Reflecting on 1st year at Kish College POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS

As I look back on my first year as president of Kishwaukee College, I am amazed by the challenges, and resulting changes, the college faced in 2016.

We are vastly different in many ways than we were a year ago, but also very much the same college that our communities have relied on for higher education for the past 49 years.

Reflecting on what initially drew me to Kish, it was the sense of family at the college, and there is no doubt that has not changed in the past year.

We might look a bit different, but the passion and commitment demonstrated by faculty and staff every day in service to our students is second to none.

Over the past year, we’ve learned how to work more efficiently with each other in our processes and services.

This became necessary with having fewer resources, but out of the financial challenge has come a positive in working closer together for our students. Change has become the norm at Kishwaukee College, and we have figured out how to stay focused on what matters most to our students and the communities we serve.

One thing that has become very clear is that with fewer resources, partnerships become even more important to our college.

We have worked to strengthen our partnerships with local K-12 school districts and the business community to make sure we are focused on what matters most to those we serve.

By working closer together, we can be more efficient and effective, helping students in our communities be ready for college and a career.

had the pleasure of getting to know many residents of the communities the college serves.

I have learned that people are very proud of Kish, and I have yet to meet someone who did not either attend the college or have a family member who attended.

Kish is beloved by those who live in the district, and rightly so. The college has and will continue to help many local residents – whether they chose to start their college career locally, are undecided on their college major or want to learn a skill or trade for the local workforce.

Our goal is to continue the Kish pride that exists inside and outside the college walls.

As I start my second year of serving as president of Kishwaukee College, I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish and the services we have provided to our students and community. We have set a course for the future with a strong, solid Board of Trustees helping to guide us.

Although challenges still lie before us, we are ready to face them together.

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Board of Education will decide whether to scrap a requirement that public schools teach high school students to scrutinize “all sides” of scientific theory after hearing Tuesday from academics who say that was meant to water down lessons on evolution and leave students wondering whether God created the universe.

Supporters of the existing high school science curriculums told the board that changing the rule could hurt independent thought in classrooms across America’s second-largest state.

How Texas teaches its 5.3-plus million public school students evolution has been a flashpoint for years, despite federal courts rulings against teaching creationism and the similar theory of intelligent design in public schools. The standards govern what teachers cover in classrooms, topics on standardized tests and the material published in textbooks statewide. Texas is one of the nation’s largest textbook purchasers, so changes publishers make to meet the state’s curriculum standards can wind up altering contact in textbooks sold around the U.S. – Wire report

Catholic Schools Week celebrates community, faith, knowledge

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Parents and students of St. Mary Catholic School in DeKalb delivered a standing ovation to 14-year-old Charlie Vivirito as he closed out a schoolwide talent show with a performance of James Brown’s “I Feel Good” on Tuesday.

“My teacher was giving extra credit was one reason I did it, but I just like being on stage,” said Vivirito, who has participated in Children’s Community Theatre in DeKalb for about five years.

The talent show is just one of the special events the school puts on to celebrate Catholic Schools Week, a nationwide effort to highlight the value of Catholic education that has been recognized since 1974, according to the National Catholic Educational Association.

St. Mary Principal Roseann Feldmann congratulated the nearly 30 students who participated, who had talents ranging from singing to making balloon animals.

Twelve-year-old Reilly Farrell, who said he has been playing piano for more than 10 years, played a piece by 1800s composer Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin and also was part of a group of students who performed a piece from the musical “Hamilton.”

Other students involved with the performance included Addyson White, Marisa Manhart and Kaylee Luetkebuenger.

The week started with students being able to wear pajamas to school.

Parents of pre-kindergarten through second-grade students were invited to have lunch with their children Tuesday, while the rest of the grades were scheduled to do the same today and Thursday.

There also will be a spelling bee for fourth- through eighth-graders today, a pep rally for all students involved in sports programs Thursday, and a faculty versus eighth grade volleyball game Friday, which Feldmann said is her favorite part of the week.

“The walls of the gymnasium will be shaking back and forth with everybody cheering for the faculty and eighth grade,” she said.

DeKalb council OKs $25K for Thai Pavilion upgrades

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The DeKalb City Council authorized spending up to $25,000 for exterior improvements to the new Thai Pavilion location at 251 E. Lincoln Highway during its meeting last Monday.

Sam Wong, owner of the property of the restaurant’s current location at 131 E. Lincoln Highway, plans to make interior and exterior improvements to the building to make it compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. He asked for a $25,000 tax increment financing loan from the city to cover 40.6 percent of the cost of the exterior work, which is estimated at $61,000.

Wong also is undertaking interior renovations that will cost about $130,000, according to city documents.

City officials determined that the best source of funding for the project would be through the Architectural Improvement Program, which could cover work on the outside of the building but not inside.

On Thursday, the school will host a family breakfast for parents of students, and it will hold its own talent show Friday.

Principal Jan Benson, who has been in her position only for a year since retiring from Sycamore Community Unit School District 427, said her goal is to try to encourage a religious education for children.

Benson added that the school also participates in charity events, benefiting organizations such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Hope for Haitians and Safe Passage, which provides for domestic violence victims in DeKalb County.

SANDWICH – City leaders are hoping to educate voters about what they say is a needed sales tax increase before the April election after a nearly identical referendum failed in the fall.

In November, Sandwich voters rejected a proposal to increase the sales tax rate by a percentage point on most goods sold in the city.

About 1,630 voters – or 55.01 percent – opposed the referendum. Twenty days after the election, the City Council unanimously approved putting the referendum back in front of voters April 4 in the consolidated election.

Sandwich Mayor Rick Olson said he thinks the measure can pass this time if voters have more information about the sales tax proposal.

“We’ve got to get the facts out,” he said.

The proposed 1 percent sales tax is expected to bring in about $700,000 more a year. Olson said 65 percent of that money would come from people who live outside the city’s boundaries but shop at Sandwich businesses.

The 1 percent sales tax would be added to the existing 6.25 percent sales tax for most purchases, but Olson said it wouldn’t include vehicle sales and thus wouldn’t affect automobile dealerships.

The sales tax revenue will be used to cover the cost of running the city. Olson said the city has an operating budget of about $6 million a year. Last year it ran a deficit. The city also plans to use some of the money for its new police station, a project expected to cost about $4 million, Olson said.

