Taking one for the family

I am sick and tired of taking birth control pills. I have taken them diligently for years.

Some of my side effects include: weight gain, irritability and PMS. My husband and I were surprised with the pregnancy of our second child while I was on birth control. Call us fertile myrtles, but we were pleasantly shocked.

Unfortunately, we were devastated at our 15-week appointment to find out that our baby no longer had a heartbeat. This was nearly 17 months ago, and we are still grieving.

Everyone wants us to have a “rainbow baby,” but we just feel as if our family is complete with our daughter, Hannah Jo. We felt as if we were in a state of limbo because I don’t want to take birth control anymore, but we also don’t want to have any more children.

So what does my wonderful husband suggest? A vasectomy.

What an awesome dude.

I mean he is really taking one for the team especially because he is afraid of needles, pain, blood or doctors’ offices.

He must have done his research to come up with such a brilliant idea. According to the Urology Foundation, “A vasectomy prevents pregnancy better than any other method of birth control except abstinence.

Apparently, we still have to be careful when engaging in hanky-panky for up to a year.

Still, I am so proud of my husband for taking one for the team.

Giving me the gift of being pill-free will allow my poor reproductive system to purify itself. A natural hormonal fluctuation will probably take a while to restore, but I am confident that my side effects will dwindle until they disappear.

I am lucky to have a man that understands and cares about his family. One who knows what his family needs and is willing to sacrifice a little bit of discomfort for being worry free. My hero!

Services set for DeKalb County physician DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Services have been set for Dr. Bhagavatlal A. Morker, an influential DeKalb County physician who died unexpectedly Thursday at age 62.

A Hindu funeral ceremony will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Anderson Funeral Home, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb.

Visitation will be after the ceremony until 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Cremation will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to the Dr. Bhagavatlal Morker Memorial Fund, addressed to the

Morker Family in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, IL 60115.

Morker, of Sycamore, died Thursday at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.

He was born July 16, 1954, in India to parents Amthabhai and Dahiben Morker. He married Champa Patel in England.

Morker joined the DeKalb Clinic in January 1995 and played a key role in growing the practice that is now KishHealth Physician Group, 1850 Gateway Drive in Sycamore.

KishHealth Physician Group will be closed Saturday; all appointments for that day have been canceled.

First National Challenge generates $58K for Sycamore, DeKalb boosters

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The annual First National Challenge fundraiser concluded with basketball games between the DeKalb and Sycamore boys and girls basketball teams Friday and was able to collect $58,000 for the high schools’ sports booster clubs.

Each booster club will receive $29,000.

With these revenues, as well as with those collected during the DeKalb and Sycamore football games in the fall, the fundraiser has now collected more than $1 million since its start 17 years ago.

Friday’s event, known as the Castle Challenge before Castle Bank was acquired by First National Bank, took place at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center.

A check was presented to the booster clubs’ presidents and officials from both school districts during halftime of the boys basketball game, which started at 8 p.m. The girls basketball game took place at 6 p.m., with Sycamore defeating DeKalb.

Many parents attend the event each year to show support for the schools their children attend, including Greg Olson and Katherine Hryniewiski, both from Sycamore.

Rita Caldwell, who was attending the games for a second year, was torn between the teams. She is a special-education teacher in DeKalb School District 428, but has a daughter in Sycamore School District 427.

“It’s great to hear our students cheer, but I have to keep it mutual,” Caldwell said.

Sycamore resident Don Sebby has attended the event half a dozen times and said he comes as a big sports fan.

“This provides great revenues for each school, and it’s exciting for crowds to support both of them,” Sebby said.

Tom Fellabaum and Larry Knoble, both business owners from DeKalb, have had children that have gone through the DeKalb schools and have attended the fundraiser for about as long as it has been going on.

“This is a big fundraiser for the schools,” Knoble said.

The two also have coached basketball and have played together for 25 years, he said.

“It’s a good community event, and we both love basketball, so why not?” Fellabaum said.

Between the girls and boys games, all of the event sponsors were recognized.

Proceeds will go toward equipment and projects in both school districts.

DeKalb Barb Boosters President Tim Draper said they are looking to expand the concessions area of the DeKalb High School stadium.

“A lot of our revenue comes from concessions, so by expanding the area, it could mean more revenue for our schools,” Draper said. “The community

should hear more as we launch efforts this spring and fall.”

Sycamore Sports Boosters will use its share of the funds for a variety of equipment for high school sports programs, but a large-scale project is still being discussed.

Both clubs also were selling items such as blankets and clothing to help fund the schools’ sports programs.

Superintendent on leave paid over $72K

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Despite being removed from his position for four months, DeKalb School District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller still has received more than a third of his $199,600 annual salary for his current contract year.

As of Friday, 128 days had passed since District 428 officials announced that Moeller had been placed on paid administrative leave after DeKalb High School Principal Michele Albano was granted an order of protection against him. In a grievance she filed with the school district, Albano claimed Moeller intimidated and threatened her after she rejected his advances. The restraining order against Moeller was lifted in October when Albano did not appear in court.

According to documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act Request, the district has paid Moeller $72,410 from the time he was put on leave through Jan. 10.

Interim Superintendent Brad Hawk, who was appointed in October, has been paid $27,750 through Jan. 10.

Hawk’s contract with the district has him working for up to 100 days through June 30. He said that as of Friday, he had worked about 45 days.

Hawk also works as an assistant clinical professor at Northern Illinois Uni-

versity, but is only there part time as terms of his employment with the district.

Moeller took over as district superintendent in the 2013-14 school year.

In 2014, the board and Moeller agreed to a new contract that lasts through April 30, 2019. His salary is to top out at $209,700 in the 2018-19 school year.

In a written statement, District 428 board President Victoria Newport said the board is actively working through its investigation of Moeller and related matters.

“Though we understand the desire by community stakeholders to have quick action or decisions by the board to bring these matters to a close and continue to advance its critical mission of education, the district is obligated to comply with the due process rights of its employees, as well as contractual obligations where applicable,” the statement said. “It is to the benefit of all stakeholders, employees and community members alike that a fair and consistent process be followed.”

Moeller’s high-profile removal in September, and his continued presence on the payroll, could be one reason so many people are running for the District 428 board this year. There are a total of 10 candidates vying for three available board seats. Newport is the only incumbent seeking re-election.

“The principal did not follow through with the court date, so I believe in that situation she should not still be able to maintain her position if Moeller does not maintain his,” Johnson said. “Based on what I have heard and read about the case, I think that if we’re going to have an interim superintendent, then the vice principal

should have been the principal in the interim.”

