Fearing future swelling wedding bills POLL YESTERDAY’S It’s weekends like this one that make me realize that I have daughters, and that they won’t be little girls forever.

For one, we had a birthday party for two of them this weekend. My wife and I decided a great way to make the holiday season more chaotic was to have two children in December, one in early December and one on New Year’s Eve. It hardly seems possible that my second-born is now 9, or that her older sister is 11 and soon to be 12, closer to adulthood than to infancy. I know the next time I blink they’re going to be out of high school. At least I’ve still got the 3-year-old, who still shows a childlike willingness to refuse even the most reasonable of requests, like, “can I put your shoes on?”

And then there are all those wedding stories we’ve been running. The weekend Lifestyle cover was about wedding trends, followed by today’s cover story about the local wedding expo.

My own wedding was 15 years ago, and I don’t plan to have another. Although it still seems like a far-off dream that any of my little girls would ever get married – I mean, I’m not yet willing to accept that they might go on a date one day – it’s no longer an impossibility.

Then it occurs to me that the bride’s family usually foots the bill, and that I’ve got three potential brides.

I mean, look, I want my girls to be happy, but the more I think about it, the more it seems like white weddings could really

start to add up to a lot of red ink for the old man.

I’ve heard of people offering their children cash to skip the big wedding to-do and just elope. But that didn’t appeal to their mother, and I don’t think it will appeal to her daughters, either.

I guess I could start saving for these happy occasions/financial debacles now, but that seems like jumping the gun considering I still have to find a way to get them all through college.

Instead, I think the strategy I will use is denial – don’t consider that any of them will ever get married, or that I will ever be old enough to walk them down the aisle and give them away, let alone try to figure out how to pay for it.

But I guess if my fears come to pass – I age, my daughters grow up and get married, and I have to foot the bill – on balance, there are much worse problems I could have.

Heck, maybe it’s even something to look forward to. Other than the bills, of course.

SARASOTA, Fla. – Goodbye to death-defying feats – daring young men (and women) on the flying trapeze, whip-wielding lion tamers, human cannonballs. Goodbye to the scent of peanuts and popcorn, the thrill of three rings, the jaunty bum-bum-dadadada of circus music. Send out the clowns. The Big Top is coming down – for good.

On Saturday, officials of the company that owns the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus announced that it will close in May, ending a 146-year run that

dates back to a time before automobiles or airplanes or movies, when Ulysses S. Grant was president and minstrel shows were popular entertainment.

What killed the circus? There are many suspects: increased railroad costs. Costly court battles with animal rights activists that led to an end to elephant acts – and the fact that some people didn’t want to see a show without elephants.

But mostly, in an era of Pokemon Go, online role playing games and YouTube celebrities, the “Greatest Show on Earth” doesn’t seem so great.

Faranda’s Wedding Expo educates couples on latest options, trends

Shaw Media correspondent Patrick Ciannella is a groom-to-be on a mission.

The 26-year-old has a list of items to check off: a baker, a DJ, linens and a limo.

On Sunday, he showed up at Faranda’s Wedding Expo and worked his way through the vendors.

“His fiancée is out of town. I’m his mom, so we’re here with a list,” said Shannon Ciannella with a laugh.

Patrick, an NIU alum, is going to marry Tiffany Mills in the Terrace Room in Hopkins Park. They were engaged at homecoming.

“We’re both alumni – we met here,” he said.

The couple live in the Quad Cities, but are returning to DeKalb because of their connection with the city and its central location.

He said he enjoyed shopping for the baker. “We found a really good one,” he said.

Ciannella and nearly 300 other soon-to-be-weds navigated through about 45 vendors at the event.

Jaclyn Cox coordinated the expo.

She recently stared working at Faranda’s, specializing in event planning, and the event was a timely project for her.

“I’m a bride myself, so I’m excited to see all the brides and have an opportunity to see all the vendors, showcase Faranda’s and the fashion show and to showcase Alexis Kay and Ducky’s,” Cox said.

Alexis Kay and Ducky’s Formalwear are two formalwear businesses in DeKalb. She will have her July wedding reception at Faranda’s.

“That’s actually how I met Bill [McMahon, Faranda’s owner]. I came here to meet about my wedding, and it was the same time I was graduating,” she said. The discussion led to her new job.

Brandice Holland of Amboy attended the expo with her mother and with her maid of honor. She’s planning a fall wedding and already has her bridal gown picked out. Her colors will be burgundy and gray.

“It seems this year it’s been a lot of gray, plum and navy for popular colors,” said Tracy Grimes, sales associate at Ducky’s. “Last summer it was coral, so we’ll see what this summer brings.”

Grimes said that although Ducky’s offers some bridesmaid dress options, the business focuses on menswear.

Dawn Caltagerone, owner of Alexis Kay Designs, said that brides are moving away from strapless gowns.

“They’re favoring more shoulders in gowns, some capped sleeves and a lot of lace,” Caltagerone said. “There’s a lot of beading on some of the gowns.

I’d say [the women] are divided between a ball gown, an A-line or more of a fit-and-flair – but not the extremely tight mermaid style anymore.”

She said that brides also are favoring ivory, champagne and other “antique” colors. “We’re starting to see more of the blush come in again and rose-gold,” Caltagerone said.

She said many brides request custom dresses. A custom dress can take about six months to create, but some brides already have planned ahead and ordered dresses for December of 2018.

SANDWICH – Fifteen-year-old Joshua Frosch, a freshman at Sandwich High School, loves learning and reading about anything having to do with history.

