Brent Musburger a former sports POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS editor at the Daily Chronicle

For a short time in 1961, legendary sportscaster Brent Musburger was the Daily Chronicle’s sports editor.

Multiple people pointed that out this week when Musburger, 77, announced that he would call his last sporting event for ESPN on Jan. 31, then retire to help his family start a sports handicapping business in Las Vegas.

They tend to leave the Daily Chronicle out of Musburger’s career arc when his story is told, probably because Musburger doesn’t seem to have been on the staff for much more than a couple of months, writing but a handful of installments of a column titled “I May Be Wrong” on the paper’s sports page. His first byline I found was March 25 and the last – at least, the last I can find – was May 20.

One suspects that Musburger, then a 21-yearold who had come to the Midwest from Billings, Montana, might have been a bit bored here.

A column Musburger wrote on a rainy day for the April 3, 1961, Daily Chronicle begins “ ‘There are never dull days on a newspaper, just dull editors,’ somebody once lied.”

He then went on to write about how he’d spent the afternoon inspecting microfilm of 1908 editions of the Chronicle “without rhyme and even less reason.”

Another column April 10, 1961, was about a man from Billings who had died named T.W. Ashby, who “exemplified the type of sportsman that small communities need.”

Musburger’s voice is well-known to most

EDITOR’S NOTE Eric Olson sports fans, and you can hear his voice in reading the columns written by his younger self.

Musburger’s last column for the paper appeared May 20, 1961. It was about reporters at a “Hoo Hoo dinner” in Rockford – it had something to do with selling lumber – firing questions at Elvin Tappe, who was one of the Cubs’ “college of coaches” that ill-fated year.

“Finally he was asked ‘will this system eventually lead to a single manager?’

“Eyes twinkling he answered, ‘I think so, don’t you?’ ” Musburger eventually went on to write for the Chicago American newspaper – which is where people usually say his career began. He worked his way up to columnist at the American before jumping to TV and eventually becoming a network sports anchor and play-byplay man.

I tried to reach Musburger through ESPN to ask if he even remembers working here. I didn’t hear back Thursday, but if I do, I’ll let you know.

HUNDREDS HONOR 3 ASTRONAUTS LOST IN APOLLO FIRE 50 YEARS AGO

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Moonwalkers and dozens of others who took part in NASA’s storied Apollo program paid tribute Thursday to the three astronauts killed in a fire 50 years ago.

On the eve of the Apollo 1 anniversary, hundreds gathered at Kennedy Space Center to honor Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee.

They died during a countdown rehearsal at the launch pad, inside their burning spacecraft, on Jan. 27, 1967.

On Friday, NASA is opening an Apollo 1 exhibit featuring the hatch that prevented the three astronauts from escaping. It has been concealed for the past half-century along with the capsule.

The families of Grissom, White and Chaffee got an early look Wednesday evening at the display at the visitor complex, and liked what they saw.

“Really awesome,” said daughter Sheryl Chaffee, who just retired from NASA. “It’s very fitting.

We all feel like it’s about time.”

The Apollo 1 fire – NASA’s first space tragedy – has long been overshadowed by the 1986 Challenger and 2003 Columbia accidents. The 14 lost shuttle astronauts also were recognized Thursday, along with seven other U.S. astronauts killed in plane crashes.

The anniversaries of all three big accidents fall within days: Apollo 1 on Jan. 27, Challenger on Jan. 28 and Columbia on Feb. 1.

Business leaders honored at Sycamore Chamber of Commerce’s 102nd annual meeting

SYCAMORE – When Joel Barczak was told he would receive the 2016 Clifford Danielson Outstanding Citizen Award, he said he thought it was a “bad post-election joke.”

“We received our first business loan directly from Mr. Danielson,” he said. “As I’ve said before, I thought that was winning the Danielson Award.”

Barczak, owner of Blumen Gardens in Sycamore, accepted the award in front of nearly 400 people Thursday at St. Mary’s Memorial Hall during the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce’s 102nd annual meeting.

The meeting honored Barczak as well as four local businesses that contributed to Sycamore’s economic success in the past year.

Barczak said he was more nervous asking Danielson for a loan at the bank than he was while speaking to the crowd to accept the award in his name.

“He believed in us, and he gave us the possibility of opportunities,” Barczak said. “And I believe that’s what Sycamore is about, and that’s what makes this award so special to us.”

Rose Treml, executive director of the Sycamore Chamber, said the award was named in honor of Danielson, who was a leader in the Sycamore business community for 70 years.

“The award recognizes individuals who strive to the highest level of professional accomplishment and have devoted time and energy to helping others,” she said.

Mayor Ken Mundy recalled how Blumen Gardens has evolved since 1989, when it was a small garden design business, to the full service landscaping company with a year-round garden center that it is today.

“What began as a humble horticultural endeavor in the Barczaks’ backyard has grown into an award-winning landscape design business,” Mundy said. “It now inhabits over 4,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor space.”

Discover Diamond Award for restoring the historic fieldstone building it occupies at 351 N. Main St. The bank restored the more than 110-year-old building to its original look as a garage, and added faux gas pumps as a nod to its past use as a filling station. The building also has been home to several restaurants over the years.

Bank President Richard Katz said learning how the building has touched people’s lives over the years has been fascinating.

“Whether it is filling up their gas tanks or a remembrance of their car being repaired or their windshield being washed or breaking bread at one of the restaurants that have occupied it for many years, everybody has had an experience there,” Katz said.

Culver’s received the Spirit of Small Business Award for provid-

ing employment opportunities to adults with disabilities and students in Sycamore.

“This has never been a job for us,” owner Amanda Corona said.

“This has been what we love doing.

We could not do it without our team.”

Frontier Communications received the Chamber Champion Award for outstanding contributions to the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce.

