Bistro opens with blast from the past The opening act was “Singin and Swingin” as DeKalb’s newest night spot was inaugurated Friday at the Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center.

The featured combo was Liz Hoppenworth and Charlie McCormick, who sang and played oldies but goodies to a full house of mostly septuagenarians and octogenarians.

The new bistro just received its liquor license this month, and bartenders are being trained to meet the needs of the senior set.

I suggested to one barkeep named Cassie that they should stock some old-time favorites since many patrons were probably brought up in homes like mine, where Mogen David wine and hard cider were the only spirits available.

For those desiring a nonalcoholic beverage, there’s always prune juice on the rocks.

In my college days, hanging out at Andy’s Tavern with the student newspaper gang, headed by editors Bob Rader and Jim Price, I learned how to order Seven and Seven. I used to nurse a couple of those all night, and it is still my favorite.

Getting back to the bistro, three of DeKalb’s finest made a courtesy stop after receiving a tip to check IDs for possible “overage drinking.”

AUTONOMY AHEAD NIU engineering students talk future of robotics

DeKALB – Robots pique public interest when they are built to have human qualities, but those who build and study robotics in DeKalb believe the robots of tomorrow will come in many forms and have a broad range of real-world jobs.

At Northern Illinois University, members of NIU Robotics build robots to enter into contests each year. The robots compete to finish tasks such as selecting, lifting and placing items, or connecting pieces of pipe under water.

The tasks may seem simple, but designing a machine to accomplish them helps participants learn the mechanics of robots that help with important jobs that humans cannot do alone.

“The whole competition is really a facade for people learning how to build robots that can do things in the real world,” said Joel Rushton, junior mechanical engineering major and president of NIU Robotics.

Rushton said every task he and his teammates build a robot to perform has a real-world analog, whether it’s disarming a bomb or closing a valve somewhere too dangerous for humans to work.

“Maybe we’ll be putting a PVC thing on top of another thing,” he said.

“But it’s supposed to be like an oil well that’s under water that’s broken, and you’re trying to fix it by putting this cap on it and sealing it.”

A humanoid robot named Pepper made headlines recently for its happy demeanor while dancing, posing for selfies and directing patrons around a San Francisco mall.

Although Pepper represents ambitions of personal robot companions and assistants, experts have said the robot is more amusing than practical for the time being, according to The Associated Press.

Rushton said he expects robot companions will become more common in the future.

“Right now they have it, but it’s kind of weird; they’re not really perfect simulations of pets or humans,” he said. “But I think as time goes on, it wouldn’t be uncommon to see someone with a robotic dog, and you wouldn’t think any different of them than [if they had] a real dog.”

“There’s so much to do with robotics,” he said. “People didn’t notice washing machines when they first came around, but now those are so close to being robots that they’re practically robots.”

NIU Robotics has won innovative design awards for their robots, including Northern Artificial Intelligence.

NAI was the first autonomous robot entered into the Midwestern Robotics Design Competition, which is held annually at the University of Illinois, Rushton said.

It has been an ongoing project for about five years; students equip NAI with different parts to fit the task at hand.

“This year it’s picking up soccer balls; last year it was putting golf balls into bins,” Rushton said. “So you can imagine, the huge size difference means you need a completely different system for moving things around.”

Jacob Klein, senior mechanical engineering major and vice president of

NIU Robotics, said he expects autonomy will be a focus in the future development of robotics, with more focus on ventures such as Waymo, Google’s self-driving car company.

“You have the car drive itself so you can do other things while you’re on your hourlong commute to work,” Klein said. “I feel like autonomy is going to be a big thing, to have robots that can control themselves rather than having a human tell it what to do.”

Thomas Corbett, sophomore mechanical engineering major, said he forsees robotics being an integral part of space exploration in the coming decades.

“China is talking about going to Mars and actually forming colonies,” Corbett said. “I feel like robotics will end up playing a huge role in making that a sustainable environment to live in and helping people in those situations.”

Robotics also is capturing the interest of younger students, including those at DeKalb High School, where

the DHS Crowbotics Team provides students with hands-on experience with designing, prototyping and building robots. Some members of NIU Robotics mentor the students as well.

Adviser Denise Flemming said students on the team also enter their robots into competitions, which gives them a sense of accomplishment and teaches teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving and cooperation.

She said about 20 students are involved in the club, which was started in 2015 when a couple of students expressed interest in gaining hands-on engineering experience.

The club meets at Huntley Middle School and has received donations from companies such as Monsanto, Best Buy and 3M to help pay for materials and competition costs.

“Giving students the opportunity to participate in building something that will help someone to do something. It brings so many opportunities for the kids and opens up a lot of doors,” Flemming said.

DeKalb High School student killed in crash Man charged with aggravated DUI, reckless homicide

eolson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A St. Charles man is facing multiple charges after a four-car crash Tuesday that killed a DeKalb High School student and left many in the local educational community in mourning.

Johnathon R. Ode, 18, was in his senior year at DeKalb, where both his father and stepmother work. DeKalb School Johnathon R. District 428 Board Pres- Ode ident Victoria Newport called Ode’s death “a tragic loss to the District 428 school family and the DeKalb, Malta and Cortland communities.”

“We send our deepest condolences to the Ode family,” she said. “District 428 Student Services personnel have been available all day today to support our students as well as our staff, and they will continue to be available to students and staff as necessary. Additionally, a therapy dog was in the high school today to help comfort our

students and staff.”

Ode previously lived in Sandwich and attended Sandwich High School.

His father, Stephen Ode, is a science teacher at DeKalb High School, and his stepmother, Katie Ode, also works there.

Prosecutors have charged John A. Yanni III, 25, of the 100 block of South 18th Street in St. Charles, with aggravated driving under the influence and reckless homicide in connection with the crash. If convicted of the most serious charge, aggravated DUI causing death, he could face three to seven years in prison.

The crash occurred about 7:15 p.m.

Tuesday on Route 38 east of Peace Road, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. Police said Yanni was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup west on Route 38 when his vehicle crossed the highway’s center line.

Yanni’s truck first hit a 1995 Ford F-150 pickup driven by Rich J. River, 19, of Cortland, then collided head-on with Ode’s vehicle, a 2000 Ford Taurus, sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said.

After the collision, a 2002 Hyundai Elantra driven by Scott McAdams, 36, of DeKalb, rear-ended Yanni’s truck, police said.

A judge approved a warrant for Yanni’s arrest Wednesday afternoon, according to court documents, but he remained at Kishwaukee Hospital late Wednesday afternoon. Hospital officials would not provide information about his condition.

Evan Cortez, 23, of Elgin, was a passenger in Ode’s vehicle. He was taken to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford with serious injuries.

Both Ode and Cortez were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, police said. Cortez remained at St. Anthony’s on Wednesday evening.

River and McAdams were treated for minor injuries, police said.

Katie Bryant, River’s mother, said her son was driving east on Route 38 when he saw another truck coming toward him. He was able to pull over to avoid a more serious accident.

Bryant said her son’s vehicle was clipped on the driver’s side. He then called 911 when he looked back and saw more vehicles were involved in the crash, Bryant said.

“I feel very sorry for the family of the gentleman who lost his life,” she

said. “I was lucky enough to fold my child’s clothes this morning knowing he’s OK.” At DeKalb High School, Johnathon Ode was a member of the Gamers Guild and the Outdoor Adventure Club. He is survived by parents Stephen and Katie Ode; two brothers, Gerald Becker of Sandwich and Louis Ode of DeKalb; grandparents, Richard and Marlene Becker of Sandwich, and Robert and Patricia Collins of Aurora; stepgrandparents, Harlan and Jean Hawkins of Cortland; and his aunts, uncles and cousins.

