DeKalb mayoral candidates READER POLL to participate in public forum DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The Kiwanis Club of DeKalb will host a public forum for the four mayoral candidates for the city of DeKalb on Feb. 6 at the DeKalb Elks Lodge, 209 S. Annie Glidden Road.

The forum is designed to encourage the public to become acquainted with each candidate and discover their vision for DeKalb as well as their qualifications for office, a Kiwanis Club news release said.

The four candidates in April’s election are

incumbent Mayor John Rey, community leader Jerry Smith, local businessman Michael Embrey and DeKalb County Board member Misty Haji-Sheikh.

Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. Each candidate will give a five- to 10-minute presentation, followed by a public question-and-answer segment. Forms will be available to submit questions, but participants must bring their own pens and pencils.

From 7 to 7:45 p.m. there will be an informal public roundtable discussion with the candidates.

DeKalb judge sought for Kendall County circuit clerk’s battery case

tscott@shawmedia.com A Kendall County judge is asking a DeKalb County judge to hear the battery case of Kendall County Circuit Court Clerk Robyn Ingemunson.

Ingemunson is accused of misdemeanor battery against one of her deputy clerks at a Yorkville bar in December.

Kendall County Judge Timothy J. McCann sent a letter Jan. 12 to 23rd Circuit Court Chief Judge Robbin J. Stuckert asking that the case be heard by a judge from outside of Kendall County. The 23rd Circuit consists of Kendall and DeKalb counties.

“It is my opinion, as presiding judge of Kendall County, that this matter should not be heard by any judge currently sitting in Kendall County,” McCann wrote. “I am asking that you exercise your authority to assign a judge to hear this matter.”

According to a Yorkville Police Department news release, Ingemunson, 49, of the 2300 block of Iroquois Lane, Yorkville, was charged after a Dec. 21 incident that occurred at a bar in the

600 block of West Veterans Parkway, where she made “physical contact with the victim.” However, the release states that the victim was not injured in the incident.

A complaint filed with the Robyn Circuit Clerk’s Office on Dec. 27 Ingemunson states that Ingemunson “knowingly made physical contact with [the alleged victim] in that she placed her hand on her head and pushed her head.” The alleged victim is an employee of the Circuit Clerk’s Office, according to court records.

Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis filed charges Jan. 9 against Ingemunson for misdemeanor battery.

Weis explained that if a new judge is assigned, the case would still be physically heard at the courthouse in Kendall County but that the judge would be from DeKalb County.

A court hearing and plea setting for Ingemunson has been scheduled for 8:30 a.m.

Opportunity House seeks donations for consolidation project

SYCAMORE – Opportunity House is moving its operation to a second facility in an effort to save on operational costs and improve its programs for local adults with disabilities.

The second facility at 357 N. California St., about a block away from the main building at 202 Lucas St., was purchased in 2007 for about $1.6 million, said Tom Matya, chairman of the nonprofit’s board of directors.

Matya said the board has launched a fundraising campaign to help with the costs of expanding the second building.

“We would have loved to [consolidate] in 2007, but there was a limit to our fundraising capacity,” he said.

“The board this past May made the decision. We thought the time was right, and that’s when we started the construction project and capital campaign simultaneously.”

Opportunity House is a nonprofit organization that has provided services to adults with disabilities in the community since it was founded more than 50 years ago. The charity’s services include work programs, developmental training, independent living support and residential care at 10 area group homes.

Transferring all operations into one building will give clients more options in their programs and activities, Matya said.

Opportunity House occupies 21,000 square feet of the second facility in addition to its 25,000-square-foot main facility.

Matya said the main building will be sold after everything is moved into the remaining 32,000 square feet of the California Street building. Construction is expected to be complete in midApril, with the move slated for the end of May. Matya said $1.2 million in donations and pledges have been raised, with a goal to reach $1.8 million by July 1.

He said a donor has pledged a 50-cent match for the next $400,000 raised, which would bring the total to $1.8 million. Donations can be paid in installments over a multiyear period, he said.

“There just could be so much more efficiency with the consolidation, and not only efficiency of resources, but also how we run our programs,” he said.

Although 70 percent of Opportunity House funding comes from the state, the organization has not seen an increase in state funding in about 10 years, he said. Other funding sources include the DeKalb County Community Mental Health Board, United Way and private donations.

“We do have reserves, but with the unreliability of the state budget, we’re not going to use any of our reserves,” Matya said. “That’s why we’re dedicated to a major capital campaign.”

Executive Director Bob Shipman said Opportunity House’s day program is divided among the two build-

ings; work skills are taught in the Lucas Street building, while daily living skills are taught in the California Street facility.

Shipman said the consolidation will be helpful for clients who benefit from both components of the day program, especially those with mobility issues.

“Getting back and forth has always been a challenge,” he said. “It’s a block away, but it could be 10 miles by the time you get the staff and the transportation, so consolidating is going to help integrate the program and really give people the opportunity to have more choices in the day.”

Shipman said about 110 people attend the day program each day, with 70 in the main facility and 40 in the second facility. Last year, Opportunity House served 220 adults with disabilities in some capacity, he said.

The part of the building still under construction will include a production area for the work component, a gymnasium, a lunch room, conference rooms and office space for staff.

Clients in the day program work to provide packaging for local compa-

nies such as Ideal Industries, and the new production area will feature work benches, shrink wrap tunnels and storage space, Matya said.

It also will have higher ceilings and more open space, he said.

The occupied part of the building includes classrooms, a dining room, an arts and crafts room, an exercise room and a conference room.

The new classrooms already have proved useful for educational programs.

Shipman said Sycamore School District 427 partnered with Opportunity House to start a program for 18- to 22-year-old students who would otherwise remain in the public school system with high school-aged students.

“It really helps the schools, and it helps us because we can do strategic planning to know what kind of staffing and facilities we will need in the future,” he said.

Kishwaukee College also partners with Opportunity House with the Learning for Life program for adults to continue their education and receive achievement certificates, Shipman said.

New direction sought for sober house project

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Tensions over an unfinished and over-budget plan to open a sober living home in Sycamore remained high Monday as county and judicial officials discussed how to salvage the project.

At a meeting of the DeKalb County Board’s Law and Justice Committee, it was clear that no one was pleased with the state of the planned sober living home for men.

The county bought the home at 491 E. State St. in Sycamore for $145,000 in May 2015, but it remains uninhabitable nearly two years later. One committee member called a recent visit to the home “scary.”

Judicial leaders, including Special Court Administrator/Drug Court Coordinator Michael Douglas and DeKalb County Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert, said private donors weren’t willing to put anymore money into the project as costs kept increasing. Douglas blamed County Administrator Gary Hanson for the rising cost of estimates of what it would take to finish the home, which he said came without explanation. He further said that if he’d been in control of the project from the beginning, the house would be finished and occupied rather than unfinished and vacant.

When the project went over-budget in June, the Drug Court asked the County Board to put up another $75,000 toward finishing the project. The county pledged the funding, but attached some strings, including oversight from Hanson.

In response to Douglas’ comments, Hanson put it bluntly: “You could not do this project for what you said you could.”

Hanson said that the only way for Douglas to have completed the project as planned would have been to do it illegally. Douglas didn’t back down, but County Board Chairman Mark Pietrowski Jr. redirected the conversation.

