‘Blue Monday’ gets a bad rap

It hadn’t actually occurred to me to feel down on “Blue Monday” until a co-worker brought it up.

Certainly, there were some things I could have been bummed about had I chosen to focus on them.

While so many people, including my children, had the day off in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., I was in my office, working.

When I woke Monday morning, I’d stepped on the bathroom scale for the first time in weeks – a decision I immediately regretted.

“I weigh WHAT?!?”

The January credit card bills had recently arrived in the mailbox. I’d looked at them – another decision I immediately regretted.

“We owe WHAT?!?”

Still, I didn’t give much thought to the fact that Monday was supposed to be, according to a made-up formula, the most depressing day of the year.

It’s a relatively new designation, one that was first propagated by a British travel agency looking to sell people vacation packages.

Booking a vacation is one sure-fire way to cheer yourself up, although just as it happens after the winter holidays, a good vacation can have a hangover effect.

Although it’s more PR gimmick than science, it’s undeniable that there are headwinds to happiness this time of year. It’s dark a lot.

The weather stinks. Your feet get cold, your skin gets chapped, you can wake to find your driveway covered in a treacherous sheet of ice. The bills are fresh and unforgiving.

HOUSTON – Former astronaut Gene Cernan, who as the last person to walk on the moon returned to Earth with a message of “peace and hope for all mankind,” died on Monday, his family said. He was 82.

Cernan was with his relatives when he died at a Houston hospital following ongoing heath issues, family spokeswoman Melissa Wren told The Associated Press. His family said his devotion to lunar exploration never waned.

Cernan is survived by his wife, Jan Nanna Cernan, his daughter and son-in-law, Tracy Cernan Woolie and Marion Woolie, step-daughters Kelly Nanna Taff and husband, Michael, and Danielle Nanna Ellis and nine grandchildren.

NIU students use holiday to teach children about Martin Luther King Jr.

DeKALB – While coloring a picture of Martin Luther King Jr. at the DeKalb Public Library, K’Sai Lancaster, 11, recited a quote from the historic civil-rights leader’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

“One of my favorite quotes from Martin is, ‘I have a dream that little black boys and black girls will join hands with the white girls and white boys,’ ” K’Sai said. “Just ’cause it really makes an impact on me, because I agree with him completely.”

K’Sai and his 6-year-old brother, Dore-an, were among about 20 children Monday who were able to make their day off school meaningful by attending the MLK Day Celebration for Peace at the DeKalb Public Library.

Northern Illinois University’s Center for Black Studies and its MLK Steering Committee sponsored the event, at which youths were invited to hear stories read aloud about King, write down their dreams and get creative with peace-themed crafts.

Gena Flynn, director of NIU’s Center for Black Studies, said about 30 NIU students volunteered for the celebration, including members of Black Male Initiative and Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

She said it was the group’s second year putting together a formal event for Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the library, and they plan to continue the tradition annually.

“Our hope is that it only grows from here,” she said.

Stephan Lancaster, father of K’Sai and Dore-an, said he and his family were visiting DeKalb and thought the event sounded like an engaging activity for the children.

“We always like for the kids to learn more about Martin Luther King and others, so this was a great chance for them to get involved and do something other than stare at a screen,” he said.

TaMira Lee, an NIU senior and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, was at a table with her sorority sisters helping children create a “chain of kindness” with inspirational thoughts written and connected on looped construction paper.

“They are writing down their dreams, what they want to be when they grow up, what they want to see change in the world,” she said. “They’re young, but they have really big minds. The things they’ve been saying have caught

The children’s notes ranged from “Feed the squirrels,” to “You’re going to have ups and downs. You’re going to have downs, but don’t stay down.”

“We know that they’re out of school; we want to give them something fun to do,” Lee said. “We also want to let them know why, the importance behind them not being in school on Martin Luther King Day.” NIU Chief Diversity Officer Vernese Edghill-Walden attended the event with her 5-year-old son, Darius, who painted a peace sign, colored a picture of King and contributed a message of “Love” to the chain of kindness.

“I think it’s important to support students and volunteers, and I wanted to make sure my son does something to commemorate Martin Luther King’s life,” she said. “My family always takes time on the holiday to pay tribute.”

Flynn said the celebration was a way to inspire children to think about the theme of the week, “The Simple Art of Living Together.”

“Through these activities, we want to start sparking the ideas of peace and kindness with kids, and then as they grow, they’ll learn more,” she said.

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A veteran librarian with experience at libraries large and small has taken the top job at the DeKalb Public Library.

Emily Faulkner, 35, took over Monday for Dee Coover, who retired at the end of 2016 after 10 years as the library’s director.

The DeKalb Public Library’s board of trustees selected Faulkner from a group of four finalists. The board unanimously voted to appoint her to the position at a meeting Nov. 9. As director, Faulkner will be paid $85,000 plus benefits, board President Virginia Cassidy said.

Faulkner grew up in DeKalb. As a child, her favorite book at the library was “The Whole Spy Catalogue: An Espionage Lover’s Guide” by Richard Knudson.

“I’m really excited,” she said of the opportunity to lead the DeKalb library.

“It’s a real honor.”

She most recently served as the librarian in cultural and civic engagement department at the Chicago Public Library. In that role, she was responsible for managing more than 30 partnerships with educational institutions, museums, nonprofits and government agencies. She also designed programs by authors, entertainers and local experts for 80 branch libraries within the city of Chicago.

At her post in Chicago, she helped implement and expand programming for the library’s Maker Lab initiative, which offers patrons a chance to learn to use 3-D printers and electronic cutters.

Cassidy said the board was impressed by Faulkner’s enthusiasm, knowledge and her work at Chicago Public Library. The board wanted a leader who not only could manage staff, a budget and a new building, but also work collaboratively with other partners. Library staff members were included in the interview process, Cassidy said.

Faulkner had been with the Chicago Public Library since 2007. Before that, she spent a year with the Broward County Public Library in Florida. She also spent a year and half at the library at the Royal College of Psychiatrists in London. She earned a Master of Information Science degree from City University, London.

One of her first tasks will be to take stock of what the library does well, and what it can do better. She’ll also be focusing on service, fundraising and making sure the library has the pro-

In 2016, the library celebrated the completion of a $25.3 million expansion and restoration project. The effort more than tripled the library’s size from 19,500 square feet to 65,000 square feet.

