A level of equality worth protesting POLL YESTERDAY’S I’ve heard more than a few people say they “don’t understand” why so many women marched in cities around the country a couple of weeks ago.

I’ve heard multiple women – grown-up women – say they think American society treats men and women as equals.

We may be equals according to the letter of the law, but the fact is that my straight whiteguy friends and I are more equal. When the guys and I get together to watch the Super Bowl this weekend, it’ll be a regular festival of equality (and buffalo wings).

Other than the Super Bowl, I’ll gloss over the ways mass media is tailored to appeal to men and elevate masculinity, although you can research things such as the “male gaze” or the Bechdel test on your own if you want. Or just look at the advertisements all around you.

In everyday life, men have rights that most women are taught from a young age never to expect for themselves.

As a straight man, I never think about being sexually assaulted.

I’ve never experienced sexual harassment from a boss or co-worker.

I never worry about dressing too provocatively for fear I’ll be shamed or attract unwanted attention from women, or end up a victim of a crime before a judge who thinks I led my attacker on.

I go out after dark alone whenever I want, and I feel safe going pretty much anywhere. If I want to talk to a stranger of the opposite sex, I do so without a second thought.

However, I also have three daughters who are growing up in a society in which women are abused and objectified while some perpetuate the myth that they receive equal treatment.

Any father of daughters knows the joke about having to keep the boys away. The statistics behind that joke aren’t funny at all, however.

EDITOR’S NOTE Eric Olson A 2015 study by the Association of American Universities found that one in four college women experiences sexual violence during her college careers. Usually it’s by a person she knows.

One in 6 women – 15 percent – will be victims of an attempted or actual rape in their lifetime, and 90 percent of rape victims are female. But if they press charges against their attacker, not only will they face potential humiliation in court as their sexual history is dissected, but they’re going to have a hard time seeing justice done without invasively obtained evidence gathered immediately after they were victimized.

Those are some of the realities of our “equal” society. And people marched because in the recent election, we as Americans condoned, or at least were willing to overlook, the behavior from the man we elected president.

Donald Trump has been married three times, has publicly said disparaging things about women and their bodies, before and during the campaign.

Trump was recorded saying in private that his celebrity status allowed him to kiss women, grab them, whatever he wanted.

“They let you do it,” he said. This audio was released during the campaign, and we elected him president anyway.

Women have a right to demand better from society. All of us should support them in that.

Water World exhibit opens at Midwest Museum of Natural History

SYCAMORE – From fact bubbles on the walls to mounted trout and a blue whale vertebra, the newest exhibit at the Midwest Museum of Natural History has a story to tell, and it’s all about water.

Visitors who venture into Water World can view real animal specimens from different aquatic environments and search on a scavenger hunt for facts about the resource, ways living beings depend on it and how it can be conserved for future generations.

This temporary exhibit will be on display until May 5 in the Rotary Gallery at the museum at 425 W. State St. in downtown Sycamore.

Collections of mounted animals from North America, Africa and the Ice Age can be seen year-round in the museum, along with live animals, such as snakes, turtles and lizards.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for seniors and children younger than 12.

Jessica Cunny, exhibit and collections curator, said she began planning and researching for the Water World exhibit in November before selecting specimens from the museum’s collection.

“For this exhibit, it started with me wanting to showcase our freshwater fish; we do have a lot of them that are down there that no one ever sees,” she said. “But then it evolved into the idea of, ‘What does water do for us as humans?’ ” In addition to the freshwater and saltwater sections explaining how fish live in each environment, the exhibit also features a human section with information on how people use water to live.

“A lot of kids probably don’t know that our bodies are made up of 60 percent water,” Cunny said.

Children going through the exhibit can pick up clipboards and complete a scavenger hunt by finding water-related facts posted around the room. In the process, they will learn about the water cycle, reservoirs and dams, the purification of drinking water, and how to reduce their own water footprints, Cunny said.

“I like [the scavenger hunt] as an interactive [project] because it makes kids want to read a little bit more and

Cunny said she tries to come up with exhibits that are relevant to DeKalb County and the Midwest and that also present something new people might not know about.

She said she is from DeKalb, but for nine years she lived in California ,where people talk about water differently.

“You don’t think about droughts necessarily the same way you would think about a drought when you’re living in one,” Cunny said. “So, especially in the conservation section, I really wanted people to know that it’s not never-ending. Sure, it comes out of your tap whenever you turn it on, but how is that affecting the rest of the planet?”

Cunny said she hopes to add more interactive elements to the exhibit, such as a magnetic display of the wa-

ter cycle.

“It’s more educational than it is playful, and I will be adding in a couple of extra things,” she said. “Exhibits are always an ongoing process.”

She said another information-heavy exhibit was AgriCULTURE, the museum’s 2015 summer/fall exhibit that earned an award of merit from the Illinois Association of Museums. The exhibit focused on the agricultural roots of the DeKalb community.

“I grew up here in DeKalb, so it was fun for me to learn more about agriculture and see that this is kind of how our area started, but not everyone necessarily knows about it,” Cunny said.

The museum typically has two temporary exhibits a year, but this year three are planned to make the rotation. An insect exhibit is set to take over in June with an Octoberfest/beer exhibit to run late summer through fall, Cunny said.

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois University is prepared to support those affected by President Donald Trump’s travel ban on seven predominantly Muslim countries deemed to be exporters of terrorism, according to a statement NIU President Doug Baker issued Monday.

On Monday, Baker said that NIU would continue its “core value of embracing diversity” by welcoming people from abroad to study, teach and conduct research at the university.

“As always, our goal is to cultivate a university climate where all cultures are respected, and where no one need worry about his or her status on campus because of nation of origin or a lack of citizenship documentation,” Baker said.

Several Illinois politicians have spoken out on the controversial order as well.

Illinois congressmen who represent parts of DeKalb County, including U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren and U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, have said they are against how the ban has affected legal residents.

Northern Illinois University president day’s executive order are available at the NIU International Student and Faculty Office, Student Affairs and the Campus Cultural Resource Centers. Additionally, the university is advising students from Syria, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Libya, Sudan and Yemen avoid international travel.

