Mama frets about explaining tattoos POLL YESTERDAY’S

Tattoos and piercings seem to be all around us in a college town. If I notice, I am sure my daughter does, too.

As a matter of fact, I was getting ready for work one morning and Hannah Jo ran up to me and asked, ”What are those?”

I was taken off guard and said, “Temporary tattoos, like the ones you get at birthday parties.”

She said, ”Pretty,” and walked away. Apparently, the explanation was acceptable for her for now.

When she grows older I know I will have to elaborate on my pretty tattoos.

My husband has no tattoos or piercings at all. This is because he is scared of needles.

Once, he even passed out giving blood, which doesn’t make much sense since he’s like 6-feet 4-inches tall and 300 pounds.

One would think he wouldn’t be afraid of anything.

Regardless, he won’t be any help while I am trying to explain why I put permanent ink on my body.

I wish only the best for my baby girl, so whatever makes her happy will make me happy. So what if she decides to get a tattoo? Theoretically, I can’t be miffed or disappointed because I have them, too.

However, I want her to really be responsible and thoughtful if she decides to get one. My wish is that she will get a tattoo that

represents an aspect of her life.

One of my tattoos is the Leo zodiac sign, representing my husband and myself. Another is of my baby in heaven and Hannah Jo’s Aquarius zodiac sign.

Also, I want her tattoos to be discrete like mine. I would hope she would not want one or more that cover her face.

If I am this overreacting about my tats, I wonder what I will think when she notices my nose piercing scar.

Maybe I am being too pretentious with my standards of tattooing, or maybe I am over thinking this.

I mean she is only 2 years old. I guess we should get through potty training first.

Who knows, she could turn out to be deathly afraid of needles like her father, and that will take care of that.

DeKALB – The DeKalb County Community Mental Health Board will be accepting grant requests for organizations and programs that provide mental health services within the county.

Any agency that is serving behavior health services to DeKalb County residents is encouraged to apply.

Funding goes toward programs that provide for the needs of people with mental illness,

developmental disabilities and substance abuse.

Local prevention and educational programs also received funding from the mental health board.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Pledging emphatically to empower America’s “forgotten men and women,” Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States on Friday, taking command of a riven nation facing an unpredictable era under his assertive but untested leadership.

Under cloudy, threatening skies at the West Front of the U.S. Capitol, Trump painted a bleak picture of the America he now leads, declaring as he had throughout the election campaign that it is beset by crime, poverty and a lack of bold action. The billionaire businessman and reality TV star – the first president who had never held political office or high military rank – promised to stir a “new national pride” and protect America from the “ravages” of countries he says have stolen U.S. jobs.

“This American carnage stops right here,” Trump declared. In a warning to the world, he said, “From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land. From this moment on, it’s going to be America first.”

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Steve Ode, father of DeKalb High School student Johnathon Ode who died in a car crash Tuesday night, said his son was a selfless, upbeat individual with a strong love for life.

“It still amazes me how many people [Johnathon’s] life touched,” Ode said Friday. “We’re a small family, and it has really been eye-opening how many people knew him and had interactions with him on a daily basis. Every interaction I’ve had a chance to hear about has been all positive, and that was my son.”

Ode called the community response to the tragedy awe-inspiring and gave particular praise to DeKalb High School, whose choir director, Travis Erikson, organized a group of 42 students to volunteer to sing at Johnathon’s memorial service Saturday.

with people asking what they can do, if they can take care of our son, Louis, and if we need any food,” Ode said.

“It’s all been a lot to wrap your head around.”

The bond Johnathon had with his brother, Louis, was evident the night of the crash, when Louis attempted to follow his older brother out to his car and accompany him when he left the house to meet with friends to play video games.

“Going through high school, John was an only child at home and when my wife was pregnant, we were wondering how he would react, but he fell in love with his little brother and grabbed the reins of that role and never let them go.” Ode said. “[Louis] absolutely adored him and he couldn’t do any wrong in his little brother’s eyes.”

Johnathon was a senior at DeKalb High School and a member of the Gamers Guild and Outdoor Adventure Club. Ode and his wife were also both teachers at the school and said they were extremely proud of their son.

“He was the best son a family could ever ask for, he was very devoted and he didn’t deserve this,” Ode said. “I’m honored that I was given the chance to be his father. He was the sweetest human being you could ever meet and he would do anything for anybody and would gladly give you the shirt off of his back.”

The memorial service is set for 3 p.m. today at Anderson Funeral Home, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb. Steve Saunders of Millbrook United Methodist Church will officiate. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the memorial service.

The family has asked that memorials be made to the Johnathon R. Ode Memorial Fund, addressed to the Ode family in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, IL 60115.

Donations to the memorial fund also can be made on gofundme.com. In the two days since the GoFundMe campaign was started, it has raised $3,635 out of its $10,000 goal.

Rauner nominates new trustees for Northern Illinois DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Gov. Bruce Rauner announced three new appointments and one reappointment to the Northern Illinois University board of trustees Friday.

New appointees are Eric Wasowicz, Dennis Barsema and Veronica Herraro. Board member Timothy A. Struthers was reappointed to a sixyear term.

The eight-person board consists of seven appointed officials and one student trustee elected annually by NIU

students. The current student trustee is Matthew W. Holmes.

The terms of the board’s three other nonstudent members, Robert T. Boey, John Butler and Wheeler G.Coleman, are set to expire in 2019.

Trustees Robert T. Marshall Jr., Cherilyn G. Murer, Marc J. Strauss and Struthers all were serving terms that expired in January. Strauss announced his resignation earlier this week after learning he would not be reappointed; the other trustees can remain in their positions until their successors are confirmed by the state Senate.

Wasowicz received a bachelor of arts degree in computer science from NIU’s business program and is an instructor of management and entrepreneurship courses at NIU. He is an investor and adviser at the Greenbrier Group LLC, where he provides business and IT consulting services.

Barsema also is an NIU graduate.

He is the president and CEO of Redback Networks and previously was president and CEO of Onetta, Inc. He is the largest donor in NIU history and has two buildings on campus named after him, Barsema Hall and the Barse-

ma Alumni and Visitors Center.

Herrero earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago.