On Jan. 20, Frosch will witness history being made. He will be in Washington, D.C., attending the presidential inauguration ceremony.

Forty-three Sandwich High School band and chorus members, five chaperones and the band’s director, Justin Heinekamp, will travel to Washington, D.C., to attend the presidential inauguration ceremony and participate in the 2017 Inauguration Heritage Festival.

Frosch, a baritone saxophonist, has been looking forward to the trip since his sister traveled with the high school four years ago for the last presidential inauguration.

“I’ve always wanted to see D.C., and I’ve been looking forward to going myself,” Frosch said. “I love all the history there, the monuments and the museums. I’ll be there when history is being made. Being able to go there with my friends and play music at the festival makes it more fun and interesting.”

The students will travel by coach bus to the nation’s capital, bringing their instruments and sheet music with them. Large percussion instruments will be provided for use during the festival, but the school will bring smaller percussion instruments, such as triangles, tambourines and their mallets and drumsticks.

Participating in the 2017 Inauguration Heritage Festival will allow the students to have an on-stage mini clinic with written and recorded comments from a panel of three nationally acclaimed adjudicators, a commemorative gift and a professional recording of their performance.

Heinekamp said the school’s music department has a standing invitation to participate in the festival. The students have been practicing the music, which includes Americana and folk songs, for the past three months in preparation for the festival.

“The presidential inauguration is an important event and is very historic, no matter which political side you’re on,” Heinekamp said. “Being able to witness the inauguration, see museums and monuments and be

After their musical performance, the students will attend an inaugural banquet at the National Conference Center. The banquet will include the festival’s award ceremony, dinner and dancing.

Sophomore Jaden Frantzen, 15, will

perform in both the choir as a soprano and the band on oboe. She said she is excited to go to Washington with her friends and to attend the banquet’s formal ball.

“Being able to perform in D.C., see the inauguration and attend the ball is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Frantzen said. “I can’t wait to see all of the monuments and museums and make lots of memories.”

During their six-day stay in Washington, the students also will visit

famous sites in the area, including Mount Vernon, Smithsonian Museum of American History, Newseum, Ford’s Theatre, Reagan Trade Center, Pentagon City Mall and possibly Arlington National Cemetery. They also will receive a guided tour around D.C., seeing the White House, the National Cathedral, Embassy Row and the Vietnam, Lincoln, Korean, World War II, Jefferson and Washington memorials.

Frosch said the place he is most looking forward to visiting is the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia, which has two hangars featuring thousands of aviation and space artifacts, including a Concorde and the space shuttle Discovery.

Freshman bass clarinetist Katelin Csiszer, 15, and her brother, senior trombonist Brandon, 18, will both perform with the band in the festival.

“We’ve been practicing our music for months, and it’s exciting to think that our trip is almost here,” Katelin Csiszer said. “We’ve been looking forward to this trip for a long time. We can’t wait to go.”

The choir’s director, Erin Manning, is unable to travel because of her pregnancy, but she said she is proud of the students for their hard work and can’t wait to see pictures when they return.

“It’s a big honor to go and perform during the festival and to be in Washington, D.C., for the presidential inauguration,” Heinekamp said. “This trip embodies what we want to do as teachers, as a school: it combines education, history and fun. The kids will remember this trip for the rest of their lives, that they went to D.C., played music and saw the inauguration.”

LOCAL BRIEF DeKalb city seeks members for airport advisory board

that the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport continues to be a regional asset.

The board will have seven members DeKALB – Mayor John Rey is seeking four people to serve on the city’s Airport and include DeKalb County Administrator Adivsory Board, following the passage of Gary Hanson, DeKalb County Economic an amendment to restructure the board’s Development Corporation Executive Diduties. The newly designed board will be rector Paul Borek and DeKalb Chamber of business-oriented, charged with ensuring Comerce executive director Matt Duffy.

The board will meet monthly. Its members must live in the city of DeKalb.

Applicants are encouraged to have community and leadership roles. Those interested in the volunteer position must submit an application along with a letter of interest explaining why they wish to be involved and any relevant exprience

or qualification that could serve the board.

Irene M. Nehring, of Hinckley, IL passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2017 in Shabbona, IL. She was born on August 12, 1924 in Steward, IL, the daughter of Francis John “Frank” and Edna (Johnson) Edge.

She was a graduate of the 1943 class of Hinckley High School.

She was employed by Illinois Bell Telephone Company in Chicago, IL and worked in the war effort at a Montgomery, IL plant

manufacturing airplane parts for WWII. She was united in marriage to Gerald Clark Nehring on April 27, 1946 and they made their home in Hinckley, IL. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Irene was an avid reader who served many years on the Squaw Grove Public Library Board.

She enjoyed golfing, doing handwork and gardening.

SPRINGFIELD – If last week’s action is any indication, the Democratic and Republican leaders of the Illinois Senate are serious about trying to bust the state’s 18-month budget deadlock – quickly.

Democratic Senate President John Cullerton and Minority Leader Christine Radogno negotiated an ambitious, multi-part plan to end a nearly twoyear battle between Democrats and GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner, which has forestalled an agreed-upon annual state spending plan since 2015.

Promising to act on a package by month’s end, they introduced 13 measures Wednesday that included non-budget-related sweeteners for both sides. By Thursday, they had been rapidly assigned public committee hearings.

