YESTERDAY’S RESULTS

On Monday, I stepped outside the Daily Chronicle office on Barber Greene Road in DeKalb and squinted against the sun. The temperature was 50 degrees, about 20 degrees above the average high for Feb. 6.

I looked across the parking lot, where a flock of Canada geese was lazily making its way across a field of yellow grass.

Bleah.

Since Christmas, it seems like someone turned off winter. It’s like that feeling you get when you discover that the freezer door has been left open for several hours. Things that ought to be frozen or packed in ice are now thawed out and mushy. It just feels wrong.

January was warmer than normal. We had less than a half-inch of snowfall in DeKalb for the whole month.

At Casa de Olson, the sleds are sitting idle in the backyard, the snow that once was under them long since melted away. Around northern Illinois, it’s been a winter of lost opportunities. Ice activities planned for late January – usually about as reliable an ice time as there is – have been called off in places including DeKalb and Crystal Lake.

On Monday, there was no snow cover in the entire state.

The thing is, this doesn’t make winter any better. In some ways, it’s worse.

It still gets dark early. It still gets chilly at night. But instead of a fresh blanket of snow to cover things in white and add light to the evenings, we have dead grass, open water and this lingering sense that things aren’t quite right.

EDITOR’S NOTE Eric Olson expecting this kind of weather this season. I spoke to meteorologist Charlie Mott, who said that the wet conditions on the East and West coasts have led to a mild weather pattern here in the Midwest.

The mild weather this winter probably will continue, with only a few shots of cold air breaking the monotony, Mott said.

It’s part of a broader weather trend where the seasons just aren’t quite behaving the way we expect. He said it’s been noticeable since winter 2012, which was the fourth warmest for the continental U.S. (Winter 2000 was the warmest.)

“We’ve been kind of trending toward periods of having so-called normal weather, … but what we haven’t had is seasons where you get (weather) throughout the season that you would normally think you would get.

“It appears that there’s a change, but we haven’t had enough data saying, yes, we absolutely have.“ It would be a shame if we just don’t have winter anymore. It’s been part of my life for almost 40 years, and it turns out I kind of miss it when it doesn’t come.

TODAY’S TALKER HOUSTON – Of the five Super Bowl rings Robert Kraft has earned as owner of the New England Patriots, one of them has an unlikely owner: Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Kraft took part in a recent NFL Network series of interviews about Super Bowl rings and retold a story about his ring from 2005’s Super Bowl 39.

He said he was on a business trip to Russia later that year when he showed the ring to Putin. Kraft said Putin put on the ring and didn’t give it back.

DeKalb mayoral candidates talk about developing city’s economy

DeKALB – Economic development was a primary topic of discussion as all four mayoral candidates outlined their plans for the city during an open forum Monday at the DeKalb Elks Club at 209 S. Annie Glidden Road.

John Smith of the Kiwanis Club of DeKalb, which sponsored the forum, estimated that about 150 to 175 people attended the event. Attendees were able to submit questions for the candidates as they walked in, and topics ranged from the use of renewable energy to the suggestion of whether DeKalb should be a sanctuary city.

Mayor John Rey said that one of the highest priorities of his platform is to encourage economic development.

In order to accomplish this, Rey recommends maintaining a business-friendly atmosphere to draw industries, gathering diverse input and promoting the attraction of community assets.

The need for the city to be more business-friendly was a requirement mirrored by challengers Jerry Smith, Misty Haji-Sheikh and Michael Embrey.

Smith said he would be “laser-focused” on economic development and would look into new construction projects in his first 100 days.

He also said he would be actively involved with community partners – such as the DeKalb County government, DeKalb County Economic Development Corp., Northern Illinois University and the DeKalb County Community Foundation, of which he served as executive director for 10 years – to uphold the city’s 2025 Strategic Plan.

Embrey, a local businessman and entrepreneur, said that some area business owners he has spoken with have experienced conflicts with City Hall that have prevented them from growing, and that the city should be more supportive to local businesses.

The use of city resources, such as NIU and an abundant water supply, also was highlighted in her plans to attract new business.

Candidates were asked about supporting social services agencies after these groups faced steep funding cuts

during budget talks in November.

Smith said that the city should be giving a helping hand to these agencies.

Embrey said that although the city should provide funding, it also should fall on community members to give back and provide additional revenue.

Haji-Sheikh said an application process could be considered for any of the agencies that are not one of the 11 orga-

nizations that are budgeted and report quarterly to the city.

“I see them doing a lot of unsung work,” she said.

Rey said he supports social service agencies as an important part of the fabric of the community, but the city does have to look into core service spending during budget talks.

In order to combat decreased property values within the city, Haji-Sheikh said that the handling of city issues, such as crime and poor roads, will help bring those values back up.

Rey said that the city needs to look at long-term sources of revenue to help provide for core city services that could improve property values.

Embrey said the city could start by improving the perception that DeKalb might not be a good community to live in because of high crimes or high taxes.

Smith said this will be a long-term process and the city could start to turns things around by being more business-friendly.

The League of Women Voters also will host a public forum for the candidates Feb. 23, and the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce will hold one March 8.

Psychologist, author and former NFL player Robert Watts will speak May 11 at the Kishwaukee Family YMCA’s 2017 Y Community Awards Dinner. Watts said he depended on the YMCA as “a place of refuge and opportunity” while he was growing up in New York City.

“The Y was very much an important component in my young development in New York,” Watts said. “It kept me out of trouble and gave me a place where I could go be with other kids in a healthy, safe environment.”

Watts will be the featured speaker at the Kishwaukee Family YMCA’s annual awards dinner May 11.

Each year, the awards honor community members who “are working every day to make DeKalb County a better place,” according to the event website. Awards include the Youth Leader Award, the Emerging Leader Award and the Outstanding Community Leader Award.

The deadline for nominations is April 7. The dinner will be at 5 p.m. May 11 at Faranda’s Banquet and Conference Center, 302 Grove St.

Prosecutor to investigate McCullough case allegations Possible misconduct includes police perjury, other wrongdoing

By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A lawyer with the State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor’s office in Springfield will investigate allegations of police perjury and other possible wrongdoing in the prosecution of Jack McCullough.

Brian Towne will serve as the special prosecutor in the case. Towne is part of the special prosecution unit of the State’s Attorney Appellate Prosecutor’s office.

The unit consists of trial attorneys who assist in prosecuting criminal cases, according to the office’s website.

Towne previously served as the LaSalle County state’s attorney, according to his biography on the State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor’s office website.

Former DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack asked a DeKalb County judge in August to have a special prosecutor investigate

whether a Seattle police detective committed perjury, as well as other possible misconduct in the prosecution of McCullough.

Towne was appointed Friday after the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and prosecutors from nine Illinois counties declined to look into the allegations, which arose last year after McCullough’s conviction was vacated in the 1957 murder of Maria Ridulph, 7, of Sycamore.