Sandwich’s sales tax is lower than many surrounding communities, Olson said. In DeKalb and Sycamore, the sales tax rate is 8 percent, according to the Illinois Department of Revenue.

Without the money, Olson said the city would have to make difficult decisions about how to maintain existing city services and may have to reduce service levels. The city’s nonunion employees didn’t get a raise last year, he said.

Sandwich also wants to become less reliant on state funding given the uncertainty of Illinois’ finances, Olson said.

Born: September 21, 1922; in Albert Lea, MN Died: January 23, 2017; in Rockford, IL Richard (Dick) Myrland, age 94, passed on Monday, January 23, 2017 in his home at Wesley Willows, Rockford, IL. Dick was born on September 21, 1922 in Albert Lea, MN, the son of Richard Sr. and Clara (Johnson) Myrland, moving to Rockford at age 6.

He married Jacquelyn Anderson of Evanston in 1944, who preceded him in death in 2004 after 60 years of marriage.

Dick is survived by his children and their spouses, Robert (Laura) Myrland of Memphis, John (Nancy) Myrland of Indianapolis, and Cynthia (Gerald) Kinsley of Loves Park; grandchildren, Lynn Green, Kristin (Tony) Dixon, Jenny (Jason) Magill, Kathryn (Steven) Linden, Kent (Marissa) Giardini, and Robert Myrland Jr.; great-grandchildren, Emma, Emelia, Natalya, Flynn, Coco, Preston and Adeline; sister, Dorothy Bonebreak; brother, Donald (Lillian) Myrland both of Rockford; and

DeKALB – Parents within DeKalb Community Unit School District 428 will be able to register their children for kindergarten for the 2017-18 school year starting Feb. 15.

Registration will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 15 and 16 at all District 428 elementary schools. Parents can call the Education Center at 815-7542199 to determine which elementary school their child will attend.

Students must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 in order to register.

DeKALB – With fewer properties on the market, homes sales increased last year, and sale prices gained 6.1 percent in DeKalb County.

Sales of existing homes in DeKalb County increased 3.2 percent in December and ended the year up 3.7 percent, according to data released by the Illinois Association of Realtors. There were 1,231 homes sold in 2016 compared with 1,187 in 2015.

The median sales price in DeKalb County increased 6.1 percent to $151,250 for the year, up from $142,500 in 2015.

The inventory of homes for sale in the county continued to fall in December, as it had for most of the year. In December, the number of homes on the market in the county dropped 8.5 percent to 344, down from 376 in December 2015. The Realtors association report didn’t provide year-to-date figures for local housing inventory.

“Home sales numbers likely would have been stronger in 2016 had there simply been enough inventory to satisfy demand,” IAR President Doug Carpenter said in a statement. “That said, Illinois home sellers are finding in many cases they can get a premium price and that they are able to sell their homes quickly, a trend we see extending into 2017.”

Statewide, home sales in December 2016 totaled 11,629 homes sold, down 2.8 percent from 11,969 in December 2015. Year-end 2016 home sales totaled 162,380, up 3.9 percent from 156,239 in 2015, according to the IAR. The statewide median price in December was $174,900, up 6.0 percent from December 2015, when the median price was $165,000.

The median is a typical market price where half the homes sold for more and half sold for less. The year-end 2016 median price reached $184,000, up 6.4 percent from $173,000 in 2015, according to the IAR.

DeKALB – The DeKalb/Sycamore Bookcase Project will host a banquet to support the annual effort to promote literacy by providing 50 solid oak bookcases to starter libraries for children enrolled at the Two Rivers Head Start program.

The banquet will be at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 in the DeKalb High School cafeteria, 501 W. Dresser Road.

Attendees will receive a copy of “Learning, Earning and Giving Back: A Guide to a Happy and Successful Life” by A Bookcase for Every Child founder Jim Davidson while supplies last.

Entertainment at the banquet will be provided by a DeKalb High School musical group, according to a news release from the nonprofit organization.

NEW YORK – Caterpillar Inc. is moving its headquarters to the Chicago area and won’t build a new complex in its current Peoria location.

The move comes as the company faces a weak equipment market that has been cutting into its bottom line.

Last week, the farming and construction equipment maker reported a wider fourth-quarter loss on charges and higher restructuring costs. It has been cutting jobs and facilities over the last several years.

“As a result of continuing challenging market conditions and the need to prioritize resources to focus on growth, Caterpillar will not build the previously announced headquarters complex in Peoria,” the company said.

The company said it will locate a limited group of senior executives and support functions in the Chicago area later this year, saying it is

a more strategic location. It expects about 300 people to be based at the new location.

“Locating our headquarters closer to a global transportation hub, such as Chicago, means we can meet with our global customers, dealers and employees more easily and frequently,” CEO Jim Umpleby said.

Caterpillar said the vast majority of its people will remain in central Illinois. The current Caterpillar building in Peoria will continue to be used.

Caterpillar joins several other agriculture-focused businesses in the Midwest that have relocated to Chicago over the years.

Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. moved from its central Illinois base, in Decatur, in 2014. ConAgra moved to Chicago in 2016 after nearly a century in Omaha, Nebraska.

EDWARDSVILLE – A former Edwardsville police officer has pleaded guilty to six felony counts more than two years after he was charged with a long string of burglaries.

Brian Barker, 43, pleaded guilty to four burglary charges and one charge each of official misconduct and aggravated possession of stolen firearms.

Barker was arrested in December 2014 and charged in multiple burglaries of businesses and homes over a period of 15 years, some of which he committed while on duty and in uniform.

Madison County prosecutors said video footage showed him cleaning out the cash register of a local hair salon.

Evidence found in his home linked him to a number of other burglaries.

Barker’s attorney said an additional 16 charges will be dropped and that Barker will negotiate with the state’s attorney’s office for restitution to the victims.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch, a fast-rising conservative judge with a writer’s flair, to the Supreme Court on Tuesday night, setting up a fierce fight with Democrats over a jurist who could shape America’s legal landscape for decades to come.

At 49, Gorsuch is the youngest Supreme Court nominee in a quarter-century. He’s known on the Denver-based 10th Circuit Court of Appeals for clear, colloquial writing, advocacy for court review of government regulations, defense of religious freedom and skepticism toward law enforcement.

