People go through all sorts of hardships in life.

Whether we manage them with grace or bitterness, nonetheless, we all come out with scars.

Stress is a consequence of daily living, so being alive means we experience stress throughout the course of the day. We can turn these problems either into distress or eustress. Meaning we can choose to focus on the positive or negative.

I choose most of the time to focus on the bright side, especially when I write this column.

I recently received an email from a reader who suggested I am naive to the ways of the real world. Perhaps, I have lived a sheltered life and want my child to have the same glorious experience.

Well, I am here to tell everyone that I have personally gone through a lot at various points in my life. At times I have been angry with my maker. At times I have suffered maybe more than others ever will.

I do not want to divulge my personal trials and tribulations. I have a therapist for that.

I’d rather want to shine through it all!

My purpose for the Cheeky Mama column is to bring light and brightness to motherhood and life in general. Parenting is rough, we all know that.

Judgments are passed all the time on mothers and fathers. This piece is to prove to the readers that we can laugh instead of cry at certain situations.

These experiences I write about are told

Trying to raise children in this world is going to be tough. Lord knows that evil is lurking. However, I think it is a blessing that we cannot foresee it coming.

While I still have control over the present, my heart and soul wants my daughter to have the idyllic life. My mind knows that this is not reality. So what can I do about it? Nothing!

Boy does that irk me.

All the values in the world cannot shield her from everything. All the love in the world cannot shield her from heartbreak. I realize that. All I can do is provide all that I can.

Spend each moment in the present and pray for the future of my family.

Along the way, I hope my ridiculous experiences relate to other people. And that these experiences can bring a smile to readers’ faces.

After all the column isn’t named Cheeky Mama for nothing!

20 international students at NIU dealing with effects of executive order

DeKALB – Northern Illinois University student Atef Alghzzy is concerned about how President Donald Trump’s executive order on immigration and travel will affect him and his family.

Alghzzy has been in the U.S. for a year with his wife, who studies at Kishwaukee College, and their two children, who are 5 and 3 years old. He said he came from Damascus to pursue a master’s degree in statistics and have a better future for his family.

He said he plans to stay in the country and look for a job after graduation, but he is concerned that employers will hesitate to hire him because of his nationality.

“I feel like it will make an obstacle to find a job and continue my life,” Alghzzy said. “If they know I am Syrian, and Syrians are under the scope of immigration, they will worry that I will be deported.”

He said he feels restricted by the president’s order although he intends to remain in the country.

Alghzzy’s parents recently moved from Syria to the neighboring country of Lebanon, and he is unsure of when he will be able to see them again.

“I feel like I am now in jail here,” Alghzzy said. “If I leave, I cannot come back. It is pretty much like a jail for me.”

Trump signed an executive order Jan. 27 that stops refugees from entering the U.S. for 120 days, bars Syrian refugees indefinitely and blocks U.S. entry for 90 days for citizens of seven majority-Muslim countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

The countries were identified for limitations based on potential terrorism threats in legislation signed under the Obama administration.

Trump has said the suspensions are needed to protect the nation from terrorist infiltration and allow for vetting procedures to be strengthened, which were key promises in his presidential campaign.

However, the practical effects of this order have been to upend the lives and plans of some, including local college students.

Students asked to be patient

Stephanie Brown, associate director of the International Student and Faculty Office, said of NIU’s roughly 1,100 international students, 20 are from the seven countries affected by the president’s order.

Brown said many of those students have been coming to the office with questions such as whether they can plan to go home for the summer.

“We only know for sure about the 90 days,” she said.

“We have been asking them, as hard as it is, to be patient.”

She said those 20 students have seven dependents with them, including spouses and children, and NIU also has three students from those countries who have graduated and are in practical training as part of their student visas.

However, even those not from the seven countries affected are feeling on edge, Brown said.

“We have a lot of international students in general expressing concern because they see what the executive order has done to others,” she said. “There is a lot

Awni Alkarzon, director of international recruitment at NIU, said many Saudi Arabian students fear that another ban could be enacted to include their country.

“Imagine a doctoral student who has spent the past four or five years and hundreds of thousands of dollars on their education, then they get to the airport and are stopped,” Alkarzon said.

President Doug Baker said in a statement Monday that the university is strongly advising against international travel for students and scholars from the seven countries included in the president’s order.

The International Student and Faculty Office states on its website that citizens of those countries who leave the U.S. in the next 90 days will be unable to re-enter the country regardless of their visa status.

It also states those affected can find support in the office, and information and resources are available through the NAFSA Association of International Educators.

Alkarzon said that if U.S. immigration policy continues to target Muslims, the country will risk losing international students from all over the world, not

eolson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – On Tuesday, DeKalb School District 428 board members will consider a separation agreement with Superintendent Doug Moeller that would continue to pay him his $199,600 salary through April 30.

In return, Moeller will walk away from the two years remaining on his five-year contract and both sides will agree not to speak ill of one another.

“The two parties agree not to … make any oral or written statement to any third party that defames the superintendent, board or school district,” the agreement reads.

Moeller has been on paid leave from the district since Sept. 21, during which time he has been paid about $73,000 in salary. If the board approves the separation agreement, Moeller will be paid about $57,500 more, including 12 weeks’ pay and 15 days of unused vacation time.

