Super Bowl goes political in a big way

NEW YORK – Messages about America, inclusiveness – and, yes, even “four years of awful hair” – kept bubbling up in Super Bowl 51 ads from Airbnb, the NFL and a line of personal care products. But there was still plenty of escapism and light humor for those who weren’t into the politics.

As the New England Patriots edged out the Atlantic Falcons on the field in Houston, Airbnb touted inclusiveness with an ad showing faces of different ethnicities and the copy: “We all belong. The world is more beautiful the more you accept.” Coca-Cola aired a previously run ad in the pregame in which people sing “America the Beautiful” in different languages. Even a hair care brand dipped into politics: The “It’s a 10” hair brand indirectly referenced Donald Trump famously unruly do in its Super Bowl spot.

It’s tough to be a Super Bowl advertiser in during any year. But this year, a divisive political climate has roiled the nation since President Donald Trump took office in January, making it even tougher for advertisers.

Paying $5 million for 30 seconds to capture more than 110 million expected viewers, advertisers had to walk the line with ads that appealed to everyone and didn’t offend. Some were more successful than others.

“Anxiety and politics just loom over this game, so anybody who gives us the blessed relief of entertaining with a real Super Bowl commercial wins,” said Mark DiMassimo, CEO of the ad agency DiMassimo Goldstein.

Walking the political line

Advertisers were treading carefully when it

came to political themes.

“When it comes to politics, most brands prefer to stand on the sidelines, for good reason,” said Kelly O’Keefe, a marketing professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. “Brands used to worry about whether their ad could be interpreted as right or wrong. Now they have to worry about whether it will be interpreted as right or left.”

An NFL ad conveyed what all advertisers hope the Super Bowl becomes: a place where Americans can come together.

“Inside these lines, we may have our differences, but recognize there’s more that unites us,” Forest Whitaker intoned in a voiceover as workers prepped a football field and gridiron scenes played.

Airbnb’s ad was one of the more overtly political, showing a variety of different faces with the tagline “We accept.”

Surprises

Snickers got tons of press by airing a live ad In the third quarter. On a Wild West set, Adam Driver seems to not know the ad is live. The set falls apart (on purpose). “You ruin live Super Bowl commercials when you’re hungry,” the ad’s tagline reads.

Light humor and celebrities

Ads with light humor and stuffed with celebrities were popular.

Honda’s ad made a splash by animating the yearbook photos of nine celebrities ranging from Tina Fey to Viola Davis.

They make fun of their photos – Jimmy Kimmel is dressed in a blue tux and holding a clarinet, for example – and talk about “The Power of Dreams,” Honda’s ad slogan.

A PHANTOM OF THE OPERA Paranormal investigators host event at Sandwich Opera House

SANDWICH – Chris Roe believes in the paranormal. She has heard tales of real-life experiences and has witnessed firsthand what she describes as “things not quite what they appear to be.”

Roe is the executive director at the Sandwich Opera House, 140 E. Railroad St. in Sandwich. After having one or two odd experiences at work, she decided she would try to determine what was happening.

But instead of calling the Ghostbusters, she invited members of the Midwest Ghost Society to the opera house to conduct a private investigation.

“Once, as cleanup for an event was ending, I was told that the lights in the basement were on,” Roe said. “I knew nobody had been down there because the door was locked. When I went downstairs, the lights were on. I don’t know how that happened.

“Also – this was years ago – but the opera house had a problem with flickering lights. As the maintenance man was fixing the problem, he unplugged the lights. They were still flickering,” she said.

Others have reported of unnatural phenomena occurring in the building, including random drops in temperature and people saying they can feel an aura.

Michelle Lemire, founder of the MGS, said that during the private investigation, audio recorders captured voices, including a young child’s voice, that could not be explained.

At least one funeral service was held in the opera house, that of Sandwich Mayor Julius M. Hummel in 1930.

Then-mayor Hummel had commissioned the building of the Sandwich City Hall and Opera House, which was completed in 1878.

When first built, the building housed all the functions of city government, including city offices, the police department, a jail and the fire department.

The second floor was a community center, where shows by traveling troupes, lectures, recitals, high school graduations, political rallies, temperance meetings and church gatherings were held.

Since the initial investigation in January 2016, the MGS has held four guided paranormal investigations open to the public at the opera house.

“We hosted this event and other public investigations to introduce people to what we do,” Lemire said. “We want people to get involved, learn about our equipment and have a good experience.”

Lemire started MGS, which is based in Plano, in 2010. Since its founding, the MGS has traveled across the country to investigate public locations, businesses and private residences. For some of the locations that are farther away, the group spends the night or even a few days in the building while they investigate.

Ray Buchanan Jr. of Newark, one of the MGS’ original members, described the investigations as fun, social group outings.

“I love being in a goal-oriented team environment,” Buchanan said. “Many of us have a love of history and historical places. There are a few locations that we visit regularly. The events are fun, but we use scientific methods in our in-

Some examples of phenomena the MGS has reported and can’t explain include seeing spheres of light in dark rooms, having chairs pushed over and hearing mysterious noises such as whispers, screams and whistling.

Tammy Hawke of Hinckley, who has been with the MGS for more than five years, said she had her first paranormal experience after having a nightmare as a child.

“I remember waking up from a horrible nightmare, and there was an old lady sitting at the foot of my bed,” Hawke said. “She told me, ‘It’s OK, honey, go back to sleep.’ That’s when I realized that ghosts were real. I work for Fermilab. I believe very strongly in using science to debunk what we see. However, some things can’t be explained by science.”

To try to debunk phenomena, the group uses electromagnetic field sensors, REM-pods with temperature detection, video cameras with night vision capabilities and audio recorders.

It also uses a converted AM/FM radio to generate white noise, hoping to capture electronic voice phenomenon, or EVPs. Setting up and taking down the equipment and wires is the most time-consuming task of investigations.

Reviewing the collected video, audio and data can take the MGS two weeks or longer.

