The future will copy Trump’s Twitter use POLL

One of the smartest things that Donald Trump does is get on Twitter and speak his mind. A lot of people aren’t used to it.

But decades from now, people studying how presidents communicated with the American people will cite Trump’s use of Twitter along with Theodore Roosevelt’s assembling of the Washington press corps, Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s radio “Fireside Chats,” Dwight D. Eisenhower’s pioneering daily press briefings, and so on. All of those presidents seized the opportunity that technology gave them to address the public in a new way, with great success.

Social media is an important development in mass communication, and Trump is the first president to use it not in a stilted, self-promotional way, but as regular people do. Trump voices his opinions through his @realDonaldTrump Twitter account, and speaks his mind in a distinctive way.

On Friday morning, the talk was about a canceled meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, who has said he’s dead-set against his country paying a nickel for Trump’s planned border wall. Trump tweeted this message: “Mexico has taken advantage of the U.S. for long enough. Massive trade deficits & little help on the very weak border must change, NOW!” That prompted Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim to say that “Twitter is not a way to negotiate.”

Oh? It seems to me that Trump has made his position clear. It’s simple enough to fit into 140 characters. Whether or not you agree with it, it’s obvious to citizens everywhere the stance he’s going to take on Mexico and the need for better border controls.

The cast of “Hidden Figures” rocketed to the Screen Actors Guild top award at a fiery, protestladen ceremony that was dominated by defiance over President Trump’s sweeping immigration ban.

An uplifting drama about African-American mathematicians who aided NASA’s 1960s space race, “Hidden Figures” was the surprise best-ensemble winner Sunday night at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium. With the Oscar front-runner “La La Land” not nominated in the category, most expected a contest between “Moonlight” or “Manchester by the Sea.”

community of nations, and no wall can change that. Erecting a physical barrier seems like a simplistic (and expensive) solution to a complex problem.

Disagree though I may with Trump on this point, I don’t wonder where he’s coming from.

I can read his thoughts about this issue and many, many others – of his choosing – on Twitter. So can 22.5 million other people around the world who follow him, and countless others who learn about these dispatches through traditional media.

Trump will be only the first in a succession of future politicians who will manage their message to the people in this way. Maybe not all of them will end messages with exclamations such as “Sad!” “Apologize!” or “NOW!”, but they will speak out and do so more plainly than their forebears did.

Social media will enable Trump and future presidents – really, leaders at all levels of government who can attract a large enough following – to take the bully pulpit to a new level.

Communicating in this way is the norm for more and more people. However else he might be remembered, Trump will be considered a pioneer in using this new form of media to bring his message to the public – 140 characters at a time.

‘Star Wars’ STEM class captures kids’ imagination, dreams

news@daily-chronicle.com Amelia Weingarz, 8, couldn’t think of anything she’d rather do on a weekend than program her own droid, marvel at 3-D images through a hologram projector and create her very own lightsaber.

Amelia was among the students who learned all about the science behind the “Star Wars” films at Northern Illinois University STEM Outreach program’s Saturday class.

“We programmed our robot, and it could go around in infinite circles,” said Amelia, a second-grader at North Grove Elementary School in Sycamore. “I’ve always done lots of STEM things, and I like ‘Star Wars.’

I’m having such a great time, and I can’t wait to build and design the light saber.”

Amelia was one of 20 children who attended the sold-out class Saturday.

STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering and math, and NIU’s STEM Outreach program offers several classes throughout the year. The “Star Wars” theme made this class one of the best-attended, STEM educator Jeremy Benson said. “ ‘Star Wars’ is a big thing culturally right now. Everyone loves ‘Star Wars,’ and we’re using the allure of it to get kids thinking about STEM fields,” Benson said. “There are a lot of emerging jobs in STEM fields, and it’s a good idea to be literate of science and technology in general.

Having a basic understanding of how things work is a responsibility for all of us.

“Kids need to be ready to operate in a world where there will be even more technology.”

Adam Hearnsberger, 10, was curious to learn about robots and how they worked in the “Star Wars” movies. The home-schooled fifth-grader said he likes being able to make his own droid work.

“I really like science. I find it interesting to learn how stuff works,” Adam said. “I’ve never made a hologram before, and I’m really excited to do that.”

Vincent Tripoli, 9, had attended other STEM Saturday classes, but he was really looking forward to this one because he’s such a big fan of “Star Wars.”

Joseph Brown, 8, of DeKalb already knows he wants to be an engineer someday. The second-grader at Brooks Elementary School said Saturday’s class was his third STEM class, and it already was his favorite.

“We can actually program stuff, and you can make a Lego robot move or do whatever you want using a computer,” he said. “I really want to build a lightsaber because that’s my favorite thing about ‘Star Wars.’ ” Joseph’s father, Larry Brown, said he’s always looking for STEM-related activities for his son because Joseph loves science.

“This is really good for him. I’d rather have him be here and learn with the hands-on approach than Google things at home,” Brown said.

Brianna Van Garsse, 10, was having some trouble making her robot move, but nonetheless, she was having fun trying to make it work.

“I wanted to learn how to program my own robot because I like coding and science,” said Brianna, a fourth-grader at Southeast Elementary School in Sycamore. “I want to be a scientist when I get older. I’ve been to two other STEM classes here, and they’re very cool.”

