Atheists, forgers and divorced people POLL YESTERDAY’S I should have heeded the old maxim: Never discuss politics or religion in a column or over dinner in a public place.

My first column of 2017 got some negative feedback from two readers. Unthinkingly, I had lumped forgers, thrice-married people and atheists all in one sentence as not desirable.

I won’t apologize to the forgers, but atheists and people who marry and divorce more than once don’t deserve my criticism.

The letter writer, who is an atheist, explained that I must not know any, and that they are not “bad, ashamed or vile.”

She didn’t need to tell me. I had lunch with a young family friend Friday who mentioned she is an atheist, but did not comment on my column or any hurt that it may have caused.

For her graciousness, I am thankful. And to those offended, I apologize.

I have written about people of all religions and sexual preferences in the past, but not in an offensive manner. Except once, when I upset the LGBT community in the California city where we lived. My flippant remark not only upset some readers, but I learned the hard way that a close colleague in our newsroom was a lesbian, and it took a long time for us to become friends again.

More recently, I avoided commenting on the “deplorables,” as candidate Hillary Clinton characterized half the Donald Trump supporters. Sadly, I still receive Obama-bashing emails forwarded from who knows where, and the anti-Trump hate mail is flowing to my inbox even before he takes office.

Now I want to mention something on the lighter side. A letter was forwarded to me

While Barry probably didn’t know me, everybody on campus knew Barry. It was rumored that if you had a cause that needed support, you could go to Barry; and if he agreed with your cause, he would support it.”

That was all well and good, but then he continued: “On the other hand, if you needed a cause to support but didn’t have one, Barry had a whole pocketful of causes from which you were welcome to choose. Barry may take issue with that rumor, but I suspect there is more than a kernel of truth here.” It was signed The Hon. David T. Ready.

I am befuddled why someone who has been out of college 55 years and hardly knew me could say such a thing about a fellow Huskie.

I am trying to figure out who put him up to it, or whether it was meant to be tongue-incheek.

I guess it could have had a “kernel of truth” to it, but only way back then ...

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – It turns out the moon is older than many scientists suspected: a ripe 4.51 billion years old.

That’s the newest estimate, thanks to rocks and soil collected by the Apollo 14 moonwalkers in 1971.

A research team reported Wednesday that the moon formed within 60 million years of the birth of the solar system. Previous estimates ranged within 100 million years, all the way out to 200 million years after the solar system’s creation, not

The scientists conducted uranium-lead dating on fragments of the mineral zircon extracted from Apollo 14 lunar samples. The pieces of zircon were minuscule – no bigger than a grain of sand.

“Size doesn’t matter, they record amazing information nonetheless!” lead author Melanie Barboni of the University of California, Los Angeles, said in an email.

She noted that the moon holds “so much magic ... the key to understand how our beautiful Earth formed and evolved.”

Northern Illinois Farm Show marks 35th year

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – William Heinisch, sales manager of CSR Bobcat – a supply and rental company for Bobcat utility vehicles in DeKalb – said his company has attended the annual Northern Illinois Farm Show since 1993.

Over the years, decreases in agricultural producers and suppliers have led to a smaller event, but the two-day gathering at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center still has been an ideal place for agribusiness agents to build marketing relationships with area farmers and other companies, Heinisch said.

“That’s what most people come here for,” he said. “It’s always a good show in the winter since it’s a slower time for our business and allows us to show new products and innovations for the future.”

This year the two-day farm show, organized by the IDEAg Group, marks its 35th year in Northern Illinois. The show began Wednesday and concludes today.

IDEAg operations manager Wayne Koenig said that about 140 exhibitors were present for the beginning of the show Wednesday, and attendance so far was good. Most of the exhibits were within the basketball court and track areas of the center, but several tables were set up along the northern concourse of the building.

Jim Zenz, owner of Zenz Buildings, a DeKalb-based custom building group, has been an exhibitor at the farm show for more than 25 years and said that he has seen a decline in the number of vendors, remembering years where exhibitors filled all of the concourses and lower levels of the facility.

“This is the only farm show we take part in, so hopefully we can have a good turnout,” he said.

The event’s keynote presentation came from Art Littlefield – spokesman for Lincoln Financial Advisors in Naperville – who urged farmers to take appropriate measures to ensure landowner succession for generations.

Data provided by Littlefield show that about two-thirds of family farms will not successfully transfer their land from the first generation of farmers to the second. Of those that will succeed, 90 percent will not have a third-generation successor.

Littlefield recommended that landowners draft a will that confirms a successor and get any grounds retitled to a revocable living trust, which doesn’t have to go through a lengthy probate.

‘I JUST KIND OF FELL IN LOVE WITH THE PLACE’

Sycamore library director settles into position

SYCAMORE – Jesse Butz said he has found the “perfect blend” at the Sycamore Public Library – it’s big enough to have the resources to make an impact in the community, yet small enough where as the director he can interact with patrons every day.

“A lot of libraries are so big, you’re just tied up in an office,” he said. “But here, I can go out and be working one on one with them, yet be in [my office] writing a grant to try to do something more innovative.”

Butz, who had been the library’s head of adult services, was appointed as interim director after the board fired former Director Sarah Tobias in June. In November, he was tapped to take on the position permanently.

Butz began working at the library as an intern in 2012 while earning his master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“When I got here, I just kind of fell in love with the place,” he said.

Originally from Genoa, Butz earned his bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University and his associate’s degree from Kishwaukee College.

Library Board President Melissa Kendzora-Smith said Butz clearly stood out as the best candidate for the position.

“He hands down was the best applicant,” she said. “The fact that he already had been there and knew the staff and the library was an added bonus.”

One of Butz’s first major tasks as director was to plan the library’s budget for the upcoming year.

Butz said he worked with board members using a zero-based budgeting process to evaluate places where the library could cut costs based on previous spending.

“We worked our way from the ground up, deciding the absolute minimum that we needed to successfully manage the building,” he said. “We designed our budget around that num-

ber so we could request as fiscally responsible as we can.”

Kendzora-Smith said that although Butz still is in a transitional period, he has shown his understanding of the library’s needs and done a good job communicating with board members.

“He truly rebuilt the entire budget for the library; it was a huge process to break it all down,” she said. “The time he spent doing that and collaborating with the board, he was awesome.”

Another new approach has been seen in the library’s capital improvement plan.

The library is setting aside $15,000 this year for future projects such as replacing windows and air conditioning units and constructing a new parking lot, Butz said.

The goal is for capital improvement funds to grow over time and to be available when improvements are needed without the library having to borrow or detract from existing expenses.

“We can’t be in a position where the

windows are falling out onto the street or the air conditioner just, boom, exploded up on the roof,” Butz said. “It’s one of those things where it’s not the sexiest thing to be focused on, but it’s one of those that you absolutely have to be, otherwise you’re going to be in a big financial drain.”

Butz said another goal he has is to put together a friends of the library group to support the library and “lessen the burden on the taxpayer.”

“A lot of libraries have them, and we don’t,” he said. “And so we want to find a friends group who can help do fundraising in addition to the fundraising we’re going to do here at the library.”

Plans for the library to become its own taxing district with new boundaries were put on hold last year while the board searched for a new director.

Voters would have been asked via referendum if they supported a public library district for the city of Sycamore and neighboring areas that don’t have tax-supported libraries.

“The benefit is everybody has a library card, without restrictions,” Butz said.

Butz said board members wanted to wait until he got acclimated to his position and to do more community surveying before going forward.

The district boundaries as proposed were “quite massive” and still need to be legally defined, he said.

“We’re going to revisit it in the future, but it’s definitely on hold for now,” Butz said.

He said he enjoys library work, especially at a medium-sized library such as Sycamore’s, because it is never the same – every day brings something different.

“One of the things that I find amusing from being a librarian is that they picture bun-wearing shush-ers, like we’re sitting out there, we have our cardigans and we shush, and that’s what we do,” Butz said. “But the reality, it’s a pretty hopping place for the most part. I don’t think I’ve ever shushed anyone in my life.”