“Judge Gorsuch has outstanding legal skills, a brilliant mind, tremendous discipline and has earned bipartisan support,” Trump declared, announcing the nomination in his first televised prime-time address from the White House.

Gorsuch’s nomination was cheered by conservatives wary of Trump’s own fluid ideology.

If confirmed by the Senate, he will fill the seat left vacant by the death last year of Antonin Scalia, long the right’s most powerful voice on the high court.

With Scalia’s wife, Maureen, sitting in the audience, Trump took care to praise the late justice. Gorsuch followed, calling Scalia a “lion of the law.”

Gorsuch thanked Trump for entrusting him with “a most solemn assignment.” Outlining his legal philosophy, he said: “It is the rule of judges to apply, not alter, the work of the peo-

ple’s representatives. A judge who likes every outcome he reaches is very likely a bad judge.”

Some Democrats, still smarting over Trump’s unexpected victory in the presidential election, have vowed to mount a vigorous challenge to nearly any nominee to what they view as the court’s “stolen seat.” President Barack Obama nominated U.S. Circuit Court Judge Merrick Garland for the vacancy after Scalia’s death, but Senate Republicans refused to consider the pick, saying the seat should be filled only after the November election.

Senate Democratic leader Charles Schumer said he has “serious doubts” that Gorsuch is within what Democrats consider the legal mainstream, saying he “hewed to an ideological approach to jurisprudence that makes me skeptical that he can be a strong, independent justice on the court.”

Trump’s choice of Gorsuch marks perhaps the most significant decision of his young presidency, one with ramifications that could last long after he leaves office. After a reality TV buildup to Tuesday’s announcement – including a senior Trump adviser saying more than one court candidate was heading to Washington ahead of the event – the reveal was drama free.

For some Republicans, the prospect of filling one or more Supreme Court seats over the next four years has helped ease their concerns about Trump’s experience and temperament. Three justices are in their late 70s and early 80s, and a retirement would offer Trump the opportunity to cement conservative dominance of the court for many years.

Contract too long for D-428 superintendent A five-year contract is too long for most any employee, including public school administrators. This is a thought that probably has occurred to officials at DeKalb Community Unit School District 428.

Doug Moeller, the district’s superintendent, has been on leave since September, during which time he’s been paid more than $72,000. Without some kind of separation agreement, the meter still has a long time to run – Moeller has more than two years remaining on a contract that provides for him to be paid about $450,000 more in salary before it expires.

Moeller was removed from the district office after DeKalb High School Principal Michele Albano obtained a court order requiring he stay away from her. That order has since been lifted, but it’s difficult to see a scenario where Moeller would return.

School board President Victoria Newport has cited due process rights and contractual obligations as reasons why Moeller’s status remains in limbo after four months.

With the 2013-14 school year winding down in May 2014, the District 428 school board gave Moeller the kind of security most people only can dream of: A five-year guarantee of a job with a healthy six-figure salary, five weeks of vacation, four personal days, free family health insurance, a taxpayer-funded pension plan and various other fringe benefits and stipends.

But even from Moeller’s perspective, that dream arrangement might have been turning into a nightmare by September 2016.

School board members were expecting him to do more and more, including covering for various vacant administrative jobs such as human resources.

In an email Moeller sent to Newport on Sept. 18, he complained about increased expectations and of working “13- to 16-hour days” and on weekends.

Before he was placed on leave, records show Moeller had asked a school board member to write him a letter of recommendation for another job.

Instead, the scandal that unfolded means he is being paid handsomely not to work.

Attracting a talented administrator might require more than the one-year deals that most other district administrators sign. However, if school board members had signed Moeller to, say, a three-year contract, this would be the last year of the deal, and a settlement might come easier for both sides.

Considering that district officials had to look elsewhere to find someone to fill Moeller’s role on an interim basis, it seems likely the district’s next permanent superintendent will come from outside the district. We suggest that person be offered a shorter-term contract.

What’s next after Women’s March?

The recent massive Women’s Marches across the country (and beyond) brought together supporters of diverse political agendas: Women’s reproductive rights. Climate change. Public education. Immigration. Voting and human rights. And that’s just for starters. Added together, it has been called the largest demonstration in American history.

In a nation that seems perpetually divided, getting more than a million people to rally in dozens of cities is no small feat. Even the tea party movement, which had its own Taxpayer March on Washington in 2009 and has been influential ever since, paled in comparison.

How the passion from the Women’s Marches is channeled will determine whether the marchers’ voices will have a lasting impact or become a historical footnote to the early days of the Trump administration. It’s one thing to take issue with the incoming president’s

style and policies; focusing that passion into sustained political and social engagement is a quite another. So kudos to freshman state Rep. Victoria Neave, D-Dallas, who helped organize the local march and is trying to channel that energy to improve public education and promote equal pay for women in Texas, among other things.

Count us among those who believe that peaceful constructive protests followed up with serious political and community involvement make for a better America. The million-plus people who gathered last weekend showed how protests can be family events and a lesson in how democracy should work.

Already, event organizers have unveiled a “10 Actions for the first 100 Days” campaign to keep those who supported the march focused on activism, with a new project every 10 days. For the first action, they’ve asked participants to write postcards to lawmakers explaining issues

that matter most to them, such as health care, LGBTQ rights and immigration. Downloadable versions of the postcards are available online, at womensmarch.com/100.

Want to move beyond writing lawmakers? (Psst ... They take phone calls, too.) There are a host of other ways to influence the political process. Start by making sure you’re registered to vote – and helping register others, as well. If that seems like small potatoes, start preparing to run for office yourself.

And it doesn’t all have to be political. Volunteer, to share your passion with those closest to you. It could be as simple as volunteering at your neighborhood school, donating clothes to the nearest shelter, or assisting high school students in filling out financial aid forms.

The bottom line is to be an engaged citizen, to show what can be accomplished when you get off the sidelines. And to keep it up.

VIEWS Leonard Pitts Alex Harris is to cringe with disgust: “A thousand people watched for nearly an hour as Naika Venant prepared to kill herself.

They kept watching for another hour as the 14-year-old dangled on her scarf from the shower door in the bathroom of her Miami Gardens foster home.