Pietrowski, who also sits on the Law and Justice Committee, said one potential solution was to turn it over to KishHealth System Behavioral Health Services at Ben Gordon Center. Stuckert said she had some concerns about that plan and said that the program should be run by the court. However, she agreed with committee members that they should continue to investigate that possibility.

The sober living program was to be run by the court. However, both furnaces failed last winter. Because the home was empty, those failures led water pipes inside to freeze, then burst, causing extensive water damage. While looking into how much those repairs would cost, other problems, including the lead-based water main, were discovered.

In December, Hanson suspended further remodeling work on the project and said it would take a miracle to finish it.

The mood at Monday’s meeting was more optimistic. Pietrowski said the Ben Gordon Center could be a potential partner.

“To have a known entity run that facility would give it stability and could get it off the ground,” Pietrowski said.

He said the county could draft an agreement for Ben Gordon to take over the project, cover the cost of completing it and run the program. The agreement would contain a provision that if Ben Gordon ever decided to discontinue the program at some point, ownership of the house would revert to the

Fitness center proposal hearings set 2 meetings on Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital scheduled for same day

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – State and county officials said they were unaware that two public hearings on Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital’s plan to build a $46.4 million fitness center are scheduled 90 minutes apart on the same day in different places.

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board has set a public hearing on the Health and Fitness Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 9 in the DeKalb Public Library’s Bilder Family Meeting Room at 309 Oak St. The state review board regulates the construction of health facilities.

The DeKalb County Planning Zoning and Building Department has set a public hearing for 1 p.m. the same day in the DeKalb County Administration Building’s East Conference Room, 110 E. Sycamore St., Sycamore, to consider a variance requested by the hospital. Public sign-in starts at 11:15 a.m.

The hospital plans to build a two-story, 111,105-square-foot health and fitness center at 626 E. Bethany Road on the hospital campus, which is outside the DeKalb city limits. The proposed building is more than five times the maximum building size of 20,000 square feet allowed in DeKalb County’s Business Conservation District.

A county public hearing officer would need to grant a “development limitation” variance to allow for the larger building, DeKalb County Planning Director Derek Hiland said.

It is up to the hearing officer to determine whether the variance is granted. Any appeal of the officer’s decision would be done through the courts, Hiland said.

Hiland said Monday that he wasn’t aware of the review board’s scheduled hearing on the same day at almost the same time.

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board also must ap-

prove the project, but its approval is unrelated to the county’s variance.

The review board’s hearing is conducted by its staff according to state law. The hearing is open to the public and gives anyone the opportunity to present written and/or verbal comment relevant to the project.

“All allegations or assertions should be relevant to the need for the proposed project and be supported with two copies of documentation or materials that are printed or typed on paper, size 8½ by 11 inches,” according to the hearing rules.

What happens at the review board’s hearing will be incorporated into a report that is considered, along with a staff report, by the board when it votes on the proposal. The review board is tentatively scheduled to consider Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital’s plans at its March 14 meeting.

The public hearing is a chance for the community to provide feedback on

a plan, said Courtney Avery, administrator for the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board. She was unaware of the county’s planned public hearing on the same day.

Barry Schrader, a representative of DeKalb County Citizens for Better Mental Health, requested the review board public hearing earlier this month. In a letter, Schrader said the group had concerns about the Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Health and Fitness Center’s “impact on surrounding businesses.” The hospital’s fitness center is slated to be built adjacent to the Kishwaukee Family YMCA. The YMCA’s CEO has said the hospital’s plans won’t detract from the Y’s mission.

The same advocacy group questioned Northwestern Medicine’s acquisition of KishHealth in 2015 and had previously opposed KishHealth’s decision to close its six-bed acute mental illness unit in 2009.

She is survived by one son, Jim Merchant of Sycamore; one daughter, Jean (Wade)

Eldridge of Nickerson, Kansas; two sisters, Dorothy Bartels of Sycamore, Betty Fritsch of Winchester, Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hasley J. “Hayes” Merchant; and her brothers, Howard and Lester Malone.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 27, 2017 at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb. Burial will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb. Visitation

DeKALB – Findings from a feasibility study recommending the conversion of the historic Egyptian Theatre of downtown DeKalb into a city-owned performing arts center were presented to the City Council during its Monday meeting.

The study was conducted by Toronto-based Janis A. Barlow and Associates consulting firm. Barlow and spokeswoman Dulcie Gilmore were in attendance to present their recommendations.

“We think the theater is capable of sustaining a much broader range of programs and attracting a much larger audience than it recently has, but to fulfill its potential, we think change is required,” Barlow said.

In order to achieve optimal standards for a performing arts center, it was projected that the theater would require an additional 2,500 square feet in backstage support, an additional 2,000 square feet of stage, more than 11,000 square feet of additional front house space, more than 2,000 square feet in auditorium space and a 2,000-square-foot administrative area.

With these changes and collaboration with Northern Illinois Universi-

ty for certain occasions, the theater is projected to host anywhere from 169 to 235 events, which could generate a potential $2 million annual operating budget. The theater’s current budget is about $300,000.

Gilmore said that the theater could quadruple its annual attendance with the necessary changes.

“I think there’s a wonderful opportunity for [the Egyptian Theatre] to be a wonderful, vibrant regional performing arts center,” Gilmore said. “Right now, the programming is severely restricted by the physical nature of the building, which is like trying to operate it with one arm tied behind your back.”

The city currently spends $100,000 in tax increment financing each year for capital expenses to the theater, but this funding is set to expire in 2021, according to the study’s findings.

Under city ownership, the city would pay $250,000 annually toward the theater’s operating budget.

First Ward Alderman Dave Jacobson and 2nd Ward Alderman Bill Finucane said the council shouldn’t rush a decision on the theater until it is determined that it would be feasible to provide the extra funding.

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The DeKalb/Sycamore Bookcase Project will host a banquet to support the annual effort to promote literacy by providing 50 solid oak bookcases with starter libraries to children enrolled at the Two Rivers Head Start program.

The banquet will be at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 in the DeKalb High School cafeteria at 501 W. Dresser Road.

Attendees will receive a copy of “Learning, Earning and Giving Back: A Guide to a Happy and Successful Life” by A Bookcase for Every Child founder Jim Davidson, while supplies last. Entertainment at the banquet will be provided by a DeKalb High School musical group, according to a news release from the nonprofit organization, which is now in its sixth year.

Tickets cost $18 each or $140 for a table for eight. They can be purchased in advance or reserved and paid for at the door.

The DeKalb/Sycamore Bookcase Project was is modeled after “A Bookcase for Every Child,” which was founded in 2005 by columnist Jim Davidson in Conway, Arkansas.

The group also is looking for volunteers to help build the bookcases. Experience is helpful for the skill-dependent tasks.

DeKALB – Two people who falsely told police they were robbed at gunpoint Friday near Northern Illinois University’s East Lagoon could face criminal charges.

Two people walking through the East Lagoon area of campus about 5 p.m. Friday told police that they were approached by four men dressed in black and wearing ski masks. They also told police that one of the men flashed a handgun.

In response to the reported incident, NIU police issued a campus safety bulletin warning the community about the reported crime.

It wasn’t clear from the bulletin, what, if anything, was reported stolen in the made-up crime.