She is the chief program officer at One Million Degrees, which focuses on helping community college students transition to careers or four-year universities. She was previously the director of College Success Programs at the University of Chicago’s Urban Education Institute and the vice president of operations for Progressus Therapy.

Sycamore plans balanced budget for fiscal 2018

SYCAMORE – Sycamore city officials are expecting a balanced budget for fiscal 2018, but some factors could change the city’s projected revenue within the next few months, City Manager Brian Gregory said.

Gregory reviewed budget estimates with members of the Sycamore City Council this week for the fiscal year that begins May 1.

He said the city is expecting to receive $16,387,375 in revenue in fiscal 2018, which is about 2.04 percent more than the estimate for the current fiscal year.

Gregory said the city is expected to have about $16,060,000 in revenue by the end of fiscal 2017, while

the year’s budgeted revenue was about $16,087,000.

“It’s within two-tenths of a percent at this point,” Gregory said. “As we move along, those numbers become clearer and clearer.”

Officials are not anticipating any new sources of revenue in fiscal 2018, he said.

Two factors that could affect the city reaching its budget projections are the telecommunication tax and income tax, Gregory said.

Revenue from the telecommunication tax applied to landlines and cellphones has been flat for the past two years, and although trends had indicated it might increase, it will most likely decrease, Gregory said.

He said the income tax level also is projected to decrease from the fiscal 2017 prediction of $102 a

resident to $97.20 a resident, with each dollar representing a potential shift of almost $18,000 for city coffers.

“Those two factors are weighing down our ability to get to our budget,” he said. “I think we’ll still be very close, and we’re working on the expenditure side to cut and save where we can, which, at the end of the day, I anticipate we will deliver a budget that is balanced.”

Gregory said the budget could be adjusted within the next few months based on changing market trends.

A preliminary budget will be established for review in mid-March with a final presentation in April before the beginning of fiscal 2018 May 1, according to the budget consideration.

Born May 7, 1928 in Revere, Minnesota, the son of Robert and Stella (Fairchild) MaKarrall. Dale married Beverly Ann Mosback on June 30, 1949.

Dale was a veteran of the United States Army. He was employed by Spaulding in DeKalb for over 25 years and was a member of the DeKalb Moose and the First United Methodist Church. Dale was an avid woodworker and enjoyed golf and fishing.

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A Sycamore man accused of tying up and repeatedly raping a 19-year-old acquaintance is a danger to the community and must be held in jail without bond until trial, a judge ruled Friday.

DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery said Thomas A. Broughton, 24, of the 400 block of East State Street, Sycamore, was “a real and present threat to the public.” Broughton and his fiancée, Ashley N. Zick, 21, have both been charged with sexual assault and unlawful restraint. If convicted, Broughton, who already has been to prison for a previous sex crime, faces a mandatory sentence of natural life in prison.

Prosecutors had asked the judge to deny bond to Broughton. At a hearing

Friday, First Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein detailed the strength of the case against Broughton and argued that he shouldn’t be freed under any cirThomas A. cumstances.

Broughton She said Broughton and Zick brought the 19-year-old woman to their apartment in Sycamore and gave her a mixture of orange juice and alcohol.

The woman said she felt sleepy and when she awoke some of her clothing had been removed. She told police she was tied to the bed with straps. Klein said police later recovered the straps from the apartment after obtaining a search warrant.

Klein also told the judge about two other pieces of evidence collected from the scene that supported the 19-year-

old woman’s account – what appeared to be blood-stained bedding and an object Zick told police she used during the attack.

Zick’s statements to police also supported the woman’s account, Klein said. Broughton didn’t make statements to police, the prosecutor said.

Klein also detailed Broughton’s criminal history. In 2011, Broughton was charged with predatory criminal sexual assault of a child for touching a 5-year-old girl. In 2012, he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and was sentenced to seven years in prison, according to court records.

In September, Broughton was charged with failing to register as a sex offender in Sycamore. He pleaded not guilty to that charge Nov. 28 and was free on bond at the time of the alleged rape.

Klein argued that if a previous prison sentence, sex offender registration requirements and being out on bond for a felony didn’t serve as a deterrent for Broughton, the public was at risk.

Broughton’s court-appointed attorney, Bob Nolan, made no argument for his client’s release during Friday’s hearing.

Shortly after the ruling, Broughton made a remark that prompted a rebuke from the judge. The 24-year-old immediately apologized; Montgomery said he accepted the apology. Klein didn’t hear the remark and Nolan declined to comment on the matter.

Broughton’s hearing was postponed for nearly an hour Friday afternoon, in part because of a delay in getting Broughton from the jail to the courthouse across the street.

Broughton is next due in court at 9 a.m. Feb. 10 for a preliminary hearing.

Despite entering a time of Republican dominance, Trump made little mention of the party’s bedrock principles: small government, social conservativism and robust American leadership around the world.

He left no doubt he considers himself the product of a movement – not a party.

Trump declared his moment a fulfillment of his campaign pledge to take a sledgehammer to Washington’s traditional ways, and he spoke directly to the alienated and disaffected.

“What truly matters is not which party controls our government, but whether our government is controlled by the people,” he said. “To all Americans in every city near and far, small and large from mountain to mountain, from ocean to ocean, hear these words: You will never be ignored again.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Illinois Senate leaders plan to vote on a compromise budget deal next week, and hope the House will be willing to work with them on a measure to end the near-two-year state budget stalemate.

Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago and Minority Leader Christine Radogno of Lemont told the Chicago Tribune editorial board that the proposal will get a Senate vote Wednesday.

Even if the Senate approves the income tax increase, borrowing $7 billion to pay off bills, a new tax on sugary drinks, expanding legalized gambling, tightening workers’ compensation rules and freezing local property taxes for two years, there’s no guarantee that the House will consider them, under the leadership of Democratic Speaker Michael Madigan of Chicago.

“We’re not negotiating with the House or the governor. We’re trying to see if we can get a bill out of one chamber,” said Cullerton, adding that if it goes to the House, he hopes it “would

Police seek 9 charged after Christmas Eve mall fight

GURNEE – Police in Gurnee are asking the public to help them find nine people who face charges after a Christmas Eve mall fight.

Gurnee police on Thursday said arrest warrants were issued for seven adults and two juveniles on charges ranging from mob action to aggravated battery.