“People mocked the young girl, called her names and reacted to the video with Facebook’s laughing emoji, said Antonio Gethers, one of her 4,500 Facebook friends. Others posted cruel parody videos pretending to hang themselves, too.”

The bleak despair and dead-end hope that cause people to take their lives is, unfortunately, all too familiar.

And those feelings can be magnified dangerously in adolescence, an age where all emotions are outsized, all passions urgent and raw. Factor in that she was a survivor of physical abuse and sexual assault, and it becomes depressingly easy to imagine the forces that drove Naika to destroy herself.

It is less easy to understand why

that act was received the way it was.

The harsh laughter and cold ridicule of “people” – the word is used advisedly – who watched Naika’s suicide suggest that we flatter ourselves when we call ourselves a higher species.

Apparently, only one individual tried to help; a friend saw the live feed and called police, but inadvertently sent them to the wrong address.

By the time it got sorted out, Naika was beyond saving.

Miami-Dade schools chief Alberto Carvalho blames Facebook for what happened, which is as understandable as it is misguided.

Might as well blame the sidewalk where Kitty Genovese was killed in 1964 as she screamed for help that didn’t come.

Or the Golden Gate Bridge, where a 2006 documentary, “The Bridge,” shows passersby passing by without intervening as people climb up on the ledge, preparing to jump. Or the walkway behind a Salem, New Jersey, McDonald’s where a young mother was brutally beaten in 2014 while observers laughed and recorded it on their cellphones.

Facebook is an easy target, but it is not the web service whose behavior is appalling here. It is, rather, the ordinary people, the everyday Janes and Joes who could have acted to save this

child, but did not.

One is mindful of what’s called “the bystander effect,” which, according to Psychology Today, “occurs when the presence of others hinders an individual from intervening in an emergency situation.”

But that doesn’t explain the laughter. It does not make sense of the mocking derision of a troubled child.

No, that behavior speaks to moral stupidity, to the objectification of other people and their pain, to a selfish inability to extend compassion beyond the barricades of one’s own life. All of which have come to feel far too commonplace.

It cries out for families, worship houses and schools to rededicate themselves to teaching what it means to be a truly human being. That would be a good way to give meaning to this tragedy.

It’s haunting to think Naika might have killed herself on Facebook hoping to be seen.

Yes, an audience watched her die.

Then they clicked their browsers to see what else was on.

Some marchers’ behaviors didn’t command respect

To the Editor: Since when does going topless and marking up one’s body with vulgarities empower a woman and elicit respect?

Since when does listening to narcissistic celebrities spew their venom and vulgarities empower a woman? Since

when does telling people you’ve thought many times about blowing up the White House and your past antics such as slithering around on the floor and mimicking masturbation elicit respect?

Since when is writing on the back of young daughters ”Don’t touch this p****” respectable? Since when is leaving your garbage all over the city property you just marched on (demanding respect) respectable?

I am a woman. I am self-empowered. I am respectable and respected because my behavior elicits that. I would never degrade myself to the level some of the

women marchers took themselves.

To all of the women who marched respectfully and marched for a reason other than simply hating Donald Trump, more power to you. I respect you.

To the others who simply made a mockery of and degraded themselves, shame on you.

And to anyone who simply threw their signs and garbage in the streets to be picked up by the cities you marched in demanding respect, you deserve no respect because you cannot show respect.

It has since been learned that the actual number is not clear. The original figure was based on the “views” logged on the site as reported by multiple people who watched the video before it was taken down by Facebook.

One thousand views may mean 1,000 individuals or it may mean significantly fewer people, with some returning several times.

Moreover, it is not clear that each “view” represented someone staying with the video to the point at which she took her own life.

Six people who said they viewed the video told the Herald that cruel comments were posted, with some posts suggesting the hanging was a hoax. (The comments, like the video, are no longer viewable on Facebook Live.)

A few thoughts on the lonely death of Naika Venant.

As you may have heard, Naika, a Miami teenager, hanged herself in the dark hours of a Sunday morning. She did this live on Facebook. We’ll likely never know why she chose to do it that way.

Perhaps she felt invisible. Perhaps she wanted to be seen.

Her self-destruction drew attention, all right, but surely not the kind she wanted. To read the report by The Miami Herald’s Carol Marbin Miller and

Huskies squander impressive 1st half in loss

DeKALB – One of the best halves of the season turned out to be for naught for the Northern Illinois men’s basketball team.

The Huskies had an early double-digit lead over first-place Akron but suffered a 76-73 loss to the Zips on Tuesday night – their third consecutive loss at the NIU Convocation Center.

NU put on one of its best showings – taking a 47-33 lead over Akron into halftime after shooting 19 for 32 (59.4 percent) from the field and 5 for 7 (71.4 percent) from the 3-point line. The Huskies (13-9 overall, 5-4 in Mid-American Conference West) led by as many as 15 in the final minute of the first half.

“That was our best opening 20 minutes,” Huskies coach Mark Montgomery said. “We were shooting the ball and getting the ball inside and getting points in transition.”

NIU senior center Marin Maric finished with a game-high 23 points – 18 of which came in the first half – and he had 10 rebounds to lead the Huskies. Senior guard Aaric Armstead had 11 of his 13 points in the first half and sophomore guard Laytwan Porter had 10.

Porter had a desperation 3-pointer at the final buzzer that fell short for the Huskies.

The Zips (19-3 overall, 9-0 in MAC East) outscored the Huskies, 43-26, in the second half, forcing the Huskies into 12 turnovers.

“The 12 turnovers in the second half hurt, and we missed free throws,” Montgomery said of the Huskies, who finished with 16 turnovers. “Some of those key turnovers late, you can’t get those back. We played well enough to win but fell short.”

Akron guard Antino Jackson had a team-high 22 points and center Isaiah Johnson added 21 – the duo combined for 31 points in the second half.

The Huskies also had another tough stretch in the final minutes of a loss.

The Zips took the lead for good on a putback by Johnson to put them ahead, 66-65, with 3:50 left in the game. The Huskies got to the line down three with 54 seconds remain-

NIU freshman guard Justin Thomas answered with a layup and was fouled but missed the free throw with 18 seconds remaining. Akron bumped the lead up with a pair of free throws by Noah Robotham to make it, 74-70 with 15 seconds left.