“They continue to be an essential partner and resource for our community and the Sycamore Chamber,” Treml said. “Their employees have served as leaders for the chamber, and it is the dedication and involvement that allows us to succeed.”

Hy-Vee received the Outstanding Business of the Year Award for having a positive influence on

Sycamore’s economy.

Treml said Hy-Vee has “enhanced the quality of life in Sycamore” through job growth and investing and building collaborations in the community.

Chamber President Grant Goltz said he will be committing to his position on the chamber again for 2017.

He is the vice president of commercial lending at First State Bank in DeKalb and Sycamore.

Goltz said the chamber plans to reach out to local businesses and ask questions about what it can do to retain members. He said it also will continue providing networking opportunities and advocating for members.

“Going forward into 2017, we plan to do a lot more listening from our existing and potential chamber members,” he said.

County residents voice objections to proposed wind testing towers

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Steve Miller remembers how as a boy his family used to come to DeKalb County multiple times a year to view the pristine farmland in the area.

The threat of these farms being compromised by the development of wind turbines was one of the reasons that Miller, who lives in South Grove Township outside Kirkland, deceided to speak out against the construction of two wind testing towers in DeKalb County during a public hearing Thursday.

“I see this as a door opening up to bring in something that’s going to drive tourism away from this area, and it’s inevitably going to do the same for all those people with the lifelong dream of living here,” Miller said.

San Diego-based EDF Renewable Energy has applied for a special-use permit to construct the 200-foot towers to measure the velocity and direction of wind in two fields in the northwest part of the county, to see whether it is economically feasible to construct turbines in the area.

P.J. Saliterman, EDF’s development director, said it can take at least 12 months for initial results, but if it was found that it would be profitable to construct wind towers, the testing poles would stay up for another 18 months after building began.

As part of the application process, the hearing was held in the DeKalb County Administration Building in Sycamore, where opponents of the towers overflowed the conference room.

Teresa Phillips, who lives the near sites where the towers are proposed, said that county officials should deny the permits before the talks on wind testing snowball into the construction of hundreds of wind turbines.

“I don’t see why we should put a test tower up if, in the end, it’s going to affect so many of my neighbors and myself,” Phillips said. “I wouldn’t want a wind turbine in my front yard, back yard or sidewalk, so why even test if we don’t even want this in our neighborhood? I believe this would cause terrible value to my property.”

Saliterman said the Federal Aviation Administration has ruled that the towers would pose no hazard to aircraft. In addition, they would create no light, toxic runoff or noticeable noise and would not create any lasting nuisance to the com-

As these temporary testing towers could be in place for years, DeKalb County Planning, Zoning and Building Director Derek Hiland asked hearing officer Dale Clark, who presided over the meeting, to consider a reasonable date for removal of the towers.

Sandra Feldt of DeKalb said that the planning department should develop a master plan on wind energy to assess the commercial impact on the community.

“It seems to me we’re standing on the edge of a transition from an agribusiness county to an energy business county, and I think it would behoove the planning commission to see what kind of effect wind energy would have on the county as a whole,” Feldt said.

The Planning and Zoning Committee is expected to meet Feb. 22 to discuss the project, with the County Board making a final decision on granting the permits at a later date.

Bob was born on November 11, 1929 to William and Eloise (Slack) Young. He served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War from 1951 - 1953. On May 20, 1956, he married Shirley J. Stein in Rochelle. Bob worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 39 years and also owned and operated a successful printing company, Young Ideas, Ink. He was a life long member of the Rochelle Presbyterian Church and the Rochelle VFW Post 3878.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Shirley; his parents; and his brother, Bill.

Bob is survived by his five children, Cheryl (Alan) Alliston of Rochelle, Lori (Ron) Peterson of Malta, IL, Greg (Susan) Young, Jeff Young and Brad Young all of Rochelle; eight grandchildren; Quinn and Cody Peterson, Katelynn, Kersta, Teigan and MeLisa Young, and Eric and Noah Young.

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Dr. Bhagavatlal A. Morker, a longtime DeKalb County community physician who helped grow the largest internal medicine practice in the area, has died. He was 62.

Morker joined DeKalb Clinic in January 1995 and played a key role in growing the practice that is now KishHealth Physician Group, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael Kulisz said Thursday.

“He was dedicated to providing high-quality health care to all of his patients,” Kulisz wrote in a message to employees. “He embraced the community and was instrumental in bringing new physicians to the medical staff to better serve our patients. He will be truly missed by his colleagues and the patients he served.”

Morker’s death was unexpected, Kulisz said.

Kulisz said many of Morker’s family members also were local doctors. He described Morker as being soft-spoken, a collaborator and being supportive.

KishHealth System bought the DeKalb Clinic in 2014. At that time, Bhagavatlal staff at the clinic were seeing about A. Morker 16,000 patients a year. It employed about 125 people, including 20 physicians and 10 contract physicians.

Morker had served as the medical director at Pine Acres Rehab & Living Center, a 119-bed skilled nursing facility in DeKalb, since 2003. He was the primary care doctor for many of the people at Pine Acres, but also took an active role in assuring quality care standards at the facility, Pine Acres Administrator Dalena Kemna-Kahn.

She described him as kind, generous with his

time and a strong advocate for patients.

Those qualities endeared him to patients, family members, nurses and other medical support staff.

“Everybody liked him,” Kemna-Kahn said. “Everyone respected him.”

As news of Morker’s death spread, praise for him and sympathy for his family poured in via social media from former patients and others.

Morker graduated from Government Medical College, Surat, South Gujarat University, India, in 1977. He did both his internship and residency at Meridia Huron Hospital in Ohio, according to Healthgrades.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Anderson Funeral Home, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb.

KishHealth Physician Group, 1850 Gateway Drive, Sycamore, will be closed Saturday. All appointments for that day have been canceled.