SYCAMORE – A collection agency could soon be contacting drivers who skip out on paying their parking fines.

According to city records, that’s about half the people who receive tickets for illegal parking.

The Sycamore City Council is set to vote Monday on a yearlong agreement with Municipal Collections of America, a collection services company that police would use to collect unpaid fine debts.

The council will meet at 7 p.m.

Monday in the council chambers of the Sycamore Center, 308 W. State St. City Manager Brian Gregory said ordinance changes last spring allowed for an administrative adjudication system, through which people who received parking tickets had the chance to appeal them and have a hearing before a judge.

These changes have led to increased availability of downtown parking at key times, but consistent enforcement still is needed, according to the resolution for the agreement.

In the first six months since the ordinance was passed, half of the 2,997 tickets issued have been paid, with $28,039 left in unpaid citations, according to the resolution. About 62 percent of the citations were parking meter fines.

Initial fines for improper use of the penny parking meters are $1, and a subsequent meter violation is $5.

General parking violations are $25, and disabled parking violations are $250.

Late payment penalties are added after 21, 42 and 64 days have passed.

Late fines add $25, $50 and then $75 to the original fine.

“[Parking meter fines are] not meant to be overly punitive,” Gregory said. “Some people assume there won’t be a follow-through because the fines are small.”

He said the agreement would be of no cost to the city because the company passes on a collection fee to the debtors.

State law entitles a municipality to recover the full amount of the fine through the agency while assessing up to a 35 percent fee on the debtor, which goes to the collection service, according to the resolution.

Council members reviewed a proposal in January from the Sycamore Police Department suggesting the city hire a company to streamline the collection process. Members agreed to pursue the plan and requested qualifications from potential agencies.

Gregory said two companies were considered, but Municipal Collections of America uses software that will better integrate information into the city’s adjudication system.

“There’s no manual entry, so it’s a more efficient use of staff time,” he said.

If the agreement is approved, the company would contact debtors after a 100-day collection process is exhausted.

LYNDA L. ATHERTON

Born: January 14, 1947 Died: February 3, 2017

Lynda (Miller) Atherton passed away peacefully on February 3, 2017.

Lynda was born on January 14, 1947, to Doris Schuster Miller and James F. Miller in Inglewood, California. She raised two beautiful daughters and her grandsons were her absolute joy. As her family and many friends know, she was compassionate, intelligent, loyal, funny and stubborn. Her primary legacy, other than her family, is the passion and determination she had while advocating for youth with disabilities and their parents. We will all miss her terribly!

Lynda deeply loved her grandsons. She was proud that James had begun college this year at Western Illinois University; she enjoyed special time with Joseph, cooking and baking new edible creations and looked forward to seeing him grow up.

Professionally, Lynda was first and foremost a teacher. She began her career at Northbrook Elementary in Mendota, IL and ended her career as a special education teacher at Jonas E. Salk Elementary School in Bolingbrook, IL. Her creativity in assisting students learn, knew no bounds. Lynda held a Master’s Degree in Special Education and in between her teaching employment; she worked in various positions for many years with Project CHOICES, an agency focused on working with schools to merge their special education and general education systems into one inclusive educational system. She served as the Parent Facilitator, for People for Inclusive Commu-

nities, a state-wide advocacy organization for persons with disabilities. She was an instructor for Northern Illinois University and Kishwaukee Community College for individual courses. She was a member and/or board member for local, state and international agencies designed to assist people with disabilities.

She is survived by her daughters, Wendy Corralejo and Amy Atherton; her favorite sonin-law, Roman Corralejo; grandsons, James and Joseph Corralejo; sister, Bonnie Miller; and Lynda’s foster son, Hilary Huffman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Marcia Miller; and two infant sisters.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m.

Tuesday, February 7, at Christ the Teacher University Parish, 512 Normal Road, DeKalb, with Fr. Matthew McMorrow celebrating.

Cremation will follow at Anderson Funeral Home Crematory with Interment at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Aurora at a later date.

Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Monday, February 6, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb.

Edward J. O’Bryan, age 77, of Sycamore died February 1, 2017. He was born in Prophetstown, Illinois, to Dorothy and Edward P. O’Bryan. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked for UPS for 35 years.

Kenneth M. Suddeth, 70, of Genoa died Thursday, February 2, 2017 at his home.

He was born May 2, 1946 in DeKalb to Marvin and Marjorie (Simpson) Suddeth. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, serving in the Vietnam War where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart.

Ken was a truck driver for many years. He enjoyed calf roping, field trials, traveling the countryside and meeting people.

Survivors include one son, Andrew Zinke of Florida; his sister, Janet (Gerald) Wright of Marengo; one brother, Curt Suddeth of Genoa; along with many nieces and nephews.

CHICAGO – Illinois legislators are proposing to boost immigrant protections statewide in response to President Donald Trump’s executive orders on immigration, a move advocates say would essentially give the state “sanctuary” status.

One proposal says schools, medical facilities and places of worship don’t have to give access to federal immigration authorities or local law enforcement working on their behalf.

Another proposal would limit cooperation and communication between local police and immigration authorities.

“If there was ever a moment for things to move, it is now, when we’re seeing immigrant communities under unprecedented attacks,” said Mony Ruiz-Velasco, a leader of a suburban Chicago immigrant organizing group called PASO. The legislation’s chances of passage are uncertain. Backers of Trump’s moves say he is just fulfilling promises he made during the campaign, and warn that “sanctuary” cities and states risk losing their federal funding.

Reward offered in vandalism of Chicago synagogue

CHICAGO – A community activist is offering $500 for information about the vandal who smashed a window at a downtown Chicago synagogue and put stickers with swastikas on the building’s front door.

Activist Raul Montes told the Chicago Sun-Times that he hopes the reward for what he calls a “hate crime” will prompt someone to provide information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

Chicago sued for banning ads in ride-share vehicles

CHICAGO – A lawsuit has been filed against the city of Chicago that seeks to overturn an ordinance banning advertising inside the private cars used by ride-share company drivers.