DeKALB – A developer is suing the city of DeKalb, claiming that he was not notified of a 2013 zoning change that made property he bought much less valuable.

Pete Occhipinti planned to add two floors of apartments above the vacant Campus Cinemas building, but he was denied permission after the zoning change. He now wants a judge to declare the zoning change void – reversing a city code amendment that required him to seek a special use permit with City Council approval.

Occhipinti filed the lawsuit against the city Friday; the council denied his request for a special use permit in November. Occhipinti wanted permission to add 22 one- and two-bedroom apartments to the former movie theater at 1015 Blackhawk Road.

The four-screen movie theater on the ground floor would have remained a theater but with reduced seating capacity, according to city documents.

The lawsuit alleges that the city did not notify Occhipinti before passing an

amendment during a June 2013 council meeting that changed the permitted land use for a district zoned for light commercial use.

It states that Occhipinti’s plans would have been allowed under the city code in place when he bought the property, and that he was not given an opportunity to object to the amendment because he was not notified about the public hearing.

City Attorney Dean Frieders said Wednesday that the city had not yet been served with the lawsuit, and he declined to comment about the case until the city could review it. A phone call to Occhipinti’s attorney, Mark Johnson, was not returned Wednesday.

The lawsuit also highlights comments from City Council members with concerns that the area already was too dense with residential buildings for another development in place.

City officials previously raised concerns that Occhipinti was unable to demonstrate that the structure would be capable of accommodating a two-story addition, among other issues.

A hearing is scheduled for April 3 at the DeKalb County Courthouse.

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Two women testified Wednesday that they were abused as children by a Genoa man over the course of several years, but the man took the stand to deny the allegations.

C.A. Barnett, 67, of the 300 block of North Sycamore Street in Genoa, was charged in 2012 C. A. with predatory criminal Barnett sexual assault of a child and criminal sexual abuse. The crimes allegedly involved three different children, but the trial only involves charges related to one victim.

A 21-year-old woman told the jury that Barnett had touched her inappropriately and made her touch him more than 20 times when she would stay at

his home as a child between the ages of 3 and 7. She said she only came forward about the abuse after learning that another family member had accused Barnett of similar crimes. She also said she confronted Barnett about the abuse.

Defense attorney Stephen Richards pointed out that the woman didn’t initially tell a Department of Children and Family Services interviewer about the abuse during an interview when she was 16. She also didn’t initially tell her father.

A female relative of the victim also testified that Barnett had touched her inappropriately.

Barnett took the stand Wednesday afternoon. He denied the allegations.

His wife also testified, and his brother testified to his character.

Charges related to the two other alleged victims are pending, according to court records. The trial is expected to conclude today.

Coco Chanel (1883-1971) is a well-known French fashion designer who changed the look of women’s clothes and jewelry, and created the famous perfume Chanel No. 5 during the 20th century.

But few know she also designed some chandeliers and other furnishings for her apartment and for customers. A rolled-arm sofa and a rock-crystal chandelier probably are her best-known pieces.

She included animal figures and mirrors in abundance. Colors like black, gold, brown, honey, beige and cinnabar were backgrounds for Coromandel folding screens and antique furniture. A famous Coco Chanel-designed gilt-metal and rock-crystal chandelier sold at New Orleans Auctions in 2016.

It was designed by Coco with Robert Goossens, a Parisian jeweler. The frame has interlocking hearts and ovals with large rockcrystal chunks hanging below.

Metal leaves covered the 12 light sockets. The impressive 40-inchhigh and 31-inch-diameter chandelier sold for $37,500. *** Q: I have three Mr. Peanut glass jars with “Planters,” a picture of Mr. Peanut and “75th anniversary” embossed on both sides.

They are about 8 1/4 inches tall and have lids. The dates 1861 and 1906 also are on the jars. What are they worth?

A: You’re reading one of the dates wrong. The 75th anniversa-

ry of Planters was in 1981. If you read 1981 upside down, it looks like 1861. The company started as Planters Nut and Chocolate Co. in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, in 1906. Mr. Peanut was adopted as a trademark in 1916. The company was bought by Standard Brands in 1961. Standard Brands merged with Nabisco in 1981.

Some of the Mr. Peanut jars have been reproduced. These jars sell for $5 to $10 each. *** Q: In the 1930-1950 period, would Minton dinnerware normally be found in middle-class or upper-middle-class homes?

Where might it have fit in the dinnerware hierarchy, compared to Royal Doulton, Spode or Wedgwood?

A: Minton dinnerware was owned by royalty, the wealthy and the upper middle class. In some homes, it was the “good” china used only on special occasions.

Minton was made in the Staffordshire region of England beginning in 1796. It became part of the Royal Doulton Tableware Group in 1968. The brand is now part of WWRD Holdings. Minton china is no longer made. *** Q: I have Currier & Ives’ “American Homestead Winter” with the original government copyright notice. I can’t find any information on the old copyright mark in the bottom left corner of the print that’s followed by the letters “HFA.” Do you know what this stands for?

Madigan re-elected as House speaker

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois House re-elected Michael Madigan on Wednesday to a 17th term as its leader, putting him on track to soon become the longest-serving statehouse speaker in modern U.S. history, and he pledged to help find a solution to the state’s ongoing budget stalemate.

For two years the Democratic-controlled Legislature has failed to secure a budget deal with Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, easily the top priority for the 100th General Assembly.

In one possible sign of an olive branch to Rauner, the Senate voted unanimously to limit leaders’ tenure to 10 years – the first time the chamber has ever taken that step.

One House Democrat took the rare step of not voting for Madigan, instead voting present, as a sign of his constituents’ exasperation with the deadlock in Springfield that many blame on the speaker.

The steely Democratic speaker has held the gavel for 32 of the past 34 years.

If he completes the new two-year term, he will eclipse a modern-day record set in the middle of the last century by a

Judge denies Lincolnshire right-to-work ordinance

LINCOLNSHIRE – A federal judge has struck down a right-to-work law in Lincolnshire aimed at organized labor, ruling that federal law pre-empts the local ordinance.

Judge Matthew Kennelly wrote in his ruling that only states have the power to enact laws that prohibit union security agreements, the Pioneer Press reported.

So called right-to-work legislation allows people to work for a company in union-protected positions without having to join the union or pay the complete share of union dues.

In 2015, Lincolnshire approved its ordinance, which doesn’t apply to public-sector jobs like firefighting or police service.

Doctor to lose medical marijuana clinics in Illinois

CARBONDALE – A doctor involved in an ongoing battle with the state over his certification of patients in Illinois’ medical marijuana program is planning to close his clinics in Marion and Orland Park.

Dr. Bodo Schneider announced Tuesday that he’ll close both locations of the Pied Pfeifer Compassionate Care Clinic on Feb. 17, The Southern Illinoisan reported.

WAUKEGAN – A suburban Chicago man who exchanged gunfire with police on a commuter train died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. That’s the preliminary finding of the Lake County Coroner’s Office that was revealed by Illinois State Police.

Authorities said Jamal Parks turned the gun on himself after shooting at “several officers” on the Metra train that was stopped in Deerfield on Friday and died of a single gunshot wound to the head.

The measures include an income tax increase, a hike in the minimum wage and corporate tax loophole closings, but also demands from Rauner’s agenda, including a property tax freeze and rules to reduce the cost workers’ compensation.

“The state needs a budget. Period,” Cullerton, 68, said after his re-election to a packed chamber that included Rauner. “This has become nearly as ridiculous as it is frustrating.”

Chicago veterans museum acquires Vonnegut art prints

CHICAGO – The National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago has acquired 31 screen prints by the American writer Kurt Vonnegut Jr. The museum announced the acquisition Tuesday. An exhibit of Vonnegut artwork is on display at the museum through May 6.

The late Indianapolis-born author is best known for his 1969 novel “Slaughterhouse-Five,” which is drawn from his World War II experiences. He later created a series of fine art prints.

