When Barbara Hale became ‘DeKalb’s own’ Actress Barbara Hale died at her home in Sherman Oaks, California, last week at age 94, and since then, several people have pointed out the connection she had to DeKalb.

Hale had some connections to the area, but it was probably a visit she made in 1951 that led many to consider her “DeKalb’s own.”

Hale was born April 18, 1922, in the DeKalb Public Hospital, and attended the McMurry School – a practice school at what is now McMurry Hall on the Northern Illinois University campus – before moving to Rockford as a young child, according to Daily Chronicle reports from the time.

Hale grew up in Rockford, where she won a beauty pageant, then went on to a career as a model and leading woman in films in the 1940s and ’50s opposite actors including James Stewart, James Cagney, Robert Mitchum and her actor husband, Bill Williams.

It seems unimaginable today, but in October 1951, Hollywood launched a weeklong marketing initiative called “Movietime U.S.A.,” designed to bring movie stars and writers to towns across America to interact with regular people.

Hale, along with Williams, actress Alice Kelly and screenwriter Valentine Davis (writer of “On the Riviera” and “Miracle on 34th Street”), came to DeKalb County on the morning of Oct. 12, 1951. They paraded through Genoa, and then down State Street in Sycamore, where they were led by the Spartans’ marching band. Then they came to DeKalb.

A front-page story in the next afternoon’s Daily Chronicle reported that the DeKalb Township High School band led them up Seventh Street to Lincoln Highway, from there to a platform at the Memorial Clock, which at the time was at Third Street and Lincoln.

About 2,000 people crowded around the platform, and the reporter noted that the visiting stars were “visibly startled with the crowds.”

Later, at a luncheon at The Cabin, Hale posed for a photo with several of her relatives, including an uncle, Justus Hale of Maple Park, and his wife, “Mrs. Justus Hale.”

The visit left an impression that was remembered for years. When Hale’s next film, Columbia Pictures’ “The First Time,” was shown in DeKalb, the ads reminded the public of Hale’s “unforgettable visit to DeKalb in person last fall!”

The DeKalb theater, billed as “The Theatre of Tomorrow,” in 1953 ran a photo of “DeKalb’s own Barbara Hale” to plug the new Technicolor hit “Last of the Comanches,” in which she starred with Broderick Crawford.

Hale took on the role of tenacious legal secretary Della Street in the “Perry Mason” show on CBS in 1957, and won an Emmy while working with Raymond Burr in the original series that lasted until 1966 on CBS. She reprised the role several times in Perry Mason TV movies from 1985 to ’95.

Hale did have relatives in DeKalb. A 1959 visit to see an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Scruggs Colvin, and others, was noted in the society pages.

However, after the 1950s ended, her association with DeKalb in the popular mind faded. Later mentions of her in the Chronicle rarely brought up the DeKalb connection.

Sled hill may be built from sanitary project leftovers

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The planned $52 million project to modernize and expand the DeKalb Sanitary District’s wastewater treatment plant could have an unexpected side benefit: A new sled hill in Hopkins Park.

Sanitary district executive director Mark Eddington said he had met with the DeKalb Park District in December to reintroduce the idea of a sled hill – which has been considered by the park district for years – after realizing the amount of excess material the project’s construction could generate. Officials estimate the work will require removal of 125,000 cubic yards of dirt, enough to fill 7,000 dump trucks.

“The project will include a lot of excavation, and we can’t use this excess material on site,” Eddington said. “So we thought, ‘What’s the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to take advantage of this excess material?’ ” The sanitary district project went out for bidding Monday. The bid opening will be March 15, and provided the district accepts one, work could begin in August, records show.

Most of the excavation will be needed to install aeration tanks, one of which Eddington said is about the length of a football field, and 18- to 20feet deep.

The plan would be to haul the excavated dirt to a spot in Hopkins Park northeast of the water treatment plant, which the park district leases from the sanitary district. The land, which is now covered in scrub brush, is along an asphalt path that leads from the parking lot outside the park administration building to the baseball diamonds.

To avoid trucks having to turn onto Sycamore Road to move the dirt, an access road has been proposed to allow vehicles to cut through plant property and onto the sled hill site.

Eddington said he wasn’t sure where the dirt would be hauled if the sled hill plans fell through, as a general contractor usually makes the arrangements to carry out excess materials.

DeKalb superintendent of parks and development ly approved Hopkins Park as the location of the hill and voted to move forward with engineering proposals for the hill’s design during Tuesday’s special meeting.

Superintendent of Parks and Development Mat Emken said it’s too early to determine a cost for the project, and he doesn’t think there are any city statutes that would limit the

size of the hill.

“It’s not just about the proximity to the sanitary district, but as the flagship park of the district and a lot of people already coming here, it would be just another great amenity for this park,” Emken said. “The size of the park already lends itself to winter activities, so this just makes it more of a destination park for the winter months.”

It would be up to the engineer to determine how much of the 125,000 cubic yards of dirt would be needed, but officials said the sanitary district needs to have a commitment from the park district on how much dirt it will accept by March 1.

Once the park board approves an engineer’s design plan for the hill and an amount of dirt is decided upon, the two districts would enter into an intergovernmental agreement to allow the sanitary district to move the dirt

to Hopkins Park.

However, children should not be rushing to grab their sleds right away.

The project may not be completed until 2020.

The sanitary district’s redevelopment is expected to start sometime in August, pending board approval, and would last for about three years. Park staff are currently looking into the best time to enter into contract for the sled hill’s construction so it coincides with the excavation of the required dirt.

A timeline for when excavation could begin on the treatment plant modernization is unknown but could take as long as 12 to 18 months.

The construction of the sled hill, in addition to turf restoration, landscaping, fencing and accessible pathways, might not be complete by the winter of 2018-19, depending on the sanitary district’s work.

Rosati’s set to open sports pub Rosati’s Pizza Sports Pub

DeKALB – Pizza lovers in DeKalb soon will have a new option with the opening of Rosati’s Pizza Sports Pub scheduled for this weekend near the intersection of Hillcrest Drive and North Annie Glidden Road.

Co-owner Arturo Carlos said Thursday that the business is set to open Saturday at 930 Pappas Drive, with hours from 10:30 a.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays and 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays.

Crews have been at the site this week working to put the finishing touches on the inside of the sports pub.