However, NIU police determined it was a false report. A spokesman for the college said charges could filed Monday against the two people, but he didn’t name either individual.

Pritchard plans forum in DeKalb to discuss state’s issues DeKALB – State Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, will host a town hall discussion Saturday at the Lincoln Inn restaurant in downtown DeKalb to help share

opinions and propose solutions for state issues during the 100th General Assembly’s spring session.

The state has, once again, begun the calendar year without a budget agreement, leaving social service programs and higher education without state support. Pritchard said in a news release that residents need to believe that they can share their views on state issues in an open environment.

“In the weeks ahead, the Legislature will be making a number of difficult decisions about funding for public services, regulations and ways to restart the Illinois economy,” Pritchard said in the release.

“I value your opinions and want to help increase understanding about the options and consequences.”

Pritchard, whose 70th Statehouse District will hold additional meetings in the spring across his district, which includes parts of DeKalb, Kane and Boone counties, including Genoa, Sycamore and most of DeKalb.

Bruce Rauner’s administration has sent a letter to GOP congressional leaders asking them to avoid “hasty” or “incomplete” action as they proceed with a planned repeal of the Affordable Care Act. The Jan. 17 letter said Congress and the states “must work together” to achieve “important reforms” in health care policy. The letter is signed by Acting Illinois Insurance Director Jennifer Hammer, who was appointed by the Republican governor one month ago.

The letter comes as Republican lawmakers face pressure from President Donald Trump to quickly repeal and replace the health law and as Republicans continue searching for a proposal on which they can agree.

Authorities: 2 men survive fall through ice after fishing

ANTIOCH – Authorities said two men have survived a fall through the ice at a lake in northern Illinois.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said the men were leaving the ice after fishing Sunday on Channel Lake when they went through the ice about 100 yards from shore.

Authorities said one man pulled himself out of the water and the other man was rescued by members of the Antioch Fire Department after being in the water for about 30 minutes. They were taken to hospitals with what were described as

Police dog wounded in shooting is back home

GARY, Ind. – A police dog wounded last week by gunfire after a Gary traffic stop is back with his handler following two surgeries.

Lake County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Mark Back said the 6-yearold Dutch shepherd, named Blade, was released over the weekend from the Purdue University Veterinary Hospital in West Lafayette.

Blade underwent two surgeries for a gunshot wound to his head and mouth and is now back home with the Lake County sheriff’s officer who’s his handler.

That officer stopped a vehicle Jan. 18 in Gary, but the driver and passenger fled on foot.

Police said the officer and Blade pursued the passenger, 18-year-old Marquis Thomas, who wounded Blade when he opening fire during the pursuit.

The officer returned fire, wounding Thomas. He died Thursday at a Chicago hospital.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Charting a new American course abroad, President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the sweeping Trans-Pacific Partnership on Monday, using one of his first actions in office to reject a centerpiece of Barack Obama’s attempts to counter China and deepen U.S. ties in Asia.

Trump’s move on trade aimed to fulfill a central campaign promise even as he appeared to be fixated on re-litigating the 2016 election.

In a meeting with congressional leaders on Monday night, Trump claimed that 3 million to 5 million immigrants living in the U.S. illegally voted in the election, costing him the popular vote, said a Democratic aide familiar with the exchange who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private meeting. There has been no evidence to back up that claim.

Trump’s assertions came in a White House meeting with Democratic and Republican congressional leaders.

They were similar to claims he made on Twitter in late November that he had won the electoral college in a “landslide” and “won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally.”

Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by nearly 2.9 million votes despite losing the electoral college.

Trump aimed to make jobs and the economy the focal point of his first few days in office. He has repeatedly cast the 12-nation trade pact – which was eagerly sought by U.S. allies in Asia – as detrimental to American businesses.

“Great thing for the American worker that we just did,” Trump said in brief remarks as he signed a notice in the Oval Office.

The actions were among the long list of steps candidate Trump pledged to take on his opening day as president. But other “Day One” promises were going unfulfilled Monday, including plans to propose a constitutional amendment imposing term limits on members of Congress and terminating Obama’s executive actions deferring deportations for some people living in the U.S. illegally.

Spokesman Sean Spicer said Monday that Trump intended to follow through on his proposals, though on a more extended timeframe to ensure maximum attention for each move.

up after a possible tornado destroyed about half the homes at the Sunshine Acres mobile home park.

Perry said her niece, 41-year-old Lawansa Perry, and the niece’s brother both lived there, and she drove out to try to help them after hearing the park had been hit.

“We were looking, looking,” Perry said, “but couldn’t find them.”

The coroner later confirmed seven people were found dead at Sunshine Acres. Authorities said the victims included the niece and her brother.

“They died in the storm trying to save her grandchildren,” she said, adding the children survived. “I know they’ve gone on to Jesus.”

At Sunshine Acres on Monday, crews with cadaver dogs checked the wreckage a second day for anyone dead or alive. But the dogs found nothing, and authorities said owners would finally be allowed back Tuesday on those destroyed and damaged lots deemed safe.

ALBANY, Ga. – A tornado warning on television sent Anthony Mitchell, his pregnant wife and their three children scrambling for what little shelter their mobile home could provide. They crouched in a hallway as the twister started taking their home apart piece by piece.

“The windows exploded, the doors flew off the hinges, the sheetrock started to rip off the walls and fly out the windows,” Mitchell said. “The trailer started to lift up. And about that time a tree fell on the trailer, and I think that’s what held the trailer in place from flying away.”

An unusual midwinter barrage of tornadoes and thunderstorms over the weekend was blamed for at least 20 deaths across the Deep South. Among them were three people killed at Big Pine Estates, the mobile home park in Albany where the Williams family lives.

A twister slammed into the southwestern Georgia city of 76,000 people on Sunday afternoon, carving a path of destruction a half-mile wide in places and leaving the landscape strewn with broken trees and mangled sheet metal. Few of the roughly 200 homes at the trailer park escaped damage from the tornado, which was rated by forecasters as at least an EF2, meaning it packed winds of 111 to 135 mph.

In addition to the three dead at Big Pine Estates, a fourth body was discovered at a home just outside the trailer park.

Mitchell lost his home and marveled that he didn’t lose his life, too.

“Something helped us walk out the front door of the house,” he said.

“There’s some people who weren’t fortunate enough to have a front door to walk out of.”

SYCAMORE – Real estate broker Melissa Mobile has started her own realty group in Sycamore after 10 years in the business of selling homes.

The Melissa Mobile Team, which also includes broker Rhiannon Foster and assistant Mary Hess, operates the Hometown Realty Group out of an office at 330 W. Elm St. Mobile said she opened the new office in December, and starting her own company has been her dream since she began working in the industry.

“Something hit me when I reached my 10-year anniversary in August,” she said. “I realized that if I don’t do it now, it might never happen. It was like eloping.”

Mobile said she was nervous that she might lose clients, but the transition has not affected business. She said people seem to respect her decision to take the risk.

“I would ask clients if they would still hire me if I worked for a different company, and they would say, ‘We hire you for you,’” Mobile said.

DCEDC’s 30th anniversary

With the incorporation of DCEDC on Jan. 15, 1987, DeKalb County’s public-private economic development partnership begins its 30th year of operation. As the year progresses, DCEDC will commemorate significant development milestones and accomplishments throughout the county.