Faulkner moved into a home in DeKalb over the weekend with her wife, Stephanie, and their three children, Edith, 4, and twins, Everett and Theodore, 2½.

A meet-and-greet open house with Faulkner will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

DeKALB – The annual fundraising event to benefit DeKalb and Sycamore high school sports booster clubs is scheduled to wrap up when the Barbs and Spartans’ girls and boys basketball teams meet Jan. 27 at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center.

The First National Challenge, which was known for many years as the Castle Challenge before Castle Bank was acquired by First National Bank, began 17 years ago.

Event co-chairman Gary Evans said that between the basketball games and football games in the fall, net donations are expected to be around $55,000, which will be split between the DeKalb and Sycamore booster clubs for the 2016-17 school year.

Evans added that the DeKalb Boosters are trying to raise money for a concession stand, while Sycamore Boosters are looking to make changes to the high school’s football field.

Tickets cost $6 and are available until 3 p.m. the day of the event at the athletic offices of both middle and high

schools in DeKalb and Sycamore, local First National Bank locations, the DeKalb and Sycamore chambers of commerce and the Kishwaukee Family YMCA. Parking at the Convocation Center costs $5.

Evans said the sponsors are expecting about 4,800 people to attend, depending on the weather.

In addition to the fundraising efforts, the event will also be a time to honor DeKalb coaches Chuck Schramm and John Cordes for their service to their school’s athletics programs.

Miss Illinois 2016 Jaryn Franklin is scheduled to appear.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. The varsity girls basketball game will start at 6 p.m. while the varsity boys game will start at 8 p.m. There will also feature a basketball shooting area, bounce houses and a 50/50 raffle. The winning team takes a traveling trophy back to their school.

News from across the state Governor signs school, day care lead-testing law

CHICAGO – Illinois elementary schools and day care centers must test drinking water sources for lead and notify parents of the results under legislation signed into law Monday by Gov. Bruce Rauner.

The plan for required one-time testing takes effect immediately and applies to schools with students up to grade 5 and facilities built before 2000. Schools and facilities will have to pay for the testing.

“This will change the system. We’re holding our schools and our day care centers accountable for lead testing,” Rauner said at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event in Chicago with the Rev. Jesse Jackson and state legislators. “We are

going to insist that this get done and our administration will be a key part of this.”

The proposal follows the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, which shed light on the hazards of lead contamination and the disproportionate impact on low-income and minority residents.

Children are most at risk to the effects of elevated lead levels, which can cause developmental delays. Lead pipes were banned in the U.S. in 1986.

Off-duty sergeant wounds person after shots fired

CHICAGO– Authorities said an off-duty Chicago police sergeant shot and wounded a person after someone in a vehicle opened fire on the sergeant and his companions on the city’s northwest side.

Police said the sergeant was walking with acquaintances Sunday night in the Albany Park neighborhood when a group of people in a vehicle instigated a verbal confrontation. Police said someone in the vehicle fired shots, prompting the

sergeant to draw his gun and return fire.

The vehicle sped away. Police said a person in the vehicle, identified as a male, was shot in the head and taken to a hospital. Investigators recovered a weapon.

Neither the sergeant nor his companions were wounded.

Congregation hopes to rebuild after church fire

EAST ST. LOUIS – Members of an East St. Louis congregation are hoping to rebuild after a large blaze destroyed their church.

East St. Louis Fire Chief Jason Blackmon said the Saturday night fire engulfed the whole structure of the Christ Redeemed Missionary Baptist Church. The cause of the blaze is unknown. Blackmon described it as “almost like a big warehouse fire.” He said the fire started in the back of the church and took firefighters about five hours to get under control.

Rail union rejects deal on jobs program for felons

CHICAGO – The union representing Chicago Transit Authority rail workers has come out against an extension of a jobs program for felons.

The decision by Amalgamated Transit Union Local 308 to oppose the Second Chance program that provides felons with temporary jobs cleaning buses and trains could mean the loss of jobs for 63 people.

CTA President Dorval Carter announced last year Local 308 and ATU Local 241, which represents bus workers, had agreed in principle with the CTA to extend the program before it was to expire.

Local 308 President Kenneth Franklin said Carter’s statement that an agreement was reached was “premature” because membership hadn’t yet voted.

Franklin says membership since has voted not to extend the program.

Trump on Monday met with one of King’s sons on the holiday marking the life of the slain American icon just days after the president-elect attacked Rep. John Lewis on Twitter. Lewis and the elder King were among the Big Six leaders of the civil-rights movement of the 1960s.

Trump accused Lewis, D-Ga., for being “all talk” after Lewis questioned the legitimacy of Trump’s election. The president-elect also advised the veteran congressman to pay more attention to his “crime-ridden” Atlanta-area district. Trump’s comments drew widespread criticism and have done little to reassure those uneasy about the transition from the nation’s first black president to a president-elect still struggling to connect with most nonwhite voters.

Martin Luther King III downplayed the slight, saying that “in the heat of emotion a lot of things get said on both sides.” King, who said he pressed Trump on the need for voting reform to increase participation, deemed the meeting “constructive.” King said that while he disagreed with the president-elect’s comments, he believed “at some point in this nation we’ve got to move forward.”

Crowley’s retreat was first reported by The Washington Times. The transition official confirmed the decision on the condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

Trump has continued to lash out at his critics in the intelligence community and questioned whether the CIA director himself was “the leaker of fake news” in a Sunday night tweet.

Mexican resort shooting kills 5, panics festival-goers

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – Gunfire broke out in a crowded beachfront nightclub throbbing with electronic music before dawn Monday, causing five deaths and setting off a bloody stampede by screaming concertgoers at an international festival in this Caribbean resort.

At least one person died in the crush to escape, and some of the 15 people wounded or injured were hurt in the rush out, authorities said.

Quintana Roo state Attorney General Miguel Angel Pech ruled out any terrorist attack, and the state’s governor said it involved a personal dispute.

Pech said the shooting erupted when security personnel tried to stop a man from entering the Blue Parrot club with a gun.

Three of those killed were part of the security detail at the 10-day BPM electronic music festival, Pech said.

State officials said the dead included two Canadians, an Italian and a Colombian. The gunman apparently fled.

Pech, the state attorney general, said the 15 people with injuries included a Mexican woman who was seriously injured.

He said eight of the injured, including two U.S. citizens, were treated at hospitals and released. Canada’s Global Affairs office confirmed at least one Canadian died and said it was investigating the other reported fatality.