The package includes Democrat-friendly ideas such as a minimum-wage hike and an income-tax increase – which many in both parties agree is necessary to pare down a multibillion-dollar deficit. But it also seeks to meet Rauner’s demands for measures he said will improve the business and political climate. There’s legislation to freeze local property taxes,

Chicago police officer fatally shoots fleeing gunman

CHICAGO – A police officer confronted by a fleeing gunman suspected of shooting three people fatally shot the man early Sunday, Chicago police said.

Officers were on routine patrol in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the city’s west side when they heard gunshots and began chasing a 34-year-old man, police said.

“Officers initiated a foot pursuit during which the offender ran to an alley and confronted them with a weapon. As a result of this action, one of the pursuing officers discharged his weapon striking the offender multiple times,” police said in a statement.

Officers requested medical aid for the suspect, police said. The man was later

a must-have for Rauner, and to tighten rules on when injured workers may make claims under the workers’ compensation law.

The Senate put one Rauner wish on the books already. It voted unanimously last week to limit, by Senate rule, its leaders to 10 years at the helm. Radogno promises to expand the idea with a constitutional amendment in the future.

Not only is the timeline aggressive – the Senate is scheduled to be in Springfield only three more days this month, including one reserved for the governor’s State of the State address – but so is the end game. The package of bills includes a pension-reform plan to reduce more than $111 billion in underfunded retirement accounts – a solution that has long eluded lawmakers.

The outstanding question is whether a Senate-approved deal would ultimately pass muster with Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, who has refused to entertain Rauner’s pro-business agenda as part of budget talks.

Here’s a look at other major pieces of the legislation some in the Capitol have nicknamed the “grand bargain”: • Income tax increase: The personal income tax would jump from 3.75 percent to 4.95 percent, a plan to generate $4.1 billion a year. With spending cuts,

Democrats argue, that could eliminate what the governor’s office estimates will be a $5.3 billion deficit on the June 30 end of the fiscal year.

• Borrowing to pay down debt: The legislation would allow Illinois to borrow $7 billion by selling bonds to pay off overdue bills, which on Friday totaled $10.7 billion. The loan would get the state back to paying vendors and service providers within 30 days of receiving their bills.

• Covering costs: The plan includes $694 million to cover expenses for the first half of 2017 for seven agencies, including prisons and the Human Services Department. A six-month, temporary budget agreed to last summer expired Jan. 1, and the state is back to operating without appropriations.

• Pension reform: The proposal would eliminate pensions for future legislators. It aims to save up to $1 billion a year by offering what Cullerton has termed “consideration” – essentially a choice between how future pay raises figure into retirement income or whether pensioners receive cost-of-living adjustments in retirement.

• Teacher pensions: The measure would move Chicago’s responsibility for paying the employer’s portion of teachers’ pensions to the state – a $215 million obligation for 2017 alone.

That would remedy a long-running complaint about fairness from cashstrapped city officials, since the state already picks up the employer portion for teachers outside the city.

• Gambling expansion: Similar to a contentious proposal from previous years, the plan would create a landbased casino in Chicago and add riverboat casinos in Lake County, Rockford, the south suburbs of Chicago, Danville, and in Williamson County, in southern Illinois, as well as giving horse racing tracks a piece of the action by permitting slot machines at Arlington Heights, Cicero and Collinsville.

• Workers’ compensation: Democrats have argued they made important changes to the injured-workers program in 2011 and that the insurance industry hadn’t caught up to those cost-saving measures. This plan would further restrict claims when injuries are accidents, set maximum compensation rates and limit physical therapy, among other things.

• Minimum wage: The minimum wage would increase from $8.25 an hour to $9 on July 1, then by 50 cents each year until 2021, when it will be $11. According to the U.S. Labor Department, the wage exceeds $8.25 in 21 places outside Illinois, including the District of Columbia, which is tops at $11.50.

NEW YORK – The outgoing CIA director charged on Sunday that Donald Trump lacks a full understanding of the threat Moscow poses to the United States, delivering a public lecture to the president-elect that further highlighted the bitter state of Trump’s relations with American intelligence agencies.

John Brennan’s pointed message on national television came just five days before Trump becomes the nation’s 45th president amid lingering questions about Russia’s role in the 2016 election even as the focus shifts to the challenges of governing.

“Now that he’s going to have an opportunity to do something for our national security as opposed to talking and tweeting, he’s going to have tremendous responsibility to make sure that U.S. and national security interests are protected,” Brennan said on “Fox News Sunday,” warning that the president-elect’s impulsivity could be dangerous.

“Spontaneity is not something that protects national security interests,” Brennan declared.

Trump, who has unleashed a series of aggressive tweets against the U.S. intelligence community and his political rivals in recent weeks, did not respond to Brennan’s criticism.

Vice President-elect Mike Pence said on “Fox News Sunday” that he hopes Lewis will change his mind and attend.

Priebus later acknowledged that conservatives – led by Trump himself – spent years questioning Obama’s eligibility to serve as president, suggesting he was not born in the United States.

Trump has done little to encourage unity in recent days, instead inflaming tensions with his critics through a series of tweets. The incoming president tweeted Saturday that Lewis should pay more attention to his “crime ridden” Atlanta-area district, adding that the civil rights leader was “all talk.”

MLK Jr. reminds us even now, ‘We cannot walk alone’ The nation will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, a good time to reflect on the work of the country’s greatest civil rights leader and on our current state of race relations.

Service, nonviolent protest, and insistence that his fellow man be treated with dignity are big parts of King’s legacy.

Although he accomplished tremendous things in his all-too-brief 39 years before his 1968 assassination, if King were alive today, he would say that work remains incomplete.

A great deal of progress has been made.