Other candidates for the District 428 board are Catherine Harned, Jeff Hallgren, Valerie Pena Hernandez, Jeromy Olson, Twangie Smith, Tracy Williams, C. Scott Campbell and Shatoya Black.

Moeller did not respond to a request for comment Thursday.

SYCAMORE – Some Sycamore students, including high schoolers, could be setting their alarm clocks much earlier next year under a proposal being considered by district officials.

Sycamore School District 427 could adopt a staggered starting schedule under a proposal district officials are considering for next school year.

Under the proposal, the 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. hours for Sycamore Elementary School would shift 15 minutes later to 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Students at Sycamore Middle School would arrive and depart one hour earlier; the 8:20 a.m. to 3 p.m. hours would become 7:20 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sycamore High School hours would be from 7:30 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. instead of 8:15 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.

conflicts for elementary school staff members who are involved with after-school activities at the high school, as well as high school students who tend to sleep later, but also need time for extracurricular activities at the end of the day.

“We’re doing some research with regards to what would be best for kids,” she said.

She said the recommended new hours would be detailed in a consider-

ation that Chief Financial Officer Nicole Stuckert will bring to the board as part of the budgeting process.

“We’re trying to flesh out everything we can,” Countryman said.

She said district officials are asking for feedback from board members, and they wanted to make the public aware of the proposed hours before going forward.

Joan M. Roush, 85, of Sycamore died Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at the home of her son in Niles, Illinois.

She was born February 15, 1931 at home on the farm in Kane County the 2nd daughter of John and Marian (Stout) Harvey. Joan graduated from Burlington Township High School in 1949 as salutatorian of her class. Before graduation she started working at K & L Garage in Burlington as an accounting bookkeeper and in later years worked for the Sycamore Community Credit Union and retired in 1996 from Duplex Products, Inc. of Sycamore after 20 years, always working as an accounting

Joan married Marvin H. Roush on October 26, 1950 at the Methodist Church in Burlington and farmed with him for 30 years, beginning on a dairy farm and later raising beef cattle, hogs, and sheep. She could handle most chores and worked many hours on a tractor, both in planting and harvest season. She loved nature, sunsets, northern lights, storms and all animals, especially dogs and cats.

Joan was a member of Mayfield Congregational Church and taught Sunday school for many years while her children were growing up. She served on the church council at various times as, Treasurer, Secretary, and Mission Board. She was very active in the Women’s Fellowship for many years. Joan enjoyed reading, sketching, water color painting, and sewing.

She was very proud of her three sons, Mike, Terry, and Dan; and her three grandsons, Vince, Dave, and Tom; and loved her three daughter-in-law’s, Marilou, Kathy, and Patti, as if they were her own children. She is also survived by her sister, Evelyn Gustafson; and brother, John Harvey.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 30, 2017 at Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Ltd., Quiram Sycamore Chapel, 1245 Somonauk St., Sycamore, IL 60178, with Reverend Harlene Harden officiating. A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Monday prior to the funeral service. A private interment service will be held at a later date at Burlington Union Cemetery.

Second Ward alderman candidate drops out of race DeKALB – A candidate for alderman in DeKalb’s 2nd Ward has announced he plans to withdraw, citing other commitments.

Barry Federici announced Friday he would drop out of April’s election because of increased military responsibilities.

“As many know, I am currently a colonel in the U.S. Marines, a second-year law student at NIU College of Law, husband

and father of four,” Federici said. “I remain excited about the potential we have in DeKalb and look forward to working with the city in the future to build on our assets.”

There now will be a two-way race for the aldermanic seat between incumbent Bill Finucane and William Lamb.

“I believe we need to start with better communication and encourage city leaders to better collaborate with the residents of this great community,” Federici said.

DeKALB – Police are seeking information about a suspicious man suspected of breaking in to two apartments in DeKalb.

DeKalb police were called to two addresses Jan. 14 in the 200 block of Deerpath Lane in DeKalb for reports of a man who broke into two apartments, according to a DeKalb County Crime Stoppers news release issued Friday. A forensic composite of the suspect

can be seen on the DeKalb Police Department’s Facebook page.

Anyone with information on these crimes is asked to contact DeKalb County Crime Stoppers at 815-895-3272 or crimestoppers@dekalbcounty.org. Callers can remain anonymous.

Man charged with home invasion, armed robbery

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Police have connected a DeKalb man with a string of crimes, including two separate robberies of the same DeKalb apartment.

Larry L. Jackson, 27, of the 1000 block of West Hillcrest Drive, DeKalb, has been charged with armed robbery, possession of stolen property and two counts of home invasion with a firearm. Home invasion is typically punishable by six to 30 years in prison.

Jackson was arrested Tuesday after police obtained a search warrant and found stolen items in his apartment that linked him to several crimes, DeKalb police Cmdr. Bob Redel said.

Police said Jackson and another man entered an apartment in the 100 block of North Fourth Street in DeKalb

on Oct. 22. Once inside, police said Jackson hit a resident of the apartment in the head with a gun and threatened to shoot him. The men stole a small amount of Larry L. marijuana, cash, gift Jackson cards, a computer and other items.

Police said Jackson returned to the same apartment in the 100 block of North Fourth Street in DeKalb on Jan. 11. This time, police said Jackson threatened to shoot a woman in the apartment in the leg and stole an Apple laptop and a cellphone, according to a police synopsis contained in court records.

Jackson also was charged with possession of stolen property. Two guitars, an amplifier, three watches, two

video game consoles and other electronics were stolen from an apartment in the 1200 block of Varsity Boulevard in DeKalb. The burglary was reported Jan. 9.

Police said Jackson sold the guitars and some of the other stolen items at two pawn shops in Aurora for $700.

Other items – including two TVs and a Keurig coffee maker – were found in Jackson’s apartment, according to police reports.

Police continue to investigate Jackson. Redel said he could face additional charges.

Jackson’s attorney, Bob Nolan, declined to comment on the case Friday because he hadn’t yet had a chance to read reports or talk to his client.

Jackson is being held at the DeKalb County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond. He is next due in court Tuesday.

Eric M. Barth Prosecutors are not able to charge him with escape for failing to go to jail because no court order for incarceration was filed at the time he was originally sentenced in July. Barth was supposed to report to jail after confirming his work schedule. But Barth didn’t do that and then didn’t return to court.

Barth has a history of drunken driving. He was sentenced to five years in prison for a 2010 DUI crash that injured an elderly Hampshire couple. Barth qualified for boot camp for nonviolent offenders in that case and avoided prison. Barth later pleaded guilty to a 2012 driving under the influence charge and was sentenced to 2½ years in prison in that case, according to media reports.