His mother, Marsha, died in 2008.

A memorial service is set for 3 p.m.

Saturday at Anderson Funeral Home, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb. Steve Saunders of Millbrook United Methodist Church will officiate. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Saturday until the time of the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorials can be made to the Johnathon R. Ode Memorial Fund, addressed to the Ode family in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, IL 60115.

County Board OKs economic development resolution

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Board unanimously approved a resolution to proceed with an initiative to develop a comprehensive economic development strategy for the county during Wednesday’s meeting.

This document is meant to be a guide for all countywide individuals and organizations to have meaningful discussions on how to best promote economic development.

By using feedback from a series of

countywide data collection efforts last year, the board sought to further explore priority areas for economic improvement based on factors including project feasibility, available resources and potential partners.

The board partnered with groups such as the DeKalb County Economic Development Corp., the DeKalb County Community Foundation, the DeKalb County Farm Bureau and Northern Illinois University’s Center for Governmental Studies to develop a vision for economic development.

The resolution called for these

groups and other community partners to serve as a steering committee for the development of this document.

Additionally, a planning committee composed of the DCEDC board of directors will seek input from public and private sectors throughout the county so the economic strategy satisfies the needs of all stakeholders involved.

Meanwhile, the governmental studies center will facilitate the planning process, provide research to the DCEDC committee and write out the plan based on committee feedback, all while being guided by a steering com-

mittee made up of partnering organizations.

Before the proposal is drafted, there will be three sessions devoted to the plan over two to three months with additional data analysis and research being conducted in between. The plan is meant to be finalized by the end of August and is not to exceed $30,000 in costs.

A $20,000 grant from the DeKalb County Community Foundation is to be used for the development of this comprehensive economic development strategy.

JOHNATHON R. ODE Born: September 23, 1998 Died: January 17, 2017

Johnathon R. Ode, 18, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Tuesday, January 17, 2017, as the result of an auto accident.

Born September 23, 1998, in Sandwich, Illinois, he was the son of Stephen and Marsha Ode. Johnathon was a senior at DeKalb High School where he was a member of the Gamers Guild and the Outdoor Adventure Club.

He is survived by his parents, Stephen and Katie Ode; two brothers, Gerald Becker of Sandwich, Louis Ode of Dekalb; grandparents, Richard and Marlene Becker of Sandwich, Robert and Patricia Collins of Aurora; stepgrandparents, Harlan and Jean Hawkins of Cortland; and his aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Marsha in 2008.

The Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb, with Steve Saunders of Millbrook United Methodist Church officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Aurora. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services, Saturday, at the funeral home.

Seven are appointed by the governor, and one is a student trustee elected annually by students. The board’s duties are to “operate, manage, control and maintain Northern Illinois University.”

Bylaws require that NIU trustees appoint a chairman, vice chairman and secretary each year. When the chairman’s position is vacated, the vice chairman fills the role. That means John Butler, who preceded Strauss as chairman, once again will

take the post.

Strauss was one of four board members whose terms expire this week.

Rauner is expected to appoint successors for them soon. State law provides for board members whose terms expire to continue to serve until their appointed successors are named and confirmed by the state Senate.

The chairman runs board meetings and also appoints members to committees. With Strauss’ resignation, Butler will be chairman until July 1.

Leland man faces charges for selling cocaine to undercover cops

On Sept. 1, the agent spent $500 to buy 10.2 grams of cocaine from Fuller at the same location. Audio of both deals was recorded after the agency received a court-approved wire tap, according to court records.

Fuller, who police described as a low-level dealer in the Sandwich area, was the target of the investigation, said Master Sgt. J. Stavola of the Kendall County Cooperative Police Assistance Team, a drug task force run by the Illinois State Police.

Judge Robbin Stuckert released Fuller on his signature Wednesday after a bond hearing. He didn’t have to post cash bail.

The 19th century in the U.S. was a time of invention. The patent office at first required a working model of an invention, but later, just accurate drawings and details were enough. Victorians loved gadgets and specialty tools. There were hundreds of patents granted for apple peelers, lighting devices, corkscrews, fruit jars, washing machines, washboards, toasters, napkin rings and cooking pots, and today there are collector clubs for almost every one of these specialties. An unusual all-wooden washboard was sold in 2016

by Hess Auction Group. It has threaded wooden rollers instead of a corrugated metal or glass rubbing surface. The maple rollers rolled in opposite directions and, according to the ads, the "screw threads do all the work." The first wooden rollers were made by the Hubbard Brothers, and the Mother Hubbard Roller Washboard was a popular item sold door-to-door in the early 1900s. The washboards were no longer made after 1935, because they were not needed if you had an electric washing machine. At the 2016 auction, a Mother Hubbard Patent Roller Washboard sold for $195. *** Q: I'd like to know the value of a crocheted bedspread my greatgrandmother made about 1910. It is made of squares with a rose in the center of each square. 2 proposals address Illinois’ minimum wage The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Legislature is preparing to tackle two proposals that would raise the minimum wage in the state.

Senate members have proposed raising the minimum wage, which is $8.25 an hour, by 50 cents each year until reaching $11 in 2021 as part of a bipartisan budget package, the Herald and Review reported. A House bill is looking to bump up minimum wage to $15 an hour

by October. About 63 percent of voters were in favor of raising the minimum wage for adults to $10 in a 2014 advisory memorandum. The Senate approved bills in 2014 and 2015 to raise the minimum wage to $11 by 2019, but the House hasn’t approved an increase.

The new Senate bill, proposed by Maywood Democratic Sen. Kimberly Lightford, is being considered along with a “grand bargain” on the Illinois budget that includes tax increases, spending cuts, new casino licenses and

other proposals. Republican and Democratic leaders in the Senate have said lawmakers from both parties will support all the pieces of the package.

Chicago Democratic Rep. Mary Flowers, the sponsor of the House bill, said raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour is necessary because some employees must work two jobs to support their families. She said the Senate’s proposal of a minimum wage of $11 an hour isn’t sufficient for people’s basic needs.

State attorney general alleges fraud at student loan company

CHICAGO – Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office is suing the nation’s largest student loan company, alleging unfair and deceptive practices with lending and debt collection.

The lawsuit filed Wednesday in Cook County seeks restitution and penalties. It names Navient Corporation and subsidiaries, including Sallie Mae Bank.

The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau filed a separate lawsuit Wednesday, alleging Navient made it harder to repay loans by giving bad information, processing payments incorrectly and failing to address complaints.

Madigan alleged that the companies knowingly put students in expensive and risky loans they knew would fail. Madigan estimates tens of thousands of Illinoisans were affected. She said it’s unknown how much money was involved.

Chicago colleges to host 1st federal cybersecurity training

CHICAGO – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the federal Department of Defense hope a new program will turn the city into a place where college students can learn how to out-hack computer hackers.

Emanuel and a top U.S. Department of Defense official introduced a six-month pilot “cybersecurity boot camp” at one of the city’s community colleges Wednesday.

They said it is the first such partnership between a community college and the federal agency.

Trial begins for man accused of promoting sex with kids

EDWARDSVILLE – A trial is underway to determine if a man accused of promoting sexual relations with children as a religious right should be declared sexually dangerous and institutionalized.