Regardless of one’s political affiliation, this week marks the end of two terms for President Barack Obama, the nation’s first black president who is a testament to where we’ve come as a nation since the 1960s.

There is more justice, but there still is injustice. There is peace, but that peace sometimes is marred by violence.

There is acceptance, but there still is bigotry, anger, ignorance and fear.

There are instances of overplayed racial politics, and there is a refusal to listen from the other side when race is a factor in matters, whether the subject is police misconduct or poorly chosen words or deeds.

There still is a wide perception gulf in this country too many refuse to traverse.

There still are too many instances when an individual is judged not by the content of his character but by the color of his skin, when one of such an instance is too many.

There are people still trapped in poverty, in neighborhoods with failing schools, preyed upon by drug-dealing gang members with little hope for the promise of the dream Martin Luther King envisioned.

The solutions will not be black solutions or white solutions.

They will not be Democrat or Republican solutions.

The continued insistence on these divisions, the bickering, the choosing of sides leads us toward no solutions whatsoever.

King cautioned against “drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred,” reminding us the destinies of blacks and whites in America were intertwined rather than separate.

“And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom,” King said in his most famous speech.

“We cannot walk alone.”

Ten questions to determine Trump’s fate

Friday, President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn in. More than most presidencies, uncertainty (for some, panic) may be the defining sentiment as the country embarks on a journey that may test America’s democratic principles, decency and common sense.

We have elected someone who has very little of any of those three precious commodities. Honesty demands that we all concede we have no idea whether he’ll be among the worst presidents (perhaps not even finishing his term), remarkably mediocre or a surprising success. Regardless, we do think the following will determine the course of the presidency:

1. Do the multiple power centers and presence of so many people new to government create a chaotic, dysfunctional White House? To be fair, other presidents

She would listen to me as a first-year, second-year, and third-year law school student as I feared a tort law class, or a contract law class, or especially a tax law class!

Every day she listened and gave me sage wisdom. After I graduated and went on active duty in the U.S. Army, she and Bob welcomed me into their home when I was on leave.

9. Can he be a mourner in chief? Like it or not, the president has become a source of empathy and reassurance in times of tragedy. Trump cares little for others’ feelings - if he even recognizes they have them. As a candidate he could holler “I was right!” when a terrorist attack like Orlando happened. As president, that reaction will be disastrous.

On a more personal level, can he comfort grief-stricken parents or calm survivors after a natural disaster?

10. Will Trump learn to stop dividing Americans? Trump won by pitting work-

ing-class whites against immigrants and “elites.” His rhetoric served to inflame passions after police shootings. He enters office with one of the worst approval ratings in history. Unless he can unite rather than subdivide and inspire rather than berate, his approval will sink, he’ll lose his political mojo and his party will suffer in the midterms.

To the Editor: On Tuesday, my friend Ronald Swanson texted me to call him.

I had just awakened, and I feared for the worst. My wife held my hand as I called Ron. What I feared was true. Ron’s father, Robert J. Swanson (Bob to me and his friends), had passed away. I cried on and off for the rest of the day.

It is not easy for me to get to DeKalb these days as I spend much of my time in Texas, but I felt I needed to see Bob over the holidays. I was glad I got to see him

listening to how Bob’s golf game went the previous day. Being with them was like being home. When I got married, Bob and Carole were at the wedding, and they adopted Christina as they had adopted me.

They never missed a birthday, anniversary, or a Christmas with a card or a phone call.

Bob and Carole Swanson of Malta were simple people who loved, laughed and cared about each other and their family so much, and they opened themselves up to a kid from a suburb of Chicago like he was their son, me.

DAILY CHRONICLE University of Illinois Extension staff and volunteers will offer a variety of educational and recreational activities for the whole family at Winterfest 2017 on Saturday in Genoa.

The Extension and DeKalb County Forest Preserve partner each year to offer a day for families to get out, have fun and explore an enjoyable destination.

Winterfest will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Natural Resource Education Center in Russell Woods Forest Preserve, located one mile west of Genoa on Route 72.

“The horse-drawn wagon rides through the preserve are our big attraction,” Extension Educator Peggy Doty said in a news release. “The draft

The morning will start indoors at the center’s bird-viewing window, where Doty will share some tips for feeding and identifying local winter birds. At 10 a.m. there will be several activities.

There will be a guided family hike through the forest preserve followed by a program at 11 a.m. about the woodpeckers found in Illinois.

Doty will present a brief overview of some of the native wildlife followed by an Un-Nature Nature Trail walk for the whole family. Also starting at 10 a.m. and running until 11:30 a.m. is the popular homemade candlemaking for children as well as face painting.

From 10 a.m. through 2 p.m., there

will be ongoing make-and-take crafts and a digital scavenger hunt for the tech-savvy naturalists.

At 11 a.m., join Sarah Tobias for story time in the Little Seeds Library.

The horse-drawn wagon rides are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Finally, for all those outdoor adventurers, Jason Thompson will share his years of tracking knowledge for all levels.

Families can end the day with a final hike through the forest led by University of Illinois staff.

The Genoa Prairie Gems 4-H Club will offer its annual fundraising lunch and snack sale. The rest of the day is free but donations are accepted to cover materials.

350Kishwaukee to discuss tar sands pipeline proposal

DeKalb County’s climate crisis organization, 350Kishwaukee, will host a meeting Tuesday to discuss the announcement by

Enbridge, the foreign pipeline company, to build a new pipeline to carry crude tar sands oil to run within one mile of DeKalb along Nelson Road.