Brianna was one of several girls in the class, and STEM Outreach student worker Jasmine Carey was happy to see that. It’s important to get more girls interested in STEM fields,

Carey said.

“The STEM fields have been male-dominated for a long time, and we want girls to understand that they’re just as capable. We want to get them started early,” she said. “Younger kids tend to shy away from math and science because of fear or not fully understanding them, and it’s good for them to get comfortable with it. We create a relaxed environment with fun activities.”

Science is one of Kayleigh Kerman’s favorite subjects in school, and she couldn’t wait for the class because it combined her love of science and “Star Wars.”

“This is cool because you can tell the droids what you want them to do and they do it,” the fifth-grader at Wasco Elementary School said. “It’s fun to experiment with new things and see how things react.”

NIU student sues firefighter accused in fatal DUI crash

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A 23-year-old Northern Illinois University student injured in a fatal crash near DeKalb is suing a firefighter charged with aggravated drunken driving in connection with the collision.

Evan Cortez, 23, of Elgin, was in the passenger seat of a car John A. w i t h J o h n a t h o n R . Yanni III Ode, 18, of DeKalb at the time of the crash. Ode, a senior at DeKalb High School, was killed in the Jan. 17 crash on Route 38 east of Peace Road in DeKalb County.

Police said John A. Yanni III, 25, of St. Charles, was driving a pickup truck west on Route 38 when his vehicle crossed the highway’s center line. After sideswiping one oncom-

ing vehicle, he collided head-on with Ode and Cortez, police have said.

Cortez was taken to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford with serious injuries after the crash.

The lawsuit, filed this week in Kane County, claims Cortez suffered permanent injuries. It doesn’t detail the nature of the injuries.

“Evan is blessed to have survived this horrific crash, but his injuries are severe and permanent. He faces a very, very long road to recovery,” Craig Brown, a partner at St. Charles law firm Meyers & Flowers, said in a statement. “We are working closely with Evan and his family and have committed the full resources of our firm to help him obtain justice while he focuses on his physical and emotional recovery.”

Cortez underwent multiple surgeries at the hospital. He recently was transferred from the hospital to a rehabilitation facility and hasn’t

had a chance to pay his respects to Ode or his family.

“He’s been mourning the loss of his best friend from a hospital bed,” Brown said.

Cortez’s recovery could take many months, but “he may never make a full recovery,” his attorney said.

Yanni, a firefighter and paramedic at Fox River & Countryside Fire/ Rescue District, has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence and reckless homicide. If convicted, he could face three to 14 years in prison.

The lawsuit claims Yanni was negligent for driving while under the influence of alcohol and is responsible for the crash.

It seeks compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, and “loss of normal life.” It doesn’t seek a specific dollar amount.

A case management conference in the lawsuit is set for April 12.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Connie Childers and Debra St. John; two grandsons, Michael Corsivo and Kellan Tome; one granddaughter, Chris Corsivo; one brother, Richard Clark; and her parents.

LELAND – In effort to offer students more opportunities both in and out of the classroom, school officials at Leland School District 1 are looking into options for consolidation with neighboring districts.

Leland Superintendent Jodi Moore said officials have reached out to bordering districts including Indian Creek School District 425, Earlville School District 9, Somonauk School District 432 and Serena School District 2.

Leland School District includes Leland High School and Leland Elementary School and had a total enrollment of 267 students for the 2015-16 school year,

according to IllinoisReportCard.com.

Moore said the idea for consolidation came from a feasibility study last spring.

“At first the board was hesitant,” she said. “They thought we’d be giving up being part of a small school.”

Moore said board members have stayed open-minded to the potential benefits of consolidation, such as sharing services, course offerings and sports.

“The board is being realistic and looking for options to give the best education with the tax dollars from the community,” she said.

Moore said the process has opened up valuable dialogue with other districts about things like state funding

and their vision for their schools in the next 10 years.

“The only reason [board members] are looking to the feasibility study is because they want to know we’re offering the best to students in Leland,” she said. “Some consolidations are done to save money, but we know that doesn’t always happen.”

Indian Creek Superintendent Chad Willis said his district would establish a committee to meet with Leland school officials to discuss what a consolidation might look like. The committee is scheduled to discuss feasibility options at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Indian Creek High School Library, 506 S. Shabbona Road.

“We will meet with Leland to en-

courage communication and see if it is in our mutual interests,” Willis said.

“We’re exploring options at this point and trying to learn more information.”

He said they would talk about the visions of both districts to determine if their educational and longterm goals align.

Indian Creek School District had a 2015-16 enrollment of 723 students, while Earlville School District had 442; Somonauk School District had 808, and Serena School District had 666, according to IllinoisReportCard.com.

Moore said the districts are in the process of communicating ideas to figure out which consolidation options would most benefit students, and no decision has been made yet.

STATE Illinois fails to support disability services, report finds

SPRINGFIELD – A federal court monitor is criticizing Illinois for failing to ensure that people with developmental disabilities receive adequate support within their communities for a second year in a row.

The monitor’s annual report, issued last week, says a lack of state funding to raise caregiver wages has created unprecedented shortages of workers who assist developmentally disabled residents when they move out of institutions and into apartments or group homes. The services include everything from eating and hygiene to learning life skills.

The report expanded on a similar finding last year. But the Illinois Department of Human Services said in a statement that it disagrees with the conclusion. The agency insists that the state continues to meet requirements laid out in a federal decree issued in 2011 after civil rights groups sued Illinois for failing to comply with a 1999 Supreme Court ruling that unjustified institutionalization constitutes discrimination.

