the New England Patriots’ locker room at Houston’s NRG Stadium after the

team’s 34-28 victory over Atlanta in the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Buenik said officials are aware the jersey is considered valuable.

“So we are deeming this a pretty important case,” Buenik said at a news conference held the same day the Patriots were celebrating their win with a Boston parade. “We want our top investigators on this case, and, hopefully, we’ll make an arrest, and more importantly recover that jersey for Tom Brady.”

Buenik said investigators are working to identify who was in the locker room at the time the jersey was taken.

Police also are trying to determine who had access to the locker room, but that could be a long list as players, all the

coaches, team support staff and members of the media all had access, he said.

Although a Houston police officer was stationed outside the locker room, access to the location was controlled by New England Patriots team security, Buenik said.

“We’re attempting to gather a list of people who were in that locker room at that point so we can interview them,” he said.

Investigators also are working to obtain video, including from some news cameramen, that might have caught the crime on tape.

“We are asking all the cameramen to check your video to see if they may have captured something,” Buenik said. “Police investigators maybe con-

tacting you so we can look to see in an attempt to identify everybody in that locker room at the time.”

Crime Stoppers of Houston also will be offering a reward for any information leading to the stolen jersey and to the arrest of the person who took it, Buenik said.

When asked about the need for police to get involved in the search for a missing jersey, Buenik said, “Our Major Offenders squad deals with all kinds of specialty cases.”

“Texas Rangers offered their assistance along with NFL security, private security at [the stadium],” he said.

“We are going to take everybody’s assistance and offers to see if they can help us.”

BOSTON – Snow, rain and chilly temperatures didn’t dampen the joy of New England Patriots fans exulting in their team’s latest championship Tuesday.

The five-time Super Bowl winners received a hero’s welcome as they paraded through downtown Boston aboard World War II-era duck boats that have become a staple of the city’s recent title celebrations.

Sounds of “Brady! Brady!” “TB12!” and “MVP” rang out throughout the procession as fans proudly wore No. 12 jerseys over thick parkas and sweaters, holding signs declaring star quarterback Tom Brady the G.O.A.T. – the greatest of all time.

Brady grinned and just took it all in, at one point tossing footballs back and forth with fans on the route as the duck boats rumbled along.

“We’re going to remember this one for the rest of our lives, and we know you will, too,” he shouted from a stage at the parade’s end at City Hall. “I told you we were going to bring this sucker home, and we brought it home!”

Cannons shot out red, white and blue confetti along the route, which started near the Boston Marathon finish line, where three spectators were killed and 260 others wounded in bombing attacks in April 2013. The route wound past famous city landmarks such as historic Faneuil Hall and the Boston Common.

Fans still were in disbelief over New England’s stunning 34-28 comeback win in overtime against the Atlanta Falcons.

Fan-favorite Rob Gronkowski, who went down with an injury before the team’s playoff run, energized the crowd with his typical Gronk antics.

The tight end took off his shirt and chugged beers tossed up to the duck boats by fans, while other players held a wrestling championship-style belt over his head.

Some players waved black “Roger That” T-shirts showing fists with five championship rings as fans reciprocated with their own handmade signs deriding NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

There’s little love for Goodell in Patriots Nation after he handed Brady a four-game suspension at the start of the season for his role in the “Deflategate” scandal, a dispute that wound through federal court twice as the NFL found Brady responsible for using underinflated footballs during a playoff game in 2015.

Once again on Tuesday, the 39-yearold Brady unquestionably was the center of attention.

The crowd showered the MVP of Super Bowl LI with chants of “MVP” and “We Want Six” as the snow, which fell in thick wet clumps most of the morning, broke just long enough for Brady and others to speak onstage.

Coach Bill Belichick said this year’s team was the hardest-working group he ever has coached.

“They came to work every day and there were no days off,” he said.

The typically gruff, no-nonsense coach led the crowd of thousands, who likely skipped school or work to fete their team, in an impromptu chant: “No days off!”

Hawks to take on Central-leading Wild on the road

Cruising into the playoffs is nothing new for the Hawks, but with so many rookies on the team – players who could be approaching the rookie wall, or who never have had to “flip the switch” come playoff time – it’s important to keep the intensity up.

Fighting for a division title could be the happy medium between a frantic playoff push and a casual stretch-run stroll.

“We have a lot of rookies on our team, so I think it’s good to keep it constant and keep it going,” veteran Brian Campbell said. “You’ve seen the shot blocks in the last few games. We’re definitely sacrificing a lot more and trying to get this done.”