In its federal lawsuit filed Thursday, the Minneapolis-based technology company Vugo contends that the city’s ban violates the company’s constitutional rights to free speech and equal protection.

Vugo attorney Jeffrey Schwab said the regulations favor the taxi companies at the expense of Uber, Lyft and other ride-share company drivers.

Vugo’s network allows ride-share drivers to display ads, news and entertainment on a tablet attached to the back seats of their vehicles.

South Shore rail line’s 5-year plan worth $1.1 billion

CHESTERTON, Ind. – The board of trustees in charge of the South Shore commuter train line between Chicago and South Bend has approved a five-year plan worth more than $1.1 billion.

The Northwest Indiana Times reported that the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District’s Board of Trustees list includes new rail cars and rerouting the railroad near South Bend International Airport. Other plans include laying two lines of track in some areas, extending the railroad south from Hammond to Dyer and federally mandated safety projects. The Hammond-to-Dyer extension is the priciest endeavor with a $604 million price tag.

“We’re kind of playing a dangerous game,” Cabello said of Illinois’ plans, adding that Trump is simply following through on campaign promises.

“He is doing absolutely everything he said he was going to do.”

Democratic Rep. Emanuel Chris Welch of Hillside, who sponsored the schools bill, said his bill would offer peace of mind for immigrants in schools, churches or hospitals.

If all of the efforts are successful, about half of the money for the projects would come from the federal government and the other half from local sources.

White House predicts courts will reinstate travel ban

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Rebuffed in its bid for a quick reversal, the White House said Sunday it expected the courts to reaffirm President Donald Trump’s executive power and reinstate a ban on refugees and travelers from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the U.S..

The case promised to extend into Monday at least, when fresh legal filings were due, and observers had no doubt the Supreme Court ultimately will have a say.

The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in a brief order overnight, denied the administration’s request to set aside a Seattle judge’s ruling that put a temporary hold on the ban nationwide.

The lawsuit by Washington state and Minnesota said Trump’s order harmed residents and effectively mandated discrimination. Their lawyers had until 2:59 a.m. EST Monday to submit briefs opposing the government’s request. The Justice Department then had a 6 p.m. EST deadline to respond.

“We’ll accomplish the stay and will win the case on the merits,” Vice President Mike Pence said.

Members of Trump’s Republican Party scolded him for Twitter attacks on U.S. District Court Judge James Robart, appointed

by President George W. Bush, and accused Trump of stepping over the line that separates the executive from the judiciary. To Trump, Robart is a “so-called judge” whose

“ridiculous” ruling “will be overturned.”

Trump renewed his Twitter attacks against Robart on Sunday. “Just cannot believe a judge would put our country in such peril. If something happens blame him and court system. People pouring in. Bad!” He followed with another tweet saying he had instructed the Homeland Security Department to check people coming into the country but that “the courts are making the job very difficult!”

Pence defended Trump, saying “the president can criticize anybody he wants.” Pence added that he believes the American people “find it very refreshing that they not only understand this president’s mind, but they understand how he feels about things.”

At issue is the legality of a presidential action undertaken in the name of national security. Whatever the outcome and however the case drags on, a president who was used to getting his way in private business is finding, weeks into the jobs, obstacles to quickly fulfilling one of his chief campaign pledges.

“The president is not a dictator,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. “He is the chief executive of our country. And there is a tension between the branches of government.”

The government had told the appeals court that the president alone has the power to decide who can enter or stay in the U.S., an assertion that appeared to invoke the wider battle to come over illegal immigration.

When the group was investigating the Tinker Swiss Cottage in Rockford, Hawke had a direct response when she asked aloud, “Can you say my name?”

“Right now, we don’t know what they are or why we can see or hear these things,” Hawke said. “Maybe they are from another dimension or are souls or energy left behind when a person passes on. Some people call them ghosts, but we use the terms spirits or entities. We have also witnessed shadow figures, dark shadows with no features.”

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – President Donald Trump said he respects Vladimir Putin, and when told the Russian leader is “a killer,” Trump said the United States has many of them.

“What do you think? Our country’s so innocent?” he told Fox’s Bill O’Reilly in a taped interview aired Sunday on the Super Bowl pregame show.

Trump has long expressed a wish for better ties with Moscow, praised Putin and signaled that U.S.-Russia relations could be in line for a makeover, even after U.S. intelligence agencies determined that Russia meddled in the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign to help Trump defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton. Putin has called Trump a “very bright and talented man.”

During Putin’s years in power, a number of prominent Russian opposition figures and journalists have been killed.

In the interview, Trump says, “I do respect him,” then is asked why.

“I respect a lot of people, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to get along with him. He’s a leader of his country. I say it’s better to get along with Russia than not. And if Russia helps us in the fight

Trump didn’t answer directly, but asserted that immigrants in the U.S. illegally and dead people are on the voter rolls. “It’s really a bad situation, it’s really bad,” Trump said.

There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud in the Nov. 8 election.

Trump won the Electoral College vote but lost the popular vote by nearly 2.9 million votes to Clinton.

‘La La Land’ continues dance to Oscars with DGA win

The Associated Press BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – “La La Land” director Damien Chazelle waltzed off with the top honor at the Directors Guild of America Awards, Saturday. It’s the latest stop on the ebullient musical’s journey to the Oscars, but it wasn’t all song and dance at the annual awards ceremony in Beverly Hills. The evening also took on a more somber, urgent note as many directors and presenters also grappled with President Donald Trump’s refugee and immigration ban.

“I wanted to celebrate the act of dreaming and what art means. Art does connect people and transcend borders,” Chazelle said. “I want to be part of that transnational dialogue of movies.”

At 32 years old, Chazelle, a firsttime nominee, is the youngest ever recipient of the DGA feature film award which all but guarantees an eventual Oscar win on Feb. 26.

Rarely has the DGA winner not gone on to win the directing prize at the Academy Awards. “La La Land” recently won the top honor at the Producers Guild Awards and is nominated for a record-tying 14 Oscars.