James Lopes is charged with three counts of grooming for allegedly handing out cards directing people to online videos of him promoting sexual relations with children in April, The Belleville News-Democrat reported. He also faces several misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct and trespassing. Prosecutors allege that he approached young girls and declared he was on a “mini date” with one of them.

The felony charges are on hold pending the trial to determine if Lopes should be declared sexually dangerous. The jury was chosen Tuesday.

Prosecutor Kathleen Nolan said that if the jury rules against him, Lopes would be committed to the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections in a facility

Bowling team on school bus that rolled; minor injuries

JUSTICE – Officials said a school bus that rolled over on Interstate 294 in Illinois was carrying members of a high school bowling team.

Minor injuries were reported. Authorities said the driver of the bus, who wasn’t identified, suffered a seizure as he drove the bus Tuesday in the lanes traveling south on the interstate outside Chicago. State police said there were 12 female Resurrection College Prep High School students and a coach aboard.

The driver and two passengers were taken to hospitals.

Coach Caryl King, who was on the bus, told WMAQ-TV that the bus was taking the team to an area high school tournament.

Joliet robber who shot at teller, customer sentenced

CHICAGO – A judge has sentenced a 28-year-old Joliet man to 29 years in prison for firing at and narrowly missing a teller and customer during a 2014 bank robbery.

A statement Tuesday from the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago said Carl P. Wilson pocketed $20,000 from the robbery at Orland Park’s First Midwest Bank. He was arrested nine days later during a traffic stop in his hometown of Joliet.

Prosecutors said Wilson entered the bank wearing a cloth across his face. He jumped the counter, cursing as he yelled at a teller to hand him the money.

Wilson pleaded guilty to armed bank robbery, discharging a firearm during a robbery and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Tuesday’s statement said a Chicago federal judge sentenced Wilson last week.

An anonymous tip two days before Christmas led authorities to Kimberly and Kelly Yates and to Waldberg, their 69-year-old mother, state police said. Waldberg was arrested Monday. Kelly was 10 months old and Kimberly was 3 years old when they disappeared.

The case raises questions about Waldberg’s motivations. Friends who attended the hearing suggested that there was a pattern of domestic violence by her husband.

Trump’s EPA pick says climate change is real

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump’s choice to head the Environmental Protection Agency said Wednesday that climate change is real, breaking with both the president-elect and his own past statements.

In response to questions from Democrats during his Senate confirmation hearing, Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt said he disagreed with Trump’s earlier claims that global warming is a hoax created by the Chinese to harm the economic competitiveness of the United States.

“I do not believe climate change is a hoax,” Pruitt said.

The 48-year-old Republican has previously cast doubt on the extensive body of scientific evidence showing that the planet is warming and manmade carbon emissions are to blame.

In a 2016 opinion article, Pruitt suggested that the debate over global warming “is far from settled” and he claimed that “scientists continue to disagree about the degree and extent of global warming and its connection to the actions of mankind.”

At the hearing before the Senate Energy and Public Works Committee, Pruitt conceded that human activity contributes “in some manner” to climate change. He continued, however, to question whether the burning of fossil fuels is the primary reason, and refused to say whether sea levels are rising.

Pruitt’s testimony came shortly after NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a joint statement affirming that 2016 was officially the hottest year in recorded history.

Studies show the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have decreased in mass, while the world’s oceans have risen on average nearly 7 inches in the past century.

Pressed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., to answer in detail about his beliefs about climate change, Pruitt responded that his personal opinion was “immaterial” to how he would enforce environmental laws.

In his current post, Pruitt joined a multistate lawsuit opposing the Obama administration’s plan to limit planet-warming carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants.

Pruitt also sued over the EPA’s recent expansion of water bodies regulated under the Clean Water Act. It has been opposed by industries that would be forced to clean up polluted wastewater.

The lawsuits are among at least eight pending cases Pruitt has joined against the agency he is in line to lead.

Under questioning from Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass., Pruitt said he has “every willingness to recuse” himself on a case-by-case basis if directed to do so by the EPA’s ethics office. Markey said that was not enough to reassure Americans of his objectivity, adding that Pruitt should commit to a blanket recusal.

Pruitt said that if he were confirmed by the GOP-run Senate, he would work with states and industry to return

the federal watchdog to what he described as its proper role.

“Environmental regulations should not occur in an economic vacuum,” Pruitt said. “We can simultaneously pursue the mutual goals of environmental protection and economic growth.”

Environmentalists opposing Pruitt’s nomination cite his cozy relationships with oil and gas industry executives who have donated to his political campaigns.

As the hearing got underway, shouting could be heard from people who were not allowed in. The room accommodated fewer than 100 people; most seats were taken by congressional staff, reporters and others who were allowed in early. Only a few seats remained for the public.

One woman was quickly wrestled out of the room by three police officers as she pulled out a roll of yellow crime scene tape and shouted “We don’t want EPA gutted!”

Later, a group of coal miners wearing hard hats were allowed in to show support for Pruitt. Trump has pledged to bring back tens of thousands of lost coal mining jobs once inaugurated, although he has not yet detailed how.

OUR VIEW: DONALD TRUMP INAUGURATION

Hoping for huge success Donald Trump was not our choice for president.

We expressed doubts about his qualifications, his temperament, his fitness to lead the free world.

With a recent CNN poll showing Trump about to enter office with a historically low public approval rating, it is clear that others share those concerns.

Trump, as he has persisted in using Twitter to lash out at anyone who attacks or angers him, has done little to assuage those concerns.

However, on Friday, Trump will be sworn in as our nation’s 45th president. Although his methods have been unorthodox and at times, grating, if he succeeds in accomplishing some of his goals, Americans will be better off.

Trump has vowed to make better deals for America, to speak for the forgotten man and pressure American companies into bringing and keeping jobs in this country. Changes to the tax code that would lower business tax rates to 15 percent while eliminating most deductions and applying a 10 percent tax on profits held off-shore that are returned to the U.S. are part of this equation.

Another part is increased spending on America’s infrastructure and a potentially problematic pledge to slap a 35 percent tariff on vehicles and some other imported goods.

Trump also has pledged to repeal some federal regulations on business to enable economic expansion. In all, he pledges to create an economic growth rate of 3.5 to 4 percent a year and create 25 million new jobs in the next decade.

After seven years of feeble economic growth after the Great Recession’s end in 2009, we are eager for a real economic expansion. If Trump can deliver it, we suspect that most working people will be willing to look past the things he writes on Twitter.

Trump also has pledged to make immigration reforms that will secure our borders and our safety.

His Day One pledge to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it is clearly part of this – though it seems both unnecessary and simplistic when compared with real legislative reforms that could address the problem.

There is also his recent promise to repeal the Affordable Care Act and still offer “insurance for everybody,” a pledge that is at odds with Republicans in Congress.

As we brace for four years of a Trump presidency, we are certain there will be more cringe-worthy moments. However, the American people wanted a political outsider who could deliver results.

If Trump turns out to be as effective as he is unorthodox, we will be better off. As his fortunes are tied, in some ways, to that of our nation at large, we hope for his success.

Judge holds Pence to open-records law

The day his term as Indiana’s 50th governor ended, Vice President-elect Mike Pence got a going-away present from the Indiana Court of Appeals. But it came, thankfully, with some crucial qualifiers.

A long-running legal battle over the governor’s decision to deny a 2014 open-records request was resolved in Pence’s favor by a three-judge panel.