At the time he filed the motion, Schmack said video evidence contradicted statements made by both DeKalb County prosecutors and Seat-

tle police Detective Irene Lau in pretrial proceedings and McCullough’s September 2012 trial.

McCullough was freed last April, his conviction vacated and the charges against him dismissed after Schmack determined that phone records and FBI documents from 1957 and 1958 proved McCullough was in Rockford and could not have been in Sycamore on Dec. 3, 1957, at the time Ridulph was abducted from the corner of Archie Place and Center Cross Street near her home.

McCullough also is seeking a certificate of innocence from a judge. A hearing on that matter is set for April.

Glenna L. Smith, 81, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Friday, February 3, 2017, at Bethany Healthcare and Rehab Center in DeKalb.

She was born March 9, 1935, in Michigan, the daughter of Alfred and Anna (Wolczak) Knox, Glenna married Galen J. Smith in 1971 at First United Methodist Church in DeKalb.

Glenna was a waitress and hostess most of her life and later retired from Northern Illinois University in Food Service. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in DeKalb; she loved flowers, her dog, Riley, and scrapbooking.

She is survived by her husband, Galen; her daughters, Sheri (Steve) Norman of Aurora, Karen (Ron) Struewing of Virginia; her son, Robert J. Smith of DeKalb; eight grandchildren, Christine, Vanessa, Darren, Steve Jr., Samantha, Sarah, Galen, Timothy; six great-grandchildren; brother, Phillip (Dorothy) Knox of Burlington; sister, Irene (Ray) Cox of Hamilton, Montana; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Tammy Lee Smith-Baie in 1998; her sister, Pat; and her parents.

SYCAMORE – Those who neglect to pay parking meter fines in Sycamore now will be hearing from a debt collector after ignoring the city’s notices longer than 100 days.

The Sycamore City Council unanimously approved an agreement Monday with the debt collection services company Municipal Collections of America.

Council member Rick Kramer was absent.

City Manager Brian Gregory said that in the past six months, 50 percent of 2,997 issued citations have gone unpaid, representing $28,039 in fines. About 62 percent of those citations were parking meter fines.

“Our initial ticket is a dollar; there are times when I believe those that are receiving the ticket do not take it [seriously],” he said. “They think that the city won’t have any recourse to collect.”

Initial fines for improper use of the penny parking meters are $1, and a subsequent meter violation is $5. Late fines add $25, $50 and then $75 to the original fine after 21, 42 and 64 days have passed.

Gregory said that the 12-month agreement will be of no cost to the city because

license suspension program.

Alderman Becky Springer said she was concerned about license suspensions being too strict of an enforcement.

“Are we going to suspend someone’s license over 10 $1 parking tickets?”

Springer said.

Police Chief Glenn Theriault said that although the company would manage the process, he still would be in charge of determining when all other options have been exhausted. He said the option to suspend someone’s license is rarely used.

“Our hope is that we have no one that gets to anywhere near that level, but we currently have two people that would qualify for that,” Theriault said. “One has somewhere in the range of 32 tickets and continues to accrue them.”

With the city’s administrative adjudication process in place, violators have a process of 100 days in which they can appeal their citations and request a hearing. If the fines are not paid or appealed after 100 days, the collection company will step in.

“What we find is generally there are people that are compliant or that just want to completely ignore the situation,” Theriault said. “It’s over 100 days and multiple notices we’ve sent on a single violation.”

CHICAGO – An Australian lungfish that entranced visitors to Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium for more than 80 years has been euthanized because of old age, the popular tourist attraction announced Monday.

Granddad, who was 4 feet long and weighed 25 pounds, had stopped eating and started showing signs of organ failure. He was euthanized Sunday. A necropsy – or animal autopsy – found conditions consistent with old age, aquarium officials said.

“For a fish who spent much of his time imitating a fallen log, he sparked curiosity, excitement and wonder among guests of all ages who would hear his story,” said Bridget C. Coughlin, Shedd Aquarium’s president and chief executive officer.

Shedd estimates Granddad was more than 90 years old. The aquarium acquired him from the Sydney Aquarium in Australia during a 1933 collecting expedition, and Granddad was one

Red-light camera company to pay $20M to settle suit

CHICAGO – A red-light camera company whose former chief executive pleaded guilty to a federal bribery charge will pay $20 million to settle a lawsuit with Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Monday.

The deal ends a lawsuit the city filed against Phoenix-based Redflex Traffic Systems Inc. and its Australian parent company Redflex Holdings Ltd, accusing Redflex of fraud and making false statements when it contracted in 2003 to run Chicago’s red-light camera enforcement program.

The system, much-vilified by drivers, automatically ticketed motorists.

Chicago canceled Redflex’s contract in 2013 after Chicago Tribune reports about the scheme.

Former Redflex CEO Karen Finley and former Chicago transportation official John Bills were convicted in a $100

Bills was the former second-in-command at Chicago’s Department of Transportation. He was accused of accepting envelopes stuffed with cash, along with gifts – including condominiums in two states and a Mercedes – to help Redflex obtain contracts in a decadelong scheme. Prosecutors said the cash and gifts were worth a total of up to $2 million.

“I hope that this serves as a warning to other companies that do business or hope to business with the city that we will hold those who try to take advantage of taxpayers accountable,” Emanuel said in a statement.

The settlement money is to be paid installments over the next six years, city officials said. In January, the company made a deal with federal prosecutors ensuring that others at Redflex won’t be prosecuted if it continues to cooperate.

“Today marks a new beginning for Redflex,” Redflex Traffic Systems President and CEO Michael Finn said in a statement Monday, noting that the company has enhanced compliance management, training and oversight.

Meteor over Lake Michigan lights up sky in several states

GREEN BAY, Wis. – A meteor over Lake Michigan lit up the sky Monday morning across several states in the Midwest.

Dashcam video from police cruisers in Wisconsin and Illinois captured the fireball streaking through the dark sky about 1:30 a.m. In addition to Illinois and Wisconsin, the American Meteor Society lists sightings in Indiana, Michigan and other states.

Meteorologist Jeff Last of the National Weather Service’s office in Green Bay, Wisconsin, said the meteor was accompanied by a sonic boom that shook houses in the region.

Last said radar shows the meteor passing over Lake Michigan, but he said it’s not clear whether it landed in the water or whether it broke up in the sky.

Man dies after being injured at construction site

CHICAGO – Authorities said a man died after he was struck in the head by a falling object at a construction site on Chicago’s North Side.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that 59-year-old Roman Iatsyn of Chicago was working Saturday when he was

injured in the accident.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said Iatsyn was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy listed cause of death as blunt force trauma.

The death is under investigation.

Swedish Bakery shutting down after 88 years

CHICAGO – Swedish Bakery on Chicago’s North Side is closing after 88 years in business.

Dennis Stanton of the bakery in the city’s Andersonville neighborhood said the staff is getting older. He said an aging – and dying – customer base also contributed to the decision to close at the end of February. He also told the Chicago Tribune that the bakery was finding it difficult to attract millennials who are “looking for a food experience” to patronize a bakery.