Huskies sophomore forward Levi Bradley made things interesting by connecting on a tough 3-pointer to cut it to 74-73 with four seconds left, but Jackson made two more free throws and Porter’s last-second 3 was off.

“You can’t miss two free throws in the final minute in a 1-point, one-possession game,” Montgomery said.

NCAA takes a look at analytics for team selections, seeding

PHOENIX – The NCAA has used the RPI as a metric to help it pick the NCAA Tournament field for more than three decades.

The analytics system may be ready for an upgrade.

The NCAA recently met with some of the best statistical minds in college basketball to explore new metrics for selecting the 36 at-large teams and seeding the 68 teams in the NCAA Tournament. No decisions were made and no changes are imminent, but progress was made toward finding a system to enhance the process.

“We learned a lot, but in some ways it raised additional questions,” said Dan Gavitt, NCAA senior vice president of basketball. “That’s good, that’s all part of the process of it. It was very educational, but we’ve got more work to do on it.”

The Jan. 20 meeting in Indianapolis brought together Ken Pomeroy of KenPom.com, Jeff Sagarin of Sagarin. com (and USA Today), KPI proprietor Kevin Pauga and ESPN’s Ben Alamar with NCAA officials to discuss ways of implementing more analytics in the tournament seeding and bracketing process.

The RPI has been a part of the process since 1981, but the National Association of Basketball Coaches asked the NCAA to look at using more advanced metrics. The goal is to put a finer point on the data that help determine the 36 at-large teams and seeding for every team for the tournament.

“I think it’s a good time to take a fresh look at what makes the most sense to sort, what makes the most sense for seeding teams,” said Mark Hollis, NCAA Tournament selection committee chairman and athletic director at Michigan State. “Everything’s on the table for the future.”

The analytical world of college hoops breaks down into two main metrics: predictive, like KenPom, Sagarin, BPI, and results-oriented, like RPI and KPI. The NCAA must determine how much of each side should be used or whether to create a composite of multiple methods. It also must find a system that is easily understandable; get too deep in the woods and teams, coaches and fans will not understand it, and complaints about the system would surely skyrocket.

One possibility would be to use results-based metrics for selecting teams, predictive metrics to seed them.

“There was a lot of talk around which is better: Is one more appropriate for selecting teams, another better for seeding the teams once the field is selected?” Gavitt said. “There’s a lot that has to go into thinking about that.”

Finding the right mix of analytics is not going to be easy. Each system incorporates inordinate amounts of data points and, frankly, a lot of decimal points for selection committee members to digest. Each one can produce an outlier as well, which could lead the

NCAA to create some sort of composite.

Gavitt said some of what was discussed will likely be shared with the NABC board and with members at the Final Four in Phoenix, with discussions continuing until at least the NCAA’s July basketball meeting. The hope is to have something in place for the 2017-18 season, but the main goal is to get it right first.

“Right now, it’s just a discussion with really good minds to put those together and see where that goes,” Hollis said.

The analytical ball is rolling.

NEW YORK – Breanna Stewart didn’t think twice about heading to Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday night to join the protest against President Donald Trump’s travel ban, which bars citizens of seven predominantly Muslim nations from entering the U.S. So the WNBA Rookie of the Year, who was in Los Angeles rehabbing a knee injury, was one of a few hundred people to go to the airport .

“I play for Team USA. My dad wears an American flag tank top. I feel deeply patriotic, but I also recognize how privileged I have been, and this ban just goes against everything that makes me proud to be an American,” Stewart told The Associated Press in an email Monday night. “I felt like I needed to be a part of fighting for what is right. It’s moments like this where you have to take a side, and joining in felt like the right thing to do. It was more, how could I not go?”

Stewart said it was her first protest, “It really puts things into perspective.

We were out there fighting for other human’s safety.

“Even in the biggest games (of basketball), you’re fighting to do your best, for your teammates and to represent all the work you have put in, but it’s not life and death. Though there might be less pressure on me personally because I’m just developing my voice as an activist and there to support the lawyers, etc., who are fighting the battle in court, this is a life-anddeath issue.”

Sky agree to trade star Delle Donne to Mystics CHICAGO SUN–TIMES

The Sky have agreed to a trade that would send Elena Delle Donne to the Washington Mystics for two players – Stefanie Dolson and Kahleah Cooper – and the Mystics’ first-round draft pick (second overall) in 2017, according to a published report.

Earlier Monday,Washington acquired the Seattle Storm’s No. 6 pick in the WNBA draft as part of a three-player trade with the New Elena York Liberty.

Sky owner Michael Delle Donne Alter wrote in an email to The Associated Press on Monday night that “All I can say is that we are discussing it with Mystics.”

Delle Donne couldn’t be traded until Wednesday at the earliest, the first day players are allowed to sign. The Sky have to sign her before completing

any trade.

Washington coach and general manager Mike Thibault wouldn’t talk about the potential Delle Donne deal but said the team has “some other things we know we’re going to do down the road, whether it be in the next few days or next week or so.”

Last week, a report cited sources as saying Delle Donne had been unhappy in Chicago for a number of reasons, including a revolving door that has ushered former teammates and coaches out. The report also said she felt out of place with the Sky. Former Sky coach and general manager Pokey Chatman, who was fired in October, declined to comment last week. Chatman was hired to coach the Indiana Fever in November and said in a text message she wanted to focus on her new team.

Wade, for one, was glad to see LeBron sharpen his spurs.

Sometimes when guys get a microphone in front of their face, they just talk and talk and talk, and forget about their history. We all make that mistake [sometimes], but especially that guy on TV. He acts like he just walked on water.

“LeBron is who he is. We all have flaws. But when your flaws are a little

bit more, then you should shut up.”

Those who viewed Wade’s comments after the Hawks loss as hypocritical – his inconsistent defensive effort and questionable shot selection received plenty of scrutiny – will have fun with that line. But even that furor will fade into the backdrop of this bipolar season if Wade and the Bulls (24-25) manage another upswing as they prepare to begin a six-game road gantlet Thursday in Oklahoma City. Golden State and Houston also await, and the Kings – who recently threw a scare into the Bulls at home – and the Timberwolves (winners of eight of their last 11) are dangerous.

Wade said a 3-3 record on the trip is a reasonable goal, but he isn’t interested in deliberating much on the timing or value of the exercise.

“Every team says a road trip comes at a good time,” Wade said. “I don’t want to be cliché anymore.

