She said the loosely organized demonstration had about 60,000 people register online

by Thursday, then a quarter of a million men and women, some with their children along, gathered in the center of Chicago “with the intention of reminding all the newly elected politicians that the U.S. Constitution guarantees rights to all the people.”

Shelton, who is president of the League of Women Voters in DeKalb County, is no stranger to Kay political activism and demonShelton strations, but said she had never participated in anything on such a scale before.

The demonstration was held in unison with the Women’s March on Washington, where it was estimated more than 500,000 people gathered to send a message to the new administration.

Shelton said she was impressed by the mix of people, the various messages on the homemade signs carried by participants and the broad range of issues that were raised.

Barry Schrader She listed some of them: women’s rights, including equal pay for equal work; women’s health care funding; education funding; voters’ rights, and protection for the children of undocumented immigrants.

Other issues she mentioned were religious freedom for all, environmental issues, LGBT rights and human rights in general.

“This event was really just the beginning,” Shelton said. “Next there will be breakout groups all around the country tackling specific issues, using social media to help bring them together and work in regions, even neighborhoods.”

I can imagine Shelton will have more details to share at the next League of Women Voters meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 1 at the DeKalb Public Library.

Rauner praises ongoing budget work, accomplishments in annual speech

kcraver@shawmedia.com Gov. Bruce Rauner took a more optimistic tone in this year’s State of the State address, but said lawmakers need to work with him to resolve a budget impasse that has lasted a year and a half.

His address Wednesday before a joint session of the General Assembly – the Republican’s third since taking office – started with a hopeful tone and highlighted accomplishments in making Illinois a better place. But he said both sides have to work together to reverse Illinois’ sagging fortunes.

Rauner’s 35-minute address came as the leaders of the Illinois Senate attempted to craft a “grand compromise” budget deal that would include tax increases in exchange for some reforms.

The evolving compromise package of 13 bills did not go to a vote in the Senate on Wednesday as leaders had originally hoped.

“We have big challenges, and like many of you, I’m frustrated by the slow pace of change in Springfield.

But with great challenge comes great opportunity. By working together, we can overcome any obstacle,” Rauner said.

Rauner briefly went offscript to thank the Senate for working on a plan, although he did not indicate whether he would support it. He has maintained that he will not approve any tax increases without some of the reforms he is seeking to make the state more friendly to job creation and taxpayers.

“Please don’t give up. Please keep working,” Rauner said. “The people of Illinois need you to succeed.”

DeKalb County’s state lawmakers, all of whom are Republicans, echoed Rauner’s optimism that the state’s problems can be fixed.

State Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, said rank-and-file lawmakers getting involved in the process could be a key.

“Members want action, and now if we get the leaders allowing members to put forth ideas, I think we will see a grand compromise and a budget there this spring,” he said. “There’s no doubt it’s going to be very difficult to make some of these choices that we’ve got to make in terms of revenue, in terms of some reforms, in terms of

Pritchard said he also was glad that higher education was mentioned in the speech, although Northern Illinois University was not named. NIU, the No. 1 employer in DeKalb County, has seen its general state aid decline from $91.1 million in 2014-15 to $26 million for 2015-16, and $48.3 million for this school year.

“I was encouraged to hear him speak about the importance of research universities and the innovation that’s going to create new jobs,” Pritchard said. “He mentioned a number of them. I was disappointed he didn’t mention Northern because Northern is doing some great things.

“We’ve got great students, and I think great ideas that we can certainly turn into new businesses and new products.”

Rauner spent much of his speech listing accomplishments, such as ethics reform and increased government transparency, approval of “innovative” new contracts with 20 state government employee unions, criminal

justice reform and increased education funding. However, Rauner said the state “is failing to be compassionate, because we are failing to be competitive,” citing the budget impasse’s devastating effect on social services, and the state’s ongoing loss of people and jobs to other states – Illinois for the past two years has led the nation in outmigration, according to U.S. Census estimates.

State Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, said economic reforms such as those proposed by Rauner would be key to a turnaround in the state’s fortunes.

He listed property tax relief, education funding, workers’ compensation reform and programs that prepare young people for careers as particularly important for Illinois.

“Now is the time to renew our dedication to fiscal responsibility and long-overdue changes to the way things are done in Springfield,” Bivins said in a written statement.

“The governor gave a pretty realistic assessment of our state, talking about our recent accomplishments, but also

pointing out the many challenges we still face. But, like the governor, we must be optimistic that by putting aside partisan rhetoric and working together, we can accomplish what needs to be done.”

The lack of a budget is one of many problems Illinois faces. Its credit rating is the lowest of all 50 states, and is expected to be lowered again if no budget deal materializes. State government has an $11 billion backlog of unpaid bills, and an unfunded pension liability of at least $130 billion – 20 percent of general-fund spending now goes to pay state retirees.

Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, said she was interested in Rauner wanting increased commitment to education funding, on top of the $700 million extra in the past several years for K-12 schools and $100 million more for early childhood education. She is a member of the Illinois School Funding Reform Commission that is expected to release its

Tails Humane Society temporarily closed

DeKALB – Tails Humane Society is temporarily closed for renovations to the 12-year-old building, but the shelter is expected to be open for adoptions again this weekend.

Executive Director Michelle Groeper said the structure of the building is in good condition, but some interior improvements were needed.

The entire inside of the shelter is being painted, and floors are being redone in the cat rooms, visiting rooms and the conference room.

Tails was established in 1999 by a group of local animal advocates and operated out of a farmhouse until opening its facility at 2250 Barber Greene Road in 2005, according to its website.

Groeper said some cats and dogs are being housed and adopted through the Petco and PetSmart in DeKalb and Paw Lickin’ Good in Sycamore.

She said the dog area of Tails was renovated last fall, so some dogs are able to stay there during the closure.

Some cats and small animals such as rabbits and gerbils have been placed in foster homes, and other cats are staying in the back area of Tails that is not yet being renovated, Groeper said.

She said the administrative offices, storage space and cat quarantine area in the back of the shelter will be renovated with new floors in a couple weeks. She said Tails received a $110,000 bequest last year from the Micheline Levin-Bardin estate; the facility has used about $87,000 of those funds for renovations and other items to help animals, employees and volunteers.

“It took us quite some time to find the best vendors to replace the floors with the type of material needed to withstand the constant cleaning we do each day and also inhibit germs from spreading,” Groeper said.

She said the executor of the estate, Pam Tyska, lives in DeKalb and was tasked with finding an animal shelter

that would benefit from the donation.

“We have been using it to improve the lives of the animals, and the renovation is a big part of that,” Groeper said.

The funds also have been used to buy a used Honda Element for taking animals to adoption events or veterinary visits, Wi-Fi to improve the efficiency of adoptions, a new dog scale and food storage shelves.

“We still have money left over, and we are looking to use the rest for [improvements to] the outdoor dog exercise areas,” Groeper said.

She said the shelter should reopen for adoptions this weekend. Although painting still will be going on, adopters will be able to walk through other areas of the shelter.

Adoption hours are from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and noon to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

OBITUARIES DEBORAH KAYE RACHAS Born: July 23, 1955 Died: January 23, 2017

Deborah Kaye (Miller) Rachas, age 61 of Shabbona passed away Monday, January 23, 2017, at her home surrounded by her family.

Deb was born July 23, 1955, the daughter of Warren and Dolores (Peterson) Miller.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Gary Rachas; her son, Keith Rachas of Colorado; and her daughter, Shanna Thorpe of Byron; her mother, Dolores Miller of Shabbona; her 2 older brothers, Doug Miller of Denver, Colorado and David (Brenda) Miller of Geneva, IL; and 5 grandchildren, Kara and Chase Thorpe, Kyla Rachas, Zach and Johnathan.

She was preceded in death by her father, Warren Miller; and a son, Ryan Rachas.

Memorial services will be held at 11 o’clock Saturday morning, January 28, 2017, at the Shabbona United Church of Christ with Reverend James Allen officiating. Friends may call from 9 o’clock Saturday morning until the time of services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established.