It said at least two Canadians were injured. Italy’s Foreign Ministry confirmed one of its citizens died.

The shooting occurred near the largest exit, setting off chaos as concertgoers had to scramble over a metal fence to escape to the beach.

Jeffrey Castelein, 33, a fork lift operator from Belgium, said he heard 15 to 20 shots before he and his friends leapt the fence. “At first we didn’t realize, and then everybody fell down and you had to hide a little bit. And then we went out the back by the sea.”

His group got separated and had to wait for everyone to meet back at the apartment. “It was the longest 20 minutes of my life,” Castelein said.

WASHINGTON – The wife of the Orlando nightclub shooter, who was extensively questioned by federal agents in the days after the massacre, has been arrested by the FBI in connection with the attack, authorities said Monday.

Noor Salman was taken into custody Monday morning in the San Francisco Bay area and is facing charges in Florida including obstruction of justice. A Twitter post from the U.S. attorney’s office in Orlando said Salman will make her initial court appearance Tuesday morning in Oakland, California.

Noor Salman moved to California after her husband, Omar Mateen, was killed in a shootout with SWAT team members during the June 12 massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

FBI agents repeatedly questioned Salman in the aftermath of the shooting about whether she had advance knowledge of her husband’s plans. Salman told The New York Times in an interview published last fall that she knew her husband had watched jihadist videos but that she was “unaware of everything” regarding his intent to shoot up the club. She also said he had physically abused her.

Salman, who grew up northeast of San Francisco, wed Mateen in 2011 after the two met online.

They lived in Fort Pierce, Florida, at the time of the shooting. Last month, Salman filed a petition in a California court to change the name of the son she had with Mateen.

“We said from the beginning, we were going to look at every aspect of this, of every aspect of this shooter’s life to determine not just why did he take these actions – but who else knew about them? Was anyone else involved?” Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in an MSNBC interview on Monday.

Orlando Police Chief John Mina said in a statement that Salman was facing accusations of obstruction of justice and “aiding and abetting by providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization.”

“Nothing can erase the pain we all feel about the senseless and brutal murders of 49 of our neighbors, friends, family members and loved ones,” Mina said. “But today, there is some relief in knowing that someone will be held accountable for that horrific crime.”

Joint center earns advanced certification DAILY CHRONICLE

The Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital Joint Center has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement.

The advanced certification is for Joint Commission-accredited hospitals, critical access hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers seeking to elevate the quality, consistency and safety of their services and patient care. Kishwaukee Hospital Joint Center is the first in the state of Illinois to receive this recognition.

“We are pleased to receive the advanced certification from The Joint Commission, the premier health care quality improvement and accrediting body in the nation,” Dave Smith, joint care coordinator at Kishwaukee Hospital, said in a news release. “We look forward to improving patient safety and quality of care for the increasing number of patients undergoing total hip or total knee replacement surgery.”

The center underwent a rigorous onsite review in November. Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with advanced disease-specific care standards and total hip and total knee replacement requirements, including orthopedic consultation, and pre-operative, intraoperative and post-surgical orthopedic surgeon follow-up care.

Established in 2016 and awarded for a two-year period, the advanced certification was developed in response to the growing number of patients undergoing a total hip or total knee replacement surgery, as well as the increased focus on clinical evidence-based patient care as it relates to pain management, quality of life issues, functional limitation in mobility and the return to normal daily activities.

The Kishwaukee Hospital Joint Center has changed the joint replacement experience by using research-based best practices, providing a Joint Center coordinator to guide the process of a joint replacement, advanced training, pre-operative educational training, a personal coach, and a group emphasis on both pre- and post-operative. These practices have led to better outcomes. Patients experience a one-day hospital stay, are discharged directly to their home rather than a nursing facility, and are up and walking more than 300 feet the morning after surgery with the ability to once again fully extend their knee.

Sonic restaurant franchise planned for DeKalb location

DeKALB – Plans are underway to bring a Sonic Drive-In restaurant to DeKalb.

Sonic has applied for a specialuse permit for site plan modifications to the drive-through at the former KFC at 1115 W. Lincoln Highway, according to city documents.

City Development Director Jo Ellen Charlton said the modifications will come before the DeKalb City Council in February.

The developer must gain the council’s approval before moving forward with building plans.

Sonic has more than 3,500 locations nationwide and earned $1,244,000 average unit sales in 2015, according to its website.

Sonic’s menu consists of fast-food items such as hamburgers, corn dogs and chili dogs as well as soft drinks, slushes, milkshakes and ice cream.

The restaurant chain is known for its drive-in ordering stalls, carhop food delivery and offering thousands of possible drink combinations.

The closest Sonic locations to DeKalb are in Algonquin, Aurora

The vacant building at 1115 W. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb could be the location of a new Sonic Drive-In if the DeKalb City Council approves the developer’s request for a special-use permit next month. and Rockford, all roughly 25 miles away.

The building at 1115 W. Lincoln Highway was occupied by a KFC and Long John Silver’s fast-food hybrid franchise until it closed in late 2015.

Officials from Weaver Enterprises, which owned the building, said at the time that the location was more profitable to sell, and planned enhancements to the image of Col.

Sanders outside the restaurant were prohibited by city code.

The building has been home to various other fast-food restaurants.

It opened as the third Wendy’s location in Illinois in June of 1975.

Before that, it was a Roy Rogers restaurant.

The Wendy’s was damaged in a grease fire in 1985 and again in 2001; the estimated damage from the 2001 fire was $250,000 at the time.

Picture mixed on Sessions The concerns voiced about Sen. Jeff Sessions’, R-Ala., nomination for attorney general cannot be written off as political grandstanding. There are substantive objections to Sessions, for years an ideological outlier in the Senate, ascending to the pinnacle of the U.S. justice system. Although the senator made a series of encouraging commitments during his confirmation hearings last week, he did not allay every reasonable worry.

Sessions was at his most impressive when he repeatedly insisted he would respect the rule of law, affirming that the attorney general must be willing to say “no” to the president and must resign if ordered to do something illegal. Mark those words.

Sessions also committed to enforcing Supreme Court rulings upholding abortion rights and samesex marriage, although he disagrees with them. He promised to recuse himself from any outstanding questions relating to Hillary Clinton’s email practices or the Clinton Foundation, given his strong comments on these matters during the campaign.

