Hard to celebrate racist’s beating POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS I’m conflicted as to how to feel about seeing a self-proclaimed racist/fascist who calls for “peaceful ethnic cleansing” of the United States being punched in the face.

If you grew up watching WGN-TV, you probably remember the scene in the 1980 film “The Blues Brothers”: The Bluesmobile is stuck in traffic while a bunch of brown-shirted Nazis are spouting a bunch of Nazi nonsense, blocking traffic on a bridge.

“Illinois Nazis,” Elwood Blues (Dan Aykroyd) says from the driver’s seat.

“I hate Illinois Nazis,” Jake Blues (John Belushi) says.

Then Elwood floors it, a crowd parts, and the Nazis, fearing for their lives, jump off the bridge into the water below.

That feels good. Nazis, fascists, racists – they’re people that most of us find repugnant.

Seeing them forced to shut their mouths and literally jump off a bridge is a pleasing image.

That’s a lot funnier than if the Blues Brothers had just sneaked up on one of the Nazis and sucker-punched him.

A lot of people on the Internet are having fun with the video of a white nationalist named Richard Spencer, who was punched while doing an interview on a street Friday in Washington, D.C., after the Presidential Inauguration.

The clip has been all over social media, set to music and made into GIF images.

Spencer is a vile man who has called Martin Luther King Jr. “a fraud and degenerate,” envisions America as “an ethno-state that would be a gathering point for all Europeans.” He favors a “peaceful ethnic cleansing” of America.

He’s terrible.

I feel bad even naming him in this newspaper, but boy, he took a shot to the head from a man in a black hooded sweatshirt whose

Spencer was in the middle of offering a smug explanation why he was wearing “Pepe the Frog,” a cartoon character featured in many racist internet memes, on his lapel when he got clocked.

On the one hand, people with beliefs such as Spencer’s shouldn’t feel so comfortable smiling and chatting up their views. If you’re going to talk a lot of trash about people’s race or ethnicity, or their mothers, or generally insult them and our American values – well, sometimes those positions will be rejected with more than simple words.

On the other hand, making a victim of someone such as Spencer only furthers his rotten cause. We shouldn’t give a racist any claim to the moral high ground.

Regardless of what Spencer might say about Martin Luther King Jr., King himself would not have celebrated the attack. King was, after all, a man who preached nonviolence, one tenet of which is the concept that the universe is on the side of justice, that progress toward ending injustice may be slow, but it is also inexorable.

He also preached that no amount of violence could drive hate from the hearts of racists.

“Hate cannot drive out hate,” King said.

“Only love can do that.”

DeKalb Sanitary District planning $52 million plant upgrade

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A $52 million modernization project for the DeKalb Sanitary District’s outdated facility off Sycamore Road might begin as early as this summer, pending board approval and a loan commitment from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

This is the second phase of an improvement plan to keep the 90-yearold facility in compliance with stricter federal EPA regulations on water quality.

These regulations are partly aimed at reducing nutrients, including phosphorus, which encourages algae growth, which in turn saps oxygen from water, from entering the Mississippi River and out to the Gulf of Mexico, said district engineer Mike Holland.

“Right now, we’re not capable of removing phosphorus from the water,” Holland said. “We just do not have the ability, as it’s not something that has been required of us historically, but we’ve been told by the EPA starting in 2017 that we need to start removing it.”

Wastewater in DeKalb is treated using some methods that date as far back as the 1920s. The treated water is discharged to the Kishwaukee River, which flows into the Rock River and eventually the Mississippi River.

Executive Director Mark Eddington said the district will take out a low-interest loan through the EPA, with an interest rate of 1.75 percent over 20 years, for the full amount of the project. The district will repay the loan in installments of about $3.4 million a year.

“We’re sitting on roughly $12 million in reserves to bear the brunt of these early payments for the project,” Eddington said. “We don’t anticipate any significant rate increases to be able to fund the project right now.

We’ve been saving money for a long time gearing up toward this.”

The district is expected to receive a renewed permit from the EPA on May 1, and needs to begin work on the improvements before then or risk being found in violation of the revised standards.

The project would require the demolition of 19 homes along Hollister Avenue acquired by the district. Some of these homes currently are being rented.

The land would be used for a new administration building near Sycamore Road with parking lots, operations buildings and roadways leading to the plant and facilities.

The district board approved a plan to seek bids for the work Jan. 18.

The demolition project is set to be bid on within a month and would start

by June 1 if approved by the board.

Eddington said this would cost about $350,000 and likely would be paid separately through reserve funding.

The bidding on the facility upgrades will be advertised Sunday and will open March 15.

One of the features of the new facility will be an on-site generator powered by bio fuel, which is created from the breakdown of biodegradable ma-

terials. The facility currently burns off gas generated by this process.

Eddington said that even if improvement plans fell through, the district still would look into developing a generator, which would cost about $3 million.

The district spends about $400,000 to $500,000 a year to power the facility. Eddington added that the combustible gases could power about half of the facility, and if the generator works well, there will be extra space for another.

“That’s our second-highest fixed cost after personnel, so anything we can do to recover the resources that are in the sewage we receive turn that into gas that we can use to fire engines that produce power is a huge win for us environmentally and costwise,” Eddington said.

In order to promote the plant as a regional wastewater treatment facility, Eddington said the district also wants to change its name to be more accommodating to neighboring com-

munities.

“We want to be an option for neighboring communities if they want to get out of the wastewater treatment business and just stick a pipeline in the ground, we want to be a low-cost option for our neighboring communities,” he said.

Holland said that the potential for the facility to generate its own power is another reason why regionalization is a good course of action.