The pizza franchise will occupy the space that was home to Rosy’s Roadhouse from 2013 to 2015. Before Rosy’s, the bar was operated under different owners as Starbusters Bar & Grill.

Another local Rosati’s franchise is at 630 Plaza Drive in Sycamore. The new DeKalb location will be one of nearly 80 Rosati’s in Illinois and more than 200 nationwide, according to Rosati’s website.

The DeKalb City Council approved Arturo Carlos said they wanted to

a liquor license for the business in April under conditions that the owners complied with certain measures, including completion of all required build-out plans and obtaining police and fire department approval on signage, access and safety issues.

The Carloses’ new restaurant will offer customers a full-service bar along with carry-out, dine-in and delivery options.

Plans for the Rosati’s layout were proposed as a “sports-bar pizzeria” with TVs and table configurations similar to a Buffalo Wild Wings, according to city documents.

The first Rosati’s opened in 1964 in a Chicago suburb. Today the menu consists of various types of pizza including Chicago-style deep dish as well as wings, pastas, salads, sandwiches and more.

The award is meant to recognize individuals, businesses and organizations in the community that go above and beyond in their support of or contribution to the Sycamore Park District.

Doty, of Doty and Sons Concrete Products in Sycamore, has been a longtime supporter of the district and became “an integral part of the team” through the planning and development of Action 2020 projects and the Leaf a Lega-

Products is a family-run business that was started in 1948.

Today, the business manufactures a variety of concrete

products such as planters and benches and works with architects and designers to provide custom items, according to its website.

Doty said he is a lifelong resident of Sycamore who likes to give back to the community as much as he can. He said the new community center proposed in Action 2020 will be a great asset for the city. A 22,400-square-foot community center is proposed for construction among other new features along Airport Road.

“We have a business right across the street from the park,” he said. “[Parks] are a large part of being part of the community.”

Doty is a member of the Action 2020 Professional Services and Community Center Advisory committees, for which he researched comparable facili-

ties, reviewed bid documents and attended meetings. He was previously a member of the communitywide strategic planning team for the district.

He also secured a $100,000 donation for Leaf a Legacy and pledged that Doty and Sons would contribute concrete features for the new recreation campus. Donations to Leaf a Legacy can be given through the park district’s website at www.sycamoreparkdistrict. com/leafalegacy.

Past donations from Doty’s business and family to the district have included planters, benches, bean bag toss boards and an outdoor ping pong table.

Doty will serve on the Professional Services Committee in 2017 that will select a firm to oversee the golf course irrigation system replacement, according to the release.

KENNETH HENRY KOSTUCHOWSKI Kenneth Henry Kostuchowski of Huntley, Illinois, died on Tuesday, January 31. He was 75 years young.

Ken was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1942 the son of the late Henry and Elsie Kostuchowski.

He was a Navy veteran. He worked repairing heavy machinery. Ken was a loving family man.

Kenneth is survived by Darlene Raff, his wife; his two sons, Kevin and Keith; his daughter, Kathy; his sister, Barbara; and his two granddaughters, Kirstin Amburg and Jen Rowe Pasdo.

A private memorial service will be held by immediate family.

Born: January 24, 1951 Died: January 31, 2017 Keith Nickels, age 66, of Maple Park, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2017 following complications from a recent stroke.

He was born January 24, 1951, in Aurora, IL, the son of Keller and Leota (Widmayer) Nickels.

He is survived by his two children, Kelly Nickels and Matt Nickels; a granddaughter, Hailey Nickels; one brother, Gary (Margie) Nickels; and one niece, Lora Nickels.

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man with a history of violence and a YouTube page that includes a street-fighting highlight reel faces new charges for another attack, video of which he posted online.

Cory J. Martel, 20, of the 300 block of West Roosevelt Street, DeKalb, faces aggravated battery and battery charges in connection with a Dec. 13 fight inside an apartment. Prosecutors told Judge Philip Montgomery that Martel was charged with aggravated battery, a more serious crime, because he posted a video of the altercation online.

If convicted of aggravated battery, Martel could face up to 10 years in prison although the Class 3 felony is typi-

cally punishable by two to five years, Montgomery said.

Video of the incident shows Martel approach a man who apparently is sleeping on a couch. Martel forcefully denies he’s a snitch, makes an assortment of threats and then slaps the man in the face with an open hand. A brief Cory J. struggle follows before Martel the man tells Martel to get out of his apartment.

Two videos showing the incident had been viewed 64 times as of Thursday morning, several of those likely came from police and prosecutors.

Several other videos posted under the name Cory Martel, show Martel in other fights, including one at a playground.

Martel, who is unemployed, told the judge he was living with a parent and couldn’t afford to post bond or hire an attorney. The judge appointed the DeKalb County Public Defender’s Office to represent Martel.

DeKalb police seeking information on break-ins

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Police are attempting to identify a man suspected in two breakins Jan. 14 in the 200 block of Deerpath Lane in DeKalb.

In one of the incidents, the suspect entered an unlocked apartment at about 5:15 a.m. and stole a cellphone belonging to the tenant’s friend, who was sleeping on a couch at the time.

The burglar then came back to the apartment a short time later. However, the victim, pretending to be asleep, heard him walk into the apartment and confronted him.

This resulted in the suspect returning the cellphone and leaving.

The man was in his late 30s or 40s and wearing a trenchcoat-style jacket, stocking cap and scarf.

CHICAGO – Two Illinois lawmakers have introduced legislation to ensure that state employees continue receiving paychecks even if a judge agrees with the state attorney general’s argument that their pay should be halted during the budget impasse.

Republican Rep. Avery Bourne of Raymond and Democratic Rep. Sue Scherer of Decatur introduced separate measures Wednesday that would keep paychecks flowing in response to a motion filed by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan last week. Madigan asked a judge to reverse a previous court’s ruling that found withholding paychecks violates a provision in the Illinois Constitution requiring all contractual agreements to be honored.

Madigan argued that the court ruling had contributed to prolonging the nearly two-year impasse.

Bourne said her measure is necessary to keep state workers out of the fray as the budget negotiations grind on between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic legislative leaders.

Illinois sees mild January, temps 5 degrees above normal

CHAMPAIGN – Illinois state climate experts said the temperature during January was 5 degrees above normal and the state recorded its 14th-warmest January on record.