The (Waukegan) News Sun reported the charges result from a fight Dec. 24 between two groups of people at Gurnee Mills mall.

Authorities said prosecutors obtained the arrest warrants after police finished their investigation using security camera footage, YouTube video and help from Waukegan police and mall security.

Judge in ex-congressman’s trial recuses herself

SPRINGFIELD – A federal judge who was to preside over the corruption trial of former Illinois Congressman Aaron Schock has recused herself.

U.S. District Judge Sue Myerscough on Thursday stepped down from the trial, agreeing with defense attorneys that several issues could create an appearance of Aaron bias.

4 plead not guilty to fraud charges in Rockford

ROCKFORD – Four Rockford residents were arrested on federal charges of food stamp fraud and wire fraud.

The Rockford Register Star reported that the residents are accused of accepting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits in exchange for cash.

All four people have pleaded not guilty.

If convicted, they could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for each wire fraud count.

Federal authorities raided and seized paperwork from several businesses Wednesday.

John G. McKenzie is the assistant U.S. attorney in Rockford. Citing the ongoing investigation, he declined to comment on whether other businesses were involved.

Officer responding to call dies after crash

BLOOMINGDALE – Authorities said a Bloomingdale police officer has died after crashing an SUV while responding to a call about a crime in progress at a business.

Police said 27-year-old Raymond Murrell was involved in a single-vehicle crash Thursday night. He was taken to a hospital and police said he was pronounced dead.

Bloomingdale police Chief Frank Giammarese said Murrell was on the force less than a year. Murrell’s fellow officers and local emergency crews responded to the crash involving the unmarked police SUV, which had emergency lights on at the time of the crash.

Giammarese said Murrell was “a shining star” with a bright future. He and another officer were recently recognized for saving a heart-attack victim.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

HOUSTON – Doctors removed former President George H.W. Bush’s breathing tube Friday and he was breathing well on his own at a Houston hospital, his spokesman said.

The tube was inserted Wednesday while the 92-yearold former president was being treated for pneumonia. Bush remains in intensive care at Houston Methodist Hospital but is comfortable, family spokesman Jim McGrath said.

“He was extubated this morning, and is breathing well on his own with minimal supplemental oxygen,” McGrath said. “President Bush is comfortable and watching inauguration coverage together with Mrs. Bush, their son Neil and daughter-in-law Maria.”

Former first lady Barbara Bush also remained hospitalized Friday for treatment of bronchitis, but she’s feeling better and “focusing on spending time with her husband,” McGrath said.

The 91-year-old is expected to remain in the hospital over the weekend as a precaution.

BEIRUT – Islamic State militants have destroyed parts of the second-century Roman amphitheater and an iconic monument known as the Tetrapylon in Syria’s historic town of

Palmyra, the government and experts said Friday.

It was the extremist group’s latest attack on world heritage, an act that the U.N. cultural agency called a “war crime.”

A Syrian government official said he feared for the remaining antiquities in Palmyra, which IS recaptured last month.

The U.N. Security Council “strongly condemned the ongoing barbaric attacks” by the militant group in Syria, “including the destruction of cultural heritage such as parts of the Roman Theater in Palmyra.”

Man arrested in Ecuador in NYC theft of gold flakes

NEW YORK – A fugitive wanted for the brazen theft of an 86-pound bucket of gold flakes worth nearly $1.6 million off an armored truck in midtown Manhattan has been arrested in Ecuador, police said Friday.

U.S. Homeland Security investigators and New York City and Ecuadorean police apprehended Julio Nivelo, who also uses aliases.

In Ecuador, prosecutor Maria Aguirre said Nivelo would be tried in the country for theft. Ecuador does not permit extradition.

Nivelo was arrested Thursday after leaving the home of a relative, where he had been living, said police Col. Carlos Coloma.

Officials tracked him from New York through Florida, they said.

El Chapo is hauled off to ultra-secure U.S. jail The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – In a scene U.S. authorities had dreamed of for decades, Mexican drug lord and escape artist Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was hauled into an American courtroom Friday and then taken away to an ultra-secure jail that has held some of the world’s most dangerous terrorists and mobsters.

Holding his unshackled hands behind his back, a dazed-looking Guzman entered a not guilty plea through his lawyers to drug trafficking and other charges at a Brooklyn courthouse ringed by squad cars, officers with assault rifles and bomb-sniffing dogs.

“He’s a man known for a life of crime, violence, death and destruction, and now he’ll have to answer for that,” Robert Capers, the U.S. attorney in Brooklyn, said at a news conference.

The court appearance came hours after Guzman’s Thursday night extradition from Mexico, where he had become something of a folk hero for two brazen prison escapes.

Guzman was ordered held without bail and was expected to be kept in a special Manhattan jail unit where other highrisk inmates – including Mafia boss John Gotti and several close associates of Osama bin Laden – spent their time awaiting trial.

“It is difficult to imagine another person with a greater risk of fleeing prosecution,” prosecutors wrote in court papers.

Prosecutors described Guzman as the murderous overseer of a three-decade campaign of smuggling, brutality and corruption that made his Sinaloa drug cartel a fortune while fueling an epidemic of cocaine abuse and related violence in the U.S. in the 1980s and ’90s.

American authorities finally got their wish on the eve of Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration, although it was unclear if the timing of the extradition was intended as a sign of respect to the Republican or some kind of slap, perhaps an effort to let outgoing Democratic President Barack Obama take the credit.

When Guzman got off a plane in New York, “as you looked into his eyes, you could see the surprise, you could see the shock, and to a certain extent, you could see the fear, as the realization kicked in that he’s about to face American justice,” said Angel Melendez, a U.S. Immigration and Cus-

toms Enforcement agent.

While Guzman faces federal charges in several U.S. states, federal prosecutors in Brooklyn won the jockeying to get the case. The U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn has substantial experience prosecuting international drug cartel cases and was once led by outgoing U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

New York also boasts one of the most secure lockups in the U.S., the Metropolitan Correctional Center in lower Manhattan. The drab-looking building is protected by steel barricades that can stop up to 7½ tons of speeding truck, and the area is watched by cameras capable of reading a newspaper a block away.

The jail’s inmates have included Ramzi Yousef, who was the architect of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme king Bernard Madoff.