“You can’t provide enough fuel for a generator unless you have enough waste coming in, and a plant our size is just big enough to run one of these engines,” Holland said. “If you’re looking at instead of it as a waste but as a resource, and you collect as much resource as you can in one place where you can really utilize it, we think that is a strength.”

The board of trustees is expected to make a final decision in April or May once all of the numbers on construction and financing are finalized.

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Former DeKalb Public Library Director Dee Coover said that one of the best compliments she received in her 22 years on the job came during one of her final weekly tours of the building before her retirement.

“There was a young couple (on the tour) and you could tell that it was not the man’s idea to come,” Coover said.

However, as the tour continued and the couple saw the considerable expansion to the library since 2014, the man stopped and told Coover that he wished he had a library like the one in DeKalb growing up, and that she was continuing to change lives.

“The idea that he could see immediately that the library was changing people’s lives was why we do what we

do, in a nutshell,” Coover said. “For this young man to get it in one visit, that we’re giving people the opportunity to have knowledge and imagination absolutely free, was my ultimate compliment. Not just mine, but the community’s compliment, too.”

Coover retired Dec. 31, after a 22-year tenure at the library that included 10 years as its director. Emily Faulkner replaced her in the role Jan. 16.

One of the biggest struggles in Coover’s career came from the library’s $25.3 million expansion and renovation project and trying to help the public understand her vision of providing accessible information to the public.

The two-year project more than tripled the library’s size by adding a 45,000-square-foot addition that opened

in January 2016. It also included renovations to the historic, 1930s-era Haish Library building. The library’s historic section reopened in September.

The DeKalb Chamber of Commerce named the library its 2016 “Business of the Year” in recognition of its contribution to the community earlier this month.

“We wanted the building to be preserved and rehabilitated and to have somewhere to access information for the next 100 years as best we could,” Coover said. “The question was how to build a facility where no one is invisible. It wasn’t just to be modernized but to be totally inclusive.”

In her retirement, Coover plans to try creative writing and is working on a murder mystery.

“I’m a very good critical reader, and I’ve never tried anything creative,

so I bet I’ll be terrible for a long time,” Coover said. “I’ve got to be disciplined, so right now, I’m pulling back and being very serious about trying to write, and until I get a handle of how I am at it, I won’t do anything formal.”

She recommended the novel “A Man Called Ove” by Swedish novelist Fredrik Backman to any reader and encourages any resident to tour the library.

“I think the use of public libraries as a child really resonates with people and they may quit using it later due to the internet, but that resonance is almost a universal experience,” Coover said. “One of my passions of the library is that wherever you go in the U.S., there’s a public library that anybody can go to. It’s an amazing concept to have free access to public libraries for all.”

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore School District 427 Board voted unanimously Tuesday to move forward with a $2.3 million budget reduction for fiscal 2018.

Superintendent Kathy Countryman said the reduction is part of a three-year plan to reach a balanced budget by the end of the 2017-18 school year, strengthen the district’s fund balance and reduce its deficit.

“Next year will be Year 3 of that plan, and at the end of that year, we indicated our goal is to have a balanced budget,” she said.

The projected balance for the end of fiscal 2018 is $6,228,570, about $71,000 more than this year’s pro-

jected end balance of $6,157,399, according to board documents.

The number has been declining from $22,089,655 at the end of fiscal 2012, the documents show.

Board member Eric Jones said the sooner the balance can level out, the less financial damage it will do to the district.

“I was hoping [the reduction] wouldn’t be as severe as $2.3 million,” Jones said. “But we have the responsibility to level out that curve, because it ultimately has to level out.”

Board President Jim Dombek said board members would have to “play it by ear” as they go forward with planning next year’s budget over the coming months and continue a conservative approach.

“It’s obviously going to have to be flexible because we don’t know what the state funding is going to be,” Dombek said. “We have no clue.”

Countryman said district officials would be meeting with program managers to work on a staff budget over the next month, and in February they would present their findings to the board along with any personnel reduction plan deemed necessary.

“Over the past two years we’ve had to do some personnel reductions, and so that’s been difficult,” she said. “But we know that financially this is what we need to do.”

Countryman said a tentative budget would be brought to the board in June before a final budget would be presented in August.

Critics of Senate budget plan multiply as skepticism grows

By JOHN O’CONNOR and KIANNAH SEPEDA–MILLER The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – A plan to increase the income tax was adjusted upward slightly and a tax on services such as car repair and laundry surfaced Tuesday even as other parts of a monstrous Illinois Senate plan to end the nation’s longest budget standoff ran into stiff opposition and skepticism grew about its success in a floor vote.

The Senate’s buzz saw approach – promised bipartisan action by month’s end – to breeching a nearly two-yearlong budget stalemate with Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner sputtered immediately on the day the 13-measure package of legislation was vetted in public hearings. Democrats who control the Senate announced there would be no committee votes – endorsements to send legislation to the floor – but that they’d take testimony and adjust rules to permit a full chamber vote anyway.

“The goal is to pass the bill,” said Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. “This is a tough sell.”

But the problem is mammoth: An estimated end-of-year deficit of $5.3 billion in June, $11 billion in past-due bills to vendors and service-providers, and a gap of $130 billion in what’s needed to pay retirees promised pensions.

On top of that, Rauner and Democrats have sparred since 2015 on how to fashion a budget plan. Rauner insists on changing the law to benefit business, limit union power and crimp politicians’ power. Democrats say those discussions should take place apart from how much to raise taxes and cut spending to balance the books.