Baker also addressed a petition for NIU to become a “sanctuary campus,” stating that the university cannot adopt the term because it would not provide any legal protections.

“While we legally cannot declare NIU a ‘sanctuary campus,’ we pledge that we will do everything we possibly can within the limits of the law to continue to support our undocumented students,” Baker said in the statement.

NIU officials plan to create an office designed to support, advise and counsel undocumented students and expand its ally training to include im-

migrants, according to the statement.

Hultgren, a Republican from Park Ridge whose 14th District includes eastern DeKalb County including Sycamore, said he opposed Trump’s order, which was signed Friday.

Hultgren called the ban “overly broad” and said it had been interpreted inconsistently.

“This has led to unintended consequences, like the barring of legal permanent residents and the rejection of Syrian Christians at the airport, a religious minority that was supposed to be protected by the executive order,” Hultgren said. “Keeping America First means keeping our principles first ... we should have our arms open to those who are fleeing oppression and seeking safety, not turning them away at the door.”

A Crystal Lake-based surgeon, Dr. Amir Heydari, was stopped for questioning Sunday at O’Hare Internation-

al Airport after returning from Iran after Trump’s executive order.

Heydari, a general and bariatric surgeon for Centegra Health System, has dual citizenship in Iran and the U.S. He first left Iran for the United States on Jan. 20, 1981, and has lived in Crystal Lake since 1995.

Kinzinger, a Republican from Kankakee whose 16th District includes DeKalb, said he is opposed to citizens being detained because of their national origins.

“Such detention is unacceptable and must be remedied immediately,” Kinzinger wrote on Medium.com.

O’Hare was one of several U.S. airports where travelers have been held for questioning since Trump’s order.

As a result, thousands of protesters arrived at the airport over the weekend.

Developer plans luxury apartments for downtown DeKalb

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A housing developer wants to raze several downtown buildings, including one that was home to Otto’s, to make way for commercial space and up to 55 luxury apartments.

In a public notice printed in Monday’s edition of the Daily Chronicle, a rezoning petition was filed for the four buildings at 112 E. Lincoln and 118 E. Lincoln, which are part of the same building, 122 E. Lincoln, 124 E. Lincoln and 122 S. First.

Cornerstone Development LLC filed the rezoning petition. However, city officials said John Pappas of Pappas Development is the principal developer behind the project.

Pappas owns the property on 124 E. Lincoln Highway and has a contract to buy the others. He said all of the buildings are currently under contract and declined to comment further.

The plan is to knock down all four and replace them with a four-story residential and commercial building.

The city asked a judge in October for permission to demolish the Otto’s building, which has been vacant since it was declared uninhabitable after a burst pipe more than three years ago.

“I’m pleased to see this investment coming forward,” DeKalb Mayor John Rey said. “It will help diversify and balance the tax base in the downtown sector, which will lessen the tax burden on property owners throughout the community.”

Businesses including Barb City Bagels and Mediterraneo Grill, which experienced water leakage and other problems because of the deterioration of the neighboring vacant building, would have to relocate if the buildings are demolished.

“The Otto’s building has been vacant and unoccupied for a while and that certainly does nothing to help nearby businesses,” Community Development Director Jo Ellen Charlton said. “We have been waiting for someone to make that first move of an investment, and hopefully this will be someone with the confidence of moving forward with an investment which will spawn other opportunities in the area.”

The plans would require the demolition of the

affected buildings to erect a new building, which will consist of a first-floor for commercial use and up to 55 one-bedroom luxury apartments on the upper floors.

Charlton said owners of Barb City Bagels plan to remain in the downtown area and city staff is working with Cornerstone Development on an agreement to allow Mediterraneo Grill to relocate within the city.

The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. Feb. 15 at the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, to address redevelopment plans for these buildings.

Before a hearing takes place, the matter will be brought up as new business during DeKalb’s City Council meeting Feb. 13. Rey said he anticipates the council would consider the proposed project by its Feb. 27 meeting.

People who are interested in attending the public hearing can submit written comments on the proposals to the city of DeKalb’s Community Development Department at 200 S. Fourth St. by 5 p.m.

four farms that came together at this intersection farmed with Case Tractors. I was the John Deere rebel that took the sign down. I should put up a new sign reading “Deere Crossing” since the same four farms now have at least one John Deere each.

In 1941 all the neighbors also milked cows.

As Harriet and I got older and were beginning to be replaced by our son Roger and his wife Beverly we enjoyed the freedom to travel with tour groups to many of the attraction in the U.S. and Alaska.

But later on, Harriet began to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. She spent the last days of her life in Willow Crest nursing home while I was living at home alone with my very good dog Zak. I have felt all my life a responsibility to be an active part in our Somonauk United Presbyterian Church and the local community groups and organizations. I was very disappointed to lose my bid for township road commissioner by one vote.

Keeping all of our property in good condition, I feel has been money well spent.

One interesting experience occurred when we attended Harriet’s favorite Uncle Joe’s funeral.

It was held in a very picturesque church built on the crest of a hill in Hillsborough, Il. Uncle Joe’s death was a result of black lung from his years of working in a coal mine and too many cigarettes.

This church location had many steps up to enter and after a funeral it was the custom of the funeral director to leave the support wheels attached to the casket and use eight pallbearers. Because of the many steps and Joe’s weight leaving the church like this turned out to be “not good.”

Because of the closeness of the pallbearers one of them caught the heel of the man in front of him, causing him to lose his grip on the casket. I guess this caused a domino effect on the others who also lost their hold on the casket. It was therefore dropped down onto the support wheels. Then the casket proceeded to roll down the rest of the steps. As the freewheeling casket rolled past the open door of the hearse, it nicked the door enough to cause the casket to be redirected on down the street. As it approached the drugstore on the corner, the casket was able to jump the curb (since it was only about 2 inches high as a result of the new resurfacing of the street.) The casket proceeded across the sidewalk and into the open door of the drugstore. The jolt of the curb and the threshold of the drugstore caused the casket lid to open up and Uncle Joe in the casket rolled past the druggist. Uncle Joe gave his last “cough” and asked the druggist if he had something to stop this coffin. End of this memory.