Stanton said news that the bakery is closing has prompted customers to call to stock up on the bakery’s famous Andersonville Coffeecake. And even after it closes, he said the bakery will consider selling its recipes, although he’s not sure how many people will be interested in buying them.

Appeals court weighs Trump’s ban on travel

By ERIC TUCKER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The fierce battle over President Donald Trump’s travel and refugee ban edged up the judicial escalator Monday, headed for a possible final face-off at the Supreme Court. Travelers, temporarily unbound, tearfully reunited with loved ones at U.S. airports.

The Justice Department filed a new defense of Trump’s ban on travelers from seven predominantly Muslim nations as a federal appeals court weighs whether to restore the administration’s executive order. The lawyers said the travel ban was a “lawful exercise” of the president’s authority to protect national security and said a judge’s order that put the policy on hold should be overruled.

The filing with the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was the latest salvo in a high-stakes legal fight surrounding Trump’s order, which was halted Friday by a federal judge in Washington state.

The judges are to hear arguments Tuesday.

The appeals court earlier refused to immediately reinstate the ban, and lawyers for Washington and Minnesota – two states challenging it – argued anew on Monday that any resumption would “unleash chaos again,” separating families and stranding university students.

The Justice Department responded that the president has clear authority to “suspend the entry of any class of aliens” to the U.S. in the name of national security. It said the travel ban, which temporarily suspends the country’s refugee program and immigration from seven countries with terrorism concerns, was intended “to permit an orderly review and revision of screening procedures to ensure that adequate standards are in place

The challengers of the ban, the Justice Department wrote, were asking “courts to take the extraordinary step of second-guessing a formal national security judgment made by the president himself pursuant to broad grants of statutory authority.”

Whatever the appeals court decides, either side could ask the Supreme Court to intervene.

It could prove difficult, however, to find the necessary five votes at the high court to undo a lower court order; the Supreme Court has been at less than full strength since Justice Antonin Scalia’s death a year ago. The last immigration case that reached the justices ended in a 4-4 tie.

The president’s executive order has faced legal uncertainty ever since Friday’s ruling by U.S. District Judge James Robart, which challenged both Trump’s authority and his ability to fulfill a campaign promise.

The State Department quickly said people from the seven countries – Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen – could travel to the U.S. if they had valid visas.

The White House claims to be unimpressed by the protests. In fact, a lot of the demonstrators are simply paid to show up and shout, Trump press secretary Sean Spicer said. But that’s just a fantasy, foes say.

“The level of mobilization against Trump is almost like nothing I’ve ever seen before,” said Joe Dinkin, spokesman for the Working Families Party, which coordinates weekly anti-Trump events across the country. “Collaboration with Trump is a path that will bring well-deserved ire.”

WASHINGTON – Scrappy as ever, Donald Trump on Monday dismissed polls showing low approval ratings as “fake news.” But whatever his opinion, active opposition to his go-it-alone presidency appears to be widening.

From corporate boardrooms to the halls of Congress, Trump is facing an unprecedented effort to disrupt even the most basic of his presidential functions.

It’s an evolving, largely grass-roots effort that aims to follow Trump and his potential supporters everywhere they go – and there are early signs that it’s having an effect.

The Trump name alone is enough to spark outrage. There are plans for a mass “mooning” of Trump Tower in Chicago.

Boycotts are underway of companies that sell Ivanka Trump’s clothing line or advertise on NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice,” where Trump has remained an executive producer.

Congressional offices are being flooded with emails, social media messages and calls jamming phone lines.

Hundreds of protesters are flocking to town halls and local congressional offices, some in strongly Republican districts, to voice their opposition to Trump’s Cabinet picks, health care plans and refugee restrictions.

The goal, say organizers of some of the efforts, is nothing short of complete resistance. It’s a strategy Democrats say they learned from the success of the tea party movement, which stymied President Barack Obama’s agenda through protests, door-to-door political action campaigns and online activism.

“The lesson from the last eight years is, sadly, that implacable resistance works,” said Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va. “Because it’s all about your base, and I will simply point out that our base is bigger than theirs, and it’s riled up.”

Trump and some Republicans shrug it off as sore losers unwilling to accept the results of the election. The president’s core supporters, in states such as Iowa and Wisconsin, applaud him as a man of action, delivering on his campaign promises to move quickly and shake up Washington.

Although recent polls show his approval ratings in the 40s, a historic low for a new president, Trump rejects the surveys as false.

“Any negative polls are fake news, just like the CNN, ABC, NBC polls in the election. Sorry, people want border security and extreme vetting,” he tweeted on Monday. “I call my own shots, largely based on an accumulation of data, and everyone knows it.”

Trump’s base is likely to reward

an effect on his ability to promote his agenda across the globe. On Monday, the speaker of Britain’s House of Commons said he strongly opposes Trump addressing Parliament, making it unlikely he’ll be given the honor during a state visit later this year.

Technology executive Elon Musk spent hours on Twitter over the weekend defending his decision to serve on Trump’s business council. So far, one CEO – Uber’s Travis Kalanick – has quit the group after facing a weeklong rider boycott.

The ACLU saw donations pour in after it sued the government over the refugee ban.

And Republican lawmakers are bracing themselves for an onslaught of rowdy town hall meetings, after congressmen in California and Florida faced raucous crowds last weekend.

“The situation was rapidly escalating into a riot,” said California Rep. Tom McClintock, who had to be extracted by police from an event in downtown Roseville, the population center of his sprawling congressional district. “One thing came through loud and clear: They were not angry at President Trump for breaking any of his promises – they were angry at him for keeping them.”

By STEPHANIE MARKHAM smarkham@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Joel Filmore said he started the Lighthouse Professional Counseling Center with a focus on helping Northern Illinois University students achieve wholeness and wellness as well as providing additional mental health services in the DeKalb and Sycamore area.

Filmore is the director of clinical services at Lighthouse Professional Counseling Center, 2535 Bethany Road in Sycamore. He and counselor David Barreto opened the practice in July.

Filmore said he went on to teach at other universities after finishing his doctoral work at NIU in 2014, but he felt drawn back to the DeKalb area.

“Ultimately I decided to move back to DeKalb because it was the place that most felt like home, and that’s when I started having conversations with David about having a private practice,” he said.

Filmore said that while mental health issues on college campuses have been on the rise, there are often not enough services available to students, which is why it is important that his practice accepts NIU student insurance.

“Classes, relationships, parental stress and pressure, all of those things can add and make the college experience that much more difficult,” he said. “And so we want to make sure that you have a place that you can

“For the number of people, there just aren’t enough mental health services available to meet all the needs, and so being very intentional about that was really important to us,” he said.

Filmore said each counselor has a specific area of expertise, but they are all trained to deal with things like trauma, depression and anxiety. The practice offers individual, couple and family, and group counseling. He said he has worked a lot with couples, families and LGBT individuals.