Rauner’s budget office released an analysis last week that the Senate plan only reduced the year-end deficit by $1 billion. But neither Republicans nor Democrats were surprised, knowing it will take several years to dig the state out of the red. Nonetheless, Olympia Fields Democratic Sen. Toi Hutchinson presented an income-tax plan that increases the personal rate from 3.75 percent to 4.99 percent, instead of 4.75 percent as previously proposed.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – A Chicago man was sentenced Tuesday to nine months in prison for hacking the electronic accounts of 30 celebrities and stealing private information, including nude videos and photos.

Edward Majerczyk, 29, also was ordered to pay $5,700 in restitution for counseling services for one undisclosed celebrity victim whose photos were disseminated online.

Majerczyk is accused of orchestrating a phishing scheme that illegally accessed more than 300 email and other online accounts, including those belonging to actress Jennifer Lawrence.

According to his plea deal, Majerczyk sent emails to his victims that appeared to have come from internet service providers seeking usernames and passwords. Chicago Blues Festival moving to Millennium Park

CHICAGO – The 34th annual Chicago Blues Festival is getting a new home this year in the city’s lakefront Millennium Park after being held in Grant Park.

City organizers said Tuesday that headliners for this year’s festival will be Billy Branch and the Sons of the Blues, Gary Clark Jr., William Bell and Ronnie Baker Brooks. A full schedule will be announced this spring.

The free festival will be from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily from June 9 to 11. Headliners will play at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion.

This year’s festival will features the contributions of rap, rock, pop and hip-hop on blues music. Grammy and Academy Award-winning musician and Chicago native Che “Rhymefest” Smith on opening night will perform a tribute to the influence blues has had on rap and hip-hop.

Video gambling leads to growth in revenue

CHICAGO – A new report shows that roughly 3,000 video gambling termi-

nals opened in Illinois last year, generating growing profits for some communities.

The figures released by the Illinois Gambling Board also reveal that gambling revenue rose from $228 million in 2015 to $277 million during 2016, the Chicago Tribune reported. This growth comes as state lawmakers decide whether to expand gambling as part of a wide-ranging budget plan.

The report finds that customers poured more than $1 billion more into terminals this year than they did in 2015. But the number of video terminals opening each year has slowed considerably since becoming legal in 2012.

A 2016 Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability report also cautioned that video gambling negatively impacts state casino revenues – especially around Chicago – by increasing competition for customer dollars.

Services set for police officer killed in crash

BLOOMINGDALE – Funeral services are being held for a suburban Chicago police officer who died after crashing an SUV while responding to a call.

WLS-TV reported that a visitation for Bloomingdale police Officer Raymond Murrell is scheduled Tuesday in West Chicago.

A police escort will take the 27-year-old’s body from the funeral home in Roselle to

Wheaton Bible Church in West Chicago, where the wake will start with a walkthrough for law enforcement officers.

Murrell’s funeral will be held at the church on Wednesday.

Murrell was killed in a one-vehicle crash on Thursday. Bloomingdale Police Chief Frank Giammarese said Murrell was on the force less than a year.

He described Murrell as a “shining star” and said he and other officer were recently recognized for saving a heart attack victim.

Trump signs taken down in Chicago have gone missing

CHICAGO – Two Chicago street signs honoring President Donald Trump that were pulled down after the then-candidate characterized the city to a “war zone” have gone missing.

Mike Claffey of the city’s Department of Transportation said he doesn’t know what happened to the signs since they were taken down last month after the City Council voted to remove them.

The signs had been displayed on posts near the Trump International Hotel & Tower in downtown Chicago.

New proposal aims to protect pharmacy customers

CHICAGO – In an effort to increase pharmacy accountability and ensure public safety, Gov. Bruce Rauner is calling for stronger regulations for pharmacy consultations in Illinois.

The governor said an investigation conducted by the Chicago Tribune revealed flaws in the state’s current pharmacy system that puts patients at risk.

The investigation, published in December, found that 52 percent of 255 independent and chain pharmacies tested sold potentially dangerous drug pairs to reporters without a warning.

“Our team conducted an immediate review to find out what pro-active steps state government could take to address those gaps,” Rauner said in a statement.

The proposal submitted to the Illinois Register would demand pharmacists to advise patients about risky drug combinations and other important issues when changing a prescription or buying a medication for the first time.

State law only requires a pharmacist to offer recommendations to a patient at the cash register, with a brief inquiry, such as, “Any questions for the pharmacist today?”

Trump advances Dakota, Keystone XL pipelines

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump moved swiftly Tuesday to advance the controversial Keystone XL and Dakota Access oil pipelines, signing executive actions to aggressively overhaul America’s energy policy and deal a sharp blow to Barack Obama’s legacy on climate change.

Obama had personally halted the Keystone XL project, which was to bring oil from Canada to the U.S., and major protest demonstrations have frozen work on the Dakota pipeline.

Trump, in his continuing effort to undo the past eight years of a Democratic president, invited the Keystone builder, TransCanada, to resubmit its application to the State Department for a presidential permit to construct and operate the pipeline. The company said it would reapply.

Obama halted the proposed pipeline in late 2015, declaring it would undercut U.S. efforts to clinch a global climate change deal that was a centerpiece of his environmental agenda.

Trump also ordered the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to quickly review and approve construction and easement requests for the Dakota Access pipeline, a project that has led to major protests by American Indian groups and their supporters.

“From now on we are going to start making pipelines in the United States,” Trump said from the Oval Office, where he also vowed to require the actual pipe for Keystone to be manufactured in America.

The 1,179-mile Keystone XL pipeline would run from Canada to Nebraska, where it would join other lines already leading to refineries along the Gulf Coast.