Jim Angel is the Illinois state climatologist with the University of Illinois’ State Water Survey. Angel said the statewide average temperature during January was 31.4 degrees. The water survey said above-normal temperatures during January spanned the entire state of Illinois and snowfall during the month almost was nonexistent.

Less than an inch of snow fell in many locations, which the water survey said was “well below normal statewide.”

NEW DOUGLAS – Authorities have charged an Illinois couple with involuntary manslaughter after their infant son was found lifeless in their crowded, trash-filled home.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported that authorities believe the 2-month-old suffocated Tuesday after being trapped under a car seat.

Amy and Timothy Elkins Jr. each face one charge of involuntary manslaughter, one charge of felony child endangerment and nine counts of misdemeanor child endangerment. It was not immediately clear if they are represented by an attorney who could speak on their behalf.

Madison County Sheriff John Lakin said the family lived in “absolutely horrific” conditions that appalled seasoned officers.

Cook Co. to put more than 4K vacant properties up for sale

CHICAGO – More than 4,000 vacant Cook County properties are being put up for sale as part of an effort to improve distressed communities.

The Cook County Land Bank Authority said the 4,437 tax-delinquent parcels represent the largest one-time release of real estate in county history.

The properties are located in areas of Chicago and suburban Cook County that were hard hit by the foreclosure crisis or the decline in manufacturing. Many have been vacant for five to 10 years, creating blight in neighborhoods.

Community-based developers, homeowners, block clubs and nonprofit organizations might buy the parcels and transform them into community gardens, play lots or basketball courts.

Cook County formed the land bank in 2013. Commissioner Bridget Gainer said this week’s action will contribute to “a rust belt reboot.”

Philadelphia group helping investigate Illinois cold case

TINLEY PARK – Nine years after the fatal shooting of five women in a southwest suburb of Chicago, police are getting help from a Philadelphia-based group that aids law enforcement working to solve cold-case homicides.

In October, two Tinley Park detectives presented evidence in the Feb. 2, 2008, incident to members of the Vidocq Society, a nonprofit comprised of criminal and forensic investigators. Village officials said in a statement Monday that the group’s members reviewed the case.

“It’s a fresh set of eyes on a very daunting and complicated case,” Tinley Park Police Chief Steve Neubauer said.

He said the society doesn’t agree to hear every case that is presented for consideration, and that the department had to request to be placed on the group’s docket.

Police have investigated more than 7,000 tips in the case, and a reward of $100,000 has yet to produce a lead that will bring resolution to the slayings, which occurred at a Lane Bryant clothing store.

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump’s spats with U.S. allies as close as Mexico and as unlikely as Australia are leaving his new secretary of state and others in his Cabinet to clean up a lot of potential damage.

It’s a good-cop, bad-cop dynamic that could define America’s foreign policy for the next four years.

President Trump’s first two weeks on the job have rattled foreign friends and foes alike – and even members of his own party – starting with his order to temporarily halt all refugee admissions as well as immigration from seven mainly-Muslim countries. Concern only escalated the past few days with his personal dust-ups with foreign leaders and declaration that Iran is now “on notice” for possible American action.

“It’s time we’re going to be a little tough, folks,” Trump said at a National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, as unseemly details circulated about his private phone calls with the Mexican and Australian leaders.

“We’re taken advantage of by every nation in the world virtually. It’s not going to happen anymore.”

In a follow-up phone call, Trump warned Pena Nieto that he was ready to send U.S. troops to stop “bad hombres down there” if Mexico’s military can’t control them, The Associated Press learned. The White House said the comments were made in a “lighthearted” manner. But administration officials described the calls with both leaders as contentious. Some top aides are underscoring Trump’s emphasis on toughness and brawnier U.S. negotiations, dominant themes of his “America First” foreign policy.

At the United Nations, Trump’s U.N. ambassador, Nikki Haley, said the U.S. would be “taking names” of countries that “don’t have our back.” His national security adviser, Michael Flynn, made a surprising appearance at the White House daily briefing to “officially” put Iran “on notice” after its ballistic missile test. Trump topped Flynn on Thursday by saying “nothing is off the table” when it comes to a potential American response. But Trump’s top diplomats are striking noticeably softer tones.

The former Exxon Mobil CEO offered an olive branch to hundreds of diplomats who signed a “dissent cable” challenging Trump’s order on immigration and refugees, affirming that “each of us is entitled to the expression of our political beliefs.” While noting the nation’s “hotly contested” election campaign, Tillerson stressed that “we cannot let out personal convictions overwhelm our ability to work as one team.”

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis sought to project the same sentiment internationally in South Korea on Thursday, in his first official trip abroad. He said the president’s message was “about the priority that we place on this alliance between our two nations,” seeking to reassure an ally that was unnerved by Trump the candidate when he said it should take on greater self-defense responsibility.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. military said Thursday it is investigating last weekend’s raid by U.S. special operations forces in Yemen and that innocent civilians, including children, were apparently killed.

U.S. Central Command said civilians may have been hit by gunfire from aircraft called in to assist U.S. troops, who were engaged in a ferocious firefight with militants from al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, the group’s Yemen affiliate.

The military said the civilians may not have been visible to the U.S. forces because they were mixed in with combatants in the compound who were firing at U.S. troops “from all sides to include houses and other buildings.”

The Pentagon disputed published reports that the operation was compromised and that U.S. troops lost the element of surprise in the assault on the compound.

“We have no information to suggest that this was compromised,” said Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, saying the accounts do not “match with reality.”

He said the U.S. special operations forces conducted the raid to get valuable

The grandfather said Anwaar was visiting her mother when the raid took place, and was shot in the neck and bled to death. The Pentagon hasn’t confirmed the young al-Awlaki was killed in Sunday’s raid.

“Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula has a horrifying history of hiding women and children within militant operating areas and terrorist camps, and continuously shows a callous disregard for innocent lives,” said Col. John J. Thomas, U.S. Central Command spokesman.

Navy SEAL William “Ryan” Owens was killed in the assault, and three other U.S. service members were wounded.

Another three U.S. forces were wounded in the “hard landing” of an MV-22 Osprey aircraft at a staging area for the mission.

According to Central Command, the firefight included small arms fire, hand grenades and close air support fire.

Davis said earlier this week that an unspecified number of women were part of the group of combatants battling the U.S. forces, and some were among the 14 killed in the firefight.