DeKALB – Members of Northern Illinois University’s Faculty Senate voiced concerns about NIU President Doug Baker’s leadership after vague responses to complaints over employment decisions and other rulings during their Wednesday meeting.

Senate and University Council steering committees sought clearer responses from the president’s “Baker Report” from Dec. 22, where Baker took responsibility for “limited compliance violations” in areas including employment, consulting and capital projects in his first two years. The committee members posed nine questions to Baker, which he answered.

Baker said in his responses to the committees’ questions that the report was not meant to be vague, but it wasn’t always possible to be detailed when responding to formally registered complaints.

The paper has appealed the denial to the Illinois Attorney General’s Public Access Counselor’s office.

Virginia Naples, professor of biological sciences, said in her 33 years with NIU, she never has experienced anything that has astonished her more than the situation with Baker.

“Nothing has disappointed me as greatly as this, especially in a climate where the budget is already severely impacted,” Naples said. “I would urge everyone to share this information, to think about, process it and talk with your colleagues.”

Trial date for woman accused of attempted murder set for May

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The trial date for a 44-year-old Sycamore woman accused of trying to kill her estranged husband’s girlfriend in 2014 is scheduled for May. Nicholle Martinez, 44, of Sycamore, faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery. The most serious charge, attempted Nicholle first-degree murder, Martinez typically is punishable by six to 30 years in prison.

A jury trial has been set for May 9.

Martinez is accused of waiting in the parking lot outside the woman’s apartment in the 1300 block of Sycamore Road for her to return home and then stabbing the woman in the

neck repeatedly.

She later told police she had planned to knock the woman unconscious with a large rock and then sever an artery in her neck to kill her “humanely,” according to a police synopsis contained in court records. She also told police she planned to dispose of the body and hide evidence, records show.

Martinez’s attorney, Loren Blumenfeld, declined to comment on the case Wednesday.

If the case goes to trial, Blumenfeld is expected to call several local doctors to testify, according to court documents.

The doctors include an endocrinologist, a family practitioner and an obstetrician/gynecologist.

Blumenfeld has tried several times to get the judge to toss out statements his client made to police after the alleged stabbing at Parkside Drive Apartments, 1329 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

Martinez was released from jail in May 2015 after her husband posted $50,000 bail.

She is a graduate of Northern Illinois University.

A final hearing before the jury trial begins is set for May 4.

Illinois Senate skips planned budget vote

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois senators, still grappling with the sticker shock of a tax increase and other far-reaching restructuring to end the nation’s longest state budget deadlock, skipped a much-anticipated vote on the massive package and adjourned early Wednesday evening.

Senate President John Cullerton, a Chicago Democrat, and Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno of Lemont, had set up Wednesday as decision day on their bipartisan plan to end the longest budget drought of any state since World War II. That plan includes new taxes to drive down a multibillion-dollar deficit while attempting to address Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s demands for changes to ease the cost of business and crimp the influence of unions and politicians.

The Senate vote was to cap a big day at the Capitol. The Republican governor lauded the Senate’s cooperation earlier Wednesday during his annual State of the State address to a joint session of the General Assembly.

“Please don’t give up. Please keep working. The people of Illinois need you to succeed,” Rauner said.

Emanuel OK with help, warns against deploying troops

CHICAGO – A day after President Donald Trump declared he was ready to “send in the Feds” if Chicago can’t reduce its homicides, Mayor Rahm Emanuel warned against deploying the National Guard, saying it would hurt efforts to restore trust in the police.

Trump offered no details on what kind of federal intervention he was suggesting or if it could involve troops, but the mayor cautioned that using the military could make matters worse.

He said House Democrats would push an economic plan that cuts corporate income taxes while insuring all businesses pay some taxes, raising the minimum wage and ensuring other protections for middle-class families, and reviving House Speaker Michael Madigan’s idea of a surcharge tax on incomes more than $1 million.

Granite City Police Chief Rich Miller said Officer Eugene J. Wilkinson II was charged with felony official misconduct and is accused of “disseminating information to an individual not legally authorized to have access to such data.”

Granite City police and the FBI partnered on the investigation. An indictment in the case is sealed and officials didn’t say what type of information was leaked.

Trump moves to ‘build that wall’ with Mexico

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump moved aggressively to tighten the nation’s immigration controls Wednesday, signing executive actions to jumpstart construction of his promised U.S.-Mexico border wall and cut federal grants for immigrant-protecting “sanctuary cities.” As early as Thursday, he is expected to pause the flow of all refugees to the U.S. and indefinitely bar those fleeing war-torn Syria.

“Beginning today the United States of America gets back control of its borders,” Trump declared during a visit to the Department of Homeland Security. “We are going to save lives on both sides of the border.”

The actions, less than a week into Trump’s presidency, fulfilled pledges that animated his candidacy and represented a dramatic redirection of U.S. immigration policy. They were cheered by Republicans allies in Congress, condemned by immigration advocates and the trigger for immediate new tension with the Mexican government.

“I regret and reject the decision of the U.S. to build the wall,” Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said Wednesday in a nationally televised address.

Trump is expected to wield his executive power again later this week with the directive to dam the refugee flow into the U.S. for at least four months, in addition to the open-ended pause on Syrian arrivals.

The president’s upcoming order is also expected to suspend issuing visas for people from several predominantly Muslim countries – Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen – for at least 30 days, according to a draft executive order obtained by The Associated Press.

How Trump plans to pay for the wall project is murky.

While he has repeatedly promised that Mexico will foot the bill, U.S. taxpayers are expected to cover the initial costs and the new administration has said nothing about how it might compel Mexico to reimburse the money.

In an interview with ABC News earlier Wednesday, Trump said, “There will be a payment; it will be in a form, perhaps a complicated form.”

Nieto, who has insisted his country will not pay for a wall, has been expected to meet with Trump at the White House next week, although a senior official said Trump’s announcement had led him to reconsider the visit.

Congressional aides say there is about $100 million of unspent appropriations in the Department of Homeland Security account for border security, fencing and infrastructure.

That would allow planning efforts to get started, but far more money would have to be appropriated for construction to begin.

Pioneering actress Mary Tyler Moore dies at 80

NEW YORK – Mary Tyler Moore, the star of TV’s beloved “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” whose comic realism helped revolutionize the depiction of women on the small screen, died Wednesday. She was 80.

Moore gained fame in the 1960s as the frazzled wife, Laura Petrie, on “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” In the 1970s, she created one of TV’s first career-woman sitcom heroines in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”

“She was an impressive person and a talented person and a beautiful person.

A force of nature,” producer, creator and director Carl Reiner, who created the “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” told The Associated Press. “She’ll last forever, as long as there’s television. Year after year, we’ll see her face in front of us.”

Moore won seven Emmy awards over the years and was nominated for an Oscar for her 1980 portrayal of an affluent mother whose son is accidentally killed in “Ordinary People.”

Tributes came pouring in. “Mary’s energy, spirit and talent created a new bright spot in the television landscape and she will be very much missed,” Robert Redford, director of “Ordinary People,” said in a statement. Ellen DeGeneres took to Twitter to say: “Mary Tyler Moore changed the world for all women.”

Moore’s first major TV role was on the classic sitcom “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” in which she played the young homemaker wife of Van Dyke’s character, comedy writer Rob Petrie, from 1961 to 1966.

With her unerring gift for comedy, Moore seemed perfectly fashioned to the smarter wit of the new, post-Eisenhower age. As Laura, she traded in the housedress of countless sitcom wives for capri pants that were as fashionable as they were suited to a modern American woman.

Laura was a dream wife and mother, but not perfect. Viewers identified with her flustered moments and her protracted, plaintive cry to her husband: “Ohhhh, Robbbb!”

Moore’s chemistry with Van Dyke was unmistakable. Decades later, he spoke warmly of the chaste but palpable off-screen crush they shared during the show’s run.

They also appeared together in several TV specials over the years and in 2003, co-starred in a PBS production of the play “The Gin Game.”