Withdrawal from TPP hurts Illinois farmers

On Monday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a 12-nation trade agreement that took years to negotiate.

The TPP includes Canada, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Vietnam, Chile, Brunei, Singapore and New Zealand.

Countries including Colombia, Indonesia, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand and Taiwan have expressed interest in joining the agreement.

“Great thing for the American worker that we just did,” The Associated Press quoted Trump as saying as he signed a notice in the Oval Office.

Many people celebrated the U.S. withdrawal of the trade pact.

But its demise probably will not be cheered by many farmers.

In fact, farm bureaus from coast to coast, including in Illinois, had supported the TPP. Illinois is among the top three agricultural exporting states.

In 2014, Illinois farmers sent $1.4 billion in soybeans and soy products overseas, another $1 billion in feeds and fodder, and $1.5 billion worth of pork, beef, dairy, wheat and processed foods.

In fact, 46 percent of Illinois exports go to TPP countries, including 55 percent of Illinois goods.

The United States already has free trade agreements in place with five of the countries that were part of the TPP. The remaining nations clearly are willing to negotiate trade deals.

Trump came to office promising to negotiate better deals for America and its workers. We know of no harder workers than America’s farmers.

Fair agreements on free trade can provide economic benefits to people around the world. They also reduce the chance of war between nations.

Trump administration officials said the TPP was the wrong framework, in part because it put small-market countries on equal footing with an economic giant such as the United States.

However, American farmers did stand to reap significant benefits. We urge the president to seek alternative means of encouraging trade and opening markets to agricultural and other exports from Illinois and the rest of the country.

Peaceful marches a healthy antidote to violent protests Peaceful women’s marches and rallies in Washington and across America Saturday were a healthy antidote to protests that turned ugly and violent Friday night.

Millions, a majority women though many men as well, protested worldwide citing a variety of reasons.

Many women feared a Trump administration will mean rollbacks of reproductive rights, others objected to his crude comments in which he bragged about sexually assaulting women.

Others simply wanted to make their voices heard, to let it be known they oppose many of the things President Donald Trump has said during the campaign or the policies he plans to enact.

It seems unlikely such protests will soon become a thing of the past as President Trump’s inaugural address did little to alleviate critics concerns that he will

be a divisive figure.

His 16-minute address Friday was similar in tone to his stump speeches, making it clear he is unwilling to move beyond campaign mode.

That style undeniably won him the White House and resonates with his many supporters. Whether it will inspire an entire nation, create any sense of unity and lead to effective government remains to be seen.

What many were desperate to hear was a vision for what a “great again” America actually will look like, and Trump provided few specific answers about that vision.

Nevertheless, Trump certainly has earned the votes and right to be who he is – but he must understand it also earned him the considerable backlash on display Saturday.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Barack Obama were each succeeded by a president of the other party.

Parties opposing the president had majorities in the House of Representatives for 14 years and in the Senate for 11½ years of the 24-year period.

And the presidents were re-elected with only 49.2, 50.7 and 51.1 percent of the vote, respectively.

Clinton was impeached in his second term.

Bush was administered an electoral “thumping” in the midterm election during his second term, and Obama received similar treatment in 2010 and 2014.

Although Clinton and Bush refrained from blaming their problems on their predecessors, Obama stopped doing so only as his second term was nearing its end.

But there are similarities to the pair of three consecutive eight-year presidencies, as well.

The so-called Era of Good Feelings came after a war as divisive and inconclusive as the Iraq War. The War of 1812 inspired threats of secession

by New Englanders and is celebrated

by Canadians as a victory. Americans took solace only from the treaty negotiated by John Quincy Adams and the victory won in New Orleans by Andrew Jackson after the treaty was signed but before the news crossed

the ocean.

Congress was also deeply split back then.

It was over the issue of slavery in the territories.

So there was a compromise in 1820 whereby Missouri was admitted into the union as a slave state and Maine, detached from Massachusetts, was admitted as a free state. The dispute was “like a fire bell in the night,” wrote Thomas Jefferson, “the knell of the Union.” He continued, “It is hushed indeed for the moment, but this is a reprieve only, not a final sentence.”

It would ring again, more loudly, four decades later.

And the inauguration 192 years ago also evoked cries of illegitimacy, perhaps even more so than this year’s.

There were four major candidates, each claiming the mantle of Jefferson’s party. Jackson had won a plurality of popular votes (although legislatures chose electors in six states) and a plurality in the Electoral College, but Adams had been a close second, while third-place finisher William Crawford had been crippled by a stroke.

The House of Representatives, where Henry Clay was the longtime speaker, spurned Jackson and chose Adams, who promptly named Clay secretary of state although Clay had opposed Adams’ policies when he held that office.

“A corrupt bargain!” shouted Jackson backers – not without cause – just as Trump’s opponents keep re-

Jackson’s supporters kept up the clamor and elected him unambiguously four years later; Adams, as his father had when Jefferson beat him 28 years before, skipped the inauguration.

From their conflict sprang the Democratic and the Whig – and eventually the Republican – parties.

In 1824, Jackson was regarded as a wild man – impetuous and unfit for the presidency – by Jefferson, Madison and Monroe.

Each surely preferred the scholarly, internationally experienced Adams.

And today, all of Trump’s three eight-year predecessors take a similar view of him, although all three accepted invitations to his inauguration.

But many other presidents – Abraham Lincoln and both Roosevelts, plus some duds – didn’t have support from living predecessors, either.

Donald Trump is not quite so unprecedented as many of those unversed in history think.

The United States has only had three consecutive eight-year presidencies, and it’s only the second time in history that that’s happened. The only other such moment came March 4, 1825, 192 years ago.

That’s a bit surprising, given the strong example George Washington’s two terms as president set and the rule established by the 22nd Amendment, adopted after Franklin Roosevelt won third and fourth terms in wartime, imposing a two-term limit. It owes something to the tragic happenstance that the four presidents who were assassinated might well have completed two terms otherwise.

There are some striking contrasts between the 24 years that ended in 1825 and the 24 years ending with the inauguration of Donald Trump.

The three eight-year presidents then – Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe – were Virginians who were, despite some tussles, political allies and members of the same political party.

Their houses were just a day’s ride then (an hour’s drive today) from one another.

The last years of Monroe’s administration were dubbed by historians as the Era of Good Feelings.

The opposition Federalist Party didn’t run a candidate in the 1820 election and held only a handful of seats in Congress.

No one would call any large part of the past 24 years an era of good feelings.

jseverson@shawmedia.com The Northern Illinois men’s basketball team has a 3-point shooting problem.

Balanced scoring and a strong defense has helped the Huskies earn a share of the lead in the Mid-American Conference West standings with Eastern Michigan, but they have been woeful behind the 3-point arc this season – something coach Mark Montgomery acknowledges.

“We’re not a good 3-point shooting team,” Montgomery said. “As you see, other teams, they are crowding the paint, they’re digging down ... and they’re giving us that shot. Until we have someone to knock it down consistently, it’s going to be these kind of games.”

In the six conference games so far, the Huskies (12-7, 4-2 MAC West) are shooting a dreadful 25 percent from 3-point range, and are hitting 29 percent from deep on the season – both of which rank last in the MAC. In a 78-69 loss to Ohio on Saturday, the Huskies went 4 for 12 (33 percent) from 3-point range, which was the first time in six games they have connected on more than 30 percent of their deep shots. However, one of the makes against the Bobcats came from sophomore Jaylen Key hitting a meaningless wide-open shot with four seconds remaining.