Planning for the clandestine counterterrorism raid began before President Barack Obama left office Jan. 20, but President Donald Trump authorized the raid.

Questions for Judge Gorsuch President Donald Trump’s nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court elicited an immediate, furious and depressingly predictable reaction. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., called him an ideologue in a tweet sent shortly after Trump made his announcement, and liberal senators such as Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., announced they would oppose the nomination not long after that. Conservative activist groups, meanwhile, vowed to go on an electionyear-style campaign to advance Gorsuch’s nomination.

The politicization of the judiciary, in other words, continues apace.

We do not blame Democrats for feeling sore about how the GOP Senate last year froze out Judge Merrick Garland, President Barack Obama’s nominee for the seat Gorsuch would take. Yet many Republicans at least based their opposition on a procedural argument – that the president should not fill Supreme Court seats that come vacant during election years – and refrained from tarring Garland personally. If Democrats want to retaliate against Republicans for their cynical power play, they should be upfront about that motivation. If they end up voting against Gorsuch because they think he would rule one way or another on a hot-button issue, such as overturning Roe v. Wade, they should be clear about that, too.

But trashing Gorsuch as an outlandish radical, despite his impeccable credentials, the wide respect he commands in his field, his long service as an appeals court judge and the unanimous voice vote he received the last time the Senate considered him for the federal bench, is at the very least premature.

The question, then, is what Gorsuch should be asked about during his confirmation hearings. As with many other Supreme Court nominees before him, the judge will no doubt be loath to discuss specific cases and take stands on issues the court is likely to hear, a defensible position that promotes judicial independence and the appearance of impartiality. Senators should nevertheless demand that Gorsuch describe his views on when it is appropriate to overturn standing court precedent.

Senators should probe Gorsuch’s “originalist” legal philosophy, asking him what happens when history and legal text do not offer clear guidance.

They should ask Gorsuch about handling cases in which general laws conflict with individuals’ religious practices, given his previous rulings on Obamacare’s contraception mandate. They should insist he explain when courts should defer to the executive branch in interpreting the law. He appears to have views that, if acted upon, would significantly expand court power to quash executive actions.

Senators should also ask Gorsuch about his selection process. Did he make any private commitments to Trump or his staff? Was he asked to?

The process of filling Antonin Scalia’s Supreme Court seat has already been unreasonable enough. Making it more so would hurt all sides in the long run.

Trump can’t let ‘America First’ mean America alone

On his first official foreign trip, Secretary of Defense James Mattis is going to the continent that presents the White House with one of its most immediate and one of its most long-term challenges. North Korea is racing to develop a working nuclear-tipped ICBM, while China is growing as a regional hegemon and global rival.

Both issues will require close cooperation with the U.S.’s longstanding allies in Japan and South Korea, where Mattis will be visiting. President Donald Trump’s main response, however, has been to vaguely threaten China and promise to invest additional billions to expand the U.S. military. Neither is an adequate response.

No matter how much Trump tweets, China isn’t going to press sanctions that might fatally undermine the regime in Pyongyang and

result in a unified, U.S.-allied Korea on its doorstep. Nor are Chinese leaders going to cave in to trade threats or negotiate over Taiwan. Meanwhile, it’ll take years to build all the new submarines and battleships Trump is promising. And in any case, while U.S. allies favor a stout American presence in the region, they have no appetite for military action.

The most effective way to strengthen the U.S. position in Asia is by doing exactly what Mattis is doing: cultivating and reassuring allies. It’s encouraging that he reportedly doesn’t plan to question the contributions that South Korea and Japan make to support U.S. troops in their countries, as Trump has done repeatedly.

Collaboration among all three allies is key: Any effort to contain North Korea will be much more effective if they can coordinate their missile-defense

networks and present a unified front to Pyongyang.

Mattis’s trip should be only the first of many. It will be critical for diplomats, Cabinet members and Trump himself to reassure Asian allies and rally them to a coherent policy. The U.S. will need to work harder to encourage greater military cooperation in the region. And Trump can (somewhat) mitigate his ill-considered decision to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership by pressing bilateral trade deals, in particular with Japan.

Trump claims to have the same priorities abroad as he does at home: to make the U.S. stronger and safer. But he won’t succeed – especially not in Asia – if “America First” means, as it once did, America alone.

VIEWS Connie Schultz are worried. They are scared. Women, in particular, voice concern about the children in their lives, for the most obvious of reasons.

Trump has been behaving, in word and deed, in ways that most of us raise our children to understand are unacceptable.

We do not lie.

We do not bully.

We do not hate.

When I wrote about this concern during the presidential campaign, some readers insisted that if we’re worried about the tender souls of our children and grandchildren, the solution is obvious: Don’t let them watch TV. It’s not that easy to protect children from the world around us. The grownups talk. Tabloids fill stands at checkout counters. TVs blast cable news in waiting rooms and airports across the country.

I wrote a few months ago about walking through the Miami airport with my 8-year-old grandson. I lost

sight of him just long enough – seconds, not minutes – for him to stop in front of a TV screen broadcasting a series of Trump’s most egregious moments, including his racist comments about Mexicans.

My grandson lives in a U.S. territory. His life is full of children who do not look like him but are his closest friends. He stared at the screen, his eyes narrowing as he watched. I coaxed him away, but we spent the next hour surrounded by people who did not look like us as we waited for his flight and talked through his questions.

Why, he wanted to know, would that man run for president? Why would he say such awful things about people he doesn’t even know?

At one point, I told him, “This is why it’s so important that this man not become our president.”

Oh well.

Twenty-six hours ago, I answered that woman’s question as best I could.

We must assure the children of our country that there’s no such thing as one kind of American – and we have the photos to prove it.

Show them pictures of the millions of women and the men who love them who marched in Washington and in cities around the country the day after

the inauguration. Show them images of the diverse group of Americans protesting at airports across the U.S. last weekend in support of immigrants and refugees.

Even as I spoke, I could see the woman’s kind face clouding. I needed no explanation for her response. Her expression said it all: How can this be?

How can this, all of it – the lies, the bullying, the targeting of innocent people – be happening in the United States of America?

How do we explain this to our children?

Well, we tell them what we’ve always told them.

We do not lie.

We do not bully.

We do not hate.

Because we are Americans, and this is our country to save.