Vonnegut enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and was deployed to fight overseas in Europe. He was captured at the Battle of the Bulge and served as a prisoner of war until 1945, when he returned to the United States and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Trump concedes Russia’s role in election hacking

The Associated Press NEW YORK – In a combative and freewheeling news conference, President-elect Donald Trump said for the first time Wednesday that he accepts Russia was behind the election year hacking of Democrats that roiled the White House race. Looking ahead, he urged Congress to move quickly to replace President Barack Obama’s signature health care law and insisted anew that Mexico will pay the cost of a border wall.

The hour-long spectacle in the marbled lobby of Trump’s Manhattan skyscraper was his first news conference since winning the election in early November, and the famously unconventional politician demonstrated he had not been changed by the weight of his victory.

He defiantly denied reports that Russia had collected compromising personal and financial information about him, lambasting the media for peddling “fake news” and shouting down a journalist from CNN, which reported on the matter. His family and advisers clapped and cheered him on throughout.

Trump’s transition has been shadowed by U.S. intelligence assessments that Russia not only meddled in the election, but did so to help him defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton. After spending weeks challenging that idea, Trump finally accepted at least part of the intelligence conclusions.

“As far as hacking, I think it was Russia,” Trump said, quickly adding that “other countries and other people” also hack U.S. interests. Still, he kept needling the intelligence agencies, saying it would be a “tremendous blot” on their record if officials were leaking information from his classified briefings.

Wednesday’s news conference initially was billed as a chance for Trump to answer questions about his plans for distancing himself from his sprawling, family-owned real estate and licensing business.

Lawyer Sheri Dillon stepped to the lectern midway through the event to announce that the president-elect was relinquishing control of the Trump Organization to his adult sons and an executive, as well as putting his business assets in a trust.

While new international business deals will be banned, the company will be allowed to start new projects in the U.S. The move appears to contradict a previous pledge by the president-elect. In a tweet last month, Trump said that “no new deals” would be done

while he was in office.

With dramatic flair, Trump aides piled stacks of manila folders on a table next to the lectern – in front of 10 American flags – before the news conference began. Trump said the folders contained documents he had signed formalizing the new business arrangements, though journalists were not able to view and independently verify the materials.

Some 250 journalists crammed into the Trump Tower lobby for the news conference, which was not only Trump’s first since the election, but his first since July.

Journalists shouted for his attention. At times, he skipped past questions he appeared to not want to answer, including an inquiry about whether he would keep in place sanctions Obama slapped on Russia in retaliation for the election-related hacking.

Until Wednesday, Trump had spent most of his two months as president-elect doling out policy pronouncements, attacks on critics and boasts about his victory in 140-character increments on Twitter.

His preferred mode of communication has left some of his positions vague – an approach that often is by Trump’s design.

Relatives of slain churchgoers confront gunman

CHARLESTON, S.C. – One by one, family members of nine slain black parishioners confronted Dylann Roof for the last time Wednesday, shouting at him, offering forgiveness and even offering to visit him in prison as he awaits execution for the slaughter.

The 22-year-old avowed white supremacist refused to meet their gaze and simply stared ahead, his head tilted down slightly as it had been for much of his trial.

“Dylann,” Janet Scott said quietly as she started speaking. “Dylann!

DYLANN!” she said, her voice rising.

Toward the end of her remarks, she said, “I wish you would look at me, boy.”

Scott, an aunt of 26-year-old Tywanza Sanders, the youngest victim killed in the massacre, demanded that Roof look at her as she talked about her nephew’s “great big heart,” which could not be donated because of the police investigation.

The final statements came a day after jurors sentenced an unrepentant Roof to death. The gunman had one final opportunity to ask for mercy but instead told jurors he still “felt like I had to do it.”

Roof also had an opportunity to speak but declined to say anything. He is the first person ordered executed for a federal hate crime.

Some of the relatives looked directly at Roof. Others chose to look at jurors, who did not have to be in court Wednesday but told the judge they wanted to

attend.

Sheila Capers, the sister-in-law of Cynthia Hurd, said she prayed for Roof’s soul to be saved.

“If at any point before you are sentenced and you’re in prison and you want me to come and pray with you, I will do that,” Capers said.

Felicia Sanders, who survived the attack, said she forgave Roof, repeating comments she made after the shooting.

But, she noted, Roof did nothing to save himself.

He served as his own attorney during the sentencing phase and never explained the massacre, expressed remorse or asked for his life to be spared.

Sanders brought the bullet-torn, bloodstained Bible she had with her on the night of the June 17, 2015. She told Roof he still lives in her head, and that when she hears a balloon pop or fireworks, it returns her to that night.

“Most importantly, I can’t shut my eyes to pray,” Sanders said.

On the night of the shooting, Roof sat through a 45-minute Bible study session at the black church known as Mother Emanuel with 12 others.

He opened fire as they stood and closed their eyes for a final prayer. In all, he fired 77 shots. Each victim was hit at least five times.

Let’s get Illinois back on track The members of the 100th Legislature who were sworn in Wednesday in Springfield are the lawmakers who will be in office when Illinois marks it bicentennial in December 2018.

Illinois has survived some tough times in its 200 years, and it will survive this period of budget crisis. However, the state needs to start down the path to recovery now, and the members of this Legislature – and this governor – are responsible for making it happen.

It has been 18 months since Illinois had a bona fide budget in place, and during that time, the state’s backlog of unpaid bills has grown to $11 billion. Its credit rating, which determines how much interest the state must pay to borrow, has slipped to the lowest of any state in the union. Unfunded pension liabilities have continued to grow and are threatening to swamp not only state government but local ones as well.

Meanwhile, people are fleeing our state in droves.

The players involved will not change in this Legislature. Chicago political boss Michael Madigan was elected speaker of the House by the majority Democrats on Wednesday, his 17th turn in the leadership position from which he rules the House and much of what goes on in this state. Chicago Democrat John Cullerton was re-elected Senate president.

Republican Bruce Rauner remains our governor.

If the players will not change, then attitudes must, for the sake of the future of our state and its citizens. There must be compromise.

There are signs that attitudes are changing.

In the Senate, Cullerton and Republican leader Sen. Christine Radogno have presented a negotiated plan that they say could break the budget stalemate. The good parts include local government consolidation, term limits for lawmakers, a two-year property tax freeze and streamlining purchasing agreements; the bad parts include increasing the personal income tax rate to 4.95 percent from the current 3.75 percent and increasing the corporate rate from 5.25 to 7 percent.

We have said repeatedly that Illinois taxpayers already pay too much, and increasing the tax rate is no solution to our problem.

The last increase, passed under Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, simply enabled more cronyism, waste and unrealistic employee retirement benefits.

We want a government we can afford with the tax bills we’re already paying.

If a tax increase is necessary to force compromise, it should again be temporary, and only if it enables real reforms that will improve the business climate in Illinois and stop the outmigration of people and jobs to neighboring states.

A future General Assembly should be forced to vote on whether to extend any increase – and explain to voters during the next campaign what it will do.

However, the presenting of a plan – any kind of plan – is more than we have seen from Springfield in months. It is cause for optimism that maybe the frustration and anger that Illinois citizens have been feeling is finally starting to have an effect on our representatives.

Our state has many problems it must confront in the coming years to get back on stable financial footing. Let this Legislature be the one that finally finds the courage to take the first steps.

Cuomo’s free-tuition plan isn’t exactly progressive Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced last week a plan to provide free in-state tuition to many New Yorkers. In the process, he got his picture taken with Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and burnished his image with progressives, whose support would help him in a presidential run in 2020.

Just one problem: His plan is not particularly progressive. In fact, as Urban Institute education expert Matthew Chingos explained on The Post’s higher-education blog, its benefits would largely flow to middle- and upper-middle-class families, not to the neediest.

Cuomo proposed spending $163 million to eliminate tuition payments for students who are enrolled full time in public undergraduate degree programs and whose families make $125,000 or less.

The aid would come in the form of new Excelsior Scholarships, which would pay the difference between the grant aid that students currently get and the cost of tuition at state colleges, which runs about $6,000 to $7,000 a year.

Students from low-income families already get aid packages from the federal and state governments that cover tuition costs, so the benefit would not go to them – even though they still need help.