The announcement appeared in the company’s December Investor Briefing and will parallel the existing tar sands pipeline running through Boone, DeKalb, LaSalle and Livingston counties.

Dave Davis, co-leader of 350Kishwaukee, will provide training on how to intervene in the legal pipeline approval process, which is handled through the Illinois Commerce Commission.

Barbs drop first 2 of home tournament, will wrap up against Batavia

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – After suffering a 63-32 defeat to Boylan Catholic in the early game, the DeKalb Barbs lost again to Burlington Central, 42-40 in overtime, to go 0-2 on the opening day of the Martin Luther King tournament at DeKalb High School.

The Barbs came out playing strong and took a 16-12 lead into the dressing room at halftime.

But in the second half, the Rockets,

led by Kathryn Schmidt, were able to come back and tie the game at 35 with 1:28 remaining.

Neither team scored in that time, and the game went into overtime. The Barbs got a 3-pointer from Uriah Hegwood to start, but Schmidt’s five overtime points gave the Rockets a twopoint advantage.

Jackie Rapp’s 3-point shot at the buzzer rolled around the rim before dropping out, leaving the Rockets with the victory.

“We were playing too tentative in

the first half,” Rocket coach Mark Smith said. “We were afraid of making mistakes. But things turned around for us when we decided to let it all hang out and just play basketball. It’s got to be more like an open gym situation.

Just play basketball like you’re used to playing.”

Schmidt led the Rockets with 25 points, while Rapp led DeKalb with 12.

“We lost by a lot to Boylan,” DeKalb coach Elliot Whitefield said. “The talent level is different for us. Boylan is one of the better teams in the tourna-

ment, and Burlington and us are towards the bottom. But as you continue to lose, the games get more competitive and we often get left behind. We need to compete. We take too many plays off.

And when you’re the less talented team on the court, you need to win the intangibles. The hustle and loose balls, those kinds of things.”

When the tournament continues Monday, Burlington Central will be back in the winner’s bracket and will take on Huntley. The Barbs will tip off against Batavia at 9 a.m.

BURLINGTON – A 13-point run early gave the Genoa-Kingston boys basketball team control against Kaneland.

A seven-point run – plus some timely free-throw shooting – helped the Cogs regain it late in a 58-52 win over the Knights on Saturday at the Burlington Central Martin Luther King Jr. Classic.

The Cogs lost earlier in the day, 7770, to the host Rockets and will play in the third-place game at 3 p.m. Monday.

Kaneland faced Hamsphire after the G-K game, losing, 81-60.

The fourth quarter went back-andforth between the two clubs, but a 7-0 run to close the third for Genoa-Kingston (11-8) meant the Cogs spent most of the quarter with a four to six-point lead. The Knights (4-12) made it 46-44 with 3:33 left on a 3-point shot by Kyle Stuart.

The Cogs – who had only about a 90-minute break between their two games – pushed the lead to three on a free throw by Bailey Foley. Then Stuart missed a 3-pointer for the Knights.

Justin McNeal then earned a trip to the line, making both to push the lead to five, and the Cogs never led by less than four again.

“We only had an hour, hour-and-20minute breather, then we had to dig deep and get through another tough opponent,” G-K coach Corey Jenkins said. “They’re very disciplined and run their stuff to a T. But we made our free throws down the stretch. Zach Miller hasn’t missed a free throw in three games in this tournament so far.”

Miller has made 22 free throws in a row, spanning four games, and scored 20 to lead the Cogs while going 8 for 8 from the line, including 6 for 6 in the

fourth. The Cogs only attempted three field goals in the final frame, making two of them. They were 15 for 20 from the line as a team.

“We had definitely fought through a lot of stuff,” Miller said. “A bunch of players on our team are sick, so we definitely had a hard time there. But we got the win.”

The teams went back-and-forth through the first quarter-plus of play – the Knights were the first team to scored four or more points in a row when they closed the first quarter with a layup by Dan Franck and opened the second with one by Blake Feiza to take an 11-9 lead. But the Cogs scored the next 13 points and went into halftime up, 25-19.

Kaneland took the lead at 33-32 in the third, but then the Cogs rolled off seven straight and never trailed again.

“It was like we were playing with a 10-point lead instead of a 10-point deficit,” Conroy said. “We came out with a little fire in the third quarter, which is a big thing we’ll take away because we normally start really slow in the third quarter. But today we did not, we started out a lot faster.”

By the numbers: Franck finished with 16 for the Knights, with Jake Hed scoring eight. Bailey Foley scored 14 for Genoa-Kingston, Justin McNeal scored 12 and Klint Wewetzer grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Feiza had a team-high six boards for Kaneland.

Beyond the stats: Feiza and Franck were the only players to score for the Knights in the first half.

sports@daily-chronicle.com Levi Bradley scored all 12 of his points in the second half and ignited a 17-0 run as the Northern Illinois University men’s basketball team defeated Bowling Green, 69-52, Saturday for its second straight road win.

The Huskies (11-6 overall, 3-1 Mid-American Conference) led most of the first half and were up, 33-31, when a bucket from Bradley opened a 17-0 NIU run.

Jaylen Key added a layup off glass, senior Dontel Highsmith converted an old-fashioned three-point play, Bradley added a three-point play and a corner triple as the Huskies led, 52-37. The run continued as Bradley knocked down a pair from the line and Key added another basket to give NIU a 19-point lead with 7:39 left.

Highsmith finished with nine points, including a perfect 5 of 5 from the field.

Bowling Green (7-10, 1-3) cut the NIU advantage back to 11, but the Falcons got no closer as the Huskies cruised home to the road victory.