Right values of leadership “I want us to be honest with one another,” a new leader on the national stage said late last week.

“We’re on the same team. We share the same mission. Honesty will undergird our foreign policy, and we’ll start by making it the basis of how we interact with each other. . . . Let us extend respect to each other, especially when we may disagree.”

The leader in question was Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and his audience consisted of State Department employees.

Wise as they were, Tillerson’s comments stood out for their rationality and evenhandedness only because they were uttered amid the rapid deterioration of such formerly commonplace standards of political culture. The president of the United States, in particular, continues to operate according to a different standard: insulting allies, intimidating civil servants, improperly threatening recipients of federal funds. Such behavior can only hurt the United States’ standing and undermine the peace abroad.

Tillerson’s remarks may reassure State’s professionals, who were told by President Donald Trump’s spokesman to “get with the program” or quit after hundreds of them signed a letter of dissent over Trump’s harsh executive order on immigration.

Alas, cleaning up after Trump could be a full-time job for Tillerson; the president’s penchant for verbal excess apparently extends even to the prime minister of a close ally, Australia, with whom he had cross words on the phone the other day. He followed that gratuitous clash with a tweet berating a U.S. commitment, inherited from the Obama administration, to resettle up to 1,250 refugees at Australia’s request as a “dumb deal.”

Trump defended his brusqueness toward the Australian prime minister and other world leaders at the National Prayer Breakfast. “Believe me. When you hear about the tough phone calls I’m having – don’t worry about it,” Trump said. “We’re going to be a little tough, folks. We’re taken advantage of by every nation in the world, virtually.”

This is wrong, spectacularly so. The U.S. occupies a privileged position atop the world’s power pyramid, and it benefits from well-designed mutual relationships such as the alliance with Australia.

Like Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis took the opportunity of his arrival to recognize a brightness in America that Trump too often misses.

“You represent an America committed to the common good,” Mattis told the uniformed and civilian members of his department and their families, “an America that is never complacent about defending its freedoms; and an America that remains a steady beacon of hope for all mankind.” He was right, but that beacon remains steady only with constant vigi– The Washington Post lance and work.

Right turn on high court will affect women A new right-wing justice won’t change the Supreme Court.

The confirmation of Neil Gorsuch – and he is quite likely to be confirmed – won’t alter its makeup. A committed ultraconservative, Gorsuch would take the place of the late Justice Antonin Scalia, who was also a committed (and combative) ultraconservative.

Still, President Donald Trump is likely to get the chance to change the court – and to abolish Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that legalized reproductive rights. Justice Anthony Kennedy, the swing voter who has kept Roe alive, is 80 years old. The reliably liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 83 and ailing. And liberal Justice Steven Breyer is 78. Their ages alone suggest relatively short service ahead.

Even though Trump was once a libertine who proudly announced his support for reproductive freedoms, he campaigned as a social conservative who would allow his right-wing supporters, including Vice President Mike Pence, to dictate his policies on social issues. And anti-abortion forces have long clamored for the chance to reverse Roe. Never mind that polls show most Americans would leave the law as it is.

According to the Pew Research Center,

Despite that, the anti-abortion crowd has grown more dogmatic and belligerent over the last several years. Across the country, Republican-led legislatures have already passed sharp restrictions on legal access to abortion, making it difficult in many places for women to receive the care they need.

And, of course, the war on Planned Parenthood has picked up steam with Trump’s election.

That suggests a Supreme Court moving dramatically rightward might go further than the old pre-Roe consensus, which allowed states to determine whether abortion would be legal. A Trump court could conceivably outlaw abortion altogether, which would take us into new political (and medical) terrain.

You doubt that would happen?

Let’s hope you’re right. But the tides of ultraconservative authoritarianism are rising, and those high waters will change

the landscape, especially for women.

This is a war on women, a battle against the modern mores that have given women control over their bodies, authority in the boardroom, agency in politics and even command on the battlefield. While younger women have seemed curiously complacent about the hard-won rights that have allowed women to advance, a Trump Supreme Court may galvanize a new generation of feminists.

If you’ve been persuaded that the anti-abortion crowd is merely interested in saving the lives of the unborn, consider the intellectual incoherence that has always been apparent in the anti-abortion movement. While a few brave Catholic priests and nuns stand up for poor babies, the majority of anti-abortion voters detest food stamps, despise Medicaid and fight housing subsidies for the poor. In other words, they oppose any and all government programs to support poor children once they are out of the womb. If they loved those babies so much, wouldn’t they want them to have decent housing and health care?

Those anti-abortion crusaders also show little enthusiasm for contraception, although broader contraceptive use is the best way to curb demand for

abortions. According to the Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit that advocates for reproductive health, the abortion rate in 2014 was the lowest ever in the United States. (The rate of unplanned pregnancies also fell, according to research published in The New England Journal of Medicine.) Researchers speculate that more widespread contraceptive use contributed to the decline.

That makes sense. If women are better able to plan their pregnancies, the demand for abortions will certainly drop. In Western Europe, where contraceptives are cheaper and more accessible, abortion rates are much lower than here.

But if Roe is overturned, don’t expect ultraconservatives to stop there. Next, they will turn up the heat on birth control. They’ve already victimized Planned Parenthood, the nation’s leading provider of low-cost family planning services to poor women. They will be emboldened to go even further.

Modernity – and feminism – will eventually win out. But the battle will be long and ugly.

News that’s above reproach? It’s all in the terminal

Democrats trust only Democratic-approved media sources, and Republicans trust only Republican-approved media sources. Perhaps the only medium that both Democrats and Republicans will accept as a valid source of information is … the stock market. With the stock market, there is a price at which one can buy or sell. And that’s that. No alleging that Fox News peddles “alternative facts,” or MSNBC spins.

Additionally, for anyone with their wealth in financial assets, movement in the stock market affects their net worth and retirement prospects. Even for conspiracy theorists who might believe the stock market is rigged by the Fed or the powers that be or whomever, at the end of the day you can log into your account or check your quarterly statement and see your account balance in dollars. No one can convince you that the Trump era

has been good for your finances if you’re looking at your decimated portfolio, and no amount of harsh news coverage of the president will change how you feel about a rising balance.