But it was as Mary Richards, the plucky Minneapolis TV news producer on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” (197077), that Moore truly made her mark.

ter brought to TV audiences an independent, 1970s career woman. Other than Marlo Thomas’ 1960s sitcom character “That Girl,” who at least had a steady boyfriend, there were few precedents.

Thomas on Wednesday called Moore a gifted actress and a wonderful comedian. “I’m proud that we were in that groundbreaking sorority that brought single independent women to television,” Thomas said in a statement.

Mary Richards was comfortable being single in her 30s, and while she dated, she wasn’t desperate to get married.

She sparred affectionately with her gruff boss, Lou Grant, played by Ed Asner, and addressed him always as “Mr. Grant.” And millions agreed with the show’s theme song that she could “turn the world on with her smile.”

Asner paid tribute to his co-star, saying on Twitter: “A great lady I loved and owe so much has left us. I will miss her.

I will never be able to repay her for the blessings that she gave me.”

The show was filled with laughs. But no episode was more memorable than the bittersweet finale, when new management fired the entire WJM News staff – everyone but the preening, clueless anchorman, Ted Baxter. Thus did the series dare to question whether Mary Richards actually did “make it after all.”

The series ran seven seasons and won 29 Emmys, a record that stood for a quarter century until “Frasier” broke it in 2002.

“Everything I did was by the seat of the pants. I reacted to every written situation the way I would have in real life,” Moore told The Associated Press in 1995. “My life is inextricably intertwined with Mary Richards’, and probably always will be.”

Moore won her seventh Emmy in 1993, for supporting actress in a miniseries or special, for a Lifetime network movie, “Stolen Babies.” She had won two for “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and the other four for “Mary Tyler Moore.” In 2012, Moore received the Screen Actors Guild’s lifetime achievement award.

On the big screen, Moore’s appearances were less frequent. She was a 1920s flapper in the hit 1967 musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and a nun who falls for Elvis Presley in “Change of Habit” in 1969.

She turned to serious drama in 1980’s “Ordinary People,” playing an affluent, bitter mother who loses a son in an accident. The film won the Oscar for best picture and best director for Robert Redford, and it earned Moore an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe.

In real life, Moore also endured personal tragedy. The same year “Ordinary People” came out, her only child, Richard, who’d had trouble in school and with drugs, accidentally shot himself at age 24. Her younger sister, Elizabeth, died at 21 from a combination of a painkillers and alcohol.

Coin shows new face of Lady Liberty Flip an American coin, and there’s a zero percent chance you’ll find a black woman on either side. In April, that will change: To celebrate its 225th anniversary, the U.S. Mint plans to release a commemorative $100 gold coin featuring an African American Lady Liberty.

The 24-karat coin, whose release the Mint announced Jan. 19, will cost far more than its face value – around $1,500, depending on the price of gold – and will be a collector’s item, not everyday currency.

The Mint also will make less-expensive silver reproductions. The coin is the first in a series to reflect what the Mint calls “the cultural and ethnic diversity of the United States.” The exact shape future Ladies Liberty will take, according to the Mint, will be up to the artists who design them.

This commemorative coin will arrive just less than a year after the announcement Harriet Tubman is bumping Andrew Jackson to the back of the $20 bill. In some ways, the news about Lady Liberty seems small in comparison.

Most Americans won’t use or even see the coin; only numismatic enthusiasts will find a place for it in their collections (although former president Barack Obama expressed interest in purchasing one). Besides, Tubman deserves to be recognized for the remarkable role she played in history, while Lady Liberty is just an allegory.

Yet allegory also is what makes Lady Liberty the perfect candidate for a recasting of American ideals: Because she has no face, the country gets to decide what face to give her. The multicultural Ladies at their best will chronicle an evolution in what the nation thinks liberty means and always should have meant: freedom not just for the huddled European masses whom the Statue of Liberty began welcoming after her own arrival to New York in 1885, but the men and women who arrived in chains decades before, and those who come to America from around the world today believing in her promise.

A black Lady Liberty doesn’t make up for a woeful past, and her coin should not turn into a chance for the country – or the U.S. Mint – to pat itself on the back. Instead, it should invite a conversation on how our nation still falls short. Giving liberty the faces of more Americans has symbolic value, but only if accompanied by policies that enlarge freedom for all Americans.

Keep gun silencers from shooters Just as Chicago is moving ahead with new technology that could help reduce gunfire deaths, Congress and the Illinois Senate are considering misguided bills that could shoot Chicago’s effort to pieces by making gun silencers easily available.

Chicago’s new technology, called ShotSpotter, alerts police as soon as bullets start flying, instead of making them wait for a phone call. Officers can respond more quickly – sometimes within seconds.

By arriving faster, detectives are more likely to find witnesses, and crime scene personnel have a better chance of scooping up evidence, such as shell casings. Victims can get medical care faster. Recently, Chicago’s Public Building Commission voted to spend $938,500 to expand ShotSpotter in the Englewood and Harrison police districts,

which are home to most of the city’s gun violence.

But ShotSpotter is ineffective if shooters use gun silencers, devices that muffle the sound of gunfire when they are attached to a gun’s barrel.

Silencers also further imperil innocent people at a shooting scene because they can’t hear the crack of the gun that tells them to get out of the way. The Violence Policy Center in Washington said silencers “could help enable mass shooters and other murderers to kill a greater number of victims more efficiently.”

A proliferation of silencers would mean more dead innocent people. But that hasn’t stopped two U.S. House Republicans from introducing a bill this month to eliminate federal restrictions on silencers.

Nor has it prevented the introduction of a bill in the Illinois

Senate that would lift the state’s ban on silencers.

Defenders of easily obtainable silencers, including President Donald Trump Jr., said the devices protect the hearing of hunters, who apparently can’t be bothered to wear hearing protection or obtain federal silencer permits, which involve submitting fingerprints and a photo, paying a $200 tax, a background check and a wait of several months. But the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence said there is no public health evidence that gunfire is causing hearing loss.

Because Congress is friendly to the gun lobby, the federal restrictions might be eased. It is all the more important, then, to maintain Illinois’ own ban on silencers.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

A GOP tax plan aimed at the middle class Mike Lee, a Republican senator from Utah, has already established that he is willing to break from the pack on tax policy. Most Republican reform plans over the past decade have viewed their primary mission as minimizing the top tax rate on high earners. Lee has instead promoted changes that put a reduction in tax burdens on middle-class parents at its center.

Now he is proposing another change in GOP tax policy. Instead of seeking to cut taxes on capital gains and dividends, as Republicans have been trying to do for decades, he would raise them. But at the same time, he would be bolder than his colleagues about corporate taxes. Where most Republicans want to cut corporate rates – President Donald Trump ran on cutting them to 15 percent – Lee wants to abolish the tax altogether.

His plan is based on work done by Eric Toder and Alan Viard, economists who work respectively for the Urban Institute and the American Enterprise Institute (where I am also a fellow). Their proposal is aimed at fixing some wellknown problems of the corporate tax.

They made this change in part to keep their proposal from causing too large a loss in federal revenue, but also for other reasons: It made it possible to tax foreign investors, for example.

That adjustment necessitated another. Keeping the corporate tax while raising capital taxes on individuals re-created the problem of double taxation, which they would remedy by giving shareholders a tax credit. Lee, on the other hand, would just scrap the corporate tax, telling me he prefers “the simplicity of just zeroing it out.”

But he also said that he is flexible on the details. Going for simplicity makes sense when introducing an unfamiliar idea to the political debate.

“What I am trying to do is start a conversation,” he said.

It’s a potentially productive conversation. It’s just bound to get more complicated as it progresses.

Offering bad political advice to a future president On a fairly regular basis back in the day, state Sen. Barack Obama would walk up to the Senate press box and bum cigarettes off me. That was when people could smoke in the Senate chambers and back when both of us smoked. Now, we both chew nicotine gum, and smoking on the Senate floor is strictly forbidden.

Obama was mainly an OPC smoker, meaning “other peoples’ cigarettes.” I’d usually give him a little grief about how maybe he should buy his own pack once in a while, but I never denied his request unless I was almost out. He’d always take the cigarette to a room in the back of the chamber, never seeming to smoke at his desk as others did.