NIU will return home Tuesday as the Huskies begin a three-game homestand when they host Miami (Ohio) at 7 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Toledo tied the game on a 3 with 3:26 left, but Glenn got a putback with 3:07 left to give the Huskies the lead for good. Toledo got to within 73-71 and had the ball but missed a jumper.

Lehman responded with a layup to push the lead back to four with 14 seconds left after the Huskies ran the clock down.

Sycamore wins regional, DeKalb’s season ends: Sycamore rolled a 6,283 as a team, beating Rockford East by 113 pins and claiming the Class A Oregon Regional.

Trevor Smith took third overall for the Spartans, rolling a 1,345 series. Lucas Wright was sixth with a 1,291 and Austin Verheage was ninth with a 1,259.

Nicklaus Eberly rolled an 1,159 for DeKalb, missing out on a sectional berth by 12 pins. The Barbs rolled a 5,406 as a team to take sixth, 499 behind Freeport in the fourth and final qualifying spot.

The Spartans advance to the Vernon Hills Sectional at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The Barbs close the tournament with a game against Normal Community at 9:30 a.m. Monday and then against Normal West at 2:30 p.m.

Cogs roll at Woodstock: Genoa-Kingston knocked off the Blue Streaks, 57-33, after building a 41-15 lead at the half.

The Cogs (14-3) were led by Julie Galauner, who scored 23, and Jesi Nay, who scored 21. They combined on 10 3-pointers.

Lindsey, Northwestern roll to easy victory against Hawkeyes The ASSOCIATED PRESS EVANSTON – Scottie Lindsey scored 22, Bryant McIntosh had 20 and Northwestern rolled to a convincing 89-54 win over Iowa on Sunday.

Lindsey had a career-high eight rebounds, while McIntosh, who was honored before the game for scoring his 1,000th career point Jan. 5 against Minnesota, shot an efficient 9 for 11 from the field and added 10 assists for his first double-double this season.

Northwestern (15-4, 4-2 Big Ten) opened the contest with a quick 8-0 advantage and seldom wavered from there.

Iowa nearly closed the gap in the first half, cutting the deficit to three, but the Wildcats quickly answered with a 14-1 run.

The Wildcats have won three straight. Their last conference victory of 20 or more points came in a 98-59 rout Feb. 27 against Rutgers.

Iowa (11-8, 3-3) entered Sunday averaging 83 points a game, but was stifled

from start to finish, shooting just 35.3 percent.

Peter Jok, who led the Big Ten with 22.9 points per game, was held to four points, snapping a streak of 22 games where he scored in double figures.

It marks the Hawkeyes’ second defeat this season of 30 or more, as Iowa lost, 74-41, on Nov. 25 to then-No. 6 Virginia.

Northwestern outrebounded Iowa, 39-24, and holds a plus-23 rebounding margin over its three-game winning streak.

Ohio St. 72, Michigan St. 67: At Columbus, Ohio, JaQuan Lyle led the way with 22 points and all five starters scored in double figures as the Buckeyes beat Michigan State in one of team’s most complete games thus far.

Lyle knocked down 5 of 7 shots from beyond the 3-point line as Ohio State (11-7, 1-4 Big Ten) pulled away and held off the Spartans down the stretch.

Indiana (12-6, 2-3) had only one turnover in the first 16 minutes and finished with just 11.

Rutgers (11-8, 0-6), meanwhile, committed 21 turnovers and was outscored, 33-10, in transition. Indiana finished with 14 steals, easily a season best.

Corey Sanders scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half for the Scarlet Knights.

Loyola 77, Missouri St. 71: At Chica-

go, Aundre Jackson scored 22 points, Milton Doyle had 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, and Loyola beat Missouri State.

Jackson made two free throws with 2:49 to go and, after Missouri State was whistled for a charge, Doyle made a pull-up jumper to cap a 10-0 run for a 67-60 lead.

Loyola hit 8 of 10 free-throw attempts in the final 1:04 to hold on.

Donte Ingram sank four 3-pointers and scored 17 points for Loyola (13-6, 3-3 Missouri Valley), which was 5 of 13 from distance.

Doyle entered averaging 29 points, nine rebounds and 4.5 assist in his past two games, and he has scored 10-plus in 20 straight games.

Loyola erased an 11-point halftime deficit to improve to 9-1 this season at Gentile Arena.

Rodgers leads Packers past Cowboys; Steelers top Chiefs The ASSOCIATED PRESS ARLINGTON, Texas – Aaron Rodgers threw a 36-yard pass to a toe-dragging Jared Cook on the sideline, and Mason Crosby kicked a 51-yard field goal as time expired, sending the Packers to the NFC championship game with their eighth straight win while thwarting a huge Dallas rally in a 34-31 victory in the divisional round of the playoffs Sunday.

The throw on the run from Rodgers to Cook – confirmed on review – wasn’t nearly as debatable as Dez Bryant’s famous catch that wasn’t in the Cowboys’ divisional round loss to Green Bay two years ago.

Cook kept both feet inbounds with a knee just above the ground out of bounds.

And it came after the Cowboys tied the game twice in the final 5 minutes behind rookie sensations Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott in their playoff debuts.

It was the third field goal of more than 50 yards in the final 1:38 – two from Crosby and one from Dallas’ Dan Bailey. And Crosby had to make the winner twice after Dallas coach Jason Garrett called timeout before the first attempt.

Rodgers, who sparked last week’s wild-card win over the New York Giants with a Hail Mary before halftime, is headed to an MVP showdown with Atlanta’s Matt Ryan next Sunday.