For someone as obsessed with popularity as President Donald Trump, this means that the stock market may be crucial to his mood and his perceived mandate, in a way that it hasn’t been in the past. He’s said on television that the stock market went up because business people love him. In the past there’s been the notion of a “Fed put,” that the Federal Reserve would respond to lower equity prices with more monetary stimulation. This may end up morphing into a “Trump put” by which the Trump administration may respond to a falling stock market with new tweets or executive orders meant to goose stocks higher.

More than most presidents, Trump will treat the stock market as a referendum on his administration, no different from television ratings or crowd counts.

Even if the stock market always produces a price at which someone can buy or sell, it’s subject to the same flaws and biases as political polls or partisans living inside of a filter bubble. As the Federal Reserve noted in its meeting statement this week, since the election, while measures of sentiment, including the stock market, have increased, business fixed investment remains subdued. Markets, for now, have bought into the Trump hope, but markets are inherently fickle, and a couple bad weeks of economic data or drama coming out of Washington could change the mood, and hence the markets, in a hurry.

We’re already seeing signs that hopes of “Trumpflation” may be souring in the investment community. Ray Dalio, head of Bridgewater, came out this week saying he was concerned that the populist elements of the Trump agenda could undermine the more pro-business aspects.

Street, may be in line for an ambassadorship rather than an economic advisory role, more like banishment to Siberia than a spot in the inner circle.

With the Republican majority in the Senate so slim, any loss of support would be crippling to the Trump administration. Voters more focused on their finances and businesses than on politics could look at the Democratic and Republican “filter bubbles” and not be sure which side to take. But they’ll definitely respect the market’s ups and downs.

So the stock market will be watching and reacting to Trump, while Trump watches and reacts to the stock market.

For Americans whipsawed by both, it may turn into a taxing experience, from a supposedly low-tax administration.

Illinois and Illinoisans played prominent roles in the anti-slavery movement preceding the Civil War, but were all opponents of slavery necessarily involved in the Underground Railroad?

Understanding the wide variety of motivations that might lie behind any given individual’s opposition to slavery – commitment to human rights, belief in racial equality, economic considerations and religious convictions, among others – is important to understanding the escalation to war.

As part of Black History Month, the Sycamore History Museum has invited Jeanne Schultz Angel to present “Anti-Slavery Movement in Black and White” at 7 p.m. Feb. 15. She will explore the role that the Underground Railroad played in the lives of freedom seekers and explain how one particular story illustrates connections within the network across the state.

She will examine the criteria that historians use to separate fact from fiction and determine which purported Underground Railroad sites are verifiable. She will demonstrate that the range of responses to slavery on the part of Illinoisans was more complex than the state’s designation as the

HOUSTON – Tom Brady led the Patriots to the greatest comeback in the history of the Super Bowl – if not all of American sports – on Sunday.

Playing in the first overtime period in the history of the game, former Bears tight end Martellus Bennett drew a pass interference call on De’Vondre Campbell in the end zone, giving the Patriots the ball at the 2-yard line four minutes into the frame.

Two plays later – eight plays after the Patriots called heads to win the coin flip – James White took a toss right and fell over the end zone line for a stunning 34-28 victory.

Commissioner Roger Goodell indeed presented the trophy to Patriots owner Robert Kraft amid a chorus of boos as loud as any cheer all night.

Kraft – whose franchise had feuded with the commissioner in the wake of “Deflategate” – called the Super Bowl win the sweetest yet.

“A lot has transpired in the last two years,” he said, to a roar of Patriots fans, who made up the majority of the 70,807 crowd at NRG Stadium.

Asked if he felt redemption, Brady said that it was “all positive.”

“We all brought each other back,” he said. “We never felt out of it. It was a tough battle. They’re a great team. I give them a lot of credit. We just made a few more plays than them.”

No team to trail by more than 10 ever had rallied to win the sport’s biggest game.

In the history of the NFL playoffs, teams were 93-0 when leading by 19 or more.

Until Sunday.

When Oak Forest High School alum Tevin Coleman caught a six-yard touchdown pass, beating Lincoln-Way Central’s Rob Ninkovich to the right pylon, the Falcons went up, 28-3, in the third quarter.

They didn’t score again.

Brady, who never had overcome such a large deficit, went to work with 8:31 left in the third quarter.

“He was the same as he always is – cool, calm and collected,” receiver Danny Amendola said. “He’s the leader, the general, the best ever.”

He marched the Patriots on the next drive, but it took a whopping 6:25 before White caught a five-yard pass.

Stephen Gostkowski’s extra-point attempt hit the right upright, however.

His 33-yard field goal with 9:48 to play in the game pulled the Patriots within two scores, 28-12.

The Patriots were given new life when, with 8:24 to play, linebacker Dont’a Hightower blitzed and sacked NFL MVP Matt Ryan on third and 1 – why they were throwing is anybody’s guess – and forced a fumble that was recovered by teammate Alan Branch at the Falcons’ 30.

With 5:56 remaining, Brady – who finished 43 for 62 for 466 yards and two touchdowns – found Amendola for a six-yard touchdown. White took a direct shotgun snap for a two-point conversion, and the Patriots were back within eight.

At their own 10, the Falcons came out throwing, dumping off to Devonta Freeman for a 39-yard gain. Julio Jones’ gorgeous, balletic, leaping catch down the right sideline moved the ball 27 yards to the Patriots’ 22 seemed to seal the game.

But it didn’t.

Rather than run the ball – and the clock – the Falcons kept trying to throw.

Ryan took a sack, and the Falcons

were whistled for a holding penalty, and they had to punt from their own 45 with 3:38 to play.

“We always play aggressive and play to win,” Ryan said. “We had opportunities as players, and we made some mistakes on the field.”