A loss in either or both of the upcoming Wild games hardly would be a fatal blow for the Hawks. They’ll make the playoffs regardless. So “meaningful” is a relative term. But it could mean the difference between having something to play for, and just playing out the string.

“And keep [Minnesota] honest, too,” coach Joel Quenneville added. “You want to finish first, you want to win as often as possible. You want to push the team ahead of you, if you’re not there.

Certainly, there’s a gap there [that] we’re looking to close. It’s meaningful in a lot of ways.”

Butler wants Wade to stay beyond next season

jcowley@suntimes.com SAN FRANCISCO – Jimmy Butler doesn’t want Dwyane Wade going anywhere.

Obviously, not the remainder of this season. He definitely doesn’t want Wade opting out of his contract and going elsewhere next season. Heck, if it’s up to Butler, the Bulls should extend Wade for a few more years.

“All I know is I want him being my teammate for a long time,” Butler said. “I’ve learned so much already. He makes my job easier, and the jobs of everyone else in here easier. As long as he keeps playing like he is now, keeps evolving, he should stay here, finish things out here.”

It wasn’t just Butler’s bromance with the future Hall of Famer talking, either.

Even with Wade turning 35 a few weeks ago, Butler sees a player evolv-

ing with age. Not only in games, but firsthand on the practice court.

“The thing is, as I studied his game, study my game, study the game in general, and I try and give him my looks on the game, how I would defend him,” Butler said. “Not only me, but how coaches have told us how to defend him. He tells me the same thing.

“Like the [Kings game Monday night], I was telling him late, Jimmy Butler ‘This is what they are doing.’ He knows it, but I also know what he’s been working on and how he can beat it. We work on all of that when we go to the gym together. People don’t see how much he and I are in the gym working on simple things to evolve our games. The moves he takes late in games are never a bad shot because we work on those in practice every single day. And he’s not stopping.”

That’s only one of the reasons Butler has so much respect for Wade. At the same time a big reason he didn’t respect Derrick Rose.

Butler never had a personal problem with Rose. It was business. Butler is in the business of hard work, evolving, getting better. He didn’t see that with Rose.

As one source put it, “What Derrick considered a hard day’s work, Jimmy saw it as just his Dwyane Wade warm-up.”

Like Rose, Wade doesn’t practice with the team often, but Wade works out privately with Butler, and also has three rings that has earned him the benefit of the doubt.

“He’s a guy that can play as long as he wants,” Butler said of Wade. “He’s willing to transform his game; he takes care of his body.”

And when called upon, as he was in

the Kings win, Wade still can put up 31 points, including the final five points of the game.

“One thing I added is, I go right better,” Wade said of his evolution in this season alone. “Normally, I would always go left. I really worked hard on going right to be comfortable. I think I’m actually shooting better this year going right than going left.

“You always want to learn. The game changes so fast in this league, you always want to still be around and still be effective.

“I’m 35, that’s true. By basketball standards, I’m considered old, that’s true. I’m not as athletic as I used to be, that’s true.

But I play basketball. I know it’s different. It’s a different game for me. Some nights, it’s like I’m in my prime. I’m a different player. Not as young as I used to be. But just as I told the [Sacramento] crowd when they was calling me old, they’d love to have me on their team.”

Butler certainly does.

On the last day of the 2010-11 season, April 10, the Blackhawks nervously gathered around their TVs to watch the Dallas Stars play the Minnesota Wild. If Dallas won, the Hawks would miss the playoffs. If Minnesota won, the Hawks were in. Complicating matters, the Wild – out of the playoff picture – were icing a bunch of minor-leaguers in a game that was meaningless to them.

Minnesota somehow won, 5-3, on two third-period goals.

“All of a sudden, you’ve got a second life,” Patrick Kane said. “But sometimes, when you’re fighting for that spot, and you see teams playing like it’s playoff hockey in Games 50 or 60, it can wear on you a little bit.”

Indeed, by that point, the Hawks had been in playoff mode for weeks, if not months. Corey Crawford, then a rookie, started the final 27 games of the regular season as every point was

ty safe, as the Hawks have a healthy 11-point lead on third-place Nashville.

The only question left is whether the Hawks can catch first-place Minnesota for the division lead. And considering the Wild have a four-point lead and three games in hand, tonight’s game in St. Paul (and a rematch, also in St. Paul, 13 days later) could go a long way toward determining whether the Hawks have anything at all to play for over the final six weeks or so of the season.

“That’s the motivation, front and center, right there,” Jonathan Toews said. “We’ll be thinking about that.