“We’re gonna have a lot of time to spend together, so from a team-building and -bonding perspective it’s always good. But from a basketball standpoint, it’s only good if you win. It’s not a good trip if you’re losing.”

CHICAGO – Dwyane Wade came up in a company-line NBA. Playing for a notorious control freak in Pat Riley, he learned the time-honored tradition of tightly guarding team business and only airing gripes the old-fashioned way: with leaks to the media.

Belichick defies perceptions in Houston BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush

HOUSTON – There is no question that Bill Belichick is the best coach in the NFL today. The question is, is he the greatest of all time.

I believe he is.

Belichick’s 237-115 record (.673 winning percentage) is surpassed only by Don Shula’s 328-156-6 (.677) and George Halas’ 318-148-31 (.682).

But Belichick’s 25-10 (.714) record in the playoffs blows away Shula’s 19-17 (.528) and Halas’ 6-3 (.667), as does Belichick’s record of one championship every 5.5 years compared with Shula’s one every 16.5 years and Halas’ one every 6.7 years.

Most of all, although Belichick’s accomplishments have come entirely in the salary cap era of balanced payrolls and unrivaled parity around the league, an era in which Shula coached only three seasons and Halas none.

But beyond the coach, who is Bill Belichick?

He is perceived to be a win-atall costs, break-any-rules-he-has-to curmudgeon with little patience for appearances and even less for the media.

But that is not the Belichick we have seen so far at Super Bowl LI. The NFL’s version of the Ringling Brothers circus has for years been Media Day, which last year became Opening Night.

A reporter who I assume was hoping to annoy him asked Belichick on Monday night whether he enjoyed Super Bowl Opening Night. I assume that because every sane person I know who’s ever attended the event hates it.

But the Pats coach took the high road, answering, “I can’t tell you how much of a highlight it is. This is where you want to be at the end of the year. You want to be in this game. You want to be playing for the championship.

“We are fortunate enough to do that.”

Who is this guy masquerading as Bill Belichick?

Or is the truth he simply isn’t the Darth Vader many try to paint him as?

One of the ultimate compliments to Belichick’s greatness is this week’s opponent has been crafted by two of his original disciples.

Atlanta general manager Thomas Dimitroff and assistant general manager Scott Pioli both got their starts under Belichick in Cleveland.

Asked whether he sees any of his philosophies in them, Belichick replied, “Tom had a great background in the college draft.

“Going all the way back to Cleveland and other places along the way, whether it was Scott or I, or Thomas and I, or Thomas and Scott or whatever it was, the way you evaluate players and the things that are important, what type of player you want on your team or whatever it is, there is a certain way you can construct a team.”

There is a story I’ve never really shared. Almost four years ago when it looked like I might be closing the doors on Pro Football Weekly forever, I got a call from Berj Najarian, his long time assistant, asking whether I had a moment for Belichick.

Belichick came on the line and said, “Hub, I needed to take a minute to tell you how sorry I am, how much I’ll miss Pro Football Weekly and how much it’s meant to the game and the league.”

We shared close ties to the great Joel Buchsbaum but weren’t friends and have had minimal contact since.

It was just one of the classiest things ever done for me, and it came at a time of real personal despair.

Belichick may be hard to deal with, but he isn’t a bad guy.

He is a good man with very little time for anything but winning.

Correspondence began in 2010 over ‘excessive’ reliance

A string of emails that began in 2010 with the Atlanta Falcons head trainer and reached all the way to owner Arthur Blank showed a franchise worried about its “excessive” reliance on painkillers to treat players and the potential embarrassment that could cause the team and the NFL. One topic raised in the email chain concerned the review by an outside agency that found the team spent $81,000 on prescriptions for medications for players in 2009 – almost three times the league average.

Almost every recipient on the email chain – from Blank, president Rich McKay and genArthur Blank eral manager Thomas Dimitroff to then-head athletic trainer Marty Lauzon – remains with the team, which plays New England in the Super Bowl on Sunday.

“That’s being litigated now. That’s not something we’re going discuss right now,” Dimitroff said Monday night when asked about the emails. “When the time is right, we’ll readdress that.”

The emails were entered into the court record Thursday as part of a proposed class-action lawsuit by more than 1,800 former NFL players who claim they were encouraged by the medical and training staffs of NFL teams to abuse painkillers and continue playing without regard for their long-term health.

The case is being heard in the Northern District of California by U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup. The same allegations originally were filed in a 2014 class-action lawsuit that is on appeal before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

The email chain was presented to the court as an example of thousands of similar documents gathered during discovery that the ex-players’ lawyers want entered into the record. It was coincidental that the Falcons’ chain was released before the Super Bowl.

Lauzon was not with the team at the time of the critical review. He became the Falcons’ head trainer in January 2010 and serves as the team’s director of sports medicine and performance.

He first wrote to Dimitroff in May 2010 to note the conclusions contained in the review by SportPharm, an outside agency brought in by the NFL to look at how teams purchased, dispensed and tracked medications, including powerful painkillers and prescription drugs.

Among the problems Lauzon highlighted from SportPharm’s review was the Falcons’ “excessive dispensation” of narcotics and other medications, which risked creating a “culture of dependency.”

“Within the first days on the job, I was informed that we barely missed a DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) investigation because of improper billing issues,” Lauzon also told Dimitroff.

One of the central contentions of the painkiller lawsuit is that teams did not properly keep records about prescriptions and which players were getting drugs.

Dimitroff forwarded the email to the owner only hours later.

“I thought it quite important for you to be aware of a rather sensitive subject and one we need to discuss before we include others on this topic matter,”

Dimitroff wrote to Blank.

“Agree – we should talk about this together with Rich (McKay, the Falcons’ president),” Blank replied.

It’s not clear what practices were changed as part of the discussion, and there is no evidence the Falcons violated league rules. What’s clear is that Lauzon was warning team executives that practices uncovered during the review could embarrass the team and raise compliance issues with the league.

Lauzon’s first email to Dimitroff also copied in Jeff Fish, who was Atlanta’s strength coach at the time and was released by the club in January 2013. The trainer also expressed concerns that “players at the end of their careers going through medical issues” would seek media attention and “say they abused or are now addicted” to drugs as a result of the club’s practices.