Brady, having scored 17 straight points, started at his own 9, down eight.

On third-and-10, Chris Hogan caught a 16-yard pass. Malcolm Mitchell caught an 11-yarder, and then Julian Edelman made one of the great catches in Super Bowl history.

Brady threw over the middle and the ball was tipped into the air by cornerback Robert Alford.

With two other Falcons defenders converging, Edelman dove back for the ball, reaching his arms between Alford’s legs, bobbling the ball once and finally securing it an inch above the grass.

With 57 seconds left, White scored on a one-yard run, setting up a twopoint conversion attempt with a tie on the line.

Brady threw left to Amendola, who scored despite a Falcons offside whistle.

Earlier, the Falcons looked like they’d run away with the game.

Freeman scored a 5-yard touchdown around the left end to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead about three minutes into the second quarter. Ryan found little-used tight end Austin Hooper – who had 19 catches all year – for a 19-yard touchdown.

Alford seemingly put the game out of reach to thwart a bizarre 15-play Patriots drive; three times, they’d fallen short on third-down passes, and three times, the Falcons gave them a first down with defensive holding penalties.

On third-and-6 from the Falcons’ 23, Alford jumped in front of a pass intended for Amendola and took off down the right sideline, outrunning Brady for an 82-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Ryan finished with 284 yards on 17of-23 passing.

Kaneland has five champs; Sycamore advances 7

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Joey Beaudoin was the No. 2 seed and looking for a showdown for a regional title against a conference rival.

Instead, an upset sent the Sycamore junior into the wrestlebacks needing two wins just to advance out of the Class 2A Sycamore Regional on Saturday.

Beaudoin picked up a pair of first-period pins to take third and pick up the final spot that advanced to next week’s Class 2A Sterling Regional, one of seven Spartans and six Kaneland wrestlers to make the sectional.

Five of those Kaneland wrestlers were individual champions – Nathan Orosco at 106, Austin Kedzie at 120, Hayden Patterson at 170, Riley Vanik at 182 and Colin Gussman at 220. Justin Montani at 113 was the only champ for the Spartans. Kaneland finished with 132 points while Rochelle won with 151. Sycamore was fourth with 128.5.

The Spartans suffered a pair of championship-round losses to Kaneland foes, with Trevor Boryla losing at 106 and Artimus Cunningham losing at 170.

“Artimus, Boryla, Joey, Montani – he won today – but they all have tough roads,” Sycamore coach Alex Nelson said. You’ve got four, five top kids there next week, and one move sepa-

rates the top three or four guys at that sectional.”

Nelson said he expects the team to bounce back in the sectionals.

“If you look at it from our standpoint, I guess better today than next week,” Nelson said. “We have to get back to some of the basics and doing things right, and hopefully for those seven guys, we can put together a good week of practice.”

Cunningham had won two straight against Patterson, although Patterson won their first match of the year in a dual meet. This time around, the pair traded escapes in regulation. Patterson ended up with a takedown in the final 15 seconds of the first overtime.

“It’s good for Hayden to get that win over Artimus and redeem those last couple of losses he had to him,” Kaneland coach Joe Orosco said. “I think it was just his commitment to his shots.

There’s been time where that hasn’t been there, and today I think he kind of committed to making it work.”

Kedzie needed just 1:01 to get his pin in the title match and spent all of 2:13 wrestling in his two matches Saturday in claiming the sectional title. He took second in the state last year.

“It’s good that I won to get that firstround bye in sectionals,” Kedzie said.

“It’ll be nice to watch everyone wrestle, see who I have, and hopefully I’ll have good results there as well.”

“I got a lot of momentum and confidence in the way I’m wrestling right now,” Montani said. “I think I peaked and I’m healthy, so I’m looking forward to it.”

By the numbers: The seven advancers for the Spartans were Boryla at 106 (second), Montani at 113 (first), Justin Silbaugh at 120 (third), Cunningham at 170 (second), Matthew Hunter at 182 (third), Nick Salsberry at 195 (third) and Beaudoin at 220 (third). Kaneland’s other advancer other than its five champs was Trevor Jones at 160 (second).

Beyond the stats: Nelson said Beaudoin had faced Belvidere’s Deon Roby a lot but usually came out on top in close matches. Roby ended up with an overtime pin this time around.

They said it: “It’s always close,” Nelson said of Beaudoin’s bout with Roby.

“A move this way or a move that way decides it. ... They’re familiar with each other and know each other best.

He came out on top today, but we can turn that around for next week.”

Up next: The sectional at Sterling starts Friday and concludes Saturday.

PREP WRESTLING: JACOBS REGIONAL

Lopez wins Barbs’ only individual regional title; 6 others in sectionals

sports@daily-chronicle.com ALGONQUIN – Apart from his size, nothing about Fabian Lopez comes off as a freshman.

His demeanor, his wrestling ability, but most of all, the DeKalb freshman’s confidence.

Throughout his freshman season at DeKalb, Lopez’s confidence has continued to grow to the point where he can call himself an individual regional champion. Lopez defeated a former state qualifier – Huntley senior Josh Stenger – by decision, 14-9, at Saturday’s Class 3A Jacobs Regional.

Lopez’s contact movement and pressure put on Stenger helped him become one of seven DeKalb wrestlers that will advance to the Barrington Individual Sectional on Friday.

“It comes from a lot of repetition,” Lopez said of his quickness and pace.

“I always tell myself in my head that no one can keep my pace. To beat a wrestler of that caliber was really nice.

“I keep hearing it from so many people. If I keep wrestling the way I have been, I could get up on that podium (at the state tournament). The confidence is just continuing to build as the caliber of wrestlers that I beat keeps getting better.”

Joining Lopez at sectionals will be Jack Evans (second at 145 pounds), Logan Roach (third at 152), Jacobe Schmerbach (second at 160), Blah Danweih (second at 170), Niels Lewrentz (third at 195) and Ethan Engelson (third at 220).