DeKALB – A 26-year-old man with two previous drunken-driving convictions who never showed up for his work-release jail time has been sentenced to 180 days in the DeKalb County Jail.

Eric M. Barth, 26, of Burlington, was convicted of aggravated driving while his license was revoked in 2016.

In July, Judge Philip Montgomery sentenced Barth to 180 days of jail with work release, 24 months of probation and ordered him to undergo an alcohol treatment evaluation. Barth was also ordered to obtain a alcohol-monitoring device to ensure he did not drink.

Prosecutors said Barth failed to appear in court to arrange to turn himself in to serve his sentence and never complied with a Montgomery’s order to get an alcohol-monitoring device. He spent several months at large until he was arrested on a warrant Jan. 5 and then sentenced Jan. 17 to 180 days in jail, according to court records.

found to have violated the terms of his probation and is sentenced. That issue remains pending, Thompson said.

Barth had initially been charged with aggravated driving under the influence, aggravated driving with a suspended or revoked license, driving with a suspended or revoked license and driving on a suspended license after a 2015 traffic stop in Sycamore.

After a bench trial in 2016, Montgomery acquitted Barth of the drunken-driving charges, but found Barth guilty of aggravated driving with a revoked license.

A Sycamore police officer arrested Barth on March 24, 2015, after he saw the truck he was in hit the fog line

after a trip through the drive-thru at McDonald’s. The officer watched as Barth drove behind the closed Charter Fitness facility at 720 Foxpointe Drive.

The officer found Barth, who appeared intoxicated, lying across the driver’s seat in an apparent attempt to hide, according to court documents. Barth refused to take field sobriety tests and, later at the police department, refused all chemical tests, according to court records.

At a sentencing hearing in July, Montgomery had told Barth to expect close scrutiny from prosecutors while on probation.

When Barth failed to heed that advice, prosecutors sought to put him behind bars.

Barth’s attorney couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Barth is next due in court May 3.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s request that a judge bar the state from paying 63,000 government employees to get feuding Republicans and Democrats to move on a budget deal was decried Friday by GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner, who claimed the Democrat is attempting to “cause a crisis” and shut down the government.

Madigan filed the motion Thursday in St. Clair County, a staunch working-class Illinois suburb of St. Louis where a judge nearly two years ago ordered that withholding paychecks, even without a budget, would violate the state Constitution’s requirement that contractual agreements be honored.

She wants the court to set a Feb. 28 deadline, giving Rauner and Democrats who control the Legislature “additional time to enact appropriations” before the comptroller stops cutting checks.

Spokesman: Johnson’s illness unrelated to kidney issue

CHICAGO – Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson’s episode of dizziness during a news conference Friday was unrelated to a “longstanding kidney issue,” Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted.

Guglielmi posted the update on Twitter after Johnson appeared dazed and had to sit down while Mayor Rahm Emanuel was announcing an initiative to reduce homicides and shootings.

“He is not on dialysis and does not have diabetes,” Guglielmi said, adding that Johnson is fine and is in “great spirits.”

“He has been managing his kidney problem for 30 years, nearly his entire adult life,” Guglielmi said. “I don’t know if it is on a level that he needs a transplant.”

Mayor: Evanston still has ‘sanctuary city’ status

EVANSTON – Evanston’s mayor is reinforcing that the Chicago suburb is a safe place for immigrants after President Donald Trump’s issued an executive order affecting sanctuary cities.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl’s statement this week said she is “troubled” by Trump’s order and Evanston “will continue to work to welcome all people.”

Trump’s executive order would cut some federal funding from immigrant-protecting municipalities.

The sanctuary cities label is something cities and other public entities have sought to offer local protections to immigrants living in the U.S. illegally. It can include barring police from asking residents about immigration status.

O’Hare flights drop in 2016; Atlanta busiest airport again

CHICAGO – The Federal Aviation Administration reported that O’Hare International Airport in Chicago was the nation’s second busiest in 2016. Flights at O’Hare dropped 1 percent.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport saw a jump in flights of 2 percent compared with 2015. It had just fewer than 900,000 arrivals and departures compared with O’Hare’s 868,000.

Los Angeles International Airport took over the third spot in 2016 from the field in Dallas-Fort Worth. Denver’s was fifth for a second straight year.

Midway International Airport on Chicago’s South Side was 25th busiest for the second year in a row with 253,000 flights, down slightly.

But he became their biggest ally in 2015 when their paychecks were threatened and a work stoppage would have evaporated his leverage. Blagojevich’s daughter criticizes Obama

CHICAGO – A daughter of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is criticizing former President Barack Obama for not granting early release to her father, who’s serving prison time for corruption.

In an emotional letter, 20-year-old Amy Blagojevich called Obama “spineless” for not commuting her father’s sentence.

Blagojevich’s wife, Patti, posted the letter on her Facebook page.

Blagojevich is in the fourth year of a 14year sentence on corruption convictions, including for trying to sell Obama’s U.S. Senate seat after he became president.

The ex-governor petitioned Obama for a commutation, and both Amy and her sister wrote letters asking Obama to act.

It was Trump’s first White House meeting with a foreign head of state, a hastily arranged confab held precisely one week after the businessman and reality TV star, who remains a largely unknown figure to European audiences, was sworn into office as president.

Trump sought to charm May from the outset, showing her the bust of Prime Minister Winston Churchill that he’s using to decorate the Oval Office. He then opened a joint news conference by noting that his late mother was born in “Stornoway, which is serious Scotland.” Scotland is part of Great Britain.

Trump and May were seen briefly holding hands as they walked along the White House colonnade after leaving the Oval Office. Their talks continued in the State Dining Room over lunch of iceberg wedge salad, braised beef short ribs with potato puree and salted caramel crème brulee.

For her part, May congratulated Trump on his “stunning election victory,” and announced that he had accepted the queen’s invitation for a state visit with his wife, first lady Melania Trump, later this year.

But the attempts at mutual flattery didn’t completely mask the leaders’ differences over some issues, including NATO and Russia.

May tried to push Trump toward positions she supports, noting that he had assured her

he was “100 percent” behind NATO, a world body he has dismissed as “obsolete.” Trump did not contradict May as they stood together and answered journalists’ questions in the White House East Room.

May also took a tougher stance on sanctions against Russia.

When asked how close the U.S. is to lifting penalties that were imposed on Russia after its incursion into Ukraine, Trump said it was “very early to be talking about that.” May said sanctions should remain until a 2015 cease-fire agreement for Ukraine is fully implemented.