One day, as I was wandering through the Statehouse near his office, Obama hollered out my name and asked me to come in and join him. I presumed he wanted to bum yet another cigarette, and I was right. I tossed my pack on his desk, and he took one out, lit it, and we made a little small talk.

Honestly, I didn’t much care for the guy in those days. He hadn’t yet done a lot of real work, or built strong relationships with fellow legislators by then,

VIEWS Rich Miller particularly with members of the Senate Black Caucus. By the time of our chat, he’d gotten way ahead of himself by challenging U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush in the 2000 Democratic primary and losing badly.

I was interviewed by the Chicago Reader newspaper during that campaign. I told the reporter Obama was “a very intelligent man” who has “some really good ideas” and would “probably make a pretty good congressman.”

But I also pointed out he hadn’t had a lot of success in Springfield and speculated it could be “because he places himself above everybody. He likes people to know he went to Harvard.”

I got a phone call from Obama after that story was published. He was stung by my comments. I tried to point out the positive things I said, but that didn’t work. At the end of our conversation, we agreed to start talking more often,

which may have been why he called me into his office that day. We had finished our cigarettes, and I remember getting up to leave. It’s not as if he knew any hot inside information I could use in my Capitol Fax publication, so I had work to do and needed to move on.

But Obama asked me to stay a while longer, so I sat down and we each lit another smoke. Obama then stunned me with a question I never in a million years would’ve anticipated: What would I think of him running for U.S. Senate in 2004?

His question seemed so ... presumptuous. Rush had just cleaned his clock by a 30-point margin, I reminded Obama. If he ran for statewide office and lost, he’d be finished, washed up, out of the game for good.

“There is still some honor to serving in the Illinois Senate,” I gently scolded him.

But Obama said he was getting heat from the homefront. His Springfield duties were preventing him from making a decent living as an attorney, so he either had to move up to a much higher office or get out of politics and go make some

real money.

I couldn’t argue with that logic, but I suggested maybe he stop using “Barack” and call himself “Barry” or something.

He said that’s what his friends called him when he was growing up, but said he wanted to stick to his given name. I made some sort of joke about Irishing up his last name with an apostrophe after the “O” and using green yard signs. Had I known at the time his middle name was “Hussein,” I’m sure I would’ve made some sort of inappropriate joke.

I tell this story whenever somebody asks me for advice about whether to run for higher office in order to explain why I no longer provide that sort of counsel. I mean, I actually told a future president of the United States not to be so darned ambitious. It was not my proudest moment.

Nowadays, I just say, “What do you really want to do?” And if they can answer that question, I urge them to put their entire heart and soul into the effort.

It works out much better that way – for them and for me.

Ryan Glasgow clearly has the bloodlines, and now he is trying to do what his brother, Graham, did last year and improve his draft stock. Ryan’s older brother got a late invite to the Senior Bowl in 2016 after a strong performance at the Shrine Game and contin-

ued to build on that momentum on his way to being a third-round pick and 11-game starter for the Detroit Lions.

“I watched last year’s draft stock go up [for Graham],” Ryan Glasgow said after Tuesday’s practice. “… When I received my Senior Bowl invite I was ecstatic. I want to play like I have something to prove, and I want to show teams what I can do out here.”

In his career for the Wolverines, Glasgow played in 45 games with 33 starts. As a senior, he had four sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss. He checked in at 6-2 and 299 pounds with impressive

Glasgow considers himself strong against the run and “an underrated pass rusher,” but he’s using the week to hone those skills getting after the quarterback.

“I was trying to work on my pass rush. I think I did a good job in 1-on1’s, but I need to translate that over to team,” he said. “Converting from my run reads to pass quicker is something I definitely need to work on. Playing a little further away from the ball –

Instead, the Huskies ran the Golden Flashes off the floor in the third quarter.

NIU tied a season high in points in a quarter and made 10 consecutive shots – many of which were layups – to distance itself Wednesday in a 93-72 win over Kent State at the NIU Convocation Center.

“I thought in the third quarter we got back to pushing the pace and getting opportunities in transition, and that’s obviously when we’re at our best and when we make a push and make a run,” NIU coach Lisa Carlsen said.

After taking a 36-30 lead into halftime, the Huskies (14-5, 7-1 MAC West) outscored the Golden Flashes, 37-21, in the third quarter to open up a 20-point lead. They finished the quarter 14 for 21 from the floor – including the stretch making 10 straight – and it’s the sixth time this season they’ve scored 30 points or more in a quarter.

NIU scored 37 points in the second quarter of its 108-66 win over Illinois State on Nov. 26.

The last time the Huskies met the Golden Flashes, NIU outscored them, 30-19, in the fourth quarter for a wild 98-97 win Jan. 11 at Kent State.

“When we played them there, they were fine with that pace,” Carlsen said.

“I thought tonight, they really struggled getting back in transition in that third quarter. Whether that was fatigue, whether it was us doing a good job of running – it’s probably a combination of a lot of things. growing up, and then being able to be coached by their staff is pretty unreal.”

The Glasgow brothers – the youngest, Jordan, is a safety at Michigan – grew up going to Northern Illinois games, as their father worked as a team physician. The experience watching the Huskies, Glasgow said, “inspired the [desire] to play in college.”

From wrestling with his brother growing up in the house to in the trenches on the football field, Glasgow now hopes to take that aggression and use it for good during Senior Bowl week on his route toward the NFL. “Graham and I talk a lot. We’re very close,” he said. “Having him there to prepare me … helped me get mentally in the right spot for the event.”

Davis makes starts for Southwestern Illinois

sports@daily-chronicle.com Freshman center Luke Davis wears “00” on his jersey, but he hasn’t put up many zeros for the Southwestern Illinois men’s basketball team. The DeKalb graduate has averaged 8.9 points a game and 6.7 rebounds a game.

He’s cracked the starting lineup three times for the Blue Storm.

In two games last weekend, Metro State (12-7) went 1-1 and got contributions from DeKalb graduate Andre Harris. In an 69-67 loss to Colorado Mesa, Harris shot 2 of 6 from the field and had 6 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks.

In a 75-60 win Saturday against Western State Colorado, Harris, who also played basketball for two seasons at Kishwaukee College, had a huge game with 22 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks.

All were season highs for the senior forward, and Harris averages 8.8 points and 6.6 rebounds a game. He’s shooting 56 percent from the field and

In a 60-56 win Saturday at Prairie State, VanWhye shot 9 for 16 from the field for 18 points.

Rounding out the trio of women’s basketball players at Waubonsee from Next Level’s coverage area is Sycamore grad Lauren Goff. The freshman forward has scored 11.8 points a game, shot 36 percent from the field and 33 percent from 3-point range.

She’s averaged 4.6 assists a game and 4.0 rebounds a game and stuffed the stat sheet against Elgin with 10 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal.

DeKalb graduate Jasmine Malloy has started two of 15 games for Lincoln College. The sophomore forward has averaged 1.8 points a game in 22 minutes a game. She’s shot 36 percent from the field and has averaged 2.9 rebounds a game.

Alyassa Burgess has averaged 1.1 points and 2.0 rebounds a game for Ripon College. The DeKalb graduate

plays just more than eight minutes a game for the Red Hawks (8-5). She had two rebounds in four minutes in a 58-55 loss to Cornell College on Jan 14.

Kelly Wallner had 3 points and 2 rebounds for North Central in a 103-81 loss Saturday at Elmhurst. The junior center from Kaneland played nine minutes in the loss. She’s an exercise science major and has played in 15 games where she’s averaged 6.2 minutes a game.

Redshirt sophomore Kyle Akins is 11-2 and 5-0 in dual meets for the Buffalo wrestling team. The Sycamore graduate has two pins and two tech falls on the season. Buffalo (7-4, 2-2 Mid-American) is 3-1 in its past four dual meets.