Danweih had an extremely physical battle at 170 pounds with Jacobs’ Loren Strickland. Danweih actually took an

early 6-0 lead in the first period, but was unable to hold onto the lead in a 14-8 loss by decision.

Knowing he was already locked in to go to sectionals with his finals appearance, Danweih just wanted to push himself to the limit.

“It was definitely very physical out there,” Danweih said. “I honestly just wanted to go out there, try my hardest and give it everything I had. There are some things I could have done better, but I’m happy with the way I wrestled and with the way our team (wrestled) today.”

Roach, Lewrentz and Engelson each won third-place matches, which qualified them for sectionals. Only the top three finishers from each weight class advance to sectionals.

Overall as a team, DeKalb placed fourth (133 points) at the Jacobs Re-

gional on Saturday, behind first-time regional champion Huntley (211), Hononegah (191) and host Jacobs (142).

Harlem (89) rounded out the top five.

DeKalb coach Sam Hiatt was pleased with the way his team wrestled, but it was hard to hide his excitement after Lopez’s performance.

However, at the same time, the Barbs coach has come to expect just about anything from his youngster.

“It really doesn’t even surprise me,” Hiatt said. “I mean, that’s a kid who was a returning state qualifier, and he beat him up. He also came back against a kid from Kaneland that was a returning state placer. It’s crazy to see how much better he has gotten throughout the season, and now we know he can hang in there with anyone. He’s dangerous if he keeps wrestling this way in the next couple weeks.”

Tar Heels beat Irish in relocated game The ASSOCIATED PRESS GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina still looked at home Sunday, even as it played what was supposed to be an Atlantic Coast Conference home game roughly 50 miles from its arena.

Justin Jackson scored 16 points to help No. 12 UNC beat No. 20 Notre Dame, 83-76, on Sunday in a game postponed a day and relocated from Chapel Hill to Greensboro because of a water shortage.

The postponement came Friday after the water system supplying the UNC campus and surrounding area instructed its 20,000 customers not to drink or use the water because of critically low supplies, brought on by a water-main break and the shutdown of a treatment plant.

But the Tar Heels (21-4, 9-2 ACC) still had a loud home-state crowd filled with blue behind them in a venue where they’ve played 143 times – most coming during the 26 ACC Tournaments hosted here.

The Tar Heels spent Friday night in Durham – home to rival Duke – and then stayed in Greensboro on Saturday night.

The Fighting Irish (17-7, 6-5) trailed by 15 midway through the second half before climbing back to within 75-73 on V.J. Beachem’s 3-pointer from the corner with 3:47 left.

But Berry answered with a jumper at the 3:33 mark to start an 8-0 run and turn away the comeback.

Beachem finished with 20 points while Matt Farrell had 18 for the Irish, which shot 45 percent and made nine

3-pointers.

Wisconsin 65, Indiana 60: At Madison, Wisconsin, Ethan Happ scored 20 points and gave his team a defensive spark, while Nigel Hayes added 15 and 10 rebounds in a win on Sunday over the Hoosiers.

Iowa 81, Nebraska 70: At Iowa City, Iowa, Jordan Bohannon scored 15 points, Tyler Cook added 13, and the Hawkeyes held on for a win over Nebraska on Sunday for their third straight victory.

Brady Ellingson scored 11 points off the bench and hit a late 3-pointer to help Iowa (14-10, 6-5 Big Ten) avenge a double-overtime loss at Nebraska last month.

DeKalb suffers first conference loss in boys basketball

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – DeKalb boys basketball coach Al Biancalana said poor execution cost his team in a 42-34 loss to Yorkville on Saturday, the first conference loss for the Barbs.

“Yorkville came in and out worked us,” Biancalana said. “They out-performed us. They out-executed us. Give all the credit to Yorkville.”

The Barbs (14-8 overall, 6-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) had a big third quarter after a slow first half, and the teams headed into overtime tied at 31.

Yorkville (10-11, 3-5) exploded offensively and outscored DeKalb, 34-11.

DeKalb’s only points in the overtime period came from senior Robert Mitchell, who made a tough layup, was fouled and sank his free throw. Scoring on the other end of the court was led

by Javell Moore, a junior guard for the Foxes.

“Moore is learning how to play at the varsity level and is great scorer for us,” Yorkville coach Mike Dunn said.

“He is probably our leading scorer with around eight points a game.”

Moore topped his average, scoring

11 points but was not the only Fox to perform well Saturday night. DeKalb senior guard Cole Tucker was held to just two points in the second half and eight points total. This was in large part because of the tough defense of Yorkville guard Jonathan Suarez.

“Suarez is only 5-foot-10 and is giving up a few inches to Tucker on top of the fact that Tucker is a Division I athlete,” Dunn said of the DeKalb guard and Northern Illinois signee for football. “I am proud of the way Suarez stuck with him tonight.”

The Barbs struggled to finish plays throughout much of the game. The overtime period began with DeKalb missing three short-range shots before Yorkville finally got the defensive rebound. The Barbs would finish overtime going 1 of 8 and shot 42 percent from the floor as a whole.

“The senior leadership wasn’t there tonight,” Biancalana said. “In games like this, you have to have your best players take over, and that didn’t happen. But we played like we practiced this week.”

By Game 5, the Spartans were in the lead and cruising to their second straight regional title, finishing with a 5,902 while Oregon tallied a 5,837 for the day.

Sycamore freshman Megan Kolberg was the individual champion with a 1,335, and Megan Meyer was third with a 1,245. DeKalb’s Reagan Harold qualified as an individual in fourth place with a 1,238.

“We weren’t doing anything really spectacular in the morning,” Sycamore coach Andy Hampton said.

“Game 1 was a grind. We dug ourselves a big hole. We got lucky that we drew Ottawa for Game 4, to bowl on the same lane as them. We knew we had to make up these pins, and 140 is a pretty big number and the girls decided to take it away from them.”

The result in that fourth game was beating Ottawa, 1,068-890, to take the lead for good.

“I think they felt intimidated,” GIRLS BOWLING Spartans win regional: The Sycamore Hampton said. “But we rolled what we

rolled and were in the driver’s seat.”