The decree details what Illinois must do to provide community support for the developmentally disabled.

Springfield museum to open exhibit on New Philadelphia

SPRINGFIELD – A temporary museum exhibit is to open in Springfield showcasing New Philadelphia – the first U.S. town to be founded and registered by an African-American.

The exhibit will be at the Springfield and Central Illinois African American History Museum through the end of July. The Springfield State Journal-Register reported that the exhibit is a partnership between the Illinois State Museum and the African American History Museum.

The issue will be discussed when plaintiffs, including the American Civil Liberties Union and Equip for Equality, meet with state officials before a Feb. 10 court date when the parties next make their case to a judge.

State funding for wage increases stalled almost a decade ago at about $9 an hour, which would place many

caregivers and their families below the federal poverty level. Medicaid matches state wage rates, but states must raise wages first to secure a higher federal contribution.

“We can’t compete even with fast food restaurants or retail,” said Kim Zoeller, president of the Ray Graham Association, a DuPage County-based community service provider. “It’s truly a crisis.”

The report commends the state for reaching benchmark goals for the

VANDALIA – A former state Capitol in southern Illinois once again will welcome visitors to celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. The Vandalia Statehouse State Historic Site will offer music, refreshments and presentations about the 16th president on Feb. 11. Admission is free.

The Vandalia Statehouse was the center of Illinois’ government from 1836 to 1839.

It was the fourth Illinois statehouse and is the oldest surviving capitol building in the state. Lincoln served in the Vandalia Statehouse when he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives. The building was placed on the National Register of

Chicago police chief says he’s had kidney offers

CHICAGO – Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said some of his own officers and citizens alike have offered to donate a kidney to him since he disclosed that he’s on a kidney transplant waiting list.

After nearly fainting at a Friday news conference, Johnson announced that he’s had a kidney condition for decades and now is awaiting a transplant.

He said Saturday that since he made that disclosure, citizens have called 911 to give their information for possibly becoming a kidney donor for him.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Johnson said those kind offers have given him

number of people awaiting services who’ve left institutions or family homes to live on their own or in group residences. But it found Illinois out of compliance because state government has not budgeted sufficient funds to guarantee that disabled people integrating into community life receive personalized care that addresses more than basic needs.

Court orders issued last year ensured the state continued funding service providers at 2015 levels. But federal monitor Ronnie Cohn said these funds were not enough to combat a staffing shortage.

The shortage left providers in 2016 up to 30 percent understaffed and created turnover rates as high as 70 percent, which resulted in uprooted routines, overtime shifts for remaining staff and fewer resources devoted to activities that help disabled people engage with their community.

The report also referenced a Chicago Tribune investigation that found more than a thousand cases of abuse and neglect in state-funded group homes.

But Cohn told The Associated Press in an interview that ensuring quality care goes beyond more closely monitoring providers.

“Even the best providers with the best of intentions can’t manufacture money to keep people working,” Cohn said. “When the money stops moving, it creates problems.”

NEW YORK – President Donald Trump’s immigration order sowed more chaos and outrage across the country Sunday, with travelers getting detained at airports, panicked families searching for relatives and protesters marching against the sweeping measure that was blocked by several federal courts. Attorneys struggled to determine how many people had been affected so far by the rules, which Trump said Saturday were “working out very nicely.”

But critics described widespread confusion and said an untold number of travelers were being held in legal limbo because of ill-defined procedures. Others were released. Lawyers manned tables at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to help families whose loved ones had been detained, and about 150 Chicago-area lawyers showed up at O’Hare Airport after getting an email seeking legal assistance for travelers.

“We just simply don’t know how many people there are and where they are,” said Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Immigrants’ Rights Project.

Advocates for travelers said the chaos is likely to continue. The executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, Marielena Hincapie, said “this is just the beginning.”

“We’re really in a crisis mode, a constitutional crisis mode in our country, and we’re going to need everyone,” she said. “This is definitely one of those all-hands-on-deck moments.”

On Sunday talk shows, White House officials defended Trump’s actions.

“I can’t imagine too many people out there watching this right now think it’s unreasonable to ask a few more questions from someone traveling in and out of Libya and Yemen before being let loose in the United States,” White House chief of staff Reince Priebus said.

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway described the changes as “a small price to pay” to keep the nation safe.

By Sunday evening, officials said nearly all of those who had been detained were free or soon would be, but the status of some travelers was unclear. The released included nine people held at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings’ office said.

The people affected included a woman who was sent back to Saudi Arabia after traveling to Indiana to care for her cancer-stricken mother; a family physician who has lived in the U.S. for two decades who was held for nine hours; and a Minneapolis woman about to become a U.S. citizen who was questioned for 12 hours.

Meanwhile, protests continued across the country Sunday, from smaller airports such as Rapid City Regional Airport in South Dakota to one of the nation’s busiest, Hartfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Demonstrations first erupted Saturday, a day after Trump signed the order banning travel to the U.S. by citizens of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia or Yemen. The president also suspended the U.S. refugee program for four months.

Rauner makes generous offer The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees members across Illinois will begin voting Monday on whether to give their leaders the authority to strike.

We urge them to vote no.