Trump directed the State Department and other agencies to make a decision within 60 days of a final application and declared that a 2014 State Department environmental study satisfies required reviews under environmental and endangered species laws. Environmental groups promised a legal challenge, arguing a new application requires a new review.

State Department approval is needed because the pipeline would cross the northern U.S border.

As a practical matter, the Dakota Access project likely is to be completed first. The company building it said it is complete except for a section that would pass under the Missouri River near a camp in North Dakota where pipeline opponents are demonstrating.

Allegations of misconduct merit an investigation

Allegations of police and prosecutorial misconduct in the murder case against Jack D. McCullough deserve an investigation, but five months since they first were raised, no one has been willing to touch them.

McCullough, 77, of Seattle, was convicted in 2012 in the 1957 kidnapping and murder of 7-year-old Maria Ridulph. After his conviction was set aside and charges dismissed in April, questions arose about statements made by former Seattle police detective Irene Lau. Former DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack said in August that video evidence exists that contradicts statements made both by DeKalb County prosecutors and by Lau in pretrial proceedings and at McCullough’s September 2012 trial.

Schmack said his office would have a conflict of interest in investigating the allegations because it would be investigating its own conduct. He asked a judge to appoint a special prosecutor to look into the claims.

Schmack is no longer in office, but his successor, DeKalb County State’s Attorney Rick Amato, said he can’t investigate the claims either because the request mentioned “current” employees at the state’s attorney’s office.

Meanwhile, records show DeKalb County Presiding Judge Robbin Stuckert has asked 10 different prosecutors’ offices to help with the case, including state’s attorneys in nine nearby counties and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, to take on the investigation. All have declined. Several cited a lack of resources. State law requires the judge look for a public prosecutor to take the case at no cost to the county before hiring a private attorney to serve as a special prosecutor.

Other prosecutors’ unwillingness to help and the potential cost of a hiring a special prosecutor should not be enough to shelve these allegations, however. They require a thorough investigation by a prosecutor who can decide whether charges are warranted.

Any investigation, no matter who conducts it, should have clear parameters, that should not be expanded without authorization. We do not want taxpayers to finance a fishing expedition against anyone connected with this case.

However, Schmack clearly believed the charges had some merit – he wouldn’t have requested a special prosecutor if he thought otherwise.

Although he no longer is in office, his request should be heeded.

We understand that Stuckert is seeking another state’s attorney’s office to take on the case because then the county would not have to pay for the investigation. However, a private lawyer should be hired to handle the case if another agency will not agree to take it soon.

The integrity of our justice system should be of the utmost importance to all who believe in the rule of law.

Allegations of misconduct by police or prosecutors in the McCullough case merit the same close examination as criminal charges against any other citizens would.

Trump’s heartless fee hike? Not quite One of the Obama administration’s final actions was to slash the fee mortgage borrowers must pay for Federal Housing Administration insurance on eligible loans. Democrats accused him of heartlessly hiking costs for the FHA’s low- and moderate-income clientele by $500 a year on a typical $200,000 loan. “One hour after talking about helping working people and ending the cabal in Washington that hurts people, he signs a regulation that makes it more expensive for new homeowners to buy mortgages,” said Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. Well, no. First, the proposed reduction had not taken effect, so no borrower is “hurt,” in the sense of seeing his or her current costs go up. Second, the Obama administration itself increased this fee four times between 2010 and 2013 – for the very good reason that the FHA’s capital was below congressionally required levels. The FHA ultimately did require a $1.7 billion federal cash infusion in 2013, and only regained the legal minimum 2 percent capital level in fiscal 2015. Even after the proposed Obama reduction, overall FHA insurance fees to the borrower (including an upfront payment) would have been slightly higher than they were when Barack Obama took office.

Yet even the current level might not be prudent, given the realities of the housing market and of the FHA’s $1 trillion portfolio. FHA borrowers have riskier credit profiles than those who are eligible for nongovernment-backed loans. That’s why lenders will serve them only if Uncle Sam, in effect, co-signs. What’s new is a rapidly increasing proportion of FHA-insured loans are originated not by banks but by so-called nonbanks with such names as PennyMac and Quicken Loans. These institutions generally hold less capital than banks.

This may make them – and the taxpayers who are indirectly on the hook for their FHA loans – vulnerable to a market correction.

Banks have been exiting the FHA market in part because of the regulatory crackdown under the Dodd-Frank law. Nonbanks filled the gap, so much so that they accounted for 83 percent of all new FHA loans in fiscal 2016.

The Obama administration’s last-minute price cut would have been a boon to the nonbank lending industry, not just to FHA-eligible home buyers, while imposing potential costs and risks on all other taxpayers and home buyers. Given recent financial instability – both at the FHA and in housing generally – the new administration was perfectly justified in undoing it.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Inaugural address filled with magical thinking It was, arguably, the most telling moment of Donald Trump’s inauguration speech.

People want good schools, neighborhoods and jobs, said the incoming president. “But for too many of our citizens, a different reality exists: mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities; rusted-out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation; an education system flush with cash, but which leaves our young and beautiful students deprived of all knowledge; and the crime and the gangs and the drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential.

problems. And maybe as he’s speaking, as you’re under the spell of it, it sounds like wisdom. But the next morning, you sober up and see it for the hogwash it is.

Unfortunately, America has not sobered up yet.

It will soon. If the country is even halfway serious about resolving its challenges, it has no choice.