DeKalb slaying suspect’s lower bond request denied Lawyer claims woman killed boyfriend in self-defense after ‘long period of domestic abuse’

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb woman facing murder charges wants a judge to lower her bond so she can live at a shelter for victims of domestic abuse while awaiting trial.

Kela M. Moss, 26, of 419 S. First St., DeKalb, was charged in November with first-degree murder in connection with the death of her boyfriend, 25-year-old Brendon Brown, who shared an apartment with her.

Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert denied the request Thursday, but Moss’ lawyer said he will continue to work to get his client out of jail.

Moss’ attorney, Bob Nolan, argued

Thursday that his client’s bond should be reduced from $750,000 to $50,000. He said Moss’ family has raised $5,000 to get her out of jail. He also said that she had Kela M. been receiving counselMoss ing from Safe Passage, a nonprofit organization in DeKalb County dedicated to reducing and preventing domestic violence and sexual assault.

Nolan has said Moss was acting in self-defense and that Brown’s death “was the culmination of a long period of domestic abuse.” Brown’s family has disputed those claims.

Nolan said the director hadn’t been available Thursday. After the hearing, Nolan said he would try again.

Brown was out on bail at the time of the homicide. He was charged Oct. 14 with robbery and domestic battery for allegedly hitting Moss, pulling her hair and stealing her keys, purse and phone, according to court documents.

When Brown was released on a recognizance bond, he was ordered to stay away from Moss and her apartment.

Brown was arrested again Nov. 4 after police found that he had violated that court order.

Moss is next due in court Feb. 7.

With eye on ’18, Rauner says ‘Don’t blame me’

The Democratic Governors Association, which considers Illinois a top-tier race, suggested Rauner’s State of the State could have been summed up in four words: “Getting worse every day.”

And state Sen. Kwame Raoul, who isn’t ruling out a bid, scoffed at Rauner’s attempts to shift blame to others. He noted Illinois was paying its bills within 30 days before Rauner took office; as of this week the state’s backlog of overdue bills is almost $11 billion and some vendors are waiting months to get paid.

“The only variable that’s changed ... is the fact that we have a different governor and that’s Bruce Rauner,” Raoul said. “He wears the shirt for that.”

Rauner deposited $50 million of his own money into his campaign fund last month. Republicans said the money was intended to send a message to potential challengers – including deep-pocketed businessmen J.B. Pritzker and Chris Kennedy – that taking him on would not be easy.

SPRINGFIELD – With crises mounting around him, Gov. Bruce Rauner’s strategy for fending off potential Democratic challengers and keeping his job in 2018 includes stressing the bright spots while blaming others for the things going horribly wrong.

As a Republican in a solidly Democratic state, the wealthy former private equity investor would have been one of the country’s most endangered GOP incumbents even under the best of circumstances. Adding to his task are a state budget impasse that has dragged on for most of his two years in office, decimating many social service agencies and creating billions more in debt, and a labor dispute that has Illinois’ largest public-employee union holding its first strike-authorization vote.

Rauner didn’t make more than a fleeting reference to the budget until the end of his annual State of the State address Wednesday. Instead, he highlighted accomplishments such as ethics reforms, increased funding for schools and improved cybersecurity of state records and said he was “deeply optimistic” about Illinois’ future.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois hunters harvested about 11,000 fewer deer during the recent hunting seasons compared with past seasons.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources numbers show hunters harvested a preliminary total of 144,150 deer during the 2016-2017 seasons, including archery, youth, firearm, muzzleloader and other seasons. That number was 155,229 during the 20152016 seasons. Increases were seen in the youth and muzzleloader-only deer seasons. And although the archery and traditional firearm seasons had the most deer taken, the numbers were below last year’s harvests.

Man convicted of killing wife with baseball bat

ROCKFORD – Jurors have convicted a northern Illinois man of killing his wife with a baseball bat in 2012 and dumping her body in the Rock River.

Todd Smith was found guilty of murder Wednesday in a Rockford courtroom.

He is to be sentenced March 22, when he faces a term of life in prison. Katrina Smith’s mother, Vikki Nalevac told the Rockford Register Star that her relatives “finally have justice. We can breathe now.”

Prosecutors said Katrina Smith wanted out of her marriage to Todd Smith, but he wouldn’t let her go and even tracked her with a device under her car.

Smith’s public defender said the case was filled with sloppy police work and described Todd Smith as a loving husband trying to preserve his relationship with his wife.

Business owner sentenced in Medicaid fraud scheme

SPRINGFIELD – Federal prosecutors said an Illinois man has been sentenced to five years in prison for fraudulently overbilling Medicaid an estimated $4.7 million for the medical transport of patients, including some who had died.

Sixty-eight-year-old Gregory D. Toran of Hazel Crest also was ordered to pay $4.7 million in restitution.

The judge who sentenced Toran on Monday allowed him to remain free on bond until the federal Bureau of Prisons directs him to self-report to begin his sentence.

Toran owned IBT Transportation, a nonemergency medical transport company, with 44-year-old Tina Kimbrough of Berwyn.

In August, Kimbrough was sentenced to 30 months in prison for her role in the scheme. Kimbrough previously pleaded guilty to participating in the conspiracy with Toran.

Kimbrough was ordered to pay $4 million restitution.

Family mourns student pulled from school pool

CHICAGO – Family members said a 14-year-old Chicago boy who died after being pulled from a high school swimming pool loved school and had hopes of one day becoming a train conductor.

Delta Juarez, who identified herself as Rosario Gomez’s aunt, told the Chicago Tribune that the boy was “a really wellloved child.”

The Chicago Fire Department said the boy was pulled from the pool Wednesday at Kennedy High School before firefighters arrived.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police are investigating the circumstances of the boy’s death.

His family said Rosario, who was autistic, was a special needs student at the school.