Barreto said he is bilingual and hopes to reach out and provide services for the Latino community, and he also has experience working with people who are HIV-positive or have other illnesses.

Trump can help small business At a meeting with small-business leaders this week, President Donald Trump pledged to do “a big number” on the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act, which he blamed for cutting off the bank lending needed for growth. “It’s almost impossible now to start a small business, and it’s virtually impossible to expand your existing business,” he said.

Trump is wrong about small-business starts.

Since early 2010, new business creation has rebounded.

But he’s right, albeit with a whiff of exaggeration, that it’s harder to finance and expand a small business than it needs to be. Total bank lending to small businesses has declined by about 6 percent since Dodd-Frank was put in place.

Although weak consumer demand is a major culprit, misdirected regulation also has created formidable obstacles.

Half a decade into Dodd-Frank’s life, it’s clear the rules aimed at large, complex institutions have fallen hard on banks with less than $10 billion in assets – a group that accounts for about two-thirds of all small-business lending.

These banks must sort their assets into myriad risk categories, a task that has helped double the length of the quarterly reports they file with supervisors. Stringent one-size-fits-all guidelines limit their ability to make mortgage loans – a major source of financing for entrepreneurs.

Such requirements are entirely unnecessary for institutions that don’t get involved in derivatives, keep most of their loans on their own books and run simple businesses that examiners understand well. Worse, the added red tape complicates precisely the kind of know-your-customer lending at which they excel.

That’s why some banking experts – including Thomas Hoenig, vice chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. – have proposed freeing them of the most onerous requirements as long as they maintain adequate levels of loss-absorbing capital.

Financial regulators actually have taken a step in the right direction, issuing a rule that will streamline quarterly reporting requirements for the smallest banks (with assets of less than $1 billion).

Still, there’s plenty more the Trump administration and Congress can do, such as liberating well-capitalized community banks from risk-weighting requirements and certain mortgage-lending constraints.

Dodd-Frank was built primarily to address the excesses of sprawling, global institutions, not small-town banks that take risks on people they know. It’s a disconnect that should be recognized – and repaired.

Congress should update higher-ed law Enacted as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society in 1965, the Higher Education Act has defined the relationship between the federal government and the nation’s colleges and universities for over half a century.

Its last full-scale update, in the form of a reauthorization, came in 2008 and lapsed three years ago, although federal higher-ed programs have continued under repeated extensions since.

Reauthorization proved a futile and frustrating task, as deeply entrenched interest groups with a stake in every subsection of the statute besieged lawmakers.

Nevertheless, the new Congress and the incoming Trump administration should try again, lest widespread dissatisfaction with higher-ed – especially with the financial challenges of securing an undergraduate degree – deepen.

Donald Trump focused relatively little of his time and attention on the cost of college, and the burden of student debt,

during his campaign. What little he and the Republican Party had to say after his nomination suggested they want to revert to conditions that pertained before the Obama administration, when the government still allowed private companies to originate student loans whose interest rates still were set by Congress and whose repayment still ultimately was federally guaranteed.

The upside of this uninspiring agenda is Trump’s commitment to it is only slight, so there is plenty of room for Congress to take the lead.

If the Republicans who control that body are looking for fresh ideas, they need look no further than the proposal of Trump’s rival for the GOP nomination, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who floated a student loan reform plan during his unsuccessful campaign.

Bush would have given every student a lifetime $50,000 line of credit toward educational expenses, interest-free but

repayable through fixed payroll deductions over 25 years.

It’s progressive: high-earning borrowers potentially pay back more than they’ve borrowed (up to a maximum of $87,500), while low earners may pay back less.

Yet unlike plans for free tuition, this one acknowledges the fact college is an earnings-enhancing investment, and so it is appropriate to ask students to shoulder some of the cost.

There are potential drawbacks to the Bush plan, such as the fact it may not offer enough financing for those who want to pursue a graduate degree.

However, its basic principles are consistent with ideas that previously have enjoyed bipartisan support.

Perhaps most important, its relative simplicity poses a welcome contrast to the current confusing morass of federal loan programs, which Congress must address, one way or another, as part of a necessary update of higher-ed law.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

That didn’t sit too well with the voters back home, and he was voted out of office.

Almost immediately after the election, I heard Democratic lawmakers quietly say that Blagojevich had better take care of Pat. Eventually, Blagojevich hired him for a high-paying position in the Department of Revenue. And by all accounts, he did a fine job there.

And, of course, when Pat Quinn was governor, his administration became a safe haven for plenty of losers, particularly after the 2011 income tax hike.

We’ll never know for sure what was going through particular lawmakers’

minds in the waning minutes of their political careers. But we do know some of these folks that the voters took off the state payroll ended up drawing state paychecks not long after their time in the Legislature was through.

Just consider: • Former state Rep. Bob Flider became Quinn’s director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture. The job paid $133,273.

• Former state Rep. Careen Gordon was first nominated for the state parole board, but after state senators said they would not confirm her, the Quinn administration found a spot for her as a lawyer handling real estate licensing.

The job paid $84,000.

• The late state Rep. Mike Smith snagged a job with the Education Labor Relations Board that paid $93,926.

In fact, of the 12 lame-duck legislators who voted for the tax increase being pushed by Quinn in 2011, at least six were later hired by him.

So, when I hear Democrats clucking their tongues over Rauner hiring Munger, I just roll my eyes. This has been standard operating procedure

in Springfield for many years. It has happened under Republicans and Democrats alike.

That doesn’t make it right. It just makes it common.

Illinois governors like to follow the adage, “Take care of those who take care of you.”

And that’s why I find Rauner’s behavior disappointing. He presented himself to the voters as a businessman, not a politician. He pledged to change how the state operates and to run it as a business. Both are admirable goals.

But instead, we get the same old political shenanigans. State jobs shouldn’t serve as soft landing pads for defeated politicians.

After all, our money deserves to be handled more wisely.

Gov. Rauner, we expect more from you.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR DeKalb should not take over or expand Egyptian Theatre To the Editor: Barlow & Associates consultants presented a report at the City Council’s Jan. 23 Committee of the Whole meeting that gave recommendations for the Egyptian Theatre, which is owned by a dedicated nonprofit group, Preservation of the Egyptian Theatre Inc. The theater is worthy of support, but some of the report’s more startling recommendations were: A. To transform the Egyptian into a performing arts center that could easily cost $8 million for added space, Americans with Disabilities Act bathrooms and air conditioning, and B. DeKalb taxpayers become the Egyptian’s owners.

The report went further to state that we, DeKalb citizens, should bear all operating costs when the partial operating budget shown totaled more than $1 million a year. This was especially jarring since our city has about $25 million

in overdue road repairs that remain unfunded.

On the other hand, some suggestions in the consulting report might be manageable for us citizens.

Beyond expenditures mentioned in the report, a number of other related projects were listed but did not have price tags.