Trump has been less critical of Russia and its leader, President Vladimir Putin, than his predecessor and some lawmakers, including fellow Republicans. He has cast doubt on findings by U.S. intelligence officials that Russia interfered in the presidential election to help him win the White House, and has praised Putin’s leadership. Trump’s stance has fueled speculation that he could ease or remove the sanctions against Russia.

Trump also reiterated his belief that torture works. Britain takes a vocal stand against it.

The appearance alongside May was more amiable than Trump’s most recent public appearance with a foreign leader: a joint news conference with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto in August. Trump was more staid and serious then, and read from lengthy prepared remarks.

Coincidentally, Trump and May met a day after Pena Nieto canceled his own trip to Washington next week amid disagreement with Trump over which of their countries will pay for the wall Trump wants to build along the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump said Mexico will pay; Mexico said it won’t.

U.S. Muslims feel mix of despair and resolve

The Associated Press Four days after President Donald Trump was inaugurated, mental health counselors hosted a webinar on how their fellow American Muslims could cope. They surveyed the political landscape: a White House framing Islam itself as a threat, a surge in anti-Muslim hostility and suspicion of immigrants in general.

The counselors offered tips such as limiting time on social media. And they cautioned against withdrawing in discouragement, worried about losing whatever foothold Muslims have gained in public life since the crucible of Sept. 11.

“It’s very easy to tell a story of victimization, fear, feeling ... not welcome in our own home,” said Ben Herzig, a Massachusetts therapist with a specialty in Muslim mental health. “But the narrative of Islam in American can be a positive one.”

While many express alarm at Trump’s statements, Muslim leaders are pushing back. They are organizing protests, hosting elected officials at their mosques, building ties with other faith groups and encouraging Muslims to run for elected office. Many of these initiatives had been planned before the general election, but have taken on a new urgency since then.

Trump signed an executive order Friday setting “new vetting measures” to keep “radical Islamic terrorists” out of the United States. The order was expected to indefinitely stop Syrian refugee entry into the U.S. and suspend issuing visas for people from other majority-Muslim countries. The new president and his supporters insist his measures are needed to strengthen national security.

Meanwhile, a Texas state lawmaker recently sent a provocative survey to local Muslim leaders asking, among oth-

er things, their views of Islamic law and whether they would pledge not to harm Muslims who left the faith. On Wednesday, a businessman attacked a Muslim airline employee at New York’s Kennedy Airport, kicking her, shouting obscenities at her and saying that Trump “will get rid of all of you,” authorities said.

“The discourse has shifted from good Muslims and bad Muslims to, ‘How bad is the Muslim you’re talking about?’ ” said attorney Hassan Ahmad, an immigration law specialist in Virginia with many clients from Muslim countries.

Muslim leaders acknowledge they are in a relatively weak position from which to advocate, amid the nation’s inflamed mood over immigration, religion and terrorism.

The U.S. is home to only about 3.3 million Muslims, which means just a small number of Americans actually know a member of the faith. Many U.S. Muslims come from families that only arrived a generation ago. But they have more organizations, charities and cultural clout than ever, built by a post-9/11 generation eager to assert their American identity.

Companies such as Amazon, Nabisco and CoverGirl recently have featured Muslims in their advertisements. The night after Trump’s inauguration, comic Aziz Ansari, speaking from one of the most influential platforms in pop culture as host of “Saturday Night Live,” called out anti-Muslim prejudice, white supremacy and other bias that has come to the forefront.

“It’s very clear that one of the goals of bigoted language is to make the victims feel isolated and make them feel that they have no allies and they have no power to get them to be silent, and intimidate them, and make them give up,” said Dalia Mogahed, director of research for the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding, an American Muslim think-tank.

WASHINGTON – The politically ascendant anti-abortion movement gathered Friday for a triumphant rally on the National Mall, rejoicing at the end of an eight-year presidency that participants said was dismissive of their views.

Vice President Mike Pence told the crowd at the March for Life that anti-abortion policies were a top priority of the new administration, and President Donald Trump tweeted that the rally had his “full support.”

The March for Life is held every year in Washington to mark the anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.

While no official crowd estimates were available, the turnout was clearly larger than in recent years, when abortion opponents had less political clout. Many thousands huddled in the shadow of the Washington Monument and stood in long lines outside security checkpoints made necessary by Pence’s appearance.

“We’ve come to a historic moment in the cause for life,” said Pence, the first vice president to address the rally.

“Life is winning in America.”

Other participants said they felt the march was important this year because their voices were not represented at last week’s Women’s March on Washington, an anti-Trump demonstration that drew massive crowds in Washington and cities around the country.

Thumbs-up to ‘challenge’ games Thumbs-up: To another school year of successful “challenge” games. On Friday evening, DeKalb and Sycamore high schools’ girls and boys basketball teams faced off at the Northern Illinois University’s Convocation Center. It was the 17th school year that the DeKalb and Sycamore football and one basketball game have been the backdrop for what is now the First National Challenge. The fundraising effort generated more than $50,000 for the two schools’ booster clubs this year. The traditional rivalry games also have become a community event where residents and students can showcase their community pride and have a good time together. It’s a tradition we hope continues for years to come. We applaud the people at First National Bank who help make this event possible.

Thumbs-down: To double-booking public hearings. On Monday, state and county officials said they didn’t know that both had scheduled Feb. 9 public hearings on Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital’s plans to build a 111,000-square-foot fitness center on property near the hospital. The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board has scheduled a hearing on the project to begin at 11:30 a.m. in DeKalb, while DeKalb County’s Planning, Zoning and Building Commission has called for a 1 p.m. hearing in Sycamore. We understand how this kind of scheduling issue can arise. However, in the spirit of transparency and public inclusion, these hearings should be rescheduled for different days, or at least a few more hours apart so that interested members of the public can attend both if they choose.

Thumbs-up: To free income-tax help. Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois this week began operating free income-tax preparation and filing sites for the eighth year. The service is available to people who earn less than $54,000 a year and is offered in conjunction with the IRS and the United Way of the Rock River Valley. Those who qualify can get free help filing their taxes from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays at Northern Illinois University’s Holmes Student Center, 600 Lucinda Ave. in DeKalb. For some, financial matters can be intimidating, and we’re glad someone is available to help people file quickly – and, hopefully, get a refund.

Thumbs-down: To leaving town without a vote. Although Gov. Bruce Rauner pointed to compromise talks in the Illinois Senate as evidence that a compromise to end the state’s 18-month-old budget crisis was near, senators decided to adjourn early this week rather than meet a self-imposed deadline to vote on anything. Maybe while senators are home from Springfield, they will hear from their constituents, most of whom we believe would urge them to oppose proposals for a 33 percent personal income tax hike, along with a new 5 percent excise tax on services such as auto repair and laundry. We join with those who say Illinoisans pay too much in taxes already, and want the compromise to give us a government we can afford.