In fact, very needy New York families require more help financing non-tuition costs such as room, board and books than middle-class families need with New York’s modest tuition charges.

But Cuomo’s plan would pump more aid to families that make more money. The

more tuition students are currently expected to contribute – that is, the higher their families’ incomes – the larger the benefit they would receive under Cuomo’s scheme.

It is true that college costs can be daunting for middle-class families. But in-state tuition rates already offer a huge subsidy not based on income. An authentically progressive program would prioritize the neediest.

A report by the Council of Economic Advisers finds that students from low-income backgrounds tend to have more trouble than others paying off their loans.

Tuition, meanwhile, represents only about a third of the educational costs New York’s undergraduates face. The first priority must be enabling poor families to send their children to college so that talented students are not trapped in a cycle of poverty.

Cuomo’s plan has a few good ideas.

Students benefiting from free tuition would be required to enroll full time, which should push up graduation rates and push down student loan defaults. Cuomo also could have done much worse, by, for example, proposing a general reduction in tuition, or even waiving it entirely, for everyone in the state.

That approach would have been even less targeted at the neediest end of the income scale.

But it would have been more progressive if the governor had proposed covering low-income people’s tuition in a way that enabled them to use more of the money they get from other grants.

Also, today’s high school dropouts are a more distinctive segment of the population now than they were then. (According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 32 percent of people older than 25 lacked a diploma in 1979. Only 12 percent lack one today.)

His basic point, however, is that low-skilled immigration puts downward pressure on wages at the bottom of the labor market and that reducing it would relieve that pressure. On that point, Cotton is probably right.

One might well ask why a conservative Republican wants to interfere with market forces to help low-wage workers. Cotton could respond that he is not dogmatic about markets:

All such policies involve tradeoffs. Raising the minimum wage risks depressing job growth. Reducing low-skilled immigration would harm the life prospects of many foreigners who won’t get to come here, and very modestly reduce our living standards on average.

But it would probably also help low-wage workers and promote assimilation and social cohesion.

I think that’s a trade worth making, and I’m glad at least one senator agrees.

Better protections needed for disabled, elderly victims To the Editor: Recently the news reported the

abduction and torturing of a disabled 18-year-old male in one of the neighboring communities by young thugs who used an acquaintance to lure him into their vehicle.

This is just one example of what happens to some of our most vulnerable community members – the disabled and the elderly – who are an integral part of families but are discounted outside of the family unit.

Because they often lack discriminating skills to discern well-meaning actions from genuine concern, people with disabilities and the elderly often become victims of various deceits played upon them.

It is time to provide protection such as that being allowed for nursing homes in the form of video monitoring.

The perpetrators used videos to capture their horrendous crimes and published it on Facebook (which showed they took pride in their cowardly deed); if the disabled teen had been wearing hidden body cam technology, the police may have been alerted sooner.

There also is a good chance that

these harms never would have occurred if the criminals knew beforehand they were being watched, since being observed causes behavior changes for the better, according to most studies.

That these thugs who were barely voting age hurled racial slurs and political insults to justify their cruelty to a disabled acquaintance who took his safety for granted because he knew them, makes me wonder at the possibility of retaliatory actions upon innocents by factions so inclined.

The acts are reminiscent of the 2013 teen killings of two black men.

That case is similar because it involved four white teens (one a police officer’s son) who lured two black men into their Joliet home, killed them, then partied afterward by fornicating on top of their dead bodies.

There is no doubt in my mind if the disabled teen had not escaped, he would have suffered the same fate as well.

Defensive-minded Mathey is key Spartan

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – For Taryn Mathey, it’s about getting the belt.

This season, the Sycamore girls basketball team has a pro wrestling-style championship traveling belt it awards to the player who had the biggest impact on the defensive side of the ball during a game. While the senior guard is far from the team’s leading scorer on offense, she takes pride in being the one controlling the belt.

“I always like to challenge my teammates, like, who’s going to take the belt from me today? I dare you all,” Mathey joked. “I like to challenge my teammates that each one of you should be aiming to get the belt because if we are all getting those deflections and getting those steals, offense is always made by your defense.”

While she encourages her teammates to go for the belt, she said it still bothers her when they take it away from her.

“Yes, very much,” she laughed. “I like having the belt.”

The belt, which assistant coach Andrew Stacy brought to the girls team after being the head coach for the boys team, is decided by a number of defensive-minded statistics – steals, deflections, blocks, rebounds and charges.

Sycamore coach Adam Wickness said the belt is something tangible to highlight standout defense.

“A lot of those things don’t show up in articles ... you don’t say, ‘Hey, Taryn had eight deflections!’ But that can change the game,” Wickness said. “That can alter the course of the game.”

Mathey has won the belt seven times this season, tied for most on the team with freshman Kylie Feuerbach.

Wickness called Mathey a “glue player” this season for the Spartans, who are 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 heading into their important game against Yorkville on Friday.

For Mathey, the ability to play solid defense simply comes down to desire.

“One thing I was always taught is that defense doesn’t require any skill.

It’s just effort,” said Mathey, who also was a defender for the Sycamore girls soccer team, which took third in the state last season. “I could have the least amount of skill on the team, but I know that I could give it all I have every time I’m on the court. Once I get beat once, I get on myself – ‘There’s no way I’m letting this girl beat me again.’ That’s my mindset for the rest of the game.

Whether I’m tired or not, I’ll do everything I can to not let that girl score. To me, there’s nothing worse than letting your girl score on you.”

Mathey’s statistical numbers are far from eye-popping – she averages 3.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals a game. However, Wickness said that he frequently puts Mathey on the other team’s best player, and he had high praise for the aggressive, tough-minded senior guard.

“She’s like the definition of selfless,” Wickness said. “She’s willing to do every little thing you need her to do and put all personal glory aside. She’s a total team-first kid.”

Mathey said that usually during pregame warmups, her mind is on the player she’ll be guarding . “I don’t want my player to be the reason why we lose. That’s what gets me the most,” she said. And she understands that the burden of offense is not on her shoul-

ders. While Feuerbach and junior guard Kate Majerus make up the lion’s share of the points for the Spartans, the impact Mathey has on the outcome of the game is not lost on the team’s two stars.

“Taryn is honestly our entire team – she brings so much energy and so much commitment to the team,” Majerus said. “She’s definitely our best defensive player. ... We always stick her to the other team’s best player.”

Are Chargers on move to LA? THE WAY WE HEAR IT

The Jan. 15 deadline for the San Diego Chargers to tell the NFL whether they will be joining the Rams in Los Angeles is this Sunday.

While there is still the possibility the Chargers will ask for an extension of the deadline, our sources are telling us Chargers owner Dean Spanos is leaning toward a decision sooner rather than later, perhaps you’ve even heard it by the time you read this and we’re told it may not be what most are expecting.

A decision by Spanos to make the move to Los Angeles would be personally painful for him and his family, but certainly not difficult.

Financially, the opportunity in Los Angeles is a can’t-miss, expensive in the short-term but practically guaranteed to be extremely lucrative in the long run.

But unlike Rams owner Stan Kroenke, who couldn’t wait to leave St. Louis Rams fans whistling in the wind, Spanos doesn’t want to be the guy who deserted his home, neighbors and friends to chase the NFL’s strange vision and certain riches.

NFL fans refused to support the Rams the first time around and let the Raiders come and go as well. Clearly there were stadium issues, and nothing in L.A. vaguely resembling the football and entertainment palace Kroenke is building and being forced to offer tenancy in to either the Chargers or Raiders.

But the fact that TV ratings actually improved markedly in L.A. after the Raiders and Rams were gone has to give one pause to wonder why Los Angeles residents will support these two clubs, particularly if they both continue to be among the worst in the league as they are now.

Roger Goodell’s fixation on putting a team back in L.A. has been a mystery to many insiders and experts we talked to from the

jump. While that is and should be a concern to Spanos, we hear the bigger issue is financial and exactly what Spanos is going to get for his trouble and his bucks.

The NFL has agreed to finance the Chargers relocation fee and stretch the payments out over 30 years, but it will still cost Spanos $650 million to move to Los Angeles and become Kroenke’s tenant. Spanos will also have to build new offices and practice facilities for the team in the area.