Moeller also will continue to receive health insurance through the district until his retirement under the agreement.

The board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the District 428 Education Center, 901 S. 4th St., DeKalb.

The nine-page separation agreement, which Moeller already has signed, makes no mention of the sexual harassment and stalking allegations by DeKalb High School Principal Michele Albano that led to his removal.

In the agreement, Moeller and the board agree not to sue each other; and Moeller, who is in his late 50s, agrees not to make an age discrimination claim.

If asked about Moeller’s employment, District 428 will provide a form letter saying simply that Moeller was superintendent of the district from May 1, 2014, until he retired April 30.

Moeller began with the district as DeKalb High School principal in 2009.

In the agreement, both sides deny any wrongdoing in the “disputes” that have arisen regarding Moeller’s employment.

In court records seeking the order, Albano said Moeller had become upset with her after she declined to go out with him Sept. 11. She alleged that Moeller had threatened to ruin her career and intimidated her with a gun, and that he had been driving past her Elgin home, sometimes mentioning to her the vehicles that he saw there.

In a grievance filed with District 428 on Sept. 16, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, Albano said that Moeller had sought her out in April to take over as principal at DeKalb High School. Albano said that the two had developed “a personal interest” in each other over that summer, but Albano said she put the brakes on because Moeller was married and about to become her boss. After that, Moeller grew jealous, she wrote.

“Any situation that he witnessed my getting close, either physically or in a personal/professional relationship, with another male, he would find a way to strike out at me,” Albano wrote at the time.

Albano went on to detail what she called “stalking and harassing actions” by Moeller, including repeated calls, threats and other erratic behavior.

The restraining order against Moeller was lifted in October when Albano did not appear in court.

Bradley Hawk has been the interim superintendent at District 428 since Oct. 4, when he was hired to work two to three days a week, up to 100 days as superintendent. He had been paid more than $27,000 for his services through Jan. 10 of this year, in addition to the payments to Moeller.

In April 2014, Moeller signed a fiveyear employment contract to serve as District 428 superintendent through the 2018-19 school year.

Born: January 12, 1946; in DeKalb, IL Died: February 2, 2017; in DeKalb, IL Terri L. Abbott, 71, of Cortland, Illinois, died Thursday, February 2, 2017, at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb. Terri was diagnosed on December 2, 2016, with Stage IV lung cancer. She faced her diagnosis with grace, dignity and the love of her family and friends, knowing her strong belief in God would see her through.

Born January 12, 1946, in DeKalb, Illinois, the daughter of Olsen “Ole” and Evelyn Jean (Hess) Lewis, Terri married William E. Abbott on December 1, 1962.Terri was the button lady at Cortland School and a crossing guard.

She was a member of the Cortland Fire Department Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Bill; daughter, Connie (Mark) Lee of O’Fallon, Missouri; three grandchildren, Stephanie

(Bill) Heyer, Jenni (David) Hensiek, Jonathan (Ellyse Schwent) Lee; four great-grandchildren, DJ, Makayla, Bryce, Christofer; her mother, Jean Lewis of DeKalb; brother, Billy (Terrie Hemmings) Lewis of Oswego, Jack Lewis of Phoenix, Arizona; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, William E. Abbott Jr.; grandson, Kristofer and her father “Ole.” The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 6, 2017, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb with Pastor Sandi C. Graber of Rochelle officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, February 5, 2017, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb.

Judge to rule on Curl appeal in May

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – William “Billy” Curl, convicted in the 2010 murder of a Northern Illinois University freshman, was back in DeKalb County Court on Friday, pressing his case that he was coerced into pleading guilty by county prosecutors.

A judge is scheduled to rule May 1 whether Curl’s appeal can continue to an evidentiary hearing.

Curl, 40, pleaded guilty in 2013 to killing 18-year-old Antinette “Toni” Keller, whose burned remains were found in October 2010 in DeKalb’s Prairie Park. He was sentenced to 37 years in prison and is currently an inmate at Menard Correctional Center with a projected parole date of 2047, when he would be 71.

However, Curl now claims that his plea was coerced after former DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack threatened to prosecute his son in connection with the murder.

Curl also claims that he received ineffective defense from his court-appointed attorney. These accusations were highlighted in a petition for

post-conviction relief Curl filed in 2015.

Chief Circuit Judge Robbin Stuckert presided over the second stage of the appeal process, where any factual allegations are presumed to be true and the judge must determine if there is a substantial showing in the petition that the defendant’s constitutional rights were violated in order to move forward.

Regarding Curl’s claim of an inefficient defense, court-appointed criminal defense attorney Dan Transier said that his client was not given much of an opportunity to understand the evidence, meet with his attorneys or review the police reports related to the case.

First Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein argued that it was the Curl’s responsibility to show that his guilty plea resulted from his lawyer’s inefficiency, and to present a plausible defense.

Klein argued that Curl’s petition did neither and said his claim should be dismissed.

As for Curl’s claim he was coerced, Klein pointed out that Curl had previously answered “no” when asked in court if he was threatened or coerced into pleading guilty.