The Chicago Public Schools said crisis interveners headed for the school to counsel students. The Chicago SunTimes reports an autopsy is planned Thursday.

Trump proposes tax on Mexican imports

WASHINGTON – Determined to wall off America’s border with Mexico, President Donald Trump triggered a diplomatic clash and a fresh fight over trade Thursday as the White House proposed a 20 percent tax on imports from the key U.S. ally, and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto abruptly scrapped next week’s trip to Washington.

The swift fallout signaled a remarkable souring of relations between Washington and one of its most important international partners just days into the new administration. The U.S. and Mexico conduct some $1.6 billion a day in cross-border trade, and cooperate on everything from migration to anti-drug enforcement to major environmental issues.

At the heart of the dispute is Trump’s insistence that Mexico will pay for construction of the massive wall he has promised along the southern U.S. border. Trump on Wednesday formally ordered construction of the wall.

The plan was a centerpiece of Trump’s election campaign, although he never specified how Mexico would fund the project or how he would compel payments if Pena Nieto’s government refused.

The two leaders had been scheduled to discuss the matter at the White House next week. But Pena Nieto took to Twitter on Thursday to say he had informed the White House he would not be coming.

In a speech in Philadelphia later Thursday, Trump cast the cancellation as a mutual decision. He said that “unless Mexico is going to treat the United States fairly, with respect, such a meeting would be fruitless, and I want to go a different route. We have no choice.”

A 20 percent tariff would represent a huge tax increase on imports to the U.S., raising the likelihood of costs being passed on to consumers. Half of all non-agricultural goods enter the U.S. duty free, ac-

cording to the office of the U.S. Trade Representative. The other half face import tariffs averaging 2 percent.

Mexico is one of America’s biggest trade partners, and the U.S. is the No. 1 buyer from that country, accounting for about 80 percent of Mexican exports. A complete rupture in ties could be damaging to the U.S. economy and disastrous for Mexico’s. And major harm to Mexico’s economy would surely spur more people to risk deportation, jail or even death to somehow cross the border to the U.S. – undercutting Trump’s major goal of stopping illegal immigration.

House GOP lawmakers and aides interpreted Spicer’s comments on a 20 percent border tax as an endorsement of a key plank of their own tax plan, which Speaker Paul Ryan has been working to sell to the president. The House GOP “border adjustability” approach would tax imports and exempt exports as a way of trying to help U.S. exporters and raise revenue.

Earlier this month, Trump called that concept confusing.

And during the White House’s cleanup efforts Thursday, Spicer wouldn’t say whether Trump agreed with the border adjustment tax being considered by the House GOP.

Reviving the pipelines President Donald Trump is making short work of campaign promises, and Tuesday he signed executive orders reviving the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines. The resurrection is good news for the economy, but one question is whether he’ll sink the projects with his protectionist impulses.

Trump signed an executive order inviting TransCanada to apply again for a permit for the Keystone XL pipeline, which the Obama administration rejected to indulge the anti-carbon obsessions of Democratic campaign donors. Another Trump directive aims to expedite the Dakota Access pipeline, which is 90 percent finished but was halted by President Barack Obama amid protests. A federal judge ruled that the government had met its legal obligations, but the Obama administration suspended work anyway.

Such carve outs for progressive constituencies are one reason voters rejected Democrats in November, and the pipelines promise broader prosperity. Keystone is predicted to spin off 20,000 construction and manufacturing jobs and add $3 billion to GDP. The pipeline could move 830,000 barrels a day along the route from Alberta to Nebraska; up to 100,000 would come from North Dakota, where a glut of crude has to travel by rail to reach refineries built to process it. The efficiencies will ripple across the oil and gas industry.

The Keystone order directs the State Department to make a recommendation within 60 days for a prompt approval, although environmental groups will file lawsuits in every eligible jurisdiction.

The objections are specious: Obama’s State Department concluded on several occasions that Keystone would have no meaningful effect on climate or emissions. Moving oil by pipeline emits less carbon and is safer than trains.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said Trump is looking to ensure taxpayers the best possible deal. Reminder: Taxpayers pay nothing. The State Department estimated that when Keystone is finished and pumping oil, local governments will collect more than $55 million a year in property taxes. About 70 percent of the resulting refined products from Keystone would stay in the U.S., which will push down gas prices as another benefit, according to a study from IHS. Meanwhile on the livefeed for “The Resistance,” Senate Democrats are proposing a trillion dollars in direct federal spending on public works – and no doubt hoping to persuade Trump to go along and divide the GOP. But Republicans in Congress should not agree to a dollar of new such spending without more streamlining of permitting.

Private investment projects such as Keystone and Dakota Access are the superior route to creating jobs and boosting incomes, which Trump has long said is his first priority.

Keystone XL still worth building Keystone XL is back – along with the usual misconceptions about its virtues and dangers.

There should be no doubt, however, that President Donald Trump’s executive order advancing the project is a good thing.

The reason is simple: By carrying heavy crude from the oil sands of Alberta, Canada, to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast and beyond, Keystone XL would strengthen U.S. energy security.

Keystone would not, as Trump suggests, create a lot of work for Americans. It will take maybe 10,000 people to build the pipeline, and those jobs will be temporary. Only a few dozen will be needed once it is operational.

At the same time, many environmentalists’ warnings about Keystone are exaggerated. Pipelines are a safe, reliable and efficient way to carry oil.

Given that Keystone would be built to the latest safety requirements, it would be less spill-prone than the tens

of thousands of miles of older pipelines that crisscross the U.S. Keystone opponents also make more universal objections. Crude extracted from oil sands generates more than its share of greenhouse gases, because more energy is needed to remove the sand and dilute it for transport. Technology is already limiting this problem, however. Moreover, oil-sands emissions can be offset with reductions in other parts of the economy, a likely scenario now that Canada has agreed to reduce carbon emissions as part of the Paris agreement.