Aid-in-dying services dilemma In November, Coloradans approved, by a margin of nearly 2 to 1, a measure that allows terminally ill patients to request a prescription they can self-ingest to bring about a peaceful death.

Since then, health care organizations have opted not to provide aid-in-dying services.

The measure allows physicians, nurses and pharmacists to opt out of participation. Health care organizations can prohibit the practice on their premises, a major issue in communities where one system owns most physician practices. Although the law states that health systems can’t prohibit physician employees from writing prescriptions for life-ending medications to be taken off-site, that provision is being challenged by religiously affiliated hospitals.

Providers cite various reasons for not wanting to participate. Some oppose assisted suicide as inconsistent with their religious and moral values.

Others are concerned with

fraud, coercion and the potential to be embroiled in lawsuits.

Some just want more time to figure out how the provision of aid-in-dying counseling and prescriptions might work before they decide whether to offer such services.

Openly acting to cause death is a change for professionals and organizations whose mission has been to heal, although there are many steps along the continuum between prolonging life and hastening death.

Many Coloradans can envision a time when they might want this service; many medical professionals are reluctant to provide it. So what will give?

One possibility is that an industry will arise similar to the one created by the medical marijuana law: physicians who have no previous relationship with these patients will rubber-stamp requests and provide prescriptions for a hefty price.

Two scenarios are more attractive, both with structures

more in line with what the creators of the law envisioned.

One is that organizations will be created specifically for this purpose; the other is that hospices and similar providers will offer such assistance. Neither is as helpful as an ongoing, long-term relationship with a physician whom a patient trusts to provide truthful information and honest guidance about end-of-life choices. Either would be far better than nothing for terminally ill individuals who experience agonizing pain and no hope for improvement.

Right now, proponents are developing websites and hotlines to provide information and support to physicians and pharmacists, and to connect patients with providers who will provide aid-in-dying services.

That might be the best that can be done while Colorado works through the issues involved in openly aiding those who want to end their lives.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

“How?” interrupted Warren, who went on to sneer, “You’re going to give that to someone else to do?”

Warren’s attack was absurd because Trump University was not an actual college that received federal funding.

As the Cato Institute’s Neal McCluskey points out, “Of course it wasn’t, and the education secretary did not have jurisdiction over it.”

What DeVos should have said: “I would do nothing about Trump University, you smearmonger! Trump U has nothing to do with schools that get federal money. Do you conflate the two just to make profit the villain?”

To the Editor: I’m running for mayor of DeKalb.

In my last letter, I told you some of my ideas on bringing jobs to DeKalb.

Crime is another area of concern.

Neighborhood watches and coordinating with Northern Illinois University, the county and surrounding counties are part of my multilevel approach to keeping our residents safe.

Knowing where crime is originating and targeting those areas is the key. For neighborhood watches, getting the chief of police to hold informational and training sessions lets residents become part of the solution.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and Northern Illinois University police both hold a Citizen Police Academy. I am an alumna of the county’s training.

The course not only gives residents hands-on training, but graduates of this program can help the sheriff with some duties, such as traffic control, so that depu-

ing counties to learn things that they are doing successfully and identifying possible threats so that we can be prepared in advance are things that can benefit DeKalb.

Taxes have increased under our current mayor. Property taxes, water bills and other fees have increased. We have seen many more high-paying administrative positions being created at city hall.

The number of administrators we have needs to fit the population of DeKalb.

Having more of our tax dollars tied up in contractors who are doing the duties of current staff is not the best use of tax dollars.

Restructuring our debt is another possibility to reduce the tax burden.

The county has placed all of its roads on a 20-year replacement schedule.

DeKalb has only allocated $300,000 for street repair for 2017.

Restructuring the budget to allocate more money to road repair is needed.

The county also uses a coating that

Proficiency means a third-grader masters third-grade-level work. Growth means improvement – that’s fairer to disadvantaged students, who start from behind.

DeVos began, “I would ... correlate it to competency and mastery ...”

“That’s growth. That’s not proficiency,” interrupted Franken, suggesting that DeVos didn’t understand education terms.

DeVos should have said: “Senator, neither measure is fair to teachers or kids! The proficiency vs. growth argument is a by-product of your stupid No Child Left Behind law. Such federal micromanagement is terrible because every kid is different. That’s why your opposition to choice is destructive. Of course, you don’t even know how bad many government-run schools are. You sent your kids to a private school that charges $44,000 tuition. Get real, Al!” Sen. Chris Murphy demanded that DeVos support a ban on guns in schools.

DeVos replied, “That is best left to locales and states.”

Murphy was incredulous. “You

Finally, DeKalb is accused of not being business-friendly. It is vital to look at the reasons behind this perception. The city municipal code needs a thorough checking to make sure that DeKalb is business-friendly.

To the Editor: It is with mixed emotions that I announce my withdrawal as a candidate for 2nd Ward alderman for the city of DeKalb.

Earlier at the hearing, Sen. Mike Enzi mentioned a Wyoming school that has “a grizzly bear fence.” So DeVos joked that there was “probably a gun in the school to protect from potential grizzlies.”

The New York Times called that comment an “internet punchline.” GQ called DeVos “Horribly Embarrassing in Every Way” and, oversimplifying the issue, said that “she thinks guns belong in schools because of ... grizzlies.”

What DeVos should have said: “Senator! Have you no understanding of federalism? You think Washington, or you, knows what’s best for all schools in America? As education secretary, I don’t have the power to ban guns. No federal official does! Read the Constitution, you ignorant control freak!”

OK. This is fantasy. No nominee can be that rude to politicians who have power over her.

But I can wish, can’t I?

President Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of education, Betsy DeVos, probably survived the grilling she got from angry Democrats last week.

When Sen. Patty Murray demanded she promise not “to privatize public schools,” DeVos replied, “Not all schools are working for the students.”

When Sen. Bernie Sanders asked her to make “universities tuition free,” DeVos replied, “I think that’s a really interesting idea, (but) there’s nothing in life that’s truly free.”

Those answers were fine. I suppose it’s important for a nominee to be polite.

But what I wish she’d said was: “No, Sen. Murray, I won’t promise not to privatize! Didn’t you notice the mess government schemes create? Many government-run schools are lousy! Private is better!”

“Sen. Sanders, how clueless can you be? Your ‘free’ stuff is already bankrupting America! Your ‘free’ health care plan was rejected by your own state – once your fellow Democrats did the math. Then your wife bankrupted Burlington College! You call yourself ‘socialist!’ Haven’t you noticed that socialism wrecks people’s lives? You should resign in shame!”