DeKALB – Residents will get their first opportunity to address all four mayoral candidates in April’s election during Monday’s candidate forum at the DeKalb Elks Lodge at 209 S. Annie Glidden Road.

Mayor John Rey and challengers Jerry Smith, Michael Embrey and Misty Haji-Sheikh will answer public questions on city issues for about an hour at the event, hosted by the DeKalb Kiwanis Club.

Speaking order will be determined by a random drawing.

Candidates will have five minutes for opening statements and three minutes to answer any written question.

Guests will be able to submit questions for the candidates after they arrive.

DeKalb Kiwanis Club spokesman John Smith said that the forum would be an informal event but should also be a civil discussion between candidates.

Nazanin Zinouri, who earned a master’s degree from NIU, is unable to enjoy what was supposed to be a threeweek vacation with her family in Iran because she is worried about when and if she will be able to go home to South Carolina.

“I was planning on enjoying time with family and taking care of family business,” Zinouri said Sunday in a phone interview with The Associated Press from Tehran. “But I’ve not been able to do any of them. I’m mostly just listening to the news. ... I can’t really focus or enjoy anything as much as I want. I can’t even have a normal conversation.”

Zinouri moved to the U.S. in August 2010 and went on to earn a Ph.D. in industrial engineering from Clemson University. She now works at a startup technology firm in South Carolina. She wrote Wednesday in a Facebook post that she is worried about when she will be able to return to her dog and what might happen to her belongings in her apartment and her car still parked at the airport.

“Please know that the outpouring of support means more to me than I could possibly express, and regardless of the outcome, I will always be grateful for it,” she wrote. “That said, I really want to go home.”

Alkarzon said the executive order is not only affecting people’s ability to travel, but it is also painful for them in their everyday lives.

He said a student this week confided in him that for the first time in her three years of study in the U.S., she noticed someone staring at her strangely, presumably because she wears a hijab, and she felt afraid.

Alkarzon was a professor of American literature in Gaza, but he left his home to escape war in 2009; he earned his second doctoral degree in higher education, and he and his wife attained American citizenship.

“I will always be grateful to the U.S.,” he said. “It has offered me education, freedom and safety. How could I betray this country?”

Munger hired as a deputy governor

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner announced Friday he has hired former state Comptroller Leslie Munger to serve as a deputy governor, saying she will focus on long-term budgeting and work with human services organizations hit hard by the state budget impasse.

Munger will serve in addition to current Deputy Governor Trey Childress and will earn $135,000 annually, the same amount the Lincolnshire Republican made as comptroller.

Rauner appointed Munger to serve as comptroller in 2015, after Judy Baar Topinka died. She lost a November re-election bid to Democrat Susana Mendoza.

“Leslie’s vast business, human services and government experiences make her uniquely qualified to serve in this important role,” the Republican governor said in a statement first

News from across the state Attorney wants charges against cop dismissed

CHICAGO – Attorneys for a white Chicago police officer charged in the death of a black teen who was shot 16 times said Friday that grand jurors were wrongly told that officers tampered with audio and video recordings of the fatal encounter.

Jason Van Dyke’s Jason attorney urged a judge to Van Dyke throw out the first-degree murder charges in the 2014 death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

“There was a rush to sacrifice Jason Van Dyke to the angry mob out there,” defense attorney Daniel Herbert told a Cook County judge.

Herbert said the new motion focuses on a “whole different set of irregularities that were done” before grand jurors. He said grand jurors also were wrongly told that McDonald was shot in the back at first.

McDonald’s death prompted a Justice Department investigation that found Chicago police had violated people’s constitutional rights. Van Dyke was the first Chicago officer in nearly 35 years to be charged with first-degree murder for an on-duty fatality.

Van Dyke is scheduled to be back in court March 23.

New bill would let teens join organ donor registry

SPRINGFIELD – Legislation has been introduced in the Legislature that would allow 16- and 17-year-olds to register for the state’s organ and tissue donor registry.

The legislation has the backing of Secretary of State Jesse White’s office.

It was introduced by state Sen. Mattie

Hunter of Chicago and state Rep. Deb Conroy of Villa Park, both Democrats.

The measure would let 16- and 17-yearolds become part of the registry when they register to drive or register for their state identification card. It would amend the Illinois Anatomical Gift Act, which requires those joining the donor registry to be at least age 18.

Those younger than age 18 who register would give consent to donate their organs and tissues, but only after efforts have been made to contact a parent or guardian.

Police: Monee man found dead after killing wife

MONEE – Authorities said a Monee man fatally shot his wife and wounded another family member before apparently killing himself.

Monee police said Damien Lee shot his wife Tiffany Lee and the other family member Wednesday night and drove away before officers arrived. Police said Tiffany Lee was pronounced dead at a hospital and the other victim was in serious condition.

After a report that Damien Lee’s vehicle was spotted, officers from the Will County Sheriff’s Office and University Park police found him dead. Cause and

manner of his death are under investigation, but police said they don’t think anyone else was involved in the deaths.

Police are investigating what prompted shooting.