Dimitroff subsequently forwarded the emails to McKay, who remains team president and also serves as chairman of the NFL Competition Committee, making him one of the more influential executives in the league.

McKay reached out the next day to

Dr. Elliot Pellman, a rheumatologist who controversially led the NFL’s committee on brain injury at the time and later became a league medical adviser.

He asked Pellman whether Mary Anne Fleming, who was then-director of player benefits in the league office, had recommended the Falcons replace their doctors in the wake of the same critical review, and whether she was aware who actually administered the club’s day-to-day medical regimen.

“I need to know – is this really true and does she realize the on-site trainer is really in control???” McKay wrote, then added. “I need to keep this confidential ...”

Lauzon noted that Fleming had also seen the SportPharm review and recommended the Falcons “start clean on all levels” – a new team doctor, head trainer and even a new pharmacy account number.

The proposed class-action lawsuit alleges that NFL trainers distributed drugs improperly, and teams failed to properly store and keep accurate records of the drugs, violating federal laws.

I’ve loved chicken wings since long before they were ever a cute little bar menu item, looking more like tiny drumsticks than an actual Z-shaped wing.

My mom, a savvy penny-pinching college student when I was born, included chicken wings on our weekly dinner menu rotation throughout my childhood; fried chicken skin was practically a major food group. In college, when I discovered spicy, buttery buffalo wings, I was in pool-hall heaven.

Now, as an adult, I still love all things buffalo-flavored. I’ll pour spicy sauce straight from the bottle onto anything from roasted cauliflower to scrambled eggs. Meatballs, which are a big favorite around our house, are no exception.

Meatballs are an excellent family menu staple – I just swap out flavors according to our tastes (and pantry), and even make a bunch ahead of time to keep in the freezer for busy weeknights. They also are an ideal appetizer treat for events like movie night or watching Sunday football.

Turns out, baked meatballs are a great way to get both the flavor and fun of buffalo wings without the fried chicken skin derailing our nutritious eating. Lean ground beef is my favorite meat to use (96 percent lean

Sometimes I dunk the cooked meatballs in extra sauce, rendering them too messy and spicy for my kiddos,

but perfect for me, who doesn’t mind going through multiple napkins in a sitting. But for the average meatball eater watching the game, let’s call swimming in sauce an optional, if delicious, step.

Buffalo Style Meatballs

Start to finish: 30 minutes Servings: 10 servings, 2 meatballs each 1 egg white 3 tablespoons spicy buffalo sauce (like Frank’s, or hot chili sauce) 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 1½ teaspoon granulated garlic

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F., and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large bowl, use a fork to mix together the egg white, buffalo sauce, paprika, garlic and salt and pepper until blended. Add the beef and mix well with your hands. Then mix in the blue cheese and breadcrumbs. Let sit for 5 minutes.

If mixture is too wet to form into balls, add in another tablespoon or two of breadcrumbs.

Form the meat into golf-sized balls, and place on lined baking sheet. (Or use a mini-muffin pan sprayed with nonstick spray.) Spray the meatballs lightly with oil from the mister (or nonstick spray). Bake 15 minutes and then remove from the oven.

Mix together the melted butter and buffalo sauce in a small bowl. Turn the meatballs, and brush with the basting sauce. Return to the oven until cooked through, about 5 more minutes. If desired, toss the meatballs in extra sauce in a large bowl (optional, but tasty and messy!).

Although students at The Culinary Institute of America face a seemingly endless to-do list, central to their course work is recipe and menu development. Food is life, and even the best-managed restaurant is nothing without flavorful, exciting and innovative recipes.

A recent standout is this recipe for Hanoi Pork Meatballs with Hoisin-Peanut Dipping Sauce, which is ideal if you’re hosting friends and family.

Bursting with the flavors of Southeast Asia, like garlic, ginger and bright herbs, these meatballs are an easy make-ahead option that will stand out against the usual party favorites. The sweet hoisin-peanut dipping sauce will remind you of those other meatballs you may have simmered in your slow

cooker, but with a little something special and unexpected.

Hanoi Pork Meatballs with Hoisin-Peanut Dipping Sauce Start to finish: 55 minutes (Active time: 40 minutes) Servings: 5 (makes 15 meatballs, 3 per serving)

Non-stick cooking spray, as needed 1 tablespoon sesame oil 1 tablespoon canola oil 5 cloves minced garlic 2½ tablespoons minced fresh ginger 3 minced scallions 2 teaspoons chopped parsley 1½ tablespoons chopped Thai basil 1½ tablespoons chopped cilantro 1½ tablespoons fish sauce 1 teaspoon sriracha 1/8 cup whole milk cottage cheese

1/2 cup panko bread crumbs 2 teaspoons ground black pepper 1 teaspoon lime zest 1 pound ground pork Hoisin-Peanut Dipping Sauce (recipe follows) Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Oil a rack for a sheet tray with non-stick cooking spray. Place rack in sheet tray and set aside.

In a medium-size sauté pan, heat both oils over medium heat. Once oil is hot, add the garlic, ginger, and scallions.

Sweat until aromatic and soft (about 5 minutes). Remove from pan, and allow to cool.

In a mixing bowl, add and combine all remaining ingredients except for the ground pork and dipping sauce. Mix all of these ingredients together thoroughly until completely combined.

Add the ground pork and mix lightly until all the ingredients are lightly incorporated.

Be careful not to over mix the meat, as it will result in tough meatballs.

Scoop or form mixture in 15 1½-ounce balls and place them onto the oiled rack.

Cook the meatballs in the preheated oven for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the internal temperature has reached 155 degrees F. and the exterior is golden brown.

Serve meatballs hot, with toothpicks and a bowl of the Hoisin-Peanut Dipping Sauce to dip.

3/4 cup hoisin sauce 3 tablespoons creamy peanut butter 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lime juice 1 tablespoon soy sauce Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.

A big win for Super Bowl fare

These sweet treats are a riff on the very popular summer campfire s’mores. If you love marshmallow and chocolate and get nostalgic when you think of campfire s’mores, these simpler “no-bake” Game Day S’mores will delight you.

The s’mores are easy to make, appeal to kids of all ages, and are a guaranteed crowd pleaser. There is no baking or fire-roasting, so you can make these indoors, and they are safe for even young children to make. I make these often for events because I can make them ahead of time and store them in the freezer. Some people even prefer eating them when they still are frozen.