Illinois’ largest state employee union, AFSCME, has been at an impasse with Gov. Bruce Rauner over the terms of a new contract that has been under negotiation since July 2015.

The union that represents 38,000 state workers wants pay increases and other benefits that would cost Illinois taxpayers an additional $3 billion over the life of the four-year contract.

More reasonably, Rauner wants to freeze the salaries of state workers who are the highest paid in the country when adjusted for cost of living. He also wants employees to pay a higher premium toward health benefits while also giving them more options. Workers currently receive what the Affordable Care Act categorizes as a platinum plan, but they pay a bronze premium rate while taxpayers pick up the rest. Under Rauner’s plan, employees could continue to pay a bronze premium but, like private sector employees, they would receive a bronze plan.

The governor’s offer also includes bonuses for high performers and those who show up to work regularly instead of across-the-board pay hikes that award everyone equally, regardless of performance. Rauner wants the state to be able to test employees for drugs or alcohol if there is reasonable suspicion an employee showed up to work under the influence. And he wants overtime pay to kick in after a 40-hour workweek instead of the current 37.5 hours.

Rauner and 20 other state unions already have agreed to similar contract terms.

Given Illinois’ fiscal condition – public pensions underfunded by almost $130 billion; a backlog of unpaid bills totaling more than $11 billion; a state budget crisis that has left Illinois’ social service agencies and its most vulnerable residents in peril; a population so overburdened by taxes that tens of thousands are fleeing annually – Rauner’s offer is generous.

But AFSCME’s leadership wants more from taxpayers and less accountability for its membership.

So it has asked its members for the ability to call a strike. The vote lasts from Monday through Feb. 19. A “yes” vote doesn’t necessarily mean a strike will happen, but we urge members to vote “no” for the sake of all of Illinois.

We also urge Rauner to hold strong to his contract terms. For the state to have a chance to get out of its current fiscal mess, it needs to change the way it conducts business. Holding firm on union contracts is one of those necessary changes.

Imagine you have been invited to a private board meeting and celebration of John Deere & Co. The founder of the company is retiring and handing the plow to his son Charles. John Deere reflects on the history of his self-scouring plows, shares some of his personal struggles, and then turns to the future and the great changes in agriculture that he foresees in the vision of his

son, who is about to transform the company and the future of farming.

Historian, author and actor Brian “Fox” Ellis, in character as John Deere, will cover a century of agricultural history and then lead a discussion on the future of farming.

Raising issues such the pros and cons of agriculture versus agribusiness, the roles of technology and mechanization, and the significance of small family farms, centennial farms and community-supported agriculture, this program promises to engage the audience in a complex conversation about the direction the ongoing efforts to feed the world might take.

Turning the conventional question-and-answer session format on its head, a substantial portion of this presentation will consist of John Deere

asking the members of the audience questions about their family roots in agriculture and where they think the future will lead.

The program will be at St. Mary’s Memorial Hall, 322 Waterman St. in Sycamore. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Faulkner earned a Master of Information Science degree from City University, London, England, and has more than 10 years of experience as a professional librarian.

Emily She previously served as Faulkner the cultural and civic engagement librarian at the Chicago Public Library where she was responsible for managing more than 30 partnerships with educational institutions, museums, nonprofit organizations and city and state agencies, as well as designing programs by authors, entertainers and local experts for 80 branch libraries within the city of Chicago.

Faulkner began her role in DeKalb on Jan. 16, succeeding Dee Coover, who retired after serving as director for the past 10 years.

Learn who really hibernates at program DAILY CHRONICLE The University of Illinois Extension Wee Naturalist program for Saturday, Feb. 4, will be all about hibernation and the animals who conquer winter by simply sleeping through the season.

The Wee Naturalist program is held the first Saturday of the month at 10:30 a.m. for children ages 5 to 7.

The program is held at the Natural Resource Education Center in Russell Woods Forest Preserve located one mile west of Genoa on Route 72.

This month the group will talk about the infamous

groundhog and other animals who may or may not hibernate in the winter. The program will include a hibernation station in the lesson and activity, Master Naturalist Sarah Tobias will read a book about a particular groundhog, and the children will make a groundhog craft and, weather permitting, take a hike in Russell Woods. Children can bring their passport to get it stamped and new participants will receive a passport.

Each child needs to be with an adult or guardian for the program. The fee is $3 per child and no charge for the attending adult. To register, call 815-784-2000.

Hickey’s 1st all-around win helps Barbs take conference

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Madison Hickey hadn’t won an all-around title in her prep career.

After Saturday, the sophomore on the DeKalb-Sycamore co-op team can call herself an all-around conference champion.

Hickey finished with a 38.575, beating senior teammate Aleah Leman’s 38.175 to claim the all-around title at the Upstate 8 Conference Tournament at DeKalb High School. Leman was well ahead of third-place finisher Emma Grace Redmond-Mattuci from the St. Charles co-op.

“It feels absolutely amazing,” Hickey said. “We’ve all worked so hard. ...

We just ended up with a really great day.”

The Barbs won the conference title and finished the meet with 149.2 points, ahead of runner-up Geneva’s

143.575. They won’t have long to rest, as they host a regional tournament Monday.

Coach Andy Morreale said the Barbs – who haven’t lost a meet this year – feel very confident heading into the regional, which starts at 6 p.m., even with barely 48 hours rest.

“If it was a tough regional, then, yes, that would be a tough turnaround,” Morreale said.