We’ve still got a ways to go, [but] every chance we get against this team, we know it can be a four-point swing.”

Kane called it “our biggest game of the year,” and it’s hard to argue. The Hawks won three straight playoff series over the Wild from 2013 to ’15, but Minnesota has beaten the Hawks in eight straight regular-season contests.

If the Hawks can’t stop that streak tonight at the XCel Energy Center, they could be all but locked into second place, barring a significant Hawks winning streak and/or a significant Wild losing streak.

That’s the flip side of the all-out playoff sprint from 2011. Take your foot off the gas and coast into the playoffs, and you might not be mentally and physically drained, but you also might

If Bennett doesn’t want to visit Trump, so be it

This column needs some background.

Here goes.

Eight years ago veteran sportswriter Bill Gleason called me.

“Telander,” he said (He called everyone by his last name), “there’s an old Bear named Bob Kilcullen down in Dallas, and he says there’s a kid walking across the United States, east to west, a former Army Ranger who went to Notre Dame, speaking to NFL groups and whatnot about unselfishness and greed. The kid’s near Dallas now.

I called, and the old Bears lineman, who is now 80, did indeed chat on about this young man, Rory Fanning, who was full of idealism and passion. But Killcullen’s verbal enthusiasm touched me, and I decided to check out this Rory Fanning.

Funny how nobody said much when four Cubs players didn’t go to the White House a month ago to shake hands with President Barack Obama. And few howled when Patriots superstar Tom Brady skipped the Pats’ 2015 meeting with Obama. Where was Brady that day? ESPN reported he was working out at a gym. Brady, of course, is a personal pal of Trump’s. So be it.

You make your decisions in life – you live with them.

A walk in the desert eight years ago reminded me of that, and it makes me salute Martellus Bennett today.

Cupcakes perfect for your valentine

This old-fashioned cherry cupcake is just the thing for Valentine’s Day. I’ve updated a cake my mother used to make for my sisters and me when we were children with all the flavors of a bourbon Old-Fashioned. The rosy pink color of the cake immediately brings to mind the Feast of Saint Valentine.

When I drink Old-Fashioneds, I seldom add cherries, but the cherries are essential to this cake. The cake is colored a beautiful rosy pink by the addition of maraschino cherry juice and a generous amount of chopped cherries that add texture and moisture to the light white cake. The cake itself tastes like the best vanilla cake you have ever eaten with a soft nod to the maraschino cherries. A fragrant orange-bourbon buttercream tops the cupcakes and completes the adult “Old-Fashioned” flavor.

When making this cake for a mixed age crowd, you can make two versions of the boozy icing and eliminate the bourbon for the under-21 crowd. The

orange buttercream brings a bright taste of sunshine to what sometimes can be dreary days in February, with or without the bourbon.

These Old-Fashioned cupcakes make me very happy – and I think they’ll do the same for you.

Cherry Cupcake with Orange-Bourbon Frosting Servings: 20 Start to finish: 40 minutes

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened 1 1/8 cups granulated white sugar 2¼ cups cake flour or 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 3/4 teaspoon fine sea salt 1/4 cup maraschino cherry juice 1/2 cup whole milk 1/2 generous cup chopped maraschino cherries (about 1 cup of un-chopped cherries) 4 egg whites, stiffly beaten Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Using an electric mixer, cream together but-

ter and sugar until fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.

In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt. Stir in alternatively with the cherry juice and the milk. Remove from electric mixer and stir the chopped cherries into the cake batter. Fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites.

Prepare a regular cupcake pan by placing liners in each mold. Fill each cupcake 3/4 of the way full. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

Let cool on a rack and make the frosting.

Bourbon Old-Fashioned Frosting 1 box (1 pound) powdered sugar Pinch of fine-grain sea salt ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened ½ generous teaspoon pure vanilla extract ½ teaspoon orange extract 2 tablespoons heavy cream 1-2 tablespoons bourbon, depending on taste Zest of one large navel orange Sift box of powdered sugar and salt or whisk well to remove any lumps. Set aside.

Cream butter until fluffy using a stand mixer or a hand mixer set on medium speed.

Slowly add the sugar. When the sugar is incorporated in the butter, add vanilla extract, cream and bourbon one tablespoon at a time until your desired consistency is reached.

Stir in orange zest at the end. Taste and add more bourbon only if you want it to taste a little boozier. If it is too stiff, add a little more cream. If it is too loose, add more sugar.

Taste for balance and add a touch more salt and vanilla if needed. Spread on top of cupcakes or place in a pastry bag fitted with a large star tip and decorate in a swirl pattern. Top with a pink conversation heart or stemmed cherry, if desired.