Many times during the cloudy days of life I have found a ray of sunshine with a happy thought or a joke.

My heart is set aglow when I see Roger, Bev, and daughter, Jolee enjoy each other so much. Jolee is such a happy girl because of her mother Bev. I pray that they will all have a long life together.

My long life has given me an opportunity to view how Roger and Bev have used what Harriet and I left in their care and the addition they have made to it. I have enjoyed being the go-for-boy for them and their help.

Since I have chosen to be the author of this obituary, I can still visit with my living relatives: my son Roger, his wife Bev, and granddaughter Jolee all of Hinckley, my daughter Joan Hansen of Byron and grandson Ryan Hansen of DeKalb, and grandson David Newton of Rye, New York plus numerous relatives and many friends and neighbors.

Those that have passed on before me are my wonderful friend and wife Harriet, my muchmissed daughter Janet Newton, her husband Lyman Newton, my parents John and Elsie Larson, Harriet’s parents Tom and Lola Solberg, Harriet’s brother Bob Coe, sister-in-law Dorothy Coe, my brother Johnny Mott Larson, sister-in-law Lucille Larson, my brother Glen Larson, my daughter Joan’s husband Greg Hansen, Rev. Richard Harmison and many other friends and neighbors.

On June 13, 2011 my very good dog friend passed away in his sleep next to my bed. His ashes have been spread in his favorite place in my yard and also at Roger and Bev’s house. I felt very alone until I found a very nice 1-year-old female beagle by the name of Lilly to come live with me. She is a very nice, loving dog friend.

As my dog Lilly and I walk in the sunshine of my last days, I have no fear as I move closer to the day when my friends will deliver my body to its grave and my spirit passes through death’s door into the care of the One who has provided me with a 98-year-long and pleasant life here on His earth.

Since flowers are pleasing to the eye and nose such a short time, I would encourage any memorials be given to a charity of your choice.

Services will be held on Saturday, February 11th at Somonauk United Presbyterian Church, 14030 Chicago Road, Somonauk, Illinois 60552. Visitation 10 a.m. to noon, Fay’s barbeque lunch at 12:00 PM, funeral service at 1:30 p.m. followed by burial at Oak Mound Cemetery. Arrangements were completed by Jacobson Funeral Home in Shabbona.

was confused by the process. Amato briefly met with Quinn and others after the hearing.

Schmack and his wife, Jackie, attended the hearing. Schmack said afterward that he was following up on the case and wanted to see what happened.

He also said he plans to speak about the McCullough case March 31 at a Northern Illinois University College of Law symposium titled “Making Murderers: Legal Implications of Wrongful Convictions and the Death Penalty.”

Brady said Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert is waiting for written confirmation from the appellate prosecutors service that they are going to investigate claims that a Seattle police detective committed perjury, as well as other possible misconduct in the prosecution of McCullough. That office has verbally agreed to take the case, Brady said.

SYCAMORE – Jack McCullough could get a chance to show he’s innocent of the 1957 murder of 7-year-old Sycamore girl Maria Ridulph at a hearing in April.

McCullough, a 77-year-old Seattle man, was convicted of the girl’s murder in 2012. However, his conviction was vacated in April 2016 after former DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack concluded that McCullough was in Rockford at the time of the girl’s disappearance and couldn’t have committed the crime.

On Monday, DeKalb County State’s Attorney Rick Amato asked a judge for more time to review the case. Amato, who unseated Schmack in the November election, said he hasn’t decided how he will proceed in the case.

One of issues Amato is looking into is whether he is bound by Schmack’s position in the case. Before losing the election, Schmack said he wouldn’t contest McCullough’s petition for a certificate of innocence.

Judge William Brady raised that issue during a hearing Monday with Amato, Assistant State’s Attorney James Walsh and Russell Ainsworth, an attorney with the Exoneration Project who is representing McCullough.

McCullough didn’t attend the hearing.

“Isn’t he pretty much stuck with the representations that have been made up to this point in this file?” the judge asked. Ainsworth said that’s how he understood the law. Amato said he was still researching the issue.

Amato will have to decide how to proceed by March 13, when both sides will be expected to give the judge a list of witnesses they plan to call at the ev-

Local group seeking to recognize DeKalb ‘Barbed Wire Baron’ Haish

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association is raising funds to commemorate one of the most well-known inventors and innovators in the county’s history, Jacob Haish.

The heritage association hopes to raise $4,200 to place a historical marker outside the DeKalb Public Library, which Haish helped to build through a $150,000 bequest in his will in 1928. The art-deco style Haish Memorial Library was completed in 1931. The building, with its limestone facade, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

“I think what is significant about this marker is that it will provide a lasting tribute to [Haish] in a place where a lot of the public will see it and constantly be reminded not only of what Haish did as far as contributions to barbed wire, but also how community-minded he was,”

DAAHA spokesman Larry Mix said.

“Here is somebody who is not only an inventive genius but civic-minded and we, as a community, have a lot to be thankful for because of his efforts.”

As of Monday, the nonprofit organization had collected about $500.

Mix said that in order to dedicate the marker in June, the group would have to meet its fundraising goal by April.

Haish was one of DeKalb’s three Barbed Wire Barons, along with Joseph T. Glidden and Isaac L. Ellwood.

Haish held patents for some types of barbed wire and was among the first to develop ways to mass-produce it.

Jessi LaRue, a Haish descendant who operates a blog to raise awareness for the project, said Haish’s work is often overshadowed in DeKalb by Glidden, who received the first patent for barbed wire in 1874, and Ellwood, Glidden’s business partner whose DeKalb mansion is now a museum.

Mix said this would be the seventh marker his organization has dedicated toward agricultural innovators, and added the group is working on honoring DeKalb Swine Breeders with a marker in September.

“Our purpose is to get the community connected to its tremendous heritage of agricultural innovations that have contributed to what DeKalb and Sycamore are today,” Mix said. “There will probably be several more markers in the future as we want to work with the state historical society to help people get connected with this great heritage.”