“We already know coming in, you look at the stats, we’re the lowest making (3-point shooting) team in the conference,” Montgomery said after the game. “We average four. We made four today.”

Individually, only Key (5 for 11, 45.5 percent), sophomore guard Laytwan Porter (18 for 42, 42.9 percent) and senior Dontel Highsmith (15 for 47, 31.9 percent) are hitting more than 29 percent of their 3-point attempts. However, even Porter has struggled in MAC play, making only 2 of 13 in the past six games.

There also has been regression from players who had success beyond the arc last season.

MOBILE, Ala. – Bears general manager Ryan Pace’s plans for the Senior Bowl include a promise. He never wants his team to coach it again.

“We are never going to be in this position again,” Pace said last month.

“But we better take advantage of it while we’re here.”

Members of the Bears’ front office and the coaching, scouting and training staffs descended on Mobile on Sunday night. More team employees arrived Monday.

With all hands on deck for the Bears, here are five factors to keep in mind during the week of the Senior Bowl:

MEET NATE PETERMAN

He’s the best quarterback in this year’s Senior Bowl, and the Bears are coaching him on the North team.

Draft pundits have pegged Peterman, a two-year starter at Pittsburgh, as a mid-round pick. Scouts view his physical skills and intangibles favorably, even though he might be behind Deshaun Watson (Clemson), Mitch Trubisky (North Carolina) and DeShone Kizer (Notre Dame) and others.

In his final college season, Peterman completed 60.5 percent of his passes for 2,855 yards, 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Peterman’s crowning achievement was throwing for 308 yards and five touchdowns (no interceptions) in a 43-42 win against eventual-national champion Clemson and Watson.

Recently, ESPN analyst Louis Riddick, a former candidate for the 49ers’ GM opening, praised Peterman on Twitter, saying there are many things to like about him, specifically mentioning his “great character/makeup.”

Senior Bowl executive director Phil Savage, the former Browns GM and executive for the Ravens and Eagles, said Peterman is in the “best position” to impress.

“He’s got timing in his feet and his arm,” Savage said Monday. “He’s got a good head on his shoulders in terms of anticipation and timing. He was one of the senior quarterbacks out there that probably had the most buzz even though it was sort of under the radar.”

When the Bears signed Josh Sitton one week before their first regular-season game, he had played 121 NFL games, all for the same team.

The guard hadn’t been the new guy, or learned a different system, since the 2008 Packers drafted him in the fourth round.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – There’s a mantra that players quickly come to learn when they play for Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots.

It’s placed in different spots in the locker room, it’s on the walls around the team facility, and the coach himself repeats it often: “Do your job.”

Perhaps no other unit for the Patriots has embodied Belichick’s go-to phrase more than his defense this season.

And if New England hopes to capture its fifth Super Bowl, no other group will be relied on more as the Patriots face an Atlanta Falcons offense that has scored a combined 80 points through two playoff games.

Defensive back Duron Harmon, who had a huge touchdown-saving tackle in the second quarter of the Patriots’ 36-17 AFC Championship Game win over Pittsburgh on Sunday, said that even in their tightknit world, they couldn’t help but notice the criticism that surrounded the defense earlier this season.

“Oh yeah, definitely. We try not to focus too much on the media, but we hear it, it’s everywhere,” Harmon said.

It was in training camp that the Patriots first began to be dogged by questions about what their identity would be on defense after the trade of edge rusher Chandler Jones.

A slow start in struggling to create a pass rush without him during the first month of the regular season also did little to quiet critics.

That was followed by the surprise midseason trade of linebacker Jamie Collins, and a three-week stretch in which the defense failed to force a single turnover.

That turned early compliments for new additions such as Chris Long and Eric Rowe into pressure on the shoulders of New England veteran linebacker Dont’a Hightower and a secondary led by Devin McCourty and Logan Ryan to increase their production.

They responded by having the stingiest scoring defense in the NFL over the final three weeks of the regular season, and entered the playoffs giving up a league-low 15.6 points a game.

They have maintained that status in the playoffs, allowing only 16.5 points a game.

Turnovers also have been up since that midseason lull.

Including the two playoff games, the Patriots’ defense has come up with 19 turnovers in the past eight games. The defense has had multiple turnovers in seven of those games during that stretch.

Belichick said the formula simply has been his players buying into the program they always have tried to foster. But he said getting to face playoff-bound teams late in the season was a boost, as well.

“It doesn’t happen overnight.

There’s no switch that you can flip,” Belichick said. “It comes through a lot of hard work, a lot of meetings, a lot of communication on how we’re going to do things, and then a lot of on-the-field execution at actually doing them at a good competitive level so that we can gain confidence in each other as a unit as to how that’s going to happen in a live game situation.”

Cornerback Malcolm Butler said the results down the stretch haven’t been a surprise to a now-unified group of veterans and newcomers that has come to appreciate the methodical approach that Belichick preaches daily.

“Just keep working, man. That’s all you can do is work no matter what anybody says,” he said. “Just keep working and keep your head down, and things will happen like it happened this season.”

He also said success wouldn’t affect their approach to the next two weeks.

“The job’s not done,” Butler said.

“I’m going to enjoy it, and we’ve got to get back to work soon.”

Atlanta endured plenty of distractions in the buildup to that game, from coach Dan Reeves reliving an ugly breakup with the Broncos to a dispute over the how the players departed their chartered jet in Miami to, most notably, team leader Eugene Robinson being arrested the night before the game for attempting to solicit a prostitute.

The Patriots know a thing or two about championships. They are the first team to reach the Super Bowl nine times, and the coach-quarterback tandem of Belichick and Brady will be going for its fifth Lombardi Trophy.

Quite a contrast with the Falcons, who never have won an NFL title in their 51-year history. It’s been 18 years since their initial Super Bowl appearance, when a team known as the “Dirty Birds” was beaten handily by the Denver Broncos in John Elway’s final game.

A bigger concern might be the huge gap in Super Bowl experience.

Outside of 36-year-old defensive end Dwight Freeney, who played in a pair of title games with the Indianapolis Colts, the Falcons really have no idea what they’ll face over the next two weeks.

That’s where Quinn might be of help.

He was Seattle’s defensive coordinator during back-to-back Super Bowl appearances – one a rout of the Broncos, the other a heartbreaking loss to the Patriots.

“I’ve gone when things have gone well, I’ve been a part of it when it hasn’t,” Quinn said. “I want to outline some of the keys to playing well in the game and managing some of the things on the outside. That’s a part of the pro-

cess where I can help, and I’ll share that with the guys.”

Quinn’s advice certainly will come in handy for players such as Taylor Gabriel. The speedy receiver was cut by the lowly Cleveland Browns in the preseason and now he’s got a shot at a championship, a turn of events that still seems a bit surreal.

“It hasn’t hit me yet that I’m going to the Super Bowl,” he said after the 44-21 victory over the Packers.

Gabriel, who is from the Dallas suburbs, expects to get a plethora of ticket requests from family and friends who easily can make the drive to Houston.

That’s one of those things that every player must deal with to some degree during a Super Bowl week, and some manage it better than others.