King crab legs cheaper at home Make the most out of leftovers with a bisque

Nothing says indulgence like noshing on some seriously giant Alaskan King Crab legs.

They’re not just tasty, they’re a low-fat source of protein – one leg has about 25 grams of protein, and a whole host of vitamins and minerals (including sodium, incidentally, so a heads-up if you are watching salt), but only a couple of grams of fat. Which gives you a little celebratory wiggle room to add a little lemon butter – mix 1 tablespoon of melted butter with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice.

But all this goodness does come at a price. Literally, crab legs are pricey.

So my strategy is to buy them for a date night with my husband instead of going out to dinner. We can load up on Alaskan King Crab legs for less than the cost of one meal at a moderate restaurant.

My favorite way to eat them is simple: steamed and then cracked open and dunked in my lemony butter. The succulent sweet meat absolutely will elevate your macaroni and cheese, tacos or salads, so feel free to experiment in recipes and swap out fish or shrimp for crab. But I’m a purist and love that unmistakable flavor of Alaskan crab front and center, not diluted in other ingredients.

But here is the secret I want to tell you about today: after you’ve enjoyed that restaurant-quality meal at home, keep those shells, because you can get a whole second crab dish from that one purchase by making crab bisque the next day. (Or, stick shells in a freezer bag and freeze them for a couple of weeks, if you want to space out the crab meals.)

Tossing the shells in a hot oven for just a couple of minutes brings out a roasty-crab aroma that will create quick depth of flavor for a speedy homemade stock, even if you don’t have a ton of shells. (Cheat sheet tip: You also can boost the flavor by adding a little bottled clam juice to your stock.)

The stock then can be added to a simple roux, a little sherry and a bit of low-fat evaporated milk for a creamy, satisfying soup that tastes fattier and more expensive than it is.

Crab Bisque

Start to finish: 1 hour 15 minutes, including 1 hour inactive cooking time Servings: About 6 servings, 1 cup each Stock: Shells from 2 pounds of Alaskan King crab legs 1 teaspoon olive oil 1 carrot, chopped 2 celery stalks, chopped 1 small yellow onion, roughly chopped 1 teaspoon dried tarragon 2 tablespoons tomato paste 3 cloves garlic, smashed 1/2 cup dry white wine 2 tablespoons lemon juice 8 cups water 1 bay leaf Soup: 2 tablespoon butter 2 tablespoons flour 1/2 cup dry sherry 6 cups crab stock 1/2 cup organic 2 percent evaporated milk 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper Crab meat, for garnish (optional, if you happen to have leftovers) Make the stock: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Place the crab shells on a baking sheet and roast them in the hot oven until fragrant, about 5-7 minutes.

Meanwhile, place the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat and cook the carrot, celery onion and tarragon until vegetables begin to soften, about five minutes, stirring frequently.

Add the tomato paste and garlic, stir and cook until fragrant and tomato paste deepens in color, about two more minutes. Pour the wine and lemon juice into the pan and let it bubble for a minute or two. Add the crab shells, 8 cups of water and bay leaf. Bring to a simmer, cover and let simmer on low for about 1 hour.

Strain out the solids using a fine-meshed sieve, and set the stock aside. You should have about six cups. (If not, add enough water, clam juice, or chicken stock to make it six cups.)

Make the soup: In a soup pot, melt the

butter and add the flour, whisking into a thick paste. Allow to cook and bubble for one minute. Add the sherry and whisk as it bubbles and thickens. Slowly add the crab stock, whisking to incorporate the stock into the thickened roux (flour mixture). Bring the soup to a boil and simmer over low heat for 3-5 minutes, until it thickens a little. Stir in the evaporated milk, garnish with crab meat (optional) and serve.

KC accepting Simon Essay submissions DAILY CHRONICLE Kishwaukee College is accepting submissions for the Illinois Community College Trustees Association 2017 Paul Simon Student Essay Contest.

The competition is open to all currently enrolled Kishwaukee College students with the award for the selected winner being a $500 spring semester tuition reimbursement. Applications are available at the Kishwaukee College Financial Aid Office and from Kishwaukee College English faculty, as well

as downloadable on myKC, the student portal. The deadline for submission of the completed application and essay is Feb. 17.

Students entering the competition must submit an essay on the following topic: How My Community College Has Changed My Life. The essay must be 500 words or less and be typed. Each essay submitted will be evaluated by members of the Kishwaukee College English faculty and will be judged on the basis of writing style, clarity of expression, and relevancy to topic with special emphasis placed on

correct grammar and punctuation. Any essay not following the stated rules will be disqualified.