His wife, Sis, and he were proprietors of the Coast to Coast hardware store in Sycamore for 26 years after working in construction and building bridges in Chicago for 15 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Virginia “Sis” Hepker. He is also survived by his son, Eric (Dana) of Erie, Colorado; and his sons, David (Lisa), Brooks (Becky) and Darrin (Theresa) all of Sycamore, Illinois. His grandchildren include Stewart, Shawn, Tira, Samantha, Alyssa and Isabella Hepker, and cousins Carol and Fred

Horstman of Barnes, Wisconsin. He also leaves behind his faithful dog, Lucy.

He is preceded in death by two sons, prior to their birth; his mother, Leta Oliphant Hepker; his grandparents, brother and sisters-inlaw; and his beloved dogs Laddie and Baron.

CHICAGO – Activists who say too many poor people are unfairly languishing in U.S. jails because they can’t afford to post cash bail are increasingly deploying a new tactic: bailing out strangers.

Community groups are collecting donations from individuals, churches, cities and other organizations in more than a dozen cities, including New York, Chicago, Seattle and Nashville, to bail out indigent prisoners. Although many bail funds are still in their infancy, they’ve freed several thousand people in the last few years, and the number is growing.

So far, the overwhelming majority of defendants still show up for court even when they have no money on the line, according to the groups. Once free, the defendants are better able to fight their case, often leading to charges being dropped or reduced.

“Many, many people are having their lives ruined pre-trial because they can’t afford to get out of jail,” said Max Suchan, who co-founded the Chicago Community Bond Fund, which had bailed out 50 people as of December.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on Monday fired Sally Yates, the acting attorney general and a Democratic appointee, after she refused to defend in court his controversial refugee and immigration ban.

The extraordinary public clash over Trump’s most consequential policy decision to date laid bare the discord and dissent surrounding the executive order, which temporarily halted the entire U.S. refugee program and banned all entries from seven Muslim-majority nations for 90 days.

The firing came hours after Yates directed Justice Depart- Sally Yates ment attorneys not to defend the executive order, saying she was not convinced it was lawful or consistent with the agency’s “obligation to always seek justice and stand for what is right.”

In a statement, Trump said Yates had “betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States.” He named longtime federal prosecutor Dana Boente as Yates’ replacement.

Yates’ abrupt decision reflected the dissent over the order, with administration officials moving to distance themselves from the policy.

As protests erupted at airports over the weekend and confusion disrupted travel around the globe, some of Trump’s top advisers and fellow Republicans privately noted they were not

consulted about the policy.

At least three top national security officials – Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly and Rex Tillerson, who is awaiting confirmation to lead the State Department – have told associates they were not aware of details of the directive until around the time Trump signed it. Leading intelligence officials also were left largely in the dark, U.S. officials said.

Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that despite White House assurances that congressional leaders were consulted, he learned about the order in the media.

Other parts of Trump’s administration were voicing dissent Monday. A large group of American diplomats circulated a memo voicing their opposition to the order, which temporarily halted the entire U.S. refugee program and banned all entries from seven Muslim-majority nations for 90 days.

In a startlingly combative response, White House spokesman Sean Spicer challenged those opposed to the measure to resign.

“They should either get with the program or they can go,” Spicer said.

The blowback underscored Trump’s tenuous relationship with his own national security advisers, many of whom he met for the first time during the transition, as well as with the government bureaucracy he now leads.

While Trump outlined his plan for temporarily halting entry to the U.S. from countries with terror ties during the campaign, the confusing way in which it finally was crafted stunned some who have joined his team.

QUEBEC CITY – A French Canadian known for far-right, nationalist views was charged Monday with six counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder over the shooting rampage at a Quebec City mosque that Canada’s prime minister called an act of terrorism against Muslims.

Suspect Alexandre Bissonnette made a brief court appearance and did not enter a plea in the attack that left six people dead during evening prayers Sunday. Wearing a white prisoner jump suit, his hands and feet shackled, he stared down at the floor and fidgeted, but did not speak.

The 27-year-old suspect, who has espoused support for the French farright party of Marine Le Pen and had liked U.S. President Donald Trump on his Facebook page, was known to those who monitor extremist groups in Quebec, said François Deschamps, an official with a refugee advocacy group. “It’s with pain and anger that we learn the identity of terrorist Alexandre Bissonnette, unfortunately known to many activists in Quebec for taking nationalist, pro-Le Pen and anti-feminist positions at Laval University and

six dead, 19 people were wounded – all men. Of the five victims who remained hospitalized, two were in critical condition, authorities said. The dead ranged in age from 39 to 60.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard both characterized the attack as a terrorist act, which came amid heightened tensions worldwide over Trump’s travel ban on seven Muslim countries.

Le Pen, leader of the National Front in France, is known for her anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant positions and has won the endorsement and admiration of white supremacists.

Canada is generally welcoming toward immigrants and all religions, but the French-speaking province of Quebec has had a long-simmering debate about race and religious accommodation. The previous separatist government of the province called for a ban on ostentatious religious symbols, such as the hijab, in public institutions.

Trudeau said in Parliament the victims were targeted simply because of their religion and spoke directly to the more than 1 million Muslims who live in Canada, saying, “We are with you.”

“Thirty-six million hearts are breaking with yours,” Trudeau said. “Know that we value you.”

In today’s world of social media, it’s difficult to not be influenced by what we see from our friends and those we are around regularly. However, believe it or not, they don’t always have all of the details correct.

When many of us were younger, we probably played the game telephone where one person tells someone a piece of information and they tell the person next to them then they tell the next person and so on until it goes to the end of the line. Often times the message isn’t the same as what was originally told based on a variety of reasons – what they heard, how they said it, how good they are at remembering information, personal knowledge, etc.

The same holds true today and with social media as information goes across the country (actually the world) in minutes.

This incorrect information then becomes fact without any verification behind it. Then people share it at meetings, social events, electronically and through word of mouth until it almost becomes a fact and oftentimes it’s not true or at least not

War on NAFTA will end badly Hostility to supposedly bad trade deals was a main theme of President Donald Trump’s campaign, and he seems to mean business: Not only has he withdrawn the U.S. from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, but he also confirmed his intention to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement. His exact plans for NAFTA, however, aren’t clear.