Un-American? Yes. Illegal? Not so fast

The Washington Post No, President Trump’s order curtailing entry to the United States from seven Muslim-majority countries is not the “total and complete shutdown” he threatened in December 2015, but it’s bad enough.

Even after the dust settles from its spectacularly mishandled early days, even after the administration patches up its worst flaws – such as the exclusion of green card holders and those who aided U.S. troops in the Middle East – the measure recasts the United States as a country so fearful of an admittedly serious terrorist threat that it would retreat from its most generous traditions.

In a world where millions seek haven from war and repression, Trump’s order suspends refugee admissions for 120 days, even for those already thoroughly vetted and approved, and slashes them thereafter from the previous target of 110,000 in fiscal 2017 to 50,000.

Whether this bad policy is unconsti-

tutional, or even illegal, however, is a different issue – and not an easy one.

The basic problem facing the various states and private plaintiffs now flocking to federal court is that the president enjoys extremely wide authority over immigration matters.

Under the 1980 Refugee Act, the president decides how many refugees the United States will resettle on U.S. soil each year, which is why President Barack Obama could crank the target up from 85,000 in fiscal 2016 to 110,000 in fiscal 2017.

Trump’s order invokes an even broader statutory provision that allows the president to restrict or suspend the entry of “any aliens or . . . any class of aliens” whose admission he deems “detrimental to the interests of the United States,” for pretty much as long as he thinks is necessary.

Historically, courts have been deferential toward presidents’ exercise of this authority, both because Congress’ delegation is so clear and because of the judicial branch’s traditional, and usually well-founded, reluctance to

weigh in on matters affecting foreign affairs and national security.

The still-forming constitutional case against Trump’s order does not, therefore, deny his broad power. The argument would be that he has abused it – exercised it in violation of the religious freedom clause of the First Amendment – by imposing criteria that disfavor Muslims and favor Christians, without showing any actual connection to a policy goal, or making any attempt to achieve that goal through less restrictive alternatives.

“It can’t be an across-the-board blunderbuss,” said David Cole, national legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union.

This amounts to a demand that courts flunk Trump’s order under the doctrine of “strict scrutiny” that applies to potentially discriminatory measures in the domestic arena.

However, the fact that the order is only temporary, and could result in nothing more than tweaked procedures, could mitigate that; what’s more, the actual text makes no refer-

ence to Muslims per se.

Trump has made it plain in various comments that he intends to help Christians toward whom, he alleges, the previous administration was indifferent.

But, again, the order’s text instructs the bureaucracy to “prioritize” – whatever that means – future refugee claims from “minority” religions, implying Middle Eastern Christians without saying so expressly. That leaves the door open to Yazidis, Bahais and even Shiite Muslims from majority-Sunni countries.

No doubt even that reading entangles the executive branch in the questionable business of defining “majority” and “minority” religious denominations, and choosing among them. However, courts might well worry that once they start supervising those decisions, they’ll never be able to stop.

Twenty-six hours has passed since I led a discussion with about 100 women of the Sisterhood at B’nai Jeshurun Congregation on the east side of Cleveland.

Twenty-six hours later and I am still thinking about the question from a woman whose 10-year-old nephew wanted to know whether his friends could be deported.

He is Jewish, and one of his friends is black. He apparently worries that too many will see him as “the other” – which is true only if one thinks an American must not only be born here but also be white and so-called Christian. I qualify that claim to Christianity because I am bone-weary of people who profess to share my faith but wield God and their Bibles as weapons of mass destruction. Their intolerance bears no resemblance to the God I know.

This is not the first time I’ve been asked in recent weeks by a stranger what we should tell our children in the wake of President Donald Trump’s election.

My habit, when I meet someone for the first time, is to shake hands and say, “Tell me about yourself.” In the past, people usually told me what they do. In recent weeks, they are more likely to tell me how they feel. They

Lions host Genoa-Kingston Spelling Bee DAILY CHRONICLE The Genoa Lions invited the 12 finalists in the district spelling bee to dinner Jan. 18 at the Masonic Temple in Genoa.

Three students in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades were successful in their class spelling bees and were ready to spell their way to the regionals at Kishwaukee College in March.

The winner of this year’s Genoa-Kingston Spelling Bee was Naomi Dutton, an eighth-grader at Genoa Middle School and the daughter of Nathan and Hadassah Dutton of Genoa.

The second-place winner was Bryanna Sonntag, daughter of Garret and Tammy Sonntag of Genoa.

She is a seventh-grader at Genoa-Kingston Middle School.

Dutton and Sonntag spelled for more than 60 rounds to determine the winner. Their nearest competitors were eliminated before the 20th round.

The third-place winner was seventh-grader Sean Abracia-Wendel and fourth place was secured by fifth-grader Steffini McDowel.

Dinner was hosted by Lions President Dale Pelley and the Genoa Lions Club, which provided trophies for the first- and second-place winners.

Genoa’s McDonald’s donated a $10 Arch Card for each contestant.

Principal Angelo Lekkas of G-K Middle School was ill this year, and Assistant Principal Craig Butcher stepped in as moderator. G-K Superintendent Joe Burgess gave a short speech, and Butcher handled the rest of the evening.

hen Northern Illinois women’s basketball coach Lisa Carlsen was a player from 1988-92, her college had two different names for the basketball teams.

The Northwest Missouri State men’s team was nicknamed the Bearcats.

The women’s team was nicknamed the Bearkittens.

“At the time, I didn’t (care). I absolutely would now,” Carlsen said.

“I absolutely would think it’s the dumbest thing I ever heard now, but at the time, I didn’t.”

Although the name since has been changed – the Northwest Missouri State women’s teams now are nicknamed the Bearcats – there remains a debate about whether it’s wrong for schools to have two different mascots

for its teams.

Most notably, should the girls teams have “Lady” as a prefix to their nicknames?

Carlsen said the prefix gained steam with the rise of the University of Tennessee women’s basketball team proudly going as the Lady Vols – short for Volunteers – under legendary coach Pat Summitt.

There are Illinois high schools that have two drastically different gender-based nicknames – the Dixon Dukes and the Dixon Duchesses, for example, played at Genoa-Kingston on Saturday – and some teams in the area that unofficially take on the prefix of Lady for its girls teams.