The report pointed out that the city’s open lot to the west of the Egyptian would be a good site for part of the expansion. The city could sell it to Preservation of the Egyptian Theatre for a nominal price. The report’s authors expected the city to widen and change the direction of city streets downtown to provide more parking, and to expand public transit between Northern Illinois University and the Egyptian.

Perhaps we could do some of these things in stages as the theater’s ownership company changes the Egyptian and its business model blossoms.

The city of DeKalb should not take ownership of the Egyptian Theatre or pay to transform it into a performing art center for two reasons.

1. The costs required to follow the report’s plan are very large and sometimes unknown.

2. We have much higher priorities for our limited funds to provide basic municipal services and infrastructure, which have been neglected.

The difference between beliefs, facts and lies

To the Editor: Words. Beliefs = something someone thinks is true.

Truth = correct.

Untrue = something that is incorrect.

Mislead = saying something to lead people to the wrong conclusion.

There is a God, and there is no God. Both are beliefs, but one is wrong. We need to die to find out the truth.

The world is flat, and the world is round. Both were beliefs, but only one is true now.

Trickle-down economics is great. True

for a small segment of the citizenry, but untrue for most.

Bengazi was a spontaneous attack over a movie. Bengazi was a planned terrorist attack. One was true, and one was a known lie.

Connie Schultz states right out that President Donald Trump lies about voter fraud, but if he really believes it, it definitely is not a lie. It may or may not be true, but to really settle the issue, there needs to be an independent investigation.

It should also be pointed out at the end of her columns that she is also married to Sherrod Brown, who is senior senator from Ohio. By calling Trump a liar, she is just misdirecting people’s thinking without facts.

That is the media’s failing in the people’s trust. The more one-sided the media is, the more the majority of citizens will not trust them, and when that’s gone, we are in deep doo-doo!

SPRINGFIELD – When I heard Friday that Gov. Bruce Rauner hired former Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger for a $135,000-a-year job, I just groaned.

It’s not that I have anything against Munger. She strikes me as a bright, talented individual who showed herself to be more than capable dealing with the state’s finances during the most challenging fiscal time in its history.

But let’s be blunt. She got her keister kicked in November by Democrat Susana Mendoza.

The voters weighed Munger’s two years in office and found her lacking.

Sometimes the voters can be foolish.

(After all, these are the same folks who elected Rod Blagojevich twice.)

Nonetheless, in a democracy, elections have consequences.

But in the 18 years I’ve covered Illinois politics, I’ve seen governors blunt those consequences time and time again with our money.

The characters change, but the game stays the same.

Timberwolves’ season over after struggle from outside

By JESSE SEVERSON jseverson@shawmedia.com SHABBONA – Midway through the season, the Indian Creek girls basketball team used some timely outside shooting at home to take down Earlville-Leland in overtime.

On Monday, the Raiders got their payback by ending the Timberwolves’ season.

The No. 8 seed Timberwolves took a late lead despite poor shooting, but eventually No. 9 Earlville-Leland went back ahead for good in a 35-32 victory in the first round of the Class 1A Shabbona Regional.

“The one thing I enjoyed about coaching them is they don’t quit,” Indian Creek coach Paul Muchmore said about his Timberwolves’ season coming to an end. “They never quit.

They don’t fold. We’re always hanging around.”

Facing a zone defense, the Timberwolves (6-22 overall) shot 5 for 27 (18.5 percent) from the 3-point line on

the night – the last miss coming on a desperation attempt by senior Olivia Harvell that hit off the top of the backboard at the buzzer “We played so poorly tonight, we shot terrible against a zone, so it’s not like we were getting pressured into shooting bad shots,” Muchmore said. “We just struggled, but there we are, taking the lead at the end of the game.”

Harvell, who had a clutch 3-pointer against the Raiders the first time the two teams played to help the Timberwolves to a 44-41 victory in overtime on Jan. 6, and junior Olivia Turner each finished with a team-high eight points on Tuesday.

The Timberwolves trailed for nearly three-and-a-half quarters and were behind 26-21 going into the fourth before going on a 7-0 run to take the lead – including a 3-pointer by Turner and a jumper by Harvell to tie the game followed by a layup from junior Morgan Johnson to put Indian Creek up, 28-26, with 4:22 left in the game.

However, the Timberwolves’ two best post players fouled out on backto-back plays after taking the lead.

After Sarah Diehl’s fifth foul sent Earlville-Leland (14-10) to the line for a one-and-one with 4:03 remaining, the Raiders missed the first attempt and Johnson was called for her fifth foul on the ensuing scuffle for the rebound.

“I thought it was hard to lose them because they put themselves in position for a couple of those fouls to be cheap fouls,” Muchmore said. “You get two cheap fouls and I think a couple of them are on the team, when the team didn’t rotate. We have to rebound and they get a foul.”

The Raiders got most of their points inside, with senior post Abigail Eckles scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds and junior post Emily Cook added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

“I think it’s a pretty even match,” Muchmore said of the two close games between the Raiders. “I think we’re about the same athletically, they’re

probably a little bit bigger than us and a bit more experienced than us.”

By the numbers: Diehl and Johnson both got into early foul trouble and Diehl didn’t play in the second quarter. Johnson finished with six points and seven rebounds and Diehl had one point and six rebounds.

Beyond the stats: The Timberwolves made things interesting in the final minute because of sophomore Jade Milostan, who made a basket to cut the deficit to two points on two separate occasions – including with 6.5 left.

They said it: “I told the girls this was one of the fastest seasons I can remember,” Muchmore said. “We were 6-22 – usually it’s not that way. Just because of their make-up and how they play so hard and never give up and they’re fun to have in practice and they try to execute what we’re asking. It just flew by, I couldn’t believe how fast it went by. It’s a credit to them and the way they work and how nice of kids they are.”

Royals’ defense heats up in win over Ramblers

By EDDIE CARIFIO ecarifio@shawmedia.com AURORA – It took about a quarter for the defense called mayhem by Hinckley-Big Rock girls basketball coach Doug Brewington to live up to its name.

But when it did, the Royals pulled away for a 38-25 win against Mooseheart on Monday in a first-round game of the Class 1A Aurora Christian Regional.

“Normally the pressing team is a little more the aggressor, but we came out a little, not necessarily timid, but feeling them out,” Brewington said.

“We tell the girls this press isn’t about getting steals every single possession, but making teams work to get into their offense. The turnovers will come. And that’s what happened.”

The seventh-seeded Royals (10-18) pressed from the start but forced one turnover and led, 10-7, after the first quarter. But they forced five turnovers in the second quarter, scored seven points off them, and built a 24-11 lead at halftime. They never led by less than 11 for the rest of the game.

“We weren’t really in the zone yet,” said Emily Southern, who led the Royals with 13 points and four steal, plus grabbed eight rebounds. “Once we heated up, we picked it up and started forcing the turnovers.”