The magical thinking embodied in Trump’s speech is not a recipe for fixing problems, nor even for addressing them. It is, rather, a primal scream, viscerally satisfying in the short term but masturbatory and useless in the long term. At some point, in the not-distant future, after poverty, unemployment, miseducation, crime and drugs have not magically disappeared, one hopes the people who fell for this act will realize that.

Lasting change does not come because you yell at a problem. Lasting change comes because you work at it, because you commit to using the best ideas and the best minds to produce the best results. It’s not perfect, but it’s the process we have.

In the meantime, if there is a silver lining here, it is that the GOP now has the White House, the Congress and no excuses. So the rest of us would like to know when we can expect America to be “great again”?

Is there a date the party would like to share?

Yes, the question is tongue in cheek, but it is also meant to point out what has always been painfully obvious and became even more so after the new president finished ordering poverty to get out of town by sundown.

Namely, that it was all always an act, a fake, a con, even if voters have been slow to figure that out.

Bluster is not governance and the world doesn’t stop being complicated because you tell it to. Maybe even Donald Trump doesn’t know that yet.

But he’s about to find out.

That has languished since the purchase last year and improvements in service are critically needed as mental health issues have escalated around the county since the hospital closed its inpatient unit. More on that later.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Death penalty IS the answer

To the Editor: This is in response to the editorial “Death penalty is not the answer” that appeared on page 14 of the Tuesday, Jan. 14, Daily Chronicle.

There are about 15,000 murders each year in the United States.

The arrest rate for murder is around 66 percent, meaning 10,000 people are arrested for murder each year. (Only 37.3 percent of the 756 homicides committed in Illinois in 2015 were cleared through the arrest (or death) of the offenders, according to the Murder Accountability Project).

Since 1976, the U.S. has averaged 30 executions for murder each year. Meaning if you commit murder, the chance of your being executed is 30 in 15,000 or 1 in 5,000 – which is the probability of a hole-in-one in golf.

The author is saying that the death penalty doesn’t deter capital crimes. Given the probability of being executed, is anyone surprised that it doesn’t?

About 4,000 people are convicted of murder every year. Let’s say we had

4,000 executions every year.

And the trial, sentencing, appeal and execution all took place within a year of a person arrested. Bear in mind, the Sixth Amendment provides that, “[i]n all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy trial.”

Would people still say the death penalty doesn’t deter capital crimes?

We know it would deter at least those 4,000 from ever committing murder again.

Kaneland takes control with 10-0 run in 1st half

ecarifio@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Jamie Martens was cutting to the basket for some early points, and the Kaneland defense was making sure Sycamore’s Kylie Feuerbach and Kate Majerus couldn’t return the favor as the Knights topped Sycamore, 48-45, on Tuesday.

The Knights (18-4, 7-3 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) scored 10 straight points between the first and second quarters to take early control, and while the Spartans (15-7, 6-4) got within one and had the ball in the fourth quarter, Kaneland hung on for the win.

Feuerbach and Majerus combined for just seven first-half points as Kaneland led 25-18 at the break.

“We settled in a little bit, but in a game you know is going to be close from the beginning, you can’t wait until the third quarter,” Sycamore coach Adam Wickness said. “That’s the bottom line is we waited until the third quarter to play.”

Wickness said he also was not pleased that the defense gave up 25 first-half points, including nine to Martens on 4-of-4 shooting in the first 16 minutes.

“We’ve been pretty good about holding teams to the 30s, and they had 25 at the half,” Wickness said.

“We talked about that and stressed that at halftime, that that was unacceptable against a team that was this quality.”

With coach Ernie Colombe out sick, Tom Dillivan coached the Knights. He said the goal from the start was to shut down Feuerbach and Majerus.

Feuerbach finished with 19 points, and Majerus had 12 – including three 3-pointers in the third quarter – but Dillivan said he was pleased with his team’s defense.

“We had talked to (Colombe) last night, talked to him again today, and what strategy we wanted,” Dillivan said. “Those are two great ballplayers and they are going to be all-conference. That’s a good ballclub.

So we knew we were going to have our hands full, but we just had great help off the ball trying to limit their touches as much as we could, and we got away with it.”

Sycamore trailed 39-38 with less than three minutes left when Maria Wright had her layup blocked

by Grace Ringel. On the next possession, Martens hit a pair of free throws to push the lead back to four with 2:31 left. She finished with 21 on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor.

After that, Sycamore wasn’t in position to tie it again.

“It does sting to lose this one because it had such regional implications,” Wickness said. “Kaneland is a good team, they played really hard and they did a great job on Kylie, making her feel pressured, and taking away Kate for most of the game.”

Struggling from the 3-point line this season (26.7 percent entering the game), he’s seen his playing time dwindle – playing four minutes at Bowling Green, two minutes against Miami (Ohio) and didn’t play against Ohio. On Tuesday, he made back-to-back 3-pointers in the first half and finished with six points in 11 minutes.

Beyond the stats: A contestant sank a 3-pointer during a contest in-between contests to win $800.

They said it: “We’re still searching, but we have 11 games left,” Montgomery said. “We can figure it out.”

Mistakes cost Barbs Mizgalski scores 24,

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The DeKalb girls basketball team kept it close throughout three quarters against Morris, but at the end mistakes on both sides of the ball kept them from notching another win in a 49-38 loss on Tuesday night.

“We made just enough mistakes to lose by 10,” DeKalb coach Elliot Whitefield said.

The Barbs (5-19 overall, 1-8 in Northern Illinois Big 12) led most of the first quarter and played impressive defense, causing six first half turnovers, five of which came in the first quarter. By the end of the first quarter, Morris began to settle in on defense. Morris junior guard Mya Shannon scored 10 of her points in the second quarter.