By a 2-1 vote, the court upheld a lower court’s ruling that Pence acted properly when he withheld some documents that had been sought by Indianapolis attorney William Groth under the Indiana Access to Public Records Act. The court agreed with Pence’s argument that the documents, which related to Indiana’s decision to join the state of Texas in a legal challenge to an immigration order

by President Barack Obama, were legal working papers that were exempt from public disclosure.

Judge Edward Najam wrote that one of the documents the governor decided to withhold, a “white paper” on legal strategy that was prepared by a Texas offi-

cial, “is exactly the type of record that may be excluded from public access under APRA.” The court ruled that the governor’s decision to redact some information from legal invoices related to the decision was similarly within the law.

This is the way the law is supposed to work. The Indiana public access counselor, Luke Britt, and a superior court judge had previously come to the same conclusion.

But Pence’s legal team sought to go further, citing an Indiana Supreme Court decision last year that has made the legislature virtually exempt from its own open-records requirements. That case also involved Groth.

Last April, the Indiana Supreme Court effectively washed its hands of ruling on Groth’s request, contending that though the open-records law applied to the legislature, the court should not be determining whether the lawmakers’ definition of a “work product” was appropriate because of the doctrine of separation of powers. (Legislators who profess to be in favor of open government

still must address the problem that ruling has created.)

Pence’s attorneys argued that the high court’s concern with separation of powers meant that the governor should be making his own decisions about when and how the open-records law applies to him. But in a powerfully written opinion, Najam rejected that argument.

“The governor’s argument would, in effect, render APRA meaningless as applied to him and his staff,” Najam wrote.

“APRA does not provide for any such absolute privilege, and the separation of powers doctrine does not require it. We reject the Governor’s assertion ...”

Pence’s attempt to claim exemption from the open-records law was puzzling; he has generally been a strong champion of open government. In any case, new Gov. Eric Holcomb has an opportunity to reset the clock by indicating he accepts the court’s decision and intends to live within the letter and spirit of Indiana’s open-records law.

To the Editor: My wife and I are self-employed, and therefore we pay for our health care.

Our Blue Cross Blue Shield premium increased 42 percent for 2017 ($1,430 to $2,030 a month).

While exploring the BCBS options, I was asked to enter DeKalb County or Kane County for our 60178 zip code.

The Kane County rates were 20 percent cheaper, so I called BCBS since all of our “health care” is east of Route 47.

I was advised that I must use the county associated with my address, which happens to be DeKalb County.

I can respect the Affordable Care Act is still a work in progress, and “bite my

tongue” on the 42 percent price hike, but ... can someone please explain to me why our monthly premium is 20 percent higher than the same zip code in Kane County (Burlington) ... yet Kishwaukee Hospital is considered out-of-network for us?

One would think that if Blue Cross Blue Shield forces us to select DeKalb County, that DeKalb County health care would also be included.

Nope. We have to drive to Kane County to be in-network.

Something stinks, with Blue Cross Blue Shield in DeKalb County, and it isn’t farms!

Staff number, quality key to nursing home success

To the Editor: I am writing this in response to the letter to the editor by William Klein that appeared in the Daily Chronicle on Tuesday, Jan. 17. I have spent 30 years in long-term and rehab care as a director of nursing and an administrator. Mr. Klein is exactly on target. The largest problem always was and still is staffing.

Yes, it is wonderful to have a beautiful facility and all the perks, but when it comes down to it, the care provided in a clean, comfortable setting is what it is all about. The quality and number of staff makes all the difference in determining whether a facility is what you would want for your relative or friend.

The ratio of staff to residents is critical.

Being a CNA or a nurse in this setting can often be overwhelming. I know how much is required of a CNA or a nurse in one eight-hour shift, and I know the only reason they go to work day after day is because they care.

We all hear stories of abuse and neglect in long-term facilities, and my experience tells me that most often this occurs because of lack of staff or lack of training for staff.

I can understand a facility needing improvements and updates, but let us do what is reasonable and worry more about the staff.

Twice in recent days, Donald Trump has made seemingly off-thecuff remarks about policy that took his Republican allies in Congress by surprise.

Over the weekend, he told the Washington Post that he was in the final stages of drawing up a health plan that would provide “insurance for everybody” but with “much lower deductibles” than the Affordable Care Act. He also opined to the Wall Street Journal that a key provision of the Republican plan to reform business taxation was “too complicated.”

I’ve got four thoughts about these comments and what they might tell us about how a Trump administration will govern.

One: Trump’s remarks weren’t well-informed.

If Trump’s people are working on a health care plan, it’s news to congressional Republicans, think-tank experts on health care, and even some of Trump’s own people.

Trump also makes it sound as though his health plan will involve no trade-offs: Everyone will pay less for more benefits. No plan can live up to that promise.

Trump didn’t appear to understand the business-tax issue he discussed. Congressional Republicans want to change the corporate in-

DeKALB – The offense for the Northern Illinois women’s basketball team finally looked human.

The usually high-scoring Huskies struggled from the floor and suffered their first conference loss in a 84-55 defeat to Akron on Wednesday afternoon at the NIU Convocation Center.

The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Huskies.

“Obviously, that’s not one to be proud of,” NIU coach Lisa Carlsen said. “(Akron) did a good job of trying to keep us uncomfortable, and once we were hesitant offensively, I think you saw us press a little bit.”

NIU, which came into the game averaging 90.2 points a game, shot a season-worst 33 percent from the field and shot 24 percent (8 for 33) from beyond the arc en route to scoring a season low. The Huskies’ previous low was in a 77-73 victory Saturday over Toledo.

It’s also the first home loss of the season for the Huskies (12-5, 5-1 MAC West) in seven games.

NIU sophomore Mikayla Voigt scored a team-high 15 points and made three 3-pointers, freshman Janae Poisson had 14 points off the bench, and sophomore Courtney Woods added 11 in the loss.

“Credit to Akron, they put on a [heck] of a show,” Woods said. “They shot the crap out of the ball, and I don’t think we knew how to react to that because I think we felt like we could walk in and come out with a 20-point win.”

The Zips (8-9, 1-5 MAC East) led for nearly the entire game – the Huskies’ largest lead came when Woods connected on a 3-pointer to open the scoring in the first minute – and had five players in double figures, led by Hannah Plybon, who had 20 points and connected five times from 3-point range.

Akron finished with 18 offensive rebounds, translating into 22 second-chance points, and made 14 3s.

It’s funny, you look at those stats and look how poorly we shot the ball, we didn’t get to the foul line and we didn’t even knock down the ones when we did get to the foul line. It’s just so uncharacteristic of us offensively.”

By the numbers: NIU senior Ally Lehman, who came into the game averaging 17 points a game, was scoreless on 0-for-8 shooting before fouling out with 3:32 remaining. It was the

first time she was held scoreless since Jan. 20, 2016 – a 58-43 loss to Bowling Green.

Beyond the stats: There were plenty of rambunctious young fans in attendance, with NIU hosting around 1,000 students from seven area elementary schools as part of Education Day. Many of the fans held up homemade signs supporting the Huskies.

They said it: “Unfortunately, when you’re built how we are and we shoot the way we did, that’s not a good formula for success when you go 8 of 33 from 3-point range against a zone,” Carlsen said.

Up next: The Huskies host Miami (Ohio) at 1 p.m. Saturday, and the Zips host Western Michigan at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Far from home, Panarin finds family in U.S.

mlazerus@suntimes.com DENVER — Decked out in white Blackhawks jerseys with their own last names emblazoned on the backs, more than a dozen proud papas watched from a suite in a corner of the Pepsi Center as their sons rallied for a spirited 6-4 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night.