The Sycamore girls soccer team, which finished third in the Class 2A state tournament last season, occasionally would go by the Lady Spartans on social media.

Although many of the high school athletes said the prefix doesn’t bother them or they don’t really think about it, there are athletes who feel like the different nicknames belittle what the female athletes are trying to accomplish.

“Some people refer to us as the Lady Spartans, but we will never refer to us as that,” said Sycamore senior Taryn Mathey, who plays for the girls soccer and basketball teams. “It’s a little weird. Girls sports being referred to as the Lady Spartans, I don’t know. I feel like it should be the Boy Spartans. I feel like if the boys are the Spartans and the girls are the Lady Spartans, I feel like it shines the light on – these are the Spartans and these are the Lady Spartans.

“I can see how it’s a little condescending. I don’t think of it much,” she said. “When we go to other teams and the announcers are like, ‘These are the Lady Barbs,’ you’re just like, ‘They’re just the Barbs. We’re just the Spartans.’

We’re just as capable as the boys are.”

Sycamore repeats as champion Kolberg, Carlson and Meyer finish 2-3-4 for Spartans

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Having not lost a conference match in two years, Sycamore girls bowling coach Andy Hampton said he knew his team made a tempting target heading into Thursday’s Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference tournament at Four Season Lanes.

But the Spartans finished with three of the top four bowlers on the day and defeated Morris by 399 pins to claim their second straight conference championship.

Sycamore finished with 6,763 to Morris’ 6,364. DeKalb was third with 5,986, and Kaneland 10th with 4,647.

“We knew we were going to come in with the targets square on our backs,” Hampton said. “I was worried how we would respond, and today they didn’t leave anything in the tank. It was an excellent job. It’s hard to go six in a row, no break, no lunch, no nothing.”

Morris’ Amy Waldron was the individual champ with a 1,247, but the Spartans had the next three finishers in Megan Kolberg (1,242), Heather Carlson (1,215) and Megan Meyer (1,176). DeKalb’s Kaylee McFarland led after the morning session, but finished sixth with a 1,133, and teammate Reagan Harold was ninth with a 1,087.

Kolberg trailed Waldron by one pin heading into the final game, but couldn’t capitalize on Waldron’s 164 in the final game. The Sycamore freshman said she knew everyone would be aiming for the defending champs coming into the day.

“I think we kind of just brushed it off and didn’t let it bother us,” Kolberg said. “We

know that we have some pretty good teams in our conference. We just kind of bowled the way we know we can.”

The Spartans will head to Plum Hollow in Dixon on Saturday for the Oregon Regional.

Kolberg said she’s excited for her first postseason.

“The nerves are really kicking in,” Kolberg said. “The team really helps me stay calm and just bowl the game I know how.”

McFarland started the day with a 661, bowling at least 199 in each of the three games. But in the second half, her high game was a 178.

“I wasn’t expecting to do as well as I did,” McFarland said. “We bowled here yesterday and I bowled a 146 and a 169, and I wasn’t expecting to bowl well today at all. Then my second game I bowled a 238, and it was like, ‘Wow!’ ” McFarland said the lanes took some adjusting to, and Harold agreed.

“I expected the lanes to be really bad, and they were. But I fought through it the best I could,” Harold said. “It was mostly just the lanes, but I need to work on my mental game, staying positive.”

By the numbers: Alexis Kolberg finished 11th with a 1,078 to round out the area medalists. Taylor Mershon finished three pins out of a medal spot with a 1,017, while teammate Taylor Dunaway rolled a 1,014. Grace Lindgren led Kaneland with a 852.

Beyond the stats: The NI Big 12 also announced its all-conference team, given to the 15 best bowlers of the season. Megan Kolberg was third, Harold fifth, Carlson sixth, Meyer seventh, McFarland eighth, Alexis Kolberg 10th and Mershon finished in a tie for 14th.

They said it: “We know the competition we’re going to see on Saturday, and we feel pretty good about the way we’re throwing the ball,” Hampton said as the Spartans have a quick turnaround before the regional.

Up next: Kaneland, DeKalb and Sycamore all will be at the regional, which starts at 9 a.m.

The Timberwolves beat Serena, 59-52, Thursday at Somonauk in a Little Ten Conference tournament semifinal, earning a rematch with the Norsemen at 8 p.m. Friday.

If they were to move Gibson, that would mean Bobby Portis would have to be ready for increased minutes, unless they brought a power forward with a higher upside back in the deal. Portis isn’t ready, and few NBA teams are looking to move young, talented power forwards.

That’s another reason Gibson is all for his front office staying pat.

“You can’t make any moves right now,” Gibson said. “We just got to start focusing on what we have on the court.

You can’t sit around and wait for the team to bring in someone to save you. We got more than enough to win right now.

“We do well against the good teams in this league, and now we still have to figure out how to play better against the teams that are bottom level. Just do our jobs. That other stuff is management’s job, not my job.”

The way Gibson sees it, one good week in the East and the Bulls could challenge for home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

“People think that all the stuff going on with us, that we have problems?”

Gibson said with a laugh. “I mean look around the East. There’s a lot of teams with growing pains, a lot of secret meetings going on all over. I bet you that. We’re not the only ones.”

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist, Duncan Keith added two assists and the Blackhawks defeated the Arizona Coyotes, 4-3, Thursday night to stop a three-game slide.

The Hawks led twice by three goals, but gave up three in the second period and had to hold on. Ryan Patrick Kane Hartman, Marian Hossa and Artemi Panarin also scored for the Hawks.

Christian Dvorak and Brendan Perlini each had a goal and an assist for the Coyotes. Oliver Ekman-Larsson also scored for Arizona.

The Hawks scored twice in 72 seconds during the first period, their first goal coming 15 seconds into a power play. Kane’s left-handed shot pinged off the crossbar and down into the cage at 8:44 of the period.

Hartman made it 2-0 at the 9:56 mark, his long shot zipping through several players in front of the net and

past Arizona goalie Mike Smith.

Smith finished with 22 saves, but several kept the Coyotes in the game.

Corey Crawford had 24 for the Hawks.

The Hawks, who entered with one goal on their past 20 power plays, scored on the man advantage again at 14:15. Hossa, stopped by Smith on a breakaway early in the game, zoomed past defender Alex Goligoski and fired in on the move for a 3-0 lead.

Hossa’s 19 goals lead the Hawks this season.