A four-time state placer at Sycamore, Akins started the Bulls’ 22-14 win Friday against Old Dominion with an 18-2 tech fall win. It was the Bulls first road MAC dual meet win since 2012.

Akins and the Bulls will be in DeKalb when they face the Huskies at 1 p.m. Feb. 12.

“Cass did an absolutely phenomenal job one-on-one, and I think the rest of the team did a nice job of being present in the gaps so if Lurken got the ball she didn’t have anywhere to go with it. ... She was very frustrated. If you were on the court or near the court, you could tell.”

Lurken entered the game as the conference’s leading scorer (22.7 points a game) in overall games played and second-leading scorer (24.7 per game) during MAC play.

For the Huskies, the victory is the latest in the impressive stretch in which they’ve won eight of their past nine games – the only loss coming in an uncharacteristically poor offensive showing in an 84-55 loss to Akron.

Four of those wins have been by double digits, and the victory over the Golden Flashes was the most lopsided against a MAC team so far this season.

“In the second half, we started to play our own game and it showed we were in a lot better shape than Kent State was, and we were getting stops and defensive rebounds

and were running,” Woods said.

By the numbers: The teams were called for a combined 56 fouls, which is the second-most in an NIU game since 60 against Milwaukee – a game that went into double-overtime. On Wednesday, the Huskies went 27 for 37 from the free-throw line and Kent State was 20 for 31.

Beyond the stats: The win keeps the Huskies in a share of the top spot in the MAC. NIU and Ball State, which won Wednesday at Buffalo, are both 7-1 in conference.

The two teams square off Saturday. Central Michigan, which is 6-1, is off until Saturday.

They said it: “It’s been a while since we’ve played that style of basketball,” Woods said. “Against Miami (Ohio) (an 89-76 win for the Huskies), we didn’t play the way we wanted to. Akron, obviously we didn’t. We kind of got back, today, to how we wanted to play. That’s the style we want to play – we want to run, we want to shoot layups and shoot 3s and we did that in the third quarter.”

Up next: The Huskies play at Ball State at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Kent State hosts Bowling Green on Saturday.

Raiders are going nowhere fast THE WAY WE HEAR IT

While we have written on this topic before in The Way We Hear It, the confirmation by the league office that the Oakland Raiders requested formal permission to relocate to Las Vegas last week has once again set off a whirlwind of reporting and conversation that the move is a done deal.

Again, we are here to report that not only is the Raiders move to Vegas not a done deal, according to multiple sources around the league, the odds may actually be less than 50-50 that the move is approved, and even if it is approved there are still so many details unsettled that Mark Davis’ deal with Vegas could easily fall apart.

As one high-level team executive told us, “Mark Davis is a nice enough guy but he is not anywhere near in his father’s league, and he is in way over his head in his dealings with the other owners and the people in Las Vegas.”

There are two very significant hurdles that remain in Davis’ finding 23 owners willing to join him in voting to approve the move.

The National Football League cannot be any clearer in its objections to legalized betting on games, and even if that position is a public relations sham since anyone and everyone knows how critical it is to the league’s transcendent popularity, the NFL has spent a fortune in time and money staking out that claim.

For a league that has gone out of its way to get everything it’s touched over the past few seasons wrong in the poll of public opinion, to suddenly say its fine with putting a franchise in Las Vegas will be just one more public relations fiasco, especially with the cost being it will mark the owners thumbing their noses at the third loyal fan base – St. Louis and San Diego – in the past 12 months.

And that’s not the highest hurdle. Many assume that, since Jerry Jones has voiced his support for the move and because he was the power broker that swung the deal for the Rams and Chargers to land in LA, Davis will get his votes.

Additionally, what is not widely known is that Jones was Al Davis’ closest confidant among his fellow owners during his later years running the Raiders before his death.

Visiting with Davis in the week leading up to the Giants vs. Patriots Super Bowl in Phoenix in February 2008, Davis told us, “What I admire so much about Jerry is the way he’s been able to marry his business acumen and concerns with

his football business and accomplish the best for both the game and his team.”

How close Jones has stayed with the younger Davis in the five-plus years since he inherited the team we do not know, but we have been told recently by several sources close to Jones that while he likes the idea of a team in Vegas, he won’t put his weight behind a potentially bad or dangerous business deal if all the i’s aren’t dotted and the t’s aren’t crossed.”

And therein lies Davis’ biggest problem.

Yes, he, the city of Las Vegas and casino magnate Sheldon Adelson have agreed to the framework of a deal that will allow them to build a $1.7 billion to $1.9 billion, 65,000-seat, domed stadium in Las Vegas, and the city has approved $750 million in public money.

It would be the largest publicly funded commitment to an NFL stadium in history and the owners all love that.

Additionally, Adelson has committed $650 million of his own money to the project and there are multiple reports that Davis has a deal with Goldman Sachs to finance the remaining capital required.

Where things get extremely murky is Davis does not have a deal with Adelson for what the multi-billionaire expects in return for his $650 million. There are multiple reports Adelson wants a piece of the team – something we’re told Davis doesn’t have to give up and would be loathe to if he did – and significant operating control of the venue.

Finally, there is the biggest issue. The Rams paid fellow owners $550 million for the right to move from St. Louis to Los Angeles. While relocation fees have not been announced yet for the Chargers and Raiders, they aren’t going to be less. Davis just doesn’t have anywhere near that kind of money as far as anyone can tell, and league rules prohibit him from borrowing against the equity in his team.

Davis’ fellow owners will certainly be taking up his request to relocate at the winter meetings in Arizona at the end of March, but they are not obligated to vote on the move at that time and it’s a safe bet they won’t be voting if Davis hasn’t locked down the multiple loose ends in this deal.

Finally, The Way We Hear It, there are at least five owners who may or may not be willing to vote for Davis but are loathe to have Adelson as a partner should he sell him equity in the Raiders.

We aren’t saying the Raiders aren’t going to Las Vegas. Nothing Roger Goodell and his gaggle of owners do surprises us any more.

We are saying that multiple sources aligned with almost a dozen different teams are telling us this game is still in the first quarter.

Is Jim Irsay dumb like a fox

Media and fans alike wondered for weeks what was going on in Indianapolis while the other six teams in the NFL hustled to fill vacant head coach and general manager jobs. The assumption was Ryan Grigson and Chuck Pagano must be safe for another year, particularly in light of the four-year contract extensions each received prior to this season.

So there was more than a bit of surprise when Irsay announced Grigson would be fired while Pagano would get another year, after all the vacancies but the 49ers, who were the only other team looking for a G.M., had been filled.

Perhaps Irsay just couldn’t make up his mind, or perhaps as we’re hearing Irsay wanted to be certain of his options before making a move.

A source close to the situation in Indianapolis tells us that as the other clubs’ searches went on and were eventually completed, Irsay was

stunned that almost all of the top general manager and head coaching prospects were still available.

Knowing that he had one asset none of the other clubs could come close to matching, Andrew Luck, Irsay decided championship weekend was the time to pounce.

New England’s Nick Caserio, Kansas City’s Chris Ballard and Green Bay’s Eliot Wolf and Brian Gutekunst are at the top of almost every G.M. search list – Caserio is the hottest name in the league – and all declined to be considered for the 49ers job, the only other current general manager opening.

Ironically, it’s Irsay who now has the field all to himself as he goes prospecting.

Additionally, while it seems highly likely if not certain Kyle Shanahan will take the 49ers job, he, Josh McDaniels, Matt Patricia, Mike Smith and Todd Haley were all as highly and in most cases more highly rated than the assistants who’ve been awarded head coaching jobs so far.

We’re told that should Irsay manage to land Caserio or Ballard in the near future, and one of them can convince one of the remaining top head coaching prospects that he and Luck offer a job too good to pass up in spite of Irsay’s comments to date, Pagano may not be out of the woods yet either, and Irsay may end up making some of his fellow owners look like amateurs.

“C’mon, I mean if [the opposition] wants to put a guy on the ball and try and wear me out, I feel like I do a lot of running anyways,’’ Butler said. “I condition myself well enough to where I can ‘be tired,’ but still do what I’m supposed to do.’’