NAFTA could stand some improvement. The problem is every way to make it better would, from Trump’s point of view, make it worse. That’s why his apparent sincerity is so disturbing.

America’s trade pact with Mexico and Canada reshaped all three economies, creating a highly integrated and competitive economic zone. The evidence is clear that, in the aggregate, this helped American workers – and not just because NAFTA and other free-trade agreements make goods cheaper and promote U.S. exports. A subtler point is equally important: When a U.S. firm takes advantage of NAFTA by moving jobs abroad, those investments spur demand for workers at home.

This surprising and little-understood benefit isn’t theoretical speculation. On average, the evidence shows, when U.S. manufacturers create 100 new jobs in Mexico, they create roughly 250 new jobs at home. U.S. manufacturing employment has declined over the years – but, as one study of NAFTA puts it, more manufacturing jobs are lost from companies that don’t invest abroad. When U.S. companies build foreign plants, they not only hire more U.S. workers, they also invest and spend more on research and development – at home.

This striving for success in a connected global economy is disruptive: Some workers lose in the process, even as others (in larger numbers) gain.

So the U.S. needs a stronger social safety net, better schools, more support for training and worker mobility, subsidies for low-wage employment and other measures. Sheltering U.S. firms from competition with import barriers, or blocking their foreign investments with threats or other interventions, will make them less competitive – and make Americans overall worse off.

A true “America First” trade policy would combine help for the victims of disruption with efforts to promote, not restrict, international competition and improve U.S. competitiveness.

So by all means, Mr. President, feel free to continue to boast about being a tough negotiator, and to make tweaks to NAFTA while calling them radical changes. And take better care of workers hurt by the agreement. But make no mistake: NAFTA is working. Don’t ruin a good thing.

Russia strikes blow to women

Victims of domestic violence often are helpless to fight back, for reasons of fear, shame and feelings of defeat. A civilized society enacts laws to protect such vulnerable people. The decision by the Russian parliament to change the law to decriminalize some forms of domestic violence is wrong-headed and sends a message brutality in a family is legitimate.

On Friday, the Russian lower house of parliament, the State Duma, approved a bill that decriminalizes domestic battery for first-time offenders. Battery against a family member will be subject to administrative rather than criminal penalty if it does not cause serious medical harm.

Violations can be punished with a fine of up to 30,000 rubles or about $500, police custody of up to 15 days or compulsory community service of up to 120 hours.

Second-time offenses and those

causing serious medical harm still would be criminal violations and punishable by up to two years in prison. This came about because last summer, parliament decriminalized battery among strangers but not among family members, which remained a criminal matter. This irked some lawmakers and the Russian Orthodox Church. They felt it meant a parent could be punished more harshly for slapping a child than a neighbor. According to the Economist, the church said “reasonable and loving use of physical punishment is an essential part of the rights given to parents by God himself.”

The move fits a larger drive

by President Vladimir Putin and some of his allies to instill what they call traditional family values. There’s precious little data, but by all accounts, domestic violence remains a serious problem in Russian society. One Interior

Ministry estimate is 12,000 women are killed every year in assaults by their partners. But there are deep divisions over the issue. In Soviet times, the presence of the state was pervasive, and now some people say the state should keep its nose out of family matters. At the same time, there has been a growing grass-roots awareness, including a social media campaign in Russia and Ukraine last year under the hashtag “#IAmNotAfraidToSpeak.”

What’s most objectionable about the law is the broader message it sends: that a domestic assault that doesn’t break bones or result in a concussion – a beating that could be humiliating, painful and cause deep emotional damage to the victim – should bring little or no penalty from the state. It is hard to see how a healthy society benefits when the most vulnerable are left exposed.

Refusing to compromise, Rauner is risking a strike A year ago, Gov. Bruce Rauner broke off contract negotiations with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the largest union representing public service workers in state government. Since then he has refused all efforts by our union to renew negotiations in the hopes of finding common ground.

State employees are on the job every day, protecting kids, caring for veterans, keeping prisons secure, responding to emergencies and providing countless other services that Illinois residents rely on.

In contrast, from his earliest days as a candidate, Rauner has been fixated on confrontation, boasting he would “shut down” state government to “re-do” our union contract.

For the past year, instead of negotiating, he pushed for the power to unilaterally impose his own terms, including a blank check to outsource public services for private profit, as well as a 100 percent

It may be hard for a megamillionaire such as him to appreciate, but that kind of loss would do serious harm to the typical working family.

By refusing to negotiate, Rauner is forcing employees to make a deeply troubling choice: Live with the governor’s unfair terms or go out on strike.

State workers are doing everything possible to avoid that course.

We know how difficult and disruptive a strike would be for employees, our families and most of all the people we serve.

That’s why AFSCME recently

took the unprecedented step of publicly putting forward a new settlement framework that made very clear employees’ willingness to do their part to help address the state’s fiscal woes.

Under our framework, state employees would receive no increases in base wages for four years, while paying moderately higher health care premiums, co-pays and deductibles. And we emphasized our readiness to negotiate further on these and all other outstanding issues.

Unfortunately, within hours of our announcement, the governor’s representatives rejected this new framework, deriding it as “superficial” and making false claims about its cost. Once again they refused any further discussions with our union, continuing to ignore the voices of reason, including lawmakers from both parties, who urge Rauner to return to bargaining.

It’s clear that this standoff – as is the state budget he has held hostage

ever since taking office – is about putting the governor’s political agenda ahead of what’s best for the people of Illinois.

Starting this week, child protection workers, parole officers, nurse aides, forensic scientists, rehabilitation counselors and thousands of other state employees across Illinois will vote on whether to authorize their bargaining committee to call a strike.

But even as they do, we will continue to emphasize that it’s not too late for the governor to choose a better path. State workers want to move Illinois forward through compromise.

If Rauner insists on forcing conflict, then he must bear the responsibility for the results, including the threat of a statewide strike.