The Kishwaukee College winner also will have his/her essay entered into the state competition for an additional $500 stipend toward fall 2017 educational expenses. The state winner will be invited to attend the Illinois Community College Trustees Association Banquet in Springfield in June.

Andres Leon-Hernandez, an eighth-grade student at Clinton Rosette Middle School in DeKalb, won the school’s National Geographic Bee and a chance to move on to the state competition. The school bee was Jan. 24. Qualifying students answered questions related to U.S. and world geography. Other students who competed were Jason Pedraza (first runner-up), Joey Newport (second runner-up), Brogan Long, Lama Ghrayeb, Jessenia Ramirez, Jimena Rodriguez, Yu Xuan Ni, Reyna Casteneda and Joel Panders. As school champion, Leon-Hernandez will take a written test that will determine his eligibility to move on to the state round of competition. The state winner will compete in Washington, D.C., in the final round of the National Geographic Bee.

The study did not find any difference in death rates between those who had physicals and those who didn’t. However, in one case, what the authors defined as the group receiving health checkups amounted to one physical over a 22-year period. In fact, participants in eight of the 14 studies evaluated had only one physical exam done for the time frame of their studies.

Obviously, the question needs to be studied further – and electronic medical records give us the ability to do this. The critics of routine health checkups say they lead to unnecessary testing, possibly harmful tests and cost about $10 billion per year.

Yet I find that the most important aspect of the health checkup is the time to sit with patients -- to talk to them about their level of exercise, their diet, their drug habits and their level of sleep; to review whether they’re having shortness of breath, chest pains, or problems with urination or bowel movements – and many times to learn about the stressors in their lives. This time is an important aspect to the doctor-patient relationship and is difficult to quantify.

So, if you are healthy, 45 years old and not on any medications, I would recommend that you get a health checkup every two years. But, of course, put your trust in your own primary care doctor’s opinion regarding this matter.

Dear Doctor: I’m a 45-year-old man without any major medical problems. Is it worth it for me to get yearly physicals with my primary care doctor?

Dear Reader: I have generally encouraged annual physical exams for most of my patients in their 40s and beyond. I schedule more time for this type of examination so that I can collect a history of a patient’s lifestyle, conduct a review of their symptoms, and determine whether they have had the recommended colonoscopies, mammograms and vaccinations. With both the history and the physical examination, I learn aspects of the patient’s health that were often not known to me prior. From my subjective vantage point as a primary care doctor, I find value in these visits. But objectively, the benefit of physical exams is less clear.

Take a 1986 study comparing death rates of more than 5,000 men between the ages of 35 and 54 who’d had six health checkups to more than 5,000 men who’d had one checkup.

Over a 16-year period, researchers found a decrease in death rates from colon cancer and hypertension among those men who had more checkups, but they found no decrease in death rates from other causes.

A 2007 article in the Annals of Internal Medicine reviewed 33 studies assessing the efficacy of health checkups. Researchers tried to determine if physicals caused benefit, caused harm, or had no impact on a patient’s health.

The largest benefit seen from physicals was through an increase in colon cancer screening. A more intermediate benefit was seen through the administration of Pap smears and cholesterol checks. The physicals also showed a benefit in decreasing worry among patients.

However, overall, the results showed no benefit seen in regard to death rates. The biggest problem with this assessment is that the different studies included so many variables, reaching conclusions proved difficult.

When I described the play in four spades yesterday, South took the first trick with dummy’s heart ace, cashed his spade, diamond and club winners, then endplayed West by leading his heart jack. Fine, but what might have happened if declarer, instead of giving West the lead in hearts at trick seven, had exited with a trump? Also, what could have transpired if South had not won the first trick?

North might have cue-bid four hearts over three spades to show a strong raise to four spades (and promise nothing about hearts).

If South throws West in with his trump or ducks the first trick, the contract can be defeated.

In the first case, after winning with his spade queen, West must resist the temptation to cash the heart queen. Instead, he must lead a low heart to declarer’s jack. Then South will have to lose one diamond and two clubs to East, along with the spade already conceded.

That defense should not be too hard to find, but the other one really takes some imagination. After the heart king and a heart to the ace, when declarer cashes his two top trumps, West must throw the 10 and queen under them! Then he cannot be endplayed, and the contract will go down one. After the deal, probably South would congratulate West on his great play, then say that if only West had had the spade four and dummy the spade three, the contract would still have made.