The brotherhood did its job methodically, pleasing Atlanta owner Arthur Blank so much that he was last seen dancing into the night on the victory podium.

Blank could be excused for his exuberance. The Falcons have only been this far one time VIEWS before, long Tim before their Dahlberg second-year coach won his players over with a message of unity, love and toughness that landed them in the Super Bowl.

Hard not to get a little giddy about it all.

“I say rise up, rise up brotherhood, rise up sisterhood. One more game to go,” Blank said. “See you in Houston.”

The problem for Blank and the Falcons is that the New England Patriots are who they will see in Houston. Yes, the Patriots once again, for the seventh time in the past 16 years, because it really doesn’t seem like a Super Bowl without them.

They have a coach who likely will go down as the greatest ever. Same with a quarterback who has four Super Bowl rings and knows a little something about being methodical himself.

Oh, and you might have heard about their vendetta. They don’t like to talk about it, but it has got something to do with deflated footballs, suspensions and a commissioner who wouldn’t let them defend themselves.

Brotherhood can only get you so far.

“We’ll see if we can write the perfect ending in a couple weeks,” Tom Brady said.

Hitting, pitching sapped by jet lag Researchers say they have documented drag on players

NEW YORK – Researchers say they’ve documented an unseen drag on Major League Baseball players that can wipe out home-field advantage, make pitchers give up more home runs and take some punch out of a team’s bats.

The culprit: jet lag.

Travelers are well aware of the fatigue, poor sleep and other effects that can descend like a fog when their body clocks are out of sync with their surroundings. The new work adds to previous suggestions that professional athletes are no different.

Dr. Ravi Allada of Northwestern University said he and his colleagues wanted to study the effects of body clock disruptions on human performance. So they chose baseball, a game with plenty of performance measures gathered from hundreds of games a year, played by people who get little chance to settle in to new time zones when they travel.

They looked for jet lag’s effects by analyzing 20 years’ worth of MLB data. They found 4,919 instances of a team taking the field after crossing

People generally need a day of adjustment for each time zone crossed.

Their analysis was released Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Results of the new study generally showed that traveling eastward was more disruptive than going west, a known feature of jet lag. A surprise, however, was that home teams seemed to suffer its effects more than visiting teams did.

Among the findings:

n Over all the games in the 20 years, teams won about 54 percent of games played at home, showing a home-field advantage of 4 percent. But that edge was obliterated when home teams that were jet-lagged from traveling eastward played teams with no apparent jet lag – an apparent result of seemingly small declines in performance. n After traveling eastward, jet-lagged home teams hit fewer doubles and triples, stole fewer bases and grounded into more double plays than when they weren’t affected. The impact on doubles was about one fewer per every seven games, while the other effects were smaller. n Eastward travel was linked to pitchers allowing more home runs, both at home and away. The difference came to roughly one home run every 10 games.

The researchers suggested starting pitchers might get time to overcome jet lag if they are sent a few days ahead of the team to distant away games.

Many teams send them ahead now on long flights, but it usually is only a few hours early, to avoid overnight travel.

The researchers said they had no explanation for why teams were more hampered by jet lag at home than when they played elsewhere. Maybe that reflects some protection from a more structured daily schedule on the road than at home, they suggested.

That’s a reasonable idea, said Dr. W. Chris Winter, a

Virginia sleep specialist who consults with several major league teams.

Winter, who has published research on how jet lag affects baseball teams but had no role in the new study, said the findings moved beyond simply documenting an effect on overall team performance toward learning more about it.

Ballplayers know jet lag is a problem, and recently have taken steps to ease the burden of their schedules. The Major League Baseball Players Association, concerned about fatigue, negotiated several changes in scheduling rules starting in 2018. For example, each team’s 162-game regular-season schedule will be played over 187 days, up from 183. And there will be new rules on scheduling games, taking into account the timing of consecutive games.

What difference can jet lag make? Allada pointed to the National League Championship Series in October.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitching star Clayton Kershaw shut out the Cubs when he pitched against them in the Windy City, Allada noted. But when Kershaw returned from Los Angeles to face them again, the Cubs hit him hard, including two home runs.

“I can’t attribute it all to jet lag,” Allada said, but the study suggests the eastward trip might have played a role.

It’s speculative and only one example, he said. But it’s relevant “to those of us who are Chicago Cubs fans.”

Spring training to be shortened slightly in ’18

The Associated Press NEW YORK – For everyone who thinks spring training is too long, help is on the way – a little, anyway.

Spring training will be shortened by two days starting in 2018, when new restrictions in Major League Baseball’s collective bargaining agreement take effect on game times for regular-season getaway days.

The voluntary reporting date for pitchers, catchers and injured players

will be 43 days before the major league opener instead of 45, according to a copy of the agreement obtained by The Associated Press. For other players, the date will be 38 days ahead instead of 40.

The change was tied to spreading each team’s 162 regular-season games over 187 days, up from 183.

Players’ association Assistant General Counsel Matt Nussbaum said the union’s goal was to create more days off during the season “in a way that doesn’t just chew up offseason days.”

Late arrival times ahead of regular-season series openers also were addressed.

Starting in 2018, the latest possible start time on getaway days when either team is traveling to a game in another city the next day or a home off day will be calculated by subtracting the time of the flight over 2½ hours from 7 p.m.

There are cutouts for Sunday night games broadcast by ESPN and games after June 1 at Texas’ current home ballpark – where the Rangers avoid

afternoons for much of the season because of the heat.

Another new rule for 2018 says no game in the original schedule can be set for before 5 p.m. when a team played the previous night in another city starting 7 p.m. or later. There are exceptions involving flights of 90 minutes or less for home openers and holiday weekends. Current cutouts are carried over for up to six exceptions each season at Wrigley Field and rescheduled games involving flights of 90 minutes or less.

Yet most importantly, Sunday could be the boost Toews needs to get rolling offensively.

“He wasn’t having luck on his stick,” Panik said. “The puck wasn’t going in, but it finally found it, and it was a huge night for him. Pretty happy. Hopefully, he will bounce on and go from there.”

Even after Sunday, Toews’ eight goals and 18 assists are off his usual pace. And even for someone as mental-

ly tough and strong-willed as Toews, an uptick would be welcome for a lot of reasons beyond stats.

Rookie jumps former first-round picks

jcowley@suntimes.com It appears now that Paul Zipser’s presence in the rotation isn’t about to dry up and disappear anytime soon.

That’s either an indication of the Bulls front office landing a solid pick in the second round last summer or an indictment on how flawed the make-up of this roster really is.

Bet on the latter.

According to coach Fred Hoiberg, Zipser – selected 48th overall in June – has shown more than enough to not only stick in the rotation, but has emerged as an early go-to option off the bench, even surpassing the likes of former first-round picks Denzel Valentine and Doug McDermott.

“The thing with Paul, that first

game I started him at New York (last week), the Garden, to be matched up at times with Carmelo Anthony, tells you everything you need to know,” Hoiberg said after Monday’s practice.

“He looked right in my eyes and said, ‘I gotcha, coach. I’m ready to go.’ I thought he went out and performed well, and since that point he’s given us really good minutes.”

In the wake of that loss to the Knicks, ZipsPaul Zipser er got a DNP against New Orleans, but saw quality minutes in a win in Memphis, as well as in both losses to Dallas and Atlanta.