Finally, many environmentalists argue that pipelines such as Keystone only encourage the further extraction and use of fossil fuels, which contribute to global warming. Regardless of whether this will prove to be true, the reality is that there aren’t enough sources of clean energy to meet the world’s needs. And to protect against price shocks, it is preferable for the U.S. to get its oil from do-

mestic sources or from friendly neighbors such as Canada.

With or without Keystone, crude will continue to be extracted from the Alberta oil sands. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau approved two new pipelines designed to carry that oil through Canada to world markets.

Trump’s executive order does not amount to approval for Keystone – the company behind the project will have to submit another application – and there is always a danger, Trump being Trump, that he will make unreasonable demands. On Tuesday, he suggested that he wants the pipeline to use only American steel, and in the past he has vowed to demand a share of the pipeline’s profits.

This would be unwise. Better not to jeopardize a decision that can be justified as a matter of both energy and economic policy and see to it that the pipeline, now almost a decade on the drawing board, is finally built.

VIEWS Connie Schultz I’ve been thinking of Miss Nelson a lot during the past few days – since Inauguration Day, to be precise. It hurts to the marrow of my bones to say this, but there’s no use in pretending that we don’t have a chronic liar in the White House.

On Tuesday, I made a list of newspaper headlines on President Donald Trump’s continued lie about nonexistent voter fraud.

The New York Times: “Trump Won’t Back Down From His Voting Fraud Lie. Here Are the Facts.”

The Washington Post: “Citing no new evidence, Trump continues to say there were millions of illegal votes.”

The Boston Globe: “White House defends illegal voting claim, without evidence.”

Los Angeles Times: “Trump’s unproven claims of widespread voter fraud trip up White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer.”

Chicago Tribune: “White House doubles down on Trump’s claim that

millions voted illegally, but provides no evidence.”

The Wall Street Journal: “Trump’s Claim of Massive Illegal Voting Gets Little Support From GOP Lawmakers.”

This is our new reality.

We still have our holdouts. NPR listeners wanted to know why Mary Louise Kelly reported on Trump’s many lies but wouldn’t call them what they are: lies.

On “Morning Edition,” Kelly explained that she relies on The Oxford English Dictionary’s definition of “lie.”

“A false statement made with intent to deceive,” Kelly said, “ ‘intent’ being the key word there. Without the ability to peer into Donald Trump’s head, I can’t tell you what his intent was. I can tell you what he said and how that squares – or doesn’t – with facts.”

At what age is adulthood assumed and a person held accountable for his words? Unless he admits he lied, we’re supposed to think he’s just flirting?

True, I can’t peer into the dark recesses of Trump’s head – thank you, Jesus – but that doesn’t mean I can’t discern his intentions by the content of his words.

He lies, but he may not mean it?

That’s like someone hitting me in the head with a baseball bat and then assuring me on the ambulance ride that he didn’t mean to make me bleed. At some

point, one of us has to state the obvious because the medical staff and the police are definitely going to have their assumptions.

Every time I hear another lie come out of Trump’s mouth – about his inauguration crowd (smaller than Barack Obama’s and the Women’s March), voter fraud (it didn’t exist), the media’s accusing him of attacking the intelligence community (he compared them to the Nazis) – I feel as if I’m back in junior high school trying to break up with the boy my mother warned me wasn’t stable.

“You told me you love me.”

“I never said that.”

“You did. I heard you. Everybody knows it.”

“I’m sorry. I never said that.”

“We should drink each other’s blood.”

“I’m going to call Dad now.”

Enough of this cat dance around what most of America already knows.

With apologies to Miss Nelson, we in the media must call this what it is: Our president is a chronic and unapologetic liar.

And this is not normal.

Her name was Miss Nelson.

I don’t recall her first name. She didn’t seem to need one.

She taught fifth grade at West Elementary School in Ashtabula, Ohio.

In the fall of 1967, my mother dropped me off in her classroom like a failed adoption. My mother would deny that characterization, but we all knew that Miss Nelson had a reputation. She was tall and wide with a voice that carried and a mind inclined to use it. I’d never seen anybody like her.

You know how this story goes. She also had a heart bigger than a Dodge wagon. She hid it well in the first few weeks, but soon enough she was holding after-class sewing sessions for all of us girls. She claimed to be teaching us how to make clothes for our Barbie dolls, but it was just an excuse to gather us round and talk to us about how to be citizens of the world.

She believed diagramming sentences builds character and profanity is the sign of a diminished mind. She hated the word “liar,” declaring it the worst thing you could ever say about a person. If he was a liar, there was no hope for him.

All these years later, I’m still so reluctant to use the word. Some people you never stop wanting to avoid disappointing.

Sycamore UMC hosting annual pancake supper DAILY CHRONICLE

The Men’s Club of Sycamore United Methodist Church is preparing for its 62nd annual pancake supper.

The men plan to serve more than 650 meals at this year’s event, which will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 2.

The event raises more than $3,000, and the Men’s Club donates the proceeds to needed areas within the church and community. A few of the causes are Bible school supplies, a food pantry, scholarships for both high school youth and adult mission trips, Pay-It-Forward House, Camp

Reynoldswood and selected church improvement projects.

Tickets can be purchased from members of the Men’s Club on Sunday morning between services, or purchased at the door.

The all-you-can-eat menu includes pancakes and syrup, sausage, scrambled eggs, applesauce, coffee and milk. Sugar-free syrup also is available.

Tickets cost $7 for adults and $3.50 for children ages 5 to 10. Children younger than 5 eat for free.

Area youth named to advisory council DAILY CHRONICLE A group of 23 high school juniors and seniors from DeKalb and Kane counties have been selected as members of state Rep. Bob Pritchard’s Youth Advisory Council.