DeKALB – With everything clicking on all cylinders for the DeKalb boys basketball team, not even foul trouble for its leading rebounder could slow down the Barbs.

DeKalb scored 24 of the first 29 points of the game against rival Sycamore on Friday night at the NIU Convocation Center and cruised to a 63-26 win, sweeping the season series.

“Our energy at the start of the game was fantastic, especially defensively,” DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said. “(Keyshawn) Stallworth hit that 3 (to cut the DeKalb lead to 4-3 in the first two minutes of the game), and that didn’t bother us too much because that was out of character for what they do.

I thought we did a good job defensively to set the tone.”

Sycamore (8-11 overall, 2-5 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) trailed, 8-5, after Stallworth added a layup with 2:58 left, but the Barbs (14-6, 6-0) rolled off 16 straight points to take a 24-5 lead. Sycamore’s Jordan Tolzin hit a 3 to end the Barbs’ run with 3:05 left – nearly eight minutes between Sycamore field goals.

“They’re a very good defensive team, and we just didn’t come out and execute very well,” Sycamore coach Ryan Picolotti said. “We just dribbled around, we didn’t get open and we didn’t take a good shot until about three minutes left in the second quarter. Against them, you take bad shots, it’s like a turnover.”

The Spartans shot 6 of 22 in the first half. The Barbs keyed in on Sycamore leading scorer Jack Mizgalski, who was held without a field goal until the fourth quarter and finished with six points.

“Obviously, we’re very concerned about Mizgalski,” Biancalana said.

“He is such a talented player, and to hold him to only one basket, and that was in the fourth quarter, was a heck of a job by our guys. I thought we did a great job of forcing [Ty Sulaver] (who finished with nine points) into some difficult situations.”

Sisson also had two blocks that turned into points on the other end during the Barbs’ 16-0 first-half run. Stallworth led the Spartans with 15 points, and he and Mizgalski each had a team-best four rebounds.

DeKalb led, 49-23, in the third, but Sycamore scored seven straight – its longest run of the game. Mizgalski’s first bucket came with 7:42 left in the contest.

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The Sycamore girls basketball team couldn’t make a shot from 3-point range Friday.

The foul line was a different story.

The Spartans scored almost half of their points from the line and led nearly the entire game in a 40-30 victory over rival DeKalb in the First National Challenge at the NIU Convocation Center.

“That’s something we talked about in timeouts, ‘Hey, be aware of the fouls.

If they’re getting into you with their hands, make it obvious,’ ” Sycamore coach Adam Wickness said. “You have to make adjustments to how the game is being called – they were calling a lot of bodies, a lot of blocking calls. I thought in the second half we took advantage of their aggressiveness by drawing a lot of contact and getting to the free-throw line and knocking them down.”

The Spartans (16-7 overall, 7-4 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) finished the game shooting 18 for 31 from the foul line, while the Barbs went 6 for 11.

Sycamore picked up its third straight win over its rival in the annual game at NIU. Sycamore junior wing Kate Majerus finished with a game-high 12 points, but went 1 for 7 from the field – getting most of her points by finishing 10 for 12 from the foul line.

Majerus went 0 for 5 from 3-point range, and the Spartans finished 0 for 11 as a team.

The Barbs (5-20, 1-9) got 11 points from junior guard Rocky Mills, including a 3-pointer. However, DeKalb’s top two scorers on the season – Mills and Jacki Rapp – both fouled out. Mills

picked up her fifth with 5:36 remaining, and Rapp left with 2:50 left in the game.

DeKalb picked up its first and only lead of the game when Rapp drained a 3-pointer to put the Barbs ahead, 6-4, with 2:41 left in the first quarter. The Spartans responded by going on a 6-0 run – a layup by Emma Stice, a putback

by Maria Wright and Majerus’ jumper at the buzzer – to close out the quarter and take the lead for good.

“We didn’t play our best game,

which is too bad,” DeKalb coach Elliot Whitefield said. “A lot of fouls, and you can’t give up 30 free ones. ... Right now, we’re 10 points less than everybody in our conference.”

The Barbs got a break in the first half with Sycamore star freshman point guard Kylie Feuerbach picking up her third foul with 5:56 left in the second quarter. However, the Spartans outscored the Barbs, 8-3, the rest of the quarter – including six free throws – to go into halftime ahead, 18-11.

“This week, we’ve had some meetings where we’ve talked and stressed the importance of the whole team and not just the Kate and Kylie show,” Wickness said. “I think it gave some of our other girls the chance to step up into some roles that are a little more prominent in that first half, and I thought they played well.”

Feuerbach scored 10 of her 11 points in the second half, going 5 for 8 from the foul line.

By the numbers: The Spartans had four players with at least five rebounds. Juliet Mathey had a gamehigh eight – including five offensive – Wright had six, and Stice and Feuerbach each grabbed five. Rapp, Dennysha Kizer and Ashley Nelson each had four for the Barbs.

Beyond the stats: It was a stark difference in the first half for the Barbs from the last time the two teams played.

When DeKalb hosted the Spartans on Dec. 2, the Barbs trailed, 27-5, at halftime before losing, 50-31.

“The first half of the MAC season has been good for us; hopefully the second half can be just as good,” Carlsen said.

The Huskies (14-5 overall) will have their hands full against Ball State, however.

The Cardinals (14-6) have a combination of a high-scoring offense (74.6 points a game) and a stingy defense (62 points allowed a game) and lead the MAC in scoring margin (plus-12.6) through eight games. They lead the conference in both assists per game (18.1) and opponent field-goal percentage (34.8 percent), and the Cardinals’ only loss in MAC play has been to Central Michigan – which is right behind the Huskies and Cardinals at 6-1 in league play.

Although NIU sophomore guard Mikayla Voigt said the Huskies aren’t looking ahead on the schedule, she dropped a clue immediately after the win over Kent State that possibly the Huskies knew they have a big contest slated for today.

“No one on this team has lost sight on it’s one game at a time. If you ask me who we play next – well, I know we play Ball State next – if you ask me who we play after that, you’d have to go ask the coaches,” said Voigt, who is averaging 13 points a game in MAC play.

The Huskies post a high-powered offense that is first in the MAC (84.2 points a game), but the Cardinals have plenty of size to their lineup.

In conference action, Ball State’s 6-foot-1 junior forward Moriah Monaco averages 18.1 points a game (seventh in the MAC) and 6-5 senior post Renee Bennett is averaging 18 points (eighth in the MAC) and nine rebounds a game (fifth). The offense is run by 5-8 sophomore point guard Carmen Grande, who is dishing out 7.9 assists a game.