Although he alarmingly supported “enhanced interrogation techniques” in the past, he acknowledged that laws barring them now must be respected.

Sessions was not quite as definitive in disclaiming Trump’s proposed “Muslim ban.” He insisted that restricting all Muslims would be wrong, but he left wiggle room when he said that those who interpret their religion to include “dangerous doctrines” should be scrutinized.

Although Sessions painted himself as a civil rights champion, the picture is mixed. He acknowledged the South’s horrific legacy of racism and called the NAACP “an organization that has done tremendous good.” But he mostly evaded specific questions about discriminatory voter ID laws, which the Justice Department must play a key role in fighting. He pointed out that he voted to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act, but his Democratic interlocutors reminded him that he also opposed fixing a core section after the Supreme Court gutted it.

Most concerning was Sessions’ habit of pleading ignorance to avoid taking clear positions on some pressing issues. “I have done no research into that” was his response when asked if the Russians conducted election hacking, even though he expressed confidence in intelligence agencies who have taken a clear position.

Will Sessions live up to his commitment to stand up to the White House when the president or his staff is wrong? Will he treat civil rights enforcement as the core Justice Department responsibility it is?

As attorney general, Sessions will have the opportunity to prove he is as serious about these principles as he claims.

Death penalty not the answer

The death penalty is not a deterrent to horrendous crime. It has never proved to be. And it’s costly. So why do we do it?

A federal district court jury in South Carolina last week sentenced Dylann Roof to death for his June 2015 attack on a black church’s Bible study group. Nine people were slaughtered.

A lot of people would argue Roof should be put to death.

And we’re guessing it would include the relatives of some of his victims. We can’t blame their emotion. All their relatives were doing was going to Bible study class. How horrific it must have been to get that phone call from authorities.

During his trial, he served as his own attorney and in a sworn confession he told FBI agents “I had to do it.”

Roof showed no remorse after he was arrested. Yes, he’s despicable. He’s proven to be

a terrible collection of molecules. He is the poster child for capital punishment. Yet, we still shouldn’t do it.

Social media has taken to debating his death sentence.

It’s running about half and half.

Some people want him to rot in prison, others want him to fry.

But study after study has shown the death penalty is actually more costly than a life in prison. According to deathpenalty.org, cases without the death penalty cost approximately $740,000, while cases where the death penalty is sought cost $1.26 million. It’s a high price to pay either way and justice should be the motivational factor, not economics. But the hunch here is the boys in the big house will take care of justice on their own, which is typical in these situations.

Currently, only 18 states have the death penalty, with Texas be-

ing the most prominent user. Yet that fact has done little to deter capital crime in Texas. It leads the nation in capital crime.

Iowa did away with the death penalty in 1964. And during the years, federal courts have offered rulings on capital punishment. That debate, we suspect, will continue.

We certainly don’t feel sorry for Roof and the punishment he’s been given. It’s the law of the land in South Carolina, so he’s getting what the law in that state allows.

But, while it will fill another grave once his lethal dose of poison has been injected by our government, there’s no evidence to support his death is going to do anything to deter future capital crimes by others.

So, why do we do it?

We shouldn’t.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

“Fake news,” Trump charged at the news conference, turning back on his critics a meme they have been using to suggest that voters were gulled into voting for him. “I think it was disgraceful, disgraceful that the intelligence agencies allowed any information that turned out to be so false and fake out.”

One must add that it’s not clear that “intelligence agencies” let out the information.

But if they did, it was in line with the report they delivered to President Barack Obama last week claiming with high degrees of confidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin directed the hacking and release of emails from the Democratic National Committee and John Podesta, Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman.

That report said the Russians wanted to discredit Clinton when she was the favorite to win the election.

But she was the favorite to win – on psephological websites, in betting markets and in newsrooms everywhere – until about 9 o’clock Eastern time on election night.

It also said they wanted Trump to win. How could the intelligence agencies know exactly what was in

Putin’s mind?

It’s certainly likely that he wanted to sow discord and dismay about the American electoral process. But Russia, as Winston Churchill said in October 1939, “is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.”

For his part, Trump retreated from his long-standing and puzzling reluctance to identify Russia as the hacker.

He added that other hacking – apparently of Office of Personnel Management records – was done by the Chinese.

And he added that if Putin did want him to win, that would be “an asset, not a liability.”

My ability to read the minds of leaders of the intelligence community is weaker than theirs to read Putin’s, and I lack knowledge of just how the 35-page dodgy dossier found its way into the computerized hands of BuzzFeed.

But what we’re seeing looks an awful lot like an attempt by intelligence officials, probably including presidential employees, to delegitimize the president-elect and his administration. It’s in line with the warnings to Trump by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer not to tangle with the intelligence community.

That’s disturbing, even if you are troubled also, as I am, by Trump’s persistent unwillingness to criticize and persistent propensity to praise Putin.

Just before Trump met with the press in New York, his nominee for secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, was fielding pointed questions from Republican Sen. Marco Rubio about policy toward Russia.

Those are fair questions. Russia has invaded Ukraine and annexed Crimea in violation of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum.

There’s evidence – see David Satter’s Aug. 17 piece for National Review – that the Putin regime has committed murder.

Meanwhile, Trump booster Sean Hannity has been recalling that the Soviet Union was our ally in World War II. But that was only after Josef Stalin’s erstwhile ally Adolf Hitler invaded Russia and Churchill said, “If Hitler invaded hell, I would make at least a favorable reference to the devil in the House of Commons.”

Things are not so dire today.

Perhaps, as Trump said, we can work with Russia in fighting radical Islam.

Perhaps not. There’s room for disagreement on that – but not about whether the intelligence community should be undermining the president-elect.

CNAs. In fact, you could call it a CNA staffing crisis.

CNAs who have been on the payroll for years are quitting, and new employees are not staying because of this situation. For those of you who don’t know, the role of a CNA is paramount when it comes to the hands-on care of your loved one’s most personal needs.

We are the workers responsible for their regular toileting, washing and dressing in the morning, undressing and washing at night, assisting with their meals, attending to them when they are sick, and overall getting to know their habits and who they are so they can feel safe and at home at

DCRNC. They depend on us to help them with these very basic necessities. In any nursing facility, the value of a good CNA should never be underestimated, because when that happens and an administration is forced to assign one CNA to a hallway of 20 to 24 residents, not only does the quality of care dramatically plummet, but it also creates an unsafe environment for both the resident and the nursing assistant.