You need a package of graham crackers, Nutella, marshmallow fluff and raspberry, strawberry or grape jelly. The best thing is they are customizable – you could add peanut butter or any other spread that you like.

If you want the s’mores to look a little more finished – and I always do – dip the sticky sides in sugar sprinkles

that match your favorite team colors for a perfect Super Bowl presentation, or shaved chocolate and nuts for a more sophisticated look.

For parties, I like to set out the graham crackers and spreads and add a few options such as sliced bananas, crumbled bacon, chocolate chips, chopped nuts, colorful sprinkles and lots of different jellies – the sky and your friends and family’s imaginations are the limit. Give everyone a knife and let them make their own s’mores.

Servings: 20 (1 s’more per serving) Start to finish: 5 minutes 1/2 (14.4 ounces) box graham crackers Nutella Raspberry jelly, or favorite jelly of your choice, preferably no sugar added Marshmallow Fluff Sprinkles in your team’s colors Chopped nuts Mini chocolate chips, mini M&M’s, etc.

Break a graham cracker in half at the perforation.

Spread a generous spoonful of Nutella on one cracker half, and two spoonful’s of Marshmallow Fluff on the other half. Spread a thin layer of jelly over the Nutella.

Place the two halves together and press gently to seal the filling.

For a fun and finished presentation, dip the sticky edges of each s’more in sprinkles, nuts,

or chocolate chips.

Cauliflower pizza crust carries big dose of vitamins

Cauliflower is a wonder-veggie. No longer relegated to boiling and covering with a bright orange cheese sauce (sorry, Mom), cauliflower is stepping out in the place of starch like rice in stir-fries or instead of wheat flour in pizza dough.

Cauliflower is mild, so it takes on whatever flavors you throw at it, which helps it be the convincing chameleon it is. Cauliflower is as healthy as our moms told us, providing a hefty dose of vitamins, including C, K, B6 and folate, as well as smaller doses of other vitamins and minerals, plus filling protein and fiber. All in about 25 calories a cup.

So, it’s a worthy vegetable, and now that it is available in “riced” form in mainstream grocery stores across the country, it’s time to take a look if you haven’t already. Let’s start with pizza crust.

Steamed, riced cauliflower is mixed with a binder (usually egg and cheese), and then shaped into a pizza crust shape, baked and then topped with traditional pizza toppings. Bake up a few of these crusts and keep in the freezer for last-minute pizza night that is healthier than takeout.

Tip: make smaller pizza crusts instead of one big huge one. They are just easier to manage and keep intact, and perfect for DIY pizzas on Super Bowl Sunday. Top your pizza crust with whatever toppings you like – lots of cheese and meat if you are simply eating low-carb, or load up with roasted veggies and a light sprinkling of part-skim mozzarella if you want to stay low-cal.

Fine cornmeal for sprinkling, optional Salt and pepper Heat oven to 400 degrees F. Place the riced cauliflower in a microwave-safe dish with 2 tablespoons of water, cover and cook in microwave for 4-5 minutes, or until tender but not mushy. Remove from microwave, drain off water, gently pressing out excess moisture with a spoon, and cool.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, whisk the egg with the cheeses, garlic and Italian seasoning. Place the cooled cauliflower in several paper towels, or in a thin clean dish towel, and gently but firmly squeeze out excess moisture. (You may be surprised by how much liquid you can squeeze out.)

This was after adjusting for depression, because some people who aren’t optimistic actually might be depressed. The decrease in death rates was seen for deaths caused by cancer, strokes, heart attacks and infections.

One problem with the study is women who were the most optimistic had lower smoking rates, were more physically active, had more education and were more likely to be married. Each of these factors is associated with greater longevity. The authors say they adjusted for these factors, but fully adjusting for them is difficult. Another problem with the study is the study might not reflect correlations within the general population, in that 97 percent of the women identified themselves as white.

Overall, the study found what appears to be a correlation between optimism and a better cholesterol level, higher blood levels of antioxidants and improvements in one’s immune system.

My own feeling is optimism is less about sunniness than about hopefulness. This hopefulness helps people get through the bad times, because they realize good times are ahead. And, overall, such people seem to have healthier habits that can help lead to greater longevity.

Dear Doctor: Does outlook really matter when it comes to lifespan, as a recent study suggested?

Dear Reader: In my own experience, I’ve seen pessimistic, unhappy people lead very long lives, and I’ve seen optimistic people’s lives cut short by illness. That doesn’t mean, in the aggregate, optimism has no effect on lifespan.

Specific studies have looked for correlations between an optimistic outlook and cardiovascular disease, finding mortality benefits among those who had a more optimistic attitude. These studies used different scales to judge a person’s level of optimism, with one common approach using a questionnaire about a person’s approach to life. Some, for example, asked people to respond in either agreement or disagreement to statements such as, “Overall, I expect more good things to happen than bad.”

A combined evaluation of many studies assessing the connection between optimism and physical health was reported in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine in 2009.

Researchers measured physical health outcomes by rates of cancer, heart disease, infection rates, pain, diabetes and kidney failure. In the combined evaluation, the authors found a small correlation between better physical health and optimism, and an even smaller correlation between lower death rates and optimism.

A more recent study published in 2016 in the American Journal of Epidemiology followed 70,000 nurses and judged levels of optimism by how they responded to a questionnaire called the Life Orientation test. The women responded to 10 different statements such as, “In uncertain times, I usually expect the best” and “I rarely count on good things happening to me.”

The researchers ranked women into four quartiles, from lowest to highest, and found

(Nonvulnerable, it might have bid a pre-emptive three spades, which probably would have silenced North.) Now North nudged her partner with some heart support, a singleton and a potential source of tricks. Then East might have rebid four diamonds to show the second suit and express some slam interest.

When East bid four spades, though, South took an each-way bet. If four spades was failing, maybe five hearts would make; if four spades was laydown, probably five hearts would be a cheap save.

Somehow, Robot West found a low-diamond lead. East won with the ace and shifted to its singleton club.

Declarer won on the board and led the heart jack, feigning a finesse, but East did not fall for it. The Robot won with its ace and shifted to the spade two! West won with the jack and gave partner a club ruff for down two and the best result possible.