Ex-trooper gets probation for bribery, misconduct

DANVILLE – A former Illinois state trooper convicted of bribing a police officer to ticket his former girlfriend has been sentenced to probation.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reported that 47-year-old Keith Lumsargis received the sentence Thursday from Circuit Court Judge Nancy Fahey.

Vermilion County State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy had asked the court for a four-year prison sentence.

Jurors in November found Lumsargis guilty of two counts of bribery and two counts of official misconduct for offering a police officer a steak dinner for giving his ex-girlfriend a traffic ticket.

Lumsargis testified his actions were out of concern for the woman’s teenage daughter, who might have been in the vehicle with her when she’d been drinking. But prosecutors contended he was trying to get back at her for breaking up with him.

Trump orders review of banking regulations The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump launched his long-promised attack Friday on banking rules that were rushed into law after the nation’s economic crisis, signing new orders after meeting with business and investment chiefs and pledging further action to free big banks from restrictions. Wall Street cheered him on, but Trump risks disillusioning his working-class voters.

He directed his Treasury secretary to review the devilishly complex 2010 DoddFrank financial oversight law, which was signed by President Barack Obama to overhaul regulations after the financial and housing crisis of the past decade. It aimed to restrain banks’ from misdeeds that many blamed for the crisis.

The new president also signed a memorandum instructing the Labor Department to delay an Obama-era rule that requires financial professionals who charge commissions to put their clients’ best interests first when giving advice on retirement investments.

While the order on DoddFrank, named after its Democratic sponsors, won’t have an immediate effect, Trump’s intent is clear. The law has been a disaster in restricting banks’ activities, he said earlier this week. “We’re going to be doing a big number on Dodd-Frank.”

Beyond being fed up with bailouts, consumers have an interest in the Financial Protection Bureau, which expanded regulators’ ability to police a wide array of financial products and services.

During his campaign, Trump pledged to repeal and replace the law, but he also railed against Wall Street excess and vowed to hold the industry accountable for the crisis. His rhetoric left questions about how closely he would align with the financial services industries’ years-long fight to undo regulations they view as burdensome.

Since winning the White House, Trump has cleared up some of those questions. He has filled his administration with millionaires and financiers and signed the orders after meeting with top CEOs and banking executives.

Thumbs-down to lie that cost black teenager his life Thumbs-down: To the lie behind a decades-old story of racial injustice. Emmett Till was a 14-year-old black boy who was tortured and killed in Mississippi in 1955, no one ever was convicted of his homicide although two men admitted to doing it. Last week, we learned that the story that led to Till’s killing had been fabricated. Historian Timothy B. Tyson said he interviewed the woman who made the original allegations, that Till had bragged about dating white women in Chicago and grabbed her. The woman, Carolyn Donham, admitted the allegations as reported were not true. At least Donham has finally admitted this so that history can properly note that unchecked racial hatred – and nothing more – was the only cause of Till’s death.

Thumbs-down: To six more weeks of winter.

Considering Punxsutawney Phil at Gobbler’s Knob and Woodstock Willie on the Square both reported, in groundhogese, that they saw their shadow Thursday, it looks as if there’s no getting out of several more cold, gray weeks. On the upside, at least it’s been a relatively mild winter so far.

Thumbs-up: To redevelopment plans in downtown DeKalb. The fact that a developer is putting forward plans for the vacant building at 112-118 E. Lincoln Highway, as well as two other buildings, is encouraging. Principal developer John Pappas plans to demolish the vacant building at 112-118 E. Lincoln Highway, and three other buildings, and build a 55-unit apartment complex with retail space in their place. Granted, the city has yet to hear details of this project – or how much tax increment financing revenue Pappas wants to subsidize it – but the plan could be very positive for the city both by bringing new retail space and adding full-time residents to the downtown area.

Thumbs-up: For a move toward school consolidation. Leland School District 1 has reached out to DeKalb County districts including at Indian Creek School District 425 about the possibility of consolidation. Enrollment in Leland is fewer than 300 students this year in K-12, and Indian Creek officials plan to form a committee to explore a consolidation plan. We hope it succeeds, as there are too many units of local government in Illinois. Reducing them can reduce administrative and other costs, and in turn the burden on local property taxpayers.

Chance to teach Iran a lesson

Iran’s recent test of a medium-range ballistic missile is an early indicator that it doesn’t fear the bellicose rhetoric of Donald Trump any more than it did the passive approach of Barack Obama. Unfortunately, the Trump administration’s immediate response – National Security Adviser Michael Flynn said the U.S. is “officially putting Iran on notice” – seems straight out of the Obama playbook.

The president needs to get beyond his vague campaign statements about standing up to Iran. When the regime breaches its obligations under the 2015 nuclear pact – or even tests its boundaries – the U.S. needs to be ready with specific penalties.

One possible step is delaying the sale of 80 passenger jets and parts by Boeing. These planes are not just vital to resurrecting Iran’s commercial airline industry; they could be used to ferry military supplies to Tehran’s

proxy forces such as Hezbollah, the Lebanese terrorist group.

The U.S. could also levy more sanctions on people and entities – Iranian and from other countries – involved with the Revolutionary Guard Corps, the elite military force that has gradually become the state’s biggest industrial conglomerate.