Southern said the team hadn’t been using the defense much lately and acted as a good practice for Wednesday, when the Royals will face Aurora Christian in the semifinals.

“This was one of the first times we’ve run that press in a while,” Southern

said. “It was nice to come out and get a feel for it for the game Wednesday.”

The Royals stymied the No. 9 Red Ramblers (4-17) all night. Only Nowai Kpartipa was able to get anything going on offense, grabbing 18 points and 21 rebounds. The rest of the Mooseheart roster combined for seven points and 20 rebounds.

On offense, the Royals shot 27 percent from the floor, with Anne Kossman scoring 12 and Elena Halverson adding seven.

“You get one girl hot all of a sudden you got three or four girls hot,” Brewington said. “Tonight we didn’t have anybody that caught fire. We shot adequately well, but we didn’t really catch fire.”

Ex-players ‘emotionally invested’ in Huskies again DeKALB – Legendary former Huskies are taking notice of the Northern Illinois women’s basketball team.

The Huskies stayed in first place in the Mid-American Conference with a 67-62 win over Western Michigan in front of nearly 40 former players as part of a celebration on Saturday. Interest in the program has been renewed, they said, as the high-scoring Huskies are averaging 88 points per game and are off to their best start in a decade.

“You see how many points they score? I don’t care what level basketball it is, you have to respect that,” said E.C. Hill, the last Huskie to be named an All-American, earning the honor in 1993-94. “They’re highly skilled. I think maybe we made them a little nervous, but they got the W. When you’re scoring 100 points and people are scoring 30 points, they make you watch them.

“No disrespect to the other coaches, but everybody likes offense. Everybody likes seeing you put the ball in the basket. That’s part of it. When they score 100 points and they’re first in the MAC, you got to go. You want them to knock our banners down.”

It has been more than two decades since the Huskies women’s basketball program made the NCAA Tournament.

Hill, who played in the WNBA after her time at NIU and is currently a high school coach in Florida, was named to the Northern Illinois University Hall of Fame in 2004 and played on three of those NCAA Tournament teams.

“I am emotionally invested, I’m not kidding,” said Sullivan, who played from 1991-95 and brought a plastic baggie full of photographs with her on Saturday. “They’re awesome. Their up-tempo game reminds me of our years when I was there. It reminds me of how we would play and it’s so exciting and scoring 90-100 points, I love it. I love watching them play.”

In just her second year as the head coach, Lisa Carlsen not only has secured the Huskies’ first winning season since 2006-07, but has the players and fans – and alums – eyeing a potential trip to the NCAA Tournament. If there’s anybody that understands the excitement of playing a high-scoring style of basketball and the difficulty of turning around a program, it’s Carol Owens.

Owens, an NIU Hall of Famer who was a star player for the NCAA Tournament-bound 1989-90 team that scored 94.5 points per game, took over as head coach for the Huskies in 2005-06 – a year after they went 7-21.

In just her second season, the Huskies went 19-12, and it’s the last time

they’ve had a winning record.

“It is extremely hard and I’m sure she’s coached a lot of different teams and knew what style fit this team,” said Owens, who went 66-81 in five seasons at NIU and is now an assistant coach at Notre Dame. “I just like that (this season’s team) can score. It reminds me of when we played. We averaged 90-some points per game. They do it here.

“I think they play so well together and so unselfishly and that kind of reminds me of the teams that we had. Nobody cared who the leading scorer was this game or that game, they shared the ball and wanted to win.”

Carlsen said after the win over Western Michigan that she wasn’t thinking about all the impressive alums watching her Huskies while the game was going on, but joked that “you definitely don’t want to go out on the floor and walk off and fake like you’re happy.”

There were no fake smiles after the game on Saturday. No, the excitement surrounding the Huskies’ program is very real.

“I feel like this year I want to be here for these games,” Sullivan said. “I want to be here to cheer them on. I feel like they really have a shot to go to the NCAA tournament and I want to be a part of it. I miss being a part of women’s basketball at Northern.

“It feels good to be home.”

through the air, throwing just eight passes for an average of 14.4 yards per pass.

But from halftime until Kyle Shanahan’s second-and-11 call at the New England 28 after the Jones catch, Atlanta ran the ball 10 times for only 17 yards with one rush for no gain and four for losses, including the first down Freeman run that lost a yard.

There were still four minutes to play and the Falcons have thrown the ball in that situation all year long to get to the Super Bowl.

Not to mention Atlanta had just seen its 25-point lead whittled to eight in the last 13:30.

The Falcons were playing for the touchdown there, not a field goal, and they should have been.

“Well, we thought we’d have a good look based on the personnel that was in the game for them,” Falcons coach Dan Quinn said. “We trust our guys so we thought that was an opportunity to let it rip. When it doesn’t go that way, it’s easy to question it.”

Matt Ryan couldn’t have agreed more, based on who the Falcons are, not in defense of Kyle Shanahan.

“Too aggressive? No. I thought Kyle (Shanahan) did a god job,” he said. “I thought we played the way that we play. We always play aggressive and play to win. We had opportunities and we made some mistakes on the field that at the end of the day ended up costing us.”

Even Patriots defensive coordina-

tor Matt Patricia thought it was the right call.

“This is a great offense now, they have a lot of weapons and they can get the ball to a lot of different people,” he said. “They had a lot of success early doing it and we’re kind of thinking along those lines thinking that’s what they were going to do.”

Defensive end Chris Long took real exception to the idea Atlanta gave the game away in any way.

“They’re a great football team.

Coach Quinn is a hell of a football coach and that team, they attacked us,” he said. “In the end we just had too much belief. I don’t think it was like that, I think it was more we took it.”

Which brings us back to the Patriots’ defense. Long thinks the biggest play of the game was Dont’a Hightower’s strip-sack just three plays after the Patriots’ second field goal made it 28-12 and giving them a chance to come back and make it a one-score game.

“It wasn’t always sacks, it was hits, it was Trey (Flowers) with 2½ sacks,” Long said. “Defensively we stayed after everybody. Then Tom just took over.”

Brady felt James White could have been the game’s MVP, but the young running back said they knew at halftime it was up to the defense.

“If the defense could get stops, we could put up points and keep narrowing their lead and we just found a

way to get a victory,” he said.

After allowing the Falcons 189 yards and 21 points, including the pick-six off Brady in the first half, New England held the NFL’s No. 1 offense to just seven points and 155 yards on 27 plays in the second half.

The Patriots also had their lone takeaway and three of their five sacks in the second half, and they held Atlanta to 0-for-5 on third down.

Hightower said of his group, “I’m proud of all 11, 13, however many people that we have out there on this defense,” he said. “Nobody believed that we could come out here and do this.”

Super Bowl LI wasn’t about just one quarterback, play-calling or anybody choking. It was just a great game that perhaps Edelman, author of one of the greatest catches in Super Bowl history to propel New England’s game-tying drive, summed up best.

“Unbelievable. It’s the microcosm of our life, our season,” he said.