Under no circumstances should a CNA be expected to do this!

Please, people of DeKalb County, our local government, the board of directors of DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center, and Management Per-

formance Associates, before turning over that first shovel of dirt on this major renovation project, take a closer look at our staffing problem, because it is directly affecting the care of our residents, and aren’t they the reason we have a county home to begin with?

Perhaps investing some of the proposed $15 million in hiring and keeping CNAs would be a better place to start than adding more rooms and a new kitchen. After all, we’re not talking about pots and pans here, or a horse’s place in relation to a cart, we are talking about living, breathing souls.

On Wednesday, in his first news conference as president-elect, Donald Trump came out swinging – against some of the media (while praising others), against the policies and performance of the Obama administration, and against the intelligence community.

He had some legitimate reasons.

One was CNN’s report that Trump had been briefed that Russian operatives said they have compromising information about him.

And BuzzFeed published a 35page document it described as “a dossier, compiled by a person who has claimed to be a former British intelligence official, (alleging) Russia has compromising information on Trump.”

Pretty dodgy stuff.

It turns out that this dossier had been circulated widely to news organizations, which have been trying to verify some of the charges and failed to do so.

Trump praised his perennial nemesis, The New York Times, for declining to air the document, and BuzzFeed even noted, “The allegations are unverified, and the report contains errors.”

One of those errors Trump was able to point out. His staffer Michael Cohen – said by the person claiming to be a former British intelligence official to have communicated with Russians in Prague – showed, by photographing his passport, that he hadn’t been out of the country at the

“We slowed it down in the end and were more in control,” said Hayley Westberg, who finished with six points and eight rebounds off the bench for DeKalb. “That helped.”

Against Batavia, the Barbs struggled to score, with Rapp and Williams only scoring eight each and no one else chipping in more than four points. In the late game against Bartlett, seven Barbs scored at least four points, led by Rapp’s 15 and Mills’ 11.

“We came in to [the game wanting to] end [the tournament] with a win,” Westberg said.

By the numbers: There were 58 turnovers in the game, 30 by the Barbs.

The DeKalb bench scored 12 points, with six each by Westberg and Hayley Brown. Rapp had 11 rebounds to lead all players. The Hawks were 8 for 22 on 3-pointers, with Hare going 5 for 7.

DeKalb was 2 for 5 from long range.

Beyond the stats: The game’s last field goal was scored with 3:15 left. The rest of the scoring came from the freethrow line.

They said it: “It’s nice to know we lost three games but still had enough energy, hard work and work ethic to really still compete and end up the tournament on a positive note,” Whitefield said. “I think it’s a good sign for the rest of the season. The girls want to work, and we owe some teams in our conference some payback.”

Bartlett made a pair of free throws on its next possession, but Jacki Rapp answered with two of her own to put the lead back to four, then Paige Bednarke missed a shot, Williams got the rebound, and Rocky Mills made a pair of free throws with 9.2 seconds left to ice the win.

The Barbs went 6 for 6 from the line in the final minute.

“We’re usually the ones where the other teams are the ones hitting 8 for 9 or 6 for 6 down the stretch as we foul, and we’re going 2 for 8,” Whitefield said. “It was nice to hit our free throws.

He spent Monday leading the Cogs in scoring.

Foster scored a season high to help the Genoa-Kingston boys basketball team to a 78-73 victory over McHenry in a back-and-forth contest to take the de facto third-place game of the Central MLK Classic on Monday afternoon.

“I knew I had a big game coming, so I had to get focused and ready to play,” Foley said. “I came home from our game on Saturday and started throwing up. My whole family is sick. Literally my whole family had it. I’m feeling a little bit better, but I’m still feeling it.

My stomach is still hurting.”

Foley led the Cogs (12-8) with 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting – including 3 of 3 from beyond the arc – and had six rebounds in the win. He was one of five players in double figures for the Cogs. Senior guard Zach Miller, who also had been dealing with an illness last weekend, scored 18 points and had five rebounds and was named to the all-tournament team. Genoa-Kingston sophomore Griffin Hansen had 13 points and made three 3-pointers, and senior post Klint Wewetzer and senior wing Justin McNeal each added 10.

“We had a slow start (to the season) because we didn’t have all our guys because of the football (team’s) success, and we felt a month (into the season), I was excited to see where we’d be at, and I think we’re at the position that I envisioned us,” Cogs coach Corey Jenkins said. “I don’t think you want to

BURLINGTON – Despite leading by three points heading into the fourth quarter, the Kaneland boys basketball team suffered a tough final period and fell, 59-47, to Wheaton Academy in the last day of the Central MLK Classic on Monday.

The Knights (4-14) led, 37-34, heading into the fourth quarter before dropping their eighth consecutive game.

Senior forward Dan Franck scored a team-high 14 points, including eight in the first quarter, and sophomore guard Grant Heimerdinger had eight points in the second quarter, including a pair of 3-pointers, for the Knights.

McHenry junior Gavin Markgraff led the Warriors (10-8) with 19 points and had four 3-pointers. However, McHenry coach Tim Paddock wasn’t pleased with the defensive effort of the Warriors, who he said came into the game surrendering 42 points a game.

“We were awful defensively,” Paddock said. “They hit shots, but we didn’t do a good job defensively. We didn’t do a good job of figuring out who can play for them and let them get to the lane whenever they wanted.”

It was a see-saw game with neither team leading by more than nine points.

The Warriors went ahead, 51-42, after a 6-0 run that was capped by a layup and two free throws by Markgraff with 3:50 left in the third.

Obama welcomes World Series champs to the White House

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama, with only days left in office, honored the Cubs, the 2016 World Series champions, Monday afternoon at the White House.

“They said this day would never come,” Obama said as he started his remarks. As he walked into the East Room, the boisterous audience, consisting of the extremely well-connected, chanted in the singsong Chicagoans know well, “Let’s Go, Cubbies!”

Obama, relishing the moment, said he has a chance to say “Something none of my predessors ever had a chance to say, ‘Welcome to the White House, the World Series champion Chicago Cubs.

“I will say that the Cubs took long enough. I’ve only got four days left,” Obama said.

After the event, Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts said, “That was the best sports ceremony ever.”

It’s routine for a championship team to be honored by a president.