The message would be clear: Do business with Iran’s military, and lose access to the U.S. banking system. And Washington’s best leverage continues to be the financial measures that have kept Iran from getting its hands on much of the formerly frozen global money that was theoretically freed up by the nuclear pact. Trump should warn them that future missile tests will make the U.S. increasingly less willing to cut a deal.

The Obama administration tended to look the other way at Iran’s missile testing. So it was a refreshing contrast to see

the new U.S. ambassador to the U.N., Nikki Haley, call the test “absolutely unacceptable” and promise strong countermeasures.

But such a response isn’t likely to come via the Security Council, where the U.S. called for an emergency meeting and where Iran’s new ally Russia holds veto power. The Trump administration has another option: working with the U.K. and other allies on potential bilateral punishments, or – more likely – on steps to keep their corporations from rushing into the Iranian economy.

Iran has frightening goals: creating a so-called Shiite crescent from Tehran to Beirut, destabilizing its Middle Eastern rivals, and becoming a global geopolitical player. The U.S. can do more to counter these ambitions, but it shouldn’t have to act alone.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

“Protecting” jobs with bans and tariffs is counterproductive.

You Trump fans will sneer at that, but please, hear me out.

Yes, some steelworkers’ jobs are saved by buy-American edicts, but more jobs will be lost.

It’s hard to recognize this because of what a conflict economist Frederic Bastiat called “the seen vs. the unseen.”

We see the jobs at a steel plant.

If it closes, our cameras record the moment. We interview the workers on their last day. Our hearts break at their disappointment. Many won’t find other jobs, or jobs that pay as well. We want to “do something” to help.

What we don’t as easily see, however, are the many jobs created if companies are free to use steel that’s a little cheaper.

We don’t see the jobs created by the dynamism that results when people are free to buy and sell all over the world.

Alternatively, we don’t easily see the jobs that never get created because tariffs or “buy American” rules make ingredients more expensive.

The media never show those jobs, but they are very real nevertheless.

History makes it clear: Where trade is free, prosperity follows.

When it is restricted, stagnation follows.

Open societies are better than the alternative. In 1400, China led the world. They invented gunpowder, the compass, the clock, real paper and printing.

Then they walled themselves off.

They burned the trading ships. The emperor wanted to “protect” the Chinese from outsiders.

The result was stagnation. By last century (before free market reforms), China was one of the poorest nations on earth.

In his inaugural speech, Trump promised to take power from Washington and give it “back to you, the people.”

America “must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies and destroying our jobs.”

At Cafe Hayek, economist Don Boudreaux writes, “Overlook the absurd suggestion that foreigners who peacefully offer to sell to us attractive products at low prices are akin to invading armies ... Trump’s incessant promise to raise trade barriers is a promise to reduce each American’s freedom to spend his or her money as he or she chooses ... a pledge to give to politicians and bureaucrats in the capital city more authority.”

Still, I want to give Trump the benefit of the doubt.

But historian Robert Higgs asks: “Why do some libertarians cut Trump so much slack? ... Someone who enjoys thumbing his nose at the political establishment (poses) his own brand of threat to your life, liberty, and property. Trump talks about many things. ... But ... there is one topic that he never mentions, and that is freedom.”

It’s true. I never hear Trump say the word.

I wish he knew what it really means.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Wind turbines harm environment, landscape

To the Editor: I strongly disagree with any proposal to put in wind turbines.

These turbines turn the landscape into an ugly display of lights at night with their strobes and red beacons, not to mention the view. They are killing the bald eagle, hawks, owls and other large birds, like the heron, leaving things pretty barren.

Imagine a predatory bird flying at night chasing prey and it encounters the blades on these things. I have seen two communities, one in Illinois and one in Wisconsin, that would cause the old Native American to come to tears.

I would never buy property near either one of these sites and will probably move if these things are built within sight of Sycamore or DeKalb.

Paw Paw is a good place to start, but you can also see farms of these turbines in Randolph, Wisconsin, not too

far from the Dells. Wisconsin as far as I’m aware halted the building of these turbines after looking at the destruction they caused to the landscape and wildlife.

Of course, if your computer and printer have to be left on and represent that part of your life that you can not give up, then welcome wind turbines when they come to your backyard.

If our politicians decide to litter the landscape with these things, others of us will have to make some serious decisions about our future in DeKalb County.

Trump needs to earn Americans’ trust

To the Editor: If Donald Trump wants people to “give him a chance,” he needs to earn our respect and trust. Raving about

nonexistent crowds at his inauguration and unleashing an extremist agenda is not the way to do that.

These are the facts about the recent election: 54 percent of the voters chose someone other than Trump.

Trump did not even get a plurality of votes, coming in second by nearly 3 million votes.

Meanwhile, 6 million more people voted for Democratic Senate candidates than for Republican Senate candidates. The 52 Republicans who now run the Senate, coming disproportionately from smaller states, represent only 45 percent of the population, while the “minority” Democrats represent 55 percent of the population.

In the House, while Republicans hold 55 percent of the seats, Democrats received virtually the same number of popular votes as they did (about 48 percent each), the difference in actual seats won coming from aggressive Republican gerrymandering on an unprecedented scale.