In the special high-security wing for the riskiest inmates, around a dozen prisoners spend 23 hours a day in roughly 20-by-12-foot cells, prohibited from communicating with one another. Meals are eaten in cells, and exercise is in a recreation area specifically for these inmates.

Trump calls first day ‘busy but good’

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump quickly assumed the mantle of the White House on Friday making his first executive order one aimed at his predecessor’s signature health care law and swearing-in members of his national security team to his Cabinet.

Hours after delivering a stinging rebuke of the political status quo in his inaugural address, Trump sat at the president’s formal desk in the Oval Office as he signed the order that White House chief of staff Reince Priebus said was aimed at “minimizing the economic burden” of the “Obamacare” law.

The order notes that Trump intends to seek the “prompt repeal” of the law.

But in the meantime, it allows the Health and Human Services Department and other federal agencies to delay implementing any piece of the law that might impose a “fiscal burden” on states, health care providers, families or individuals.

Moments later, Vice President Mike Pence administered the oath of office to Defense Secretary James Mattis and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, the first members of Trump’s Cabinet to clear Senate confirmation.

The swearing-in ceremonies came amid a hectic set of activity late Friday, before Trump was to attend three inaugural balls.

As Trump signed the paperwork, the White House announced Priebus had sent a memorandum to agencies and departments outlining guidelines for slowing regulations.

Asked about his first day as president, Trump said, “It was busy but good – a beautiful day.”

Although Trump campaigned on a detailed 18-point plan of things to do on Day 1, he has since backed off some of his promised speed, downplaying the importance of a rapid-fire approach to complex issues that may involve negotiations with Congress or foreign leaders.

Trump has said that he expects Monday to be the first big workday, his effective Day 1.

Protests erupt near parade route The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Protesters registered their rage against the new president Friday in a chaotic confrontation with police who used pepper spray and stun grenades in a melee just blocks from President Donald Trump’s inaugural parade. At least 217 people were arrested for rioting while a burning limousine sent clouds of black smoke into the sky during Trump’s procession.

Several spirited demonstrations unfolded peacefully at various security checkpoints near the Capitol as police helped ticket-holders get through to the inaugural ceremony. Signs read, “Resist Trump Climate Justice Now,” “Let Freedom Ring” and “Free Palestine.”

But about a mile from the National Mall, police gave chase to a group of about 100 protesters who smashed the windows of downtown businesses including a Starbucks, a Bank of America and a McDonald’s as they denounced capitalism and Trump. Police in riot gear used pepper spray from large canisters and eventually cordoned off protesters at 12th and L streets in northwest Washington.

“They began to destroy property, throw objects at people, through win-

dows. A large percentage of this small group was armed with crowbars and hammers,” said the city’s interim police chief, Peter Newsham.

Six officers suffered minor injuries, he said.

The confrontation began an hour before Trump took the oath of office and escalated several hours later as the crowd of protesters swelled to more than 1,000, some wearing gas masks and with arms chained together inside PVC pipe. One said the demonstrators were “bringing in the cavalry.”

When some crossed police lines, taunting, “Put the pigs in the ground,” police charged with batons and pepper spray, as well as stun grenades, which are used to shock and disperse crowds.

Loud booms echoed through the streets about six blocks from where Trump would soon hold his inaugural parade.

Some protesters picked up bricks and concrete from the sidewalk and hurled them at police lines. Some rolled large, metal trash cans at police.

The limousine was attacked on the perimeter of the secured zone. As Trump and his parade of celebrants moved along Pennsylvania Avenue, the vehicle was ablaze, tainting the air for blocks and sending protesters and pass-

ers-by moving swiftly away.

As night fell, young protesters ignited a large bonfire blocks from the White House in McPherson Square. They carried signs such as “Hail to the Thief” and hung an upside-down American flag as women in gowns and men in tuxedos passed by, presumably en route to one of the inaugural balls.

Police said protesters damaged vehicles, destroyed property and set small fires while armed with crowbars and hammers. All 217 people arrested were charged with rioting, Newsham said, noting that the group caused “significant damage” along a number of blocks.

Before Inauguration Day, the DisruptJ20 coalition, named after the date of the inauguration, had promised that people participating in its actions in Washington would attempt to shut down the celebrations, risking arrest when necessary.

Trump supporter Brett Ecker said the protesters were frustrating but weren’t going to put a damper on his day.

“They’re just here to stir up trouble,” the 36-year-old public school teacher said. “It upsets me a little bit that people choose to do this, but yet again, it’s one of the things I love about this country.”

Thumbs-up to successful power transfer Thumbs-up: To another successful, mostly peaceful transfer of power. After a contentious campaign that included violent protests, threatening phrases such as “Lock her up” and 11th-hour bombshells that embarrassed both major party candidates, Donald Trump was sworn in Friday as the 45th president of the United States with few problems. Thank you to Barack Obama for his eight years of service. Good luck to President Donald Trump in his first term in office.

Thumbs-down: To the vandals masquerading Friday as protesters in downtown Washington, D.C. We support people’s right to voice their opinions and protest things in society they believe are wrong – even the election of a president – but damaging and destroying private and public property does nothing to that end.

The hooligans running through the streets smashing windows and clashing with police weren’t making any kind of statement. They were simply breaking the law, and discrediting protesters by association.

Thumbs-up: To this year’s DeKalb Chamber of Commerce honorees. Many people from around the community turned out Thursday evening to honor several people for their contributions to civic and business life.

Bill Finucane, Tim and Ann Lehan, and Lauren Woods each were inducted into the chamber’s Hall of Fame, Marcia Thompson was named the ambassador of the year, and the DeKalb Public Library was named business of the year. Thanks to all of this year’s honorees for the contributions they and their businesses make to the community.

Thumbs-up: To performing in Washington, D.C. Forty-three Sandwich High School band and chorus members, five chaperones and the band’s director, Justin Heinekamp, were among the people who traveled to the nation’s capital this week to witness Donald Trump’s inauguration and perform at the 2017 Inauguration Heritage Festival. American democracy’s most formal and serious occasion occurs only once every four years and we hope that the ceremony, the other capital attractions and the festival were worth the bus ride.