“Mental toughness, believe, do your job, work hard and we’d be champions in the champions’ game. We got to tip our hats, it’s a good football team over there. I respect the hell out of them, great competitors.

“We just came out on top.”

HOUSTON – I was in NRG Stadium Sunday night for Super Bowl LI, in the press box, in the interview rooms with the players and coaches afterward and yet like most of America, I still woke up this morning feeling like Atlanta must have won, didn’t they?

Patriot defensive end Trey Flowers said it best after the game.

“It’s crazy. I still can’t believe it,” he said. “It’s going to be amazing waking up tomorrow because this is like a dream. It feels like a dream.”

Even Tom Brady acknowledged, “Two years ago it came down to Malcolm (Butler) making the play and this year down 25 points, I mean it’s hard to imagine us winning.”

Offensive tackle Nate Solder explained the comeback a little differently and I believe with tongue in cheek when he said, “He (Bill Belichick) cast a wizard’s spell over us that changed everything.

“He said that we have to keep doing what we’re doing, play like we know how to play and not think about what happened. They have to score a lot more points to keep us down.”

And therein lies the storyline that few have figured out even on the morning after the greatest comeback in NFL postseason history.

The Patriots’ amazing win was about more than the brilliance of Tom Brady, James White, Julian Edelman and company, and it had little to do with the performance of the young Falcons, who were brilliant for three quarters and good enough to win against any other opponent.

And in spite of all the geniuses on Twitter and online that have never called a play in their lives either for real, or even before it was run while driving from the backseat, Atlanta’s play-calling had little to do with the outcome, either.

Let’s look at Atlanta’s decisions that led to the sack after Julio Jones’ unbelievable catch at the New England 27 and then the holding call that eliminated any chance at a field goal to make it a two-score game.

And let’s eliminate some alternative facts, starting with the Falcons were running the ball well.

The Orange County district attorney’s to 2-year, $16M deal KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Royals agreed with right-hander Jason Hammel on a two-year, $16 million contract, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity Monday because the deal is pending the completion of a physical.

The 34-year-old Hammel is expected to take Yordano Ventura’s place in the starting rotation. The 25-year-old flamethrower was killed last month in a car accident in his native Dominican Republic.

Hammel was 15-10 with a 3.83 ERA for the Cubs last season and has proven to be a workhorse with at least 30 appearances in each of the past three seasons.

He is also intimately familiar with the Royals, pitching against the club with Tampa Bay, Colorado, Baltimore and Oakland before joining the Cubs. It was with the Athletics in 2014 that Hammel appeared in relief against Kansas City in their dramatic wild-card game won by the Royals in 12 innings.

Hammel has a 4.42 ERA over parts of 11 seasons, though his best years have been his most recent. He 10-7 with a 3.74 ERA for the Cubs in 2015 before helping them to the World Series championship last season.

Rodman gets probation in freeway crash

SANTA ANA, Calif. – Former NBA star Dennis Rodman has been sentenced to three years informal probation and 30 hours of community service for a crash

office says Rodman pleaded guilty Monday to misdemeanor counts of driving across a dividing section, giving false information to a police officer and driving without a valid license. He also must pay restitution.

Prosecutors say Rodman was traveling north in a southbound carpool lane on July 20 on Interstate 5 in Santa Ana, forcing a sedan to swerve into a dividing wall to avoid a collision.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The San Francisco 49ers officially hired Atlanta offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan as their new head coach on Monday, more than a month after firing Chip Kelly after just one season.

The 49ers settled on Shanahan a couple of weeks ago, but had to wait until after the Falcons played in the Super Bowl to sign him to a contract. Shanahan will be formally introduced at a news conference later this week.

Shanahan is the son of two-time Super Bowl-winning head coach Mike Shanahan, who also won a title as offensive coordinator in San Francisco in 1994. The younger Shanahan served as a ball boy then but now will be tasked along with new general manager John Lynch with rebuilding a team that just matched the worst record in franchise history with a 2-14 mark, leading to the dismissal of Kelly and general manager Trent Baalke.

to do. Like I said before, I don’t move guys. That’s not me. So whatever they decide to do as an organization, us an organization, we’re all living with that and we’re all riding with that. We all still have to go out there and try to win no matter the situation we’re put in or the people they put here.”

The Bulls entered this week sitting in the No. 7 spot of the East playoff picture, and while some teams like the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards have been heating up higher in the standings, one through eight – including the Cleveland Cavaliers – each roster has flaws.

The Bulls are no strangers to trade talk over the last month, starting with veteran Rajon Rondo openly insist-

ing that he would like to be elsewhere since losing his starting role at the end of December.

Add in rumors surrounding Taj Gibson and Nikola Mirotic, and the fact that even Butler might not be safe come the Feb. 23 trade deadline, and all of a sudden the next few weeks could get very interesting.

“I’m sure all 30 teams’ phones are busy; it’s that time of year where everybody’s doing due diligence and doing their job and making calls,” coach Fred Hoiberg said, when asked whether he’s been updated by GarPax on what the Bulls have been up to on the trade front. “When it gets this close to the deadline, things pick up with all 30 teams. We’ll see what happens around

the league.

“It’s a time where a lot of things are floating around, and our job is to keep our team focused and get them ready to play games, and hopefully continue to keep our guys competing and give ourselves a chance to win.”

The organization did visit the idea of moving Butler last June, leading up to Draft night, and the Sun-Times reported last month that the Bulls had taken calls on moving Butler in December, but definitely wasn’t making them.

No wonder Butler doesn’t even deem himself untouchable.

Butler was asked whether management had informed him that he’s off the market, and responded, “Nope. I don’t care. I just want to hoop.”

Asked whether he was surprised that they haven’t told him of his current standing, he said, “Nope. Nothing surprises me nowadays. You know that. I’m not surprised by anything.

Anything is possible. It’s a business at the end of the day. I love it here. They know that. The city knows that. [The media] may not know that so I’ll tell you I love it here.”

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Jimmy Butler isn’t looking to add general manager to his job description anytime soon.

So on Monday, when discussing the idea of a wide-open Eastern Conference basically sitting there for the taking, the three-time All-Star wasn’t about to get involved in whether his front office should add to the roster in hopes of going after something bigger, or simply stand pat and trust that the current product would get better as is.

“Like I always say, that’s not my job, man,’’ Butler said. “That’s up to them.”

When it was pointed out that the decisions general manager Gar Forman and VP of basketball operations John Paxson make will directly affect Butler and the rest of his teammates, he did acknowledge it, but also excused himself from that front office table.

Third, fourth lines key to winning another Cup

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com In the giddy moments after Bryan Bickell’s game-tying goal with 1:16 left of Game 6 of the 2013 Stanley Cup Final in Boston, Joel Quenneville didn’t keep his top line on the ice. He didn’t send in his second line, either.

Or his third.