“From this day forward, it’s going to be only America first, America first,” Donald Trump proclaimed in his inaugural address. As has been his habit, he added to the prepared text the word “only” and employed the rhetorical device of repetition by repeating “America first.”

The phrase sticks in some critics’ craws. It was the name of a bipartisan organization opposed to U.S. aid to Britain in 1940 to ’41, and its leader, Charles Lindbergh, claimed that the main groups pushing America to war were “the British, the Jewish and the Roosevelt administration.”

The phrase “America first” in an inaugural address in, say, 1949 or 1953 would have been disturbing for many understandable reasons. But it doesn’t have any resonance for today’s voters.

In an earlier passage in his speech, Trump made clear what he had in mind. “At the center of this movement” – which brought him to the presidency – “is a crucial conviction, that a nation exists to serve its citizens.” Not people in other countries, not foreigners who are visitors or legal residents or would like to live here someday.

At many points in American history, that statement would have been unremarkable. Not so today. As scholar Walter Russell Mead writes in Foreign Affairs, “many Americans with cosmopolitan sympathies

DeKALB – Madison Hickey picked up the first all-around title of her prep career Saturday. Two days later, she added her second, with this one coming in a regional.

The DeKalb-Sycamore co-op sophomore finished with a 38.725, finishing ahead of teammate Aleah Leman’s 38.05 to win the DeKalb Regional on Monday.

“I feel absolutely amazing,” Hickey said. “I’ve worked so hard. The team has helped me so much. It’s just been a crazy time.”

The Barbs finished with a 149.2, well ahead of runner-up Oak Park-River Forest’s 134.8250. They dominated the podium, with four of the top five finishers in each of the individual events. They only had two gymnasts eligible for the allaround title in Hickey and Leman, and they finished first and second.

The team will compete again Feb. 8 at the Glenbard North Sectional with a trip to state on the line, and they’ll be going in with Hickey clicking on all cylinders.

“She’s in a zone, which is nice,” coach Andy Morreale said. “Her consistency keeps showing. Hopefully, she’ll stay in that zone. She just looks really confident. Just by watching her you can see how confident she looks.”

Hickey won the floor with a 9.55 and tied for first with Leman on the vault with a 9.7. She was third on the bars with a 9.475 and second on the beam with a 9.5. Leman slipped on her floor exercise and scored a 9.025, good for fifth. She won the bars with a 9.575 and the beam with a 9.7.

Leman’s beam win came after she slipped Saturday. Morreale said he’s not concerned with the miscues.

“I think we have nine days to come down a little bit, then come back up for sectionals,” Morreale said. “I think she’ll be fine.”

Slip-ups aside, Morreale said having Hickey and Leman at the top of the lineup makes things easier for the rest of the team, but he added that he’s impressed with how the other gymnasts

By the numbers: With Sam Perri out sick, the Barbs were down one of their rotational gymnasts but had others step up, Morreale said. Livi Morey was third in the vault (9.2) and fourth on the beam (8.925). Katelyn Nelson notched a 9.0 on the vault to take fifth, an 8.625 on the beam for another fifth, and a 9.125

Beyond the stats: Morreale said his top two gymnasts are going to install tougher routines in an attempt to boost

their scorers even higher, beginning in next week’s sectional.

They said it: “For going back-toback, I thought we did a great job,” Morreale said. “In a more physical event like floor, I thought we looked a little tired. But on beam we did well, but still counted two misses. So there’s still some wiggle room to raise our score and hit that 150.”

Up next: The Barbs earned a spot in the Glenbard North Sectional, which will be at 6 p.m. Feb. 8 in Carol Stream.

Gilbert helps Carthage stop skid W

The Carthage women’s basketball team snapped a four-game skid with a pair of wins last week. Bailey Gilbert had 13 points, 4 assists and 2 steals in a 73-62 home win Saturday against Augustana. The Sycamore graduate shot 3 for 5 from 3-point range.

In a 106-95 home win Wednesday against North Central, Gilbert had 18 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. The sophomore guard hit 5 of 8 3-pointers and helped pushed the Reds (10-8, 5-5 College Conference Illinois and Wisconsin) to .500 in conference play.

Onetime foes in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East, Gilbert and Caroline Heimerdinger met on the court in Carthage’s win against North Central. A junior guard from Kaneland, Heimerdinger had 2 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists for the Cardinals.

Northwestern dreaming of NCAA tourney berth

The Associated Press EVANSTON – Bryant McIntosh is close enough he can see it when he closes his eyes. They all can, up and down the coaching staff and throughout the roster. With every 3-pointer, every shutdown performance, they move one step closer to the sweetest of uncharted territory for Northwestern.

At long last, the NCAA Tournament.

The Wildcats have been playing men’s basketball for more than a century and never made it to the sport’s marquee event. But McIntosh and company look ready to take down that drought, brimming with confidence heading into the final stretch of their increasingly successful season.

“We feel we are really good, but we can be even better, which I think is scary,” McIntosh said. “Yeah, I mean that’s the fun part, going in each and every day and understanding what everyone thinks of this program and kind of allowing that to be a little bit of a fire in our bellies. ... We have to be different, like this, this is over. This isn’t the same Northwestern.”

When the Top 25 was released on Monday, Northwestern came in at No. 25 for its first appearance in the poll since the 2009-10 season. Coach Chris Collins and the Wildcats (18-4) also began the workweek all alone in third in the conference, just a half-game back of co-leaders Maryland and Wisconsin.

“They’re a good team,” Indiana coach Tom Crean said. “I mean, Chris is a great coach. I’ve said that every year I’ve been here; he’s a great coach with a great staff.”

Collins, a native of suburban Chicago, left his plum assistant job at Duke to replace Bill Carmody after he was fired in March 2013. The Wildcats improved their record in each of his first three years on the sideline, going from 14-19 for the 2013-14 team to 20-12 last season.

Scottie Lindsey leads this year’s team with 15.4 points a game, and McIntosh averages 12.8 points and a Big Tenbest 5.7 assists. Athletic forward Vic Law is healthy again after missing last season following left shoulder surgery, but the biggest key for Northwestern has been its stout defense.