Fans to soak in new direction at SoxFest

The White Sox have almost always had just enough pieces on their roster to pitch themselves as contenders when SoxFest came rolling around in January.

In reality, since their last playoff team in 2008, with few exceptions they’ve shaped up as – at best – .500-looking teams accompanied by the promise of being one or two midseason additions away from making the postseason. That was usually enough to suck fans in this time of year.

But after consistently being “mired in mediocrity” as general manager Rick Hahn famously put it last summer (the fact is four straight losing seasons is worse than mediocre), the Sox have given up on trying to cobble together a contending team. The December trades of Chris Sale, one of baseball’s elite pitchers, and Adam Eaton, the Sox’s best overall position player in 2016, for

packages of prospects has signaled the start of a plan of which most hard-core fans – those who can name all 25 players on the roster, who have a decent knowledge of the farm system, who follow the team daily – appear to approve.

Fan bases have seen other teams, the Cubs as the nearby obvious albeit dissimilar example, go young and make it work over time. And it will be worth noting to see how the Sox’s faithful Jose responds at SoxFest this Quintana weekend.

Their hopes of winning will be lower than ever, but they might be less grumpy than usual.

Many will want to know, however, why the “overhaul” hit the brakes after Sale and Eaton were dealt for seven prospects, six of whom are now in the organization’s top 10 (including the the top four) according to MLB.com. Hahn does have more pieces at his disposal

to move including probable Opening Day left-hander Jose Quintana (if he’s still here by April 3), third baseman Todd Frazier and closer David Robertson, to name a few. But the overall market has cooled.

Hahn said in December he was under no pressure to deal and that still stands six weeks later. A sore arm to someone’s key starter or reliever or an injury to another team’s middle-of-theorder bat could be all it takes for Hahn to get what he wants.

In the meantime, Quintana, the likeable good soldier and All-Star, will find himself in the awkward position at SoxFest of being asked what it’s like to hear his name mentioned in trade rumors on an almost daily basis. Elsewhere, new prospects such as Yoan Moncada, Lucas Giolito, Zack Collins, Zach Burdi and Michael Kopech will be making the rounds and capturing the attention of fans.

Intrigue will be a welcome addition at the Chicago Hilton.

SoxFest week continues Thursday with new manager Rick Renteria, 23-year-old shortstop Tim Anderson, Moncada and Giolito visiting Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital before Burdi and Kopech, among others, making ticket sales calls from the ballpark. On Wednesday, Renteria made a relaxed and engaging appearance at Juarez Academy, three miles away from the Sox’ ballpark. Renteria, who loves to cook, whipped up a serving of queso fundido for an attentive culinary class and told students “to avoid the temptation of giving up hope.”

He was talking about their personal dreams, not the professional baseball team’s that plays nearby. But he could have been delivering a message to Sox fans everywhere.

These hopes will require a dash of patience as well, but for fans who’ve become frustrated or begun to lose interest with patchwork fixer-upper teams, seeing a clearer recipe for hoped-for success might be easier to digest.

CHICAGO – Jimmy Butler talks too much.

So while he’s more than willing and able to take over the team’s full-time point guard duties, that’s not a discussion he will have with Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg. Not yet, at least.

Now, if Hoiberg wants to sit down and discuss it … . “[Heck] yeah, I’ll do it,’’ Butler said. “That’s not saying I am [a point guard], but I think that if that’s what my team, my coach needs me to do, I definitely think I can handle it.’’

The reason Butler hasn’t forced the issue?

“I think at times I talk too much,’’ Butler said. “So sometimes I need to be quiet, let Fred do his job and I’ll do mine. Just play basketball.

But if sometime soon I think I need to finally speak up in that department and let him

Not that he’s shown it much in either start, but Hoiberg at least likes the idea of it.

mlazerus@suntimes.com In his younger and more vulnerable years, Jordin Tootoo might not be so gracious about Tanner Kero’s sudden rise up the organizational depth chart.

Or about Nick Schmaltz’s encouraging return to the lineup. Or about Marcus Kruger’s impending return from a hand injury Thursday night.

Each of those things is good for the Blackhawks. But each of those things could mean the end of Tootoo’s days as a regular in the lineup. The veteran Tootoo is focusing on the former, where the younger Tootoo might have dwelled on the latter.

“I’ve been here before; it’s old news to me,” Tootoo said. “Mentally, you’ve got to be strong. There were times when I let it affect my mind mentally, and it’s not good. It’s not a good thing to be around that as a teammate. You can feel that energy when someone’s like that.”

Andrew Desjardins is in the same situation. Desjardins and Tootoo have had a relatively steady presence in the lineup all season. Desjardins has played in 30 of 37 games since returning in November from a preseason injury. He also played 77 games last season, and played a significant role in the Hawks’ 2015 Stanley Cup run as a shutdown forward and penalty-killer.

Tootoo, meanwhile, has played in 35 of 50 games this season, and has appeared in 40 playoff games in his career.

But if all goes according to plan with Kruger and the Hawks’ young players – let alone a possible trade-deadline acquisition up front – Desjardins and Tootoo could end up on the outside looking in when the games are just starting to matter.

Neither has played an enormous role this season – they’ve combined for zero goals and zero assists, and have the lowest average ice times on the team. Desjardins averages 9:19 per game, Tootoo averages a mere 6:33.

And that’s part of the problem: The Hawks are at their best when they can lean on all 12 forwards, with the fourth line playing 10 to 12 minutes a night. Kero’s emergence, Schmaltz’s renewed confidence and Kruger’s return could give them that depth.

Desjardins has never been a big point-producer, but his pointless season has been frustrating. He had eight goals and five assists last season. He hit a post in Colorado and briefly was credited for a goal before it was changed. In fact, his line – with Dennis Rasmussen and Schmaltz – was terrific in that game. Desjardins knows he’ll need more games like that, and maybe a goal here or there, to keep his spot in the lineup.

“Obviously, it’s in the back of my head; it’s always there,” Desjardins said. “I’ve just got to do the right things and help the team win, and sometimes that’s not scoring. I would love to do it, but I’ve just got to play the right way and let it happen.”

MOBILE, Ala. — The Bears’ search for new players on defense to help improve after a franchise-worst season of creating turnovers began this week at the Senior Bowl.

Ryan Pace, John Fox, Vic Fangio and Ed Donatell will leave Mobile with plenty of knowledge of the defensive backs on the North team they are coaching.

“Just guys that show that they have the ball skills to No. 1 catch it, to find it and make a play on the ball,” Fangio said of what he’s looking Vic Fangio for from the draft prospects. “Some guys have the innate ability to do that and some guys don’t. Usually you can see it right away if they have the opportunities in practice, so I’d like to think we’ve given them enough opportunities to show that either in an individual drill or in competitive situations.”

Helping Fangio in identifying difference-making defensive backs is new Bears assistant Roy Anderson, who will work primarily with the safeties, the Bears’ most troubled position on ‘D’ last season and for most of the past decade.

“You’ve just got to stress it,” Anderson said of how to improve at taking the ball away. “The more and more you stress it in meetings and practices then I think the players click with it. That’s one thing we try to do everywhere I’ve been – stress those turnovers, stress trying to make plays on the ball down

the field.

“And then also just repetition and practice. When you get to practice, it’s, ‘Hey, we’ve got to strip the ball out. We’ve got to get picks.’ And then once you stress it over and over again, I think it really sticks with them, and then they go out there and do it.”

For a Bears team with a big need in the secondary, the top defensive backs on the roster they’re coaching in Mobile are Michigan corner Jourdan Lewis, Iowa corner Desmond King, Connecticut safety Obi Melifonwu and West Virginia corner Rasul Douglas.

Year Two for Floyd: The Bears can create more turnovers with more pass rush, and that’ll come from an improved Leonard Floyd, who showed flashes in his 12 games. Fangio wants to see Floyd in better shape to start his second season.