What’s unusual is that Obama sped up the timetable so he could salute the champs from his adopted hometown on his watch.

Obama has been a vocal White Sox fan, but was gracious in hosting the Cubs. Cubs president Theo Epstein issued a “midnight pardon” to the president for being a Sox fan.

“Among Sox fans,” Obama said, “I’m the Cubs’ No. 1 fan.”

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who wears No. 44, presented Obama – the nation’s 44th president – with a No. 44 Cubs jersey with “OBAMA” on the back. When Cubs Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins suggested Obama wear the Cubs jersey, the president smiled and politely declined.

In a more serious note, Epstein told the president: “Thank you for the dignity and integrity with which you served our country.”

In the president’s last official event at the White House, the president explained why sports teams get honored by presidents.

“Sports has a way of changing hearts in a way that politics and business doesn’t,” Obama said.

The event, in the White House East Room, was crawling with Chicagoans, starting with Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s former chief of staff who brought with him his younger brother Ari, the Hollywood agent. Other elected officials included Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan; state Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago; Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.; Democrats Rep. Mike Quigley and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi and GOP Rep. Randy Hultgren. Former Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood also was at the ceremony.

Hawks reluctant to make a big splash, but might have to to make another Cup run

And they’re hosting the draft and want to hoard picks, not deal them away.

It’s almost unthinkable they will trade their first-round pick this year, as they did in 2015 to get Antoine Vermette and 2016 to get Andrew Ladd.

At the same time, though, they quietly have been banking cap space by keeping their roster at 21 players until recalling Nick Schmaltz on Saturday. Capfriendly.com says the Hawks will have more than $3.3 million of cap space available at the deadline. So if they are wiling to part with a roster player and can coax a team into eating some salary, maybe they can land the Toronto Maple Leafs’ James van Riemsdyk, the Colorado Avalanche’s Gabriel Landeskog or Matt Duchene or the Arizona Coyotes’ Martin Hanzal.

They need to try.

The Hawks are very good, but they’re not great. They’re Stanley Cup contenders, but they’re not favorites.

And they have too many defensemen and not enough forwards.

The solution isn’t simple, but it’s obvious: Find that top-line left winger and watch the pieces all fall into place.

Midterm grades are in, and they’re not pretty

jcowley@suntimes.com Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg is running short on superlatives when discussing star Jimmy Butler. ‘‘Great,” ‘‘brilliant” and ‘‘unbelievable” are words Hoiberg has used throughout the first half of the regular season to describe Butler.

But one word he’s not using is ‘‘surprised.” ‘‘Because I know how much time and effort he puts into his offseason workout programs,” Hoiberg said. ‘‘Just how he’s always looking to add to his game. The biggest thing we’ve done more with him this year is put the ball in his hands, especially in the fourth quarter, and let him play the role of our lead facilitator. He’s been really good in that role.”

Is he an upgrade from Tony Snell? Yes, because he contributes, especially on defense.

But he still is a shooting liability. Grade: B. Rajon Rondo: Based on performance, Rondo gets a C. Then again, can a grade be handed out if the professor was misleading in the lesson?

Grade: B-.

Doug McDermott: His 31

points Sunday were great, but why can’t he be a 20-point threat every game? Grade: C+.

Cristiano Felicio: He has great feet and improving hands, but he still is a onetrick pony around the rim.

Grade: C+.

Nikola Mirotic: There hasn’t been enough improvement from a player general manager Gar Forman overhyped.

Grade: C-.

Jerian Grant: He has had a few moments, including a start in Portland. He’s an interesting athlete, but still has a long way to go. Grade: C-.

Bobby Portis: His dwindling minutes show exactly what the team thinks of him. Playing time doesn’t lie. Grade: D+.

Isaiah Canaan: The 3-point specialist looked like the perfect piece for the second unit early in the season, but he barely is used these days.

Grade: D.

Paul Zipser: Forman has been doing his best to promote him, but this isn’t the German League. He has a bright future – for the Windy City Bulls.

Grade: D. Denzel Valentine: Bad ankles and catching Butler’s flu have hampered him. The rookie has shown some signs, but we need to see more. Grade: Incomplete.

Hoiberg: Do coaches improve? Absolutely. Has Hoiberg done so in his second season? Absolutely. Victories against elite teams aren’t accidental, but neither are losses to below-average opponents.

Grade: C+.

Front office: Unloading Rose was masterful. That saves Forman and vice president John Paxson from a midseason F. But they still have too many missteps on their résumés, including a major one this season with the roster they built. The Bulls lack shooters and athletes. Grade: D-.

Against one of the hottest teams in the league, a division rival that was on the verge of passing his Blackhawks for the top spot in the Western Conference, coach Joel Quenneville apparently didn’t think he had 12 forwards worthy of playing.

So he dressed seven defensemen Sunday against the Minnesota Wild and kept sending Patrick Kane over the boards again and again.

It almost worked. Kane was spectacular, but the Hawks squandered his two early goals and lost, 3-2, falling out of first place for the first time since early November. The loss came on the heels of a humiliating 6-0 loss Friday to the Washington Capitals.

But the Hawks don’t panic, nor should they. They know April, May and June are when the games really matter, not January. And the Capitals and Wild have been cautionary tales

about peaking too early in the past.

The Capitals ran roughshod over the NHL last season on their way to the Presidents’ Trophy, only to lose to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round. And the Wild went on a 24-5-1 tear from late January to late March in 2015, only to get swept by the Hawks in the second round.

Patrick Kane So defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk sort of chuckled at the thought that the Hawks’ loss Friday was ‘‘demoralizing.” And although Kane deemed the disappointing weekend a ‘‘wake-up call,” he hardly seemed overwhelmed by it. ‘‘You play two of the better teams in the league and lose, there’s got to be room for improvement, right?” he said.

No, the sky isn’t falling after two mid-January losses. But it doesn’t exactly feel as though the sky is the limit

for this Hawks team, either. It’s starting to look a lot like the 2015-16 squad – far too reliant on Kane’s line and great goaltending. Yes, the defense is deeper than it was last season, but the forwards are even thinner. Last season, it was Marian Hossa who couldn’t seem to find the back of the net. This season, it’s Jonathan Toews.

The solution is clear: The Hawks must acquire a top-six winger before the trade deadline Feb. 28. The domino effect would be massive. Suddenly, Toews (seven goals all season) and Hossa (no goals in nine games after his torrid start) would have the left winger they’ve been looking for since the start of last season.