Thumbs-up: To a new restaurants in the area. A new Burger King recently opened on DeKalb Avenue in Sycamore, and now a Sonic Drive-In restaurant is planned for a vacant building at 1115 W. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb. The Sonic proposal still must be reviewed by the city, but considering the building was last used as a KFC and Long John Silver’s restaurant, it probably will fit well in the space. We wouldn’t recommend dining too often at any fast-food restaurants – unless you want to be super-sized – but the promise of a new restaurant option in the area is enticing, and we’re sure there will be long lines when the new restaurant opens its doors.

Defending the tax collectors

Few Cabinet positions are more important than secretary of the treasury. President Donald Trump’s choice for the job, Steven Mnuchin, is a smart financier who knows his way around a balance sheet.

That much was evident during Mnuchin’s confirmation hearing before the Senate Finance Committee. Under aggressive questioning by Democrats, Mnuchin defended his takeover of the failing IndyMac bank at the height of the 2008 panic: Housing advocacy groups have said he and his partners made a killing by turning the institution into a “foreclosure machine.” While acknowledging the mistakes and excesses that sometimes cost borrowers their homes, Mnuchin reminded the committee that his group took over IndyMac’s distressed loan portfolio in response to the federal government’s search for private investors to bail it out so as to limit taxpayer losses.

He was less successful in explaining his belated disclosure of more than $100 million in assets until the eve of the hearing, or

in explaining how the Trump tax cuts would not blow a large hole in federal finances; instead, he invoked the Trump team’s boosterish forecasts for economic growth as an elixir for deficits.

On at least one important point, however, Mnuchin followed the encouraging example of previous Trump Cabinet nominees who have disagreed at their hearings with the president-elect’s more dubious policies or attitudes. Specifically, Mnuchin said that trade policy is not about limiting imports, it’s about growing exports, an implicit but obvious contrast to Trump’s blaming of China’s perfidy for the trade deficit and threats to slap tariffs on imports from Mexico.

Most refreshingly, Mnuchin was willing to dispute Republican orthodoxy regarding the Internal Revenue Service, the perennial whipping boy of the GOP. The IRS, which resides within the Treasury Department, has lost 17 percent of its budget in real terms since 2010, along with 23 percent of its enforcement staff, thanks in part to reflexive hostility to the tax-collection agency from

the GOP in Congress. Mnuchin told the committee that he is “very concerned” about the lack of staff and up-to-date technology at the IRS. Modernizing the IRS would be “one of my great priorities,” Mnuchin said. He assured the committee that “the president-elect understands the concept of where we add people, we make money.”

Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, asked Mnuchin to guarantee that the IRS would never use its powers to target individuals because of their political views.

This was an allusion to the “scandal,” hyped by Republicans, about supposed IRS harassment of conservative groups. But the point could apply equally well to the next president, who would be in a position to abuse the IRS’s power to quash legitimate political opposition. “You have my 100 percent assurance,” Mnuchin replied, thus accepting a key limitation on executive power, and a standard to which every administration must be held.

Donald Trump was busy Friday.

He and Mike Pence promised, Mother Jones magazine points out, that on Trump’s first day in office he would repeal Obamacare, end the “war on coal,” expel illegal immigrants, begin construction of a “beautiful Southern border wall,” fix the Department of Veterans Affairs, come up with a plan to stop ISIS, get rid of “gun-free zones,” “start taking care of our ... military,” withdraw from the TPP trade agreement, cut regulations and designate China a currency manipulator.

OK, much of that was probably just campaign talk. I’m grateful for that. I hope some of it never happens.

But there’s a lot of good Trump and Pence could have done on their first day, or, let’s be generous, could do on their first week. How about this?

Monday: Abolish the Department of Commerce.

Trump is a businessman, so he knows that business works best when government stays out of it. Why does America need something called a Commerce Department? Commerce just happens; it doesn’t need a department.

DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said his team needed to adjust to how the game was being called by the referees. The Barbs committed 13 fouls in the first half and Kaneland was in the bonus in the first quarter.

“The thing is every game is its own lifetime, and you have to be able to adjust to the way the game is being called,” Biancalana said. “If they’re going to pay particular attention

to screening, then you can’t be moving your feet cause you’re inciting them to make a call. Some games you could drive a bulldozer through and screen somebody. Tonight, you couldn’t even be a willow tree. It’s one of those things you have to adjust, and I don’t think we adjusted well.”

With three starters on the bench late in the first half, sophomore Michael Newman scored all seven of his points

in the second quarter and was the Barbs’ third leading scorer of the game.

The Barbs also finished with a 25-12 edge on the boards.

The Knights had only six rebounds through the first three quarters.

“We played really hard, but we don’t have anybody to keep anybody off the boards,” Kaneland coach Joe Conroy said.

“It came down to rebounds, and we don’t have anybody

to rebound the basketball. ...

They’re big, and we’re 5-8.”

Conroy said the Knights alternated between man and zone defense in an effort to keep the Barbs off balance, although the defense also was new to the Knights.

“I thought switching the defensive looks was giving DeKalb some trouble,” Conroy said. “I thought we did what we wanted. We did a good job attacking in the first half, but in the second half, they ended with four fouls. We stopped attacking. We didn’t keep doing the things we needed to do.”

By the numbers: Dan Franck scored nine points for the Knights, with Rhett Espe scoring nine off the bench and Jake Hed chipping in eight.

It was the ninth straight loss for Kaneland, which shot 33 percent from the floor. Tucker had six points, four rebounds, three steals, six assists and four blocks for DeKalb.

Beyond the stats: Biancalana was in his first game back coaching the Barbs after missing the weekend’s tournament at Hononegah because of a minor surgery on his gall bladder.

They said it: “Joe’s kids always play hard. They kept coming back and coming back and coming back,” Biancalana said. “I was proud of our second group, especially Michael Newman. He’s a sophomore, and he had seven points in that second quarter.”

Up next: The Barbs face rival Sycamore in the First National Challenge at 7:30 p.m.

Friday at the NIU Convocation Center. The Knights travel to Morris at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

MAPLE PARK – With a definite size advantage against injury-depleted Kaneland, the DeKalb boys basketball team looked to feed the ball inside.

Foul trouble might have derailed that plan for a short while in the first half. The Barbs scored 15 of the first 18 points, shot 68 percent from the field for the game and beat the Knights, 57-36, to snap a three-game losing streak.