Steelers 18, Chiefs 16: At Kansas City Missouri, Chris Boswell setting an NFL playoff record with six field goals, a stingy Pittsburgh defense for most of Sunday night, and a multitude of mistakes by Kansas City sent the Steelers into the AFC championship game.

The Steelers needed to hold off a last-ditch threat by the Chiefs before advancing to face New England next Sunday night for a spot in the Super Bowl. The Patriots won at Pittsburgh, 27-16, on Oct. 23, but Ben Roethlisberger was injured and didn’t play.

Spencer Ware’s 1-yard touchdown run took Kansas City within 18-16. The Chiefs at first converted the 2-pointer to tie it, but tackle Eric Fisher – the first overall selection in the 2013 draft – was penalized for holding. The next try failed.

With 2:43 remaining, Justin Gilbert misplayed the kick return and was tackled at the Pittsburgh 5. Roethlisberger hit Antonio Brown for 7 yards on third down and Pittsburgh then ran out the clock, securing a ninth straight victory for the Steelers. The Chiefs have not won a home playoff game since 1994, losing five in a row.

The scoring started furiously in the opening minutes, then the game became a kicking exhibition by Boswell, who also had six field goals in the regular season against Cincinnati. And Bell added a team-record 170 yards rushing to the 167 he had in a win over Miami last week.

Wild take sole possession of 1st in Western Conference

mlazerus@suntimes.com The Blackhawks have a simmering feud with the Nashville Predators.

They genuinely dislike the St. Louis Blues. They really hated the Vancouver Canucks. And even the mention of the Detroit Red Wings seems to make coach Joel Quenneville’s mustache twitch involuntarily.

But despite three straight playoff meetings, despite geography, despite the hockey history between the two cities, and despite the NHL’s emphasis on divisional play, there just isn’t much heat to the Hawks series with the Minnesota Wild. Calling it a rivalry isn’t even fair, especially with the Hawks bouncing the Wild from the playoffs in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

The Wild certainly think of the Hawks as the team to beat, but the Hawks – and their fans – don’t seem to think of the Wild much at all.

“I would say if you asked Minnesota people, they would probably say Chicago is one of their rivals,” Quenneville said. “But you’ve got a point there. I still think there’s a lot of respect, both teams.”

The Hawks might not hate the Wild, but they have little choice but to respect them. Minnesota rallied for a 3-2 victory Sunday night, taking over sole possession of first place in the Western Conference in the first meeting of the year between the two teams. The Wild are now a preposterous 17-1-1 in their past 19 games and have beaten the

Hawks in eight straight regular-season meetings (the Hawks, of course, have won all three playoff series).

“To beat this team eight times in a row is really something,” said firstyear Wild coach Bruce Boudreau, whose Ducks ran afoul of the Hawks in the 2015 conference final. “I don’t understand how you could do it. I wish I would have had that knowledge a couple years ago. [But] it’s a new year. And it’s just one in a row right now.”

For the Hawks, a hard-fought loss against a red-hot team was a big step up from Friday’s disastrous 6-0 loss to another red-hot team, the Washington Capitals. But it didn’t ease the frustration much.

“Two good hockey teams – both of them are playing really well at this time of year,” Patrick Kane said. “Good way for us to judge ourselves, where we’re at. It might be a bit of a wake-up call to see how good we really are.”

Kane – who was everywhere all night, double-shifting on the fourth line with the Hawks dressing seven defensemen and posting a career-high 12 shots on goal in 27 minutes of ice time – staked the Hawks to a 2-0 lead with a goal early in the first and another early

in the second.

But the Wild didn’t get to the top of the standings by accident. Nino Niederreiter (on a power play) and Chris Stewart scored five minutes apart in the second to tie it at 2. Then, 4:08 into the third period, Marco Scandella’s shot from the point took a big carom off the end boards and bounced right to Jason Pominville on the far side for an easy goal and a 3-2 Minnesota lead.

Quenneville was fuming about the first two goals,but blamed his defensemen, not his goalie.

“I can say I didn’t like the third goal, as well,” he said. “But the other two were like cardinal sins.”

Then Wild then did what the Wild do, which is turn a wide-open game into a defensive slog, holding the Hawks to a mere five shots on goal in the third period. Devan Dubnyk finished with 33 saves.

So it might not be much of a rivalry, but it’s sure as heck become a fair fight.

“We have to find a way to stop the run,” Quenneville said of the eightgame regular-season streak. “Tonight, we had the greatest opportunity you’d have. We have to wait again. We’re aware they’ve put us in a tough spot.”

Bulls top Grizzlies without Wade

jcowley@suntimes.com MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Dwyane Wade signing came with a cost, and not just the $23.2 million the veteran guard will be collecting this season alone.

No, it’s the cost of the soon-to-be 35-year-old being a huge influence on a Bulls locker room that sorely needed a championship presence versus resting Wade’s knees and possibly costing themselves games in the standings.

That was on full display yet again Sunday, as Wade didn’t make the trip to Memphis after playing 32 minutes in the home win over New Orleans on Saturday afternoon. Not that the Bulls needed him, beating the Grizzlies, 108104, and again getting back to the .500 mark at 21-21.

The game against the Grizzlies was the fifth game Wade missed so far this season. Four of the five were because of back-to-backs, while he missed the Jan. 2 game against Charlotte with swelling in his left knee. The Bulls have lost only two of the games without Wade.

They usually have Jimmy Butler to thank for that, and while Butler was

big down the stretch, it was Doug McDermott who stepped up, scoring a career-high 31 points.