“I just think we’re a tough-minded team,” Collins said. “In my first year,

we couldn’t score at all, so we had to play great defense. Then I thought the last two years, our youth, we got beat up a little bit, we had to figure out, playing a lot of young guys. I think this year, having veteran guys that kind of understand our principles, we are a function of each other on both ends of the floor. We are not a one-man band.”

The Wildcats held the Hoosiers to 32 percent shooting and turned 13 Indiana turnovers into 17 points. They lead the Big Ten in field-goal defense at 38.3 percent and allow 63.7 points a game, second only to Wisconsin in the conference.

“We’re so locked in our prep and that stuff carries over to the game,” fifth-year senior Sanjay Lumpkin said.

“Obviously when we’re scoring and everything, it’s great, but we know that we’re not always going to be shooting the ball well, and defense is what’s going to win you the game. Your defense can be consistent, it can always be there game in, game out.”

Next up is a trip to No. 23 Purdue on Wednesday night. The Wildcats also play consecutive games against the 10th-ranked Badgers and No. 17 Terrapins in mid-February that could help decide the Big Ten title.

Pursuit of division title intensifies down stretch

mlazerus@suntimes.com SAN JOSE, Calif. – Would it all have gone down differently last April had Game 7 between the Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues been held at the United Center instead of the Scottrade Center?

Would Joel Quenneville have been able to make a difference had he had the last change instead of Ken Hitchcock?

Would Brent Seabrook’s third-period shot received a friendly hometown bounce instead of clanging off both posts and skittering away?

We’ll never know. But that Game 7 served as a reminder that – although the Hawks have proved time and again that playoff seeding isn’t everything – it sure doesn’t hurt to have home-ice advantage in the postseason. And with 31 games left in the season, and with the Minnesota

Wild up four points with three games in hand on the second-place Hawks, it’s getting close to that time of year when you always need to keep one eye on the schedule, and one on the standings.

“Yeah, I think you start to,” Seabrook said Monday afternoon after the Hawks shook off Brent Seabrook any rust from the threeday All-Star break with a brief practice at SAP Center in San Jose. “It’s just a natural progression when the season starts to wind down and playoff races are heating up and everyone’s talking about it. But it’s the same message we’ve had all year. I might sound like a broken record every time I talk to you, but we’re focused on us. We can look at the standings all we want, but we’ve got to

play well and try to get as many points as we can.”

That starts with Monday’s game against the Pacific Division-leading Sharks, which begins a six-game road trip leading into the team’s six-day “bye week.” In fact, eight of the Hawks’ next nine games are on the road, including two trips to St. Paul to face the Wild. And until those two games, and until the Wild catch up in games played, it’ll be tough to get a real handle on the division race.

Quenneville certainly is paying attention, however. The Hawks’ coach always keeps tabs on the standings, and two third-period collapses in the past two games made his team’s late-season climb that much steeper.

“You’re aware of everything going on in the league and with your own game,” he said. “You value two points, and [we know] we have not many games left to

enhance the position we’re in.”

The good news for the Hawks is they have a sizable lead on Nashville (nine points back, but surging) and St. Louis (12 points back). The question isn’t whether they’ll make the playoffs, it’s whether they can win the division.

“Our main focus is trying to win our division and having home ice through the first and second round,” Seabrook said. “That’s a huge thing in our game.

But it’s also about playing our best hockey we can at the right point, when the playoffs start.”

Notes: Gustav Forsling, recalled from Rockford on Sunday, likely will play Tuesday against the Sharks. Michal Rozsival, who was hurt blocking a shot during Thursday’s practice, will be out two to three weeks. Artem Anisimov and Marcus Kruger were sick Monday and missed practice.

Rick Hahn doesn’t have to sit down for breakfast with the locals at a Bridgeport diner to know what aggravated White Sox fans have endured since he became the organization’s general manager.

All he has to do is sit down over a bowl of cereal with his kids at home.

“I got an 11-year-old,’’ Hahn, with a pained wince, said this weekend during SoxFest. “When the Cubs were up 6-2 in Game 7, he was so upset he couldn’t go to sleep. All he wanted to talk to me about was, ‘When are the White Sox going to be back in the playoffs and how?’

So I’ve got to answer questions in my own house that aren’t so easy.”

For the first time in a while, the Sox are taking the difficult route toward building a winner, eschewing patchwork fixes with an overhaul that will, if successful, likely take a minimum of three years. Hahn warned fans at SoxFest it could take more, saying a typical plan takes five.

As tough as four consecutive losing seasons and no postseason appearances since Hahn’s 11-year-old was a toddler in 2008 are, the majority of fans at SoxFest confirmed to the organization that they are willing to wait through the process that began with the unpleasant parting of Chris Sale, not to mention Adam Eaton. More tough goodbyes are in the works.

“I absolutely approve the rebuild,’’ said Kevin Pittman, 24, of Lansing, who

Losing fans is a risk chairman Jerry Reinsdorf must be prepared to take. The Sox in turn went all out promoting prospects at SoxFest, where fans seemed eager to meet new, highly rated prospects such as Yoan Moncada, Lucas Giolito and Michael Kopech.

“There is a clear plan and direction for the on-field product and our fans understand the process,’’ Boyer said.

“As Rick has stated, we are closer to the start of the process than the end, but this weekend our fans and media got to meet a number of the young guys and it created optimism.

“As for ticket sales I am cautiously optimistic. Our season ticket renewal is meeting expectations and our group and premium seating business is pacing as anticipated.’’

Promotions, giveaways, good food, relatively easy access to newly named Guaranteed Rate Field and affordable ticket pricing options always have carried much of the freight for bringing fans in. That certainly will be the case in 2017.

Nothing brings them in like a winning team, of course. That’s what everyone, from Hahn’s son to the fans in the upper deck, want.

Patience is the word. It’s going to take some time.

“We know there are difficult days ahead,’’ Hahn said.

“However, I think everything here understands what we’re trying to accomplish for the long term.’’