It’s safe to say Spanos will spend at least $700 million to move to L.A. and rent space in Kroenke’s building.

It is believed Spanos would share in all his parking and concession dollars and that he can sell PSLs to season-ticket holders, but it’s unclear what piece, if any, Spanos would get of other events held at the complex beyond NFL games.

The Way We Hear It, Spanos was working up to the 11th hour to determine exactly how much money he could get from the city of San Diego and the NFL to build his own complex and stay put with the thinking being why spend $700 million for the right to rent if I can spend that or a bit more to own.

Our sources are telling us Spanos is also concerned that contrary to popular opinion, a significant number of loyal Charger fans will not be willing to shell out big bucks for PSLs and/or season tickets to make the roughly two hours each way drive to L.A. 8-10 times a year.

A lifetime competition with the Rams for the hearts of notoriously fickle L.A. NFL fans may not be the best way to spend $700 million.

According to our sources, Spanos was at least 60-40 or stronger on finding a way to stay in San Diego right up to his drop-dead date to make the call.

Coughlin a strange call In Jacksonville

Folks we’re talking to around the league are scratching their heads a bit over the decision

by Jaguars owner Shad Khan to remove the

interim tag from head coach Doug Marrone and retain general manager David Caldwell but then cut off his claws by bringing in Tom Coughlin to be Caldwell’s and Marrone’s boss.

Marrone is an experienced offensive mind who didn’t exactly fail in his first head coaching stint, going 15-17 in two years in Buffalo, 9-7 in his second season before resigning when the club was sold to the Pegulas.

And it is fairly common in the NFL when a team fails with a head coach from one side of the ball – Gus Bradley was a highly respected defensive coordinator in Seattle before taking the Jacksonville job – to make its next hire from the other side of the line of scrimmage.

Where it gets puzzling is why bring in Coughlin if you’re going to keep Caldwell?

One top NFL exec said, “Giving the job to Marrone seems to clearly be a double down on Blake Bortles.

Caldwell’s the guy who picked him and there is a lot more young talent on that roster, so where does Coughlin fit?”

It’s a really good question. While Coughlin is a highly accomplished and respected head coach, he comes from the offensive side of the

ball like Marrone, succeeded with the help of excellent defensive coordinators and worked under strong executives in Ernie Accorsi and Jerry Reese.

Coughlin has minimal if any front-office experience, is not known as a talent evaluator and it is hard to see how he fits as part of the Jaguars’ three-headed management team.

There is also the issue of Coughlin making it as clear as possible to anyone who’d listen from the moment he “resigned” in New York that he wanted to coach again.

Should the Jaguars start slow under Marrone, Coughlin will clearly be looming.

We’re not sure what Khan was thinking in putting these three together, but more than a few insiders tell us they believe he has put both his coach and GM more in positions to fail than he has to help them succeed.

Back-toback turnovers by the Chiefs, leading to back-to-back Steelers touchdowns, opened Le’Veon the rout. Three Bell months later, the Steelers head to K.C. coming off a convincing 30-12 win over the Dolphins, but the focus postgame turned to Ben Roethlisberger’s walking boot and assistant coach Joey Porter’s arrest. On the field, though, Pittsburgh’s offense rolled. The Chiefs went 10-2 after that loss to Pittsburgh, winning the AFC West and a bye. This

Le’Veon Bell ran through and around a Dolphins defense to the tune of 167 rushing yards in the wild-card round. The dual-threat back had 144 rushing yards against the Chiefs in Week 4, his first game back from a three-game suspension. He has averaged a staggering 143.1 rushing yards in his past seven games. Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott and the Cowboys steamrolled the Packers, 30-16, at Lambeau Field in Week 6 behind 191 rushing yards – Green Bay permitted 171 in its first four games combined – and four takeaways, or three more than Green Bay’s past seven opponents totaled. Dallas continued overwhelming Aaron foes en route to the NFC’s Rodgers top seed, whereas the Packers lost four of their next five but haven’t stumbled since. Divine intervention helped Aaron Rodgers overcome a sluggish start in the wild-card round for a fabulous flourish and 38-13 conquest of Big Blue and the NFL’s hottest defense. Green Bay’s advancing came at a significant cost, however: Jordy Nelson (NFL-leading 14 receiving TDs) suffered a rib injury that’ll likely keep him out.

It’s one thing to stop Paul Perkins and Rashad Jennings with six defenders; Dom Capers knows he’ll need box reinforcements to contain Elliott, Dallas’ do-it-all dynamo and the NFL’s rushing leader, who logged 30 touches and 174 scrimmage yards at Lambeau.

Mike Daniels will tussle with a pair of All-Pros in C Travis Frederick and RG Zack Martin, attempting to keep ILBs Jake Ryan, coming off perhaps his best game as a pro, and Blake Martinez free. Julius Peppers, who turns 37 Wednesday, was exceptional vs. the Giants while playing a season-high 74 percent of the snaps (compared to just 48 in Week 6), but it’ll be top run defenders Clay Matthews and Nick Perry most responsible for setting the edges against Elliott and Prescott, another dangerous perimeter threat.

Remember, Dallas’ best defense against the planet’s hottest passer is Elliott and the NFL’s leading ball control attack.

SEAHAWKS VS. FALCONS

Coming off a Week 5 road upset in Denver – their fourth consecutive win – the Falcons flew high into Seattle, where a 26-24 defeat ended in controversy with Richard Sherman avoiding a pass interference penalty despite egregiously holding Julio Jones’ right arm on Atlanta’s final offensive play. Fast-forward three months: Seattle, after running roughshod over the Lions, travels cross-country to face a rested Falcons squad in the rematch from earlier this season and the 2012 divisional round, when Matt Ryan and Co. squandered a 20-point fourth-quarter lead but positioned Matt Bryant in the final minute for a 49-yard field goal as time expired for a 30-28 triumph. Perhaps the weekend’s best matchup, Sherman vs. Jones, takes on a different feel than the first meeting, when Jones had a game-high seven catches, 139 yards and a touchdown, and that was with Earl Thomas patrolling the deep middle.

Unlike the Lions, who failed to expose Thomas’ replacement Steven Terrell, Ryan (NFL-high 9.3 yards per attempt) and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan’s bread and butter is attacking vertically.

Dunn enters sixth hall of fame (finally) Before we completely file away 2016:

The truth, justice and NIU way news:

It’s now six halls of fame for Hubie Dunn. The former Northern Illinois University men’s gymnastics coach will be inducted posthumously into the Southern Illinois University Athletics Hall of Fame on Jan. 27 in Carbondale.

Kudos to Saluki athletics director and ex-NIU development officer Tommy Bell for correcting this longtime oversight.

If you recall, upon Dunn’s passing in February at age 94, my tribute column asked in good conscience, “Why isn’t (Hubie) in the SIU Athletics Hall of Fame?” As a nuisance with an elephant’s never-forget memory, I forwarded that story to Bell as a reminder of Dunn’s considerable national effect on his sport and success in the early days as an SIU gymnast.

Yes, I had formally nominated Hubie a decade or so ago when I was still working, figuring a member of the Citizens Savings Helms Foundation Gymnastics (inducted in 1973), the U.S.A. Gymnastics (1996), the NIU (1997), the state of Washington Gymnastics (2004), and the Washington State University (2006) halls of fame was a cinch. Wrong, Mike. Being involved with NIU’s HOF since the mid-1980s, I should’ve known better.

Politics, politics.

Of considerable, and I do mean considerable, influence in this instance was the ex-SIU chancellor. You may have heard of him, Hubie’s nephew, John Dunn, now president at Cotton

Another Hubie story: As an SIU student-athlete circa 1939-43, Dunn was a daredevil as one of the nation’s top collegiate gymnasts, fearlessly executing swings and difficult dismounts on the flying rings, an event so dangerous that it later was banned by the sport’s governing body. For Dunn, a D-Day veteran, the daring did not stop in the Navy.