What’s now facing the Bulls, however, is with the standings in the Eastern Conference so fragile, what will Wade’s scheduled off-days look like as the second half of the season has started?

Wade has been limited in practices since early December, but Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg is hoping that last season’s model used by Wade in Miami means the Bulls will have his services for when it matters – down the stretch and hopefully into the playoffs.

“Again, what he offers to this locker room has been invaluable to the group,” Hoiberg said.

It definitely has been for Butler.

Wade has helped him lead, but also allowed Butler to continue making his climb to stardom. A fine line to walk by most three-time NBA champions.

“Jimmy’s a star,” Wade said. “We have two closers on this team, and when it’s not Jimmy, I’m pretty sure I’ve shown I know how to close games through the years.”

And that’s why the Bulls just have to accept rest days for Wade.

Dear Reader: The vaccine against HPV infection initially was created for females younger than 26 to reduce the risk of cervical cancer. Human papilloma virus, or HPV, has been shown to be the cause of virtually all cervical cancer cases in women. Thus, if you decrease the possibility of infection with HPV, you would decrease the rates of cervical cancer, a disease diagnosed in 12,000 to 13,000 women in the United States each year. That’s all for the good among females, but your question – a logical one – was about the benefit to males.

In men, HPV infection can lead to penile cancers, anal cancers and oral cancers. It has been estimated that 70 percent of cancers of the oropharynx are related to HPV. If that is the case, HPV-related cancers are diagnosed in about 11,000 men in the U.S. per year, so the vaccine would appear to have benefit for males as well.

The other benefit of the vaccine – for both men and women – is the prevention of genital warts. These warts are not life-threatening, but they’re more than a nuisance to the people who get them.

The Gardasil vaccine, the most common HPV vaccine, protects against four types of HPV. In addition to protecting against HPV types 16 and 18, which cause many HPV-related cancers, the vaccine also protects against types 6 and 11, which cause 90 percent of genital warts.

In addition, by giving your son the HPV vaccine, you also will decrease the likelihood the virus will be passed on to other people. Providing the vaccine to boys nationwide will lead to less HPV in the community, which will in turn lead to a decrease in cervical, penile, anal and oral cancers.

The biggest problem with the HPV vaccines is the rate of vaccinations. Only 6 of 10 adolescent girls have started the HPV vaccine series, and only 5 of 10 adolescent boys have started it. As there is a two- to three-shot regimen for these vaccines, I can understand if your son does not want to get the vaccine simply to prevent a hypothetical cancer or wart.

However, as a society, we vaccinate against many other illnesses at a much higher rate even when the incidence of those illnesses is quite low. HPV is a very common infection and leads to multiple cancers and genital warts. I’m glad your daughter received the vaccine. Your son should get it too.

DEAR ABBY am a 58-yearold female. My Jeanne mother passed Phillips away in my home almost exactly a year ago. I took care of her for the last three years of her life. After she died, my brother and his wife came to my home at 1:30 p.m. The funeral home didn’t arrive to pick her up until 8:30 that night.

Later that evening, after my mom was gone and my brother and his wife left, my daughter came to me and announced that my sister-inlaw secretly had taken pictures of Mom in the body bag on the stretcher as she was being wheeled out of my home. She didn’t know my daughter had seen her.

I am furious, horrified and hurt beyond description. My mother always liked to look nice and made a special effort to look good for a picture. The coroner had told me to go into another room when they were taking her because he said I wouldn’t want that as my last memory of her.

I have never said anything to my sister-inlaw, but I can’t seem to let this go. It’s killing me. Am I overreacting? Please, I need your advice. – Missing Mom Dear Missing Mom: I truly am sorry for your loss, but you may be overreacting. Not everyone grieves in the same way, and similarly, not everyone feels the same way about taking pictures of deceased loved ones. During Victorian times the practice was quite common.

I don’t know why your sister-in-law felt compelled to take the photos, but it could have been a gesture of love and respect. If you want to know why she did it, you calmly should ask her and let her explain.

Dear Abby: I have been seeing my boyfriend for about a year. He’s three years younger than I am, which hasn’t been an issue for us.

However, recently, because of work scheduling, I have been waiting at his house until he comes home and spending more time with his father. This week, let’s look at the candidates for the Yeh Bros. Best Bid Deal of the Year award from the International Bridge Press Association. (Unfortunately, all of the declarer-play candidates are too complicated for this length of column. Shortly, I will send them out to subscribers to my website: www.bridgeforeveryone. com.)

First, let’s see what a cruel game bridge can be. Sitting North-South were world champions Steve Robinson and Peter Boyd. The deal occurred in the Norman Kay Platinum Pairs last March in Reno.

Three clubs showed four controls: two aces, or one ace and two kings, or four kings. Three no-trump was natural and forcing. Four clubs was Puppet Stayman. Four spades guaranteed a five-card suit. Five hearts was an artificial slam-try in spades.

Six clubs was a grand-slam try. Seven clubs suggested a final contract. Seven hearts asked North to bid seven no-trump if he had clubs headed by the queen-jack.

Note that seven no-trump would have made if clubs had been 3-2, but seven spades was better.

Boyd won trick one with his heart ace, drew trumps and turned to clubs. When they split 4-1, South ruffed the fourth round, establishing a discard for his heart loser on the fifth club. But that only got him up to 12 tricks: five spades, two hearts, one diamond and four clubs. He also needed the diamond finesse, but that lost and the contract went down one.

East-West gained a lucky 11.5 out of 13 matchpoints.