For the first time in our history, we live under institutionalized minority rule. The only federal institution left that represents the majority of voters is the Senate filibuster!

Republicans say “these are the rules,” as if it were all just a big game.

But if democracy means anything, it is that the government should accurately reflect the will of the voters. After all, when the ayatollahs of Iran or the communists of China impose minority rule against the will of their voters, they are just following their rules, too.

Trump has an opportunity to bring this country together by practicing moderation and reaching out to his opponents in the spirit of compromise.

That is his only mandate.

So far, he has failed utterly. Until he begins to listen to the voice of the people, resistance to his actions is the only way to protect our democracy.

No! The bubble burst. My fantasy died.

I wasn’t a big President Donald Trump backer – on TV I have called him a bully, a narcissist, etc. – but his first days were thrilling!

Finally, a president who meant it when he said he’d cut red tape that kills growth, a man who mocks political correctness and sneers at leftist reporters.

Finally, an executive choosing good people: Andy Puzder, Scott Pruitt, Betsy DeVos, Mick Mulvaney, Mike Pompeo ... .

These are not the political hacks I’ve come to expect from D.C. – not the smug bureaucracy-lovers Hillary Clinton would have inflicted on us.

These are people who understand the limits of government command and control, people eager to lift the web of opportunity-smothering rules.

Trump revived the Keystone Pipeline, froze federal hiring. Wow. But then he broke my heart.

His immigrant ban is bad. I won’t write about it until I know more. But even before that, he said he’d impose a 20 percent tax on Mexican imports, and he trashed trade by insisting that “we want the (Keystone) pipe to be manufactured here!”

I know – he said stuff like that when campaigning, but I didn’t think

eKALB – The way teammates and coaches talked about DeKalb freshman wrestler Fabian Lopez, it made him out to be a mythical figure.

After a decorated youth career coming up through Clinton Rosette Middle School, Lopez now has made his mark at the high school level for the Barbs and has racked up a 32-5 record heading into today’s Class 3A Jacobs Regional.

“I never met him personally, but I always heard of Fabian,” said Engleson, who is 28-11 on the season. “I heard about him through the middle school coaches, and they’re like, ‘Fabian’s pretty good.’ When he came in and started wrestling, I was like, ‘OK, this kid is pretty dang good.’ ” Lopez, who wrestles at 120 pounds, took first at the Conant Invite.

Adding to the mystique of Lopez’s story, he came into the season after being sidelined by a dislocated elbow that he suffered at the Schoolboy National Duals in June in Indianapolis. Hiatt said Lopez didn’t get cleared medically until right before the season.

Lopez said although there isn’t much expectations for freshmen in the postseason, he has his sights set on making it to the Class 3A state tournament. Despite the season full of wins, it was a loss that gave Lopez the most confidence.

Facing off against No. 5-ranked senior Charles Faber (Glenbard West) earlier in the season, Faber came away with an 8-6 victory, but Lopez left with the feeling that he could hang with anybody in the state.

“It’s weird,” he said. “I’ve had good wins, but sometimes losses can tell a lot about a person, too. I held my own in that match. ... He did a lot of backing up. I held my own.”

Sycamore wrestling coach Alex Nelson said his wrestlers are focused on one match at a time heading into today’s Class 2A Sycamore Regional. Kaneland coach Joe Orosco has a smaller group he said he’s thinking can qualify – a core group of five that have been strong all year. In addition to Gussman, Patterson and Nathan Orosco, he said Austin Kedzie – runner-up at state last year – at 120 and Riley Vanik at 220 should kick off long postseason runs today. He also said Trevor Jones at 160 could have a chance of advancing to Sterling.

“We just are trying to keep sharp because those five kids should make it through no problem, but you don’t want them to lose focus on what ultimately they have to do [today],” Joe Orosco said.

G-K will be at the ACC Regional, with the Byron Sectional set for next week for any top three finishers.

Coach Chad Wilmarth said he expects his pair of seniors – Trey McCarty at 195 and Brandon Mangum at 220 – to prolong their season by at least a week.

“Now is the time everybody has to wrestle at the top of their game,” Wilmarth said. “We talk about it all year, how it’s kind of practice up until this point, and now is when you have to be in the top three, and to do that, you have to be on top of your game.”

In 3A, the top four wrestlers will advance to the sectional round, with the Barbs going from the Jacobs Regional today to the Barrington Sectional next week.

“The goal is to advance to next week,” coach Sam Hiatt said “I want to see people step up. There’s pressure here, but it’s what we tell the room, pressure is a good thing.”

Weber powers Knights past Barbs Kaneland guard nearly outscores DeKalb in 2nd half

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The scores after the first two quarters were low – 2-1, and then 8-6.

But Jenni Weber took over in the second half, powering Kaneland to a 35-22 win over DeKalb on Friday night in Northern Illinois Big 12 East girls basketball action.

Weber scored a game-high 20 points, while no other player scored more than five points.

In the first quarter, neither team could buy a bucket as DeKalb (5-22 overall, 1-11 NI Big 12 East) managed to score only one free throw. Kaneland (19-5, 9-1) managed only one field goal, which came with 1:15 left in the quarter. The only player who managed to get going in the first half was Weber, who scored six of the teams eight firsthalf points on her way to a dominating performance.