The group meets monthly during the school year to discuss state issues, study local government in Illinois and explore careers in public service. Pritchard, R-Hinckley, has sponsored the council each year to gain the perspectives of future voters on important state issues and encourage their involvement in public policy formation and operations of local government.

“We discuss our Constitution and how government is supposed to function and then visit Springfield to see how it actually works,” he said in a news release.

The council also supplements

what students learn about government in school by focusing on local units of government – such as city councils, county boards and park districts – their operations and services to the community. Guest speakers include lobbyists, elected state officials, government staff and statehouse reporters.

“They explain why they got involved in public service, their responsibilities and observations about government operations,” he said in the release.

“I ask schools to nominate members for the council who are interested in public service and are likely to become future community leaders.

Too little attention is paid to the role of citizens in a democracy and preparation to be responsible voters,” he said in the release. “That was part of my reason in co-sponsoring legislation a few years ago to increase the

focus on civics education in school.”

Bethel Assembly of God Church, 131 W. Elm St. in Sycamore, will host the 2017 Missions Convention in February.

There will be a missions emphasis each Sunday beginning Feb. 12. The DeKalb Area Toastmasters Club honored members Monday with certificates highlighting their length of membership and Toastmasters International pins.

DeKalb Area Toastmasters recently achieved Distinguished Club. Out of 82 clubs in the district, DeKalb has the second-highest number of new members this year.

The 4-H Teen Teachers were trained by extension educator Lisa Hepker on ages and stages of development, positive youth development, experiential learning, behavior management, presentation skills and read aloud teaching strategies.

In December, the teen teachers were recognized for their efforts. A trip to Chicago was made possible through a grant Hepker received from the Illinois 4-H Foundation.

Stallworth brings rebounding into Challenge

Sometimes it’s six.

However many points Sycamore senior post player Keyshawn Stallworth puts up, he’s going to be a force on the boards.

“He’s got a knack for the ball, a real feel for it,” Sycamore coach Ryan Picolotti said. “He knows where it’s going and he can really get after it at times and beat guys to spots. ... He’s accepted his role of that energy guy getting a lot of rebounds, and he’s getting better at getting inside and scoring.”

Stallworth and the Spartans (8-10 overall, 2-4 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) head to the NIU Convocation Center to face rival DeKalb (13-6, 5-0) in the First National Challenge at 7:30 p.m. today.

Stallworth had eight rebounds in the loss – right about his average for the season.

Picolotti said one of the factors that stung the Spartans against the Barbs last time around was rebounding – Sisson finished with five offensive rebounds.

“Second half, Sisson really, really hurt us on the boards, then after that, a couple guys got rebounds,” Picolotti said. “All five guys have to defensive rebound.”

The 6-foot-5 Stallworth said he hopes he, Connor Weckerly and the rest of the Spartans’ front court will be able to tie up the 6-6 Sisson.

“With how big Sisson is, I feel like we have to step up big in rebounding, or at least stop him from getting rebounds and let someone else get rebounds,” Stallworth said. “For Connor, as big as he is, it’ll be an easy stop for him.”

Stallworth is the third-leading scorer on the Spartans, averaging 10 points a game.

He scored 37 earlier this season

against Kaneland and 19 last week against Rochelle. Picolotti said he’s seen his fair share of double teams this season.

“He’s having a nice year,” Picolotti said. “He’s a senior and he’s really stepped up. He’s a kid who’s kind of progressed through the program – didn’t play a whole lot the first three years but has really come on here.”

The Spartans have lost eight of their past 10 games, but are coming off a win Tuesday against Aurora Central Catholic.

Stallworth said beating the Chargers is a springboard for the rest of the season.

“We’re sitting at 8-10, which I feel like we should be way better than that,” Stallworth said. “But with the win against ACC, that’s going to bring us a lot of momentum into Friday.

“We’ve been preparing a lot, and I feel like it’s going to be a real good game,” he said. “I really do think we’re going to win that game.”

DeKalb, Sycamore set for rivalry doubleheader

ecarifio@shawmedia.com The last time the DeKalb girls basketball team faced off against Sycamore, the Barbs allowed 21 points in the first quarter.

Both teams’ coaches said the Barbs have improved since that game, as the two teams are set for a rematch today at the NIU Convocation Center.

The game tips at 6 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow.

“They’re a different team, and we’re a different team,” Sycamore coach Adam Wickness said. “We’re going to approach it as if we’ve never played this team before. Yeah, we’ll know some tendencies of players because we have played them, but we have to have the mindset we’re not taking anything for granted. They play hard, and any team that plays hard has a chance on any given night.”

The Spartans led the first goaround, 27-5, at halftime after holding the Barbs scoreless in the second quarter.

Sycamore pushed the lead to 34-8 before DeKalb started scoring more in the 50-31 loss Dec. 2.

Kate Majerus scored 18 and Kylie Feuerbach 10 for the Spartans (15-7, 6-4). DeKalb coach Elliot Whitefield said slowing the two of them down is key for his Barbs (5-19, 1-8).

“I’m excited for the girls to see how much we’ve improved from the last time,” Whitefield said. “If we can protect the ball and contain a couple of their best players, we could be right there. My girls are up for the challenge.”

Whitefield said the Barbs need to take away the driving lanes, particularly for Feuerbach, while keeping an eye on Majerus from long range.

“Our defense has tightened up, but it’s still not close to where I’m expecting it to be after a year or so,” the first-year coach said. “But it’s better than it was, that’s for sure. I don’t expect them to score 21. I told the girls the first team to 40 may end up winning.”

On the boys’ side, the Barbs (13-6, 5-0) are coming off a 56-50 win in the first meeting against the Spartans (810, 2-4). DeKalb trailed, 25-11, midway through the second quarter but built up a seven-point lead in the second half.