Artemi Panarin’s dad wasn’t among them. Panarin’s parents split when he was young, and he was raised by his grandparents. It was his grandfather who woke up at 5 a.m. every day to drive him an hour to hockey practice as a 5-year-old. It was his grandfather who instilled in him the love of the sport. And it was his grandfather who – for financial reasons, for practical reasons, for sporting reasons – sent Panarin an hour away to live and play in a sports-centric foster home/boarding school at age 10.

But just because Panarin doesn’t have his father along on the Hawks’ dads trip, doesn’t mean he doesn’t have family.

“It just turned out that way, that I didn’t have a father in my life, because my parents divorced early on,” Panarin said through an interpreter.

“I didn’t have a father to take with me, so I took a friend.”

That friend is also Panarin’s interpreter – 39-year-old Andrew Aksyonov. Aksyonov and his wife, Yulia Mikhaylova, are St. Petersburg natives now living in Chicago. They were contacted by some friends with

Panarin’s KHL team, SKA St. Petersburg, to help out Panarin last summer, just until his Russian-speaking, American-born friend Viktor Tikhonov arrived in Chicago.

It was supposed to be for just a couple of weeks. But a year and a half later, Panarin is godfather to their two children, and they’re basically family – kindred spirits who know well the challenges Panarin faced when he arrived

in America without a friend in the hemisphere, and unable to speak a lick of English.

When Aksyonov arrived in, of all places, Nebraska in 1994 as a 17-year-old exchange student from St. Petersburg, he had a vision of America. Omaha wasn’t it.

“It was not what I expected, because my idea of America was skyscrapers and, from watching movies, guys riding Harleys,” Aksyonov said with a laugh. “And Nebraska was different.”

Everything was different: the language, the culture, the social norms. The simplest of tasks became arduous and confounding. Panarin experienced this, too, when he first came to Chicago in the summer of 2015. While Chicago fit the American image, Panarin didn’t speak the language at all. He didn’t know where to shop for groceries. He didn’t know how to get an apartment.

He didn’t know where to get a nice pair of shoes fixed.

But Panarin was never fazed.

“I felt pretty comfortable from the start, from the getgo,” Panarin said. “My life

turned out in such a way that, from the age of about 10, I was living on my own. So there aren’t any places where I’m not comfortable. I was good from the start.”

Having Aksyonov and Mikhaylova around – to hang out with, to bounce ideas off, to speak to in his native tongue – eased the transition. They helped him find an apartment.

They helped him get a car.

They helped him in any way he needed help.

“No matter how great the city is, if you’re there by yourself with no one to go to, just as a human being, it’s lonely,” Aksyonov said. “Nobody likes that. So we tried to be that little bit of comfort that he could have, that little bit of home.”

A year and a half later, Panarin is more comfortable than ever. He can converse in decent English with his teammates, he can decipher Joel Quenneville’s barking on the bench, and he knows where to shop, where to eat, how to get around.

He’s still a Russian kid in a strange land. But he’s happy.

He’s comfortable. And he’s not alone.

The heavyweights are out on the floor, the lightweights have butts on the chairs.

Darwinism at its finest.

But the last four minutes of an NBA game? That’s a look into the soul. Heart, confidence, determination, swagger, all of it out there for everyone to see.

The name on the back of the jersey is just another name for the first 44 minutes. Those last 240 seconds is where that name could become legend.

“Those last four minutes is where you really put your mark on the game,’’ veteran Bulls guard Dwyane Wade said.

“I know coming up, that’s what I tried to do, and that’s where he’s at right now.’’

The “he’’ Wade was referring to was Jimmy Butler. The imprint Butler’s try-

ing to make? To be an elite closer. The guy that carries the weight of winning or losing.

A pass/fail test that allows a franchise to either build around you or simply make the decision to rebuild over you.

What Butler has shown so far this season is that he not only ac- Jimmy Butler cepts that pressure, but he’s delivering.

“I think he’s had enough game this year and done it where he has to be considered an elite closer,’’ Wade said. “In today’s game, obviously you look at a guy like [Boston’s] Isaiah Thomas in the fourth quarter overall, and he’s the top. But when you look at those guys that do it in the last couple minutes, Jimmy is right there.’’

Entering Wednesday night’s games, fourth-quarter dominance does start

with Thomas. The high-octane point guard was averaging a league-best 10.1 points in the fourth quarter, hitting 49.5 percent from the field. Butler was tied for sixth, averaging 7.2 points in the fourth and shooting 44 percent.

Ahead of Butler were of course Thomas, followed by Russell Westbrook, Kyle Lowry, DeMarcus Cousins and then Kawhi Leonard. In other words, it’s not the kiddie table.

“Go to what you know and don’t force anything,’’ Butler said of his mentality in closing time. “Take the right shots and be confident.

“I work on it enough where I know what to do if a team tries to take something away. But if you bring two players to me I’m going to hit the open guy. That’s what the game is telling you to do.’’

What’s different about Butler, however, is the path he has taken to become that closer. It’s an interesting question to dissect, actually. Is the art of closing

born in the DNA or learned?

“I think there’s both,’’ coach Fred Hoiberg said. “Jimmy, obviously where he came into this league, is a guy that learned from some great pros. Now he’s gotten to the point where he’s one of the best in the game, one of the best twoway players. A guy that you can also put up there as one of the top closers with what he’s done this year and how he’s added that to his game.

“I would say that more often than not it is an innate quality.’’

It was for Wade, who admittedly said that he was born with it. Maybe that makes Butler even more impressive.

Maybe it was inside of him, but he had to wait and learn how to get it out.

“He’s learned it,’’ Wade said. “His toughness, his mentality is there, but being in those situations – making those shots, missing those shots, whatever it may be – that’s the thing he’s learning.’’

Does NFL have hiring issues?

THE WAY WE HEAR IT

Several individuals we’ve talked to in recent days who work at the highest levels of NFL team front offices have voiced concerns about the way head coaches are being hired around the league today.

One team executive told us: “Listen, Sean McVay may prove to be the second coming of Vince Lombardi, but is he really anywhere near as qualified to be a head coach today as [Josh] McDaniels, [Kyle] Shanahan, [Matt] Patricia or [Todd] Haley?”

This particular individual believes McVay got the Rams job because he was available immediately while the coordinators he rattled off were all still working with their current teams in the playoffs.

He was not alone in his concerns with the system, and it seems pretty obvious the doubters have a point.

But they are also in the minority of the larger group of execs we queried on the topic. While every team or league exec we talked to indicated they felt the top prospects aren’t getting jobs this year, the majority pointed out there’s really nothing wrong with the system and nothing that can be done about it.

While the top assistants working for the Patriots, Falcons, Steelers and Packers all clearly have not had the same chance – you can really include Texans, Seahawks, Cowboys and Chiefs assistants too since five of the six available head coaching jobs were filled before the divisional playoff games – as coaches not in the playoffs to pursue top jobs, what would we have them do?

These coaches have a commitment to focus 100 percent on their current club’s playoff push, and any time away from that focus to pursue another job would be unfair to their current team.

The problem most voiced to us by top team execs is NFL owners and some general managers appearing to have severe cases of hyper activity when it comes to hiring a new coach.

There is a perception among many involved in the hiring process that the hiring of the best coaches is a competition for the top talent and that moving too slowly leads to inferior choices.