And if the Hawks can fill that spot, Vinnie Hinostroza can bolster the bottom six, which desperately needs it.

Add Hinostroza and the eventual return of injured Marcus Kruger to the mix, and the Hawks suddenly have four capable lines, with Andrew Desjardins and Jordin Tootoo (who have combined for zero goals and zero assists) as viable extras.

The Hawks have been sniffing around the trade market, but a source said they are hesitant to make a major

McIlroy withdraws from Abu Dhabi because of rib injury

VIRGINIA WATER, England – Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from the Abu Dhabi Championship this week because of a rib injury.

The European Tour released a statement Monday saying the second-ranked McIlroy underwent tests after he was injured during the SA Open and they revealed a stress fracture.

McIlroy said it was “bitterly disappointing” and “really quite annoying” to miss the tournament, which has the best field of the season on the European Tour.

The Abu Dhabi Championship starts Thursday and is headlined by Americans Dustin Johnson and defending champion Rickie Fowler.

Green Bay’s win over Dallas seen by average of 48.5M on Fox

NEW YORK – Green Bay’s 34-31 win over Dallas was seen by an average of 48.5 million on Fox, the most-viewed NFL divisional playoff game ever.

The game Sunday had a 26.1 rating and 46 share, the network said Monday, the highest-rated NFC divisional game since 1997.

The rating is the percentage of TV households tuned to a program, and the share is the percentage watching a telecast among those homes with TVs on at the time.

Pittsburgh’s 18-16 victory over Kansas City, shifted to prime time Sunday night because of bad weather, was seen by 37.4 million people on NBC and its digital platform.

“It’s one of the greatest plays that you’ll ever see in that ... we call it the final eight (plays) situation for us. But yes, the orchestration and the protection call, the route concept, great, great job with it,” McCarthy said.

And with those two plays, the Packers were able to cross “last-second win on the road” off their checklist during what has been a remarkable turnaround for a team that was once 4-6.

Pursuing record, Williams opens with win

The Associated Press MELBOURNE, Australia – For five games in the second set, Serena Williams played almost flawless tennis in her firstround match at the Australian Open.

Then came the rustiness that tends to follow a lengthy layoff, giving Belinda Bencic a glimmer of hope, before Williams regained her composure to win, 6-4, 6-3, today. The six-time Australian Open champion improved her impressive record in the first round of Grand Slam tournaments to 65-1.

The No. 2-ranked Williams’ priority here is an Open era record 23rd major title. She’s has taken the first step, beating a player who was seeded 12th here last year and reached a career-high No. 7 ranking.

“She was just recently in the top 10.

I knew it would be one of the toughest first-round matches I’ve ever played,” the newly engaged Williams said.

In Round 2 she’ll meet Lucie Safarova, who beat Yanina Wickmayer, 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-1.

Bencic got one service break in the

first set, but only took two points in the first three games on Williams’ serve in the second.

Serving for the match at 6-4, 5-1, things changed for Williams. She finished her 2016 after the U.S. Open, resting injuries, and started 2017 with an error-prone loss in New Zealand.

Williams served only her second double-fault of the match to give Bencic a break-point chance, and the Swiss teenager converted it with a crossSerena court winning forehand.

Williams Bencic held at love to close the gap, but then faced a match point.

Williams double-faulted again on her first match point, but made no mistake on her second. She finished with 30 winners and 30 unforced errors, eight errors and four double-faults.

Karolina Pliskova and Johanna Konta both made their Grand Slam breakthroughs last year, both prepared for the season’s first major with title runs in Australia and both advanced with

straight sets wins.

U.S. Open finalist Pliskova followed her title win at the Brisbane International with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Sara Sorribes Tormo.

“I feel good on the court, especially when I win my first title in the first week of the year,” said Pliskova, who beat Serena Williams in the U.S. Open semifinals before losing to Angelique Kerber.

“So I’m ready for the tournament.”

Konta, who won the Sydney International title last week, had a 7-5, 6-2 win over Kirsten Flipkens.

“I definitely love playing here. It’s a dream,” Konta said. “A lot has happened in the last year, but I’m just enjoying playing and getting better each day.”

Ninth-seeded Konta was a surprise semifinalist in her debut at the Australian Open last year, starting with a first-round win over Venus Williams and sparking a strong 2016 season that ended with her in the top 10.

Also advancing were No. 21 Caroline Garcia, No. 30 Ekaterina Makarova and Naomi Osaka of Japan, who beat Thai wild-card entry Luksika Kumkhum.

State Rep. Sara Feigenholtz, D-Chicago, said, “My love for the Cubs is not new, and it’s not a secret. I am just flat-out lucky to have Wrigley Field in my district,” she told the Sun-Times.

“I am still floating on air about the Cubs winning the World Series. My admiration for the president is no secret either; seeing President Obama and the Cubs together – it’s a dream come true. I am just over the moon. Pinch me.”

The Ricketts family, which owns the Cubs, is very political.

Parents Joe and Marlene Ricketts are megadonors to Republican candidates and causes. Their four kids are on the Cubs board: Laura Ricketts is a major Democratic donor and fundraiser, active in Obama’s and Hillary Clinton’s campaigns. Todd Ricketts runs major GOP-allied political funds and is President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to be the deputy commerce secretary. Tom, the board chairman, is a conservative, and Pete is the GOP governor of Nebraska.

Laura, Todd and Tom flanked the president during the ceremony.

Four current players who were on the World Series roster did not make the trip: reliever Hector Rondon and starting pitchers Jake Arrieta, Jon Lester and John Lackey. Arrieta said over the weekend he had family health issues to attend to.

Among former players attending were Aroldis Chapman, Dexter Fowler, David Ross and Chris Coghlan. Two former players from the World Series missed the trip: outfielder Jorge Soler and pitcher Travis Wood.

Epstein, Maddon and Rizzo all described how impressive the moment was when the president and first lady entered the room as the team was gathered and chatting before the public event.

“You could hear a pin drop,” Rizzo said.

“It really was an amazing moment when the entire organization was gathered around waiting for a while, and then the president and first lady bounded into the room with tremendous energy and gave really heartfelt remarks,” Epstein said. “You could tell this visit had a lot of personal meaning to them.

The first lady talking about her days on the South Side as a Cubs fan bonding with her father over their support of the Cubs. Clearly she was moved by the championship, and it was a great moment for all of us.”