Hickey said the team is in a good position heading into the regional.

“Me and the whole team are feeling great,” Hickey said. “We’re really tired, but (Sunday) we’re going to rest and Monday is going to be a whole new day. We’re just going to go out there and try to win.

Hickey will head into the tourney as the conference champ, taking first or second in every event. In the two events she was second, she trailed only Leman.

“It’s a great time to be peaking for

her,” Morreale said. “She’s had great practices up until now. Her consistency has been phenomenal. We knew this was coming.”

Leman won the bars and floor, and was second to Hickey in the vault. On the balance beam, Leman missed the beam completely and fell. Even with the mistake, she finished with a 9.05 and tied for seventh with teammate Samantha Keating.

Morreale said the miscue was nothing more than a fluke.

“It wasn’t as if she hit and had a big bobble. Her foot just missed,” Morreale said. “She kind of took her eyes off the beam. She’s the type of person if she has a mistake, she’ll buckle down and get it the next time.”

By the numbers: Hickey won the vault with a 9.725 and the beam with a 9.55. She was second in the bars (9.55) and floor (9.75). Leman won the bars (9.675) and the floor (9.775) and was second in the vault (9.675). The Barbs had

two other medalist – Lauren Leman was third on the bars with a 9.5, and Kaitlyn Nelson was fifth on the floor with a 9.25.

Beyond the stats: Kayla Fowler, while competing in the floor exercise, fell to the ground after a landing and had to end her routine, being helped off the mat. She was wearing a knee brace on her left knee from a previous ACL tear, and Morreale said she reinjured it, although he did not know the extent. He said he doesn’t expect her to compete Monday.

They said it: “We have to keep our mental status nice and steady,” Hickey said about the team’s focus level.

“We have a lot of ups and downs sometimes, but I think this team has gone through so much that we’re just going to do really good.”

Up next: The team hosts a regional at 6 p.m. Monday. The only other Upstate 8 team competing in it will be the U-46 co-op.

“At the top of the 1-3-1, she’s our main defender,” Galauner said. “She stops the ball when it comes down. She always gets tips at the top. It makes my life easier because she makes them lob it over. Since I’m at the bottom of the 1-3-1, it makes it a lot easier to get to the corner when she’s making them lob it over.”

As she’s frequently done this season, Anderson also played the entire game. Henkel said that Anderson – not Galauner or Nay – leads the team in minutes and that she doesn’t come out unless he “absolutely needs” to take her out.

Against Dixon (18-7 overall, 5-3 Big Northern Conference) on Saturday, Anderson picked up her second foul with 6:04 remaining in the second quarter and looked over to the bench.

“Be smart,” Henkel told her, pointing to his head.

Anderson nodded.

She only picked up her third with

6:44 remaining in the fourth quarter.

“It’s a benefit for her, Julie, Jesi – they’ve all been pulled up as underclassmen,” Henkel said. “Amanda got big minutes for us as a sophomore.

She’s been in situations before, due to logging a lot of minutes in her high school career. That’s just a luxury you have with an experienced player.

They play smart, and they know time, score and how to play that situation.”

The Cogs (16-6, 4-3) had started the season off strong from the foul line, Henkel said, before seeing a slide in the percentages as the season wore on.

On Saturday, Genoa-Kingston went 16 for 19 – with Anderson going a perfect 5 for 5.

“We started the year shooting about 70 percent from the line as a team, which is pretty good,” Henkel said.

“As of late, we’ve been going through a big dry spell from the free-throw line, not shooting as well as we’re capable of. It’s been emphasized a lot in practice, so it’s nice to see us hit some.

The moment’s bigger out here than it is from 3 to 5 [p.m.] with nobody else in the gym.”

The DeKalb-Sycamore co-op finished with 290 points, edging host Sterling.

The Barbs won five events, with Gavin Anderson taking first in the 200yard freestyle (one minute, 55.85 seconds) and the 500 free (5:10.22).

Nathan Braun (55.35 in the 100 breaststroke), Riley Lohse (23.31 in the 50 free) and David Ruetten (2:21.74 in the 200 individual medley) also picked up conference titles for the Barbs.

The Genoa-Kingston dance team raised its leading score from the preliminary round, but two other teams passed the Cogs on Saturday as they took third at the IHSA Competitive Dance State Tournament in Bloomington.

The Cogs finished with a 92.46, while Morris was second with a 93.20 and Highland won with a 94.72 in Class 1A. Sycamore posted a 87.08 to take ninth.

GENOA – Julie Galauner and Jesi Nay are the top two scorers in Genoa-Kingston girls basketball history.

Against Dixon on Saturday, however, it was defensive specialist Amanda Anderson who supplied the offense in the closing minutes of the game for the Cogs.

Anderson made a pair of free throws and had a three-point play in the span of less than a minute to help the Cogs beat Dixon, 47-42, on Senior Night.

“That was a pretty big five points

by Amanda,” Genoa-Kingston coach Kyle Henkel said. “She usually anchors us defensively, gets us extra possessions and tries to disrupt what the other team’s doing. She does a great job at that. It’s part of the reason we were able to find her is that Julie and Jesi draw as much attention as they do. Amanda went to the right spot and hit a big shot and hit some free throws down the stretch. That was huge.”

Anderson finished with 11 points,

and those five in the closing minutes were a part of a critical 10-0 run that turned a 39-36 deficit with less than four minutes left into a 46-39 lead with 54.6 seconds remaining.