While that is pretty clearly not the case,

NFL owners tend to look like a bunch of six-year-olds in a game of musical chairs, grabbing chairs while the music is still playing to avoid coming in last.

Just two seasons ago, there were seven head-coaching openings around the league The Broncos, Bears, 49ers, Raiders, Jets and Bills all moved quickly to hire Gary Kubiak, John Fox, Jim Tomsula, Jack Del Rio, Todd Bowles and Rex Ryan, respectively.

The Atlanta Falcons waited patiently and hired Dan Quinn after his Seattle Sean Seahawks team lost to McVay New England in the Super Bowl.

Kubiak (who did bring the Broncos a Super Bowl), Tomsula and Ryan are already gone and Bowles and Fox will start the 2017 season on shakier ground than any other coaches in the league.

Of the six quick-trigger hires, only Del Rio has worked out while the patient Falcons will be rewarded for waiting for Quinn, one of the top young talents available, with an appearance in the NFC title game this Sunday.

While we sincerely hope that each of this year’s new head coaches are tremendously successful, it will be interesting to see exactly what they accomplish between their hiring and the Super Bowl that made it impossible for their bosses to wait on seemingly more qualified candidates.

Obviously, there is a domino effect of sorts as not only do top head coaching prospects get hired quickly, they then begin the race to hire the best coordinators and position coaches.

One of the concerns owners share is if they wait for a head guy, how thinned out will the pool of available assistants be once they are able to pull the trigger? But this fear again is overrated.

The top head coach prospects have already done groundwork, put out feelers and secured some commitments from assistants before they actually get their jobs.

Looking at recent history again, the Falcons waiting on Dan Quinn didn’t keep them from securing Kyle Shanahan as their offensive coordinator. Shanahan is a front-runner for assistant coach of the year honors this season and clearly one of the top one, two or three head coaching prospects available.

Far less prepared candidates already have

jobs while Shanahan seems to be the top option in San Francisco, as the 49ers are the one team still without a head coach.

Where’s Romo in 2017?

Now that the Dallas Cowboys’ 2016 season is over, one of the hottest topics on the grapevine around the league is certain to be the future of Tony Romo.

Earlier this week, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he and he alone would decide the future of Romo, but according to our sources that is not exactly true.

Say what you want about Jones, and many have said plenty, but he is Romo’s biggest fan, the two are reported to have an excellent relationship and depending on what Jones is thinking, Romo should be able to make his own decision to stay or go.

We’re hearing the Cowboys already have a feeler or two out there for what they might be able to get in a trade for Romo, but offers are and will be slow to come in if any develop at all.

The conventional wisdom around the league, according to the folks we’re talking to, is as much as Jones might like to have Romo stick around as a backup to Dak Prescott, that’s not an option that is attractive to Romo and if it gets to the point where it seems likely, Romo will push Jones for his release and the owner would be likely to grant it.

“Tony Romo, free agent” has a very different reality attached to it than “Romo, trade bait.”

As you might have already heard, Romo will cost Jones $24.7 million against the

cap to keep and $19.6 million in dead cap money even if he’s released or traded.

The hook here is beyond the cap ramifications, Romo would receive a $5 million bonus and $14 million in base salary in 2017.

Does Jones like Romo enough to pay him $19 million-plus in 2017 to be his backup?

While it sounds crazy, when you realize Prescott will only make about $635,000 in the second year of his rookie deal, the $20 million investment in your top two QBs would leave Jones pretty consistent with the rest of the league.

The Way We Hear It, Jones really wants to keep Romo, and the QB would be happy to stick around but only as the starter.

Forced to make a change, Jones wants compensation, but there is little or no incentive from other clubs to offer any if they believe Romo will be a free agent.

This situation should build to a boiling point over the next month or so, and what we’re hearing is Jones will eventually become benevolent, a look we’re not exactly used to from the Dallas owner but one that will cause him to free his favorite son.

Should it come to pass, our sources tell us Denver and the New York Jets will be the clubs to watch most closely with the Houston Texans and L.A. Rams being possible surprise suitors.

Sunday marks Ben Roethlisberger’s fourth AFC Championship and Tom Brady’s 11th – and sixth in a row.

However, this is the first Steelers-Patriots meeting in the AFC title match since the 2004 season, when the Patriots won 41-27 at Heinz Field in Roethlisberger’s rookie season. In fact, in the past 15 AFC Championship games, there have only been two (Raiders-Titans in 2002, Colts-Jets in 2009) that did not include Brady or Roethlisberger.

The two quarterbacks have combined for six Super Bowl titles and bring explosive offenses to Foxborough for Sunday’s nightcap. How did they get here? The Pats did not have a great performance, but still managed to beat the Texans by 18 points thanks to Dion Lewis touchdowns as a runner, receiver and returner, and three interceptions of Brock Osweiler. The Steelers

MATCHUPS TO WATCH

Brady completed a woeful 47.4 percent of his passes vs. Houston last week while throwing two interceptions to compile a 68.6 rating. The Texans had the ‘D’ – just not the offense – to pull the upset. They sacked Brady twice and hit him eight times.

Combine that with good coverage in the back end and Brady can be beat.

On the other side of the ball, how do the Patriots’ linebackers handle Le’Veon Bell, who is on a historic and torrid stretch of rushing, rattling off 170 yards last week against the Chiefs.

Bell’s rare patience in the backfield to let his blocks set up, along with his yards after contact make him extremely difficult to contain. During the regular season, the Patriots’ defense allowed 3.85 yards per carry, eighth-best in the NFL. Only six times this season did a Patriots opponent gain at least 100 yards on the ground. Dont’a Hightower is the team’s best run defender in the second level, while nose tackle Malcom Brown can try to slow Bell in the backfield.

FALCONS VS. PACKERS 2:05 p.m. CT, FOX, Mercedes-Benz Stadiumn

OVERVIEW

The Georgia Dome’s sendoff features the NFL’s two most prolific offenses since Week 8, when the Packers (30.0 points per game) visited the Falcons (34.6) for the first time this season, a 3332 home triumph.

Indeed, Atlanta might not require a demolition team for the Georgia Dome; the scorching play of Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan could set it up in flames.

Ryan, the likely MVP, and Kyle Shanahan shredded the vaunted Seahawks for 422 yards and 36 points in a divisional-round deconstruction of Seattle. Ryan continued to spread the ball around brilliantly, connecting with five different pass catchers for at least 70 yards or a touchdown. Once it had a halftime lead, Dan Quinn’s young and ascending defense put the heat on Russell Wilson with a pair of interceptions to propel the Falcons to their first conference ti-

tle bout since squandering a 17-0 lead to the 49ers at home four years ago.

The Packers needed them both after Dallas’ resolute rookies triggered the erasing of 21-3 and 28-13 deficits.

Clay Matthews, Randall Cobb, Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins, Ty Montgomery, James Starks and Cook.

In a game that featured seven lead changes, Rodgers’ resourcefulness was overshadowed by a clutch Ryan, who repeatedly found Mohamed Sanu, including in the end zone for an 11-yard game-winning touchdown to cap the late 75-yard march.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH

Whether it’s Julio Jones or Taylor Gabriel or Sanu, Ryan’s so flush with pass-catching talent it can be easy to forget Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman, the backfield pair totaling 204 yards and two touchdowns a week ago. On the receiving end of Rodgers’ four touchdowns in the first meeting: Trevor Davis, Geronimo Allison and Jeff Janis – all career-firsts. And with the status of Jordy Nelson (ribs) and Davante Adams (ankle) unknown, Allison in particular could again loom large in a likely shootout. Galauner made five of her six 3-pointers in the first half and finished with a game-high 28 points for the Cogs, who fell to 14-4 overall and 2-1 in the Big Northern Conference.