After the Huskies’ win against K ent State, sophomore Courtney Woods and Voigt seemed energetic when the idea of facing off against Ball State was brought up.

“It’s Ball State, CMU or us, so it’ll be interesting to see us go up against Ball State,” Woods said.

“It’s going to be fun,” Voigt chimed in. “It’s going to be fun.”

“It’s one of those measures to see how good we can be,” Woods finished.

The Huskies showed how good they can be in the third quarter against the Golden Flashes, outscoring them, 3721, in the period and playing with a fast pace that turned the NIU offense into a layup line. Not only did they score 18 points in the paint in the quarter, but they made 10 consecutive baskets and finished with 30 or more points in a period for the sixth time this season.

“I think whenever we get like that, we’re a lot to handle,” Carlsen said.

3-point shooter The lowdown: The Huskies and Rockets are part of a five-way tie for second place overall in the MAC – with Akron sitting in first at 7-0. ... Through seven conference games, NIU has faced six MAC East teams and only one MAC West foe – beating Central Michigan, 87-83,

Jan. 7 in DeKalb. ... Toledo is 8-1 at home, and the Huskies are 4-4 on the road. However, NIU is 2-1 away from home in conference play. ...

NIU is shooting 33 percent from 3-point range the past two games, but is shooting 29.2 percent from deep on the season.

Eight games into Mid-American Conference play, the Huskies are tied atop the standings with Ball State as the two teams battle for driver’s seat position in the West Division when they play at 3:30 p.m. today in Muncie, Indiana.

The two teams come into the game 7-1 in MAC play after winning Wednesday – the Huskies blew past Kent State, 93-72; and the Cardinals earned an 89-75 road win at Buffalo.

“Every time out is a measuring stick for us,” NIU second-year coach Lisa Carlsen said. “We have a lot of (MAC) West opponents left to play.

Ball State we haven’t seen. Central (Michigan) we haven’t seen. Western (Michigan) we haven’t seen. All having great years. Does [the win over Kent State] help us gain momentum for those kind of games? Yeah. I think this group is confident that we can step on the floor with anybody, whether it’s at home or on the road, and be competitive and have an opportunity to win.”

Playing a quasi high-stakes game this late in the season has been uncommon for the Huskies recently. They haven’t had a winning conference record eight games into the schedule since 2008-09 – when they were 6-2 before finishing third in the MAC West with a record of 10-6.

It also is the best conference record through eight games for the Huskies since they went 24-6 overall and 16-0 in the Mid-Continent Conference in 1993-94 en route to a trip to the NCAA tournament – falling to

Bickering Bulls lose to Heat

CHICAGO – Goran Dragic had 26 points and 11 assists, Willie Reed scored 20 points and Dion Waiters added 19 to lead the Miami Heat to their sixth straight win Friday night, a 10088 victory over the bickering Bulls.

Jimmy Butler was the first off bench and received a loud ovation from the United Center crowd when he checked in with 6:53 remaining in the first quarter. Wade also received a loud ovation when he entered 28 seconds later. Rondo, however, was greeted by some boos when he checked in with 5:05 to go in the first.

The players held a lengthy meeting before the shootaround that Forman and executive vice president of basketball operations John Paxson were in on, and everyone involved said the younger players had a chance to speak.

“Certain comments were made,” Rondo said. “I feel like I needed to make a statement for my team. One thing that I loved about this team that was different from the past, the last couple years of my career, is when I got here, the young guys, they were in the gym.

I love to come back by myself at night.

When I came back there were seven, eight guys here getting work in.”

So when the stars blasted the team’s desire after Wednesday’s loss, with Wade in particular questioning the younger players, Rondo took issue.

On Instagram, he said the veterans he played with in Boston never took days off. That seemed to be a direct shot at the 35-year-old Wade, who rarely practices and sometimes sits out the back end when the Bulls play on consecutive nights.

“I could take that as a personal attack,” Wade said. “But what’s that going to do for me? Come in here and fight Rajon because he said his vets practiced every day? I’m 35. I’m not practicing every day. That’s very clear. Everyone has their own things.

My vets did different things, too. They were very successful with what they did in Boston.

“I took it as a human being expressing himself and feeling he wanted to come out and say something regarding the young guys on the team, and he felt it was portrayed different,” he continued. “And that’s his leadership. That’s his way of leading. Just like my way of leading is my way of leading. When I come out here and I smile and say all these positive things, that’s my way of leading. And when I come in and say I’m pissed off, that’s my way of leading at that time.”

Quintana tries to ignore trade speculation

CHICAGO – You’re Jose Quintana, and all you’ve heard all winter long is not if, but when you will be traded by the White Sox. So when the Sox’s fan convention came up on the calendar on this late January weekend, Quintana found himself in the part awkward, part uneasy, part uncertain place of being surrounded by adoring teammates and fans, with the clear understanding he might not pitch for them by the time Opening Day rolls around April 3.

But if you’re Quintana, you roll with the flow. Pitching well and almost always being on the short end of run support toughens you up. Quintana, one of baseball’s most effective and consistent left-handed starters over the past four seasons, said he expects to be with the Sox on Opening Day, and if

that’s the case, he’s the odds-on favorite to make his first Opening Day start.

“I try to do my job and that’s it,” Quintana said. “I don’t pay attention to rumors.”

After general manager Rick Hahn traded Chris Sale and Adam Eaton during the winter meetings, signaling the start of an overhaul to load up on prospects, deepen the farm system and project a championship-caliber team in three years or more, Quintana essen- Jose Quintana tially was put on alert as the next valuable piece to be traded. But the market, Hahn said, hasn’t presented itself for a return the Sox view as viable. So they will wait for one.

“If we had our druthers, we would continue to make transactions like [the Eaton] and the Sale deal in rapid succession,” Hahn said. “Our desire is to

get through this process and build a sustainable core of talented players as quickly as possible.”

Quintana is not alone among players wearing Sox jerseys wondering if they’ll be wearing one in April. Or after the nonwaiver trade deadline Aug. 1. Todd Frazier, eligible for free agency for the first time after the season, is another. Frazier and any of the veterans are fair game for the right return.

“It’s not hanging over my head,” said Frazier, a 40-home run hitter acquired from the Reds last offseason. “Once you’ve been traded, you don’t worry about it too much. They said I was supposed to go to the Dodgers, and then Justin Turner signed with them, so it was ‘on to the next team.’ When my agent hits me up, I will either worry or get excited.”