Many in the sellout crowd of 17,125 wore Hawks jerseys. Coyotes fans finally got their chance to cheer when defenseman Luke Schenn and the Hawks’ Andrew Desjardins threw punches late in the period.

Schenn got the better of the fight, leaving Desjardins bloodied, but took the worst of the punishment as far as penalty minutes. Schenn was handed seven minutes for fighting and instigating, and a 10-minute misconduct.

Two quick penalties nine seconds apart to start the second period gave the Coyotes a 5-on-3 power play, and Ekman-Larsson scored off a pass from Radim Vrbata to cut the Hawks’ lead to 3-1.

HOUSTON – Taj Gibson has grown immune to all of it.

At this point, it barely is even noise for the Bulls big man.

Let’s see, just in the past few weeks Gibson has been rumored to be heading to Minnesota, Toronto, Houston and Philadelphia.

If there’s a trade rumor concerning the Bulls, it usually has Gibson’s name in it.

“The rumor mill, I think, is a bunch of people that aren’t real writers, basically,” Gibson said. “The guys that don’t have the real credentials, but just want to pretend they are real media, so there’s always going to be rumors as long as some guy out there wants to just jot some stuff down and hit send.”

Now, Gibson isn’t naïve.

He knows that being a part of a team that is 25-25, as well as a front office that still doesn’t seem to have a concrete plan moving forward, he is a likely trade candidate. Throw in the fact he’s 31 years old and set to become a free agent this offseason, and it makes sense for the Bulls to move him if they feel like they can get younger, but still stay in the Eastern Conference playoff hunt.

What Gibson won’t do anymore, however, is dwell on it.

“This is part of the job,” Gibson said.

“I’ve been traded so many times. My whole thing is, at least there’s teams that want you. It’s different when no one wants you. But you never know.

I’m always loyal to the Bulls, first and foremost.”

Will that feeling stay mutual?

The trade deadline is Feb. 23, and while the Bulls entered Thursday holding down the No. 7 spot in the East, getting a first-round playoff series and possibly a first-round exit, shouldn’t be the goal.

Both vice president of basketball operations John Paxson and general manager Gar Forman have insisted that the roster needs to get younger and more athletic, but the lack of consistent depth behind Gibson also could hurt the Bulls short-term if they make a move.

That shouldn’t be a big deal for most teams, but the marketing-first Bulls seem fixated on playoff appearances, especially when the front office has dried up the excuses department.

Garcia leads Dubai Desert Classic by 1, Woods 12 shots back

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Sergio Garcia took advantage of better playing conditions in the morning and carded a 7-under-par 65 for a one-shot lead to open the Dubai Desert Classic on Thursday.

Playing ahead of Tiger Woods, who could not make any headway and posted a 5-over 77, Garcia made six birdies and an eagle before finally dropping a shot on the eighth hole, his 17th.

Chile’s Felipe Aguilar and South Africa’s George Coetzee were tied at 66, and the resurgent Ian Poulter led a group of four players with 67.

Henrik Stenson, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 4, posted a bogey-free 68.

Kuchar shoots 7-under 64 to take Phoenix Open lead

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Matt Kuchar hardly looked like a guy coming off a seven-week break Thursday in the first round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Kuchar eagled the par-5 13th and added two late birdies and a big par save on the rowdy par-3 16th hole in an opening 7-under-par 64 at TPC Scottsdale.

Playing in perfect afternoon conditions in front of a crowd estimated at 103,420, Kuchar took a one-stroke lead over defending champion Hideki Matsuyama and Brendan Steele.

“Someone told me it was 5 million,” Kuchar joked about the crowd. “So many people out here. It’s a good buzz. It’s a good vibe.”

Former WNBA MVP Delle Donne traded from Sky to Mystics

Elena Delle Donne is headed to Washington in one of the biggest trades in the WNBA’s history.

The 2015 MVP is joining the Mystics after being traded from the Sky on Thursday for Stefanie Dolson, Kahleah Copper and the No. 2 pick in this year’s draft.

The move gets her closer to her Delaware home.

Suspect in McKnight slaying indicted on tougher charge

GRETNA, La. – The Louisiana man accused of killing former NFL running back Joe McKnight during a road rage dispute was indicted Thursday on a charge that carries a mandatory life sentence – a stiffer charge than the one he originally faced.

As a result of the second-degree murder indictment, Judge June Darensburg increased Ronald Gasser’s bond from $500,000 to $750,000, Jefferson Parish District Attorney Paul Connick Jr. said in the news release.

The 55-year-old Terrytown man’s attorneys, Gerry Archer and Matthew Goetz, did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment.

HOUSTON – Jimmy Garoppolo feels the tug of home.

It usually is vocalized by his childhood friends from Arlington Heights, not satisfied with his status as the Patriots’ backup quarterback.

They ask him about starting for the Bears.

“All the time,” he said.

He usually will fire a joke back in their direction. It’s a question he’s used to answering – and has been asked this week, in between doing his best Matt Ryan impression during practice.

“It’s kinda one those things,” he said this week. “During the season I’m not really responding to them. Right now, it’s all Atlanta. We’ll see how it goes on Monday.”

The Patriots have reached their second Super Bowl in his three seasons, but he wants to lead one onto the field as the starter.

“That’s been the dream since you were a little kid growing up,” said the Eastern Illinois and Rolling Meadows High School alum. “You want to be the guy in the game, playing, and in the Super Bowl. It’s what you live for, really.”

Mentor Tom Brady is 39 but said Monday night that he didn’t see “any end in sight” to his career. Garoppolo is entering the final year of his contract, so this offseason is the Patriots’ last chance to move him. Their asking price figures to be substantial, based on the fact the Eagles were able to land the Vikings’ 2017 first-round pick and 2018 fourth-rounder for Sam Bradford.

Garoppolo, however, has started only two career games – while Brady

“We’re looking for the next franchise quarterback or pro bowl quarterback. If there’s an inkling of thought that he might be that guy, and he’s young, and we can get him – I hate to use the word ‘overpay,’ but that’s what you have to do.”

“I think the evolution of time, that whole Lady thing just goes away,” she said. “I like when people get away from that because I don’t think our kids really like to be the Lady Huskies or whatever. I think that’s just an evolution of women’s athletics, in general, whether it’s the high school level or the college level.”