Jesi Nay added 17 points and made four 3-pointers in the loss.

“We played a really, really good game, and it was fast-paced,” Genoa-Kingston coach Kyle Henkel said.

DeKalb graduate Rudy Lopez helped lead the Kishwaukee men’s basketball team as the Kougars stormed back in the second half Tuesday for a 78-73 victory over Black Hawk.

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Bags and Rock and Pudge are heading to Cooperstown.

After a vote that could prove to be a turning point how Steroids Era stars are viewed, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens could be joining them in the next few years.

Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines and Ivan Rodriguez were elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame on Wednesday, earning the honor as Trevor Hoffman and Vladimir Guerrero fell just short of the necessary 75 percent.

Bonds and Clemens, their careers tainted by allegations of steroids use, were passed over for the fifth straight year by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, but each received a majority of votes for the first time.

“They were just awesome,” Bagwell said. “Their demeanor, the way they went about their business, was just amazing, and I respect them.”

On the ballot for the seventh time after falling 15 votes short last year, Bagwell appeared on 381 of 442 ballots for 86.2 percent. Players needed 332 votes

this year.

“Anxiety was very, very high,” Bagwell said. “It’s a weird thing to be a Hall of Famer.

I wrote it on a ball tonight. It was kind of crazy, so it was cool.”

Jeff Bagwell In his 10th and final year of eligibility, Raines was at 380 (86 percent). He is only the fifth player elected in his final year of eligibility after Red Ruffing (1967), Joe Med- Tim Raines wick (1968), Ralph Kiner (1975) and Jim Rice (2009).

“Last night was probably the worst night I’ve had out of the 10 years,” Raines said.

“I knew I was close, but Ivan Rodriguez I wasn’t sure.”

Raines started at 24.3 percent in 2008 and jumped from 55 percent in 2015 to 69.8 percent last year. He said modern metrics boosted his chances from days when voters

considered primarily whether players had 3,000 hits, 500 homers or 300 wins.

“I think social media played a big role,” he said. “There are some things that I did that a lot of the guys that’s already in the Hall of Fame didn’t actually do. So I think it kind of made them look a lot at me a lot closer and they looked a lot deeper, and I think the more they looked, I think the better it turned out for me.”

Rodriguez, at 45 the youngest current Hall member, received 336 votes (76 percent).

“I’ve been having trouble sleeping for three days,” he said.

Rodriguez, the 52nd player elected in his first year of eligibility, joins Johnny Bench in 1989 as the only catchers voted in on their first ballot.

“Johnny Bench was my favorite player growing up,” Pudge added.

Hoffman was five votes short, and Guerrero 15 shy.

“Falling short of this class is disappointing,” Hoffman said in a statement. “I am truly humbled to have come so close. I hope to one day soon share a Hall of Fame celebration with my family, friends, teammates and all

of San Diego.”

Edgar Martinez was next at 58.6 percent, followed by Clemens at 54.1 percent, Bonds at 53.8 percent, Mike Mussina at 51.8 percent, Curt Schilling at 45 percent, Lee Smith at 34.2 percent and Manny Ramirez at 23.8 percent.

Players will be inducted July 30 during ceremonies at Cooperstown along with former commissioner Bud Selig and retired Kansas City and Atlanta executive John Schuerholz, both elected last month by a veterans committee. Some voters said the election of Selig, who presided over the Steroids Era, transformed their view of whether tainted stars should gain entry to the Hall.

Bagwell was a four-time All-Star for Houston, finishing with a .297 batting average, 401 homers and 1,401 RBIs. Raines, fifth in career stolen bases, was a seven-time All-Star and the 1986 NL batting champion who compiled a .294 average and .385 on-base percentage.

Rodriguez was a 14-time All-Star who hit .296 with 311 homers and 1,332 RBIs.

Inauguration performances weren’t always so contentious

efore Donald Trump became president-elect, inauguration performances weren’t nearly so fraught. Singing for a new president wasn’t even a partisan statement, really.

Illustrious contralto Marian Anderson performed for two presidents with opposing ideologies. So did opera singer Jessye Norman. Ethel Merman was an outspoken Republican, so it was no surprise when the Broadway star belted out “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” at Ronald Reagan’s first inaugural gala.

Then again, she performed at John F. Kennedy’s, too.

In 1973, the master of ceremonies at Richard M. Nixon’s swearing-in festivities, Sen. Marlow Cook, R-Kentucky, said: “The inauguration of a president is more than a tradition of ceremony. It is an opportunity to recommit our nation to the ideals of liberty and peace upon which it was founded.”

That’s why getting an invitation to take part was once an unequivocal honor. It was a way to celebrate the country – not just the individual taking office.

This year is different. The stars aren’t lining up to perform at Trump’s inauguration. So far the biggest names he has secured are “America’s Got Talent” contestant Jackie Evancho, to sing the national anthem at the ceremony, and country duo Big & Rich, playing the gala the night before.

Trump’s inaugural chairman, Tom Barrack, tried to explain it all away.

“What we’ve done instead of trying to surround him with what people consider A-listers is we are going to surround him with the soft sensuality of the place,” he told the news media. “It’s a much more poetic cadence than having a circuslike celebration that’s a coronation.”

These misgivings from performers are unprecedented, according to Jim Bendat, author of “Democracy’s Big Day: The Inauguration of Our President, 1789-2013.” After all, Ray Charles, a Democrat, was willing to perform at Reagan’s inauguration.

“People wanted to be a part of the celebration,” he said. “But now you have so many singers and entertainers who perform and talk about issues of love and togetherness and freedom and fighting oppression, and it’s not really surprising that they don’t want to associate themselves with someone as divisive as Donald Trump.”

Trump can take comfort in the fact that not all past presidents had A-listers at their inaugurations.

The modern marriage of celebrity and inauguration originated with Franklin D. Roosevelt, and presidents since have had varied interest in recruiting big names. Here’s a look at some of the highlights.

1941

During his third inauguration, Roosevelt spiced things up with a Constitution Hall gala the evening before he was sworn in. This was the first time that big-name celebrities participated in an inaugura-

Mickey Rooney – just 20 years old then – tickled the ivories and did impersonations, and Charlie Chaplin performed a monologue from his hit film “The Great Dictator.”

1957

Marian Anderson – the famed black singer who was once barred from performing at Constitution Hall – sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” for the inauguration of Dwight D. Eisenhower.

1961

Anderson returned four years later for the inauguration of John F. Kennedy. The 35th president was the first to invite a poet to his inaugural festivities: Robert Frost penned “Dedication” for the occasion but couldn’t read it because of the sun’s glare, so he recited “The Gift Outright” from memory. The gala, meanwhile, had glamorous highlights: Gene Kelly danced, Frank Sinatra sang a reworked version of “That Old Black Magic” (“That Old Jack Magic”) and Sidney Poitier performed. Though there was one conspicuous absence: Sammy Davis Jr. was asked not to attend, lest he ruffle feathers over his recent marriage to a white woman, actress May Britt.

1965

Lyndon B. Johnson’s inauguration was the first for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, one of the few groups that have agreed to perform for Trump. (In a December news release, choir president Ron Jarrett said: “Singing the music of America is one of the

things we do best. We are honored to be able to serve our country by providing music for the inauguration of our next president.”)