“I wish I could have 10 of her. (Shannon) is the most competitive player I know. She has always been a smart instinctive player, but now she is becoming sideline smart too, like a coach on the floor,” Morris head coach Kate Carey said.

Morris improved to 13-9 overall and 5-5 in conference.

After the explosive second quarter by Shannon, who finished the game with 21

points on 10 of 13 from the floor, Morris took a 7-point lead into the half. Both teams came out of the locker rooms and continued their defensive pressure in the third quarter. Morris ran a fullcourt press, which caused many of the mistakes that Whitefield talked about.

“We can’t turn the ball over 19 times and expect to win,” Whitefield said.

Whitefield did have praise for his teams effort tonight. He spoke highly on the willingness of players like freshman Haley Westberg and sophomore Uriah Hegwood to get on the floor and get after loose balls. He also was grateful for the leadership of his two seniors, Danielle Stiles and Hannah Hickey, who both brought a great effort to the court tonight.

The Barbs will face off next with the Sycamore Spartans at the annual First National Challenge, which will be played at the Convocation Center on Friday. The girls will begin at 6 p.m. with the boys to follow.

“I am glad we got to play Morris first,” Whitefield said. “Morris is a spitting image of Sycamore in their style of defense. It gives us a chance to see what we need to do better to get a win on Friday.”

Spartans top ACC

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Spartans defeated the Aurora Central Catholic Chargers, 69-49, on Tuesday.

The Spartans controlled the pace of the game, capped by an 17-2 run in the third quarter.

Sycamore (8-10) had plenty of scoring from its starters. After held being scoreless until the 4:12 mark in second quarter, Ty Sulaver ended the game with 12 points and four rebounds. Jack Mizgalski had the game-high with 24 points, accompanied by three rebounds and two steals.

Connor Weckerly was the main focus early on as the team looked to

work the ball down in the paint. He had 18 points, six assists and four rebounds.

“These kids did a great job tonight,” Sycamore head coach Ryan Picolotti said. “They really executed the game plan. We wanted to get the ball inside. We have been struggling with the 3-pointer, so we want to start with scoring inside out.”

The Chargers (14-4) couldn’t seem to get in a rhythm with countless turnovers. Chargers head coach Nathan Drye said that his team just couldn’t seem to get anything going on the court.

“We just got out-executed,” Drye said. “They took advantage of what they do well, and we didn’t offer much resistance.”

DeKALB – Kent State senior Jimmy Hall came out on top in the battle between two of the best bigs in the Mid-American Conference.

Hall posted a double-double while Northern Illinois senior big man Marin Maric was held to just three field-goal attempts and the Golden Flashes held onto their second half lead for a 73-66 victory over the Huskies on Tuesday night at the NIU Convocation Center.

The Huskies (12-8, 4-3 MAC West) led by one in the second half when freshman guard Eugene German hit

a runner to make it 41-40 with 16:30 remaining, but Kent State (11-9, 3-4 MAC East) went on a 6-0 run with three layups to go ahead for good.

NIU would get close to retaking the lead, but would only be able to cut it to one on two separate occasions – the last of which came when senior guard Aaric Armstead hit a jumper to make it 65-64 with 3:42 left in the game.

“With three minutes to go, I felt good,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said. “They out-toughed us (down the stretch). We had a few turnovers and a few missed shots and that was the difference.”

The Huskies struggled down the stretch, committing two turnovers and missing both of their field-goal attempts in the final minute of the game – causing groans from the crowd of 868 at the NIU Convocation Center. Fox embraces opportunity in Mobile

mpotash@suntimes.com MOBILE, Ala. – As we know all too well by now, John Fox doesn’t like to evaluate players in the media. So the only time he was asked about a prospect who stood out after Senior Bowl practice when he met with Bears beat writers Tuesday was in jest.

“You guys pick one. You watched practice.” Fox said. “I’m still learning everyone’s name.”

This is a new experience for Fox, no doubt about it. The only other time he coached a team that finished as poorly as the 3-13 Bears in his 15 seasons as an NFL head coach, he was fired – after finishing 2-14 with the Carolina Panthers in 2010. But that team was on the way down.

The Bears are rebuilding, so Fox and his coaching staff – most of his staff, anyway – will get a third year that begins in the deep South, coaching the North team in the Senior Bowl.

While acknowledging the unpleasantness of “the record it takes to get here,” Fox is determined to make the most of the opportunity. The Bears’ coaching staff is getting an up-close look at several top college prospects for the 2017 draft – although almost certainly nobody who will be considered at No. 3 overall, the more important consolation prize of such a miserable season.

“The advantage of coaching this .. is being able to be with them in a meeting setting; you have meals with them; you

live with them,” Fox said. “It’s not just nighttime interviews when they’re worn out and tired. You get to see how they conduct themselves in (team) meetings; how they take notes; how they practice.

And you don’t get any closer than this.

“When you look at tape, you’re looking at a helmet and shoulder pads and a jersey number – they can be robots for all you know. But you get to know the person, the guy, how he competes; how he deals with things, whether it’s stress or adversity or whatever they deal with. And guys that can handle that the best usually have the best success in the NFL.” It remains to be seen just how much of an advantage that is, and how well the Bears can parlay that advantage into another solid draft after the stellar job by general manager Ryan Pace and the personnel staff in 2016 – when three draft picks made the Pro Football Writers of America all-rookie team: outside linebacker Leonard Floyd, center Cody Whitehair and running back Jordan Howard. (Only Whitehair was at the Senior Bowl last season.)