“Driving was a main message,” said DeKalb guard Michael Mitchell, who made all six of his two-points shots and was 2 for 4 from 3-point range, finishing with a game-high 19 points. “We’ve been struggling shooting lately, so it was like drive, drive, drive. Don’t force anything, take what they give you.”

The game started with the Barbs (13-6, 5-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) feeding the ball inside to 6-foot-6 forward Darvon Sisson against a Kaneland team that started four players 5-9 or shorter. The Knights (4-15, 1-4) were without leading scorer Blake Feiza (63), as well as 6-1 Jack Douglas.

Sisson made his first three shots, but picked up two fouls in the first quarter, as did Marcus Bobo. Instead of building on the 15-3 lead after the first quarter, the Barbs committed turnovers on their first two possessions in the second, leading to five Kaneland points. The Barbs’ lead hovered between nine and 14 points until they closed the game on a 12-0 run – all on layups, with six of those points coming from Mitchell and four from point guard Cole Tucker.

MELBOURNE, Australia – Serena Williams is still on track in her bid to win a record 23rd Grand Slam title.

The six-time Australian Open winner beat fellow American Nicole Gibbs 6-1, 6-3 in the third round on Saturday, when she didn’t face a break point until she was serving for the match.

Dropping serve in that game was her only lapse in a match that then extended just beyond the hour – to 63 minutes to be precise. That made it one minute and one game longer than her only other match against Gibbs.

“Sycamore is not a great matchup for us at all,” Rochelle coach Tim Thompson said. “They got us earlier in the season. They have size and strength at positions that we struggle with.”

There definitely was a struggle in containing the Spartans’ three key seniors. Ty Sulaver struggled in the first half but provided a spark during a rally in the third quarter, ending the game with nine points. Jack Mizgalski finished with 18 points. Keyshawn Stallworth had a game-high 19 points, although he ran into foul trouble in the second half after 16 points in the first half.

“I thought the whole first half, Stallworth was fantastic,“ Thompson said.

“We couldn’t keep him off the boards.

I know he’s been doing it all year. We talk about trying to seal him out, but he is a hard kid to seal out. Fortunately for us, he ended up getting in foul trouble.”

Packers WRs Nelson, Adams still iffy

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Packers might not know the status of injured receivers Jordy Nelson, Davante Adams and Geronimo Allison until just before the NFC Championship Game on Sunday.

Coach Mike McCarthy said Friday that all three receivers would be “given every chance to play in the game.”

The Packers didn’t have on-field work Friday, when all three players were listed as questionable on the injury report.

The team might make a decision on the receivers after the final practice of the week Saturday, although McCarthy said it was possible that at least one or two players would be pushed back to just before the game Sunday in Atlanta against the Falcons.

Nelson was limited in practice this week as he recovers from broken ribs.

He led the NFL with 14 touchdown catches.

Nelson wasn’t at Lambeau Field on Friday because of an unrelated illness, McCarthy said. He apparently came down with a bug that bothered kicker Mason Crosby earlier in the week, as well as quarterback Aaron Rodgers later in the week.

“Rest. Fluids. All that stuff. We’ll be OK,” Rodgers said.

Adams, who has an ankle injury, had 12 touchdown catches. Nelson and Adams were the top two receivers for Rodgers in the passing game.

Allison, a rookie, emerged in the last couple of weeks of the regular season with eight catches for 157 yards and a score while filling in when Randall Cobb was hurt. Allison has a hamstring injury.

Illness shouldn’t have any bearing on the decision about Nelson after he looked good in practice this week, McCarthy said.

“It was good to have him out there,” McCarthy said. “Really, today was the most important day for those three (receivers), so, really, the information that comes out of the training room today will give us a better idea where we are.”

The Packers are left with Cobb, along with third-year player Jeff Janis and rookie Trevor Davis at receiver.

Janis and Davis each had their first regular-season touchdown catches during the teams’ meeting in the regular season in October, when Cobb missed the game with an ankle injury and then-receiver Ty Montgomery sat out because of illness.

Montgomery has since been moved to running back, although he remains a pass-catching threat out of the backfield.

But Darling quickly stomped out the flame of any burgeoning goalie controversy. At least, in his mind.

“I don’t know if you guys know who my goalie partner is, but he’s one of the best goalies in the world, hands-down, no arguments,” Darling said.

“I’m just pretty happy to get

any games I can.”

Darling, who spends his summers in the north Boston suburb of Essex, said he was “appreciative” of the start, and that “They didn’t have to do that.” But Darling’s aw-shucks attitude belies his consistently stellar play. In seven of his past 11 starts, including his three-week stint in December as the No. 1 while Crawford recovered from an appendectomy, Darling has allowed one

goal or no goals.

“He’s always ready,” Hossa said. “Obviously, when he’s in the net, he seems huge there. He always makes the key saves. Another shutout for him. It’s unreal the way he’s just always ready, (even) when he’s not playing for a longer time.”

Darling was tested early and often, as the Bruins were all over the Hawks to start, in an all-too-familiar first period.

Boston outshot the Hawks, 176, but thanks largely to pointblank Darling saves on Joe Morrow and Austin Czarnik, the score was 0-all after one. It stayed that way through two periods, with Darling ston-

Hossa still productive during scoring drought

mlazerus@suntimes.com BOSTON – Marian Hossa knew it was unlikely that he could keep up his early season goal-scoring pace all season. Few NHL players reach 40 goals in a season these days, and certainly not 38-year-olds coming off a 13-goal season.

“It would be nice to score all the time, but it’s not going to happen,” said Hossa, who had 16 goals in his first 31 games.

That said, it had been more than a month since Hossa last scored a goal, a span that included 10 games played and five games missed with an injury. Hossa does have six assists in that span, including a three-assist game Tuesday night in Colorado in his latest role on the third line with Vinnie Hinostroza and Tanner Kero.

Hossa is hardly the only big-name

player in a goal-scoring drought lately. Jonathan Toews entered Friday’s game with one goal in his past nine games, and Artem Anisimov hadn’t scored in six. “[Hossa] came up with a big game last game, production wise,” coach Joel Quenneville said before Friday’s game in Boston.

“It doesn’t always have to be shot in the net.

His line had a big night.