1973

Jazz singer Ethel Ennis was not a Republican, but she had a fan who was: Spiro T. Agnew, Nixon’s vice president. At Agnew’s behest, she performed during the Republican National Convention in Miami and again a few months later for the inauguration. She did, however, turn down an offer from the Marine band to accompany her. The Baltimore native was the first singer to perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” a cappella during the inauguration ceremony.

1981

The closest thing to the brouhaha surrounding Trump’s A-list inadequacy is perhaps Ronald Reagan’s inauguration. After all, he came from Hollywood and yet, according to a New York Times story about the festivities, “some critics said that what was surprising was [the event’s] lack of stars. The suggestion has been made that the Democrats still have most of the big stars, especially the youth-oriented ones.”

Compared with 2016, however, the lineup at the gala looked pretty impressive with such big names as Johnny Carson, Charlton Heston, Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Sinatra and – for the younger crowd – Donny and Marie Osmond.

The Student Art Show is a juried exhibition of works by students enrolled in art classes during the fall 2016 semester at Kishwaukee College.

The show was juried by Renee RamseyPassmore, a graphic designer (print, digital, web), photographer, typographer and adjunct faculty member in the Art & Design Department at Columbia College in Chicago.

The Student Art Show includes works in a variety of media, both 2-D and 3-D. BRIEF Jazz at the Egyptian coming in February

The Egyptian Theatre in downtown DeKalb will present “Jazz at the Egyptian,” featuring performances by the DeKalb High School Jazz Ensemble, the Sycamore High School Jazz Ensemble, and the Northern Illinois University Jazz Orchestra.

This is a first-time event that organizers hope will become an annual tradition. Proceeds from the event will support the individual music programs.

The concert will take place at 2 p.m. Feb. 26.

Tickets cost $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors and $5 for children age 12 and younger.

Children’s Community Theatre has named the cast for its next production “Annie Jr.,” which will be presented April 27 through 30 at the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb.

The role of Annie, the plucky redhead orphan who charms everyone’s hearts, will be performed by Molly Johnson, a sixth-grader at Genoa-Kingston Middle School. Portraying her nemesis, Miss Hannigan, will be Kinsley Judd, also of Genoa.

Jack Piazza of Sycamore will play Daddy Warbucks, with Kaitlyn Bowman of Sycamore as his assistant, Grace Farrell.

Daddy Warbuck’s servants, Drake, Cecille, Mrs. Greer and Annette will be played by Sophia Binder (Sycamore), Grace Leopardo (DeKalb), Cara Davis (Somonauk) and Kailey Tischler (Genoa), respectively. Miss Hannigan’s partners-incrime, Rooster Hannigan and Lily St. Regis, will be played by Charlie Vivirito (DeKalb), and Kendel Graham (Somonauk).

President Roosevelt will be played by Matthew Slade of Ashton.

DeKalb Area Retirement Center – Oak Crest residents and staff invite the community to attend its Art Insights program at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, in the Little Theater at Oak Crest.

“Stories from Caesar to Bandits, Beauties and Mermaids” is a program that explores 400 years of Western art including paintings and decorative arts and sculpture.

Artists through the years have taken themes from the classics, medieval literature, natural events and scenery, to contemporary news. Storytime includes two picture sequences as the stories unfold.

Art Insights programs are part of the Chicago Art Institute.

Bob Dylan might not make it to Nobel Prize ceremonies, but he did turn up for an acoustic performance at the Lincoln Memorial.

• If your father has a primary care physician, ask her or him to check the list.

It can be run through a drug interactions database to identify potential problems. If a primary care physician is not part of your father’s health care, you can get the same help from his pharmacist. To keep things simple, it’s a good idea to have just a single pharmacy dispense all of your father’s medications.

• If any problems come to light, contact each of the prescribing physicians and explain the issue. By coordinating with all of the doctors, you can arrive at a list of drugs that are both necessary and safe for your father to take.

• Your father should bring this list of medications to every medical appointment.

He should share it with each doctor he sees so future drug interactions can be avoided.

• When a new drug is prescribed, your father should ask what the drug is for, what is the proper dosage, how long it should be taken for, how he will know it is working and whether there are any side effects or risks associated with the drug.

• Always add any new drug, along with its dosage, to the medications list.

• Periodically check with the prescribing physicians regarding the drugs they have recommended. Perhaps a dosage has changed, a drug can be eliminated, or it should be changed.

Dear Doctors: Our elderly father is seeing several specialists, all of whom have prescribed medications. My brothers and I are worried about how many pills Dad has been told to take, and the fact these doctors don’t seem to be consulting with one another.

How do we make sure the drugs are safe and appropriate?

Dear Reader: You’ve hit on a problem that is both serious and widespread, particularly among the elderly. It’s called polypharmacy, and it describes the simultaneous use of multiple drugs to treat one or more ailments or conditions. The risks of polypharmacy range from drug interactions that may make a person feel unwell, to those that are dangerous and may cause physical harm or even death.

It’s estimated more than 40 percent of men and close to 60 percent of women older than 65 now take five or more medications a week.

This includes prescription medications from physicians; over-the-counter medications such as aspirin or antacids; vitamins, homeopathic or herbal remedies; and nutritional supplements. Any of these, in the wrong combination, can cause problems.

When it comes to medications, these often are prescribed by several different specialists who might not be familiar with a patient’s medical history. When taken in combination, some of these drugs may cause problems such as dizziness, bleeding, confusion, low blood pressure or respiratory distress. In some cases, adverse drug interactions can send patients to the hospital.

So how do you make sure this doesn’t happen to your dad? These are steps that should be taken: • Start by getting organized. Make a complete list of all medications, including any over-the-counter medications as well as herbal and dietary supplements. Write down the dose of each drug and how often and at what time he takes it.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY am an atheist.

My parents, Jeanne although raised Phillips Presbyterian, never to my knowledge participated in organized religion, so it was not part of my upbringing.

Last year, my mom started going to church again, and my kids have been going with her.

I’ve always said they can make their own choices and I’d support them.

Mom is about to go south for the rest of the winter and there’s no obvious church member the kids can go with, but they’d like to keep attending. Would it be wrong for me to go with them on Sundays, even though I don’t believe in the church doctrine and won’t be otherwise involved in the organization?

I’m sure I could be unobtrusive, but I’m not sure what to say if someone asks why I’m there – especially since I’ll stop going once my mother returns to town. The kids are tweens and not old enough to go alone. What do you think? – What’s Appropriate?

Dear What’s: When people see one another in a house of worship, they usually assume they are equally religious and that’s why they’re there. However, if you are asked why you’re there, all you have to say is your children enjoy being there and your mother is away, so you brought them. I don’t think it’s necessary to announce to anyone you’re an atheist.

Dear Abby: My husband constantly complains about the cost of groceries. He recently graduated from college and now works in the corporate world making substantially more than he did before. I’m 16 weeks pregnant, but before I quit my job I was working full time and would buy all the groceries.

Now that my husband shares an account with me, he constantly makes me feel bad for buying food.

Abby, I’m not talking about $300 a week; it’s more like $70 a week for food. Yet he spends twice that amount on beer, video games and lunches for himself. I have told him numerous times how horrible he makes me feel, and have even cried about it, but today he brought up the topic again. I am on the International Bridge Press Association panel that chooses its annual award winners.