The Cowboys struck gold with Dak Prescott last year, but he wasn’t even on the team that Jason Garrett and his

staff were coaching. The Cowboys made the quantum leap from 4-12 to 14-2 last season. But most recent coaches in the Senior Bowl didn’t last long – Gus Bradley (Jaguars), Ken Whisenhunt (Titans), Mike Smith (Falcons), Dennis Allen (Raiders), Jim Schwartz (Lions), Leslie Frazier (Vikings), Mike Shanahan (Redskins) among them.

The last coaches to make the playoffs after coaching in the Senior Bowl were Marvin Lewis in 2011 and Schwartz in 2010. The last coach to make the Super Bowl after coaching in the Senior Bowl was the Seahawks’ Mike Holmgren in 2002. The last coach to win the Super Bowl after coaching in the Senior Bowl was the Steelers’ Bill Cowher in 2001.

With two Super Bowl appearances on his résumé, Fox has earned the benefit of the doubt that he can beat those odds.

The Bears under Fox are at a critical point after only two seasons. Any advantage – such as getting to know what makes a guy tick – can make a difference.

“Anytime you’re dealing with people, it’s not an exact science,” Fox said.

“My experience has been [that] when you have that leadership ability, usually it carries over, and it’s been a positive trait.”

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – There were plenty of cheers and the Sycamore “turkey chant” at the end of conference play, as bowler Lanni Howerton took a perfect game into the final frame of the final game.

She got down to her last two throws, but a stubborn 7 pin kept her from a perfect 300. She finished the game with a 288.

Her performance helped power the Spartans to a whopping 3,646 series total and a win over conference and crosstown rival DeKalb, which had a final total of 3,256.

“After the 10th one, I was freaking out and my friend was crying,” Howerton said. “I went and hugged her.

And then I went back and I bowled. I

Howerton led all bowlers with a series total of 649, powered by her 288 in the final game. Megan and Amanda Kolberg added series totals of 639 and 624, respectively, to help push the Spartans to victory.

The Barbs missed their chance to tie Sycamore for the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference title, but coach Mike Davis was proud of his team.

“We did great. We bowled our high series all year,” Davis said. “We just ran into a 3,646, which is phenomenal. Coming off not a very good season last year, we are rising to the occasion. … The better competition we play, the better we seem to bowl.”

Reagan Harold led the Barbs with a 596 series, with a high of 230 in the first game.

The Barbs have another chance at beating the Spartans this weekend, as both teams compete in the Dixon Invitational.

By the numbers: Megan Kolberg closed out the first game with five straight strikes for the Spartans, while Taylor Mershon had four strikes, then three more to close out the second game.

Beyond the stats: Both Kolbergs, Megan and Amanda, started the final game with three strikes each.

They said it: Hampton on the crosstown rivalry: “I think both teams really get up. I know (the bowlers) like to trash-talk a little across social media. … It’s fun. I think it’s important.”

Up next: The Spartans will be home Thursday against Waubonsie Valley.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Dwyane Wade scored 21 points, Jimmy Butler added 20 and the Bulls beat the Orlando Magic, 100-92, on Tuesday night for their second straight victory.

Facing an Orlando team that was missing three of its four top guards, Wade and Butler took full advantage with drives to the basket and pull-up jumpers as the Bulls pulled away in the fourth quarter.

The turnover-prone Magic simply could not keep pace with a Bulls team that is going through point guard issues of its own with the surprising benching of Michael Carter-Williams.

Nikola Vucevic had 20 points for the Magic, who have dropped two straight and 11 of their last 14 games.

The teams exchanged leads early in the third quarter before the Bulls began attacking the paint to extend their lead to 78-73. Robin Lopez had a couple of nice hook shots in the paint and then Butler got going late in the quarter to help the Bulls get a little separation.

Steelers QB Roethlisberger not ruling out retirement

PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger isn’t sure he’ll be back in 2017.

Roethlisberger said during his weekly appearance on 93.7 The Fan on Tuesday that he is going to take some time to evaluate whether he wants to keep playing. The two-time Super Bowl winner will turn 35 in March and has missed time in each of the past two seasons with knee issues. Roethlisberger is under contract through 2020.

Coach Mike Tomlin said Roethlisberger has mentioned possible retirement to the coaching staff at various points. Longtime Pittsburgh tight end Heath Miller, a good friend of Roethlisberger’s, retired last February at age 33.

Tomlin said he’s not alarmed by Roethlisberger questioning his future, adding Roethlisberger is “the most significant component of what we do.”

Celebrate Chinese New Year by pulling out the stir fryer

t the same time many of us are packing away our noisemakers and Champagne glasses, people all over the world are just beginning to prepare for the new year.

Chinese New Year is a celebration of the lunar new year – the first day on a calendar based on the phases of the moon. The lunar new year is celebrated all over the world (this year on Jan. 28), with each country and culture having its own different traditions and celebrations. The Chinese New Year festival is widely celebrated in China, but also in other countries such as Singapore, Taiwan and Malaysia, where there are many people of Chinese origin.

Chinese New Year is a huge celebration for Chinese-Americans as well, and there are tons of traditions that help ring in the festival. Alongside gifts, parties and decorations, special “lucky” foods are presented to bring prosperity in the upcoming year, such as coin-shaped dumplings, long noodles to represent longevity, and oranges, which are a Chinese symbol of luck and good fortune.

Since food is so central to the celebration, a Chinese-inspired dinner is a great way for you and your family to share in the tradition of our friends and neighbors. China is a very large country with many regions and a long history, which means there are many variations in what is considered traditional.