For Genoa-Kingston sports, the official name of the teams is Cogs, but the school’s unofficial nickname for girls sports – including game programs for girls basketball and in news releases and social media – refers to them as the Lady Cogs.

According to G-K athletic director Phil Jerbi, adding the prefix is simply a matter of clarity for the reader and he hadn’t thought of the issue until

being asked about it by the Daily Chronicle.

“Some schools, ‘Lady’ is the official part of the school name,” Jerbi said.

“Technically, the reason why I use ‘Lady Cogs’ a lot when I’m on Twitter or Facebook is simply so people know that it’s boys or girls when they’re reading the post. A lot of the time I’ll put ‘varsity girls’ or ‘sophomore girls’ or ‘varsity boys,’ but officially, our name is the Cogs.

“We are the Cogs for the boys; we are the Cogs for girls. It’s kind of become a nickname, really, more than anything else. It’s a way to decipher between the two teams.”

Multiple ADs, including Jerbi, have said they do not order items that use the prefix on school-related merchandise, and most of the players said their

teams will only occasionally refer to themselves with the prefix.

When Carlsen was a high school athlete as Harlan High School in Iowa in the 1980s, the teams had two different nicknames. The boys were the Cyclones, and the girls were the Cyclonettes.

Now, with the passing of time, both teams are simply the Cyclones.

“As women, we’ve always fought for all kinds of equality, so that’s one more thing that’s different. Why?” she asked.

“It doesn’t need to be different, so why make it different? Some people have a lot stronger opinion on it than I do. I didn’t ever have a huge, strong opinion because I didn’t think it was that big of a deal, but it is one more thing that is different when it doesn’t have to be.

I’m in favor of getting rid of it.”

was serving his “Deflategate” suspension to begin the season. But Garoppolo sprained the AC joint in his right shoulder with about four minutes left in the first half of Game 2.

His starter tape, then, is limited to five healthy quarters. And whichever team trades for him would likely sign him to a new deal before he plays a snap.

“Can you imagine? He might get traded and paid for playing just [two games] … it’s amazing,” NFL Network analyst and former Lions coach Steve

roppolo went 16 for 21 for 181 yards and a touchdown.

After one practice session, the quarterback and Bears general manager Ryan Pace, a fellow Eastern Illinois alum, chatted for a few minutes.

Bears coach John Fox needs to win games in his third season, and the 25-year-old wouldn’t have the same growing pains as a rookie would.

Garoppolo’s inexperience isn’t unusual, either. Two of the top three quarterback prospects have relatively few college starts – Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer (23) and North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky (13).

Pace said last week he looks for three things in a quarterback.

“It’s your football intelligence, it’s your accuracy, it’s your ability to quickly process,” he said.

Garoppolo has shown all three – but in a limited audition.

“He’s learned how to be a professional,” said Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, whose brother Ben is a Bears offensive assistant.

“He’s learned how to approach this game. He now understands how difficult it is to be good.

“I think that’s important thing for a young player – to cross that line and figure out, ‘It’s not going to come easy to me any more.’ ” Fifteen of Garoppolo’s family members and friends will attend Sunday’s Super Bowl.

His next could be much closer to home.

Garoppolo sounds ready to be a starter, wherever it may be.

“I don’t want to sound cocky,” he said, “but as a quarterback in the back of your mind you always think you can do it.”

24 Recurrence of breast cancer might be

linked to heavier alcohol consumption

Dear Doctor: I read your recent response to a question about alcohol consumption and its correlation to breast cancer. But what about the risk once you’ve been diagnosed? I recently was diagnosed with breast cancer and have completed radiation. I am on medication and have a very positive prognosis. I enjoy a glass of wine occasionally and am wondering if I should continue doing this. You talked about two units of alcohol every three or four days as being acceptable. What exactly are two units, and would this be OK for someone in my situation?

Dear Reader: For those who missed my previous column, let me repeat: The relationship between alcohol consumption and breast cancer has been studied multiple times, and there does appear to be a link. Studies have shown this link is dose-responsive, meaning the more you drink, the greater the risk of developing breast cancer. The correlation between breast cancer and heavy or binge drinking is the most definite.

In the prior article, I also referred to a positive benefit of alcohol for women, in that research has found having one drink (two units of alcohol) every three to four days was linked to a significant decrease – 17 percent – in death during the course of one study.

As for whether there is an association between alcohol consumption and cancer recurrence or a new cancer after a breast cancer diagnosis, that has been studied as well. A 2016 article in the journal Cancer Treatment Reviews analyzed results from 16 studies to assess breast cancer risk and alcohol consumption in women who previously had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Eleven of the studies looked at recurrence of the original breast cancer, and five studies

Some studies showed no correlation, but the results of the combined studies did show a small connection between alcohol intake and a recurrence of breast cancer. The correlation was found even among those who drank one unit of wine every day – that’s half a standard glass, to answer your question about units of wine. Alcohol also had a greater effect upon women after menopause and women who were obese. However, the five studies that looked at new breast cancers did not show an effect from alcohol.

It is difficult to make an overarching conclusion from this data, but there does appear to be some correlation between alcohol and an increased risk of breast cancer recurrence. However, this correlation was not seen in women who drank alcohol less frequently then one drink every other day.

So in regard to breast cancer, it’s likely safe to have a glass of wine (two units of alcohol) every three days, as this amount doesn’t seem to be linked to an increased risk of new or recurrent breast cancer.

But please make sure to continue your regular follow-ups of evaluations with mammograms.

North’s one no-trump was forcing one round, showing 6-12 points. What did West do now? (In Standard American, North would have responded two clubs.)

West could have bid four (or five!) diamonds, but he chose another option: three hearts. Since West had not intervened over one spade with two hearts or three hearts, he could not have a good hand with a long suit; he had to have hearts and diamonds.

It was possible that four hearts was East-West’s best contract. North scotched that idea by jumping to four spades to show three spades with, initially, game-invitational strength that had been upgraded -- a ninecard fit is much better than eight, and the heart finesse was clearly winning.

After four spades was passed out, how did the defense go?

West led the club 10: four, ace, jack. East started to cash the diamond king (king from ace-king after trick one), but realized that West must have led a singleton. So, just in time, East led the club two, a suit-preference signal for diamonds.

West ruffed, put partner on lead in diamonds and received a second ruff to defeat the contract.