On Saturday against Sacramento, however, Zipser was not only used as the sixth man in the rotation, but clocked in 23 minutes, scoring 13 points and grabbing four rebounds, while also staying on the floor as part of the closing unit.

“Talking about late-game situa-

tions, Paul got that one loose ball for us at the end, and we scored off of it with under a minute to go,” Hoiberg said of his rookie’s latest performance.

“Again, he’s going to give you a good effort defensively. He can move his feet, sneaky athleticism to go out there and battle and not be afraid. And again, that goes back to Paul’s career and where he played in Europe against high-level competition.”

“He has, yeah,” Hoiberg said, when asked if Zipser did enough to keep that role. “Paul, again, he plays both sides of the floor. He showed great anticipation with his feet defensively. He’s shooting the ball with a lot more confidence than he was earlier in the year.

He’s been really good for us, so yeah, he’ll stay in the rotation.”

The key in Hoiberg’s assessment has been the fact that Zipser “plays both sides of the floor.”

McDermott, and especially Nikola Mirotic, are each defensively challenged at times, and with the SunTimes reporting Sunday that Mirotic is being shopped, Zipser might make that an easier piece to part with.

What Hoiberg has to do now, however, is balance winning games with still trying to develop the youth on the bench. With Zipser jumping some former first-round picks so quickly the past week, that’s not the easiest course to maneuver.

“The thing you look for is consistency with your rotation,” Hoiberg said.

“You’ve got to play the guys that are out there performing on that particular night.

“The big thing is, obviously, to keep [their spirits] up. Denzel has had opportunities, and he’s played well. You know, Doug has had [moments]. … It’s just going to be different guys on different nights with this team, and that’s just the way it’s probably going to be.

Everybody just has to be ready.”

Jonathan Toews has accomplished pretty much everything. He’s won three Stanley Cups, a playoff MVP, a Selke Trophy for being the NHL’s top defensive forward and multiple honors playing for Canada. He’s recognized as one of hockey’s best two-way players and preeminent leaders.

Yet even somebody with that résumé can get frustrated and start to wonder about himself. That’s happened to Toews as his production has dipped this season.

“Normally, yeah, I guess it’s easy to start second-guessing everything when you’re not scoring,” Toews said. “Even a game like [Sunday], where I don’t even feel like I played that great and you’re on the ice for a handful of goals, it doesn’t really matter. It just gives you a good feeling and it’s easy to come to the rink and just kind of build off that.”

The Blackhawks are hoping that happens.

Toews had a goal and three assists in the Hawks’ 4-2 win Sunday against the Vancouver Canucks. Toews was in the right place at the right time to score the winner when Richard Panik’s shot ricocheted off the boards, leaving him with a shot at a gaping net. He and linemates Panik and Ryan Hartman showed more signs they are meshing,

and I think that’s maybe one of my issues this year, is getting my game to the level I want it to be at every single night.

“It was fun to be a part of the win (Sunday) and be a part of the offense,” he added. “Looking to try to continue that and use that confidence that comes with it.”

Toews’ teammates haven’t lost any faith in Toews. They see his numbers are down, but they’re not lacking confidence Toews will rebound.

“I mean, he’s been playing well, and we all know the level he can get to. He’s maybe not been at that level so far, but you know we never doubt him in this room,” goalie Corey Crawford said.

“He’s one of our best players, and he can turn it on.”

Of course, coach Joel Quenneville knows that, too. He recognizes how competitive Toews is and how hard he works, and sees him contributing when he’s not scoring.

He also knows Toews does want to produce points.

“We feel that he’s been coming along here. A night like [Sunday] can really help, be it confidence or having the puck in the scoring area, and whether it’s making plays or finishing your shot or being around it,” Quenneville said. “He seems like he was around the puck way more, and when he does that, usually good things happen.”

V. Williams to meet Vandeweghe in semis

The Associated Press MELBOURNE, Australia – Venus Williams has reached her 21st Grand Slam semifinal, her first at the Australian Open in 14 years.

CoCo Vandeweghe advanced to her first major semifinal, anywhere, beating Grand Slam winners in back-toback rounds. The one sure outcome will be an American in the final at Melbourne Park.

The 36-year-old Williams beat No. 24-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-4, 7-6 (3), today, Venus Williams becoming the oldest player to reach the Australian Open women’s semifinals in the Open era.

Vandeweghe dictated play against French Open champion Garbine Muguruza in a 6-4, 6-0 quarterfinal win.

The No. 35-ranked Vandeweghe upset top-ranked Angelique Kerber, who won the Australian and U.S. titles last year, in the fourth round. She followed it with another commanding win.

Vandeweghe saved the only break point she faced in the first set with an ace, and only conceded 10 points in the 28-minute second set. She had 31 winners, including 14 on her powerful forehand side.

“Once I got rolling in the second, it was like a freight train, you couldn’t stop it,” she said.

Williams has advanced through the tournament without losing a set, and isn’t ready to stop there.

“It’s wonderful to start the year out with this appearance,” said Williams, who hadn’t reached the semifinals in Australia since 2003, the year she lost the final to her sister, Serena. “I want to go further. I’m not happy just with this. But I’m so happy to be in the position to like go further.”

Williams said the q u arterfinal results CoCo were a “great win for the Vandeweghe U.S.” “I’m sure she’s going to want to be in her first final,” Williams said. “I’m going to want to be in only my second final here. So it’s going to be a well-contested match.”

Williams lost four service games against Pavlyuchenkova, but she responded each time by breaking back. In the tiebreaker, she trailed 3-1 before winning the last six points – clinching the match on Pavlyuchenkova’s double-fault.

It earned her a spot in the semifinals for the second time in three majors – after a six-year absence from the past four.

Although I think the Wildcats have a good chance of winning at least two of those games, for the sake of discussion, let’s Chris Collins say they lose all four games but win the games they should win against the likes of Nebraska, Rutgers, Illinois et al.

That means they would be 12-6 in the Big Ten and 23-8 overall before the conference tournament started.

Is the NCAA selection committee really going to reject a team that finishes fourth in the Big Ten because its schedule wasn’t exactly Mount Everest? I don’t think so.

Is it going to spurn a team that wins two games in the Big Ten tournament, which the Wildcats should do? I don’t think so.

Is it going to ignore the feel-good

vibes of a team going to the Big Dance for the first time in the 79-year history of the tournament? I don’t think so.

None of this is meant to take anything away from what the Wildcats are doing. They’re a good team, and it’s not their fault the conference is mediocre. Their journey might not have the significance of the Cubs ridding themselves of a century-plus of futility, but what the Wildcats are accomplishing this season is Cubslike, or at least Cubs Lite, which isn’t bad. They haven’t made the tournament since it debuted in 1939. Next year is here?

They beat Ohio State in Columbus on Sunday, the first time in 40 years a Northwestern team has beaten the Buckeyes on the road. History comes up a lot when discussing the talented Wildcats these days. They are dismissing ghosts left and right.