Most Americans have become familiar with a style of Chinese food that bears only a mild resemblance to what diners in China eat every day. While American-style Chinese food may not always be authentic to the flavors of China, it is an opportunity to introduce our families, especially children with developing palates, to flavors they may not experience every day.

Despite our best efforts, kids aren’t always open to trying new foods, so in this recipe for Chinese Take-Out Chicken and Broccoli, we offer an easy and familiar dish to teach an essential technique in Asian cuisine: stir frying, in which most ingredients can be used interchangeably, like shrimp or pork instead of chicken.

Shortcut makes easier weeknight curry

The scent of Thai curry cooking is very possibly one of the greatest kitchen smells ever.

Ingredients such as lemongrass, chilies, garlic, ginger, coconut milk, and spices like coriander and cumin all mingle together to create a heady perfume that pulls people to the table.

There are as many versions of Thai curry as there are provinces of the country – perhaps as many as there are Thai cooks. Thailand is at the center of Southeast Asia, and its cooking has influenced and been influenced by the cuisines of many countries, from India to China.

While making your own curry paste is an interesting and rewarding experience, opening a jar of Thai curry paste is by far the easiest solution for a weeknight dinner. It’s available in the Asian section of supermarkets and online.

The sauce of this curry is fairly thin. If you want a thicker sauce, stir a couple of teaspoons of cornstarch into 2 tablespoons of water and add with the coconut milk. Either way, you’ll want to serve it with plenty of rice to

In a large pot over medium high heat, melt the butter with the oil. Add the onion and garlic and sauté until tender, about 4 minutes. Add the curry paste and ginger and stir until you can smell the spices. Stir in the bell pepper, then add the broth and coconut milk and bring to a gentle simmer (do not let the mixture boil or it might separate or curdle).

Add the fish sauce or soy sauce, and the cauliflower. Simmer for 5 minutes, until the cauliflower starts to become tender. Add the pork and the chickpeas and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 7 to 10 minutes, until the pork is cooked and the cauliflower is tender.

Stir in the basil and lime juice and serve over the hot rice, with the lime wedges on the side to squeeze over.

A 2015 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) looked at 14 different clinical trials of marijuana use by multiple sclerosis patients and found relief from chronic pain, nerve pain and muscle spasm. Another study published in 2015 in JAMA looked at 28 different studies with 2,454 patients and found a 30 percent reduction of pain with cannabis-related products compared with placebo.

Opiates can relieve pain in the short term, such as after surgery or an acute injury.

But due to their addictive potential and lack of long-term benefit, opiates are not a good choice for long-term pain relief.

Marijuana is not without its own potential risks and side effects. These include short-term memory loss, poor motor coordination, paranoid thoughts and, for some, psychosis. Long-term use also can create the potential for addiction, but not to the degree of opiate medications. Also, overdosing on marijuana doesn’t lead to death, as it can with opiates.

My suggestion in regard to chronic back pain is to try other methods of pain control over opioids. These include physical therapy, yoga and stretching. If these don’t work, marijuana is an option, but beware of its side effects – and try to minimize its use.

Dear Doctor: I try not to use opioids for my chronic back pain, but I’m finding myself turning to them more often. Could marijuana help?

Dear Reader: Pain is one of most difficult aspects of medicine to understand. No one actually can feel the pain of another person, but we can see the suffering it causes. As doctors, we try to alleviate pain in a number of ways.

Opiates – starting with opium, which is derived from the poppy plant – have been used for pain relief for more than 3,000 years.

The opiates morphine and codeine, also from the poppy plant, were isolated and made available in the early 1800s. Since that time, multiple synthetic opiates such as hydrocodone and oxycodone have been widely used for pain. These drugs attach to opiate receptors in both the brain and spinal cord.

One problem with opiates is they relieve pain in the short term, but will not control it in the long term. Thus to relieve chronic pain, a person perpetually has to use the medication – creating one of the addictive aspects of the drugs. The other problem with opiates is people become tolerant of the medications, meaning with consistent use, a person needs more medication to relieve the same amount of pain.

For these reasons, opium and its progeny have been abused worldwide. The United States is facing an epidemic of opiate abuse, with prescription opiate medication leading to a rapid increase in lethal drug overdoses.

In 2014, more than 18,000 people died from overdosing on prescription opiates, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Marijuana also has been used for more than 3,000 years. It works through the endocannabinoid system of the body, which has receptors in the brain and spinal cord as well as the immune system. The receptors in the brain and spinal cord can decrease muscle

So far this week, we have looked at similar deals in three no-trump.

In one case, declarer had to choose between line A and line B; in another, he could try line A and, if it failed, fall back on line B. Today’s deal is a third variation. Against three notrump, West leads the club ace, under which East signals enthusiastically with the 10. West continues with the club four (in case his partner has only queen-third of clubs). East wins with the queen, returns the club three and takes the fourth trick with his club eight. (South discards the spade four and a high diamond.) Then East shifts to a spade. What should South do?

South showed a balanced hand with a good 22-24 points. North tried for the lucrative vulnerable game bonus.

How should South play? The spade finesse is 50-50, and a 3-3 heart split is only a 35.53 percent shot.

But there is a third, more complicated, line C. If a defender has four hearts and the spade king, he can be squeezed -- that dreaded word!

Declarer can win trick five with his spade ace and run the diamonds, pitching his spade queen. Dummy retains the spade jack and three hearts; South has four hearts. Here, West cannot keep both the spade king and four hearts. He is squeezed.

Note that South does not need to count anything -- he looks only for the spade king. If that card has not appeared by trick 10, declarer hopes to run the hearts.