Michael Mitchell made four 3-pointers in the win for DeKalb, finishing with 13 points.

Sycamore coach Ryan Picolotti said the Barbs began to dictate the pace of play in the second quarter – not to mention some killer 3-pointers by Mitchell and the Barbs – and that changed the flow of the game.

“We got off to a good start; we were up midway through the second,” Picolotti said. “But we lost their two good shooters, and they got some momentum there. Their defensive pressure also got to us a little bit. We didn’t necessarily turn the ball over, but we just didn’t get into our offense a lot, and they hurt us on the boards in the second half.”

Both games will be played on NIU’s court in front of a packed house.

“I told the girls to cherish it but don’t be in awe of it,” Whitefield said.

“It’s still played between the lines.

Crawford is 6-5-1 with a pedestrian .903 save percentage since returning from an appendectomy that cost him three weeks. Darling entered Thursday’s game 8-4-1 with a .936 save percentage since Crawford’s surgery, including a 30-save shutout in Boston in his last start.

But there’s no goalie controversy. It’s Crawford’s net.

“I thought he probably had five good periods in a row, [but] the last period, a couple got by him,” Quenneville said.

“But other than that, I thought he was moving, he was sharp, he looked quick, he was anticipating well. [Darling]’s last performance is probably the biggest reason.”

Roster report: Michal Rozsival was “banged up” during Wednesday’s practice, but isn’t expected to miss much time. Marcus Kruger returned to the lineup for the first time since injuring his hand Dec. 30. He centered the third line and was back in his usual spot on the penalty kill. Rondo’s biting Instagram post puts Bulls future in question

Always.

And now it could be his last word in a Bulls uniform, according to one source.

As of Thursday evening, the Bulls front office was so angered by an Instagram post by Rondo in which he retaliated on teammates Jimmy Butler and Dwyane Wade that they were seriously weighing the idea of removing Rondo from the team and buying out the remainder of his contract.

One day after Butler and Wade blasted their teammates after a loss to the Atlanta Hawks, even questioning their heart and understanding of their roles, Rondo took to his Instagram account and had a drop-the-mic moment directed at both players.

First, Rondo posted a picture of himself from his Celtics days, along

with former teammates Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, and then wrote: “My vets would never go to the media. They would come to the team. My vets didn’t pick and choose when they wanted to bring it. They brought it every time they stepped in the gym whether it was practice or a game.

They didn’t take days off. My vets didn’t care about their numbers. My vets played for the team. When we lost, they wouldn’t blame us. They took responsibility and got in the gym. They showed the young guys what it meant to work. Even in Boston when we had the best record in the league, if we lost a game, you could hear a pin drop on the bus.

“They showed us the seriousness of the game. My vets didn’t have an influence on the coaching staff. They couldn’t change the plan because it didn’t work for them. I played under one of the greatest coaches, and he held everyone accountable.

“It takes 1-15 to win. When you iso-

late everyone, you can’t win consistently. I may be a lot of things, but I’m not a bad teammate. My goal is to pass what I learned along. The young guys work. They show up. They don’t deserve blame. If anything is questionable, it’s the leadership.’’

While Rondo didn’t name Wade and Butler it was a clear assassination of both.

Here’s why: “My vets would never go to the media.” Well, obviously both Butler and Wade did that.

Wade basically stopped practicing with the team by December, and has taken a handful of games off, mostly on back-to-backs, so this was a clear shot at Wade.

change the plan because it didn’t work for them.’’ For the second season, Fred Hoiberg has had to restructure his offense on the fly because both Butler and Wade didn’t feel it worked.

“I played under one of the greatest coaches, and he held everyone accountable.” Rondo played under Doc Rivers, and has been butting heads with Fred Hoiberg since the coach benched him. However, a source said that Rondo has grown tired of what he feels has been preferential treatment with Butler and Wade compared to everyone else.

If the Bulls flat-out rid themselves of Rondo, they would have to eat the remainder of his $14 million contract this season, as well as $3 million of the $13.3 million he could have made next season.

Rondo was already suspended for one game earlier this season after throwing a towel in the face of assistant coach Jim Boylen.

Eighty-three times in a row, spanning more than two-and-a-half seasons, the Blackhawks turned a two-period lead into at least a point. Seventy-eight of those times, they came away with two points. It was one of the more remarkable streaks in the league, proving that the Hawks were among the game’s ultimate closers.

Not anymore.

The Hawks gave up two goals in a 33-second span late in the third period and lost to the Winnipeg Jets, 5-3, on Thursday night. The loss was eerily reminiscent of Tuesday’s loss to Tampa Bay, when Tyler Johnson scored twice in a 30-second span in the third period to snap the Hawks’ 78-0-5 run when leading through two periods.

“We could have had four points, and we [came] away with none,” defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson said. “That hurts.

Especially this one, right before the [AllStar] break. Kind of leaves a bitter taste going into the break, not [going to] enjoy it as much. Really disappointed about this one.”

The last game before the All-Star break is notorious for teams mailing it in on their way to a desperately needed weekend off. But while the Hawks were looking forward to a little rest, the Win-

nipeg Jets had their full attention. Losing three games by a combined score of 9-2 will have that effect.

And while the Hawks played far better Thursday than in the previous three meetings – they fired 41 shots at Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and rallied from an early 2-0 deficit after yet another pair of quick-strike goals, these

“We played a lot better, the way we needed to play, but obviously it wasn’t there for a full 60 minutes,” Duncan Keith said. “For whatever reason, they’ve had our number this year.”

Giving up two goals in less than a minute three times in two games was particularly galling for the Hawks, who pride themselves on bearing down for “big shifts” after goals, and in the first and last minutes of periods.

The Hawks turned that 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead through two periods on goals by Keith (on a power play), Nick Schmaltz and Tanner Kero. But just 4:03 from a happy start to the break, it all fell apart again.