After a 3-pointer by Galauner – who finished with a game-high 21 points – put the Cogs ahead, 41-39, with 2:45 remaining, Anderson made a pair of free throws with 1:23 left. On the Cogs’ next possession, Galauner found Anderson under the basket for a three-point play with less than a minute to go.

“What’d we win by, five? Right?

Those five points really came in handy,” Galauner said with a laugh.

On Dixon’s ensuing possession, Anderson dove on the floor to force a jump ball – giving the Cogs the ball with 43.2 seconds left.

“I play volleyball, too, so I’m used to diving on the floor, it’s totally not unusual,” Anderson said. “My first job defensively is to force turnovers, because I don’t have that offensive role.”

Scoring hasn’t been a major part of the job title for Anderson this season.

Critical road wins for men’s, women’s basketball DAILY CHRONICLE

The high-scoring Huskies shot well in the fourth quarter and came away with a 101-96 victory at Ball State on Saturday to take sole possession of the top spot in the conference.

“I thought that was a hard-fought game by both teams,” said NIU coach Lisa Carlsen, who has the Huskies off to their best start in the MAC in just her second year. “As a fan, I think that’s a great game to watch because you had a little bit of everything.”

The Huskies (15-5 overall, 8-1 in MAC West) outscored the Cardinals, 30-29, in the fourth quarter and shot 11 for 15 (73.3 percent) from the field as a team and 4 for 4 from the 3-point line to seal the win in a game between teams tied for first place heading into the day.

NIU sophomore shooter Courtney Woods scored a team-high 21 points – including five 3-pointers – and had eight rebounds to lead the way.

With the Huskies leading, 94-89, in the final minutes, Woods drilled a 3-pointer in the corner with more than 20 seconds left on the shot clock to give NIU plenty of cushion the rest of the

way.

Senior guard Ally Lehman nearly got her third triple-double of the season for the Huskies, finishing with 18 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds; freshman guard Janae Poisson scored 18 points – including four 3-pointers – off the bench; and sophomore shooter Mikayla Voigt had 15 points, four assists and made all three of her 3s.

It’s the third time this season that the Huskies have scored at least 100 points – and eighth that they’ve scored at least 90.

Ball State, which had six players score in double figures, led by Moriah Monaco’s 23, were down by 11 points on three separate occasions. The Cardinals (14-7 overall, 7-2 in MAC West) took a 36-25 lead with 6:01 left in the second quarter after a layup by Calyn Hosea.

The Huskies answered with a 16-3 run to take the lead.

“Obviously we got ourselves into a hole a couple times, but this is not a team that looks at the scoreboard very often, in terms of being down,” Carlsen said. “They’re confident in their ability to come back, regardless of where we’re at.”

The Huskies are off until hosting Western Michigan at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Huskies maintained their tie for first place in the MAC West standings by winning their third conference game away from DeKalb, holding on for a victory at Toledo on Saturday afternoon.

“What a game,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said. “I thought we were the tougher team.”

NIU (13-8 overall, 5-3 in MAC West) now is in a three-way tie for first place in the division with Ball State and Eastern Michigan, both of whom won Saturday. The Huskies also improved to 3-1 on the road during MAC play this season.

The Rockets (11-10 overall, 4-4 in MAC West) led by as much as 11 in the first half, but the Huskies turned it around and led by as much as nine in the second half.

“We couldn’t get it over nine, but we were getting good shots,” Montgomery said.

The Huskies had five players in double figures, led by senior big man Marin Maric, who finished with 15 points and nine rebounds in 34 min-

10 points off the bench, while seniors Aaric Armstead and Dontel Highsmith each added 11 in the win.

For Toledo, Jaelen Sanford scored a game-high 29 points, Jonathan Williams had 21, and Steven Taylor Jr. had 17 rebounds and nine assists but only seven points.

“We took Taylor out of it, but Williams got his points, and Sanford, boy, he made some big, big shots,” Montgomery said.

Porter and Sanford traded 3-pointers in the final minute before the Huskies went to the line with a 73-72 lead and 13 seconds remaining.

Both teams made plenty of errors down the stretch, however.

Porter split a pair of free throws, missing the second, and Sanford was fouled with five seconds remaining but missed both attempts. Armstead got the rebound and went to the line for a one-and-one, but he missed the first – giving the Rockets a chance to tie or win it. However, Toledo stepped out of bounds coming down the floor.

NIU will have its toughest test of the season when it hosts the MAC’s firstplace team, Akron, at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the NIU Convocation Center.

Bulls end volatile week with win Thomas unhappy with alleged

Sunday was just a good day to be fitted for a splint.

Thanks to 28 points from Jimmy Butler, as well as the bench showing up to add 49, the Bulls ended an ugly two-game losing streak that saw veterans criticize both the young players and each other, fines handed out, and both Butler and Dwyane Wade benched as punishment.

No wonder coach Fred Hoiberg was calling the 121-108 win over Philadelphia “a critical point of the season.”

“I think the biggest thing [Sunday] was we played the right way,” Hoiberg said. “We played with great effort, and that’s what it’s about. If you go out there and give an honest effort every single night, you’re going to give yourself a chance. Not to say we’re going to win, but we’re going to be there. That’s what this group has to do.”