For veterans such as Frazier, it not always is easy to get excited about going to spring training knowing your team isn’t built to win. Frazier, who

will be counted on for clubhouse leadership if and when he still is here, talked like a leader Friday while the many prospects around him gushed about the excitement of growing together in one system and being good one day.

“At the end of the day, these guys are professionals,” Hahn said. “They’ve been through this, many of them have been traded before, and while it is disruptive to their day-to-day life, it’s something professionally they’re able to get through. I don’t think it’s going to be a factor.”

Asked if there is any reasonable way of believing the Sox can contend in 2017, Hahn said he’d have a hard time standing on the podium at SoxFest pitching that with a straight face.

“What we’re going to look for from this 2017 team is playing the game the way we want it played, the level of energy, level of focus, preparation,” Hahn said. “It’s a tough one. It’s tough to serve two masters.”

CHICAGO – Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler weren’t backing down after questioning the Bulls’ desire. Rajon Rondo wasn’t issuing any retractions for firing back at them.

There was an uneasy detente in place Friday for the three leaders of the scuffling Bulls, who now are answering questions about their ability to get along, not just why they aren’t winning more.

Wade and Butler were dropped from the starting lineup Friday night against the Miami Heat, while Rondo remained in a backup role.

All this comes after Rajon Rondo a two-day stretch when some of the best action of the Bulls’ season took place in front of microphones and at a keyboard.

Rondo said he “absolutely” felt he needed to defend the younger players after Wade and Butler teed off on the team after a rough loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday. He did just that on Instagram the next day while calling out the two stars and insinu-

ating that they were overriding Fred Hoiberg when it came to the game plan – a notion the coach shot down.

Wade insisted he has “no issue, no problems” with Rondo. He also made it clear he has no regrets about his comments, shaking his head no.

Butler said he has no issues with Rondo, that he has a right to speak his mind.

“I like it. I like controversy,” Butler said.

Hoiberg and management were not amused. With Wade and Butler coming off Dwyane Wade the bench, Paul Zipser and Doug McDermott started.

“It’s not how we want to operate,” general manager Gar Forman said of the uproar. “It is totally unacceptable, and we made it very clear to the players that were involved that it’s unacceptable. It’s a distraction that’s not needed. I think it’s a detriment to team growth. We have visited with the players that spoke out at length, and we have dealt with that internally. We’ve also visited with our team, and we’ve talked about the issue with our entire team.”

Forman spoke for about 90 seconds and did not answer questions.

The controversy is only the latest issue for a struggling team. The Bulls came into Friday’s game eighth in the

The benefits of six meals a day Dear Doctors: I’ve been hearing eating six small meals a day instead of three large ones is better for your health and even helps with weight loss. When I try it, though, I wind up feeling hungry all day.

Are six meals really better than three?

Dear Reader: Your question arises from recent news reports, but it has been debated for centuries in one form or another.

From the ancient Romans, who believed a single meal a day was the path to good health, to a Canadian study in the 1980s that touted the benefits of a “nibbling diet” of 17 snacks per day, the question of meal frequency has long been a topic of great fascination.

The premise behind eating smaller and more frequent meals is the control of blood sugar, also called blood glucose.

This refers to glucose, a type of sugar that is extracted from the food we eat. When digestion is complete, glucose is carried by the bloodstream and throughout the body to supply our cells and organs with energy.

When blood glucose levels drop, hunger and cravings spike. By eating six small meals a day, the thinking goes, you’re ensuring blood glucose is available at all times. By controlling the trigger for cravings, you’ll eat less and won’t be as likely to give in to the siren song of that bag of chips or chocolate bar.

But does it work?

While the logic is solid, results have been mixed. Participants in a study who ate six small meals showed no metabolic advantage over those who ate three large meals. What did separate them from the three-meal group was they reported higher levels of hunger and an increased desire to eat.

In fact, intriguing data from recent studies supports the idea intermittent fasting is beneficial. The shift in the way the body metabolizes food after a weekly fast as brief as 16 hours was found to have measurable health benefits.

As research continues and we add to the body of knowledge regarding meal frequency, we can fall back on what we know for sure – what you eat can play a significant role in maintaining good health. It’s the total calories consumed and the nutritional quality of those calories that matter.

However many meals a day you decide to eat, be sure to limit your calories to a healthy level. Processed foods, refined sugars and sugary soft drinks are empty and even dangerous calories, so steer clear.

Lean proteins, vegetables (specifically, leafy greens) and fresh fruit are the building blocks of a healthful diet. And we know you’ve heard it before, but we’ll say it again: For the best chance at ongoing good health, remember to exercise.

There is an unwritten rule you’re not supposed to date your friends’ exes, and frankly, this is the reason for it. I can’t stop your classmates’ judgment of you, and neither can you. But you can hold your head high and tell them you have learned a lesson.

Dear Abby: I am on a self-imposed strict diet to try to curb my weight. Often when my spouse and I are invited to a couple’s house, I will ask what they are serving and let them know about my diet. Is this rude? Would it be more rude to say nothing and eat beforehand?

I have fallen into the pitfalls of overeating, and I’m afraid if I let myself splurge for even one night it could spiral. It has happened before. The last time was at a party where all they had was pizza. When I politely declined, the host joked “I was too good for their food.”

Was I wrong? – Staying Strong In Tennessee Dear Staying Strong: It’s not rude to bring the fact you are watching your weight to your host’s attention when you are invited.

A considerate host should ask the guest if there are any food allergies, restrictions, etc.

If that doesn’t happen, it’s all right to inform the host if there are foods you need to avoid.

If guests prefer to lessen the temptation to pig out by eating before going to a party, that’s fine too.

P.S. As to that pizza party – were you warned in advance what kind of party it was? If not, your host was extremely rude to call attention to the fact you weren’t eating and to ridicule you by “joking” about it. Now that’s tacky.

DEAR ABBY One of my girlfriends Jeanne is dating my Phillips ex-boyfriend.

They just had a kid, and he started flirting with me. I’m not in a relationship, so I flirted back. Now I’m getting bullied nonstop because people say I’m gonna break them up. But shouldn’t they be mad at him more than me?

Why is everyone jumping down my throat? I didn’t do anything with him. It was just words. Either way, he’s the one in the relationship. He shouldn’t have done it in the first place, and yes, I admit it was wrong on my part, too. But not as wrong, right?

I need help, because I go to a small school, and everyone here wants to jump me now.

Now declarer cashes the club ace and king, discarding his two low diamonds.

Are the clubs 4-4? If so, South throws his diamond queen on the club seven. If not, he takes the diamond finesse. Altogether, the odds of success are an acceptable 66.36 percent.