I think a couple of guys Marian Hossa coming off injuries, their production hasn’t gotten to that level where they were prior to that, but that’s part of the season. That consistency is what we’re looking for.”

Hossa has spent the past several seasons on the top line with Toews, but was bumped down to the third line with Hinostroza and Kero as Quenneville sought balance in the lineup. One game

is an extremely small sample size, but the two rookies and the veteran looked dangerous from the first shift. Hinostroza and Kero each had two goals.

“Those guys are great skaters, they’ve been playing [in the NHL] for a while and they show us great things,” Hossa said. “They’re getting more comfortable. It seems they’re having more and more chances. I like how the line looked the other day, and that’s a good sign.”

When asked if he was 100 percent since returning from an upper-body injury Jan. 5, Hossa said, “I’m pretty good, yeah.”

Kruger update: Marcus Kruger’s original timetable for his hand injury had him coming back either Friday in Boston or Sunday at home against Vancouver. It’s taken a little longer than expected, but Quenneville was optimistic Kruger could join the team in practice and in a game sometime next week.

“I don’t think he’s too far away,” Quenneville said. “We’ll get him in before the All-Star break.”

Quality time: Ryan Hartman and Hinostroza have been playing together since they were kids, and their fathers have been on plenty of road trips together. So having all of them together on the road again this week during the dads’ trip has been particularly rewarding.

“It’s been good; it’s been fun,” Hartman said. “It’s nice to have him on the road. Usually he was paying for the road trips when we were young. All the expenses were on him and dinner and all that stuff. It’s nice to take him out to dinner.”

Said Hinostroza: “It’s really cool.

Our dads, they were talking about it, laughing about it going back to when we were 12 going on road trips. It’s cool to be [like] in the old days and rooming with our dads.”

BOSTON – Scott Darling got the start Friday night in Boston not so much because Corey Crawford has looked human lately, but because, well, he had to start sometime. With no back-to-back games on the schedule until mid-February, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville figured Friday’s game against the Bruins, with Darling’s dad in attendance, was as good a night as any to get him some work.

As for whether Darling could force his hand and keep the net for another night, Quenneville demurred, saying, “Their play a lot of time makes our decision for us.”

Darling made his case, making 30 saves to singlehandedly keep the Hawks in the game long enough for them to steal a 1-0 victory over the embattled Bruins at TD Garden. It was Marian Hossa who got the game-winning goal, one-timing a cross-goalmouth backhanded feed from Tanner Kero with 1:26 left in the third period. But it was Darling who was the hero in this one.

It was more of the same in the third, as Darling made big saves on Brad Marchand (during a Hawks power play) and Frank Vatrano as the sleepy pace picked up considerably late in the game, Tuukka Rask didn’t see as many shots, but he kept the game scoreless with a variety of stops, including one on Brent Seabrook in the slot in the second, and one on a streaking Artemi Panarin on the power play in the third.

But he couldn’t stop Hossa’s 17th goal of the season in the dying minutes, which was all the Hawks needed because of Darling.

All Quenneville would say when asked if Darling was under consideration to start Sunday’s home game against Vancouver was a brisk, “We’ll see.” But at the very least, Darling has proved he could alleviate some of the burden on the workhorse Crawford, while keeping the Hawks in every game.

“He certainly helped himself in a big way today,” Quenneville said.

Wade was asked if Chicago would be the ideal landing spot for Bosh, especially because Wade could pick up his option for next season and is all about the recruiting game. Add to the fact that Taj Gibson is all set to explore the free-agent market and there will be payroll money to spend, and just like that the rumor grows legs.

One major problem, however.

Bosh’s condition could be life-threatening. For a franchise riddled with health issues since 2012, is that the path to go down?

“I know Chris is worried about his health first,” Wade said. “He has a family that he loves, and he wants to make sure that he’s as healthy and whole as he can, but also he loves the game of basketball. So when that day comes, there are always going to be stories about guys where they have friends at.

“Everyone knows he’s a good friend of mine, so that’s probably where you

get some of that. But besides that, he hasn’t told me that.”

Hoiberg’s concerns with the roster were a bit more immediate.

With the Feb. 23 trade deadline approaching, if general manager Gar Forman does have a plan to get “younger and more athletic,” as was advertised before they signed Wade and his now 35-year-old knees in the summer, well, it might be time to actually start taking steps in that direction.

Every front office in sports has a big board filled with names of potential players they could pursue, but it’s starting to seem as though Forman uses his big board to doodle on.

“That’s a great question on how active we will be,” Hoiberg said. “We’ll see how things play out. If there’s moves to be made that can help the franchise in the future, obviously, things will happen, but it’s got to be a move that makes sense for both sides and very rarely does that happen.”

jcowley@suntimes.com ATLANTA – Between Friday night’s plane ride home from Atlanta until Saturday’s night’s tip with Sacramento, everything was going to be evaluated.

Starters, bench, staff … coach Fred Hoiberg sounded like everything and everyone was in play.

“Sure there are,” the Bulls coach said, when asked if there were changes he actually could make to jumpstart some sort of consistency. “There always is. Again, we’ll look at everything. We have a short amount of time to prep for this game (against the Kings on Saturday), but, yeah, we will.

We’ll have some discussions on the plane and [Saturday] all day long, and see what we want to do.”

Because what they have been doing just isn’t working.

Sure, the second unit cut it to a five-point game with a minute to go in garbage time, but the rest of the evening was pure embarrassment, as the Hawks manhandled the Bulls, 102-93, and it wasn’t even that close.

When a starting group comes out in the first quarter, turns the ball over eight times, and is outscored 35-13, it seldom is close.

At 21-23 on the season, it looks like a team that has accepted a relaxed style of ball.

“I sure as [heck] hope not,” Hoiberg said of that idea. “With the importance of every game, being where we are right now, fighting for a spot in the playoffs. It’s got to be something inside you that wants to go out and compete, give yourself an opportunity to win basketball games.”

unit, Hoiberg was asked if he thought the situation could have turned really bad, especially after he initially benched the former starter for fiveplus games.

“Well, sure,” Hoiberg said. “It can always go a couple different ways. But I give Rajon a lot of credit for being where he is in his career and all the things he’s accomplished, to accept the role that’s been given to him now.

And again, he’s been terrific for us and again, the biggest thing he’s done is been a mentor to these younger players, and, hopefully, he’ll continue to do that.”