The lead after the first quarter for the Bulls was 37-23. With 9:30 left in the half, that lead was 20 points thanks to a Rondo free throw.

Walk in the park, right?

Not with this team. A walk in the park for these Bulls is just an opportunity for a mugging.

It came in the third, as Philadelphia (17-29) actually tied the game up with 4:43 left in the quarter on a T.J. McConnell 15-footer.

But there was just too much Butler for the 76ers to have to deal with.

First Butler hit a 19-footer, and a few minutes later scored on back-to-back baskets to jumpstart the lead back up to 92-83. It was a lead that the Bulls (2425) wouldn’t let slip again, either.

“It’s always good to win, man, no matter what goes on around here,” Butler said. “I think everybody wants to win. I think our hearts are pure, and when it’s like that, we’re playing like we did [Sunday], we’ll win a lot more games.”

PED users entering Hall of Fame

Never one to mince words, Frank Thomas is speaking out again about players who use performance-enhancing drugs.

“Not happy at all,” Thomas said of Jeff Bagwell and Ivan Rodriguez getting voted into the Hall despite PED allegations. “Some of these guys were great players. But they wouldn’t have been great players without drugs.

“I don’t mind these guys doing what they want to do for their families and make their money. But don’t come calling to the Hall of Fame and say ‘I’m supposed to be in the Hall of Fame’ when you know you cheated.”

Speaking to an approving audience this weekend at SoxFest, which wrapped up Sunday afternoon at the Chicago Hilton, the White Sox great

said Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa might as well be in the Hall as well.

“They should be in now, as far as I’m concerned,’’ he said.

Thomas was enshrined in 2014 after receiving 84 percent of the vote his first time on the ballot.

“They’ve let a few people in already we all know,’’ Thomas said. “It’s uncomfortable at this point. I’m sure this year’s going to be uncomfortable because we’ve got two great players going in, but they know. It’s no secret. If they didn’t do it, they would be stomping and kicking and in interviews saying ‘I didn’t do it.’

Thomas, who batted .301 with 521 homers and 1,704 RBI over 19 seasons in the majors, is considered the greatest hitter in Sox history. He was never suspected of using performance enhancers and is proud of it.

Simmonds, Gretzky engineer Metropolitans’ All-Star Game win

LOS ANGELES – Wayne Simmonds’ first AllStar weekend after a nine-year NHL career was strange enough. Having Wayne Gretzky for a coach made it even more surreal.

And after he scored the tiebreaking goal to become the All-Star Game MVP in his former home city, the Philadelphia forward could only think of one word for this West Coast trip.

“Weird,” Simmonds said with a grin.

Simmonds completed his hat trick with 4:58 to play, and fill-in coach Gretzky led the Metropolitan Division to a 4-3 victory over the Pacific Division on Sunday in the final match of the revamped NHL All-Star Game.

Columbus’ Cam Atkinson scored the tying goal five seconds earlier for the Metropolitans in the four-team divisional tournament format of wide-open hockey introduced to the midseason classic last season. Washington goalie Braden Holtby blanked the Pacific over the final 10 minutes to secure the win for his 11-man team, which will split a $1 million prize.

Shortly before Atkinson and Simmonds scored, an apparent deflection goal by the Pacific was taken off the board when McDavid was ruled offside. Gretzky’s players thought he had successfully challenged it, although the goal review apparently originated in the league offices in Toronto.

The Pacific beat the Blackhawk-dominated Central Division team, 10-3, in the first 20-minute semifinal, and the Metropolitan team beat the Atlantic, 10-6, in the second.

Minnesota coach Bruce Boudreau didn’t love the laid-back vibe on his Central team, which had four Hawks.

“The guys are here on their break having fun,” Boudreau said. “You aren’t going to get the intensity of a Stanley Cup Final, but the intensity of a preseason game would be good every now and again.”

AFC holds on to win Pro Bowl

ORLANDO, Fla. – Andy Dalton completed 10 of 12 passes for 100 yards and engineered two scoring drives to help lead the AFC to a 20-13 victory over the NFC in the Pro Bowl on Sunday night.

The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelce late in the first half and then guided the offense down the field to set up Justin Tucker’s 38-yard field to put the AFC ahead, 17-7, midway through the third quarter.

The NFC had a chance to tie or take the lead in the waning moments, but Kirk Cousins’ pass to Jimmy Graham went off the Seattle tight end’s hands and was intercepted at the AFC 2-yard line by Buffalo linebacker Lorenzo Alexander, who lateraled the ball to Denver’s Aqib Talib on the return that ended at the NFC 12 to end the threat.

This was the first time the Pro Bowl was played in Orlando.

McIntosh, Wildcats top Indiana

EVANSTON – Bryant McIntosh had 21 points and eight assists, leading surging Northwestern to a 68-55 victory over Indiana on Sunday.

The Wildcats (18-4, 7-2) held the Hoosiers to 32 percent shooting in their sixth consecutive victory. It’s their longest Big Ten win streak since the 1932-33 team matched a school record with seven in a row, and their 7-2 start in conference play is their best since the 1937-38 season.

Indiana (14-8, 4-5) committed 13 turnovers while playing without leading scorer James Blackmon Jr., who got hurt during Thursday night’s 90-60 loss at Michigan.

Northwestern missed its first seven shots and fell behind, 10-1, before grabbing control with a 20-2 run.