Even Patriots fans find it hard to root against ex-BC star

The Associated Press BOSTON – The enemies list is long in New England, and it grows with each tweet that dares to doubt Tom Brady’s supremacy or call coach Bill Belichick a cheater.

But there’s one opponent who has escaped the fury of the Foxborough fans, and even has a considerable amount of goodwill in the heart of New England. In fact, it’s hard to find any kind of animosity toward Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, who built his reputation – personally and professionally – at Boston College.

“It’s hard to think of anything bad to say about Matt,” said former BC sports information director Chris Cameron, who was in the athletic department when Ryan led the Eagles to a No. 2 ranking in The Associated Press poll in the middle of the 2007 season.

“I think there are many people at Boston College who are die-hard Patriots fans who are somewhat torn. But I can’t think of anyone who will wish any ill will on Matt Ryan.”

Peyton Manning is persona non grata in New England because he had the nerve to win a couple of Super Bowls.

His original team, the Indianapolis Colts, earned the Patriots’ ire for questioning whether the team’s footballs were properly inflated in a 2015 playoff game.

The Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets also were sucked into the two-year “Deflategate” scandal, drawing the wrath of the local fans. And don’t get the Foxborough Bros started on commissioner Roger Goodell, or on ESPN. But Ryan is the rare New England opponent who doesn’t inspire hatred in the area, even as he prepares to face the Patriots in the Super Bowl on Sunday.

At Boston College, a guard shack displays a poster of “Matty Ice,” the nickname Ryan picked up from his Eagles teammates for his ability to remain cool under pressure. In the athletic building, a case is filled with life-sized action shots of Ryan and some of the trophies he won: Johnny Unitas Award, Manning Award, Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year.

Around campus in the run-up to the Super Bowl, they’re telling stories about the humble but talented quarterback who was also a conscientious student and friend.

“He remembers people’s names.

He’s polite to them. There’s really no ego there that I’ve detected, but there’s confidence,” Cameron said. “He’s just a really nice, caring guy. He’s just got that ‘It’ factor.”

A Philadelphia native who was under-recruited coming out of high school as an option quarterback who also played baseball and basketball, Ryan led Boston College to that No. 2 ranking and finished in the top 10 in Heisman Trophy voting. BC finished 11-3 and No. 10 in the nation, beating Michigan State in the Champs Sports Bowl.

But when the Falcons took Ryan third overall in the 2008 NFL draft, Cameron found himself spending hours online responding to comments on an Atlanta newspaper website from fans who were disappointed with the pick.

“I’m not too sure that Atlanta knew too much about Matt,” Cameron said.

“I must have responded to 100 of them.

I just took it so personally. I must have typed ‘Just wait. Just wait. Just wait’ 100 times.”

Despite growing up in Kentucky – a Bengals fan “I guess,” he said – Cameron became a Patriots fan after living in the Boston area for more than a decade but also maintained an allegiance to former BC Eagles in the NFL. (BC linebacker Luke Kuechly played in the Super Bowl last year for the Carolina Panthers.)

Asked about the mixed loyalties in his former stomping grounds, Ryan said in Atlanta last week, “None of my friends have mixed loyalties,” emphasizing the word “my” and drawing a laugh from the assembled reporters.

Count Cameron among them.

“I am a Patriots fan, and I’m rooting for the Falcons. Solely because of Matt,” he said. “On a very personal level, to see someone that good of a person succeed at that level would be incredible.”

As for new treatments, some physicians and podiatrists offer laser treatment of toenail fungus. Although some patients report good results, reliable data about the longterm efficacy of laser treatment is scarce.

Dear Doctors: I had toenail fungus two years ago, and my doctor prescribed Lamisil.

It took a long time, but it worked. Now the fungus, which is so ugly, is back again. Why is it so hard to get rid of, and are there any new treatments available?

Dear Reader: Toenail fungus is fairly common, but that’s not much consolation to the 6 million or so people in the United States who have to put up with it. It’s an often-unsightly infection caused by a microscopic organism called a dermatophyte that lives beneath the toenail. More precisely, it colonizes the portion of the nail known as the matrix, which is underneath the cuticle.

Initial symptoms are a yellowish or brownish discoloration of the toenail. As the infection progresses, nails often become thickened, crumbly and malformed. Although the fungus affects the appearance of the nails, it actually lives on the layer directly beneath the toenail. That’s why it’s so difficult to treat.

Your nails are made up of keratin, a tough, fibrous protein. The same hard shell that protects your toes is giving shelter to the fungus. For topical medications to be successful in killing the fungus, they have to be able to reach it.

Anti-fungal creams and liquids are available, both in over-the-counter preparations and by prescription. But because nails are not porous, it’s difficult for the medication to reach the infection in concentrations great enough to kill the fungus. As a result, success rates for topical treatments are low.

Systemic medications, like the Lamisil your physician prescribed, take a more direct approach. You swallow the pill, it gets digested and the medication enters your bloodstream. Your circulatory system delivers the medication directly to the fungus living beneath your toenail and, in the bestcase scenario, kills it.

I firmly believe that North should respond two no-trump to show a balanced hand with 8 or more points.

Then, over three spades, North’s four-club control-bid promises spade support, the club ace and a good hand. Blackwood does the rest. But I accepted any sensible sequences for questions 2 and 3.

4. If West were the dealer with both sides vulnerable, what should he open? Five clubs -- sock it to ‘em, baby!

5. Look at the North hand. a.

South opens one spade; with the opponents silent, how should North plan the auction? He should invite game, either (in two-over-one) by responding one forcing no-trump and rebidding three spades, or (in Standard) by responding two clubs and rebidding a minimum number of spades. b. West opens one no-trump, and East raises to three no-trump.

What should North lead? Diamond three. This needs the least from partner (with luck, only the diamond king) to defeat the contract.

6. Look at the East hand. North opens one no-trump, and South raises to three no-trump. a. What should East lead? Probably the heart seven. b. What should he lead if West doubles three no-trump? Definitely the heart seven. c. West opens two spades, a weak two-bid. After North passes, what should East bid? Four no-trump would be my choice! But almost anything except pass.