Both teams came out firing at the start of the second half as the pace picked up. Haley Brown scored all of her team-high five points for the Barbs in the third quarter. But Weber drained four baskets as Kaneland pulled away.

“We got timid in the first half, so we talked about it in the locker room and we gained more confidence and played stronger and more physical and played our game,” Weber said.

Weber’s confidence was not a problem in the second half as she (14 points) almost outscored the Barbs (16) in the second half. “[Weber] took good shots,” Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said. “She was patient. She didn’t force shots. I thought she made a couple good reads off of screens.”

Although the Barbs hung around for the first half, Weber and the Knights proved too much for the home team.

“They were missing shots in the first half and making shots in the second half,” DeKalb coach Elliot Whitefield said. “They had wide-open looks. ... As long as we keep throwing the ball away and limiting our opportunities with our shot attempts, its going to keep going like it is.”

Beyond the stats: The twin towers of Addie and Grace Ringel each had a pair of impressive blocks for the Knights to keep momentum from the Barbs in the second half.

They said it: On the referees allowing a lot of contact: “I don’t know what the refs were doing. Neither coach was pleased with that,” Whitefield said.

“There was a lot of pushing and grabbing both ways. ... I think both teams were frustrated with the how the game was going,” Colombe said.

Up next: The Barbs face South Elgin at home for senior night Tuesday.

There will be plenty of nostalgia today at the NIU Convocation Center.

With the Northern Illinois men’s and women’s basketball teams participating in an afternoon doubleheader, the Huskies are bringing back more than 60 former players and coaches and will be honoring the late John McDougal, a legendary NIU coach who died in October, with a halftime ceremony during the men’s game.

The NIU women’s team tips off against Western Michigan at 1 p.m.

The men will take on Eastern Michigan around 3:30 p.m.

It will be a who’s who of former Huskie greats in the crowd. On the men’s side, Kenny Battle (1986 AP honorable mention All-American), Matt Hicks (1977 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year), Alley Rayhorn (third in career scoring), Donald Whiteside (first

Lisa Foss (all-time leading scorer), Carol Owens (second all-time in points and rebounds, former coach), Tammy Hinchee (all-time leading rebounder) and EC Hill (first team All-American) will be part of the group returning.

The women’s basketball alums are hosting a pregame reception for all fans in the south lobby starting at noon and a postgame reception in the same spot with the current team and the alums.

The NIU women (15-5 overall, 8-1 MAC West) enter the game against Western Michigan (14-6 , 5-4 MAC West) alone atop the conference standings and have won nine out of their past 10 contests – including a high-scoring 10196 victory at Ball State to take control of first place. It was the eighth time that the Huskies have scored at least 90 points this season, and they’re third in the nation in points a game (89.1).

The NIU men (13-9, 5-4 MAC West) are looking to snap a three-game home losing streak after squandering a 15-point lead Tuesday in a 76-73 loss to Akron. However, the Huskies still are in a three-way tie for third place in the conference – including with Eastern Michigan (13-9, 5-4 MAC West).

HOUSTON – James Harden had 42 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists to rally the Houston Rockets past the Bulls, 121117, in overtime Friday night.

Harden hit a step-back jumper over Paul Zipser with 36.1 seconds remaining in the extra period and was fouled. He made the free throw to give the Rockets a two-point lead they never relinquished.

After losing to Atlanta on Thursday night, the Rockets improved to 12-1 this season in the second of back-to-back games.

The Bulls played without star forward Jimmy Butler, who was nursing a bruised heel.

The Rockets built a lead that reached 17 midway through the second quarter as they opened the period on a 26-7 run, all with Harden on the bench. The Bulls cut Houston’s lead to 60-49 at halftime.

The Bulls started the third quarter on a run of their own, outscoring the Rockets, 24-12, out of the extended halftime break and entered the fourth quarter with a two-point lead.

Pats have experience; Falcons have playmakers

HOUSTON – Of all the game previews I’ve written this season, this matchup between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI is by far the most difficult to figure.

There is no question these clubs have the two best offenses and two best quarterbacks in the NFL this season.

New England appears to have an edge on defense, but the adolescent Falcons defense has been closing the gap quickly.

You have to give the Patriots a clear edge in coaching with Bill Belichick, but Dan Quinn is the architect of the Seattle defenses that have given the Pats more trouble than any other team in the league in recent seasons, and Atlanta offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and defensive coordinator Richard Smith are the only pair in the league who can rival their Patriot counterparts Josh McDaniels and Matt Patricia.

Like Belichick, Tom Brady rates an edge over anybody, and that’s why New England was fourth in total offense this season, seventh in rushing, fourth in passing, first in interception percentage, fourth on third down, sixth in time of possession and third in points scored.

Statistically, the Falcons’ defense can’t touch the Pats’ offense, and it particularly is troubling that Atlanta

But Atlanta’s defense has been trending up with a bullet, allowing only 20.5 points a game in its past eight after giving up 28.3 points a game in the first 10.