Imagine the smile of admiration on the face of Bill Spaletto, one of Hubie’s former NIU gymnastics proteges and successor as head coach, relating this World War II story.

“This is so Hubie,” Spaletto told me at Dunn’s wake. “He would climb on top of the gun turrets of his destroyer and do handstands while the ship was moving through the sea.”

All 9.5 handstands, right Hubie?

An NIU sports publicity brother: Elwood “Woody” Hasemann. I recognized the name right away on the obituary page last month. Hasemann, 86, who served as NIU’s sports information director in the early 1950s and edited the student newspaper, died last fall.

Hasemann earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from NIU

and would become a “trailblazer” and “legend” in the trade show industry. According to his obit, when Hasemann headed his first International Manufacturing Technology Show in 1982 at Chicago’s McCormick Place, the event attracted “... 97,000 individuals with 1,000 exhibitors filling 900,000 square feet ...” A dozen shows later, the trade show numbers increased to “... 1,400 exhibitors from 30 nations ...” in 1.4 million square feet of exhibition space.

In 1989, Hasemann also pioneered trade shows in China. The Barrington native was inducted into the Exhibit and Event Marketing Association Hall of Fame in 2005. Remarkable career.

R.I.P., Woody.

On the Brink: Not to incur Sean Frazier’s ire or anyone else’s at NIU, but I cannot understand how intercollegiate athletics has not acknowledged the passing of all-time Huskies gridiron great Larry Brink on Aug. 7, I repeat August, at the age of 92 in Redding, California.

No obit on the website, no moment of silence, no scoreboard video tribute – why?

By any standard, Brink was a legacy student-athlete here.

The resume: U.S. Army Air Forces World War II vet, lettered in football (1945-47), team captain as a senior (1947), three-peat first-team all-conference (1945-47), league champion (1946), bowl game participant (1946, 1947), first NIU NFL draft choice (1948, 17th round by Los Angeles Rams), first NIU

All-Pro (1950-52), first NIU Pro Bowler (1950, 1951), first NIU NFL titlist (1951), seven-year NFL career with the Rams (1948-53) and Bears (1954), charter inductee of NIU Athletics Hall of Fame (1978) and First-Team All-Century Team in NIU Centennial celebration (1999).

That good enough? I’m also told NIU athletics was advised about Brink’s death.

Sorry, I don’t get it. In addition, Brink was one of the oldest living NFL veterans, which says a lot about what the Rams and Bears think of their alumni, too. Then again, 15 or so years ago, I did lose track of Brink.

What’s the logical act? Call the Rams and check. It was the offseason. The St. Louis PR guy – who shall remain nameless – told me Brink was deceased. “Are you sure? This is a Rams’ All-Pro player from the 1950s,” I replied. “He’s dead,” the voice on the other end of the phone said.

To me, the solution might be to create a permanent Brink display or wall plaque listing his athletics achievements in the NIU Hall of Champions between the Yordon and Chessick centers. For Brink, there’s no more appropriate place on campus.

Howard selected to take injured Johnson’s place in Pro Bowl

pfinley@suntimes.com In a sense, Jordan Howard wasn’t surprised he was named to the Pro Bowl on Wednesday. The Bears’ star rookie running back figured the Cardinals’ David Johnson wouldn’t want to test the knee injury he suffered in Week 17, or that the Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott or the Falcons’ Devonta Freeman would be rendered ineligible if their team reached the Super Bowl.

“I felt I was going to get in eventually and in some way,” he said after replacing Johnson on the roster.

On another level, however, he has to feel stunned. Howard said that he’s never played in an all-star game be-

fore – and wasn’t even selected to the Alabama showcase as a high schooler.

“After everything I’ve been through, not getting selected for the all-star game in high school, I just bursted off and just put my head down and kept working,” he said. “I guess my hard work is paying off now, so I’m just very grateful for that.”

His rise was unlikely. In college, Howard was forced to leave UAB for Indiana when the Blazers suspended their football program. He then decided to eschew common wisdom and turned pro after his junior year.

After the Bears drafted him in the fifth round, Howard didn’t play a single snap in Week 1. It was the first time since his freshman year in col-

lege he’d been a healthy scratch.

“It definitely motivated me to work hard so I would be able to get on the field,” he said.

When he did, he was the most sparkling – if not only – bright spot of a dark 3-13 season. In 15 games, Howard ran 252 times for a franchise rookie record 1,313 yards. He joins Gale Sayers as the only Bears rookie running back selected to the all-star game, which kicks off Jan. 29 in Orlando, Fla. The Bears’ only representative hasn’t thought about which player’s brain he’ll pick there, but he knows the topic: “How they take care of their body and things like that, how they diet.” Howard, who received four or

five massages per week, credits his physical upkeep as a reason for his success.

He’ll have a new boss when he tries to repeat it next year. The Bears are looking for a running backs coach after Stan Drayton left to become the associate head coach and run game coordinator at the University of Texas.

Howard wants someone like Drayton to take his place – “An upbeat guy who doesn’t let the moment get them rattled,” he said – after the position coach gave him some parting advice.

And a prediction.

“He was just telling me he thinks I have a chance to be one of the best backs in this league for a long time,” Howard said.

to the front office that if his current situation doesn’t change he wants to be elsewhere.

“Of course that’s going to happen,” Gibson said. “When you have an AllStar guard that feels like he still has the potential to help a team win. He came here to play games and help this team make the playoffs, so we understand that frustration when the team is not doing what it’s supposed to be doing and he’s on the bench.”

Kero, snubbed of NHL chance in 2015-16, making most of opportunity

mlazerus@suntimes.com In the first three months of the 201516 season, the Blackhawks recalled a player from the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs 11 times, giving nearly every prominent prospect they had a chance to play at the NHL level. Leashes were short, but opportunities were plentiful.

This season, the Rockford shuttle never got out of the garage. That was great for the six rookies who started the season with the Blackhawks, all of whom got time and trust to figure things out and entrench themselves in the NHL. But it was utterly demoralizing for the next tier of Hawks prospects, who seemed all but forgotten some 90 miles down I-90.

“It was a little different,” said Tanner Kero, one of those forgotten future Hawks. “Especially after last year, when there were guys coming up and

down a lot early on. You just try not to read too much into it, and just work on what they told you after training camp to work on. All you can do is try to get better every day, and hope that you get the chance.”

Kero finally got his chance – the first chance for any Rockford forward or defenseman – on Dec. 22, when Artem Anisimov and Marian Hossa were both injured. Even Kero figured it could be a short stay, a stopgap center until Anisimov returned a game later. But as Joel Quenneville is fond of saying, things change quickly in this business.

And it looks like Kero is starting to make a name for himself with the Hawks.

Well, sort of.

“Is it Care-oh or Kee-ro?” Brian Campbell said Tuesday night, stopping mid-praise to make sure he had his new teammate’s name correctly (it’s Care-oh). “I feel like he’s really stepped

in and played well for us. He’s good on draws. He’s reliable. He kind of makes that line go.”

That line is the Hawks’ third line.

With Marcus Kruger out with a hand injury, Kero has slid into the third-line center spot between Ryan Hartman and Richard Panik. And the results have been impressive. They were together throughout the Hawks’ 4-0 homestand, and were arguably the most consistent line on the team. Hartman had four goals and two assists. Panik had a goal and two assists. And Kero had an assist Sunday and his first goal of the season Tuesday against Detroit.

Kero is the rare young player whose strengths are defense and penalty-killing. But the 24-year-old Michigan Tech grad can score, too. He had five goals in six games with the IceHogs – playing on a line with Hartman – after turning pro following his senior season. He had 20 goals in 60 games last season with Rockford. And he had seven goals

in 28 games before getting the call last month.

“Defense is his game, right?” Hartman said. “That’s the role he played even in Rockford. He’s that defensive center who can win draws. But he’s got an offensive side, too. He knows how to score and has a sneaky good shot. If you’re good in your own end, it’s going to translate into offensive-zone time.

He’s fun to play with.”

And even with Kruger only a week or two away from returning, and with Motte (three goals in four games) and Schmaltz (six goals in 11 games) both tearing it up in Rockford, Kero is looking less like an injury stopgap, and more like a much-needed piece to the bottom-six puzzle.