No, in a tied game with the Stanley Cup on the line, Quenneville turned to his fourth line. And all Dave Bolland, Michael Frolik and Marcus Kruger did was score the go-ahead goal 17 seconds later. Then, with a lead with a championship less than a minute away, Quenneville kept his fourth line on the ice to salt away the victory.

Two years later, in Game 6 of the Final against Tampa Bay, with the Hawks protecting a 2-0 lead in the dying minutes, Quenneville didn’t send his superstars over the boards for the coronation. He sent in his fourth line – Andrew Desjardins, Marcus Kruger and Andrew Shaw – for the final minute of play, to make sure that lead held.

Despite all of the Blackhawks’ high-end forwards, what has separated them from the pack in their championship years has been their bottom six.

In 2010, the Hawks boasted a third line of Andrew Ladd, Bolland and Kris Versteeg.

In 2013, they had Brandon Saad, Andrew Shaw and Viktor Stalberg on the third line, and that unmatched fourth line of Kruger, Bolland and Frolik.

And in 2015, their third line was a powerhouse featuring Patrick Sharp, Antoine Vermette and Teuvo Teravainen, complemented by the revelation of a fourth line in Desjardins, Kruger and Shaw.

Every team that makes it far into the playoffs has some skill and some goaltending. It was the Hawks’ depth that set them apart. For most teams, a third line is the checking line and the fourth line plays a handful of minutes. For the Hawks’ Cup teams, the third line was another scoring line, and the fourth line was the shutdown unit.

That depth simply wasn’t there

last season, or in 2011, 2012 or 2014.

And while much of the focus has been on the Hawks’ lack of a top-line left wing, five of their top six are pretty well set. The key to another Cup run might be solidifying the bottom six, which has been changing on an almost nightly basis throughout the season.

“That’s what you need if you want to go deep,” Kruger said. “You need everybody – every line needs to play good for the team, and play a lot of minutes. All good teams have four good lines and three ‘D’ pairs, so that’s something we want to get.”

The Hawks have plenty of bottomsix-type players, with reliable guys such as Dennis Rasmussen, Richard Panik, Desjardins, and of course, the ultimate depth weapon, Kruger.

And rookies such as center Tanner Kero and winger Ryan Hartman have proved to be the kind of players who can be leaned on for important minutes in close games.

“That’s their goal,” Kero said.

“They’re trying to find the right look, because they want contributions from those bottom two lines. We want to be rock-solid defensively, but we want to contribute as much as we can. We’ve got plenty of guys in the bottom six that can do that. It’s just a matter of getting that confidence, and putting it all together.”

For a while, the third line was Rasmussen, Kruger and Panik. Then it was Hartman, Kero and Panik. Both clicked, but neither lasted. Dear Reader: The same virus that causes chickenpox is responsible for shingles, a painful rash that can cause long-term problems. It’s possible to get shingles at any age, but it’s most common in adults 60 and older.

Here’s what happens. Once the fever, rash and body aches of a bout of chickenpox have ended, the virus that caused the illness, called varicella-zoster, stays in the body. It lies dormant near bundles of nerve along the spine, known as the dorsal root ganglia. These are the nerves that pass sensory information – a touch, a tickle, the pain of a bee sting – from your skin to your brain.

Years after the initial infection, for reasons that still aren’t entirely clear, the virus can become active again. As it begins to reproduce, the body reacts. Some people get flulike symptoms such as headache, sensitivity to light and a general feeling of illness.

Others notice their skin is becoming tingly, itchy or painfully sensitive.

When the shingles rash appears, it’s generally along only one side of the face or torso.

It can look like a stripe, as it traces the path of the affected nerves. Tiny blisters form and re-form on the skin and last for two to four weeks.

During this period, the person with shingles is contagious. He or she can pass along a case of chickenpox – but not shingles – to anyone without immunity. The virus can be spread by direct contact with fluid from the rash. That’s why anyone with shingles should steer clear of pregnant women, infants, unimmunized children and individuals with suppressed immune systems.

ASK THE DOCTORS Elizabeth Ko and Eve Glazier If shingles sounds like a difficult and unpleasant illness, you’re right. During a case of shingles, even the touch of fabric on the affected skin can cause pain. The most common side effect is a condition known as postherpetic neuralgia, in which the severe pain of shingles persists for months or even years.

The good news (we imagine you’re ready for some about now) is there is a shingles vaccine. It’s made of live varicella-zoster virus that has been weakened greatly. It’s enough to stimulate an immune response in your body, but not enough to cause problems in anyone with a healthy immune system.

We routinely recommend to our patients who are 60 or older, and whose immune systems are in good order, they get a shingles vaccine. Protection lasts about five years.

Some drugs, such as those for rheumatoid arthritis, as well as some cancer drugs, suppress the immune system. In these cases, the shingles vaccine should be avoided. There are other contraindications as well, so talk it over with your primary care physician to make sure a shingles vaccine is the right decision for you.

For those who do get the vaccine, it’s important to note it doesn’t guarantee you will never get shingles. What it does is measurably lower your risk. And if you still do get shingles, the vaccine also reduces the likelihood of developing postherpetic neuralgia.

husband is a very aggressive driver.

He tailgates, cuts people off, narrates “play by play” during driving and stresses me out. He was involved in two accidents I am convinced were his fault, although one was blamed on the other driver. Fortunately, nobody was hurt.

Because of this I prefer to drive. The other day, he actually reached across and honked my horn while I was driving because somebody delayed a few seconds at the stoplight. We weren’t in a hurry, and there was no need to honk. Our children were in the car. When I complained, he told me to “just get over it.” He gets so grouchy if I say anything about his driving.

We live in a relatively small town, and our vehicles are very identifiable. All of the crazy road rage incidents I hear about certainly don’t help.

Any suggestions? Jean Cocteau, a French novelist, playwright, artist and filmmaker who died in 1963, said, “Mirrors would do well to reflect a little more before sending back images.”

That is subtly clever. At the bridge table, hands with mirror distribution have the same number of cards in each of the four suits. For declarer, they are usually bad news because there is no way to take a discard or score a ruff until the mirror is broken.

In today’s deal, South had to overcome not only mirror distribution but also a bad trump break. How did he make four spades after West led the heart king?

West almost led his singleton, but rightly decided that since he probably had a natural trump trick, he did not need to work for a ruff.

When the dummy came down, declarer noticed that the mirror distribution seemed to leave him with four unavoidable losers: one heart, one diamond and two clubs. Then matters got worse. After winning the first trick with dummy’s heart ace, South led the spade jack (tempting East to cover if he had all three missing trumps) and was unpleasantly surprised to see East throw a club (playing black on black).

Now declarer had only one chance: To find West with 3-7-2-1 distribution. South drew two rounds of trumps, took his minor-suit winners, then led the heart jack. West won, cashed the spade queen and, perforce, played a heart. Declarer discarded a diamond from dummy and a club from hand. Then, on the next heart, he ruffed on the board and pitched his last club. He crossruffed the last three tricks and lost only two hearts and one spade. Well envisioned.