“Get him in better shape and keep him available so he can go through a whole offseason and a whole training camp to where he can play,” Fangio said. “That one stretch in the middle third of the season where he was practicing and playing a good bit, you saw him make good strides, and then he had the couple concussions late in the season, which slowed him down. If we can get him out there and playing and participating, he’ll be fine.”

Fangio has been coaching Floyd’s position, the outside linebackers, in Mobile after Clint Hurtt’s contract was not renewed. The veteran coordinator said he usually spends more time with the OLBs and he’s getting some help at the Senior Bowl from Sean Desai, the team’s defensive quality control coach the last two seasons.

SPORTS BRIEFS NIU’s Engelkes named MAC Wrestler of Week for first time

Northern Illinois senior Trace Engelkes was named the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.

It’s the first time in his career that Engelkes has earned the honor and the first selection for a Huskie this season.

Engelkes (12-2) won both of his matches this weekend – including a 6-2 decision over Illinois’ Zach Brunson, who was ranked No. 9 in the nation. The NCAA released the first of four coaches rankings, and Engelkes is ranked No. 25 at 174.

The Huskies will wrestle Friday at Kent State and Sunday at Central Michigan.

Brent Musburger is retiring from sportscasting at age 77

NEW YORK – Brent Musburger is calling it a career at ESPN after being the playby-play man in the booth at sporting events enjoyed by millions of Americans, most prominently when he was the lead voice for CBS Sports in the 1980s.

Musburger, 77, said he’s leaving active sportscasting to help his family get a sports handicapping business started and to use some of the millions of airline miles he’s earned for some fun travel.

His last game will be the Kentucky-Georgia men’s basketball game Jan. 31. That takes him back to Rupp Arena, where he called Villanova’s historic NCAA championship upset over

Georgetown in 1985.

Both Musburger and ESPN said comments about Oklahoma football player Joe Mixon that were criticized as insensitive during the Sugar Bowl earlier this month had nothing to do with his exit. Musburger said he hoped Mixon, who had been suspended for a year after punching a woman and breaking her jaw, would make the most of his second chance and did not initially talk about his victim.

Bolt loses 2008 Olympic relay gold in teammate’s doping case

GENEVA – Usain Bolt has lost one of his nine Olympic gold medals because of a doping case involving Jamaican teammate Nesta Carter.

The IOC said Wednesday that Carter tested positive for methylhexaneamine, a banned stimulant, in reanalysis of samples from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Olympic rules state that the entire relay team can be disqualified and stripped of medals if one runner fails a doping test.

Carter and Bolt were teammates on the winning 4x100-meter team, which set a world record of 37.10 seconds. Carter ran the opening leg, and Bolt took the baton third in a team that also included Michael Frater and Asafa Powell.

“The Jamaican team is disqualified,” the IOC said in a statement. “... the corresponding medals, medalist pins and diplomas are withdrawn and shall be returned.”

Real places that inspired scenes in Oscar-nominated films

Fans of movies nominated for Oscars this year will be pleased to know that they can visit many real places in homage to their favorite films, from a diner in Miami where part of “Moonlight” was shot to a pier in Los Angeles used in “La La Land” and a house in Pittsburgh used in “Fences.”

diner in Miami, a house in Pittsburgh and a pier in Los Angeles: All of them are real places where Oscar-nominated movies were filmed.

Part of “Moonlight” was shot in Jimmy’s Eastside Diner in Miami.

Scenic spots around Los Angeles featured in “La La Land” included the Hermosa Beach Pier.

And in Pittsburgh, “Fences” was filmed in a house that perfectly evokes playwright “August Wilson’s world,” according to his widow.

Other movies with connections to real places include “Manchester by the Sea,” filmed in coastal towns near Boston, and “Hidden Figures,” about African-American women who worked for NASA in Virginia, where several attractions may be of interest to fans.

Here are some details.

LA LA LAND

This musical love letter to Los Angeles includes shots of many recognizable destinations around the city. Among them: Griffith Observatory, the Hermosa Beach Pier and nearby Lighthouse Cafe, the Hollywood Walk of Fame mural, Angels Flight Railway, Grand Central Market and the Smoke House restaurant. There’s even a scene staged amid traffic on a freeway overpass.

This movie tells the story of African-American women who worked at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, in the early 1960s. Their work helped put John Glenn into orbit. The movie was mostly filmed in Atlanta, but Hampton offers several attractions worth visiting.

A new exhibit called “When the Computer Wore a Skirt: NASA’s Human Computers” just opened at the Hampton History Museum. SHS alum headlines ‘A Note To Remember’ DAILY CHRONICLE

The Eric Montzka Trio will headline the Sycamore Music Boosters’ ninth annual “A Note to Remember,” a night of jazz and classical music, on Feb. 11.

The fundraiser also will feature performances by Craig Mathey, the Sycamore High School Jazz Ensemble, SHS Jazz Choir and a SHS String Ensemble.

The event will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. at Blumen Gardens, 403 Edward St. in Sycamore. A limited number of tickets are available for this adult-only event for $30 per person which includes musical entertainment, hors d’oeuvres, coffee bar, silent auction and raffle. A cash bar will be available.

Sycamore High School alumni and Chicagoarea percussionist Eric Montzka has worked with a number of musicians, including John Scofield, Maynard Ferguson, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Karrin Alison, Chris Potter, Dave Douglas, Howard Levy and Von Freeman. He was a member of Patricia Barber’s quartet (1998-2010) and toured more than 25 countries in five continents and appeared on five recordings distributed by the Blue Note record label.

Montzka holds a bachelor’s degree in percussion performance from Northern Illinois University.

While enrolled at NIU he toured Switzerland for a week with the NIU, Jazz Ensemble. He also has maintained an informal private lesson studio until 2013 and taught at Northbrook High School and Chicago’s Merit School of Music. Montzka is a 2015 Sycamore Music Hall of Fame inductee. At the Note to Remember event, he will lead his trio, which features guitarist John Moulder and Larry Kohut on

Craig Mathey has been a lifelong Sycamore resident and a musician since age 10. He began his musical career by taking accordion lessons for a year, and from then on was a self-taught musician.

At age 12 he started playing with a gospel group. which honed his skills in improvising and ear training. At age 14 he taught himself to play the piano and electronic keyboards, and at age 18 he joined a pop/country/wedding band call the Dick Sargent Review, performing with them until his mid-20s.

Next, Mathey formed a duo with John Huber that performed throughout the area for more than eight years. In early 2003, he launched his soloist career, performing dinner and cocktail music. Mathey can

be found performing all styles of music at various restaurants and venues in the area.

The 2017 Sycamore High School Music Hall of Fame inductees also will be introduced at this event. Two Sycamore community members have been chosen as Advocate Award recipients and one community member will be receiving the Ovation Award; inductees will be announced soon. A separate induction ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

The romantic and erotic story of the painter Raphael’s involvement with his mysterious, unnamed Roman mistress – known to posterity as “La Fornarina,” The Baker’s Daughter – is one of the most intriguing stories to come out of the Italian Renaissance.

This is a tale that involves love, lust and art, a combination that made it irresistible to Pablo Picasso.

In 1967, at the age of 87, Picasso produced a suite of 25 etchings in which he expressed in rapturously sexual terms the love affair of Raphael and La Fornarina.

Judith Testa, a retired professor of art history in the Northern Illinois University School of Art and Design, will present a talk on this topic titled “X-Rated Raphael: Picasso Explores

a Renaissance Love Affair.”

Testa will first recount the legend of La Fornarina and consider the painting by Raphael of a beautiful Judith Testa nude woman that has come to be identified as her portrait.

With the story and the painting in mind, she will present and discuss Picasso’s etchings – works so powerful and explicit in their sexual imagery that they have never been allowed to be exhibited in the United States.

The talk will take place at 5 p.m.

Monday, Feb. 6, in Room 100 (the auditorium) of the Arends Art Building, 330 Gilbert Drive, on the NIU campus. The talk is free and open to the public.

32 ‘Baby blues’ common after childbirth Dear Doctors: It’s been two weeks since our son was born, and my wife seems to be having a hard time. She cries easily and has a lot of anxiety. Is this just baby blues, like my mother says, or is it postpartum depression?