Health benefits found in nuts Dear Doctor: Will eating nuts really reduce my risk of heart disease, cancer and other diseases, which a new study has suggested? If so, how many should I be eating?

Dear Reader: Nuts are fruits. They consist of a hard shell and an edible seed.

To answer your question, I’ll use the definition of nuts to refer to the varieties we typically eat, although some, like the peanut, are not truly nuts. Nuts are a good source of fiber and contain antioxidants such as vitamin E, healthy polyunsaturated fats and magnesium. These aspects of nuts could reduce the risk of vascular disease and cancer and possibly rates of diabetes.

A 2013 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine looked at nut intake per week among both male and female health professionals. The researchers followed 173,000 people for a period of 30 years and looked at how many of those people died. They found a marked decrease in death rates among those study participants who ate nuts. They also found the benefit was dose-dependent, meaning the more nuts people ate a week, the smaller their chance of death during the study period. Compared to people who rarely ate nuts, those who ate nuts once a week had an 11 percent decrease in death rate, while those who ate nuts daily had a 20 percent decrease in death rate.

A much larger recent study, published in the journal BMC Medicine, combined multiple studies and looked at rates of death from heart attacks, strokes and cancer. The studies were from the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia and included a total of more than 819,000 participants. The study quantified the benefits of nuts by the number of servings a day.

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley The study authors found a 19 percent decrease in death rates among people who were high nut consumers compared to people who were low nut consumers, with a 24 percent decrease in heart disease, an 11 percent decrease in stroke and an 18 percent decrease in cancer. The authors also found the greatest benefit was seen among those who consumed at least 15 grams to 20 grams of nuts five or six days a week. These results appear to support the findings in the New England Journal study.

So how many nuts is 15 to 20 grams?

About 14 almonds, four Brazil nuts, 11 cashews, 12 hazelnuts, nine walnut halves, 29 pistachios and 18 peanuts.

That’s not a lot. I’m not suggesting you precisely count the number of nuts that you eat at any given time, but I would suggest you eat nuts frequently, perhaps as a snack. I have them on my desk at work. They’re much better for you than the unhealthy, high-sugar, high-carbohydrate snacks that can lead to obesity, diabetes and higher death rates. Nuts are high-energy snacks that provide a more sustained suppression of hunger than sugary snacks.

If you don’t eat nuts already, start slowly. You may like some more than others, and you may tolerate some better than others. In any case, have some nuts; they’re good for you.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY feel like a terrible wife when my Jeanne husband gets Phillips sick – not majorly sick, but with a run-of-the-mill cold. Men can be terrible babies when they are sick. It is a cold. He’s not dying. I happen to have a cold right now, and I am functioning just fine and not moaning and groaning about it.

Also, I am not his mother. When he whines, I shut down or become touchy and crabby. If he doesn’t whine, I’m happy to take care of him, but I can’t take the time during the day to lie in bed with him (I work from home, so I am accessible to him) to keep him warm. I can’t stay up until midnight rubbing his back, and I cannot tolerate the sappy whining.

I made him aware of my disdain for the way sick men behave a number of years ago, but he still acts like the world is ending when he has a cold. How do I tend to him without feeling resentful? – Not His Mother Dear Not His Mother: Cold season is in full swing now. Your husband didn’t catch one on purpose. When people feel fragile they need TLC, and he is no exception.

Here’s how to “tend” to him: Keep a supply of chicken soup on hand, and insist he keep drinking it to stay hydrated. (Chicken soup has magical curative powers.) If he has a headache, there are over-the-counter meds he can take, so suggest it when he complains. While you’re at the pharmacy, buy a heating pad and an extension cord for him so you can keep working if he has the chills. (You probably caught his cold while you were cuddling.) Sanitize any surface he may have touched. Even if you aren’t feeling sympathetic, try to appear as if you are – and keep your sense of humor. A final suggestion: Sleep apart until he’s no longer contagious, which may give him an incentive to recover faster.

Dear Abby: Every year, my adult siblings and mother exchange Christmas gifts. Since my husband died in 2012, my sister has told me she has made a gift in our name to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. She also makes a production of telling this to my children.

Abby, the MDA sends the person in whose name a donation has been made a notification about it, but we have never received a notice of any kind from them. When I contacted them and asked, I was told a donation was never received.

I always give my sister an expensive gift. After finding out what has been going on, I am really upset. Is this acceptable? I have no problem with not exchanging gifts, but this seems to be a way to receive without giving. – Hurt In Georgia Dear Hurt: Lying is not acceptable, and your sister should be ashamed of herself if that’s what has been going on. Tell her that, having received no notification from the MDA acknowledging her donation, you contacted them to ask why and were “shocked” to hear no donation had been made. Here are the answers to the first two questions in my competition.

1. South is in six spades. West leads the club king. Declarer puts up dummy’s ace, but East ruffs and returns a trump. When West discards a club, how should South continue?

South has 12 top tricks: five spades (East’s club ruff cost his natural trump trick), three hearts and four diamonds. However, he cannot draw trumps, because he won’t have a dummy entry left.

West cannot have seven diamonds. So, after winning the second trick in hand, cash the diamond king.

If West discards, take the diamond queen, play a spade to the jack and cash the diamond winners. When both opponents follow suit, cash the heart ace. If West discards, cash the other top hearts, ruff a heart in the dummy, cash the spade jack, ruff a club to hand, draw trumps and take the last two tricks in diamonds.