“We’re always open-minded,” Quenneville said. “We give them the opportunity to play, and they usually make the decisions for us based on performance. … We’ll see how it all sorts out, but he’s certainly helping himself.”

NEW YORK – By all accounts, season two of the Fred Hoiberg experience has seen improvements.

Bulls VP of basketball operations John Paxson said last summer that he wanted to see the former Iowa State coach continue to grow into his NBA britches, and he seems to have taken those strides.

Almost.

The communication department with players? Well, there still seems to be an issue there.

Last season, it was Joakim Noah and a he-said, he-said between the veteran big man and Hoiberg.

It was late in the 2015-16 preseason when Hoiberg announced that Noah would come off the bench rather than be a starter.

He passed it off as, “Jo actually came to me and talked to me about that,” when discussing how that decision went down.

Noah flatly denied that he volunteered his services as a bench player, and then it got interesting. Finally, Hoiberg backtracked, passing it off as miscommunication.

“Did [Noah] specifically say, ‘I want to come off the bench?’ No, nobody wants to come off the bench, but you know it’s a decision that we came up with,” Hoiberg eventually explained.

“He’s been great. He’s been as enthusiastic as anybody over there when he’s not in the game. He’s always going to bring it when he’s on the floor, so no, things are fine.”

Now enter Rajon Rondo.

First, Rondo was told by his coach that he looked slow last week. Then he was benched for five-plus games until coming off the bench in the Tuesday loss against Washington, but insisted that Hoiberg never really gave him a detailed explanation.

“Um. How can I say this? No,” Rondo said, when asked if Hoiberg detailed the circumstances of the benching.

“I got a slight explanation from another guy on the staff. A guy told me that he was saving me from myself.”

Hoiberg was asked several times if he has given Rondo that detailed explanation, and was very vague in his response.

“I’ve talked to him about it,” Hoiberg said. “The biggest thing we talked about is how he’s handled it.

He’s handled it great.”

Not exactly the type of explanation that clears up things, and maybe that’s something that Hoiberg has to really work on.

“Hmmm,” Taj Gibson said, when asked if communication between coach and players needed to improve in the Bulls locker room. “In any work place you want to communicate with your bosses, you want to be able to

Broncos hire Joseph as head coach

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – A runner-up two years ago, Vance Joseph is John Elway’s pick this time around.

“It’s official. Excited to announce Vance Joseph as head coach of the Denver Broncos!” Elway tweeted Wednesday afternoon.

The 44-year-old ex-Colorado quarterback built a reputation as one of the league’s best secondary coaches as he worked his way through the ranks in San Francisco, Houston and Cincinnati before serving as Dolphins defensive coordinator last season and helping Miami end an eight-year playoff drought.

Joseph, who will be formally introduced as the team’s 16th head coach on Thursday, impressed Elway in 2015 when Gary Kubiak got the job and the Broncos even tried to hire him as their defensive coordinator, a move the Bengals blocked.

So, he stayed in Cincinnati for another year as secondary coach before joining Adam Gase’s staff in Miami.

Bills agree to hire McDermott as coach

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – The Buffalo Bills are putting their faith in Sean McDermott to fix their under-performing defense and restore relevance to a franchise that hasn’t reached the playoffs since the Music City Miracle loss in January 2000.

head coach. The deal was reached shortly after McDermott conducted his second interview with the team in eight days. The 42-year-old has no previous head-coaching experience and spent the past six seasons overseeing the Panthers defense.

Texas warned of backlash over transgender bathroom bill

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas is flirting with losing major sporting events like North Carolina did, Dallas civic leaders warned Wednesday as they urged Republican lawmakers to stand down on a proposal that would require transgender people to use bathrooms corresponding to their sex at birth.

The bill is akin to one passed last year

by North Carolina that led to significant fallout, including companies canceling expansion plans in the state, the NCAA moving championship games elsewhere and the NBA moving next month’s All-Star Game out of Charlotte.

Texas is often picked to host major sporting events, including the Super Bowl in Houston next month, the NCAA women’s Final Four in Dallas in March and the NCAA men’s Final Four in San Antonio in 2018.

The NCAA didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday about the bill.

sports@daily-chronicle.com When the Northern Illinois women’s basketball team trailed late on the road, a freshman stepped up.

Freshman guard Janae Poisson had a career night, and the Huskies erased a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter in a dramatic 98-97 victory at Kent State on Wednesday night.

Poisson scored a career-high 27 points and connected on four 3-pointers for the night. She had a game-tying jumper midway through the fourth quarter and added a pair of free throws

that cushioned the lead for the Huskies in the final minute.

“She plays with so much confidence as a freshman,” Northern Illinois coach Lisa Carlsen said. “That’s something she came (to NIU) with.”

The Huskies (11-4 overall, 4-0 in Mid-American Conference West) stayed perfect in conference play and had five players in double figures.

Ending on a high note For artists of color, President Obama leaves a musical legacy, too

Preceding President Barack Obama’s farewell speech Tuesday night, R&B artist BJ the Chicago Kid sang the national anthem.

With only two records and one chart appearance under his belt, the singer may be a far cry from Beyoncé singing at Obama’s second inauguration, but it’s a fitting cap on a presidency that, from a pop culture standpoint, was intimately intertwined with musicians of color.

In the coming weeks, much will be written about his love of music, from the Spotify playlists he often created (prompting the company to post a job opening, just for him) to singing with Willie Nelson and covering Al Green songs.

But what can be lost in these “listicles” is the unprecedented impact Obama had on artists of color, from giving relatively unknown performers like BJ the Chicago Kid an enormous platform to inviting rappers into conversations about criminal justice reform.

During Ronald Reagan’s administration, a few famous artists of color, such as Ella Fitzgerald and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, performed at the White House. But, according to a list released by the Reagan Library, such visits were few and far between compared to those of white artists such as Frank Sinatra, Pete Fountain and The Beach Boys.

More artists of color performed during President George W. Bush’s administration, due in no small part to him declaring June 2001 “Black Music Month” and hosting Lionel Hampton, Shirley Caesar, Bobby Jones, James Brown, the Blind Boys of Alabama and the Harlem Jazz Museum Artists at a celebratory ceremony.

But artists of color visited the White House as a matter of routine during Obama’s administration, many, such as rappers Common, Jay Z and Usher, visiting multiple times.

This disparity can, of course, be explained partially by taste. Having one’s favorite artists perform intimate concerts at his home is a dream perk of the presidency, and Obama has long been a fan of hip-hop, a predominately black genre.

And, of course, people of color are

Events commemorate legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. DAILY CHRONICLE Northern Illinois University will host a series of events in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Week, Jan. 16 through 20. This year’s theme is “The Simple Art of Living Together,” inspired by the speech Martin Luther King Jr. gave when he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

“Dr. King made a point to address issues that were affecting not one singular population, but society as a whole,” Gena Flynn, director of NIU’s Center for Black Studies, said in a news release. “One of the things we are going to try to tackle during the week as a community – NIU and DeKalb – is thinking through how we live together.”

Flynn said the weeklong celebration provides an opportunity for individuals to reflect on their own opinions and predispositions and then take the next step of heeding King’s message regarding peace and justice.

“Through the events we have planned, people will have time for reflection, but they will also be challenged to think critically,” Flynn said in the release. “We need to then take the next step and think about how we can better relationships within the community.”

news@kendallcountynow.com SANDWICH – Angie Davis’ Sugar Buzz Bakery will be featured on the “Chicago’s Best” television program at 10 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, on WGNTV. Davis’ bakery, at 1004 E. Church St. (Route 34), has featured all types of sweets served with a smile for three years.

“Chicago’s Best” is co-hosted by Brittney Payton and Elliott Bambrough and highlights unique and popular places to eat throughout the Chicago area.

Davis said Brittney and her mother, Connie, (Walter Payton’s widow) have often stopped in at Angie’s Sugar Buzz when they’re in the area.

When asked if she’d like her bakery

to be featured on television, Davis got busy redecorating the store.