But it needs to be pointed out that they beat a team that is 12-8 overall and 2-5 in the Big Ten. Ohio State isn’t very good. We can argue forever whether Northwestern is a product of a down year for its conference or simply a good team that is getting hurt by its neighbors’ mediocrity. I happen to believe the Wildcats are good, that Collins is a good coach and that good high school players have noticed the things going on in

NU is led by Scottie Lindsey, a former Fenwick star who is seventh in the Big Ten in scoring. He had 21 points against the Buckeyes. But as good as Lindsey and teammate Vic Law (St. Rita) are, this is a true team effort. The Wildcats are ranked second in the conference in both scoring defense (64.3 points a game) and opponents’ field-goal percentage (38.7). Those are two valuable assets for any team to have in the NCAA tournament.

The NU teams that came before this one didn’t deserve a spot in the NCAA tournament. Some of those teams had high hopes, but they had National Invitation Tournament written all over them. They always were praying for a Selection Sunday miracle. This version doesn’t need that. It’s simply good.

There’s a decent chance the Wildcats will get an invite to the Big Dance because of a few good wins and a few tough losses to good teams.

And after all the years of struggle, no apologies will be necessary.

I’m pretty sure Northwestern men’s basketball coach Chris Collins and athletic director Jim Phillips aren’t going to like the following statement, what with the cart being positioned about a mile before the horse: With the Big Ten so remarkably unremarkable this season, Northwestern doesn’t need many signature victories to receive its first NCAA tournament bid in school history. Or maybe any.

The Wildcats, at 16-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play, are ranked 35th in the latest RPI. The tournament selection committee uses many resources when making its choices, and the RPI is one barometer of where a team sits. Another measuring stick, the BPI, ranks NU 34th. All good, right?

Not so fast. The Wildcats’ strength of schedule is ranked 105th in the RPI, and their nonconference strength of schedule is ranked 189th.

The KPI – don’t ask – has their SOS ranked 54th. They are 1-3 against teams ranked in the RPI’s top 25, 1-1 against teams ranked 26-50 and 3-0 against teams ranked 51-100. All of this is not so good, right?

At the risk of angering the tournament gods – and I didn’t even know there were any – it might not matter.

NASCAR overhauls race and playoff format

The Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. – NASCAR is changing its format dramatically for the upcoming season, cutting every race into stages that reward points in hopes of making every lap matter and keeping fans interested.

The overhaul announced Monday assigns three stages to every race. The top 10 drivers at the end of Stage 1 and Stage 2 will be awarded points on a 10-through-1 scale. The third portion of the race will be for the overall victory, and although traditional point scoring will be applied for that stage, the win will be worth 40 points. The rest of the field will be scored on a 35-to-2 scale, and positions 36th to 40 will receive only one point.

All bonus points accumulated through the 26-race regular season can be used in the 10-race playoff, which no longer will be called “The Chase.”

“There are no off weeks, every race matters, not only that, every lap of every race matters,” said Denny Hamlin, one of the many drivers who participated in the panel that created this new format.

NASCAR spent nearly seven months working with a wide range of industry

stakeholders to come up with the changes. Heavily involved were the TV networks, retired drivers Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton, current drivers from the driver council, and team and track executives. Monster Energy, which signed last month as the title sponsor for NASCAR’s top series, was only informed of the shakeup in the past few weeks.

“If we created motorsports today, this is exactly how we would have done it,” Brad Keselowski said. “Just wait until you see it on the race track. It’s the best racing you’ll ever see in your life.”

The new format begins with the Feb. 26 season-opening Daytona 500.

NASCAR was energized by the changes, particularly the stages that will allow for a commercial break that doesn’t occur during green-flag racing. Segment winners will be interviewed during the breaks, and NASCAR likes that it creates a pause that gives fans a chance to reset.

“As a driver, I’m happy to be rewarded for how I performed and not how I finished,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.

Race distances will not change under the format, which will apply to all three national series. Had NASCAR run the system this past season, Jimmie Johnson still would have won the title, but Mar-

tin Truex Jr. would have advanced one more round through the playoffs based on his two victories in the first round.

Among other changes: n There will be no bonus points for leading a lap or for leading the most laps. n The number of laps in each of the first two segments will be the same in a race, and the end of the second stage will be about at the halfway point of the race. n Drivers will earn bonus points

that will be called playoff points and carry with them through the 10-race playoffs. Drivers will earn five playoff points for every race win and one playoff point for every segment win. n The playoffs will remain divided into three three-race rounds with four drivers eliminated after each round to set up four finalists for the season finale, where the four finalists will not be eligible to earn segment victories.

Dear Doctors: I keep reading about new cancer drugs that have been developed in clinical trials. What exactly is a clinical trial and how does it work?

Dear Reader: A clinical trial is a scientific study that looks into whether a specific drug, medical treatment, device or approach is not only effective, but also safe. Although clinical trials for new drugs often get the most press, other important advances arise from the process. New ways to screen for disease, new methods of diagnosis and techniques that will improve the quality of life for people living with disease all are important advances made in clinical trials.

New therapies are tested in treatment trials. Prevention trials investigate methods of lowering disease risk. In screening trials, optimal methods to discover the onset of disease are tested. Supportive care trials focus on quality of life for patients with debilitating disease. Diagnostic trials focus on tests and procedures to pinpoint the exact type of cancer or condition a patient has.

So how does a clinical trial work?

It starts with an idea. A researcher, doctor or other expert comes up with a “what if?” scenario. For example, what if it’s possible to develop a drug to help a patient’s own immune system fight cancer?

The next step is extensive laboratory testing. If the idea continues to show promise, research moves into a clinical trial.

A detailed plan, known as a protocol, is created. It states who is eligible to take part in the clinical trial, details all of the tests and procedures that will be performed, names the drugs that will be involved and how the drugs will be administered. The protocol also indicates the length of the clinical trial, and how the information will be collected and collated.

She did the pop-in again last week. My husband, four children and I were about to sit down to a family dinner when she rang the doorbell.

I didn’t have enough food for her and my father-in-law, which made us all uncomfortable.

She made a sarcastic comment, “Gee, I guess I shouldn’t have come over,” then she sat in the living room staring at us as we ate.

I have begged my husband to say something, but he says it would be disrespectful. I said it is disrespectful that she comes over without checking with us first. What’s your take on this? – No Pop-ins, Please Dear No Pop-ins: You have my sympathy.

Your mother-in-law is a handful. Your husband might be so cowed by his mother he’s afraid to assert himself. You are under no obligation to entertain anyone who pops in, including her.

How does that affect South’s approach in three no-trump? West cashes his four club winners, then shifts to the heart jack.

South’s sequence, a strong, artificial and forcing two clubs followed by two no-trump, showed a balanced hand with a good 22-24 points. North dredged up a raise, more in hope than expectation.

Declarer starts with eight winners: one spade, three hearts and four diamonds. As in yesterday’s deal, it seems that the ninth trick must come from either a successful spade finesse -- a priori a 50-50 shot -- or a 3-3 heart split -- which is only a 35.53 percent chance. So, yesterday, when South could try only one or the other, he banked everything on the spade finesse.

Today, though, declarer can afford to discard a high diamond on the fourth club, keeping the spade ace-queen and all four hearts.

Then, when South takes trick five in his hand, he can cash his other top hearts to see if they divide 3-3.

Here, they do not, so declarer cashes his four diamond tricks, discarding the heart five, and takes the spade finesse.

Finally, note that if West has the spade king, he cannot be squeezed, because he discards after South.