Rock the vote: Butler said Thursday he voted for teammate Dwyane Wade for the Eastern Conference All-Star Team, and although Wade wasn’t named a starter, Butler’s hope was Wade would be named a reserve when the rest of the team was announced Thursday.

Wade, however, didn’t seem concerned either way.

“Nah, I don’t worry about it,” Wade said. “I think it’s great that guys get opportunities to be on there. There are a lot of guys that are having great years, and it means a lot to those guys to get that nod.

I remember my first few times. I’ve been there 12 times. If you get called up, you get called, but I don’t worry about that.”

What it entails? The second-year coach isn’t about to go there, but he’s all behind it. Whatever it is.

“Yeah, there’s a plan,” Hoiberg said Friday, when asked about the current direction of the Bulls. “As far as the rumors, that’s not something I’m going to comment on. Again, things get thrown out there at this time of year.”

A few weeks ago, it was an ESPN report that had the Bulls using back channels to shop Jimmy Butler. The Sun-Times reported then that there was no such activity going on. A source said then that the Bulls were taking calls on Butler, but hadn’t made one since before the June draft.

Now, the same media outlet was at it again, reporting that the Bulls

would be interested in signing Miami big man Chris Bosh for next season if he were to be made a free agent by Miami and become medically cleared. A big if because he is dealing with blood clots and might have to call it a career at the age of 32.

Former Miami Heat teammate Dwyane Wade still is close friends with Bosh, and said the forward/cen- Chris Bosh ter is focused on his health first and foremost, with basketball an afterthought.

“The biggest thing with Chris is the same thing, you know, is his health,” Wade said. “He’s not even playing basketball right now. Basketball is something he loves, and I’m sure somewhere in the back of his mind he would love to be able to do again, but I know his steps, and at this moment it’s not there now. Electric toothbrush worth cost Dear Doctor: My husband, who never met a gadget he didn’t like, wants our family to switch from regular toothbrushes to electric ones. He insists it’s worth the cost because electric toothbrushes do a better job. Is he right, or is this just an excuse for another fun toy?

Dear Reader: Can it be both? Research in the last few years shows your gadget-loving spouse is right – electric toothbrushes do have an edge over the muscle-powered variety when it comes to keeping plaque and gingivitis at bay. Add in the fact kids seem to enjoy the noise and buzz, and for the elderly or those with arthritis these toothbrushes are easier to use, and the electric variety deserves a closer look.

The key to good oral health is a regular routine of brushing your teeth to remove plaque. That’s the soft, sticky film that builds up in the mouth and which contains millions of bacteria. Those bacteria contribute to gum disease and tooth decay, which are the primary causes of tooth loss. Keeping your teeth free of plaque (and keeping the spaces between your teeth free of debris) is essential.

When used properly, the manual toothbrush is a very effective tool. Also, it’s a fraction of the cost of an electric, which starts in the $20 range and goes (way) up from there.

However, in multiple studies in which researchers followed two groups, one that used manual toothbrushes and another group that used the electric variety, differences arose. At the end of three months, the group using an electric toothbrush showed 20 percent better plaque removal and 11 percent less gingivitis than the group using the manual toothbrush. In studies that ran six months and longer, the benefits of the electric toothbrush were even more pronounced.

The differences don’t end there.

Spinning brushes average from 2,500 up to 7,000 strokes a minute, depending on the model. The vibrating variety, also known as sonic brushes, move at up to 40,000 strokes a minute.

Studies show (yes, there are studies for just about everything), when used for six months or longer, the sonic variety of electric toothbrush was better than the rotating type at reducing inflammation due to gingivitis.

Of course, none of these kinds of toothbrush will do much good if they’re used improperly or not at all. Technique and timing are everything. Be sure to spend a full two minutes a session and brush the front, back and chewing surface of each tooth.

Don’t forget about your molars, which can be hard to reach. And note that, for an electric toothbrush, brush heads need to be replaced on a regular basis.

One final thought – with so many small battles to be fought when it comes to children and hygiene, the fact kids (of all ages) seem to enjoy electric toothbrushes might be a point in the plus column.

The sound, motion and sensation, to say nothing of the many fanciful shapes and colors now available in kids’ toothbrushes, achieve the seemingly impossible. That is, they make brushing your teeth fun.

I told him, as a mom, I will talk my son through any problem, whether he agrees with it or not. He just grumbled and went back to sleep.

This still is bothering me. I wonder how my husband will act toward my children if I die first. I worry he will say “suck it up and stop crying” when they need him the most. DEAR ABBY I have known “Kathy” for 13 Jeanne years. Her parPhillips ents moved up the street from us when we were both 2. I don’t remember much when we were younger, but everyone says we had some good times.

We are now 15 and in our first year of high school. My problem is, Kathy has changed. She started going to the same school I did in eighth grade after having some problems with bullying.

The new school didn’t help much. She started hanging out with people who weren’t good influences, and her attitude started changing.

Then we started high school, and now she acts like she’s above me. I’m a polite, quiet and religious person. Kathy swears a lot and doesn’t treat me like a friend anymore. Bridge players understand that minor suits are the poor cousins of the game. They are fine as a strain for a slam (as the columns for the last four days have shown), but when we are bidding only game, we tend to steer full bore into no-trump or a major. However, not always.

Look at the South hand. You open one club, and partner responds three clubs, a game-invitational limit raise.

What would you do now?

You could shut your eyes and rebid three no-trump, but here you would immediately lose five heart tricks. Instead, investigate stoppers at the three-level. Rebid three diamonds, which says that you have at least one stopper in this suit, but are wide open in one of the majors.

When North rebids three spades, he indicates values there but not in hearts. (If he had stoppers in both majors, he would rebid three notrump.) Now you know to avoid three no-trump and sign off in five clubs.

The auction has told West what to lead. He can even choose a low heart, underleading an ace at trick one! The defenders take two heart tricks, then, say, shift to a diamond.

You must draw trumps without loss. That will be no problem if they are 2-1, but what if they are 3-0?

If West has all three, you have no chance. But in case East does, start with dummy’s club king. When West discards a spade (playing a black card on a black card, hoping you are not paying proper attention), you take the club finesse, draw East’s last trump and claim.