Dear Reader: Your lives have undergone an enormous change, and that’s at the heart of your wife’s difficulties. Both in the shortterm disruption of the so-called “baby blues” and the more serious struggle of postpartum depression, the physical, emotional and hormonal changes a woman goes through after she gives birth often can pose challenges.

First, let us reassure you at two weeks postpartum, it’s perfectly natural for a new mother to feel overwhelmed. Up to 80 percent of new mothers report symptoms of mood swings, anxiety, mild depression, weepiness and negative thoughts or feelings in the first few weeks after the baby arrives.

Your wife’s body not only is recovering from the physical and emotional rigors of the birth process, but it also is now returning to its pre-pregnancy state. That means she is experiencing a sudden drop in hormone levels – estrogen and progesterone in particular – which have been at record levels during her pregnancy. Add in sleep deprivation and the seismic changes to her daily routine as she learns new tasks and takes responsibility for a new life, and it’s not surprising she feels overwhelmed.

When these symptoms don’t go away after several weeks, or if they become more severe, then postpartum depression becomes a possibility. When this is the case, seeing a primary care physician is vital.

Symptoms of postpartum depression mirror those of major depression. These include a sad or empty feeling that won’t go away, feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness, pervasive pessimism, a change in sleeping or eating habits, withdrawal from loved ones

Meanwhile, there’s a lot you can do to help your wife right now. Simply listening is important. Get her to talk about how she’s feeling and what she’s going through so she knows you care and understand. It’s quite likely you both have some of the same feelings, and sharing them can help build up your bond.

Help around the house without being asked. Make a meal, do housework, arrange for her to have some time to herself. Something as simple as getting outside can make a big difference. A daily walk will be good for both of you. Even a drive through the neighborhood just to look around can bring welcome distraction.

The baby blues are an isolating experience that comes at a time of life when women are told they should be happiest. By stepping up to lend a hand, you’re not only helping your wife recover, you’re also setting the foundation to a parenting partnership.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY am a successful business proJeanne fessional in my Phillips mid-50s. I have put my children through college, and they have no student loans.

(My wife did not help with any of the college expenses. It was all on me.)

I finally am at a point in my life I can pursue my passion of buying a sports car. I always have been a car guy, and my wife knows it. When I bring up the subject of buying the car of my dreams, which is not very expensive, she tells me I will look like an idiot. In her next breath she says it’s OK if I buy a sports car if it is the one she wants, and of course, the one she wants is very expensive.

No matter how I broach the subject, she does not “get” it is not about her but about my passion as a car guy. How do I get her to see my side? – Revving Up In New York Dear Revving Up: If it’s your money paying for the car, you don’t have to get her to see your side. It will be yours – not hers – and you should buy the one that gives you pleasure and drive it to your heart’s content.

Dear Abby: I have been with “Roger” for 28 years. He basically is a good, honest man, but he thinks only of himself. When I had heart surgery, he left me alone at the hospital that night, not knowing if I would live or die. (Nothing would have kept me from his bedside.) I’ll be having knee surgery soon, and he won’t take the day off or a sick day to take me. He wants a friend of ours to do it.

These are just two samples of his lack of support for me. I guess there is no way to make someone care enough about you to put their conveniences aside. When we moved out of state, he said if he didn’t find a job, he was going back home. Where would that have left me?

Roger wouldn’t have anything at all if it weren’t for me. I know I should dump him, but after 28 years, I can’t pull the rug out from under him. He cops an attitude and makes me feel bad if I press the subject. I only wish he would do something for me from his heart, but I guess it isn’t there. Any advice, Abby? – His

But there is a third line; do you see it?

If East has the heart king, the slam is laydown with an endplay. Declarer wins with dummy’s heart ace, draws trumps, cashes his diamond winners and exits with a heart. Assuming East takes that trick, he must either lead a club around to the dummy or concede a ruff-and-sluff (South sluffs a club from his hand and ruffs on the board). Note also that if West does produce the heart king, the club finesse is still available.

Finally, yes, it would have been simpler if North had signed off in six no-trump. North has 12 tricks after taking the club finesse, even if it loses.

“For sale, typical English cricket table,” said the auction ad. But what is a cricket table? Is it used for sports like the English game of cricket? Does it have anything to do with the insect? No. The cricket table was first named and used during the 16th century. The French word “criquet” refers to its stick legs. And the table has three legs so it can be used where the floor is uneven. Remember your geometry - three points determine a plane, so all three legs of any length will touch the floor at the same time, while a four-legged table might wobble. Most antique cricket tables have triangular or round tops. Some have shelves halfway down the legs. It was a country furniture idea, and tables can be found that are made of sycamore, ash, oak, elm, cherry or walnut woods. A few have three drop leaves. In 2016, Thomaston Auctions sold an elaborate oak cricket table with sausage-turned legs and a T-stretcher for $1,170. *** Q: I have a pitcher decorated with flowers on both sides and marked on the bottom with a castle and the words “Leuchtenburg, Germany.” It’s 7 inches tall. I can’t find this city on the map. Can you identify this pitcher?

A: This mark was used by C.A. Lehman & Son of Kahla, Thuringia, Germany, from about 1910 to 1919.

The company was founded as a porcelain decorating shop by Carl August Lehmann and Paul Zierold in 1885. It began making porcelain

for export in 1895. The company merged with Franz Bauer Porcelain Manufactory in 1935 to form Bauer & Lehmann. Leuchtenburg isn’t a city, it’s the name of a castle in Seitenroda, Germany, a few miles from Kahla. *** Q: I have a Hummel boy doll but can’t find one that looks like it online. It’s 11 1/2 inches high and made of rubber with painted eyes and molded hair. His head, arms and legs are in very good condition.

There is a mark on the back with a bee inside a V. Can you tell me anything about its age and value?

A: Hummel porcelain figurines are based on the drawings of the German nun Sister Maria Innocentia, born Berta Hummel. They were first made in 1935 by the W. Goebel Porcelain Co. of Oeslau (now Rodental), Germany. The figurines were very popular and in the early 1950s, Goebel decided to transform the work of Sister Maria Innocentia into dolls. The earliest dolls had composition heads, arms and legs.

In 1953, Goebel began to make these parts with a rubber material, like your boy doll. Vinyl dolls were made in 1960, and dolls with porcelain heads and cloth bodies were made in the 1980s. Your doll is from the 1700 Series, which was made from 1953 until about 1959. He is called Peterle and is marked with the “full bee” trademark used by Goebel from 1950 until 1959. The dolls were sold dressed in cloth outfits, some with small accessories like a goose, stein or travel pack. It appears your doll’s clothing is a combination of pieces from other Hummel dolls and doesn’t have any accessories. Dolls like yours sell for $25 to $50. *** Q: Over 50 years ago my father gave me a collection of about 20 E. Berliner gramophone records from the late 1800s. Most are signed by the original artist, and they are names like The Sousa Band, F. Gianni, The Hayden Quartet, E. Spangler, etc. He thought they would be

valuable in time, and I think they might be. How can I find their value, and where can I sell them?

A: Emile Berliner (1851-1929) was a German-American credited with inventing the gramophone (phonograph) record, the first disc storage for recordings. He was granted his first patent for his method of recording on a flat disc in 1887, a time when cylinder recordings were popular. His first gramophone records were made in Germany for use on a toy gramophone.

Berliner founded the United States Gramophone Company in Washington, D.C. and made gramophone machines as well as gramophone records beginning in 1894. The first discs were hard rubber. A few were celluloid. Shellac was used beginning in 1895. Sound was recorded on a single side of a 7-inch disc, which held about two minutes of recording. Early gramophones were hand-cranked. Eldridge Johnson, who made gramophones for Berliner, acquired the patents and changed the name of the company to Victor Talking Machine Company in 1901. The largest collection of Berliner records is owned by the EMI (Electric and Musical Industries) Archive Trust in England.

Early Berliner recordings are rare and few past public sales are listed online. A few years ago, 46 records