“It’s going to kind of ruin the break a little bit,” Hjalmarsson said. “This one’s going to take a while to swallow.”

Pardon dominates in Wildcats win

EVANSTON – Dererk Pardon dominated with 19 points and a career-high 22 rebounds to lead Northwestern to a 73-61 victory over struggling Nebraska on Thursday night.

Pardon, a sophomore, had the first 20-rebound game for Northwestern since Evan Eschmeyer grabbed 21 against Penn State on Jan. 20, 1999.

Vic Law scored 20, and the Wildcats (17-4, 6-2 Big Ten) won their fifth straight to match their longest streak in conference play since the 1965-66 season.

Tai Webster led Nebraska with 23

points. Glynn Watson Jr. scored 14, but the Cornhuskers (9-11, 3-5) dropped their fifth in a row after a 3-0 start in the Big Ten. The Wildcats were leading, 57-53, when Law hit two free throws with less than five minutes remaining in the game to start a 16-1 run.

Bryant McIntosh stole a pass that hit Nebraska’s Evan Taylor and fed Law for an alley-oop. Cornhuskers coach Tim Miles picked up a technical after pointing to a spot where he thought Pardon stepped out of bounds after grabbing a defensive rebound.

That led to two free throws for McIntosh, making it 63-53 with 4:12 remaining.

MOBILE, Ala. – The head start that Ryan Pace and John Fox have on getting to know some of the top prospects for the 2017 NFL Draft is not lost on the Bears brass.

“We knew this would be a benefit coming down here. But being here fullfledged has been huge,” said Pace. “Being in the meetings, not just with our coaches but all our scouts have been in the meetings too, has been really good. Our coaches have done a good job kind of creating an environment where with the players, we’re getting them to talk more. So we’re really getting a good feel for their football intelligence.

That’s been good.”

In those meeting rooms, it’s not simply how well the players absorb the information they’re given by Bears coaches. While other teams are limited to interviews with players, the Bears can put a prospect on the spot and see how he responds.

“Instead of our coaches standing in front of the room and talking the whole time, it’s hearing the players talk more and kind of going over things,” Pace said. “You can feel their football intelligence the more they talk. That’s been the best part. We’ve got different scouts in each position room. So that’s been good.”

This is the first time Fox has coached the Senior Bowl and he reiterated the importance of seeing the players in a practice setting.

“A bunch of it is just how they inter-

act with their teammates, the emotion they practice with, some of the things you maybe don’t see on game tape when you’re studying college players,” Fox said. “It’s how they learn, how coachable they are. Are they not making the same mistakes over. We’ve actually gotten to do three different film sessions as far as evaluating a practice.”

When the position coaches go through their drills with the prospects they can look for certain things that will tell them and the scouts something about that player’s skill set, adding another line to a scouting report.

“There’s ways to isolate these guys into athletic movements that we want to see,” Pace explained. “We were just talking about that with the corners.

There’s things that you can do that can kind of expose them, whether it’s their hip stiffness or their plant-and-drive quickness. Those guys will do things to kind of exploit that, good or bad.”

When Pace isn’t in meetings or watching practice, he’s watching video of veteran free agents, preparing to add talent to the Bears in early March.

The grind is the norm for the former scout, and Pace lives for the actual football that takes place in Mobile.

“This is one of my favorite parts right here, because it’s real football,” he said. “It’s not just combine work.

It’s not guys in shorts. It’s real football.

We get to see their instincts and their toughness and their physicality and how fast they’re picking up our offense or defense. So this is probably my favorite part.”

24 Study links alcohol to melanoma risk Dear Doctor: I always choose white wine over red. But a recent study linking white wine to increased melanoma risk made me reconsider. Am I overreacting?

Dear Reader: This is a difficult question without a simple answer – so let’s start with some basics. Alcohol metabolizes into the chemical acetaldehyde, which can cause DNA mutations that lead to cancer.

To date, alcohol has been associated with an increased risk of cancers of the breast, colon, liver and pancreas.

A 2014 analysis of many different studies published in the British Journal of Dermatology found an 18 percent increase in melanoma among people who drank more than one alcoholic beverage a day, regardless of the type. This analysis was based on retrospective studies, which are studies assessing people’s past habits after a diagnosis has been made.

Prospective studies follow patients before the diagnosis of disease. The research to which you’re referring was that type of study, and was published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention. For their analysis, researchers looked at data on disease outcomes from three studies of health care professionals and tied those outcomes to potential risk factors. The three studies combined followed a total of more than 210,000 people over a period of more than 18 years. In the studies, participants were asked to state their level of alcohol consumption and also to state what type of alcohol they consumed.

Researchers found overall, 1,374 people (less than 1 percent) ultimately were diagnosed with melanoma. Those who drank alcohol, however, had a 14 percent increase in the rate of melanoma, and that number increased to 21 percent in those who had one or more drink a day. Note that people

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley who drank more alcohol also reported higher rates of smoking, caffeine intake and previous severe sunburns. The authors adjusted for this, so the data still appears relevant.

So yes, alcohol appears to slightly increase the risk of melanoma.

As for wine, some types – especially white wines – have more acetaldehyde and thus could have a greater ability to increase cancer risk than other types of alcohol. But when the authors looked at the type of alcohol consumed, the results between the three studies varied tremendously.

In one study, of male health care professionals, the researchers found a greater rate of melanoma among men who drank white wine one to three times a month compared to those who drank white wine two to four times a week. Even taking that finding into account, the authors overall found a 13 percent increased rate of melanoma with each drink of white wine a day. They did not find such a high rate with other types of drinks.

In summary, drinking alcohol does appear to slightly increase the risk of melanoma. While this study on the impact of white wine does not appear convincing, white wine drinkers should consider the fact acetaldehyde is carcinogenic and white wine has more acetaldehyde.