Alexis Kolberg rounded out the Spartans’ top 10 finishers with a 1,196, taking ninth.

DeKalb finished in seventh with a 5,157, and Kaneland was 10th with a 3,916.

Trey McCarty finished first at 195 as Genoa-Kingston finished with the third-highest point total at the Class 1A Aurora Central Catholic Regional.

Cody Orlock (113), Dalton Peters (120), Sean Logan (182) and Kelly Creadon (285) each took second. Taking third for the Cogs were Jacob Bray (106), John Ramza (138) and Tristan Mangum (170).

Spartans beat Batavia: Sycamore locked down on defense and hit its free throws in the fourth quarter for a 48-33 win at the Kaneland shootout.

jcowley@suntimes.com SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Fred Hoiberg said he has confidence in his young players.

“Absolutely,” the Bulls coach insisted after the Sunday practice.

That could be tested this week, as the Bulls announced that Jimmy Butler (right heel contusion) and Cristiano Felicio (right leg sprain) were unable to practice, and how much they play on the remainder of this six-game road trip was in doubt.

Felicio is most definitely out for at least the remainder of this week, as he recovers from the leg injury he suffered in the Houston loss.

The hope is Butler’s recovery is much quicker, as Hoiberg called him day-to-day.

“Yeah. I sat my [butt] on this bench right here,” Butler said, when asked what exactly he was able to do during the Sunday practice.

The good news was Butler went through an injury very similar to this current one last season, and didn’t miss any games with it. His performances

definitely dipped, but he played. The bad news was Butler said, “Ain’t too much you can do about it,” as far as recovery, and might take the rest-it approach.

“Yeah,” Butler said, when asked if rest was the only real option. “It’s crazy because that probably is what’s best for it. I don’t know if we’re gonna do that just yet. But it’s all about how I feel. I’ll wake up and try to do more on it [Monday] and see how it holds up.

“Right now it’s not really in pain because there ain’t no weight on it, but when you get out there, I’d rate it a six or a seven [on a pain scale]. [It] hurts.”

Hoiberg has options.

What kind of options? Well, it seems to depend on the day and the game.

In the loss to Houston, Michael Carter-Williams earned the start for Butler, and possibly played one of his better games in a Bulls uniform, scoring 23 points, grabbing nine rebounds and handing out six assists. This was the same Carter-Williams who lost his starting job two weeks ago, hinted that he might be better served elsewhere when he went four games without even getting off the bench, and now has resurfaced.

Aspirin helps heart attack patients Dear Doctor: I just read your column about a daily aspirin regimen, which raised these questions for me: If someone appears to be in the middle of a heart attack, should you try to give them an aspirin? Also, does it pay to keep aspirin in the house just for that purpose?

Dear Reader: To answer your questions, let’s first review how heart attacks happen.

They are caused by a sudden decrease of blood flow to the heart via the coronary arteries.

Although a heart attack can happen suddenly, the risk rises over time if you have vascular damage to the lining of these arteries. That damage, termed atherosclerosis, occurs when cholesterol and other substances form plaque inside the coronary arteries.

When plaque in one of the coronary arteries is disrupted, small particles in the bloodstream called platelets attach to one another at the area of the disruption and form a blood clot. This blood clot causes a sudden lack of blood flow to the muscle of the heart and thus a lack of oxygen to the heart. Without oxygen, that portion of heart muscle will die.

Aspirin targets the platelets at the core of these clots. Platelets clump together at the site of a wound. Usually, that’s a positive.

Any time you get a cut in your skin, these platelets activate and attach to one another to stop the bleeding. Aspirin reduces these platelets’ ability to attach to one another. In heart disease, aspirin works to prevent clots, but also to prevent the clots that have formed from becoming worse.

The first large study to show a benefit from aspirin among people suffering from a heart attack was a 1988 study published in the medical journal Lancet. As part of this study, researchers gave people who recently had symptoms of a heart attack either aspirin or a placebo. The aspirin was given at least 24 hours after the beginning of symptoms, with the median time being five hours after onset.

The measured death rates at five weeks of the 8,587 people who took the aspirin showed a decrease in death from vascular disease of 23 percent, compared to the 8,600 in the placebo group. It is difficult to know how much of this benefit was from the immediate aspirin and how much was from the daily aspirin given for 30 days.

In healthy people taking aspirin, the anti-platelet impact takes effect about 20 minutes after swallowing the compound. But in those who are having a heart attack, the absorption of aspirin decreases, so it may take up to two hours for aspirin to have the same effect. A 2002 study in Israel that was published in the American Journal of Cardiology showed lower death rates among people who were given aspirin sooner rather than later. The earlier users in this study received aspirin on average 1.6 hours before the onset of symptoms.

The American Heart Association recommends immediate aspirin be given at doses of 160 to 325 milligrams to people with symptoms of a heart attack. Because of the decrease in aspirin absorption in those having a heart attack, the recommendation specifies the aspirin be chewed. If someone around you is having a heart attack, the most important thing is getting that person to the hospital.

If you have an aspirin, give it to the person immediately. And, to answer your question: Yes, it would be a good idea to have aspirin in the house for this purpose.

Description of Proposed Action DeKalb County Highway Department is proposing to replace a structurally deficient bridge carrying Somonauk Road over Somonauk Creek. The location is approximately 4 miles south of Hinckley and 3 miles north of Somonauk, Illinois (see map).

The slippershell (Alasmidonta viridis) is an Illinois threatened species of freshwater mussel. Surveys conducted in 2016 by the Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS) found one fresh dead and one relict shell of this species in the project area. INHS also determined that this reach of Somonauk Creek provided suitable habitat for this listed species.

It is anticipated that all impacts will be temporary in nature, and once the new bridge structure is completed the stream habitat will recover. DeKalb County Highway Department has committed to a number of measures to avoid and reduce impacts to the habitat and this listed species that are described in detail in the Conservation Plan prepared for this project.