Her family, friends, neighbors and contractor worked together to get most of it done. Now there’s a few easy chairs and a sofa around a coffee table and other small gathering areas for customers to sit while enjoying donuts and coffee with friends. There are even old oak pews from a church along the west wall under a mural that was sent from Switzerland, arriving in just seven days.

An ornamental tin ceiling, hanging lights and pot lights are yet to be installed, Davis said.

Angie’s Sugar Buzz Bakery is the third Sandwich location to be featured on “Chicago’s Best.” The others are South Moon BBQ at Wells and East Railroad streets, and Sweet Magnolia’s, which is no longer open.

Winter craft beer festival coming to convocation center DAILY CHRONICLE More than 40 craft breweries will be represented at the inaugural Barb City Brewfest on March 25 in DeKalb.

The event will be from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center, 1525 W. Lincoln Highway.

Visitors can enjoy more than 80 craft beers and hard ciders from the region and around the country. In ad-

dition to the sampling, attendees can purchase food and enjoy beer culture with activities and music.

There are three ways to enjoy the fest: Early entry with special perks, general admission for the standard brew fest experience, and the important designated driver.

Early-entry tickets cost $52 and include one-hour early admission at noon, 20 drink tickets, access to specialty beer offerings (before everyone

BOSTON – For Jessica Kensky, seeing the new Mark Wahlberg movie about the Boston Marathon bombing was deeply personal.

She and her husband, Patrick Downes, both lost their left legs below the knee in the 2013 bombing. Almost two years later, Kensky chose to have her right leg amputated because of excruciating pain caused by severe injuries she suffered in the bombing.

So when it came time to publicly express her feelings about the movie “Patriots Day,” Kensky chose her words carefully.

She said she and her husband were initially reluctant to be involved in the film, but after seeing the movie during a special screening in Boston last month, she believes Wahlberg and director Peter Berg treated the victims and their stories with respect. But she said the question of whether the filmmakers “got it right” was one that’s impossible for her and other survivors to answer.

“It can feel OK, they can feel respected, they can feel proud and happy it was done, but ‘right’ is so hard because what happened to us was just anything but right,” she said.

“Patriots Day” opens Friday. The movie’s title refers to Patriots’ Day, the day the Boston Marathon is run, a state holiday commemorating the battles of Lexington and Concord in the Revolutionary War. Some of the key characters in the movie who saw the film last month said they were anxious about it accurately capturing the devastation of the twin bombings near the finish line of the marathon. The

former Police Commissioner Ed Davis, who helped lead the investigation.

“Watching the movie, not only did they get it right ... but at the end of this, it was a cathartic experience for me,” Davis said.

Wahlberg, a Boston native, said he was initially hesitant to make the film but came to feel a personal responsibility to his hometown to tell the story and tell it right. In the film, Wahlberg plays Sgt. Tommy Saunders, an amalgam of Boston police officers who were at the finish line when the bombs exploded and later helped find the bombers, brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

The movie depicts the carnage caused by the bombing: the bloodied victims, the severed limbs, the anguished screams, a police officer standing guard over the covered body of 8-year-old Martin Richard, the youngest casualty.

It also shows the city’s response: strangers tying tourniquets around the injured, doctors and nurses racing around emergency rooms to save severely injured people, people lining the streets and applauding police after the capture of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

The film focuses heavily on the intense manhunt for the Tsarnaevs and the resilience that came to be known as “Boston Strong.”

“I’m so proud of my community as a whole and the way they responded,” Wahlberg said at a news conference Dec. 15 in Boston.

Kensky said one of the most difficult things for her and some other survivors was seeing the Tsarnaev brothers portrayed in the movie. Tamerlan was killed during the shootout with police; Dzhokhar was sentenced to death and is appealing.

Running can be good for your knees Dear Doctors: I recently added running to my weight-loss program. Not only do I feel better, but the pounds are coming off faster.

However, I keep reading running is bad for my knees – am I making a mistake?

Dear Reader: We’re happy to reassure you running, when done properly, is not bad for your knees. In fact, a number of recent studies suggest the opposite is true.

In addition to a lowered risk of stroke and heart attack, runners in the studies had lower rates of osteoarthritis than the non-runners did. And thanks to the runners’ general level of fitness, their chosen form of exercise was seen as beneficial to maintain joint health.

The idea that running is bad for your knees is one of those myths that just won’t go away. It sounds like common sense – you hit the ground with a certain amount of force as you run, so over the course of a few miles (or quite a few, if you’re a distance runner) your knees must take a beating. But numerous studies conducted over the past decade repeatedly have shown that’s not so.

Researchers found no correlation between running and osteoarthritis, also known as OA. Sure, a percentage of the participants in the long-term studies did develop OA. However, when scientists looked closely, it turned out running was not a risk factor. Instead, obesity, family history, advanced age and previous muscle or joint injury proved to be the real predictors of future osteoarthritis.

In fact, it turns out people who exercise – and this includes short- and long-distance runners – get extra protection against OA. As we mentioned earlier, runners’ muscles are more toned and therefore reduce the pressure the joints are asked to bear. Add in the fact runners tend to have a lower BMI – that’s body mass index, a measure of fitness calculated by height and weight – and

Before you race out the door, though, there are caveats. If you have injured yourself in the past, whether a muscle, cartilage or ligament, you indeed might be at risk of further damage. But if you’re a healthy individual without a history of injury, running is a good way to boost your weight loss – and, as you also noticed, your mood.

A few things to consider as you add regular running to your routine: • If you’re older than 40 or more than 20 pounds overweight, it’s probably wise to talk to your primary care physician about your plan to run regularly.

• Proper training takes time, probably longer than you imagine. Don’t think in terms of miles at the beginning. Instead, pick a time interval – 10 or 20 minutes to start – and mix running with walking as you ease into your new routine.

• Get good shoes and insoles. It makes all the difference to the alignment of your leg, which helps protect your knees. And be sure to replace your running shoes before they wear out.

• Never run when injured. Ever. Sharp pains, sudden pains or pains that are on one side of the body but not the other can be warning signals.

• Yes, you really do need that day (or two) of rest each week to stay injury-free.

My mom wants me to exercise more. Currently, I just walk a lot (in my house and around the block). I know exercise is a good idea, but I’m really self-conscious about it. I never feel like I’m doing it right (because I know you easily can pull a muscle), and I feel like everyone else in the gym is judging me.

Now that I’m 17, Mom expects me to be more mature about this. I don’t even feel comfortable swimming in public places anymore. I feel stressed about it, but Mom just thinks I’m being picky.

Being in a gym makes me feel unhappy and judged. I wish there was a better way to exercise, but I don’t know what. How can I get my mom to understand how hard this is for me?

– Wondering In Wichita Dear Wondering: Going to a gym can be fun if you do it with a buddy. Most of the people there are more concerned with what they are doing than what anyone else is. That said, going to the gym isn’t for everyone. There are many forms of exercise.

Tell your mother you would prefer to exercise on your own rather than go to a gym. Then put on your walking shoes, leave the house and walk for 20 to 30 minutes a day. It’s good for you.

Listen to music when you’re doing it and it will make the time go quickly. And on days when you don’t want to go outside, put on some music and dance. It’s good for the circulation, and it’s also good for the soul.

East’s opening bid made reaching three no-trump fairly difficult! But with that crazy a hand, he had good reason to think that three no-trump would not be his side’s last making contract.

South ruffed the second diamond with his heart 10, and West smoothly discarded a club.

Declarer was very suspicious. He led the heart seven from his hand and ran it when West played low.

After East pitched a diamond, South took his top clubs and ruffed his last club with the heart king. (West threw a spade.) Now declarer ruffed the diamond 10 with his heart eight.

West overruffed, but was endplayed.

When he tried the spade king, South won with his ace, cashed the spade queen and exited with the heart four.

West had to lead from his queenthree into declarer’s ace-nine.

That was brilliant play by the best young Italian player, 17-yearold Giovanni Donati. But even he could not have made his contract if West had overruffed at trick two and returned a club or low heart.