More to the point, second-year stars Vic Beasley, Jalen Collins, Ricardo Allen and Grady Jarrett and rookies Keanu Neal, Deion Jones, DeVondre Campbell and Brian Poole didn’t all get on the field together until Week 6, and didn’t get the scheme down until their Week 11 bye.

Matchups that could favor Atlanta include Collins and Poole’s abilities to handle any of the Patriots wideouts, and the speed and athleticism of Neal, Allen, Jones and Campbell could neutralize a lot of what Brady loves to do with his backs catching the ball out of the backfield.

That said, there’s no reason to be confident Atlanta can hurry Brady – expect

Nate Solder to do a nice job of getting his hands on Beasley – and the three-time Super Bowl MVP is lethal with time to read the field, and LeGarrette Blount might prove to be a consistent hammer the Falcons have no answer for.

Flipping things around, impossible as it might seem, Atlanta’s offense actually is a few hairs better than New England’s.

This year, the Falcons were second in total offense, fifth in rushing, first in passing, 11th on third down, and, most importantly, No. 1 in points scored.

Herein lies the irresistible force meeting the immovable object, as the Patriots’ No. 1 scoring defense also was eighth in total defense, third against the run, 12th against the pass and seventh on third down.

This, however, is where we might have to throw out the numbers, as Matt Ryan and Julio Jones are arguably the best in the league at their positions this season, Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman are the best running back tandem in the league, and Mohamed Sanu and Taylor Gabriel will create matchup problems if the Patriots dedicate people to take away Jones, Freeman and Coleman.

One potential trouble spot for the Falcons is as much as Alex Mack

(questionable with a left fibula injury) and Jake Matthews have solidified the offensive line, they were only 24th in sacks allowed while the Patriots are 18th rushing the passer.

New England doesn’t have a sack-master to match Beasley, but Trey Flowers, Rob Ninkovich, Chris Long and Jabaal Sheard all can bring it at any given moment, and expect Patricia and Belichick to show Ryan and Shanahan a few pressure packages they haven’t seen before.

New England rates a big edge covering kicks and punts, while both clubs are weak in the return game, and the two basically are even in turnover/takeaway ratio with the Pats at plus-12 and Atlanta plus-11.

At the end of the day, New England rates an edge in the numbers while the Falcons might own a slight edge in some of the player matchups.

It looks to me as if the safest bet on this one could be at least 60 points or more on the scoreboard when the final gun goes off.

In studies of psoriasis patients whose diets included fish oil supplements to add omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, a measurable number of participants reported fewer and less severe flare-ups. When they stopped following the diet, the benefits also waned.

Gluten sensitivity also may play a role.

In a study of individuals with antibodies to gliadin, one of the proteins that are present in wheat, following a gluten-free diet lessened psoriasis symptoms. When gluten was reintroduced to the diet, flare-ups became more frequent.

If you’re interested in modifying your own diet, the National Psoriasis Foundation offers some guidelines. Foods to add to your diet include leafy green vegetables and colorful fruits such as spinach, kale, broccoli, squash and blueberries. Foods that are a natural source of omega-3 fatty oils also are on the list. They include cold-water fish, olive oil, walnuts and pumpkin seeds.

The foundation recommends people with psoriasis avoid processed foods, refined sugar and fatty red meat. Research shows maintaining a healthy weight is important as well.

The idea is when you have an inflammatory disease, steering clear of foods with inflammatory effects can help. Whatever the outcome, the result is a more healthful diet.

Dear Doctors: I’ve had psoriasis for close to seven years, and lately it has been flaring up more often. Is there anything I can do with my diet to control this, or even prevent it from happening?

Dear Reader: That’s a good question.

Thanks to the growing body of research detailing the link between inflammation and chronic disease, there are some equally intriguing answers. To explore it further, let’s start with what psoriasis is.

When you have psoriasis, your immune system has gone a bit haywire. It’s sending faulty danger signals that cause skin cells to grow at 10 times their normal rate. That’s much faster than your body can process and shed them, and the result is raised and itchy patches of red skin, often covered with silvery scales. Typically, these appear on the knees, elbows and scalp, but may also be present on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet and along the torso.

Although there is a complex genetic component to psoriasis, environmental factors also are at play. Stress, infection, certain medications, smoking and alcohol use all have been shown to be potential triggers for flare-ups.

The results of that research we mentioned make it increasingly clear inflammation is a factor in many chronic and degenerative diseases, including heart disease, diabetes and many cancers. Since inflammation plays a significant role in psoriasis, a lot of attention now is being paid to your question of whether diet may affect the disease.

Due to the way psoriasis behaves, drawing conclusions can be difficult. Flare-ups are followed by periods of dormancy, which give way again to subsequent flare-ups. Since the nature of the disease is to fluctuate, connecting the dots between a specific dietary or behavioral change, and the absence or presence of flare-ups, is a challenge.

South needs a lot of luck and should assume that West has 5-5-12 distribution. Declarer takes East’s spade king with the ace, cashes the diamond ace (great news!), then turns to the clubs. South pitches the heart eight on the third high club, ruffs a club and leads the spade jack (or eight). West wins and, say, leads another spade. Declarer ruffs with dummy’s diamond king, then discards his last spade on the high club eight.

East ruffs, but that is the second and last defensive trick.