GREEN BAY, Wis. – For once after a game, Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby felt sore.

He got mobbed by giddy teammates after hitting the 51-yard field goal as time expired to beat the Dallas Cowboys.

At one point, Crosby had to beg hulking left tackle David Bakhtiari from trying to pick up the kicker for a victory parade.

After getting eliminated from the playoffs on the last play in each of the previous three seasons, the Packers experienced last-second elation in the 3431 win over Dallas on Sunday.

Green Bay will face the Atlanta Falcons on the road in the NFC championship game Sunday.

“Usually after a game, I don’t feel beat up,” a smiling Crosby said Monday. “We play a kid’s game, and those moments like that just kind of bring that (joy) out of us.”

Crosby’s clutch kick was set up by Aaron Rodgers’ throw, while rolling to his left, to toe-dragging tight end Jared Cook along the sideline for a 36-yard gain. Coach Mike McCarthy on Monday credited Rodgers with making all the right calls on that play.

Last season, the Arizona Cardinals beat the Packers in overtime, 26-21, in the divisional round on Larry Fitzgerald’s 5-yard touchdown catch.

The Packers fell, 28-22, to the Seahawks in overtime on Jermaine Kearse’s 35-yard touchdown reception in the NFC title game in Seattle two years ago after blowing a 16-0 lead.

They lost, 23-20, in a wild-card game in the 2013 season to the San Francisco 49ers on Phil Dawson’s 33-yard field goal as time expired in regulation.

“We’ve been in that situation before.

We’ve got to keep fighting and keep playing until the last second,” said tight end Richard Rodgers, who caught a 34-yard touchdown pass against Dallas.

The Packers have bounced back from the season-ending injury to running back Eddie Lacy in October. They have proved they can win even without top receiver Jordy Nelson, who missed the Cowboys game with injured ribs.

The defense has withstood injuries to the secondary.

“This team’s personality is one of a unique energy. They don’t swing too high, they don’t swing too low,” McCarthy said Monday. “When you go through playoff runs, a lot of teams go through injuries. You have to overcome it. We will.”

Vitamin B-12, vitamin D, iron, zinc, calcium and essential fatty acids are key nutrients for proper development in babies and children. Getting an adequate amount of B-12, which is provided by milk and eggs in a traditional diet, and meeting the minimum requirement for iron, which is present in red meat, is of particular concern in the vegan diet.

As there are no known plant sources for vitamin B-12, and without meat to provide essential fatty acids and other nutrients, providing a nutritional supplement, such as a multivitamin, is essential to normal growth and good health.

Another concern is the plant-based diet is less nutrient-dense and more difficult to digest than the traditional diet. It not only takes more food to meet caloric and nutritional needs in a plant-based diet, it requires a greater amount of energy for the body to extract nutrients. Including concentrated sources of energy such as nuts and nut butters, soy products and legumes will help support appropriate growth.

A final thought – going vegan is a radical change. Perhaps suggest to your sister the family do a dry run, for instance Vegan Wednesdays for a month or two? If that works, then they can expand slowly until veganism becomes a family lifestyle.

Dear Doctors: My sister has decided to switch her entire family to a vegan diet, including her 2-year-old twins. But I’m really worried – is it possible for young children to stay healthy and get all of the nutrients a growing body requires?

Dear Reader: Unlike a vegetarian diet, which cuts out meat, poultry and fish, the vegan approach eliminates all animal-based products. It centers instead on whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables and leafy greens.

Some people choose a vegan diet for health reasons, others for ethical ones. But because not all nutrients essential to human health are present in plants, vegans face special challenges to ensure their diet is well-rounded.

A vegan diet for young children has gotten a lot of bad press recently. A mother in Pennsylvania, who fed her infant only nuts and berries in an effort to go vegan, was recently charged with child endangerment.

In Italy, where a number of vegan babies wound up in the hospital with malnutrition, some lawmakers want to make a plant-based diet illegal for anyone under 16.

But these are extreme cases. Proponents of plant-based diets say the real culprit is ignorance of proper nutritional principles, not veganism itself. With care and vigilance, and with the guidance of a pediatrician or registered dietitian, a well-balanced vegan diet can provide the nutritional essentials of children and adolescents.

Due to their more intensive nutritional requirements, children and adolescents are more susceptible to malnutrition when following an atypical diet. With a relatively short window in childhood during which critical growth in the brain, skeleton and internal organs takes place, it’s all too easy for a child’s diet to adversely affect future

Should I abide by his wishes and not allow her to have the phone, or do you think my points are valid? – Mom With Phone Issue Dear Mom: Wanting your daughter to have the cellphone in case of emergency seems valid to me. If you are her custodial parent, I think that prerogative belongs to you.

But I do have a question: Who took the phone away from your daughter? If you did it because she was abusing the privilege, then she will learn her lesson if you are consistent. If a teacher takes it away from her at school, there should be consequences and you should ensure they are enforced.

Dear Abby: I have an unusual problem. I’m very accident-prone. Over the past several years I have been in a cast many times, sometimes for long periods. My friends constantly tease me about it when what I’d really appreciate is a little compassion and maybe a little help while I am recovering. If their making light of your predicament is hurting your feelings, you have to tell them so.

These North-South hands were bid by twins from England, Jason and Justin Hackett. Two clubs was natural and game-forcing. Note North’s careful three-diamond rebid. Yes, he had only three-card support, but those three honors were more powerful than four low cards would have been. Five no-trump asked South to pick a slam, and Justin did well to choose the 4-3 fit.

West led a trump. South took that on the board and ran the heart queen. West won and persevered with a second trump. However, declarer won on the board, played a heart to his ace, ruffed a heart, crossed to the spade ace, drew trumps and claimed. His 12 tricks were three spades, two hearts, four diamonds, two clubs and the heart ruff.

Every other South in a six-team event played in six no-trump, but only two succeeded. Do you see how to bring home six no-trump?

This slam is against the odds.

Probably most declarers hoped for a 3-3 club split, but the winning line was to lead a heart toward dummy’s queen. If West took the trick, South had 12 winners. Or, if West played low, declarer, after winning with dummy’s queen, could run his pointed-suit winners to squeeze-endplay West. The curious may work it out.

A 4-3 fit plays well when the trumps are strong and a ruff can be taken in the shorter trump hand -- as in this deal.
